London Design Festival CELEBRATES A DECADE OF DESIGN
“From our sleek and fabulous New Bus for London to the iconic golden beauty of the Olympic torch, the design industry is a crucial part of London’s vibrancy as well as its success and future prosperity. That is why I am delighted to be backing the London Design Festival, which is an unrivalled showcase of some of the best creative ideas from the UK and around the world.” BORIS JOHNSON, MAYOR OF LONDON
This September sees the London Design Festival, one of the most important events on the global design calendar, mark its tenth anniversary. Conceived by Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans, the Festival was originally designed to pay tribute to the capital’s creativity and innovation; ten years later, this aim has been achieved beyond all expectations. “It is especially exciting to be staging the 10th London Design Festival in September during the year of the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee,” says John Sorrell. “Over the last 10 years, we 1 0 J U LY 2 0 1 2
have grown the Festival across the world’s creative capital and this year, the Festival will be better than ever as we join in the celebrations and put the spotlight on design.” Since 2003, the Festival has been responsible for showcasing a range of exciting and ambitious projects, from installations in London’s public spaces to commissioned projects, highlighting emerging talent, in museums and galleries. Year on year, the Festival has evolved and developed in terms of its partners and its audience with 2011 seeing over 300 separate events and projects in London as
part of the ten-day celebration. For 2012, a year when the global spotlight is firmly on London, the Festival is delighted to present a programme that will more than equal the quality, imagination and innovation that it has demonstrated for the last decade. “The London Design Festival continues to present design in new ways to an ever expanding audience. FIFTY YEARS OF BOND STYLE AT THE BARBICAN The white bikini worn by Ursula Andress in one of cinema’s most celebrated scenes, joins more than 400 Bond archive items for the first time in a new and highly anticipated Barbican exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise from 1962’s Dr No to this year’s Skyfall. The items are displayed alongside those which they later inspired – the orange bikini worn by Halle Berry in Die Another Day and Daniel Craig’s sky blue trunks from Casino Royale, and are among 400 works comprising the Designing 007 - Fifty Years of Bond Style exhibition which is open at London’s Barbican Centre. With unprecedented access to EON’s production archive, Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style is a multi-sensory experience where screen icons, costumes, production design, automobiles, gadgets, special effects, graphic design, exotic locations, weapons, stunts and props combine to immerse the audience in the creation and development of Bond style over its auspicious 50 year history.

OPEN AIR THEATRE

ith over 130,000 visitors each season, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is now an essential part of summer in the city and, in 2012, with the eyes of the world on London, a destination for visitors from around the world. Celebrating this remarkable year, the theatre is presenting a repertory season of two major productions.
Now playing in repertory until 8th September 2012, Timothy Sheader has directed Ragtime, the contemporary musical based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow; Olivier Award winner Javier de Frutos is choreographing. Matthew Dunster is directing Shakespeare’s most magical of plays A Midsummer Night’s Dream until 5th September 2012, suitable for age 11+. Ragtime the Musical has a book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. This powerful musical, set at the turn of the 20th century, unites three families separated by race and destiny. The 1996 Broadway production won four Tony Awards including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. Designer Jon Bausor has worked with Sheader and Dunster on Ragtime the Musical, following his acclaimed set designs for Lord of the Flies and The Crucible. Laura Hopkins has designed the costumes for both productions. Laura’s previous credits include Shoes (Sadlers Wells) A Delicate Balance (Almeida) and Black Watch (National Theatre Scotland) as well as productions at the RSC and National Theatre. Artistic Director, Timothy Sheader, said: “What has proved exciting at Regent’s Park over the past few years are productions that embrace scale, both physically and in their narrative. The titles for 2012, each with their own particular ambition, are united in their exploration of space, light and the changing atmosphere of theatre in the open air.” 1 6 J U LY 2 0 1 2
Sheader and Executive Director, William Village, have overseen four seasons at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, each of which has, in turn, broken the record for attendance and Box Office takings. Their productions of Hello, Dolly! (2009) and Into the Woods (2010) both won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival with Hello, Dolly! also picking up the Evening Standard Award for Best Musical.
Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s 2011 production of Crazy for You received three nominations for the 2012 Olivier Awards including Best Musical Revival, Best Costume Design for Peter McKintosh and Best Theatre Choreography for Stephen Mear. The production transferred directly to the West End, where it played until 17 March. 115,494 people saw the show which ran for a total of 30 weeks across both venues. Beyond the Park, Timothy Sheader and Liam Steel are co-directing Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods at New York’s Delacorte Theater, Central Park, this summer. Based on the 2010 Olivier Award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production, this new Public Theater production features an entirely American cast.

Salon Privé is delighted to be able to unearth this rare collection of Gulf cars from Adrian Hamilton’s country house in Hampshire, and bring them to Syon Park on full public view together for the very first time. These cars, instantly recognisable from their iconic sky blue and orange livery, stretch right back from 1967 (the 1967 Mirage was the first Gulf-liveried

In a year when Her Majesty The Queen celebrates the 60-year Diamond Jubilee, the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing is also celebrating its own 60th anniversary in the public eye, and will be on display in all its glory at Syon Park this September. Named because of its unusual “Gullwing” upwards lifting doors, the car was initially conceived as a purpose-built racing sports car and went on to achieve immediate iconic status – as evidenced by 2011’s equally striking tribute SLS, also exhibited at Salon Privé in 2012. There will also be a special exhibit dedicated to memorable cars from the movies, including some rare

Pall Mall Today
Set in the heart of St James’s, the Pall Mall clubhouse provides a welcome sanctuary away from the bustle of Central London, in which members and their guests can relax. In all its Edwardian splendour, the high ceilings, rich carpets and ornate plasterwork, as well as a fine collection of art, help create a contemporary experience set within the luxurious and comfortable surroundings of a traditional club. The clubhouse provides a fine choice of restaurants, lounges and bars with décor and menus that range from opulence to relaxed to meet every member’s requirements. In 2007 The Great Gallery restaurant enjoyed a metamorphosis with its lavish use of gold leaf, a hand-blocked wood floor inspired by Pavlovsk Palace in St. Petersburg and a series of murals by artist Catherine Lovegrove. The unused terrace beyond became a splendid topiary-filled oasis for al fresco dining and, when smoking became outlawed, the Smoking Room also underwent a transformation. Now known as the Club Room, it retains a cheerful informality as regulars
sip tea and play chess in an awe-inspiring interior that was described in Country Life as ‘English Palladian style at its most sumptuously architectural’. The room boasts a ceiling and frieze modelled on the old War Office that stood at 89 Pall Mall before the Club was built. Members and guests can unwind in leather armchairs, take tea and sandwiches or a drink, play backgammon or chess, read a daily paper or a book from the well stocked clubhouse library. The elegant Cocktail Bar and Art Deco inspired Brooklands Room, a smaller and more informal brasserie-style restaurant rarely have a spare table and for member functions, there are six impressive private dining and meeting rooms allowing for all kinds of events, from intimate dinners and small private meetings to the very grandest receptions for up to 450 people. The exceptional sports facilities include a well-equipped gym, unique Turkish baths for male, female and mixed days, squash courts, billiards tables, treatments rooms and the famous marble columned swimming pool is the training ground for many a dedicated swimmer. Out of town members benefit from the use of its 84 en-suite rooms and full housekeeping services, while the business centre and library provide the latest technology to members away from their offices. The History of the Pall Mall Clubhouse
The purpose built Pall Mall clubhouse took three years to complete. Responsible for the work were the famed architects Messrs. Mewes and Davis, who numbered the nearby Ritz amongst their achievements. Together they pioneered a steel structure as an internal framework and utilised every new scientific innovation available at the time, electric and hydraulic lifts, central heating and air conditioning, 120 telephone lines, gas flares to illuminate the front of the building and even electric lighting. Eventually opening in March 1911, at a cost of £250,000, a Vanity Fair article of the era described the clubhouse as being ‘on a scale of grandeur absolutely unparalleled anywhere.’ The Committee convened in the new clubhouse for the long-awaited opening, but half of them got lost in the vast new building and needed guides. The interiors were equally as impressive, as were the views over London, from Nelson’s Column to Buckingham Palace. Opulent French Renaissance style décor, Doric colonnades in the central vestibule and fine paintings, all added to the splendour. In total the clubhouse contained 258 rooms, including a library, photographic studio, barbers and hairdressers, bedrooms, waiting rooms, assembly rooms, committee rooms and smoking rooms. Dining has always been central, with the original Great Gallery able to accommodate up to 500 people. Unsurpassed recreation and sporting facilities have also been a constant, with card tables, a billiard-saloon, fencing, gymnasium, a rifle range and even a bowling alley. Squash courts and a Turkish Bath were also installed, but the piece de resistance was the swimming pool with its mosaic columns, white Sicilian marble walls and bronze balconies overlooking the shimmering green water. It is even rumoured that Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret learned to swim in the pool at the Club.
Woodcote Park Today
Woodcote Park is a 350-acre estate set in the Epsom Downs, just 16 miles from Pall Mall. The handsome red brick mansion retains the style and atmosphere of a great country house and is the perfect place for members looking to escape urban life. Gold enthusiasts can enjoy two 182 6 J U LY 2 0 1 2
hole parkland golf courses - members can play on payment of a green fee. This is complemented by other sports facilities, including a 30-metre indoor swimming pool, four squash courts, six floodlit tennis courts, a modern gymnasium and a croquet lawn. The Boston Room, Woodcote Park’s newly refurbished main restaurant, offers the best in British and international cuisine served in formal but stylish surroundings. Completely transformed with a new menu and interior, the Boston Room is the place to go to sample the finest ingredients that Britain has to offer; succulent beef from the Castle of Mey in Scotland or free range chicken from Laverstoke Park in Hampshire. Cooked using techniques from around the world to give the dining experience a truly cosmopolitan feel. the Derby rooM
Derby Day is perhaps the highlight of Woodcote’s social and sporting calendar, but the Derby Room itself, can be used for many other occasions during the year, including dinners, luncheons, wedding receptions and conferences. It can also be used for small dances in conjunction with its smaller neighbour the Oaks Room. the oaks rooM
Named after the other June Classic run over the Epsom Downs course, the Oaks room, like the Derby Room beside it, has fine views over the Woodcote golf courses. This intimate corner room, on the first floor, is regularly used by Members to entertain smaller parties of friends, family or business colleagues. 22 bedrooms, including 1 suite, offer a very high standard of accommodation. The prestigious entertaining rooms and banqueting facilities make Woodcote Park an impressive venue for garden and drinks parties, wedding receptions, residential conferences and business meetings. The grounds can also be utilised for team activities such as archery, laser clay shooting and country pursuits. The History of Woodcote Park
In 1913 Woodcote Park near Epsom racecourse was purchased as a Country Club to compliment the Pall Mall clubhouse. Located on the site of a historic 12thCentury abbey, it was a mansion built in 1679 by Richard Evelyn (brother of diarist John), and mentioned

in his diaries by Samuel Pepys. Barely had the ink dried on the documents when the First World War was declared, and both clubhouses were put at the disposal of the armed services. In 1934, Woodcote Park was razed to the ground by fire, re-opening only 21 months later in May 1936. World War II saw the country club assume a new role, a training centre for thousands of troops with the grounds ploughed for agricultural purposes. In August 1940 a Hawker Hurricane made a forced landing in the golf course. The British pilot was helped into the Clubhouse for medical assistance, having first proved his nationality by waving a packet of ‘Players’ cigarettes at golfers in the vicinity. The intervening years saw the country clubhouse firmly establish itself as a social and golfing haven for members and guests, with two 18-hole parkland golf courses, the Coronation and the Old Course. In the 1980s investment was needed to bring Woodcote Park up to date; around £5 million pounds was invested in refurbishing and equipping the country clubhouse with a sports complex, Cedars, indoor swimming pool, squash and tennis courts. Today Woodcote Park remains a hub for members looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of London.
Motoring History
From the advent of the horseless carriage to the age of the stretch limousine, the Royal Automobile Club has been the ‘Parliament of Motoring.’ The Royal Automobile Club, Britain’s oldest and most influential motoring organisation, was born out of a shared love of motoring and a dedication to preserving the rights and best interests of motorists over 100 years ago. Founded in 1897 by Frederick Richard Simms, assisted by Charles Harrington Moore, the Club’s history mirrors that of motoring itself: In 1896 the restrictive Red Flag Act, that had required a man to walk in front of every vehicle, was repealed, the birth of motoring in the UK. The Emancipation Run, the precursor to today’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, was organised to celebrate the passing of the Locomotives on the Highways Act. In 1900, Claude Johnson organised the ‘Thousand Mile Trial’, putting British motoring on the map. Three years later, the Club vigorously campaigned for the Motor Act, having long had the interests of the private motorist at heart. This Act increased speed limits and removed other restrictive legislation. 1905 and the Club organised the first Tourist Trophy (TT) race, today the oldest
motoring race regularly run. In the same year the Club became the governing body for motor sport in Britain and introduced driving certificates, a responsibility which was not to be taken over by the government for another thirty years. In 1911 the Club turnover rose to £970,000 from £385,000 the previous year, as a result of a huge influx of new members, all paying 25 guineas a head to join and an annual subscription fee of 10 guineas. In 1943 Lord Mountbatten became the Club’s President. From the 1950’s to 1960’s the British car industry began to suffer from overseas competition and inefficiencies and the Club’s main rival the AA began to modernise and consolidate its service to members. Despite this the clubhouse itself continued to prosper. After Lord Mountbatten’s assassination by the IRA in 1979, Prince Michael of Kent became President of the Club. 1991 saw the formation of the RAC Foundation for Motoring. Long before that the Club, through its Public Policy Committee, had become a respected voice in the formulation of government policy on roads and motorised transport. This was recognized and strengthened by the formation, in 1991, of the RAC Foundation for Motoring, a registered charity. RAC Motoring Services Ltd, which offered roadside assistance and many other benefits to over 5½ million associate members, was sold by the Club in 1999 to the Lex Group, and later passed to Aviva, the insurance company formerly known as Norwich Union. 1999 also saw a very new era for the Club as ladies were admitted as members in their own right! Present Day
Overseen by the Club’s Motoring Committee, the Club continues to own and maintain a unique fleet of veteran and historic vehicles and runs a number of annual events including the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which commemorates the Emancipation Run of 1896. It is the longest running motoring event, with people coming from all over the world annually to view over 500 cars dating from before 1905. Members can participate in a range of varied motoring related events whilst the Committee continues to foster links and relationships with industry and the wider motoring world. Recent award winners at the Club have included Lewis Hamilton, James Toseland, and the legendary Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Stirling Moss famous motoring names of recent decades. J U LY 2 0 1 2 2 7

CULINARY PERFECTION
at the Lake Restaurant, St Michaels Manor
It’s no surprise that The Lake Restaurant is one of the very few restaurants in Hertfordshire to be awarded two dining rosettes and was also voted “Best Restaurant in St Albans” by Hardens (Restaurant) Guide. However, it is a surprise that so few people know how good it really is; apart from, that is, the masses of regulars it attracts... maybe they want to keep the secret to themselves? Perhaps it’s the unfounded perception that St Michael’s Manor Hotel is too “grand” or that a restaurant in a hotel just “doesn’t feel right”… how wrong could that be? At only £21 for a fabulous three course meal*, including coffee, you can enjoy arguably the best restaurant views in the county; very little else offers this sort of value for money these days. The brasserie-style Lake Menu was conceived in January 2009 as a shortened version of the popular A La Carte menu and offers a choice of three dishes per course. This allows the hotel to showcase its creative 2 8 J U LY 2 0 1 2
and versatile kitchen emphasizing the use of local, organic and seasonal ingredients. There’s always a vegetarian choice on each course; for example a beef tomato and goats cheese tartlet followed by a vegetable pot au feu, and a regular choice of a fish and meat dish to cater for every taste; try the luxury fisherman’s pie or braised lamb provencale with spring onion mash. Desserts are a must with the long serving pastry chef being let loose to create an amazing range of crème brulées and traditional English puds, or you could settle for good old cheese and biscuits with home made St Michael’s Chutney. Be quick though as The Lake Menu changes
every week so check it regularly as it’s always a great surprise.
You’ll never be disappointed with the A La Carte menu either. A broader selection than the Lake Menu with, among the tasty starters; game terrine of pheasant, pigeon and foie gras mousse with apple and shallot chutney or seared scallops with pea purée, black pudding and vierge dressing. Main courses include, amongst others, Duo of Duck: confit leg with toasted pine nut, five spice crusted breast with caramelized apple pain d’epice mille feuille, beetroot fondant and Jura jus, Black bream and Maine lobster
chowder with caviar linguine or Confit pork belly with Chorizo, wild mushroom and butterbean fricassée. The venue is also extremely popular for Cream Teas that are enjoyed in the conservatory style restaurant, lounges, bar and outside on the patio; all enjoying views of the magnificent five acre private garden, incorporating it’s own large lake. Sitting on the lawns or lakeside are always popular eating spots in the glorious weather. The atmosphere in the restaurant is always at its best when busy, no more so than on Sundays, which are nearly always a sell-out. What better place to enjoy a relaxed and lazy lunch with incredible food in a great setting. The hotel has food available all day whether it’s breakfast, bar snacks, teas, casual or A La Carte dining and prides itself on a high level of service whilst being relaxed and informal. Booking is usually recommended and the web site www.stmichaelsmanor.com is extremely informative.

HITCHIN LAVENDER
SUMMER SCENTS FOR THE NGS
Hitchin Lavender at Cadwell Farm, Ickleford is a step back into the social and agricultural history of lavender growing in Hertfordshire. The lavender industry was widely spread, developing only in the few areas in the UK where the local topography and climate favoured cultivation of this fragrant shrub.

FEATURE
n towns such as Hitchin, Sutton, Mitcham and Carshalton, lavender farming was behind a mini ‘gold rush’ in the 18th and 19th centuries. With demand driven by perfume companies such as Yardley and Potter & Moore, whose product ranges were based almost entirely on lavender, the industry centred on these small towns expanded at a rapid rate. By the mid 20th century, the industry ultimately became a victim of its own success. Local prosperity had created larger populations that demanded more space for housing, which in turn resulted in prime lavender growing land being given over to supply these. Alongside this, fashions and tastes in perfume changed and eau de cologne began to replace lavender water as the scent of choice. The final blow was delivered by competition: cheaper imports of lavender from France began to reduce the demand for locally grown flowers and the fragrant cycle of boom and bust was almost complete. It has been many years since the perfume of lavender hung heavily across the gentle hills of Hertfordshire, but thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of the Hunter family at Cadwell Farm, diversification from a purely arable operation came in the form of lavender back in 2000 and now acres of purple haze are once again spreading across the fields. Hitchin Lavender is situated on Greensand Ridge, a distinct geological feature, stretching from Buckinghamshire to Cambridgeshire, which was laid down on the bed of a former ocean and now rises from the
clay vales on either side. It offers free-draining soil and and exposed windy aspect, which combine to create the perfect conditions for cultivation of this drought-tolerant Mediterranean woody shrub. At least 10 varieties of lavender are grown here now, coming into full and beautiful flower from mid June to mid August. Visitors to Hitchin Lavender have the freedom to wander among the hypnotic undulations of richly hued lavender flowers that ripple in bulbous rows gently up the slope and picking a small bunch to take home is actively encouraged. Nature surrounds the fields – the flowering shrubs are alive with bees, hoverflies and other pollinating insects, birdsong from the hedgerows and surrounding copses echoes out across the fields and groups of swifts can be seen feeding on the wing low over the picnic site. An annual harvest of flower heads is distilled to extract the essential oils with antiseptic, soothing and relaxing aromatic qualities, and this is used as the base for products such as soaps, hand lotions, bath salts and candles, which are sold alongside lavender bags and pot pourri in the 17th barn shop. Hitchin Lavender at Cadwell Farm opens for the National Gardens Scheme on Monday 30 July from 5–9pm, admission £4. For more information on this and other NGS Open Gardens, go to www.ngs.org.uk. Giant Olympic Rings have been unveiled at Heathrow, the Host Airport of the Games, to help provide a spectacular visual welcome to athletes and visitors during London 2012. Along with plenty of excitement and an incredible atmosphere, the Olympic Games will bring thousands of visitors to London and the UK. This means the transport system will be extremely busy – so if you’re going to a London 2012 sports event or ceremony, it’s important to plan and book your journey well in advance. There is no spectator parking at London 2012 venues, except for a limited number of Blue badge spaces that must be booked in advance – so we recommend you go by public transport, or in many cases, walking to a London 2012 venue is much quicker and easier than you may think. 1948 OLYMPICS LONDON
The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in London, England. After a 12-year hiatus because of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics since the 1936 Games in Berlin. This was the second occasion that London had hosted the Olympic Games, having previously been the venue in 1908. Britain almost handed the 1948 games to the USA due to post-war financial and rationing problems, but King George

said this could be the chance to restore Britain from World War II. London will be the first city to host the Olympics for the record third time when London hosts the 2012 Summer Olympics.
expensive; athletes were therefore housed in existing accommodation. Male competitors stayed at RAF camps in Uxbridge, West Drayton and Richmond; female competitors in London colleges.
At the time of the Games, food, petrol and building rationing was still in place in Britain; because of this, the 1948 Olympics came to be known as the “Austerity Games”. Athletes were given increased rations, the same as those received by dockers and miners, which meant 5,467 calories a day, instead of the normal 2,600. Building an Olympic Village was deemed too
The Games opened on 29th July 1948. Army bands began playing at 2pm for 85,000 spectators in Wembley Stadium. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, with Queen Mary and other members of the Royal Family arrived at 2.45pm. The competitors then entered the stadium in a procession that took 50 minutes. When the United Kingdom had passed
the saluting base, Lord Burghley began his welcome: Your Majesty: The hour has struck. A visionary dream has today become a glorious reality. At the end of the worldwide struggle in 1945, many institutions and associations were found to have withered and only the strongest had survived. How, many wondered, had the great Olympic Movement prospered? After welcoming the athletes to two weeks of “keen but friendly rivalry”, he said London represented a “warm flame of hope for a better understanding in the world which has burned so low.”
LONDON OLYMPICS 2012
At 4pm, the King declared the Games open, 2,500 pigeons were set free and the Olympic Flag raised. The Royal Horse Artillery sounded a 21-gun salute and the last runner in the Torch Relay ran a lap of the track and climbed the steps to the Olympic cauldron. After saluting the crowd, he turned and lit the flame. After more speeches, Donald Finlay of the British team took the Olympic Oath on behalf of all competitors. The National Anthem was sung and the massed athletes turned and marched out of the stadium, led by Greece, tailed by Britain. A record 59 nations were represented by 4,104 athletes, 3,714 men and 390 women, in 19 sport disciplines. Because of
their roles as aggressors in World War II, Germany and Japan were not invited to participate; the USSR were invited but chose not to send any athletes. The United States team won the most total medals, 84, and the most gold medals, 38. Great Britain won 23 medals, three of them gold.

E N I L R I A S THE EMIRATE BOARDING PASSES READY AS FIRST EMIRATES AIR LINE FLIGHT TAKES OFF A brand new way to travel across the Thames is the Emirates Air Line – the UK’s first ever urban cable car. The innovative addition to the capital’s transport network provides a muchneeded new river crossing in east London, affording spectacular bird’s eye views of the city. The 34 cabins provide 360 degree views taking in the City, Canary Wharf, historic Greenwich, the Thames Barrier and the Olympic Park. Having taken just under a year to complete main construction works, the Emirates Air Line has a cable span of 1,100 metres boasting three soaring helix towers. Passengers can cross the River Thames travelling at heights of 90 metres between two brand new terminals (Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks), improving connections between two world class attractions – the O2 and ExCeL, whilst in close proximity to existing Tube and DLR systems. The Emirates Air Line is a key part of the Mayor’s ambitious plans to revitalise east London, driving economic growth and supporting jobs. It will open up access to the Royal Docks Enterprise Zone and play a key part in attracting businesses and investors to the area. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “The Emirates Air Line is a stunning addition to London’s transport network, providing a much needed new connection across the Thames. I am sure the Emirates Air Line is now set to be a must-see destination in its own right, giving people the chance to drink in breath-taking panoramic views. We said we could deliver this travel link in quick time, and we have shown that this city is capable of attracting serious investment to deliver world class infrastructure. As the world’s eyes focus on our city, I can think of no better message to send out across the globe.” Last year the Mayor secured a £36m, ten year sponsorship deal with Emirates, one of the world’s 4 8 J U LY 2 0 1 2
leading airlines, covering the vast majority of the scheme’s construction costs. The Emirates Air Line provides a brand new river crossing in east London which can be used by pedestrians, wheelchair users and cyclists. They can board one of the 34 cabins from the new terminals, Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks, every 30 seconds. The Emirates Air Line knits into London’s existing transport network providing an interchange with the Jubilee line and Docklands Light Railway. It will be open seven days a week and passengers can buy their boarding passes from vending machines or the ticket offices at both Terminals. Passengers will be able to touch in at the gates with their Oyster pay as you go cards to take a flight. There is a ‘frequent flyer’ boarding pass for regular users, which will allow them to make 10 single journeys for £16, equating to just £1.60 per single journey. The frequent flyer boarding pass will appeal to people living or working in the local area who wish to use the Emirates Air Line on a regular basis. A single fare boarding pass using Oyster pay as you go will cost £3.20 (child fare £1.60). Passengers with a Travelcard or other Oyster cards (including Freedom Passes) will be able to fly for the same fare but will need to buy a boarding pass from ticket offices or vending machines. For those who want the experience of an extended journey to enjoy the fantastic views there will be the option to take a non-stop return journey. This ‘360 degree tour’ will cost £6.40 with Oyster. Journey times during commuter hours (7am – 10am and 3pm to 9pm during the summer) are approximately five minutes. TfL recognises that some visitors will want to experience the journey for as long as possible so the scheme will operate at slower speeds during non-commuter periods meaning a single journey could last up to 10 minutes.

JESSICA ENNIS
Heptathlete Jessica Ennis, 26, is the face of Olay Essentials. Q: DESCRIBE YOUR DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE? I’m training pretty much every day so it’s important for me to keep my skin clean and hydrated. I’ll start off by cleansing my skin in the morning with a smoothing scrub you can use in the shower. Then I’ll always protect my skin with an SPF as a lot of my training is outdoors. The Olay Essentials Complete Care SPF30 is ideal as it’s really light so doesn’t clog my pores and make me sweat more.

Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek 24h Frizz Fighter, £4.49
VICTORIA PENDLETON Track cyclist Victoria Pendleton, 31, is the face of Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek. Q: WHAT’S YOUR MAKE-UP MANTRA? It’s always been important to me to look good when I’m racing. I even like to have painted nails when I ride. I like the saying, ‘Look good, feel good, go good!’ I definitely think looking good helps you feel more confident so I’ll wear a little mascara, tinted moisturiser and lip balm. I always reapply before getting up on the podium. Q: WHICH AREAS REALLY SUFFER BECAUSE OF YOUR SPORT? Training with a helmet on every day means my hair is prone to a lot of frizz so I need a haircare regime that helps protect against helmet hair! I love to leave in a hydrating smoothing product after washing like Pantene’s Smooth & Sleek 24h Frizz Fighter to combat any frizziness. Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY
PRODUCTS? I love Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream or Neom Organics Moroccan Blush Rose Oil for some indulgent pampering. In my make-up bag I rely on Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF20, By Terry Touche Veloutee highlighting concealer and Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy.
Q: BEING A WATER BABY, HOW DOES THE POOL AFFECT YOUR SKIN? My beauty regime is quite easy. Because I’m a swimmer the chlorine can really make my skin dry so afterwards I shower, exfoliate my face and then moisturise. When I get home from training it’s just a case of applying some more moisturiser and a slick of mascara and then I feel a little bit more girly again. Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO PAMPER YOURSELF? I love to paint my fingernails and toes when I’m watching TV. Being in the pool all day isn’t very glamorous so it’s nice to treat myself when I’m not training. Dior nail polish in Blue Label is my current favourite but I have to keep my nails short to avoid scratching other swimmers in the pool. Q: WHAT ARE YOUR
MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I love using Bliss Lemon + Sage Body Scrub because it smells so fresh and leaves my skin feeling pampered. I reach for Aussie 3 Minute Miracle deep conditioner twice a week to keep my hair soft, shiny and conditioned. Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MAKEUP TRICK? I would never go for false lashes but if you wiggle a mascara brush from the root of your lashes up to the top you can really plump your eyelashes. I apply a few coats of Max Factor’s False Lash Effect Gold Edition Mascara for real ‘wow’ impact. When it’s on I’m often surprised they’re my own lashes! Q: ANY PLANS FOR A PREOLYMPICS MAKEOVER? I’m planning on having some exciting nails for the Olympics. I love experimenting with nail polish colours. Max Factor False Lash Effect Gold Edition Mascara, £10.99
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE TO ACCENTUATE FOR A NIGHT OUT? My hair, of course! It’s crammed into a hot helmet pretty much every day so when I’m glamming up, I love to really make my hair stand out. Q: ANY PLANS FOR A PREOLYMPICS MAKEOVER? I’ll definitely have a trim before the Olympics, go for a facial and have my nails done. I certainly won’t have much time to pamper myself during the Games! J U LY 2 0 1 2 5 7

STRETCH MARK REMOVAL USING CARBOXYTHERAPY & CELLULITE REMOVAL USING VELASHAPE
DR. ARIEL HAUS Has Solutions To Restore Your Body This Summer
D
r Ariel Haus is an expert using Carboxytherapy and has used this procedure in his Brazilian clinic for over 10 years. In the UK Dr Haus has just unveiled treatments using Carboxytherapy specifically targeting Stretch Marks. Dr Haus’ Harley Street clinic already offers Carboxytherapy treatments combating dark under eye bags and these have proved very popular. Carboxytherapy involves the injection of a small amount of carbon dioxide gas just beneath the skin’s surface and it delivers results by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Carbon dioxide is produced by the body naturally, and should not be confused with the potentially fatal carbon monoxide. Carboxytherapy is a popular choice for the treatment of stretch marks on the stomach and legs. Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or weight gain (e.g. pregnancy or rapid gain of fat). Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with pregnancy. A minimally-invasive treatment that is virtually painless, it can be done in around 5 minutes. Following treatment the skin texture will improve. Between 6-12 Carboxytherapy treatments are usually required for stretch marks, all spaced one week apart. This is a treatment that is suitable for all skin types and involves no downtime following the treatment. Carboxytherapy dates back to the 1930s and by using this additional carbon dioxide the body recovers from poor blood flow and in turn the body reacts by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Another great summer bikini season solution is VelaShape. VelaShape II combines gentle light and radio frequency energies (elōs™) with mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to manipulate the

The heat from the light and RF energies increases metabolism of this fatty layer and shrinks the size of fat cells. The mechanical rollers and vacuum suction act on the blood vessels to increase circulation to the local area,
as well as massaging the skin to achieve a smoother, less dimpled surface appearance. elaShape II offers a gradual improvement of cellulite in treated areas, firmer and tighter skin surfaces are also reported. 4-6 sessions are initially recommended over the space of just over a week. Maintenance treatments are done once a month. Treatment is safe and effective. Dr Ariel Haus is registered as a medical practitioner in Brazil, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The specific non-invasive cosmetic treatments that Dr. Haus offers are: • Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and also to rejuvenate the skin • Treatments to address wrinkles and frown lines • Dermal fillers (bioplasty and Restylane SUBQ) to smooth out deeper wrinkles and lines • Skin treatments, rejuvenation and hair removal using eMax laser • Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with Velashape, the latest technology to achieve non-surgical liposuction. In addition to his private clinic in Harley Street, London, Dr. Haus also works in the NHS and by arrangement is also able to see patients in Rio de Janeiro. Dr Ariel Haus only uses non-invasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States.

ABSOLUTELY
FLAWLESS BY LEVANAH REYES-WAINWRIGHT
A SURVEY BY SUPERDRUG HAS REVEALED THAT WOMEN SPEND AN AVERAGE OF 330 DAYS OF THEIR LIVES APPLYING MAKE-UP AND WITH A MILLION STRESSES WEIGHING US DOWN, WE WANT FOUNDATION FORMULAS THAT ARE QUICK, EASY TO USE AND ACTUALLY BENEFIT OUR SKIN WHEN APPLIED. I’VE PICKED SOME OF THE BEST NEW FOUNDATIONS TO ENSURE YOU CAN FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH. BEST FOR DULL, UNEVEN SKIN
Thick, caked on foundation can often accentuate your flaws so today’s foundation formulas are more natural-looking, with flawless skin best achieved by using a ‘less is more’ method. If you are looking for a unified complexion that radiates luminousity, L’Oréal Paris have introduced Lumi Magique Light Infusing Foundation (£10.99, available nationwide) in six wearable shades designed to instantly illuminate the skin. Your skin will stay hydrated for up to 24 hours with lightweight coverage and a velvet touch finish. If you are looking instead to disguise imperfections, then new Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation (£10.99, Superdrug) is a new generation of liquid foundation that melts into the skin and contains 3 micronized colour concealing pigments designed to correct blemishes, diminish dark circles and eradicate redness.
BEST FOR OILY SKIN
Previously oily and combinations skins have been lumped into the same category, but now companies like Clinique and Clarins are recognising the need for foundation formulas that work in harmony with each skin type. Clinique’s new Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup (£21.50, available nationwide), is specially formulated for oily skin to control shine throughout the day. The ultra-light gel-cream formula feels refreshing and silky on the skin to maintain a fresh look all day. Clarins’ Ever Matte Foundation SPF 15 (£24, clarins.co.uk) uses an exclusive plant based ‘Skin Detox’ complex to balance shine and tighten pores whilst still giving day-long comfort and stay-fresh coverage. 6 0 J U LY 2 0 1 2
BEST FOR COMBINATION SKIN
Revolutionary formulas for combination skins now control oily areas whilst hydrating dry, tight patches to ensure a fresh, semi-matte finish. Chanel’s Perfection Lumière (£36, chanel.com) is both moisturising and mattifying, comes in 16 shades and different undertones e.g.yellow, for a real tone-matching result, which is lightweight and buildable. Also perfect for combination skins is Hello Flawless Oxygen WOW (£24.50, benefitcosmetics.co.uk) from Benefit. This oil-free formula has a hydrating complex that helps to plump up skin along with vitamin C & E known to prevent signs of ageing. Available in 9 shades and with an SPF25, Hello Flawless delivers instant results to leave you looking flawless in a flash.
BEST FOR MATURE SKIN
As we age our complexions become thirsty and lines and wrinkles appear, so you need foundations that cover without drawing attention to imperfections. By Terry’s Sheer Expert (£44, spacenk.co.uk) provides adjustable coverage and disguises signs of fatigue. Infused with hyaluronic acid, this perfecting fluid acts like Photoshop in a tube, to deliver a natural satin finish. Reinventing the tinted moisturiser is natural skincare specialist Liz Earle, with Sheer Skin Tint SPF15 (£21, lizearle.com). Rich and creamy like a foundation, yet lightweight, this glides effortlessly onto the skin to enhance natural skin tones. Jemma Kidd’s Skin Rescue Bio-Complex Veil SPF15 (£32, jemmakidd.com) is the ultimate multi-tasker that stimulates collagen production and preps, primes, tints, illuminates and protects the skin all-in-one.

IF YOU ARE JETTING OFF ON YOUR HOLIDAYS, THEN MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE THESE SUMMER ESSENTIALS BEFORE YOU GO AND WHEN YOU ARE THERE. BEACH BEAUTIFUL SKIN HERE WE COME!
Before you get on that plane to catch that tan, you skin needs to be in tip-top condition. Buff away dead skin cells with Burt’s Bee’s Mango & Orange Sugar Scrub (£12.99, burtsbees.co.uk) to reveal a polished body. Then moisturise any dry skin such as elbows, knees and feet with Living Nature Ultra Rich Body Cream (£27, livingnature.com) which combines the absorption of a cream with the intensely nourishing nature of body butter. If cellulite is the issue, then get your hands on the Australian ‘Wonder Product’ BodyShaper from BioElixa (£49.95, Boots) and reduce the appearance of bumps and dimples by an average of 38% in just 28 days. If you want to ensure you don’t look pasty on arrival at your destination, then look to self-tanning supremo James Read with over 10 years industry experience. His BB Cream and Gradual Tan-in-a-pen (£22.50, jamesreadtan.com) not only perfects

skin tone, cover imperfections, hydrates and illuminates but also contains a touch of gradual tan for that sun kissed glow. Omorovicza Glam Glow (£46, omorovicza.com) self-tanning lotion will give your body a natural looking golden glow while hints of lemon and tangerine raise the spirits and oils of virgin prunus and apricot kernel nourish the skin resulting in firmer, more supple and younger looking skin. Enhance your tan with Givenchy Mister Radiant Body (£32.50, Selfridges); with pearlescent microbeads of colour suspended in an ultrafresh gel that give a shimmering effect. Whilst away ensure you protect yourself with the best SPF’s available. Comfort Zone’s Sunsoul Body Cream SPF 30 (£36.25, comfortzoneskincare. com) is an anti-ageing sun protection body cream. Its nourishing formula hydrates and protects the skin, whilst making your tan last much
longer. Loved by Fearne Cotton and Thandie Newton, Murad’s powerful antioxidant-rich sunscreen, Essential-C Day Moisture SPF 30 (£57, murad.co.uk) shields and restores environmentally stressed skin, prevents sun and free radical damage and improves skin’s appearance and elasticity. To repair sun damaged skin, Crème de la Mer’s Reparative Body Lotion (£120, 0870 034 2566) delivers the anti-aging power of a serum to the body so visible damage is repaired and irritation soothed. VitaBella Repair and Protect Gel (£20, myvitabella. co.uk) infused with essentials oils and Aloe Vera is brilliant to calm bites and stings, and perfect popped in the fridge to soothe sunburn.
make-up. Brush on YoungBlood HiDef Mineral Perfecting Powder (£32, ybskin.co.uk) to help absorb excess oil and shine from the heat and set unruly brows with Shavata’s clear waterproof Brow Tamer gel (£14.50, shavata.co.uk ). For eyes, Chanel’s Ombres Contraste Duo (£30, 020 7493 3836) in Sable-Émouvant in natural beige and intense brown is the perfect daytime smoky eye pairing. Ultrasun Ultralip SPF15 (£5.50, John Lewis) makes an ideal base for lipstick enriched with blackcurrant seed oil to moisturise and protect in all temperatures. ModelCo Beauty Fix Airbrush Face (£22, Debenhams) will make sure your make up stays smudge and moisture proof all day, after a gentle mist in the morning.
Vitage Skin Defence SPF30 (£22, cosmestore.co.uk) and Balance Me 99% Natural Protection Daily Moisturiser SPF18 (£26, balanceme. co.uk) both leave a wearable matt finish as a great base for summer
Finally, New Body Shop Vanilla Body Mist (£7.00, 01903 844554) is perfect to splash on that summer feeling, and starting a new fragrance when on holiday helps evoke those happy memories when you return home.

RETURN TO THE
BRONZE AGE The Olympic athletes may be gunning for gold or silver this summer, but bronze is the winning look to strive for in beauty.
Few of us are sporting natural tans thanks to the unseasonable weather. However, your make-up bag has the perfect antidote to sallow complexions. If the sun won’t play ball, bring out the bronzer. A believable sun-kissed glow can be yours with transforming bronzing and highlighter products. “The healthy bronzed goddess look has always been a summertime favourite,” says Liz Pugh, Avon professional make-up artist. A bronzed and beautiful summer? Oh, glow on then.
GLOW GETTER
Ditch the dark matte bronzers, this season is all about a healthy, natural complexion. “When applying your bronzer, be sure to sweep the brush over your forehead, chin and nose - all the areas the sun would naturally catch,” advises Pugh. “For summertime nights out also brush along your shoulders and collarbone, this will provide the ultimate sunkissed look.” The trick to a believable ‘tan’ is to find a bronzer with just the right mix of red and browns - more like the colours you might find in your natural tan rather than anything too TOWIE-esque orange. 6 4 J U LY 2 0 1 2
Fake the sporty glow you would get after a day on the beach with an extra flush to your cheeks using blusher.
SHIMMER FEATURES
A bronze eyeshadow is this season’s make-up bag must-have. One light stroke of an antique, molten shade and you can look elegantly polished in seconds. Up the intensity for an evening of summer cocktails with a deeper, rusty copper shade and lashings of mascara. If one shade isn’t enough, try layering neutral bronze, taupe and sand dune shades. An unexpected vibrant flash of colour like sky blue or citrus yellow will also make your eyes smoulder against a tan. Dick Page, artistic director for Shiseido, says: “Blend a shimmering pale gold on the entire upper lid up to the brow line and a bronze copper just across the lid. “Define the inner corners with a surprise pop of aquamarine blue colour.”
BODY BEAUTIFUL
There’s one bronze beauty look that’s never going to catch on and

that’s the two-tone dark face/pale limbs effect. For an all-over glow, try an instant bronzing lotion to look luminous in 20 minutes flat. Self-tan products today are intelligent enough to be rain and sweat resistant but wash off in the shower. “A self-tan can illuminate your skin helping you not look as tired and washed out,” explains Athena Skouvakis, Piz Buin make-up artist. “It’s important not to make the skin appear too dark - a natural shade is key to pulling off that sun-kissed radiant look. From my experience, you should only ever aim to go two shades darker than your current natural skin tone.”
SUN-BAKED LIMBS
Once you’re basking in your own bronzed glory, emphasise the look further with some magic metallic enhancers. “A bronzed body is seen as a priceless accessory all year round,” says make-up artist Daniel Sandler. “Try a body shimmer to add a glamorous finishing touch and warm, golden highlights to your skin whether you have a natural or faux tan.” Make the most of the fact you can flash your pins before they’re back in thick opaque tights. Create supermodellong legs using a contouring bronzing technique. Sandler suggests: “Apply down the centre of the backs of legs, concentrating in a straight line from backs of thighs to ankles. Gently blend edges to achieve reflective dimension but avoid a stripe effect.”
TRIED & TESTED
Claire Macdonald gives the mascara wand the elbow with eyelash extensions. I wanted a dramatic lash look for my wedding which would a) mean I could avoid panda eyes if crying ensued and b) last until I unpacked my honeymoon clothes. With a hectic pre-wedding schedule Flutter was the answer to my skinny lash prayers as the eye-enhancing therapists come to your own home. A thorough inspection of my eye shape and current lash length and thickness was the first step. Due to my long lash length, my therapist thoughtfully advised me against my intended feline look so we went ahead with the ‘Va-va-Voom’ featuring longer lashes in the centre and shorter at the corners for a fuller effect. The entire treatment is bespoke to your own eyelashes and as I’m blessed with relatively lengthy ones, the therapist used the longest extensions available for full impact and to achieve a curled effect rather than poker straight. Goodbye mascara AND eyelash curlers. Tens of long, luscious lashes were painstakingly and individually applied for 90 minutes. The extensions are carefully glued onto your existing eyelashes so they shed when your own lashes naturally fall out. Though the treatment is long, as your eyes remain closed throughout and you’re lying back, it’s pretty relaxing - and the results are worth it. I open my eyes to fuller, thicker, longer looking lashes that didn’t look remotely fake. I take note of the therapist’s aftercare advise for extra lash longevity - use a non oil-based eye make-up remover or cleanser and a dry mascara comb to keep any unruly extensions in check. Mascara can be worn although it’s tricky to remove and I didn’t feel I needed it. My Va-va-Vooms were perfect for a long holiday but after three weeks I felt that they’d run their course and started twisting and falling out so returned to my therapist to have them professionally removed. And that’s the hardest part - I’m missing my extra Flutter already.

A VERY BROWN HEDGE INDEED! A phids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants through out the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly or Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and spreading several varieties of virus, causing severe die back. The Current troublesome aphid
7 2 J U LY 2 0 1 2
is the Cypress Aphid, which predominantly affects conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara Cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge, which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. The Cypress Aphid causes damage to Western
Red Cedar, Lawsons Cypress, Leylandii and Monterey Cypress. Aphids also indirectly damage car paintwork, patios and drives with honeydew, this a sugar rich sticky substance secreted by the aphids. Control of aphids on woody and non-woody plants is easy, additionally good cultural techniques help to reduce exploding populations. Techniques that can be employed are ensuring that overwintering aphids do not survive during
the winter, cleaning dead plant material and encouraging natural predators will help. In terms of treatments the old horticultural practice of applying a winter oil wash to fruit trees to kill overwintering eggs and young insects is still a very sound practice. THE WINNING FORMULA FOR CREATING DREAM HOMES… FEW SKILLS ARE ACQUIRED OVERNIGHT, AND THE COMPLEX BLEND OF SKILLS AND TRADES REQUIRED TO CREATE HOMES BEFITTING OF THE PRESTIGIOUS LOCATIONS WITHIN SOUTH BUCKS AND SURREY, ARE NO EXCEPTION. LOCAL FAMILY OWNED EAB CONSTRUCTION, HAVE BEEN BUILDING THEIR TEAM AND HONING THOSE SKILLS FOR OVER 26 YEARS, AND THE RESULTS ARE THERE TO SEE.

hether you are planning an extension, a long overdue refurbishment, or looking to build your dream home, you are certain to need the right team with a proven experience for the whole project. Established in 1986 by Paul and Julia Berridge, EAB remains a family owned and run Beaconsfield based business. With many of their original team still on board and a second generation of the family now helping to grow the business, EAB remains true to the principles, which have earned it a reputation for constructing homes of exceptional quality, to the most exacting standards. There are now more than 50 examples of EAB homes throughout South Bucks and Surrey, and although no two are the same, they all share the quality of build, high class materials, design flair and attention to detail, which has become the hallmark of the brand. However, reputations depend not only on the quality of the product, but also on the integrity of the company JUNE2012 7960 J U LY 2 0 1 2
and EAB have demonstrated over the years, that they can be trusted to deliver projects on time and to budget, relying on the dedication, experience and commitment of the whole team from the Directors down. Paul and Julia take an active personal interest in each stage of every development, from the acquisition of that perfect building plot, right through the planning and design process, to the polishing of the door knobs on the way out. As a mark of quality, EAB holds one of the highest NHBC ratings available to any home builder. Creating a modern dream home, requires a unique blend of skills; ranging from the integration of the latest state of the art and environmentally green technologies, to the latest luxury kitchen and bathroom designs, all brought together within the graceful interior styling and traditional architectural elegance deserving of the area. It is the recognition of this talent, not unlike that of a conductor, bringing together an orchestra to produce a masterpiece, which has
led to so many commissions for EAB. There are two sides to the EAB new build business, including spec. building for private clients and developers, alongside the construction of their own developments, of which several are already planned for the next year. However, EAB has also remained true to the extensions and refurbishment business, on which they first built their reputation, now strengthened by countless recommendations from their clients. In this market, EAB has remained the contractor of choice for many home owners, some of which have used them on several occasions, impressed not only by the quality of work and high level of reliable personal service, but knowing they will always be on hand when needed. Completed in February this year, a project in Camp Road, Gerrards Cross, is a spectacular example of an EAB home. The new property, which incorporates 7 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms spread over 10,000 sq.ft. of stunning living accommodation,
sold off plan when the home was but a few inches out of the ground; a true testament to EAB’s reputation for design and build quality. The new property is built to an ultra luxurious specification, featuring air conditioning and fresh air ventilation, a fully integrated computer controlled lighting and sound system, and a basement with a fully fitted cinema and wine cellar, all sited within over 1.3 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. A truly exceptional example of what this home builder is all about. So when you are driving around the area, look out for the EAB boards, you are sure to see many more of them in the future. Or, if you would like to know more about the company and what they can offer you, from a small extension to a new 15,000 sq.ft. mansion, give Paul or Julia a call, their door is always open, and they will always be around to discuss your very own dream home. www.eabconstruction.co.uk Tel: 01494

FAMILY LAW
I
t is now very common for parents to provide financial assistance to their children to enable the purchase of their first home. This is particularly true with current restrictive lending conditions making it hard for first time buyers to obtain a mortgage even if they have been able to save sufficient to put down a deposit.
on a loan, if the child were to pay an element of rent to the parents in respect of the parents’ part ownership, then this rent would be treated as income upon the parents and again be liable to Income Tax at the parents’ tax rates.
Whether the parents make a loan, a gift or are taking part ownership in the property by way of a Declaration of Trust, it is essential that parents understand the implications of each type of arrangement and the tax implications upon themselves. The most straightforward way is to simply make a gift to the child upon the basis that the money need never be repaid and has “no strings attached”. From the parents’ perspective, this would be treated as a potentially exempt transfer. This means that for Inheritance Tax purposes it would be outside of the parents’ Estate and completely disregarded for Inheritance Tax purposes in the event that the parent were to survive 7 years from the making of the gift. If however the parent were to die within the 7 year period then there may be Inheritance Tax payable and, in the absence of any contrary intention, the tax would fall to be paid by the child as recipient. Considering that they have had to borrow money to purchase the home, it is very unlikely that that child would have funds available to cover any such tax that became due. At the very least therefore it would be sensible for a Deed of Gift to be completed to confirm the agreement made between the parent and child, the date of it being made and, if required, agreement that the burden of any Inheritance Tax that may become due should fall upon that parents’ Estate following death rather than upon the child who had received the gift. The second option would be for the parents’ contribution to be a loan to the child which the child would repay at some time in the 8 0 J U LY 2 0 1 2
KIPPERS CAN GIVE YOU FINANCIAL INDIGESTION
Kids in parents’ pockets eroding retirement savings (KIPPERS) may raise a smile, but parents must exercise care when lending money to children who wish to purchase a property. Alex Drake, a Private Client partner at Taylor Walton solicitors, looks at the problems and solutions. future. Such an arrangement should be recorded in writing to make it clear the amount of the loan, the rate of interest payable and any capital repayment terms. The parent could take a charge on the property to secure their loan, subject to the agreement of any lender. Clearly, any interest accruing and paid to the parents would be liable to Income Tax and should be declared on the parents’ Tax Returns. Any outstanding amount of the loan would remain as part of the parents’ Estate and be added to the value of their assets upon death and again be liable to Inheritance Tax. In these circumstances, since
the value of the loan would still form part of the parents’ Estate the Inheritance Tax would be payable out of their Estate also. The final option is for the parents to enter into a Declaration of Trust to take part ownership of the property or have their names on the title deeds themselves. If this part ownership option is taken, then the parent’s share of any capital gains upon sale of the property will be chargeable to the parents as Capital Gains Tax as it would not be the parents’ main residence and thus not qualify for relief. As with interest paid
With all of the above arrangements, the parents should also take care to ensure that the arrangement is taken into account under their Wills. If the parent has more than one child and wishes to treat them all equally, then they may need to make pecuniary legacies to the other children of an equal amount to “make up” for a gift made. In the event that a loan is made, care should be taken to ensure it is clear whether the loan is to be repaid upon death of the parent or indeed written off. If it is to be written off then again appropriate steps should be taken to ensure equality between other siblings if that is deemed appropriate. If the loan is to be repaid, then the parents would no doubt wish to satisfy themselves that the child would not have a sale forced upon them and risk homelessness. Likewise, if part ownership of the property were taken either on the Deeds themselves or by way of a Declaration of Trust then again, it should be established whether the share of the property owned by the parents should form part of that child’s inheritance or whether it would again be intended that the property be sold and the proceeds added to the parents’ Estate for distribution.
