Welcome to our November issue... In the 50 years since Ian Fleming’s debonair secret agent introduced himself to Sylvia Trench at a card table in Dr No, global politics have changed beyond recognition. The Iron Curtain has fallen, the Cold War has thawed, the People’s Republic Of China has emerged as a superpower and terrorism has shifted into the digital realm, forcing James Bond and his colleagues at MI6 to evolve. Actors, who have been licenced to kill during these five turbulent decades, have brought something new to the party.

London eateries have scored a net gain of 8 new stars, with a host of newcomers gracing the London culinary scene, as well as an old favourites going up a grade. No new London restaurants however entered the highly coveted 3 star range. This is still exclusively held by Alain Ducasse’s restaurant at The Dorchester and Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant in Chelsea, where head chef Clare Smyth took the reins in late 2008. She remains the only British female to hold the top Michelin award. Nationally two other restaurants have the honour, with the tiny village of Bray near Windsor hosting both Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck and The Westerside Inn headed by Alain Roux and Fabrice Uhryn. The ceremonial gateway between The Mall and Trafalgar Square has been leased to Prime Investors Capital, the company behind the new Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. Residential apartments are also planned with up to 100,000 visitors a year expected to pass through the hotel. The deal is dependent on Westminster City Council granting planning permission for the multi-million pound conversion of the Grade I GET THIS listed building.

The Christmas Forest This year, make your Christmas tree count more than usual
T
he Christmas Forest has been selling Christmas trees in London since 1998, and is London’s largest independent Christmas treetailer, operating from seven sites in London over Christmas. Their trees come in many different varieties and are all premium grade, meaning they last beautifully throughout the Christmas season. They offer a wide range of varieties including the ever popular Nordmann non-drop fir with its soft luxuriant foliage, the heady aromatic Fraser fir, the classic traditional spruce as well as re-plantable living trees. All the trees are open and clearly displayed so you can find the shape of tree to suit your room. The Christmas Forest brings the magic of visiting a country farm to the city and once you’ve chosen the right tree you can add a few more homely festive touches by shopping for wreaths, holly, mistletoe and even logs for the fire. You can also now buy online and have the tree delivered to your door (London only) and installation. Since 2006, for every tree bought, The Christmas Forest has donated a tree to be planted in Africa through Tree Aid. So far, they have planted 86,000 trees to date. Trees provide a long-term, practical solution to poverty and environmental destruction. The support Tree Aid has received from the Christmas Forest

over the last four years has been a lifeline for African families using trees to battle poverty and climate change. Every tree sold by the Christmas Forest means another tree is planted in the ‘Forests for Food’ Project in Ethiopia through Tree Aid. Trees mean life for many rural African families. Living with the effects of extreme poverty made worse by climate change, villagers are learning how to raise and care for trees thanks to these campaigns. Trees are not only good for the environment but also essential for the people. Trees often survive when other crops fail so families can rely on a sustainable, nutritious variety of foods including fruit, nuts and even leaves and flowers. Trees give shade and shelter, food for animals, natural medicines, tools and fuel. www.treeaid.org.uk This year, to help Tree Aid celebrate its 25th anniversary, they have set a target to plant our 100,000th tree in Africa. Every tree planted through the Christmas Forest partnership is a gift for an African family this Christmas, and for generations to come.
About The Christmas Forest Christmas Forest shops are based in Richmond, Dulwich, Stoke Newington, Islington, Kensal Green, Ealing and Putney. Call on 01865 427 067 www.christmasforest.co.uk

HAMPSTEAD CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY THE NW3 HAMPSTEAD BUSINESS GROUP 25TH NOVEMBER 12 - 5 PM
T
he NW3 Hampstead Business Group welcomes you to join them in celebrating the holiday season while supporting local business and charity at the fun-filled Hampstead Christmas Festival. Located on the High Street, the event is generated entirely by local volunteers and essential donations from local businesses. Last year saw up to 40,000 people having a thoroughly exciting and festive day, and this year they aim to do even better! As always, a local celebrity will be switching on the beautiful lights at the end of evening; though the celebrity is “to be announced,” they are delighted to welcome Shrek, from Dreamworks’ Shrek the Musical, onstage as well! In fact, a magical Christmas Shrek theme will be running throughout the festival, with a Shrek themed treasure hunt, Christmas grotto and a special free, first come first served, screening of Puss-inBoots at the Everyman Cinema at 10:30 am. The main stage will see live music throughout the day, including the Rock Choir and a number of great jazz bands; keep an eye out for some celebrities in the mix! There will be street entertainers appearing during the day as well. For the children, there will be two or three special magic shows taking place

as well as face painting, fire-eaters, the famous live reindeer, mesmerising birds of prey and of course, Santa’s magical grotto. For those looking for a thrill, check out the fairground! Again this year there is a range of wonderful stalls full of lovely locally made gifts for those difficult to shop for friends and relatives and mouth-watering food to sate your appetite after a day of activity! The Marie Curie Hospice in Hampstead is the recipient of the charitable donations during this year’s Festival; volunteers from Marie Curie will be collecting donations throughout the festival, so keep an eye out for them! The Hospice in Hampstead provides care and support for patients with terminal cancer and other illnesses as well as their families, free of charge. Every year it costs over £5.3 million pounds, and these donations allow the hospice to continue to carry out its good work. The Hampstead Christmas Festival is a great day out for the whole family, presented by the businesses and people of Hampstead for the community to enjoy.

Michelin Restaurant Guide 2013 reveals London gains 8 new stars The 2013 Michelin Restaurant Guide brings good news for London’s food lovers and restaurateurs.
L
ondon eateries have scored a net gain of 8 new stars, with a host of newcomers gracing the London culinary scene, as well as an old favourites going up a grade.
Welcoming London’s newcomers Dabbous, Bloomsbury Committed to serving British produce whenever possible, the “light HEDONE, CHISWICK

and modern” eatery has set itself the task of letting the quality of its dishes speak for itself. Expect less butter, less pomp and a more contemporary, fresh and seasonally-appropriate approach to food that is designed with today’s health conscious diner in mind. Refreshingly also expect a fairly priced experience from the restaurant/bar located seconds from Tottenham Court Road. Its seven course tasting menu is just £54, not including wine. Hedone, Chiswick Probably the biggest surprise of the 2013 list is the inclusion of Chiswick’s Hedone Restaurant, headed by the untrained Swedish chef, Mikael Jonsson. Picked as “One to Watch” by The National Restaurant Awards, the minimalist décor reflects Jonsson’s modern take on classics tailor made daily to reflect ingredient availability. Loosely translated as pleasure, Hedone has been an adrenalin injection into this otherwise subdued part of west London. LAUNCESTON PLACE, KENSINGTON
FO O D & D R I N K
TOM AIKENS, CHELSEA
ST JOHN’S HOTEL, SOHO
Launceston Place, Kensington Its adherence to tradition, tradition, tradition has made this quiet and cozy restaurant, tucked away in the maze of tiny backstreets south of Kensington High Street, a favourite with The Royal Borough’s business and ladies who lunch crowd for decades. But the old gems now has a new face and since taking over in February chef Tim Allen has added his personal touch to the Kensington institution, which proves with its new Michelin star that it has years left in it yet. Medlar, Chelsea Not everyone was sure what expect from the 2011 venture by Joe Mercer Nairner with David O’Connor. Nairner, an ex-Etonian, turn Oxford archeology and Anthropology grad only decided to make cooking his profession well into his 20s, while his partner David O’Connor cut his teeth in the industry form a very young age, working in his parents’ restaurant. But the surprise pairing has had some surprisingly good reviews. The Time’s AA Gill has called the low-key, high quality food “unexpectedly good” and “the best value anywhere in Chelsea.” St John’s Hotel, Soho Eccentric, understated but undeniably brilliant, the duo behind the growing St. John’s enterprise has gone from rags to riches in the last 20 years, helping to reform the London culinary scene along the way. Starting with their first East London Smithfield venture, everything Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver have touched has turned to delicious gold-coated, crackling amazingness. Their newest St. Johns restaurant, located in their very first St. John’s hotel, is no exception. The restaurant is busy day in, day out, with the pair pledging to keep plugging away on their British empire, all built around the concept of good British roasts. Tom Aikens, Chelsea Simultaneous simplistic and pretentious and known for its scandalous past, Tom Aikens’ conceptual restaurant is the perfect

TRISHNA, MARYLEBONE
Chelsea haunt that has even been frequented by the likes of Prince William and Kate. But after its heyday in the mid-2000s when the young British chef rose to international stardom for his takes on French classics and succeeded in winning the establishment its first star, Aikens hit hard times and his company was forced into administration. Since coming back, however, his flagship restaurant promises to be bigger than ever before with Aiken pledging that the change is “more than skin deep” and vowing to stick to his holistic approach that helped make him a rising star. Trishna, Marylebone Adding a welcome taste of the Asian subcontinent to the otherwise largely European list, Trishna has come to be loved as one of London’s best south west Indian eateries since opening its doors in 2008. The menu is filled with an elaborate array of seafood dishes that are cooked with an “innovative” twist that distinguishes Trishna from the other competition in the top-end Indian food range. The Westbury, Mayfair Head chef Alyn Williams is the driving force behind this elegant Mayfair establishment that opened its doors this time last year. While William’s first independent venture The Westbury has already pulled in the likes of enigmatic general manager, Giancarlo Princigalli, a long time veteran of The Berkley. The cooking is modern European, the service friendly, the atmosphere relaxed and the food not too overpriced. As the Michelin star suggests, the restaurant has all the necessary ingredients to become a lasting presence on the London scene. Sketch, Soho Although it is probably destined to be remembered for its futuristic, egg-shaped, pod toilets, the restaurant’s second Michelin star catapults the wonder team of Pierre Gagnaire and Mourad Mazouz into a whole new realm, illustrating that their weird but wonderful creation is only getting better with age.

Salvatore’s Legacy Is ‘Most Expensive Cocktail’
S
alvatore Calabrese broke the record for the world’s most expensive cocktail in the world with his ‘Salvatore’s Legacy’ drink which was made up of ingredients more than 200 years old. Salvatore Calabrese says Salvatore’s Legacy, made using ingredients dating back to before American independence and the French Revolution, will set you back a cool £5,500 per glass. Salvatore, whose nickname is ‘The Maestro’, made the costly concoction using 1778 Clos de Griffier Vieux Cognac, 1770 Kummel Liqueur, Dubb Orange Curacao circa 1860 and two dashes of Angostura Bitters circa 1900s. Guinness World Records confirmed the record, which beat its previous record holder, a cocktail costing £3,766.52 that is found on the menu of The Skyview Bar of Burj Al Arab Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Salvatore said he was proud to make ‘liquid history’ after breaking the record with the cocktail he mixed in his selftitled bar, Salvatore’s at Playboy Club, in London. He said: ‘It’s official, I am proud to say that history was made as well as consumed in my bar. ‘In front of a crowd, I needed very steady hands to open the
5 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2
vintage bottles and pour these precious ingredients into my own mixing glass, which I have had for 40 years.’ Salvatore has more than 30 years’ experience of creating drinks, developing his talent for combining flavours at an early age, whilst working in a bar in Maiori, a small village on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. In his 20’s, he moved to London, taking a position at Dukes Hotel in St James’s where he developed a niche market for special cognacs and was famed for his martini’s. He worked at other prestigious bars in London’s Mayfair before opening his own in Old Park Lane. He has become an expert on cognacs after spending many years tracking down, collecting and serving some of the world’s oldest and rarest vintages. His personal collection is worth more than £1m and is displayed in his bar at Playboy Club London. Enthusiasts travel from around the world to sample his collection that stretches back to 1770. It was ingredients from this collection that he used to make the world’s most expensive cocktail. Nothing like an exquisitely expensive cocktail to annihilate that bonus you just got. Mind you, maybe £5,500 a glass is a tad out of our price range, unless you’re a banker of course.

ADMIRALTY ARCH TO BECOME LUXURY HOTEL Admiralty Arch has been sold on a 99-year lease for £60m and is to be turned into a luxury hotel, it has been confirmed.
T
he ceremonial gateway between The Mall and Trafalgar Square has been leased to Prime Investors Capital, the company behind the new Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. Residential apartments are also planned with up to 100,000 visitors a year expected to pass through the hotel. The deal is dependent on Westminster City Council granting planning permission for the multi-million pound conversion of the Grade I listed building. Cabinet minister Francis Maude said the Government had secured a “good price” for the building and dismissed claims it would become the preserve of the super rich.”It is not the preserve of anyone at the moment and it won’t be,” he said. “The bars and restaurants will be open to the public. We think the price is a good price, a fair price. Obviously our main concern was to make sure the building is properly looked after, properly renovated and treated with the respect and affection it deserves.” Mr Maude said it was a great example of how Government
6 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2
property could spur growth and would bring new jobs to London. “It’s astonishing appearance gives no clue to the somewhat less astonishing history when it has been serving for most of that time as slightly random office space for the Government,” he said.”It’s a really great shame that in the 100 years since it was opened there has been virtually no public access to the arch outside of Government officials.” He added: “An impressive monument that it is on the outside, for decades the arch has languished as a glorified, actually not that glorified, office space. A taxpayer-owned building that offered little value to the taxpayer.”This arrangement will not only save money, it will bring this London landmark back to life, opening it up to the public and ensuring they have a say in its future.” The arch, which has been the focus of many national ceremonies over the last century, was commissioned by King Edward VII as a tribute to his mother Queen Victoria and was completed in 1912. The restoration will use original drawings by architect Sir Aston Webb dating back to 1910.

elebrating 40 years of world class equestrian sport, Olympia, The London International Horse Show returns to London this Christmas with its seven day equestrian extravaganza. The show will also celebrate Great Britain’s tremendous success in equestrian sport at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. During the evening performance on Wednesday 19th December, in conjunction with the British Equestrian Federation (BEF), Team GBR’s Jumping, Dressage, Eventing and Para-Equestrian Dressage Gold and Silver Medal winning teams will take part in a Medal Parade. Joining the Team from London 2012 will be a further eleven equestrian teams who have also had a highly successful 2012. These include senior, young rider, junior and pony teams from across the disciplines (full list included in notes). Olympia will continue with its traditional mix of outstanding sporting competition and great family entertainment. Firm favourite displays, The Shetland Pony Grand National and The Kennel Club Dog Agility will once again feature throughout the seven day event. What’s more, an exciting new circus themed display will soon be unveiled for the Olympia Finale. Top class international equestrian displays will be announced by The Organisers later in the year. Simon Brooks Ward, Managing Director of HPower and Event Director said: “It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years since my father reintroduced this magical event to the famous Olympia halls in the 1970’s. Today Olympia is recognised as one of the greatest equestrian events in the world and we are enormously proud to represent the outstanding riders and display teams who travel from all over the world to take part. As Olympia fans will know, the Christmas party atmosphere is what makes this event so special – you

Rare Luger pistol to be offered in auction WEDNESDAY, 12TH DECEMBER 2012 SOTHEBY’S, 34-35 NEW BOND STREET, LONDON W1
G
avin Gardiner Ltd’s final auction of 2012, of Fine Modern and Vintage Sporting Guns and Rifles. The sale, as always, will have a selection of interesting pistols. Among the pistols will be one of the rarest Luger pistols – only 10 are known to have been made and all have been given to high profile recipients such as President Roosevelt, Hiram Maxim, The King of Italy, Diaz of Mexico as well as the Kaiser Wilhelm II. The example in Gavin Gardiner Ltd’s auction was given to Andre Noel, Governor of Konstanz (on the Swiss/ German Border) in 1946 and is being sold by a member of his family, who now lives in London. It would have been personally inspected by George Luger and the chamber is inlaid with a gold presentation family crest. It is estimated at £15,000-20,000 and only one other is ever known to have been sold at auction.

Gavin Gardiner commented: “I am always delighted to include items in the auctions that have a fascinating story and provenance and this is no exception. The 1902 Presentation Luger Carbine is perhaps the rarest of all Luger pistols and it is thought that as few as 10 (numbered between 9105 and 9115) were built for personal presentation by George Luger himself. This example in common with other recorded examples has the entwined GL inspection stamp indicating that it was personally built or inspected by George Luger himself.” The auction of more than 200 lots of vintage sporting guns, rifles and shooting accessories, is the only sale of Sporting Guns to be held in the heart of London’s Mayfair and will have a strong section of 12-bore Sporting Guns by England and Scotland’s finest makers. Often known at the gunmakers’ gunmaker,
James Woodward was formed in 1874 and was acquired by James Purdey & Son in 1948. The company produced its first over and under example 99 years ago in 1913. A scarce 12-bore sidelock ejector over and under gun, built in 1922 by James Woodward & Sons is estimated at £24,000-28,000. Also among the 12-bores is a pair of 12-bore Imperial model sidelock ejector guns by E J Churchill, which is estimated at £5,000-7,000. The sale will include a strong section of accessories and more curious items – which could make wonderful Christmas gifts.

or those discerning fashion buyers who like their luxury crafted from the finest yarns and fabrics, using British expertise honed over generations, Archie Foal provides the first and last word in understated luxury. Their beautiful knitwear, long socks and outerwear for men and women have quickly become a byword of cool, quality for fashionistas and landed gentry alike. The design duo behind Archie Foal, Tessa Weale and Julian Turner combine two very different fashion aesthetics. Tessa, a recent Central St Martin’s graduate combines her cutting edge design with Julian’s more classic taste, developed from working with companies like Ralph Lauren, Zegna and Triumph, creating a clothing brand which is now seen as equally at home on grouse moors as on Bond St or Shoreditch. This broad appeal was quickly picked up by Harrods and Selfridges. ‘The idea started at a shooting party in Yorkshire’, Julian explains: ‘everyone was dressed in fairly traditional country clothing, in plus twos and breeks, but what caught my eye was the dazzling array of socks which had been knitted in a myriad of colours, often with contrasting tops, worn to the knee and held in position with garters.... they were beautiful and the quality knitting shone through’. Following extensive research we discovered that all these socks were made by a small and ever-dwindling number of British, family owned manufactures, some of which had been supplying the niche shooting markets for over two centuries. Archie Foal is keen to support them and bring their expertise and appeal to a much larger fashion market, ‘we now work with companies across the regions, ‘Our Welsh company is by Royal Appointment to Prince Charles, the English one has been making socks since the 1750’s and the luxury of our knitwear coming from Scotland is second to none, Tessa’s Irish so we’ve got the UK totally covered. ‘I’m obsessed with quality’ continues Julian, ‘we use the best yarns and fabrics we can find, where possible these are sourced in the UK from spinners in Yorkshire to tweed makers in Scotland.’ For this winter’s collection, Archie Foal has introduced some fitted, waxed cotton field jackets with biker detailing, as well as more socks and knitwear in fine yarns, such as cashmere, angora and extra fine merino, with everything made in Britain.

AN EXHIBITION AT SOMERSET HOUSE, STRAND 29TH NOVEMBER 2012 TO 3RD MARCH 2013
Valentino
A
Master of Couture
major new exhibition celebrating the life and work of Valentino will open at Somerset House this month. “Valentino: Master of Couture” will be a glamorous exhibition focusing exclusively on haute couture created by the legendary Italian designer. With a 50-year career starting in the late 1950s this exhibition will showcase over 130 hand-crafted designs worn by icons such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Gwyneth Paltrow. A prophetic designer and creator of exquisite, beautiful clothes, this is Valentino as he has never been seen before. Featuring dresses from the couture catwalk and red carpet, as well as designs commissioned by private clients, this exhibition brings together a comprehensive collection of couture, much of which has never been seen outside the Valentino atelier. The exhibition will give visitors a rare glimpse behind the closed doors of Valentino’s world, allowing them to experience the thrill of walking the runway and reveal Valentino’s craftsmanship. “Each of these designs have a beautiful story,” says Valentino. “The atelier crafted each so diligently by hand, taking hours, sometimes days to complete. The details are incredibly intricate, though outside the runway shows and events, the dresses have rarely been seen, so to be able to showcase these designs at Somerset House, where they can be seen in great detail by the public, is very unique.” Known for his long-standing relationships with the world’s most glamorous women, Valentino has designed for princesses, first ladies and Hollywood icons. As a result, exhibition highlights will include the vintage dress worn by Julia 7 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2
Roberts when she won an Academy Award in 2001, Jackie Onassis’s wedding dress from Valentino’s 1968 White Collection and Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece’s pearl-encrusted ivory silk wedding gown, which the New York socialite wore to marry Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece in 1995. The exhibition design for Valentino: Master of Couture has been created specially for Somerset House by internationally renowned design team Kinmonth Monfreda, long time collaborators of Valentino, and realised in collaboration with Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti. The exhibition has been curated by Alistair O’Neill for Somerset House with Patrick Kinmonth and Antonio Monfreda. Gwyn Miles, Director of Somerset House said: “We are delighted to welcome Valentino to Somerset House and show off his beautiful designs in such a spectacular way. Somerset House will be the ultimate destination for fashion and glamour this winter.” Opening Hours 10am – 6pm Daily. FLYING TRADER
GIVES PROFITS TO CHILDREN’S CHARITIES This year, internationally renowned forex trader Greg Secker, took to the skies of London, raising money for charity in a series of five Flying Trader events.
L
ast summer, Secker made money from thin air as he hovered above the City as the Flying Trader. A trained helicopter pilot, Secker flew above London whilst trading on the foreign exchange markets, sending down live trades and tips to an audience of over 500 Knowledge to Action traders. All brokerage commissions were donated to the children’s charities Barnardo’s and Ubuntu Education Fund, and a staggering total of over £160,000 was raised. Following the success of 2011’s events, from April to August this year, Secker held five more Flying Trader days, reaching a grand total of £250,000. In early 2011 Secker and his partner Katherine established the Knowledge to Action Foundation to help improve the quality of life for disadvantaged children around the world. For the past year, they have organised a variety of events raising money to support this. Last year’s Flying Trader funds were used by Ubuntu Education Fund to help launch their Early Childhood Development Programme (ECD) in Port Elizabeth, a project aimed at enabling disadvantaged children under five to enter primary schools with the same skills as their peers in London and New York. The ECD has already given 43 children the opportunity to be involved with reading, writing, singing, art, movement and story-time, three days per week.

The Funds also went towards supporting Barnardo’s “Hub” project. “The Hub” is a constructive workshop for youths based in East London and provides training and education for young people who are care leavers, young people who are disadvantaged by poverty, disability and abuse. They are trained within carpentry, plumbing and decorating with the students then receiving nationally accredited qualification and the opportunity of contraction apprenticeships. The £60,000 they received through The Flying Trader allowed them to keep their doors from closing. This year, as well as continuing to support these charities The Knowledge to Action Foundation will also be working with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Unite and Pride ‘n Purpose charities, helping disadvantaged communities around South Africa’s Sabi Sand Reserve, and improving their access to food, water, health and education services. Proceeds raised will be tracked daily on the Flying Trader website barometer and participants will be able to follow stories online of how the money helps each charity’s chosen project. Go to www.theflyingtrader.org to join in and watch as Secker as he trades from the skies as the Flying Trader.

Secret London Season at London Transport Museum
The Secret London season opens at London Transport Museum in November with an exhibition of illustrations, a talk at a secret London location and a tour of a disused Underground station. The Serco Prize for Illustration 2012 - Secret London UNTIL 10 DECEMBER An exhibition of 50 of the best competition entries submitted by professionals and students for The Serco Prize for Illustration. Entrants were invited to create an illustration that depicts little known or unusual aspects of the capital’s history, culture, characters and communities – past or present. Some of the illustrations are place specific showing surprising and little-known aspects of the Capital including the last working Sewer Gas Lamp in Carting Lane, a Russian Orthodox Church in West London, and part of London’s forgotten river-scape. Others take a playful, humorous approach showing wildlife in the context of famous London icons – foxes commuting on the London Underground and a ‘pigeon disco’ inside Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. Alongside these are illustrations that capture the hustle and bustle of the Capital, juxtaposed against others depicting calm and tranquil aspects of city life– a busy, multi-layered market scene, a solitary figure ascending the steps of Piccadilly Station and narrow boats on a canal. The competition has been organised in partnership with the Association of Illustrators (AoI) and this is the third year that Serco has sponsored the awards and exhibition. 8 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

BOND IS BACK...
SKYFALL
Time waits for no man, not even the suave and sharply attired 007.
I
n the 50 years since Ian Fleming’s debonair secret agent introduced himself to Sylvia Trench at a card table in Dr No, global politics have changed beyond recognition.
George Lazenby George Lazenby invested his short-lived 007 with tender romance while Roger Moore arched an eyebrow with impish glee, doling out innuendo-laden one-liners with aplomb.
Sean Connery Sean Connery married flirtatiousness with rugged machismo and bare-chested sex appeal, providing a template that successors have struggled to match.
Daniel Craig The latest Bond, Daniel Craig, has rugged physicality in abundance but his one-note interpretation of the spy who is shaken but never stirred remains devoid of personality.
Timothy Dalton Timothy Dalton added darkness and grit to his emotionally tortured agent, then Pierce Brosnan restored parity between athleticism and charm, coming closest to the glory days of the 1960s.

FILM
It’s telling that the abiding memory of Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace is a pair of tight, blue swimming shorts. Skyfall will do nothing to dispel those concerns but is undoubtedly the best instalment of Craig’s tenure to date. Director Sam Mendes sensibly surrounds his leading man with an ensemble of award-winning actors, who bring gravitas and humour to their iconic roles. This tour-de-force supporting cast encourages Craig to raise his game but also exposes his weaknesses as an actor, most noticeably in a pivotal scene of heartbreak, which relies on a drenching from a previous fist fight to send droplets of water down his inexpressive face, suggesting the tears of a momentarily broken man. In the brilliantly orchestrated action sequences, Craig is in his element and Mendes opens with a breathtaking 12-minute pre-credits sequence, which draws heavily from the Bourne franchise to propel Bond and field agent Eve (Naomie Harris) through the winding streets of Istanbul. The mission ends in apparent tragedy, heralding the sombre chords 8 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2
of Adele’s soaring theme song that harks back to the belting ballads of Shirley Bassey. With Bond reportedly killed in action, section chief M (Dame Judi Dench) pens an obituary as a political storm rages around her. A database of MI6 assets has fallen into the wrong hands, compromising undercover agents around the world. This dereliction of duty puts M and the department’s Chief Of Staff, Bill Tanner (Rory Kinnear), in the firing line and they are summoned to Westminster before a committee including the new Chairman of the Intelligence And Security Committee, Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), and ambitious rival Clair Dowar (Helen McCrory). While M fends off sustained attacks on her reputation, news filters through that Bond has survived and M engages her physically bruised agent to track down menacing cyber terrorist Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem). Working alongside Q (Ben Whishaw) and Eve, Bond traverses the globe in search of Silva, crossing paths with the mysterious Severine (Berenice Marlohe) in a casino in Macau, which facilitates a steamy shower sex scene. As the investigation continues, Bond unearths dark secrets from M’s past that threaten to bring down the whole of MI6.
FILM
Skyfall looks stunning courtesy of cinematographer Roger Deakins and action sequences don’t disappoint. Bravely, the 23rd Bond assignment pares back the slam bang thrills to concentrate on characterisation and plot, putting Dench’s authority figure at the centre of the betrayal. The film dazzles during verbal jousts, whether it’s M discovering Bond in the shadows of her London apartment (“You’re bloody well not sleeping here!”) or Silva fondling Bond’s inner thighs and asking what regulation training suggests he do. “What makes you think it’s my first time?” cheekily replies 007. Bardem is deliciously camp and menacing, recalling classic villains of yore as he berates M for her deceptions in one breath (“Mummy was very bad!”) then guns down innocent bystanders without mercy. Dench is wonderful as ever and really excels when she abandons her desk for the field of action. Supporting actress Oscar nominations have been bestowed for far less. Whishaw asserts himself as a gadget geek with a terrific introductory scene
in an art gallery, warning Bond that “age is no guarantee of experience.” A throwaway visual gag with his coffee mug is a hoot. Fiennes and Harris acquit themselves well but sultry Bond girl Marlohe is forgettable.
Skyfall (12A, 143 mins) Action/Thriller. Cast Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes, Berenice Marlohe, Rory Kinnear, Albert Finney, Helen McCrory Director Sam Mendes Released Out nationwide now
The closing 20 minutes are the only obvious misstep by screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan, who telegraph their intentions early on when Severine asks Bond if he will kill Silva and 007 responds “someone usually dies”. To tie up the loose ends, the writers hurriedly introduce an additional character, Bond’s old gamekeeper Kincade (Albert Finney), who exists purely to manoeuvre characters into the correct positions. Director Mendes gets high on nostalgia to the obvious delight of Bond purists. However, he spends slightly too long looking back and not enough looking forward, and consequently stumbles with the lacklustre final showdown more befitting of an episode of The A-Team than the second biggest film franchise in history. THE HISTORY OF HARLEY STREET Harley Street is owned by the de Walden family and managed by the Howard de Walden Estate. In 1711 the grid of streets around Harley Street, known as The Estate, was passed to Henrietta Cavendish Holles (the Duke of Newcastle’s daughter) who married Edward Harley (the 2nd Earl of Oxford).
B
etween 1715 and 1720, Edward, with the assistance of architect John Prince, decided to develop the streets around Cavendish Square for residential purposes naming many of the streets after members of the family. When Edward died the Estate passed to his daughter, Margaret Cavendish Harley who married the second Duke of Portland, and the area became known as The Portland Estate. The Dukes of Portland had ownership for five generations until the fifth Duke died without issue in 1879 and the land passed to Lucy Joan Bentinck, widow of the 6th Baron Howard de Walden and thus it became the Howard de Walden Estate. Florence Nightingale was Superintendent of the Establishment for Gentlewomen at No. 1 Harley Street in 1853. By 1860 many doctors

had moved into Harley Street, choosing the area because of the quality housing, the central location as well as the accessibility to major train stations such as Kings Cross St Pancras and Marylebone. As more and more doctors moved to the area they invited colleagues to work with them from their prestigious homes and Harley Street began to thrive as a medical centre, especially after the Medical Society of London opened in Chandos Street in 1873 then the Royal Society of Medicine in Wimpole Street in 1912. Since the nineteenth century the number of doctors, hospitals and medical organisations in and around Harley Street has greatly increased. Records show that there were around 20 doctors in 1860, 80 by 1900 and almost 200 by 1914. When the National Health Service was established in 1948 there were around 1,500. It is believed

that the primary reason that the area attracted so many medical organisations from the 19th century onwards was that these buildings were so suitable in size, layout and location for the development of medical establishments with high levels of comfort and patient care.
appendicitis just before his coronation. Today Sir Frederick Treves is probably best known for his friendship with Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man. The story of the surgeon and the heavily disfigured man was told in the 1980’s film of the same name.
Among the many talented doctors to have practiced in Harley Street over the years was the great British surgeon and polymath Sir Henry Thompson in the 1870s who specialised in surgery of the genito-urinary tract and was appointed surgeon-extraordinaire to the King of Brussels, and Doctor Edward Bach who practiced from Harley Street in the 1920s as a specialist in vaccines and bacteriology before moving to the London Homeopathic Hospital then developing the Bach Flower Remedies.
A more recent plaque to appear above the door at Number 146 Harley Street is in recognition of the career of Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue who successfully treated amongst others King George VI who had a pronounced stammer. Many famous people have lived in Harley Street, including the Victorian prime minister William Ewart Gladstone, the artist . Queen’s College, founded in 1848 and one of the oldest girls’ schools in England, is situated on Harley Street.
The Estate has always been particular about the type of people allowed to practice from Harley Street, and between the two World Wars for example, an application from a resident to let out a room to a dancing teacher was strongly rejected. Until after the Second World War, which was a real catalyst for change, masseurs and psychologists were treated with suspicion.
Today there are over 3,000 people employed in the Harley Street area and the private clinics are modern, comfortable and welcoming; a far cry from the original days when Harley Street doctors arranged their own appointments and dealt with correspondence by letter in candle light and resided in the house itself.
Among the distinctive English Heritage blue plaques which adorn many buildings up and down Harley Street is one dedicated to the prominent Victorian and Edwardian surgeon Sir Frederick Treves (1853 to 1923) who charged the maximum treatment fee of 100 guineas in the 1890’s. He is credited with performing the first appendectomy in England on 29th June 1888 and of saving the life of King Edward V11 who suffered an
The architecture of Harley Street is testament to the wealth that was flowing through some sections of Georgian Society and laid the perfect foundation for the area’s industry that was to follow. However it was the prosperity of the Victorian era, the desire for medical care and the leaps in science and medicine witnessed by that age that helped establish the area as the hub of medical care that it is today. arley Street has always been an attractive address, and is one of the most famous streets in London. While the number of bespoke tailors in Savile Row might be diminishing; and newspaper production has now moved away from Fleet Street, Harley Street continues to its long and well-earned prestigious reputation for private health care. Harley Street enjoys a long-standing reputation as a centre of private medical excellence and the district around Harley Street is more often referred to as Medical London because it has several private hospitals within the vicinity and the largest concentration of medical proficiency in the world. All the latest technology and cutting edge medical expertise has been moved into the area, and not surprisingly Harley Street is a highly desirable location from which to practice. Whatever type of medical expertise is required you can rest assured that Harley Street will have it covered, and is the first choice for exceptional private health treatment. Harley Street is popular with celebrities who attend highly acclaimed Harley Street doctors, for various surgery, treatment and aesthetic enhancements. The area attracts top medical practitioners, dentists, psychiatrists and plastic surgeons providing first class care, each of whom require a licence from the Estate in order to practice. Harley Street is owned by the de Walden family and managed by the de Walden Estate. Today, there are some 1,500 professional medical practitioners in and around the Harley Street area, offering a broad range of services from complementary medicine to cosmetic surgery and the range and
quality of services available continues to expand as new treatments and new diagnostic techniques emerge. Many of Harley Streets doctors and surgeons also work in the NHS and are attached to the London teaching hospitals. Several major private hospitals are situated in the area including The Harley Street Clinic, The London Clinic and the Royal family’s favourite; the King Edward VII’s Hospital, Sister Agnes. Harley Street is located just north of Oxford Street, and close to Marylebone High Street and the joys of Regents Park. In fact, the whole of the West End is accessible by foot and Harley Street is conveniently located for a number of quality hotels, restaurants and shops. The lively shopping Mecca known as Oxford Street, stretches for one and a half miles between Marble Arch on the West and Tottenham Court Road to the East, and boasts London’s longest row of department stores including large fashion department stores such as Selfridges and John Lewis. Aside from private clinics, Harley Street is also home to the prestigious Queen’s College, an independent day school for girls between the ages of 11 and 18, and occupies four large houses on Harley Street, with Her Majesty the Queen their patron, it demonstrates it’s excellence in private education. Harley Street is at the forefront in medical science and technology advancements and firmly on the map for medical excellence. If you want the very best in skills, expertise and care then look no further than this illustrious address. N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2 9 7

What’s in a mole? A mole (or naevus) is the term applied to any spot on the skin. Many molesare coloured (pigmented) but some have no colour. What is a Melanoma? A melanoma is the medical term for a mole. This simply means any pigmented or n on pigmented lesion; it does not mean a cancer. Although most moles are brown, they can vary from flesh coloured through yellow and blue, to black. Moles can be many different shapes and can be single or multiple, on almost any part of the body. Everybody has moles; some people have more than others. Most moles have formed before the age of 20, but some people can get new moles well into their 30s or beyond. Melanoma Symptoms The vast majority of moles remain benign (non cancerous) and never cause any trouble. However, a small number may change with time and have the potential to become a cancerous mole (malignant melanoma). If a mole changes in size or colour, if it itches, is painful or bleeds, or if new nodules develop around it or it looks red and inflamed then the mole should be removed for examination. Melanoma Treatment It is important that moles are removed properly so they can be thoroughly examined. It is usually recommended that moles are removed with an ellipse of normal skin around them, aiming for a 2mm margin of clearance. Most of the moles that are removed turn out to be fine. Pathologists (doctors who examine tissues under the microscope) use different terms for benign moles. They may be junctional, juvenile, blue, compound, dermal or intradermal. All these are descriptions for benign (non cancerous) moles. Some will be what are called dysplastic moles. These are thought to be precancerous moles that have the potential to become malignant melanomas if they are left. Although many of them may not turn cancerous it is impossible to tell and so they should probably be removed. The next stage after the dysplastic 9 8 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

mole is the malignant melanoma in situ. This has just turned cancerous, but does not have the ability to spread. Like the dysplastic mole, it is cured by removing it properly. Malignant melanomas proper have the ability to spread around the body, so the earlier they are caught the better. It seems that the most important factor in determining whether a malignant melanoma may have spread or not is its thickness. This is measured in mm and is called the Breslow thickness. Depending on the thickness, a wider removal of the skin around a malignant melanoma is usually recommended. Malignant melanomas that are less than 1mm thick have a greater than 95% chance of causing no further trouble. Another way of measuring the thickness of a malignant melanoma is the Clarke’s level. This relates to which layers of the skin the malignant melanoma has penetrated. This is less accurate that the Breslow thickness in predicting the likelihood of further problems.Melanoma Specialists As with other cancers, it is important that people who have had malignant melanomas are treated by a team of specialists. Melanoma specialists include a dermatologist, a surgeon and perhaps a plastic surgeon, an oncologist and a pathologist. Malignant melanoma risk factors Some groups of people should be regularly checked for abnormal moles. These include people who have had a malignant melanoma before, or there is a family history of it, fair skinned, fair haired or red haired people and those with a large number of moles, as well as those who have had considerable sun exposure in their lives, particularly with episodes of severe sunburn when they were young. I THINK I’VE FOUND A LUMP IN MY BREAST...
WHAT DO I DO? It is completely understandable that you might worry about the possibility of breast cancer if you find a lump, but remember; most lumps are not cancer. The most likely cause for a lump depends on your age.
Women from 20s to 30s In women from 20 to 30 a definite lump is most likely to be a fibroadenoma. These are benign lumps that can sometimes be painful or enlarge but they are not cancerous and do not turn cancerous.
Women between 40s and 50s Between 40 and 50 breast cysts becom more common. These are also entirely benign. They are collections of fluid within the breast and although they can also be painful they are not dangerous.
Women aged 30 and onwards From the age of 30 onwards the gland tissue in the breast changes and it becomes more fibrous and nodular. The way the breast feels has been described as like a scaled down packet of frozen peas and occasionally, in just the same way that frozen peas can stick together to form a clump, so breast tissue can “stick together” to form definite nodular areas. These areas are also often tender but, once again, are not a sign of cancer. 1 0 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2
The rate of breast cancer begins to rise after the age of 40 and increases with age. Of course, breast cancer can occur at any age and I have seen cases in women as young as 19 and in their early 20s, but they are very, very rare. The important message is, if you notice a change in your breast please get it checked. Let’s go through what you need to do. The first thing to do is to see your GP and explain what you have noticed. They will examine you and in some cases may suggest a further check at a different time of your menstrual cycle. Some of the nodular areas can change with the cycle and this is actually a reassuring sign. If a discrete nodular area persists or your GP finds a definite lump, or is unsure, they will refer you to a breast clinic for a full assessment by the breast team. The team should consist of several consultants working together, and includes a surgeon a radiologist and a pathologist. The investigation of any breast problem revolves around, what is
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y
called, the triple assessment. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle; pieces (of information) are collected and put together until the whole picture (the diagnosis) becomes clear. Indeed, this is often termed “the diagnostic jigsaw”. In some cases only 2 pieces may be needed, in others 4, but 3 (the triple assessment) is most common. Let’s have a look at what the pieces are. The first specialist you meet will often be the breast surgeon. They will ask questions about your symptoms (called taking your “history”). They will also ask about previous medical problems and your family history. They will then examine both breasts. How the breast feels when it is examined is the first part of the jigsaw. If there is a definite area of change then a fine needle aspiration may be carried out. This test uses a normal sized syringe and needle. The needle is placed into the area of the breast and “jiggled” so that a small amount of material is sucked into the syringe. This is sent away to be looked at under the microscope. More commonly now a test known as a core biopsy is done. A core biopsy takes a core of breast tissue about 1.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The core biopsy is carried out by first putting some local anaesthetic into the skin of the breast. Once this has worked (it is quite quick) a small nick is made in the skin to allow the core biopsy needle, attached to the biopsy “gun”, to be placed into the breast. When the “gun” is “fired” (it is painless, but does make a noise rather like a large stapler) the needle takes the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw. The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast. In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this. In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an
ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw. If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma. What if the pieces don’t quite fit and the picture (diagnosis) is not initially obvious (the triple assessment is then said to be discordant)? For example, in a 50 year old lady a lump may feel like a benign nodular area but look odd on an ultrasound with a normal mammogram. In this case another piece of the jigsaw may be needed, such as an MRI scan or even, occasionally an operation to remove an area for full examination under the microscope. An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thoroughly investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

have helped many people from all walks of life shake off the weight of the financial crisis by boosting their resilience. I show clients how to be flexible and strong enough to overcome challenges and setbacks. They overcome constraints on their performance and build on their competencies to get what they want out of life. Clients who ask about boosting confidence to become more successful are often surprised to hear that the two are not necessarily related. Some of the most successful people on the planet are enormously insecure. That is what has driven them to succeed. Whether they are happy with their lives is another question. So what’s the secret? My individual consultancy helps clients respond to challenges with much greater personal insight. This means practicing clear thinking about themselves, others and circumstances, through a structured process of questioning and action. Here are my five top tips for building resilience:
reflecting on where they are, and wondering why they’re unsatisfied. The great news is it’s never too late to start planning! With some thought and preparation, you can map out your future your way. There are lots of tools available to help you and it can normally be done in a day. What do you really want? Why? What does it look like? How much do you want it? What are the steps for getting it? Would they be any different if you knew you couldn’t fail in your efforts? When you get it, how will you know? What are you willing to sacrifice to get it? What are you not going to give up? What decisions do you face now? What else do you want?

GET INTO SHAPE THE EASY WAY A revolutionary treatment for both Men and Women By Rachel Gold Fashion & Beauty Editor I arrived for my treatment feeling a little apprehensive yet slightly excited as the Electro slim treatment had been described to” Guarantee inch loss” and to show “ Immediate results”
increased or decreased dependant on the client and tolerance level. It was a bit unusual at first, however it felt like a fairly firm all over body massage. For 45 minutes I was relaxed and listened to soothing music
I think it is important to say at this point that I am not over weight and I do train regularly. However I have a fair amount of cellulite on my hips and bottom, which is really unsightly, and I just cannot seem to shift it no matter how many squats I do! So it was my aim to target those areas in particular. My fears were elayed and nerves calmed when I was met at reception by the delightful and friendly nutritionist Lamiss. During our consultation I was given a print out of my body composition analysis which is very comprehensive and extremely in depth and interesting.
I could feel my body being toned! When the treatment was finished I felt refreshed and a little tingly but best of all I had lost 7 inches of my total body measurements.
Who is this treatment for? The treatment is for anyone who wants to lose weight People who cannot or do not want to go to the gym Anyone who may have lost a lot of weight and wants to tighten and tone the muscles Women or Men who have cellulite and want to tone up Men who want to get rid of unsightly moobs For people who want to see immediate results I was weighed, and my body fat percentage was measured. We also discussed my lifestyle and eating habits. On to the treatment room, which was nice and calm with a relaxing atmosphere. I was measured with a tape measure at different points of my body. I hopped onto the bed and the pads were then applied. The current of electricity passes through the pads into the body, the current may be

The appearance of my cellulite had changed also. I felt much more toned and trim. The treatment is definitely very different and far more effective than other treatments I have tried. I am sure if I did a course I could get into my bikini and not have to hide behind my sarong anymore, Highly recommended. What The Treatment Is Repetitive variable electrical pulse waves are sent into specific zones in your body through the use of skin contact electrodes. This produces rhythmic and powerful subcutaneous muscle contractions, resulting in the surrounding fat cells being used to supply energy. Shimmer, Sparkle and Party!
Prepare for all those fabulous soirées and get party perfect with these beauty essentials. By Levanah Reyes-Wainwright Party Prep The night before the big event you need to ensure your skin is prepped to perfection. Cleanse with Emma Hardie’s Moringa Cleansing Balm (£34, emmahardie.com) to purify and moisturise the skin whilst naturally lifting and sculpting. Then sweep on Alpha H’s aptly named Liquid Gold (£31.50, beautybay.com) with Glycolic Acid for an ‘overnight facial’ that will very gently slough away dead skin cells, to leave you with a radiant complexion come morning. Finish with a slick of intense moisture, with pure wonder 101 ointment from Lanolips (£11, victoriahealth.com) to relieve dry, chapped winter lips. On the night, control shine with Wild About Beauty’s Mattifying Balm (£20, wildaboutbeauty.com). This lightweight, colourless balm will 1 1 2 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2
smooth the skin’s surface, erase the appearance of fine lines and mattify oily areas – making it the perfect base for makeup and ‘on-the-go’ touch ups. For skin that looks natural, illuminated and bright, blend Urban Decay’s Naked Skin (£27, Debenhams) buildable liquid foundation over the top for a weightless and virtually invisible base. The light-diffusing spheres and revolutionary, paraben-free formula creates a flawless, demi-matte finish like photoshop in a bottle. Peepers that POP! This party season try one of three catwalk trends on your eyes. For the perfect day to night golden smoky eye, Clarins Odyssey Eye Quartet Mineral
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y
Palette (£30, clarins.co.uk) has brown, beige and taupe-bronze that can be layered as desired with a gold leaf highlighter to add a touch of luminosity. Or instead opt for the subtler purple smoky eye. Estée Lauder’s Gelée Powder Eyeshadow in Cyber Lilac (£19, esteelauder.co.uk) can be used dry for a sophisticated look or wet for a bold futuristic full colour finish. Finish with a trace of Tom Ford’s Plum Absolute For Eyes (£25, 0870 034 2566) gel liner onto the lash line for a flash of ruby-wine colour. For a kick of glam with the khaki trend, start at the lash line and blend directly upwards towards the socket line with New CID’s i-colour mousse in Moss (£14, newcidcosmetics.com). This beautiful gold-flecked green pigment won’t crease or smudge. Then take Elizabeth Arden’s Beautiful Colour Eyeshadow in Golden Ivy (£16, available nationwide) and blend into the outside corners of the eyes. This charcoal khaki with a low pearl finish is infused with Retinyl Linoleate and Vitamins C and E to help to smooth the appearance of ageing signs and deliver long lasting colour with skincare benefits. If you fancy a bold look, then draw a thick line of Maybelline Master Smoky Navy Shadow-Pencil (£5.99, Superdrug) and use the in built smudger to blend out. Next add drama with Bourjois’s Lady in Black Mini Lashes with Precious Gems (£7.99, Superdrug) using their 2-in-1 False Eyelash Applicator if you are not confident applying freehand. If false lashes aren’t your thing, then apply lashings of MAC’s Zoom Waterfast Lash (£14, maccosmetics.co.uk) famous for its tear, sweat and humidity-proof formula, ideal for dancing the night. Face the music For a flush of colour on the cheeks as seen on the AW12 catwalks, sweep on Origins Pinch Your Cheeks lightweight powder blush (£20, origins.co.uk). The sleek compact features a mirror making it easy to quickly touch up whilst out. For a more sheer natural glow and budget friendly option, NYX Cosmetics Powder Blush in Peach (£5.50, nyxcosmetics.co.uk) delivers silky colour and last for hours. For a warm party glow, Bobbi Brown’s newest Shimmer Brick shade 24 Karat (£35, bobbibrown.co.uk) contains five different shades that when blended together create a gorgeous seasonal sparkle on the high points of the cheeks. Party Pout Forgo eyeshadow and liner and let you lips do the talking. Velvet lip textures were the talk of the town at fashion week and Chanel’s Rouge Allure Velvet L’impatiente (£25, 02074933836) luminous matt deep berry lip colour is beautiful acessorised with lots of mascara. Hawthorn Berry Lip Velvet from Burberry (£22.50, Harrods) is a less harsh brown-based berry for those who want a softer look with moisturising benefits. If you like a more glossy lip but
dislike sticky consistencies, Mii’s Shimmering Lip Sheen in Thrill (£14.95, gerrardinternational.com) gives a slick finish and the holographic particles give a 3D effect that make lips appear fuller. Nail It Nail Technician Aphrodite at Paul Edmonds eponymous luxe London nail bar (pauledmonds.com) says, “Classic festive colours that never fail over the party season are rich golds, silvers, deep reds and greens, and of course a touch of sparkle, which should be applied to short and blunt nails to be perfectly on trend.” Essie’s Leading Lady (£7.99, Boots) is a glittering high wattage crimson inspired by regal colours. “It’s one part Queen Elizabeth, two parts Duchess of Cambridge,” says Essie Weingarten, Founder and Global Creative Director. Jessica Nails Platinum Wishes (£9.75, gerrardinternational.com) is a blue, silver and green glitter combo sure to get you noticed; or if you fancy a bit of modern metallica with a hint of opulence, layer Rococo’s glistening gold Alcazar (£12, Space NK) and their 24 Gold Leaf Lacquer (£35, Space NK) to add drama to your manicure. For a festive, magical sparkle YSL’s La Laque Couture Top Coat N°33 Première Neige (£18, yslbeauty.co.uk) should be applied for a wash of lunar highlight for a new twist on a classic base colour. Crowning Glory For party hair that looks effortlessly done, wash and condition hair with LaCoupe Orgnx Brazilian Keratin Shampoo and Conditioner (Both £9.95, Harvey Nichols) to fight frizz and humidity for lustrous shine. Natural tousled waves and relaxed curls go with any outfit and TONI&GUY’s unique Hourglass Wand (£30, available nationwide) is wide at the top, tight in the middle and wide at the bottom will help you achieve this look every time. This new wand also heats up 30% faster leaving extra time for makeup application. If you are going from desk to dancefloor and need extra volume after a long day, spray ultra sheer Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleansing Spray (£18, 08700342454) to absorb excess sebum and give texture and oomph to flat hair. Fancy adding a few slices of colour to your hair but don’t want to commit to anything long-term? Flip-In Hair Flashes (£24.99, flipinhair.co.uk) a funky collection of five-inch wide colour flash extensions on a damage free clear wire, can be heat styled, washed and brushed just like you would your own hair, and come in a range of fabulous bright colours. Finally… Get those legs out with confidence thanks to Xen-Tan Luminous Gold Gel (£24.99, xen-tan.co.uk) a unique brand new incredible self-tan. This totally clear gel with a lovely subtle gold shimmer just needs to be applied by hands or a mitt and then watch as your skin transforms into the perfect golden winter tan.

CREATE THE BEDROOM
OF YOUR DREAMS As winter approaches there’s no better time to transform your bedroom into a luxurious bolthole, where you can relax as well as sleep.
Y
ou’ll ensure sweet dreams if you literally allow your imagination to run wild and indulge your taste to create a sanctuary that soothes your senses. “When it comes to creating the perfect winter retreat, you need to make sure it’s as snug and as inviting as possible,” says Damian Topping at bed specialists, Dreams. “We’re demanding far more of this room than ever before, because it’s often used as another ‘lounge’ where we sit and relax, watch television, and generally enjoy private time. “Nowadays, we find people have very definite ideas about their style. They’ve often stayed in hotels and want to replicate a look they’ve liked, whether it’s ultra-traditional, romantic or a sophisticated, ‘hotel’ style which leans to the contemporary.” The bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom and will dominate the space, so care needs to be taken in choosing its scale, design and style. But equally important is making the right decor choice, says colour and design manager at Dulux Rebecca Thompson.
“Colour affects our mood and is particularly key in setting this room’s atmosphere. While soft neutrals conjure a serene, restful space, that doesn’t mean you can’t have colour which is so popular in homes currently,” she says. “Greens and blues are popular, and I’d favour a rising star in the colour palette, indigo. It’s a striking, rich statement shade inspired by dreamy, ocean landscapes hidden from everyone but deep sea divers. “It tones with warm neutrals or other soothing tones of blue or purple.” Get the look with Indigo Night from the Dulux Paint Mixing range, one litre emulsion, £14.89. If a makeover’s beyond the budget, simply opting for new bedding to welcome winter can be just as effective, advises interiors specialist, Alison Cork. “Good bed linen can totally transform not only the look of your bedroom but also your sleep quality,” she says. “A beautiful set of crisp white soft sheets will give a bed an instant lift, and the comfort and texture can help you drift off more comfortably too.” N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2 1 1 5

Romantic style Four-poster beds, buttoned headboards and sumptuous fabrics are all key ingredients of a room where indulgence and sensuality rule. “This is a room which is a visual feast and pleases the senses,” says Rachael Offer, senior designer at Ashley Wilde, who have a variety of celebrity bed linen brands. “Mix sumptuous faux fur cushions with silky satin and velvet fabrics to create a full-on luxury feel. Little details count as well, from gilded mirrors to glass ornaments which catch the light, and lighting’s all important. “Give a soft flattering glow with fairy lights, side lamps or candles.”
linen from the Kylie Minogue At Home collection, from £75 for a double duvet cover, from Ashley Wilde (available from various stockists nationwide). Plunder the Littlewoods range for special touches, such as a Pearl Throw and Shams (cushions), £85, Mongolian cushion, £35, and a gorgeous duck egg blue floral Magnolia bedding set, £25 for a double set, and matching throw, £85. Create twinkling candlelight safely with Philips Imageo LED rechargeable candle lights, from £19.99 for a set of three, Amazon.
Country style
Boudoir buys The And So To Bed bed collections conjure the elegance and period detail of a grand boudoir. A Victorian-style Dickens brass bed with polished nickel finish, £7,875 for king size, is an investment piece and potential heirloom. Alternatively, you can feel like a pampered princess as you lie back on a Louvre Bedstead, currently from £999 in the Pied A Terre range, House of Fraser. It’s upholstered in buttoned soft velvet with an elegantly scrolled head and foot. Dunelm Mill is always rich on style but kind to the purse, and its white painted Lilly Metal bedstead, with brass-look details, starts from £179.99. A budget winner.
The essence of country style is pared-back decoration, with the emphasis on texture and quality and natural materials. Decor should be simple with painted or tongue-and-groove panelled walls, or wallpaper featuring nature to help set a rustic scene. “Keep clashing patterns to a minimum and instead layer textured soft furnishings, quilts and cushions to give a snuggly feel,” says Damian Topping. “Use a large rug, such as a sheepskin, to add warmth on wooden floorboards or hard floors. Add to the air of informality by using, instead of a bedside table, books stacked in a small tower by the bedside. Opt for functional, practical lights and a few well-chosen prints for the walls. Fussy embellishment has no place in these rooms.”

would be a perfect backdrop for a Toronto bed, in oak with leather headboard, £775 for a double. Both from John Lewis. Alternatively, treat yourself to a new headboard, such as one reflecting the trend for Highland checks and plaids. Modern headboard, double £379, upholstered in Fanshaw plaid, from Marks & Spencer. Bedding Snuggle under an Alfie throw, £60, in faux shearling wool and suede, John Lewis. If you favour a homespun-style a cable knit throw, currently £55 from the Linea range at House of Fraser, is perfect, and would team well with its checked brushed cotton bed linen set, currently £72 for a double. Cox & Cox’s hand stitched quilted bedspread, £150, in fashionable grey, and its linen cushion covers, from £32, have an appropriate simplicity. It also has suitable accessories such as a Nordic enamel pendant lamp, £120, and a cow hide patchwork rug, £700. Add cheery seasonal colours, in red and bright blue, with striped knitted throws, £30 each, from a selection at Bhs.
Hotel chic For contemporary hotel design invest in neutral bed linen, in crisp cotton and natural fabrics, a quality duvet, and pile up fluffy pillows, says Topping. “A plain decor scheme can be enlivened with a wall of pattern whose colours tie in with the neutral shades on the wall,” he says. “Opt, ideally, for a generous sized headboard and
streamlined furniture to add subtle but understated style. Overdress the bed, with an abundance of covers, quilts and a runner to create a lavish effect.” Minimise clutter, he advises, and enhance the room with soft lighting using sidelighters and dimmers. “This style of room should cocoon you and black-out blinds and inter-lined curtains will avoid any chinks of light from disturbing your sleep.” Boudoir buys A Zinc bedstead, from £2,999 (mattress extra), from Dreams, upholstered in a metallic weave available in lush tones of taupe, mink, silver, nickel and amethyst, also has a 26-inch TV concealed at the foot. The White Company has made this ‘hotel’ style its own with its range of classic headboards and beautiful bedroom furniture. The buttoned Richmond, from £695, is one of my favourites, as is its white lacquer finish Linden four poster bed, from £2,500. Another great choice is a Jennifer upholstered bedstead, with button edging, £1,099 for a double, from John Lewis. Bedding The Dorchester bed linen, made in Egyptian cotton, from £32 for a pillow case, and a Belmont Velvet Quilt, from £250, would make a decadent finishing touch. Both from The White Company. Embrace the look at a fraction of the price with Alison At Home’s Berkeley bedding set, five-star quality 300 thread count with satin spot design, from £75 for a double set. ith the evenings slowly drawing in, its time to cosy up for the oncoming Winter. Inviting fires, comforting textures and beautiful wintry colours will help create the perfect retreat. Helens ever identifiable moody hues of greys, taupes and blues with splashes of bright colour help to complete the look. Helen decided to devote half the St. Johns Hill showroom in Clapham over to accessories and furniture last Spring, it began its life as a fabrics only showroom. As the business gained momentum, Helen decided to introduce the home accessories collection to the London store, so this is the first Christmas that will really show off the full range. Helen explains “ We are known in Dublin for our amazing seasonal accessories every year and the shop is always mobbed coming up to Christmas. I try to source decorations that will last forever, there is nothing nicer than taking out decorations every year when I am putting up the tree with the kids and knowing they are of good quality and that you will love them year on year. We always have great fun doing up the shops for Christmas and creating a really festive mood”. In addition to decorations, Helen likes to layer up sofas and chairs with comforting blanket throws and wool tweed cushions in purples and greys. Blankets and throws can be kept in rustic rattan baskets. Large glazed church candles in hurricane lamps and elegant low lighting with some simple stylish lamps and you have the perfect Winter haven. Helens new range of scented candles will also be launching at the beginning of November. She has spent the past six months creating her own range with a British candle company and has come up with five exclusive scents after much deliberation.
Winter Comforts
It’s the season to cuddle up, so do it in style with the indulgent new range of accessories from Helen Turkington Interiors to take you from Autumn through to Christmas. “I had created my own paint & fabric range, so it was time to turn to a scented candle range. We have spent years stocking other peoples candles but we were never quite hitting the mark with what we wanted in terms of the perfect scents, so I set out to create my own favourite combinations; Champagne, Peach & Cassis, White Tea & Wisteria, Leather Tobacco and Cognac and Lemon Verbena & Grapefruit. We also added a fifth scent in with the four main ones as it is such a great scent combination for the colder months, we called it Winter, a delicious combination of Cinnamon Orange and Clove. We have been burning our samples in the stores and our customers have been placing pre orders for Christmas gifts. There is nothing I like more than walking into a room that smells of something festive and evocative of this time of year” The range will come beautifully presented in subtle grey and white boxes with Helens signature bow. A great gift for the dinner party season.

A COSY WINTER
RETREAT
You don’t always think of retreating to the garden during the long winter months, but a garden room can make this a real possibility
C
old, rain, frost, snow – usually we leave the garden to hibernate during the winter and stay curled up in our centrally heated houses. But often our winter gardens offer stunning views, and we can get a bit fed up with being indoors all the time. With a garden room from Crown Pavilions you can enjoy garden living all year round. Luke Dejahong, Managing Director of Crown Pavilions, explains, “Outdoor living is an all-year possibility with our garden rooms. We manufacture in the UK using Canadian Western Red Cedar as the main basis of our structures. It is one of the best natural insulating

materials and one of the most durable timbers for the outdoors. It is perfect for the UK climate. And we now offer fully insulated, doubleglazed argon gas-filled windows and doors, and solid oak rustic flooring”. Crown Pavilions manufacture a whole range of garden rooms which can feature sitting rooms with plasma screens, studies with storage and internet connection, screens and fold back doors, mood lighting for evening entertainment, heating, hot tubs, home gyms, and outdoor kitchens or barbecues for when the weather warms up.

Even in the winter you can enhance your use of outside space. One of the very important details is the landscaping. “When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of how it fits into your garden design,” says Luke. “Our sister company, Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting. We advise and design the planting around the garden room to fit in with the style of your existing garden. You can landscape around the structure to create an integral part of your garden, at every season of the year.” Crown Pavilions have created some wonderful garden rooms for many UK and international clients. They specialize in providing a tailored, bespoke service. All the products are manufactured in the UK. A garden room should be an extension of your home, and you can put it wherever you want. Planning permission is not usually required but you should always contact your local planning officer, or let Crown Pavilions do that for you. They provide a seamless hassle-free product and service from order to completion.
All that is left is for you to turn up the heat, light some candles, decorate with some winter foliage, and you have a warm winter garden retreat for whiling away the long winter afternoons.

DREAMING OF A
GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP? Are you battling the bulge, falling asleep at your desk or regularly snapping at your nearest and dearest? Wondering what you can do to break this miserable cycle? Try getting a good night’s sleep, say the experts
W
e all do it, head upstairs to bed and make a silent prayer that seven hours of undisturbed sleep awaits, but for around one in three people, this isn’t the case. While there are multiple factors for sleep deprivation, stress and bodily functions being the main culprits, comfort is one of the barriers between most Brits experiencing that elusive good night’s sleep. “People are always shocked to discover how much of their waking life is negatively affected by their poor sleep pattern. Everything from their work productivity to their personal relationships, even their weight and memory can be impacted by poor sleep,” said Brent Cooper, bed expert from luxury British bed manufacturer Marshall & Stewart. According to The Great British Sleep Survey 2012, poor sleep regularly has a negative impact on a person, both emotionally and on a physical level. The two-year survey, which documented the sleeping habits of more than 20,000 Brits, states that long-term poor sleepers are seven times more

likely to feel helpless than good sleepers and five times more likely to feel alone, but also twice as likely to have relationship problems, suffer daytime fatigue and lack of concentration. With lives becoming increasingly busy and work pressures continuing to escalate, experts are reporting more people than ever seeking advice and assistance, desperate to break their poor sleep cycles. “We’ve seen a definite shift in people’s attitude towards sleep and bed purchasing over the past few years. Ten years ago it was rare for a person to seek out an expert to help them select the right bed, but now people are better educated about the importance of a good night’s sleep. More people appreciate that they spend a third of their life asleep and that this time has a massive impact on the rest of their life. Their bed is one of the most important, valuable purchases they will ever make, and we’re finally seeing people give it the investment and thought it deserves,” Mr Cooper added. While there is no shortage of discount beds available online and in High Street stores, The Sleep Council - which is funded by the National Bed Federation, the trade

Having recently launched the brand’s flagship bed – the Koh-I-Noor, the familyowned company is committed to improving the long-term sleep health of each of its clients.
Mr Cooper, who has over 30 years’ experience in the British luxury bed industry, said: “Like with all things, you get what you pay for. Cheap beds may feel adequately supportive and reasonably comfortable in the showroom but will quickly deteriorate and you will find yourself suffering from poor sleep very quickly. Investing in a high-quality bed not only provides a more comfortable night’s sleep on day one, they are

Adding Value
Greendawn Build suggest ways to utilise space and maximise investment

t a time when mortgage lenders are holding back and the housing market is unstable, many people are deciding against pursuing a costly and lengthy move and investing instead in their current properties. Heath Gillett, owner of Greendawn Build explains, “A lot of the clients we come across are looking to add to their existing space. Rather than suffer all the extra costs of moving, such as agents’ and solicitors’ fees, surveys and stamp duty, we are seeing an increasing number of clients deciding to expand and improve their homes, which leaves them with much needed extra space and adds value to their home. For example, loft extensions can add up to 10% to a property’s value.”
clients who love their family home but just simply don’t have the space for their needs. In most cases, they may already have the staple loft and kitchen extensions so the natural step on from that is a basement development.” “The cost of moving home in London can be as high as £20,000, if you’re happy where you are, why not reinvest that money into your property? Basement developments are very popular in areas such as Wandsworth, Fulham, St John’s Wood and Kensington and we are seeing more and more of it in this area.” Heath had years of experience working on basement developments before starting his own company so it made sense that Greendawn Build would offer this service.
Projects mostly include loft extensions, kitchen extensions, total redesign and remodel and even basement developments: “The best thing about basement developments is that you can add a huge amount of extra space to your property. Most councils will allow you to build up to the boundary, so you can add a whole extra floor to the house. Some even add two floors!”
Clients use basements for entertainment rooms, studies, offices, guest bedrooms, bathrooms, gyms and swimming pools, there really are no limits to what can be done. Some people can be put off the idea of a basement because of the lack of light, however, with clever use of light wells, they don’t feel subterranean.
Clients may not just be avoiding the hassle of moving home but also reluctant to leave their beloved home, neighbourhood, catchment area: “We have

SHADES OF GREY
Fifty Shades Of Grey is a best-seller with its tale of seduction, and just as irresistible is the trend for shades of grey in interiors. Gabrielle Fagan explores the sophisticated power of grey and how it transforms rooms. Grey is so sexy and sophisticated - not the masterful hero of the best-selling novel, but the decor colour.
“Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge. Grey is full of surprises and won’t fail to seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms.
Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home.
Face the wall If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they change with the light in your home throughout the day. It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or piece of furniture.
“Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone,” advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth. 1 3 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2
Furnishing affair Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries. This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks
always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast. Grey works in modern and older properties, and will look as beautiful in a minimalist setting matched with sleek white shelving as it will with period wood panelling and mahogany furniture.” Seductive setting Transform a bedroom palette with greys in decor or silky fabrics to bring an air of relaxation to an uptight setting. Hang drapery panels which puddle on the floor to frame your windows with a layer of textured sheers behind them for the ultimate in privacy. Grey tones in fabrics and wallpapers create a glamorous and striking effect, especially paired with pattern and texture. It’s a chic, streamlined look which also taps into the five-star ‘hotel’ trend which will be very evident in interiors this autumn. If passion for the look is running high, dress a bed appropriately in shades of grey bedlinen. Simple luxury touches are essential such as rugs and lighting.

T
echnology plays an increasingly vital role in all our lives. Whether we’re writing emails to friends, doing a spot of research into family history, or running a busy small business, not much gets done without the help of a computer and an internet connection. So it can be incredibly frustrating – even disastrous – when it all goes wrong. Often it is difficult to know what to do and where to turn for help. Until now, solving computer and technology issues could be expensive and confusing. However, a new service launched this summer is determined to change that. Student@Home is a call-out service that provides expert tuition and technology support for homes and small businesses. Offering an innovative and affordable solution to all those computer problems, it is delivered by a team of talented and friendly IT students from the top computer science courses in London. The idea originated in the Netherlands, and has been brought to the UK by young social entrepreneur Kelly Klein. Hearing about Studentaanhuis.nl, based in the Netherlands, Kelly was intrigued by their unique concept of using top-notch students to deliver quality, value for money IT support – and so she decided to explore it further.
“All of this makes my daily life so much easier. I don’t know how I went without the internet for so long!” 59 YEAR-OLD PSYCHOLOGIST DORIT DOWLING
Aware of the high unemployment rates, and the number of people who still find technology intimidating, Kelly, who has always has an entrepreneurial spirit, developed this unique concept to deliver a much needed service in London.
It’s not just individuals like Dorit who can access the Student@ Home service. Those running small businesses at home or in offices will know only too well how critical their IT is, and what a challenge it can be to find help when it goes wrong or when they don’t understand how to make best use of the technology they have.
“A lot of technology and computer support is expensive and inaccessible,” says Kelly. “At the same time there is a pool of gifted IT students out there struggling to get work experience. We’re taking two problems here and making them into solutions. We’re creating jobs for these students and a cost efficient, knowledgeable and friendly service for customers.”
“Working with small businesses is really important for us,” says Kelly. “Small businesses are often the life-blood of local communities and we want to support them as much as possible. It’s also fantastic for our students, who gain great experience for when they graduate and want to use this to forge their future in the world of employment.”
Dorit Dowling, a 59 year-old psychologist from Hammersmith, recently used Student@Home. Before accessing the service, Dorit had never even turned a computer on. Now, she is more in touch with family members and is also taking advantage of benefits such as online shopping. “The student was really friendly and supportive,” says Dorit. “Katie came to my house and in a few sessions she taught me how to use the internet and Skype.”
Upon graduation many students struggle to get their foot on the employment ladder due to a lack of work experience. Student@ Home aims to provide students with the relevant experience necessary to help them gain sustainable, long-term employment after university, while helping the community at the same time.
Dorit adds: “Being able to use the internet means I am able to stay connected with my family overseas. I’m starting to learn about social media and online shopping, all of this makes my daily life so much easier. I don’t know how I went without the internet for so long!”
Katie Pemberton, now in her second year studying computing at Roehampton University, is aware of this pressure. Katie says: “I’m studying to be a web developer and until now, like so many other computer students, I’ve found it really hard to get any kind of IT work experience. Working for Student@Home is great because I get to put my knowledge to good use, solving lots of different problems. And helping people like Dorit makes me feel like I’m making a difference. I am excited to see what computing challenges I will face in the future.”

n May 1968, Sonia Rykiel founded her fashion label and opened her first boutique in Rue de Grenelle, on the Left Bank in Paris. She transformed the sweater into her signature item and was appointed the fashion world’s “Queen of Knitwear” by Women’s Wear Daily magazine in 1970. In quick succession Sonia invented inside-out stitching, no-hem, and ‘unlined’ pieces that reflected a brand new philosophy : ‘la démode’, or ‘un-fashion’. She believes in a total-look adapted to a woman’s individual personality and creates a unique style that is recognized the world over whose key motifs are black, stripes, lace, crystals and written messages.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE HOME IN BRITAIN AT A PRINCELY SUM OF £300 MILLION The former residence of a Saudi crown prince, 2-8a Rutland Gate is thought to be the most expensive home ever marketed in Britain.
T
he land of the super-rich is in London, and in one highly exclusive corner of it, a discreet address just to the south of Hyde Park – a prestigious property is seeking buyers, at an asking price of £300m. Overlooking the park, seven storeys and an astonishing 45 bedrooms, the property would make an appealing pied-à-terre for an invester with deep pockets. The 60,000 sq ft on offer is only slightly smaller than the playing surface of a football pitch. Those wanting to have a look round will be disappointed, however. The house is not for sale on the open market; instead, it is being offered discreetly by a number of agents to a very select handful of potential purchasers with a third of a billion to spare. The mansion, originally built as four family homes until being converted into one dwelling, was formerly the London residence of Rafiq Hariri, the billionaire former prime minister of Lebanon, until his assassination in 2005 in a Beirut car bomb. Following his death, the Financial Times reported, it was made over to Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, thanks to Hariri’s close personal and business ties to the Saudi royal family. The prince died in October last year. Even considering its luxurious specifications, the property is rumoured to include a swimming pool, vast kitchen and lavish interior decor incorporating millions of pounds worth of gold leaf – the asking price of £300m is unprecedented, dwarfing the £140m paid last year by Russian banker Andrey Borodin for Park Place near Henley, previously Britain’s most expensive house. The penthouse suite at One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge, the flagship development of the Candy brothers, had previously sold for £136m.

So would be interested in a property whose stamp duty alone will come to £21m? “The list of people who can afford it would be very brief, and will be on the Forbes 500 list,” said the property expert Henry Pryor. “The person who buys it will be looking for the opportunity to have one of the best addresses in London – it’s a trophy rather than an investment.” Britain’s economy may be slow, but the continuing demand at the very top of the housing market continues to drive up average London prices, even as the rest of the country shows no sign of reanimation. Overseas cash buyers helped push the capital’s sale prices up 6.5% in the 12 months to July 2012, according to Land Registry figures, compared with 0.3% nationally. In that month alone, the last for which figures are available, 34 properties were registered as selling for more than £5m. The most expensive of them, in Farm St, Belgravia, changed hands for £28,134,500. Oliver Hooper of the purchasing agency Huntly Hooper said the Hyde Park property “is one of London’s most unique residences and really only comparable to two others” – Bridgewater House, a Victorian mansion next to St James’s Palace, and Dudley House in Mayfair, both owned by foreign billionaires. As they are not for sale, Hooper said, “I suspect this will be the only chance to get a house of this size in the area for a good number of years. Properties like these are in such short supply that for them to become available for purchase is a very rare opportunity. I suspect the buyer will be foreign and the purchase of it kept very confidential.”
