Representing peace, unity and friendship, 8,000 inspirational people from around the UK will carry the Olympic Flame as it journeys across Britain between 19th May – 27th July 2012. Nominated by someone they know, it will be their moment to shine, inspiring millions of people watching in their community. Torchbearers will carry the Flame through more than 1,000 cities, towns and villages. The Olympic Flame will come within 10 miles of 95% of people in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. breathtaking landscapes and dynamic urban areas. The London 2012 Olympic Torch features 8,000 small cut-out circles, representing the 8,000 inspirational people who will carry it on its journey. The Torch was designed by east Londoners Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, who won the opportunity through a competitive tender run by the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Design Council. The Torch stands 800mm high and weighs 800 grammes, and is made up of an inner and an outer aluminium alloy skin, held in place by a cast top piece and base, perforated by 8,000 circles which run the length of the body of the Torch also offer a unique level of transparency. You can see right to the heart of the Torch
and view the burner system which will keep the Olympic Flame alive on its journey. More than half of the London 2012 Torchbearers are expected to be young people aged as young as 12, so the designers aimed to make the Torch as light as possible. The circles also help ensure heat is quickly dissipated, without being conducted down the handle, and providing extra grip. The triangular-shaped Torch was inspired by a series of ‘threes’ that are found in the history of the Olympic Games and the vision for the Olympic Movement: ✱ The three Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship; ✱ The three words that make the Olympic motto – faster, higher, stronger; ✱ The fact that the UK has hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, 1948 and will host them for the third time in 2012; ✱ The vision for the London 2012 Olympic Games to combine three bodies of work – sport, education and culture. As it makes its way across the UK on a 70-day journey it will bring the excitement of the Games to everyone.

or the past three years ‘Big Hitters’ have been making their way to Wimbledon not only for the summer Tennis Championships but for two weeks of glorious music making at the International Wimbledon Music Festival each November. write a work which premieres on Thursday 24th November. The tennis metaphors have come thick and fast, the latest with BBC Music Magazine declaring this years musical offering : “Wimbledon’s serve is perfect pitch’’, whilst other headlines have put the Festival on the international map. Gramophone has the festival among ‘The Best Events Worldwide’ and German Tokafi headlined: ‘Wimbledon Music Festival: Re-defining the Best’. So what is the ‘best’ at Wimbledon this year? Well you can’t do much better than this quartet of soloists – Nancy Argenta, Michael Chance, Allan Clayton and Roderick Williams – in Bach’s B minor Mass which opens the Festival on 12th November. Whilst closing the Festival on 27th November are the dazzling London Winds, one of the world’s most prominent chamber ensembles. Perhaps the scoop of the year comes with the UK premiere of a stunning, visual realization of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ at the hands of Russian pianist Mikhail Rudy and the great Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, who was inspired by the music to stage a work for ‘total theatre’ while he was at the Bauhaus in the late 1920s. Go to Wimbledon on 19th November to experience this remarkable event. Another major production will bring more than 100 of Merton school children to perform alongside international stars in a performance of Benjamin Britten’s community opera ‘Noye’s Fludde’. Students of Wimbledon College of Art have made spectacular life-size puppets to lead the groups of animals into the Ark. The professional forces include the Brodsky Quartet, recorder virtuoso Piers Adams of Red Priest fame, and international opera stars David Wilson-Johnson, and Catherine Wyn-Rogers as Mr and Mrs Noye, both the composer’s own choice when he recorded the work. He will also be playing with French Jazz legend, pianist and composer Claude Bolling, who is coming from Paris with his Trio as Wimbledon’s competition to the London Jazz festival at this same time. Apart from Mikhail Rudy and Claude Bolling, there are other superb keyboard artists: harpsichordists Trevor Pinnock, and Maggie Cole; and pianists Joanna MacGregor with percussionists Ensemblebash, and the young Korean Sunwook Kim, the youngest winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition. Last but not least are some outstanding string players: the wonderful Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque in a programme of Bach and Vivaldi concertos; the Brodsky Quartet in residence with two concerts; the London Schubert Players in an exciting programme built around Schubert’s the ‘Trout’; and Lawrence Power generally considered the finest viola player of his generation. Since its launch in 2007, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland has attracted a staggering 8 million visitors, firmly becoming the Capital’s most popular and dazzling winter event. With beautifully decorated attractions set out across 20 acres of historic parkland, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland provides festive fun over seven weeks. This year, PWR Events and The Royal Parks are delighted to announce that

the ice rink will be given a new home and will surround the Victorian Band Stand, creating a beautiful centre piece for Winter Wonderland. Stretching over 1,350m2, the outdoor rink will be the biggest of its kind in the UK. It will take 10 days to build using 100,035 litres of water which will be frozen at -12c. At night the ice rink will be transformed, as suspended above the rink will be 108,000 pea-lights illuminating the ice, creating a magical atmosphere for skaters. Other attractions making a return include the Giant Observation Wheel and the beautiful Angels Christmas Market, featuring over one hundred wooden chalets offering unusual and handmade gifts. A number of stalls will also feature traditional Christmas items such as wooden toys, nativity scenes and decorations. Last year
Father Christmas handed out over 50,000 presents to well behaved children, and he will make a welcome return this year as an ever popular free attraction. The UK’s favourite, Zippos Circus, also returns with two completely new shows – a daytime show for all the family, Zippos Christmas Circus starring Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
and friends, and an evening show for older thrill seekers, Zippos Cirque Extreme. For thrill seekers everywhere, Cirque Extreme is a jaw dropping, daredevil show combining some of the most thrilling and dangerous acts the world of circus has to offer. Top of the bill is the Motorbike Globe of Death, a beyond-thrilling spectacle starring three Brazilians riding together at up to 60mph in an unbelievably small steel globe. There will be perilous aerial work on the High Wire and Trapeze, death-defying antics on the rapidly-rotating steel Wheel of Death, reckless chainsaw juggling, thrilling fire acts and electrifying break dancing. There will be more bars, cafes & restaurants, including the new Carousel Bar, which rotates gently whilst you sip your mulled wine, and the Bavarian Village where you’ll find Bratwurst, bars and live music. In addition, there will also be the authentic Spiegel Saloon situated within a stunning ballroom, with its cosy booths, tables and chairs and cabaret acts. There will be three new and exhilarating thrill rides in the Alpine Adventure area alongside the ever popular Paower Tower, Christmas Coaster, Avalanche and Ski Jump Swing as well as more traditional rides and games. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is a fantastic day out for everyone, so be sure to book your tickets early and make Winter Wonderland part of your Christmas tradition.

he nation’s favourite comic and Hampstead resident, Michael McIntyre will switch on the lights at the Hampstead Christmas Festival. The lights, which are being specially designed for the Village have been generously sponsored by Savills, together with NW3Hampstead Business Group, and promise to have the ‘wow’ factor. Michael McIntyre will be on stage at 4.45pm to flick the switch to illuminate the spectacular 20ft Christmas tree and lights on Hampstead High Street and Heath Street. Frank Townsend, Director Savills Hampstead, said, ‘We are delighted to sponsor the Hampstead Christmas Lights this year and how wonderful that Michael McIntyre will switch them on! We are working with the lighting designers to ensure that the lights will make a real impact this year.’ 2011 marks the 5th Hampstead Christmas Festival and it is anticipated that it will attract record crowds. The chosen charity this year is Great Ormond Street Hospital, one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals with the broadest range of dedicated, children’s healthcare specialists under one roof. Hopefully, significant funds will be raised on the day for the charity. The High Street will be closed from 8am - 6pm. Activities will start with a free screening of the famous and ever popular Disney cartoon film, Peter Pan at 11am at the Everyman Cinema. Come early as it will be strictly first come first seated! In addition to Father Christmas’ grotto, there will be spectacular birds of prey, reindeers, fairground rides, a treasure hunt with prizes and a programme of music on stage ranging from traditional carol singers to a 50 strong rock choir. Fire-eaters will be there to amuse and entertain cramped outdated wards with new facilities allowing doctors & nurses to cater for an estimated 20,000 more patient visits a year. Technological and medical advances allow doctors to continue to improve the quality of care they can offer sick children. Medical equipment suitable for young people, children and babies is particularly expensive. Research into the best way to fight children’s illnesses is one of Great Ormond Street Hospital’s most important goals. One current project is to develop new and more personalised bone marrow transplants that reduce the need for cancer patients to have chemotherapy. The welfare of the patients is the hospitals’ primary concern. It costs as little as £50 for a parent to stay nearby the hospital for five nights. A VERY COVENT GARDEN CHRISTMAS
Covent Garden is embracing tradition this Christmas, making it the most festive neighbourhood in the West End!
k
nown for delivering unique cultural experiences and firsts, Covent Garden has partnered with award winning director and visual artist Martha Fiennes’ SLOimage to create ‘Nativity’, the world’s first animated nativity-scene, to be displayed on the Piazza. Completely self-generating the mesmerising technological art-work slowly changes, keeping viewers wondering as to what may happen next, who may become part of the narrative, whether it might rain or snow, or even transform into a magical night-time scene. Situated in the heart of Covent Garden’s traffic-free shopping area, ‘Nativity’ will be joined by a Christmas shopping extravaganza - ‘The Twelve Treats of Christmas.’ Running from 1st - 12th December the activity will be centred around a Snow Globe installation on the West Piazza. Lucky shoppers will be offered a chance to enter the Snow Globe and catch tickets to win a range of prizes from watches, to shoes to holidays - all combining to make Covent Garden the most interesting and fun shopping destination in London this Christmas. A gold coin donation to enter the Snow Globe will benefit Covent Garden’s Christmas charity partner, the Teenage Cancer Trust. A hand-picked, British grown Christmas tree will light up the West Piazza, whilst a 15ft topiary reindeer will be the centre piece of the East Piazza. Giant red baubles and mirror balls will fill the halls of the Market Building,

and new festoon lighting will illuminate the arches. Keeping the seasonal cheer, carol singing from some of London’s best-loved choirs will return to Covent Garden and the family favourite, live reindeer petting, will be taking place each Saturday. The locally loved Real Food Market will also be getting a Christmas makeover and from 24th November will be open from Thursday - Saturday. Rugby Ralph Lauren’s famous Tweed Run will also be kicking off from Covent Garden on the morning of 26th November. A seasonal favourite in New York City, the event will see over 400 tweed wearing cyclists do a lap of the Piazza before heading off on their leisurely jaunt around London. Gathering outside the Rugby Ralph Lauren store on King Street at 9am it is a sight not to be missed. Bev Churchill, Covent Garden London Brand Director, said: “Christmas is always a beautiful time to be in Covent Garden. Whether it’s the quietness of the ‘Nativity’ the fun and theatre of the Snow Globe, or the piping hot cider and mince pies from the Real Food Market, the neighbourhood offers something for everyone this Christmas.” Martha Fiennes, creator of ‘Nativity’ comments: ‘Covent Garden provides wonderful free world-class cultural content and I’m delighted that it has chosen the Nativity to be its Christmas installation. It’s thrilling to have direct contact with a huge
London events public audience, as Covent Garden enjoys very high footfall over this period. We are honoured to be giving the world premiere of the artwork in this prestigious venue.” You can also enjoy across the festive period:
Every Saturday from 12th November, Covent Garden Piazza will be filled with the sound of festive music as some of London’s best loved choirs sing traditional Christmas carols Covent Garden Christmas Food Market: From 27th November - 24th December the awardwinning Covent Garden Real Food Market will be in the Piazza from Thursday to Saturday each week, from 10:30am - 8pm Thursday and Friday and 10:30am - 6:00pm Saturday, selling special Christmas foodie treats. Apple Market: The historic Covent Garden Apple Market, home of the best of the UK’s handmade crafts and collectibles will be selling unique Christmas gifts every day in the Market Building from 10:30am - 6:30pm The Twelve Treats of Christmas: From 1st - 12th December, spend £100 in participating stores and win the chance to go in Covent Garden’s snow globe. Inside the lifesized snow globe, lucky shoppers will have a chance to win exclusive prizes from chocolates to holidays Reindeer Petting: Reindeer petting will return to the Covent Garden Piazza, every Saturday from 12th November from 12pm - 5pm, creating a perfect family picture opportunity

A Tree for Life Not Just For Christmas

his year make your Christmas tree count more than usual. If you live in or near London, you can buy a tree from The Christmas Forest - London’s largest and most ethical independent ‘treetailer’ with seven sites across London and a new internet shop. Every Christmas tree you buy, a new tree is planted by Tree Aid on the Forests for Food project in Africa. Since 2006, The Christmas Forest has donated over £60,000 towards Tree Aid’s planting projects - that’s over 70,000 new trees planted and many more families are thriving. The project works with some of the poorest people on earth and trees mean life for many of these Africans. Living with the effects of extreme poverty made worse by climate change, villagers are learning how to raise and care for trees thanks to Tree Aid. Trees are not only good for the environment but also for people. Trees often survive when other crops
fail so families can rely on a sustainable, nutritious variety of foods including fruit, nuts and even leaves and flowers. Trees give shade and shelter, food for animals, natural medicines, tools and fuel. “The money we have received has been a lifeline for African families using trees to battle poverty and climate change”, says Tony Hill, Programme Director at Tree Aid. For the last twelve years, Kelty Caston has been running the Christmas Forest and has become the biggest supplier of Christmas trees in London. His sustainably-sourced trees are cut in late November and early December, so you can be sure they are fresh and at their best. ‘Although every tree we source is replaced by another at a tree plantation, I wanted to go further. Tree Aid really impressed me. In Britain we appreciate trees for their beauty but perhaps we take them for granted: in Africa trees really do mean life for people.’ This year you can shop online and have a beautiful tree delivered to your door www.christmasforest.co.uk

harades is so last season. Years ago people were ridiculed if they held a dinner party and they didn’t actually cook. Today we embrace the personal chef catered for service. Why go out to eat when immaculate, delicious food can come to you? Recognising our need for bespoke catering, professional Chef Steve Evennett-Watts has provided us with Your Personal Chef Service
(www.yourpersonalchefservice. co.uk) to clients in central London and Surrey. Starting up the business last year Steve said “When the website went live, at the end of November 2010, we half expected the phone to start ringing off the hook - of course that didn’t happen at all. Our first enquiry was a man calling to place an order for braised red cabbage for an early staff Christmas dinner. When he gave his address as Buckingham Palace, [my wife] Karen laughed her head off thinking it couldn’t be true. But it was completely genuine and made me my first sale. Things really started to take off after Christmas. “It’s great to see each job through from start to finish, knowing that I have created exactly what the client wanted. I love the fact that I could be

Every job is different and unique - although I do have favourite dishes that I may suggest: stuffed poached salmon, coq au vin, fragrant Thai curries, tarte tatin, lemon tart and crème brulee”. Steve trained at the River Café in his early 30s, and went on to work for Bruce Poole (at Chez Bruce) and Bruno Loubet before heading the kitchen at Villandry for 8 years. He then moved on to Chelsea Arts Club where he was head chef. His meticulous eye for detail and experience can be seen in the
exquisite and stunning food he creates. You can put your faith in Steve to deliver exceptional food creations suited to you, because before taking on any new job, he liaises closely with you to establish the type of food you enjoy, the occasion, and the budget. Steve ‘preps’ in his kitchen in Kingston upon Thames, then the meal is finished and served in your home. Steve can deliver meals for you to serve if preferred. For more prestigious events, he can bring a butler and recommend a wine consultant to advise on what to pair with the meal. You won’t have to lift a finger! Last month he prepared dinner for 8 in a client’s
shows no signs of stopping. For a client in Belgravia having an al fresco roof terrace buffet he made prosciutto, figs and mozzarella, a fish stew made with razor clams, monk fish, mussels and crevettes in a spicy saffron tomato sauce - made with a home-made fish stock of course! - with fennel and potatoes and served with home- made aioli. What came after included baked aubergines with pomegranate seeds, piedmontese peppers, mixed berry tart and chocolate roulade. If you want a dinner party executed with class, style and beautiful food, then Steve is your man. You’ll be the talk of the dinner party scene with these unusual offerings and everyone will want to dine with you.

Coaching Inn Style
The Olde Bell The Olde Bell translates the traditional pleasures of the coaching inn for modern travellers
R
eputed to be the oldest inn in England, The Olde Bell offers locally sourced fare and stylish lodgings so that guests and patrons can rediscover the pleasures of the traditional inn. The first in the family of Dhillon Group’s stylish modern coaching establishments, The Olde Bell functions as a village in itself, combining great service, thoughtful design, robust food, relaxed surroundings and rambling meadow gardens. With parts of the original building dating back to 1135, the inn creeks with heritage and history, palpable today in the black wooden beams, inglenook fireplaces and crooked, sloping oak floorboards. Loved by Hollywood royalty and political icons, Mae West, Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Errol Flynn were among the many guests who stayed at the inn, along with Winston Churchill and former US president, Dwight D Eisenhower. Nowadays Dustin Hoffman, Erdem Moralioglu and Grace Woodward are seen dining in the restaurant or relaxing by the roaring fire. While many historical features of the inn remain unchanged, Isle Crawford adopted the restrained-chic aesthetic that she used to revitalise Babington House. Much of the furniture, tableware and textiles were specially commissioned pieces by local suppliers such as Ercol in nearby High Wycombe. The inn bar, ideal for fireside banter, serves local ales, ploughman’s lunches and hearty, nostalgic dishes. The bar comprises chunky tables, low beams and a local, homely feel prevails. Heart and Hearth
The dining room continues the love affair with the traditional inn concept as ‘warm, affordable and connected to good food’ (Ilse Crawford). The design elements take their inspiration from local history and suppliers. An antler chandelier provides the centrepiece to a dining space furnished with locally produced birch Windsor chairs, accessorised with sheepskin throws. Tactility and historical touches are key elements, the settles are detailed with geometric. Welsh woollen blankets while the walls whisper with references to local legends and folklore; plates printed with vintage images and woodcuts line the walls while literal historical touches such as ceramic pie birds remain. 60 n o v e m b e r 2 0 1 1

The main restaurant opens out towards a vast, meadow-style garden, making it an ideal spot for alfresco summer dining, complete with an outdoor summer kitchen. Meanwhile, The Olde Bell’s seasonally inspired menu of traditional and modern British classics is the culinary brainchild of The Olde Bell’s distinguished kitchen triumvirate, executive chef and author, Warren Geraghty, head chef, Andrew West-Letford and pastry chef, Jason Farr. The inn has earned itself a reputation as a foodie retreat with menus that are in keeping with the inn’s essential character, inventive and unfussy. Local suppliers are used for fish and meat and all bread is baked fresh on the premises. In line with his passion for wild food and foraging, Warren has implemented plans to maximise The Olde Bell’s commitment to local produce and nature dictated dining. Since summer 2011, guests and diners have been sampling dishes containing the freshest, home grown ingredients, courtesy of the inn’s very own ‘Kitchen Garden’ and head gardener Mandy Hill. Simplicity with Modern Flourishes
While the design emphasis is on the communal spaces, rooms are spread between the main inn and a collection of barns and outbuildings. The bedrooms mix the old with the new, retaining the simple, pared back feel to the communal areas. Comfortable modern beds covered with woven wool Welsh blankets sit atop traditional reed rugs. Additional room features include a rustic oak trestle, an Anglepoise lamp and a chair upholstered in Windsor suiting. Bathrooms are fitted with drench showers in the doubles and elegant roll top baths (as well as showers) in the suites. Inn the village
Connected by a ramble of traditional and modern buildings, The Olde Bell’s village-like feel has made it a popular venue for weddings and special occasions. The Tithe Barn and Malt House are licensed to hold civil ceremonies. Meanwhile, the Malt House is available for exclusive hire for very special occasions and includes a dining room and bar, music room complete with grand piano, private garden and personal chef. Among the The Olde Bell’s many unique selling points is its close, 40 minute proximity to London. Meanwhile, Heathrow airport is a mere 15 minute drive making it the ideal resting point for jaded, weary travellers. Located in a genteel, Thames-side village in Berkshire, Hurley itself boasts countless attractions, among them a picturesque, riverside walk and the historic towns of Henley and Marlow. Many rambling trails and nearby outdoor pursuits will satisfy those with a yearning to explore the British countryside at its best. The inn supplies bicycles and picnics upon request that are ideal for guests who wish to take a more strenuous route to exploring the local countryside, stately homes and nearby attractions. On the Web
The Olde Bell’s recently launched website is the perfect tool to whet your appetite before visiting The Olde Bell. Using illustrations drawn by legun, the site perfectly depicts the history, myth and intrigue which surrounds this ancient hostelry. Combining present day photos with a collection of half man – half beast portraits, food news and a blog, the website gives an insight into the coaching inn’s past, present and future. www.theoldebell.co.uk Enjoy three courses off the a la carte menu for £29.50 in The Olde Bell’s restaurant and stay in a Main Inn, Malt House Smaller Bedroom from £130. A history of
f
ET OXFORD STRE
or 500 years up until the late 18th century, Oxford Street was known as Tyburn Road, a name that struck fear into the hearts of condemned prisoners. It became notorious as the route taken by prisoners on their final journey from Newgate Prison to the gallows at Tyburn near Marble Arch. By 1729, the road had become known as Oxford Street. In the late 18th century, many of the surrounding fields were purchased by the Earl of Oxford, and the area was developed. It became popular with entertainers, and for entertainment buildings such as the Pantheon. During the 19th century, the area became known for its shops. Grand emporiums made their appearance in the 1890s and the opening of four stations on the street in 1900 allowed customers to come from further afield. In 1902 the Bourne and Hollingsworth moved in, and in 1909 Selfridge opened Britain’s first ‘democratic’ department store. The Blitz arrived with shocking effect. Oxford Street’s personal nemesis came 17-18 September 1940. Oxford Street was hit repeatedly. West End’s most prestigious department stores were ablaze, badly damaged or destroyed. It`s hard to imagine that Oxford Street, which today lies at the heart of London`s West End shopping area, was lined with tiny single shops such as booksellers, shoemakers and goldsmiths. Some of the most well-known stores on Oxford Street, also have a history: SELFRIDGE & CO.
Henry Gordon Selfridge was born in 1856 in Wisconsin, USA. Selfridge worked in Field & Leiter, Chicago’s leading department store. In 1903, Henry Selfridge left to establish his own retail empire. He set his sights 64 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 1

on the largest, richest city in the world - London. Aimed at thrifty housewives, the Bargain Basement opened in 1911. To celebrate the store’s 16th birthday in 1925, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird demonstrated history in the making by showing his televisor. “Television is here,” Selfridge said when he launched the store’s inter-active studio in 1939. “You can’t ignore it.” At the outbreak of war, women stepped up. They cleaned windows, drove delivery vans, operated the lifts - and even stoked the store’s huge boilers. The store survived, although the Blitz destroyed the famous roof gardens, which never re-opened to the public again. Newly-affluent Fifties families craved big consumer goods. Men wanted cars. Women wanted refrigerators and washing machines - while families wanted a television set, and in 1953 when the Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation was to be televised, sales surged. In 1969, the store celebrated its Diamond Jubilee. Building development started, including the Selfridge Hotel, which opened in 1972. By the 1980s, when fashion on the box was about big hair, big shoulders, and big budgets, Selfridges became the first British department store to advertise on television. In 1992, Sears Holdings created a £94 million re-development programme, and the yellow carrier bags - now a symbol of Selfridges - were put in place. JOHN LEWIS
In 1864, John Lewis opens on Oxford Street, taking 16s 4d on his first day, selling ribbons, haberdashery and linens. Over the next 20 years, the shop grew, so did the range of goods sold. John Lewis was also an outfitter, upholsterer, furrier, a dealer in china, glass, cutlery, plate and ironmongery and an importer of
oriental fabrics. The small shop had become a department store. After inheriting the Oxford Street shop in 1926, John Lewis’ son Speedan Lewis established a Trust for the benefit of the workers. The John Lewis Partnership was born. Spedan Lewis extended the Oxford Street premises yet again & took over a property on the other side of Holles Street and connected it to the existing building by an underground tunnel. During the 1930s, the shop continued to flourish, but on Wednesday 18th September 1940, an oil bomb fell. Despite the considerable damage, part of the shop re-opened for business within three weeks. However it was not until 1954 that it was decided to consolidate the premises onto one site. On 17 October 1960, the new John Lewis Oxford Street opened. Multi-million pound refurbishments have taken place since.
to 12,200 sq ft. By 1955, Marble Arch store was at the centre of the M&S mail order service, reminiscent of online shopping today. A new food hall was opened at Marble Arch in 1965. In March 1971 brand new tills were installed ready for the switch over to decimal currency. Throughout the years, Marble Arch has had a number of high profile visitors. One of the first visitors was Queen Mary, who visited the store on 18th March 1932. It is said that she purchased six handbags, three books, a rug, a baby doll, a 21 piece tea set and a willow pattern teapot. Other glamorous customers have included Prince Rainier of Monaco and his wife Grace Kelly in 1959, the Bolshoi Ballet and Portuguese football legend Eusebio who purchased a sweater from Marble Arch in 1962.
MARKS & SPENCER
On 21st July 1921, Sir Edward Elgar officially opened a new record store in Oxford Street. HMV’s new store was the first to catch the demand for recorded music. Nipper made his first appearance on an advertising supplement in 1900. In the following years, the dog and trumpet painting was used on all promotional items. By 1910 the words ‘His Master’s Voice’ were a trademark to be used as the name of a record label and the company’s first shop. In the 1920’s & 1930’s HMV in Oxford Street became one of London’s landmark stores, selling only HMV goods including records of such styles as Jazz, Swing and Dance Band music. In 1939 it was hit by World War II, stocking ‘forces sweethearts’ records, at the same time designated an official air-raid shelter. Cliff Richard used HMV’s Oxford Street recording studio to cut a demo disc, which eventually helps him secure a contract with EMI. A rock ‘n’ roll explosion was confirmed at the store on 8th February 1962. The store’s manager knew a Liverpool entrepreneur called Brian Epstein who visited HMV with a demo tape. Epstein had been trying to get a deal for his band The Beatles, - but had been rejected by Decca and EMI; he needed more discs in his search for a contract. HMV’s disc cutter, Jim Foy, was impressed and called EMI’s small Parlophone label - George Martin. A meeting was arranged and in June 1962, The Beatles - freshly signed to Parlophone - arrived at EMI’s famous Abbey Road studios to record a new single ‘Please Please Me’. The Sixties’ revolution in pop music was about to begin. HMV adopted the Oxford Street store as its role model, and in October 1986, and again in April 2000 saw openings of HMV’s new flagship stores on Oxford Street.
Marble Arch opened on 5th November 1930. The opening special was a tin kettle for the price of 6d in two styles. The first week’s takings were £4,568 9s 6d. In the mid 1930s, Marble Arch store was one of the first stores to have a Café Bar, where customers could order from popular menus joints, chops, steaks or fish and chips. During the World War II, the Café Bar took over the entire basement floor. By the end of the 1950’s the basement was enlarged

JAMES SMITH & SONS UMBRELLA SHOP
In 1830 James Smith founded the famous firm of James Smith and Sons at Foubert Place in London’s West End. His son, also called James, was quite an entrepreneur and moved the business to New Oxford Street in 1857, also opening six other businesses including a hatters and a barbershop. For a long time the company specialised in making ceremonial umbrellas, maces, and gentlemen’s canes and these are in service around the world. Until the 1920’s the cane or stick was an essential part of the well dressed male’s attire. During World War I many hundreds of thousands of military ‘swagger sticks’ were sold to soldiers, but today the cane or stick is used mostly as an aid to walking. Apart from being the leading umbrella company for 180 years and the first name in sticks and canes, the shop on New Oxford Street is a legend in itself. It is a perfect example of Victorian shop front design and has remained virtually unaltered in 140 years. Inside, it is a unique experience; tradition is still maintained with their workshops situated in the basement making umbrellas and walking sticks on the premises. NOVEMBER 2 0 1 1

OF THE HISTORY
HARRODS
C
harles Henry Harrod, born 1799, first started trading as a grocer and tea merchant in Cable Street, Stepney, East London. In 1849, The Harrods legend was born. Charles Henry Harrod took an active role in running a small grocer’s shop at 8 Middle Queen’s Buildings (later 105 Brompton Road). Two assistants were employed from 8am-9pm, six days a week. In 1851, The Great Exhibition was held in nearby Hyde Park. Knightsbridge gained social cachet as a result and became increasingly prosperous as a residential area. With this in mind, in 1861, Charles Digby Harrod, Charles Henry’s son, buys the store from his father and by 1868, turnover has increased to £1,000 per week, from just £20 in 1853. In 1879 Charles Digby Harrod acquired two adjoining buildings at 101 and 103 Brompton Road. He adds a van delivery service and new products such as medicines, perfumes, stationery and china. He renames his shop ‘Harrod’s Stores’. In 1880, one hundred staff are employed from 7am to 8pm, six days a week. But disaster strikes in 1883... the store is fully stocked for Christmas when a fire breaks out on 6th December, completely destroying all buildings and stock. In spite of this, all deliveries are made on time and Christmas trade beats all previous records. In 1884, a new purpose-built store, designed by Alfred Williams, assistant district surveyor of Kensington, rises from the ashes... and in 1885 Harrods breaks its ‘no credit’ rule and personal accounts are opened. Among the first account customers are Oscar Wilde, Lillie Langtry and Ellen Terry. 1889 saw C.D. Harrod retire and Harrods floated on the stock exchange as Harrod’s Stores Limited, a limited liability company. In 1890 Richard Burbidge is appointed General Manager.

London history
Under his stewardship Harrods flourishes, working hours are reduced, new departments are added and the store issues its first ever illustrated catalogue. Over the next 21 years, neighbouring premises are acquired until Harrods occupies the island site. During 1894, The Fur Salon, Restaurant, Hairdressing Salon, Photography, the Harrods Bank, the Estate Agency and the Piano Department are among new additions to the store. It is also the year of the first January ‘winter clearance’ sale. 1898 saw Britain’s first escalator or ‘moving staircase’ installed, to the amazement of the public. Attendants were stationed at the top of the escalator ready to offernervous customers smelling salts or a tot of brandy! The store, as it appears today, started to take shape in 1901 as construction of the famous Brompton Road terracotta façade, designed by C.W. Stephens, began. New fashion salons on the first floor were furnished with unprecedented luxury. The floors above occupied by residential flats. The Meat Hall is built during 1902-3. Its distinctive tile decoration designed by renowned arts and crafts ceramic sculptor W.J. Neatby, is still in place today. The first Harrods green clad doormen were employed in 1909. They became known as the Green Men. 1911 saw construction of the Harrods building near completion with the opening of the spacious Georgian Restaurant, the largest and grandest restaurant of its time, to commemorate the coronation of King George V. During World War I, Harrods gave its full support to the war effort. The shortage of male staff meant that Harrods Green Men were replaced by Green Women. Female dispatch drivers and a female lift operators were employed for the first time. In 1920 Harrods factories were established at nearby locations in Trevor Square, Pentagon Place and Draycott Avenue housing workshops for tailoring, cabinet making, upholstery, bootmaking, silverwork, baking and chocolate making. 1921... The most famous bear in the world,Winniethe-Pooh, was bought at Harrods by author A.A. Milne for his son, Christopher Robin. In 1930, a new ‘Man’s Shop’ on the Ground Floor is devoted entirely to the store’s male clientele, specialising in fashion and accessories. During World War II some areas of the store are taken over for military use. Outside of trading hours, parachutes and aircraft parts are all manufactured on the premises and the Royal Canadian Air Force is given a base in the store. The store narrowly escapes serious damage when a flying bomb completely destroys the Estates Office and neighbouring pub on the opposite side of Brompton Road. Harrods celebrates its Centenary Year in 1949. In just 100 years, it had grown into a £20 million a year success story. To mark the occasion, a fullscale model of the original Victorian grocer’s shop was erected in the Exhibition Hall. As commercial television went on air in Britain for the first time in 1955, Harrods was one of the first to advertise in the new medium. In 1959 Harrods Limited was taken over by the Scottish company, House of Fraser. Capturing the ‘Swinging Sixties’ Way In, a boutique for younger customers, opened in 1967, followed by in 1971 a spectacular new cosmetics department, known as the White Hall, on the Ground Floor. It is followed by a new perfume hall, opened in 1986, known as the Black Hall.
In more recent times, in 1982, The Food Halls were increased in size to seven halls, and in 1985 The House of Fraser Group acquired by the Fayed family and Harrods became a family owned firm once again. Mohamed Al Fayed, the new Chairman of Harrods, initiated a refurbishment plan which cost approximately £400 million. The first celebrity Sale opening took place in 1988 as Hollywood legend Charlton Heston became the first in a long

The Fifth Floor also opens - a vast area devoted entirely to sporting goods. Celebrations for Harrods 150th anniversary got underway on Valentine’s Day in 1999 with a spectacular fireworks display and the launch of harrods.com And from 2002 the store re-development continued with a £6million refurbishment of the Hair & Beauty department, now renamed Urban Retreat. The Valentina Story F
ounded in 1991, Valentina is an Italian family owned and run small chain of delicatessen/ restaurants. Named after the daughter of one of the founding families, their stores provide the best store cupboard essentials and Italian regional specialities. Food and wine has always been their passion. The Zoccolas and the Arcaris, cousins through 70 n o v e m b e r 2 0 1 1
marriage, came from a small village called Saint Elia Fumirapido. It is located near Monte Cassino, a rocky hill about 130 km (80 miles) southeast of Rome. After the Second World War, some of the family moved to the UK, opening food businesses in Scotland and London, before joining forces to launch Valentina. Food and farming has
been their way of life for generations, and even today, they return home annually to help with our own label olive oil harvest, as well as selecting the finest ingredients for our own label antipasti, pasta and sauces. 2011 marks Valentina’s 20th anniversary and coincides with the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. To celebrate, note only have they
launched additions to their own label range (currently at over 110 items), but have also opened their newest store in Notting Hill. Every Valentina serves recipe dishes that use seasonal ingredients, packed full of hearty flavour: These have been handed down from their own families for generations. Valentina look forward to welcoming you very soon.

CHRISTMAS AT VALENTINA The festive season is a magical time of year when some of our favourite specialities come into season, such as white truffles, wild boar salami, mostarda di fruta and marron glace - Italian Christmas food is as varied as it gets. Every region, every province, every village has its own specialities for both Cena della Vigilia (Christmas Eve dinner) and Pranzo di Natale (Christmas lunch). A lifetime would not be enough to try all the regional Christmas food worth savouring, but here at Valentina, we’ve put together a taster of some of the things you can find in store and online:
Valentina honey & jam from £7.95
Valentina antipasti from £5.95
Store Cupboard Essentials For those moments when you have unexpected visitors, or simply need to put together a quick and tasty meal in minutes, the Valentina own label range harks back to our pastoral roots, with most of the collection carefully sourced from the fertile lands around Southern Italy. Olive oil, for example, is from our family’s own olive groves in Saint Elia.
Valentina spray oils from £8.95
Hampers from £25
Panettone & Pandoro During the Christmas season, these are the two most popular yeast cakes served. Originally, Panettone, the dome shaped cake made with butter, eggs, raisins and candied peel was invented and produced in Milan, while Pandoro was baked in a special star shaped mould & dusted with powdered sugar and came from Verona. Traditionally Italians eat panettone at breakfast with coffee, between meals with Marsala wine, and after dinner with spumante. Pandoro is more often sliced and served with a sauce. Both are an ideal treat for Christmas.

hat do you do if you really want something special and just can’t find it? When all you yearn for is just the best of its kind in the world - and no-one seems to have produced it; at least not to the standard you desire? If you are Roy and Tracey Jones you initially scour the earth for a key ingredient and, when you have finally tracked it down, you create what you were looking for in the first place - the world’s finest luxury chocolate experience. “I wanted to buy a very special present for a very special person on a very special day - her 40th birthday,” explains Tracey. “Like me she is a chocoholic! I went to the top-end departments stores and even some of the little luxury chocolate boutiques but just could not find what I wanted. There is a lot of nice chocolate about, of course, but, I don’t know, there was always something missing. It was very frustrating and in the end I bought her something else entirely.”That was the beginning but by no means the end of a two year journey which has reached a triumphant conclusion with the launch of ‘the Chocolate’ Roy and Tracey’s new business dedicated to producing ‘the best luxury chocolate experience in the world.’
What is it?
In its simplest form we are talking about an amazing ‘experience’. Handmade truffles using an award winning, secret recipe Italian chocolate, filled with champagne, flaked with edible 24-carat gold all enclosed within a bespoke handcrafted boutique box encrusted with more than 450 Swarovski Crystals inside and out. Also made by hand no two of these boxes will ever be the same. The chocolate itself is 63% Toscano Black sourced from a tiny artisan chocolate maker based just outside historic Pisa. The cocoa beans are refined using a traditional granite stone mill and the result has been judged by the Academy of Chocolate as officially the best in the world. What experts call the ganache - basically the mixture of cocoa, cream and a variety of other ingredients to form 74 n o v e m b e r 2 0 1 1
what consumers think of as, well, the chocolate - that forms ‘the Chocolate’ is a closely guarded secret but Roy and Tracey are happy to confirm that there are several glasses of champagne added to the normal recipe. “As we make everything ourselves we can, of course, produce ‘the Chocolate’ without alcohol if required,” commented Tracey. You Eat the Gold?
It’s the world’s most expensive foodstuff and has been eaten for millennia. Although the Ancient Egyptians believed it gave them immortality no such claims are made for ‘the Chocolate.’ (yet). However other authorities do claim that gold has many attributes when eaten, including generating a higher IQ, managing rheumatoid arthritis, developing mystic power and contributing to a long and healthy life. More seriously it is authorised for use in food products in both Europe and the USA. High quality chocolate also has its enthusiasts. They claim that chocolate with over 60% cocoa content (‘the Chocolate’ has 63%) reduces blood pressure, decreases the chance of both diabetes and heart attack, improves the memory and even eases a persistent cough amongst a plethora of other attributes. Be that as it may the fact remains that ‘the Chocolate’ has a fantastic taste that will exceed the expectations of the wildest choccie enthusiast. And the memory of the experience will last and last. The Products:
Available online at the-chocolate.com and exclusively at Harrods, the Boutique Box contains 15 chocolates minimum and a weight of 200 grammes. It retails at £190 including postage and packing. Delivery of this unique hand-made product is within five days or can be expressed for specific delivery date. Specially selected quality crystals uplift and provide energy, while the process of delicate stitching and hand embroidery is done with detail, energy, joy and fine work ethics, embodying each piece with a special feeling and radiance. For the current Fall Winter season, the ‘Colours of I’ collection is based on colour therapy and the use of gemstones in affiliation with the rainbow & chakra system, setting stones such as

Each piece is not only a garment but a happening. The acclaimed Angels & Seraphims collection, which shall be arriving in early 2012 in time for Spring, embodies flowing drapes and “Angelic capes” across its range of chiffon dresses and silk gowns that touch upon the heavenly realms. With several global studios catering to bespoke clientele and a limited number of independent stores, Zaeem decided to open his flagship London store this Autumn in the Fulham & Chelsea area, across the river from his home in Wimbledon Village. His eagerly anticipated Hollywood store is due to open in Los Angeles at the end of November. Zaeem Jamal, Founder and Creative Director, says, “We recognize the demands on time and energy that life puts on us, especially our clients in the public eye, and so our goal is to create fashion that gives a much needed lift in order to enable women to shine from the inside, out. We want to inspire women to be creative and enlightened with their style, looking at both external glamour and internal beauty, and we hope to awaken their relationship to each piece as a reflection of an aspect of their core being, and an opportunity to shine. r Ariel Haus is one of London’s leading dermatolgists and recently partnered with Comfort Pure to conduct some research on skin sensitivity. Comfort Pure, which is specially formulated for those with sensitive skin, asked volunteers from British Naturism – as well as a group of people who like to keep their clothes on – about their skincare habits. Results showed that Naturists, who expose their bodies to the elements whatever the season, were found to be more aware of their skin’s needs. Nearly half (45%) apply sun protection every day, 82% examine their skin for any abnormalities on a regular basis and eight out of 10 naturists feel that wearing natural fibres such as cotton provide comfort for their skin. But we should all be aware of our skin and seeing a dermatologist regularly is vital to not only look your best but also to look for any changes in skin behaviour. As we head into party season Dr Haus continues to offer a selection of non-invasive treatments at his Harley Street clinic in London. Here is a list of treatments that clients benefit from to look their best in that party outfit: • Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and also to rejuvenate the skin • Treatments to address wrinkles and frown lines • Dermal fillers (bioplasty and Restylane SUBQ) to smooth out deeper wrinkles and lines • Skin treatments, rejuvenation and hair removal using eMax laser • Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with Velashape, the latest technology to achieve non-surgical liposuction • Carboxytherapy to remove dark under eye bags Dr. Haus only uses noninvasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant

regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States. Dr. Haus is always happy to share his knowledge and experience with his patients, to understand the concerns they have about their skin and agree on the treatment or procedure that will best suit their specific circumstances. “The findings show that, on
average, naturists tend to be more aware of skin sensitivity and how to protect against this. When skin is exposed to the elements it is exfoliated naturally, helping to preserve its natural oils while leaving it clear. For those who prefer a more modest approach to life, it is best to make sure clothes are as soft as possible against your skin to keep it in good condition. I would recommend using a fabric softener such as
Comfort Pure, the only fabric conditioner whose research is recognised by the British Skin Foundation, to help maintain healthy skin,” says Dr. Haus. Furthermore Dr Haus adds; “I always recommend patients to see a dermatologist at least every other monthsomething that is on the increase in the UK, In Brazil people tend to visit their dermatologists more often.” www.drhausdermatology.com

london’s BOTOX queen
here is an increasing trend for both men and women to seen non-surgical, non-invasive methods for achieving a younger look. There are various options available that fall into this category, including wrinkle relaxing injections such as Botox®, dermal fillers and skin peels, to name just a few. Erika Moore recently visited Sister Kay Greveson at her clinic in Hampstead after becoming increasingly frustrated by her lines and wrinkles. Here she outlines her experience. I work in a job that involves dealing with clients on a daily basis, so my appearance is important. I was increasingly aware of the lines on my forehead and between my eyes. I always felt as though I looked angry, and older than I was, even though I am only in my early 30’s. I approached Sister Kay Greveson her clinic within Aquarius Spa, Hampstead, about two months ago as I had been recommended to her by a friend. I was initially nervous as I have never had any sort of treatment like that before. I was worried about having the injections and what I would look like afterwards but Kay put my mind at ease immediately. We had a detailed chat about what results I wanted from the treatment; she took a medical history and some photographs. Kay explained that Botox® is a safe, naturally occurring protein that works by blocking nerve

She gave me the option of using a ‘numbing’ local anaesthetic cream, which I took. Despite being nervous, I did not find the procedure bad at all. Kay talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable throughout. She was very gentle and I hardly felt the injections; it certainly wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. She explained that
it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance. I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

Can teeth whitening damage teeth? No. Teeth whitening is a safe and effective technique that is scientifically proven. The treatment involves the use of custom fitting whitening trays and a very small amount of whitening gel (carbamide peroxide). You need to apply the gel to teeth for 1-2 hours a day for 2-3 weeks. The whitening occurs via an oxygenation process within the structure of teeth. Problems can occur if you have ill fitting trays or if you use certain ‘over the counter’ whitening products. For the best advice and your total safety, it is always best to have professional teeth whitening with the dentist.

Tracey Smyth The Art Of
Semi Permanent Make-Up
w
Tracey Smyth is the semi permanent make-up expert everyone is talking about!
ith 25 years experience, she is the semi-permanent make-up genius who changes the lives of celebrities by revitalising and enhancing their look. Together with her team of specialists and revolutionary treatments, Tracey devises a complete treatment plan to get that youthful and natural look you are hoping for. Semi-permanent makeup can change your life! Want to change your look, freshen up, look well rested and ultimately look younger? With an arch of the brow your look will be transformed from dated to on-trend and open eyed therefore giving the impression of fresh faced youthfulness. It’s time for a brow re-model. “Semi-permanent make-up has taken a complete turn, gone are the days of the half moon shape slapped above the eye, we have so many different types of fantastic and natural looking ways to enhance your eyebrow shape from fine hair line strokes to simply filling in patchy eyebrows with a shadow effect. I can create a totally realistic and natural arched brow for both men and women!” As you get older the shape of your face changes and it is very important to move with the times, it’s amazing how many women still over pluck their eyebrows into the shape they had in the nineties or even eighties. The area becomes over traumatised therefore making it impossible to achieve that full lush look you had in your 20’s. As the brows are such

it’s amazing how many women still over pluck their eyebrows into the shape they had in the nineties or even eighties an important part of the total impression of your look it is only smart to seek advice from a specialist in this area. on more mature lips and anyone who has thin lips and would like a fuller sexy looking lip. As you get older the pigment of the lips fades, with this procedure that youthful blush is restored. The colour of your lip is matched to your complexion and the results are lip transforming! It sounds a little uncomfortable as the entire lip is tattooed, however my specialist Dr Harris applies a dental block so you will be totally pain free. The common question and fear my clients have is “will I get the trout pout?” My answer is emphatically no, no and no again. I concentrate on bringing out your own natural attractiveness and inner beauty, I do not (unless the client is a celebrity and trying to achieve a different look) believe in enforcing an over exaggerated look. I like my clients to achieve an improved and youthful look which is natural and complements their character and lifestyle. Well this should give you plenty to think about, feel like a change and know you need an overhaul. Make a booking today. Until next month, stay well and get ready for the summer! SWIM AT HOME EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR AN ORIGIN POOL. IT'S A FAMILY THING...
O
rigin has been in the business of constructing indoor and outdoor swimming pools for over thirty years. In that time they have progressed from simple timber buildings to the impressive architect design schemes of today. To celebrate this anniversary Origin has commissioned a total redesign of their visual identity. This includes a bright new logo, excitingly updated publicity material and van fleet, and an interactive user-friendly website. To accompany this flurry of activity the company has produced an all new colour brochure, showing as never before the breadth of Origin's capability. Covering all the styles that this unique British company has become known for, from classic original styles to custom designed extensions that are a true product of yours and Origin's combined thinking, the brochure is economical with words, letting the beautiful pictures tell the story. Origin has also committed to an occasional newsletter, NewsWave, to announce the latest and greatest improvements the company has been working ?

on, and of course show the pick of the recent triumphs. Add a monthly emailing, Origin eNews, and the new publicity thrust is complete ready to take on the next thirty years! But the caring attention to detail, the meticulous, design work and the insistence of only using the finest materials available hasn't changed. The company still handles every element of the process, without bringing in any outside experts whatsoever. From the first meeting, to the sketch ideas produced as a result, to the architectural drawings and finished visuals, to the guidance through the planning process, to the earthworks, the building and completing. Origin takes the process from beginning to end -
and all you have to do is jump into the state-of-the-art heated pool at the end of it all. Origin has become Britain's longest established, best known pool company because they have accepted every challenge, crossed every hurdle, and with great experience and ingenuity created a product that is considered second to none, by customers and the pool industry alike. The architects and designers are seasoned players in their fields, and bring a wealth of experience to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Even the teams who build the final pool houses are eminently professional, many having been involved since the very early days of the company. Building an indoor pool house is a complex business, so many of Origin's buildings are based on the company's established styles. For example,
The Panorama has a light, airy construction with a bright hipped glazed lantern roof – and is built from solid timber with an optional brick or rendered facing, to co-ordinate with the style of your home. The Barn has all the appearance and appeal of a country barn conversion, but built to state-of-the-art standards to be the home for a superb heated pool. The Sirius has exceptional designer looks and a wide expanse of glass bringing a real indoor/outdoor feel to your swimming. These established style-inspired pool houses come in a wide range of standard sizes, and the heated pool will be in a style of your choice. Origin is recognised as the foremost designers of one-o buildings and extensions, designed and developed to co-ordinate with their surroundings perfectly. Materials and finishes are carefully matched with the existing structure – so the finished result is a handsome extension to the property, hiding a luxurious heated pool. To do full justice to Origin's expertise they include outdoor pools as part of their remit. The company is famous for creating pool houses, but they are all too aware that many people prefer to swim in the sun (or under the stars) and an outdoor pool can be one of the most aspirational features a home can have. The level of skill and understanding of pool technology has helped Origin to become one of the country's foremost outdoor pool providers. Origin's new logo has a strapline "The original indoor & outdoor pool company." Get in touch, and find out just why the original is usually the best. Origin Leisure Harefield Middlesex UB9 6TH Telephone 01895 823366 or email info@originleisure.com for the new brochure, or to be included in future distribution of NewsWave and Origin eNews. And check out the all new website: www.originleisure.com

Now you can enjoy the magic of keeping fish, without lots of work... The truth about filters
Many traditional aquariums have a filter on the side or at the top, but guess what - fish waste sinks. All biOrbs have a filter at the bottom of the aquarium. Put simply, the filter works where there is most to filter. We’ve even made it easy to change. It takes seconds and you only need to do it every four to six weeks.
Slim built-in lighting
It’s so slim you’d be forgiven for not noticing it was there. The LED light is neatly built-in to the lid. The LED’s themselves are bright, low voltage and long lasting.
Everything you’ll need, in one box When you buy a biOrb you’ll get everything you need
to start your aquarium. You won’t need to go shopping for any additional parts and you’ll get full instructions to help you on your way. Just add water and fish. arlier this year the Government announced their first comprehensive review of the Feed-in tariffs for small-scale renewable electricity generation. On the 31st October 2011 they released their second comprehensive review which is considering various aspects of the scheme which include the tariff rates. Solar PV is still a great investment at the new rate of 21p per kWh. It will give you an average return of 8% to 10% which is still more than any ISA or building society would offer you today. There have been extensive price reductions in the last 6 months for a solar PV system which enables you to receive great returns on investment. From the 1st April 2012 any individual wanting to install a solar PV system will also require an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to which they must

achieve a minimum of band C energy rating to receive the 21p per kWh tariff. Any properties below band C will need to be brought up to band C by installing energy efficiency measures outlined in the EPC recommendations to be eligible for the high tariff. Any property below band C after the 1st April 2012 will only receive 9p per kWh until energy efficiency measures are implemented. Bringing the
big
h
ome cinemas, also commonly called home theatre, are home entertainment set-ups that will reproduce the cinema going experience and mood with the help of video and audio equipment in the comfort of your own home. Those of us that are old enough to remember the 1950’s, playing home movies became popular with Kodak 8 mm film projection equipment becoming available, although mainly to the most affluent of people. Today is a different story, with the advancement of High Definition television and digital sound processing produced from Sky TV, Cable and Blu-Ray DVD players you really can bring the big screen home. Flat screen TV’s have revolutionised the way we watch and enjoy television today, our living rooms have been transformed as you no longer need the big tube TV taking pride of place in the corner of the lounge as there was nowhere else it could go. You can now wall mount them anywhere in the room for optimal viewing pleasure, you can even disguise the TV’s as a Mirror or frame painting at a touch of a button the TV will be revealed. Very James Bond. To really catch the emotion of a film, live concert or a sports event, with surround sound it’s time for that upgrade. Projector systems have come a long way too, from a electric drop down screen in the lounge to a 120”+ Cine Wide SMX acoustically transparent projector screen in your newly constructed basement. The picture quality can exceed that of a commercial cinema and the sound from Dolby Tru HD or DTS HD at such close quarters can immerse you so much that you believe you are actually there; we can thank Mr. Lucas and Mr. Spielberg for this. The next step forward now is 3D projection with active or passive glasses. A company based in Italy called Sim2 who have pioneered new technology over the years have just launched a new projector called the Lumis 3Ds, the brightness and colours produced from this are truly amazing and breathtaking for such a small machine.

Gaming from Sony’s PS3 or Microsoft’s X-box and the Nintendo Wii bring on a new dimension in 3D, you could really be racing alongside Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button in the latest addition of F1, or playing the 18th Hole with Tiger Woods. Media servers like the Imerge MS1 HD 3D that copy your movies to a protected storage system, allowing for large movie and music collections to be stored and accessed at a touch of a button from your ipad or other universal remote control. Home cinema seating from Home Cinema Modules allow for bespoke custom built chairs with electric recliners and cup holders, which can be fixed together in any configuration possible for your room. Lighting control from Lutron can really make a difference to the way the cinema room looks, fibre optic ceiling lights that twinkle like the night sky, or bright LED’ s that light the way to the best seat in the house. Multi-Room home Automation systems from the latest IPAD control your whole house. From Crestron, AMX, Lutron controlled lighting and Savant. They are all playing a part in the digital revolution as we know it today. Putting aside all the technology behind Home Cinema is the fact that it really brings family and friends together to have fun, to enjoy a movie without interruption of mobile phones and the person with the big hair that always sits in front of you at your local cinema, It’s time to bring the BIG screen home. Pushing the
Boundaries
t
his month, we had the chance to speak to James Bernard, Owner and Director at ‘Plus Rooms’ to get an insight in to how, in such a competitive environment, he maintains to push the boundaries of conventional extension building and design. With a wide array of satisfied clients, jaw-dropping case studies and a design driven approach to domestic building work, James has placed ‘Plus Rooms’ at the very forefront of the London extension market. ‘Plus Rooms’ have been operating in the London for just over 9 years, in which time they have established themselves as one of the market leaders. The company was originally set up by James’ father in 2002, with James joining the business around 2 years later. However, James’ mother and father tragically died in a car accident last November which led to James and his brother Robert inheriting the family business. It quickly became apparent that whilst it was a huge responsibility, it was also a great opportunity to continue their father’s legacy and to steer the company in a new direction. “We wanted to maintain the great service and high quality product that our clients are accustomed to, but ultimately offer a design led service at a fixed price.” It is clear, that James lives and breathes building and design. After only 5 minutes of discussion he excitedly reels off images of various case studies, showing buildings that are almost unrecognizable and tailored specifically to his clients needs. The images are stunning, and in a rather unique way, each of the
builds has their own personality and a sense of function. It is this attention to detail, which is truly impressive. “We are determined to deliver extensions which are tailored to the individual client, rather than simply conforming to the local authority guidelines. We never have been and never will be a mass production company who move customers along a conveyor belt of obligatory extensions, we want each one of our projects to be unique and most importantly; outstanding”. James explains that the key to the success of his business is to understand what his clients want to achieve and then to make it accessible to them. After all, an extension serves a purpose, whether it is an investment in your property, catering for your families needs, or adding that ‘wow factor’ to your home. ‘Plus Rooms’ work with numerous professionals, including qualified architects, surveyors and planning consultants which makes them well equipped to deal with the obstacles that many building companies seek to avoid. James filled me in on how his service works and once it was broken down, it became very apparent why ‘Plus Rooms’ is gaining huge popularity within London. For the first time, James has made it possible for clients to use a fully fledged architectural firm for the design of their extension or conversion, without the exorbitant costs and with a clear view of the final outlay. “Generally speaking the only way to achieve something different or spectacular when it comes to building an extension is to enlist the services of an architect who will design the

extension and obtain all the relevant permissions on your behalf. This service comes at a considerably perpetuating cost in itself, with the actual build cost only being determined once the project is put out to tender, often leaving clients with a nasty surprise. Using our extensive portfolio of projects, and through a detailed consultation with perspective clients, we are able to create concepts and provide an accurate quotation for the building works before the client has spent a penny.” ‘Plus Rooms’ provide a service which allows clients to enjoy the benefits of an architectural firm and a building company working unison. Perhaps most importantly, the cost for the service and the build has already been agreed. As “Plus Rooms” undertake more than 100 projects in London every year, it means they are able to negotiate fixed fees with the architects that would otherwise be unattainable. When planning a build or conversion with ‘Plus Rooms’ they will first and foremost establish exactly what it is their client wants to achieve, they will then work with the client
to create a concept. The concept often tends to be derived through the amalgamation or development of previous designs which are presented to the client during the consultation. A ‘schedule of works’ is then created, providing the client with a transparent week by week breakdown of how the build will develop. The payments are taken on a weekly basis, and are only due once the tasks associated with each week have been completed, meaning the client is never paying for work in advance. It is exactly this forward thinking that has made ‘Plus Rooms’ in to what they are today. What is interesting, is that in speaking to James he shrugs off how revolutionary this type of service is, for him it simply enables him to do what his team do best – create extensions and builds to the best they can be. It is his passion for creating a fantastic end product which has organically created a new type of building company. After all, like building itself; if the foundations are sturdy and well planned, building something marvelous on top of it is the easy part. november2011

In this current market, how can I best renovate to invest in my home? Ultimately any extension to a property is an investment, as it adds something a bit extra to the price tag of the house. For me, the most lucrative investment in your property is a loft conversion, as adding additional bedrooms and bathrooms will always translate to added value. However, when the property market becomes saturated, as it is at the moment, a kitchen extension is the best way of transforming your living space and giving your property the edge needed to attract a buyer. The culture at home has changed significantly in recent years and for many the Kitchen has now become the main focal point of the house. A well thought out kitchen/living area to many home-buyers eyes is a priority and for me has to be the area of the house most heavily invested in if looking to prepare for a re-sell. I am already aware of the strict planning permission on my property, is there anything I can do? Planning guidelines in

London change from borough to borough and it is particularly important to look at these guidelines carefully when purchasing a property to invest. Having said that, even in areas which boast the strictest planning constraints there are ways to achieve excellent extensions through the combined use of permitted development and planning permission. Permitted development rights are set by the government and are available to most houses in the UK. By working closely with planning consultants and the local authority we are able to achieve designs which are
I know exactly what I want to achieve for my extension, how can I get a realistic tender for the build? The best thing to do is to arrange a consultation with a company like ours, and we will be able to provide an accurate cost for the work before you outlay any money on having plans prepared. We will also be able to advise whether what you want to achieve is likely to be permissible to the local authority. By working with a company like ‘Plus Rooms’ you can get a complete budget for your project prior to signing a contract and sleep sound in the knowledge that all the necessary requirements will be taken care of for you. What can you offer me to give my extension the extra ‘wow factor?’ There are a million different design features which we can incorporate into your extension which will set it apart from the norm. At ‘Plus Rooms’ we love to create the wow factor, if that is what our clients are after. Whether we are aiming to do something which is architecturally in keeping with the property or something contrasting and contemporary we always look to achieve something special. Generally speaking, the careful incorporation of frameless structural glazing in conjunction with clean lines is the easiest way to create a contemporary design. Subtle changes like concealing gutters and roof tiles can also help give the build a sleek and modern feel. Installing large sliding doors with slim profiles and creating a flush floor level from the kitchen to the garden tends to give the build a touch of class.

Exploring the benefits of
underfloor heating 106 n o v e m b e r 2 0 1 1
water temperature before it enters the underfloor heating system. There are forms of underfloor heating to fit every type of floor construction (screeds, fully floating timber floors, battened and joisted floors), as well as floor constructions that incorporate acoustic components required to comply with Part E of the Building Regulations. Screed
h
igh comfort levels, together with low running cost and environmental benefits, have resulted in a growing demand for underfloor heating systems. The UK market is currently growing at 20% per annum. Underfloor heating is the most comfortable form of heating because it is largely radiant, and people have evolved physiologically to prefer this form of heating. It is completely unobtrusive, and some people estimate that this gives an average of 15% more usable space in a room. It is completely safe and more hygienic than radiators. And it is more energy efficient. Radiant energy from the floor is absorbed by the other surfaces in a room, which warm up and become secondary radiant emitters. We become surrounded by gently radiating surfaces, which is very comfortable. There are no floor draughts and the temperature in all parts of the room is even. Convective forms of heating, such as radiators, use the air in a room as the transport mechanism to move energy into the whole room from a small surface that must be very hot compared with the room air. The hottest air is at ceiling level and the coldest is at floor level. The air can become dry and cause dry eyes and stuffy noses. Convection circulation can also pick up dust from the floor and put it into the air we breathe. Energy efficiency
Before the screed is laid, edge insulation should be set all round the periphery of the room to allow for thermal movement in the screed during the year. The heating pipe is fixed to the top of the insulation, just before the screed is laid. The pipe should generally be set at 200 mm spacing. This is close enough to guarantee best heating performance and minimises the length of pipe needed. The pipe can be stapled to firm insulation and fixed with screw clips to soft insulation. Another option is system plates. These vacuum-formed plastic panels have moulded pipe grippers to hold the pipe securely and at regular spacing. Timber floors (floating)
Panels of insulation are used to support a timber floor deck. This is normally formed from tongued-and-grooved panels of chipboard or plywood. Floating-floor panels with pre-cut pipe channels and factory-fitted aluminium heat diffusers are available to be used instead of plain insulation panels to support a fully floating deck. These purpose-build panels have a higher conductivity and help minimise downward heat loss. Timber battens, joists and I-beams
Battens are used where the floor loadings are to be higher than can be supported by a fully floating floor or where the floor deck is to be formed from planks to be nailed down to a support. Softwood joists are commonly used in intermediate floors, although manufactured I-beams are often used because they can be stronger and are more stable dimensionally. Prefabricated batten/joist panels are available from Wavin to fit between battens and automatically space these at nominal 400/600 mm centres or to be fitted between softwood joists. Underfloor heating is easy to install. The mechanism for fixing pipe or heating cable into the floor is simple. If it is planned to design and install a small area of underfloor heating, underfloor heating products available through merchants are easy to use. If the project is larger, it is better to seek the help of a professional underfloor heating supplier.
Most new buildings can be kept warm with heating power in the range 35 to 75W/m2, which can be achieved with floor-surface temperatures of just 24 to 27°C. The maximum floor temperature should not normally exceed 29°C, although up to 34°C is acceptable for bathrooms. An underfloor heating system uses water at a much lower temperature than that required by radiators, making it ideal to be fuelled by alternative energy sources such as solar or geothermal energy. Depending on the conductivity of the floor, the water needs to be between 40 and 60°C to reach the design floor temperature. By contrast, radiators generally require the water to be at 70 to 80°C. When designing an underfloor heating system to heat an entire building, some modern boilers can supply the water at the low temperature required directly to the heating system. The internal pump of such a boiler can be used to circulate the water around the pipe circuits. Floor types
If the boiler cannot supply the water at the required temperature, it is necessary to add a water-mixing control unit to reduce the november2011

NATURAL BEAUTY Expertly crafted and designed wood flooring from The Natural Wood Floor Company
F
ounded 20 years ago, The Natural Wood Floor Company is a family run business which has grown to become one of the leading wood flooring manufacturers and suppliers in Europe. Run by three brothers, this is quite an achievement for a company that began life in a shed of a house in Balham. Trading began in 1991 selling reclaimed flooring from demolished buildings in the capital. As the company’s reputation grew, the demand for their products increased. Quick to respond, the company soon moved into manufacturing,
opening up a state-of-theart manufacturing facility in Eastern Europe. Providing supreme craftsmanship and excellent customer service are key to the company’s success. The company’s UK base is located in Smugglers Way, Wandsworth. With over 20,000 square metres of timber in stock, covering 140 different types of flooring, the showroom offers a huge selection of wood flooring to suit a wide range of tastes and budgets. This includes an unrivalled selection of engineered, solid and parquet woodblock floors and an extensive choice of pre-finished designs. These come in a variety of different species including oak, maple and walnut along with more exotic species such as wenge and panga panga. With ecological issues high on their agenda, The Natural Wood Floor
Company operates with a strict environmental policy. All timber is sourced from government owned and managed forests, ensuring that wood is from a reputable supplier, originating from a sustainable source. The company also operates with a strict zero waste policy. The whole tree trunk is used in the manufacturing process with by-products such as sawdust being used to power the wood drying machines and heat the factory buildings. This commitment ensures that all of their products are produced with respect for, and in harmony with, the environment. The use of The Natural Wood Floor Company’s products in a number of prestigious properties is testament to their success. The Tate Modern, The Natural History Museum, Westfield London, Chelsea
Football Club and The British Library are just a few of the buildings where you can see the company’s floors. There are many advantages to buying directly from the manufacturer, including the price. The company offers big discounts on end of line products, with up to 40% off the normal price. Stock changes quickly, so it’s best to visit the showroom regularly, or keep an eye on their website for some great deals. London basements The only way is down
W
ith every square foot of floor space at a premium within London, basement construction has become the most popular form of home expansion. When you have either expanded to the limits of your property above ground, or have been refused planning for expansion above, a basement is the obvious solution. Maggie Smith of London Basement tells me that it is no longer a second choice for expanding homes, it has become the first choice for home owners and indeed for purchasers of new properties. It is the only way to gain such a large amount of space, indeed, a whole new floor level! London Basement is the original basement company, who have been building basements for over 15 years, who have to date built a remarkable 1000 basements. It is the only way to gain such a large amount of space, indeed, a whole new floor level! and they are generally working on an average of 30 – 40 sites at any time. The reasons are simple and obvious, the improvement in lifestyle, a basement is generally cheaper than moving, taking into account the larger house, stamp duty and moving costs, the added living space is a perfect investment in your home where properties have achieved a 30% increase in value and when you have invested time and money to create your home and perhaps
your children are settled in local schools, a new basement floor level to improve your lifestyle, makes complete sense. The old concept of dark damp basements has been fully dispelled, as you can see from the portfolio on London Basement’s web site, showing wonderful living and entertainment areas, which I have to admit, fill me with envy. It is also refreshing to find a company that provides a true design, build and project management
