The world’s oldest known bottle of

Courvoisier Cognac is now on sale at Harrods

P

riced at £95,000, this rare and important bottle will excite cognac connoisseurs the world over. The Courvoisier & Curlier was bottled in 1789, the year the French Revolution began, by the two nephews of Felix Courvoisier, the Curlier brothers, making it a unique piece of history. The 1789 Courvoisier & Curlier has been acquired by Harrods from the private Old Liquors Collection of Dutch seller Bay van der Bunt, which is currently the largest collection of historic spirits in the world. Since obtaining the vintage bottle from Sotheby’s, the cognac has been resting, untouched, in Mr van der Bunt’s cellar. Following its purchase, the Courvoisier & Curlier will be on display to the public for six weeks in the Tasting Room of the Harrods Wine Shop, meaning customers can view the remarkably rare antique over the festive season. The 1789 Courvoisier & Curlier will be highly desirable, and sparks an interesting debate as to whether the precious liquid should ever be consumed.

Many of the shops along Regent Street (and especially Saville Row, running parallel) are more expensive than most on Oxford Street but more exclusive. KING’S ROAD The area was made famous by a lively local scene during the ‘Swinging 60s’ and punk fuelled seventies. The doyenne of punk fashion, Vivienne Westwood, still runs her first ever store at the so-called ‘World’s End’ end of The King’s Road. Alt hough the area has none of the character of that time, it is still full of famous faces and is one of the best and most varied places to shop and eat in London. For fashion, King’s Road offers high street regulars such as Jigsaw, French Connection and Gap but if you’re looking for something more original American Classics sell vintage Levi’s and tuxedos. At the Sloane Square end, crowned by Peter Jones, there is the pedestrianised Duke of York Square - full of modern shops and cafes, including Mary Quant and Yves Delorme. You can purchase anything from antiques at The Furniture Cave, to a £40,000 bed from Marshall & Stewart, also taking in upmarket stores quirkily named R.Soles, Sweaty Betty and After Noah.

CARNABY STREET The name Carnaby Street is synonymous with 1960s Swinging London’ - a phrase coined by Time magazine. Nowadays the area has gone through something of a revival and is once again boasting cutting edge designer talents and trendy street ware. With over 140 shops, bars and restaurants to choose from in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit. Shoppers will find rich pickings at urban streetwear shops like Replay, Diesel,Howies, American Apparel and Puma. There are also a number of streets in the immediate area around Carnaby Street - notably Newburgh Street which runs parallel, Foubert’s Place, and Kingly Court which has three floors of one-off ‘concept’ shops, cafes and restaurants set around an open courtyard. Carnaby Street is a fantastic place to buy sports, urban footwear, and there’s also a number of fine cosmetics shops - seek out the Cowshed and MAC Cosmetics - as well as a few boutiques selling vintage mod clothing. Altogether very stylish.

16 DECEMBER2012

OXFORD STREET Oxford Street lays claim to being London’s busiest street. The opening of Debenhams, and Selfridges in 1909 marked the beginning of the street’s dominance as a shopping area. Amongst the chaos and bustle, retail therapists will find an oasis of calm in the area’s unrivalled collection of department stores. Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis all have their flagship stores on Oxford Street. Selfridges is the department store of Londoners. There’s an incredible selection of British and international designers available and plenty of great restaurants and cafes to chill out in if you get a bit tired. Oxford Street also offers some of the best choice in terms of high street fashion, if you can fight your way through the crowds. Among the best shops are inexpensive but stylish favourites Zara, Mango & Monsoon. You will also find one of the largest collection of eateries, where you can relax for a quick break in between your spending spree.

COVENT GARDEN A visit to Covent Garden is a must, whether you intend to shop, or soak up the atmosphere watching the street entertainers. The focal point of Covent Garden, the market, has dominated the area ever since the Middle Ages. There is also an open-air cobbled area where miming and juggling acts can often be found. Classical music and opera singing often fills the air - not from the Royal Opera House but from street performers who often stage impromptu concerts in the courtyards below street level. Covent Garden is a mecca for shoppers - high Street outlets include Marks & Spencer, Oasis, French Connection, Next and Monsoon, with menswear at Diesel, Replay, Oakley and Paul Smith. Neal Street, which runs to the north west of the Piazza, has more in the way of urbanwear including as well as trendy trainer shops including Office and Size? as well as the Natural Shoe Store and Terra Plana ‘ethical shoes’. If (perish the thought!) you tire of clothes shopping there are scores of excellent places to stop off for a coffee.

KNIGHTSBRIDGE Knightsbridge is one of the most unchanged,

attractive areas of Central London, with little in the way of offices nearby but plenty of shops and restaurants to serve the needs of local residents.

There are plenty of ways to spend money in this beguiling corner of the capital. Harrods is the most famous of the local stores, a huge tourist attraction employing over 3,000 staff in more than 300 departments. However, some much prefer Harvey Nichols, a chicer alternative with three floors of designer wear, a huge beauty department and delectable delicacies on the fifth floor, all at extremely high prices. If you have the money to spend and want some designer clothes, look no further than Sloane Street. Christian Dior, Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Armani, Fendi and Dolce & Gabbana are all within easy walking distance of each other - even in heels! There are also a number of exquisite specialist lingerie stores including Rigby & Peller on Hans Road and La Perla on Sloane Street itself.

CANARY WHARF Canary Wharf is a thriving space and vibrant business district with a wide range of shops, restaurants, pubs and wine bars, as well as healthcare and leisure facilities and an extensive arts and events programme. Their vast range of high-profile retailers secures them as one of the most popular shopping destinations in London eg Aspinal of London, Austin Reed, Bang & Olufsen, Browns London, Dune, Hackett,Karen Millen, Links of London and TM Lewin.

FREEMAN DREADS HIS HOBBIT JOURNEY Martin Freeman is on the cusp of major league movie stardom, so you’d imagine he’d be feeling on top of the world about his good fortune. Not a bit of it. By Susan Griffin

T

he actor has been in the public eye in Britain for more than 10 years, and he laments: “People have been annoying me in restaurants for a long time, and now it’ll just be all over the world. Yippee.” Freeman, who shot to prominence as Tim in Ricky Gervais’s The Office, might not be embracing the fame game but he’s going to have to get used to it - and sharpish with the imminent release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in which he has the starring role of Bilbo Baggins. Based on the 1937 fantasy novel by J.R.R Tolkien, it’s been painstakingly brought to life by the visionary director Peter Jackson. “I’m getting a glimpse of that external reaction to it now, the nearer the film gets to release,” says Freeman, a youthfullooking 41-year-old. “I mean that level of fame obviously is something very different to what most people will get to experience, but my life doesn’t feel any different yet.”

Wearing a blue polo shirt and a black suit, Freeman comes across as friendly and thoughtful, if a little caustic at times. That could simply be his sense of humour or perhaps a protective reflex given that he describes himself as “a very, very private person”. So private that he doesn’t want to confirm how many children he has (a Google search reveals he has a son and daughter with his longterm partner Amanda Abbington). What he will say is that he that doesn’t want his kids to see him as anything other than their dad. “I want to keep my children absolutely out of it until they’re of an age where they can decide,” he says. “Sometimes when I’m stopped in the street and I’m with my children, I always try and get them out of the picture and they’ll go, ‘Why don’t you want us?’ and I’m like, ‘No, I’m protecting you!’” DECEMBER2012 27

You can understand he may be a little defensive, given that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is just the first of three films from the team behind The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The following movies, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug and The Hobbit: There And Back Again, will be released in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Set in the fantastical Middleearth, the tale begins 60 years before the events of The Lord Of The Rings, and sees a young Bilbo Baggins swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug (voiced by Freeman’s Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch). New and old faces pop up along the way. Andy Serkis returns as Gollum, while Sir Ian McKellen reprises his role as wizard Gandalf the Grey, who appears out of the blue to task Bilbo with his audacious plan. They’re soon joined by a band of 13 Dwarves led by the legendary Thorin Oakenshield (Spooks star Richard Armitage) and a host of other new faces. Together the eclectic group embarks on a journey that takes them from the comfortable safety of Hobbiton into the great unknown, through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly

I’m a fan now and see what it’s about but it just wasn’t in my universe then,” says the Hampshire-born actor. Since The Office, Freeman has appeared in a host of British films such as Love Actually, Nativity!, Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. He also recently earned an Emmy and Bafta TV nomination for his role as Dr John Watson in Sherlock but he was far from a global ‘name’ when Peter Jackson cast him in the lead role. That didn’t deter the director, who was so determined to hire Freeman that he rearranged the shooting schedule to allow the actor to leave the film set in New Zealand to film Sherlock in the UK. “I was truly shocked and pleased because I really wanted to play Bilbo, and that’s not the kind of offer that comes back,” says Freeman. “It showed they had such faith in me. They must have seen something in me that could play worry but with humour.” For that reason, Freeman says he didn’t feel too stressed in tackling such an iconic role. “I didn’t feel any pressure is the honest truth,” he says. “At least I didn’t feel Bilbo pressure but I

anging up the stockings, letters to Father Christmas, a children’s choir, giant board games and art galore. For Christmas 2012 The Grove in Hertfordshire takes all that’s best about Christmas – family, children, good food and time together – to offer its guests a Vintage-style Christmas for 2012. The spirit of hospitality and entertainment is alive and well at The Grove in Hertfordshire, the luxury resort known as London’s Country Estate. Once the country seat of the Earls of Clarendon, today the original 18th century Grade II Listed mansion sits alongside the contemporary West Wing. Inside, the design deftly acknowledges the house’s history, whilst giving guests an environment that is fun and relaxed – a compelling mix of fresh air and urban styling, the buzz of the town and the peace of a garden, rural walks and world-class cuisine. Festive family breaks start from £299 per person per night, based on two adults sharing, and reduced rates are available for children sharing their own room. Book for three nights and enjoy a fourth night on a complimentary basis. Breakfast, Dinner, Christmas Day lunch, complimentary entertainment and a selection of activities are all included. Guaranteeing a truly magical Christmas, The Grove are also offering families who book a three night Christmas holiday, complimentary tickets to the nearby Warner Bros. Studio Tour and ‘The Making of Harry Potter’, perfect for fans of the hit wizarding series. The Grove is the perfect setting for a classic family Christmas. The former home of the Earls of Clarendon is set in 300 acres of parkland, woods and gardens; there is plenty of space to let off steam. Inside, there will be a brilliant choice of things to do for every member of the family, whether they are young at heart, or young in years. The staff at Anouska’s kids club (recognised by OFSTED as ‘outstanding’) will act as Christmas ringmasters, to keep younger children happy whilst parents can abscond to the spa, the spectacular golf course, or just relax with a spot of afternoon tea by the fire. Has the kids dive into a bursting programme of activities, parents will love the time to explore the beautiful landscaped gardens, master a round of golf on The Grove’s championship golf course or sink into a superb ESPA treatment at the much-lauded Sequoia spa. So from putting on a panto and a pop-up kid’s cinema, to outdoor games for big boys, and lessons in winter planting in the garden, The Grove’s Christmas looks back to a simpler time. This is not about stress and shopping, but about real Christmas trees, home-made food, turning off the screen and bringing back the magic. Celebrations don’t have to come to an end after Christmas; The Grove is also offering a sparkling New Year’s Eve package to carry on the festive season in style. A new book brings the history of Luton Hoo to life with a fascinating insight into the people who lived and worked there and its transformation into a luxury hotel. Containing many previously unpublished photographs, documents and stories, Luton Hoo written by historian Peter Pugh is a definitive work on the mansion and 1,064-acre estate that is now Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa. The 246-page volume traces the rich, colourful and often dramatic history of the house built in 1767 by leading architect Robert Adam for the 3rd Earl of Bute. Virtually destroyed by a catastrophic fire in 1843, the mansion was rebuilt into the grand property that stands today.

Dinosaurs star in new Rye House attraction

inosaurs have arrived at Rye House Kart Raceway at Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, with the opening of a new year-round attraction, the Rye-assic Adventure Park. Nearly a year in the making and designed for the 0-9 years age group, the one-acre area brings prehistoric creatures from the Cretaceous Period 144 million years ago to life with sight and sound as a backdrop to a collection of new rides and games in six activity zones. Giants of the past featured include Brachiosaurus and Stegosaurus, as well as the feared Tyrannosaurus Rex, in full life-size splendour. The park, designed to preserve the natural habitat of today’s creatures as well, is at Rye House, just north of Junction 25 of the M25 and the A10 by-pass. It is five minutes from Rye House Station on the Hertford East line direct from London’s Liverpool Street Station. The Rye House Kart Raceway is already a well-known Hertfordshire attraction for children and adults. Guests can hire petrol or electric karts or bring their own and the circuit is also the home of Hoddesdon Kart Club, where Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton began his racing career. As well as the driving, the Raceway features the Rye House Laser Combat arena, where visitors can experience modern warfare games – without bruises or pain. The indoor arena has sound, light, smoke and visual effects to simulate realistic close-range combat. The opening of the adventure park has been marked with a new website at www.ryeassicadventurepark.co.uk with full details of all the attractions. Highlights include the Rye-Assic Raceway featuring “Quad-zilla” super-safe electric quad bikes suitable for children aged three and over using a purposebuilt track under the watchful eye of a Brontosaurus. There is also boat racing, crazy golf, a “Lost in Time” maze, a bouncy castle and trampolines. An outdoor play area centres around a pirate galleon giving children’s imaginations a work-out as they clamber round the vessel, which has slides, mini-

climbing walls, gangplanks, a basketball net, see-saws, swings and “springers”. Indoors, the Dinodrome soft play area has three zones - the Soccer Cage, Big Red Bus and Giants’ Play Station - all close enough for parents to keep a watchful eye on their charges from the comfort of the coffee shop and viewing enclosure. There is also an educational lounge and gift shop. With an “Explore and Learn” theme, the Rye-assic Adventure Park offers special packages for schools, families and groups and is open from 9.30am-5.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays and 10am-5pm on Sundays. The attractions will be using school projects to enhance the experience through educational displays and Junior Explorer programmes. Another special feature is coffee mornings every Tuesday from 10am-11.30am allowing parents and carers to relax while the children play. Admission is £3.95 per child, with a cuppa on the house for the grown-ups. General manager Ryan Musk says he is confident of the park’s appeal because he used his own family and friends’ children to test the various attractions. “This is one park that will attract fans again and again,” he adds. “I have been speaking to people as they are on their way home and the only ones not delighted with their day out are some of the children, because they don’t want to leave.” Adults and under one’s are admitted free to the park. Children aged one to 11 pay £3.95 per child on weekdays and £4.95 at weekends. Parking is free. The Rye-assic Adventure Park is at Rye House Kart Raceway, Rye Road, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire EN11 0EH. A giftfor life re you wrecking your brain of what to buy for your children this Christmas.

Will it be something plastic from China, the latest toy craze they’ve seen on TV, or another addition to the electronic gadgetry gallery? And somewhere in the back of your mind you remember all those toys that were abandoned within weeks in years past. If this is your dilemma, you are certainly not alone. Many parents now try to balance the short-lived joy of unwrapping presents with genuine long-term happiness for their children. Not an easy task! When the Christmas break is over, children will go back to school and with it all the usual pressure and stress will return. In order to cope you may even stop them playing with their new toys - ironic isn’t it. If you could help your children to cope better at school, to unlock their true potential and boost their confidence and self-esteem, wouldn’t that be a real long lasting and valuable gift? Exercising the mind through a healthy brain work-out is possibly the best way to succeed at school, to change behaviour and to become happier and more confident. Recent discoveries in the field of neuro-plasticity have enabled scientists to develop effective, non-invasive and safe methods to boost attention, understanding, memory, reading and writing. More specialised processing by each brain-half and better synchronisation between the two sides can dramatically improve educational performance and aid cognitive and emotional development. Improvements in sensory processing can also help those with conditions such as Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism. The SAS neuro-sensory programmes are not a miracle cure but a sophisticated, simple to follow, method for children aged three or over. It takes just one hour a day over three weeks and has already helped thousands of children throughout the world to succeed. The SAS programmes exercise the brain with minimal effort and maximum results. As one father commented: “After struggling with maths and English for so long it is fantastic to see our lovely daughter happy to tackle all her school work and really beginning to enjoy learning - she improves day by day.” A delighted mother wrote: “His teacher keeps writing us how amazing his reading progress has been in the last couple of weeks. He went up 3 levels in reading in one month, fully catching up with his class.”

For more information on the SAS method call 020 3239 4880, or visit www.sascentre.com.

Cathey’s Flowers Making your special day exceed expectations

i

am a freelance floral specialist for weddings and events. I so enjoy meeting up with brides and families to help organise their forthcoming occasion. The ultimate goal being the bringing together of all their ideas with help from the expertise I have learnt over the years. I first started working in a florists at the age of 15 years old, by the time I was 22, I owned my first shop, with two more following in short succession. All successful businesses which were sold by the year 2000. I found there was a niche for a floral planner for people who didn’t want to go into a cold busy florist, and being given poor customer service, ultimately making the whole experience harder than it needed to be. So this is why I decided taking all the stress out of the procedure for the client was the way forward for me. With todays busy lives and computers it is so easy to organise anything and everything... I find that every day I’m in contact with someone new, either emailing across ideas and photos, pricing up their requests and or arranging a free consultation, which I offer at home or at the venue. And for those who prefer chatting on the phone, a long talk making sure all the details are perfect.

48 DECEMBER2012

I have been involved and organised two weddings recently in which didn’t meet the brides until their wedding day! Their special days went wonderfully for both parties. A great endorsement of the trust they placed in my ability to deliver exactly what they desired. I am available 7 days a week to fit in with peoples free time with their wedding or special party. The service includes everything from entry into the venues and churches to helping with putting on button holes, anything that I can do to help make your day perfectly organised and totally stress free. I can also recommend a great freelance hair stylist and make-up artist team, a Band, photographers and a superb cake maker and you have only one person to contact to make all this happen... GET INTO MISTLETOE MODE LIPS ARE THE INSTANT WAY TO LOOK PARTY-READY. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO WORK A STATEMENT POUT. BY LISA HAYNES

NATURAL BEAUTIES LOOK AWAY NOW, THE SEASON OF EXCESS IS UPON US. But if you prefer to leave the glitter and sparkle for the Christmas tree, then look to lipstick for a festive beauty boost. "Lipstick provides an easy way to change your look, taking you from girl-next-door to sexy siren with just a swipe of colour," says Jemma Kidd, make-up artist and author of Jemma Kidd Make-up Secrets. "It's an instant pick-me-up." Prime your pout for mistletoe kisses with irresistible statement lips. WEARING IT WELL e power of your pout should never be underestimated it's the main focus when we talk, laugh, drink and kiss, making lips a prime candidate for a party makeover. "A fully made-up mouth can be the finishing touch to your look, and some women feel naked without their signature lipstick," Kidd says. "It is probably the safest way to go bold. e rest of the face must be flawless, with minimal make-up in neutral tones so that the statement colour really stands out and you don't look overly made-up." Take your lip size and shape into consideration when you're choosing textures and colours. Satin-finish lipsticks are flattering for most due to their creamy coverage and slight glossy finish. "Matte colour can make a bold statement that looks stunning on fuller mouths, especially in classic Hollywood starlet red, but be careful if you are older, or if you have small/thin lips as matte finishes can look harsh and ageing," Kidd warns. 54 DECEMBER2012

CREATIVE COLOUR Unless you're working a strong eye, give the nude tones a wide birth if you want your lips to be the star attraction this Christmas. "For the most wearable brights on the mouth, go for red, pink, purple or orange," Kidd advises. If you have porcelain skin, stick to cool pinks and blue-toned reds. ose with olive complexions should opt for berry or plum tones, oranges and warm, orange-toned reds. If you have dark skin, Kidd recommends experimenting with rich browns, strong oranges and deep plums. When trawling the lipstick stands in search of your perfect pout match, avoid testing on the back of your hand. Kidd explains: "If you can, try a lipstick on your lips to test the true colour (use a cotton bud to apply), or try on your fingertip, which is closer in colour to your lips because of the concentration of blood vessels there." LIP LONGEVITY All that prosecco supping and mistletoe pecking calls for extra staying power during the party season. With the right preparation, you can make your lipstick last longer. "Use a lip primer, or a dab of foundation or concealer," Kidd reveals. "After outlining your lips, apply lip liner over the whole surface to provide a smooth, even undercoat of colour and a waxy base for the lipstick to adhere to." It's winter, so think layering. One coat of lippy isn't sufficient so apply your lipstick once, blot with

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

a tissue and then layer on another coat. If it feels too bold, blot with your finger for a pressed-in stain effect. Kidd recommends a light dusting of translucent powder or blusher patted on top of the lipstick for a matte finish and extra staying power. Pigment-packed lipsticks can be drying on the lips, especially long-lasting formulas. Use a lip balm under your lipstick to avoid the dreaded cracked look. POUT PERFECTION If you're ready to take the pout plunge, Jemma Kidd has these golden lipstick rules:

n Dark colours are generally harder to wear than paler shades. ey can be more draining and ageing, and you also need to be more accurate in your application as any slips will be obvious.

n Bright lipsticks will be more flattering if you have a small mouth or thin lips.

n When you are wearing a dramatic, bold lipstick, keep the rest of your make-up minimal.

n If you buy a shade that turns out to be too dark or bright, blend it with another lipstick or gloss to achieve a bespoke colour that suits you perfectly. n Oily lipsticks, liquid glosses and stains tend to migrate beyond the lip line, so choose thicker, drier and less greasy formulas if 'bleeding' is an issue.

n To achieve the illusion of bigger lips, use a lip liner in a colour that matches your lipstick and outline your lips just a fraction outside your natural lip line. TRIED & TESTED Lauren Taylor tames her mane with a DIY blow-dry masterclass. Like a lot of women, my hair just won't do what I tell it to. If only there was a way to recreate that just-left-the-salon feeling at home... Now Saks are offering a blow-dry menu with the chance to learn techniques you can reuse at home, and I went to watch Saks's creative director Alison Dace demonstrate four different blow-dry techniques. First, the 'Tjuz It' tousled look was created by blow-drying the roots with a rounded brush. Using a only a splattering of mousse, the stylist worked the roots to give lift and volume. A backcombing technique was demonstrated to make sure it looks subtle and sophisticated, by not taking the comb all the way through the hair so the top layer is left straight. Next there was the 'Wrap It' technique - the stylist dries the hair flat and downwards against the scalp, using the shape of the head to wrap the hair around. Another technique was the simple, straight 'Polish It' look, and the final masterpiece was a Kate Middleton-esque 'Bounce It' style; loose curls achieved with a large barrel curling tong. e masterclass was a helpful insight into new things to try with my tresses. It's a great idea to get your stylist to talk through their techniques step-by-step - I recorded my favourite look with my smartphone. When it comes to blow-drying like a professional, a lot of it comes down to investing in a good big round brush, mousse - and lots of practice in front of the mirror. n A Saks blow-dry starts from £22. For information visit www.saks.co.uk n Request a one-to-one blow dry masterclass with your local salon. Visit www.wahanda.com/treatment /blow-dry/ n

ABSOLUTELY

FLAWLESS BY LEVANAH REYES-WAINWRIGHT

A SURVEY BY SUPERDRUG HAS REVEALED THAT WOMEN SPEND AN AVERAGE OF 330 DAYS OF THEIR LIVES APPLYING MAKE-UP AND WITH A MILLION STRESSES WEIGHING US DOWN, WE WANT FOUNDATION FORMULAS THAT ARE QUICK, EASY TO USE AND ACTUALLY BENEFIT OUR SKIN WHEN APPLIED. I’VE PICKED SOME OF THE BEST NEW FOUNDATIONS TO ENSURE YOU CAN FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH. BEST FOR DULL, UNEVEN SKIN

Thick, caked on foundation can often accentuate your flaws so today’s foundation formulas are more natural-looking, with flawless skin best achieved by using a ‘less is more’ method. If you are looking for a unified complexion that radiates luminousity, L’Oréal Paris have introduced Lumi Magique Light Infusing Foundation (£10.99, available nationwide) in six wearable shades designed to instantly illuminate the skin. Your skin will stay hydrated for up to 24 hours with lightweight coverage and a velvet touch finish. If you are looking instead to disguise imperfections, then new Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation (£10.99, Superdrug) is a new generation of liquid foundation that melts into the skin and contains 3 micronized colour concealing pigments designed to correct blemishes, diminish dark circles and eradicate redness.

BEST FOR OILY SKIN

Previously oily and combinations skins have been lumped into the same category, but now companies like Clinique and Clarins are recognising the need for foundation formulas that work in harmony with each skin type. Clinique’s new Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup (£21.50, available nationwide), is specially formulated for oily skin to control shine throughout the day. The ultra-light gel-cream formula feels refreshing and silky on the skin to maintain a fresh look all day. Clarins’ Ever Matte Foundation SPF 15 (£24, clarins.co.uk) uses an exclusive plant based ‘Skin Detox’ complex to balance shine and tighten pores whilst still giving day-long comfort and stay-fresh coverage. 56 DECEMBER2012

BEST FOR COMBINATION SKIN

Revolutionary formulas for combination skins now control oily areas whilst hydrating dry, tight patches to ensure a fresh, semi-matte finish. Chanel’s Perfection Lumière (£36, chanel.com) is both moisturising and mattifying, comes in 16 shades and different undertones e.g.yellow, for a real tone-matching result, which is lightweight and buildable. Also perfect for combination skins is Hello Flawless Oxygen WOW (£24.50, benefitcosmetics.co.uk) from Benefit. This oil-free formula has a hydrating complex that helps to plump up skin along with vitamin C & E known to prevent signs of ageing. Available in 9 shades and with an SPF25, Hello Flawless delivers instant results to leave you looking flawless in a flash.

BEST FOR MATURE SKIN

As we age our complexions become thirsty and lines and wrinkles appear, so you need foundations that cover without drawing attention to imperfections. By Terry’s Sheer Expert (£44, spacenk.co.uk) provides adjustable coverage and disguises signs of fatigue. Infused with hyaluronic acid, this perfecting fluid acts like Photoshop in a tube, to deliver a natural satin finish. Reinventing the tinted moisturiser is natural skincare specialist Liz Earle, with Sheer Skin Tint SPF15 (£21, lizearle.com). Rich and creamy like a foundation, yet lightweight, this glides effortlessly onto the skin to enhance natural skin tones. Jemma Kidd’s Skin Rescue Bio-Complex Veil SPF15 (£32, jemmakidd.com) is the ultimate multi-tasker that stimulates collagen production and preps, primes, tints, illuminates and protects the skin all-in-one.

HAVE A (SENSIBLY)

MerryChristmas! 'TIS THE SEASON TO BE MERRY - BUT TOO MUCH BOOZE CAN IMPACT HEALTH IN COUNTLESS WAYS. IF YOU'RE CONCERNED ABOUT OVERDOING IT WITH THE ALCOHOL THIS CHRISTMAS, READ THESE TIPS FOR ENJOYING A FESTIVE TIPPLE SENSIBLY.

and two-thirds who end up admitted to hospital, or die, from burns have been drinking. TOP TIPPLE TIPS n If you're responsible for cooking the festive feast, laying the table with candles or keeping the fire topped up with logs, take it easy on the booze and ask tipsy family members to keep out of the way until the work's done and accident hazards cleared away. Scalds can happen in a flash and a knocked candle could lead to a devastating blaze in moments. n On nights out and at parties, pace yourself by alternating alcohol with soft drinks or water so that you don't get as drunk, and only allow your glass to be topped up once it's empty so you can keep track of how much you've had. Keep an eye on your friends if they're behaving recklessly - dancing on the bar might raise a few laughs but a fall could be nasty.

W

hether it's sweet, steaming mulled wine, a soothing eggnog or a few cheeky glasses of sherry in time for the Queen's Speech, booze is as big a part of Christmas as mistletoe and mince pies. And why not? ere's nothing wrong with indulging in your favourite festive tipple. A nice glass of red can complete a meal, and enjoying a couple of drinks with family and friends can be one of the joys of the season. But, as the charity Drinkaware - which promotes responsible drinking - points out, alcohol can also lead to serious consequences, including health damage and accidents. You don't need to abstain from drinking altogether. Simply spare some time to think about how you can drink more sensibly to ensure your Christmas is merry in all the right ways.

64 DECEMBER2012

ACCIDENTS HAPPEN ough many of us associate alcohol with having fun, it's actually one of the leading causes of accidents. While spilling wine down your top or stumbling over a chair may be minor, and sometimes even amusing, drinking can lead to serious accidents, too. Alcohol slows down the brain's responses, making us clumsier than usual, with slower reaction speed and impaired judgment. It can also make us more likely to take risks - not a great combination. People who have been drinking usually suffer more serious accidents than those who haven't. According to Drinkaware, alcohol is the single biggest cause of accidents in the home. Of the 4,000 fatal domestic accidents in the UK every year, 400 are alcohol-related. Plus, around one in three fires are caused by people under the influence of alcohol,

HOMEWARD BOUNDS If you've just had a good time with your friends, the last thing you want is to come to harm on your journey home. When intoxicated, you're more vulnerable to accidents on the way home - especially in the dark. Another risk factor that can't be ignored is drink-driving. Despite hard-hitting campaigns and the fact that it's against the law, some people still can't resist getting behind the wheel after one too many. ough incidents have fallen by more than three-quarters in the last two decades, traffic accidents are still a leading cause of alcohol-related deaths among men aged 16-24. It's not just a case of the drunk driver themselves being in danger too - it puts other road users and pedestrians at risk too. Even if you've just 'had a couple', and your house is just 10 minutes from the pub, alcohol can dramatically impair your vision and reaction times, not to mention making you more likely to speed. TOP TIPPLE TIPS n ere's safety in numbers so try to travel home with a group if you can. Ideally, you'll have planned how you're getting home in advance but it's always a good idea to make sure your phone's topped up and you have

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

licensed taxi numbers to hand should you need them. n Don't drink and drive - or accept a lift with somebody who's been drinking. If you think there's a chance you could be tempted to attempt to drive home, leave the car at home, or ask your friends to confiscate your keys and call you a taxi if it comes to it. HANGOVER HELL Hangovers may be temporary, but they can still make you feel awful. At worse, you'll be stuck in bed all day, unable to stand up without vomiting, your head on fast-spin, or you'll have a thumping headache, tired, bleary eyes and a sore throat. Hangovers are likely to affect your mood too and can leave you feeling gloomy, depressed and anxious. ey don't always pass after 24 hours - you could feel run-down for days, or end up more prone to infections like colds, as getting drunk regularly could give your immune system a battering.

of heavy boozing too. According to Chris Day, professor of liver medicine at Newcastle University, consuming more than eight units a day if you're a man and more than five units a day if you're a woman, for two or three weeks, is enough to cause 'fatty liver' - which happens because alcohol stops the liver from sending fat around the body to be stored, instead causing it to clog up. In the short run, this can be reversed, but carry on boozing to excess and it'll get worse. Binge drinking can also lead to heart problems, including a rapid heartbeat and, in some cases, increased risk of heart attack. ere's also the risk of suffering alcohol poisoning or choking on your own vomit after a very heavy booze binge.

TOP TIPPLE TIPS n If you're concerned about binge drinking, make a plan of action at the start of the night - such as setting a sensible drinks limit and asking your friends to support you in sticking to it. n Abdominal discomforts, feeling sick and loss of appetite can sometimes be signs of 'fatty liver'. See your doctor if you are concerned. n If you or somebody else suddenly becomes severely ill during or after a night out, and you're concerned, seek medical help or even call an ambulance. For more information and advice about responsible drinking visit www.drinkaware.co.uk n

TOP TIPPLE TIPS n Prevention's better than cure - so don't knock 'em back too quickly, alternate booze with soft drinks, and slow down once you've hit the tipsy mark. n Many hangover symptoms are linked to dehydration. "Stay well hydrated during the day to prepare for your night out," advises Dr Emma Derbyshire, nutritionist and consultant to the Natural Hydration Council (naturalhydrationcouncil.org.uk). "Quench thirst with water or juice before you have an alcoholic drink and, at the end of the evening, keep water by your bed and drink whenever you feel thirsty." n Avoid that hair of the dog. Instead, opt for a soluble painkiller to ease headaches and an antacid to settle your stomach. n Fresh air and exercise helps. "Exercise has been linked to the release of endorphins your 'feel good' hormones that will help get you back to yourself again," says Justin Way, personal trainer at Pure Gym. BINGE DRINK DISASTERS While people who drink heavily over a very long period of time are most at risk of serious health consequences such as liver disease, as Drinkaware points out, serious health damage can be caused by short bouts DECEMBER2012 65

F E AT U R E little shocked at my gumption, being just 20 years old at the time. Nonetheless they eventually said yes and I’ve never looked back. At the very core of Apple and imbedded in its DNA was the late Steve Jobs desire to make sure things just work. It seems strange that for so long so many of us blindly accepted poor design, inferior production methods and damn right obtuse interfaces that drove many of us to despair.

Dear Santa...

When it comes to identifying that ‘must have’ product which will top Christmas lists everywhere, the iPad or iPad mini easily earns the top spot. If you were thinking there might be a worthy competitor from an alternative electronic manufacturer then think again. Lets be honest, no-one wants to see their child cry on Christmas morning.

I am of course biased, and have a vested interest in Apple. Still, the truth is universal, and it is universally acknowledged that the Apple iPad is best. It doesn’t matter whether you are buying something for a 5 year old or a 75 year old; the iPad spans generations in a way no previous electronic device ever has. Of course you will still need to decide which iPad or iPad mini to buy and prices range from £399 - £699 for the iPad and £269 – £529 for the iPad mini. You can choose between Wi-Fi only, where you must download content at home (or via a Wi-Fi hot spot) but can play anywhere. Alternative Wi-Fi/Cellular models allow you to download content on-the-go using a mobile data network connection (3,Vodafone, O2 or EE) and this obviously costs money. I’d be cautious of signing long term contracts that tie you in for up to 24 months and which does not include using your iPad abroad without incurring extravagant ‘roaming’ charges. The good news is that the iPad can be used with a 76 DECEMBER2012

Micro ‘Pay As You Go’ SIM.

If this all sounds confusing, that’s because it is. There are subtle differences across the iPad and iPad mini range spanning 24 models in total. Make sure you go to a store that can advise you correctly. My second choice for a Christmas present is the iPod touch. The latest iPod touch is a piece of technical brilliance. Lightweight, slim, tactile and beautifully presented in an array of colours, the iPod touch is fabulous value for money. Priced at £249 - £329 the iPod touch really belies its price and I just can’t think of anything else that is so good for anywhere near the same price. Remember Apple originally catapulted itself to fame and fortune with the iPod and this latest incarnation still delivers smiles every Christmas. The secret to Apple’s success has much to do with how Apple has redefined the user experience; carefully removing all the irrelevant buttons and unnecessary complications that bog down the competition. I only need glance at my collection of old school remotes, an ageing Hi-fi stack held together with a mile of cable and a C:/ Why_wont.*.*u/work operating systems to remind why Apple is the best option. 20 years ago, when I left school, I headed straight to Apple to ask if I could start my own business with them. They were a

Much like ‘The ghost of Christmas past’ I remember a Christmas where Dad was still sweating from an over indulgent portion of Christmas lunch trying to fathom out the Christmas gadget he so readily purchased without realising he’d require a crash course in computer programming. Up and down the country parents found themselves speed reading tiny multilingual booklets, knowing only too well, they were well out of their depth. Consequently glancing around the room in the vain hope they might find someone to ‘pass the parcel’. This brings me to my third choice of Christmas present: the Apple TV. Priced at just £99 the Apple TV is a great Christmas present for the person who already has a Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. The Apple TV plugs straight into your HDTV and joins your existing home Wi-Fi network without the need for a manual. Those clever people at Apple have actually made a Wi-Fi device that works without any unnecessary complications. Apple TV is one of those products that you need to see to really appreciate. Go to a store where you can see it working for yourself. It’s definitely worth a few minutes of your time. In short it integrates your Mac, iPod touch, iPhone and iPad with your TV, wirelessly. Even the wealthiest of James Bond villains doesn’t have as cool a set-up as I have

F E AT U R E your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Mac to the device. Only one device can be paired at a single time but given most of us on the beach don’t have a vast array of equipment with us the Bose SoundLink serves its purpose well.

at home. Admittedly I do not have an enormous shark-filled tank but my Apple TV set-up runs a close second. I can run up to five Apple TVs in my home at once. I can watch five different HD movies in five different rooms at the same time. I can interrupt any of my five Apple TVs whenever I like and simply push content from my iPad to any Apple TV. I can do the same with my MacBook Pro and my wife can use her iPhone or MacBook Pro to control whichever TV she. Prefers. We need never speak again, let alone fight over the remote. It’s worth taking time out to test your internet connection speed before you rush out and buy one or more Apple TVs. I would recommend using www.speedtest. net . This website provides a quick and simple test of your internet speed and so long as you are receiving a 4Mb+ download speed you should be good to go. New fibre optic based internet services from Virgin and BT are best and commonly provide 8Mb+ so it’s worth checking you have the latest, fastest service if you want to feel the full benefit of Apple TV.

of. Supermarkets, PC World, Curry’s and others all have their own “i” brands. As the majority of iPad, iPhone and iPod customers purchase speakers without auditioning them. These retail giants simply push out rubbish products designed to maximise their profits. They appear attractively priced but sound rubbish and often only last until Spring before they make their way to the local rubbish tip along with a mountain of other similar devices.

What I really like about the Bose SoundLink 2 is the fact that Bose make good solid products which are well engineered and well thought out. The Bose SoundLink seems to share some of Apple’s design DNA and features Bose patented sound technology that reproduces excellent quality sound despite its compact size. It’s easy to set-up and features a built in case. When you close the case the music stops and when you open the case, which doubles as a stand, the music starts up again. Simple elegant practical design – brilliant! The Bose SoundLink 2 is priced £249 - £299 and worth every penny.

My final suggestion for a Christmas gift is another wireless speaker system but well deserving of its place here. For years I’ve been waiting for a portable speaker system that I can take with me on holiday, use in the garden and take to the park or beach. Something well built, stylish and that sounds half decent. It’s been a long wait but finally it’s arrived.

So there you have it, five electronic products all of which are either made by Apple or rightfully deserve a place alongside an Apple product. There’s something for almost everyone and every budget. If I was allowed a sixth product, please editor let me have a sixth, I highly recommend either a Wacom Bamboo or Griffin stylus. These devices use a conductive rubber nib that allows you to more accurately draw and write on an iPad or iPad mini. It’s not that I have abnormally fat fingers, I just find drawing with a stylus so much easier and better than with my fingers. Priced £15 - £25 they make great stocking fillers.

The Bose SoundLink 2 relies on a Bluetooth connection for wireless connectivity. This means you must ‘pair’

John Parvin Managing Director of Solutions inc. www.solutions-inc.co.uk

Fourth on my list of cool Christmas presents are the new Bowers & Wilkins speaker systems lead by the New A7, the Zeppelin Air and the A5. Quality wireless speaker systems that have Apple’s Airplay system built-in. This means you can use the Bowers & Wilkins speakers on the same network as one or more Apple TVs, iPod touches, Macs or iPhones. Bowers & Wilkins commitment to Airplay is encouraging as the Zeppelin has in recent years been the most popular choice, least in my own stores, and it’s good to see a British company leading the industry. When it comes to other docking speaker systems, and let’s face it there are hundreds these days, the majority are poor quality systems designed and built by opportunist companies that none of us have ever heard DECEMBER2012 77

STYLE AND VISION

C

Claire Rendall is a leading international furniture and interior designer. Her work stretches from harbour side luxury in Sydney to the Stately Homes of England

laire, who personally designs and oversees each project, has had a diverse career spanning 25 years. She has added her work to some of the finest furniture collections and has also designed for and appeared on BBC 1 showcasing how to create the wow factor using high street goods. But bespoke design is her main passion. “It’s the magic of finding out what the client really wants, translating that into drawings, selecting materials and honing it all into something really special,” she says. Claire and her team never replicate designs, each scheme is unique to a particular client and project. “We’re not brought in to give an off the peg answer,” she says, “We’re brought in to create something special. Something of quality. If something is man made I don’t see why it shouldn’t be the best it can be.” Most recently Claire and her team completed the total refurbishment

80 DECEMBER2012

of an executive harbour side home in Sydney. Taking the whole building back to the brick enabled them to sort out any structural issues, leaks and the like and to rebuild it to an exceptionally high standard. They implemented a complete home automation system to deal with security, lighting, air conditioning, water features and irrigation. It was then rebuilt using 200 year old oak flooring from a tobacco factory in the Loire and ancient carved pillars from the Swat Valley in Pakistan. Internal door frames and skirting boards are solid walnut and the walls are finished in polished plaster. All doors are individually designed veneer inlay with bronze handles. The kitchen, made using burr walnut and ebony, is complimented with book matched marble. “I’m not really excited by kitchens to be honest,” says Claire. “So our approach is different. We make delicious rooms which you can just happen to cook in!”

H OUS E& GA R D E N

External terraces are lined with Egyptian limestone with secreted lighting. Italian glass mosaic lines the magnesium swimming pool. The stunning harbour view is enhanced by frameless bi-fold doors so that the entire front of the building can be folded back, out of sight. The outside dining table has a massive marble top. So much so that the biggest crane in Australia had to be brought in to move it into place. All of the furniture, designed by Claire, was made under close supervision in the UK. “I was extremely proud to be exporting British excellence,” says Claire. “We have some fabulous craftsmen and it’s only right that their work should have an international audience.” “What was so exciting about this project was the opportunity to create a completely clean slate and to design both the interior and exterior,” says Claire. “I remember discussing with Lord Bath the colour of his curtains. He was adamant that he wanted red to contrast with the Capability Brown parkland outside. The interaction of the outside and inside space is often overlooked. But here we were able to follow our design themes

into foliage and exterior lighting.” Drama was created using patinated iron uprisers on the steps to contrast with the limestone and a wall was broken up with panels of etched glass shot through with light and covered with a stream of water. “I love to create theatricality,” says Claire. “I think spaces should be infinitely pleasing and entertaining.” Claire also recreates historic interiors, every detail researched for authenticity from Queen Victoria’s railway carriage to Georgian and Queen Anne country houses. Next is a Lutyens manor house. “I think the Georgian period is my favourite,” says Claire. “I love the size of the rooms and the huge windows. I love the fact that it means you can be traditional or really contemporary. Once you have that perfectly proportioned canvas, everything else is up for grabs!” ■ CONTACT 0207 118 0149 www.clairerendall.com info@clairerendall.com

PLannIng an extenSIon?

L

ondon living can be claustrophobic, so you can never have enough space. Most Londoners move into a new home and start planning an extension or refurbishment right away. At first, it may only be a pipe dream, but the longer you look at your undersized kitchen, with visions of dinner parties and open plan living, the harder it becomes to ignore. But where do you start? It probably feels a bit daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, the extension process can be fairly straight forward. As a full service builder, R&M Lines can manage the project from beginning to end. To start with, you will be provided with a quote and consultation from an experienced estimator. During this stage, you can discuss design ideas, ideal fittings and colour schemes; drafting up an extension that fits seamlessly into both your house and your life. You can also take advantage of your builders’ experience, finding out which materials look better and last longer, which ideas may have difficulty receiving planning permission and any structural elements

you need to consider. The goal is to build an extension that works with and maximises the existing qualities of your home. The same is true for a loft conversion or full refurbishment. Once you’ve ironed out the details, it’s time to submit planning drawings, which R&M Lines provides for free, to your local council. A clearly presented proposal can make all the difference and once your project gains approval, you can move onto the building stage. At this point, R&M Lines will assign a dedicated project manager to supervise your extension. Not only does a single project manager ensure that the extension you ask for is the extension you get, they also make sure that you have the right people working on the right things at the right time, delivering works on-budget and on-schedule. They’ll also do their best to accommodate you at every turn, keeping your home tidy and responding to any requests you might have. You probably don’t have the time required to coordinate builders, plumbers and electricians but with a project manager on the case, with their professional contacts and experience, it’ll be

easy. Additionally, as R&M Lines provide an 18 month guarantee on all works, you won’t have to worry about anything going wrong once they’re out the door. A couple of months down the line, the works will be finished and you’ll have a beautiful new extension; one that you’ll be proud to show friends and family alike. With space to entertain, relax and spend time with your loved ones, you’ll have more ways to enjoy your home than ever before. Plus, if you decide to move, it will only improve the price tag. ■ R&M Lines are a full service builder decorator based in South West London for over 20 years. 0207 978 7840 www.rmlines.com info@rmlines.com

FA M I LY L AW

What’s in a name? There are many reasons why someone might want to change their name. They may wish to disassociate themselves from their past or a former relationship, or leave behind a name that has always caused them embarrassment. Sue Woods, a legal executive at Taylor Walton solicitors discusses the issues and the process involved to change a name. Is permission required? There is nothing in law to prevent an adult from changing their name as many times as they wish, provided it is not done to defraud or deceive. In the case of a child, the position is not so straightforward. Take the fairly common situation where a mother decides to revert to her maiden name following divorce. This does not present any legal difficulties. However, she may then be embarrassed by the fact that she and her child have different surnames. She might start a new relationship and wish to assume the surname of her new partner and for her child to bear his surname. She could remarry and acquire stepchildren and want the children all to bear the same surname. Provided the child’s biological father consents to the change of name, there is no problem. But what happens if the father does not consent? The answer will depend on whether or not the father has Parental Responsibility for the child. If not, then the mother can legally change the child’s name without the father’s consent (although many lawyers and judges hold the view that a child’s name should not be changed unilaterally whatever the circumstance). If the father then objects to the name having been changed, he can apply to the court for an order to reverse the change. Who has Parental Responsibility for a child? The child’s mother automatically has Parental Responsibility, as does a father who is married to the mother at the time of the birth. An unmarried father can acquire Parental Responsibility by:a) entering into an agreement with the mother; b) obtaining a Parental Responsibility Order; c) subsequently marrying the mother or adopting the child; d) obtaining a residence order in respect of the child; e) being registered on the child’s birth certificate (for births registered from 1st December 2003 onwards). Where a father with Parental Responsibility does not consent to the proposed change of name, the mother will need to make an application to the court. This applies even if the mother has a Residence order in her favour. The court will consider not only the practical implications but other issues including the importance of the child maintaining an important link with its biological father. Unless or until a parent is in a position to legally change their child’s name, then the child should not be registered with a school or GP under the proposed new name. 84 DECEMBER2012

What is involved? Once any necessary consent has been obtained, the procedure is relatively simple and inexpensive. A person can simply become known by their new name without the need for any formalities. However, there are likely to be circumstances where evidence is required, for example when applying for a passport, opening a bank account or when required to provide identification for any other purpose. The most common way to formalise a change of name is by Deed Poll or by Statutory Declaration. Deed Poll A Deed of Name Change is drawn up and then signed by the person changing their name, or by their parent, in the presence of a witness. In the case of a British citizen, the Deed may then be enrolled in the Central Office of the Supreme Court. However, there is no legal requirement to enrol a Deed Poll and enrolment does not make the Deed any more legally effective. The advantages of enrolment are certainty, safe custody and the ability to obtain further copies should the Deed be mislaid. Special requirements apply for children over the age of 16. Statutory Declaration A Statutory Declaration is drawn up and then declared before a solicitor, a Commissioner for Oaths or a magistrates’ clerk. Other methods A woman will often assume her husband’s surname upon marriage although she does not have to do so. In certain circumstances, a name can be changed by Act of Parliament or by Royal Licence. If a person intending to change their name is a member of a professional body they should check whether any specific requirements apply. What needs to be done following the change of name? A certified copy of the relevant document should be sent, if applicable, to the DVLA, passport office, Registrar of Companies, banks and building societies and any professional body. Family lawyers are regularly asked to draw up Deeds or Statutory Declarations as evidence of a change of name by a client or on behalf of a child. Subject to any necessary consents being obtained, this can be done simply, quickly and cost effectively. Sue Woods is a senior Legal Executive in the Family Law team at Taylor Walton solicitors, which has offices in Harpenden, Luton and St Albans and provides effective legal solutions to businesses and individuals across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and the South East. Pennywell Manor

A finely polished gem of a home Close your eyes and imagine your perfect home. Even with a vivid imagination you wouldn’t come close Pennywell Manor, in Fortune Lane, Elstree.

D

The kitchen is Poggenpohl fitted with a range of Miele integrated appliances including multifunction ovens, combination microwave, coffee machine, dishwasher, induction hob and integrated full height fridge.

The first thing that strikes you is how bright and expansive the property is. Folding glass doors to the rear and side bring the outside in. In effect, the wall covering is a colourful country vista – there is approaching an acre of land with the manor and protected green belt all around.

The precision; the practical use of the very latest technology; and, above all, the attention to detail at Pennywell Manor, is astonishing.

eveloped by Fusion Residential, winners of the 2011 UK Property Awards, the Manor takes its name from the well that sits near the front door. It has a National Heritage listing and, along with the white wash and timber beams, it hints of pleasures from days gone by. But don’t be deceived – Pennywell Manor is the hi-tech dream home of the future.

And bringing this wonderful home together is the “Smart Home” technology delivered via wall inset iPads allowing remote programming and control of lighting, heating, sound, vision and security.

Pennywell offers are invited in the region of £4.25 million. The wrap-around sun terrace of red cedar deck and giant Italian porcelain tiles allows you to make the most of the south facing garden, sunken water feature and Amir Schlezinger-inspired landscaping. The manor has five double bedrooms, three boasting hand crafted en suites. From the waterproof plasma at the foot of the bath to the walk in showers, this place will leave you in dream land. The basement boasts a gym, steam room and cinema and entertainment room with giant screen and Dolby surround sound. There’s even a built in bar with wine cooler, sink and fridge.
