Taking place at Sandbanks, Britain’s premier beach location, the 2012 Championship will see England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales come together for the first time to compete on the on the original custom-made enclosed polo arena. e ideal spectator sport, beach polo offers a unique and accessible introduction for polo novices and an action-packed match for keen enthusiasts. Polo ponies are able to accelerate, stop and turn extremely quickly on the beach arena’s sand, creating a fast-paced, exhilarating game with the ball travelling at speeds of up to 100mph. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the English Channel, guests will have an unrivalled view of the polo whilst enjoying a cool crisp Asahi or glass of champagne. Bournemouth’s glorious seven miles of pristine golden sand have been the only destination in the UK to be announced as one of the top ten beach destinations in Europe and the best beach destination in the UK. So what is it about this beach that makes its sparkling aqua waters shine out against the competition? Of course miles of spectacular unspoilt coast- line helps… but the hard work that goes on behind the scenes is one of the main things that enables Bournemouth to remain as the UK’s premier beach destination.

Sir Percy Florence Shelley, the son of the famous romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, lived at Boscombe Manor for 40 years from 1849-1889 and played a very active part in the cultural development and progress of Boscombe. He had succeeded to the title of baronetcy of on the death of his grandfather, Sir Timothy Shelley, as his father Percy B. Shelley had drowned in the Gulf of Spezia in 1822 but the family estate, Field Place, Horsham, had become damp and uncared for, and land in Boscombe was cheap and had a more equitable climate and better for the health of his wife, Lady Jane Shelley - we take a look at the enchanting history of Boscombe and its Shelley connection... Summer days in England often make you think of escaping to the countryside and what better way to enjoy a wonderful day out, than to visit one of the best County Shows in the UK, set in the beautiful surroundings of the New Forest. Our theme for 2012 is the ‘Best of British’, which will be rolled out around the Showground. e minute you enter the Show you will be caught up in the fantastic atmosphere and you will find it difficult to know where to start there is so much to see – something for everyone! e Show began as a one day agricultural event, with little more than a tent and some rope, to which all horses, cattle, sheep and goats were tethered. How things have changed! Today the Show holds over 1500 horse and livestock classes, which include international, national and regional competitions. Enjoy your issue and see you again in August.

e "ILLUSION " fashion show is about so much more than just beautiful clothes on a catwalk. e majority of us face adversity at some point in our lives and all too often the way we look on the outside dictates how we feel on the inside. Sadly the fashion industry has long been associated with the perfect image few feel they can attain, and is often blamed for the rise in body image problems. e majority of the models in the show have reached that point in their life and have an inspirational story to tell. Jason Edwards, head designer at Crystal Adonis is more than aware of the challenges faced every day that can be a pivotal point in someone’s life. “Time and time again I see people reach that point whether it was my mother losing her hair during chemotherapy, my sudden weight gain, a friends sudden weight loss, the death of a loved one, issues of race, gender, sexuality or disfigurement. Societies attitude to the things we all face either breaks us or makes us look deep inside, discover that inner beauty, self love and respect and find out what is truly important in our lives. “ Crystal Adonis and MWAH Bournemouth have worked closely with two charity organisations. With the strong Olympic message of equality and self-worth there is a common thread running through those participating. e two charities involved are both, at

Help for Heroes, with whom many are familiar, help to rehabilitate and enable many of our service men and women to find their inner confidence and get back to everyday life after the wide variety of challenges they face whilst serving in the name of Queen and country. e Succeed Foundation, are on a mission to break the negative cycle which leads to many eating disorders and create a standard approach for dealing with them. A selection of the bespoke one-off Swarovski crystal embellished items created for the show have been donated to raise funds for both charities. behind the show is now one of the south’s leading names in make-up and hair loss solutions. Simone and her team, experts in the art of airbrush makeup, stepped up to the job of transforming the models, some of whom have never modelled before into catwalk sensations. With layers of beautiful clothing , hair pieces, make up and a splattering of Swarovski crystal the models have their war paint on ready for the show and that poignant last walk down the catwalk where in a thought provoking moment their battle is brought to the attention of the audience. A hair piece is removed to reveal a bald head and the revelation that beauty really is more than skin deep. Take just a second to think what someone else might be going through before we judge. We all have inner battles to overcome,
don't just put on your mask of designer clothes, make-up and hair, find your inner beauty and truly wear them.

ournemouth’s glorious seven miles of pristine golden sand have been the only destination in the UK to be announced as one of the top ten beach destinations in Europe and the best beach destination in the UK. So what is it about this beach that makes its sparkling aqua waters shine out against the competition? Of course miles of spectacular unspoilt coast- line helps… but the hard work that goes on behind the scenes is one of the main things that enables Bournemouth to remain as the UK’s premier beach destination. e Seafront team of Bournemouth Council are dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Bournemouth Beach and making sure it is a safe and relaxing environment for people to enjoy. In order to do this they remain constantly aware of the weather, ensuring staffing levels are adjusted accordingly (during peak season over 100 staff will be employed). Additionally, during the summer the beach is raked every morning by tractors and manually litter picked twice a day. Further to this, during the summer period there are cleaners present on the seafront 24 hours a day to help maintain 18

The Beautiful Bournemouth Beach the renowned high standards of cleanliness that Bournemouth Beach is known for. Seafront Rangers work 364 days a year to ensure all visitors to the beach have an enjoyable experience. As the safety of all those on the beach is a priority, RNLI lifeguards are on site along the seven miles of beach to protect all those enjoying a refreshing dip in the sea, or one of the many water-sport activities on offer. Another aspect of Bournemouth Beach that makes it stand out as a captivating destination are the many services which are on offer to visitors. Cliff lifts appear in the steeper areas of the beach, running from the bottom of the promenade up the cliff to the street at the top. ere is also the Bournemouth Land Train which has three
set routes, taking visitors to a variety of places including Bournemouth Pier, Alum Chine, Boscombe Pier and Portman Ravine. Bournemouth Beach is a vital asset to the town’s tourism trade, attracting an abundance of visitors each year. As a result £11 million was recently injected into the Seafront at Boscombe, creating state-of-the-art, designer beach ‘pods’, top-class water sports academies and funky new restaurants and bars sitting alongside a gleaming, newly refurbished Pier. Bournemouth seafront is home to the UK’s first beach hut and also impressively boasts around 2,000 more, running alongside the gloriously eventful promenade. As Bournemouth Beach provides such a beautiful setting it is often used to host
entertaining events, making it a hub of energy and atmosphere. e most prestigious of these is the sublime aviation event, the Bournemouth Air Festival, which is now into its fifth year. However many other events have been held on the beach including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and soon numerous people will gather to watch the Olympic torch make its way along Bournemouth’s seafront as part of its magical journey around the UK. charity was one of the first people to register as it was something she had always wanted to do. She said: “Skydiving for the hospice was the perfect opportunity to challenge myself with something that has always been a lifelong aim of mine and to raise much needed funds.” 2012 is Lewis-Manning Hospice’s 20th anniversary and they have recently moved into a brand new state of the art facility to expand their services which includes a day hospice, breathlessness and lymphoedema clinics and a 23 bedded palliative care unit. e hospice also features a hairdressers, gym and outstanding views over looking Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island and the Purbecks. Maria added: “e hospice is a peace haven for many of our
patients. When they come here they receive care and advice from our specialist palliative nurses and are taught how to cope with their illnesses. It also gives them time out to socialise with other people in similar situations to them.” Lewis-Manning Hospice receives around a third of its income from the local PCT, and the remaining £50,000 a month is raised through their 10 hospice charity shops, fundraising initiatives and events, legacies and their in house lottery. Stephen Nimmo at Chester Pearce Associates has also signed up to the skydive for a very personal reason, he said: “My grandfather attended the day hospice and I have seen the incredible work being done to assist patients and their families. I have continued to support the
hospice as it is an important cause that I feel passionately about so when the offer to skydive came up I jumped at the chance!” Several other local people have also decided to push themselves to the limits and take the ‘fall’ including Lucy Fowler-Tutt from Jobshop UK, Jane Edwards and Simon Collins from Aldridge Brownlee and Rachel Sharp from NFU Mutual. e charity is looking for more people to skydive to raise even more funds and awareness for their cause, if you would like to book your place please call the Lewis-Manning Hospice fundraising team on 01202 701 000 or visit www.lewis-manning.co.uk for more details ■

Boscombe’ s ShelleyConnection
S
ir Percy Florence Shelley, the son of the famous romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, lived at Boscombe Manor for 40 years from 1849-1889 and played a very active part in the cultural development and progress of Boscombe. He had succeeded to the title of baronetcy of on the death of his grandfather, Sir Timothy Shelley, as his father Percy B. Shelley had drowned in the Gulf of Spezia in 1822 but the family estate, Field Place, Horsham, had become damp and uncared for, and land in Boscombe was cheap and had a more equitable climate and better for the health of his wife, Lady Jane Shelley. She was always very proud to belong to the Shelley family and for many years she had been a devotee of the poetry of her father-in-law and a great admirer of his wife, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. In Boscombe Manor she created a Sanctum in her boudoir in memory of the great poet. e ceiling was painted in stars, under which children of visitors spoke in whispers because it was a special place where the relics of the poet, memorabilia and Percy’s many writings were carefully kept. Sir Percy was very different from his brilliant, emotional father who wrote many lyrical and philosophical poems and who felt passionately about the many wrongs in existence at that time. His son was calmer, more placid, though fond of sailing like his poet father but was mainly interested in every aspect of the theatre: in the production, acting, and writing of plays and even in the painting of scenery and designing of sets. His butler was often shocked and even threatened to give notice when he saw his master surrounded by pots of paint and carpenter’s tools lying on the floor of the

theatre. At first Sir Percy built a small theatre in the grounds outside the Manor, but later a very fine one was incorporated into the building in about 1866. It had a large, well-equipped stage, an orchestral pit and a drop scene of Casa Magni, San Terenzo, the last home of his father and from where he was so tragically drowned in a terrifying storm. On the walls were Italian scenes painted by Italian artists. In the theatre itself were autographed photographs of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and the ex-Queen of Romania, while a bust of Sir Henry Irving, presented by the actor to Lady Shelley, occupied a place of honour. e Shelley eatre was the very first theatre in Bournemouth and put on many plays, several written by Sir Percy, in aid of charity. Many famous actors performed at the theatre, whilst a writer at the time noted that Sir Percy’s new and very pretty theatre was an evergreen oasis in that desert of dullness, the fashionable watering place of Bourne (the original name for Bournemouth). Boscombe was developing and due to the efforts of local people including Sir Percy and Lady Jane Shelley it was even considered to be a rival to Bournemouth. When Bournemouth had its first pier, Boscombe decided they should have one and applied to the Bournemouth Commissioners for assistance. As this was not forthcoming they set up their own Pier Company with Sir Percy and other interested local people. In October 1888 there was great jubilation as Lady Shelley fixed the first pile, weighing about one ton, which was linked to a stout rope fixed to a steam engine. e engine was started by silk ribbon which was pulled by Lady Shelley to the accompaniment of great cheers. Flags were flying everywhere

some with the inscriptions ‘prosperity to Boscombe’ and ‘long live Sir Percy and Lady Shelley’. After the death of her husband in 1889 Lady Jane devoted much of her time to idolizing the works of her father-in-law, ensuring that the world recognized the genius of the poet, and erasing articles that were not favourable to him, as there had been many incorrect articles written about Shelley. Jane had created a cult of Shelley worshippers at Boscombe Manor. She decided to become an author herself and wrote her own Shelley Memorials and in 1882 she published four volumes entitled Shelley and Mary. Lady Jane died in 1899 and her adopted niece described her extraordinary vitality in which lay her great charm. All the Shelley documents and memorabilia so lovingly kept at Boscombe Manor were divided between her heir, Shelley Scarlett, the Bodleian Library in Oxford, and Sir Percy’s cousin, Edward, heir to the baronetcy. In St Peter’s churchyard, Bournemouth, is the famous Shelley grave. Here Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley who died in l851, the second and devoted wife of the poet and the mother of Sir Percy, author of Frankenstein is buried. Her body was brought from Chester Place, London, where she had been living. Mary’s parents William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, both radical freethinkers and writers were originally buried in St Pancras cemetery, but when a railway was authorised through the churchyard their bodies were brought to Bournemouth to be laid besides their daughter. When Sir Percy died in 1889 the heart of the poet, which had apparently been kept at Boscombe Manor in the Sanctum, was said to be buried with him in the famous grave. e story goes that the heart had been snatched from the flames during Shelley’s Viking-type funeral in Italy. Lastly, the devoted daughter-in-law was laid to rest by the side of her husband and along with those she had cherished for a long time. After the death of his mother, Sir Percy arranged for a life-size memorial statue in white marble of his parents to be made, which he hoped would be placed in St Peter’s Church, but the vicar refused, claiming that it would make the church a show place. Fortunately, the Vicar of Christchurch Priory had no such reservations and the fine statue can be seen there today. Prior to her death in 1899 Lady Shelley had been negotiating with the Borough of Bournemouth the gift of 6 acres of ground at the cliff top, a little to the east of

Boscombe Chine, to the public forever and the Cliff Gardens, artistically laid out by the Corporation, were fully dedicated in June 1900. Much of this Boscombe estate was sold off for development over the years and the road names are a reminder of the Shelley’s connection with this area: Percy, Florence, Shelley and Wollstonecraft Roads are obvious but less so are Byron, Grantley, Horace, Westby and Watkin Roads which are named after friends of the Shelleys. Boscombe Manor, or Shelley Manor, as it was known has been saved. In 1918 it was home to an exclusive girls school Grovely Manor nicknamed ‘Shelley land’ and during the Second World War it was the headquarters for the Civil Defence for Bournemouth. After the war, having been purchased by Bournemouth Council, the house was used by Bournemouth College of Technology and later by Poole College of Art and Design. In 1979 Boscombe Manor housed the Casa Magni Shelley Collection started by Margaret Brown on the 150th anniversary of the death of the poet. Later the museum was renamed e Shelley Rooms. In 1999 Shelley’s theatre was given a listed Grade II status. e Art College had moved out by then and the Shelley Museum’s artefacts had been put in storage in the Russell Cotes Museum. Although the remaining estate around the house, Shelley Park, had seen some improvements and the facilities of this open space were well used, the mansion was empty and slowly deteriorating. In 2002 there was a campaign to stop the demolition of Boscombe Manor and the Friends of Shelley Manor was formed to continue the fight. 2005 saw a new chapter in the mansion’s history when it was sold to Charles Higgins Primary Care Ltd and renovation works began. Four years later part of the building was opened as a doctors’ surgery. e listed theatre is currently being restored to its former glory and is to be used as a community arts venue when this work is completed. ive into holiday mode with a swimsuit to be seen in. Lisa Haynes reveals the bikinis and one-pieces for poolside perfection. As if the annual pressure to obtain a beach body isn't enough, this summer we have the Olympic Games with all those honed and toned bodies in skimpy costumes to contend with. According to a recent survey for Moontide swimwear, 53% of women start thinking about how they'll look in their costumes more than two weeks before their holiday, with 15% worrying more than a month beforehand. But don't fret if finding the right swimsuit is turning into a major event - let your figure lead the way to a winning bikini or one-piece. Whatever your shape, there's a costume out there that will disguise your hot spots and flaunt your best bits to the max. Forget all those apples and pears references and find your ideal swimsuit with our refreshing guide to body shapes:

Fishtail Plaits 1 Prep the hair with a product that will add definition when plaiting, such as SP Exqusite Gloss. is kind of look works best on day old hair, so it’s not too slippery. 2 Taking a side ponytail, split hair into 3 separate sections, making the middle section the biggest and taking one of the smaller sections from the side, wrap this over the top of the middle section and continue either side, taking the side section over the top of the middle and folding it in. Continue using this technique, folding the smaller sections into the thicker middle section so it disappears and work all the way to the bottom, securing with a band 3 e trend is towards looks that are unstructured and undone, so rather than having a clean, defined finish, push the hair back with your fingers for a looser, more haphazard feel to the look and use a finishing product such as SP Perfect Hold Hairspray to hold in place all day. Straight to lustrous Curls For a quick and easy change from daytime to glamorous evening look, transform totally straight hair into lustrous curls using straightening irons. 1 Start with completely dry hair. 2 Wet hair won't curl at all, and damp hair won't curl as well. 3 Spray hair with heat protection spray and comb through. is creates a protective barrier between the hair and the iron so that the hair doesn't 'frizzle' and burn (highly recommended). 4 Beginning with the first section of hair about 1" wide, and holding it at the ends, place the iron vertically over the piece. Gently closing the plates and lightly gripping the hair, make sure to rotate the iron slowly as you glide the iron down toward the ends. If you want bigger curls, take larger sections of hair, and use the same rotating motion. FAREWELL TO 40 YEARS OF GLASSES BREAKTHROUGH LASER CATARACT SURGERY LAUNCHES IN UK THAT CAN DISSOLVE CATARACTS IN SECONDS AND IS FAR SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL SURGERY

illions of British people can look forward to a lifetime of better sight, thanks to a revolutionary treatment that has just launched in the UK. Offering safer, more accurate and less invasive treatment for cataracts. For many years, cataracts have been seen as an unavoidable and unpleasant side effect of ageing. Current techniques for cataract removal, which centre on high frequency ultrasound to achieve ‘phacoemulsification’, nevertheless require a 3mm incision with a blade, before the cataract is broken up. Where the London Eye Hospital differs from this treatment is in the microscopic detail of the procedure. Using a FemtoSecond cataract laser surgeons create a 3D model of the eye at close to micron levels of accuracy. Laser pulses which last one quadrillionth of a second then dissolve the cataract and also create a tiny incision through which to remove it all without a needles or blade or any discomfort. is new approach to cataract surgery also reduces the risk of complications such as damage to the fine membrane surrounding the lens and – as the incision is so small – also the risk of infection. As such, this new procedure represents a huge increase in safety and reduces the risks of surgery even further. THE PATIENT’S VIEW One London Eye Hospital patients, Patricia Paul, had Light adjustable lens surgery and was delighted by the results. It was performed by Mr Qureshi, BSc MBBS FRCS (Ophth.), Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Medical Director at e London Eye Hospital. "Not
only was my procedure a complete success, but Mr Qureshi was an absolute pleasure to work with," Patricia says. "He always took the time to explain everything, and was never in a rush. I now have the best vision that I've ever had. It's amazing how sharp and colourful everything looks." At the age of 10, Philip Scarisbrick was diagnosed short-sighted and started wearing glasses. Forty years later, he had Light Adjustable Lens Surgery and – as if by magic - his sight has been restored. “It really has transformed my life,” says Philip “Once I’d had the operation, I could drive around without glasses, go into a restaurant and order from the menu. is was never possible before.” For further information please contact: London Eye Hospital Tel: +44 207 060 2602 Email:info@londoneyehospital.com www.londoneyehospital.com ■

utting back or being creative, the kitchen cupboard holds countless beauty remedies. Lisa Haynes reveals the treatments you can whisk up. Sienna Miller is a style icon and beauty idol - and now she's also an unofficial ambassador for Heinz. When the actress recently revealed that tomato ketchup was her beauty saviour, sales probably soared. Known for her honey-blonde locks, Sienna recalled a hair dye disaster involving henna when she was going dark for a film role. "It was the worst thing I could have done as it coats the follicles so that nothing else can penetrate. I ended up having to put ketchup in it for about a year to get rid of the green tinge," she told Marie Claire magazine. Home remedies aren't a new celebrity fad. ey've been used for centuries and, just like Sienna, you can raid the larder for some DIY hair rejuvenation and rescues. "Sometimes our hair needs a bit of a boost and often, whilst luxury products will work and smell amazing, your quick fix could be sitting in the kitchen cupboard," says Jason Cocking, celebrity hairdresser and director of Lisa Shepherd London (www.lisashepherd.co.uk). So if your hair's crying out for some at-home TLC, head for the store cupboard and try some of these treatments: 50
J U LY 2 0 1 2
OLIVE OIL e latest Argan oil-based potions can be pretty pricey but traditional olive oil is handy on your hair as well as on salads. "Apply extra virgin olive oil as a pre-treatment," Cocking advises. "is can be used cold or heated to a relaxing warm temperature. Leave on for 20 minutes and then shampoo out. It may take a couple of washes but you'll certainly notice the difference." If you have fine hair, an olive oil spray is a much lighter option for shinier, healthier tresses. Avoid any oil-based products if you have hair extensions as this may loosen the bonds. SEA SALT You can banish those embarrassing flakes of dandruff on your shoulders with the help of this everyday condiment. "Give your head a good exfoliation using sea salt," says Cocking. "is will get rid of all the dry flakes, whilst a good rinse afterwards with warm water and shampoo will make sure any residue is dissolved out." VINEGAR Fragile and colour-treated hair is particularly tangle-prone. If knots are your nemesis, all you need is a product with a low pH, according to Cocking. "To untangle tricky hair the best product to work its magic is white vinegar," he says. If the smell reminds you of fish and chips, try pink grape juice as an alternative. Apply to your hair for 15 minutes and comb through with a wide comb, washing out well. CHARCOAL If you've got dark hair, salt and pepper roots are so noticeable. Strawberry blonde Nicole Kidman has regularly been spotted on the red carpet sporting grey roots, but the colour contrast is less obvious. "If you have dark hair and struggle to cover your greys in between dyes or colourist appointments, try using charcoal" Cocking suggests. "Apply to dry hair, being careful to blend it in, and nobody will ever know." MAYONNAISE/EGG WHITES For super-shiny hair, a pure protein remedy is the answer. "As a classic rescue remedy, apply mayonnaise straight from the fridge to penetrate your hair, or try whisking up an egg white mask," Cocking suggests. "Leave on your hair and wrap it up for about 20 minutes." Wash out thoroughly with lukewarm water and your hair will look thoroughly nourished. SEAWATER Pack an empty spray bottle in your beach bag if you're after the mermaid look. Cocking advises: "Bottle up the seawater and spray into your roots, giving you instant volume. Alternatively, scrunch it into your curls to get that summer-ready beach look. "If you hate the smell of salt water, add rose water or petals to the mix, making you look and smell heavenly." ■

SHAPE UP FOR SUMMER TRANSFORM YOUR BODY IN TIME FOR BIKINI SEASON. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO BE A HOLIDAY HEAD-TURNER.
Bad news for all those planning a slinky swimsuit regime - the longest day of summer has officially been and gone. So if you haven't already started thinking about your beach body, now's definitely the time to mark your bikini SOS plan on the calendar, especially if last year's costume is feeling a little too snug! e dreaded flesh-flaunting season means bikini angst for more than half of women (53%) who say they feel less confident about their bodies in the summer months, a survey by Nurture skincare reveals. Yet dedicating just an extra hour or so per week to your beauty routine can really yield results. TONE TACTICS More than 54% of women feel most self-conscious about their stomachs, according to Slendertone. Being an enthusiastic gym bunny is the first step (or skip/jog/sprint) towards a slimline figure, but achieving a flat stomach doesn't start and end with exercise.

"Cut out sugar, alcohol and carbs and start taking a probiotic supplement approximately two weeks before your holiday to help boost levels of friendly bacteria in your digestive system, which can help reduce bloating," advises Fiona Hunter, nutritionist for Simple cosmetics. Avoid faddy diets, too, if you want to keep your skin smooth and supple. "Yo-yo dieting is bad for your skin because you end up becoming deficient in key nutrients, which can loosen the skin's elasticity and make it sag," she says. Familiarise yourself with a circulation-boosting body brush and follow with a firming cream and twice-daily massage to help keep your skin taught and toned. SKIN PERFECTING Even the slimmest of us suffer with imperfections that can make stripping off at the pool a daunting affair. Cellulite and stretch marks are linked with hormonal and genetic factors, so some people are much more prone than others. Stretch marks usually appear after rapid weight gain or loss, with the most common affected areas being breasts, bum, thighs, hips and stomach. "For best results treat stretch marks when they first appear pink and are early in development," recommends Sally Penford, education manager at the International Dermal Institute. "Moisturise three times a day to help the skin become more pliant, hydrated and better able to stretch. Look for skin products that contain vitamin E, cocoa butter, shea butter, omega-3, wheat germ oil and hyaluronic acid." ere are laser treatments available which promise to blast away cellulite and stretch marks, but there are no guarantees they'll vanish completely. SMOOTH OPERATOR ere's nothing worse than looking down from your sunlounger and seeing flashes of unsightly stubble on your legs. Ditch the razor blade. Sunlight exposes re-growth even more than usual, so if you haven't had time to squeeze in lengthy and expensive laser hair removal sessions, waxing will keep body hair at bay for longer than shaving.

Alley Laundry, Parissa's waxing guru, says: "e first time you wax will likely be the most sensitive but it gets easier over time. Any discomfort only lasts for a couple seconds and the smooth results last for weeks. "It's all about choosing the right product for you. If you're a beginner, I suggest starting with pre-waxed strips that are ready to use - just press on and zip off - no heating or fussing required." Wax strips are also suitcase friendly so ideal for touch-ups when travelling. GET YOUR GLOW ON If all fails on your bikini body mission, cheat with a self-tan. Darker skin and shading in the right areas automatically makes your limbs look leaner. After you've applied a base layer of subtle tan, wait 10 minutes for it to soak in before applying a second tactical coat of spray tan on the areas you want to slim. "To create the illusion of a slimmer waist, spray the self-tan directly onto the hip area and around onto the side navel," suggests Famous Dave celebrity tanning artist Amanda Harrington. "Wipe in large sweeping motions with a tanning mitt to blend into your base layer of tanning cream. Spray onto the upper sides of the navel to create the darker edges down the sides of your silhouette." e same principles apply to create the illusion of longer legs. Spray tan onto the sides of the thigh from hip to knee, then use long strokes up and down with your tanning mitt until completely blended. Also spray the back of the calves, and upwards, to slim down the backs of your legs.
TRIED & TESTED Give your beach body a boost with a daily firming potion. Our testers try out three variants: Nivea Q10 Plus Firming Body Oil, £6.63 (nationwide) is oil is a bit of a miracle because it actually did what it promised. My skin felt firmer after applying it for about two weeks. Despite the oily feel on application, it didn't feel greasy for long and smells heavenly. 4/5 ETAT PUR B60 Firming Reshaping Body Care, £14.70 (www.etatpur.co.uk) e cream absorbed quickly into the skin and I could feel the solution instantly tighten. After several weeks of use, my tum and bum felt a lot firmer and my thighs looked more toned. 4/5 Darphin Nourishing and Firming Velvet Cream, £39 (0870 034 2566/www.darphin.co.uk) Despite looking thick and buttery in the pot, this luxurious cream absorbed quickly into my skin so I'm able to get dressed immediately. My skin felt firmer after use but sadly the product didn't work any long-term miracles. 3/5 BUY IT NOW Celebrate the start of Wimbledon season with Alberto Balsam's delicious limited edition, and lather up with the Strawberries & Cream Shampoo and Conditioner, £1.07 each (nationwide). BEAUTY BULLETIN Home maintenance Single ladies spend 30% longer getting ready than those who have said "I do". Unmarried women spend an average of 11 minutes longer preening before heading into work, compared to a married woman, according to a new survey by Scholl. Anna Kovaleva, Scholl spokeswoman, says: "e research shows that single women act on the desire to look great from top-to-toe and prioritise their time accordingly." Married women spend 24 minutes on their hair and make-up for a big night out, compared to 42 minutes for singletons. hen we say that someone has 20/20 vision we assume that person has normal eyesight. At least that’s what I’ve always assumed. But what it really means is that when an object is twenty feet away we see it as twenty feet away and can therefore avoid or bump into it as we choose. Imagine having 20/2 vision. In other words, eyes like a hawk. For a hawk could read a book at twenty feet away - if it could read that is. I was thinking about this and the keen eye that a collector will develop as he or she becomes more discriminating in whatever they collect, especially smaller items like snuff boxes, miniature portraits or enamels from Limoges, Bilston or Battersea. Enamelling is of course the most luxurious way that porcelains are decorated, and all this came about as I was able recently to add some more exceptional examples of 18th century porcelain tea cups and saucers to the collection I have been building for a friend and client over the last five years. What began as an unusual gift for Christmas – a charming early Worcester tea bowl and saucer for less than £200 – now worth double – has now become a serious study of the finest English and European hard-paste porcelain pieces, decorated by renowned artists in such detail as can only be really appreciated under a magnifying glass or – as the owner has said – with the eye of a hawk. e prices of these run into several thousands of pounds but are of such undeniable beauty in quality and artistic depiction that they defy valuation in a purely monetary sense. On some the gold is applied so thickly but finely as to give edges and borders a jewel-like sparkle around scenes of estuary and marine activities with figures and ships or battling soldiers or pastoral set-pieces with exotic

Under the magnifying glass even the smallest of figures can be seen to have an expression that fits whatever they are doing while ships have the finest hairlines for rigging and far off townships have churches with the minutest of towers. e scenes were sometimes copied from full size oil paintings by living or past artists, particularly those of harbours, seascapes and pastoral subjects while flora and fauna were often purely imaginative; flamboyant and asymmetrical and in complete contrast to those inspired by the classical influence that was to overshadow the last thirty years of the 18th century. e earliest European hard-paste porcelains were produced in Meissen, Germany during the first quarter of the 18th century. is disrupted the hitherto monopoly of China on its production and

So highly prized were the secrets of it manufacture that Bottger and his fellow workers were kept almost under house-arrest, but of course secrets will out and people will escape and soon factories in France and Austria emerged to compete. Nevertheless the Meissen works, with its logo of the crossed swords introduced n 1720, dominated the styles of shape and decoration of all European porcelain until the

Chris has lived and worked on safari in Africa and now teaches in England. I was fortunate to meet Chris by chance, since when we have put together and mounted a highly successful exhibition of his work together with that of another mutual friend and wildlife artist Richard Smith at Woburn Abbey. So successful indeed that another is already in the diary and scheduled for 21st September to 1st October. If you are any where near and would like to visit, please let me know and we will all keep a sharp eye out for you. Incidentally, if you are wondering about the ‘Goshawk and Jay’ and where is the Jay. e Goshawk has just eaten it. All that remains are two little blue tail feathers and a few white ones on the branch. You need a sharp eye and a keen sense of humour for this man’s pictures ■

HOUSE GARDEN SAIL AWAY STYLE A home by the shore may be out of reach but a crisp blue and white theme will quickly conjure a care-free, coastal style. A chunky sofa and armchair in pale wood with plump sky blue cushions and a matching coffee table with built-in storage space could be irresistible: the Blooma Cavallo coffee table set, £699 from B&Q. Pull the look together with blue accessories from Matalan which has blue picnic ware, from £4.50 a set, a blue and white boathouse-style birdhouse, £8 (currently only available in stores), and lantern, £6. Add a final jaunty seaside feel with a blue and white stripe seat cushion, £45, from e White Company. It can also be used as a floor cushion. Budget buy: A blue Toronto four-seater outdoor dining set in white powder coated steel and mesh, including blue seat pads and parasol, £299, and bench, £99, both from John Lewis. EXOTIC RATTAN A tight budget may mean you can't indulge in a holiday in a hot spot but you could replicate the atmosphere outside your back door. Rattan furniture, with its woven appearance and rich dark shades, is evocative of verandas and sultry settings. A generous-sized curved single sofa with footrest is currently reduced online from £999 to £699 from Homebase. Alternatively, make a statement with a weather-resistant high-backed rattan chair, £325 from Next. Home bars are enjoying a big revival, so follow the cocktail crowd and invest in a waterproof Sicilia set, black rattan bar and four stools, £795 from Alexander Francis. It might melt the credit card but you could make a statement with an Alexander Rose ocean day bed with roof, £2,299 from Heal's, and then accessorise with zingy orange and blue stripe Zanzibar cushions, £25 for a floor cushion from Marks & Spencer. Budget buy: A synthetic rattan Havana collection, including seat pads, sofa, £499, armchair, £249, coffee table, £149, and side table, £99, all from Marks & Spencer. NATURALLY ELEGANT Celebrate the beauty of natural materials such as wood and stone for a patio scheme which will complement and blend with its outdoor surroundings. Capture upmarket designer style with Conran's excellent range of garden furniture for Marks & Spencer which focuses on comfort and elegance. Its high-back Faulks sofa, in teak interlaced with pewter-coloured tape, includes seat pads, and is £999. e matching armchair is £699, and footstool, £399. Small square patterned tea light holders, in a variety of colours, are £2.99 each from Homebase. Budget buy: Director's chair, £30 and wooden table, £40, both from Sainsbury's. One of this summer's winning products will definitely be a cool bar, £59.99 from Lakeland, which is a drinks cooler, cocktail table and coffee table all in one. Simply raise the top to create a cocktail table and fill the cooler section beneath with ice and cold drinks, or leave the lid in the lower position and use as an outdoor coffee table.

URBAN CHIC Sleek, contemporary outdoor furniture transforms a patio into a sophisticated sanctuary. Less-is-more must be the guiding rule with this look. Make a focal point with a day bed. A Blooma Wake black metal garden day bed, with grey cushions, £499 from B&Q, is a stunner. For divine dining it's hard to beat a handsome Palma six-seater dining set, with a cappuccino-coloured glass table top, which is on offer online at £499 (formerly £699) from Homebase. Shade from the sun is a must: overhanging parasol in cream, £79.99. Add occasional seating - a barrel seat, in galvanised steel, £145 from Garden Trading, would be in keeping with this style. pread over 25’000 square feet, Chaplins scour the international design scene to display over 180 of the biggest and most exciting European furniture and lighting brands including B&B Italia, Cassina, Ligne Roset, Molteni&C and Reflex Angelo, to name but a few. All these wonderful collections are held under one roof, making it an inspiring one-stop solution for your entire home furnishing needs. Managing Director, Simon Chaplin is the second generation to take control of what is a family run business. Simon’s fascination stems back to his youth, “I was fortunate enough to grow up in a furniture family so even though I was not working, I was learning through osmosis!” Simon’s vision when taking over the Chaplins dynasty was to not only showcase the largest retail space showing high-end contemporary furniture and design in the UK, but to also build a concierge service around it, offering their clients a fully tailored package from the building stage to the finishing touches. He goes on to explain, “Running a business enables me to build a team that I value who share the same design ethos. Furniture runs in my blood, It is not a business for numbers although they always have to add up! It is a business that has to be led by passion or the end result will reflect this.” As an independent run store all Chaplins staff have a background in design and are qualified to give you the fullest possible assistance, which is friendly, expert and efficient, taking your personal wishes into account. Simon goes on to say, “e love of design can be seen in every element of our customers’ lives, from the cars they drive to the watches they wear to the houses they live in. It is our skill of interpretation using these outwards signs which enable us to connect with our client base.” When asked what makes Chaplins unique to other furniture stores Simon explains “Working with over 180 design houses, it allows us to edit collections rather than be dictated to by a single brand as many furniture stores around Europe are. is reflects in the individuality of our displays and crosses over to our client’s homes. At Chaplins we enjoy a freedom to express our love for design and to push boundaries and trends quickly, without having to run through and constantly analyse figures." If all the fabulous pieces on display in this design heaven proves too much for you, Chaplins also offer a ‘Home Design Service’ as many of their elegant storage systems for bedrooms and offices require an expert level of planning, which naturally they provide. is includes full floor plans, plus delivery and installation which is always carried out by their own team of fully trained fitters who know how to handle furniture and realise the importance of each piece, protecting and caring for it throughout delivery and installation as if it was their own. As well as working on projects throughout the UK, Chaplins work all over the world. Chaplins' brand new showroom at the internationally renowned Chelsea Harbour Design Centre, provides an ideal environment for designers and architects to meet with one of their experienced design team. Recent projects have included a 40 million Euro home in Cap Ferrat, South of France and 68,000 sq ft mansion in Dubai. However they are just at home working on a TV room in the quiet suburbs, which surround them. So what does Simon predict will be the next big trend in contemporary furniture design? “I’d like to think great interiors are timeless. An interior should reflect an individual’s personality and lifestyle more than current trends." Although Chaplins are very proud of their showrooms in Hatch End, Middlesex and Chelsea Harbour, London they also appreciate that buying trends are changing and people are using the internet for both research purposes and to make the occasional purchase. e Chaplins website (www.chaplins.co.uk) and new App for the iphone/ipad are well worth the visit. As well as stylish furniture and accessories, they feature a trend-led section full of inspiring ideas and product news.
Simon finishes up by saying "we have worked with clients in the Sandbanks area for many years and our delivery teams can be seen as often there as in our own locality! Our furniture is perfectly suited to many of the individual and more contemporary homes in the area" For more information about Chaplins please call 020 8421 1779, email sales@chaplins.co.uk, or visit www.chaplins.co.uk ■

How well has it gone so far? We have been delighted with the comments we have received. We get as excited as those who buy our pictures. One young couple wrote “Our first real picture-thank you”. Perhaps not surprisingly it was a Richard Price oil with the backdrop of Brownsea Island - just like our first purchase! 41 East Street Corfe Castle BH20 5EE 01929 480095 contact@galleryat41.com www.galleryat41.com
A DREAM COME TRUE THE GALLERY AT 41 IN CORFE CASTLE OPENED IN MAY. WE ASKED THE OWNERS STEVE AND CHRIS CLARKE TO TELL US MORE ABOUT IT. 'REFLECTIONS' BY RICHARD PRICE
What made you want to open a fine art gallery in the midst of a recession? For us it is a dream come true - but also a hard- headed decision. After many years of admiring and purchasing original art we wanted to work with artists and sell their work. And then we saw this beautiful house with shop attached in the unique village of Corfe Castle. After much renovation we now have our gallery. What is special about your gallery? We provide a high quality space for original contemporary art from both new and established professional Dorset based artists and all the 14 painters and 2 sculptors we currently showcase live in Dorset. We know most of our visitors will not be buying a picture today but we want to make them feel welcome and give them time to appreciate the work and picture it in their own home. How did you choose your artists? We had a year to research and visit artists and galleries. Purbeck and Dorset Art Weeks were invaluable as so many wonderful and varied artists opened their studios. Many recommended other artists. We choose work that we would love to buy ourselves and that we feel, instinctively, others will also love. Our feed back from customers has been very positive so far.

Much of the work reflects the beauty and changing moods of the landscape, seascape and life of Dorset in both representational and abstract paintings. We also show works that reflect the artist’s wider travels together with still life and figurative paintings. Our own first purchase in London was an oil painting by Richard Price ROI of the sunset across Poole harbour to Brownsea Island, a view that never fails to lift our spirits as we know we are coming home to Purbeck. We are very pleased that Richard is showing his work in our gallery. Amongst our other wonderful artists, we are also very fortunate to have beautiful pastels by Felicity House PS, John Bowen’s atmospheric and detailed pictures of Corfe Castle, David Atkins dramatic land and seascapes and Tony Kerin’s wonderfully observed paintings. We also have evocative award winning figurative sculptures by Moira Purver ASWA and Sue Lansbury. For those who are looking for craftwork we sell carefully selected and beautifully made wood, glass, ceramics and jewellery, including Dorothy Michel’s handmade ceramic necklaces and Fabian Maddison’s beautiful anniversary boxes, heirlooms of the future.

Dare to bare
Dare to bare this summer in the home, as natural materials such as wood, stone and bleached fabrics enjoy a renaissance. Gabrielle Fagan finds out how to create a tranquil pared-down interior. Stripping off and baring all isn't simply confined to the beach this summer - the most fashionable homes are celebrating an unadorned back-to-nature style. ink rooms in a neutral palette where the focus is on wood, either bleached or showing the beauty of its grain, together with stone, complemented by pure cotton and linen fabrics, and wool throws or carpets. Colour tones are subtle, interest is provided in the varying textures and it's a serene, uncluttered 'less is more' approach. While it may fly in the face of the current passion for colour and decorative extravagance, it's perfect for those who want a calm, tranquil interior whose appeal never dates. "e natural home is a place where nature meets interiors, and it's a celebration of a home that's sensual, personal and imperfect," says art director and stylist, Hans Blomquist who's created the look in his own home and for many of his clients. "Materials used in the natural home such as wood, stone, concrete and metal are allowed to age in their own time and are paired with antique and vintage objects where their wear and tear adds to their charm." He reveals the simple steps to create this unpretentious, homely effect in his new book, e Natural Home which also provides a through-the-keyhole-view of the style in homes throughout the world. "is is far removed from the bright colour trend which is currently dominating," he acknowledges. "But I think we're all longing for something more warm and inviting and where things have a spontaneity and are not so styled. 64
J U LY 2 0 1 2
"is look is about interiors which have clearly been decorated and loved over the years, and where things just seem like they have fallen into place." Embrace 'natural' now and you'll be ahead of the game decor-wise, because this look hits the high street in the autumn. Stores such as Marks & Spencer, Next and House of Fraser are focusing on this trend, with ranges which would suit ultra-fashionable loft-style rooms with exposed brick walls and varnished timber floors, or any home where the emphasis is on functionality and comfort. "Our Clerkenwell design theme marries tweed fabrics, checks and heavy woollen textures with hardwearing industrial materials to create a cosy look with a modern edge," says Sally Bendelow, head of home design at Marks & Spencer, whose new ranges launch in August. "Splashes of colour and fun nature motifs lift a look that is otherwise quite masculine in feel." So whatever the temperature outside, dare to bare at home and do what comes naturally. AWAKEN WALLS Banish thoughts of over-elaborate decoration for walls; these are the backdrop for a pared-back scheme and should be decorated accordingly. Minimal change is needed if you're lucky enough to have exposed brickwork, polished or aged plaster, or smooth walls which just need a skim of paint. Strip back, paint or, more quirkily, paper with pages from vintage newspapers, or make a feature wall with a collection of sepia-coloured postcards or vintage prints. "Nature's an amazing inspiration for the colours for these rooms and it can range from off-white to deep charcoal grey," says Blomquist who began his career in Sweden and whose style is rustic

Scandinavian. "I always find myself returning to a subdued palette made up of colours found in the natural world - wet sand, earth, bark, dried flax, thunderclouds, fields of wheat, bare branches and vivid spring growth." Tip: Using muted and sombre colours will create a soothing atmosphere and the perfect background for brighter colour or areas of pattern. If your home lacks natural light, opt for a paler neutral scheme, but dark walls will throw into relief lighter coloured furnishings and objects. Go natural: Andrew Martin's collection of wallpapers could have been made for this look. It features papers which mimic the appearance of stacked logs, such as Lumberjack. Atlantic replicates a cement wall, and Isambard, a lead-lined panel. Papers costs £69.60. Wooden slats are replicated on a wall mural in JWWalls's Vertical Slats 00399, from £80, while John Lewis has a wood planking-effect mural, Mr Perswall Forest Feel Knock On Wood, £248. Nature's gentle neutrals have been captured in Dulux's shades, Bleached Lichen 2, and Wholemeal Honey 5, both in its Tailor Made Colour range. Matt emulsion, £21.69 for 2.5 litres. FABULOUS FABRICS Fabrics made from natural fibres are an essential for the natural home, but beyond that there are no rights and wrongs. "Textiles bring softness and warmth to any interior and I use them in every room, as

loose covers on chairs and sofas, for tablecloths, as cosy woollen blankets or just folded and piled upon a chair as a still life," says Blomquist. "When it comes to colour, I love neutral undyed linens, because I like the range of hues from flax to ecru to grey, or cottons bleached by age and constant washing." He's also drawn to darker shades such as charcoal grey, earthy brown and faded blue-black. Tip: For texture interest combine both fine and loose weaves with bold prints. Simple graphic patterns, faded florals and botanical prints also work well in a natural home. Go natural: e new Naturals collection by fabric specialists, JAB Anstoetz, has delicate patterns and understated decorative features on pure linen and cotton fabrics. Prices from £31.50 per metre. TAKE ON TEXTURE Texture is the secret ingredient at the heart of the natural home, and different textures add depth, interest and richness to an interior. "ink of scuffed and scarred wood, peeling paint, rusting metal, frayed fabric, bare stone or objects that have been worn and marked by the passage of time," says Blomquist. "I like to play around and layer texture upon texture in my home - the roughness of raw stone walls and unpainted wood alongside the dull sheen of antique glass or murky tarnished mirrors.
"To me, there's nothing more beautiful than an old piece of furniture or other seasoned objects whose texture has been left untouched. I think it's a shame when people buy antiques or vintage pieces and set about eradicating all traces of age." Tip: Visit flea markets and antique fairs to source objects and the right patina for the natural look. Give a new purpose to old furniture and household objects and always include plants to provide an instant connection to the natural world. Go natural: A solid hardwood floor-standing clock in a Swedish style, a Tibro Mora clock from £569, would be a perfect feature. It's just one of the pieces from Scumble Goosie which specialises in Scandinavian style. Marks & Spencer's Ladbrook shelving unit on wheels, £599, (available August) in its Clerkenwell range, would be ideal to display appropriate vintage collections. Neutral tones and interesting textures have long been the signature of e White Company's bedding collections. Its Grafton cotton throw and cushion in a knubbly cotton knit, available in white, grey or plum, complements its pure white Milford cotton linen, from £55 for a single duvet cover. Its antiqued cut-glass ceiling light, £80, suits the style. e East London Furniture Company makes furniture from recycled products, and its three-legged milk stool is made from a recycled wooden pallet, £200 ■

The head chef at the Sea View restaurant based at The Sandbanks Hotel, Stephane Jouan, tells you how to cook a fantastic wild sea bass, Poole Harbour clam, mussel and cockle hot pot. ANYONE FOR PIMM’S?
T
he Pimm's tradition is almost as entrenched in British culture as the cup of tea. All it takes is a prolonged period of good weather, and nothing beats a glass of Pimms on a summer’s day. Pimm's is most popular in Britain, particularly. It is one of the two staple drinks at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta, and the Glyndebourne opera festival. A Pimm's is also the standard cocktail at British polo matches. HISTORY OF PIMMS Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm, a farmer's son from Kent, invented the thirst-quencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cup moniker was born. Pimm's No. 1 Cup is based on gin and can be served both on ice or in cocktails. It has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit. It is often taken with "English-style" lemonade, as well as various chopped fresh ingredients, particularly apples, cucumber, oranges, lemons, strawberry, and borage, though nowadays most substitute mint. Pimm's can also be mixed with champagne (or a sparkling white wine), called a "Pimm's Royal Cup". Pimm's began large-scale production in 1851 to keep up with sales to other bars. e distillery began selling it commercially in 1859 using hawkers on bicycles. In 1865 Pimm sold the business and the right to use his name to Frederick Sawyer. In 1880 the business was acquired by future Lord Mayor of London, Horatio Davies, and a chain of Pimm's Oyster Houses was franchised in 1887. After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups.
Pimm's No. 2 Cup was based on Scotch whisky. Pimm's No. 3 Cup is based on brandy. Phased out, but a version infused with spices and orange peel marketed as Pimm's Winter Cup is now seasonally available. Pimm's No. 4 Cup was based on rum, currently phased out. Pimm's No. 5 Cup was based on rye whisky, also currently phased out. Pimm's No. 6 Cup is based on vodka. It is still produced, but in small quantities. e original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity. PIMMS RECIPES Traditional Pimms No.1 Take one slice of orange, lemon, apple, cucumber per person and one sprig of mint and add to two parts lemonade to one part Pimms. Turbo Pimms No.1 As above but five parts lemonade, two parts Pimms, one part gin. English Passion Pimms No.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice and add 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka, flesh and juice of a passion fruit and a dash of sugar syrup. Shake well and strain into a tumbler full of ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and two short straws. Maximum Voltage Pimms No.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice, 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka and 25ml of Cointreau. Shake well and strain into a highball full of ice. Fill with soda water and garnish with mint. If mixing your own Pimms sounds too much like hard work, head to one of the many pubs and bars in London which serve up Pimms with a healthy dose of fruit, ice and garnished with a sprig of mint ■

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are here! Starting 27th July, and running until 12th August 2012 he Olympic Games is the biggest sporting event on the planet. With 26 sports, 10,500 athletes and millions of spectators, it’s going to be a busy summer. Giant Olympic Rings have been unveiled at Heathrow, the Host Airport of the Games, to help provide a spectacular visual welcome to athletes and visitors during London 2012.
T
Along with plenty of excitement and an incredible atmosphere, the Olympic Games will bring thousands of visitors to London and the UK. This means the transport system will be extremely busy – so if you’re going to a London 2012 sports event or ceremony, it’s important to plan and book your journey well in advance. There is no spectator parking at London 2012 venues, except for a limited number of Blue badge spaces that must be booked in advance – so we recommend you go by public transport, or in many cases, walking to a London 2012 venue is much quicker and easier than you may think. As well as being a healthy, sustainable way to travel, it gives you the chance to see many sights on the way and soak up the atmosphere of being in a Host City. J U LY 2 0 1 2 7

On entry to the Olympic Stadium the audience will see a scene that represents a traditional and idyllic view of the British countryside. The whole of the field of play in the Stadium will be transformed into the rolling British countryside as the London 2012 Ceremonies Team creates one of the largest sets ever built. The set will be complete with meadows, fields and rivers, and featuring families taking picnics, sport being played on the village green and farmers tilling the soil whilst real farmyard animals graze – including 12 horses, 3 cows, 2 goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese, 70 sheep, and 3 sheep dogs.

Chefs from Waitrose worked with Blumenthal and Mr Flanagan in developing the menu, which was delivered by a convoy of eight articulated lorries. The perfectly manicured lawns of Buckingham Palace are normally deserted. Stretching across 40 acres, the neat grassland gives the royal residence its feeling of quietude and serenity. But the Queen’s back yard underwent a transformation as the thousands of concert-goers trooped through the gardens chatting and laughing, ready to party. Heston Blumenthal said the menu was tasted by the Royal Family, who gave their seal of approval at each stage. He said it was an honour to have been chosen. “My name is a lot more exotic than I am. I’m British. I’m proud to be British, and I’m proud of the Royal Family. They have done so much work for the country, and that should be noted.“When you look back over the Queen’s reign, Britain has changed so much in the past 60 years. We have come on culturally in terms of music and films, but one area that had lagged behind was food, but all that has changed in the last five years. We
now have a great culinary tradition.” THE DIAMOND JUBILEE CONCERT The show went on for the star-studded Diamond Jubilee Concert on Monday 4th June. Crowds gathered and waved their Union Jack flag on The Mall during the three hour concert, attended by 12,000 ticket holders, with thousands more spectators lining the length of The Mall. Robbie Williams opened the concert with “Let me Entertain you”, Gary Barlow and the Commonwealth band performed the official Diamond Jubilee song “Sing” on stage during the Diamond Jubilee concert. Sir Elton John performed a number of songs including a soulful reading of Your Song and the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey sang of course, “Diamonds are Forever”. Jessie J, Sir Tom Jones, Stevie Wonder, Sir Cliff Richard all performed and singer Grace Jones hula-hooped her way through Slave To The Rhythm. Madness literally raised the roof by performing on the roof and turning the Queen’s house, Buckingham Palace, into their very own terraced street thanks to some amazing visuals.

Viewers watched on in awe as the band took to the roof to sing some of their classic hits accompanied by the creative light show, singing ‘Our house, in the middle of One’s street’: The Queen opted not to watch the first half of the concert, arriving in the royal box at 9pm. However, she disclosed that she had been watching the show on television just a stone’s throw away in her rooms at the Palace. Musician Sir Paul McCartney drew the Buckingham Palace Concert to a close. The former Beatle proved one of the highlights, watched by 17 million, the BBC’s peak viewing figure, as he closed the show with a medley of hits, with a crowd participation version of Ob-La-Di, Ob-LaDa, after singing his historic song “Let it Be”. Just hours later, it emerged that he would be back in the spotlight “closing the opening” of London 2012 on 27th July. “What a night,” Barlow wrote on Twitter, “It’s going to have to be something special to beat that one. Amazing artists and performances. Incredible audience and atmosphere.” But Danny Boyle, artistic director
of the Olympics opening ceremony, proved that he was not to be outdone. Perhaps mindful of the competition, he was one step ahead, having already snapped up Sir Paul McCartney for his own extravaganza. “I’ve been booked”, the 69-year-old confirmed. Prince Charles then made an emotional speech to ‘Your Majesty… mummy’ ‘for making us proud to be British’ and the sky was lit up by an incredible fireworks display, illuminating the Queen Victoria monument after the Diamond Jubilee concert. Shortly after 10.30pm, The Queen laced a cut glass diamond into a wooden cradle, completing the ceremony that lit the National Beacon, the centrepiece of more than 4,000 stretching across the United Kingdom and the world. The pageant master Bruno Peek, thanked her on behalf of “the nation, the Commonwealth, her realms and territories”. “God Bless you ma’am”, he added. After lighting the national beacon the Queen took time to meet the stars of the show backstage, greeting the band Madness, who had performed on the roof of Buckingham Palace, she was asked by lead singer Suggs:
“I was wondering if I could have your Cup Final tickets?” The comment, which was taken in good spirit, was in tribute to the late comedian Tommy Cooper, who cheekily asked the same question when he met the Queen following a Royal Variety Performance. THE DIAMOND JUBILEE ROYAL PROCESSION On Tuesday 5th June, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations continued with a Service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral. . The royal entourage arrived to cheers and flag waving, while chants of God Save The Queen broke out spontaneously when trumpets announced her arrival. The service was led by the Archbishop of Canterbury who praised the Queen for dedicating herself to the service of her nation and the Commonwealth. And then, after a Mansion House reception, it was time for the Carriage procession back to Buckingham Palace. There, the Queen, her eldest son and daughter-in-law, her two grandsons and granddaughter-in-law watched from the balcony as the Red Arrows
flew past streaming red, white and blue smoke trails from their Hawk jets. It was a fitting end to a truly momentous occasion. The Queen has said she has been “deeply touched” by the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and has thanked everyone involved for what she called a “humbling experience”. The comments, in a special video message, came at the end of four days of festivities which drew hundreds of thousands of wellwishers to Buckingham Palace. All over the weekend young and old, families and friends, displayed their bunting and union flags, tucked into cucumber sandwiches, pork pies and endless cake at street parties across the country celebrating the Queen’s reign. The world has been reminded that, whatever the weather, nobody does pageantry quite like Britain, and put on such a spectacular show. The celebrations will continue as we look forward to the London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics next month, and again be proud to be British. LONG MAY IT CONTINUE.
