Captain’s Charity Pro-Am Digital Appeal for Disabled Children This year, Scope patron and Brocket Hall Golf Club Captain Richard Bradbury CBE, will be hosting the 2013 Pro-Am to support Scope’s Meldreth Manor School and Orchard Manor Transition Service Digital Technology Appeal for disabled children and young people.
T
he 2013 Brocket Hall Golf Club Pro-Am will take place on Monday 23rd September on the prestigious Palmerston course, one of the finest and most beautiful courses in the country. Joining the event will be European Tour golfer Simon Khan along with a host of professional golfers for members to meet and play with.
Meldreth Manor School, situated on the Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire border in the village of Meldreth, is one of Scope’s three schools supporting disabled children and young people with complex needs. The school combines a range of education, social activities and residential care for pupils who come to learn, live and get the most out of life. Despite the complexity of their medical needs, the ambition and the potential of the pupils should not be in doubt. The children and young people are full of life, fun loving and eager to learn. As well as the school, the Meldreth Manor site is h ome to Scope’s Orchard Manor Transition Service, which supports disabled people aged 18 - 26 to enhance their social and independent living skills in preparation for adult life. Technology such as phones, tablets, laptops and home computers has, over the years, changed our lives, but for a disabled person with complex needs the impact can be much greater. Items like these are portable, affordable and don’t carry the stigma of bulky, specialist devices. Furthermore, tablets are a mass-market affordable technology and when paired with the low price of apps and software these items have the potential to significantly enhance the lives of disabled people for a portion of the usual cost. Historically, specialist technology for individuals with complex needs has been very expensive and hard to update. However, mainstream devices are increasingly becoming more accessible and affordable with the capacity to be used by disabled people for a range of everyday purposes – including as

a voice output communication aid, as a means for accessing the curriculum and as a route to socialising and networking with friends. Brocket Hall Golf Club’s Pro-Am aims to raise over £50,000 for Meldreth Manor and Orchard Manor. This funding will be used to purchase essential technology for Scope’s students and to upgrade the IT infrastructure at the school site to ensure it can embrace and enable this technology to be accessible and reach its full capacity. Jamie, a student at Meldreth Manor School, has no verbal speech; he communicates through gesture and body language. In the past, telephone calls to his mum and dad have left Jamie really frustrated, anxious and upset as he struggled to be understood. However, now Jamie uses apps like Face Time and photo sharing tools on his iPad to share his day with the people who are important to him. Jamie’s mum explains ‘using a phone meant that communication with Jamie was limited as we could only hear him make the noise for ‘yes’ – but so much of Jamie’s communication is through beaming smiles and his body language. It is a big thing being able to see Jamie via the iPad and know that he is happy’. The Brocket Hall Digital Appeal wants more students like Jamie to have the chance to access technology that gives them the opportunity to socialise with friends, stay in touch with the people most important to them, make day-to-day choices and share experiences whenever and wherever they like. he Club is owned by an Anglo-Dutch quartet comprising Chairman, Graham Wildish, Managing Director, Scott Evans along with Bert Pronk and André Hendriks and they have spared nothing in their desire to create a private members’ Club of unrivalled quality.
The Club’s 7,084-yard par-72 course is jointly designed by Scott Evans and Simon Gidman, a past president of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects. They have succeeded in crafting a modern masterpiece which is destined for a place near the top of the GB & I course ratings. There are a number of things which standout at The Centurion Club and the first is the majestic piece of land the course is built on. It is both picturesque and undulating and the mounds that separate many of the holes will make marvellous vantage points if ever the owners decide to host a top Tour event. The A1 creeping bent grass greens are already in immaculate condition and are sufficiently contoured to make pitching and putting challenging without becoming a chore. It is a course which provides options for the thinking man’s golfer and also enables a player to use every club in the bag. Most courses have a single signature hole but The Centurion Club is spoilt for choice in that department. It opens and closes with spectacular par-5s and in between there is as diverse and inviting a collection of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s as can be found anywhere in the country. The course at Centurion Club can be stretched to over 7,000-yards from the CENTURION CLUB 6th HOLE
back tees but with five sets of tees it is eminently playable for all standards which is something Gidman is keen to ensure at all the courses he builds. “Our courses are designed to be enjoyed by all golfers and not just by players who can hit the ball 240-yards through the air,” he said. “We want golfers of all abilities to enjoy the experience which is why we have worked hard to provide a variety of different strategic options. “There are many grand holes at The Centurion Club,” he added. “My own favourite might well be the long par-4 6th but it is interesting to note different people often tell you they have a different favourite hole. “The 18th is probably the most spectacular but I’d like to think it’s the sort of course where you’re likely to remember most holes long after you’ve played.” A flexible and varied design is the key to the success of the golf course in Evans opinion. “We have looked to build a course that is fun for golfers of all abilities, but also one that is a good test for the top players from the back tees. The feedback we have received so far suggests that we have achieved that and as it matures over the next few years it’s only going to get better.” Centurion Club is currently offering guided tours for prospective members. There are three categories of membership available: Senate, Centurion and Corporate. Further information about membership is available from Richard Corbett on 01442 510520. CENTURION CLUB 8th HOLE

Last Night of the Proms
M
SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 2013- ROYAL ALBERT HALL, SW7
arin Alsop will make history at the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall when she becomes the first woman to conduct the world famous final night of The Proms. Alsop conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra through a programme of both traditional and new music, threading together the many exciting themes of the 2013 Proms.
Park, alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra and conductor... An array of acclaimed artists, including, will also take part (more artists will be announced in due course). The Hyde Park event is broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. Highlights of the Last Night celebrations around the country will be included as part of the live coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Radio 3, while digital TV viewers can choose to watch the Royal Albert Hall.
Stars of the classical world, Nigel Kennedy and Joyce DiDonato take to the stage to perform a wide range of popular pieces including Over the Rainbow, Danny Boy, and Williams’ Lark Ascending. Described by conductor Jiri Belohlavek as “the world’s largest and most democratic musical festival”, the much-loved classical celebration now encompasses more than 100 concerts each year.
Fancy dress is an optional extra: from dinner jackets to patriotic T-shirts. Many use the occasion for an exuberant display of Britishness. Union Flags are carried and waved by the Prommers, especially during Rule, Britannia!”. Flags, balloons and party poppers are all welcomed though John Drummond famously discouraged this ‘extraneous noise’ during his tenure as Director of the Proms. Sir Henry Wood’s bust is adorned with a laurel chaplet by representatives of the Promenaders, who often wipe an imaginary bead of sweat from his forehead or make some similar gentle visual joke.
Opening with the world premiere of Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, the Last Night programme includes music by some of the season’s Anniversary composers, including Wagner and Britten, as well as featured composers Williams and Bantock, before closing with the traditional Last Night pieces. The Last Night of the Proms celebrations spill out of the Royal Albert Hall into all four nations of the UK. Each BBC Proms in the Park event has its own popular line-up of artists and presenters, and culminates in a live link-up with the Royal Albert Hall for the second half of the concert, transmitted on BBC One. Nigel Kennedy and Joseph Calleja, both of whom will have featured earlier on in the festival, will perform at BBC Proms in the Park, Hyde 10 AUGUST2013
The Royal Albert Hall could be filled many times over with people wishing to attend the Last Night. Tickets are almost as hard to come by as Centre Court passes for the Wimbledon finals, but the whole thing is broadcast live on the BBC - and all round the world. eople spend too much time worrying about other people that they do not concentrate on what they want from their wedding day. Opting for a small wedding not only saves on your budget but gives you the opportunity to not have to tell people they are not invited without feeling bad. You can dance the night away with friends and family you feel comfortable with rather than spend the day catching up with acquaintances and most importantly you can soak up being a newlywed with your new spouse. One of the biggest wedding decisions you need to make is picking the venue, so why choose a bigger venue just to accommodate more guests when you can go for the first option you instantly fell in love with. Hanbury Manor, a Marriott Hotel & Country Club in Ware, Hertfordshire offers Intimate wedding packages with smaller room options including the Drawing Room and Conservatory that can be opened to join into each other if you wish you utilise the two rooms through the day or the period library setting with all options overlooking the 200 acres of stunning parkland. Bringing Back Brooches
W
hen you think of brooches, what immediately springs to mind? Maybe it is something pinned to a lapel, both jacket and jewel a little old fashioned, or the realisation that you never see the Queen without one. For some reason brooches occupy a very traditional place within the jewellery family, rather like a rather severe aunt. It doesn’t have to be this way. A quick trip over to Paris will reveal a whole new range of possibilities for that beautiful but boring brooch. Maybe it is their joie de vivre or the inspiration of the jewellery ‘Grande Maisons’ at the city’s heart but an observant eye will quickly see that Parisians really do enjoy their jewellery and whether worth the earth, or fabulous paste, it is worn with flair and creativity. The trick is not to see these jewels as over-sized lapel pins, but as self-adhesive go-anywhere pieces of glamour. Only the form of the brooch itself should dictate its most advantageous position. Symmetrical pieces tend to work best on the centre line, but this could be at the top of a blouse or shirt, on the waistband of trousers or skirts as an elaborate buckle or an accent at the point of a V on a dress – either at the front or back. Of course the moment a rule is suggested, the thing to do is to break it. Symmetrical brooches can
be used as a variation on a bow and so could be used in similar positions such as a on a hat band, or in the hair. I have even seen them worn on the hip of a pair of jeans. Asymmetrical brooches can be worn almost anywhere. If pinning the brooch to a piece of clothing seems tame, run a chain through the pin and you have a necklace. Attach it to a length of ribbon and you have a fabulous choker, or a shorter ribbon could be a bracelet. The only limit is your imagination. Worn on a scarf, a brooch can be a decoration for the neck but a particularly French habit seems to be to tie the scarf to a suitably gorgeous handbag, or even pin directly to the bag if you dare. If your brooch has sufficiently curved pins you could even thread them through a thin finger ring to create a show stopping party piece. A note of caution: the value of a brooch may advise a limit to its position and the situation it is worn in. A strong gust of wind might lead to a family heirloom, attached to a hat, sailing off down the river so temper your creativity with common sense. Check the pins carefully and make sure that any safety clasps are working correctly. If you are wearing a brooch with precious gems, inspect the settings to ensure that there are no loose stones. To avoid pain and injury, test where the brooch will sit so that a movement or gesture later does not lead to a serious stab wound. With a little resourcefulness, a brooch can be the most versatile piece of jewellery so dig out yours and start wearing them, and if you don’t have one, visit the Fellows website for an ever-changing selection. His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge T Born George Alexander Louis on 22nd July 2013 at 4.24pm - 8lbs 6oz
he Duchess of Cambridge, formally Kate Middleton, gave birth to the couple’s first child, a son, in the hospital’s private Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, London... where Princess Diana gave birth to William in 1982 and Harry in 1984. The baby is third in the line of Succession after His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge. He is styled His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. The baby moves ahead of Prince Harry, who’s now fourth in line. The birth was announced via a formal press release issued by Kensington Palace, which stated that the duchess “was safely delivered of a son” at 4:24 p.m., local time, weighing 8lbs 6oz. News of the royal birth - which came after an 11 hour labour - was not made public by Kensington Palace until 8.29pm, four hours
28 AUGUST2013
after the baby was born. Sources said the couple ‘just wanted to spend a little time together to bond as a family’ and inform members of both families privately before the news was announced to the world. William made those calls personally. A bulletin containing details of the birth was taken by car to Buckingham Palace and placed on an easel at the palace gates for the public to see. The framed sheet of paper became the target of a thousand camera flashes as people thrust their smartphones through the railings. The news was greeted with shrieks of “It’s a boy!” and strains of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” Hundreds of Britons and tourists broke into song and dance outside the palace. Champagne bottles popped and shouts of “Hip! Hip! Hooray!” erupted outside Buckingham Palace as Britain welcomed the birth of Prince William and his wife
F E AT U R E
Kate’s first child, a boy who is now third in line to the British throne. Outside the hospital, a man dressed as a town crier in traditional robes and an extravagant feathered hat shouted the news and rang a bell. London’s landmarks, including the London Eye, lit up in the national colours of red, white and blue, and the city had a party atmosphere unmatched since last summer’s Olympics. Right across the country and indeed right across the Commonwealth people celebrated and wished the royal couple well. Prime Minister David Cameron told waiting reporters in front of 10 Downing Street. “It is an important moment in the life of our nation but I suppose above all it’s a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy. It’s been a remarkable few years for our royal family -- a royal wedding that captured people’s hearts, that extraordinary and magnificent Jubilee and now this royal birth, all from a family that have given this nation so much incredible service, and they can know that a proud nation is celebrating with a very proud and happy couple.”
Before mounting the St Mary’s Hospital steps, the smiling Prince of Wales asked journalists who have been stood outside for almost three weeks: ‘Have you been there long?’ When he left around 10 minutes later, Charles said the baby was ‘marvellous’ and told journalists: ‘You’ll see in a minute’ Prince Charles spoke of his joy and pride in becoming a grandparent for the first time. “It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” Prince Charles said in a statement. “Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time, and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.” The Queen told guests at a Buckingham Palace reception she was ‘thrilled’ at the birth of her great-grandson. On the eve of the baby’s birth, the Queen famously told a ten-year-old schoolgirl that she didn’t mind if it was a boy or a girl, adding: ‘I would very much like it to arrive. I’m going on holiday’.
The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth after he and his wife were brought by car from Kensington Palace to St. Mary’s Hospital in London before 6am in the early stages of labour. William joked his new son ‘has a good pair of lungs’ and tells the crowd his child has Kate’s looks and more hair than him. The medical staff present were Mr Marcus Setchell, Surgeon-Gynaecologist, Mr Guy Thorpe-Beeston, Obstetrician and Dr Sunit Godambe, Consultant Neonatologist at St Mary’s Hospital.
Gun salutes sounded across London marked the birth of the royal baby as the armed forces join in the celebrations. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and the Honourable Artillery Company carried out the ceremonial royal salutes in honour of the new addition to the Royal Family. Gun salutes are fired for the birth of every prince or princess, no matter where their place is in the line of succession, the Ministry of Defence said. The last royal salute for a birth was for Princess Eugenie in 1990. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, wearing full dress uniform, paraded past Buckingham Palace to Green Park where they staged a 41-gun royal salute. They went from their forward mounting base in Wellington Barracks into Green Park, where 71 horses pulled six First World War-era 13-pounder field guns into position for the royal salute. Each of the six guns fired blank artillery rounds at 10-second intervals until 41 shots were fired. The horses and riders then collected the guns and escorted them back to Wellington Barracks.
Carole and Michael Middleton were the first visitors to arrive the following day, with Prince Charles and his wife Camilla following them at 5.30pm after being rushed to London by helicopter after two-days carrying out official duties in Yorkshire.
Major Mark Edward, commanding officer of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, said: ‘The opportunity to mark the birth of the child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge by firing a 41-gun royal salute, comes as a huge honour for the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.’
The Archbishop of Canterbury, meanwhile, said he was “delighted to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the arrival of their baby boy”.” Along with millions here and around the world, I share in their joy at this special time,” he added. May God bless this family with love, health and happiness in their shared life ahead”

Whilst a royal gun salute normally comprises 21 guns, this is increased to 41 if fired from a royal park or residence. Uniquely, at the Tower of London, which is a royal residence, 62 rounds are fired as this also includes an additional 21 guns for the citizens of the City of London to show their loyalty to the monarch. As soon as William returned to work following his two weeks’ statutory paternity leave, Kate plans to depart the palace for her parents’ mansion in Berkshire. She will reside there - on and off - for a few weeks, while her husband completes his present tour of duty with the RAF in Anglesey, North Wales. The prince will finish his posting as a Search and Rescue pilot at RAF Valley in early September, relocating to London while waiting for his next assignment, meaning the couple can enjoy some quality time together as a new family. Within weeks, by October at the latest, it is hoped that they will finally be able to move into their new official London residence, Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. Apartment 1A is actually a spacious four-storey, 20room property with its own large south-facing walled garden, which takes up half the Clock Tower wing originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren for King William and Queen Mary. The couple have drafted in a key servant to help them look after Prince George: their housekeeper, Antonella Fresolone, hired as the couple’s “righthand woman” in May, was spotted decamping to Bucklebury, Berkshire, with the new family of three. William, Kate and their son are staying with Michael and Carole Middleton at their £4.7million Georgian Grade II listed mansion while the renovations at their new home at Kensington Palace near completion. Although the couple have so far shunned a large entourage, it seems they could not do without their Italian multitasker, who was poached from Buckingham Palace, where she worked for 13 years as one of the Queen’s three top housemaids. Palace officials confirmed for the first time last night that the couple will not have a nanny and rely upon their families help instead, saying: ‘They have both got families that will care hugely for this baby’ Royal officials say Kate and William will try to give their child as normal an upbringing as possible, a challenging goal in an age when the British royals are treated as major world celebrities. Buckingham Palace held celebratory drinks parties at the end of the one of the most exciting Royal weeks, also held at Windsor Castle and Holyrood Palace, Her Majesty’s official Scottish residence in Edinburgh. The Palace invitation said staff could enjoy a “glass of champagne” to celebrate the “royal birth” in the dining room between 11.30am and 1.30pm. At Windsor Castle they were told to gather in The Undercroft between noon and 2pm 30 AUGUST2013
and staff at Holyrood in the coffee shop and Abbey Strand. One courtier said: “The Queen is on Cloud Nine at the moment and wanted to share her happiness with her hard-working staff, so the obvious thing to do was to get out the champagne” The Queen, 87, is thrilled to have seen her great-grandson, George Alexander Louis, at Kensington Palace, the day after he was born. She then completed her duties before travelling up to Scotland to spend the summer at Balmoral. , Prince Philip has been convalescing at Sandringham following abdominal surgery in June. This means the 92-year-old Duke could not meet his great-grandson until he and the Queen return from Royal Deeside at the beginning of October. The Royal Baby’s title follows the dukedom bestowed on William by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on his wedding day in 2011. Earlier this year, the queen issued a royal decree allowing this royal baby -- and all of William and Kate’s children -- to be titled prince or princess. The decree said “that all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of royal highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honour.” The baby’s gender had been of particular interest because the prospect of Kate’s pregnancy had prompted a change in the laws of succession to ensure that a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother. No one can tell what political and personal changes the intervening years will bring, but the baby can be expected to become the head of state of 16 countries, including Britain, Australia and Canada. The child will also eventually become Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The little prince represents a living link to Britain’s imperial history as the great-greatgreat-great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria, who ruled at the peak of British power. No date has yet been set for when the baby will be christened, but it is likely to be some time in the autumn, when the Royal family return from their summer break at Balmoral. The Duke of Cambridge, for example, was christened six weeks after his birth, in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace, using water drawn from the River Jordan in the Holy Land, in keeping with a tradition dating back to the Crusades. Another royal tradition is for babies to wear a lace and satin christening robe made in 1841 and worn by all of Queen Victoria’s children and every generation of royal babies since, including Prince William.

Why George Alexander Louis? It is a partial victory for the old maxim, “the bookmakers are never wrong”. George was the rock-solid favourite for boys’ names for a while, backed all the way down to 2/1. Alexander and Louis were both not far behind. Of the three names, it is the significance of the third that is most obvious. Louis immediately makes one think of Louis Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip and last viceroy of India, who was killed by the IRA in a bomb attack on his yacht. His father Prince Louis of Battenberg was Prince William’s great-great-grandfather. Louis is also one of William’s middle names. And, of course, the name of 17 kings of France (or 18 or 19, depending how you count). If Louis honours one side of the Royal Family, George clearly resonates with the other.
It was his son George VI whose struggles with his stutter are so movingly depicted in The King’s Speech. Christened Albert and known to his family as Bertie, but crowned as George, he’s a reminder that the monarch has the final say on their regal name.
Despite St George being the patron saint of England, it took the arrival of a German king, George I, to cement the name’s place in England. Long a popular name in Germany, it has Greek roots.
Prince Harry has said he is determined to make sure his nephew has fun in life - and joked about his babysitting fees. The proud uncle was one of the first family members to meet the Royal baby and said: “When I saw him he was crying his eyes out like all babies do I suppose.”
There have since been five other Georges to sit on the throne. George III, king during the loss of the American colonies, is perhaps now best known for his mental illness thanks to Alan Bennett’s play and the subsequent film adaptation. The most recent Georges reigned through two world wars. It was George V who declared war on Germany in 1914, pitting him against his first cousin, Kaiser Wilhelm II. George V recognised the strength of anti-German feeling and changed the Royal Family’s name from the House of SaxeCoburg and Gotha to the more English sounding Windsor.
On the other hand, Alexander has never been the name of a king of England or the UK, but was borne by three kings of Scotland. Prince Harry planning a party for the arrival of his nephew, Prince George. Prince Harry gave his first reaction to becoming an uncle, saying he will keep the newest member of the family out of harm’s way.
The 28-year-old is reportedly organising a party for the royal baby with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s blessing. Prince Harry is already taking his new role of uncle very seriously, reportedly organising a huge party to celebrate the birth of his nephew Prince George. The Prince is putting his reputation as the wildest member of the royal family to good use as he plans to wet the baby’s head and Kate and William have given him their blessing. “”He has had calls made already and William has agreed to it. Kate is fine - it’s tradition.”

Anyone for a Pimms?
The Pimm’s tradition is almost as entrenched in British culture as the cup of tea. All it takes is a prolonged period of good weather, and nothing beats a glass of Pimms on a summer’s day.
P
imm’s is most popular in Britain, particularly. It is one of the two staple drinks at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta and Ascot. A Pimm’s is also the standard cocktail at many polo matches. History of Pimms Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent, invented the thirstquencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cup moniker was born. Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is based on gin and can be served both on ice or in cocktails. It has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit. It is often taken with “English-style” lemonade, as well as various chopped fresh ingredients, particularly apples, cucumber, oranges, lemons, strawberry, and borage, though nowadays most substitute mint. Pimm’s can also be mixed with champagne (or a sparkling white wine), called a “Pimm’s Royal Cup”.
36 AUGUST2013
Pimm’s began large-scale production in 1851 to keep up with sales to other bars. The distillery began selling it commercially in 1859 using hawkers on bicycles. In 1865 Pimm sold the business and the right to use his name to Frederick Sawyer. In 1880 the business was acquired by future Lord Mayor of London, Horatio Davies, and a chain of Pimm’s Oyster Houses was franchised in 1887.
Pimms Recipes
After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups. Pimm’s No. 2 Cup was based on Scotch whisky. Pimm’s No. 3 Cup is based on brandy. Phased out, but a version infused with spices and orange peel marketed as Pimm’s Winter Cup is now seasonally available. Pimm’s No. 4 Cup was based on rum, currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 5 Cup was based on rye whisky, also currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 6 Cup is based on vodka. It is still produced, but in small quantities.
ENGLISH PASSION PIMMS NO.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice and add 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka, flesh and juice of a passion fruit and a dash of sugar syrup. Shake well and strain into a tumbler full of ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and two short straws.
The original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity.
TRADITIONAL PIMMS NO.1 Take one slice of orange, lemon, apple, cucumber per person and one sprig of mint and add to two parts lemonade to one part Pimms. TURBO PIMMS NO.1 As above but five parts lemonade, two parts Pimms, one part gin.
MAXIMUM VOLTAGE PIMMS NO.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice, 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka and 25ml of Cointreau. Shake well and strain into a highball full of ice. Fill with soda water and garnish with mint. If mixing your own Pimms sounds too much like hard work, head to one of the many pubs and bars in London which serve up Pimms with a healthy dose of fruit, ice and garnished with a sprig of mint.

She is the subject and inspiration for this collection, but the importance of the present works is in her collaboration with the internationally renowned artists who created them. As I saw the collection taking shape, I was delighted by the variety and the consistent power of the works, and I have already enjoyed seeing the positive reaction in the faces of others when they first see them. Kate is the ultimate modern muse and we will be seeing her images in major museums and private collections for years to come. She has altered perceptions for women across the globe, encouraging them towards greater individuality and expressive freedom. There is so much you can learn from Kate – how you should always remain true to yourself, develop your own style, and emphasise your individuality”.

Cool as a cucumber
Frizzy hair, shiny faces and bodies perspiring like Andy Murray right before his Wimbledon Championship point... Just some of the everyday beauty blunders afflicting the nation during Britain’s scorching heatwave.
W
ith temperatures soaring, many of us suffered separation anxiety the moment we were parted from air conditioning or industrial fans. Be prepared for the next bout of supreme heat and humidity. If you’re burning up and there’s no outdoor swimming pool in sight, look to the beauty counters and experts for a splash of cooling respite. Put these tips on ice and you’ll be looking fresh as a daisy - no sweat. Face freshen-up Whether it’s a balmy evening or daytime by the pool, an alcohol-free facial mist is just the tonic for stressed, overheated skin. Think of it as a drink for your face. There’s no need to rub or pat in, just enjoy the instant cooling relief and let your complexion absorb the rehydrating vapours. Fighting make-up melt can be tricky, particularly if you’re prone to sweating and your T-zone goes into overdrive. “If you get shiny, especially during hot summer months, try applying a thin layer of mattifying moisturiser on top of your foundation with
46 AUGUST2013
a foundation brush,” advises Witch skincare make-up artist Lisa Valencia. “This will help minimise shine instead of applying extra powder, which can leave the skin looking dry or aged.” Body cooldown Swollen ankles don’t just afflict pregnant women. If you find your lower limbs always tend to expand in the heat or after a dehydrating flight, keep your legs and feet happy with cool-to-the-touch products featuring invigorating ingredients. Extracts of peppermint or cucumber are especially effective for refreshing the skin. “Cool your pulse points by running cold water over your wrists for a minute, which will make you feel instantly cooler,” suggests Rosi Chapman, founder of Transformulas skincare. “Also try storing your body, hand and foot lotions in the fridge for an instant cool fix when required.” If you’re in close proximity to a fridge, employ a bucket of ice instead and chill your potions next to the rose wine. Sun-seekers can beat the heat with the latest in SPF products and aftersun soothers boasting cooling qualities.

Hair Control Tonic Cuticles can have a mind of their own when humidity strikes, turning tresses uber-big (not in a good way) and frizzy. Tame unruly locks with a spritz of anti-humidity spray and always try to work with the natural texture of your hair as much as possible. When temperatures are scorchio, dry shampoo might just be your saviour from damp locks on the daily commute. Leading session stylist Paul Percival says: “If your hair gets a little sweaty from the heat, simply spray a dry shampoo into the roots and shake out - this will leave your hair feeling, and smelling, fresh and clean. “If you have a fringe that gets oily in the heat, spray dry shampoo directly onto a brush and work through the front of your hair to give it a quick touch-up when required.” If the wet look has gone one step too far, embrace it with a firm-hold gel. A perfect holiday style, working slicked-back locks will keep your hair looking modern, controlled and completely free of humidity frizz. Tried & Tested Intensify your tan with a glow-boosting SPF. Our testers trialled three spray varieties in the sunshine: Soltan Protect & Tan Ultra-Light Texture Suncare Spray SPF30, £13.99, currently on sale for £6.99 (Boots) A powerful and fine spray action with a subtle but pleasant fragrance. My tan didn’t appear any deeper than usual but it certainly seemed to last a lot longer. Nivea Sun Protect & Bronze Spray SPF30, £16.99, currently on sale for £8.49 (Boots) This fine spray is quick and easy to apply with a smell that instantly
says ‘summer’. The high protection ensured I didn’t burn in the sun but encouraged a natural-looking tan by the end of my holiday. Piz Buin Tan & Protect Intensifying Sun Spray SPF30, £17.99 (Boots) I loved the consistency and smell of this SPF but the spray action wasn’t particularly effective. But, despite the effort required to apply it, my fair skin didn’t go pink at all and I was rewarded with a deeper glow than usual. Skip the sunburn, banish strap marks and avoid premature ageing this summer with the ultimate shortcut to bronzed, sun-kissed skin - faking it.
A
WORDS BY LISA HAYNES
golden glow delivers the instant feel-good factor but a natural tan isn’t without risks. “Many people feel better about the way they look when they have a tan, but sunbathing or using UV tanning beds can cause premature ageing of the skin, wrinkles and skin cancer,” warns Dr Lawrence Samuels, chief of dermatology at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis, USA.” The safest way to undergo a bronze transformation is by swapping the sun lounger for self-tan. Whether you’re aiming for a light glow (think weekend in St Tropez) or dark bronze (fortnight in California), the self-tan market has it nailed with solutions that will keep everyone guessing. Glow with the flow with our expert guide to a golden summer. Base tan Get your glow just right by carrying out a patch test first to see if it suits your skin tone. The same self-tan can look completely different on two people, as it reacts to amino acids in the upper layers of your skin. Mousse, lotion or gel, whatever solution you prefer, avoid orange hand after-effects. “Use a tanning mitt when applying your tan,”
48 AUGUST2013
recommends James Read, leading tanning expert. “Work down in stages so that you don’t miss bits. When tanning your hands and feet, use excess product from the arms and then work it down over and onto the hands, do the same with the legs onto the feet. “Don’t wash your hands for eight hours after tanning; you don’t want the brown arms, white hands look!” A bronzing spray is the easiest method for tanning hard-to-reach areas quickly. Instant formulas are ideal for a quick-fix night out glow but leave-on self-tans develop a deeper, longer lasting colour. “Leave your tan on for five hours for a weekend away look, seven to eight hours for a week away look, or sleep with the tan on for a fortnight away vibe,” says Read. Face glow A glowing complexion is one of the first things that people notice post-holiday, so any manufactured face bronzing needs to be convincing... The aim of the self-tan game is to ensure your face and body seamlessly match up in colour. “Don’t over-tan the face,” warns James Harknett, Sienna X’s celebrity tanning expert. “A tell-tale sign is a dramatically
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y
darker colour on the face. Use a tanning lotion with a colour guide and blend with your day moisturiser, half and half, for a more subtle finish.” Preparation is all-important. As we apply more day-to-day products to our face, there’s the risk of build-up, which may blight a smooth, non-patchy finish. Harknett suggests: “Always ensure you have a clear, smooth base for your tan to cling to; avoid using any oil-based products the day before your tan and gently exfoliate to create even skin tone.” Self-tan products have a tendency to dry out the skin. To make your glow last longer, apply a hydrating mask to the face and neck area and leave on for three to four hours to seal in the colour. Bronze boost Once you have your base tan, intensify your glow with sun-kissed accents and flattering gleamy finishes. To take an English rose complexion up a level to LA bronze, sculpt the face with a matte bronzer to contour the complexion. “For foolproof sculpting, apply your bronzer tracing the number three,” advises Hannah Murray, Topshop make-up consultant. “Starting from the temples sweep around and underneath cheekbone, then around and beneath the jawline without taking the brush off the face. Killer cheekbones in one move!”
No matter how much I cleanse my skin, eat healthily, and drink water, I can’t seem to get rid of stubborn acne on the oily areas of my face. I decided to try and outsmart my spots with an at-home acne clarifying system from Apothederm, targeted for mild-to-moderate acne. The first step in the three-part treatment is the Brightening Cleanser, which I applied on my face by gently massaging it into my skin and then washing off with lukewarm water. My skin felt smooth and supple almost immediately and its delicate fragrance made it one of my favourite products in the kit. Next,
THE TAN COMMANDMENTS Thou shalt prep the skin 24 hours before tanning with a thorough body exfoliation. Thou shalt wax 48 hours and shave 24 hours before tanning. Thou shalt moisturise daily both before and after self-tanning to prolong the golden glow. Thou shalt remove any traces of deodorant to avoid green underarms. Thou shalt banish any traces of old self-tan
A polished gleam over self-tanned skin can lead to instantly longer looking limbs, not to mention an uber-deluxe finish sported by just about every star that hits the red carpet. “For supermodel-like glowing limbs, mix a liquid illuminator with your body moisturiser and apply over legs and arms,” Murray recommends. “It will make skin appear flawless and your body leaner as the light hits it. Also try intensifying the highlight on the shin bones, shoulders and collarbone, applied straight from the tube.” Tried & tested Nilima Marshall tests a three-step kit to battle breakouts and blemishes.
with a wet wipe, especially focusing on dry areas like elbows. Thou shalt use a self-tan with a guide colour if feeling unconfident about application. Thou shalt ensure the body is completely dry before putting clothes back on to avoid tan transferral. Thou shalt wear dark, loose clothing post-tan to avoid dry-cleaning bills. Thou shalt prolong colour by showering with warm or cool water. Thou shalt always softly press the skin dry using a soft, dry towel and avoid abrasive products.
I used the refreshing Clarifying Toner generously on my face and neck, which removed any excess dirt, oil and traces of eye make-up missed by the cleanser. For the final step, I used the Acne Clarifying Treatment in the affected areas in small amounts using a cotton bud. The instructions warn of the possibilities of excessive drying, so I only applied a thin layer in acne-prone areas. The kit is virtually odourless, gentle to skin, and easy to use, but the results were slower than I anticipated. My spots have reduced but are still visible after two weeks of daily use. I found the combination of the cleanser and toner highly effective in reducing oiliness but, unfortunately, the treatment didn’t make my acne magically disappear. Apothederm Acne Clarifying System includes Brightening Cleanser, £24; Clarifying Toner, £24; Acne Clarifying Treatment, £29.50. GET INTO SHAPE THE EASY WAY A revolutionary treatment for both Men and Women By Rachel Gold Fashion & Beauty Editor I arrived for my treatment feeling a little apprehensive yet slightly excited as the Electro slim treatment had been described to” Guarantee inch loss” and to show “ Immediate results”
increased or decreased dependant on the client and tolerance level. It was a bit unusual at first, however it felt like a fairly firm all over body massage. For 45 minutes I was relaxed and listened to soothing music
I think it is important to say at this point that I am not over weight and I do train regularly. However I have a fair amount of cellulite on my hips and bottom, which is really unsightly, and I just cannot seem to shift it no matter how many squats I do! So it was my aim to target those areas in particular. My fears were elayed and nerves calmed when I was met at reception by the delightful and friendly nutritionist Lamiss. During our consultation I was given a print out of my body composition analysis which is very comprehensive and extremely in depth and interesting.
I could feel my body being toned! When the treatment was finished I felt refreshed and a little tingly but best of all I had lost 7 inches of my total body measurements.
Who is this treatment for? The treatment is for anyone who wants to lose weight People who cannot or do not want to go to the gym Anyone who may have lost a lot of weight and wants to tighten and tone the muscles Women or Men who have cellulite and want to tone up Men who want to get rid of unsightly moobs For people who want to see immediate results I was weighed, and my body fat percentage was measured. We also discussed my lifestyle and eating habits. On to the treatment room, which was nice and calm with a relaxing atmosphere. I was measured with a tape measure at different points of my body. LOCAL CARE FROM A LOCAL COMPANY When looking for care for an elderly family member it’s really important to make the right choice.
H
ome Instead Senior Care, a company specialising in the athome care of older people, has 5 offices across Hertfordshire and is passionate about providing care to its clients which not only improves the quality of their lives but those of their families too. Speaking about their service, Peter Neighbour from the Watford office said, “The work we do assures the wellbeing and safety of our clients and brings peace of mind to their families and this is really important. “More often than not these days older people’s children live too far away to provide day to day care for their parents and that’s where we come in, providing companionship and a regular, friendly face at the door. “Some of our clients require more complex care and we can assist with this too.” Home Instead know that quality care cannot be delivered in short, rushed visits so, unlike many of the care services reported in the media, they insist that care visits are of a minimum one hour duration. They also understand how important it is for clients to have continuity of care from the right caregiver. For this reason a great deal of attention is paid to carefully matching caregivers to clients so that they share common areas of interest and can form an immediate bond. Peter continued, “We are passionate about providing the highest standard of person-centred care. Our ethos is simple – treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. In doing this we are improving our clients’ quality of life and helping them to remain safely in their own homes, leading

an independent life.” Home Instead’s service is extremely flexible and ranges from help a few hours a week to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care such as assistance with bathing, dressing and medications reminders; home help covering housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties; and companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company. The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care, respite care plus end of life care. With an ageing population, cases of dementia are increasing at an alarming rate, which means that more and more people will be affected by the disease at some point in their lives. Home Instead have developed a specialised City and Guilds accredited training programme, which is being rolled out to all caregivers. This is being followed by a new initiative – Dementia Workshops for family members. These are designed to help those caring for a loved one with dementia understand the disease and also provides coping strategies to help deal with the sometimes difficult behaviours associated with the condition. Workshops are being rolled out across Hertfordshire in the coming months. For more information on Home Instead Senior Care please visit www.homeinstead.co.uk to find your nearest local office.

ipples is an award-winning premier bathroom retailer and has been creating top quality bathrooms for well over 25 years. Long gone are the days when a sparse, white tiled space would suffice – customers are now looking to add a touch of luxury and decadence to their daily routines. With busy schedules taking over our lives it’s no wonder the bathroom has become a place of well-being and with the wealth of products available there has never been a better time to have fun and inject some serious personality into your bathroom. Ripples in Harpenden provides a relaxing environment in which to create your dream bathroom and the talented design team recognise the importance of design solutions to help make the most of the hidden potential of your bathroom space.

Create your dream bathroom - Ask the experts If you’re thinking of improving your bathroom this Summer but finding it hard to be inspired by the limited space, Ripples trained designers can advise on how to make the smallest room in the house the place you want to spend the most time. Martin McDonagh owner of Ripples Harpenden suggests when planning a bathroom think of the function of the room and who will be using it? You can then answer many questions about material, products, layout and storage. The bathroom needs to work for you on a daily basis, so whether that is bathing or showering the room needs to be designed to fit your requirements. The Ripples Harpenden Showroom is conveniently situated 59 High Street, Harpenden and offers a selection of bathroom displays, which

types of spray such as overhead drench or rain showers. Rainshower shower heads are ideal for wet rooms as the water flows vertically and limits the amount of splashing.
What makes Ripples extra special is that each bathroom is tailor-made to your individual requirements, therefore you can feel confident that your design is unique.
For true extravagance, a ceiling flush module which mimics natural rainfall provides the ultimate showering experience. If you reside in a hard water area do consider the installation of a water softener and specify “rub it clean” nodules on the shower head to prevent the build-up of limescale.
Ripples experienced designers will pay attention to detail and add those all-important personal touches, which include designs that are handdrawn to help you create your own, individual bathroom scheme.
Chrome is currently the most popular finish for shower and bathroom fittings but is by no means the only choice available. If you want something a little different then finishes such as stainless steel, brushed nickel or antique gold can be used to great effect.
Latest Trends Today, showering has become much more about an experience rather than pure functionality, with customers looking for space and easy clean options. A natural first stage is the planning of the shower where several key issues will have to be addressed, including drainage, water pressure, ceiling height and ventilation. Everyone has their own very personal view on what makes the perfect showering zone – but generally most want easy clean options, ample space, thermostatically controlled water temperature, different

2013
is proving to be a great year for British sport...
and you could put swimming at the top of your sporting agenda!
A
fter the truly inspirational Olympic year the country is continuing its winning streak, with Andy Murray holding up the Wimbledon trophy for the first time for Britain in 77 years, the Lions doing their stuff in fine style, and even a possibility of great results in the Ashes. This all points to a new high in interest in sport and physical fitness, and the regimes that make it happen - like swimming. Last year, inspired by London 2012, Origin launched its Olympic range of pool houses, anticipating this swing to healthy relaxation. They have already built many of these fitness motivated architect designed schemes, and their clients are enjoying the healthy fun of swimming with their families as never before. A world of difference... Established over thirty years, the company still handles every element of the design and building process, without bringing in any outside contractors whatsoever. Origin takes the process from beginning to end, with speed and efficiency. From concept to completion… Origin’s architects and designers bring a wealth of experience and bright ideas to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Many members of the pool house building teams have been involved since the very early days of the company. Building an indoor pool house is a complex business, so many of Origin’s buildings are based on the company’s established styles. For example, The Panorama has a light, airy construction with a bright glazed lantern roof – and is created to co-ordinate with the style of your home. The Barn has all the appearance of a country barn conversion, but is built to current construction standards to be the perfect home for a superb heated pool. The Olympic has exceptional designer looks and a wide expanse of glass bringing a real indoor/outdoor feel to your swimming. These established styles come 60 AUGUST2013
in a wide range of standard sizes, and form the basis of many of Origin’s bespoke projects. Your heated pool will be in a style of your choice. Bespoke designs… Origin is recognised as the foremost designers of one-off buildings and extensions, designed and developed to co-ordinate with their surroundings perfectly. Materials and finishes are carefully matched with the existing structure – so the finished result is a handsome extension to the property, hiding a luxurious heated pool. Outdoor swimming too… Origin is aware that many people prefer to swim in the sun (or under the stars) and an outdoor pool can be one of the most aspirational features a home can have. The level of skill and understanding of pool technology has helped Origin to become one of the country’s foremost outdoor pool providers. All the details… As well as redesigning and updating their interactive website, and producing a new range of publicity material, Origin has also committed to a monthly email newsletter, eNews, to announce the latest and greatest improvements the company has been working on, and of course show the pick of the recent triumphs.
For full details of all Origin’s pool houses the very best way to start things off is to get in touch with Fiona on 01895 823366, or email fiona@originleisure.com. Fiona will send you brochures, fill you in with all the details, and even arrange for you to meet one of our directors on site to get the whole process going. Or visit www.originleisure.com to see our constantly changing and updating interactive website. Origin Leisure Harefield Middlesex UB9 6TH

Venetian Plaster
FROM RENAISSANCE TO MODERN RESURGENCE
V
enetian Plaster may be a phrase many are unfamiliar with in the UK. With its roots in renaissance Venice, Stucco Veniziano or “polished plaster”, as our British construction industry lovingly if not so tastefully calls it, has seen a surprising resurgence in Modern times due to the inventive new ways of using it being developed and the high end designers and architects use of it in prestigious work. We caught up with John Hudson of Italian Venetian, one of a growing number of serious UK based craftsmen presenting these beautiful finishes. John is currently opening a new and unique showroom in the heart of the old city, Saint Albans. “Venetian plaster has been around a long time, since roman times, but it was developed in Venice in the 16th – 17th century. Venice was the financial capital of the world, the buildings were adorned with marble to the point that the foundations were sinking into the lagoon bed. Using slaked lime and crushed marble dust and bits of old brick for colour, Stucco Veniziano or Venetian plaster was re-born. The recipe has developed again; the original recipe has always had great characteristics, anti-mould, anti-bacterial, completely natural and green,
breathable, and now with modern techniques really fits from rustic to clean architecture”
“The Venetian plaster is mixed and tinted to any colour, we can match most colours. It is wet applied to walls, ceilings, any surface really. Most of our work is on feature walls to give that luxurious wow factor to any room, in bathrooms and wet rooms – What is great about this stuff is that it is unique. Every applicator has their own style. The finished product flows organically, there are no grout lines and no mould stains after a few months, it is right at home in a warm moisture rich environment. It is comparable in price as well, as it is usually charged per metre fully fitted. With tiles you can pay £100 per metre and then have to get a good tiller in to make them shine. Our average rate fully fitted is £100 per metre.” John wants to bring this to middle England. We visited Johns’ showroom in Saint Albans, and were absolutely amazed that we had never heard of or seen this before. I am sure that the reader is still unsure as to what exactly it is. Suffice it is to say that it has to be seen in the flesh. The answer is frankly given by Italian Venetian; “Look, this finish has been around for a long time. Mass produced tiles and wallpapers are very profitable
for the big DIY stores, but the choice is very narrow, with emphasis being put on dressing the walls. Our finishes take the room to another level. This art is usually learned by good decorators and plasterers, who offer it as an option to their customers, but as it is not in the consciousness of the public it can be a hard sell. It just doesn’t photograph well, the image is always flattened. But when you see it in the flesh it washes over the senses and it really is a delight to see the same reaction from anyone who visits the shop.” Whatever we end up settling on as a name for this stuff, It is quietly becoming London’s best kept decorative secret. For years the homes of those in the know have seen Venetian plaster work, it is specified in design and architects drawings on very modern sharp works, such as the flagship Audi showroom on Berkley street, Piccadilly, a unique finish developed by Italian Venetian with Audi. Italian Venetian is opening a showroom on George street St. Albans in the courtyard of the Secret Garden cafe on the 24th May, we can’t wait to see it! For any enquiries or questions, John is available on 01727 837135.

or a company famous for producing utility 4x4s with a hint of ‘old money’ luxury, Land Rover’s move into the lifestyle end of the market - with the Evoque - has been nothing short of a lifealtering experience for the British brand. You name it, it’s skyrocketed: production numbers, brand awareness, sales, profits. Granted, the Evoque wasn’t the company’s first foray into the ‘lifestyle’ market, that honour fell to the first generation Range Rover Sport. That said, it shared more than few design cues with the equally chunky-looking Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery. That’s all gone the way of the dinosaur with the arrival of the latest generation Range Rover Sport. Visual similarities to the Evoque, the rock star of the range, are no coincidence, while Land Rover’s continued focus on reducing weight and boosting the level of
68 AUGUST2013
technology in its cars continues with this more streamlined Sport. Lighter, more economical and offering a more engaging on-road driving experience than the car it replaces, alongside Land Rover’s long established off-road credentials, this new generation Sport also boasts more cabin space plus the option of a familyfriendly third row of seats. One other option worthy of note is the car’s high-low transfer gearbox. Reflecting its onroad and lifestyle bias, it’s not now a feature you can expect to see as standard on the Sport. Land Rover executives are, however, keen to stress that even without it, the Sport’s off-roading potential still easily exceeds the abilities of most drivers and the competition. Still, you can always tick the appropriate box for the full-fat experience if you need it.
And, just like with the latest Range Rover, the Sport adopts its maker’s next-gen Terrain Response system, which includes an auto mode clever enough to sense changes in terrain and change the engine, gearbox and suspension settings accordingly. Manual control remains and, despite the Sport’s streamlined looks and glossy celebrity endorsements, you’re only a few button presses away from being able to confidently scale mountains, wade through rivers or charge through power-sapping sand. The final piece in the Range Rover Sport’s performance jigsaw is the car’s engine line-up. For maximum wow factor there’s a 5.0-litre supercharged petrol motor that’s predictably destined to be most popular in places where petrol is cheap and owners are super-rich. For the rest of us, diesel will be the fuel of choice, with a high power 3.0-litre SDV6 variant
M OTO R S
boasting 292 horsepower and a lower power version for entry-level models producing a still useful 258 horsepower. V8 diesel power is also in the pipeline. On the road the high power six-cylinder diesel Sport is only trumped by the supercharged model in the way it sounds; the former is quiet and refined while the petrol experience is dominated by a Nascar exhaust note if that appeals. With an embarrassment of riches in both power and torque departments, the SDV6 Range Rover Sport is the consummate all-rounder. Ample low down torque is complimented by superb throttle sensitivity, making it ideal not just for inching over treacherous obstacles but also inching into supermarket car par spaces. The Sport excels at motorway journeys and spirited A-road sprints. Bodyroll is expertly kept in check and, despite the presence of aesthetically pleasing but large diameter wheels, ride comfort is also top notch. For a car destined to spend much of its time on the road, this should be music to any prospective owner’s ears. And as an owner you’ll also spend most of your time inside the Sport’s plush cabin. Land Rover’s minimalist approach with the latest Range Rover has extended to the Sport, and the lack of fuss and modest button count allows you to better appreciate the swathes of wood, leather and more contemporary trim that tastefully decorate the Sport’s interior. Factor in ample room fore and aft plus sound ergonomics for the driver, and it’s hard to fault an environment with a cabin ambience easily rivalling that of the best conventional luxury saloons. With all the usual safety and comfort equipment you’d expect to see at this price point, plus the Sport’s impressive driving dynamics and the cabin ambience, it’s clear that this second generation car has raised the bar in an already competitive market.
Facts at a glance Model: Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic, from £74,995 on the road. Range Rover Sport range from £51,550 to £81,550. Engine: 3.0-litre diesel unit developing 292bhp. Land for development? Are you wondering how to make the most of your LAND? If you have a home with development potential like the one below, you will probably have received letters from builders, developers and estate agents. You probably know that you can choose how to sell the land: • Sell the site subject to planning • Get planning yourself then sell it • Build the new home and sell that • Do a joint venture with a reputable builder
Before – 1 house and garden
Site sold subject to planning
After – 2 large detached houses
If you are wondering how to maximise your land value – give us a call, we’re able to help with any of the four methods of sale and can work with you to maximise the land value.
In many cases, landowners prefer our developer contacts to seek planning at their own expense so you can remain free from costs and planning expenses. Please call quickly, we have builders chasing us for land and we recommend acting now before the CIL (tax) is introduced which can seriously reduce the value of your land. Lance Trendall

St Albans Clock Tower
T
he site of the Eleanor cross which once stood in St Albans lies opposite Waxhouse Gate. This was one of the entrances to the medieval Abbey. In 1290, the funeral procession of Queen Eleanor, wife of Edward I rested here on its slow journey to Westminster. Neglected, the cross was pulled down in 1703 to be replaced by the town pump. Later, in 1874 a fountain was put in its place. This is now in Victoria Place, where the gaol used to be. Behind the cross and built between 1403 and 1412, is the Clock Tower, the only medieval example in the country. The map on the right shows the centre of St Albans around 1700 including the Clock Tower. From the beginning it had a mechanical clock, a great rarity at that time. As the Abbey also had one, this was probably the reason for having the same. Indeed, the Clock Tower itself seems to have been intended as a visible statement of St. Albans’ civic ambitions against the power of the Abbot. It was both a look out as well as a curfew, ringing out the times when people had to be indoors “covering the fire”.
floor were let together until roughly 1900. Progressing onto the second floor, you will discover the clock keeper’s living room, where he and his family would have lived between 1412 and 1866. The third floor boasts the Victorian clock, which was added when the tower was restored in 1866. It was designed by Lord Grimthorpe, who was the leading Victorian authority on clocks – he also designed the mechanism of Big Ben. The fourth floor houses the original bell itself, still in place and weighing one tonne. From 1808-1814 during the Napoleonic war, it was used by the Admiralty as a semaphore station. This was operated by a shutter system and could help relay a message to or from Yarmouth in 5 minutes. By the 1860’s the Tower was in a bad way and was nearly demolished. The restoration in 1864 was supervised by Sir Gilbert Scott. In 2004, the roof was rebuilt with improved public safety and access. It is planned to re-display the exhibition in the near future.
However, as you start your journey up the 93 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase, you will discover that each of its five floors reveals a snapshot of the tower’s varied historical past.
You can now access the roof of the clock tower, which not only offers beautiful views of the abbey of St Albans and the historical Roman town of Verulamium below, but is also the site of the shutter telegraph. This was used as one of 16 stations linking Whitehall and the North Sea Fleet in Great Yarmouth (within just five minutes) during the Napoleonic Wars.
