Radlett Park Golf Club lstree Golf and Country Club has changed it’s name to Radlett Park Golf Club and recently opened a spectacular brand new clubhouse with panoramic views of the golf course.
This popular Hertfordshire golf club has also undergone major changes during the last two years to the challenging 18 hole parkland course. These improvements include the extension of the superb water feature in front of the 11th green. There is also a new three tiered green on the 18th hole, which has been changed from a relatively straight forward par 5 to a tough par 4. With the current refurbishment and modernisation of the existing driving range into a 8 APRIL2012
new state of the art floodlit Range due to open in Spring 2013, it certainly is exciting times for the club and the membership. The members had an added reason to be excited just before Christmas with a visit to the
club from the World’s number 1 golfer for a filming session for The Sports Personality of the Year Awards. Members were surprised and delighted to see Northern Ireland superstar Rory McIlroy hitting balls on the 5th hole at Radlett Park. He happily posed
for pictures and signed caps and anything else that members could lay their hands on during his brief visit. This was certainly a talking point for weeks afterwards. There was always a friendly welcome at Elstree Golf and Country Club and that welcome is still there from members and staff at Radlett Park Golf Club. The changes to the course coupled with a new clubhouse and Driving Range facilities mean it is a great time to be associated with the club. ord’s has long been seen as the ‘Home of Cricket’ and the game’s spiritual ‘headquarters’. But its importance is not merely historical. In practice it remains, to this day, perhaps the most important single place in world cricket.
Its owner, Marylebone Cricket Club, remains the guardian of both the Laws and the Spirit of Cricket, and MCC sides (which play around 500 games a year) perform a key role in promoting cricket - in Britain and elsewhere. In addition, Lord’s is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), as well as the European Cricket Council (ECC). A Touch of Class 2011 Last year Vanessa Class School of Dance celebrated their 10th anniversary for 10 years of producing song and dance shows for charity, called “A TOUCH OF CLASS”.
They have raised over £95,000 over the last 10 years. Children aged between 2-21yrs from the school have performed song and dance routines from pop to musical theatre. The children have been working for the last five months to perform 2 shows at The Radlett Centre which were held on Saturday March 12th at 7.00pm and Sunday March 13th at 2.00pm. The shows were sold out on both performances and there were 2 celebrities arrive to host the shows. Tom Law (from Eastenders) and Ziggy Lichman (from Big brother and Northern Line). The celebrities welcomed everyone and then stayed to watch the whole show and draw a raffle at the end. Ziggy Lichman even got up on the stage and danced with the zumba crew that performed in the show. He was a great support. They were both taken back with how professional the performances were and how much talent there was in the show. The 14 APRIL2012
children sang some amazing songs both from the theatre and pop and the dances had fantastic choreography. The whole audience seemed to be mesmerised continually. At the end of the show a few children were awarded medals for their efforts and enthusiaism throughout the year. Each number was colourful, dynamic and exciting. It was suitable for any age to enjoy a couple of hours of entertainment. The show this year had a toy shop theme where the characters came to life. Jessica Class aged 17 opened the show with a contempary dance number where she fell asleep and had a dream. This is when all the characters woke up and came to life. Some of the numbers included were, I have a dream (abba), My life will suck without you (glee), California girls, Jai-ho, Waka waka, The time, Beautiful monster, Loose my breath (soldiers) sugar plum fairy and many more.
Each year a charity is chosen to raise the money for, which has included Fight for Life, BBC’s Children in Need, Children with Leukaemia and Mac Millan Nursing. The celebrity hosts in the past have included Nikki Clarke, Rachael Stevens, Stefan Booth, Natalie Cassidy, Fearne Cotton, Lacey Turner, Duncan James and Thomas law (eastenders) This year the chosen charity was “Fight for Life” charity. They hope to raise between £3500 - £4000.
Vanessa Class has been a dancer herself since the age of three, trained at The Arts Educational stage school, became a member of The Vienna Festival Ballet Company and then opened up her own schools in Harrow and Elstree. After she had children she opened up another school in Bushey Heath. She teaches street jazz/hip
hop and tap to students between the ages of 2 – 21yrs. Every child of any ability gets to perform in her annual charity shows. She has 2 girls herself, Jessica 17 and Sasha 16 who also perform in the shows. Although the dance school is for dancing, there are some extremely talented singers and a few months prior to the show there are regular singing groups to create some solo and group songs for the performances. The classes are held at St Peter’s Church Hall on Mondays and Fridays. There is a new prereception/reception class starting in April. Also available are children’s birthday parties consisting of dance, song, hair and make-up. (Little stars parties), available for all ages. Anyone interested in any dance classes or parties please contact Vanessa Class on 07889405289.

Kay Greveson RGN BA (HONS) Independent prescriber
LONDON’S BOTOX QUEEN
here is an increasing trend for both men and women to seen non-surgical, non-invasive methods for achieving a younger look. There are various options available that fall into this category, including wrinkle relaxing injections such as Botox®, dermal fillers and skin peels, to name just a few. Erika Moore recently visited Sister Kay Greveson at her clinic in Hampstead after becoming increasingly frustrated by her lines and wrinkles. Here she outlines her experience. I work in a job that involves dealing with clients on a daily basis, so my appearance is important. I was increasingly aware of the lines on my forehead and between my eyes. I always felt as though I looked angry, and older than I was, even though I am only in my early 30’s. I approached Sister Kay Greveson her clinic within Aquarius Spa, Hampstead, about two months ago as I had been recommended to her by a friend. I was initially nervous as I have never had any sort of treatment like that before. I was worried about having the injections and what I would look like afterwards but Kay put my mind at ease immediately. We had a detailed chat about what results I wanted from the treatment; she took a medical history and some photographs. Kay explained that Botox® is a safe, naturally occurring protein that works by blocking nerve

IT WAS SO EXCITING TO SEE THE LINES DISAPPEARING LITTLE BY LITTLE EACH DAY AND I DON’T THINK I’VE EVER LOOKED IN THE MIRROR SO MUCH AS I DID IN THOSE FIRST 2 WEEKS! signals to specific muscles that cause facial expression; relaxing the muscle and making the treated area smoother and less wrinkled. She gave me the option of using a ‘numbing’ local anaesthetic cream, which I took. Despite being nervous, I did not find the procedure bad at all. Kay talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable throughout. She was very gentle and I hardly felt the injections; it certainly wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. She explained that
it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance. I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

HydraFacial The Hit A-List Treatment At The Harpenden Skin Clinic The Harpenden Skin Clinic is a medically-led service dedicated to natural looking results. Based within the relaxing environment of Harpenden’s stylish “Breathing Space” Spa, the clinic offers a range of leading aesthetic and non-surgical treatments to suit the individual needs of their clients. Janne Maheson – an aesthetic nurse practitioner, with extensive experience and expertise in aesthetic medicine and skin care – heads a dedicated team of staff, who are committed to maintaining a discreet and ethical service through meticulous yet friendly client care and consultation. One of the most exciting new treatments offered by The Harpenden Skin Clinic is the revolutionary HydraFacial, which has been shown to visibly improve the appearance of skin after just one session. Also known as Hydradermabrasion, this noninvasive skin resurfacing facial has quickly become one of the hottest trends in Hollywood. Celebrity fans include Beyoncé Knowles and Matthew McConaughey, whilst beauty editors regularly name HydraFacial as the secret weapon behind beautiful A-list skin. HydraFacial uses the latest aesthetic technology to provide highly efficient skin rejuvenation, 32 APRIL2012

but without the pain or irritation associated with previous skin resurfacing treatments. Rather than using abrasive techniques that can dry or irritate the skin, the HydraFacial exfoliates whilst simultaneously hydrating the area with an anti-oxidant serum. Intense hydration helps the existing skin cells to perform at their optimum, encourages the production of new cells and counteracts tissue damage and aging. The anti-oxidant serum also encourages the plumpingup of fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation, leading to an overall improvement in skin tone and texture. Hydration during treatment has elevated the HydraFacial to
the forefront of skin resurfacing procedures. The facial is a soothing and refreshing experience that is even suitable for sensitive skins and it provides more effective and reliable results than the previously popular microdermabrasion. During the HydraFacial, a handheld machine is gently stroked over the face in a continual motion. The painless device features a specially shaped HydraTip, which effectively dislodges dead skin and loosens particles on the upper epidermal layer. A rejuvenating serum is simultaneously directed onto the area via a unique transdermal infusion application.
HydraFacial has been clinically proven as an effective treatment for skin complaints such as hyper-pigmentation, fine lines, acne, oily skin, puffy eyes, sensitive skin, sun damage, age spots and blackheads. By blending available serums, various skin concerns can be targeted in one session and no downtime ensures a quick and easy solution for better skin.
The Hydrafacial is an ideal one-off treat to boost the skin or to create a fantastic radiance for a special event. Alternatively, a course of six weekly treatments is recommended for deeper treatment and to improve specific skin concerns. VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENTS AVAILABLE AT RIVERS HOSPITAL
W
ith warmer weather on its way, many of us are looking forward to swapping our winter layers for shorter summer clothes, and even getting into shape for the beach. However, many people may dread baring their legs in summer because of a very common problem – varicose veins. Approximately 30% of women and 15% of men develop varicose veins in their lifetime, and while the condition can be unsightly, it does not usually pose any serious health problems. Removal of varicose veins used to be a fairly standard treatment available on the NHS, but unfortunately, this is no longer the case. For most people who want their varicose veins treated for cosmetic reasons, the only option is to be treated privately. However, this does open up a lot more options to the patient. For those who wish to get their varicose veins treated privately, there are a number of different options, depending on the severity of the case. SURGICAL METHOD e surgical method usually involves a procedure to strip the non-functional vein from the affected area. e main disadvantages of conventional surgery for varicose veins have been the need for hospital admission, general anaesthesia and the extent of bruising and discomfort post operatively requiring time off work as well as restricted activities. Most surgeons recommend at least 1-2 weeks off work depending on the type of work. NON –SURGICAL METHOD Endovenous laser treatment’ (EVLT) involves passing a laser fibre along the abnormal vein. Using ultrasound to guide the fibre, the surgeon is able to treat the vein without stripping it from the body. e technique means that no overnight hospital stay is needed or

general anaesthetic used. is revolutionary procedure minimises the pain and bruising associated with conventional saphenous vein stripping and means that the usual 1-2 weeks off work can be avoided, as the operation is often performed under local anaesthetic. Rivers Hospital also provides Sclerotherapy treatment for thread veins. read Veins (also known as Spider veins or broken veins) are a common problem, particularly affecting women. Small red or purple veins can form anywhere on the leg and while they do not pose any major health risk, they may cause discomfort. Sclerotherapy works by injecting the thread veins with a small amount of solution, making them fade. As with all Rivers services, these consultations and treatments are carried out by fully trained and registered healthcare professionals in a clean, professional and friendly environment clinic, with strict measures for the control of infection For more information on the above treatments or to book an appointment, please contact 01279 602644 or email rivers.enquiries@ramsayhealth.co.uk ■

HEALTH & BEAUTY air removal is an issue for most women at some stage of their life. Whether it is waxing before a summer holiday, plucking or threading their eyebrows or tweezing out strong dark hairs that appear on the chin; women have always had to work hard to keep unwanted hairs at bay. These days, even men are having their chests and backs waxed in the quest to be a modern or ‘metro man’. In fact, hair growth can affect up to 70% of the population at some time during their lives and with the increasing popularity of hair removal, there have been a number of developments in permanent hair reduction technology. Through research into new technology, I have been able to introduce less painful methods of hair removal for clients who don’t like waxing, electrolysis or threading.
Hair-Raising Results words Carolina Brennan
IPL emits a light which is attracted to pigment in the hair and converts this light to thermal heat at the base of the hair follicle, heating it to 70 degrees which then destroys
the hair growth cycle... 1. Anagen - hair is growing and is connected to a blood supply at its root 2. Catagen - hair starts to detach from the root 3. Telogen - hair is about to fall out and may be replaced by another hair. The best time to treat hair is during the Anagen stage when it is still attached to the root.
36 APRIL2012
Applisonix is a new method that uses ultrasound technology to destroy the root of the hair painlessly and effectively. A probe is used to hold the hair whilst ultrasound is released down the hair shaft to the root so that the hair literally slides out. Clinical studies have shown that there is up to a 40% reduction in hair growth after the first treatment. Applisonix usually requires six to 12 treatments at monthly intervals.
VELLUS HAIR Dannes Alkaline Wash Vellus hair is the fine, downy hair that appears on the sides of the face, upper lip and chin. It often occurs when women are pregnant, menopausal or suffering from severe stress and can be difficult to eradicate permanently. Most women keep it at bay with waxing or threading it, but it usually grows back.

the root. Hair in the Anagen stage will not grow back when treated, but hair at other stages will have to be treated again. IPL usually requires six to 12 treatments at four to six weekly intervals.
LIGHT-COLOURED HAIR Applisonix IPL will not work on white, blonde, grey or red hair due to the lack of dark pigment. Until recently, electrolysis was the only technology that could
The Dannes Alkaline Wash was devised by a dermatologist to remove Vellus hair permanently. After a detailed consultation and patch test, an alkaline paste is applied to the area. The alkaline raises the PH level of the skin and destroys the superficial root underneath. The area is then returned to its normal PH level and is left smooth and hair free. Results can be achieved with as little as three to six treatments.

Bring on Spring Skin
HEALTH & BEAUTY
The recent mini-heatwave caught us all off guard. But along with the ice creams and sunbathing sessions came the annual horror of baring skin for the first time. Sales of SOS fake tan at Debenhams rocketed by 105% in reaction to the freakish warm weather. So next time the sun rears its head, be prepared with a spring skin routine. Transform those frosty, pasty arms and legs into glowing summer-ready limbs that don’t look like they’ve been hidden away in opaque tights 38 APRIL2012
and woolly cardigans for months. It’s time to glow and go with our foolproof skincare guide.
Revive skin
If your skin has been in hibernation under snuggly duvets and winter
layers, it’s time for a spring wakeup call. Kick-start your morning with a dry body brushing session prior to your shower. Brushing in circular motions will also remove redundant dry, dead skin cells. “Dry body brushing increases circulation
and brings nutrients to the skin’s surface for healthy-looking skin,” explains Jane Calderwood, beauty therapist at Champneys. It also gives an uplifting feeling, helps to shake off sleep and prepares you for the day ahead.”
HEALTH & BEAUTY Ditch any aromas that make you feel drowsy and use an invigorating shower gel with uplifting fragrances to start your day on a high. “Choose fresh, light spring smells,” Calderwood advises. “Tangy products like Champneys’ Citrus Blush range are perfect for this time of year as they’re uplifting and energising, with notes of ginger, grapefruit, lemon and vanilla.”
Recessionista alert Pump up the volume with a hair-raising buy one, get two free deal. Ojon is offering a free full-size Volume Advance Shampoo & Conditioner (worth £37.50) with any £20 purchase online, including free delivery.
Silky smooth
Radiant skin requires more than just a hero moisturising product. “The first step towards silky soft skin is to exfoliate once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface,” explains Dr Sue Mayou, cosmetic dermatologist and Aveeno consultant. “This helps to leave the skin smooth and improves light reflection off the surface which gives a healthy glow and a good base on which to apply a moisturiser.” If you want silky skin, it’s important to adopt a religiously regular moisturising regime to maximise hydration - random and slapdash applications just won’t do. Mayou recommends choosing a light moisturiser or even a spritz lotion that will sink in easily with minimum effort. “If you have dry or sensitive skin, certain areas like elbows, knees and ankles are likely to be drier than others, so pay particular attention to them when moisturising,” she suggests. During the skin-baring season, hair removal methods like shaving go up a notch. For perfect pins, avoid irritated skin by using lukewarm water and moisturising afterwards.

a shimmer. Harknett says: “Look for products that contain subtle shimmer particles so you end up looking more spring goddess than Christmas decoration.”
For super-subtle try a gradual tan, but you may need to take extra care with the application, warns Sienna X spray tan guru James Harknett. “The results look great but the lotion is often colourless, so be wary of those without a guide colour - take time and make sure you cover everywhere.”
Tried & tested
If your self-tan lotion looks too dark, Harknett recommends mixing with a moisturiser to ease yourself into spring, and always use a tanning mitt for an even application. Dry body mists are another speedy way to achieve a spring glow. Moisturise first - avoiding anything too oily or thick - and then spray evenly. njoying good health now and in the future comes from good habits and food choices. Therefore, healthy eating for kids is essential. Children who are trained to eat healthy foods at an early age are more likely to choose healthy food for a lifetime. As parents we provide the role model for our children. Therefore, if we want our children to develop healthy eating habits we need to start with ourselves. If both parents enjoy eating nutritious foods, the chances are that their children will copy their

good food habits. Educating ourselves regarding good nutrition is a major part of good parenting. We can help children to have more control over their own health and to lead healthier, happier and more productive lives. They need to know about the effects that food has on their health, they need to know that they have the power to make wise choices and that they can contribute to the prevention of disease. Creating a nutritional home is the first step to ensure the wellbeing of children. Kids will eventually see that
consistent daily food choices mean healthy bodies and a happy life. As children grow up they will develop an attitude of wellbeing. Children seem to be the target group for the promotion of junk foods. Processed foods, promoted to children via TV advertising, offer free toys or use cartoon characters to ensure kids pester their parents to buy these foods and food companies continually use these tactics to promote sales of their products. These processed foods include baked foods, snacks, chocolate, burgers, pizzas,

cookies and carbonated drinks. Processed foods contain high levels of saturated fat, refined flour, sugar and salt which contribute to an unhealthy diet and are detrimental to a child’s health. Modern foods are produced with artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals. Filling up on processed and overcooked foods that provide little nutritional benefits can lead to discomfort, depression and ultimately diseases that affect our society today. Processed foods and chemical additives have upset our entire chemistry, resulting in health complications, food intolerances, sensitivities and allergies, for example: Saturated fat: obesity; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; fatigue; learning disturbances Salt: high blood pressure; water retention; kidney stones
Refined flour: immune deficiency; low energy; chronic fatigue; parasites Artificial flavourings and colourings: allergies; skin reactions; eczema; asthma Sugar and sweeteners: dental cavities; diabetes; hyperactivity; mood swings; tantrums; aggression When we begin to realise
the health risks associated with these processed foods and food additives we start to eliminate them and opt for more wholesome alternatives that taste delicious and do not put our health at risk. Body and brain functions are influenced by a wide range of nutrients. For good health and optimum mind power a child needs a variety of foods. The body needs carbohydrates, protein and fat, as well as vitamins, minerals, enzymes and water. Nature has given us a wide variety of plant foods that are rich in nutritional content. Unprocessed food is the key to health and longevity.

TOP TIPS TO INSPIRE YOUR CHILDREN TO BECOME HEALTHIER ✱ Take kids shopping and let them select nutritious foods. ✱ Let your children help out in the kitchen and let them wash fruits and vegetables. ✱ Use simple recipes and allow them to follow instructions alongside you. Encourage children to make simple fruit and vegetable dishes (for example: raw vegetable sticks, fruit kebabs, fruit salads, healthy dips, juices, dairy-free milkshakes and desserts). ✱ Demonstrate the positive value of antioxidants in fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds and nuts and how they contribute to good health — energy boosters and mood elevators. ✱ Introduce new food every week; have taste-test samples. ✱ Discuss with them how you are going to eliminate junk foods and substitute with nutritious dishes. ✱ Praise your children for their contribution — children will learn to develop confidence in their abilities. ✱ Raising healthy children does not need to be time-consuming. Daily smoothies and juices are a fantastic source of nutrients when you have little time to prepare food. Juicing at home is the key to giving the entire family a radiant and energetic life.

EDUCATION
Independent schools and the world work
“Work”, with its horny-handed connotations, was once a dirty word in public schools. Teachers, like so many dons from Inspector Morse, preached that academe prized high ideals. Youth was golden, and a bright young thing could not serve both God and Mammon. Many pupils graduated to ivory towers but then failed to grasp the “glittering prizes” of the wider world, having received an education that privileged purely academic content over those broader skills essential to success in life, once one has left university.
The nature of work is changing at a staggering speed. Today’s generation face with choices that go far beyond those faced by previous generations. Increasingly, they will have to become familiar and skilled at working with people of different nationalities, much of their lives, they will be working with people virtually. Most will have three careers, rather than one. At its heart, the modern workplace demands vision, creativity, and innovation as well as the lessons gleaned from real experience. The leaders of today and tomorrow will lead groups and communities of people who are more diverse, virtual and global: it is a complex challenge. It’s tough out there. “A lack of Commercial Awareness is the single most common failing in graduates applying for employment (CIHE “What do employers Think and Want?”). The Times Top 100 2 APRIL2012
by Pam Dubowitz Head of Merchant Taylors’ Career Service
Graduate Employers received an average of 45 applications per vacancy in 2011. A mere 23% of final year students from the UK’s top 30 universities expect to start a graduate job after finishing their degrees. (UK Graduate Careers Survey 2011). And for schools, most significantly, a record 36% of this year’s graduate jobs at the leading employers will go to applicants who have already had work experience with the organisation. (The Graduate market in 2012). Finding work that excites and inspires your son or daughter will be one of the keys to the good life you wish for them. In order to do this they will have to discover skill and personal competences that they can master deeply. There are literally thousands of different types of jobs. Most studies suggest that about 40% of graduate jobs are open to graduates of any discipline. Employability skills is the buzzphrase used frequently by employers and education professionals. The term sounds rather grey. But the skills themselves are those “soft skills” that so often make the difference between success and failure in a career: the ability to lead effectively, to communicate well, to radiate enthusiasm and commitment, work productively as part of a team,
solve problems creatively and think outside the box; and integrate an awareness of the commercial dimension into any project. Independent schools have responded to this shift. Their Careers Services work increasingly closely with employers and universities to understand what the UK’s top employers are looking for in school leavers and graduates. They aim to provide clear, accurate and up-todate information on the graduate job market and the employment prospects for today’s students, so as to advise their Sixth Formers on the universities and degree courses that are most likely to lead to a successful graduate job in the future. Most Independent schools offer excellent programmes ensuring the development of key employment skills, personal attributes and wider experience as part of the school curriculum. At Merchant Taylors’, for example, every term the Career Service runs a variety of Employer and University Led Skills sessions, which include: making an impact at interview; making effective applications; improving your CV; developing key attributes in leadership, communication and
teamwork; psychometric testing; Careers Conventions and Higher Education Conventions. Our mock interview programme for students is sector specific, involving employers, the universities and our alumni in conducting competencybased interviews, whether the field is Law, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Finance, Dentistry, or the traditional Socratic interviews of Oxford and Cambridge.
Students undertake high quality work experience to improve their skills, commercial awareness and marketability. In most independent schools, and certainly at MTS, alumni are a rich source of information and advice about the realities of a particular occupation, career paths, recommended further study and the value or otherwise of gap year activities. Such networking provides current students with hard-won personal insights into an organisation or occupation, as well as creating valuable opportunities for future networking in their own lives. If students have done all of the above by the time they leave school, they will be better prepared than many final year university students suddenly faced with the conundrum of what to do with their lives. They will be well on their way to being able to respond to the ever-changing demands of the employment market and look forward with confidence to a prosperous and happy future.

Achievements On and Off the Stage The children at Westbrook Hay have had an exceptionally busy and successful term, not only have the Upper School children performed a spectacular production of Alice in Wonderland but some have also sat their entrance tests to their secondary schools. More than 50 children were involved in this very entertaining production and as things became “curiouser and curiouser” the audience was continually amused
and intrigued by all the baffling characters encountered. To mention a few: Dodo and Lorikeet; the aloof and magical Caterpillar; the acrobatics of Father William; the frantic white fluff of the very endearing White Rabbit; a beautiful array of talking flowers and the accompanying rattle of teacups, from the brilliant Mad Hatter and friends around the table for tea. As ever, the Upper School proceedings were rather more ‘West End’ than Westbrook.

Patrick Atkinson, Headmaster of Beechwood Park, the co-educational day and weekly boarding preparatory school located in Markyate, near St Albans, was invited to address the visitors at an exhibition for parents considering an independent education for their children. As it is not possible to wave a magic wand to make this decision easy, his talk was designed to take some of the stress out of the process. Praised for its good sense and wise advice, his address merits wider circulation. Well-qualified to advise, Patrick Atkinson, has been a Headmaster for 20 years; this includes a boys’ day preparatory school and then Beechwood Park, which also offers a nearby Montessori Nursery. His teaching career started at the highly regarded Sevenoaks School which pioneered the introduction of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and where he was responsible for establishing the IB biology course. He has two children of his own (now in their twenties) and as a family, over the years they have chosen single sex, co-ed, day and boarding, 11+entry and 13+ entry – which covers almost the whole gamut of possibilities!
Here are some of the questions he covered. Can I afford the fees? Many parents pay fees out of income; this is fine until you are made redundant or some other disaster strikes. Fees planning is essential, even if this only means having substantial savings. Alternatively, grandparents or other relatives may be helping out or prepared to act as a back-stop. If the money isn’t available to pay the fees required by the sort of school you want your child to go to, investigate also any bursaries and/or scholarships for the particularly talented. These days most independent schools offer means-tested bursaries, so it’s always worth asking. It’s worth noting too that 30% of the independent school pupil population receive some level of fee support. What sort of school do I want my child to attend? Parents may have some definite ideas already, based on your own experiences or hearsay from family and friends. You may have concluded that Boarding is not on the agenda. Or perhaps you think, mistakenly I would say, that children learn better in single sex schools. They may obtain better exam results, but these schools are more selective, so that’s what you’d expect. On the other hand, you may have no pre-conceived ideas. Whichever of these applies, make sure you go and see a wide variety of schools. And always, if you have a strong preference for one type over another, visit the type of school that you think you don’t like the sound of ….you just never know! If you have never been inside a boarding school, be sure to go and see at least one; I am sure you will be amazed. There are many that are easily accessible from London. What sort of school would suit my child? If your child is already at a school, ask the teachers – take advice from someone who already knows your child, who understands the way that he or she works, the things they like to do and their talents or gifts. These teachers should have a good idea of what your child already has in place that their next school needs to develop and build on. If your child is very 8 APRIL2012
relationships at the school are like? Good relationships are very important. How do the children get on with their teachers? Do the teachers and families work as a team? Are the staff relationships with one another professional and cordial and good role-models for your child? Do the children learn from one another – not just the teachers? Are the children encouraged to value effort, share ambition and aspiration and excellence in one another? We’ll all go the extra mile in the company of a marathon runner! Ask the children about the ethos and aims of the school. Ask the Head teacher the same questions and see whether they agree. Is the school achieving what it sets out to achieve? Does the school have the same values as you? If a school believes that ‘School Comes First’ does that coincide with what you think, or do you consider that school has to take second place to commitments outside school? Don’t hold back – these are all vital questions to think about.
Which School? The Questions You Need To Ask About The Schools And Of Yourselves
FROM A PRESENTATION GIVEN BY PATRICK ATKINSON, HEADMASTER, BEECHWOOD PARK SCHOOL
young - still a little seed of undeveloped potential, then look for a school with a broad range of opportunities so that your son or daughter has the chance to find out what it is that they enjoy doing and where their talents may lie. Schools that have an extensive activity programme and a broad and balanced curriculum that covers more than simply the 3Rs is the best choice when your child is starting school. Remember also that young children need space to run around and explore; so much of their learning is done that way when they are little so avoid schools that haven’t taken this into account in their provision. Sadly, not all schools are blessed with extensive grounds like Beechwood Park, but has the school found a way to overcome this, so that the children are not confined all day?
How much importance should I attach to a school’s position in the league tables? League table position is interesting information and perhaps useful if you are comparing schools that are pretty alike, for example, Single Sex Highly Selective Day Schools. League Tables should not be the only reason for choosing one school over another. The important thing is the quality of teaching and learning and the League Tables don’t tell you that. How do I assess the quality of teaching and learning? When you are finding out about a school,
in conversations with the teachers, the pupils, people you know who already have children there, try to ascertain how well a child with similar abilities, interests and learning styles does at that school. For instance, if children of average ability excel at something and get into good quality universities, then the quality of teaching and learning is pretty high.
What is it like being a pupil at this school? This is probably the most important question of all. And the way to find out is to talk to people, look at the website, read reviews….. but most importantly, visit the school and talk to the pupils themselves and their teachers. Visit more than once if possible, an Open Day is good, but also try to get a personal meeting with the Head teacher or at least a senior teacher on a normal school day. Find out what the experience is like for the children. How? Ask them directly! Are they happy? What do they think are the school’s qualities? Do they like coming to school? Do children try to arrive as early as possible? Why? What’s the best thing about school? The usual answer in my school is “because of break times” or “Breakfast Club”! If a friend tells you that their child is standing by the car every morning, raring to go, in uniform with bag packed, then that’s an excellent recommendation. Are they proud of their school? What are their aims and aspirations? Ask what the
How important are facilities? Don’t be dazzled by fantastic facilities. On their own they don’t produce equally fantastic teaching and learning. Inspirational teaching, transformational teaching is determined by human resources not bricks and mortar. Yes, teachers need good resources to work with, but actually fantastic teaching can take place in a Nissen hut. The important question to ask is how does the school invest in its most important of human resources, the teachers? Do they attract the best? Do they invest in on-going teacher training, do they seek out professionals who can inspire the youngsters with their talent and light the fire that burns within the child? Your child may well be dazzled by a marvellous sports hall or state-of-the-art IT suite. Don’t be over-influenced by these material things – actually it’s the quality of the teachers and the relationships that are important. Of course, the school needs to have the facilities to deliver the curriculum and activities that it offers otherwise it won’t get past first base; so ensure that they match up. What is life going to be like if my child goes to this school? Think about the impact on the family. Be practical! If you opt for a day school make sure the journey is manageable for you and your child. Don’t take on a commitment that is going to cause so much stress that the value of a first class education is undone by mental strain. How will it fit into your work pattern as a family? If both parents work – do you require all-round day care? Is this offered by the school? What happens in the holidays? Does the school offer holiday activity courses for those families with two working parents? Does the school’s location mean that the social life can continue during the holidays? If a day school is miles away, chances are friends will be too, and you’ll struggle to meet up in the holidays or end up driving miles. If your child is going to board, endeavour to maintain friendships in the area local to home so that it is easier to socialise in the holidays. Do we instinctively feel this is the right school? What is your gut feeling? Are the Head teacher and staff welcoming? Do they share your values? Do they show genuine interest in my child? And finally, make sure you know about the procedure and time deadlines for applying to your school of choice.

Lockers Park is a small, happy day and boarding school for boys, set in 23 acres of parkland in Hertfordshire, just above Hemel Hempstead. We are proud to be a school exclusively for boys and whether in lessons, on the playing fields or in free time, their particular needs are catered for. We have been educating boys since 1874 and blend modern facilities and teaching methods
with traditional values and well-loved customs. Whilst day boys enjoy all the facilities and opportunities of a boarding school, modern boarding is enormous fun for our full boarders. Our average class size is 14 and the pupil: teacher ratio a healthy 1:8. The school is proud of its academic record. Each year, our leavers go on to their chosen senior school – both
boarding and day - with many gaining scholarships in a range of disciplines from academic to art, sport and music.
Lockers Park offers a real family atmosphere, where boys are stimulated and happy. Being a small school, we are able to ensure that every boy can thrive as an individual. Our pupils enjoy spending time with friends, working hard and building the self-
confidence and independence that they will need for their future lives. We believe that success follows success and develops naturally in boys who are motivated and given every encouragement to push themselves, knowing they will always be supported. All this is all embodied in our school motto; Bene agere ac Laetari – good results, good manners, good fun.

The weather was amazing the hottest day of the year! With sun shining and a small breeze, everyone was able to participate in this light-hearted outdoor activity for a worthy cause.
younger girls leapfrogged, crawled and walked backwards. The staff including Mrs Ashton, Mrs Wilding, Miss Griffiths and Miss Humpage decided to actually run the mile. Members of our brass band even played their instruments as a musical accompaniment to the event. Those who didn't participate supported and donated generously. The accounting shows we have raised nearly £10,000.00 and we are all really thrilled to be able to make this donation for such a worthwhile event. The girls had to complete two laps of the sports field, with many staff also taking part to raise money. Deputy Head, Mr JamesRobbins, joined his Sixth Form English group as Frankenstein, whilst Mrs Pearson and Mrs Davies accompanied their History groups as female suffragettes. Their chanting of 'votes of women!' and 'down with Asquith!' motivated everyone to complete the two laps. As well as the conventional running or walking, Danielle Tang and Laura Mullin in the U6 chose to cartwheel, whilst some of the
Habs is Exceptional! Following a detailed assessment by the ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate), Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School has recently been judged to be excellent in virtually every aspect of its relationship with its pupils and its community. The school knew that it offered an outstanding educational environment. After all, it has achieved 40% or more A* grades at A level in each of the years that this new distinction has been awarded. However, it was exciting to read the ISI’s conclusion that the school provided an ‘outstanding educational experience’ which allowed its pupils to perform to ‘the highest level of their ability’. Particular attention was drawn to the high quality of the teaching that enabled such spectacular results. More importantly, perhaps, was the praise which the ISI focused on the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of Habs boys. The high standard of pastoral care provided at Habs was particularly noted, which the inspectors claimed played a powerful role in creating what they described as a ‘friendly and supportive school community.’ Furthermore, added the ISI conclusions, this sense of community extended to the parents, judging by the responses received to the parental questionnaire which the ISI undertook.
‘I always knew that I and my team of outstanding staff were focused on building a first-rate educational environment,’ noted Headmaster Peter B Hamilton, ‘yet even I would not have dared to expect such an outstanding ISI report. I pay tribute,’ he continued, ‘to the support and direction provided by our entire community of pupils, staff, parents and old boys. Working together,’ he concluded, ‘we have built a school whose pupils go on to lead happy, purposeful, and successful lives. What better start can a school provide to any child?’ Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, Butterfly Lane, Elstree, Hertfordshire WD6 3AF T: 020 8266 1700 www.habsboys.org.uk

Making the right choice of school for your child is a daunting prospect. With so many excellent independent secondary schools around, all displaying an impressive pedigree with respect to exam results and university entrance, and all having dazzling statistics in the sports, music and dramatic arenas, it is difficult to get beyond the hype and really select the school that will be right for, and benefit your child in terms of academic fulfilment and personal development. The right school will share the values and aspirations that you have for your child.

THE OLYMPIC RANGE
A NEW BREED OF INDOOR POOL FROM ORIGIN Origin has been in the indoor and outdoor swimming pool business for over thirty years. In that time they have built literally thousands of pool installations - most of which are still in daily use today. Along the way the company has listened to, and in many cases benefited from, ideas and styles that their customers have suggested and the new Olympic range has included many of these suggestions. In fact it is not an exaggeration to say that their wide network of customers has helped to make this the benchmark Origin design collection. More pool space and greater consideration of internal layout. Extra ideas that their customers find important - such as more daylight, better changing facilities, and importantly, more room for gym equipment. Another subject they mentioned was cost! So the company has brought these state of the art packages in at some record-breaking prices. And to help out even further, the Chancellor didn't alter the VAT rate but they

did! For a limited time Origin are prepared to pay half the VAT on all the Olympic pool buildings. Typically this could mean a saving of up to £20,000. But how has Origin managed to produce what is probably their most advanced range at such competitive rates? rough the use of cutting edge technology and the finest new materials they can offer some very exciting advances to today's pool buyer. For example, fully temperature controlled pool and surroundings. An exterior finish engineered timber construction. A wide choice of exterior and interior finishes and colours, so the Olympic pool house will match in with the colour, texture and surroundings of your home. To complete this comprehensive package, Origin has commissioned ten big canvas prints in a wide range of subjects (from flowers, to palm trees to penguins!) to complete the picture. e company will offer you any two of these with their compliments. Artwork can really maximise the interior
look, and these big bold subjects will forever be talking points to all your guest swimmers. e Olympic range features four models - the Arena, the Marathon, the Challenger and the top of the range Olympiad. e Arena is a compact well appointed design, with all the features of its bigger counterparts apart from the Origin trademark roof lantern design. e pool size is a generous 5.7 x 2.75 metres, and has a powerful swim jet to really try your stamina. e other models even include gym equipment recommended by Origin - and the whole range boasts shower facilities and sliding patio doors. If you chose the mid-range Marathon the standard price for the complete package would be £189,000. Take off half the VAT as long as this offer lasts, and you would pay £173,250 - a saving of £15,750. * A great incentive for you to be first in the Olympic race.
ABOUT ORIGIN Origin is Britain’s biggest indoor pool company. From small beginnings in the 1970s the company has grown, and its product ranges become more sophisticated, ever since. e directors and their team of key people are largely the same, some of the team being able to boast over twenty five years of service. And of course the expertise has grown to new heights, resulting in the superb architect designed buildings of today. Origin are responsible for every element of the process from early scribbled designs that include many of the customers' thoughts, through the architectural design, planning, ground works and construction. All is within the remit of this privately owned British company - from the first sketch to the last lick of paint, controlled and overseen by the Origin team. And that's a promise.
Origin is proud to sponsor Olympic swimmer Fran Halsall. Her constant and remarkable progress includes world records, and qualifying for the Olympics fastest in the world in 50m and 100m freestyle events this year. Apparently she wishes she had an Origin pool house!

With the imminent arrival of baby Billy to their growing family, Beks and Jolyon Nott had just the incentive they needed to put their extension plans into action. But they had to work fast.
A F A M I LY PROJECT W hen the Notts moved to their two bedroom house in Teddington it was the perfect antidote to their previously hectic Wandsworth lifestyle. “We really liked the village feel of Teddington and its proximity to Bushy Park, the river and Kingston.” Beks recalls. A year passed quickly however and with a young child and finding herself pregnant for the second time, it wasn’t long before they needed even more space. “We considered moving but the costs involved would mean we had to move out of an area we loved.” Other houses in the street had converted their unused loft space so they knew it was possible. “My husband (a designer) set about drawing up our own plans” Beks comments. “We wanted to maximise space by fitting in two bedrooms and a shower room.” After getting quotes from local builders, the Notts chose L&E (Lofts and Extensions) to realise their vision. “We invited L&E round after seeing a case study in our local magazine” Beks remembers. They were surprised to find L&E offered the best value of all the builders “Even on first meeting, we really trusted them. The payment plan was very clear with no pressure to pay each stage until we were completely happy. The surveyor and foreman just seemed like our sort of people. It’s also nice to support local business as that’s part of the appeal in a place with such a sense of community.” With just over 10 weeks to go until Beks’ due date, L&E began the build. Within six days they had the shell up and the property watertight. “Progress was so rapid; we couldn’t quite believe it ourselves.” With so many builders about and living on a terraced street, Beks was concerned about the disruption to neighbours. “I needn’t have worried. Our neighbours even commented on how tidy and how polite the whole team were. They took great pride in their work and were respectful of the fact we were still living in the house.” Work progressed quickly, with the main part of the build

being completed in just less than 4 weeks. With Jolyon at work and Beks heavily pregnant they were able to rely on their foreman to project manage the build. “My husband is used to dealing with contractors but we didn’t need too much involvement as our foreman was in control and when the need arose was always available to discuss any issues.” The team completed the project in the nick of time. “They told us the job would take 9 to 10 weeks and they cleared everything out on the 10th week exactly on schedule.” Billy arrived four days later and was able to move straight into his newly created bedroom. “That wasn’t the last we saw of them however,” Beks recalls “as they brought round a bottle of champagne, a card from the team and their congratulations soon after we arrived home!” With the conversion complete, they now have both the bedroom and bathroom space they longed for. “We are thrilled. The final result means that we can stay in this house which we love, at a fraction of the cost of moving home. We have doubled our upstairs space meaning that we can have people to stay while at the same time giving the children their very own rooms. That alone makes a big difference.” Mr and Mrs Nott are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Michael’s Folly
AN ALTERNATIVE OPEN GARDEN FOR THE NGS If the mention of an NGS Open Garden produces a picture in your mind of the vast parklands surrounding a country estate or the formal beds, borders and lawns hiding behind a townhouse, then Michael’s Folly may be just the garden to challenge, and maybe change, your expectations.
Situated on a small side road in the picturesque village of Epping Green between Hatfield and Hertford, Michael’s Folly is a naturalistic woodland environment overlooking meadows and farmland and created by two generations of the Trevicchia family. Purchased by Fabrizia’s parents in the 1960s it started out life simply as a house in a small bare field. Over the years, the family have developed an atmospheric and peaceful garden that both complements and reflects the surrounding countryside. Their philosophy of environmental sustainability can be clearly seen throughout the garden, in the structures they have created, the materials they have used and the methods they have employed.
In the centre of the whole site is the productive kitchen garden, where flowers and food grow side by side through the seasons. Red chard, artichoke and cabbages flourish happily next to borage, poppies and marigolds, which are allowed to self-seed between the plots. Hops and roses climb artfully over arches, filling the garden with height and colour. The spring sees the blossoming of fruits such as raspberries, tayberries, strawberries and gooseberries and by autumn the little orchard of apple, pear and persimmon is ready for harvest.
A small paddock beyond the studio is home to two goats the colour of butterscotch. A mother and daughter pair, the younger goat provides Fabrizia with a regular supply of milk and the vegetable garden also benefits from the fertilising effect of their manure. The highlight of this garden in April is the sweep of bluebells in the woodland. Emerging from any available space, they carpet the floor and line the paths leading to the newly created pool. Its sloping banks lined with Tree planting on the site of British native species such as hazel, sycamore, primroses, wood anemones and violets, this is the perfect place to pause a hawthorn and hornbeam created a small wooded area where narrow paths while and enjoy the dappled sun playing through the canopy overhead.
