Ascot Racecourse, founded in 1711, is the premier racing venue in the United Kingdom and home to Europe’s premier flat race meeting, Royal Ascot, the world’s most famous race meeting, with an annual attendance of 300,000 people. On each of the five race days, The Queen arrives by Royal Procession along the racecourse with her guests, in full view of up to 80,000 spectators. One of the most important dates in the British social and International rowing calendars, the Henley Regatta is the epitome of an English summer day and is steeped in history. The regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, except during the two World Wars. The first regatta took place on a single afternoon; however its popularity with the oarsmen extended the race to two days. For the fifth consecutive year, Hurlingham Park in Fulham will play host to one of the most hotly anticipated sporting and social events in London’s calendar; the hallowed turf will thunder with the hooves of world class polo ponies. Enjoy a day of entertainment at the spiritual home of polo, which is conveniently located in central London. On the field, teams from around the globe will compete to be crowned champions of MINT Polo in the Park 2013.

K
Number 10 Downing Street will be participating in Open Garden Squares Weekend, opening its garden on Saturday 8th June 2013.
een to open up Downing Street and show people what goes on behind the famous black front door, the Downing Street garden will join over 200 private, hidden and little known gardens opening to the public as part of Open Garden Squares Weekend. Organised by the London Parks & Gardens Trust, the Weekend (8th & 9th June) is presented in association with the National Trust which is helping to make the city’s hidden green spaces accessible to as many people as possible.
for activities in March 2012. Open Garden Squares Weekend takes place across 27 London boroughs. Co-ordinator, Robin Saklatvala, commented: “Open Garden Squares Weekend is all about offering people access to London’s secret gardens. We are thrilled to be able to work with Downing Street and the National Trust to offer our visitors a memorable and rare opportunity to see the Number 10 garden. The two tours will be a highlight of the 2013 Weekend.”
The garden at Number 10 Downing Street is shared by residents in Number 10 and Number 11, as well as guests from both buildings. Larry, the popular Downing Street cat and Freya the Chancellor’s family cat also make use of the outdoor space. The terrace and garden at Downing Street were constructed in 1736 shortly after Walpole moved into Number 10. The terrace extends across the back of the house. The garden is dominated by an open lawn of 0.5 acres that wraps around in an L-shape. There is a centrally located flower bed with flower urns, a bench and an arch. Tubs of flowers line the terrace and roses line the main pathway through the garden. KENSINGTON SQUARE
The Number 10 Downing Street garden and tour is only accessible by participation in a public ballot. Forty lucky entrants will be selected at random to participate on the tours taking place at 11am and 2pm on Saturday 8th June. For further information about entering the ballot see www.opensquares.org
There is also a vegetable patch where produce includes radishes, spring onions, beetroot, cress, carrots and leeks. There are bird tables where birds as exotic as a parakeet have been seen feeding. The garden has provided a casual setting for a number of significant gatherings, including the press launch for the announcement of the coalition government in May 2010 and in 2011 a barbeque for military personnel hosted by the Camerons and Obamas. Also, the London 2012 school games competitors used the space

The Chelsea Fringe 2013 18TH MAY – 9TH JUNE 2013
This year is the second annual Chelsea Fringe, with more than 150 inspiring and eclectic projects signed up and ready for the alternative gardening festival.
T
he 2013 Fringe runs a variety of projects at venues across London, and for the first time with satellite fringe events taking in Bristol, Brighton, Kent and even Vienna, Austria. The Fringe was created to run alongside the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show, but is completely independent. This year’s Fringe boasts an incredibly varied range of projects, created by an army of willing volunteers. The only rules for a project to be able to join the Fringe is that they must be interesting, legal and inspired by gardening, gardens, plants or landscapes. This year it includes pop-up gardens, art exhibitions, street installations, community gardening events and a host of talks and demonstrations. The majority of the events are free to visit and several take place in some of London’s most interesting and high profile venues, such as Battersea Power Station, Covent Garden and the Inner Temple. Other locations include community spaces, streets and small urban oases, all waiting to be discovered during the three weeks of the Fringe. Chelsea Fringe founder and director Tim Richardson says: “Our first Fringe in 2012 was generally considered to be successful and we were nervous about bettering it. But it looks like we might nearly double in size in this our second year, since registration of events continues right up until and even throughout the Fringe. The almost-anything-goes ethos of the Fringe brings out incredible creativity in the project volunteers who have created three weeks of exciting events that everyone can enjoy, with most free to visit.” www.facebook.com/chelseafringe twitter.com/chelseafringe www.chelseafringe.com

ABOUT THE CHELSEA FRINGE The second Chelsea Fringe will begin on Saturday 18th May 2013 and run for three weeks, at a host of different venues and settings across London. Building on the success of the inaugural 2012 Chelsea Fringe, it will feature a wonderful mixture of public spectacles, horticultural happenings and community celebrations. The Fringe is all about harnessing and spreading some of the excitement and energy that fizzes around gardens and gardening. The idea is to give people the freedom and opportunity to express themselves through the medium of plants and gardens, to open up possibilities and to allow full participation. Entirely independent of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (though acting with its support), the Fringe explodes out of the showground geographically, demographically and conceptually. Its events (over 100 in 2012) encompass everything from grassroots community garden projects to avant-garde art installations.

Tuesday 18th June until Saturday 22nd June
2013
In addition to the Furlong Club, introduced last year, with its elegant seating, private bar and decked terrace, offering excellent views of the track overlooking the finishing straight, new for 2013, Ascot is proud to introduce the Pavilion Club, located in the well-appointed pavilion building with views towards the Parade Ring and plaza lawns. Offering stylish seating and access to a range of tantalising food offerings, an extensive pay bar and betting facilities, customers can relax in the private lawn directly in front of the club in between races. The Pavilion Club badges are priced at £60 per person per day, but must be booked in addition to a Grandstand Admission ticket. Tickets start from £62 per person. This experience is for over 18s only. Royal Ascot’s opening day gets off to an impressive start with no less than three Group 1 races – the most prestigious races in the world: The Queen Anne Stakes, The King’s Stand Stakes, the first British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge; and The St James’s Palace Stakes, the feature race of the day. As the first day of Royal Ascot, the atmosphere is always one of excitement and anticipation. The racecourse and grounds look magnificent; ideal surroundings for the first Royal Procession that signals the opening of the Royal Meeting. After the last race, racegoers can celebrate their winnings by joining in with the traditional singing around the Bandstand. The highlight and feature race of the second day is the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes. Established in 1862, it’s arguably the most important race of the Royal Meeting. Past winners include Rewilding, Byword, Manduro, and Ouija Board. Also on the card are two Group 2 races: The Windsor Forest Stakes, for older milers, and The Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, for the best up-andcoming two-year-old fillies. Wednesday is the perfect day for groups of friends to enjoy the Royal Ascot experience at a slightly gentler pace.
Style and elegance combine for the height of the summer social calendar on Gold Cup Day, colloquially known as ‘Ladies’ Day’. Although the whole week at Royal Ascot is a fashion show like no other, it is Thursday when the designer creations and millinery masterpieces reach the greatest heights. Thursday’s highlight and feature race is the Group 1 Gold Cup, a battle of stamina and determination over two miles and four furlongs. This gruelling long distance world championship is not for the faint-hearted. The feature race on Friday is the Coronation Stakes, which traditionally brings together the leading three-year-old fillies in Europe. Also on the card is the King Edward VII Stakes, which was formerly known as the ‘Ascot Derby’, as its conditions mirror those of the Epsom Classic. In 1926 the race was renamed in memory of King Edward VII. This penultimate day at Royal Ascot is the perfect way to start the weekend with friends and colleagues. The final day of the Royal Meeting always provides a dramatic climax, featuring one of the world’s most important sprint races: The Diamond Jubilee Stakes. As the second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, it is also Britain’s joint most valuable sprint race, alongside the Darley July Cup at Newmarket. Trophies for the “QIPCO Royal Ascot Top Jockey” and “QIPCO Royal Ascot Top Trainer” will be presented on this day to the jockey and trainer amassing the most wins during the week. All seven Group One races at Royal Ascot are part of the QIPCO British Champions Series. Although the fashions are as elaborate as they are during the rest of the Royal Meeting, there is a relaxed family feel, as many people who are unable to attend during the week come along to enjoy the experience of the greatest race meeting in the world. Hampstead welcomes Affordable Art Fair for summer first 13th – 16th JUNE 2013 - LOWER FAIRGROUND SITE, EAST HEATH ROAD, HAMPSTEAD, NW3 1TH

isplaying art on your walls is the perfect way to personalise your space and create a home that feels your own, but buying original art can be a daunting task. Not knowing where to start and a lack of art-world knowledge too often keep us from discovering art we will cherish forever. The Affordable Art Fair provides a welcome antidote. Defined by its relaxed, unstuffy atmosphere, thousands of visitors pass through its doors each year and leave with a piece of art they love tucked under their arm. The fair again is set in the scenic surroundings of Hampstead Heath this June, moving for the first time from its usual Autumn spot to a summer showing. With 110 galleries set to bring the best of their collections to the fair, visitors will have the chance to pick from thousands of paintings, original prints, photography and sculpture, all available to take home the very same day. With all art exhibited priced between £40 and £4,000, and with a great deal of work on show available to snap up for under £1,000 there is something for every taste and the most generous, or modest, of budgets. The Affordable Art Fair is a favourite among first timers and seasoned collectors alike and the fair prides itself on making art accessible to

all. You don’t have to be an art expert to enjoy the fair as visitors are encouraged to spend time browsing the hundreds of collections and chatting to galleries, maybe stopping for a bite to eat or a glass of wine along the way. The key, says Romy Westwood, Fair Director, is to “follow your heart, be totally open-minded and be prepared to surprise yourself. Don’t be afraid to mix contemporary with traditional, and do ask questions – our galleries will be more than happy to tell you about the artists they work with and how the pieces were created.” There’s more than just art on show at the fair on the Heath this summer; you can get creative in artist-led hands-on workshops, enjoy one of the informal tours and talks and, for those with little ones, take advantage of the free Kids Creche. Romy’s top tip? “Take your time and have fun - picking out the perfect piece should be enjoyable not exhausting!”
Visit www.affordableartfair.co.uk to sign up for email updates, buy tickets or purchase gift vouchers for any of the fairs, or call 020 8246 4848.

The West Course at Wentworth Club will be the stage for golf fans to enjoy a belated celebration of that epic comeback when the ‘twelve good men and true’ attempt to capture The European Tour’s flagship event in front of another huge crowd from May 23-26. Led by World Number Two, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, and defending champion, Luke Donald of England, who is seeking to emulate Colin Montgomerie’s record of three consecutive victories, the Ryder Cup heroes and their inspiring leader, Olazábal, should guarantee a sense of excitement and electrifying atmosphere at the Surrey venue. Winning captain Olazábal welcomed the news that his team will assemble once

more at Wentworth Club and commented: “I am delighted that the British public will get the chance to see all of my Ryder Cup team in action at Wentworth in May. Medinah was an unforgettable experience for everyone who was there, whether it was as a player, captain or spectator, and the BMW PGA Championship is the perfect setting for the players to be reunited to show what they can do as individuals as opposed to the team environment. It promises to be a great tournament.” McIlroy is relishing the chance to get together with his team-mates again, even though, on this occasion, they are intense rivals chasing the record first prize of $791,660 from the increased prize fund of $4.75 million. “It will be great to have The Ryder Cup Team back together for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth”, he said. “It was such a special Ryder Cup, one that will have a special place in history, and I don’t think anyone associated with that Team will ever get tired of celebrating it.”

McIlroy’s fellow Northern Irishman and Major champion, Graeme McDowell, added: “Any time the Tour gets a winning Ryder Cup Team together is pretty special, but this year will have that little bit extra because of the nature in which that particular Ryder Cup was won. To be a part Europe’s biggest ever comeback was just an amazing honour, and I am sure there will be nice Ryder Cup vibe to the BMW PGA Championship this year.” Justin Rose, who lost to Anders Hansen in a play-off in 2007 and was tied second with another of the Medinah marvel, Paul Lawrie, last year, enthused: “The BMW PGA is one of the best tournaments of the year and, for European Tour Members, it’s our big show, the one where we display what our Tour is all about so it’s one that I think every player has an eye on throughout the year and one that we all get going for.”
Ryder Cup rookie Nicolas Colsaerts can’t wait for the chance to get together with his fellow history-makers in May. He said: ““It’s going to be cool to have the Team back together. The way golf is nowadays and with everybody playing all over the world, it’s pretty rare to get all of the guys together so to have us all in one place at the home of The European Tour will be great. “ Heroes of Medinah abound, from the talismanic Ian Poulter to Martin Kaymer, who holed the vital putt which ensured Europe retained the trophy, will be back at Wentworth Club aiming to add the BMW PGA title to the BMW International Open crown he claimed in 2008. Also lapping up the superb atmosphere created by the Tour’s flagship event will be Francesco Molinari – whose half point secured the outright win – six-time Ryder Cup winner Lee Westwood, former Open Champion Paul Lawrie and Sweden’s Peter Hanson while there is sure to be a special ‘welcome back’ to Sergio Garcia, who last competed in the event in 2000.
A superb package of fun, celebrity-spotting and world class golf will take place over a six-day period, representing outstanding value for practice day, celebrity pro-am day and the four rounds of the event.
The popular celebrity pro-am day includes, from the world of football… Matt Le Tissier, Glenn Hoddle, Jamie Redknapp, Harry Redknapp, Ian Wright and Theo Walcott, Cricketers Sir Ian Botham and Andrew Strauss, plus other sportsmen including Tim Henman, Boris Becker, Greg Rusedski, Matt Dawson, A P McCoy, Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent and from the world of TV and Radio….Sir Bruce Forsyth, Anton du Beke, Philip Glenister, Jodie Kidd, Chris Evans, Vassos Alexander, Jeremy Kyle, Dan Walker, Steve Rider, Chris Robshaw and Naga Manchetty. FOR RICHER FOR POORER Resolving the finances comes as an inevitable consequence of any marriage breakdown. For some couples a “clean break” is preferable. This severs any ongoing financial ties between the husband and wife. For many families, in particular where there are young children, this may not be practical or desirable. If one party has the primary care of the children, there is a big disparity in incomes, or there is simply not enough money available, maintenance may be ordered or agreed. Maintenance for children will terminate either when the children reach the age of 18 or cease their education (school or university). Maintenance for a spouse is less arbitrary. The payment term can be a defined period, i.e. for a few years to allow the recipient to get back on their feet, or for much longer. In a long marriage with young children it is not unusual to reach a financial settlement where maintenance is paid on a “joint lives” basis – until the death of the payer. Unlike capital settlements, maintenance is not set in stone. If there is a significant change in either party’s circumstances then an application to vary can be lodged at the court. This flexibility is vital where orders can span decades. The payee’s co-habitation or the loss of a job are common triggers behind an such an application. The current economic climate has inevitably generated a rash 02/05/2013as 13:54:43 of logo.pdf court action people struggle to adjust to reduced financial circumstances. Where “joint lives” orders have been made, the paying party’s retirement and consequent income reduction make an application to vary almost inevitable. In all cases, for an application to be successful, the judge will need to be satisfied that the change in circumstances is significant and long term. Payment of maintenance, although vital to meet the families’ ongoing needs, can create animosity and keep the parties allied to one another for years after the relationship has broken down. The paying party, usually the husband, may resentful about the ongoing liability. The receiving party, usually the wife, may feel insecure about their financial dependency.

However, all is not lost. Even if a clean break was not achievable at the time of the initial settlement, changes to the parties’ circumstances may mean it becomes realistic in the future. On retirement, if the wife receives a share of the husband’s pension or has her own pension provision, the parties may have similar income levels. At this stage it may be appropriate for the maintenance to reduce on a nominal level, or be dismissed entirely. Alternatively, if the husband has had the opportunity to build up capital during his working life he may be in a position to” capitalise” and buy out the wife’s further claims with a lump sum. Henley Regatta
ne of the most important dates in the British social and International rowing calendars, the Henley Regatta is the epitome of an English summer day and is steeped in history. e Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, except during the two World Wars. e first regatta took place on a single afternoon; however its popularity with the oarsmen extended the race to two days. Later in 1886 the event was extended to three days and in 1906 a further day was added, lengthening the regatta to a four-day event. By 1986 it was further extended to five days proving its popularity with the British public during the summer. Originally staged by the Mayor and people of Henley as a public attraction with a fair and other amusements, the emphasis rapidly changed so that competitive amateur rowing became its main purpose.
4 324 MMAAYY22001 133
e Regatta occupies a unique position in the world of rowing. It has its own rules and is not subject to the jurisdiction either of the governing body of rowing in the U.K. (British Rowing) or of the International Rowing Federation, but is proud of the distinction of being officially recognised by both these bodies. e length of the Course is 1 mile 550 yards, which is 112 metres longer than the standard international distance of 2,000 metres. It takes approximately seven minutes to cover, so there are often two races at once on the course for much of the day. e number of races is, of course, reduced on each successive day, leaving only the Finals to be rowed on the last day. Since 1884 the Henley Regatta has been organised by a self-electing body of Stewards, at present numbering 60, most of whom are well-known and successful rowers and scullers. e Stewards' primary consideration in all their decisions is the best

interests of those who are competing in the races. e regatta today is one of the biggest events in the British and International social calendars and sees thousands of spectator’s crowd around the banks of the River ames every day. e private enclosures are the best way to see all of the sporting action in style and comfort and there is a wide variety on offer from Temple Island to the Stewards Enclosure. One of our favourite private enclosures is “rhubarb’s” River Lounge which offers a relaxed, sophisticated and stunning environment. e River Lounge is situated opposite the world famous Temple Island, only yards from the starting line. e famous Temple Island is situated a mile and a half downstream of the picturesque market town of Henley, on one of the most beautiful reaches of the River ames. Located amidst rolling water meadows and surrounded by wooded hills, it marks the start of the famous Henley Regatta Course and was a recent feature in the Olympic opening ceremony. e Temple itself is a delightful folly, designed by James Wyatt as a fishing lodge for Fawley Court, the Christopher Wren mansion on the Henley Reach, from which the Temple completed a charming prospect through an avenue of trees and provides a stunning view for the River Lounge and other enclosures. ere is no formal dress code in many of the enclosures except the Stewards, however most spectators wear smart clothing with some guests opting for traditional Regatta attire in the form of lounge suits for men and dresses for ladies. Many of the enclosures start the day early including the River Lounge and Temple Island, whereby guests enjoy a delicious champagne and canapé breakfast. e River Lounge goes further
though, by creating beautifully sculptured gardens with alfresco seating and erecting a stunning marquee with a contemporary interior. e lounge serves gourmet cuisine throughout the day, a complimentary bar, live background music, head and neck massages and offers a river cruise on-board the Lilly Anna. River cruises are another great way to see the river and to explore the Regatta course but make sure you book early to avoid disappointment. Food and drink are as important as the racing during the regatta and there is a wide variety on offer from celebrity chefs to royal caterers across the course. “rhubarb” for example serve a variety of best of British and European menus from canapé and bowl food selections to stunning puddings and mains. Dishes include seasonal produce such as roasted rump of Welsh lamb, boulanger potatoes, green peas “à la Française”, buttered spinach and rosemary jus for a main or a choice of miniature puddings including Tiny Eaton mess, Pimms Royale jelly with summer berries, Mini summer pudding, Scottish raspberries and lemon curd in bitter chocolate pastry tartlet and Sherry trifle. e Regatta is easily accessible from Henley town centre with a quick trip over Henley Bridge towards Maidenhead. Parking is directly to the rear of the enclosures and is well sign posted. Races start from as early as 7.30am on some days and can go onto the early evening. Traffic can be a problem around the Regatta so make sure you leave plenty of time when setting off. Henley Royal Regatta 2013 is being held from Wednesday 3rd July to Sunday 7th July. The St John’s Wood Classic and Supercar Pageant SUNDAY JUNE 23rd 11AM - 5PM St John’s Wood is well known for its sightings of incredible cars, so to have North London’s very first street closure featuring a dazzling array of Classic and Supercars down the length of St John’s Wood’s fashionable High Street seems to be the natural choice for a wonderful family Sunday Day out.
H
.R. Owen will be displaying a selection of Supercars featuring their latest Ferraris, Maseratis, Rolls Royces, Bentleys and Aston Martins. Added to that will be a stunning array of approximately 30 Classic Gems, rarely seen on London’s streets, including Fangio’s 1956 Mille Miglia Ferrari, a 1928 Speed Six Bentley, Clark Gable’s beautiful Mercedes 300SL Roadster and Stirling Moss’ winning 250 GT Ferrari. A selection of pre and post war classics will also be on display from, amongst others, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, Lamborghini and Porsche plus more affordable beauties such as an Austin A35 and a very early Mini.
The selection of Vintage cars on display include.. 1957 Mercedes 300 SL Roadster When you see that the owner’s logbook of this beautiful Mercedes 300SL Roadster has the name Clark Gable, the star of Gone with the Wind, you realise that this is a very special car. The supercar of its time, with its direct injection 6 cylinder 3 litre engine, it was owned by Gable from 1958 until his death. The SL (standing for Sport Leicht) was delivered to San Francisco by sea freight and is one of only approximately 1800 Roadsters that were a derivative of the famous Mercedes Gullwing. The Roadster completed a 2 year frame off restoration by renowned specialists HK Engineering in 2009. 1953 Bentley ‘R’Type Continental Despite its name, the two-door Continental was produced principally for the domestic home market, the majority of the 207 cars produced being righthand drive, with 43 left-hand drive examples. The chassis was produced at the Rolls Royce Crewe factory with a 4.9 litre engine. This Mulliner bodied example was sold new in France to The Ritz Hotel and is one of only 3 with a steel sunroof. The current owner has cherished her since 2001 and gave her the appropriate number plate: 53 B 1954 Jaguar XK120 Roadster When launched into Britain’s post war austerity in 1948, the XK120, so called because of its amazing top speed of 120 mph, caused a sensation. This example, configured on a proper XK120 Chassis, is a ‘John May’ special built 4 4 M AY 2 0 1 3
for a ‘classic’ car collector. It took over three years to complete being strongly influenced by the Le Mans winning ‘D’ Type for its interior, with 6 inch dials in an angled ‘D’ dash board. It has a 4.2 litre 330 bhp engine and it does 0 to 60 mph in circa 6 seconds. Ferrari 1956 290MM 3500 cc V12 Sports Car Chassis 0656 was built for the World Champion, Juan Manuel Fangio for Ferrari’s assault on the 1956 World Sports Car Championship. The car’s first race was the Mille Miglia, a thousand mile race around Italy. It rained continuously and Fangio, driving without a co-pilot, brought the 290MM home in 4h place and promptly collapsed from physical exhaustion. The car subsequently was raced by no less than 7 works Ferrari drivers over a two year period gaining amongst others, a 2nd place at the Nurburgring and 1st in Buenos Aires in 1957, beating the works Maseratis. The car is completely original and has had 4 previous owners over a 57 year period. 1960 Porsche 356 Roadster This Porsche is a 1960 T5B Drauz Roadster, sporting a taller removable chrome pillared windscreen and sliding glass side windows. The car was built in July 1960 with a 75bhp 1600cc standard pushrod engine but this has been replaced with a 1964 Carrera four cam 2 litre engine The 130bhp bevel driven, twin spark engine was the ultimate 356 engine designed and the car is very lightweight at 870kg. The Roadster had a two year bare metal restoration by Sportwagen. This car travels long distances every year to Europe for Porsche’s International 356 International Rally. The day will benefit two worthy charities: Rays of Sunshine https://www. raysofsunshine.org.uk/, a wonderful organization which grants wishes to seriously ill children in the UK and the local charity, The St John’s Hospice http://www.stjohnshospice.org.uk/ . With a fun fair for the youngsters, the local influence of Abbey Road allowing for an accompaniment of Beatles music and some of the best fashion shops and restaurants north of the Congestion Zone open for business, The St John’s Wood Classic and Supercar Pageant makes the perfect day out for the whole family.

THE £250 MILLION HOME London House Set To Become UK’s Most Expensive Property
T
he six-storey Grade I listed Regency mansion boasts 50,000 sq ft of living space, nearly as large as a whole football pitch, making it one of the capital’s largest private homes. With a view of St. James’ Park and within walking distance of Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. It is situated off The Mall, and is one of the most exclusive streets in London with few residential properties. Reports have suggested that a ‘strictly confidential’ brochure, which describes 18 Carlton House Terrace as ‘probably the finest residence in London’ has been circulating among the super-wealthy. The property is registered in the British Virgin Islands, and said to be owned by a member of the Saudi Royal family. The secret brochure apparently shows interior photographs which were taken in the 1890s, because the current owner does not want to advertise the contents of his home for security reasons. Details on the interior are sketchy, but there is believed to be a magnificent double staircase and a huge ballroom. According to reports, the house has four storeys above ground and two below, that could be converted into a spa, cinema, and swimming area. The owner has reportedly spent millions restoring the town house to its former glory. Property expert Henry Pryor, who pointed out that the ‘nearest corner shop will be Fortnum & Mason’, said: ‘I think it will almost certainly be bought by a foreign buyer.’
4 8 M AY 2 0 1 3
The property is 1,537 times more expensive than the average house sold last month in the UK, which was worth £162,606. At the asking price, the buyer will face a £17.5million bill for stamp duty. Despite the shaky economic recovery, 2012 was a record year for sales in London worth more than £5million, according to research by estate agent Savills.
18 CARLTON HOUSE TERRACE ST JAMES’S SW1
Last year, more than 400 properties were sold over that threshold, up from 350 in 2011. With so many properties now fetching nine-figure sums, oligarchs might be tempted to move to Kensington’s Egerton Crescent, Britain’s priciest street - where they can pick up a bargain with the average house costing just £8million. If 18 Carlton House Terrace reaches its £250million asking price, it will be the UK’s most expensive home - but it is not the only super-pricey property to reach the market in the past year. Last autumn, a huge house at Rutland Gate overlooking Hyde Park was put on sale for £300million, although its price was slashed when it failed to find a buyer. Around the same time, 1 Cornwall Terrace, opposite Regent’s Park, was advertised for £100million, which estate agents said was the highest price ever asked for a terraced house. Outside Central London, Heath Hall in Hampstead was also marketed at £100million - which later had to be lowered to £65million. Cambridge House on Piccadilly, formerly home to the In and Out Club, is currently being renovated and could fetch more than £200million when it is sold. The previous record for a London sale is £136 million paid for a property at One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge.

City of London Festival 2013 Full Programme Announced 23rd JUNE – 26th JULY 2013
F
ollowing its acclaimed and record-breaking 50th anniversary season, the annual City of London Festival has announced its full 2013 programme, promising once again to animate the Square Mile with its customary extravaganza of music, dance, art, film, poetry, family and participation events, transforming some of the City’s most iconic venues and outdoor spaces into a wealth of creative activity for everyone to enjoy. The 2013 Festival offers another entertaining but innovative and thoughtprovoking programme rooted in three main, interlocking themes: city walls – connecting the City of London with Derry~Londonderry and other historic walled cities from Utrecht to Jerusalem; conflict and resolution; and trees, sustaining the Festival’s artistic responses to the environment. The Festival will reflect on significant historical landmark anniversaries, including the 400-year relationship between the City of London and Derry~Londonderry, the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Utrecht and the 100th anniversary of Benjamin Britten – one of Britain’s most important composers. Programme highlights include: World class concerts: great artists will appear in St Paul’s Cathedral for a series of high-profile ticketed concerts. An historic celebration of Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate, premièred in St Paul’s in July 1713, will frame the first performance of The Idea of Peace by Adrian Williams. In the final St Paul’s performance the London Symphony Orchestra and Tenebrae renew their acclaimed partnership in a programme which ranges from Josquin to Richard Strauss and concludes with a special, one-off combination of Barber’s iconic Adagio and Agnus Dei.
beautiful Livery Halls, a particular highlight is promised: At Sixes & Sevens, a new choral and orchestral work by Mark-Anthony Turnage and poet Paul Muldoon commissioned by the City of London and The Honourable The Irish Society to mark the 400 year relationship with Derry~Londonderry will be performed simultaneously in both the Guildhalls of London and Derry. In Mansion House, a concert by the Britten Sinfonia will resolve the conflict between Apollo and Dionysius in music by Stravinsky, Britten and David Matthews, framed by Vivaldi’s evergreen The Four Seasons. In the squares and gardens of the City will be filled with a diverse programme of music, street theatre, circus and dance, free for all to enjoy. Walks, talks and thought provoking debates: visitors to the Festival can experience a stimulating programme of walks, talks and debate that compliment this year’s themes Join together with a host of leading musicians, expert speakers, therapists, arts practitioners, neurologists, philosophers, historians and soldiers to explore the relationship between music and conflict. Free summer events programme: the Festival will continue to open up the outdoor spaces of the City and beyond to a wide range of audiences with over 100 free events programmed across a wide range of art forms. Highlights include a Family Day on Hampstead Heath entitled Irish Roots – a celebration of Northern Irish culture and heritage. Beoga, one of the most exciting new traditional bands to emerge from Ireland, headline the bandstand and activities include a Gaelic Games, storytelling inspired by the Northern Irish-born C S Lewis and Irish reeling around Parliament Hill Fields.
New commissions: once again the Festival will present a wealth of world premières and new work. A highlight this year – with the working title Trees, Walls and Cities – will feature a newly-commissioned song cycle for the Brodsky Quartet and soprano Loré Lixenberg, linking Derry~Londonderry, the City of London, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Dubrovnik, Nicosia and Jerusalem in creative reconciliation. A theme running through the texts will be trees – symbolic of life, freedom, nourishment, environment, building and peace. The songs will be brought together in an interlocking suite of musical material, composed by Nigel Osborne, creating a coherent journey between the styles and characters of the songs and cities.
Mobile Orchard: a pop-up mobile orchard with real and manufactured trees will take root at a number of City locations throughout the Festival period. Part installation, part performance platform, passersby will be transported from the inner city to a leafy glade where they will be able to enjoy music, street theatre, dance and participatory activities as well as discovering more about native British orchards and the City’s trees.

CHELSEA PENSIONERS’ WAR STORIES SAVED FOR THE NATION Chelsea Pensioners’ wartime stories are being captured in an exciting new collaboration between the National Army Museum and the Royal Hospital Chelsea. ‘The Old and the Bold’ is an audio-visual history project which aims to document and store the personal accounts, expertise and careers of the remarkable residents of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Their recollections on iconic moments in military history such as the London blitz and D-Day will become part of the Museum’s collection of oral history interviews with soldiers, which includes accounts from the First World War to the present day. Items from the Museum’s Collection, such as uniform, equipment, weapons and personal kit, will act as conversation catalysts, unlocking the Pensioners’ stories and sparking discussions which will provide valuable insights into the Collection items as well as the soldiers’ own experiences.

The Museum has received initial support towards its £11.3m HLF bid, including £350,000 development funding. About the National Army Museum The National Army Museum explores the impact of the British Army on the story of Britain, Europe and the world; how Britain’s past has helped to shape our present and our future and how the actions of a few can affect the futures of many. The National Army Museum was established by Royal Charter to tell the story of the Land Forces of the Crown wherever they were raised. Opened by the Queen in 1960, it moved to its current site in Chelsea in 1971. About the Royal Hospital The Royal Hospital Chelsea will be here for today’s young soldiers on the front line when they retire. Few British institutions can boast three centuries of unbroken service, and none is closer to the heart of the nation than ‘The Men in Scarlet’, the Chelsea Pensioners. Their home, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, was founded in 1682 by King Charles II to provide soldiers with a fitting home in their retirement. The Royal Hospital is proud to continue to serve its original purpose into the 21st Century. www.chelsea-pensioners.co.uk
Julian Farrance, Regimental Museums Liaison Officer, said: “This project will provide a unique record of the experiences of the soldiers of the Royal Hospital, so that future generations will benefit from knowledge that would otherwise be lost forever. ‘The Old and the Bold’ allows us to safeguard their stories for this and future generations to explore.” Colonel Simon C Bate OBE, Adjutant Royal Hospital Chelsea, said: “The Royal Hospital has very strong ties with the National Army Museum and I am delighted that our In – Pensioners are being provided with the opportunity of sharing their valuable experiences with this project. They have so much to give and such a record is an important part of our military heritage.” The project aims to capture the personal perspectives of soldiers who served in global conflicts for future visitors to discover, learn from and enjoy. It is part of the Museum’s exciting ‘Building for the Future’ project which will see the radical transformation of the Museum building as well as an extensive programme of community projects, nationwide tours and travelling exhibitions, together with Regimental Museum collaborations, loans and 5 8 M AY 2 0 1 3

MR FOGG’S “Around the World and Back to Mayfair”
S
ummer 2013 will see Mr Fogg’s arrive in Mayfair, a recreation of the actual home of Jules Verne’s most famous adventurer, Phileas Fogg. Mr Fogg’s will be the first West End project from Inception Group, whose founders Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling have also created Chelsea speakeasy Barts, 80’s themed nightclub, Maggie’s and most recently the acclaimed Bunga Bunga, an Englishman’s Italian, Bar, Pizzeria and Karaoke venue. Modelled on the very Mayfair house in which Phileas Fogg would have lived after travelling Around the World in 80 Days, the bar will be refined but at the same time truly off-the-wall, breathing liveliness and fun into the West End. Guests will encounter all the wonders of the world without setting foot outside of London. As a private man, Mr Fogg’s home will be well hidden down a small side street off Berkeley Square and will maintain an element of secrecy like The Inception Group’s bar, Barts, the first speakeasy to open in London in 2009. A small plaque will mark a door with Victorian lanterns hanging outside. On arrival, guests will enter an immaculate hallway where Mr. Fogg’s trusty valet Passepartout will be on hand to take guests’ coats, umbrellas and calling cards. Mr Fogg’s will be modeled on the eccentric explorer’s period drawing room laden with artifacts and trinkets collected from his travels. The walls will be adorned with everything from stuffed Indian tigers and crocodiles to ornaments collected through his worldwide voyage. Annotated maps and pictures from his travels will also feature
7 2 M AY 2 0 1 3
prominently throughout the bar, as will clocks, given the importance Mr Fogg places on punctuality. A piano for sing-alongs and an open fireplace to welcome any weary traveller to its hearth will provide focal points. As Fogg was a hero of the Victorian age, guests will be able to toast an imposing portrait of its matriarch, Queen Victoria, hanging alongside paintings of him and his ancestors. Under the brilliant stewardship of Mark Jenner (formerly Bar Manager of The Coburg bar at The Connaught Hotel), Mr Fogg’s will provide an elegant global drinking adventure on each occasion. Mark will continually source rare and unusual products from each continent, seeking to open up guests’ imaginations and palates to new and daring combinations. The menu will be a unique interpretation of ‘Victorian Cocktailian Culture’, with many classics from that era being revived with a modern twist, such as: Absinthe Aperitifs, Gin Fizzes, Grog’s, Sazeracs, Stirrup Cups and Pouce Cafés. There will also be sharing drinks straight out of the pages of Jules Verne’s novel, served in the form of globes, red indian’s heads, steam trains and antique punch bowls. Founder and lifelong Fogg fan, Charlie Gilkes sums its up: “We’ve created Mr Fogg’s with a sense of history, adventure, fun and imagination. We hope to take you on a journey very soon-just don’t be late, we’re on a tight schedule!”

America’s No1 selling yoghurt brand, Chobani, now in the UK... Meet Hamdi – the man behind Chobani
H
amdi Ulukaya grew up on a dairy farm in eastern Turkey. He ate the thick, tangy yoghurt of his homeland day and night. In 1994, Hamdi moved to the US to learn English and study business, to pursue his own path. However, during his time at university, he couldn’t help notice a huge gap in high quality dairy products in America and started a company to make feta cheese for restaurants and food distributors.
In October 2007, Hamdi and his staff finished packing the first order of Chobani: 300 cases of peach, strawberry, and blueberry for a supermarket on Long Island, New York. After a week, the news couldn’t have been better: not only had customers returned for more Chobani, but they were also telling friends. By the middle of 2009, Chobani was selling 200,000 cases a week. Chobani has delivered against consumer expectations. Eating Chobani isn’t about any one thing but many—from the label to the pot, to what’s inside.
One day in 2004, as he was tidying his office, Hamdi came across a postcard advertising a decrepit yoghurt plant that Kraft Foods was closing down. The next day, he visited the 84-year-old facility, where Philadelphia cream cheese was invented. With the help of a small business loan, he bought it and the dream began. He called on Mustafa Dogan, a yoghurt maker from Turkey and close family friend. The two spent more than 18 months perfecting the recipe of what is now America’s top selling yoghurt brand.
Chobani in the UK In October 2012 Chobani started selling its thick and creamy yoghurt in selected Tesco’s nationwide. The range of flavours includes Black Cherry, Strawberry, Blood Orange, Pomegranate, Peach and Raspberry (170g). It recently started selling a large 454g pot of Plain that can be used in cooking, baking, recipe swaps or eaten with fresh fruit, granola or nuts.
Greek yoghurt is known in Europe and Asia as “strained” because whey—the water left after milk has been cultured—is filtered out, resulting in a thicker, creamier product. It takes a litre of milk to produce a litre of regular yoghurt, but it takes three litres to make one litre of Chobani. On a business trip, the name Chobani—a variation on çoban which is Turkish for ‘shepherd’ and symbolic of a gift that comes from the heart —popped into Hamdi’s head. “People say, ‘It’s yoghurt, who cares?’ But there’s emotion to it,” says Ulukaya. “You can make this a moment: the opening of it, the eating of it, the experience. I spent so much time on every single detail…”

airley House, described in the sunday Times as ‘The Gold standard’ is london’s leading day school for children with specific learning difficulties. We offer an education almost unique in that educational Psychologists, with speech, language and Occupational Therapists are integrated into the school curriculum. We enjoy a central london location with excellent facilities such as a science laboratory, art room and outdoor play space. Fairley House addresses the difficulties of children between 5 and 14 with dyslexia and dyspraxia. Children’s learning styles have often not been catered for in their previous school, leading to failure and loss of confidence, but Fairley House offers them a ‘level playing field’ where everyone has similar difficulties. Children receive a rich, stimulating educational experience integrated with therapy and specialist teaching. Teaching is multi-sensory and children learn science, spelling, Geography and History through interesting, hands-on activities. There is a staff: pupil ratio of 1: 3.5. The average stay is two to three years after which children return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude.
A full range of sport is available at Fairley House school, including touch rugby, football, netball, hockey and cricket. We use Battersea Park as well as the Queen Mother’s sports hall and swimming pool. We play fixtures against other schools and our after school clubs offer a wide range of activities.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS SORTED:
Summer Camp Suisse-Style They’ve been doing it in the USA for years, but now UK families are catching on to the idea of residential Summer Camps and judging by the feedback from the children who attend International Camp Suisse, it’s the hottest holiday ticket available this summer. Few working parents are able to dedicate six weeks or more to keeping their children entertained and occupied whilst juggling work commitments” says Camp Suisse’s founder Julie Tyler. “I think there’s a sense of wanting to ensure your kids do something worthwhile during the holidays that might be more focussed on their personal development than their academic abilities.” Inspired by the fabulous surroundings and wealth of activities and cultural opportunities in the Swiss Alps when the ski season ends, Julie set up International Camp Suisse at a purpose-built centre in Torgon, close to Geneva. The Camp offers children and teenagers aged from 7 to 17 the chance to enjoy a wide range of sports and outdoor pursuits, as well as cultural activities and language classes. It’s a winning formula with almost 40% of campers returning for a second year or more. Campers say that International Camp Suisse has real benefits from helping them with language skills and confidence building, to learning new skills and making new friends all over the world. Feedback from parents is equally positive with many praising the way the camp helped their children to mature, grow in independence and relate to new people as well as having the time of their lives. Families in Britain are following the lead of savvy parents from around
the globe and packing their youngsters off for a truly international experience. This summer the camp will welcome children from around the globe – marking the milestone of campers of 70 different nationalities with an impressive programme of activities that make the most of the spectacular Swiss Alpine environment including husky dog sledding on the glacier, rock climbing, mountain biking, ghyll scrambling, abseiling, survival skills, archery, tennis, river rafting, camp fire games, language classes and cultural visits. Campers are looked after by Camp Suisse’s skilled, experienced team many of whom return year after year for a season in Torgon. Julie comments: “We really try to create an unforgettable experience for campers and the team here is crucial. They are mature and enthusiastic young people with the ability to motivate and relate to children and teenagers. Our group leaders, language teachers and activity leaders are undoubtedly the single most important factor in giving the children the time of their lives and the feedback we receive from parents is consistently very positive.” International Camp Suisse runs from 29 June 2013. The minimum stay is one week with rotating programme of activities every two weeks. More information is available at www.campsuisse.com M AY 2 0 1 3 8 5

Giambologna, Holland & Sons, Clarice Cliff, Cartier, Chagall and Batman will all be on sale
T
he 41st Olympia International Art & Antiques Fair is London’s largest and most diverse collection of fine furniture, art and objects ranging from pre-historic fossils to contemporary art. Beautifully presented and encompassing a Mosimann’s restaurant and champagne bar, the show is a must visit for anyone looking to spend anywhere between £100 and £1million on a one-off piece for their home. The annual fixture attracts over 32,000 collectors, interior designers and homeowners all looking to buy from the 180 international exhibitors. Many of these are the leading experts in their field and keep their best pieces back just for this event. For the uninitiated, buyers can be reassured by the stringent ‘vetting’ process which checks that both the dealers and every piece of their stock reach a high standard. New exhibitors this year include: G Tomasso Ltd, 3 Details Ltd, Alessio Ponti Galleria d’Arte, Lucy Campbell, Roberto Cocozza Antichita S.R.L, ArtCast21, James Strang, John Newton Antiques, Mayflower Antiques, Raffaello Pernici, Salamon CC and Vivioli Arte Antica.
makers. Asian textile and furniture dealers, Galerie Arabesque, has a pair of 18th century scholar´s chairs also called yoke back, in fine Chichimu wood. Scholars were much respected authority figures in ancient China and all their tools are highly sought-after. The dealer also has some early 17th century pieces including very rare Imperial dragon roundels from the Yongchen dynasty, China. The robes with these dragon roundels were reserved for the immediate male kinship of the Emperor - his brothers, uncles, sons and nephews. He himself would wear a yellow dragon robe. New exhibitor G Tomasso Ltd has an important sculpture by Giambologna (1529 - 1608) Prometheus bringing Fire to Mankind in gilt bronze and standing 23.7cm high. The relatively small size and careful, though ‘sculptural’ (as opposed to goldsmith-like) finish, combined with the rarity of this cast, all suggest that it may have been created quite early in Giambologna’s career, when he was only just beginning to work for the Medici. It is on sale for in the region of £1million.
Making it a favourite with decorators, the Fair has over 30 furniture dealers covering all manner of genres from Asian to Queen Anne, as well as continental and 20th century design.
Among the Ceramics, Andrew Muir sells works by Clarice Cliff including a shaped tube vase decorated in the ‘Applique Blossom’ design c1931. The 464 shape tube vase was very rare, only appearing a few times in any design and this pattern is also very rare.
Kensington-based dealers Butchoff Antiques are selling some exceptional 18th and 19th century pieces of furniture from notable

Goodwood, signed and dated 1920. It would probably have been commissioned by the owner of the winning horse. The race is still part of the meeting known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’ that takes place at the end of July. The Reel Poster Gallery sells original film poster art from some iconic movies such as King Kong (1933) by Roland Coudon, which has a price tag of £25,000 and Batman (1966), by Tom William Chantrell (1916-2001), which is on sale for £4,500. Smith & Robinson has a large leather Gladstone bag by Harrods of London c1950 as well as a modernist silver box by A. Styles for Garrard, hallmarks, London 1968. Book Fair Week SATURDAY 8th - SUNDAY 16th JUNE 2013
Seven Fairs displaying Rare Books, Maps, Photographs and Ephemera have come together to set up the first London Book Fair Week. This is the first time all the fairs organisers have joined together to create a major event for both trade and public by holding all the major summer fairs in one week.

The fairs will be offering antiquarian and rare books, maps, manuscripts, prints, posters, ephemera and photographs. The London International Antiquarian Book Fair at Olympia, organised by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association, is the flagship event of the week, taking place from 13th-15th June, with the PBFA London International Summer Antiquarian Book Fair down the road at Earl’s Court on Friday & Saturday 14th -15th. There will be a FREE shuttle bus service between the Olympia and the PBFA fairs. London Book Fair Week kicks off with the London Map Fair at the Royal Geographical Society on 8th & 9th June - a must for all those with a keen interest in maps, collectors and novices alike. Bloomsbury is worth a trip on Sundays, with both the Ephemera Society London Fair and the Bloomsbury Summer Book Fair taking place within walking distance on the first Sunday, 9th June, and rounding off the week on 16th June are the Bloomsbury Summer Ephemera Fair and the London Photograph Fair, showing highlights from the early days of photography to modern day masters. Tickets for Book Fair Week are available from all the fair organisers. Freeze that Fat away
...in hour! Cooltech Before
Cooltech After
Cooltech Before
Cooltech After
When you’ve spent months in the gym trying to smooth out those annoying little areas where the fat simply won’t budge, it can be frustrating. You’ve put in plenty of effort, you’ve been watching the calories, but nothing seems to shift the pockets of fat. So what is the answer?
Y
ou could go under the knife, but it’s a bit extreme for small areas and surgery not only carries risks, but also leaves scars. Vaser is an excellent way of removing localised fat deposits, however, although the incisions are tiny so scarring isn’t an issue, you will need to wear a compression garment for several weeks after treatment and take things easy with regard to exercise for a while. It’s not sounding too good yet, is it? But now there is another solution – and one that involves no surgery, no anaesthetic or sedation, no scars, no compression garments, no downtime – and great results. It’s called CoolTech® Fat Freezing Technology and it is getting fantastic outcomes for people who just want to spot reduce stubborn areas. How does it work? You simply relax and read, listen to music or watch a movie and one or two suction cups are applied to the areas that are to be treated. It’s not painful so no anaesthetic is required. The fatty area is sucked into the cup and then the temperature is reduced gradually to -8°C. This won’t harm your skin, but will freeze the fat cells. The treatment lasts an hour and then your therapist will massage the area gently to smooth the contours out and you can drive home and carry on as normal. Firstly, let’s get things straight, it’s not a magical cure for obesity, it works on localised pockets of stubborn fat that won’t go away, so love handles, chubby abdomens (hiding your six pack that you’ve worked so hard on), flanks and thighs. You’ll need to be within 10-15% of your ideal weight and have reasonable skin tone. Secondly, it requires patience! There are no instant results as the fat cells will be emptied and your body’s natural system flushes the waste material away over time. Realistically it will be 4-6 weeks before you’ll see a difference,
9 6 M AY 2 0 1 3
although this can be speeded up by lymphatic massage during the weeks following the treatment. On the plus side the reduction is at a similar rate to that achieved by dedicated diet and exercise so all you friends won’t see a sudden difference. The results are gradual and nobody need know you’ve had treatment to help you achieve that buff body! The effects will continue to work for up to six months so you’ll see your troublesome bulges smooth out to create the streamlined silhouette you want. Is there a downside? You’ll be a bit sore – like you’ve overdone things at the gym for a few hours afterwards, but otherwise the only downside is that it will take time to see the results. It won’t stop you regaining weight if you don’t eat sensibly and keep in shape. Even though some fat cells will be destroyed, nearby cells will still be active and can increase in size, so you will need to stick with your nutrition and exercise routine. You’ll need to have reasonably good skin tone. For people who have lost a lot of weight and have loose skin, this isn’t the right treatment. To remove loose skin a tummy tuck is probably the only option, or for larger areas of fat removal, liposuction may be required. There are some things it doesn’t do – it isn’t a cure for cellulite, so if you were hoping that this could get rid of that dimpled look – you should consider the Med Contour treatment already available at Riverbanks.

Knee Pain
Non-Surgical Options for Osteoarthritis of the Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a common problem, symptoms develop in many people in their 40s and 50s and 90% of all people over the age of sixty years show some signs of OA.
O
steoarthritis is a condition involving the breakdown of articular cartilage in joints and is sometimes referred to as “degenerative joint disease”, or wear-and-tear. This results in areas of the joint where bones rub against each other leading to thickening of the edges of the bone and as a result spurs may form around the joint. People who suffer with OA knee have symptoms of pain, stiffness, swelling, aching in and around the joint and joint deformity, due to the changing shape of the bones and muscle spasm. Also muscle wasting occurs especially of the quadriceps (thigh muscles) and as a result they become weaker and tire more quickly. The cause of OA is not clear; however there are several factors that can contribute to the development. The common causes include: previous knee injury, repetitive strain on the knee, being overweight or obese and genetics (research has shown that OA often occurs in people in the same family). Treatment Options As OA is a degenerative disease there is no cure, however the good news is this is a gradual process and can be slowed with treatment. There are a wide range of treatment options, but the effectiveness of different treatments varies from person to person. The choice of treatment should be a joint decision between you and your treating physician. The treatment aims are to reduce pain, increase function and generally reduce symptoms. Surgery is only suited to people with severe OA, fortunately only one in four people with OA Knee need surgery. Physiotherapy is also important in the treatment of arthritis. By strengthening the muscles around the knee, you can improve the general “health” of your knee. Oral Medications Simple pain relievers such as paracetamol are available without a prescription and can be very effective in reducing pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAIDs are a more potent type of pain reliever and are available both over-the-counter and on prescription.
1 0 4 M AY 2 0 1 3
Glucosamine and/or chondroitin sulfate may be helpful in the early stages of OA. Intra-articular Injections Hyaluronic acid (Viscosupplements) is a component of normal synovial fluid and an important contributor to joint health. In OA, both the concentration and the molecular weight of hyaluronic acid are decreased, which reduces the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid. Therefore, intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid results in restoring the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid which helps to relieve pain. Corticosteroid injections are used for moderate to severe pain, they can also be very useful if there is significant swelling. Bracing and Orthotics Knee bracing and orthotics can help to unload knee by creating joint separation within the knee thereby reducing the wear and tear on the cartilage. These braces and orthotics work by pulling or pushing the knee into a position that creates space within the joint, which in turn reduces pressure on affected arthritic side of the knee. Studies have shown the unloading Knee Braces provide pain relief in 92% of patients and create visible joint separation in 80%. A brace can also help with stability and function Osteoarthritis of the knee has a great impact on mobility and ones quality of life. It is unnecessary to suffer in silence as there are various nonsurgical treatment options which can help with pain and get you back to the activities you love to do! T
he hay fever season has just started and rising pollen levels throughout the coming summer months will lead to misery for around 15 million people in the UK. “I think this year the season will be moderate to severe in terms of pollen intensity,” predicts hay fever expert Dr Jean Emberlin, director of PollenUK. “There’ll be bad days when people will suffer from our two main allergenic trees, birch and oak, particularly from birch which affects a quarter of sufferers, but I think it’s unlikely to be a catastrophically bad year.” Pollen’s effect - generally, the higher the pollen count, the stronger people’s symptoms - is governed by the weather, she points out. “Currently, there’s a North-South climate divide, with the North much more unsettled and wet, so although the pollen season has started in the South, it’ll probably be a couple of weeks before it begins in the North. “Wet weather dampens down pollen and makes it difficult for it to enter the air.” If birch and oak pollen seasons collide, because one starts later than normal, pollen levels can soar, but Emberlin isn’t expecting this combination of circumstances. “There’s often a small overlap between birch and oak. This year, the birch has started around three weeks later than normal but I think the oak will also be a little later,” she says. “So although that may cause added discomfort in the first 10 days of May when the birch pollen will still be around but past its peak, and oak pollen will be emerging, it shouldn’t be too troubling.” She forecasts that high or very high birch pollen counts on warm, dry days with some wind could occur until early or mid May, then oak pollen levels could begin to rise, depending on region and weather, while the grass pollen season is likely to

Sneezing, snuffling and itchy eyes can only mean one thing - after the big freeze, we’re now entering the big sneeze. start in late May or the beginning of June. Professor Roy Kennedy, a hay fever expert based at the University of Worcester, believes there’s a gloomier scenario ahead for sufferers. He predicts a sudden pollen surge in June caused by the combination of the longer winter and the potential for an early summer. Although he expects England to fare worst, he says: “Scotland could see a condensed tree pollen season. Hay fever sufferers could be badly affected and need to be aware of this. “The cold spring means a later start for pollen, with a pollen burst now in a condensed period, and the phenomenon of several pollens likely to peak at the same time. It means peak pollen levels will be early in the season, not later, as normal.” Emberlin predicts, in a report on behalf of Opticrom Hay Fever Eye Drops, that the number of hay fever sufferers in UK will rise by a third to 20 million sufferers by 2015, and will more than double to 31.8 million by 2030. Britain already has one of the highest rates of hay fever in the world, currently 25% of the population, rising to 37% in teenagers.“Climate change in the next few decades will have a notable impact on people’s health, especially for hay fever sufferers,” she says. “In the future, hay fever hotspots will be concentrated around large urban areas, such as London and Birmingham, where up to 45% of residents in those areas are set to suffer from hay fever in the next two decades. “This is the result of higher pollution and urban climates, which facilitate longer pollen seasons.” Check out key hay fever facts - including high-risk areas and remedies - so you can minimise your suffering this year.
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y
Pollen-heavy areas “Generally, the worst areas for those who suffer from birch pollen allergy are cities, where there can be many birch trees in parks, streets and gardens,” explains Emberlin. “Air pollution can both alter allergens on the birch pollen, making it more potent, and cause irritation to noses and throats, making it more difficult to clear allergens absorbed from the air.” Other risk areas for high birch pollen, she says, are inland where there is forest or woodland edges with birch, such as the New Forest, Central Weald and the Forest of Dean. Areas in the far North and West, especially coastal areas and extensive agricultural areas with little woodland, generally experience lower pollen counts. Typically, the grass pollen season lasts until late July or early August, and weeds and fungal spores can affect sufferers until early November. The Met Office has a pollen calendar at www.metoffice.gov.uk/health/public/pollen-forecast Who gets hay fever and why? Hay fever can develop at any age over about two years old, but typically starts in early adolescence or in early adulthood. Research, included in Emberlin’s report, indicates that certain risk factors make it more likely to occur in certain people - those born during the peak pollen seasons or just before and those whose family has a history of allergies. Also, more boys have hay fever than girls until adolescence. After adolescence many boys tend to grow out of it, leaving slightly more female sufferers. Other risk factors are a low number of childhood infections, so there’s a higher chance of developing autoimmune diseases and hay fever, and regular exposure to cigarette smoke during early life.

They also provide a bespoke service and can restore existing features to their former glory by removing deteriorated sections and casting and replacing them, in order to preserve the style and charm of the original period. There is an immense amount of ornate plasterwork in Great Britain
in many different styles. Over the years much has become damaged or destroyed. The means of restoring and conserving ornate plasterwork has changed over the centuries. While it is important to maintain as much as possible of the original plasterwork it may be necessary to restore or replace missing or damaged sections. To carry out this work requires considerable experience. Their modeller is able to take mouldings from existing designs, if symmetrical or modelling can be executed from a photograph or drawing. Plasterwork can be cleaned or left, a model laid down and a mould made in varying types of compounds, from this mould a section of plasterwork can be reproduced and installed. A cast is then produced which can then be installed to match the original. Their work is not limited to interior cornices, decorative ceilings, arches and columns. They also manufacture and install exterior mouldings, both ornate and plain. These can be produced in sand and cement, fibreglass or Jesmonite, a resin bonded cement. This product is lighter and more durable and comes in Limestone, Portland stone, Sandstone and plain white.

“It all began with my fascination for the cult movie The Italian Job,” says George. “What a film, it made me proud to be British. The dialogue, storyline and actors depicts Britain at it’s best, but for me the real stars of the show are the Mini cars. There wasn’t a place these iconic cars couldn’t go and my home was going to be no different.”

reenDawn Build have always been passionate about providing a top-quality service to its clients. They offer a complete design and build package so you only need to go to one company for your entire project. Managing Director Heath Gillett says “ this has proved popular with clients. The combined stresses of undertaking a building project, working full time and dealing with daily life mean most professionals don’t have time to be dealing with two or three separate companies. If they come to us, they have weekly site meetings with a Project Manager where they can talk about all aspects of their project. This approach allows for clear communication, resulting in a smoothly run project which we run from start to finish.” By employing several designers, GreenDawn Build can offer a variety of architectural styles, giving clients a wide range of design options. “One architect is very good at maximising and utilising space, while another designer has a very fresh and different approach for people looking to really change their property. Our company is about consistency and using people we can trust to do the absolute best job every time, so our design team fit into that perfectly.” GreenDawn Build use the same sub contractors for each job who work alongside their directly employed team of skilled trades people who are trusted and so will inspire absolute confidence from their

All of the people they employ are qualified and registered in their trades. Heath says: “I love my job and have a real passion for the housing and building industry. I’m careful about employing people with the same attitude, who get real job satisfaction from what we do. It’s a reflection on who we are as a company and I’m lucky to have a good team of tradesmen. A garden imbued with innovation and vision
T
Billy Clarke, owner and head designer at the London Landscaping Company, on creating small urban gardens that pack a big punch
his classic Kensington courtyard is about as small a garden as you can get. But just because it’s small, doesn’t mean that it can’t still look great. Although a challenge for any urban exterior designer, a small garden is still always an exciting prospect – one that requires innovation and vision.
One of the most interesting things about inner London is the variety and scope of its residential exterior spaces – be it roof terrace, courtyard or atrium. From the designers’ perspective, this is a very exciting area with garden, interior and architectural design coming together. The main objectives are to create perceived space, maximise light and create a strong focal point of interest. Minimalism can also play its part, using materials that reflect calm and cool neutrality. Stronger colours can be used as backdrop or to punctuate the space but not to be overused.
1 2 2 M AY 2 0 1 3
Furnishing should also be highly functional and very stylish. This is key for a garden such as the one pictured as it needs to stay fresh and be easily maintained. The beautiful handmade clay pots give a strong architectural dynamic to the courtyard too, bringing colour to the foreground without utilising precious space, also a good counterpoint to the water wall. This gives an excellent visual focal point from within, reinforcing the relationship between interior and exterior, creating a cool relaxing ambience and when lit is subtle, stunning and highly effective. Exterior spaces can be as much for looking at as being in – complimenting and enhancing your living space. LEAF MINER EATING LEAVES UNDER THE MICROSCOPE VIEW
Our Horse Chestnut is under attack!
T
he huge number of Pests now feeding on Horse Chestnut Trees has reached critical proportions and one could be forgiven for thinking that someone had put an ‘open for lunch’ sign on the Chestnut Tree. Horse Chestnut Scale, Bleeding Stem Canker and of course the pernicious Leaf Miner are threatening the trees future, precipitating the felling of these old and beautiful landscape trees.
Although it is often mistakenly reported that there is no remedy for this infection, there is, in the form of good cultural practice and recognised treatments. Raking up all affected leaves and disposing of them in the garden incinerator is a good start. Recent chemical treatments deployed internally within the tree have yielded excellent results.
DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE LEAF MINER ON A MATURE TREE
Today, the Horse Chestnut is under attack from the Leaf Miner Moth, its Caterpillars feed within the leaves causing distinct translucent tunnels on the leaf surface that coalesce by late July into brown dead patches on the leaves, thus creating the crisp brown appearance everywhere one looks. Evidence is mounting that the reduced photosynthetic ability may affect growth and the cumulative loss of stored food products may eventually lead to tree death, in addition the weakened tree becomes susceptible to attack by other diseases. 1 2 6 M AY 2 0 1 3
Where treatments have been applied in areas of recent outbreaks the treated trees have not contracted the Leaf Miner, with cyclic re-treatment providing long-term respite for the trees. While other diseases affect the Horse Chestnut, this threat is the most serious, markedly increasing the species decline.
If you suspect an infestation or want to return your Chestnut to its green summer look, please call your local Bartlett arborist for a consultation 020 7289 2211.
