Following the storming success last summer of As You Like It, Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts is delighted to announce that it is once again hosting a unique outdoor theatre performance by the world famous Shakespeare’s Globe in the walled garden of Upton Country Park in Poole from 17th – 18th June. Using a small troupe of actors, the company will be presenting a stripped down version of Shakespeare’s classic play Hamlet in this beautiful open air setting, reviving the old Globe principle of outdoor playing. We lived in Bournemouth in the 1930s and the chain ferry was the way we departed from the conurbation to explore the wonders of Dorset’s dramatic coastline, our Jurassic playground. We had no car and so to reach the delectable sands of Shell Bay, we had to catch a bus to Sandbanks and then travel as foot passengers on the ferry across the narrow entrance to Poole Harbour reputed to be one of the largest natural harbours in the world. e ferry was and still is run on a chain even though the old ferry has been superseded by new improved models and it is probably the only sensible way of crossing this narrow opening in view of the strong coastal currents; even this method of transport although tied to the strongest of cables is carried somewhat sideways by the tides. We marvelled at the thickness of the metal chain and wanted to take a closer look, but Father warned us to stand very clear of it, because the cable had considerable movement and was capable of maiming one for life.” – we bring you a wonderful article from a local resident who talks about the fascinating history of Sandbanks and Shell Bay. Enjoy your issue and see you again in July.

Stewart Lee INTERVIEW BY IAN HARRIS
H
aving been described by e Guardian as “e funniest thing on television", Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts welcomes a new full length touring show from the acclaimed star of BBC2’s Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, as he presents his Carpet Remnant World show on June 15th. What can a sexless middle aged married man, whose life now consists mainly of watching Scooby Doo cartoons with a four year old boy, possibly find to write comedy about? Formerly stand-up’s youthful iconoclast, Stewart Lee now gawps blankly at News 24 as Britain burns down around him, and blinks weirdly at the vast wayside retail outlets during endless journeys to and from increasingly indistinct provincial theatres. Once he lived on the pleasure planet. Now he is trapped in Carpet Remnant World. And so are you. is comedian has just played a sold-out twelve week London season to over 30,00 people at Leicester Square eatre, during which he was awarded two 2011 Comedy Awards for his BAFTA nominated BBC2 series: Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. Stewart Lee began stand-up at the age of 20 in 1988, winning the Hackney Empire new act of the year award in 1990. In the 90's he contributed to various BBC Radio comedy shows, including Fist of Fun and On e Hour, with Steve Coogan and Chris Morris, performed as a stand-up almost nightly on the London circuit, and

co-created four series for BBC2 with Richard Herring. Stewart directed the Mighty Boosh's breakthrough Edinburgh show, Arctic Boosh (1999), Simon Munnery's Golden Rose Of Montreux nominated BBC2 show, Attention Scum, (2000), and a revival of Eric Bogosian's Talk Radio (Underbelly 2007). In 2001 he was invited to help write the libretto of, and direct, the composer Richard omas' developing work, Jerry Springer e Opera, at Battersea Arts Centre. e show won four Olivier awards after its National eatre run, though it was prevented from enjoying any commercial future by the pressure group, Christian Voice. Stewart's subsequent three stand-up shows, 2004's Stand-Up Comedian, 2005’s 90's Comedian and 2007's 41st Best Stand-Up Ever, gradually built his live audience and contributed to BBC2's decision to commission his 2009 series, Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle . is was followed by a new stand-up show, If Your Prefer A Milder Comedian Please Ask For One (2009), and completed a new series of Comedy Vehicle in 2011. Stewart is also the author of a novel, e Perfect Fool (4th Estate 2000), the stand-up treatise How I Escaped My Certain Fate (Faber and Faber 2010), and the theatre pieces Pea Green Boat (Traverse/BAC 2002), What Would Judas Do? (Bush/BAC 2007), Johnson and Boswell, Late But Live (Traverse 2007), and Interiors (Manchester International Festival 2007, with Johnny Vegas). Stewart is a patron of the arts radio station Resonance 104.4

lOCAl events FM, and has written on music for e Sunday Times, e Wire, Bucketful Of Brains, and Mojo. THE INTERVIEW Your new touring stand up show is called Carpet Remnant World. Why? Well, the idea of the show is that as a 43 year old comedian and dad of two all I ever do is drive around motorways doing gigs, going past all those massive warehouse type shops, or look after children, so I haven’t had time to write anything apart from jokes about things I’ve seen out of the window of the car. Of course, this is just a dramatic device and in the end it all ties together beautifully and turns out to have been a devastating critique of society. ere’s also a load of old carpets in it which are quite expensive to transport around so that explains the high ticket price. So being a father has changed your stand-up? Yes. But for the better. Looking tired and dead suits my act. Also, because I’m too tired to learn anything verbatim the shows are more discursive and naturalistic now, which is good. Also, I used to be very cynical, but when you have kids you can’t take any pleasure in the abject failure of the world. You have to hope, for their sake, that things get better, which is an interesting place to do stand-up from. In your TV series you said you hadn’t got any jokes. Is that true? Yes, but people do laugh. I do stories and odd ideas really, not jokes as such. If I do a joke it sort of breaks the spell of the show and sticks out like a sore thumb. What difference has being on television made to your stand-up? I don’t know. More people are coming. But I don’t know if they’re coming to see me, or just someone they’ve heard is on the TV. It doesn’t seem to make the shows go any better or worse. ere’s still people in that don’t get it. ere’s just more people generally in the room. You must have been pleased to win two British Comedy Awards last year? I’d rather not talk about it to be honest. I found it very confusing. I don’t know who chooses them or where they came from. It was a big surprise. I was happy for about ten seconds and then I just started worrying about whether people would come to see me expecting ‘award winning comedy’ and then just hate what I do. I couldn’t go to the ceremony as I was working. When I got home I put the TV coverage of the aftershow party on. I saw a load of skittles with the faces of comedians on. ey had all fallen down apart from one with my face on. And then a woman in a red dress ran up and kicked it over, very violently. It was all quite strange really. You caused a lot of controversy when you wrote Jerry Springer e Musical. You mean Jerry Springer e Opera? Jerry Springer e Musical is two rubbish things together so it isn’t funny. Jerry Springer e Opera is funny because it’s two different things. And I didn’t write it. I co-wrote the words with Richard omas. It was his idea and he wrote all the music. I’m fed up of talking about it to be honest. A far right pressure group called Christian Voice made up a load of lies about its content and stirred up 65 000 people who hadn’t seen it into wanting it banned for being blasphemous, so it basically closed and we never saw any money really for five years’ work. e guy in charge of Christian Voice, Stephen Green, even the Daily Mail won’t talk to him these days. I was very proud of the piece but the stress surrounding it means I don’t really like thinking about it. What’s the worst heckle you’ve ever had? I can’t remember. People tend not to heckle me. I don’t really invite it. If people shout stuff out it’s usually funny or helpful. at said I did a show at the Lowry in Salford and a drunk Turkish man came in and just kept going on at me for so long it meant there was no way I could really do the show as written, which was a shame. e venue tried to make out it was my fault and that I should reimburse
people who wanted refunds out of my own pocket, so now if there are persistently disruptive hecklers, like there were last time I was in Cambridge, I force them out of the theatre myself and barricade the door with chairs. In the early 90s you were something of a comedy sex symbol, but now you are grey haired and very overweight. Does this make you feel sick? I find that question quite offensive to be honest, but I will answer it anyway. It works better for my comedy to be old and decrepit, but I do miss being fit and thin. I have to suffer for my art I suppose, and so do my audiences. Frankie Boyle has described you as ‘irrelevant and flabby’. What do you think of that? Has he? I didn’t know that. I can see what he means. If you want punchy well-written one-liners like he does you’re not going to get them from me, so I suppose what I do is irrelevant to what he feels comedy is. I wouldn’t imagine there’s much cross over of audience. And I am flabby. So he’s right on both counts. I met him once or twice. He was actually very nice. He lived near me for a bit and one of the old ladies at the church my wife goes to said “e Scottish comedian from off the telly” was always going round to check she was alright, because she was a bit disabled, and help with stuff in her house. But then money started going missing. She couldn’t confront him about it, obviously. He moved away soon after. Back to Scotland I think. Who are your favorite comedians? Well, everything we think of as break-throughs in stand-up has already been done better and first by Lenny Bruce. I think the best living comics are Daniel Kitson and Jerry Sadowitz and Kevin MacAleer, who is Irish. I really like Paul Sinha, who is a gay Hindu, and Simon Munnery. Boothby Graffoe is very good, a musical comedian. Greg Fleet, who is an Australian who doesn’t come here really. I don’t really like any comedians under 40. I don’t think you can really be any good at stand-up until you are 40. I don’t like any American comedians either, except some of the dead ones. Comedians seem much funnier when they’re dead, I think. I liked Dave Allen when I was a kid. My wife, Bridget Christie, is also on of my favorite comics. I thought she was so funny I married her. People say, ‘that must be funny, being married to a comedian.’ But the laughs soon wear off. en it becomes like any normal marriage. Awful. What can people expect from you in the future? Well the audience numbers I’m getting now are big enough to do stadium gigs like all the famous comics, so I’m wondering if there’s a way of making that idea interesting or subversive. I’ve signed up for martial arts and contemporary dance classes for when this tour is over, and I’ve been talking to some people at e Circus Space in East London about what is entailed in being shot out of a cannon. I want to study kung fu with the Shaolin Monks. I’ve also been doing Neuro Linguistic Programing studies, to try and control the minds of audiences to laugh at what I want them to, and mass hypnosis ideas, thinking about how Hitler and Stalin manipulated crowd responses. I’ve been trying to see how far I can spit ping pong balls, and trying to contact that guy who used to dance with ferrets down his tights on TV at night in the 80s. It’s all good stuff. Also, in the 19th c the Hippodrome eatre in London had a show with elephants in a water tank. I don’t think you’re allowed to do that sort of thing to animals now but I saw a show where someone swam in a tank with a python in Paris and these are all the sorts of things I’m thinking about for the next big tour, which won’t be until about 2016, so I’ve got lots of time to learn all these skills and get fit. And get the snake? Well, I don’t know if it will be a snake. It might be just a big worm. In Australia there are worms that can grow up to 9 feet long. e Gippsland earthworm. Maybe I’ll use one of them ■

MEMORIES OF SANDBANKS
Chain Ferry and Shell Bay
“W
e lived in Bournemouth in the 1930s and the chain ferry was the way we departed from the conurbation to explore the wonders of Dorset’s dramatic coastline, our Jurassic playground. We marvelled at the thickness of the metal chain and wanted to take a closer look, but Father warned us to stand very clear of it, because the cable had considerable movement and was capable of maiming one for life.
So the excitement of the day out began before we reached our destination and once aboard the ferry, we rushed up to the top deck to see the vast panorama of the harbour and to view our destination: the widest expanses of sand that we had ever seen with only a scattering of people; hoorah! Before we reached the other side in a matter of about 15 minutes, Father insisted on our going below to look at the engine turning the cog wheel which grasped the enormous chain. Once landed, we hustled to the sea side of the peninsula where there was a large ramshackle hut which served light refreshments and then ploughed our way through the softest of sand which was never disturbed by the tide; this was hard work and it seemed an eternity before we had reached a mini-headland and were able to walk over firm sand at the water’s edge in Studland Bay. Father jollied us along this arduous part of the walk by telling us that the sands would sing to us if we swished our feet along and sure enough they did, but I was a wee bit disappointed because I was anticipating a jolly tune and discovered that what we heard was only one note

regardless of the way we moved our feet. However, it was good fun finding out how much noise my two sisters and I could create if we shuffled in unison. Rounding the curve we discovered innumerable shells as one might expect from its geographical name, ‘Shell Bay’; we were especially delighted by one particular shell which was about the size of a thumb nail with extensions and which had a convenient small hole one end from which its inmate must have escaped when it outgrew its shell. Both sides of this beautiful find were pearl-like and, when we arrived home, we were able to extend the enjoyment of our wonderful day out by threading together some of these attractive finds to make excellent necklaces. Another shell which we collected was the topshell if some of its pinkish outer covering had been rubbed off revealing the pearl-like nacre; fan shells also attracted us because of their fine symmetrical shapes but razor shells and mussels in abundance we largely ignored. Occasionally, one of us would discover a cowrie shell and then there were huge whoops delight. After lunch we were left to do some exploring of our picnic spot. e wide beach was everywhere backed by great sand dunes covered with marram grass which holds the drifting sand in place largely because of its long straggly roots which delve deep down to find water and nourishment. Father warned us that the blades of this grass were sharp; of course we believed him but I had to try for myself, because, not having any experience of pampas grass, I could not conceive of grass having a knife like edge; a small cut on my hand proved evidence. We were therefore careful not to rush through the grass with our bare legs when we played hide and seek amongst the dunes. Typically childlike we discovered an even more exciting pastime; we collected our wax covered thick cardboard dinner plates and took them to the steepest and least vegetated dune and sitting on them cascaded down to the beach below in a flurry of sand. Needless to say these improvised toboggans did not last long and so on future trips to Shell Bay we tried to remember to take an old tin tray. A suitable time having elapsed since eating, we went for our swim; the warm water was soft and caressing to my ankles and the

waves were mere ripples because this was a beach facing east and much protected by the curve of the bay out to the promontory of Old Harry rocks. I waded out and out and yet out again and still the water did not reach much above my knees so when I tried to swim my tummy got in the way! But it was great to splash about. Naturally we would have liked to explore the inviting land beyond the dunes which seemed to be full of small paths, but Father had warned us that it was the land of snakes and in particular ‘vipers’. Such a word struck terror into our hearts so we never explored beyond the dunes. On occasions though our parents would guide us through the colourful heather and gorse to view a quite expansive lake which was called the Little Sea and which was framed by just a few willows and pine trees. e fun was nearly over as the homeward trek began; we always seemed to be somewhat late to catch the ferry back so we had to follow the quickest route which was a stretch of tarmac nearly two and a half miles long, which ran in a dead straight line except for one minor bend and we children were not allowed to lag behind. Luckily cars were few and far between and there was supposedly an infrequent bus service but we never saw one until we arrived at the ferry. e heather sprinkled with clumps of gorse extended for miles either side and although most attractive in bloom did little to raise our spirits. Nearly always we just caught the ferry; otherwise we were faced with a long wait especially after six o’clock when it ran only once an hour.” e chain ferry is the shortest route connecting Bournemouth and Poole with Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck and carries vehicles and foot passengers every day, weather permitting. e idea of operating a car ferry service here was largely the brainchild of Frank Aman from Totland Bay on the Isle of Wight. With his two sons, Gerard, an engineer, and Arthur, a stockbroker, he was instrumental in starting the Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company in 1923 and maintained the family connection with the business until 1961. Stone for the slipways and the road foundations came from quarries on the Isle of Purbeck, mostly from the cliff-face quarry at Seacombe, which is between Dancing Ledge and St. Aldhelm’s Head.

Ferry No. 1 began the service on July 15th 1926. It was steam-driven and originally constructed to carry 15 cars at any one time, later modified to accommodate 18 cars. e service was popular from the start and in the first short summer season 100,000 passengers and 12,000 cars were ferried across the 400-yard harbour mouth. e service continued until the outbreak of World War II when a restricted service was introduced. After the fall of France, the ferry was taken over by the military and closed to the public for the duration. Studland Bay and the surrounding heath became a battle-training area for the troops who were to take part in the D-day landings in France. At the end of the war the ferry was in need of an extensive refit and the road too required substantial repairs to bomb and shell craters, as well as the removal of tank traps and ‘Dragons Teeth’ obstacles so it was not until 1946 that the service was resumed. For a short while a second ferry was used during the extended refits of Ferry No. 1. Ferry No. 2 was also steam-driven. It was a small ferry that had been purchased after it became redundant on the East to West Cowes service on the Isle of Wight. With space for only 8 cars and was really too small for use. During the 35 years that it was in service Ferry No. 3 proved to be very reliable. Diesel-electric powered, it carried a maximum of 28 cars. It was equipped with three Ruston diesel engines and normally operated on two of these; this meant that at least one engine acted as a spare at all times and also repairs could be carried out without making any changes to the scheduled service times. Annually the ferry carried something in the order of 650,000 vehicles of various sorts, up to the

then 10 ton weight limit, and well over 1 million people. Ferry No. 3 helped enormously to popularise the service, which, over the years, attracted a hard-core of regular users and provided a unique experience for visitors to the area, many of whom were prepared to wait in quite long queues in order to travel on the ferry. In 1961 the Raglan Property Company took over the business and in the 1980s the company was sold on to its present owners Fairacres Group Ltd. and many improvements have since been made. Both slipways have been completely rebuilt, mains electricity laid on to Shell Bay, the old wooden buildings at Shell Bay replaced with a modern office, a roundabout and new toll booths constructed at Shell Bay and a new computerised toll system introduced. Some of the latter changes were made to improve the method of toll collection prior to the introduction of the latest ferry, the fourth to operate this service but the first to actually have a name Bramble Bush Bay - after a small bay located close to the Shell Bay side of the crossing. is current diesel-hydraulic propelled ferry came into service in January 1994 and has a nominal capacity of 48 cars but can quite easily accommodate 52 without difficulty, also buses, coaches and large trucks. Despite new and improved roads on the Wareham route round Poole Harbour, this crossing remains at least as popular as ever, if not more so. run by Amika London, offering an eclectic mix of international opera, jazz and swing sounds. e tempo increases throughout the evening as organisers encourage the guests to party the night away. After the prize giving on Saturday evening, ‘Beach Party the Polo’ will kick off, infusing the chic surroundings with a festival atmosphere as live bands will perform, followed by the beats of international House DJ Colin ‘StarRocker’ Pereira. e competition is being sponsored by a range of companies, including Asahi, Sunseeker, Pommery Champagne and Amika London, and even us here at Sandbanks Life; who are set to sponsor the Scottish boys. Captain of Scotland, Jamie le Hardy said of the event: “It’s a very social weekend and it’s a lot of fun – there’s a real buzz! It’s a great spectacle. You’re right next to the action so it’s a great way of showing polo to the public.” Jamie Le Hardy is widely considered to be one of the best British players the game has seen over the last decade and has been decorated with a host of prestigious awards. Born in Dorset, into an Army family, whose parents travelled extensively throughout Jamie’s early years, his first recollection of polo was watching his father play in Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, Jamie became involved in pony club polo where his passion for the sport started to flourish and his talent clearly showed. He began his career fresh out of school; within three years he had won ‘Young Player of the Year’ award and the British Open Gold Cup: “ose two events really launched my career and since then I’ve been one of the highest rated players in England... I’m half Scottish, half English; my Mum’s Scottish. I played for England a lot in my career and now I’ve taken up the Scottish mantel and am captaining the team.” His other accolades include numerous ‘Most Valuable Player’ awards; he was the first England captain to beat Argentina since World War II and he has won the Golden Jubilee Trophy with Prince Harry. As well as being a world-class talent on the pitch, le Hardy is also a professional A Grade Umpire, and an HPA qualified coach; he owns and runs the le Hardy Polo Academy (based in Surrey) which caters for all ages and abilities: “I spend quite a bit of time coaching, developing horses and
putting a bit back into the sport... If you want to get into polo, have a look at our website and speak to me.” www.lehardypolo.com World renowned English polo-player Jack Kidd is also one of the fantastic sportsman playing during the tournament. Among his numerous achievements which include tournament victories around the world, Kidd has achieved two European gold medals in the Federation of International Polo Championships on grass and an Arena Gold Cup win in 2006. In addition to his success as an outdoor player on grass, Kidd is also perhaps one of the best known players on the Snowpolo circuit; claiming victory at numerous tournaments, perhaps most notably Cartier in St Morita. He is also a pivotal promoter in the recent launch of the Berenberg Snowpolo tournament in January. Influenced by his father who show-jumped for Great Britain at the Olympics and played polo for England, Kidd’s love of the game began at the tender age of 14, “By the time I was 17 I was a professional and twenty years later I’m still a pro”, he said. A truly passionate player, Kidd said of the game: “It’s completely addictive; the most amazing sport you could ever play; to gallop on horses and score goals... its a great, great sport!” I spoke to Kidd, who having spent the last five consecutive days on the pitch, was cooling down and getting some well earned respite. For a man who plays polo consistently throughout the year, his praise of the British Beach Polo Championships was illustrative of the fabulous weekend spectators can expect, “It’s one of the best weekends of the English polo season. I look forward to it immensely and I look forward to playing against all the other countries” Spectators can expect some exciting games, watching these world-class talents stretched to their best, as the sand surface does for a fast paced and technically demanding game: “Sand is probably the most difficult surface to play on out of them all; snow or grass. You have to be very skilled with the horse and very good at hitting the ball in the air.” When I asked him what visitors to the championships can expect, Kidd simply said, “Big parties and big polo matches. It should be a stonker!” Visit www.sandpolo.com for more information on how to book ■

INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRAS, ANIMATED ARTISTS AND AN ICONIC BARENBOIM BEETHOVEN 13TH JULY – 8TH SEPTEMBER 2012
T
he 2012 BBC Proms has revealed details of the broad-ranging programme of events planned for its 118th season. Opening at the Royal Albert Hall on 13th July 2012, the festival promises two months of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, this summer promises to be unlike any other, and as such, the Proms is delighted to be part of the London 2012 Festival. roughout the season there is music to reflect these major events, and on the opening night of the Proms, four British conductors take to the Royal Albert Hall stage to ‘pass the baton’: Martyn Brabbins, Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner and Sir Roger Norrington. Daniel Barenboim and his celebrated West-Eastern Divan Orchestra make Proms history by performing all nine Beethoven symphonies - the first time the entire cycle has featured at the Proms in over 60 years - whilst also becoming the Proms’ first ever non-BBC orchestra-in-residence. English National Opera and the Royal Opera House both perform complete operas in the same season for the first time; the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra becomes the first Brazilian orchestra to appear at the festival and in an exciting collaboration with Aardman Animations, the much-loved Wallace & Gromit characters are transported to the Royal Albert Hall stage for the world premiere of Wallace’s new work, a BBC commission! e season celebrates some of the world’s most eminent living composers including Pierre Boulez. British composers celebrating significant birthdays include Oliver Knussen and Simon Bainbridge at 60, and Hugh Wood and Alexander Goehr at 80. ere are also 150th birthday tributes to Debussy and Delius. As ever the Proms remains firmly committed to new music, with 17 BBC commissions - a further five world premieres and 14 other UK and London premieres, including versions of music by Mendelssohn and Gabrieli, previously unheard in the UK. On

top of this are 10 short BBC commissions which make up the Music Walk around South Kensington, part of the centenary celebrations of John Cage. Youth is a major focus of the festival. From 4th – 6th August four youth orchestras from around the UK, as well as the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Wales, perform at the Proms. Other UK and international youth ensembles include the Juilliard Orchestra and the Aldeburgh World Orchestra, created to bring together the best young performers from around the globe. e BBC Proms Youth Choir gives its inaugural performance, part of an on-going four-year project. In addition to the six BBC performing groups who once again provide the backbone to the season, there is a stellar line up of international orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker with Sir Simon Rattle and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Bernard Haitink, who for the first time give two performances each in one season. e Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly also gives two concerts. In the spirit of the Proms enduring mission to make the best classical music available to everyone, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 with many televised on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Four. For the seventh year in a row, Promming tickets remain just £5 and for the first time this season, seats are half-price for under-18s. Roger Wright, Director BBC Proms and Controller BBC Radio 3, says: "From Daniel Barenboim to Wallace & Gromit, we once again look forward to welcoming the world’s greatest artists to a festival where there is something for everyone to enjoy. Promming tickets remain just £5 and there are plenty of ways for people to enjoy the events in person, on radio, television and online. e BBC’s on-going commitment in running the festival allows the Proms to be one of the best value-for-money experiences anywhere." Tickets are now on sale via www.bbc.co.uk/proms or 0844 209 7353 and in person at the Royal Albert Hall ■

BRITAIN'S B RICHEST ARE GETTING RICHER
LAKSHMI MITTAL

ritain's rich are getting richer, and steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal is still the richest of them all, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. e Indian-born billionaire topped the list for the seventh successive year with an estimated fortune of £12.7bn, despite also suffering the biggest fall in wealth of any of the 1,000 men and women named. Mr Mittal and his family were worth 4.8bn less than last year, leaving them only just ahead of Uzbek metals magnate and Arsenal shareholder, Alisher Usmanov, with £12.3bn. Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich came in third with £9.5bn, down £800m on last year. e wealthiest Briton is the Duke of Westminster, in seventh place with an estimated £7.35bn, thanks to his central London property empire. e combined wealth of Britain's 1,000 richest men and women reached a record high of more than £414bn. Rich List compiler Philip Beresford told us: "Obviously it's very difficult in this age of austerity when the government puts out the mantra 'we're all in this together' and the rich seem to be getting richer and richer."However, I wouldn't criticize the rich because a lot of those on this rich list are based here, they're investing in companies here, and if they get richer hopefully the rest of us will get a bit more prosperous on the rising tide of wealth." e Hinduja Brothers, Srichand, 76, and Gopichand, 72, returned to prominence this year, rising five places to claim the fourth spot, with an estimated fortune of £8.6bn, up an impressive £2.6bn on last year. 2012 saw a record eight lottery millionaires joining the list, led by Europe's biggest lottery winners Colin and Chris Weir at number 462, with £160m. ey donated £1m to the Scottish National Party, making them the country's top political donors, ahead of Peter Cruddas, Sir Anthony Bamford and Lord Sainsbury. "is year we've got a record 77 billionaires, a lot of them foreign-born billionaires, based in London who like London as the centre of their particular universe," Mr Beresford said. " But the best examples of people who are getting prosperous and rich on the back of their own endeavours are Britons like a guy called Michael Oliver (number 243), who is in his 70s and yet runs the biggest valve-making company in Europe. He's making enormous sums of profits and they're generating more jobs and more tax revenue and it's exactly what we need." London and the southeast still dominate the list with 53% of entries, but there are now 74 Scottish entries (up from 70 last year), and 24 Welsh (the same as last year). e list's compilers admit it is a "broad brush estimate", based on public accounts, market intelligence, and in some cases the individuals themselves. And those behind the list report more than a slight air of one-upmanship amongst our wealthiest citizens. Mr Beresford related the story of one man who phoned his friend, also on the list to say: 'Hello, number 21 here, am I talking to number 36?'" THE TOP 10 1 Lakshmi Mittal and family - £12.7bn 2 Alisher Usmanov - £12.3bn 3 Roman Abramovich - £9.5bn 4 Sri and Gopi Hinduja - £8.6bn 5 Leonard Blavatnik - £7.58bn 6 Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli - £7.4bn 7 e Duke of Westminster - £7.35bn 8 David and Simon Reuben - £7.08bn 9 John Fredriksen and family - £6.6bn 10 Galen and George Weston (Toronto) and family - £5.9b ■

“ The best feeling in the world” AUDI ROARS INTO THE POLO ARENA WITH ITS SPONSORSHIP OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FORMAT, CREATING A MEMORABLE POLO DAY FOR BOTH PLAYER AND SPECTATOR
T
he biggest spectator polo day in the world is held at Guards Polo Club in the heart of the Royal Park at Windsor. From this year, this historic event will be sponsored by Audi, the leading luxury carmaker. is company is no stranger to polo though, as it has been the sponsor of the England polo team for several years. is makes it the perfect partner for the leading showcase event for the England Polo Team – the Coronation Cup on the Audi International Polo Day. Last year, the sport’s governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association, in conjunction with Guards Polo Club, celebrated the centenary of the Coronation Cup, which has been played at this most famous of polo clubs for 40 of those past 100 years. Even today, the Coronation Cup is viewed by English polo players, and indeed some of the most famous international names in the sport, as
34
JUNE2012
the most coveted event to play for during the English polo season. e England team manager Andrew Hine, who has also captained the England team on this day many times too, believes International Day has a flavour that cannot be matched anywhere else in the world. “You can play in the Argentine Open in Palermo, Buenos Aires, which for many is the Mecca of the sport, with the noise and 5,000 people on top of you; but when you play at Guards Polo Club in e Coronation Cup, and you hear the roar of some 25,000 people, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. No event can claim those sorts of numbers, and when you get a great, close match, and the crowd in those stands gets behind you, the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. It is the biggest game in the world. We love that as players. ere’s no greater feeling.” e England team has dominated the Coronation Cup in the past couple of years, defeating both New Zealand and Brazil on the

SPORT Club’s most famous of grounds – e Queen’s Ground. is year the team, led by the talented Luke Tomlinson, will be hoping to retain its clean sheet against a talented team from South Africa. is will be the third time that these two countries have met in this competition and the tally currently stands at 2-0 to the home side. So no pressure for Luke and his team-mates then! But win or lose, Luke, who has worn the skipper’s armband since 2006 knows it will be a match to remember. “It’s always a great occasion to be involved in,” he says. “To play for your country, and to be captain, is a high honour in any sport. It’s always a great feeling to go out there and play in front of a huge home crowd. As players, it means so much to us.” e support of Audi at this International Polo at Guards Polo Club on Sunday 22 July not only guarantees to give the best English players the opportunity to shine on this most famous of days, but is also enabling the governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association and Audi to create a platform of international events at other clubs around the country too. Audi has created an International Test Match Series – with England games at Cowdray Park in Sussex, Beaufort in Gloucestershire and, for the first time at Cheshire Racecourse too. is not only says much about the depth of talent and interest in the sport in the UK today, but also highlight’s Audi’s commitment to the oldest team sport in the world. e Audi International Day naturally becomes a late summer highlight of the British sporting calendar. However, to ensure that it does not clash with that other great sporting occasion in 2012, the London Olympics, the polo will be staged a week earlier than usual – on Sunday 22 July. Despite this date change, it remains framed around those other great sporting and social events - Henley, Wimbledon, Ascot and the Lord’s Test match and continues to offer two outstanding polo games – the Coronation Cup in the afternoon and a morning game – showcasing up-and-coming English talent. Of course this year, in honour of Her Majesty e Queen, the winners of the morning game, Young England v e Commonwealth, will receive a new cup this year – the Diamond Jubilee Trophy. Her Majesty, of course, is a huge supporter of the sport, having watched her husband and eldest son play and now two of her grandsons, HRH e Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry. Although there is a new name associated with this event, some things remain very much the same. Pomp, pageantry and elegance will be very much the order of the day, with plenty of opportunities for visitors to Guards Polo Club to enjoy some of the finest hospitality available at any sporting event. is may be courtesy of Pink Food in the Guards Members’ Marquee, with its delicious lunch and afternoon tea menu or seated within Keith’s Prowse’s Chukkas marquee. Here guests have the perfect environment from which to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing day of polo, including a wonderful Best of British menu in honour of the Diamond Jubilee. Meanwhile Chinawhite will be celebrating its 11th year at the International Polo. With hospitality options for both day and evening – or even a combination of the two, this fantastic, dramatic marquee can offer something for everyone. With leading DJ Calvin Harris headlining the decks in the evening, the marquee will become the polo party of the year – if not the decade. e Audi International Day has all the ingredients to create a polo day to remember. So whether you have an Audi invitation to its elegant lunch in the Clubhouse or planning a more informal affair with friends and family at the Club, there are plenty of opportunities to create your own lasting memories.

oyal Ascot is one of the pinnacle events of the summer social season and the racecourse will be playing its part, in this historic year, in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Royal Meeting will certainly be one of the mustattend events of the year to enjoy all of the pageantry and history of a quintessentially British day out. The quality of the racing at Royal Ascot is simply outstanding, with nearly £4 million in prize money on offer and a total of eighteen ‘Group’ races (racing’s term for the most prestigious races) over the five days. The celebrations will commence at 2pm each day as Her Majesty The Queen arrives in her horse drawn landaus, with superb racing action from 2.30pm onwards, including seven Group One races over the five days. After racing, traditional singing around the Bandstand commences in Grandstand Admission at approximately 6pm.. Silver Ring customers can help celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee too, by joining in with the 1950s style ‘Street Party’ with everything from brass bands to bunting.

TUESDAY 19TH JUNE
The opening day of what is sure to be a spectacular Royal Meeting gets off to a flying start with three Group 1 races (i.e. the very best in the world); the Queen Anne Stakes, the King’s Stand Stakes - the first British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge - and the St James’s Palace Stakes. As the first day of Royal Ascot, the fashion stakes are high but the atmosphere is relaxed which allows racegoers the chance to enjoy a glass of Champagne between races or explore the racecourse at their leisure. The highlight of the second day is the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, arguably the most important race at the Royal Meeting in the modern era with £400,000 prize money on offer. Also on the card are the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes, for older female milers and the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, for the best up and coming two year old fillies (females). Thursday’s highlight is the Group 1 Gold Cup, a battle of stamina and determination over two miles and four furlongs - this undisputed long distance world championship is not for the faint hearted! Style, elegance and the height of the summer social calendar all combine on Gold Cup Day, colloquially known as ‘Ladies’ Day. Although the whole week of Royal Ascot is a fashion show like no other, it is Thursday when the designer creations and millinery masterpieces reach new heights. To commemorate 300 years of racing, the Hampton Court Stakes has been renamed the Tercentenary Stakes. FRIDAY 22ND JUNE

The final day of the Royal Meeting always provides a dramatic climax and features one of the world’s most important and international races, the Golden Jubilee Stakes, renamed as the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 2012 to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s important milestone. The race is also the second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge. Saturday is a relatively new addition to the Royal Meeting, having been introduced as recently as 2002. Although the fashions are as elaborate as they are during the week, there is a pronounced, relaxed family feel as many people who are unable to attend until the weekend come to enjoy the experience of the greatest race meeting in the world. Royal Ascot is without doubt the greatest race meeting in the world and a celebration of everything that is uniquely British.

WHAT PRODUCTS SUIT
What hair type I
am going to Jamaica in two weeks' time for a fortnight and am worried about the hot humid weather and what it will do to my thick blonde coloured hair? What products will I need to take to help my hair?
Hair needs moisture in the sun and the more you can treat your hair to this secret recipe the better. e Wella Professionals SUN Protection Spray contains an innovative double-phased formula with a vitamin complex that provides hydration plus high performance UV protection. Helping you keep your summer colour vibrant as well as your hair in great condition. While you are away also use Wella Professionals SUN Hair and Body Shampoo, it will gently help to remove impurities from sunscreen, salt and chlorinated water, while actively restoring moisture. With specials ingredient of Vitamin E, it leaves both your hair and body feeling invigorated. I was wondering if I could have some advice on how to look after my hair when I go on my holidays to a Spa? If you are planning to visit a Spa, we would recommend the choice of products from either the Wella System Professional or Kérastase ranges. Both salon-only brands offer shampoos and conditioners that take care of your hair as well as removing any chlorine if you’re going to be using spa pools or swimming. Chlorine reacts with the chemicals used to colour hair, causing dryness and discoloration, so removing it is important. If you’re wondering which products might be best for you, just ask your Scissors stylist who will be happy to recommend the correct ones for your hair and scalp type. I have naturally ginger hair and have coloured it dark brown for a number of years. I am sick of the dark hair now and would really like to be a lighter shade of brown but not sure if this can be done with my natural hair colour? I have light blue eyes and pale skin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Your dream can certainly be achieved but is definitely best achieved by a Wella Professionals Master Colour Expert. At Scissors we pride ourselves on our Wella Professionals Master Colour Expert so call your nearest Scissors salon now to find out how to book a consultation and appointment. change that the colourist and stylist see you in person before you make a decision. Please could you tell me what hair colour would suit me? I have medium brown hair going grey, a cool skin tone and am 47. I want foils and think they should be caramel and honey tones, I want something to blend in with the increasing amount of grey coming through, would this work? e caramel and honey tones sound fabulous and woven foil highlights are a great way to add texture to the hair as well as fantastic-looking colour. At Scissors our colourists love using a sunkissed lights effect where the front area has more highlights and the remaining hair has less and is painted an all-over natural colour.
How can I make sure my hair really shines? Look after yourself -- yes, this means eating well, sleeping well and exercising. Good health will radiate from every hair follicle. Use a regular conditioner with nourishing oils after every shampoo to smooth down the hair cuticles and help each strand reflect light. We would suggest System Professional from Wella Professionals which can be bought directly from your nearest Scissors Salon. Treat your hair gently. When possible, leave it to dry naturally and give hot brushes and straighteners a rest and when you do use them ensure you use products to protect your hair against the heat. t’s that time of year again; those gym memberships that we all took out in January and haven’t used yet are now becoming a necessity if we want to look and feel good on the beach this summer. customers that all of our garments have been carefully chosen to be both fashionable & functional for your favourite fitness activity. Ian, who not only offers expert advice on all types of fitness wear, also highly recommends the FitFlop sandals for when you are away from the gym or tennis courts. “Our chosen range of FitFlop sandals has styles & colours to suit everyone. FitFlop sandals have been proven to help activate certain leg muscles more, reduce stepping pressure, diffuse under-heel hotspots & attenuate shock when you walk.” So why not, go and try on a pair of Fitflop sandals and then take a nice leisurely walk through Westbourne because just around the corner from Workout of Westbourne is Beach and Body, the perfect shop for dressing your newly toned, beach ready, summer-body. As you'd expect from quality swimwear, the fabrics are light but strong, and with reasonable care will last for years.” Beach and Body stock swimsuits, swimdresses, bikinis and tankinis, beach dresses, sarongs and kaftans as well as sunhats and beach shoes - ensuring that you have everything you need for beach time, here or abroad. HERE COMES
TheSun
PREPARE FOR THE SUNSHINE SEASON AHEAD. LISA HAYNES UNVEILS SPF ADVICE AND PRODUCTS FOR A SAFER SUMMER.
Hello heatwave! Winter jackets have finally been thrown to the back of the wardrobe and replaced by a thick layer of sun cream. But for some, the sun appearing in a blaze of glory didn't trigger an urge to rush out and stock up on SPF... More than a third of Brits don't wear any form of sun protection on home soil, according to a recent St Tropez survey. It seems some us are aren't seeing the light when it comes to basic sun safety. Worryingly, a fifth of the population believe that you need to burn your skin to get a tan. "Sunlight makes us feel good," says sk:n's medical director Dr Askari Townshend. "But UV radiation is damaging to our skin. Gen up so you can have fun in the sun without paying the price with your complexion." SOAK UP THE RAYS SAFELY WITH OUR EXPERT GUIDE TO SUN FACTS AND SUN FICTION. TRUE: You need to protect with an SPF at home and abroad "Sun safety should not simply be saved for far away shores," says Abi Cleeve of Ultrasun UK. "e risk to skin health from harmful UV rays in the UK is just as significant as from those abroad, so protecting yourself and your family whilst out and about in this country is a must."

FALSE: A golden glow equals healthy skin "Tanning is a response to damage in the skin," warns Mike Brown, Boots suncare expert. "e damage will be less through a sunscreen but the lower the SPF that you use, the less damage protection you get. "If you're still insistent on getting a tan, then the actual SPF you need is that which stops you burning whilst still allowing maximum tanning. is will vary according to your skin type or sun sensitivity." TRUE: Red means danger "A single case of bad sunburn can double your chances of getting skin cancer," says Anna Gucova, nurse specialist at e Mole Clinic. "Aim to apply a minimum SPF20 around 30 minutes before going outside. "Around 85% of melanoma cases are caused by sunburn, so avoid burning at all costs. If your skin starts to feel irritated, get out of the sun and apply SPF immediately." FALSE: You don't need protection in the shade "e shade offers at most SPF5-7," explains Dr Sam Bunting, cosmetic dermatologist and Piz Buin ambassador. "Around 84% of the sun's rays bounce off the ground so get under an umbrella, especially if by the sea. You should reapply sun protection every two hours."

TRUE: You can use SPF protection on your hair "e sun's rays can damage our hair and scalp too so hair conditioning products offering UV protection are the answer," suggests Kerry Capewell of the Naturtint UK Haircolour Helpline. "e intense heat from the sun can open hair cuticles causing the hair to dry, increasing split ends and also colour can fade quite rapidly. "Always apply sun cream to any exposed partings and around the hairline or tops of the ears." FALSE: Sunbeds will prep your skin ready for a holiday "No, no and no again!" says Paul Banwell, consultant plastic & cosmetic surgeon. "e misconception about developing a base tan on a sunbed as a way of extra protection before a sunshine holiday is a dangerous myth that must be dispelled. "Getting some natural sun is fine as long as it is in moderation - we need it for vitamin D and also psychologically it's beneficial." TRUE: You need to protect your face, even on cloudy days "UV protection of SPF30 or higher needs to be worn, even on dull days," says FAB dermatologist Dr Buka. "As sun exposure becomes more intense, you'll also want to make sure your products contain antioxidants to scavenge free radicals caused by sun exposure." FALSE: People with lots of moles should stay out of the sun "No, only a small number of melanomas arise from a pre-existing mole," says Dr Sandeep H Cliff, consultant dermatologist. "Also, it is accepted that moles are more common in fair-skinned people and since they are more prone to skin cancer these people should be careful and be sure to cover up with sun screen when they are exposed to limit the risks." TRUE: A healthy diet can boost levels of sun protection "Plants protect themselves from sun damage with pigments such as lutein and anthocyanadins. When these are present in high quantities in our diet we see a complex effect on skin chemistry," reveals Dr Samantha Christie, nutritionist and ambassador of Colladeen Visage. "A natural SPF is achieved as well as an ability to reverse pre-existing sun damage but an SPF is still always required." FALSE: If you wear an SPF your skin is totally protected "Not necessarily, it's important to remember that SPF relates only to UVB radiation (the type that causes sunburn) but not to UVA which still causes damage to DNA, premature ageing of the skin and cancer," sk:n's medical director Dr Askari Townshend says. "Look for products with a UVA rating from 1-5 stars (5 being the best). is is important as UVA can penetrate through clouds and causes damage all year around."
TRIED & TESTED Claire Macdonald celebrates the Jubilee with a diamond facial. "I'm celebrating the Jubilee weekend by getting married so a fresh glow has never been more important. Little did I know that I'd be treated like a queen with Carita's Diamond of Beauty facial at Titanic Spa. Despite being face-focused, the luxurious hour and 45-minute treatment kicked off with a relaxing foot scrub using Renovateur, an earthy exfoliating scrub made from sunflower seeds. A refreshing cleanse was combined with a firm but gentle massage around my face, neck and decolletage. A progressive serum was then massaged into my skin to prepare for the anti-ageing element of the facial. e Pro-Lift machine delivers electrical currents to the skin stimulating facial muscles so they 'lift' - a strange sensation when they involuntary start twitching. RACE FOR LIFE 2012

JUNE2012
CANCER RESEARCH UK is urging women and girls from across the UK to gather friends and family and join the biggest fight against cancer by taking part in Race for Life 2012. Everyone can help beat over 200 types of cancer and help more men and women to survive this awful disease that affects more than one in three people in the UK. Whatever age or fitness level, women can walk, jog or run 5k at over 235 Race for Life events across the UK. For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, there is also a 10k route available at 25 venues. Emma Gilbert, head of Race for Life, said: "Every two minutes someone in the UK is told they have cancer. It touches so many lives and the back signs worn by everyone taking part are a moving reminder that women are taking part to celebrate lives that have been saved, but also sadly lives that have been lost. We are asking women to unite, take part in the biggest fight against cancer, and raise money for Cancer Research UK's life-saving work into all types of cancers, because it is 'all of us v cancer' and together we can help more people survive." Women get involved for many different reasons. Some are cancer survivors,
while others want to celebrate or remember the lives of family, friends or loved ones. Others simply want to come together, have a great day and raise money. Family and friends play an important part in Race for Life -many volunteer at events, help with fundraising or simply cheer on their loved ones on the day. Since it began in 1994, an incredible six million participants have taken part in Race for Life raising a massive £457 million to fund Cancer Research UK's vital work. In 2012, Cancer Research UK hopes to raise £55 million. Cancer survival rates have doubled in the past 40 years and Cancer Research UK's work has been at the heart of this progress. But there's still much to be done and the money raised through Race for Life, will help save even more lives. You can join in at the following venues taking place locally to you BOURNEMOUTH 17TH JUNE SHERBOURNE 24TH JUNE POOLE 24TH JUNE Sign up for Race for Life 2012 now at raceforlife.org or call the hotline on 0871 641 1111. Feed your skin! ‘SUPER’ FOODS ARE NOT JUST TO BE EATEN; THEY CAN MAKE YOU BEAUTIFUL TOO! BY LEVANAH REYES-WAINWRIGHT
S
uper foods have long been associated with fighting free radical damage due to their high levels of antioxidants. We’ve been eating them by the bucket load in order to reap their anti-ageing benefits, and now beauty companies have harnessed theses ‘super’ foods to put in our skincare.
COCONUT AND PLUMS Coconut contains a group of nutrients called cytokinins, which many scientists think can play a role in human health – slowing ageing and lowering the risk of cancer. A great source of nourishment for the body and the skin, it wasn’t going to be long before someone decided to add it to skincare and who better than world-renowned dermatologist to the stars Dr Perricone. INTERVIEW WITH
COOLTINTS ife Magazines went to meet Tim Green from Cooltints in Christchurch which is a family business delivering heat and glare reduction solutions to homes and business throughout the southern half of the UK.
L
From an energy efficient point of view, the film will save you money in terms of heating and air conditioning. It enhances the appearance of any building, there are many different shades, colours and grades of tint available and the film is much more cost effective compared to blinds or shutters.
LM: When did you set up your business? TG: April 2006
LM: Who or what type of businesses could it benefit? TG: At home it’s perfect to use for conservatories and atriums. e main businesses that contact us are shop-fronts with valuable window displays. It’s also perfect for offices that have large glazed areas facing the sun or any businesses or properties where privacy is an issue.
LM: How are your family involved in the business? TG: My wife Mandy helps with admin and fielding customer enquiries in the first instance. Our two eldest boys help with the installation. LM: What brought you into this business? TG: I needed to add to my windscreen repair business, so I started doing vehicle glass tinting which then led to flat glass tinting. LM: Some people might not be familiar with Solar Protective Film, what are the benefits? TG: Having Solar Protective Film is a quick and easy way to upgrade your windows and other glazing giving you a reduction in the effects of solar radiation (less heat and glare) which in turn reduces the effects of fading on furnishings and artwork.
LM: Now, for the science bit, How does it work?! TG: It is a polyester film that is applied directly to the glass and so becomes a part of the glazing system. It has either a metallic or ceramic component in it that reflects the solar energy back through the panel. is is the most effective way to reduce heat and glare through glass. LM: What’s the last project that you completed? TG: e Coastal Gallery in Lymington and the offices of PKT MNY in Lymington.
Both premises’ had problems with direct sun on their windows. e gallery had valuable artworks on display which were getting damaged by the heat and UV radiation. We applied a ceramic film which makes a significant reduction in the solar radiation but is also very clear so people could still see in and look at the window displays. PKT MNY has a large window which faces the afternoon sun and fronts onto a public walkway and so their issues were privacy and heat and glare. We used a daylight natural film to provide good privacy from the outside and a significant reduction in heat and glare so the office was more comfortable with good visibility from the inside to the outside. LM: What’s next or new for Cooltints? TG: More projects hopefully, collaboration with architects is something I am looking for, both residential and commercial properties. Also there are new products coming through all the time from PMX Coatings, our supplier. Visit www.conservatorytinting.com for more information or contact Tim or Mandy for a no obligation quote for your glass. Phone 01202 488594 ■

Jordan Acoustics PRESENTS MCINTOSH WORDS BY GEORGINA FARRELL
For over sixty years, pioneers McIntosh have been creating some of the world’s leading and best known sound-systems. Originally founded in 1949 in Silver Springs, Maryland, the brainchild of two America businessmen Frank McIntosh and Gordon Gow, the company began its evolution from the supplier of domestic post-war amplifiers, to become a major staple of the international music scene and one of the world’s most respected producers of the finest quality sound-systems. e brand-leader’s success really began in the 1950s with the rise in commercial broadcasting. e company’s founding fathers realised the demand from home audio enthusiasts for better audio equipment and these domestic customers quickly discovered that High Performance McIntosh amplifiers worked beautifully in their home audio systems. e 1960s was likewise a decade marked by growth and innovation; it saw the advent of their famous front-panel illumination; while the end of the decade saw McIntosh equipment powering the three days of peace, love and music for the hundreds of thousands of people who attended the festival; Woodstock. e following decade proved just as fruitful for the company; 58
JUNE2012
McIntosh grew in both product selection and new product categories. Loudspeakers were introduced along with a family of matching amplifiers, tuners, and preamplifiers. Glass faceplates and the signature blue amplifier power meters solidified the trademark McIntosh look. After the heady heights of the previous two decades, the 1980s brought with it new challenges for the company. ere was increased competition from both domestic and imported products, along with a recession which stalled sales growth. However, McIntosh took on these challenges, and turned them into great opportunities; they responded with new innovative designs that won over a whole new generation of customers. ese included the advent of the first McIntosh CD player; the company became a leading light in CD player design and also swayed many to become CD disk fans. e 1990s brought with it visions of expansion into the car audio market; they introduced their first automotive line in 1994 and by the end of the decade the first McIntosh powered BMW hit the road; later automotive companies including Harley Davidson, Ford Motor Company and Subaru followed in BMWs footsteps. e 100th anniversary Ford GT introduced in 2003, featured a custom

designed McIntosh sound-system. In addition to their established and flourishing sound-system production, today the tentacles of McIntosh’s empire have reached MT10 turntable system and the AP1, which is the first McIntosh application for iPad, iPhone and iPod allowing users to enjoy the traditional McIntosh user interface when they operate their Apple iTunes device. Managing Director of Bournemouth based Jordan Acoustics, a high-end audio retailer, Tim Jordan, said of the brand, “e unique thing about McIntosh is firstly it’s appearance; it’s got a very retro cool look about it, but it’s incredibly modern and cutting edge internally; there’s some serious engineering to it! But secondly and most importantly, it is unique because of the way that it sounds. It inspires a pride of ownership; it has a certain kudos and aura about it that very few brands can get near to.” Jordan Acoustics were awarded UK distribution rights to McIntosh three years ago. Dealing directly with the factory and importing the product into the country, Tim and his colleagues deal personally with the end user. Although they supply a small network of dealers, Jordan Acoustics mainly supply to high net worth individuals from all walks of life; “Parts of our portfolio cater for famous musicians who want to be able to hear what they have produced as clearly as possible, while other parts of our portfolio are catering for very high net worth people, who just want the best! ey have nice watches, nice cars, nice houses, nice clothes; so they want a nice hi-fi system!” Tim’s passion for the brand is clear; and the aim of Jordan Acoustics is to expand both awareness and lifestyle use of McIntosh high-end audio systems.
“We guide people very completely. Our advice tailors around finding a very real life sound; for instance if you go to a jazz club and listen to a performance and you come home; we want our systems to replicate that vibe as closely as possible – despite the live performance in itself being a very unique thing. We want people to get pleasure from their recording at home rather than having this massive void between how good the actual performance was and how average their hi-fi system sounds.” Tim’s hopes for the future are bright, “We will maybe look at putting our high-end systems into some of the luxury yachts; there are lots of avenues to look at when we’re dealing with the luxurious product that we are.” Jordan Acoustics expanded down to their current and second location in Hurn only twelve months ago (their other store is based in Fife, Scotland). Located in the lovely setting of Parley Manor, their showroom is open to the public Tuesday –Friday, 9.30am-5.30pm and Saturday 9.30am-3pm. ey also have a stunning purpose built demonstration room for people to experience the product before purchasing. oastal style is guaranteed to help any lingering winter blues sail away, and it couldn't be easier to create. Fresh white paint, blue and white stripes and boat and seashore accessories will soon have you in holiday-happy mode, no matter what your location. Gabrielle Fagan sources seaside homeware. Coastal style is on the horizon again - a sure sign that summer's really on its way. e look returns with the predictability of the tide but it's always welcome because it's just the thing to blow away the cobwebs and give rooms a bright and breezy outlook. Even better, you can splash out and evoke a beside-the-seaside retreat or simply take a modest paddle cost-wise and go beachcombing on the high street for a few well-chosen pieces. "e maritime trend always finds favour because it conjures an atmosphere of relaxed informality which is ideal for summer homes," says Paul Clarkson, head of home buying at Sainsbury's. "You can recall memories of the beach with this breezy, seaside-inspired trend whether it's striped textiles, wall art or even crockery in nautical shades of blue, white and red for a relaxed beach hut feel."

SO COME ON BOARD FOR CHIC COASTAL STYLE... SALUTE THE STYLE A blue-and-white colour scheme is the classic interpretation of coastal - and it's an easy-on-the-eye, crisp, clean look. If you want to guarantee blue skies, no matter what the weather, you could paint a feature wall in a deep blue. Dulux's Sea Blue silk emulsion, £19.59 for 2.5 litres from Homebase, couldn't fail to lift your spirits on grey days. If you want to sail further away from home, but your budget will only stretch to a coastal day trip, you could evoke the beauty of foreign surfing shores with a breaking wave mural. Lowers 00217, from £122 from specialists JW Walls, would delight surfer dudes. Seaside chic: One of my favourite papers is the colourful Boat Stamps self-adhesive wallpaper, which looks like a treasured collection lifted from a philatelist's album. It starts from £25 for half a square metre from Purlfrost. COASTAL RETREAT Plump, squashy sofas covered with loose cotton or linen throws in neutral shades or sun-bleached blue and white stripes, white painted floorboards, and a few maritime accessories will have you smelling the sea no matter what your location. "More timeless than a trend, coastal chic is a popular and widespread theme that's a perennial favourite," says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at window specialists Hillarys.

HOUSE GARDEN "is year's look combines cool blue tones with calming taupes, and those who feel a little more adventurous could add accents of coral, turquoise and green. "Roman and roller blinds in muted or stripy fabrics, or pale wooden venetian blinds, are a great way to help create a casual seaside atmosphere and are far more suitable than heavy drapes that would block light and retain heat." Fusion Ocean Blue striped rollers, from £56, measured, made and fitted, (61cmx76cm) from Hillarys, call for details. Seaside chic: Create a special coastal corner in a room for daydreaming and summer chilling. Display holiday photos or a collection of seashore finds on a cupboard or open shelves, and add an easy chair covered in a striped fabric. 3 A large white-painted rowing boat-shaped shelving unit, £79.95, from online interiors company Homehomehome perfectly suits a sail-away style. A neat white wooden show cabinet, £45, from John Lewis could be ideal for showing off small beachcomber finds. Count the hours down to a holiday with a Tu whitewash beach clock, £12, from Sainsbury's online and in store. SEASIDE SAVERS ere's no need to push the boat out to get this look, as there's a wealth of irresistible seaside accessories around. "Create an eclectic finish with a selection of interesting vases and bowls filled with a combination of fresh flowers, shells, or pebbles," says Carole Brown, marketing director at Dunelm Mill. "Natural textures work well with crisp white and blue, so feature woven baskets, driftwood lamps and wooden furniture." It's all too easy to go overboard on cushions, which are now almost being regarded as 'room art' by designers, and there's a raft load with a seaside theme. Dunelm Mill's Beach Huts cushion, £19.99, is a winner with its photo image of brightly-painted shelters and blue sky backdrop. Alternatively, would-be seafarers might prefer those decorated with anchors, such as Tesco coastal cushion, £6, only available in stores. Or plump for Sainsbury's Tu Anchor cushion, £10 (available in selected stores), or Matalan's Harbour Yacht cushion, emblazoned with a lifebelt, £8. et those jobs done with a little help from DIY guru Julia Gray. is month: how to harness sun's power by installing solar panels. You may think that solar panels are a big expense and so not for you, but if you're planning to stay in your home for a long time, installing them can make sense financially, as well as being beneficial to the environment. ere are two types of solar panel - ones that generate electricity (solar photovoltaics or PV), which are most popular, and ones that heat your home's water (solar thermal). With both, you'll cut your utility bills and CO2 emissions, but the benefits don't end there. Solar PV panels can also earn you money, thanks to the Government's Feed-In Tariffs scheme, which pays you for the electricity you generate and use and also for any surplus you supply to the National Grid. is could give you savings and income of around £670 a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust. Its website (www.energysavingtrust.org.uk) features a Solar Energy Calculator, where you can work out how you could benefit from the scheme. An average 3kWp (kilowatts peak) PV system, which will produce enough electricity for around 75% of a typical household's needs, costs in the region of £10,000. Solar thermal panels cost much less, at around £3,000 to £5,000 for a typical system. ey'll provide around 33% of the hot water you need at home (depending on the size of your household), but won't save you much money - between £55 and £80 a year, according to an Energy Saving Trust field trial. You may be able to get a grant to help with the cost of the installation, or other financial assistance - check the Energy Saving Trust website for the latest schemes. As well as the thermal panels, you'll need a boiler or immersion heater to give you additional hot water and sometimes to make the water heated by the panels hotter, especially in winter. You may also have to change your boiler and hot-water cylinder to a compatible one. If putting the panels on a pitched roof isn't an option, you may be able to mount them on a frame on the ground, a wall or a flat roof instead. As with all solar panels, how well they'll work will depend on how much sun they get - the sunnier the position, the better, although they can still work on cloudy days. Solar panels are heavy, so ground or

HERE COMES THE SUN wall-mounted ones could be a good option if the roof can't take the weight. If your home's leasehold, you may need permission from the freeholder to install solar panels. Restrictions may also apply if you live on 'designated land', such as a conservation area, and if the building's listed, so ask your local council about what you can and can't do. Where planning restrictions apply, solar roof tiles or slates may be acceptable to the planners. ese are more expensive than panels, though. Standard solar panels are readily available - try the B&Q website (www.diy.com), where panels start at £2,198 for two. Alternatively, go to http://local.which.co.uk or www.microgenerationcertification.org to find solar panel installers. As ever, get as many quotations as possible to find the best deal. PRODUCT OF THE MONTH ink all kitchen roll is the same? irst Pockets Multi Cloth is a really thick, absorbent kitchen roll that performs well in day-to-day, DIY and deep, spring cleaning. It's different to most products because it has a cloth-like feel, which is created in a process called Airlaid. Latex is used as a binder and it isn't soluble in water, so the fibres are strong even when wet. e result is paper towels that not only
feel similar to cloth, but can also be rinsed and reused (without falling apart), so they're more versatile than most. irst Pockets Multi Cloth is available from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Asda, priced £2.39. HOW-TO TIP If you're fixing a skirting board to the wall, countersink the screws so you can fill over them with wood filler for a neat finish. You'll also need to use flexible filler in the gap between the skirting board and the wall - wipe off the excess thoroughly as you apply it, and you may not need to paint over it. It's easier to paint the skirting board before it's fitted, especially if it's going to be a different colour to the wall, but you will need to paint over the wood filler ■

ver the last twenty years every aspect of the home has been the subject of makeovers and upgrading. We have seen kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, soft furnishings, gardens, sundecks, swimming pools: the list is endless. Or almost endless. e only area in a home that has not had the usual loving care is the garage: until now that is. After years of abuse, the lowly garage is finally getting a second chance thanks to GarageTek who are the leading garage storage and organisation company in America and have been operating in the UK for five years now. Alastair Broom, the Managing Director in the UK had been researching the options for garages for a number of years because, coming from a property background he could see the enormous potential that has been the garage.

JUNE2012
THE WORLD’S CLEANEST GARAGE BY GARAGETEK “In many cases the garage is over 10% of the space in a house and yet owners have not had a sensible proposition to do anything with it. ey will happily leave their £50,000 Mercedes on the drive in all weather whilst there is probably £1,000 of odds and ends lying all over the garage floor. is really doesn’t make a lot of sense and I was determined to find a solution,” says Alastair Broom. “Added to that in a house with a value today of, say £750,000, 10% equates to the garage having a potential value of £75,000. Does it feel like that value to most owners? Why not increase its value and therefore the value of the house as well as making maximum use of the space?” THE BENEFITS OF GARAGETEK GarageTek will design and install a storage solution that gets everything off the floor and onto the walls in specially designed cabinets, baskets,
racks and hooks. e main benefits are that it is: ■
Easy to keep clean and tidy
■
Gives a bright glossy look thereby increasing light
■
Easy to move and re-organise everything whenever you want
■
Weather-proof and bug-proof
■
Professionally designed and installed
■
Covered by a 10 year warranty
With options for the walls, floor, ceiling and over 80 different units there is clearly something for everyone. And there is no need to have the whole garage fitted: the system is so flexible that it is possible to have just one wall fitted, maybe with a new floor and the rest can be done at a later stage if that fits the budget better.
THE VALUE OF VERSATILITY e foundation of the GarageTek system is the patented TekPanel, a strong, attractive wall panel on which other system elements are attached. TekPanel is bright, strong and covers the walls of the garage and then a modular system of high performance cabinets, shelves, baskets and activity racks are added to the slotted walls with clip-on brackets. e GarageTek system can easily accommodate storage of various items. For example: ■ Sports enthusiasts can select activity racks specifically designed for stowing bicycles, fishing rods and tackle, sailing equipment, canoes, golf clubs and shoes, ski equipment or tennis equipment ■ Kids will love to have their own private lockers and racks for sports gear ■ Gardeners can organise their tools handily

■ Brackets, baskets and shelving handle household supplies, while lockable cabinets can keep paints and chemicals safe from young hands. ■ Woodworkers or hobby enthusiasts can create a well-organised workshop area with benchs, cabinets, part bins, tip-out bins, tool holders and hooks
If storage needs or hobbies change, the beauty of GarageTek is its adaptability. Any layout changes are easy: the owner simply lifts and
of colours and patterns to choose from. CUSTOM DESIGN AND INSTALLATION When a homeowner is interested in a GarageTek system, the first step is a no strings attached free consultation where a GarageTek designer will create a custom rendering of the proposed garage organisation system using the Company’s own GarageVision software. e garage will be measured and designed to the owner’s needs and requirements and a comprehensive colour layout
GarageTek system which will create or enhance a lot of space in their home.” ENJOY THE GARAGE e final piece in the jigsaw is the enjoyment. It is the most important step. A GarageTek system gives so much more flexibility. Owners can re-configure the accessories anywhere on the walls at any time without the need for tools. If you need more accessories – no problem. GarageTek have them in stock and they can easily be added to the system at any time.

GarageTek also offers a choice of flooring system: an extraordinarily strong, stain resistant and easy to keep clean interlocking tile or a very popular seamless Resin coating that gives the garage a car showroom look. Like the entire GarageTek system, the flooring is custom designed and versatile with a wide range
and price structure is given to homeowners so that they can see exactly how their garage will look. “Whilst the do-it-yourself on a budget is not our core market we have sold a number of our systems and the owners will do the installation themselves” says Broom. “Our market is the homeowner who understands value and wants the convenience and style of a
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY CUSTOMERS GENUINELY ENJOY USING THEIR GARAGE BECAUSE THEY ARE SUDDENLY A PLEASURE TO BE IN!
Alastair Broom’s vision is for the garage to be considered on the same level of thinking as the rest of the home. “ In a few years I expect to see the GarageTek brand as a part of Estate Agents’ details in much the same way as the quality brands for kitchens are today.” One thing is clear: homeowners now have a serious and quality option for upgrading their garage to make it a highly usable space be it for storage, recreation or keeping that car in throughout the year. GO FOR FLAWLESS WALLS G et those jobs done with a little help from DIY guru Julia Gray. is month: how to fill awkward and hard-to-fill gaps in the walls of your homes. Wallpaper, especially textured paper, can hide a multitude of sins. While you may not be able to live with it any more, removing it is a risky business because once you do, the walls (and ceilings) may need replastering. Not generally a job for DIYers (if you fancy having a go, B&Q does a Patch Plastering & Introduction to Skimming class - see www.diy.com/youcandoit), replastering will give you a good finish, although you'll need to fill and sand the walls once the plaster has dried (it usually goes pale pink when it has) to make them as perfect as possible. Employing a plasterer needn't be expensive, but it is quite a messy job and even newly replastered walls can develop hairline cracks within weeks, which you'll need to fill, or cover with lining paper. Lining paper come in various thicknesses, with the thickest designed for

walls in the worst state of repair. It's quite common to hang lining paper horizontally, especially paste-the-wall ones, which are the easiest to use. With these, you simply apply wallpaper paste to the wall with a brush or roller and then hang the paper. You don't have to wait for the paste to soak in to the paper and you don't have to grapple with soggy lengths of paper. Lining paper can be used to make less-than-perfect walls look better if you don't want to have them replastered, but lumps and bumps will be noticeable if light falls across them - lamps are one of the worst offenders. Got a wall that's spongy and moves slightly when you press it? e plaster is blown, meaning it's no longer adhered properly. e blown area will ideally need to be replastered, although you may be able to just use lining paper to keep the plaster in place, as long as you don't put any weight on it, such as tiles or shelves. If you don't mind the fact that your walls have seen better days, great. is look often
PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Plug It Polyfilla (£5.11, Polycell) is brilliant for filling awkward and hard-to-fill holes where conventional filler wouldn't work. You simply cut off how much you need, knead it (wearing protective gloves) until it changes colour, work it into the hole - it stays workable for up to four minutes - and then fill over it with conventional filler, if necessary. It's that simple - and mess free. But it's more than just an awkward-gap filler - it can also be used to plug holes that you need to reuse for refixing curtain poles and shelves, etc. Plug It sets hard, can be screwed into there's no need for Rawlplugs - and can support up to 20kg in weight. It can be used both indoors and out for plaster, brick and concrete. A versatile, compact and really useful addition to your toolbox. HOW-TO TIP To remove polystyrene ceiling tiles, make sure you have a stepladder tall enough to enable you to reach the ceiling without overstretching, as this is dangerous. e ladder should be on a flat, stable surface and your floor covering should be protected from falling debris, unless you're planning to replace it. You'll need a wallpaper-stripping knife to remove the polystyrene tiles, but be careful not to damage the ceiling underneath, especially if the knife's blade is sharp, because plaster can be soft and prone to gouges. Once you've removed the tiles, you're left with the problem of the adhesive they were fixed with - use a hot-air gun to soften it before scraping it off. Try scrubbing off any remaining adhesive with an abrasive sponge dipped in solvent thinner. Be careful when using the hot air gun, as, again, you don't want to damage the ceiling - or yourself. Play safe by wearing protective gloves and goggles, and remember to ventilate the room. It's also a good idea to wear a shower cap to protect your hair from the debris. If you're struggling to remove the adhesive or the ceiling's damaged, you'll need to skim it or get a plasterer to do it ■

S
urrounded by idyllic pasture land in Christchurch is the award winning, five star restaurant and rooms, e Manor. e continued success of e Manor is due not only to its beautiful setting and carefully designed interior but also to its award winning Sunday lunches. Group Executive Chef for Van Hagen Leisure, Andy Jacob, who is based at e Manor is planning something extra special for the Jubilee weekend celebrations. Andy has quite a unique angle with the menu that he’s created as he was lucky enough to work on the QE2 in the 80s. Andy was hand-picked to be one of six students to go and work on the famous cruise ship for a year, he then stayed on board ship for a further five years; “It was a fantastic experience and such a great opportunity, I was only 21 and I was cruising around the world on one of the most famous cruise ships in the world and cooking for royalty.” Andy was working in the kitchens on the ship when Andrew and Sarah Ferguson came on board after their wedding in 1986, and he’s planning to recreate one of the dishes that he cooked for the royal newlyweds at e Manor over the Jubilee weekend. e rest of the menu that will be on offer over the bank holiday Monday and Tuesday will be demonstrating the ‘Best of British’ with dishes including potted shrimp, a picnic platter, the very apt ‘queen of puddings’ and of course classics like fish & chips and strawberries & cream. A new addition to the Van Hagen Leisure Group and new General Manager to e Manor, Stuart Brown, is anticipating a very busy weekend “We’re already nearly fully booked and it will be a case of all hands on deck to
provide our expected levels of high service and quality food.” e Van Hagen Leisure group are going against the grain and expanding rapidly at the moment. Having acquired e Ox in Ashley Cross last year which is due to open soon, they have just gained their latest addition to the group, e Weld Arms in Lulworth. Chris Van Hagen, a director of the company, enthused “Now is the best time for us to expand the business, the British pub industry has been struggling over the last few years but we are lucky enough to have a fantastic team behind us including builders, designers, management, creators of food and drink, and of course, staff providing high standards of hospitality and service which all come together to make each one of our venues a resounding success.” “We are very excited about e Weld Arms as it’s in such a fantastic location on the Lulworth estate. I also have an idea to run bus trips out there from e Manor, I’ve managed to pick up a 1970s, York Pullman City Tour, open top, double decker bus which will be a brilliant experience for people as well as providing transport over there.” With so many innovative ideas to make their standard of pubs a cut above the rest, it’s no wonder that e Van Hagen Leisure group and all of the venues in the group continue to do so well. e only problem with this rapid rate of expansion is recruiting enough quality staff in all positions to cope with the imminent busy summer which is already showing all the signs of being a brilliant one for this local, entrepreneurial company. 01202 477189 15-17 Salisbury Road, Burton, Christchurch, Dorset, BH23 7JG www.themanorchristchurch.co.uk

Evoque RANGE ROVER
SPECIAL EDITION WITH
Victoria Beckham MAKES GLOBAL DEBUT
L
and Rover and Victoria Beckham have unveiled a new bespoke luxurious, hand-finished Range Rover Evoque Special Edition. The exclusively design is the result of a collaboration between Land Rover Design, led by Gerry McGovern with Victoria Beckham, winner of the coveted Designer Brand of the Year award at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. Victoria was appointed Creative Design Executive in July 2010 and has worked with the Land Rover design team over the past 18 months to create her Special Edition. Victoria Beckham said: “I am very excited to be working with Land Rover as I have an enormous amount of respect for the brand. I’ve always driven a Range Rover, for me they are the epitome of quality and luxury. When I first started working with the team I did a lot of research, and created mood boards to show the team my love of timeless and classic design. I looked at yachts, luxury jets and classic cars. It’s the small detail that makes all the difference. I want everyone who gets into this car to feel special and empowered by its quality and craftsmanship. I like that it feels luxurious but also has quite a classic edge to it as well as a contemporary feel.” 3 JUNE2012 75

Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern said: “The design of Evoque has truly captured the hearts of customers worldwide. Working with Victoria the intention was to create a Special Edition that extends its character in a new direction through understated, restrained colour and detail changes. Both Land Rover and Victoria Beckham are British luxury brands with credibility and global appeal, this dual ‘Britishness’ makes the collaboration even more exciting especially when considering the huge audience for bespoke products around the world. Working with Victoria we quickly recognised our similar design tastes and ambition for this car. For example at the first meeting, Victoria herself inspired the use of rose gold. She was wearing dark clothes and no jewellery apart from a rose gold,

man’s watch. I was struck by the juxtaposition of the masculine watch on a very elegant, feminine wrist. We both agreed it was the ideal way to introduce a softer touch to the bold, assertive exterior colour scheme.Throughout the process we were keen to ensure that the vehicle would appeal equally to both men and women, in fact Victoria always maintained that she wanted her husband David to be proud to drive this car. We fully enjoyed working with Victoria and I am confident this special edition will appeal to discerning luxury consumers globally.” Quintessential British luxury is a hallmark of both the Land Rover and Victoria Beckham brands. This Special Edition allows that impression to be further heightened through the use of the finest quality materials and

craftsmanship. Powered by the lightweight, all-aluminium 240PS 2.0-litre petrol engine the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition will be hand-finished by Land Rover’s Engineering to Order division (ETO) in Warwickshire. Essential to the design is the high quality hand-finished matt grey paint, unique 20” gloss black forged alloy wheels and luxurious rose-gold details, limited solely to this Special Edition. Complimenting the ultra-modern, stealth-like exterior is an elegant and luxurious interior. The sport design four-seats are finished in a semi-aniline Vintage Tan leather, with a bold ‘baseball’ stitch detail chosen by Victoria as a tongue-in-cheek reference to her sporting husband David. The same leather is also used to cover the door inserts, arm rests and central storage box lid. Another personal touch are the exclusive and ultra-luxurious floor mats. The designer explained that when she was a young girl, her father owned a Rolls-Royce and she would enjoy taking her shoes off to sink her bare feet into the thick carpeting. Land Rover’s designers replicated this for her by using mohair, usually reserved for luxury clothing, to make the mats. Bespoke luggage completes the holistic design package that is the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham. This four-piece set is based on the designer’s own luggage range, using the same high-quality internal structure and clothed in hand stitched black leather. The set comprises two his and her’s wheeled suitcases and wash bags, all of which are lined in the same microsuede used for the roof lining, and as a finishing touch the zip pulls are finished in the same matt grey as the exterior. A beautiful hand stitched leather wallet, with rose-gold detail containing a guide to the exclusive features of the car is cobranded Range Rover Evoque and signed by Victoria Beckham. Victoria Beckham is a joint venture between Victoria Beckham and Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment Ltd. ABOUT LAND ROVER

At Poole Accident Repair we will even manage your insurance company claim for you. But don’t just take it from us… KNOW YOUR RIGHTS FACT: e Office of Fair Trading and e British Board of Motor Insurers have agreed that Motor Vehicle insurance policy holders have the right to choose where their vehicle is repaired, regardless of the insurance company’s advice. erefore you, as a policy holder are not obliged to use your insurer’s approved repairer and you can insist on having your vehicle repaired by the accident repair centre of your choice.

HOW TO CHOOSE Before you begin your search for a quality repairer, you will need to find out if your car is made of aluminium. If it is, you will need a specialist aluminium bodyshop like Poole Accident Repair. You may also want to think about going to a company approved by your car manufacturer. For example, Poole Accident Repair is a Volkswagen Group Approved Paint and Body Centre and recently appointed Porsche Centre Approved Body Repairer. Finally, make sure that whichever company you choose is going to perform rigorous inspections and quality control checks following your repair – no matter how minor. REMEMBER…YOUR CAR, YOUR CHOICE. HEART AND SOUL OF DORCHESTER
A
n exciting, new development is happening in our historic county town, Dorchester’s Eldridge Pope Brewery site is being transformed into ‘e new heart and soul of Dorchester’. e site has been artistically and sympathetically designed to incorporate apartments, duplexes and penthouses all arranged around garden squares and courtyards. As well as providing …new homes to the town, the development also brings a plethora of shops and restaurants, a boutique hotel and spa, cinema and an arts centre to entertain residents and locals alike which, being so central will give Dorchester a sure boost in visitor numbers to the town. e development also has a definite green agenda which includes Brewery Square's water which is drawn from the Brewery's own aquifer supply used since 1880. is water supplies every tap in the development as well as the new Dorchester Spa. is pioneering project will also be home to the country’s first solar powered train station as they are revamping the existing Dorchester South Station. Responsible for this urban regeneration project is Resolution Property plc and Waterhouse, a pioneering development company based in London and Dorchester. Since 1980 Andrew Wadsworth and Robert Ackland, partners in Waterhouse, have been involved with numerous projects, their first being in London’s Docklands; the restoration and conversion of listed Victorian warehouses and innovative contemporary buildings which were the catalyst for large scale regeneration which followed. e Eldridge Pope Brewery site combines their passion for rejuvenating listed buildings and converting industrial sites. e original Eldridge brewery was founded by Charles and

Sarah Eldridge in 1833, the company built the Green Dragon Brewery in Dorchester in 1837. Soon after John Allen Pope came into the partnership, and production moved to the Mariners Brewery, the latter still visible in High West Street, suppling taverns, inns and station hotels along the south coast. In 1879 two of John Allen Pope’s sons, Alfred and Edwin, opened the Dorchester Brewery in Weymouth Avenue, with its own water supply and access to the adjoining south coast railway line, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. e Victorian and Edwardian brewery buildings were designed in an exuberant style by W.R. Crickmay, for whom omas Hardy worked as an architect until 1872 when he became a full time writer. By the end of the 19th Century the company owned 97 freehold pubs from London to Exeter. e company became the wine supplier to Queen Victoria and was one of the first to be awarded the Royal Warrant. roughout the remainder of the 19th and into the 20th century Eldridge Pope continued to thrive even after a fire in 1922 when much of the Brew house was destroyed. e present Brew house was rebuilt and reopened 2 years later. e company’s two most well-known ales were ‘Royal Oak’ and ‘Hardy’s Ale’, in recognition of Dorset’s most famous writer. When Eldridge Pope sold the site in 2002 the company was still managed by Christopher Pope, one of the great great-grandsons of John Pope.
