THE ‘TREEMENDOUS’ NEW FOREST IN AUTUMN
The UK’s largest annual tree celebration National Tree Week starts on 23 November. It marks the start of the winter tree planting season and reminds people of the beauty and importance of trees.
Over the years, trees have been used for many things in the New Forest. They provide us with shelter, fodder for cattle, food for humans, and charcoal for fire.
As part of the National Park’s campaign to take you Behind The Scenes, meet New Forest National Park Authority Senior Tree Officer Nik Gruber: ‘The New Forest is recognised as one of the most important sites in north-west Europe for ancient and veteran trees. These along with a host of other fauna and flora provide a rare and important habitat.
‘Older mature trees, particularly of oak and beech, are a particular characteristic of the New Forest. They are a feature not only of the ancient woodlands of the Open Forest, but of the villages and other settlements that have developed over time as an integral part of the Forest
landscape.
‘The New Forest never ceases to inspire and is never the same with changes in colour and texture throughout the year. It has a unique character and energy, and connecting with the landscape and the wildlife is good for the soul.’
The traditional planting season for most trees and shrubs is between November and March. If you’re thinking about planting a tree on your property, now’s the time to do it. Why not consider a British native such as oak, beech, holly, birch or yew?
Nik said: ‘Trees are havens for wildlife, and the fascinating world of fungi depends on them too. They also play an important role in combating climate change by capturing harmful carbon emissions from the air around us. Not only that, they’re important to the character of both in rural and urban areas.’
Most common native trees will grow in people’s gardens. It’s a case of choosing the right size and species of tree for the right location, so, for example, take soil types and closeness to buildings into account. If you’re thinking of adding one to your property, just make sure that ground preparation, planting and aftercare is properly planned. If in doubt, please ask a professional. newforestnpa.gov.uk/trees; treecouncil.org.uk

Look out for livestock
With the darker nights, drivers using New Forest roads are reminded that November is the deadliest month for animal accidents.
Commuters are urged to take extra care, as accidents involving animals in the Forest peak between 5pm and 8pm on weekdays in the winter months.
“Enjoy a pop-up bar and food court, live music performances, how-to demonstrations, and plenty of child-friendly activities”
When driving in the National Park the animals have right of way and have no road sense so please expect them to step out. The commoners animals play a vital role in maintaining the rare habitats which makes the landscape so spectacular.
If you do have an accident involving a pony, cow, donkey, pig or sheep, by law you must report it to the police as soon as possible.

THE CLAY RETREAT NEAR LYMINGTON BY ARCHITECTS PAD
Artists in Purbeck: Spirit of Place
Until 16 March 2025
The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, is thrilled to announce the opening of Artists in Purbeck: Spirit of Place, the first exhibition dedicated solely to artists who captured the essence of Purbeck, Dorset, since the beginning of the 20th century.
The Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, has captivated artists for centuries. It’s fascinating variety of landscapes has inspired a wide range of artistic styles and subjects. This groundbreaking exhibition, co-curated by Dr. Gill Clarke MBE (co-author of Shorelines: Artists on the South Coast) and the Russell-Cotes, will showcase a rich collection of artworks drawn from the museum’s permanent holdings, alongside significant loans from private and regional collections, including the Government Art Collection, Southampton City Art Gallery, and Pallant House Gallery. It also brings together works from local collections, including Dorset Museum, Poole Museum, Corfe Castle Museum, Langton Matravers Museum and Swanage Museum.
The exhibition is organised thematically, exploring distinct aspects of Purbeck through the lens of the artists’ work, from quarries and quarrying to the advent of Purbeck as a destination for leisure and tourism. It will also focus on notable landmarks and villages, such as Corfe Castle, Clavell Tower overlooking Kimmeridge
Bay and the Great Globe at Swanage. In addition to the ‘manmade follies’, unique geological wonders like rock formations and dramatic cliffs provided a fascinating subject for artists interested in capturing the history and character of the natural Purbeck landscape. While curating the exhibition, curator Dr Gill Clarke remarked:
‘It’s no wonder artists have been attracted to and captivated by the spectacular coastline, varied landscape and picturesque villages.’
Beyond the visual feast, Purbeck offers a sense of peace and tranquillity, a stark contrast to the bustling city life many artists were accustomed to. This tranquillity fostered both introspective and evocative works that captured essence and the spirit of the place.
Sarah Newman, Manager at the Russell-Cotes, said: ‘We are delighted to present this exhibition, which celebrates the rich artistic legacy of Purbeck. The artists featured in this show have captured the unique beauty and character of this region in a truly inspiring way. We invite visitors to join us on this journey through time and discover the extraordinary works of art that have been inspired by Purbeck.’
Featuring over 70 works, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore the Isle of Purbeck over time, through the eyes of artists who capture its ever evolving beauty. Artists in Purbeck: Spirit of Place opened on Saturday 12 October 2024 at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, and runs until 16 March 2025. russellcotes.com

Rosemead Preparatory School celebrates
500 years of Black Music with a day to remember.
Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, celebrated 500 years of Black Music with a ‘Beyond the Bassline’ themed day on Friday 11 October 2024.
As part of the school’s We Are Rosemead EEDI initiative, which places a focus on fostering Equality, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion within our school community, Rosemead enjoyed a vibrant and uplifting day celebrating Beyond the Bassline: 500 Years of Black Music. This event brought together children, staff, and guest speakers to celebrate the profound impact Black music has had on global culture and history, connecting Rosemead’s curriculum to this rich legacy.
“CeCelia Wickham-Anderson, a legendary vocalist and educator, brought energy and passion to the day through her vocal warm-ups and singing session”
Speaking about the event, head Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘We were thrilled to welcome two dynamic guest speakers, David Kadamukasa and CeCelia Wickham-Anderson. David, our very own cellist, captivated our children with fascinating insights into his journey through music sharing
stories and songs from his past.
‘CeCelia Wickham-Anderson, a legendary vocalist and educator, brought energy and passion to the day through her vocal warm-ups and singing sessions. She led the children in a series of incredible vocal exercises, demonstrating the power of music as a universal language that connects us all. The children were enthralled by her warmth and expertise, and their voices filled the school with beautiful harmonies—a highlight that left everyone buzzing with excitement.’
Graeme added: ‘Celia educated us all, sharing songs from music’s roots in African traditions to its influence on genres such as jazz, reggae, and hip-hop. Her talk offered a powerful reminder of how Black artists and communities have shaped the soundtracks of our lives.
‘In addition to our live guests, we were delighted to receive messages of support from two influential figures in the music industry: Mark De Lisser, a celebrated vocal coach and choir director, whom some of you may remember as our guest speaker at our end of year celebrations in 2022, and the Grammy award-winning artist Ella Mai. Both shared words of encouragement with our children, reinforcing the importance of believing in their talents and staying connected to their cultural heritage through the arts.’
The celebration was more than just a musical experience; it was a key moment for Rosemead’s ongoing efforts to celebrate the diversity within the school community and to inspire children with stories and perspectives from different cultures. The event also reflected the heart of the We Are Rosemead initiative, which is dedicated to creating a school environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued for their unique contributions.
“The celebration was more than just a musical experience; it was a key moment for Rosemead’s ongoing efforts to celebrate the diversity within the school community”
Beyond the Bassline helps us nurture a deeper understanding of the world around us, teaching our children not just about the past, but about the importance of inclusion, respect, and unity in shaping the future.
Last month, Rosemead was delighted to find out it has been nominated for two awards at the upcoming ISA Awards in November. The school has been shortlisted for Innovation in
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and for Junior School of the Year. Rosemead is also celebrating after a visit from the Good Schools Guide earlier this year. ‘We think Rosemead is definitely ‘one to watch’ as it carves out a specific niche in this corner of London,’ the review explained.
In June, the school was also delighted to receive an award at the prestigious Education Choices Award, winning for best Improvements in EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging).

The best way to encapsulate what makes a Junior School pupil stand out is our College motto, Albam Exorna. Translating as ‘Adorn the White,’ the idea behind it is that on the first day of school, in Nursery for our youngest pupils, our pupils are gifted a metaphorical blank St Dunstan’s shield. It doesn’t stay blank for long! Soon it is filled with colour. Our pupils select significant moments that matter to them as they embark upon an educational journey through St Dunstan’s, and they love seeing how their shield evolves over time. Their shield really could be filled with anything at all – a fear they faced on a residential visit, a performance they participated in on a professional stage, a challenge they may have faced in a lesson, one of the ninety co-curricular clubs we offer each week or something
as simple as a joke they had on the playground with the friends. Their shield never looks like anyone else’s, and that is what we see as being unique about our school. Our pupils cannot be identified by their similarities, but by what makes them different to everyone else – they are brave, bold and confident being who they are.
How does the school help children settle into reception and nursery in those early days?
Ahead of their first day in school, we hold a number of transition events in order to prepare our new pupils for the school days ahead. This includes inviting the new members of our St Dunstan’s family in to meet Santa in our school library, watch the Pre-Prep Nativity, have a taster session in the Woodland Classroom and experience a whole morning with their new classmates and teacher. These
activities are staggered from the point of acceptance in early December to the summer so we very much aim for a ‘stepping stone’ approach to prepare our new pupils for what comes next. We are extremely lucky to have a dedicated PTA (Friends of St Dunstan’s) who ensure that our new families are invited to summer play dates and picnics to get to know the community better over the long holiday period. Then ahead of the first day, our new pupils have a morning in school before the rest of the Junior School returns. This means that by the time the first full day comes around, nothing feels new, and they are eager to get started! That said, our team of highly skilled and experienced Nursery and Reception Teachers and Teaching Assistants (three of the four staff members in Nursery are trained teachers and the remaining Teaching Assistants have high-level qualifications) are on hand to offer support and soon find an activity to help settle any children who may find separation more challenging on the first few days.
St Dunstan’s has a lovely woodland classroom, can you tell our readers more about this and how it provides opportunities for the children?
“With our Forest School trained Woodland Classroom Coordinator taking the lead, our Woodland Classroom has become such a valuable resource for all our pupils”
With our Forest School trained Woodland Classroom Coordinator taking the lead, our Woodland Classroom has become such a valuable resource for all our pupils. Since we began using it, the space has evolved rapidly, largely due to a need to respond to the evergrowing habitats of our minibeast and animal friends, who were eager to see what all the excitement was about.
Our Nursery and Reception pupils spend at least one full day every week in wellies and rainsuits in the Woodland Classroom, come rain or shine, with pupils from Years 1 to 6 using the space when it complements their focus topics.
Our Woodland Classroom sessions enable pupils to take educational risks, but in a safe, nurturing and supportive learning environment. Pupils develop meaningful connections with the world around them, instilling a sense of belonging to an interconnected world. We see the space as simply a classroom without walls, which enables open-ended, critical thinking skills, where children are learning
that they can lead their own learning, which does not begin and end in school, but continues through to adulthood. This engenders teamwork and problem-solving skills as pupils interact with nature and better understand how it adapts to the changing of the seasons.
We aim here at St Dunstan’s to create a balance of confident city children alongside resilient countryside adventurers, and seize any opportunity for our pupils to see the natural fun that can be had whilst learning about a world where they will one day become proactive global citizens.
How does St Dunstan’s Junior School balance academic excellence and the students wellbeing?
We pride ourselves at St Dunstan’s for excellent pastoral care and this really does lie at the heart of our educational offering.
It is essential for me when recruiting staff to join the Junior School team, that they believe that it is only when pupils feel safe, settled and happy in school, that they can
thrive academically. Pupil wellbeing is not seen as secondary, it is seen as the foundation of any academic success. We therefore make sure that we build strong, trusting and positive relationships with our pupils and families, ensuring that they also have lasting friendships and understand how to navigate these during their time in school.
Our College Wellness Centre is a hub of pupil wellbeing, where our pupils can have some quiet time away from busy school life, speak to a school counsellor if they feel it is helpful or see the School Nurse if they need medical support. Many of our Junior School teachers are Youth Mental Health First Aiders and we offer drop-in ‘Be Kind to Your Mind’ sessions for pupils who want some advice or to talk through something they may have on their mind. Personal, Social, Health and Economic lessons (entitled our Stuart Curriculum) are taught by members of our pastoral team and are not considered an extra in our curriculum that we make time for if it suits us, it is a dedicated lesson every week where pupils learn about our three key strands: Relationships, Skills for the Future and Critical Thinking. We see these lessons as having equal importance on the timetable as English and maths.
What do you enjoy most about your role as Head of the Junior School?
Where to begin?! I truly relish the fact that no two days are the same in my job. Whilst it is hard to move away from having a form of your own as you enter leadership, I see that the benefit is in getting to know all 390 children and their families and expanding the positive relationships you have with pupils beyond just one year group. With this being my sixth year as Head of St Dunstan’s Junior School, I am now able to see the wider impact of important strategic developments I have
taken the lead with some years ago. To know that decisions we have made as a team have had a visible long-term positive impact is incredibly rewarding and helps us realise that we are on the right track with what it is we are aiming to achieve in our school. But there are always new ways in which you can move forward, make improvements and learn and the inability to stand still in a role like this one keeps it exciting and fresh. AWARD-WINNING EDUCATION
Ballard School has been recognised, once again, by the prestigious Independent School of the Year Awards, winning their Co-educational School of the Year Award 2024. This follows Ballard reaching the finals for Sport in 2023 and Performing Arts in 2022. Ballard have also reached the finals of the Independent School Association’s Award for Fine Arts and Design, the MTI Award in Musical Theatre Provision Awards, as well as being the current Languagenut Primary champion. So, what makes award-winning education?
At Ballard, they believe abilities and intelligence are not fixed, all can flourish and excel when given the tools and environment to develop self-knowledge and resilience. A vast array of opportunities are provided, but how they empower and inspire pupils to seize these opportunities is what sets Ballard apart.
Co-education is at the heart of Ballard’s inclusive philosophy. All pupils are equal - boys and girls learn with and from each other, through collaboration and lively competition. In an atmosphere of inclusivity and kindness, every child is stretched in their talents and
encouraged to tackle what doesn’t come easily. Boy, girl, expert, novice - no subject or interest is beyond reach. With over 155 co-curricular activities, from Mandarin to Citizenship, children learn and play together.
PSHE (Y1-Y11) encourages mutual understanding, with pupils emboldened to take charge of their lives and make positive choices, supported by strong proactive pastoral care. For example, their ‘Ballard on Board’ programme helps pupils to understand and navigate the complexities of friendship and find their own solutions. Pupil voice is listened to, with the School Council leading many initiatives including Ballard’s eco agenda and inclusive uniform choices.
Ballard was the first school in the UK to have two electric minibuses and plan to be carbon-neutral by 2050. Pupils enjoy the 34-acre site, playing, exploring and working within several ecosystems, where wildlife flourishes. Nature walks, Forest School and other outdoor learning opportunities encourage pupils to observe and interact with nature, whilst enjoying plenty of fresh air.
The success of their approach is continually reflected in Ballard’s exceptional GCSE results: with a 95% pass rate (9-4), 35% (9-7) and an average 0.79 added value for each pupil, across all subjects this year. Inspirational teachers give up weekends and holidays to provide additional revision sessions for their GCSE pupils and the timetable is adapted during the examination period so that pupils are always in the same lesson as their GCSE subject prior to the exam, e.g. a Physics lesson before their Physics examination.
Staff believe in Ballard’s mission - to ensure that no child gets left behind, encouraging pupils to think of others, contribute positively and make the world better. Pupils regularly complete amazing feats for charity, as do parents and staff. As a community, Ballard has regular appeals as well as reacting to international disasters. Last Christmas, over 40 Ballard family members ran the Santa Dash in Lymington, becoming their largest fundraiser for this event. They also made the largest ever single donation received by the New Forest Basics Bank in October.
Ballard doesn’t just educate and encourage their pupils to be charitable for events, they encourage it in their everyday behaviour; to be upstanders, not bystanders. Ballard’s values - The Ballard ‘Be’s – are instilled from the start: Be positive, kind, curious, respectful, responsible, honest and safe. As a result, new pupils are welcomed and
quickly feel that they belong with many parents talking about the transformation of their child and the positivity of ‘The Ballard Effect.’ When they leave at Year 11, Ballard pupils do so with a powerful sense of self, equipped to build a bright future in our fastchanging world.

“I joined Ballard in Year 7 and really loved the huge number of opportunities available to me. The teachers make the lessons fun and there is a long list of extracurricular clubs so there is something for everyone! I have had so much fun, from being part of orchestra, cheerleading and theatre productions to doing 3D printing, laser cutting and really great science experiments. My favourite memories are making new friends and laughing a lot whilst also learning a lot!”
Pupil Y8
“What was deeply impressive was the kindness and confidence shown by all the pupils we spoke to and engaged with. They were quietly confident, very happy with their school and enjoying their learning and a wide range of activities. We decided on Ballard and we have never looked back. It was our choice to send our children to Ballard, but it is our children’s feedback that keeps them there, day after day.” Parent ballardschool.co.uk
FORRES SANDLE MANOR
Unveils New Pre Prep Outdoor Playground
Forres Sandle Manor, the leading independent school in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, has proudly launched its brand-new Pre Prep Outdoor Playground. Officially opened this morning, the new space is set to transform outdoor learning for the school’s youngest pupils.
The playground was completed during the first half of the autumn term and is ready for children to enjoy from 8th November 2024. Designed as an extension of the indoor classrooms, it provides an engaging and imaginative environment where children can thrive.
Anna Matthews, Director of Operations, highlighted the significance of the new playground as an important addition to Forres Sandle Manor’s facilities: “We are delighted to announce the opening of our new playground, a space thoughtfully designed to nurture the adventurous spirit and natural curiosity of our youngest students. This playground is more than just a place to play; it’s an environment where children can explore, learn, and grow. We look forward to seeing the joy and excitement this new addition will bring to our school community..”
Mark Howe, Head of Forres Sandle Manor, highlighted the significance of the investment as a first step in a broader vision for the school’s growth:
“We’re excited to unveil this wonderful new playground, which represents both an enhancement of our outdoor facilities and the beginning of a larger journey of investment at Forres Sandle Manor. This project is the first of many as we work towards creating an environment that fully supports our pupils’ learning
and development. Over the coming years, we’re committing to significant developments, including a multi-million-pound STEAM building, to ensure that our students benefit from outstanding facilities that inspire and equip them for an ever-evolving world.”
Tracy Spottiswood, Head of Pre Prep, highlighted how the area will contribute to children’s development:
“The new outdoor area has been designed to ensure that all children in our Pre Prep classes can access high-quality learning experiences outside, whatever the weather. With climbing structures, balancing equipment, and plenty of open space, the playground promotes the development of gross motor skills while encouraging imaginative play, social skills and independent learning.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on the first week back after half term, was attended by both staff and pupils, who were eager to explore the new facilities. The playground is expected to be a central part of the school’s commitment to providing a balanced education, integrating academic learning with physical wellbeing.
This significant investment in outdoor learning reinforces Forres Sandle Manor’s dedication to providing exceptional opportunities for all its pupils. The school has experienced a 30% increase in student numbers over the last two years. Our expansion to offer GCSEs from September 2025 is part of a wider plan to develop a forward-thinking curriculum, supported by substantial investment in new facilities, including a state-of-the-art STEAM building, set for completion in the summer of 2025.

TALBOT HEATH AND THE PSS TO FUNDRAISE FOR EXCITING OUTDOOR LEARNING PROJECTS
Talbot Heath is excited to announce a new fundraising initiative in partnership with the Parent Staff Society (PSS) aimed at enhancing the outdoor experiences of our students. Together, we are committed to creating outdoor spaces that inspire exploration, learning, and a deep connection to nature.
“ The classroom will even feature a living roof, which will encourage biodiversity”
the school, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in our Outdoor Learning curriculum. The classroom will even feature a living roof, which will encourage biodiversity and provide a hands-on educational resource for students interested in ecology and environmental science.
One of our recent achievements, made possible by the generous support of the PSS, was the creation of The Hive – a dedicated outdoor adventure playground for our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) students. This wonderful play area allows our youngest learners to enjoy the outdoors and develop their adventurous spirits safely, no matter the weather. With eco-friendly design at its core, The Hive is both fun and sustainable, providing the perfect environment for exploration and play.
Building on this success, our next project will be the installation of an outdoor classroom on Boarders Green (subject to planning approval). Designed to blend seamlessly into the school grounds, this outdoor learning space will be accessible to all pupils across
Looking ahead, our future fundraising goals include a Fairy Trail for the Junior School, outdoor hideaway shelters for Senior School students, and an investment in infrared cameras to observe and better understand the wildlife we’re fortunate to share our campus with— both day and night.
We’re thrilled about these upcoming projects and invite our community to join us at our planned fundraising events throughout the year. Your support will help us continue to enrich the outdoor experiences and education of our students, fostering a lifelong appreciation for nature and sustainability.
We look forward to seeing you at our events and working together to achieve these new and exciting goals! talbotheath.org

WHAT FRAGRANCE TO WEAR DEPENDING ON YOUR STYLE
Fragrance makes up an essential part of your personal style. When searching for your signature scent, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the abundance of perfumes out there, from classics by the likes of Chanel and Dior, to lesser-known gems from Dossier and Diptyque.
So, where do you begin when trying to suss out a scent that suits your style? Beyond practical considerations – such as whether it’s office-appropriate or how long it lasts on the skin – the best perfumes are those that smell beautiful to you and conjure a range of emotions as a result.
That comes down to science. Here’s what to look for when finding the perfect perfume to suit your style, according to experts.
WHERE DO I START?
Shopping for fragrances has become increasingly difficult in recent times, with the rise of online shopping, finding you signature scent is more of a task than a treat.
The easy part about shopping
Here are expert tips on matching your perfume to your outfit. By
RABANNE MILLION GOLD FOR HER EAU DE PARFUM 50ML, £95, THE FRAGRANCE SHOP
for fragrance as opposed to make-up is that you can’t go wrong. “Searching for the one is like a game you can’t lose – each single fragrance you try will bring you closer to the understanding of what works for you or what doesn’t,” says Oriflame’s fragrance specialist, Anya Pavlenko.
The Fragrance Shop’s Rachel Goalby says you should start with understanding the science behind your fragrance. “When searching for your signature scent, start by learning how fragrances are layered.
“Top notes are what you smell first, usually lighter and fresher; heart notes follow, creating the main body of the fragrance, often floral or spicy; and base notes are the deep, lasting scents, like woods, amber, or musk.”
MATCHING YOUR SCENT TO YOUR STYLE
Cottage-core
If you adore the soft, pastoral charm of the ‘cottage-core’ aesthetic, fragrances that evoke warmth and natural surroundings are key.
Edgy maximalist
Pavlenko advises.
If you’re wanting something strong, “Boss Alive by Hugo Boss is a good choice,” says Goalby. “With its bold mix of plum, apple and vanilla, this fragrance commands attention without overwhelming the senses, just like a confident professional.”
“Look for scents that evoke cosiness and warmth,” says Floral Street’s founder, Michelle Feeney. When it comes to notes, “The combination of natural vanilla with jasmine gives a comforting yet confident vibe, like a warm hug.”
Classic scents like Lancôme’s La Vie Est Belle are good examples, while Maison Noir’s Claudio Denz suggests, “a herbal essence to a fragrance that embodies the free-spirited and natural vibe of cottagecore is key when pairing.”
If you’re wanting a less-sweet and more earthy scent, look for notes like amber, cedar and tonka bean.
Corporate siren
If you’re wanting to channel a more Devil Wears Prada ‘corporate siren’ approach, you’re probably looking to exude sophistication and elegance.
“When it comes to ‘office-appropriate’ scents – the territory seems to be quite subjective, with no clear rules,” says Pavlenko. “But think about it this way: if your colleagues can guess you are already in the office because of the strong trail of perfume they detected in the elevator, you might want to reconsider your choices!”
“Think fresher fragrances with uplifting floral-fruity combos to keep your energy high while lasting the whole working day,”
If your style leans into the leopard print, red lipstick look donned by the likes of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne, then an unapologetic fragrance should follow suit.
“Rabanne Million Gold always brings necessary drama with its intoxicating blend of rose, white flower bouquet and mineral musk –perfect for someone unafraid to make a statement,” says Goalby.
MAISON MARGIELA REPLICA FROM THE GARDEN EAU DE TOILETTE - 30ML, £62, SPACE NK
HUGO BOSS WOMEN’S ALIVE EAU DE PARFUM50ML, £69.60 (WAS £87), LOOK FANTASTIC
“Yet, Gaultier Scandal is another great fit, with its rich combination of honey, blood orange, and patchouli,” Goalby adds, “a scent that’s as daring and unpredictable as your fashion choices.”
If you want something less dramatic, “Try a fragrance that has some surprising notes that are more playful,” advises Feeney. Something warm and floral, with notes of amber works best for a sultry but cool look.
Breezy boho
For the free-spirited among us, something light, earthy and effortless is the scent to match the boho aesthetic.
Yet when it comes to looking effortless, “The first rule? Don’t try too hard to look cool,” says Pavlenko.
“Combination of skin-like musks with addictive, creamy sandalwood and the occasional touch of fruits will help you to keep it casual with an effortless bohemian touch.”
The pioneering brand of boho, Chloé, has a great set of fragrances to perfectly embody the look. “Chloé Nomade is a beautiful match, with its notes of oak moss, Mirabelle plum and freesia, it evokes a sense of wanderlust and freedom,” says Goalby.
“Combination of skinlike musks with addictive, creamy sandalwood and the occasional touch of fruits will help you to keep it casual with an effortless bohemian touch”
“If you’re seeking something a bit more floral, Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia captures the essence of a carefree bohemian day with its blend of pear blossom, red berries and gardenia – both grounded and graceful.
THE KEY TO FINDING YOUR SIGNATURE SCENT
“When choosing a signature scent, think about how you want to feel and how you want others to perceive you,” says Goalby.
“Ultimately, your signature scent should feel like a second skin –one that expresses your personality and makes you feel good about yourself, whether that’s cosy, bold, or effortlessly chic!”

A WILDE OLFACTORY JOURNEY
Nearly three centuries ago, Juan Famenias Floris crafted his first fragrance, recording the formula in a substantial leather-bound book. Over the years, he created personalised scents for his esteemed clientele including Florence Nightingale, James Bond creator Ian Flemming, Marylin Monroe, Queen Victoria and more, each new formula meticulously handwritten into this same book. This record, preserved for generations at 89 Jermyn Street, has inspired the Floris fragrances crafted today, forming an essential link to our origins.
The Floris shop at 89 Jermyn Street in London’s St. James’s district has always been at the heart of the brand. Here, Floris and his wife, Elizabeth, began offering perfumes, combs, and shaving essentials to London’s elite. To this day, the shop proudly displays its original Spanish mahogany cabinets, purchased from the 1851 Great Exhibition. Now, nine generations on, Floris remains a proudly independent family brand, with its eighth and ninth generation at the helm.
While Floris honours its heritage, our approach to fragrance creation embraces the contemporary, inspired by experiences that resonate with the present. We create emotions by layering fragrance oils like brushstrokes, finding harmony between timeless materials and modern inspirations.
Heritage comes with the beauty of longevity and passion. It’s very rare to be able to step back in time without having the passing of eras decay and tarnish modern reinventions. Keeping integrity and compassion is an elegant dance between the then and now. A delicate balance shared between Floris and one of our beloved clientele, Oscar Wilde.
Wilde visited the shop in the late 1800s to discuss with the family current local affairs and general happenings around Jermyn Street, and purchasing the original Malmaison Fragrance. Fashioned with dandy and finely polished sophistication, Wilde fastened a single green carnation to his lapel as the final accoutrement for the perfect soigné. A Parisian trend to identify oneself as homosexual. Wilde was a creative revolutionary of individuality, freedom and self. Forward thinking with ideals of the future that others had not yet thought about or embraced. His notions of love were expressed through his writing, most passionately, between himself and Sir Alfred Douglas, star-crossed lovers, forbidden to love. Desire yearns through corresponding letters and

Take charge with reckless love, vigour and intention, to indulge an olfactory sense. ‘Wilde’ captures sparkling bergamot and gentle citrus blossom, layered with the spicy combination of white jasmine, ginger and green carnation, an affirmation to Wilde’s love and affection to Lord Alfred Douglas. The warming base of pure sandalwood oil, olibanum and benzoin add a rich sophistication and depth. Understated but with an unmistakable presence.
With the passing of time, the beauty of reincarnation, and the addition to the new Wilde Eau de Parfum, the Floris perfumers have also meticulously re-envisioned a staple of 19th century opulence and favourite of Oscar Wilde, Malmaison Encore. Malmaison Encore was inspired by the original Malmaison fragrance, an iconic scent which has remained one of the most popular fragrances in the Floris repertoire for almost 150 years. Malmaison Encore opens with a spicy blend of clove, cinnamon and zesty lemon, creating a warm and inviting top note. The floral bouquet of carnation, rose, and ylang ylang, build the romantic and sensual heart of the fragrance, while the base notes of cedarwood, musk and patchouli bring depth and sophistication leaving a lingering trail of captivating allure. The final touch
of vanilla, together with the spicy carnation, evoke the elegance and timeless beauty of this floral amber fragrance.
Floris proudly showcases its rich history and tradition, offering a wide array of fragrances, each with its own story - from the spirited Wilde, to roses inspired by the landscapes of Morocco, to scents created for royal weddings.

Augustine Jewels: New York Collection
Augustine Jewels is thrilled to unveil their New York Collection, an extraordinary line that draws deep inspiration from the iconic skyscrapers and architectural wonders of New York City. This luxurious collection weaves together Yellow Gold, White Diamonds, and Black Enameling to create a sophisticated and modern array of gemstone jewellery, capturing the city’s urban elegance and timeless style.
Alexandra, the designer behind Augustine Jewels, found herself deeply inspired by New York’s grand architecture on a recent visit. The grandeur of the city’s buildings, particularly the Chrysler Building with its intricate Art Deco fan pattern, captivated her. This striking motif, symbolic of New York’s skyline, became central to her designs. Alexandra meticulously sketched and reimagined this fan pattern to capture the building’s elegance and dynamism. The result is a series of exquisite pieces that spotlight this iconic detail, most notably in the cascading Art Deco Gold Fan Earrings and Statement Gold and Black Enamel Rings.
These pieces exude both boldness and sophistication, and the fan motif also graces the matching Statement Art Deco Necklace and Earrings. This collection is one of Alexandra’s first to emphasise intricate metalwork as a focal point, celebrating craftsmanship and architectural elegance.
The New York Collection goes beyond architecture to embody the city’s glitz and glamour. Each piece reflects Manhattan’s sparkle, particularly in the Delicate Diamond Necklaces, Diamond
Stud Earrings, and Diamond by the Yard Bracelets. These designs highlight the gemstones themselves, showcasing pear-cut and roundcut diamonds in understated Yellow Gold settings, allowing each diamond to capture the light with unparalleled brilliance. This minimalist approach emphasises the natural beauty of the diamonds, creating a graceful luxury that transitions effortlessly from day to night.
Additionally, Augustine Jewels has expanded its earring range with the introduction of their first Threader Earrings. These refined, lightweight earrings bring a modern touch to the collection and are thoughtfully designed for a perfect fit, offering a blend of elegance and versatility. The New York Collection embodies Augustine Jewels’ bold new direction—a tribute to the allure of the city that never sleeps and a celebration of timeless luxury in the form of inspired, artful jewellery.

REDISCOVER LIFE WITH TMS: A Revolutionary Treatment for Mental Health
Mental health struggles can feel overwhelming, especially when traditional treatments like medication don’t provide the relief you need. For many, medications come with unwanted side effects such as fatigue, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction. If you’re seeking a new approach, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) offers a ground-breaking alternative.
TMS is a non-invasive, medication-free treatment that uses magnetic pulses to target specific areas of the brain, helping alleviate symptoms of depression, OCD, addiction, and other mental health conditions. Approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as safe and effective, TMS promotes neuroplasticity— helping your brain rebuild healthy connections.
“Historically, treatments for depression have always focused on making patients less depressed. With TMS, patients start to feel positive again. Their confidence increases, their motivation returns, and they begin to socialise again. You can almost literally see patients’ brains lighting up,” says Dr. Leigh Neal, MB BCh MRCGP DRCOG FRCPsych MD, Medical Director at Smart TMS.
Unlike traditional therapies, TMS doesn’t require chemicals, anaesthesia, or hospital stays. Patients can return to their daily activities immediately, with few side effects—usually mild headaches or fatigue.
Smart TMS, the UK and Ireland’s largest provider of TMS, has helped hundreds of patients regain control of their mental health.
With clinics in High Street Kensington, London and St Albans as well as across the UK and Ireland, we offer expert, compassionate care. 56% of our depression patients see significant symptom reduction, and nearly half achieve full remission.
Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, PTSD, or addiction, TMS could be the breakthrough treatment you’ve been waiting for.

ALEXA CHUNG
is creative director for Barbour’s AW24 collection
The British model and presenter has a longstanding history of collaborating with the brand. By
Lara Owen
Model and presenter Alexa Chung has taken on the role of creative director and designer for Barbour’s new collection, entitled ‘The Edit, by Alexa Chung’.
It marks Chung’s fifth collaboration with the brand – and it’s being billed as her ‘most personal’ Barbour collection yet.
The style icon, 40, has long been an endorser of the brand’s iconic British wax jackets, and for this autumn/winter she has collaborated closely with Barbour’s in-house team to create a fresh take on the vintage styles.
The collection includes quilted and wax jackets, cardigans, shirts and, a new addition for Chung, wellington boots. Each item is named after her close friends and family, making it her most personal collaboration to date.
Chung first rose to fame as a style ‘it girl’ of the early Noughties, hailed for her inimitable style and witty personality, with Vogue’s Anna Wintour calling her “a phenomenon”.
Her fashion is known for being quintessentially British, with an eclectic spin on whatever looks she puts together – and
her influence is undeniable. When Chung wore a Barbour jacket to Glastonbury Festival, she sparked a new wave of demand for the classic style.
For this collection, Chung reflected on her lifelong connection with Barbour, noting: “I am so pleased to be exploring a new chapter with Barbour. Designing this collection was a total joy.
“My intention was to create something immediate that reflects my wardrobe, interests and style in this moment, while staying true to the brand’s epic heritage.”
Born in rural Hampshire, Chung drew upon her childhood memories of horse rides through lush fields, as well as stomping through the mud at Glastonbury over the years.
As creative director of the collection, she promised to bring her long-standing relationship with Barbour into every piece. See the full collection in-store and online at Barbour.com.

ALIGHTING REPORT
s darkness draws in, and with a renewed focus on the ambiance and feel of our homes, lighting design is under the spotlight, shaping the atmosphere in ways that go far beyond pure illumination. As technology, craft and imagination intersect, lights are now so much more than just functional – they have become statement pieces that reflect individual style and set the tone of a space. From sculptural forms that demand attention and create drama to calming designs that draw on the home’s ever-increasing connection to nature, lighting is evolving to enhance not just how we see a room, but how we experience it.
For 2024, lighting trends are pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation, with an emphasis on unique forms, expressive design and a contemporary connection to nature. Whether it’s bold, futuristic structures or a spectrum of colours from dramatic to calm, lighting has become an art form in its own right. As the design world increasingly moves towards curating spaces that feel personal and meaningful, lighting has evolved into an essential tool to transform a space from every day to exceptional –and not only with luminescence. Here’s where contemporary pendant lights, table lights, floor lights, wall lights and more are heading.
TIMBER TOUCH:
Sleek materials like glass and metal often define lighting design, but the introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home. Juxtaposing the soft pattern of grain and timber’s alluring organic texture with modern technology creates a captivating balance between nature and innovation. One element feels artisanal and ancient, the other, precise and industrial. Together, they form a fusion that feels both timeless and forward-thinking, inviting
“The introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home”
us to bask in the tactile beauty of the natural world alongside the precision of contemporary design.
OPAQUE DIFFUSION:
Clear bulbs? Not anymore. Modern designs favor opaque, misty, whitetoned glass, emitting soft, diffused light that transforms a room into a serene, tranquil haven. The subtle white-ness adds understated elegance while offering space for experimentation. Oversized
and artistic, these glass bulbs, often perched on minimalist bases, seem to defy gravity, creating focal points that elevate a room’s ambiance. It’s all about the mood they set, rather than their understated aesthetic appeal.
THE ART OF LIGHTING:
Is it a bird? A plane? No, it’s a sculptural designer floor lamp. Lighting is evolving beyond function, prioritizing bold, artistic statements over pure illumination. Gone are the days of task lights—now, freestanding lamps embrace originality and creative form. From gravitydefying designs to totem-like structures, lighting pushes boundaries, transforming into art pieces rather than mere light sources. Expect everbolder designs as our perceptions of what a lamp should be continue to shift.
SOFT ROSE:
“These bold brights demand attention, each adding drama and energy; combine all three for a dynamic, lively atmosphere to invigorate any room”
The pastel lighting colour of the moment? A delicate rose pink takes the spotlight, adding subtle, sugary charm to interiors. This nearlyneutral tone brings playful sweetness without overwhelming, blending effortlessly with white or clear glass. Often featured in pared-back shapes or on smaller accents, this soft hue shines with understated whimsy, transforming lighting into both functional pieces and artful statements that sprinkle spaces with joy.
LINEAR LIGHTING:
Today’s pendant lights shed utilitarian vibes, favouring elongated, eye-level designs that illuminate entire surfaces—ideal for dining tables or islands. These streamlined pieces replace rows of matching
pendants, cutting back on ceiling support and wiring. Designs range from minimal, thin lines to thicker tubes, with options for ornamental bulbs and shades. Efficientyet-bold, they balance simplicity with unexpected details, playfully breaking from uniformity to add personality and brightness to interiors.
HONEY HUED:
This season, honeyed tones take the spotlight in lighting design, casting a soothing glow even when switched off. These rich, golden hues evoke sunset warmth, autumn leaves, and candlelight, infusing spaces with natural comfort. Modern pieces feature all-over golden finishes, often in smooth, rounded shapes reminiscent of honey dips. Large or subtle, honey-hued lights bring an organic, nature-inspired touch indoors, exuding a golden warmth that feels timeless and serene.
PRIMARY BRIGHTS:
Seeking colourful, modern lighting with punch? Primary tones –pillar-box red, sunshine yellow, Yves Klein blue – are ideal. These bold brights demand attention, each adding drama and energy; combine all three for a dynamic, lively atmosphere to invigorate any room. Designs range from chunky, commanding forms to sleek, understated shapes that showcase colour in subtler ways. Primary-coloured lights add personality and flair, serving as eyecatching, conversation-starting focal points and practical sources of illumination for a vibrant, audacious mood. chaplins.co.uk

SPIRAL CELLARS
APassion. Excellence. Wonder.
s any wine collector will tell you, much of the appeal of wine lies in its mystique, the hope that with time and careful cellaring, a rather average wine can evolve into something much more complex, characterful and interesting. Creating the optimum environmental and climatic conditions in which wine is allowed to develop over time, is something of an art form. To then take all this cellaring know-how and present as something breathtakingly beautiful, is nothing short of magic.
Spiral Cellars, the UK’s leading purveyor of luxury wine storage has been doing just that for over 40 years, so it’s little wonder that UK based Spiral Cellars are considered one of the world’s leading purveyors of luxury wine rooms. Offering an
extensive range of cellaring solutions to suit all tastes, spaces and budgets, the company has become the go-to number to call for wine lovers, celebrities, property developers and interior designers looking to add statement wine storage to their properties.
Spiral Cellar
In the world of wine cellaring, the iconic underground Spiral Cellar is a true design classic, having injected some serious ‘wow factor’ into thousands of properties both in the UK and further afield. It’s a spectacular and space-saving way to professionally store up to 1600 bottles of wine at home, yet famously does so without the need for a mechanised cooling system.
The UnSpiral Cellar
Launched last year and consisting of 38 modular and interchangeable components, the UnSpiral Cellar is the easy and affordable way to create flexible and affordable wine storage to suit any room or space. Offering the same limestone concrete aesthetic of the underground cellar AND all the tailored individualism of a wine room, it’s no wonder the new UnSpiral Cellar has been such an instant hit with wine loving customers.
Wine Rooms, Walls and Cabinets
Gone are the days when the only wine room option was an eyewateringly expensive bespoke commission. Over the last few years, Spiral Cellars has been quietly leading a cellaring revolution, having introduced a range of wine room products and services to suit all projects and budgets. Alongside their high-end, tailored end-toend managed service they now also offer a design only service, considered by those in the know to be a savvy way to acquire a bespoke looking wine room but without the bespoke price tag.
Ready to Cellar Collection
Ideal for wine lovers who yearn for a Spiral Cellars designed wine room
but who perhaps don’t have the space or budget to dedicate to such a top-end luxury, the Ready to Cellar Collection, is an exclusive range of some of the same exquisitely designed bottle display and storage components the company use in their custom-designed wine rooms, now available to purchase by private clients and trade professionals for self-assembly within their own independent cellaring projects.
The appeal of the Collection lies is it’s utter flexibility, it’s suitability for projects involving either twelve or twelve hundred bottles of wine. Customers can select from the wide range of kit style pieces to create their own wine space, exactly as they want it, regardless of size or shape. And with all pieces available in a variety of finishes and sizes, there is plenty or scope to create truly personalised wine storage.
Whether you dream of a spectacular cellar, a walk-in wine room, a state-of-the-art wine wall, or simply some expert advice on climate control, you can be sure that Spiral Cellars will create a solution that fits your needs, taste and of course, your lifestyle.
The price of a Spiral Cellar varies according to depth, door and method of installation but start from £22,500. Custom Design commissions start from £7,500 and a typical UnSpiral Cellar project costs between £1,000 - £2,000 per square metre of wall. spiralcellars.com; 020 3815 3329; info@spiralcellars.com
