don’t mean the regular stuff of life such as bread, milk and washing powder, they are supposed to be boring and reliable, but all those other discretionary purchases, the things you want but don’t need, could be a lot more fun to obtain. As Britain’s high streets struggle to maintain their individuality, becoming a monotonous repetition of the same old brands, one place where originality is thriving is the auction house. At Fellows we offer an ever changing inventory of goods from high jewellery and luxury watches to antique furniture and vintage accessories. From one week to the next we do not know what will come in for sale, it may be a highly commercial item or a unique rarity, all we can say for sure is that once the item is offered and sold we never know when we will see another one. Articles for sale at auction come from a wide variety of sources, both trade and private. It is this breadth of supply that keeps the catalogues fresh and interesting meaning that if you want to buy a statement piece or talking point, something that none of your friends will have, an auction is the place to go. When buying anything pre-owned or antique, trust is a crucial element of the transaction. Fellows have been around since 1876 with a track record that speaks for itself. A dedicated team of specialists ensure that the authenticity of all items is checked, they are correctly described and the condition of the item is fully 16 JUNE2013
reported. is means that you can be sure of exactly what it is you are buying. So you have scoured the catalogues and found that unique watch /ring / handbag / figurine / pair of candlesticks, that will go so well on your wrist / finger / arm / mantelpiece / dining table and make you the envy of all your friends. Now comes the fun part, because an auction is not a shop, it is a competition, a test of nerve and a challenge to see who wants the item the most. Whether you attend in person or take advantage of modern technology to bid live from the comfort of your sofa it is a thoroughly involving and thrilling experience. Set your budget with care as the fun can run away with you and the desire to win, coupled with the lure of ‘just one more bid’, can catch you out. Don’t worry too much though, as however much you paid, someone else was in the chase until the end and you can be certain you have paid well below the equivalent retail price, even after commissions have been added. If you lose, pride yourself on your steely restraint, decide that the winner probably paid too much and prepare to hunt through the next round of catalogues for that one exceptional must-have purchase. Visit Fellows in person or online to see just how much fun your shopping could be. www.fellows.co.uk ■

Classics on the Common
ew would disagree with the recently expressed view of a Harpenden Town Councillor that Harpenden Common is ‘the jewel in the town’s crown.’ The vast tract of common grassland, sweeping you into the town centre as you approach from the south, is home to a golf club, a cricket club and the occasional fair and circus, yet still provides acres of recreational space for residents and visitors. But, for one day a year, this idyllic scene is interrupted for a few hours for the biggest classic car meeting of its kind in Britain. 1928 BENTLEY 4.5 LITRE
18 JUNE2013
Over the years we’ve had bright sun, clouds and occasional rain but whatever the weather nothing stops most of the pre-registered owners of more than 1000 classic vehicles from driving to Harpenden from all over the UK and beyond to display their lovingly-maintained vehicles. And there is never any shortage of admirers. Up to 10,000 spectators - residents and visitors - spend hours admiring the mouth-watering collection. Even in damp conditions the attendance is unexpectedly, and gratifyingly, high. 1932 ROLLS ROYCE

A ‘classic’ vehicle should be at least 20 years old but we usually have one or two built around a century ago, such as a 1900 Daimler Type A, and a 1913 model T Ford. Every decade following is always well represented, too, from Rolls Royces and Maseratis to Austin A40s and Morris Minors. We have even had a Sinclair C5. Classics on the Common was the brain-child of Harpenden resident and Metropolitan Police officer Peter Madden. The idea was born shortly after he bought a 1968 Rover P5B coupe and the first year attracted 125 cars. Since that time the event has grown steadily in popularity with owners and spectators. When Peter Madden decided to make the 2008 Classics his last, he asked the Harpenden Village Rotary Club to take over responsibility for organising and running the event. As members of a service organisation Rotarians are no strangers to running or helping with events and, with more than 40 members, we had a good deal of manand woman-power to offer. This year we are proud to be organising the 20th Classics on the Common. On the day, the Rotarians are at full stretch so we are very grateful to have our numbers boosted by members of our associated club, Harpenden Village Inner Wheel, Harpenden Explorer Scouts,
1961 DAIMLER
1980 CORVETTE C3
the St Albans and Harpenden Police Cadets and members of the Carpenters Arms Classics Car Club. Classics on the Common is a non-profit event but it does give the organisers an opportunity to raise funds for local, national and international charities. The classic car owners make a donation to register and, although there is no entry charge to the public, Harpenden’s townsfolk have always responded generously when approached with collecting buckets. Local businesses, pubs and restaurants lend support, too, by donating prizes for our tombola or taking banner advertising. In 2012 we raised a record £19,000. Various charities supported by Rotary benefited but the main recipients were Keech Children’s Hospice, Harpenden Mencap and Mercy Ships. This year the main beneficiaries will be Herts Air Ambulance, the Samaritans (Local Branch), Keech Children’s Hospice and Water Aid. The success of ‘Classics’ is not difficult to understand. For the proud owners it provides a display window for their treasured vehicles and, for the public, vicarious delight and admiration. www.classicsonthecommon.com

he award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is a London landmark, with one of the largest auditoria in London, and the oldest, professional, permanent outdoor theatre in Britain – a firm fixture of summer in the city, providing a cultural hub in the beautiful surroundings of a Royal Park. Its steeply raked auditorium is one of the largest in London with 1,240 seats, yet those who attend say it is one of the most intimate. Each night an incomparable atmosphere is created by the buzz of people enjoying their theatre-going in every sense: friends setting up hampers on the picnic lawn, filling their glasses with wine or drinking Pimms in the bar as the fairy lights twinkle in the trees. Yet the Open Air Theatre is not just about an amazing atmosphere, it is about remarkable storytelling too. Built upon a core of outstanding dramatic credentials, we aim to present bold and dynamic productions that stimulate the senses. PROMS FRIDAY 12TH JULY TO SATURDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER 2013 ROYAL ALBERT HALL, LONDON BBC RADIO 3, BBC TV AND ONLINE
T
Marin Alsop’s Last Night, Barenboim’s Ring Cycle and the returns of Nigel Kennedy and Doctor Who in the biggest ever broadcast Proms festival
he 2013 BBC Proms promises two months of many of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. Daniel Barenboim will conduct the first ever complete Wagner Ring Cycle at the Proms in one summer. His Staatskapelle Berlin will be joined by leading Wagner interpreters including Nina Stemme and Bryn Terfel (22nd – 28th July). With Promming tickets remaining at £5 for the eighth year running, audiences will be able to attend the complete Ring cycle for just £20. Marin Alsop makes Proms history by becoming the first woman to conduct the world-famous Last Night of the Proms. She will be joined by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and British violinist Nigel Kennedy, who appears earlier in the festival with a performance of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth continue with performances given by British orchestras and leading interpreters of his work: Tristan and Isolde with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Semyon Bychkov, Tannhäuser with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Donald Runnicles, and Parsifal with the Hallé under Sir Mark Elder. Fellow bicentenarian Giuseppe Verdi is celebrated with performances by two Italian orchestras, and the centenaries of two of the pre-eminent composers of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten and Witold Lutosławski, are marked across 18 Proms. Throughout the festival there will be a complete Tchaikovsky symphony cycle and a selection of some of the more rarely performed piano concertos including Malcolm Arnold’s Concerto for two pianos (three hands), Glazunov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Stravinsky’s Concerto for piano and wind instruments. The BBC’s Doctor Who celebrates 50 YEARS on our screens with his third visit to the Proms while there are firsts with an Urban Classic Prom featuring Fazer, Laura Mvula and Maverick Sabre and a 6 Music Prom with Cerys Matthews, Laura Marling and The Stranglers. There are two Proms dedicated to music from the big-screen: John Wilson returns to the Proms with his eponymous orchestra for an evening of Hollywood glamour and the BBC Concert Orchestra perform classic British and American film scores. From the ‘vocal play’ of a cappella group Naturally 7, the first Prom dedicated to Gospel music, a rare performance of Frank Zappa’s The Adventures of Greggery Peccary to Les Siècles performing Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring on period instruments, there is a range of diverse musical offerings.
22 JUNE2013
Many well-loved Proms artists return to the festival in 2013 including... Stephen Hough on the First Night, Imogen Cooper, Midori, Mitsuko Uchida and star of last year’s Last Night of the Proms, Joseph Calleja, who as well as singing in a main evening Prom will appear alongside Nigel Kennedy at Proms in the Park. Kennedy will be making a mad-dash to Hyde Park from the Royal Albert Hall stage and back again in his first appearance at the Last Night of the Proms! The BBC Proms continues to celebrate youth with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain giving the first ever free main evening Prom performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. The National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America comes to the UK in its inaugural year with star American violinist Joshua Bell. The Proms Youth Choir, now in its second year, joins forces with the BBC Symphony Chorus on the First Night of the Proms to create a massed choir for Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony. In addition to the six BBC performing groups who once again provide the backbone to the season, there is a stellar line-up of international orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Lorin Maazel, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under newly appointed Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra with Jonathan Nott, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with Mariss Jansons. Gracing the Royal Albert Hall’s stage for the first time are the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. In the spirit of the Proms’ enduring mission to make the best classical music available to everyone, the 2013 Proms will be broadcast on more BBC platforms than ever before across BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Four. Every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and the audio streamed online in HD quality with additional broadcasts on Radio 1, 1Xtra, Radio 2, 4 Extra, 6 Music and the Asian Network. Online, for the first time ever Cadogan Hall Proms chamber music concerts, hosted by Petroc Trelawny, will be filmed for the BBC website and a selection will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Four. For full details of the season please visit: bbc.co.uk/proms Tickets are now on sale via bbc.co.uk/proms or 0844 209 7353 and in person at the Royal Albert Hall

The Championships Wimbledon 2013 MONDAY 24th JUNE – SUNDAY 7th JULY
Since the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world.
T
he All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon. In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally called Sphairistike, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship. The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final. The lawns at the Ground were arranged in such a way that the principal court was situated in the middle with the others arranged around it; hence the title ‘Centre Court’, which was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road opened by King George V. The foresight of building the present stadium, designed to hold 14,000 people, did more to popularise the game worldwide than anything that has happened to date. However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the
24 JUNE2013
Centre Court was once more at the centre of the tournament. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description. By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since. Enter the Ladies In 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles was started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883. Overseas Champions By the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and in 1905 May Sutton of the United States became the first Champion from overseas when she won the Ladies’ Singles. She repeated her success in 1907, the year when Norman Brookes of Australia became the first Gentlemen’s Singles champion from overseas. Since that year, only two players from Great Britain, Arthur Gore and Fred Perry, have
EV E N TS
managed to win the Men’s Singles while there have been five British Ladies’ Champions since Wimbledon moved to Church Road — Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer, Ann Jones and Virginia Wade. In 1980 Bjorn Borg of Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in the post-challenge round era; a feat replicated by Roger Federer between 2003 and 2007. In 1985 Boris Becker, aged 17, became the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. In 1987 Martina Navratilova of the United States became the first player to win the Ladies’ Singles six times in succession and in 1990 she attained the all-time record of nine victories in the event. Pete Sampras of the United States registered his seventh win in 2000 and in 2001, Goran Ivanisevic became the first wildcard to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year gone by without alteration to the ground or some organisational change taking place. In recent years, culminating in 2011, the momentum has increased and major works

programmes have provided improved facilities for the players, spectators, officials and media. Wimbledon 2013 Wimbledon 2013 will see the finest players from over 60 countries compete in the five main Championships events. In the second week of the Tournament, these players will be joined by Juniors, Veteran and Wheelchair competitors, playing in their own events on the Championships’ lawns. The All England Club, Wimbledon has announced that the total prize money at this year’s 127th Championships, will be £22.6million, an increase of 40% on 2012. Changes to the Order of Play The Club tries to play all matches on the courts and days published. However, occasionally it is necessary to switch a match from one court to another. This can be for a number of reasons. Some players remain involved in several events towards the end of The Championships and it may be necessary to move a match to avoid a clash. The Club tries to give similar rest periods between matches for players due to play each other.

The 2013 Ashes Summer at Lord’s Cricket Ground THURSDAY 18th – MONDAY 22nd JULY 2013
The second Investec Ashes Test Match between England and Australia will be hosted at the prestigious home of world cricket, Lord’s from Thursday 18th – Monday 22nd July.
W
ith just a month to go until the most celebrated rivalry in cricketing history, Lord’s Cricket Ground is gearing up to meet the anticipated high demand for general tickets, and to book its iconic meetings and events spaces. Cricket fans will travel from all over the UK and the world to experience the pure excitement of The Ashes, and this truly iconic venue. The term ‘Ashes’ was first used after England lost to Australia - for the first time on home soil - at The Oval on 29th August 1882.A day later, the Sporting Times carried a mock obituary of English cricket which concluded that: “The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”. The concept caught the imagination of the sporting public. A few weeks later, an English team, captained by the Hon Ivo Bligh [later Lord Darnley], set off to tour Australia, with Bligh vowing to return with “the ashes”; his Australian counterpart, WL Murdoch, similarly vowed to defend them. As well as playing three scheduled matches against the Australian national side, Bligh and the amateur players in his team participated in many social matches. It was after one such match, at the Rupertswood Estate outside Melbourne on Christmas Eve 1882, that Bligh was given the small terracotta urn as a symbol of the ashes that he had travelled to Australia to regain.
32 JUNE2013
On the same occasion, he met his future wife - Florence Morphy - who was the companion to Lady Janet Clarke, mistress of Rupertswood, and governess to the Clark children. In February 1884, Bligh married Florence. Shortly afterwards, they returned to England, taking the urn - which Bligh always regarded as a personal gift - with them. It stayed on the mantelpiece at the Bligh family home - Cobham Hall, near Rochester in Kent - until Bligh died, 43 years later. At his request, Florence bequeathed the urn to MCC. Today, over 75 years on, the tiny, delicate and irreplaceable artefact resides in the MCC Museum at Lord’s. Each year, it is seen by tens of thousands of visitors, from all parts of the world. In the 1990s, recognising the two teams’ desire to compete for an actual trophy, MCC commissioned - after discussions with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia - an urn-shaped Waterford Crystal trophy. This was first presented to Mark Taylor after his Australian side emerged triumphant in the 1998-99 Test series against England. Since then, the trophy has been presented to the winning captain at the end of each Test series between Australia and England. Most recently, it was presented to Andrew Strauss after England’s 3-1 victory over Australia in the 2010/11 Ashes Series. Marylebone Cricket Club was founded in 1787 - a fact gathered from a poster for a cricket match in 1837 announcing MCC’s Golden jubilee. Before then, however, aristocrats and noblemen played

their cricket in White Conduit Fields at Islington, London. Like shooting and fox-hunting, cricket was considered a manly sport for the elite - with plenty of gambling opportunities to boot. (Around £20,000 was bet on a series of games between Old Etonians and England in 1751!) As London’s population grew, so did the nobility’s impatience with the crowds who gathered to watch them play. In pursuit of exclusivity, they decided to approach Thomas Lord, a bowler with White Conduit CC, and asked him to set up a new private ground. An ambitious entrepreneur, Lord was encouraged by Lord Winchilsea to lease a ground on Dorset Fields in Marylebone - the site of the modern Dorset Square. He staged his first match - Middlesex (with two of Berkshire and one of Kent) versus Essex (with two given men) - on 31st May 1787. Thus Marylebone Cricket Club was formed. A year later, it laid down a Code of Laws, requiring the wickets to be pitched 22 yards apart and detailing how players could be given out. Its Laws were adopted throughout the game - and MCC today remains the custodian and arbiter of Laws relating to cricket around the world. After a short stay at Marylebone Bank, Regent’s Park, between 1811 and 1813, Lord’s moved to a new rural ground - previously the site of a duck pond - in St John’s Wood in 1814. It remains MCC’s home to this day. The ground was soon a major success and attracted hordes of players and spectators forcing Lord to build a Pavilion and refreshment stalls. In 1805, the dukes and earls were keen to see their sons play cricket and so hired the ground for an Eton versus Harrow schools cricket match - the start of a world-famous, and on-going, tradition. In 1825, when Thomas Lord was 70, he sold the ground to a Bank of England director, William Ward, for £5,000. Having provided the Marylebone Cricket Club with a ground for 38 years, Lord retired and then died seven years later - but his name lives on. That same year (1825), the Pavilion - housing scorecards, records and trophies - was destroyed in a fire. Work commenced immediately on a replacement, which opened the following year. At the time, the wicket was ‘prepared’ before a match by allowing sheep to come in and graze on the grass. However, the Club subsequently acquired its first mowing machine and appointed its first groundsman in 1864. In the 1870s, MCC decided it wanted to get involved in county cricket, which was growing in popularity, and, in 1877, it invited Middlesex to adopt Lord’s as its county ground - an arrangement which continues over 125 years later.
NICK COMPTON
MCC’s next step towards establishing itself as cricket’s most influential body involved its development of a relationship with Australia, where emigrants had started playing the game competitively. So in 1877 James Lillywhite and an England side boarded a steamer and travelled for eight weeks before playing Australia in the first official Test match - although it was not until 26 years later, in 1903, that MCC undertook official responsibility for England’s tours ‘down under’. One of MCC’s most famous players, Dr WG Grace, from Gloucestershire, gave the Club even greater recognition through his monumental performances and stature. A painting of him by A.S. Wortley was presented to the Club in 1890 and still hangs in the famous Long Room. In 1889, the foundation stone was laid for a new Pavilion, paid for by a £21,000 loan from William Nicholson, who had made his fortune from distilling gin. A year later it was opened in time for the new season. It is now a listed building and one of the most famous landmarks in world sport. At the turn of the century, the Board of Control for Test Matches, the Advisory County Cricket Committee and the Imperial Cricket Conference were all set up to cater for the growth in domestic, imperial and other international cricket. These bodies existed until 1968 when there was a major reorganisation of cricket in England. Since MCC was a private club it could not receive public funds, so it set up a Cricket Council as the governing body of cricket and the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB) to administer the professional game. It also converted its MCC Cricket Association into the National Cricket Association (NCA) to look after the recreational game. As a result, cricket started to receive financial help from the Government. In the 1990s, the structure was changed again with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) taking over responsibility for all cricket in England from the TCCB, NCA and Cricket Council. MCC is determined to ensure that Lord’s remains world-class, as well as world-famous. MCC has recently been investing even more money to ensure that Lord’s has both a unique historic appeal and truly state-of-the-art sporting facilities. Announcements will be made of players via the Lord’s Cricket Ground website shortly. www.lords.org

The history of Luton Hoo O ver the years Luton Hoo has counted many heads of state and members of royalty among its visitors including Queen Mary, Edward VII and Lord Mountbatten. In 1947, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh spent part of their honeymoon in one of the mansion’s vast state bedrooms, and returned to celebrate future wedding anniversaries. There has been a house on the present site of Luton Hoo since at least 1601 when Robert Napier bought the estate. Today’s mansion house dates from the late 18th century when it was the seat of the 3rd Earl of Bute, then Prime Minister to George III. The famous landscape designer, Capability Brown, was engaged to redesign the surrounding parkland and gardens which now extend to 1,065 acres.
In 1903 Luton Hoo was bought by Sir Julius Wernher, a leading diamond dealer who commissioned Charles Mewes and Arthur Davis, the architects of the Ritz Hotel in London, to redesign the interior of Luton Hoo in a lavish Edwardian ‘Belle Époque’ style. After the death of Sir Julius, Harold Wernher inherited the estate from his father. During the Second World War, the estate and mansion house was commissioned by Eastern Command and played an important role in wartime operations testing tanks before they were taken off to depots for war service. On 26th June 1948, Sir Harold Wernher and his wife Lady Zia, Countess

Anastasia Mikhailovna de Torby, hosted a memorable visit by Sir Winston Churchill when 110,000 people gathered to hear him address the crowd and thank them for their support during the Second World War. Sir Harold and Lady Zia decided to exhibit Sir Julius’s art collection within the house in 1951 including several items of the now famous Fabergé collection. They also bred several well known race horses including Brown Jack, who won twenty five races in his ten year racing career and Charlottown, who won The Derby in 1966. Sir Harold died in 1973 followed by Lady Zia in 1977 with the estate passing to their elder grandson, Nicholas Phillips, who together with his wife developed the living accommodation into facilities for corporate functions and filming, to support the maintenance of the art collection. The house has been a very popular location with television and film makers, being used for films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Enigma, Eyes Wide Shut, Inspector Morse, Nicholas Nickleby, Vanity Fair and Bleak House to name but a few. Following Nicholas Phillips’ death in 1991 the estate was put up for sale in 1997 and was finally purchased by Elite Hotels in 1999. The Hotel opened in October 2007 following an investment of more than £60 million and a painstaking restoration programme.

Bonhams to sell John Lennon’s first car... a Ferrari
T
The 1965 330GT 2+2 Coupé was bought by the Beatles singer for £6,500 on the day he passed his driving test. It is estimated to realise between £180,000 and £220,000 at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on 12th July 2013
he Ferrari, personally selected by Beatles singer/songwriter John Lennon as his first car, is the latest important motor car to join the line-up for the Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester, West Sussex, on Friday 12th July.
In February 1965 The Beatles recorded Ticket to Ride – a song that would become one of their biggest hits, topping both the UK and US singles charts. By happy coincidence, that same month, the news that Lennon had passed his driving test made headlines across the country. Within hours, the road outside the security gates of his Kentwood home in Weybridge, Surrey, was jammed with Maseratis, Aston Martins, and the Jaguar E-type, as luxury car dealerships – hungry for business – spotted an opportunity to secure a high-profile client. The singer, by then a father to 22-month-old Julian by his first wife Cynthia, strolled out to inspect the cars and chose a right-hand drive Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Coupé finished in Azzuro blue paint, with a blue interior, priced at £6,500 (equivalent to just over £110,000 in today’s money). Motor vehicles were to become a passion for Lennon, no more so than this Ferrari, which he used for the best part of three years, until October 1967… covering more than 20,000 miles. By the late 1980s, this special car was with the famous Modena Ferrari dealership, from where it was acquired by its current owner. Painted red

and separated from its number plate, it was then lovingly restored to its original specification. Offered for sale by Bonhams with its original DUL 4C registration restored by the DVLA, this matching-numbers* motor car is one of only 500 of its type built and is estimated to realise between £180,000 and £220,000 at the auction. It is offered for sale along with a history file documenting its provenance and restoration, which also includes correspondence with Lennon. Sholto Gilbertson, Senior Specialist in the Bonhams Motor Car Department, said: “It is a wonderful commentary on the early excitement generated by Beatlemania that John Lennon didn’t even have to leave his house to buy his first car. We are delighted to be offering a car associated with such an icon of contemporary popular culture at the first of our Goodwood series of auctions in 2013. Already our Festival of Speed Sale is shaping up to potentially eclipse last year’s record-breaking total.” *A matching-numbers motor car is one in which the numbers stamped on the engine and the chassis match, and are the same as those originally fitted by the factory during construction. 50 GALLARDO
years of the luxury that is Lamborghini
2013 marks the 50th Anniversary of Lamborghini. The company’s history is one of challenges and uncontested records, set by its founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini, who decided to create the world’s most beautiful, and powerful super sports cars.
F
erruccio Lamborghini was born in 1916, this capable, impetuous, strong-willed Taurus was the leading character in the foundation of the company and the early phases of its extraordinary history. Ferruccio was a very wealthy man, following World War II, he founded his tractor factory, but by the early 1960s, Lamborghini knew exactly what he wanted... to build a super sports car to compete with Ferrari. Constructing that kind of car was viewed by others as an unexplainable extravagance, and something that would squander his fortune without ever turning a profit. But Lamborghini had done his homework, and started working on his project in 1962, and by May 1963 he had already founded ‘Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini’, buying land in Sant’Agata Bolognese, to build a large ultramodern factory. The first model was naturally put out quickly, for its official presentation at the Turin Auto Show in November 1963. The debut of the Lamborghini in a narrow but fiercely competitive market – shared until
then by Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin and Jaguar – certainly created a stir. Sceptics seriously doubted Lamborghini’s ability, but those who knew him well simply commented: “wait and see, because Lamborghini knows what he’s doing.” In 1964, the body’s first design was redone completely to make it more attractive to the public, and he thus turned to the famous Milan-based Carrozzeria Touring. The changes made created a line that became a classic: original but without being extreme. The 350 GT was born. The speedy two-seater Berlinetta had everything to attract customers. Lamborghini, the tireless promoter of his own company, did not hesitate to go about with his creation to show it off to the world. The immediate and almost inevitable offshoot of the 350 GT, was the 400 GT. Its engine was increased to a four-litre model and it featured the first gearbox designed in-house by Lamborghini. Thus, by early 1965 the coupes from Sant’Agata were starting to be noticed. Sales gradually started to increase, although these figures were obviously small, given the elite target. This was the first, great phase of the Lamborghini company. Between 1965 and 1966, the company presented an astonishing number of new models. Although cars like the 3500 GTZ, 350 Spyder by Touring and the Monza 400 were essentially prototypes, the seemingly extravagant chassis presented at the Lamborghini stand during the 1965 Turin Auto Show was destined to have a profound impact on the history of the company and on the entire automotive industry. In October 1967, just three years after its hesitant debut in Turin, Lamborghini arrived at the Italian Auto Show with an extraordinary lineup. By this time, the range of cars was truly impressive. Lamborghini could now look towards the future far more optimistically, with a flood of orders for the Miura and unparalleled interest and publicity. Lamborghini had been right on target. Lamborghini thus became a symbolic name in the auto world, the emblem of excess, going ‘further’ at all costs. The Miura was the most fashionable car of its day, essentially equivalent to the Mini, albeit at the other end of the price scale. It was a car that the very wealthy simply had to have, because it was a symbol, for it was a car that, like no other, expressed the audacity, gusto for living and freedom to travel that characterised the era. Almost inevitably, overnight it became the favourite among playboys, film stars, industrialists, musicians and royalty around the world: anyone who really counted drove a Miura, or at least had one on order. The Shah of Persia, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were just a few of the loyal customers who bought this car, and Lamborghini became a familiar name to them. Luck continued to smile on the Miura. The clear improvement in its overall quality, which came about with the S version, bolstered its market position. While Lamborghini continued to produce as fast as possible, it couldn’t keep up with orders received from around the world. 1970 also brought in several innovations, in October, a special VIP version of the Espada was presented, with a range of luxury finishes that were unusual for the period, such as air conditioning, a bar and a television. In 1971, Lamborghini was at the peak of its success. In less than eight years, 46 JUNE2013

Ferruccio had accomplished his goal: from nothing, he had created a car that was not only famous around the world, but had also become nothing short of a legend. Production of the Countach began at the end of 1973 with the bright-green model exhibited at the Paris Motor Show.. The model range for 1974 thus included the Countach, the Espada Series III, the Jarama S and the Urraco S. Delivery of the first Countachs began. The company continued to look ahead, attempting to satisfy market requirements. The success that Porsche had demonstrated that there were always plenty of car buffs around the world who were willing to spend substantial sums of money on a high-performance convertible. And while legislation worldwide was moving towards a progressive ban of canvas-topped convertibles, the expedient used by the German car – a wide roll-bar and solid rear window, with only a removable mid-roof section – was welcomed widely. Inspired by this concept and using the excellent mechanical basis of the nowperfected Urraco P300, Lamborghini decided to develop a Urraco model with a removable roof panel. The Silhouette was an aggressive model and had the 3-litre 260 hp V8 engine of the Urraco P300, and was presented in Italy in February 1976 at a list price of nearly 15 million lire. Obviously, this steep price tag ended up sharply limiting its circulation, and with only 54 units, it is one of the rarest and most exclusive Lamborghinis. Fortunately, the allure of these cars, a name that had now become a legend, aroused enormous interest in the company. As soon as it was put up for liquidation, it had a number of admirers lined up to take it over. The wealthy owners of a sugar empire in Senegal and, naturally, sports car lovers, were entrusted. The Mimran brothers, immediately set out to reconstruct the company. The ‘Nuova Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini SpA’ company was thus formed in 1981 and from that moment on, work was seriously underway again. Lamborghini went to the Geneva Motor Show in March 1981, exhibiting a Miura, and the Countach S with its large rear wing. However, the most tangible and reassuring sign of the new path undertaken by Lamborghini came with the first appearance of the Jalpa, a mature and well-finished evolution of the rare Silhouette, whose V8 engine was expanded to 3.5

litres to produce 255 hp, and an overall updating in terms of styling and ergonomics. The Jalpa (P350) was not an entirely new product, but it was a well-made and convincing car. The renaissance of the new Lamborghini came about not only through the production of the Countach, still in great demand among connoisseurs, but also through this model. It seemed that, finally, Lamborghini’s luck had turned. Through the shrewd reconstruction work spearheaded by the Mimran brothers and Emil Novaro, the revival of Lamborghini was firmly established by this time. Then suddenly, there came a bolt out of the blue. In April 1987, ‘Nuova Automobili Lamborghini SpA’ was taken over by the US Chrysler company. In 1987, the French Formula 1 team Larrousse asked Mauro Forghieri, the celebrated designer of Ferrari’s finest models from the 60’s and 70’s, to create a new engine, and he turned to Lamborghini with the proposal. Forghieri designed his engine, a V12 with a 3.5-litre capacity, the maximum displacement allowed by regulations. A new parallel structure, separate from Lamborghini and named Lamborghini Engineering, was established specifically for this engine. Ready within a matter of months, the new engine was officially demonstrated to the public in April 1988.
time, Ferdinand Piëch, the grandson of the legendary Professor Ferdinand Porsche, and the nephew of Porsche founder Ferry, was the chairman of the Volkswagen Group. Piech was immediately interested: he decided to move as quickly as possible. The first letter of intents between Audi and Lamborghini was signed in June 1998, and the contract for the complete and definitive transfer of all shares from the last Indonesian shareholder to the German company was completed on 27th July of the same year, just 50 days later. The first major innovation came in 2001 with the successor to the Diablo: the Murciélago. Its power had also been boosted to 580 hp, increasing speed, muscle and acceleration. What had been augmented above all was the sensation of the overall quality of the car, with a level of finishing touches that was even better than the already excellent results of the last Diablos. Sales immediately went well, and Lamborghini can count on selling each one it makes, as these cars are reserved by customers well in advance. In celebration of its 50th Birthday, Automobil Lamborghini presents a very special super sports car with exclusive equipment and technology. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 720-4 50 Anniversario is a limited and numbered series of just 100 worldwide. Each unit has a Forged Composite badge with the 50 logo and a serial number. With its output increased to 720 hp, its new performance-oriented front and rear design, the special paintwork and unique interior trim, this Aventador is one of the most exclusive models ever produced in the history of Lamborghini.
Naturally, the news was sensational. The debut in Formula 1 racing of Lamborghini was a major event. The commitment and risk for the company were still rather limited, given that Lamborghini was simply supplying engines to the Larrousse team, which obviously pledged to pay for them. The engine showed excellent potential, and the results for 1990 were nothing short of brilliant. At the end of the British Grand Prix, Bernard won an extraordinary 4th place and Suzuki placed 6th. The best placement of the whole season came from Suzuki at the Grand Prix in Japan, as he placed 3rd and gave the company its first podium finish.
All Lamborghini models built in the 2013 anniversary year feature the 50th anniversary emblem in the cockpit. Like every Lamborghini, it is made using a combination of high-tech and artisanal craftsmanship.
The Mimran brothers’ decision to sell Lamborghini to Chrysler, a major company that mass-produced cars would be interested in purchasing a jewel like Lamborghini, but Chrysler’s sudden decision to sell the Bologna company to a group of unknown Indonesian investors seemed far more difficult to explain. This change of hands became official in January 1994, de-stabilising the company management.
Lamborghini will be appearing at Silverstone Classic, and will be the largest UK gather of Lamborghini’s in history. 100 Lamborghinis will be taking to the circuit for an amazing parade of classic and modern Lamborghinis. The manufacturer itself will have presence with a Lamborghini stand, positions alongside the Owner’s Club, displaying the new Lamborghini Aventador Roadster and other modern Lamborghinis.
In late 1996 Vittorio Di Capua was at the helm of the company. At this

A wall created entirely of cabinet shelves in a warm wood, peppered with antique handle details, displays a selection of exceptional archive pieces from across the designers career lit by the celebrated Crystal Bulbs from the Lee Broom collection. Elsewhere, signature pieces from the Lee Broom collection were selected by Louboutin to furnish the space including items from the Salon range, re-worked in patterned materials and a new colour palette of deep purples, greys and dusky pinks. I think it is important to say at this point that I am not over weight and I do train regularly. However I have a fair amount of cellulite on my hips and bottom, which is really unsightly, and I just cannot seem to shift it no matter how many squats I do! So it was my aim to target those areas in particular. My fears were elayed and nerves calmed when I was met at reception by the delightful and friendly nutritionist Lamiss. During our consultation I was given a print out of my body composition analysis which is very comprehensive and extremely in depth and interesting.
I could feel my body being toned! When the treatment was finished I felt refreshed and a little tingly but best of all I had lost 7 inches of my total body measurements.

vegetables have powerful minerals and enzymes that promote beauty from the inside out.” The fibre-packed glowing green smoothie (see recipe below) is one of Snyder’s beauty detox foundations. It’s an easy way to incorporate a large amount of greens into your diet - just one serving contains more than three cups of dark leafy green vegetables, which is more than most people eat in a week. Snyder says: “All the nutrients and vitamins and minerals get into your system and the fibre cleans you out. Even if you don’t change the rest of your diet and have this smoothie instead of your usual breakfast, this can make a real difference.” A beauty detox is about making progress, not perfection, according to Snyder. She suggests starting off by drinking hot lemon and water in the mornings, swapping dairy cheese for goat’s cheese, and if you can’t resist chocolate, switch to good quality dark stuff.
Glow on a detox
With bikini season looming, Hollywood nutritionist Kimberly Snyder tells Lisa Haynes how to get glowing on a beauty detox.

t might feel as though we’ve only just ditched our winter coats, but bikini season is just around the corner. If the late onset of summer means you’re still sporting dull, pasty skin and winter excess baggage on your body, look to your larder for a seasonal change of gear. As a Hollywood nutritionist and author of Beauty Detox Solution, Kimberly Snyder’s philosophy is that you can eat your way to radiant skin and an enviable body - no faddy diets or silly fasts required. Having helped countless high-profile celebrities prepare for the red carpet, her quick fixes could

transform you into a summer star too. “What we eat affects not only our weight and our overall health, but also our hair, skin and nails - all the features that make us beautiful. To unlock that beauty, one needs to cleanse from within,” Snyder says. So head to the supermarket and stock up on ingredients for a beautiful summer. Food philosophy Forget calorie and carb counting and look to the foods that affect how you look and feel. “The skin is our largest organ and functions like a mirror of what’s going on inside the body,” Snyder explains. “Fruits and
Quick fixes You won’t wake up looking like a supermodel after a day of healthy eating but there are quick fixes to help kick-start your body beautiful mission. Snyder says: “If you’re gearing up for summer there are speedy tricks to give you a boost but often people start to feel and look good and want to continue.” She suggests aiming to consume the juice of two lemons a day, whether it’s with water or squeezed onto salads or spinach: “Lemon supports your liver and has lots of vitamin C so it will assist with your beach body goals.” Aim to order your meals light to heavy, throughout the day, avoiding a big lunch you will struggle to digest. If you’re feeling bloated, drink natural cranberry concentrate an hour before bedtime, diluted with water. “A lot of people hold ‘water weight’, which makes you look puffy, especially if you consume a lot of salt,” Snyder explains. “Cranberry concentrate makes your kidney push out the excess salts and water.” Just a few tweaks to your daily diet and you should see results in as little as three days, according to Snyder: “The combination of losing the water weight and getting the energy from the glowing green smoothie - your skin starts to glow, your eyes look brighter, and extra weight starts to fall off.” Beauty boosters Certain foods and ingredients have beautifying properties that you can incorporate into your everyday diet. Snyder recommends: • Pumpkin seeds are a major beautifying food, as they are loaded with our beauty minerals zinc, calcium, potassium and magnesium, as well as B vitamins and collagen-repairing vitamin C and vitamin E. • Lemon is an amazing cleanser with more

It inhibits oxidation and protects from free radical damage, and also helps clean up metabolic waste and supports the liver.

Tried & Tested April Gray goes sci-fi in the bathroom with an LED whitening toothpaste. May 20 marks the start of National Smile Month, and quite frankly, my teeth aren’t up to par. They aren’t particularly stained but they’re far from a Hollywood smile, being more ‘beige’ than bright white. Before shelling out on expensive teeth whitening, I decided to try Blanx’s White Shock, a whitening toothpaste with a difference... It tastes the same as other toothpastes but it certainly didn’t look it, with an LED accelerator that glows every time the cap is unscrewed. The blue light is easy to attach to the refillable toothpaste and made cleaning my teeth a bit of a novelty! The idea is that the Actilux ingredient binds ‘microcrystals’ to the tooth enamel, forming an all-day invisible barrier that dissolves the stains that cause yellowing. Actilux is activated by light, so it works even in daytime but the LED intensifies the whitening action every time you squeeze toothpaste onto your brush. I used the toothpaste for almost four weeks and noticed my staining lifted a little but the effects weren’t dramatic. If you want results faster, the LED light can be used directly on your teeth by holding it in front of your month for one minute each day. With a refreshing minty taste and no abrasive silicon or peroxide, I’m giving this toothpaste the green light to use between professional whitening treatments or to keep pearly whites gleaming. The Ultimate Steel Window Replacement for
This modification enables you to blend in window replacements, ensuring a seamless transition between existing and new, which will be of particular interest if you are considering a large or phased refurbishment project. Both hinges and frames are finished with a tough powder coated paint and you can choose from over 200 RAL colours with different interior and external colours to compliment your chosen décor. The improved Polyamide thermal break and an “A” Window Rating ensure the Conservation Range meets all the new Building Regulations.
Best of Both Worlds
The Benenden™’s ultra-slim aluminium frames afford maximium light transmission and mimic the Crittall’s minimalist sightlines. They are fitted with the latest in Argonfilled sealed units so you benefit from excellent heat retention and noise reduction characteristics without ruining the look of your home. A range of matching handles and peg-stays enhance the period feel and a multipoint locking system ensures that your new windows not only look the part, but are secure as well. Additional security studs ensure that window casements, once locked in position, cannot be removed from the outside. Benenden™ frames are cleverly designed to fit both direct to brick or stone or into your existing timber sub-frames. In this case it’s possible to remove old casements and fit new without the need for redecoration afterwards. If however your timber work is damaged or rotten beyond repair then new frames can be ordered to match the originals. The Heritage Window Company has built an enviable reputation for quality products and customer service. Windows are installed by the company’s directly employed skilled fitters who work carefully to minimize disruption to the household. The company employs its own surveyor who carries out pre- and post-installation inspections to make sure that every job meets its own quality standards as well as the customers’ expectations. The result is a long list of satisfied clients who are only too happy to refer other customers, and a growing collection of testimonials which can be viewed at any of its showrooms in Beaconsfield, Dorking or Sevenoaks.
Period Properties
If you’re looking to replace traditional steel windows with something that closely resembles the originals, then you’ll love the latest offering from The Heritage Window Company. Based on the established Benenden™ Slimline Aluminium Window, the “Conservation Range” is a truly innovative product designed to take replacement steel windows to the next level. For the first time in a double glazed window, the Conservation Range offers working projection or barrel hinges designed to emulate the distinctive hinges seen on traditional steel windows more accurately than ever before. Sean Ballard, MD of The Heritage Window Company says “We can now exclusively offer a true replica of the original projection or barrel hinge adding complete authenticity to the Benenden™ range. Choosing this option ensures that owners of period properties can maintain the original aesthetics combined with the performance of a modern window.” The new range is the result of extensive consultation with conservation officers and emanates from a design that’s been in existence since the 1920’s. Using specially adapted hinges virtually identical to the original Crittall™ type, The Heritage Window Company have succeeded in producing an authentic functioning solution without compromising on appearance.

Venetian Plaster
FROM RENAISSANCE TO MODERN RESURGENCE
V
enetian Plaster may be a phrase many are unfamiliar with in the UK. With its roots in renaissance Venice, Stucco Veniziano or “polished plaster”, as our British construction industry lovingly if not so tastefully calls it, has seen a surprising resurgence in Modern times due to the inventive new ways of using it being developed and the high end designers and architects use of it in prestigious work. We caught up with John Hudson of Italian Venetian, one of a growing number of serious UK based craftsmen presenting these beautiful finishes. John is currently opening a new and unique showroom in the heart of the old city, Saint Albans. “Venetian plaster has been around a long time, since roman times, but it was developed in Venice in the 16th – 17th century. Venice was the financial capital of the world, the buildings were adorned with marble to the point that the foundations were sinking into the lagoon bed. Using slaked lime and crushed marble dust and bits of old brick for colour, Stucco Veniziano or Venetian plaster was re-born. The recipe has developed again; the original recipe has always had great characteristics, anti-mould, anti-bacterial, completely natural and green,
68 JUNE2013
breathable, and now with modern techniques really fits from rustic to clean architecture”
“The Venetian plaster is mixed and tinted to any colour, we can match most colours. It is wet applied to walls, ceilings, any surface really. Most of our work is on feature walls to give that luxurious wow factor to any room, in bathrooms and wet rooms – What is great about this stuff is that it is unique. Every applicator has their own style. The finished product flows organically, there are no grout lines and no mould stains after a few months, it is right at home in a warm moisture rich environment. It is comparable in price as well, as it is usually charged per metre fully fitted. With tiles you can pay £100 per metre and then have to get a good tiller in to make them shine. Our average rate fully fitted is £100 per metre.” John wants to bring this to middle England. We visited Johns’ showroom in Saint Albans, and were absolutely amazed that we had never heard of or seen this before. I am sure that the reader is still unsure as to what exactly it is. Suffice it is to say that it has to be seen in the flesh. The answer is frankly given by Italian Venetian; “Look, this finish has been around for a long time. Mass produced tiles and wallpapers are very profitable
for the big DIY stores, but the choice is very narrow, with emphasis being put on dressing the walls. Our finishes take the room to another level. This art is usually learned by good decorators and plasterers, who offer it as an option to their customers, but as it is not in the consciousness of the public it can be a hard sell. It just doesn’t photograph well, the image is always flattened. But when you see it in the flesh it washes over the senses and it really is a delight to see the same reaction from anyone who visits the shop.” Whatever we end up settling on as a name for this stuff, It is quietly becoming London’s best kept decorative secret. For years the homes of those in the know have seen Venetian plaster work, it is specified in design and architects drawings on very modern sharp works, such as the flagship Audi showroom on Berkley street, Piccadilly, a unique finish developed by Italian Venetian with Audi. Italian Venetian is opening a showroom on George street St. Albans in the courtyard of the Secret Garden cafe on the 24th May, we can’t wait to see it! For any enquiries or questions, John is available on 01727 837135.

ANTHONY O’CONNELL OUTSIDE THE COCKFOSTERS STORE
A Truly Magic Carpet (Company)
M
After 30 years serving customers in Edgware and Golders Green, Mowbray carpets is now in Cockfosters.
owbray pride themselves on offering the very best selection of carpets and floorings together with a top quality fitting service and guaranteed aftercare. “We have over 3000 carpets on show together with top quality hard flooring ranges. We are particularly proud of our selection of beautifully soft easy care carpets from the USA all produced using the latest environmentally friendly methods” said Anthony O’Connell at the Cockfosters store. “We find that people appreciate our full service from measuring to fitting. Carpets and floorings are a big purchase and we are always in the shop or on the end of the phone to offer advice or discuss your project. In these days of internet shopping we work even harder to maximise the benefits of customer service that we can offer and as we have the purchasing power of being in a large buying group we can also offer prices which we guarantee cannot be beaten anywhere” Anthony went on to say. Mowbray’s store is certainly easy on the eye with everything well laid out and easy to view. The colour palette of wool twist carpets along one wall is particularly impressive with every shade of every colour seemingly on show. If the colour that you want is not in Mowbray’s showroom then I don’t think it exists. Of course after you have chosen your carpet and Mowbray have measured and planned your job you need the fitters to provide the perfect installation. Let’s listen to Anthony again. “The fitting is the most important part of the job. Our fitters are all fully trained in house and our 3 principal fitters have
70 JUNE2013
all been with the company for over 10 years. We are unusual in the carpet business in employing our fitting staff. Most other companies including the big stores use sub contract labour who generally want to get the job done and out of the door as quickly as possible. Our fitters are given the time to do the job properly and if a little bit pops up or there is anything the customer is unhappy about our lads are always on hand to sort things out.” Mowbray also have lovely displays of ‘Karndean’ flooring with wood and tile effects to suit any area and ‘Quickstep’ laminate floors. “The latest technology used on these floors means they are 10 times more scratch resistant than floors without this protective layer” said Anthony. We are all encouraged to shop locally these days but we need the local shops to offer the goods and services that are right for us. Mowbray carpets certainly seems to fit the bill here. Their choice is very impressive and the staff all seem to know their stuff. I would certainly advise looking in on them next time you are searching for new carpets or flooring.

The de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre - the best kept secret in Hertfordshire A Brief History of Salisbury Hall and the Site of The de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Collection.
T
he site of the Hall and the Museum is, without doubt, a very old one. It is close to the first century BC settlement of Wheathamstead, the major Roman town of Verulanium and St. Albans which is of late Saxon foundation. Early notable (but unwelcome!) visitors to the area were probably Julius Caesar in 54BC, and Boadicea of the Iceni in 61AD. During the early 9th century the site was part of the Manor of Shenleybury. It was held by Asgar the Stallar, who was probably a high official to the Wessex King Egbert. After the Norman Conquest the Manor passed to the de Mandeville family who held it when the Doomsday Book was written in 1086. In 1380 the Hall passed in marriage to Sir John Montague, later Earl of Salisbury. It is perhaps at this time that the Manor acquired its now familiar name of Salisbury Hall. About 1420 Alice, Countess of Salisbury, married Sir Richard Neville, who became Earl of Warwick. He had two sons, Richard Neville (better known as Warwick the Kingmaker) and John, Marquis of Montagu, who were both killed at the Battle of Barnet in April 1471. A new house was built about 1507 by Sir John Cutte, Treasurer to King Henry VII and Henry VIII. The house was purchased in 1668 by James Hoare, a London banker. At this time the present house was built, bringing with it associations with Charles II and Nell Gwynne, who lived in a cottage by the bridge to the Hall. Her ghost is one that is said to have been seen in the Hall. The Hall passed to Sir Jeremy Snow’s nephew, John Snell, and from then through various hands, and during the latter
98 JUNE2013
part of the 19th century was occupied by a succession of farmers. However, about 1905 Lady Randolph Churchill, as Mrs. Cornwallis West, came here to live. Her son, Winston Churchill, became a regular visitor. During the 1930s Sir Nigel Gresley, of the London and North Eastern Railway, was in residence. He was responsible for the A4 Pacific Steam Locomotives one of which, Mallard, holds the world speed record for steam locomotives of 126.5 mph. Rumour has it that the name came from the ducks in the moat. In September 1939 the de Havilland Aircraft Company established the Mosquito design team in the Hall, the Prototype Mosquito, E0234/W4050, subsequently being built in the adjacent buildings. Nell Gwynne’s cottage was the centre of a silk worm farm, which supplied the silk for Her Majesty the Queen’s wedding and Coronation robes. Yet another royal connection. De Havillands left in 1947 and the Hall slipped into a derelict condition. However, in 1955 the Hall was taken in hand by an ex Royal Marine Major named Walter Goldsmith who restored it and opened it up to the public. He brought back the prototype Mosquito, E0234/W4050, as one of the attractions in 1959, an action which led to the establishment of the Mosquito Aircraft Museum. Walter Goldsmith sold the Hall in 1981 and since then it has been restored to a very high standard and remains in private ownership to this day.
