Welcome to our July issue Few would disagree with the recently expressed view of a Harpenden Town Councillor that Harpenden Common is ‘the jewel in the town’s crown.’ The vast tract of common grassland, sweeping you into the town centre as you approach from the south, is home to a golf club, a cricket club and the occasional fair and circus, yet still provides acres of recreational space for residents and visitors. But, for one day a year, this idyllic scene is interrupted for a few hours for the biggest classic car meeting of its kind in Britain. Over the years we’ve had bright sun, clouds and occasional rain but whatever the weather nothing stops most of the pre-registered owners of more than 1000 classic vehicles from driving to Harpenden from all over the UK and beyond to display their lovingly-maintained vehicles. There is never any shortage of admirers. Up to 10,000 spectators, residents and visitors spend hours admiring the mouth-watering collection. Even in damp conditions the attendance is unexpectedly and gratifyingly high. The 20th Classics on the Common takes place on the 31st July. Darcy’s restaurant in St Albans has a suave combination of moody cocktail bar & dining rooms spread over two floors with a courtyard for fine weather eating. In their ninth year, menus are designed to suit a wide variety of tastes with influences from Asia, Australia and Europe. This gives you just a small taste of exciting events and articles featured in this month’s issue...

Dream Hanbury Manor Weddings Smaller weddings are becoming a more popular option with numbers of 15 to 30 people being a preferable amount of guests for the day.
P
eople spend too much time worrying about other people that they do not concentrate on what they want from their wedding day. Opting for a small wedding not only saves on your budget but gives you the opportunity to not have to tell people they are not invited without feeling bad. You can dance the night away with friends and family you feel comfortable with rather than spend the day catching up with acquaintances and most importantly you can soak up being a newlywed with your new spouse. One of the biggest wedding decisions you need to make is picking the venue, so why choose a bigger venue just to accommodate more guests when you can go for the first option you instantly fell in love with. Hanbury Manor, a Marriott Hotel & Country Club in Ware, Hertfordshire offers Intimate wedding packages with smaller room options including the Drawing Room and Conservatory that can be opened to join into each other if you wish you utilise the two rooms through the day or the period library setting with all options overlooking the 200 acres of stunning parkland. The hotels Intimate Wedding Packages are licensed for civil ceremonies with a minimum number of 15 people required starting from £75

THE SHIRE The only Seve Ballesteros designed golf course in the UK
“I’ve designed many courses around the world, but this is my first in the UK. I was waiting for an opportunity to create a golf complex with a course which looked and played like I thought it should and with first class clubhouse and leisure facilities.”
W
We are doing our bit to encourage beginners by launching a new Get Into Golf membership... new blood is essential if golf is to attract the commercial investment it needs to keep up with other sports, many of which receive more government funds than golf, in this country at least.
One look at the Ballesteros Masters golf course in May will tell you that our magnificent, international-class golf course truly will look, and play, better this season than it has ever done. Elsewhere on this website you can read about some of the work which Tony Peterson’s course management team has been doing, but we are as passionate about presenting the course in best-possible condition, as you are about playing it. On the greens, we’ll average between 10 and 11 on the Stimpmeter this season, much faster than the average for Hertfordshire. Augusta is 13.
“Brush With Death” for The Shire London founder inspires MidSummer Masters The Shire London owner Tony Menai Davis announces star-studded celebrity golf event to raise money for the hospital which saved his life. Mid-Summer Masters, 21st June 2013, aims to raise £24,000 to pay for an ECMO machine at Papworth Hospital . May 31st 2012 seemed to be just another Thursday at The Shire London Golf Club, but it ended in a dramatic ambulance journey, and a brush with death for the club’s owner, Tony Menai Davis. And now the Welsh-born golf entrepreneur, who in December 2012 opened the West London Golf Centre near Ruislip has announced a celebrity golf day to be held at his golf club on the longest day of the year, to raise funds to buy an ECMO machine – the device which kept him alive, at Papworth Hospital.
e’re looking forward to another eventful and enjoyable summertime at The Shire London, and as we enter our seventh season we have a typically full agenda here at the club. Although many of you will by now have visited our new range in west London, and will be aware of the two golf courses we are building over there, no matter what happens elsewhere in the group The Shire London will always be our priority. It is the standardsetter for everything which we are doing. Memberships at The Shire are among London’s most-prized, and we always strive to give you, our valued Members, the best possible service and quality.

St Albans Clock Tower
T
he site of the Eleanor cross which once stood in St Albans lies opposite Waxhouse Gate. This was one of the entrances to the medieval Abbey. In 1290, the funeral procession of Queen Eleanor, wife of Edward I rested here on its slow journey to Westminster. Neglected, the cross was pulled down in 1703 to be replaced by the town pump. Later, in 1874 a fountain was put in its place. This is now in Victoria Place, where the gaol used to be. Behind the cross and built between 1403 and 1412, is the Clock Tower, the only medieval example in the country. The map on the right shows the centre of St Albans around 1700 including the Clock Tower. From the beginning it had a mechanical clock, a great rarity at that time. As the Abbey also had one, this was probably the reason for having the same. Indeed, the Clock Tower itself seems to have been intended as a visible statement of St. Albans’ civic ambitions against the power of the Abbot. It was both a look out as well as a curfew, ringing out the times when people had to be indoors “covering the fire”.
floor were let together until roughly 1900. Progressing onto the second floor, you will discover the clock keeper’s living room, where he and his family would have lived between 1412 and 1866. The third floor boasts the Victorian clock, which was added when the tower was restored in 1866. It was designed by Lord Grimthorpe, who was the leading Victorian authority on clocks – he also designed the mechanism of Big Ben. The fourth floor houses the original bell itself, still in place and weighing one tonne. From 1808-1814 during the Napoleonic war, it was used by the Admiralty as a semaphore station. This was operated by a shutter system and could help relay a message to or from Yarmouth in 5 minutes. By the 1860’s the Tower was in a bad way and was nearly demolished. The restoration in 1864 was supervised by Sir Gilbert Scott. In 2004, the roof was rebuilt with improved public safety and access. It is planned to re-display the exhibition in the near future.
However, as you start your journey up the 93 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase, you will discover that each of its five floors reveals a snapshot of the tower’s varied historical past.
You can now access the roof of the clock tower, which not only offers beautiful views of the abbey of St Albans and the historical Roman town of Verulamium below, but is also the site of the shutter telegraph. This was used as one of 16 stations linking Whitehall and the North Sea Fleet in Great Yarmouth (within just five minutes) during the Napoleonic Wars.

Anyone for a Pimms?
The Pimm’s tradition is almost as entrenched in British culture as the cup of tea. All it takes is a prolonged period of good weather, and nothing beats a glass of Pimms on a summer’s day.
P
imm’s is most popular in Britain, particularly. It is one of the two staple drinks at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta and Ascot. A Pimm’s is also the standard cocktail at many polo matches. History of Pimms Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent, invented the thirstquencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cup moniker was born. Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is based on gin and can be served both on ice or in cocktails. It has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit. It is often taken with “English-style” lemonade, as well as various chopped fresh ingredients, particularly apples, cucumber, oranges, lemons, strawberry, and borage, though nowadays most substitute mint. Pimm’s can also be mixed with champagne (or a sparkling white wine), called a “Pimm’s Royal Cup”.
2 0 J U LY 2 0 1 3
Pimm’s began large-scale production in 1851 to keep up with sales to other bars. The distillery began selling it commercially in 1859 using hawkers on bicycles. In 1865 Pimm sold the business and the right to use his name to Frederick Sawyer. In 1880 the business was acquired by future Lord Mayor of London, Horatio Davies, and a chain of Pimm’s Oyster Houses was franchised in 1887.
Pimms Recipes
After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups. Pimm’s No. 2 Cup was based on Scotch whisky. Pimm’s No. 3 Cup is based on brandy. Phased out, but a version infused with spices and orange peel marketed as Pimm’s Winter Cup is now seasonally available. Pimm’s No. 4 Cup was based on rum, currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 5 Cup was based on rye whisky, also currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 6 Cup is based on vodka. It is still produced, but in small quantities.
ENGLISH PASSION PIMMS NO.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice and add 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka, flesh and juice of a passion fruit and a dash of sugar syrup. Shake well and strain into a tumbler full of ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and two short straws.
The original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity.
TRADITIONAL PIMMS NO.1 Take one slice of orange, lemon, apple, cucumber per person and one sprig of mint and add to two parts lemonade to one part Pimms. TURBO PIMMS NO.1 As above but five parts lemonade, two parts Pimms, one part gin.
MAXIMUM VOLTAGE PIMMS NO.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice, 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka and 25ml of Cointreau. Shake well and strain into a highball full of ice. Fill with soda water and garnish with mint. If mixing your own Pimms sounds too much like hard work, head to one of the many pubs and bars in London which serve up Pimms with a healthy dose of fruit, ice and garnished with a sprig of mint.

Prime Purchase I
n these straightened times, adding to your watch collection may not seem to be a priority but the continued year-on-year growth of the UK watch market is evidence that many of us are doing just that. If we are to embrace this fascination with watches, there are still ways to save money, or maybe just to spend it more wisely. The last two years has seen explosive growth in the pre-owned watch market. Following the pattern set by the automotive industry, more consumers are realising that they have never bought a car as its first owner so why shouldn’t they take the same attitude with watches. This way the buyer can avoid the initial hit of VAT and depreciation enabling them to save money on their intended purchase or move up to a brand that they would otherwise be unable to afford. Once you stray from the watch brands’ official dealer network, there are risks of course. There are the watch equivalent of the backstreet car lot, selling pieces of dubious origin, put together from a variety of parts which may, or may not, be what they seem. Buying a watch from an auction house such as Fellows gives you piece of mind on this point. The large number of specialists within the watch department creates a wind ranging pool of knowledge across many brands and eras of production. This ensures that fakes are rooted out and that the rest of the watches offered for sale are described accurately, fully disclosing any aftermarket additions or alterations that may have been made. Fellows are famous for the depth and rigor of the condition reports that we produce for each watch. Eschewing a simple grading system which may be misleading, each watch is inspected under 10x magnification both inside and outside the case. Every mark, dent or scratch is noted to ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises. Bidders have such confidence in this approach that they are willing to bid from around the word on the
2 2 J U LY 2 0 1 3 2 2 J U LY 2 0 1 3
basis of these reports and the multiple high quality online images that Fellows produces. Another way to buy great value watches from auction is to take advantage of the breadth of brands on offer and the range of price points. For many watch brands there are similar – even related brands that share features but can be bought for much less than their coveted cousins. The Fellows Vintage and Modern Wristwatch Auction of 15th July 2013 provides three such examples, although many more may be found. The Omega Seamaster chronograph is rightly regarded as a quality prestige watch which holds its value well in the pre-owned market. Consider Lot 105 from Longines, Swatchgroup stable mate of Omega, who’s equally robust and wellmade Hydroconquest chronograph sells at auction for a quarter of the price. If you like the sparse Teutonic style of A. Lange & Söhne but don’t quite have the cash, take a look at Lot 60 by Glashütte Original, the Saxon neighbours have a very similar look but the Glashütte will relive you of a lot less cash. The Rolex Daytona is one of the most sought after sports chronographs in the world and their second hand values reflect this. If you want a Rolex-made case and bracelet but are happy with an ETA movement then the Tudor Oystersdate Chronograph is the budget option. At Fellows we are happy to share our knowledge and passion for watches to guide your purchase. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. A ‘classic’ vehicle should be at least 20 years old but we usually have one or two built around a century ago, such as a 1900 Daimler Type A, and a 1913 model T Ford. Every decade following is always well represented, too, from Rolls Royces and Maseratis to Austin A40s and Morris Minors. We have even had a Sinclair C5. Classics on the Common was the brain-child of Harpenden resident and Metropolitan Police officer Peter Madden. The idea was born shortly after he bought a 1968 Rover P5B coupe and the first year attracted 125 cars. Since that time the event has grown steadily in popularity with owners and spectators. When Peter Madden decided to make the 2008 Classics his last, he asked the Harpenden Village Rotary Club to take over responsibility for organising and running the event. As members of a service organisation Rotarians are no strangers to running or helping with events and, with more than 40 members, we had a good deal of manand woman-power to offer. This year we are proud to be organising the 20th Classics on the Common. On the day, the Rotarians are at full stretch so we are very grateful to have our numbers boosted by members of our associated club, Harpenden Village Inner Wheel, Harpenden Explorer Scouts,
1961 DAIMLER
1980 CORVETTE C3
the St Albans and Harpenden Police Cadets and members of the Carpenters Arms Classics Car Club. Classics on the Common is a non-profit event but it does give the organisers an opportunity to raise funds for local, national and international charities. The classic car owners make a donation to register and, although there is no entry charge to the public, Harpenden’s townsfolk have always responded generously when approached with collecting buckets. Local businesses, pubs and restaurants lend support, too, by donating prizes for our tombola or taking banner advertising. In 2012 we raised a record £19,000. Various charities supported by Rotary benefited but the main recipients were Keech Children’s Hospice, Harpenden Mencap and Mercy Ships. This year the main beneficiaries will be Herts Air Ambulance, the Samaritans (Local Branch), Keech Children’s Hospice and Water Aid. The success of ‘Classics’ is not difficult to understand. For the proud owners it provides a display window for their treasured vehicles and, for the public, vicarious delight and admiration. www.classicsonthecommon.com

ritish summer time has arrived – and it’s a hot one! So we strive to soak up every second of the sun, by embracing the outdoors with long walks in the country, BBQ’s or maybe a festival or two. For me, there’s nothing better after a long hot day, than unwinding with some al fresco dining and a glass of wine. The thought of ice cold beads of condensation trickling their way down my glass of chilled Sancerre has me reaching for the corkscrew before I’ve even walked through the door. At Wine Rack in Radlett we offer a vast selection of wines, hundreds of spirits, champagnes, real ales, world beers, and cigars all bursting with offers and special promotions. We have free tastings every Friday and Saturday, not to mention an extensive range of spirits to taste every day. We welcome our customers into a friendly and relaxed environment, just to help make your selection the right one. Our team have over 20 years experience & knowledge, so we can help plan for that special occasion case discounts apply. I would like to recommend three summer wines from our store. First up the beautiful Zull Grüner Veltliner 2011, a classic white wine from the Austrian Weinviertel, this wine shows typical regional and varietal character. Elegant and delicate, with hints of fresh pear. It is an excellent alternative to your usual Sauvignon Blanc. The second is a delicious sparkling wine, stunningly

British. Produced in Sussex for over twenty years, Nyetimber Classic Cuv ée has all the hallmarks of classic Champagne. Delicate bubbles pervade this light golden wine, filling the nose with aromas of lemon tart, biscuit and floral notes, the citrus character reappears on a long and fruity finish. Last but no means least is Côtes de Provence Rosé Délice 2011. This rose is light salmon in colour, the aromas of red berries are crisp, clean and fresh. On the palate it is light and fruity but feels like you have a mouthful of red berries. Currently on offer at £8.49. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you all to our free Italian wine tasting on Saturday 27th July at 1pm in Radlett. There will be many Italian wines to taste. A range of cheeses and crackers will also be at arms length as well as special discounts on the day. Please stop by and join our team to sample our Italian delights. ointly organised by the Aston Martin Owners Club, Aston Martin Heritage Trust and Aston Martin, and held in partnership with The Royal Parks and The Royal Household, the centenary celebration will see an unprecedented gathering of the rarest, most significant, most beautiful and most famous Aston Martins ever made.
Themed displays of cars will tell Aston Martin’s remarkable story on the day. The Centenary Timeline Display on the Broadwalk takes visitors on a 100year journey from the origins of the brand in Henniker Mews, Chelsea, to the current global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire. Every iconic Aston Martin road car is represented from ‘A3’, the oldest surviving car, to the Vanquish Centenary Edition. There is also a vivid glimpse of the future – and the start of Aston Martin’s second century of luxury sports car-making – in the form of the stunning CC100 Speedster Concept. Reflecting the breadth of Aston Martin’s production and the bespoke nature of the brand’s rarest and most specialised models, there is also a Centenary Selection display. This diverse collection includes cars rarely seen outside of private collections, including a brace of bespoke Zagatos, the trio of Bertone Jets, and a number of other unique cars commissioned over the years by passionate customers around the world. Aston Martin and James Bond is a combination which has left an indelible mark on popular culture. To celebrate this famous relationship seven of the movie cars will be on display, including the iconic DB5 from the most recent blockbuster, SKYFALL. Motorsport has always played a major role in Aston Martin’s history, so it’s only fitting that there should be a dedicated display of the most significant and successful racing cars at Kensington Gardens. Highlights include the exquisite Ulster, an iconic DBR1, legendary DB4 GT Zagato and Gulf-liveried DBR9 GT1 car. The Park Privé race car display is presented in tribute to racing driver Allan Simonsen, who lost his life at the Le Mans 24 Hours race last month. Entry to the Centenary Celebration is free and everyone is welcome, from the most ardent enthusiast to those new to the great British marque. Souvenir

programmes containing detailed information on all the display cars will be available to buy on the day. The atmosphere will be relaxed and friendly, with a variety of refreshments stalls, plus musical entertainment from the Kensington Gardens bandstand. For those visitors keen to make the day even more special, Aston Martin’s concierge service can arrange for luxury picnic hampers to be ready for collection on arrival. There is also a specially-reserved Park Privé area, tickets for which can also be ordered via the Aston Martin Concierge by calling +44 (0) 203 086 8208. The Aston Martin Centenary Celebration will be open from 10.00am until 5.00pm and has been created with the support of Aston Martin’s Centenary Technology Partner Microsoft and Centenary Celebration partners Bang & Olufsen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts, Louis Roederer, Viaggi, Pirelli and Zurich Private Clients. The bespoke home of Rolls-Royce Collection On 1st January 2013, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars celebrated 10 years of production at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. To mark this latest chapter in the marque’s 109-year history, a special collection of Ghost and Phantom family models, conceived and designed by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke team, will be released during 2013.
T
he Home of Rolls-Royce Collection celebrates the meticulous design, engineering and craftsmanship employed in the production of every car that leaves Goodwood. and following the release of a design sketch illustrating the Bespoke design and conception process, a rare glimpse into the skill of the marque’s master craftspeople and unique manufacturing processes is presented today. “The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection showcases what makes Goodwood a unique centre of manufacturing excellence,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “A perfect blend of traditional crafts, cutting-edge technology and world-class Bespoke design has driven our success over our first 10 years. In this time, Rolls-Royce has taken its place as maker of the world’s pinnacle super-luxury good, an achievement built on the passion and commitment of every craftsperson employed at Goodwood. This beautiful collection is a fitting way to celebrate an extraordinary decade.” A ‘celebration’ motif, presented in hand-crafted marquetry on the frontfascia marks this landmark year in Rolls-Royce history. Using methods akin to the artistry of fine furniture makers, the effect is achieved through a process that marries cutting-edge technology with traditional

craftsmanship. Individual pieces of wood veneer are laser-cut to ensure precision. A craftsperson then painstakingly assembles the sections, ensuring they perfectly express the vision of the marque’s Bespoke design team. A fastidious process of quality control follows, utilising the world’s most accurate measuring tool – the human eye. In 2012, a second successive record year for the marque, over 3,500 hand-built Rolls-Royce cars, exclusively created at Goodwood, were exported to all five continents. This is celebrated throughout the collection with a compass motif that expresses the Home of Rolls-Royce’s position as a global centre of manufacturing excellence. The pattern is also intricately embroidered into the armrests and console lid. 112,533 stitches are applied by precision embroidery machines that make 1,000 individual stitches per minute – however, such is the complexity of the pattern it takes over an hour to finish each individual piece. Co-ordinates engraved into tread plates, the bezel of the Spirit of Ecstasy and umbrella handles further express Goodwood’s place as the only manufacturing centre for the world’s pinnacle super-luxury marque. A hand-painted coachline, culminating in a half-compass motif completes the exterior. Forming

the final stage of a week-long, 22 stage painting process, coachlines are hand-applied by one highly-skilled craftsman using squirrel hair brushes. Normally this takes three hours – however the intricacy of this very special Bespoke design means the time taken to complete the process doubles. The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection cars are currently being hand-built at Goodwood. Final images of the completed cars will be released in the second half of 2013. However we have new details about the upcoming Home of Rolls-Royce Collection. The highlights of the collection are – 1 A compass motif expresses the Home of Rolls-Royce’s position as a global centre of manufacturing excellence. The beautiful motif on the glove box has been created from 11 different types of wood including Sycamore, Holly and Satinwood. These represent the different woods that have been used in Ghost and Phantom interiors since 2003. Each piece of virgin wood has been milled and sanded by hand before being carefully coated with 5 layers of lacquer. 2 20,000 wood veneer combinations are available in every Rolls-Royce. Each veneer created by the craftsman’s hand of the Bespoke team is totally unique to the customer. All of veneers are stored in a humidor which is kept at 25 degrees and 80% humidity to allow the wood to breathe and remain supple. Each veneer spends a minimum of 3 days in the humidor, before being fitted into a Rolls-Royce.
3 W hile continuing to use traditional woodworking skills, the craftsmen applied lasers to ensure total precision in the alignment of each of the 170 separate pieces of wood along with the metal inlay. 4 The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection Phantom embroidery comes to life with 112,533 stitches which are applied by precision embroidery machines that make 1,000 individual stitches per minute. But due to the complexity of the pattern it takes over an hour to finish each individual piece. 5 The Spirit of Ecstasy comes from the Home of Rolls-Royce Collection. cars, which highlight the exquisite craftsmanship found at Goodwood. The inscription on this special Spirit of Ecstasy references the position of their plant. 6 Each car undergoes a 22-stage process which uses more than 100 pounds (45.5kg) of paint. The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection offers 44,000 individual exterior paint colors to choose from. 7 I n all, 60 pairs of hands take 400 hours to construct every Rolls-Royce motor car. 8 A lso 450 individual leather pieces are cut and fitted to each Rolls-Royce Phantom. 9 And 672 metres of thread is used in every Home of Rolls-Royce Collection Phantom. 10 Lastly, there are precisely 58 layers to every Phantom wood part.

as soft gold and bronze and reflective surfaces like glass, marble, lacquer and mirror-glass, intriguing textures contrast the highly polished and architectural with the artisanal. Each floor comprises of a series of intimate areas with specially commissioned artworks and both contemporary and antique furniture feature throughout. Every artefact has been chosen to reflect the brand and Mademoiselle Chanel’s legacy as a passionate patron of the arts. Upon entering the boutique on the ground floor customers find a gallery inspired by the famed apartment at 31 rue Cambon and to the left of this an area dedicated to watches and an edited selection of Fine Jewellery. On the right one can find the latest statement accessories. Hand woven metallic white gold wall panels and quartz inlay floors create a luxurious and exceptional setting.

A ‘ribbon’ wall created from gold fabric inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s collection of Coromandel screens provides a beautiful showcase for handbags including the iconic 2:55, the latest editions of the Boy Chanel handbag and others from the most recent collections. Plaster wall panels by Marc Swanson and a bronze and leather box by Peter Marino underline the sense of the unique. The ground floor also houses costume jewellery, small leather goods and a wall dedicated to sunglasses. Two additional walls showcase scarfs and belts and a further selection of handbags are available in this area. Beauty ‘try – on’ counters furnished with upholstered highstools offer the full range of CHANEL fragrance and beauty products. The ascent to the first floor, by lift or by the marble staircase, delivers one to Ready-to-Wear and shoes. Decorated with an imposing antique fireplace, Jasper Morrison graphic marble display shelves as well as artworks by Karl Lagerfeld, Richard Deacon and Liza Lou amongst many more, the floor has a townhouse like intimacy. Selected pieces from the 2012-13 Métiers d’art Paris-Edimbourg collection, first presented at Linlithgow Palace, Scotland in December 2012, will take centre stage.
Artisanal Scottish knits and tweeds, fabrics that Mademoiselle Chanel embraced throughout her career, form the centrepiece of Karl Lagerfeld’s timely reinvention. Both Ready-to-Wear rooms have a series of exclusive try on salons and the expansive double shoe area has ample room to browse the latest collection. From the second floor, one is rewarded with a bird’s eye view of the atrium through which cascades a giant, twisting ‘pearlnecklace’ sculpture by renowned French artist, Jean-Michel Othoniel. The area is conceived as a gallery space with fine oils, rare prints, and sculpture on display and features antique Chinese carpets, consoles and burgundy lacquer walls reminiscent of Mademoiselle Chanel’s Rue Cambon apartment. HAIR TO DIVE FOR GET THE MERMAID-INSPIRED LOOK THIS SUMMER WITH NATURAL, TEXTURED HAIR. LISA HAYNES REVEALS THE SHORT CUTS TO BEACH BEAUTIFUL.
Get the mermaid-inspired look this summer with natural, textured hair. Lisa Haynes reveals the short cuts to beach beautiful. Put down the straightening irons and smoothing balms, because the look of this summer is undone beachy waves. Take inspiration from the flowing locks of mythical mermaids. ink naturally beautiful hair with tousled texture that doesn't look like it's been styled or smothered with product. "Messy manes are a key look this season," says David Fletcher, senior creative director for Unite hair. "To achieve the look, work with your natural hair's texture and aim for natural, loose, beachy waves - not bouncy curls or dead straight hair." Hit the beach with tresses that turn heads. And if you don't have naturally mermaid-esque locks, fake it with amplifying potions. Here's how to tease, tousle and transform your hair for high summer.
4 6 J U LY 2 0 1 3
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y LONGER LOCKS Mermaids aren't known for their bobs or crops. Hair grows roughly an inch every two months, and if you're craving longer hair you need to review your maintenance. "e key to hair growth is scalp health and condition," says hair stylist Errol Douglas MBE. "It should be clean and neither too dry or oily. ere are lots of treatments available to correct and regulate the scalp." Trims are still essential but Douglas advises asking your stylist for a 'dusting' instead of a trim or cut. He explains: "It's literally a method where just the tiniest particles are removed from the ends. Foods rich in amino acids help the production of keratin, hair's natural protein, which will assist in it growing fuller and stronger." Hydrate the hair regularly to avoid breakage and use heat protectants every time styling tools are used. Length can be ageing as you get older but it's often the change in texture that's the giveaway. "If my clients are reluctant to let go of length, I advise face-framing layers that soften the face and break up the coarser texture of hair as we grow older," Douglas suggests.
TRIED & TESTED Create instant beachy hair texture with a salt spray. Our testers spritz with three products: TRESemme Texture Style Tousled Wave Spray, £5.50 e spray action felt untargeted and not a lot seemed to reach my hair. I liked the boosted beach texture, but my ends felt slightly sticky afterwards. 2/5

Also comes in a handy travel-size to recreate the effect on an actual beach. 5/5 Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Salt Spray, £14.25 (www.tigihaircare.com) I loved the perfumed smell of this product. e spray was super-light and non-sticky in texture and resulted in instant loose waves after scrunching loosely with fingers. 4/5 n
TEXTURE TONICS Look to beach, salt or texturising sprays to help you achieve beachy waves in an instant. ey may have different names but they all do the same hair-boosting job as though you've been tumbling in waves. "ese sprays give a matte, earthy texture to the hair," explains Gill Berry, of Structure hair. "It's excellent on short, choppy styles, but also long, wavy and curly hair as it gives excellent volume, while adding strength and definition." e more spray you use, the more the hold factor increases. For a lighter finish, spray onto your hands and scrunch the product into your hair. For greater hold and texture, spray directly onto the hair. If your hair is uber-straight, promote a wavier look with curling tongs. Spritz a beach spray onto clean, damp hair and rough dry, then use a curling wand to wave random sections from the mid-lengths to the ends. Berry says: "You're not after a neat finish, more of a messy, slightly dishevelled look." BRAIDY BUNCH Look to plaits for practical beach style. ey scrape your hair off the face in the heat and unravel to reveal beachy kinks once they're undone. Go for braids if you also want to hide a multitude of hair sins, like greasy roots or frizziness once you've taken a dip. Norris Ogario, founder of Ogario London salon, says: "Braids and pretty plaits always make an appearance at this time of year but this season there's a shift towards multiple braids. "Very cute and easy to do, simply plait your hair when wet and leave until nearly dry. At this stage, loosen your locks to reveal soft casual waves and add in some plaits around the side of the face." To avoid looking too neat and 'done', mess up the plaits a little to give them a fluffy feel, leaving some of them looser than others. e tighter the plait, the tighter the wave. If you prefer a relaxed look, stick to one or two loose plaits.

LOCAL CARE FROM A LOCAL COMPANY When looking for care for an elderly family member it’s really important to make the right choice.
H
ome Instead Senior Care, a company specialising in the athome care of older people, has 5 offices across Hertfordshire and is passionate about providing care to its clients which not only improves the quality of their lives but those of their families too. Speaking about their service, Peter Neighbour from the Watford office said, “The work we do assures the wellbeing and safety of our clients and brings peace of mind to their families and this is really important. “More often than not these days older people’s children live too far away to provide day to day care for their parents and that’s where we come in, providing companionship and a regular, friendly face at the door. “Some of our clients require more complex care and we can assist with this too.” Home Instead know that quality care cannot be delivered in short, rushed visits so, unlike many of the care services reported in the media, they insist that care visits are of a minimum one hour duration. They also understand how important it is for clients to have continuity of care from the right caregiver. For this reason a great deal of attention is paid to carefully matching caregivers to clients so that they share common areas of interest and can form an immediate bond. Peter continued, “We are passionate about providing the highest standard of person-centred care. Our ethos is simple – treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. In doing this we are improving our clients’ quality of life and helping them to remain safely in their own homes, leading
4 8 J U LY 2 0 1 3
an independent life.” Home Instead’s service is extremely flexible and ranges from help a few hours a week to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care such as assistance with bathing, dressing and medications reminders; home help covering housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties; and companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company. The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care, respite care plus end of life care. With an ageing population, cases of dementia are increasing at an alarming rate, which means that more and more people will be affected by the disease at some point in their lives. Home Instead have developed a specialised City and Guilds accredited training programme, which is being rolled out to all caregivers. This is being followed by a new initiative – Dementia Workshops for family members. These are designed to help those caring for a loved one with dementia understand the disease and also provides coping strategies to help deal with the sometimes difficult behaviours associated with the condition. Workshops are being rolled out across Hertfordshire in the coming months. For more information on Home Instead Senior Care please visit www.homeinstead.co.uk to find your nearest local office.

GLOW ON A DETOX
WITH BIKINI SEASON LOOMING, HOLLYWOOD NUTRITIONIST KIMBERLY SNYDER TELLS LISA HAYNES HOW TO GET GLOWING ON A BEAUTY DETOX.
I
t might feel as though we've only just ditched our winter coats, but bikini season is just around the corner. If the late onset of summer means you're still sporting dull, pasty skin and winter excess baggage on your body, look to your larder for a seasonal change of gear. As a Hollywood nutritionist and author of Beauty Detox Solution, Kimberly Snyder's philosophy is that you can eat your way to radiant skin and an enviable body - no faddy diets or silly fasts required. Having helped countless high-profile celebrities prepare for the red carpet, her quick fixes could transform you into a summer star too. "What we eat affects not only our weight and our overall health, but also our hair, skin and nails - all the features that make us beautiful. To unlock that beauty, one needs to cleanse from within," Snyder says. So head to the supermarket and stock up on ingredients for a beautiful summer. FOOD PHILOSOPHY Forget calorie and carb counting and look to the foods that affect how you look and feel. "e skin is our largest organ and functions like a mirror of what's going on inside the body," Snyder explains. "Fruits and vegetables have powerful minerals and enzymes that promote beauty from the inside out." e fibre-packed glowing green smoothie (see recipe below) is one of Snyder's beauty detox foundations. It's an easy way to incorporate a large amount of greens into your diet - just one serving contains more than three cups of dark leafy green vegetables, which is more than most people eat in a week. Snyder says: "All the nutrients and vitamins and minerals get into your system and the fibre cleans you out. Even if you don't change the rest of your diet and have this smoothie instead of your usual breakfast, this can make a real difference." A beauty detox is about making progress, not perfection, according to Snyder. She suggests starting off by drinking hot lemon and water in the mornings, swapping dairy cheese for goat's cheese, and if you can't resist chocolate, switch to good quality dark stuff. QUICK FIXES You won't wake up looking like a supermodel after a day of healthy eating but there are quick fixes to help kick-start your body beautiful mission. Snyder says: "If you're gearing up for summer there are speedy tricks to give you a boost but often people start to feel and look good and want to continue." She suggests aiming to consume the juice of two lemons a day, whether it's with water or squeezed onto salads or spinach: "Lemon supports your liver and has lots of vitamin C so it will assist with your beach body goals." Aim to order your meals light to heavy, throughout the day, avoiding a big lunch you will struggle to digest. If you're feeling bloated, drink natural cranberry concentrate an hour before bedtime, diluted with water. "A lot of people hold 'water weight', which makes you look puffy, especially if you consume a lot of salt," Snyder explains. "Cranberry concentrate makes your kidney push out the excess salts and water." Just a few tweaks to your daily diet and you should see results in as little as three days, according to Snyder: "e combination of losing the water weight and getting the energy from the glowing green smoothie - your skin starts to glow, your eyes look brighter, and extra weight starts to fall off."
5 0 J U LY 2 0 1 3
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y BEAUTY BOOSTERS Certain foods and ingredients have beautifying properties that you can incorporate into your everyday diet. Snyder recommends: ● Pumpkin seeds are a major beautifying food, as they are loaded with our beauty minerals zinc, calcium, potassium and magnesium, as well as B vitamins and collagen-repairing vitamin C and vitamin E. ● Lemon is an amazing cleanser with more than 200 enzymes. It is one of the most restorative foods for the liver. ● Parsley is rich in beauty vitamins A and C, folic acid and has flavonoids that act as antioxidants to help stop free radicals that can damage cells and speed up ageing. ● Turmeric is an ayurvedic spice that has amazing antioxidant properties. It inhibits oxidation and protects from free radical damage, and also helps clean up metabolic waste and supports the liver. ● Red peppers are bursting with vitamins A, C and K. e important antioxidant vitamins A and C help prevent cell damage and premature ageing, and reduce inflammation. ey can also help strengthen collagen, helping to reduce cellulite. GLOWING GREEN SMOOTHIE Snyder swears by the GGS (Glowing Green Smoothie) to really make a difference to your diet. "It's an amazing thing to do for summer and bikini season. You get a lot of energy and your skin starts to glow," she says. Here's how to make one using a blender: 500ml water ½ head of organic spinach 1 head organic romaine Juice of ½ organic lemon 3-4 sticks organic celery 1 organic banana 1 organic pear 1 organic apple Method Fill the blender with the water, spinach and romaine and blend until smooth. Add the celery, apple and pear and blend until smooth. Add the lemon juice and banana for the final blend and enjoy!

Venetian Plaster
FROM RENAISSANCE TO MODERN RESURGENCE
V
enetian Plaster may be a phrase many are unfamiliar with in the UK. With its roots in renaissance Venice, Stucco Veniziano or “polished plaster”, as our British construction industry lovingly if not so tastefully calls it, has seen a surprising resurgence in Modern times due to the inventive new ways of using it being developed and the high end designers and architects use of it in prestigious work. We caught up with John Hudson of Italian Venetian, one of a growing number of serious UK based craftsmen presenting these beautiful finishes. John is currently opening a new and unique showroom in the heart of the old city, Saint Albans. “Venetian plaster has been around a long time, since roman times, but it was developed in Venice in the 16th – 17th century. Venice was the financial capital of the world, the buildings were adorned with marble to the point that the foundations were sinking into the lagoon bed. Using slaked lime and crushed marble dust and bits of old brick for colour, Stucco Veniziano or Venetian plaster was re-born. The recipe has developed again; the original recipe has always had great characteristics, anti-mould, anti-bacterial, completely natural and green,
5 2 J U LY 2 0 1 3
breathable, and now with modern techniques really fits from rustic to clean architecture”
“The Venetian plaster is mixed and tinted to any colour, we can match most colours. It is wet applied to walls, ceilings, any surface really. Most of our work is on feature walls to give that luxurious wow factor to any room, in bathrooms and wet rooms – What is great about this stuff is that it is unique. Every applicator has their own style. The finished product flows organically, there are no grout lines and no mould stains after a few months, it is right at home in a warm moisture rich environment. It is comparable in price as well, as it is usually charged per metre fully fitted. With tiles you can pay £100 per metre and then have to get a good tiller in to make them shine. Our average rate fully fitted is £100 per metre.” John wants to bring this to middle England. We visited Johns’ showroom in Saint Albans, and were absolutely amazed that we had never heard of or seen this before. I am sure that the reader is still unsure as to what exactly it is. Suffice it is to say that it has to be seen in the flesh. The answer is frankly given by Italian Venetian; “Look, this finish has been around for a long time. Mass produced tiles and wallpapers are very profitable
for the big DIY stores, but the choice is very narrow, with emphasis being put on dressing the walls. Our finishes take the room to another level. This art is usually learned by good decorators and plasterers, who offer it as an option to their customers, but as it is not in the consciousness of the public it can be a hard sell. It just doesn’t photograph well, the image is always flattened. But when you see it in the flesh it washes over the senses and it really is a delight to see the same reaction from anyone who visits the shop.” Whatever we end up settling on as a name for this stuff, It is quietly becoming London’s best kept decorative secret. For years the homes of those in the know have seen Venetian plaster work, it is specified in design and architects drawings on very modern sharp works, such as the flagship Audi showroom on Berkley street, Piccadilly, a unique finish developed by Italian Venetian with Audi. Italian Venetian is opening a showroom on George street St. Albans in the courtyard of the Secret Garden cafe on the 24th May, we can’t wait to see it! A
fter the truly inspirational Olympic year the country is continuing its winning streak, with Andy Murray holding up the Wimbledon trophy for the first time for Britain in 77 years, the Lions doing their stuff in fine style, and even a possibility of great results in the Ashes. This all points to a new high in interest in sport and physical fitness, and the regimes that make it happen - like swimming. Last year, inspired by London 2012, Origin launched its Olympic range of pool houses, anticipating this swing to healthy relaxation. They have already built many of these fitness motivated architect designed schemes, and their clients are enjoying the healthy fun of swimming with their families as never before. A world of difference... Established over thirty years, the company still handles every element of the design and building process, without bringing in any outside contractors whatsoever. Origin takes the process from beginning to end, with speed and efficiency. From concept to completion… Origin’s architects and designers bring a wealth of experience and bright ideas to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Many members of the pool house building teams have been involved since the very early days of the company. Building an indoor pool house is a complex business, so many of Origin’s buildings are based on the company’s established styles. For example, The Panorama has a light, airy construction with a bright glazed lantern roof – and is created to co-ordinate with the style of your home. The Barn has all the appearance of a country barn conversion, but is built to current construction standards to be the perfect home for a superb heated pool. The Olympic has exceptional designer looks and a wide expanse of glass bringing a real indoor/outdoor feel to your swimming. These established styles come 5 4 J U LY 2 0 1 3
in a wide range of standard sizes, and form the basis of many of Origin’s bespoke projects. Your heated pool will be in a style of your choice. Bespoke designs… Origin is recognised as the foremost designers of one-off buildings and extensions, designed and developed to co-ordinate with their surroundings perfectly. Materials and finishes are carefully matched with the existing structure – so the finished result is a handsome extension to the property, hiding a luxurious heated pool. Outdoor swimming too… Origin is aware that many people prefer to swim in the sun (or under the stars) and an outdoor pool can be one of the most aspirational features a home can have. The level of skill and understanding of pool technology has helped Origin to become one of the country’s foremost outdoor pool providers. All the details… As well as redesigning and updating their interactive website, and producing a new range of publicity material, Origin has also committed to a monthly email newsletter, eNews, to announce the latest and greatest improvements the company has been working on, and of course show the pick of the recent triumphs.

Martin McDonagh owner of Ripples Harpenden suggests when planning a bathroom think of the function of the room and who will be using it? You can then answer many questions about material, products, layout and storage. The bathroom needs to work for you on a daily basis, so whether that is bathing or showering the room needs to be designed to fit your requirements. “What’s yours is mine and what’s mine belongs to the company” The Supreme Court recently made a landmark ruling in relation to the financial settlement in divorce proceedings where the wife claimed family assets were being held on trust on behalf of the husband. This important ruling is discussed by Aileen Hartnett, Head of Family Law at Taylor Walton solicitors together with the implications for future divorce cases where “family assets” are controlled through a company. “What’s yours is mine and what’s mine belongs to the company” is a proposition that a sole shareholder and company director sought to persuade a court to accept in divorce proceedings. The issue was considered in the recent Supreme Court case of Prest v Petrodel Resources Ltd and Others (PRL). The question was whether the proposition is available where one party in divorce proceedings controls a company which holds assets that the other party considers to be matrimonial assets which should be considered by the court. In this case, the wife maintained that seven properties, including the matrimonial home, held by the companies under her husband’s control formed part of the “matrimonial pot”. The husband argued that the properties were not his but belonged to the companies and so remained outside of the court’s consideration. On the evidence before the court PRL was incorporated on 4 May 1993 but did not begin operations until April 2002. The properties were purchased by the husband, directly and indirectly, and transferred to PRL and another off shore company One was purchased in 1991 by the husband and later transferred to PRL for £1, as was another property. The other properties were subsequently purchased in his name or those of close relatives and off shore companies. The properties included the matrimonial home acquired in 2001. The seventh and final property was purchased in 2004
controlled the company. In addition the court took into account that the family occupied the matrimonial home, paid no rent to the company and that the husband retained a degree of control over the matrimonial home that was inconsistent with the company having a beneficial interest. ii Overall the seven properties registered as owned by the companies were beneficially owned by the husband and held on trust for him. In deciding this they upheld the decision of the Lower Court that the properties should be transferred to the wife as part of the divorce settlement. iii The court also emphasised the importance attached to the duty of divorcing parties to make full and frank disclosure of all material facts to enable the court to exercise its powers appropriately. It is important to note that in this case the Supreme Court did not look through the companies – often referred to as ‘piercing the corporate veil’ – to reach its conclusions. The separate legal entity of the companies was not affected by the decision in this case. There is no guarantee that courts will always react in this way but there is a real possibility that the corporate veil could be pierced where there has been a deliberate action by one party to interpose a company under their control to frustrate a divorce settlement.
Having regard to when and how the properties were purchased the wife’s case on appeal was that the beneficial ownership of all seven properties held by the companies lay with the husband.
This is an important judgment and one that should serve as a warning to divorcing parties the court expects complete disclosure of assets. Where this is lacking judges in the family courts can ‘draw on their experience’ and take notice of the inherent probabilities when deciding what an uncommunicative ‘spouse’ is likely to be concealing.
The Supreme Court found that these residential properties owned by the companies had nothing to do with their oil business and were held on trust for the husband who was the beneficial owner. The court took into account how the properties had been acquired by the companies and in an unanimous ruling decided that the properties could be transferred to the wife to satisfy an earlier judgment in her favour.
The court emphasised that “there is a public interest in spouses making proper provision for one another, both during and after their marriage, and in particular where there are children to be cared for and educated” and reminded divorcing parties that they have a duty not only to one another but also to the court to make full and frank disclosure of all material facts which are relevant to the exercise of the court’s power, including their resources.
In reaching their decision the court considered i W hether assets held in the legal ownership of the company could be beneficially owned by the husband as the controller of the company. As one of the properties held by PRL was the matrimonial home, the court inferred that it was held on trust for the husband who owned and 6 6 J U LY 2 0 1 3

Land for development? Are you wondering how to make the most of your LAND? If you have a home with development potential like the one below, you will probably have received letters from builders, developers and estate agents. You probably know that you can choose how to sell the land: • Sell the site subject to planning • Get planning yourself then sell it • Build the new home and sell that • Do a joint venture with a reputable builder
Before – 1 house and garden
Site sold subject to planning
After – 2 large detached houses
If you are wondering how to maximise your land value – give us a call, we’re able to help with any of the four methods of sale and can work with you to maximise the land value.
In many cases, landowners prefer our developer contacts to seek planning at their own expense so you can remain free from costs and planning expenses. Please call quickly, we have builders chasing us for land and we recommend acting now before the CIL (tax) is introduced which can seriously reduce the value of your land. Lance Trendall

SANDBANKS YACHT CO.

EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED FROM LIVING BY THE SEA
andbanks Yacht Co. is fast becoming the most anticipated marine lifestyle development of its kind on the South Coast. Luxury residential properties will sit alongside bespoke dining, boating and fitness amenities, resulting in this development having huge appeal to both property hunters and local residents alike. Nine architect designed coastal properties form the centrepiece of the development, which will also encompass a Restaurant, Café, Gym, Boatyard and 155 swinging moorings. Developer, Roundset Westingly explains the vision for the development. “e brief for the scheme was to create nine contemporary coastal homes, taking inspiration from the surroundings, offering high end specification, modern contemporary design and incorporating lifestyle amenities to compliment them. e three waterfront properties, Newport House, Lulworth House and Rhode House are already an iconic feature of Poole Harbour and match their stunning location in every detail of their design and specification. e exteriors are dramatic

with some echoes of ships bows, which resonate with the waterfront location.” e Newport House show home, on the waterfront recently launched to rave reviews, with praise in particular being given to the quality of the build and specification. Gemma Martin, interior designer and owner of GM Designs explains the interior design concept, “e design ethos behind this project was to be sympathetic to the environment, serene and calm, without drawing away from the show stopping view. e space is light, airy and bright so that when the sun is shining, the design compliments the view and yet when the sea is rough and stormy, you feel warm and sheltered. It was really important to show a lifestyle rather than a show home”. e development is not only about luxury living, it also boasts a restaurant, café with decked sun terrace, members’ lounge, state of the art gym offering personal training expertise, a therapy room and a dry berth boatyard with 155 deep and shallow swinging moorings. Sandbanks Yacht Co. will be offering membership packages, which
P R O P E RT Y
will include gym membership and discounts at the restaurant and café. “e focus of the club will be on family and getting out on the water” says Ellie Taylor, Membership Manager, “we offer plenty of opportunities for people to relax at SYC and unwind and look forward to inviting boaters and non-boaters alike. Whether your idea of enjoyment is getting out on the water by boat, kayak or paddleboard or enjoying a relaxing drink and taking in the view, Sandbanks Yacht Co has something to offer everyone. In the coming months members will be invited to a range of activities and events, and we look forward to making the club an all year round destination.” Jem Mills, Boatyard Manager, points out that SYC is not only for the experienced boater. “Don’t be afraid to come and ask for help, whether it be assisting you in buying the right boat, gaining more confidence with the boat you own or broadening your knowledge on the fabulous sailing waters in the area. Sometimes joining a new yacht club can be intimidating, but we pride ourselves on being friendly, helpful and professional.” Nigel Still, from Stephen Noble, sole agent for SYC says “is development is hugely exciting for Sandbanks. Never before has there been a development of this magnitude offering such a superb facility to the local community. The history of Luton Hoo O ver the years Luton Hoo has counted many heads of state and members of royalty among its visitors including Queen Mary, Edward VII and Lord Mountbatten. In 1947, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh spent part of their honeymoon in one of the mansion’s vast state bedrooms, and returned to celebrate future wedding anniversaries. There has been a house on the present site of Luton Hoo since at least 1601 when Robert Napier bought the estate. Today’s mansion house dates from the late 18th century when it was the seat of the 3rd Earl of Bute, then Prime Minister to George III. The famous landscape designer, Capability Brown, was engaged to redesign the surrounding parkland and gardens which now extend to 1,065 acres.
In 1903 Luton Hoo was bought by Sir Julius Wernher, a leading diamond dealer who commissioned Charles Mewes and Arthur Davis, the architects of the Ritz Hotel in London, to redesign the interior of Luton Hoo in a lavish Edwardian ‘Belle Époque’ style. After the death of Sir Julius, Harold Wernher inherited the estate from his father. During the Second World War, the estate and mansion house was commissioned by Eastern Command and played an important role in wartime operations testing tanks before they were taken off to depots for war service. On 26th June 1948, Sir Harold Wernher and his wife Lady Zia, Countess

Anastasia Mikhailovna de Torby, hosted a memorable visit by Sir Winston Churchill when 110,000 people gathered to hear him address the crowd and thank them for their support during the Second World War. Sir Harold and Lady Zia decided to exhibit Sir Julius’s art collection within the house in 1951 including several items of the now famous Fabergé collection. They also bred several well known race horses including Brown Jack, who won twenty five races in his ten year racing career and Charlottown, who won The Derby in 1966. Sir Harold died in 1973 followed by Lady Zia in 1977 with the estate passing to their elder grandson, Nicholas Phillips, who together with his wife developed the living accommodation into facilities for corporate functions and filming, to support the maintenance of the art collection. The house has been a very popular location with television and film makers, being used for films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Enigma, Eyes Wide Shut, Inspector Morse, Nicholas Nickleby, Vanity Fair and Bleak House to name but a few. Following Nicholas Phillips’ death in 1991 the estate was put up for sale in 1997 and was finally purchased by Elite Hotels in 1999. The Hotel opened in October 2007 following an investment of more than £60 million and a painstaking restoration programme.
