Portraits of Golden Cap
Local artist Edward Hall draws his inspiration from the dramatic coastal and inland landscapes of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. At Lyme Regis Museum’s Rotunda Gallery from 18 January until 5 March, his latest exhibition, ‘Portraits of Golden Cap’, explores the iconic form and setting of this highest point on the south coast. Hall’s formative years in rural Essex and Cumbria nurtured his love of the outdoors and a lifelong passion to explore and interpret the landscapes around him through painting. After a busy career as a chartered landscape architect that left little time for painting, he made a recent lifestyle change that resulted in a move to West Dorset.

UNDERSTANDING SAKE AT ART SUSHI
The process
Sake is the traditional drink of Japan made by fermenting rice, water, yeast and Koji. It start with the rice harvest in Autumn, before being polished, washed and soaked in order to get ride of impuritities. One of the most exciting thing about this beverage, is the unique multiple parallel fermentation process which is a complex and very delicate operation to complete it. This special process begins when the starches are transformed into sugar and the sugar is converted into alcohol. It is this unique process which create the extraordinary and complex tastes & aromas. The best season to brew “Jizake” (small production) is in the winter, as the cold help to control the fermentation processes.
How to drink
Choosing the right vessel to enjoy sake is part of the experience. Traditionally the beautiful ceramic Ochoko cups are used to drink sake, sake is poured from a Tokkuri (flask) as part of the service etiquette in Japan. We entered a new level of enjoyment with the use of fine wine glasses; a more subtle appreciation of aromas and textures, especially for the more aromatic sakes.
Cold or Warm
The Pairing
Sake can be a beverage with a light to of rich texture, and aromas ranging from light herbal notes to suave tropical fruits and complex aromas, the ABV is closer to wine, which makes it very interesting to create unique food pairings, not only Japan’s food, which is the natural pairing, but also a lot of delicious occidental dishes are pairing very well with sake. It should be all about finding the perfect balance between the aromas, the textures and the flavours. Sake cleans the palate and also has an extraordinary aptitude as an Umami expander or a softener of strong flavours. Most importantly, it complements a wide arrays of food, naturally.
The media challenge: If you found this article interesting, please take a picture and post it on Instagram, mention us @artsushi_uk and come to share a complimentary glass of sake!
Kanpai!
A key factor is the service temperature, which plays a more important role than with wine, as sake is versatile and the range of temperatures varies from 5C° to over 50C°, and the same sake served at various temperatures, can give you a totally different perception. Normally we would serve the more aromatic types cold or chambrée and the Futsuu, Junmai or Honjoso, can also be served warmer enhancing the umami and sweetness that might be unnoticeable when served colder.

EXCELLENT INSPECTION RESULTS
The Head of Yarrells School and Nursery, Sally Moulton, is absolutely delighted with the outcomes of their recent inspection report. The school achieved the highest possible results and was recognised as providing excellent education in all 16 areas of educational quality and pupils’ personal development.
She said: “I adore leading Yarrells and have always known it is a gem. I am passionate about providing the best possible education for young people where they have the opportunity to learn in a wide range of subjects, including meaningful learning experiences in sport, music, the creative and performing arts.
“I believe children need a protected space in which they can learn about themselves, can grow in self-expression and self-confidence, can explore the world imaginatively and creatively as well as gain deep knowledge and understanding in academic subjects. I have always believed it is possible to create an excellent educational environment that meets the needs of all abilities, is broad and rich in its curriculum base and doesn’t compromise on quality.
“We have an enviable academic reputation, with the pass rate for 11+ entry sitting at 95% in 2022, but it’s not just about results for
us – far from it. For us, it’s about the individual and building a relationship with them: finding out what makes each child unique, what they need to thrive and then ensuring we provide that. It is a statement of fact that every child at Yarrells makes excellent educational progress against their starting points.
“I will happily shout from the roof-tops that education should not be a ‘one-size fits all’ programme, and at Yarrells, we tailor our curriculum to meet the needs of each child. To have received the external validation from the Independent Schools Inspectorate that we do this excellently, in every area of education, confirms to me that we have been successful in creating this vitally important environment in which children flourish under our care.
“Yarrells is truly special and has a deep hold on my heart. I am very excited about where the next five years will take us and am completely committed to leading the school on that journey.” yarrells.co.uk

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR...
When you walk through the vast and impressive door at Clayesmore, there could not be a warmer welcome. This Dorset-based independent boarding and day school is well known for its outstanding pastoral care and community spirit. Whether in the prep school or the senior school, the focus is on cultivating a warm, friendly and kind culture in all its pupils. Senior students take an active role as mentors and guides to the younger students; particularly in the boarding environment.
Being a relatively small school, everyone is known as an individual. The nurturing environment in the prep boarding house, and the supportive environment in the five senior boarding houses creates a real family feel. Houseparents, their assistants and matrons are dedicated to the pupils’ wellbeing and keeping balance and focus to the pupils’ days. House
staff understand that children can go through ups and downs with friends, schoolwork, home life and just the trials and tribulations of growing up. Their extensive experience allows them to support pupils in every challenge they may face
Whilst the ethos of the school is rooted in kindness, warmth and friendliness, it is no less rigorous in its academic or competitive ambitions. Almost all those applying to university last year were awarded their first choice destination and the breadth of courses and universities students have accepted is impressive - showing real evidence of a school which supports the individual and helps them achieve their goals. Clayesmore has a forthcoming Open Morning on 25 February 2023, and you are warmly invited to visit, hear from the Head and to be toured by pupils to get a real feel for school life. PASSPORT TO JAPAN
At this time of year, when we are all seduced by the turquoise seas of the advertisements for foreign holidays, it is fascinating to consider the extraordinary travel and tourism exploits of Bournemouth hoteliers, Annie and Merton Russell-Cotes over a hundred years ago. They visited over 40 countries and travelled to every continent. Steam ships, railways and guidebooks were opening up the world to the Victorian middle classes as never before. Indeed, travel agent Thomas Cook offered his first trip from Leicester to Loughborough in 1841 and by 1872 was taking a small group on a world tour covering 25,000 miles in 8 months at a cost of 200 guineas (£10,000). Merton and Annie were obviously a cut-above package tours and travelled independently, rather looking down on the ‘Cook’s party of over 80’ they met in St Petersburg in 1898.
Their biggest adventure was in November 1884, when they set off from Plymouth on a round-the-world trip that took them to Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Hawaii, America, Japan, China, India, Egypt and finally back home after 18 months. Annie wrote a book about her travels, ‘Westward from the Golden Gate’, in which she vividly describes the highlight of the trip - their 7 week stay in Japan.
Japan had been a feudal state, isolated from the rest of the world for several hundred years, but with the restoration of the Emperor Meiji in 1868 was going through a period of rapid modernisation. Japan held huge fascination for the West and Annie and Merton arrived at a pivotal moment in its history and were spellbound. They visited the famous sites, we might visit today, including Tokyo, Nikko, Kamakura, Kyoto and Nagasaki.
Tourism was in its infancy, but the couple managed to utilize the new railways and stay in ‘westernstyle hotels’ serving corned beef and apple pie. But they also embraced the experience and travelled by

‘kago’, ‘a kind of basket made of wickerwork, slung from a rough pole, and carried on the shoulders of two men’ and stayed in a traditional inn ‘to get a thorough insight into the ways and customs of the people’.
Annie wrote ‘We had our dinner squatting on the floor… the flavours of the dishes were strange and new to our uninitiated tastes’. Indeed, she feared she ‘could never get to like’ Japanese green tea.
Annie and Merton were established collectors of fine art with which they had filled their hotel - the Royal Bath –to attract high-class visitors to the resort. In Japan they were overwhelmed by the quality and beauty of the crafts and ‘were besieged by curio dealers’ eager to sell to them. Typical of their time, they were as eager to buy. According to Merton, they sent back to Bournemouth ‘over one hundred packing cases… filled with curios’.
They collected whatever caught their eye and the collection provides a unique insight into their interests and enthusiasms. It is also wonderfully idiosyncratic and personal including samurai armour and Buddhist shrines alongside throwaway chopsticks and their bamboo slippers ‘stolen’ from the hotel bedroom!
When back in Bournemouth, Annie and Merton put their acquisitions on display in the Japanese Drawing Room of the Royal Bath and distinguished guests would be invited to visit. When they built East Cliff Hall as their home and then donated it as the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, they created the Mikado’s Room to display their collection. The museum opened formally in 1922 and today you can still see this unique Japanese collection as Annie and Merton envisaged.

Ultimate Home Theatre
Media/Family Rooms
These are multi-use spaces, where a large TV forms the centre of the experience. TV’s with sound-bars or centre channel loudspeakers installed below can also be hidden and motorised to appear on demand or, as is increasingly popular, integrated into a ‘made to measure’ media wall where all components are discretely housed.
Audio performance can be the equal of a dedicated Cinema with loudspeakers either engineered into the fabric of the building or stylishly wall mounted.
What can I watch and listen to?
You’ll be able to watch anything from regular TV, Sky, 4KTV through to Blu-Ray, Gaming and the plethora of Apps and streaming platforms, all benefiting from the immersive audio performance embedded in every broadcast standard.
Do you want to create the ultimate home theatre in your home? We show you what makes the ultimate home theatre and what makes a dual purpose & media/family room.
A dedicated home theatre is a luxury environment with a fully immersive cinema experience shown on a high resolution big screen and Dolby Atmos sound that places you in the centre of the action. Settle into a movie, take in a concert or sporting event, switch on the games console or just watch regular TV, all will be like you’ve never experienced before.
Your home theatre will likely have specialised seating, lighting, control, acoustic treatments and structural works.
Dual Purpose Rooms
Dual purpose rooms often have a concealed projection screen and projector that descends from the ceiling or other hidden recess when in use and returns to its hidden status when the system is switched off allowing the transformation to a living space with usual room decor.
Where can I build my cinema?
Practically anywhere assuming there is sufficient space to incorporate the desired screen size and seating. Garages and lofts make ideal environments for conversion as do outbuildings such as garden rooms although any reasonably sized room will work well.
Each element contributes; and it’s the sum of these parts that combine to deliver the ultimate experience!
Dawsons have pioneered home cinema since 1980’s and have designed and built dedicated home cinemas, media & dual-purpose rooms across the UK. Get in touch for a survey of your property, where they’ll recommend best use of your available space and help bring your ideas to life.

DORSET TEA LAUNCHES ITS FIRST PREMIUM LOOSE LEAF BLEND
INSPIRED BY A LUXURIOUS
LAZY DAY ON SANDBANKS BEACH
Launched last September, Dorset Tea’s first Loose Leaf Tea marked the brand’s most luxurious label yet. The brand-new Loose Leaf Black Tea is designed to be as luxurious as a lazy summer’s day on Sandbanks Beach, transporting consumers to this famed Dorset setting with every sip.
Offered in a Limited Edition 125g premium gold tin, the blend is inspired by the opulence of Sandbanks Peninsula. Created by Dorset-based Master blender Tony Warr, using the finest orthodox teas from world-class tea estates, the new Loose Leaf Tea combines the best quality Kenyan tea with the brightest most flavoursome Rwandan leaves and a touch of malty Assam.
Tony says: “Launching our first Loose Leaf Dorset Tea is a significant milestone for the brand – as we continue to blend the finest teas to create a taste and feeling synonymous with our beloved county. Sandbanks is an iconic and luxurious setting, and the perfect backdrop for our premium Loose Leaf blend.”
Celebrating the ritual of indulging in a premium cup of tea, the Loose Leaf allows consumers to enjoy the 100% Black Tea at its very best. Lauren Forecast, Brand Manger Dorset Tea adds: “We are so excited to finally introduce a Loose Leaf Tea into our Dorset Tea
range. It makes a truly delicious cup of tea and is a real nod to the beauty of our exquisite county!”
The Sandbanks Loose Leaf Tea is available online at dorsettea.co.uk and with select partners across Dorset, including Ocado, Hunts Food Group, Country Fare Foodservice and Holley’s Fine Food.
Look out for the Dorset Tea caravan at the Dorset County Show and Weymouth Seafood Festival this summer, where the new Loose Leaf will be available to sample.
About Dorset Tea:
One of the most iconic brands in the area, it all started back in 1934, when its founder Keith Spicer blended and packed tea from his mother’s kitchen in Bournemouth. The tea tasted so good that by 1940 a site was acquired to produce Keith Spicers tea on a bigger scale.
In 2009 as part of the brand’s 75th anniversary celebrations the ‘Dorset Tea’ brand was launched to epitomise the very first high-quality tea blend that Keith produced back in 1934. The brand has gone from strength to strength since.
The brand now has 14 blends, including its Sunshine Blend, Ginger & Sunshine Lemon, Cool Chamomile, Strawberries & Cream and new Loose Leaf. dorsettea.co.uk

years of Porsche 1948-2023
The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 “No.1” Roadster. This is the day on which the Porsche brand was born. And purchased by a woman called Jolanda Tschudi, of Switzerland .
The Type 356 turned Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car into a reality. “His vision at that time embodied all of the values that still define the brand to this day”, said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “Tradition is a commitment. Without our tradition and without our core values, we would not be where we are today”, explained Blume. “We have the solid technological expertise, creative employees and unique team spirit. We have what it takes to ensure that the Porsche brand continues to fascinate.”
The successor model to the 356, the Porsche 911 designed by Ferry Porsche’s son Ferdinand Alexander, finally gave the company its breakthrough as one of the leading manufacturers of sports cars in the world, both from a technical and a design perspective.
The Porsche 911, presented to the global public for the first time in 1963, has now been built over a million times. “Although the 911 has been consistently developed in the intervening decades and enhanced many times over with new, innovative technologies, no other vehicle has managed to retain its original essence in the same way as the 911”, says Blume. “As the centrepiece of the brand, the 911
has become the sports car of dreams, winning the collective heart of enthusiasts all over the world.”
In 1966 presented as the ‘Safety Cabriolet’, the Porsche 911 Targa was launched. And the following year the Porsche 911 R was built for use in motorsport. Weighing 800 kg, it had a 6-cylinder, naturally-aspirated and horizontally-opposed engine producing 154 kW (210 PS), making it incredibly fast.
In 1972 The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was launched as the

sporty leading model of the 911 range. And in 1975 at the height of the oil crisis, Porsche presented the first 911 Turbo – the world’s first production sports car with exhaust turbocharger and pressure regulator. And in 1977 conceived as the successor to the 911, the Porsche 928 broke new ground in terms of technology and design. It was powered by a light-metal alloy V8 engine.
The one millionth Porsche rolled off the assembly line on 15th July 1996. And to leave the 20th century in style the 911 series was rounded off with an exceptional sporty version, the 911 GT3.
Celebrating the new millennium, Porsche displayed its high-performance Carrera GT sports car at the Louvre in Paris and in 2002, presented its third car line: the sporty, off-road Cayenne SUV. Series production of the Carrera GT commenced in 2003 and by 2006, 1,270 units of the fast (up to 330 km/h) high-performance sports car had been built.
At the Geneva Motor Show 2010, Porsche presented the 918 Spyder high-performance hybrid as a concept study for the 21st century sports car. The Boxster Spyder was a radical return to the origins of the roadster: two seats, enhanced performance, no room for incidentals. Marking 2013, the 918 Spyder set a Nürburgring lap record: the first road-approved car to complete a lap in under 7 minutes - 6 minutes

A GUIDE TO FINDING THE PERFECT LUXURY WEDDING DESTINATION
40 JANUARY 2023 WEDDINGS
Asuccessful life is not measured by the milestones achieved, but by the memories created.
An important milestone in everyone’s life is their wedding day. This day marks not just the spiritual union of two souls, but also the coming together of family and friends. It is a celebration of happy endings and new beginnings.
The uncertainty of the past couple of years has led to deep introspection, and to the realisation of how important family and close friendships are. For these are the bonds that stand by you unwaveringly in times of strife. Weddings, of late, have become intimate and more personal. A small group of guests, who mean the world to the couple, at a beautiful holiday destination is fast becoming the norm. From star-lit royal venues to tropical beach settings, couples are venturing out of their comfort zone to make their special day one for the books. If you’re in the midst of planning for your special day or wish to one day plan your own bespoke wedding, here are some popular social-media-worthy destinations that are sure to be a hit with your loved ones.
Give your wedding the royal touch in Udaipur, Rajasthan
This city is the perfect setting for a luxurious fairytale wedding. Manifest a special day like the kings and queens of yore in a candlelit lakeside property like the Leela Palace and The Oberoi Udaivilas or the majestic Taj Lake Palace, which is surrounded by water. What’s more, your guests can also enjoy and learn about Udaipur’s rich history and culture and shop from many of its vibrant markets.
Get married like a movie star in Lake Como, Italy
This glamorous destination, made popular by Hollywood superstar George Clooney—who also owns a home there—is increasingly becoming a favourite venue for the rich and famous. There are several luxury properties to choose from that overlook the lake such as 500-year-old Villa Balbiano or Villa Erba, which was built in the 19th century. You can host all your functions and provide accommodation for all your guests at these magnificent properties.

Dive into married life in sunny Mauritius

For all those ladies who need more definition in their eyebrows. Microblading is a semi-permanent form of cosmetic tattooing, that looks soft and subtle. But unlike traditional tattoos, which use a tattoo gun, microblading uses a blade-shaped tool with a row of tiny, barely visible needles to create hair-like strokes along your brows while depositing pigment into your skin. The result? Realistic-looking brow hairs that don’t wash off for a year or more. Over time, the pigment on your brows will also lighten a shade or two from its original colour. Microblading can be great for those with thin, sparse brows to get some definition and fullness. To arrange your permanent make up appointment or your consultation, please call Skarlet 07745 886439

ROMANTIC FLORALS
WE SPEAK TO ALANA WATTS, OWNER AND FLORAL DESIGNER OF PETAL AND WILD. THE COMPANY SPECIALISES IN WILD, PRETTY AND ROMANTIC WEDDING FLORAL DESIGN COVERING, LONDON, ESSEX AND SURROUNDING AREAS
Tell me a bit about yourself and your company.
I’ve always been creative and loved the outdoors. As a child I’d spend hours outside in the garden helping my parents prune the roses and plant tulip bulbs. I trained at Italia Conti Academy of theatrical arts and performed in West End shows as a singer/dancer for a number of years. I was frequently sent the most beautiful bouquets during the run from a florist stand outside the theatre on Seven Dials. Once I left the theatre world I struggled to find something that gave me the same passion. By chance a leaflet was popped through my door advertising a floristry course at my local university which caught my attention. I enrolled and am delighted to say it reignited my creative fire and reminded me how much I love working with natural materials. It was totally fate looking out for me and I’ve never looked back. I created Petal and Wild flowers to appeal to the bride who wants something completely unique and elegant on their wedding day. My style is romantic and natural, like flowers just picked from a country garden. I enjoy working with a loose brief so I can really be creative and design something stunning and enchanting for the big day.
Where do you get inspiration from?
I get inspiration from so many sources, including the natural beauty of the English countryside. Pinterest and Instagram are great online tools too as they give you access to amazing floral designs from around the world.
What is your favourite part of being a wedding florist?
I love the early morning trips to Covent Garden Flower market shopping for my blooms and the excitement to see what’s new in and what is in season. I also love seeing the bride’s reaction to her flowers on the wedding morning. It’s such a wonderful feeling after months of planning to know you’ve been a part of making someone’s special day look beautiful.
What plans do you have in the future?
More weddings and more beautiful flowers! I’ve got some gorgeous weddings booked for next year at amazing venues, it’s a privilege and I’m very grateful to work with such lovely brides. petalandwild.co.uk; 07976 881505
TOP TIPS
Let your florist know your budget from the very start. It’s much easier to advise on designs and flowers to achieve the look you are after if we have this information. If you love expensive flowers such as peonies, ask your florist to use them in your bouquet and find a more economical substitute for the table flowers if your budget will not stretch.
Ask your florist to choose flowers that are in season, it doesn’t mean they are necessarily cheaper but means they are better quality and at their best. It will also help to encompass the time year you have chosen to get married in.
Choose a few larger arrangements, rather than lots of smaller vases or jars if you really want to make an impact on your wedding day. Pedestal arrangements and pew ends can be re-used from the ceremony and repositioned in the reception area afterwards to help make the most of your flowers. SUPPLIERS:

CLARIDGE’S UNVEILS FIRST SPA IN ITS HISTORY
82 JANUARY 2023
In a ground-breaking project that has seen teams of experts excavate five floors into the London clay, to pave the way for the next 200 years of Claridge’s life, the legendary Mayfair hotel announces the opening of its first ever spa.
Situated three floors down with 7,000 square feet of space, Claridge’s Spa is a haven of wellness and tranquillity featuring its first ever swimming pool, steam rooms, sauna and seven treatments rooms. The space is an epicentre of wellness, showcasing healing rituals, a knowledge of restorative body work and the latest bioinnovation to amplify emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing. The service is signature five-star Claridge’s, with touches of the iconic timeless glamour synonymous with the hotel. Claridge’s Spa offers both a best-in-class list of resident brands including Josh Wood, Augustinus Bader and FaceGym, and an ever-evolving roster of visiting wellness masters, featuring nail artist Harriet Westmoreland and acupuncturist Ross J. Barr, ensuring guests are expertly treated, head to toe.
Guests cross the iconic monochrome lobby and embark on a journey to a sensorial space of calm serenity, with sounds of flowing water, a visual play of light and shadow, and energy-cleansing music. Escaping the bustle of the capital, spa guests can feel time moving at a slower pace and experience a sense of replenishing restoration. The heated swimming pool is central to the spa, framed by a striking, multi-vaulted ceiling and stone columns. Cabanas set back from the water offer privacy to relax and unwind. In addition to private consultation spaces, the treatment rooms are oak panelled and ensuite, where each treatment is personalised to the individual, inspired by the ancient concept of omakase (‘leaving another to decide what is best’).
The piece de resistance is Josh Wood at Claridge’s – a dedicated hair and beauty space within the spa, where celebrated British hair colour expert Josh Wood brings his hand-picked dream team of A-list stylists to the hotel. This collaboration sees his first home in Mayfair, and a 21st century reimagination of what haircare looks like in hotels.

INTRODUCING PURDEY’S SHOOTING & LIFESTYLE COLLECTION
FASHION & BEAUTY
88 JANUARY 2023
To set the scene: imagine a relaxed day on a beautiful country estate, with guests arriving from town. There’s an air of shoots gone by, but we’re very much in the present moment. Spirits are high, conversation is flowing, and the company is, of course, excellent.
This season celebrates Purdey classics.
Several of the tweeds in the collection utilise the natural palette of the Shetland herd, undyed for minimal intervention from sheep to finished piece. Woven in Scotland, with wool that’s certified sustainable and ethically sourced, Purdey cuts the tweed into various top coat and field coat styles, each subtly sophisticated.
Highlights include:
The Men’s Tweed Field Coat leads the charge, cut in a rich cashmere blend, tonally reflecting the surrounding fields. Large reinforced cartridge pockets feature retainer straps for ease of access, while hand-warming pockets are lined with micro-fleece. It’s weather-proof yet luxurious – with a technical lining and adjustable storm cuffs. The subtle olive and navy houndstooth check ensures it will take you seamlessly from town to countryside.
The Women’s Loden Field Coat evokes the deep blue stillness of Highland lakes. Crafted in wool and alpaca, with a weather-proof lining, it’s an all-round outdoor essential.
The Men’s Window Pane Gilet, a fine example of Loden fabric, created in Austria. There, skilled craftspeople source the highest quality merino wool, for a refined look. The corresponding Women’s Loden Shooting Vest sports a pale, window pane check, woven into the forest green backdrop. Best layered over a lightweight cashmere knit.
The Cable Knit Sweaters reflect the landscape, too. Supremely comfortable in a relaxed fit, with deeply ribbed collar and cuffs, the new slate and khaki colourways match moody winter skies. Combining superfine lambswool and cashmere, these elegant layering pieces are made near the borders of Scotland in Hawick, the home of Scottish knitwear, where traditional techniques are honoured and stitching is finished by
ABOUT PURDEY
Their legacy began in 1814 when James Purdey opened the doors of his eponymous business on Princes Street (now Gerrard Street). James’s only son, James the Younger, was the next generation to take over the helm, who in turn passed onto his own sons, James (III) and Athol, when they joined the business in 1877 — creating James Purdey & Sons. Almost every subsequent generation of Purdey has been involved in the continued success of the business, including the award of being a prestigious Royal Warrant Holder.
Today, a seventh-generation Purdey still sits on the board of directors. With over 200 years behind them, they are proud to build on the foundation of tradition and excellence that he created.
Purdey’s Shooting Collection is available to purchase from 57-58 South Audley Street London W1K 2ED and online purdey.com
hand. Purdey’s signature cable and trellis motif, knitted in cashmere for a luxurious expression, nods to the heritage engravings of our gunmaking. The Women’s Cashmere Cable Knit Vest in pale aqua or soft sand sees a pattern realised in artisanal cable stitches, drawing inspiration from nature.
The Men’s Mayfair Jacket takes an archival feathered herringbone tweed, cut into a singlebreasted style. If you believe mismatching tweed is sacrilege, team with the waistcoat and trousers, all cut from the same cloth.
The Women’s Highgrove Cape in Oxnam tweed – a fawn base over-checked in soft blue –brings a touch of extravagance. Inspired by our archives, where Purdey men would also wear capes to weather the elements, it’s now exclusive to womenswear.
The Women’s Craigowan Waxed Cotton Trench Coat also looks to our history, specifically the traditional stockman style worn for sporting pursuits. You’ll see reference in the caped shoulder detail, while the full length makes for a statement silhouette, with side-seam zips for extra striding capacity.
We encourage you to explore the full collection – here’s to a Winter season spent in the great outdoors.

KATE’S MOST GOOGLED FASHION MOMENTS OF 2022
From Alexander McQueen coat dresses to yellow Eighties-inspired outfits, these are the royal looks we’ve been searching for this year.
By Prudence Wade
92 JANUARY 2023
FASHION & BEAUTY
With royal tours and plenty of engagements in the diary, the Princess of Wales had a busy 2022 – and her wardrobe was more than up to the challenge.
From colourful outfits and vintage-inspired looks to sombre black mourning outfits, Kate’s fashion has been characteristically polished throughout the year.
But which outfits piqued our interest the most? There were particular days of the year we turned to Google to find out more about what Kate was wearing. These are the top days – and corresponding outfits –we were looking up Kate’s fashion.
FOR THE QUEEN’S FUNERAL
For the sombre occasion of the Queen’s funeral in September, Kate wore a black Alexander McQueen coat dress with a wide-brimmed hat and veil. Pearls are traditionally worn by the royals in mourning, and Kate accessorised her look with the late Queen’s Japanese pearl choker necklace – which she also wore to Prince Philip’s funeral the previous year.
FOR JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
Kate wheeled out a series of enviable outfits for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, and the outfit that had people rushing to Google was the pastel yellow Emilia Wickstead outfit, worn to a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral. The elegant midi dress featured wrap detailing underneath the bust and was teamed with a matching hat by Philip Treacy and the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings – which were given to the late Queen as a wedding present by the Hakim of Bahrain in 1947.
AT A SERVICE FOR THE QUEEN
Ahead of the Queen’s funeral, Kate attended a service for the late monarch in Westminster Hall. She kept her outfit simple – a black Catherine Walker coat dress, worn with a pearl and diamond brooch.
AT THE PLATINUM JUBILEE PAGEANT
Kate continued her run of colourful Jubilee outfits for the pageant, choosing a raspberry Stella McCartney to watch the show. The cut of the dress was quite demure – with long puff sleeves, a high neck and midi length, but the bright colour made it feel a lot more fun. While fans went wild for her outfit, she was almost outshone by fouryear-old Prince Louis – who struggled to sit still during the two-hour pageant.
AT A CHARITY POLO MATCH
Proving a midi dress
is always her go-to, the day after the pageant Kate stepped out in a white version to watch the Prince of Wales play in a charity polo match. She turned to one of her favourite designers, Emilia Wickstead, for the occasion, and looked elegant in the simple white dress with black piping.
LEAVING THE BAHAMAS
Kate switched up her style for the royal tour around the Caribbean in March – while she packed some fail-safe midi dresses and suits for the trip, she was also a bit more experimental with vintage finds and unusual colours. The most searched-for outfit from the trip was the yellow Alessandra Rich dress she wore leaving The Bahamas. With puff sleeves, peplum detailing and a bow on the front, the vibe was distinctly Eighties-inspired – and quite different to the silhouettes we’re used to seeing Kate in. While most of Kate’s outfits tend to sell out immediately, this one is still available to buy – and has been reduced from £1,690 to £1,014 on Net-A-Porter.
AT CARDIFF CASTLE
We can only imagine how many coat dresses Kate has in her wardrobe – this was one of the most popular of the year, a red version by Eponine London (which she first wore back in 2021). Kate donned the outfit for a Jubilee visit to Cardiff Castle – and as red is the colour of Wales, we can’t imagine her choice was an accident.
AT WIMBLEDON
As a patron of the All England Club, Kate is a familiar face at Wimbledon – and this year she took Prince George to the Royal Box for the first time, to watch the men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios. Kate kept things light and summery in a navy blue polka dot dress by Alessandra Rich, with the cut reminiscent of the yellow dress she wore by the same designer in The Bahamas.

QUEEN OF PUNK DAME VIVIENNE WESTWOOD’S FASHION LEGACY
THE LATE GREAT DESIGNER CHAMPIONED PUNK FASHION AND WAS COMMITTED TO ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY.
BY PRUDENCE WADE.
Few individuals disrupted fashion quite like Dame Vivienne Westwood, who has died aged 81.
Known for her counterculture aesthetic and commitment to the environment, fashion wouldn’t be where it is today without Westwood carving her unique path.
She continued working until the end of her life, with the announcement on her Instagram page reading: “Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better. She led an amazing life. Her innovation and impact over the last 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future.”
Tributes have already started pouring in from the world of fashion, music and beyond, with Chrissie Hynde – lead singer of the Pretenders – tweeting: “Vivienne is gone and
the world is already a less interesting place.” Westwood certainly made the world a more interesting place throughout her career – these are some of the major ways she broke boundaries…
SHE BROUGHT A PUNK AESTHETIC TO HIGH FASHION
With her provocative and boundary-pushing designs, Westwood helped set the fashion tone for the punk movement in the 1970s.
She opened a shop with her then-partner Malcolm McLaren on the King’s Road in 1971 – later called SEX – which was frequented by some of the biggest names in punk – including the Sex Pistols, who McLaren managed.
During this time, Westwood’s designs set the tone for punk fashion – think ripped T-shirts, lots of safety pin embellishments and tartan accents. Westwood often used anti-establishment iconography in her clothes –particularly subverting traditional images of the monarchy.
In 1998 she told The Independent: “I was a punk before it got its name. I had that hairstyle and purple lipstick. Girls stopped me in the street and said, ‘Look at the state of that’.”

The climate crisis might be top of the agenda now, with brands like Stella McCartney using eco-friendly materials and emphasising the need for sustainability in fashion.
But when Westwood started talking about sustainability way back in Eighties, she was seen as something of an outlier. She used traditional tailoring from Savile Row and put great importance on how garments were made – considering the supply chain long before many other major players did.
Her work was always political, and she made her explicit focus the environment in the Noughties. In 2012, Westwood appeared on the catwalk during London Fashion Week in a T-shirt saying ‘climate revolution’, and in 2015 she drove a tank near former prime minister David Cameron’s home to protest fracking.
Some have struggled with Westwood’s message to ‘buy less’, while she still produced multiple new collections a year. However, this was something she was conscious of, with the Vivienne Westwood website reading: “We know there is a contradiction between our activism and the industry we are part of. Fashion creates products which are too often disposable, and which – through their creation, distribution and eventual disposal – can have a disproportionately negative impact on our planet, its wildlife and people.
“We know this and we know we must do better. We have been adapting the way we make our clothes and accessories over the last few years to reflect the growing urgency to change how the industry operates but, in this time of climate crisis, we must go further.”
Westwood continued to post on her blog (climaterevolution.co.uk) up until her death – in November she praised the young activists who threw soup on Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting, writing: “Young people are desperate. They’re wearing a T-shirt that says: Just Stop Oil. They’re doing something.”
SHE CHAMPIONED ANDROGYNY IN FASHION
Over the past few years, androgyny has become big business in fashion – championed by the likes of Brad Pitt, who wore a skirt on the red carpet in August.
This arguably wouldn’t have happened without Westwood. From the beginning of her career, she’s pushed the boundaries of gender in fashion, putting men in skirts and women in sharp tailoring.
One clip that’s been going viral on social
media since Westwood’s
shows an extremely awkward TV interview when she was introducing her autumn/winter 1988-89 collection, called Time Machine. Westwood had male models wearing pearls, and the interviewer asked – to the giggles of the audience – “Tell me about the twinset and pearls for men, has it caught on? I have not seen a lot of men wearing twinsets and pearls.”
Westwood replied: “You might see your bank manager in five years wearing that” – proving she was far ahead of her time. The audience may have been laughing at Westwood’s designs at the time, but her prediction eventually came true – a string of pearls is current fashion icon Harry Styles’ signature look.
SHE CONSTANTLY SUBVERTED EXPECTATIONS
Westwood’s fashion was meant to challenge and subvert expectations. She first introduced corsetry into her designs in the 1970s, and it remained her signature style in the decades that followed.
With corsets, Westwood was one of the first designers to experiment with the ‘underwear as outerwear’ trend (one that is still in fashion today), and she used them to make a strong statement for female empowerment and liberation –challenging their original meaning of restriction.
As American designer Marc Jacobs said in his tribute to Westwood: “You did it first. Always. Incredible style with brilliant and meaningful substance.”

Combined with hints of fruit within the fragrance which are reminiscent of the Park’s beautiful cherry blossom trees in bloom, the blend complements the deeper, slightly spicier notes of rich, green vetiver and warm, smooth woods which round off the scent and add good balance.
Aquick promenade away from our Jermyn Street shop lies St James’s, one of London’s oldest Royal Parks, surrounded by some of the country’s most famous landmarks and lush greenery. Creamy sweet and bitter green aromas encompass the shoreline of the blissful lake towered by an abundance of fig trees, immense in scale with elongated deciduous leaves flaunting their architectural foliage, believed to be the largest in Britain. The impressive fig trees that border the peaceful lake have a particularly remarkable, lingering scent and it was this uplifting aroma and tranquil haven that provided the inspiration for Mulberry Fig, the latest adorned scent that now enters the brand’s Private Collection of exquisite perfumes.

An ode to curves
Tout in favour of the round. In the home, curves are calming, they imply comfort, softness and safety – no objects threatening to bash shins or cause dents here.
PLAY TIME
Now roundness has really kicked off, the newest designer pieces showcasing exaggerated, extravagant, expressive curves that go over-the-top with size, scale or configuration. While in more traditional shapes this may be too imposing or impactful for indoors, without angles the new forms are childlike and friendly – often with a dash of the cheeky or whimsical.
AU NATUREL
These designs also hint at the organic, many of the shapes appearing gently smoothed over time, or obviously sculpted by human hands. While perfect circles, discs and spheres still play a part in the contemporary interior, they’re supported by forms that are imperfect, tying in with our ongoing love affair with nature and bringing the outdoor in to create an inherently relaxing mood.

Milanese designers Studiopepe for Gallotti & Radice is all about curves, its straight lines almost invisible. A tale of two halves, its lower frame – if it can really be called that – is composed of impossibly delicate slices of black stained ash, which seem to loop and grow around the cushions above, flawlessly providing levelled support while making its own visual impression. The upholstered upper section is so sleek it looks naturally formed, the oval and cylindrical leather cushions impossibly smooth like something made in the digital world rather than reality. epic upholstered forms with a slick, minimal frame. The two cushion sections are rounded like a pair of pebbles eroded by time and slowly drawn together, their exaggerated size and quiet-yet-monumental curves at once indulgent and humble, emanating warmth and serenity. Perfect imperfection
Combining the organic with geometric precision, the Maxim Argile dining table by Pio and Tito Toso for Cattelan Italia melds a perfectly rounded, touch-me-smooth table top with a trio of alluring concave legs. Expertly crafted from liquid cement which is poured into a mould in the same way a sculpture is produced, when solidified the material has a gentle, tactile finish. The simple, oversized shapes imbue the design with a natural feel, its base akin to mysteriously enlarged petals or leaves creating a subtle yet striking statement.

Making an impression with its wing-like double backrest, finding strict linearity on the Aldora Sofa by Cristina Celestino for Moooi is like playing a long game of hide and seek. Its impressive backrest inspired by the arcing lines of Calla Lilies and prompting visions of pretty flying insects, the flowing flamboyant form is both somewhere to get comfortable on as well as an upholstered sculpture, bestowing joy and character on the room with its presence alone.

Tucked away at the entrance to the mystical Cornish Castle of Trematon sits a small lodge house – ‘Quercus Lodge’ – an unassuming octagonal building painted in a dusky cream. Nothing on the outside suggests what you will find within: a riot of pattern and colour, layered fabrics and wallpapers that draw you into a fantasy world of flowers and foliage. Here, the kitchen feels pared back by comparison to the other rooms, with its Huckleberry freestanding kitchen furniture uniquely customised for House of Hackney.
Beginning the latest project in the renovation of their home the Castle of Trematon, owners of House of Hackney Frieda Gormley and and Javvy M Royle approached Huckleberry to design and make a kitchen for the castle’s lodge house. Huckleberry’s Matt and Claire Podesta met Frieda and Javvy and quickly bonded over their shared ethos of sustainability and love of British-made design. And so the plan for the Quercus Lodge kitchen was born.
Huckleberry’s freestanding kitchen furniture is designed
Huckleberry creates a unique kitchen for House of Hackney
primarily as stand-alone pieces which emanate balance and proportion, but at the same time incorporate appliances, sinks and taps. It is made to look as though it could have been in the house for years, if not decades, completely comfortable in its surroundings. The family of furniture includes islands, dressers, base cabinets incorporating sinks, hobs and dishwashers, tall cupboards, plate racks and tables.
Creating kitchen furniture for this project was exciting especially incorporating the new range of House of Hackney paint and tiles. Huckleberry’s Scullery Bench has been given a House of Hackney twist including a decorative frieze, which is also used on the cooker hood, and finished off with hand turned oak acorn finials.
“Inspired by Georgian cabinetry and Arts and Crafts values, Huckleberry were the perfect people to create the kitchen for the Quercus Lodge,” says Frieda Gormley. “With sustainability at the heart of the brand, their distinctive, enduring design, quality British craftsmanship and responsibly sourced wood ensure each piece is made to last a lifetime; and the results are truly beautiful.”

MY LIFE MY ART
My art is my way of expressing myself. To find enlightenment with a creative piece of art that whispers soft and pleasing surrealism is something that I hold close to my life’s passion. Art has no shape, no real static movement. It’s flexible and molten which embodies the essence of creativity. You might think that it’s a strange way to describe my life’s work but it’s that my very true conscience talking. It’s my best shot at describing the way I approach my projects as a lighting designer.
My personal take on art is expressing why we are here. I’m driven by my passion to create objects that can reflect an obvious pleasurable presence. It’s not an easy task when you try to control it as a lighting designer, but given the tools of experience and understanding, expression starts to become fluid and flowing. It’s a
matter of conveying that message so that it’s observed from that same viewpoint, without too much verbal convincing. My hope is that you understand my approach encompassed with what intrigues me and how my train of thought develops. Suffice is to say, I love my work as I’m getting to know myself.
My pieces are specifically designed to work with your exact requirements – a work of art that will not lose its beauty. To preserve the uniqueness and artistic value of the chandeliers and luxury lighting, I do not use ready-made or off-the- shelf components, all parts are designed specifically for you. As a high end lighting designer I place great importance on the visual appeal of everything I design and create. I take care not to show the inner armature of the chandelier. All inner lighting is designed to light up as a 360-degree spread, unlike the offerings of many of my competitors. I take exceptional care to ensure the correct flow of light, without hot-spots by employing up to five times as many lamps than many of my competitors. In short, Rocco Borghese signature of distinction and name is synonymous with quality and elegance. We are the only glass lighting feature specialist with the ability to create a lifetime investment as individual as you.

Anyone who owns a period property will understand the challenges that it can present when it comes to energy efficiency. UK housing stock contains much older properties that have been in almost continual use for centuries. While this adds to the overall attractiveness of the built environment, it does mean that we need to think creatively to find solutions to modern challenges.
How do you improve the energy efficiency of an older property without damaging its aesthetic appeal?
