he annual IMG Challenger World event, set in London’s Docklands, sees over 13,000 participants swim, cycle and run around a specially designed course that winds through some of London’s most famous landmarks such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge and the London Eye. In the lead up to the event, Virgin Active as it’s new sponsor, will be launching a series of triathlon related fitness products and will be helping its participating members to train and prepare. They will also be offering a large quantity of highly sought after event places for members. continue this journey. 2011 will be the 15th year of the London Triathlon and we have the ideal partner to help the many thousands of participants from across the UK and internationally get ready for the world’s largest triathlon.” Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson added:

“The Virgin Active London Triathlon is set to be not only a really fun event, but also a great way for people of all fitness levels to get involved in sport and exercise. Virgin Active will of course be helping me and their members, many of who have signed up alongside me, shape up for

the big day. I hope they don’t show me up too much! Following on from the marathon, it will be a chance for me to take on my children - Holly and Sam - who I’m sure will be keen as ever to beat their dad! Not sure butterfly wings will work on a bicycle though - I’ll have to get more creative!” Team Virgin Active is made up of the original Sporty Spice, Melanie C, JLS singer Oritse Williams and TV presenters Stacey Solomon, Jeff Brazier and Vernon Kay. Dancing on Ice stars Chloe Madeley and Sam Attwater will be joined by model Nell McAndrew, actresses Olivia Hallinan, Tameka Empson and Charlie Brooks as well as ex-Busted star Matt Willis. Singer Michelle Heaton, 2010 Apprentice runner up Liz Locke and 71 Degrees North stars Marcus Patric complete the team. Time to add to your collection?

On the 18th July 2011 Fellows auctioneers will be holding one of the largest auctions of vintage and modern wrist watches this year.

A

uctioning off over 600 vintage and modern wrist watches, including specialist pieces from Rolex, Omega, Cartier and Patek Philippe, there are plenty of opportunities to add to your collection. There is however, one exceptional lot, this 1969 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, the ‘Paul Newman Daytona’ estimated at £30,000 - £40,000. Described as ‘the vintage sports watch to own’, this Paul Newman Daytona is one of the original early models and has the unique and highly sought after black and cream exotic dial. In the 1960’s Rolex gave its chronograph model a major facelift, introducing the Rolex Cosmograph. With its accuracy and unique ability to calculate the average lap speed of racing cars, the 1961 Rolex Cosmograph became known as the Daytona through its association with racing and the great track. Paul Newman’s affiliation with the Rolex Daytona began with his appearance in the 1969 Indy Car racing film Winning in which he appeared to wear the model. Although Newman himself does not recall wearing this 10 J U N E 2 0 1 1

specific Daytona in the motion picture, his 1973 appearance on the front cover of Italian magazine Moda, wearing what again appeared to be a Rolex Daytona, only went further in cementing his association with the model. Indeed, Paul Newman himself identifies that his appearance in Moda magazine may have been the catalyst for his lifetime association with the Daytona Model. With a love affair stemming from his role in the film Winning, Newman’s racing career began in 1972 and he made his first real public

connection with the Rolex Daytona when his wife Joanne Woodward bought him a Rolex Daytona with the inscription ‘Drive Slowly, Joanne’ on its case. Upon stepping into the racing car Newman became a supreme driver. In 1995 Newman won the GT1 Class in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and in doing so was presented with a new Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, featuring the inscription, ‘Rolex 24H at Daytona, Paul Newman, Rolex Motorsport Man of the Year, 1995’. His ability as a driver and love for the sport even gained acclaim

from champion racing driver Mario Andretti describing Newman as ‘one of us.’ Interestingly, unlike more modern actors and celebrities, although Newman wore this Rolex Daytona model for over 30 years, he never officially endorsed the model or publically endorsed Rolex as a brand. Thus, the term ‘Paul Newman Daytona’ was adopted by collectors and enthusiasts and has never been officially used by Rolex. Nevertheless, as a result of Paul Newman’s dedication to his career, his love for racing and indirect contribution to the legacy of Rolex the Paul Newman Stainless Steel Cosmograph Daytona is considered to be ‘the holy grail’ for serious watch collectors. For any further information on the vintage and modern wrist watches available in this auction then visit www.fellows. co.uk or alternatively call 0121 212 5506. Motcomb Street, Belgravia Summer Party 3.30pm, Household Cavalry musical procession. 5.30pm onwards, the party begins!

O

n Wednesday 6th July 2011, the beautiful cobbled Motcomb Street, part of Grosvenor’s Belgravia estate, will once again be transformed for the annual street party. This yearly Belgravia affair has become a landmark event in the London summer diary, with last year’s party raising a staggering £44,000 as some 4,000 revellers joined comedian Harry Hill, over 50 members of the Household Cavalry and an army of horses to raise funds for two very worthy charitable causes. This year’s party is shaping up to be better than ever, and will be raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Household Cavalry Operational Casualties Fund. Kicking off the evening’s festivities, a mounted Household Cavalry procession will draw crowds and set the scene for an evening of fun and frivolity. Later in the evening a number of fantastic tribute acts will take to the openair stage including George Michael, Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart & The Faces whilst street entertainers will be showcasing everything from 16 J U N E 2 0 1 1

magic and sorcery to amusing showbiz impersonations. The eagerly-anticipated ‘Tree of Life’ (bedecked with mystery envelopes ranging in value from £5 to £800) and auction will include prizes from some of the most illustrious brands on the street. One of the stellar lots is a day of Motcomb Street pampering for two including breakfast at Patisserie Valerie, an indulgent morning of hair and beauty treatments at Daniel Galvin Jnr and Glow Urban Spa, a Pierre Herme chocolate and macaroon tasting, lunch at The Pantechnicon and a Motcombs bottle of champagne to take home. Alongside this, eager bidders are also in with a chance to win a day’s golf for four at the RAC Golf and Country Club, a shooting lesson and lunch with professional gunsmith Ray Ward, a day of hair and beauty at Gianni & Claudie, an exclusive dinner for eight at Motcombs Private Townhouse, a weekend stay at the Hyatt (including dinner for two at Mosimann’s Private Dining Room) and a fabulous trip for two to Dubai.

Motcomb Street is widely renowned for its fashion, art, beauty, luxurious interiors, gourmet restaurants and specialist food shops - many of which will be opening their doors late into the evening especially for the occasion. Meanwhile, party-goers can indulge in a delicious array of food and drink from one of the many stalls lining the street, including those from The Halkin, The Pantechnicon, the Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel and holders of a Royal Warrant, Waitrose. With a celebrity opening soon to be announced, why not join the residents and retailers of Belgravia to celebrate the glorious British summertime in the heart of this beautiful neighbourhood. Phillip Lawless, Chairman of the Street Party Committee comments: ‘Following the success of last year we are very much looking forward to welcoming visitors to the street once again for a fantastic evening’s celebrations which is a great fundraiser for two very worthwhile charitable causes.’John Clark, Director North Belgravia adds: ‘Grosvenor is thrilled to be supporting this year’s Motcomb Street Party and all the outstanding retailers that line the street. Motcomb

Street is a charming street with a real community atmosphere - this year’s party is set to be a real celebration.’ On entering the event, visitors will be asked to make a small donation to support the charities involved. Further information can be found at www.motcombstreetparty.co.uk. Motcomb Street Tucked away behind bustling Knightsbridge and Sloane Street, in the heart of Belgravia, lies this beautiful, bijou cobbled street. Over the last few years, many fine brands and unique specialist shops have opened here and in the surrounding mews and courtyards, adding further vibrancy to the Belgravia neighbourhood. Belgravia is one of London’s most vibrant and prestigious destinations - with cutting edge luxury fashion, refreshing open spaces, gourmet restaurants, grand Georgian architecture and timeless buildings to explore. The people, products, specialist knowledge, heritage and incredibly beautiful environment make Belgravia hard to beat. It maintains a neighbourhood atmosphere despite the 300 thriving, eclectic businesses that nestle in the area across its three main shopping streets of Elizabeth Street, Motcomb Street and Pimlico Road.

From the Royal Academy

an you imagine a mere 150 years ago, it was considered too shocking for women to display their artwork in London. Those who dared used pseudonyms, such was the potential scandal. The Society of Women Artists has travelled a fascinating and exciting road since a few rebellious women formed their own society in 1857. The Society enjoyed public attention from the start, from both indulgent curiosity and the support of well chosen Patrons who gave prestige and generous backing to the pioneer artists. In 1865, Royal Patronage followed and continues to this day, through HRH Princess Michael of Kent who will be opening the exhibition at the private view event on Wednesday 29th June. Since these early days the society has grown into a highly competitive forum for women artists, and is constantly developing as a diverse and forward looking organisation. This year, celebrates the 150th annual exhibition at the splendidly refurbished Mall Galleries where you can view the stunning and eclectic mix of artwork. Members together with talented non-members will

18 J U N E 2 0 1 1

be showcasing paintings in all mediums, sculptures, original prints, miniatures, etchings and ceramics. The SWA specifically encourages Young Artists. Last year a young Ukrainian prize-winner created a amazing buzz across Russian and Ukrainian media culminating in an interesting TV documentary news item on our Society. RETROSPECTIVE

In celebration of this important milestone in the society’s history, they are showing a retrospective of works from many of the prominent women artists who have played a pivotal role in the society. The President Barbara Penketh Simpson has acted as curator of this special exhibition featuring amongst others, the famous Royal Academicians – Dames Laura Knight, Elizabeth Frink and Elizabeth Butler. We have to thank the Tate Gallery, Private and Public collections for this wonderful addition to our general exhibition. The exhibition will also feature work from our esteemed honorary members including portraiture from June Mendoza OBE and Daphne Todd OBE.

2011 Wimbledon 20th June - 3rd

Championships Wimbledon 2011 will see the finest players from over 60 countries compete in the five main Championships events. In the second week of the Tournament, these players will be joined by Juniors, Veteran and Wheelchair competitors, playing in their own events on the Championships’ lawns.

S

ince the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon.

In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally called Sphairistike, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship. The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s

J U N E 2 0 1 1 33

London EVENTS Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final. The lawns at the Ground were arranged in such a way that the principal court was situated in the middle with the others arranged around it; hence the title ‘Centre Court’, which was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road opened by King George V. The foresight of building the present stadium, designed to hold 14,000 people, did more to popularise the game worldwide than anything that has happened to date. However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the Centre Court was once more at the centre of the tournament. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description. By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since. Enter the Ladies

In 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles was started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883. Overseas Champions

By the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and in 1905 May Sutton of the United States became the first Champion from overseas when she won the Ladies’ Singles. She repeated her success in 1907, the year when Norman Brookes of Australia became the first Gentlemen’s Singles champion from overseas. Since that year, only two players from Great Britain, Arthur Gore and Fred Perry, have managed to win the Men’s Singles while there have been five British Ladies’ Champions since Wimbledon moved to Church Road — Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer, Ann Jones and Virginia Wade. Wartime Wimbledon

During the Second World War the Club managed to remain open despite a severe curtailment of staff. The premises were used for a variety of civil defence and military functions such as fire and ambulance services, Home Guard and a decontamination unit. Troops stationed within the vicinity were allowed to use the main concourse for drilling. Another familiar sight around the ground was a small farmyard consisting of pigs, hens, geese, rabbits, etc. In October 1940 a ‘stick’ of five 500lb bombs struck Centre Court, resulting in the loss of 1,200 seats. With the war in Europe over, signs of normality began to return to Wimbledon during June and July 1945, when a series of matches between Allied servicemen took place on the old No. 1 Court, which had escaped enemy action. Early in 1946 the 34 J U N E 2 0 1 1

decision was taken to resume The Championships that summer. In more recent years long-standing records have been broken. In 1980 Bjorn Borg of Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in the post-challenge round era; a feat replicated by Roger Federer between 2003 and 2007. In 1985 Boris Becker, aged 17, became the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. In 1987 Martina Navratilova of the United States became the first player to win the Ladies’ Singles six times in succession and in 1990 she attained the all-time record of nine victories in the event. Pete Sampras of the United States registered his seventh win in 2000 and in 2001, Goran Ivanisevic became the first wildcard to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year

The Championships 2011 may prove to be the domain of a

Rafael Nadal triumph, a Kim Clijsters slice of history, the return of Roger Federer, or another rising star, but this year’s Wimbledon will also herald the opening of a new Show Court at the Church Road grounds in the form of the new Court 3. “We are delighted to welcome a fantastic facility in the new Court 3, giving us four great stadium courts to play tennis in, all with Hawk-Eye electronic line calling” commented Championships Referee Andrew Jarrett. The 2,000-seater construction has been built on the site of the old Court 2, ‘the graveyard of Champions’, and is nestled to the south of the Players’ balconies. The design of the new Court 3 is very similar to that of Court 2, opened by the Duke of Kent in 2009. An unfurling concrete flower bowl, Court 3 is fitted with the new and improved padded green seats that feature on Centre Court and Court 2, and, with its high walls and enclosed setting, not to mention Hawk-Eye capabilities, is sure to provide an excellent atmosphere for both players and public. “In fact, if you stand by Court 9, there is an optical illusion,” explains Jarrett. “Court 3 looks bigger than Court 2, even though Court 2 is twice the size, 4,000 seats, because it is sunk into the ground.” There is of course another new court to be opened this summer, Court 4, which sits directly underneath the umbrella of Court 3. Like its bigger brother, Court 4 is in full view of both the Player Areas and also the Members balcony, making it another prime location for spectators. Court 3 will be officially opened by the Duke of Kent, President of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, ahead of the first scheduled match on Monday 20 June, the first day of The Championships. The Duke will perform the coin toss for the opening match, and unveil a commemorative plaque. The grounds will open at 10:30am each day. On Courts 2–19 play is provisionally scheduled to start at noon for at least the first eight days and then at 11am for the Junior matches on the middle Saturday and during the second week. On Centre and No.1 Courts play will start at 1pm, except on the final two days when play on these courts will start at 2pm. Please check the daily order of play.

Simply Black + White An exhibition of black and white photography from four established contemporary artists is the latest show to be organised by Katherine Maginnis Ltd, a London based arts agency. The exhibition, entitled Black + White, takes place at Wimbledon Fine Art Gallery in Wimbledon Village from June 19th to June 26th 2011, and features various photographic styles including reportage, portraiture, art photography and a series of ‘Living Portraits’. The artists on show include Patrick Jackson, James Dean Diamond, Arnhel de Serra and Doublehead, all who have exhibited in New York, Europe and London and whose work features in private collections internationally. Several of the artists also have work in the permanent collection at London’s National Portrait Gallery. Patrick Jackson has worked in advertising and fashion editorial photography for over 20 years. His work on show at the Black + White exhibition includes Sir Anthony Hopkins photographed at the National Theatre, London in 1985 and Yves Saint Laurent photographed at his desk in Paris in 1994. A series of portraits from Jackson’s private collection are on show and on sale for the first time. In James Dean Diamond’s dark, gothic imagery he mixes fantasy and escapism to produce epic works with both cinematic and theatrical influences. The images featured in the Black + White show of unidentifiable geographical locations are equally impressive and unnerving. Sought-after reportage photographer Arnhel de Serra is well-known for his careful, empathetic observations of ordinary people in their everyday surroundings. His clients include, amongst others, The National Trust, Saatchi and Saatchi and The Guardian newspaper. He has three images in the permanent collection of The National Portrait Gallery. Doublehead is duo Milivoj Ilic and Chris Springhall who together have developed the concept of ‘Living Portraits’ by applying the conventions of painting and stills photography into a moving format. The installation featured in the Black + White exhibition has been created from black and white video of enigmatic female faces and has previously been shown at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts. The installation will be screened on a BeoVision 10-40 plasma screen TV sponsored by Bang & Olufsen of Wimbledon Village. Milivoj Ilic solo work has also featured on BBC’s The Jonathan Ross Show and Channel 4’s Grand Designs.

London in Full Bloom! CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2011 HIGHLIGHTS

J U N E 2 0 1 1 39

London EVENTS

T

he Chelsea Flower show is one of the most famous flower shows in the world, put on each year by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. It is the garden design equivalent of a catwalk at a fashion show. The flower show sold out in record time this year, as the UK’s love affair with gardening shows no sign of dimming. Year on year, garden designers at the Chelsea Flower Show are expected to put on a novel show, and this year certainly did not disappoint. The talking point this year has to be Diarmuid Gavin’s hanging, Irish Sky Garden, with its pink planted pod suspended high above the ground, overlooking his inspired horticultural creation. Glad to report that finally, the man whom is often wrongly overlooked in terms of metallic praise, finally managed to bag a well deserved Gold for his ingenious creation. It is inspired by Dublin animator Richie Baneham who created the visual effects work in Avatar and by the concept of Restaurant in the Sky where people dine sitting around a table hanging from the arm of a crane. In terms of sheer originality, none can top Diarmuid. Nonetheless, most of the show gardens showed off interesting novel design ideas, such as planted walls, and the odd luxury swimming pool, common to most Monaco backyards. The latter, certainly of appeal to the increasingly hot, sun drenched Chelsea punters, eagerly pushing forward through the crowds, to catch a glimpse of the horticultural extravaganza. The show gardens always dominate the media headlines, though it is often noted it is the Great Pavilion that represents true Chelsea. The skill of nurseries exhibit to such a high standard, with such attention to detail irrespective of the respective natural flowering seasons. The exhibits ranged from a modern take on a kitchen garden, a plot with the largest trees ever to be brought in to Chelsea framing a working water mill, to gardens which evoke1940s Wales or renewable power and even a Korean entry which makes a toilet the central feature. It may seem unusual, but the traditional Korean belief that emptying your body also means cleansing your mind has led to it becoming the centrepiece. Even the pathway to the toilet is significant, as the process of emptying your mind starts with the walk through the centre of the peaceful garden. Jihae Hwang, who is believed to be the first South Korean garden designer to exhibit at Chelsea, described the gardens as a personal quest for relaxation. She said: ‘I wanted the audience to feel that they are stress free and when they see the garden they want to empty their minds of worries. Elsewhere, floral displays include the annual Florist of the Year competition in which entrants have designed floral jockey silks, while a £70,000, 11ft 6in high sculpture of a cypress tree covered in 23.5 carat gold dominates the grand pavilion of the show. Crowds were gathering to catch a small glimpse of Saint Alan Titchmarch in the TV tower. According to one of the fruit growers exhibiting in the Great Pavilion, just one squeak from the man about a certain plant, makes the cash registers rattle with rage! HRH Queen Elizabeth II made her annual pilgrimage to check out the latest floral creations on VIP Day. Other members of the royal family in attendance were Prince Philip, the Duke of York and his daughter Princess Beatrice (fresh from auctioning off her striking wedding day fascinator hat on eBay), as well 40 J U N E 2 0 1 1

as the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Celebrities in attendance included Gwyneth Paltrow, who was busy promoting her new cookery book ‘Notes From My Kitchen Table’ at B&Q’s show garden. The collaboration focused on ‘growing your own’ food and Gwyneth fittingly posed in front of the tallest structure ever at Chelsea - a glass tower block-like building complete with window boxes full of vegetables. Veteran actress Vanessa Redgrave attended the event with her daughter Joely Richardson, who organised the launch of a rose named after her late sister Natasha. The UK-grown rose, which will be sold exclusively at Dobbies Garden Centres around the UK, aims to raise £10,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, the charity which grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. Her mother Vanessa said: ‘Natasha’s family, her husband and her boys, are so happy that the Natasha Richardson rose was on view to rose lovers at Chelsea Flower Show. Joely added: ‘Natasha was a keen gardener and would be honoured to have a rose created in her memory. Pink was her favourite colour and so we chose this particular rose which is incredibly

feminine and joyous, it captures her extreme vitality.’ Dame Helen Mirren attended to give her name to a new plant in aid of charity. The Nepenthes Helen is a carnivorous jungle plant that eats rats. There was the shoe designer Jimmy Choo, bubbly Barbara Windsor and members of the boy band JLS, throwing themselves good naturedly into the floral arranging competition with only one brief lesson beforehand. Winners of The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011 are announced!

Four types of awards - Gold Flora, Silver-Gilt Flora, Silver Flora, and Bronze Flora - are given in various horticultural categories, including Best Show Garden, Best City Garden, Best Chic Garden, and Best Courtyard Garden, among others. Despite the challenging warm and dry weather conditions throughout April and May, exhibitors excelled in both planting and design, with the world class growers and exhibitors in the Great Pavilion amassing over fifty gold medals in total. ✱ The Daily Telegraph Garden, designed by Cleve West, was awarded gold and has been given the accolade of Best Show Garden. This is a stunning hat trick of Best in Show awards for The Daily Telegraph. ✱ Among the gold winning highlights, Diarmuid Gavin achieved his first gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for his Irish Sky Garden. The judging panel awarded a total of eight gold medals, five silver - gilt flora medals and silver flora medals in the show garden category. ✱ In the Urban Garden category, eight gardens were awarded medals - three gold; four silver-gilt and two silver medals. BBC PROMS.. LY FRIDAY 15TH JU SEPT 2011 TH 10 SATURDAY

T

his is the 117th year of the Proms and still it remains true to its original aim: to present the widest possible range of music, performed to the highest standards, to large audiences.

In the Beginning

The first Proms concert took place on 10 August 1895 and was the brainchild of the impresario Robert Newman, manager of the newly built Queen’s Hall in London. While Newman had previously organised symphony orchestra concerts at the hall, his aim was to reach a wider audience by offering more popular programmes, adopting a less formal promenade arrangement, and keeping ticket prices low. The Early Days

The series was known as ‘Mr Robert Newman’s Promenade Concerts’ and the programmes were perhaps over-generous by today’s standards, lasting around three hours. The informal atmosphere was encouraged by cheap tickets - one shilling (5p) for a single concert, or a guinea (£1.05) for a season ticket. Born in 1869, Henry Wood had undergone a thorough musical training and, from his teens, began to make a name for himself as an organist, accompanist, vocal coach and conductor of choirs, orchestras and amateur opera companies. Wood and Newman were keen to introduce audiences to an ever wider range of music. In the first seasons, a tradition 46 J U N E 2 0 1 1

was established of a Wagner Night on Mondays and a Beethoven Night on Fridays. Wood continued to present an enterprising mixture of the familiar and the adventurous, programming new works each season (referred to as ‘novelties’. By 1920 Wood had introduced to the Proms many of the leading composers of the day, including Richard Strauss, Debussy, Rakhmaninov, Ravel and Vaughan Williams. But the Proms were running at a loss, and in 1927 Chappell’s announced its withdrawal of financial support. In the same year the BBC had established its status as a Corporation with a mandate ‘to inform, educate and entertain’ clearly a vision that Henry Wood held for the Proms. The BBC took over the Proms, and for three years the concerts were given by ‘Sir Henry Wood and his Symphony Orchestra’, until the BBC Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1930. The Proms now reached a far wider audience and although some feared that broadcasting would reduce audience numbers, Wood emphasised its role in achieving his aim ‘of truly democratising the message of music, and making its beneficent effect universal’. Three days after Britain declared war on Germany, the BBC decentralised its Music Department and announced that it was unable to support the Proms. With characteristic determination Wood found private sponsorship for the 1940 and 1941 seasons, and replaced the BBC orchestra with the London Symphony Orchestra. But air-raids intensified and the 1940 season lasted only four weeks. On 10

L ONDON EVENTS May 1941 a Luftwaffe bombardment gutted the Queen’s Hall. The only other hall available in London for orchestral concerts was the Royal Albert Hall, opened in 1871. It was not until the following season that the BBC returned to run and finance the Proms, and have continued to do so ever since. Since 1961 the BBC has commissioned a number of new works each season, offering Proms audiences a chance to hear the latest in musical trends, and creating a unique platform for dozens of contemporary composers. The 1970s brought other new features such as a series of Late Night concerts and Pre-Prom Talks. The 100th Proms season took place in 1994 and the festival now includes over 70 main Prom concerts every year, ever widening the range of symphonic and operatic music presented. The BBC Proms continues to welcome leading international performers whilst showcasing the best of the British music scene, including the BBC’s own orchestras and choirs. The BBC Proms are broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and many are broadcast on BBC television and all broadcasts

Yet although the scope of the Proms has increased enormously since 1895, Henry Wood’s concept for the season remains largely unaltered: to present the widest possible range of music, performed to the highest standards, to large audiences. Promenading in the Royal Albert Hall’s arena continues to be a central feature, lending the Proms its unique, informal atmosphere. Seasoned enthusiast or complete newcomer, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed when faced with the fascinating variety of concerts that make up the BBC Proms 2011 season. There’s something to appeal to everyone, with 74 concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, 12 Chamber Proms at Cadogan Hall plus numerous other special events to choose from. The Proms Plus series incorporates over seventy events talks, films, family events and more. LONDON 60’s WEEK LY 2011

22ND – 31ST JU

54 J U N E 2 0 1 1

ondon 60s Week is London’s only celebration of the decade which rocketed London to the forefront of music, fashion, film & design, and coined the phrase “Swinging London” The 60s was the decade when the youth successfully forged change. For the first time the youth of the day achieved freedom to play the music they wanted and break free from a class system which had total control over all the creative industries. THE HISTORY OF CAMDEN C

amden Town is named after Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden. His earldom was styled after his estate, Camden Place near Chislehurst in Kent, formerly owned by historian William Camden. The name, which appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1822, was later applied to the early twentieth century Camden Town Group of artists and the London borough of Camden, created in 1965. Camden Town stands on land which was once the manor of Kentish Town. Sir Charles Pratt, a radical 18th century lawyer and politician, acquired the manor through marriage. In 1791, he started granting leases for houses to be built in the manor. In 1790 Camden Town was nothing more than a few stray farms and grass. The area stretched from Tottenham Court to Fleet River. In the early 1800s two coaching inns appeared, the first being “Mother Red Cap.” Today, The Edwards is in the exact location of “Mother Red Cap” and is still used as a coaching in. The settlement of the area has always been accredited to Charles Pratt, The Earl of Camden. His interest was developing the east side of Camden. 66 J U N E 2 0 1 1

1850 brought not only mid-century, but the start of the Camden Road Railway. This rail line brought the first Irish settlers to the era who were also eager to develop the area. In 1907 the Camden Underground Railroad opened and made the area accessible from the rest of London. The Underground became a popular way of transportation. After the building of The Underground, the streets of Camden quickly filled with music halls and shops. One of the most historic buildings in Camden Town is the Camden Theatre. This was one of the original places of entertainment, but is known today as the Camden Palace. During World War II London was a target for enemies, and Camden Town was especially a target. Most of the area was badly damaged by bombs especially around Morning Crescent. After the war heavy restoration took place and during this time the area saw a heavy Greek-Cypriot settlement move into the area. Camden Lock, is a twin manually-operated lock on the Regent’s Canal in Camden Town. The locks were constructed between 1818–20 by James Morgan, with John Nash, supervising engineer. It is the only twin-lock remaining on the Canal, the

After the building of The Underground, the streets of Camden quickly filled with music halls and shops. remainder having been modified to single lock operation. The current locks are Grade II listed and replaced an innovative, but unsuccessful, hydropneumatic lock designed by William Congreve in an attempt to conserve water. The lock is to the west of the Camden High Street road bridge, and Camden Lock, on the north side of the canal, at the junction with Chalk Farm Road. The Regent’s Canal runs through the north end of Camden Town. Canalboat trips along the canal from Camden Lock are a popular activity, particularly in the

summer months. Many of the handrails by the bridges show deep marks worn by the towropes by which horses pulled canal barges until the 1950s, and it is still possible to see ramps on the canal bank designed to assist horses which fell in the canal after being startled by the noise of a train. Camden Lock is a regularly-used traditional manuallyoperated double canal lock operating between widely separated levels. The towpath is a pedestrian and cycle route which runs continuously from Little Venice through Camden Lock to the Islington Tunnel. This interesting, leafy borough has a rich literary history, much of it is expensive and considered highly desirable .Many consider it one of the most musical areas in London because it has all the grungiest, popular rock clubs and venues. Walking down the street in Camden Town it is likely you could run into the most popular rock artists of the time. J U N E 2 0 1 1 67

Kensington a history

An elimently salubrious residential and institutional district situated north-west of Chelsea, within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

T

he name Kensington was first recorded in Domesday Book, and probably derives from a Saxon farmer called Cynesige. Despite its exalted reputation, Kensington was a late developer. A few gentlemen’s residences were built in the early 17th Century, of which only two significant examples survive, in complete contrasting forms: Sir Walter Cope’s mansion is now the bombed out shell of Holland House, while Sir George Coppin’s house has grown several times over to become Kensington Palace. In 1685 the developer Thomas Young began to lay out Kensington Square, but long remained an isolated outpost of civilized London amid the fields and gravel pits that covered most of the parish. The joint monarchs William III and Mary II made

Holland Park and the cemetery at West Brompton. Kensington Palace Gardens and The Boltons are still among the most expensive addresses in London, and indeed the world. KENSINGTON GARDENS

A royal park adjoining the west side of Hyde Park, of which it originally formed a part. Around 1605 Sir George Copping, clerk of the Crown to James I, built a house here with 36 acres of grounds. Later known as Nottingham House it was acquired by William III and Mary II in 1689 and remodelled as Kensington Palace. The palace was further extended by George I and has not significantly changed since. George II was the last reigning monarch to reside here and his consort Queen Caroline employed Charles

Using proceeds from the 1851 Great Exhibition, an 88 acre site was acquired on the edge of Brompton, streets were laid out and the first art galleries erecte. Kensington Palace their home in 1689 and it was the favoured residence of their three successors. Queen Victoria was born and raised here but moved to Buckingham Palace on her accession to the throne in 1837. Coincidentally, it was only at this point that property developers began to seriously exploit Kensington’s residential potential: in the 40 years from 1841 the population of the parish increased sixfold. The establishment of the museums and colleges of South Kensington brought added prestige and in the second half of the 19th century the district filled with high-class stuccoed terraces and detached villas. Property developers made up the name ‘West Kensington’ for what had formally been Fulham’s lowly North End; by contrast, North Kensington was a genuine part of the medieval parish but has never been a prestigious locality. Grand exhibition halls were built at Earls Court and Kensington Olympia in the mid 1880s and Kensington High Street became one of the most fashionable shopping centres in the capital. By the end of the century only three green spaces remained: Kensington Gardens, 68 J U N E 2 0 1 1

Bridgeman to lay out Kensington Gardens. Near the boundary with Hyde Park, six pools formed by the River Westbourne were connected to form the Long Water and the Serpentine. The future Queen Victoria was born at Kensington Palace in 1819 and she chose Kensington Gardens as the site for the fabulous Albert Memorial, erected in 1872 to commemorate her late husband’s achievements. A tea pavilion built in 1934 was converted into the Serpentine art gallery in 1970 and has since staged a remarkable number of influential exhibitions for such a small space. A £4million renovation programme was begun under the patronage of Diana, Princess of Wales who lived at Kensington Palace, and was completed in 1998. HIGH STREET KENSINGTON

An exciting shopping street located one mile west of Knightsbridge, and widely referred to as ‘High Street Ken’ Since Kensington’s medieval parish church of St Mary Abbots was rebuilt in the 17th Century, a ribbon village grew up around it and

by the late 1860s the High Street was widen to accommodate the increasing number of transport. The church was rebuilt again and the underground station opened, providing easy access to Victoria and Westminster. Entrepreneurs opened shops that grew to become department stores. The most successful of these was Barkers, which absorbed its main rival Derry and Toms in 1931. Barkers opened the present building at 99 Kensington High Street in 1932. In the last quarter of the 20th Century the street flourished in another direction with allowing quirky boutiques and indoor markets offering better prices and more ‘urban’ styles than could be found in Knightsbridge, which seemed stuffy by comparison. SOUTH KENSINGTON

Using proceeds from the 1851 Great Exhibition, an 88 acre site was acquired on the edge of Brompton, streets were laid out and the first art galleries erecte, which were nicknamed ‘the Brompton Boilers’ for their utilitarian appearance. These were taken down in the 1860s and some rebuilt in Bethnal Green, where they now accommodate the Museum of Childhood. Prince Albert died in 1861 and the Albert Hall was built in his memory, opposite Kensington Gardens. The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK’s most treasured and distinctive buildings, recognisable the world over. Since its opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the

world’s leading artists from every kind of performance genre have appeared on its stage. The Natural History Museum brought the British Museum’s rocks, fossils and skeletons to Cromwell Road in 1881. The Victoria & Albert Museum - originally a museum of manufacturing - was opened in its present form by Edward VII in 1909. The Science Museum followed in 1928. J U N E 2 0 1 1 69

ond Street was named after Sir Thomas Bond, a distinguished Royalist and Comptroller of the Household of Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I. Thomas Bond, together with a syndicate of wealthy merchants and bankers, decided to design a new town. Building began in 1686, before which time Bond Street was a swamp and Piccadilly was a muddy lane running to it. It is hard to imagine now, but the area that is now Old Bond Street was frequented by duelling highwaymen. Sadly, Bond did not see his investment come to fruition, dying a year before its completion. The street at this point ran from Piccadilly to Burlington Gardens. There was not enough money to see through completion of Bond’s original idea, so to the north there was still open country. In 1700 the street was extended to Clifford Street and was named ‘New’ Bond Street to distinguish it from ‘Old’ Bond Street, which had already become inhabited by nobility. It was not until 1721 that the street was finally extended to Oxford Street. Within a few years the reputation of Bond Street grew and it became one of the most fashionable addresses in London. By the middle of the 18th century it had become the meeting place for elegant and fashionable ladies who took their daily strolls there. Shopping was a great preoccupation in the life of London ladies during the eighteenth century, and many were inclined to change their costumes every hour just to stroll up and down Bond Street. At the same time a group known as the Bond Street Loungers also appeared in the street, setting fashions and determining what was and wasn’t ‘acceptable’. They also created a walk known as the Bond Street Roll, which was fashionable at the end of the century.

70 J U N E 2 0 1 1

Georgian Bond Street was a male domain. Its sporting clubs and hotels were frequented exclusively by men. The Bond Street Loungers continued to put in their daily appearances and ladies of fashion could only be decently seen before midday - and then only if accompanied by a chaperone. By 1840 Bond Street was beginning to brim with shops - tailors, milliners, shirtmakers, wine merchants, perfumers, shoe makers, book sellers, butchers, grocers and bakers - which all opened in the hope of vying for business from the gentry living in this fashionable area. In Victorian times many of the shopkeepers still lived above their shops so that they could offer their rich clients service and personal attention twenty four hours a day. Indeed, at this time it was still not possible to buy ready made clothes, other than underwear and blouses. In the early 1900’s, the hours between two o’clock and five o’clock in the afternoon were the unofficial ‘strolling’ time for the fashionable ladies and gentlemen to wander the pavements of Bond Street. During the years there have been many famous inhabitants and visitors to the street. In 1797 Lord Horatio Nelson spent

several painful months recuperating at number 147 New Bond Street following the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, during which his elbow was shattered by a bullet and subsequently his arm was amputated whilst still on board his ship. Other famous residents and visitors to the street include such luminaries as William Pitt the elder, Henry Fielding who wrote part of Tom Jones whilst staying on the street, James Boswell, Sir Walter Scott, Sir David Garrick, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Dr Johnson and Lord Byron. Asprey is Bond Street’s oldest remaining store, Charles Asprey, son of the company’s founder, William Asprey moved the already successful business to its current location at 167 New Bond Street in 1847. A luxury goods brand from its earliest days, Asprey was renowned for its dressing cases and pioneered the more portable styles in leather, ideal for the new style of travel ushered in by railways. In 1902 a Cartier store opened at New Burlington Street, where the daring look of Cartier jewellery caught on amongst the nobility, the ‘Garland’ style was particularly in Vogue at

the time. In 1904 Cartier received its first Royal Warrant from King Edward VII and by 1909 the store moved to 175 New Bond Street, the address which would become world famous as the London headquarters of the jeweller. In 1917 Sotheby’s moved from Wellington Street, where it had been established for a century, to its famous New Bond Street salerooms, where it remains today. The name of Sotheby’s was fundamental in establishing London and Bond Street at the centre of the world art market. Today, the quality of Bond Street has not changed. It has one of the highest numbers of Royal Warrants on a single street but it is by no means staid, with an international reputation for excellence and choice. The street thrives on its reputation for offering exclusive fashion, jewellery, perfume, arts and gifts in stores where customer service is still of paramount importance. And whilst the majority of goods sold in the street are ready made, it is still possible to have products custom made for the individual, from silk shirts to hats and shoes.

Building began in 1686, before which time Bond Street was a swamp and Piccadilly was a muddy lane running to it.

An aquarium that’s simple to set up and easy to look after.

LANDSCAPES & GARDENS

The biOrb FLOW is the simplest of aquariums to set up and look after. Here’s why. Fish waste sinks All biOrbs have a filter at the bottom of the aquarium. It’s where solid waste naturally settles. Put simply, the filter works where there is most to filter. We’ve even made it easy to replace. It takes seconds to do and you only need to change it every four to six weeks. Made from acrylic, not glass Why? Because acrylic is 10 times stronger than glass. In fact acrylic which is just over one inch thick (32mm), is bullet resistant. Built-in LED light It’s so slim you’d be forgiven for not knowing it was there. The biOrb FLOW has an LED light built-in to the lid.

Patio perfect

74 J U N E 2 0 1 1

Summer’s on the way and revamping the patio’s a priority Gabrielle Fagan puts together the best looks for outdoor rooms.

S

ummer’s on the way and revamping the patio’s a priority if you want to take full advantage of sunny days and sultry nights. There’s a superbtchoice of furniture and accessories which could transform even a drab, tiny space - with prices that won’t raise your temperature by turning the bank balance red. Create some patio party razzmatazz with glowin-the-dark furniture and vibrantly coloured gnomes, or be more demure with decorative wired pieces or classic rattan furniture. And for outdoor decor divas there’s the ultra-fashionable ‘outdoor room’ look with swinging cocoon seats, coffee tables and canopied loungers. “Over the years we’ve seen a move away from functional, utilitarian garden furniture as customers demand a lot more from their outside space,” says Nicola Gidlow, outdoor living buyer for John Lewis. “People want a recognisable style, rather than random pieces, and a space which is tailored to their lifestyle and matches their interior taste. “Also, what’s emerging strongly this season is a trend for creating settings which conjure a holiday, exotic atmosphere that probably reflects a trend to ‘staycation’.” Rob Fairhurst, managing director at Outdoor Chic, says patios are fast becoming the new ‘play areas’ for adults. “There’s a strong trend for kitchen/family rooms opening out on to a terrace or garden so the area’s highly visible from the home, and that means people require the setting to have the ‘wow’ factor and be a focal point. “Let’s face it, secretly most people want to turn the neighbours green with envy with a sophisticated ‘outdoor’ room which is as comfortable as a lounge and enhances their property.” If you’re wavering between wood and wire, or wrestling over rattan and wicker, make it simple by checking out perfect patio looks.

Hit the deck

It’s hardly surprising that as an island nation we never tire of coastal style, and it’s sailed in again this season. “Natural wood furniture, crisp blue and white fabrics for cushions and tablecloths and smart navy parasols have a timeless appeal and conjure an easy informality which is just right for relaxing,” says Gidlow. “No matter what the location, it’s easy to mimic that by-the-sea atmosphere with a few seaside accessories, from blue hurricane lamps, to stripey deckchairs and a barbecue bucket.” Hot tropics

Turn up the heat in the garden with exotic florals, spicy hues and light-up furniture that makes a patio an irresistible entertaining space in the evening. “Colour and technology are the big story for patios,” says Rob Fairhurst. “Furniture which incorporates lighting is fun but also highly effective at glamorising even modest patios and adding an extra dimension to the outdoors at night.” Country garden cool

This is a quintessentially British look, redolent of soft green landscapes and the idyllic setting for lazy afternoon teas or sunset cocktails. “While classic squarer shapes will always remain popular, this season will see the re-emergence of the ‘timeless curve’,” says Heather McCann, creative director for specialist company Indian Ocean. “Gentle lines provide a more sympathetic look for an outdoor space, especially in more traditional settings. If you want a different, but still suitable, interpretation, opt for a chic combination of white and wood, which is a key trend this summer.” Luxury lounging

Blur the boundary between the indoors and outdoors with a space that’s furnished with as much care and attention as

a lounge. Ensure it’s stylish by keeping a sharp eye on design as well as comfort. “Al fresco dining is one of the great pleasures of summer,” says George Clarke, design consultant for B&Q. “An area of decking or paving with a pergola over the top will give a sense of enclosure and make it feel like an outdoor room. Zone areas by using structured plants in pots to give instant shape, character and interest.” J U N E 2 0 1 1 75

or my sins I have a Questions and Answers panel on my website, and my goodness you should see the items people take photographs of and send in. Actually of course I am flattered that anybody would go to so much trouble and every item has at least one point of interest and more importantly it is usually part of someone’s family history. But the range is vast, from a doorplate removed from an old continental steam train to a fine piece of English furniture or a hard-paste porcelain ‘fairing’ from Bavaria. Because of the wide variety I thought t you might like to see a sample and the ‘fairing’ seems a good one to start with. The boy and the girl illustrated are late 19th to early 20th century and were made in the south east of Germany where some fifty-seven factories were producing porcelain wares of every conceivable type and quality during the last half of the 19th century and up until the First World War. Many were novelty models, which adorned the shelves of cabinets, mantelpieces and any other available space in the Victorian home. They were often copies of other countries’ products such as nodding-head figures originally from China or Lace Plates from England. I have such a plate with a transfer print

on the front showing a picture of Tring High Street entitled “A Present From Tring” and a mark stamped on the back which says “Made in Austria”. From this alone we know it was made in the 20th century, following the imposition of a tariff in 1890 by Congressman and future President of America William McKinley whereby the name of the country of origin was to be marked on any commodity entering the U.S. The words ‘Made In’ were added after the turn of the century. The smaller, poorer quality figures were popular prizes at fairgounds, hence the name ‘fairing’ but even these are collectable today. Silver hall-marks are notoriously difficult to photograph but the owner of the forks illustrated did a splendid job. There are two or three things we can tell immediately from the photos without any great experience. The shape of the handle is similr to a straight sided

?? | M A RCH I SSU E

violin and is thus known as a “Fiddle Pattern” handle. This did not appear on English silver flatware – the trade name for cutlery – much before the end of the 18th century. But the edge is not plain, it has a line known as a “Thread” around it and the combination is called a “Fiddle and Thread” pattern. A further refinement was the addition of a cast shell at the very end and this type was known as a “Fiddle, Thread and Shell” pattern which is quite difficult to say towards the end of a very good dinner. So from the shape alone we can safely assess the date of these as being not before the 1790’s. Confirmation comes from the hallmarks which tell us that the forks were made of Sterling Standard silver, that is 92.5% pure, in London by GA, generally accepted as the mark of George Angell in 1846. The fifth mark, the head of Queen Victoria is clear to see and indicates that a tax or duty has been. This duty and thus the mark was made redundant in 1891. Continuing with marks, the production of so many new and different commodities and the use of so many new materials during the first half of the 19th century led to the introduction of a Design Registration Mark, the first of which appeared in 1842. This was later to become the registration of a Patent mark. It was in diamond or ‘kite’ form with numbers and letters in the corners surmounted by a numeral denoting the class – ie furniture or silver or ceramics. From these numbers and letters it is possible to trace the day of the month of the year that the design was registered. Not when it was made but the date before which it was unlikely to have been on sale to the public. Thus the pattern of the pair of ‘Christmas’ jugs shown was first

with John Bly

registered on 12th March 1864. The number at the bottom is the parcel number and the initials below are those of the maker, Messrs Corke, Edge & Malkin, Newport Pottery, Burslem, Staffordshire, who were operative between 1860 and 1871. English furniture can rarely be ascribed with a date as accurately as that but with certain clues gleaned from type of timber, construction, use and shape it is usually possible to pin down to a decade or sometimes less. The piece I have chosen here is without doubt late Regency in period. That is 1825 to1835. Although George IV had died in 1830 many of the styles introduced during the latter part of his reign cointinued to dominate the fashionable homes of England. And this piece certainly graced a fashionable house for it is a wine cooler, decorated with the finest cuts of highly figured mahogany and shaped as a sarcophagus, standing on four finely carved lion’s paw feet. The sarcophagus is an ancient shape associated with burial and it became popular during the classical renaissance of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly after Nelson’s body was transported in a coffin so formed at his funeral. Although generally referred to as a wine cooler the correct description would be ‘Cellarette’ because it is enclosed with a hinged and lockable lid, whereas strictly speaking wine coolers are open. However many fine cellarettes have lead linings with a draining hole and plug in the bottom to enable wine to be cooled with ice on specific occassions. Talking of which perhaps you might be kind enough to let me know if an occassional foray into my Q&A bag might be of interest for a future article.

Together with her team of specialists and revolutionary treatments, Tracey devises a complete treatment plan to get that youthful and natural look you are hoping for. Semi-permanent makeup can change your life! Want to change your look, freshen up, look well rested and ultimately look younger? With an arch of the brow your look will be transformed from dated to on-trend and open eyed therefore giving the impression of fresh faced youthfulness. It’s time for a brow re-model. “Semi-permanent make-up has taken a complete turn, gone are the days of the half moon shape slapped above the eye, we have so many different types of fantastic and natural looking ways to enhance your eyebrow shape from fine hair line strokes to simply filling in patchy eyebrows with a shadow effect. I can create a totally realistic and natural arched brow for both men and women!” As you get older the shape of your face changes and it is very important to move with the times, it’s amazing how many women still over pluck their eyebrows into the shape they had in the nineties or even eighties. The area becomes over traumatised therefore making it impossible to achieve that full lush look you had in your 20’s. As the brows are such

of your face and expressions. Semi-permenant makeup is the answer to all your brow dilemma’s Semi-permenant makeup can create a new look, it is so natural they will look like your own LIP LINER

The common procedure most of you know about is the lip liner, which defines the outer lip and gives the impression of a fuller lip as if you were wearing a lip pencil liner. Lip blush is the new lip line! This treatment is fantastic on more mature lips and

anyone who has thin lips and would like a fuller sexy looking lip. As you get older the pigment of the lips fades, with this procedure that youthful blush is restored. The colour of your lip is matched to your complexion and the results are lip transforming! It sounds a little uncomfortable as the entire lip is tattooed, however my specialist Dr Harris applies a dental block so you will be totally pain free. The common question and fear my clients have is “will I get the trout pout?” My answer is emphatically no, no and no again. I concentrate on bringing out your own natural attractiveness and inner beauty, I do not (unless the client is a celebrity and trying to achieve a different look) believe in enforcing an over exaggerated look. I like my clients to achieve an improved and youthful look which is natural and complements their character and lifestyle. Well this should give you plenty to think about, feel like a change and know you need an overhaul. Make a booking today. Until next month, stay well and get ready for the summer! elcome to the first in a series of articles looking at Facial aesthetics from a nursing perspective. Aesthetic medicine is a rapidly growing area, with non-surgical treatments such as muscle relaxant injections, Dermal fillers, light therapy, mesotherapy and face peels to name a few, available to help replace what has been taken away through ageing and the environment. These procedures are no longer sought by just women, with increasing numbers of men also looking for a fresher, younger look. Recent media coverage via the documentary Botox Britain (BBC 3, Thursday 7th April) highlighted the growing trend for injectable treatments and dermal fillers, including the worrying ease of obtaining DIY kits over the internet, and the so-called teen-toxin phenomenon. The documentary quite rightly reinforced the need for those considering nonsurgical cosmetic treatments to seek a reputable provider. This article looks at what regulations are in place for non-surgical cosmetic procedures and what questions you should be asking the healthcare professional before undertaking such procedures. In the UK, only Doctors, Dentists and Nurses registered with the Nursing and midwifery council can administer injectable muscle relaxants and dermal fillers, although there are many reports of individuals without the correct medical training, such as beauticians, running such services. The increasing reports

These procedures are no longer sought by just women, with increasing numbers of men also looking for a fresher, younger look. injectable for the nurse to administer) have concerned healthcare professionals in the cosmetic treatments sector. Until now these services have fallen outside the scope of the Quality care commission and other regulators. The Independent healthcare Advisory Service (www.

independenthealthcare.org. uk) have recently launched a register of injectable cosmetic providers in conjunction with the Government and Department of Health. This involves background screens, and registers Quality Assurance Mark approval to regulated healthcare professionals (doctors, registered nurses and dentists). Aesthetic nursing practitioners are also coming under more pressure. The nursing governing body, Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Royal College of Nursing, advise against ‘remote prescribing’, and say this should be the exception, rather than routine practice. They recommend that individuals undergoing cosmetic injectable treatments should have a face to face review with the prescriber (Doctor, Dentist or independent nurse prescriber) prior to a cosmetic injectable being given, although there is currently no legal requirement for this. In practice this means that aesthetic nurse practitioners are advised either undergo an extensive independent prescribing course, alter their clinical practice, or in extreme circumstances risk potentially losing their nursing registration. Nurse

Independent Prescribers can legally prescribe and administer licensed injectable cosmetics on their own initiative. What questions should you ask prior to your nonsurgical cosmetic treatment? Who will carry out the treatment & are they registered (e.g. GMC for Doctor, NMC for nurse? ✱ How long have they been trained in this treatment & do they have a certificate of accreditation? ✱ How frequently do they carry it out? ✱ Do they have professional indemnity insurance? ✱ Is the treatment painful and if so what form of anaesthesia is used? ✱ Is all equipment used sterile and used only for me? ✱ Will I see a doctor, dentist, or an Independent Nurse Prescriber and will he/she prescribe the cosmetic injectable? ✱ What are the risks involved? ✱ Do you have any ‘before and after’ photographs that I can see? ✱ What type of aftercare regime will I need after treatment? ✱ Will I be reviewed after the treatment – and is this included in the price ✱ What will happen if I am unhappy with any aspect of the treatment?

s summer approaches and we start to plan our holidays, Dr Ariel Haus offers insight into essential care for those longer hours of exposure to the sun. Dr Ariel Haus is also delighted to introduce a new combined treatment; The Rio Look treatment which has been designed to refresh the skin and overall complexion combining a light skin peel & a session of VelaShape to start the elimination of cellulite. In no time the face and rest of body will be glowing in the sunshine, by the pool or sea. Dr Haus performs a selection of skin peels designed for different types of skin. The tiny particles of dead skin are then vacuumed away with the crystals, improving skin clarity, minimising blocked pores and creating a glowing effect. Microdermabrasion is an excellent procedure for freshening the skin. Dr Ariel Haus offers the following advice on the importance of Vitamin D and also how to keep levels of vitamin D high and safe; “As everybody knows, Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is vital for strong bones and a healthy immune system. Deficiency of vitamin D is associated with bone softening in adults, rickets in children and, more recently, with high blood pressure, arthritis, type I diabetes and certain cancers. There is quite a lot of differing opinion about whether by using high SPF creams and thereby protecting ourselves from potentially harmful skin cancers, that we may be risking increased illness as a result of vitamin D deficiency. I do not believe this to be the case. While UV radiation is one source of vitamin D, I do not consider it to be the best source because the benefits of obtaining vitamin D through UV exposure cannot be separated from an increased risk of skin cancer. UV radiation is the most preventable risk factor

for the development of skin cancer and that should be the primary concern of any doctor or person who is concerned about reducing their own risk of developing skin cancer.“ A healthy diet and knowledge of what sunscreen suits what skin are also vital elements in maintaining awareness and best practice when under those rays, Dr Ariel Haus continues; “Provided that you follow a healthy diet that includes foods naturally rich in vitamin D (e.g., dairy products and fish), foods/beverages fortified with vitamin D (e.g., fortified milk and fortified cereals), and/ or vitamin D supplements then your body will absorb an adequate amount of vitamin D to protect you from illness associated with a lack of vitamin D.

However in considering the right sunscreen to look for it is important to keep in mind that what makes sunscreens different is the level of protection from UV exposure that they provide. A common misconception is that the higher the SPF the better the protection offered. The sun contains both UVA rays (which pass through window glass, penetrate into the deepest layer of the skin and are associated with premature aging and melanoma) and UVB rays (the sun’s burning rays, which are blocked by window glass, but are the primary cause of sunburn, and also are linked with skin cancer). It is important that any sunscreen provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays but the SPF number on sunscreens

only reflects the product’s ability to deflect the sun’s burning rays (or UVB). Sunscreens labelled broad-spectrum provide coverage against both UVA and UVB light. Dr Haus recommends Anthelios from La Roche Posay and Capital Soleil from Vichy. Dr Ariel Haus is registered as a medical practitioner in Brazil, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The specific noninvasive cosmetic treatments that Dr. Haus offers are: l Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and also to rejuvenate the skin l Treatments to address wrinkles and frown lines l Dermal fillers (bioplasty and Restylane SUBQ) to smooth out deeper wrinkles and lines l Skin treatments, rejuvenation and hair removal using eMax laser l Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with Velashape, the latest technology to achieve non-surgical liposuction. In addition to his private clinic in Harley Street, London, Dr. Haus also works in the NHS and by arrangement is also able to see patients in Rio de Janeiro. Dr Ariel Haus only uses non-invasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States. The Rio Look treatment is priced from £199.00 (includes 2 VelaShape sessions on stomach or thighs or both and 1 skin peel) www.drhausdermatology.com & http://drarielhaus.blogspot.com 10 Harley Street, London W1G 9PF 020 7467 1525

Dr Haus has regular columns in UK magazines and is often consulted by manufacturers of leading skin products and brands to offer insight and his opinion owing to his extensive experience.

the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw. The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast. In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this. In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw. If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma. What if the pieces don’t quite fit and the picture (diagnosis) is not initially obvious (the triple assessment is then said to be discordant)? For example, in a 50 year old lady a lump may feel like a benign nodular area but look odd on an ultrasound with a normal mammogram. In this case another piece of the jigsaw may be needed, such as an MRI scan or even, occasionally an operation to remove an area for full examination under the microscope. An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thorough investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

Cheryl Cole should actually be on top of the world right now, a new survey has discovered she has the body most women covet.

New survey reveals that

has the body most women want!

A

new survey conducted by Liberate, the UK’s largest network of BAAPS* and/ or BAPRAS**-accredited cosmetic surgeons, reveals that Cheryl Cole has the body that most women want! Liberate, which has over 60 locations across the UK, surveyed 3000 women between the ages of 18-34 and found that just fewer than 30% of

women would most like their body to look like Cheryl Cole. PussyCat Doll’s Nicole Scherzinger was in second place (19%) and Angelina Jolie & Rhianna tied in third place with 15% of the vote for the most desirable female celebrity body. Although recently voted by People Magazine US as the world’s most beautiful woman, surprisingly Jennifer

Lopez received only 10% of the vote and Victoria Beckham only 4%. The survey also found that 30% of women had undergone cosmetic surgery with breast augmentation (“boob job”) being the most popular procedure (28%) followed by Nose (17%) eyes (11%) and Liposuction/ tummy tuck (15%). Half the women surveyed

would have cosmetic surgery if cost was no object but only a small percentage (17%) would take out a loan to cover this. The Liberate survey also highlights the need for women to be better informed of the dangers of cosmetic surgery abroad or in the wrong hands. Despite recent deaths following botched surgery abroad, a staggering 40% admitted that they would consider having surgery abroad if it was cheaper. Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon Mr Jonathan Staiano, Liberate, remarked: ‘Cosmetic surgery is a field in which there are many practitioners who rely on glossy marketing and promotion rather than medical and surgical qualifications. Liberate stands for a group of highly qualified plastic surgeons whose reputations are far more important than encouraging patients to have unnecessary or unsafe surgery. We encourage patients to seek second and third opinions and to research your surgeon before allowing him or her to operate on you.’ Without the tools needed to make responsible choices cosmetic surgery can end up costing people financially, physically and psychologically, Liberate aims to give people the power to choose, providing them with a new and safer approach to cosmetic surgery. f you’ve ever thought private jet travel is only reserved for celebrities, royalty and business tycoons, then think again because as Bob Dylan once famously sang, the times they are a changing… Recently, a European air navigation safety organisation published a report, which confirmed that business aviation was one of the strongest market sectors in 2010, with flight traffic bouncing back from 2009 with an increase of 5.5%. Contrary to what you might think, especially remembering last year’s volcanic ash cloud, business aviation showed signs of recovery and 2011 is looking promising. The private/business aviation world continues to grow for several compelling reasons. As with many of us, the weary travelling public is becoming more disenchanted with time-

consuming queues at commercial airports, as well as the spiralling cost of flying. On the other hand, business aviation offers its customers a very different experience, one which not only saves them time, but one which packages a very private and bespoke service that immerses them in unparalleled levels of comfort and luxury. As an example, busy executives can take advantage of arranging last-minute flights to attend a meeting, with stress-free checkin at their preferred airport. And, more importantly, if you choose your broker carefully, it’s not as expensive as you might think… Private brokerage

With both the renowned Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix showcases

“CrownJets came highly recommended to me and I have been very happy with the service the team has provided. Also the empty legs prices I have been given in the past have been very competitive. “ CEO International Organisation

coming up in May, it promises to be a busy time for many business aviation operators, but more so for those select few that can offer a truly private brokerage service. CrownJets is such a company, founded by Managing Director, Jodie Packham, who began her career as a charter broker at Bombardier Skyjet International in Farnborough. CrownJets specialises in global ad hoc charter, aircraft leasing, private flight analysis, jet membership and aircraft sales, all managed with the highest standards of personal service and attention to detail. “At its heart, the foundation to our philosophy at CrownJets is our passion to deliver a quality, bespoke private jet charter experience. The company’s ethos is to not only build partnerships with customers but to also foster a personal relationship where they know they can always count on our unique standards of service,” explained Jodie. The personal touch

“This personal and private touch is the cornerstone of our success,” confirmed Jodie. Charter flexibility

“Jodie is always available on her mobile 24 hours a day 7 days a week, when we were away in Malaga, we wanted to change the date of our return flight, Jodie was extremely helpful and is always very happy to help which really took the stress out of the organisation for me.” Private Client

There is no doubt that to many of us, the world of private jets can be complicated, with a confusing range of options, acronyms and assorted industry jargon. Fortunately, help is at hand, as CrownJets can cut through the maze with its professional in-depth knowledge of the private jet sector. They can provide a straightforward guide to help clients make an informed choice to turn their lifestyle aspirations into reality, with no obligation quotes and full flight analysis. Customers can also become members of CrownJets, which allow them to have their very own personal charter broker who, rather like an account manager, is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All in all, there are many advantages of having your own broker but the crowning glory of this service is that you have instant expertise at your fingertips.

With Cannes and Monaco on the horizon, one area that will be busy for CrownJets is aircraft charter, where a private jet is chartered for a specific route. The seats are not sold individually; the price covers the aircraft flying from say, Oxford to Cannes, irrespective of whether the aircraft is full or not. The benefit of booking a charter flight through CrownJets is that the broker can negotiate the very best offer within the market, each time a customer flies. Once booked, CrownJets then manages all flight arrangements from start to finish, again with their hallmark personal touch to ensure a seamless and hassle-free service. For your added peace of mind, the private broker will remain on call for the duration of your trip to assist with any queries or changes so you can relax. Chartering is very flexible as departures

“We have worked with Jodie and her team for about 3 years, often finding aircraft for our demanding and unhappy customers. And, usually at the last minute, with little if any planning time. CrownJets tirelessly managed the almost endless itinerary changes our customers come up with by just taking the information, and doing whatever it takes to make them happen. “ CEO - Large Private Company can not only be arranged from any airport in the UK but also from any international airports. Such freedom of choice literally stretches your world when booking with CrownJets, as you manage your own time and schedule that best suits your lifestyle. In summary, private jet travel offers a wealth of flying options. With its pedigree in private brokerage, CrownJets offers a very unique service, all managed with a personal touch and attention to detail that will see you never flying commercial again…..the time for CrownJets has well and truly landed.
