The de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre - the best kept secret in Hertfordshire A Brief History of Salisbury Hall and the Site of The de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Collection.

he site of the Hall and the Museum is, without doubt, a very old one. It is close to the first century BC settlement of Wheathamstead, the major Roman town of Verulanium and St. Albans which is of late Saxon foundation. Early notable (but unwelcome!) visitors to the area were probably Julius Caesar in 54BC, and Boadicea of the Iceni in 61AD. During the early 9th century the site was part of the Manor of Shenleybury. It was held by Asgar the Stallar, who was probably a high official to the Wessex King Egbert. After the Norman Conquest the Manor passed to the de Mandeville family who held it when the Doomsday Book was written in 1086. In 1380 the Hall passed in marriage to Sir John Montague, later Earl of Salisbury. It is perhaps at this time that the Manor acquired its now familiar name of Salisbury Hall. About 1420 Alice, Countess of Salisbury, married Sir Richard Neville, who became Earl of Warwick. He had two sons, Richard Neville (better known as Warwick the Kingmaker) and John, Marquis of Montagu, who were both killed at the Battle of Barnet in April 1471. A new house was built about 1507 by Sir John Cutte, Treasurer to King Henry VII and Henry VIII. The house was purchased in 1668 by James Hoare, a London banker. At this time the present house was built, bringing with it associations with Charles II and Nell Gwynne, who lived in a cottage by the bridge to the Hall. Her ghost is one that is said to have been seen in the Hall. The Hall passed to Sir Jeremy Snow’s nephew, John Snell, and from then through various hands, and during the latter

part of the 19th century was occupied by a succession of farmers. However, about 1905 Lady Randolph Churchill, as Mrs. Cornwallis West, came here to live. Her son, Winston Churchill, became a regular visitor. During the 1930s Sir Nigel Gresley, of the London and North Eastern Railway, was in residence. He was responsible for the A4 Pacific Steam Locomotives one of which, Mallard, holds the world speed record for steam locomotives of 126.5 mph. Rumour has it that the name came from the ducks in the moat. In September 1939 the de Havilland Aircraft Company established the Mosquito design team in the Hall, the Prototype Mosquito, E0234/W4050, subsequently being built in the adjacent buildings. Nell Gwynne’s cottage was the centre of a silk worm farm, which supplied the silk for Her Majesty the Queen’s wedding and Coronation robes. Yet another royal connection. De Havillands left in 1947 and the Hall slipped into a derelict condition. However, in 1955 the Hall was taken in hand by an ex Royal Marine Major named Walter Goldsmith who restored it and opened it up to the public. He brought back the prototype Mosquito, E0234/W4050, as one of the attractions in 1959, an action which led to the establishment of the Mosquito Aircraft Museum. Walter Goldsmith sold the Hall in 1981 and since then it has been restored to a very high standard and remains in private ownership to this day.

Cromer Windmill Hertfordshire’s sole surviving post mill, Cromer Windmill dates from 1679/81 and was in use until 1923. After many years of restoration work, the mill is now open to the public.

Dacorum Heritage Trust The Trust acts as the museum organisation for the Borough of Dacorum and operates a museum store in Berkhamsted. The Trust organises displays drawn from its collections at different venues around Dacorum.

Datchworth Museum Displays about the history of the village housed in a former blacksmith’s shop, which

Housed in a building designed by Harry Parker the museum tells the story of the Garden City Movement from it origins to the present day. The Temporary Exhibiition Programme explores the social history of Letchworth Garden City from 1903.

The Forge Museum, Much Hadham There is a working blacksmith on site and a beautiful Victorian Cottage Garden behind the museum, which was the village forge from 1811 to 1983.

Hertford Museum Located in a 17th century town house with a recreated Jacobean knot garden. There are extensive century-old collections, mainly local history, as well as temporary exhibitions and resources for schools.

Hitchin Museum and Art Gallery Displays include a reconstructed Victorian chemist’s shop and a costume gallery. The museum has a changing temporary exhibition programme and holds regular events. There is also a garden of medicinal plants.

Knebworth House This has been the home of the Lytton family since 1490 and successive generations have contributed to the building, décor and contents. It has also been used as a film location, including Wayne Manor in the first Batman film.

Letchworth Museum and Art Gallery Includes displays on natural history and archaeology, particularly the Iron Age and Roman period. The fine art collection concentrates on local artists and contains many works by William Ratcliffe. There is a regular programme of temporary exhibitions.

Lowewood Museum, Hoddesdon Displays include artefacts, photographs and pictures relating to the history of the Borough of Broxbourne.

Mill Green Museum A working 18th century watermill, situated in an attractive riverside setting. The adjoining museum has displays on local history and archaeology.

Museum of St. Albans The story of historic St. Albans from the departure of the Romans to the present day. There is a special exhibition programme and a wildlife garden.

Potters Bar Museum The museum tells the story of Potters Bar from prehistory to the 1950s. A new exhibition on an aspect of local history is displayed twice a year.

Royston and District Museum & Art Gallery The museum includes displays of local history from the Stone Age to the present day. It also exhibits an excellent collection of 20th century ceramics, the Royston Tapestry and work by local artists.

Scott’s Grotto, Ware An enchanting 18th century grotto built

by the Quaker poet John Scott. The Grotto was visited by many famous people of the time, including Dr. Johnson. There is also an octagonal summerhouse on the hill above the grotto.

Shaw’s Corner, Ayot St. Lawrence The home of George Bernard Shaw from 1906 until his death in 1950. The atmospheric rooms remain much as he left them and contain many of his literary and personal effects.

Stevenage Museum The story of Stevenage and its people. Displays include a Roman coin hoard and a computer challenge about the New Town.

Three Rivers Museum, Rickmansworth A collection from the Three Rivers District, including archaeology, Second World War memorabilia and local photographs.

Veni Vidi Verulamium, St. Albans Discover the secrets of Roman Verulamium with Veni Vidi Verulamium. Roman Britains, archaeologists & modern school children take you for a walk in the park, telling stories of daily life in Roman times, the excavations and artefacts in the Museum. ‘Inside Abbey Road: The Best Studio In The World’ Abbey Road Studios announce new talks in Studio Two, open to the public in March 2013 “Abbey Road has led the way, pioneered and inspired, and this event proves how pivotal Abbey Road Studios is to the music we love” The Londonist Following the glowing public response to the series of unique events held at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios earlier this year, they are pleased to announce ‘Inside Abbey Road: The Best Studio In The World’ - a new series of talks to be held in the famous Studio Two during March 2013. Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan (authors of the critically acclaimed, definitive book ‘Recording the Beatles’), will give their second series of fascinating and enjoyable talks on Abbey Road Studios’ rich history and continued success at the forefront of today’s music. They will explore the studios’ decades of landmark recordings, celebrating the technology and sonic creativity that lead to epoch-defining music from fêted artists such as Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Adele and of course, The Beatles. With over 20 years of research into EMI history, they have uncovered many secrets and have worked with Abbey Road to preserve and illuminate the Studios’ immense history and ongoing legacy. port will be high on your child’s list of priorities when it comes to senior schools! You will understand that sport plays a pivotal role in child development. Sport develops teamwork and confidence through mastering new skills. It helps form fast friendships and the habit of participation. It is the key to a healthy lifestyle. The relaxation it provides may be a crucial antidote in years to come to the fierce pressures that are the norm in many careers. Your child will grow through sport and discover a source of joy and passion that can last a lifetime. So consider: does the school have a sporting ethos in which fair play, as well as excellence is considered an important aspect of education? Has it the sort of talented coaches that can inspire and pass on skills and disciplines to youngsters? Does it provide opportunities for your child to develop as a sportsman across a wide range of sports? At the elite end, are there students playing at county, regional and national level? Are there academic PE options at GSCE and A-Level that can open up career opportunities in performance, psychology and the business of sport: marketing, sports media, and research? Is sport delivered primarily by the PE staff or does the whole school commit to games, with all pupils and staff are out on the pitches together? ‘Whole school games’ has several advantages. It allows the pupils to see subject teachers as more than narrow specialists. It promotes warm pupil-teacher relations. It provides children with admirable role models who share their enthusiasms. It also makes it far easier to recruit external coaches to support the outstanding specialist teachers. Some schools focus on high-end performance; others – like Taylors’ - provide a ‘developmental’ approach, focused on participation for the younger children and developing that into performance for the older ones. All boys (even the not particularly “sporty”) find something they can enjoy that

becomes part of the fabric of their lives. This breadth is complemented by an ethos that includes increasing the number of pupils representing their county, region or indeed performing in national squads. “Facilities” are secondary – look at Bradman or Pelé! If a school really wants to offer rowing, equestrianism, golf, fencing, fives, windsurfing, swimming, croquet, sailing, and sub-aqua sports - it will! Most schools offer competitive sport to all pupils. How many teams are put out? What range of sports is offered (individual and team)? Will your child get a game? Is the approach ‘win at all costs’ or a developmental one? Children learn nothing from a 10-0 drubbing. They learn very little from a 10 wicket victory. Check out the fixture list. Is it the same as a few years ago? A dynamic sports school will not rest easy on its laurels and retain traditional fixtures if they result in embarrassingly easy wins. Look for a school that develops its fixture list so that the children may at first experience narrow defeat against strong opposition, but then be motivated by this to raise the bar so that their confidence, skills and performance improve year-on. Many schools offer scholarships for sport. What does their scholars’ programme actually offer? The best programmes support and improve high level youngsters and also encompass all-rounders and specialists. They focus on supporting and improving the pupil – not the school’s results! Taylors’ has a dynamic programme where scholars enjoy additional classes including yoga and ballet – for strength and conditioning. A personal mentor meets each scholar weekly to review progress and discuss performance. Sport is a common language that cuts across social and national divides and provides life-changing experiences. Pupils learn respect, adherence to a set of rules, to win modestly and lose with dignity. Few lives are failure-free and the resilience that a child needs to overcome life’s knockbacks and go on to success is often first learned on the sports field.

A wealth of opportunity AT EDGE GROVE

It has been a typically busy time at Edge Grove over the past few months, following the arrival last Autumn of the new Headmaster, Ben Evans. At Edge Grove life is never dull and in their busy day the children share a wealth of opportunity. This is particularly evident from the success of the new ‘After School Activities Programme’ that runs every day in two sessions from 4pm until 6pm, and also on Saturday mornings. The majority of pupils in Years 3-8 are participating in the programme and enjoying a wide range of activities, such as Chamber Choir, Horse riding, Mandarin, LAMDA, Chess, Taekwondo and many more. There really is something for everyone! Many trips have recently taken place, including an Art trip to the V&A, a Geography trip to the Natural History Museum, and an outing to Tring Zoological Museum. The U11 and U13 netball teams recently enjoyed a

weekend tour to Brighton and a ski trip to Italy is planned for March. Sport remains a key aspect of life at Edge Grove and the school is thrilled to be the IAPS National 6-aside Soccer Champions for the second year in a row. Table Tennis continues to be popular with both U11 boys and girls now through to the Southern Region Final in the Butterfly National School Team Championships. Other recent highlights include a wonderfully entertaining production of ‘Bugsy’ in December, showcasing the popularity for drama at Edge Grove. The school achieved second place at the National Prep Schools Key Stage 2 General Knowledge Championship 2012-2013; participated in the Young Voices concert at the O2; and the Chamber Choir have reached the finals of the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition and will be singing at the Barbican in March.

ust seven years old! There I was, armed with a large turquoise painted trunk and a wooden tuck box, and dressed in my grey flannel blazer and cap, deposited at my prep school. It all seemed like a great adventure; the stuff you read about in books, but for me it was now real. Yes, it was to be two and a half weeks before I saw my parents again. It was the second evening when it sank in. I had endured lessons – they didn’t feature in the adventure books; I realised that I was away from home, and I would be for the next two and a half weeks (minus the day and a half that had been covered). I was homesick! This was, however, the first and last time that I was homesick. Instead, I look back fondly upon my time as a boarder; the opportunities were phenomenal. It has only been recently that I have discovered another side to this coin. I had only seen things from my perspective; I was a child and adults are good at concealing their true feelings. However, as time has passed, my mother has admitted how difficult she found sending me away to school and I had been totally unaware of this. Given these emotions one wondered why they took the decisive step that I should board. But they were quite unequivocal; they felt they were doing the best for me, and this involved significant sacrifice on their part. Looking back, I am extremely grateful for the opportunities. For any parent, the thought of sending a child away to school must invoke an extraordinary diversity of responses and emotions. The love for a child means that parting the child from a parent can feel like a mini-bereavement, particularly when the child is young. A Boarding education presents a wealth of opportunities, not only in terms of facilities and encouraging independence, but also in social interaction and the demands of personal organisation. Now as Assistant Head at Beechwood Park, a leading, co-educational preparatory day, weekly and flexi-boarding school situated near St Albans, Hertfordshire, and having also been Head of Boarding, I recognise the paradox of contrasting feelings when the concept of ‘boarding’ arises. There’s the child who waxes lyrical about the experience, the parent whose lips quiver at the thought, and there are cases where parents have different views on whether or not their child should board. Given such conflicting emotions, is there a compromise? A perfect solution? Many schools acknowledge these juxtapositions; boarding has changed. Boarding no longer means packing a child off to school for weeks on end.

There is a happy medium - ‘flexi-boarding’ - which can take different forms. The flexi-boarding model at Beechwood Park is as follows: children choose to board two, three or four nights a week; they can choose which weekday nights and these need not be consecutive. Each boarder has their own bed and can personalise their area. The nights they board can change weekly, fitting in with what is convenient and helpful for parents. Some parents view it as a rather luxurious form of babysitting! The word ‘choose’ above is appropriate, but may seem surprising. It is the children who are desperate to board; they choose! Children are welcome to board weekly, but on nights when they are not boarding they go home just as the day children. So why do these children choose to board when there is no necessity and, one might suggest, no logical reason? Just as children look forward to having a sleepover with their friends, they look forward to boarding. But boarding offers so much more than a sleepover! Yes, there is homework, but staff members are always available to help. Some children opt to board on nights when they have more difficult preps so they can seek ‘expert’ help. After homework is finished, there is a huge range of activities on offer to the children, including football and rounders, to more peculiar options such as ‘Escape from Colditz’, ‘Stuck in the Sahara’ and ‘Great Balls of Fire’. To find out what fun this organised mayhem really is you need to board at Beechwood! After activities, before bedtime there’s the chance to use the Games and Common Rooms, or enjoy toast and hot chocolate. It’s at this time that one observes particularly the laughter, camaraderie and friendship amongst boarders; no surprise, therefore, that it is the children themselves who are so keen to board. The model clearly works for children, but does it work for parents? Would this have helped my mother in her sadness over sending me away to school? Some parents struggle with children boarding consecutive nights. Children often ask to board more and parental response can be ‘I couldn’t bare the thought of being away from you.’ There are distinct positives for parents; with the flexible system, parents change the nights their children board each week. It would appear that there is a solution to the boarding dilemma: an answer which satisfies the demands and emotions of parents and children alike, and which enables the advantages of a boarding education whilst removing what may be regarded as the disadvantages for many.

Beechwood Park School for the Best Possible Start

nother busy term has recently ended at Beechwood Park – the day, weekly and flexi-boarding preparatory school for girls and boys aged 4 – 13 situated in Markyate, near St Albans. Once again it has been full of new challenges and a wide variety of achievements by

the pupils. For the first time ever Beechwood Park entered a team of young mathematicians for the annual Prep Schools Maths Competition at Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood and they won the trophy by beating 13 other local preparatory schools. Also for the first time pupils from Year 4 through to Year 8 have been taking part in the Mangahigh Maths Challenge, and came fifth out of 900 schools in the British Isles. This is an outstanding achievement. Inspired by the summer’s Olympics pupils participated in a number of new sports. For instance the IAPS Sailing Regatta was added to the fixture list and a talented team of young table tennis players came third in the Hertfordshire

County Table Tennis Championships. Pupils have also notched up notable successes in golf, swimming, rugby, hockey, netball, fencing, trampolining and martial arts. Excursions, workshops and talks by visiting experts take place frequently at the school. These add to the culturally rich environment at Beechwood Park, where 140 pupils took external music examinations during the term. The school benefits from a beautiful parkland setting in an eighteenth century mansion. A visit is strongly recommended. The Headmaster, Patrick Atkinson, is always happy to meet prospective parents. It is worth taking a step back to review how parents can best support their children through the daunting process of UCAS applications, and ultimately achieve the university place of their choice.

Participating in such activities demonstrates a willingness to get involved, an aptitude for tackling complex challenges, and a social awareness of the world around them; all qualities expected by university admissions teams.

Instilling the right attitudes and approach is paramount in achieving success. This is one of the many strengths of the independent school system. Academic excellence is a crucial factor as university offers are conditional on achieving specific results. At interview, however, intellectual rigour and curiosity will help your child stand out from the crowd. The independent system fosters that from day one, encouraging students to go beyond the basic curriculum, discover their own interests in the world and pursue them. Students can devise their own coursework titles, choose additional languages, and undertake contemporary scientific research simply unavailable to them elsewhere. Having the support and resources to make these choices increases their value as a prospective undergraduate.

Many independent schools offer dedicated careers teams, who will discuss your child’s university options, enabling them to make the best choices possible for their future success and happiness. As your child progresses through the public examination years, having someone to guide them through their choice of subjects can make or break their application. The most competitive courses - Law, Medicine, and Economics - require you to take a specific set of A Levels just to apply. Excellent pastoral care can also ensure the whole UCAS process won’t seem as daunting. Students often receive one-to-one attention from tutors who know them personally, producing stronger and more successful applications.

Independent schools also help develop intellectual independence and encourage students to have the confidence to articulate their opinions, particularly in the Sixth Form. This can make a noticeable difference when students attend interviews. They are better informed, more relaxed and self-assured than other candidates.

Choosing an independent school means more than ensuring your child has access to the best facilities and educational support, it is an investment in their future that will develop the life-skills they will need for future successes, and greatly increase their chance of securing a place at a coveted university.

An ‘excellent’ inspection for Aldenham School

elebrations are the order of the day for staff and pupils at Aldenham School in Elstree, having gained the top ISI grade - excellent - in every single category. This follows an integrated inspection of both the Senior and the Prep School by the Independent Schools Inspectorate which was published in December 2012. The Report commends both areas of the School for enabling pupils to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives; highlighting the excellent start to children in the Early Years Foundation Stage, through to “the excellent academic achievement and outstanding levels of personal development” enjoyed by all pupils in the School so that they attain “the character and skills to meet the challenges of life beyond school, exemplified by high levels of selfconfidence and mutual respect.” The team of eleven Inspectors recognised the great strengths of the whole School, highlighting in particular the atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding between teachers and pupils. The School was also praised for its outstanding links with parents and the wider community. The effective learning in the Prep School fulfils its aims outstandingly well to stand its pupils in good stead as they prepare to move to the next stage in their schooling.

Aston Martin launches global celebrations marking a century of success

ondon marked the start of a year-long celebration of all things Aston Martin, with a ceremony in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews – the original home of the company that went on to become Aston Martin, founded on 15th January 1913. Joining with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust to unveil a commemorative plaque, the sports car maker is lining up a special centenary edition of its new ultimate GT – the Vanquish – alongside the oldest Aston Martin in existence, A3. The event recalls the day 100 years ago when founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford saw their new automotive venture incorporated as ‘Bamford and

Martin Ltd’. Production of the very first Aston Martin car, known as ‘Coal Scuttle’ commenced soon after. The ‘Aston’ element was inspired by Lionel Martin’s passion for hill climb competitions, in particular the Aston Clinton hill climb in Buckinghamshire. Aston Martin CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “I am proud to be celebrating 100 years of heritage and the best of British craftsmanship. “Aston Martin is known around the world for our leading design combined with advanced technology. This highlight of the centenary celebrations will be held in partnership with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and the Aston Martin Owners Club and will feature 100 of the brand’s most iconic cars in a multi-million pound timeline display. The event will also see one of the largest gatherings of Aston Martins in the 100-year history of the great British marque. It’s all About the Cocktail Dress You likely don’t have the six-figure budget or 13-person glam squad that your favourite stars do, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look stunning. Celeb stylist Phillip Bloch — who wrote The Shopping Diet: Spend Less & Get More— says that it’s really all about the dress, anyway. “Have a cocktail dress always at the ready,” he advises. “Cocktail has become the new black tie, so you can always get away with a cute little black dress. part? You don’t have to spend a fortune on it. “With Facebook photo tagging, real women can’t always wear the same exact dress twice anymore,” he says. “Find clothes that are transformational. Don’t buy something you will only wear once. Know what you can do with it afterwards.” Draw a Line Between Sexy and tarty There’s nothing wrong with being sexy or seductive, but you don’t want to look tarty. To avoid showing too much skin with your dress, as with your makeup, be sure you are playing up one feature and not all of them. If you have a high slit, we advise against doing a plunging neckline. If you have a backless dress, keep the hemline from creeping up too high. If nothing else, show your shoulders. That’s a great feature on anyone. Think before opting for a skintight frock. If you go with a ‘standing dress,’ you might not be able to dance, sit, or eat. Don’t Overdo the Makeup You may think that this is the time to go all-out

with your makeup. Whatever you do, don’t. “This is not the time to try something new, like 12-inch fake eyelashes … A little bit goes a long way” Bloch says, adding that you should pick one thing that’s easy to finesse but doesn’t require constant upkeep. “Bold red lips are great, but don’t do this and a smoky eye. Pick one. You only want to take a lip gloss and maybe some mascara with you, so know your limits.” Ying Chu, Marie Claire’s beauty director, offers up a great trick for intensifying your eyes for photos without looking overly made up: “Take a black kohl pencil and dot it along your lash line, between your eyelashes, before applying mascara.” Go for Some Killer Heels Always wear a heel when venturing to a party, noting Gwyneth Paltrow’s penchant for wearing sky-high seven-inchers. The higher the better. Platforms are the easiest in this set to walk in, but test them out in advance — wear them around the house for a couple hours — to make sure you can stand and walk in them without toppling over. Also, make sure the shoes are padded so they are a bit more comfortable. If You Can’t, Opt for a Wedge If you know you won’t make it two steps without a rolled ankle in stilettos, wedges are a good compromise. They are obviously more comfortable, or you can go with a thicker heel. In rare cases, flats work. A flat works really well with a ball gown or a full skirt, but it doesn’t look chic with a fitted dress or, say, a mermaid silhouette.” And make it a jeweled sandal, not just a flip flop. The sooner they’re operated on, the easier they are to remove Unsightly bulging veins, aching legs, swollen ankles, itchy skin at the ankles, and ulcers that will not heal are all signs of underlying venous problems. These days, early treatment is both effective and long lasting. Gone are the days of ‘stripping’ veins with extensive bruising and weeks off work. continues to advance with techniques becoming less invasive, and with a quicker return to normal activity. Most techniques can now be undertaken under ‘twilight’ anaesthetic (sedation combined with local anaesthetic). These latest techniques start with assessing the problems within the veins, determining the source and extent, and then undertaking endoluminal ablation – the favoured alternative to the old ‘stripping’ technique – of the offending veins, where lasers are used to obliterate them. Some other treatments are still evolving so they are not offered as ‘first line’, but can be undertaken after due consideration. All techniques are offered at Spire Bushey Hospital in Watford.
