E D U C A T I O N

Sometimes every parent needs a helping hand in deciding what is best for their children.

Our Education Life series is an invaluable resource for any parent considering private education. Many schools will be having their first open days of 2012 soon.

Encourage your children to come with you and get their feedback after each visit. Take a note book with you and write down positive or negative things that your child brings up. This will be a useful tool when you are comparing notes! It also provides an insight into the

way a child sees a prospective future school. This month sees the first of our three part Education Life series which will also appear in April and September issues.

Welcome to our February issue This stunning Down Hall Country House is nestled in the beautiful rolling countryside on the Hertfordshire and Essex borders. The sweeping driveway leads up to the hotel from the quiet rural roads which surround it. We explore the stunning country house hotel. A spot of tea in the afternoon soaked up with a slice of cake is truly a treat. Its traditionally English roots stemmed from Anna, the Duchess of Bedfordshire who found she was getting hungry at around 4’oclock in the afternoon so she would request for tea, bread and butter along with cakes to be brought to her room. It’s time for afternoon tea at Hanbury Manor.

Flooring and Carpets

When you arrive at St Michael’s Manor Hotel it’s obvious why it is one of Hertfordshire’s most popular wedding venues. The convenience and peacefulness of the five acre garden and the classical building flowing with sympathetic contemporary design simply sells itself. In March, Gaucho will host Gaucho International Polo at London’s O2 arena, uniting high-octane polo interspersed with live world famous music to produce a unique event never seen before in Britain. This gives you just a small taste of exciting events and articles featured in this month’s issue...

WALKS We recommend booking to avoid disappointment. Please note that this tour involves a steep narrow staircase and confined spaces in the cells.

Historic St Albans Covering 1200 years in about 90 minutes, this excellent walk gives an overview of the most important people, buildings and events in St Albans from the Monastic to the modern. Amble in the Shambles This delightful walk round the ancient market place and it’s alleyways is suitable for absolutely everyone as it is in a small level area that is packed with history and interest. What more can we say – it’s a little gem! Victorian St Albans A walk that takes us from the medieval to the age of steam, the railway, factories and even the pioneering days of cinema (hear about the first ever film advertisement!) This was the age of massive expansion for the town, including a new prison whose front entrance will be recognisable to all fans of ‘Porridge’. Aristocrats, Paupers and Philanthropists This enjoyable stroll round the St. Peter’s area features various buildings and charitable institutions they generously gave to the city. Their stories are all quite fascinating – but then some were among the most powerful people in the Kingdom! The War of the Roses Although two battles were fought in St Albans in this dynastic struggle between the houses of Lancaster and York, this walk concentrates on the first one, which took place in and around the marketplace. Hear about the reasons why, the personalities involved and the outcome. There’s even a Shakespearean connection! Come and join the battle – no armour needed! A Pint a Prayer and a Primer St Albans was a centre for the brewing of ale and beer, having a truly remarkable number of inns and alehouses catering for the medieval visitor and trader. Following the Reformation the town became a centre for religious dissent. This walk combines the sacred and the profane in a tour in both existing and former sites. The Street War Memorials The ten street war memorials within the Abbey Parish are unique in the U.K., and are the focus of a profoundly moving walk. Hear the stories behind a few of the 110 names of those who died, from the poor to the privileged, but all from 8 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2

Walking St Albans

City Walks start outside the Old Town Hall in Market Place and take from an hour to an hour and a half. Tickets should preferably be obtained in advance from the Tourist Information Centre inside the Old Town Hall, but may also be purchased from the Guide on duty.

one small area. This walk is always on the nearest Sunday to November 11th, and is always free of charge. It is a walk every local person should do. Town, Crown and Cloister St Albans Abbey was founded by one king and destroyed by another nearly 750 years later, and many monarchs have meddled in the middle! The sometimes uneasy relationship between the crown, the town and the abbey features on this free walk for both Residents First weekend and Heritage Weekend and it is a combined venture between the City and Cathedral Guides to link the inside and outside of the Abbey Church with the town. Ghostly Goings-on An extremely popular and atmospheric walk that introduces some of the ghosts of St Albans and relates their sad stories. We can’t guarantee whom you might see – only where you might find them, for

they do exist! This walk is not suitable for very young children. Crime and Punishment Local crimes ranged from murder in the Cathedral to theft worth two pence, and the punishments were often disproportionately harsh. This walk will take place in the 1831 Courtroom, the two buildings that were prisons in times past and point out the site of such niceties as the stocks and the pillory. Not to be missed for the stout-hearted! Court and Convicted This popular tour of the cells and court room is not for the faint hearted. Feeling brave? Then join a guided tour of the cells beneath the courtroom of the Town Hall. Then follow in the footsteps of prisoners to the courtroom, stand in the dock, face the magistrates and learn your fate! Tickets are limited and can be purchased in advance or on the day.

From Fishpool Street to St Michaels A one thousand year old route that follows George Street, Romeland and Fishpool Street to picturesque St Michael’s Village, with its elegant houses, Saxon Church and the superb Verulamium Museum. It is quite a challenge to guess the ages of the houses in fascinating Fishpool Street – join the guide and see for yourselves! Monks, Mysteries and Mischief Monks were an incredibly diversified and talented band of brothers – theirs was a powerful, self-sufficient community on whom many others depended, but occasionally human failings and weakness would creep in. To find out more, join us on a visit to their world. Tudor St Albans 2009 marks 500 years after the accession of Henry VIII. The Tudor kings and queens played an important part in the history of St Albans. One king closed the monastery which had been the reason for the town’s existence, a queen ordered the burning of a Protestant martyr in Romeland and another queen visited the town frequently to stay with a favourite minister. Find out more about the Tudor connection by taking this new walk with the City and District of St Albans Tour Guides. A Round with Sam Ryder Walk the course of Samuel Ryder’s life. In a journey tracing the remarkable events of one of St Albans most prominent citizens, we walk the length of a golf course and look into his commitment to civic duty. After 18 holes, we finally understand and know the man. A family man, a caring employer, a churchman, a Mayor and yes – the man behind the Ryder Cup. Girls and Boys Come Out to Play This special Festival walk tells the history of St Albans history through Nursery Rhymes for children young and old. Come along and find out about the connection with Humpty Dumpty!

Diamond Jubilee M U S I C S P E C TA C U L A R

P

op legend Sir Paul McCartney will headline a spectacular musical tribute to the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee. The former Beatle will be among a concert line-up that will feature artists from across the 60 years of the monarch’s reign playing in front of Buckingham Palace in June. Securing McCartney for the event’s bill is a major coup for singer Gary Barlow, who is helping to organise the event. Other performers will include Sir Elton John, Sir Tom Jones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Madness, Annie Lennox and Sir Cliff Richard, Jessie J, boy band JLS and singer songwriter Ed Sheeran. The Take That star said: “The Diamond Jubilee concert will celebrate the 60 years of the Queen’s reign with an amazing line-up of world class artists coming together to play at one of the biggest and most exciting live music shows in recent years. With Buckingham Palace as a backdrop, it’s going to be a fantastic event which transcends multiple

decades of music. It’ll be a great, unique, experience for the thousands attending, watching on TV and listening on Radio. I can’t wait.” The concert will take place in front of the palace, with the stage around the Victoria Monument and raised seating for up to 20,000 people - many of the rest from charities covering the flowerbeds around the roundabout. The organisers hope that up to another 500,000 people may throng St James’s and Green Parks and the Mall in the remote chance of catching a glimpse of the show or to watch on giant screens. Those who opt to stay at home can see it live on BBC1 or listen on Radio 2. Gary Barlow said the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry had both requested artists to perform in front of an audience of more than 10,000 that will include the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal Family.” Barlow would not confirm if he or Take That would play on the night but said almost two-thirds of the acts had been

confirmed and he hoped to go beyond Commonwealth artists and have American stars taking part. The musician said he wanted other forms of entertainment such as ballet or performances from the West End to be represented and highlighted how classical acts had already been booked - English tenor Alfie Boe and virtuoso Chinese pianist Lang Lang. A ballot is now open for British residents to apply for 10,000 free tickets for the show. Each successful applicant will be allowed to nominate a guest aged 13 or over, and the ballot is open until 2nd March. Ticket applicants can apply online at bbc.co.uk/ diamondjubilee or on a postcard to The Royal Diamond Jubilee Concert 2012, PO Box 798, Manchester, M60 1WU, between now and 2nd March. Applicants must be over 18 and living at a British (or British forces) postal address, and can apply only once. Those who are successful will be notified by the end of March and tickets will be sent out at the end of May.

ust 60 bottles of a Diamond Jubilee scotch, made by Johnnie Walker distiller Diageo, have been produced for sale, and are being offered to known collectors of rare and expensive whiskies. Another single bottle will be given to the Queen herself. The whisky is a blend of grain and malt whiskies dating back from 1952, and finished in casks made of oak from the Queen’s Sandringham estate. If you don’t have £100,000 to spend and are wondering what it tastes like, the master blender for all Johnnie Walker whiskies, Jim Beveridge, said he is “surprised and delighted” by the way the Jubilee whisky has turned out. “With whisky as old as 60 years, sometimes it can be a bit crusty and the flavours can be a bit subdued. But this one is very vibrant,” he said. “It has a fresh fruity flavour, and a finish which is smoky and also has an exotic fruit taste.” He added that Diageo has whisky stocks dating back 50 years, but for anything older than that there are far fewer to choose from. “1952 was an interesting year for distillers, as the whisky industry started to get back on its feet after the Second World War “ said Mr Beveridge. The whisky was bottled on 7th February in Baccarat crystal decanters, at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery on the edges of the Queen’s Balmoral estate. David Gates, the head of Diageo’s whisky business, said the company originally planned to offer the Diamond Jubilee whisky to wealthy afficionados in Asia Pacific and Latin America, but has now had requests from the US and Europe as well. All profits from the sale of the bottles will go to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST).

he famous London store has opened the Selfridges Library, the heart of Words Words Words - a phrase famously coined by Shakespeare for his Hamlet. The 15,000-book library, set up within the Ultralounge, has been curated by Penguin, Taschen, Faber and Thames and Hudson exclusively for the project. The Selfridges Library’s mission is to offer visitors a special edit of the most inspirational books from each of the four publishers’ historic and contemporary stocks, from fairy tales to biographies and, via Taschen, some of the most breath-taking photography-led books. Amid the comfortable seating, listening posts for audio books and iPads are available for visitors to reach another few more thousands of tomes. A special section of the Selfridges Library will reveal the books which have had the biggest impact on some well-loved celebrities - from Miranda Hart, Poloma Faith and Sophie Dahl, to Felicity Kendal, Olivia Palermo and Thandie Newton - books they would take with them on a desert island or rescue from a fire, all giving some unexpected clues about their inner-self.

Words Words Words The Selfridges Library will also host the Selfridges Library classes, a full schedule of activities staged throughout Words Words Words to include story-telling and poetry classes, lectures, hand-writing analysis. During school holidays, there will be book reading for children every day. Working closely with cult publisher, academy and bookstore The Idler, Selfridges is launching a series of back to basics courses in latin, grammar and Greek

philosophy. The weekly grammar lessons taught by Etonian, Oxford graduate and teacher extraordinaire Nevile Gwynne, whose reputation for exacting standards and oldfashioned but proven methods precedes him, are expected to be most popular - and feared! The Selfridges Library will also mark milestones such as the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, National Story Telling Week and World Book Day - all taking place

during Words Words Words. One more special contributor is another cult brand: It’s Nice That. The Shoreditch-based creative publisher with a passion for design has created four windows for Selfridges the store’s biggest will showcase a mind-boggling installation called Word-A-Coaster, produced in collaboration with interactive designer Stewdio, mixing the principles of the old-fashioned fairground rollercoaster and fortune telling to offer customers a humour-filled way to pick at random one of 30,000 possible predictions for 2012, especially written by It’s Nice That based on their edit of the most interesting, inspiring or funniest adjectives in the Oxford English dictionary. The entirely mechanised installation is operated at the touch of a button and free of charge. Artist Ben Long, and designers Chrissie MacDonald and Gilles Miller are creating another three installations in three nearby windows under the curatorial supervision of It’s Nice That - presenting the word WORDS in three different and creative ways. Gallery Rouge

Announcing an exciting year of exhibitions, events and artist attendances Never one to stand still, it will come as no surprise to learn that Gallery Rouge have a full schedule of events planned for the year ahead. The gallery once again demonstrates its commitment to bringing you the strongest selection of artwork bar none.

Salvador Dali exhibition MARCH 24TH TO 31ST

Following on from their hugely successful ‘Picasso and the School of Paris’ Show held last May, the focus of this event will be on one of the most influential Spanish artists of a generation. Whilst Dali has been described as a maverick and a genius in the same breath, his impact on the modern art movement is unquestionable. Both Dalí’s extraordinary talent and eccentric personality helped him to rise above the rest of the twentieth century surrealists. This is an opportunity to acquire signed limited edition work which would ordinarily be inaccessible.

John-Mark Gleadow exhibition MAY 12TH - 20TH 2012

Hyper realist painter John-Mark has taken the artworld by storm with his stunningly detailed depictions in a book spine cover format. Bridging the gap between portraiture and literature, John-Marks work demonstrates exceptional skill (each piece taking months to create) and the gallery are delighted to be holding his first ever European exhibition. John-Mark will be flying across from the US especially for the event. 2 8 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2

Kal Gajoum exhibition JULY 21ST - 29TH 2012

Following on from his sell-out exhibition in March 2010, Gallery Rouge is delighted to be welcoming Kal back to the UK for a highly anticipated show to be held in central London. Kal’s palette knife oil paintings have become incredibly sought after since his tenure as the Official Artist of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and this event will coincide with the 2012 Summer Olympics. As his exclusive European representatives, Gallery Rouge will be flying Kal Gajoum over from Canada to make a personal appearance and meet with collectors.

Barry Hilton exhibition NOVEMBER 3RD - 11TH 2012

Landscape painter Barry Hilton will be in attendance later in the year with a strong collection of original oil paintings. Barry’s ability to capture atmospheric backdrops has catapulted him to the forefront of the modern landscape genre. Barry will be holding only two exhibitions in 2012, and specifically approached Gallery Rouge, such is the profile of the gallery.

Kerry Darlington exhibition SEPTEMBER 15TH - 23RD 2012

To mark Gallery Rouge’s fifth anniversary they are thrilled to announce that the UK’s top selling artist Kerry Darlington will be coming to the gallery in St Albans. Gallery Rouge held Kerry Darlington’s first ever solo exhibition and this event is in recognition of their special relationship. Due to her work commitments Kerry rarely has time for events, so this is indeed rather special.

Delivering you Exceptional Choice Gallery Rouge has firmly established itself as the place you must visit first should you be looking for artwork for your home or office. The selection of artwork is the largest and widest in Hertfordshire, as the gallery is uniquely positioned in representing work from; DeMontfort Fine Art (who represent household names in Fabian Perez, Henderson Cisz, Doug Hyde, Rolf Harris and Todd White to name but a few) Washington Green Fine Art (representatives of Alexander Miller,

Bob Dylan, Peter Smith, Paul Kenton and Lawrence Coulson amongst others) Buckingham Fine Art (with the hugely popular Kerry Darlington, Barry Hilton, Adam Barsby and Mark Spain) Independent artists from across the UK including David Renshaw, Chris Chapman and Peter Wileman PRIO International artists exclusive to the gallery in Europe including Hessam Abrishami, Bill Mack, Eric Waugh and John-Mark Gleadow. THE GAUCHO INTERNATIONAL POLO

O

n 21st March 2012 Gaucho will host The Gaucho International Polo at London’s O2 arena, uniting high-octane polo interspersed with live world famous music to produce a unique event never seen before in Britain. Following the triumphant inaugural year in 2011, Gaucho International Polo has now evolved into the ultimate celebration of Argentina’s sporting and cultural heritage at the O2 arena. The 2012 event will consist of two international arena polo matches merged with exclusive performances from Grammy award winning band, Bajofondo. Bajofondo, who have put ‘electrotango’ firmly on the world music map will open and play throughout the tournament, creating a thrilling blend of polo and performances. The matches will see Scotland taking on Ireland and culminate in the titanic clash between IG Index’s England and Argentina, pitting Britain’s finest player, Jamie Morrison 3 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2

against the Royals’ favourite star, Nacho Figueras. The Gaucho International Polo will be a true Argentine festival, with tastings from some of the country’s finest wine producers, brought to the event by leading authority, Wines of Argentina. There will also be a fun and charitable twist to the event in the form of “The White Jeans Party’. What to wear to polo matches has often been hotly debated amongst the style conscious, but white jeans are winning in the fashion stakes with enthusiasts such as Prince Harry donning them at matches around the world. In keeping with this, every guest who arrives at the event wearing a pair, a pound will be donated to the BFF (British Forces Foundation). Arena polo is an emerging trend in the polo world and takes place on a smaller pitch with only three players per team rather than the usual four, creating a fast-paced and spectator friendly game. With simpler rules and tickets starting at just £20, it is an accessible way of introducing

Londoners to Argentina’s most celebrated sporting tradition. Combining the best in Argentine food and wine with the sophisticated glamour of Buenos Aires, Gaucho is now not only the ultimate dining destination but an established ambassador for Argentine culture and sport. Gaucho’s UK Operations Director, Martin Williams sums it: “Gaucho are delighted to be working with the HPA to create an annual International Polo match at the O2- I hope that it will grow to rival the success of the former ‘HPA Cartier International Polo’. This year we have created what promises to be an amazing Gaucho Polo Party: The Argentine wine tasting lounge and Bajofondo concert are included in the event and all tickets, while the ‘White Jeans’ charity theme and after-parties will keep the event casual and a lot of fun.” 21st March 2012, Doors open 5.30pm Polo matches start 7.15pm with live performances from Bajofondo throughout Afterparty starts 9.45pm Tickets from £20, through Ticketmaster W: www.gauchopolo.com F: www.facebook.com/Gauchointernationalpolo

Its Time for Tea Afternoon tea events at Hanbury Manor

A spot of tea in the afternoon soaked up with a slice of cake is truly a treat. Its traditionally English roots stemmed from Anna, the Duchess of Bedfordshire who found she was getting hungry at around 4’oclock in the afternoon so she would request for tea, bread and butter along with cakes to be brought to her room. This became a habit and she began inviting her friends to join her and this soon became a socially fashionable occasion through the 1800s. Adopted from the 18th Century, afternoons have once again been dominated with teeming teapots and its fashionable status has been reinstalled. Venues such as Hanbury Manor, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club based in Ware, Hertfordshire offer traditional afternoon tea servings from 2pm starting from £23 per person. The Afternoon Tea’s take place in 3 2 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2

Oak Hall which in the winter is a particularly enchanting room with the roaring fires alight to keep cosy.

The afternoon tea arrangement consists of an extensive tea menu including the traditional English breakfast and Earl Grey to exotic brews from India and China. The tea is served with a three tiered silver stand of dainty finger sandwiches including; ham and cheese on multiseed bread, smoked salmon and cream cheese on granary bread, cucumber on dill bread and egg mayonnaise and cress on white bread, freshly baked raisin and plain scones served with strawberry jam and clotted cream along with cakes and pastries prepared by the pastry chef on the day. With its popularity through 2011, Hanbury Manor has adapted its fabulous traditional Afternoon Tea’s

into themed events that consist of traditional afternoon tea served with a glass of bubbly on arrival and live music throughout to allow you to drift away, relax and unwind while sipping on your favourite cuppa.

For many families, choosing which combination of GCSE subjects for their son or daughter to study can be a daunting experience. Many listen to advice from teachers, talk to other parents and desperately try to apply their own life experience to the decision. Others adopt a more laissez-faire attitude, delegating the choice almost entirely to the person who has to sit the exams. For pupils, it can often be a stressful and confusing time – even before the anxiety of deciding between German and Art is factored into the equation.

For many, choices are motivated by thoughts of undergraduate degree courses and the world of work. It is certainly worth looking at the qualifications needed for certain courses and careers (Medicine, for example, requires Maths and Chemistry, and languages will invariably require students to have studied up to and beyond GCSE), although a surprising number of courses encourage a flexible and varied menu at GCSE.

All students are taught English, Maths and at least one Science up to GCSE. Many schools also add a language to this list of compulsory subjects, and there are other constraints dictated by staff and timetable concerns. It is probably better to avoid pressuring your son or daughter into selections which they do not personally feel suited to. t is one of the more stressful weeks in the life a Headmaster when the Inspectors come to call. The Independent Schools Inspectorate, who have responsibility for visiting independent schools give a week’s notice of their intention to arrive and ask for relevant paperwork to be sent to them immediately. This produces a frisson of excitement for those responsible for the raft of paper work, although thankfully, these days the rain forests are safer given the use of email and electronic media.

The school offers excellent pastoral care, fully supported by policies and procedures and the pupils feel cared for and safe. The importance of the inspection cannot be overstated. This is peer-review, from experienced professionals, most of who have been or are current school leaders. Their findings stay with the school for the next six years, so that three day visit can have a dramatic effect on a school.

Promoting Independent Learning At St. Helen’s girls are encouraged to take an active involvement in their learning as part of a broad education that promotes independent learning and creative thinking. Independent Learning Weeks are a regular feature of the curriculum, enabling girls to work individually, and as part of a team, to produce pieces of work that they can be really proud of by taking control of their own learning. Further up the school

there are opportunities for students to develop their critical thinking skills through activities such as the Year 9 Enquiry project where girls undertake individual student-led research on a topic of their choice.

Sixth Form students can choose to study A Levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which places emphasis on developing the skills needed for university and beyond, focusing

on independent research, critical thinking and active involvement in the community. All students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning through effective planning of their time and a critical approach to their studies.

For All In All At

eechwood Park is a day and weekly boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 – 13 years, located in Markyate, near St Albans, Hertfordshire.

The recently refurbished and enlarged nearby Beechwood Park Montessori Nursery (at Little Cheverells) welcomes children from 3 years. It offers outstanding care by qualified teachers in an idyllic, rural setting with superb facilities.

Amongst the older children flexi and weekly boarding (Monday – Friday) is increasingly popular, it enables boys and girls to experience the lifestyle of a boarder in a smaller, more intimate environment. Children who may have reached the top of their independent junior school but are not quite ready for the full on boarding

regime at a large senior boarding school, can benefit from the transition offered by Beechwood.

A broad, balanced curriculum is well-taught and inspiring, producing an excellent record of exam success and scholarships to a wide range of senior schools. The sports facilities are magnificent and the variety of sports means there is something for everyone.

The creative arts flourish and music provision is second to none. Approximately 300 instrumental/

Beechwood Park

vocal lessons take place each week, with a number of pupils selected to sing in the National Youth Choir; there are several choirs and 17 ensembles, regular concerts and recitals – in addition to flourishing classroom teaching of music. A highlight of the current term was a recital by classical guitarist, Craig Ogden; many of Beechwood’s budding young guitarists who were in the audience were enthralled to be able to watch such an inspiring guitarist at close quarters.

A wide-ranging extra-curricular programme, visiting speakers, and frequent excursions all add to the culturally-rich environment for Beechwood’s pupils.

Sebright Bursaries are available for entry in Year 7. The school is well-served by school buses from several locations and benefits from a uniquely beautiful location in an eighteenth century mansion. Please do come and see for yourself. Open Mornings are held regularly each term but the Headmaster, Patrick Atkinson, is always happy to meet prospective parents at other times. Habs is Exceptional! Following a detailed assessment by the ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate), Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School has recently been judged to be excellent in virtually every aspect of its relationship with its pupils and its community. The school knew that it offered an outstanding educational environment. After all, it has achieved 40% or more A* grades at A level in each of the years that this new distinction has been awarded. However, it was exciting to read the ISI’s conclusion that the school provided an ‘outstanding educational experience’ which allowed its pupils to perform to ‘the highest level of their ability’. Particular attention was drawn to the high quality of the teaching that enabled such spectacular results.

‘I always knew that I and my team of outstanding staff were focused on building a first-rate educational environment,’ noted Headmaster Peter B Hamilton, ‘yet even I would not have dared to expect such an outstanding ISI report. I pay tribute,’ he continued, ‘to the support and direction provided by our entire community of pupils, staff, parents and old boys. Working together,’ he concluded, ‘we have built a school whose pupils go on to lead happy, purposeful, and successful lives. What better start can a school provide to any child?’

More importantly, perhaps, was the praise which the ISI focused on the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of Habs boys. The high standard of pastoral care provided at Habs was particularly noted, which the inspectors claimed played a powerful role in creating what they described as a ‘friendly and supportive school community.’ Furthermore, added the ISI conclusions, this sense of community extended to the parents, judging by the responses received to the parental questionnaire which the ISI undertook.

In Defence of

MEDIA STUDIES BY CHRIS JENKINS, HEAD OF ENGLISH, ALDENHAM SCHOOL

How do we judge whether a subject area is easy or difficult? In Media Studies do pupils really just sit back relax and munch on their popcorn? Education, particularly academic education is about offering the opportunity for students to grapple with new ideas, new concepts and new ways of conceptualising and contextualising the modern world in which they live.

media messages do not need careful deconstruction and decoding only highlight an inability to rise to the challenges and complexities that media texts and debates raise. It is more likely that a Media student will encounter theoretical ideas expounded by: Propp, Saussure, Barthes, Chomsky, Althusser, Todorov, and Maslow than on many traditional courses. Why choose media as an A level course? As David Buckingham has commented, ‘Newspapers have been around for more than 250 years, the cinema for more than 100 and television for more than 60. It seems incredible that we should perish the thought that schools should recognise, and interrogate, their existence.’

Media products are everywhere and it is vitally important that we critically challenge and investigate an area that has an effect on our everyday lives. The power of the Media has been exploited and utilised in the most dramatic of manners. Second World War Propaganda highlights the power of Media messages. Attempts to suggest that Media products are not worthy of critical examination; that Media narratives in a general sense

may be defined as the ‘expression of the imagination’ a line that Shelley used in ‘A Defence of poetry’. It is pleasing to see that at Aldenham we aim to place our students in a greenhouse and not a hot-house environment. Aldenham has a holistic view of education one that offers choice, diversity, an array of options so that students can develop not just minds, but both hearts and minds.

The recent investment and development of the Media Suite with state of the art computers and software does shows perhaps some awareness of the way Educational trends work. At Aldenham we can live with being state of the art. In the 1920s the suggestion that students might study books in their native language, rather than in Greek

or Latin was scandalous. English Literature was the result. In 1960 sociology met with similar derisive remarks. It is pleasing to note that Oxford university sees its Human Science graduates ‘going on to academic and professional training in medicine, genetics, demography, anthropology and sociology’ and that now ‘Cambridge University is one of the world’s leading centres for teaching and research in sociology.’ I hope it will not take these universities 20 years to realise the value of studying media and media products, and it is pleasing to note that Warwick University, in the top flight of British universities offers a course in Film and Television studies. After all Media producers are the unacknowledged legislators of our modern world.

LIFESTYLE

I have helped many people from all walks of life shake off the weight of the financial crisis by boosting their resilience. I show clients how to be flexible and strong enough to overcome challenges and setbacks. They overcome constraints on their performance and build on their competencies to get what they want out of life. Clients who ask about boosting confidence to become more successful are often surprised to hear that the two are not necessarily related. Some of the most successful people on the planet are enormously insecure. That is what has driven them to succeed. Whether they are happy with their lives is another question. So what’s the secret? My individual consultancy helps clients respond to challenges with much greater personal insight. This means practicing clear thinking about themselves, others and circumstances, through a structured process of questioning and action. Here are my five top tips for building resilience: 1. Know yourself

Learn to Bounce Words by

Francine Habib Chartered Psychologist and Coach

and people (‘good’ or ‘bad’) control our feelings about them, which in turn greatly influences our behaviours. We then assume our feelings, behaviours and judgements are facts that cannot be changed. Yet everything can change instantly with a change of perception and a corresponding change of meaning. New meaning alters how we feel about ourselves and the situation.

Self-knowledge is the crucial foundation for constructing resilience. This is the starting point from which to explore your current situation and future choices. Identify dispassionately your strengths, limitations and personal motivations. Observe and reflect on Questions to reflect on: the effect you have on others and how H ow much will it matter in 10 years? that helps you get to your goals. What is the hidden opportunity? Start with these questions: What words describe you at your best and worst? What does a satisfying life look like to you? What has been your biggest disappointment? What are you most proud of? What compliment and criticism do you hear most often? What secret does nobody else know? What motivates you? What makes you anxious?

2. Hold a broad and long-term view of stressful events The judgements we make about events 6 4 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2

ho else has successfully navigated this W experience? H ow did they view it? What skills do you have that can help the situation? What further skills might help and who has those skills already? What has worked for you in the past?

3. Have a plan Most people are spectators to their lives. They may plan their career, their home or even a holiday, yet it never occurs to them to plan their life – it seems too large a project or too vulnerable to the winds of fate. However, if you don’t design your own life plan, you’ll likely end up

in someone else’s plan where your happiness won’t be the priority. Unplanned lives result in people reaching a certain age, reflecting on where they are, and wondering why they’re unsatisfied. The great news is it’s never too late to start planning! With some thought and preparation, you can map out your future your way. There are lots of tools available to help you and it can normally be done in a day. hat do you really want? W Why? What does it look like? How much do you want it? What are the steps for getting it? Would they be any different if you knew you couldn’t fail in your efforts? When you get it, how will you know? What are you willing to sacrifice to get it? What are you not going to give up? What decisions do you face now? What else do you want?

rudder are frequent and the secret is keeping an eye on your destination. It is crucial to monitor your thinking and decision-making so that you don’t over-adjust or talk yourself out of your plan altogether as soon as you’re knocked off course. erify exactly what has changed V Accept circumstances that cannot be changed Take decisive actions Adjust your route rather than your goal Expect good things by putting your competencies and skills in action. Learn how to keep your goal firmly in mind

5. Cut yourself some slack Resilience is a combination of optimism and a sense of confidence that lends us the courage to persevere in the face of challenges. Resilient people also have ups and downs, but their long-term view and clear acknowledgement of their skills helps them to understand that the lows are a phase and will inevitably pass. Not hitting their target with their first shot doesn’t mean they can’t shoot. They just learn from the result to adjust their aim and try again. They inevitably hit their target in the end. Develop/maintain good relationships with your support network of friends and family Learn how to ask for help and get it Improve self-care: exercising regularly, paying attention to your own needs and feelings and engaging in relaxing activities Settle the issues that hold you back. Face up to any self-sabotage and put in place the means to resolve or bypass it Design your own game plan and measure your progress

4. Be ready to change your plan

Increasing your resilience is a process of uncovering how you see yourself in the world and clarifying where you want to be. View events as temporary and make adjustments to a plan of action you’ve created. If you’d like to be able to manage life’s challenges with greater ease, and thrive though the tough times, then start today.

Inevitably there will be external pressures on your plan that have to be considered. Akin to steering a boat to an island, minor adjustments to the

HOUSE & GARDEN

I

have often said that we should emulate the prudent wealthy people of Tudor times who invested their money in tangible things like land, property, decorative arts and items of intrinsic value such as gold and silver. e production of artefacts made of the latter was, by the middle of the 16th century, strictly controlled and as proof of this the Goldsmiths’ Company had instituted a system of marking all items so made which revealed with individual stamps on the surface the quality of the material, the identity of the maker, the place where it was tested and the officer in charge of the testing. As it was an annual office this mark changed each year and, taking its form as a letter of the alphabet, became known as the Letter of the Year Mark or more recently simply the ‘Date Letter’. Originally it was called the Assay Mark - from the French word assai meaning examination - introduced under a statute of 1478 wherein the Goldsmiths’ Company was made liable to a fine if it marked any substandard silver. (A point here is that in this context the term goldsmith applies to silversmiths as well.) In 1545 the fourth mark was added, depicting a lion walking to the left with its right paw raised and known as the Lion Passant. It became known as the Sterling Mark as it took the place of the earlier King’s Mark to denote quality while the latter became recognised as the mark of the London Goldsmiths’ Company and Assay Office. e reason for the change was two-fold. Firstly by the mid 1500’s the coinage had become debased by approximately 50% which meant that a silver crown (5 shillings) had only half a crown’s worth of silver content. To prove the maintained sterling value and quality of wrought plate, that is items made of silver, the Lion Passant mark was introduced. Secondly, by this time and starting as early as 1378, Assay Offices had been established in various parts of the country, particularly at York, Newcastle, Lincoln, Norwich, Bristol, Salisbury and Coventry. While it was imperative that all

silver should be guaranteed to be of the sterling standard and marked as such it was impractical to expect silversmiths from these disparate places to travel to London to have their wares marked and so each adopted a different emblem to equate with the Leopard’s Head of London. All these towns and cities used a letter of the alphabet to identify the Assay Master but they did not all use the same sequence of letters. London used the first twenty letters in the alphabet excluding ‘J’ and when the run was exhausted the typeface or the shape of the background ‘shield’ was changed. In 1560 Queen Elizabeth I restored the value of the coin, a move which set Britain on a steady course to recovery for the best part of 100 years only to be decimated by our civil war (1642 – 1649.) Among the results of this were vast amounts of earlier wrought plate being melted down to pay for it, which in turn caused a shortage of silver for manufacture. Over time this affected the monetary supply to such an extent that by the 1690’s further legislation was necessary. Until the reign of Charles II all our coinage was made by hand, stamped by hammer and die and the edges trimmed with shears. Although trade was often conducted through barter or credit, cash transactions were

common enough and so, before parting with your coins it was only human nature to snip a little bit of the edge of each one. ese little snippets all mounted up - the original ‘every little counts’ – but it had already become a capital offence to clip coins and, with a fake die, forge your own money. However with an increased demand from working silversmiths these scraps could command as high a price as the coins they had been cut from, and with less risk of detection of the crime. So a new type of coinage was called for and a mill was set up in the Tower of London and powered by horses to produce perfectly circular coins. As a belt -and-braces measure an inscription or legend was engraved around the outer edge thereby making illegal clipping virtually impossible. But the authorities failed to see the problem with having both old and new currency in circulation at the same time. Obviously people hung on to the new with its full face value money’s worth, while spending and clipping - the old. Clearly the old coinage had to be withdrawn and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of May 1697 were the final days for collection at the ten furnaces specially built behind the Treasury, which was then at Whitehall between the Banqueting House and the river. For weeks great piles of coins, mostly half face value and barely recognisable had been collected, melted down and cast into ingots. In one instance some £52,000 of face value coins were melted to produce just over half that amount of silver worth. But distribution of the new coins was slow and while all this was going on another factor became evident; the value of coin clippings to silversmiths had to betaken out of the equation. is was done by raising the silver content of wrought plate to a level above that of coin. Not by so much as to make the material too soft for use and durability but sufficient to be detected by the assay. e figures were a raise from 92.5% pure to 95.84% pure. It was known at first as the New Sterling Standard but – as it

was denoted by a stamp showing the figure of Britannia – it soon became known as the Britannia Standard. is mark replaced the Lion Passant mark and in London the Leopard’s Head was replaced by a mark showing a Lion’s Head in profile, facing to the left with a jagged neckline as if torn from its body. Heraldically this is called ‘erased’ and so the Britannia Standard in London is denoted by the Britannia mark and the Lion’s Head Erased. In all other towns and cities the Lion’s Head Erased is used in addition to their town mark. From 1697 until 1720 the Britannia Standard was obligatory but in the latter year the economy in England had recovered sufficiently for the government to restore the old Sterling Standard while retaining the Britannia Standard as an option which it remains to the present day. In the early days of the maker’s mark, people were less literate and initials meant little or nothing to most, so symbols were commonly used. ese might be a miniature image of the shop or tavern sign where the silversmith had his workshop, such as leathern bottle or a swan, a star or crescent moon. By the 17th century we see the first two letters of the surname being used and by the beginning of the 18th century the silversmith’s initials gradually became the norm. From the 1720’s it can be said without question that the manufacture and sale of English silver was the most proficiently run and tightly controlled of all industries, with the welfare and benefit of manufacturer, supplier and purchaser held in equal esteem. e four marks as described filled every requirement and would surely have survived unaided save for a change in taxation in the 1780’s and the Convention Hallmarks introduced in the 1970’s, nearly two hundred years later. When we’ve dealt with them we really will get onto the silver from the Channel Isles, Scotland, Ireland and other desirable categories where the present day equivalent of the prudent Tudor person should still be putting their money ■

HOUSE & GARDEN

With the imminent arrival of baby Billy to their growing family, Beks and Jolyon Nott had just the incentive they needed to put their extension plans into action. But they had to work fast.

A F A M I LY PROJECT W hen the Notts moved to their two bedroom house in Teddington it was the perfect antidote to their previously hectic Wandsworth lifestyle. “We really liked the village feel of Teddington and its proximity to Bushy Park, the river and Kingston.” Beks recalls. A year passed quickly however and with a young child and finding herself pregnant for the second time, it wasn’t long before they needed even more space. “We considered moving but the costs involved would mean we had to move out of an area we loved.” Other houses in the street had converted their unused loft space so they knew it was possible. “My husband (a designer) set about drawing up our own plans” Beks comments. “We wanted to maximise space by fitting in two bedrooms and a shower room.” After getting quotes from local builders, the Notts chose L&E (Lofts and Extensions) to realise their vision. “We invited L&E round after seeing a case study in our local magazine” Beks remembers. They were surprised to find L&E offered the best value of all the builders “Even on first meeting, we really trusted them. The payment plan was very clear with no pressure to pay each stage until we were completely happy. The surveyor and foreman just seemed like our sort of people. It’s also nice to support local business as that’s part of the appeal in a place with such a sense of community.” With just over 10 weeks to go until Beks’ due date, L&E began the build. Within six days they had the shell up and the property watertight. “Progress was so rapid; we couldn’t quite believe it ourselves.” With so many builders about and living on a terraced street, Beks was concerned about the disruption to neighbours. “I needn’t have worried. Our neighbours even commented on how tidy and how polite the whole team were. They took great pride in their work and were respectful of the fact we were still living in the house.” Work progressed quickly, with the main part of the build

7 4 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2

being completed in just less than 4 weeks. With Jolyon at work and Beks heavily pregnant they were able to rely on their foreman to project manage the build. “My husband is used to dealing with contractors but we didn’t need too much involvement as our foreman was in control and when the need arose was always available to discuss any issues.” The team completed the project in the nick of time. “They told us the job would take 9 to 10 weeks and they cleared everything out on the 10th week exactly on schedule.” Billy arrived four days later and was able to move straight into his newly created bedroom. “That wasn’t the last we saw of them however,” Beks recalls “as they brought round a bottle of champagne, a card from the team and their congratulations soon after we arrived home!” With the conversion complete, they now have both the bedroom and bathroom space they longed for. “We are thrilled. The final result means that we can stay in this house which we love, at a fraction of the cost of moving home. We have doubled our upstairs space meaning that we can have people to stay while at the same time giving the children their very own rooms. That alone makes a big difference.” Mr and Mrs Nott are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing. L&E (Lofts and Extensions), The Old Office Block, 16 Elmtree Road, Teddington, TW11 8ST. PROPER TY

Majestically ensconced at the heart of Wall Hall, Aldenham, is the iconic ‘Mansion House’, formerly the home of eminent dignitaries including Joseph Kennedy. Latterly renovated and reconfigured by Octagon Developments Ltd around five years ago, whilst constructing their award-winning masterpiece creation of 125 homes, this idyllic property is peacefully surrounded by parkland, golf course and greenbelt countryside. The Mansion House retains many original features, both inside and out, including imposing front entrance with hammer-beam ceiling and original panelling, but now has the added convenience of secure, underground parking with personal lift access to the communal hallway. Now comprising seven highly individual homes within this grand building, one of the generously appointed apartments, occupying ground, first and second floors with basement ‘office’, has just come to the market.

Originally the south wing, each room overlooks its own private garden and affords stunning views across the tranquil countryside setting. The present owners have reconfigured the former layout, installing a bespoke ‘Mark Wilkinson’ beautifully crafted kitchen/diner of some 29’ x 23’ to a former reception with floor to ceiling windows on two sides, leading through to the spacious sitting room of a further 26’ x 23’ – again, featuring twin floor to

ceiling French doors to garden. In keeping with this stylish and contemporary layout, the apartment now boasts a cinema room, and the original ‘silver vault’ basement, is the study. Occupying the first floor and approached by sweeping staircase, are the three principle bedroom suites, with the Master enjoying double aspect windows, built in bespoke wardrobes, and over-sized luxury bathroom. The Guest Suite is indulged with walk-in dressing room leading to

bathroom, and Bedroom 3 extends to 18’ x 17’10 with spacious ensuite bathroom. For added convenience, a fully fitted utility room is tucked away at the end of this floor. Continuing upwards to the second floor, Bedroom 4 measures approximately 24’ x 24’ – embraced as a Games Room, with added advantage of ensuite bathroom and storage. Rarely available, a truly outstanding and expansive home offering tremendous living and entertaining accommodation, lavishly presented throughout, with every attention to detail for today’s modern lifestyle.

Guide price £3.5m.
