he magic of Monaco will truly be in evidence from the 24th May when this beautiful Principality hosts formula One’s 70th Grand Prix. In the words of Graham Hill, it’s the only Grand Prix where you meet lamp-posts, trees, nightclubs, houses, hotels, curbs, gutters and boats. For one glorious weekend in May Monaco becomes a festival of style, colour and ear-splitting noise, blended with glamourous members of the ‘jet set’ and stars of screen and stage. Remember, Cannes Film Festival is in full swing just along the coast and is the perfect warm-up act for Monaco’s Grand Prix. We especially love Monaco during this week because it just doesn’t sleep and its vibrant atmosphere after the excitement of the racing keeps on going. Stunning cocktails, fabulous restaurants, dancing and people watching all come to the fore, but what has been missing until 2012 has been a beach party.

Thankfully this year the secluded beach at Larvotto will play host to the exclusive Crazy Bear Beach Party. Champagne will be flowing, along with great barbecue food,, and guests will be dancing to Boy George’s DJ set, Shuffler,The brilliant Fun lovin Criminals and Eddie Jordan on drums with his band the Robbers. All this in addition to fire, Vaudeville and burlesque dancers. What more could we ask for? Entry to this epitome of chic is on a strictly ticket only basis and numbers are limited. You need to be a part of this night to remember – I have seen what the guys at Crazy Bear are capable of and I really wouldn’t want to miss it. NGS Celebrates 85 Years OF OPEN GARDENS IN HERTFORDSHIRE
T
he NGS or National Gardens Scheme raises money to support nursing, caring and gardening charities through open garden days and is particularly active in Hertfordshire. This year, the NGS reaches its 85th anniversary and will be celebrating its 1927 origins when 609 gardens ‘of quality and interest’ around the country opened their gates to the public for ‘a shilling a head’ as a fundraiser for the Queen’s Nursing Institute. Since then, the NGS has grown with the support of garden owners and volunteers to become the single largest benefactor for not only the Queen’s Nursing Institute, but also Macmillan, Marie Curie and Help The Hospices. Other beneficiaries of the NGS include

Cross Roads Care, Perennial (The Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Fund) and the National Trust. Of the 609 founder gardens, 120 are opening for the NGS this year to celebrate the 85th anniversary and here in Hertfordshire, we are lucky enough to have 3 of these wonderful gardens to visit, while at the same time supporting these very deserving and vital causes. The West Garden at Hatfield House offers an early season opening on Saturday 31st March (11am–5pm) where you can enjoy bluebells and wildflowers in the beech and oak Woodland Garden with its nineteenth century rhododendrons that
flourish alongside more recently planted shrubs. More formal garden styles are to be found in the Old Palace Garden with its box borders and mini maze, and linked by a pleached lime walk, the Sundial Garden features the recently installed Longitude Dial, surrounded by herbs-filled planters. Further north, in Whitwell, another garden with royal connections opens for the NGS on Sunday 22nd April (2–7pm) in the form of St Paul’s Walden Bury. Birthplace of the late Queen Mother and home to the Bowes-Lyons since the 1700s, this spectacular Grade 1 listed formal woodland garden features long undulating rides flanked by clipped beech hedges and offering
views to temples, statues and a large lake. Spring flowers flourish on the banks above the lake and in the woods, being allowed to seed for the following year before being cut back. The 60 acre space at St Paul’s Walden Bury has opened for the NGS every year since 1927, offering its garden visitors a unique insight into 18th century garden design with a particularly French influence. The third 1927 garden open for the NGS in Hertfordshire is Benington Lordship located just to the east of Stevenage. A midsummer opening on Sunday 7th June (12–5pm) provides visitors with an array of garden areas to discover around the Queen Ann manor house. This 7 acre garden created on the site
of a Norman castle takes a steep angled hillside into its stride as it rolls down and blends seamlessly with the surrounding parkland and lakes. The earthworks and ruined keep of the castle provide much of the structure and form of the garden and weaving paths and steps reveal planting surprises around every corner. The blend of formal box areas and neatly maintained hedges with the more relaxed herbaceous borders and the bountiful kitchen garden offers a variety of interest sure to be enjoyed by every kind of gardener. More information on these and other NGS garden openings can be found at www.ngs.org.uk.

Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant Revealed Sunday 3rd June 2012, 2pm - 6pm
T
he organisers of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant have revealed the details of the 1000-boat tribute to Her Majesty The Queen’s 60-year reign. One of the largest public events ever held in London, the Pageant will take place on the river from Battersea Bridge to Tower Bridge. The flotilla itself will be over seven miles long and will include some 25 miles of Thames river bank and pass under 14 bridges. It will take 70 minutes to pass any given point. This unique spectacle, inspired by a rich history and tradition of entertainment and theatre on the Thames, is expected to include 20,000 participants on the water, millions of spectators on the river banks and London’s public spaces, and a global 2 0 M AY 2 0 1 2
audience expected by the major broadcasters to number many hundreds of millions. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said, “I am proud that London can play such an important role in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and there couldn’t be a better start to an outstanding summer of aweinspiring events in the capital. The Thames Pageant and associated events around the capital will not only provide the most fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne but will be an amazing opportunity to show off to the world London’s pride in its heritage and traditions ahead of the Olympics” The Music herald Barges
The flotilla will be divided into ten sections, with music
herald barges separating each one. The Pageant’s music will be a diverse mixture of the contemporary and classical. The final music herald barge will be the London Philharmonic Orchestra, performing a British repertoire, including music by Benjamin Britten and Gustav Holst. The sequence oF The FloTilla
Heralded by The Royal Jubilee Bells, and led by Gloriana, the hand-built, 88-foot rowbarge, will include rowed and paddled vessels, modern row boats, kayaks and Dragon boats. The second section includes boats carrying the flags of the Commonwealth nations, Realms, Territories and Dependencies. Then comes the Royal
section, with support vessels from the former Royal Yacht Britannia, accompanying the Pageant’s flagship, the Royal Barge, The Spirit of Chartwell, on which The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, and other members of the Royal family will travel, decorated and adorned for the occasion at the head of the royal section of the flotilla. The Prince of Wales will play a key role on the day as Patron of the Pageant. This will be followed immediately by the Guard of Honour, the Dunkirk Little Ships, historic vessels, working boats, including steam boats and tugs, and then an array of leisure vessels, narrow boats and Dutch barges. The final two sections are designated for passenger vessels, allowing for significant public participation as part of the flotilla itself. Applications to take part from boat owners from the UK and the Commonwealth have been three times oversubscribed. The Pageant organisers made the final decisions on vessels selection, with advice from the Port of London Authority (PLA) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. BaTTersea Park JuBilee FesTival
As part of the planned entertainment for the Pageant, there will also be a festival held in Battersea Park, where visitors will be able to watch the flotilla as it passes by the park’s northern Thameside. Celebrating Continuity I
t is not surprising that the New Yard-O-Led Diamond Jubilee Ballpoint and Pencil have more than a passing resemblance to those made for Britain’s only other Diamond Jubilee – Queen Victoria’s, in 1897. The small British company in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, not only employs the same levels of craftsmanship that were used more than a century ago, it has also based its design on a pencil, called ‘The Pointer’, that dates back to the period. The cap of Yard-O-Led’s Diamond Jubilee Ballpoint and Pencil features the commemorative hallmark of Queen Elizabeth II’s head, created specifically to mark 60 years on the throne. Six other hallmarks are individually applied to the barrel of the reassuringly heavy pens and pencils, before each one is individually numbered by hand. Tim Tufnell, the Director of Yard-O-Led, and John Freeman – one of the craftsmen who makes the Diamond Jubilee pens and pencils – have both celebrated their 40th Anniversary at the company, while John’s brother, Dennis, has notched up an even more remarkable 45 years. The workshops are full of old but beautifully

maintained machines and tools that are every bit as durable as the craftsmen who use them. No other pens in the world are made using such traditional skills at every stage in their creation, and with so few people now having the skills the company needs, Yard-O-Led provides a way to protect as well as enjoy all that is best about British craftsmanship. • Yard-O-Led’s history stretches back to 1822 when Sampson Mordan invented the first ever propelling pencil. • Each Yard-O-Led pen and pencil has a lifetime guarantee and is individually numbered and hallmarked – making it unique. • The distinctive hand-chased Victorian finish, available on several designs, requires at least 2,000 strikes to create the exquisite pattern. • The team of highly skilled silversmiths are based in workshops within Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

All the children from the dance school are aged between 2 - 21yrs performed in the show. They have been working hard for the last few months where they performed 3 shows at The Radlett Centre which took place on Saturday March 17th at 7.30pm, Sunday March 18th at 2.00 pm & Monday March 19th at 7.00pm. All three shows were sold out and Thomas Law (pete from eastenders) and Himesh Patel (Tanwar Massood from eastenders) attended the Monday eve show. Tom welcomed everyone and then stayed to watch the show and drew a raffle at the end. He was taken back with how proffessional the performances were and how much talent there was in the show. The children sang some amazing 2 6 M AY 2 0 1 2
songs, both from the theatre and pop, and the dances had fantastic choreography. The whole audience seemed to be mesmorised continually, but the 2 -4 year olds stole the show on the Sunday and returned on Monday by popular demand with their bare necesities dance number dressed in bear costumes. Each number was colourful and dynmaic and exciting. It was suitable for all ages and great entertainment. The show opened up with the whole cast to “One night only” folllowed by a variety of dance numbers including Burlesque, Pretty girl rock, Halo, Run the world, Domino, Do Re Mi, The climb and a Whitney Houston medley, and ended with a fabulous finale to “I Believe”, from Honey. The chosen charity is “Fight for
Life” (terminally ill children) and the celebrity guests over the past 12 years who have supported and hosted the shows have included : Fearne Cotton, Natalie Cassidy, Nikki Clarke, Rachael Stevens, Duncan James, Stefan Booth, Lacey Turner,Thomas Law, Melissa Suffield, and Jimmi Harkishin.
Vanessa Class has been a dancer herself since the age of three, trained at The Arts Educational stage school, became a member of The Vienna Festival Ballet Company and then opened up her own schools in Harrow and Elstree. After she had children she opened up another school in Bushey Heath. She teaches street jazz/hip hop/tots dance/lyrical and tap to students between the ages of 2 – 21yrs.
Every child of any ability gets to perform in her annual charity shows. She has 2 girls herself, Jessica 18 and Sasha 17 who also perform in the shows. Although the dance school is for dancing, there are some extremely talented singers and a few months prior to the show there are regular singing groups to create some solo and group songs for the performances. The classes are held at St Peter’s Church Hall on Mondays and Fridays. Also available are children’s birthday parties consisting of dance, song, hair and make-up. (Little stars parties), available for all ages. Anyone interested in any dance classes or parties please contact Vanessa Class on 07889405289.

Ultra-Rare £1m Lamborghini Reventón On sale at lOndOn MOtOrexpO, 11-17th June, Canary Wharf

ell-heeled petrolheads will have a unique opportunity to take possession of one of the world’s rarest supercars on the planet this summer, when an ultra-exclusive Lamborghini Reventón supercar features in an exclusive H&H Classics sale being held at London’s Motorexpo . Expected to achieve more than £1 million, the Reventón being offered for private sale at Motorexpo was one of only 20 produced and is thought to be the only example in the UK, making this a truly unique opportunity for automotive collectors. The Reventón was revealed to the public for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007 and, despite commanding an asking price of €1 million (plus local taxes), all 20 examples were pre-sold before the car had even been unveiled. Powered by a 6.5-litre V12 engine producing 650bhp, the carbonfibre Reventón can crack the 0-62 mph sprint in just 3.4 seconds and go on to a top speed of 211mph, ensuring the car has more than enough pace to live up to its stunning F-22 Raptor jet fighter-inspired body. As part of its ‘Supercars and Superclassics’ sale, H&H will be presenting an Auburn Speedster replica as well as a number of vehicles from brands such as Ferrari, Pagani, Maserati, and Koenigsegg. “The appearance, let alone sale, of a car as rare as the Lamborghini Reventón is sure to attract a large number of supercar enthusiasts and collectors to Motorexpo this summer,” commented Graeme Carver, Motorexpo CEO. “But even those who can’t 3 0 M AY 2 0 1 2
quite justify the £1 million asking price for the Reventón can get up close to their potential next purchase – be it classic or modern. Alongside H&H’s impressive catalogue of vehicles a host of car manufacturers will display more than 250 new models. With on-the-road prices starting from less than £8,000 there will be a car for every buyer,” he concluded. Motorexpo is open daily in Canary Wharf from 10am to 6pm , Monday 11th - Saturday 16th and 11am to 5pm on Sunday 17th June. In addition to the cars being displayed by H&H, a number of leading automotive brands have already confirmed their attendance, including Bentley, BMW, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Vauxhall and Volvo. Motorexpo offers visitors unrivalled interactivity, with all vehicles being open and available for people to sit in and enjoy. Motorexpo is also offering full test-drive capabilities with Motorexpo DriveME, giving visitors the chance to get behind the wheel of the very latest models on the roads around the famous Canary Wharf business and shopping district. For more information about the show visit www.motorexpo.com. Further information about the vehicles being offered by H&H is available at the company’s website: www.classic-auctions.com.

SHOW GARDEN
Rooftop Workplace for Tomorrow designed by Patricia Fox at Aralia for Walworth Garden Farm, sponsored by RBS. Challenging our perception of workplaces and offering inspirational ideas for the future, ‘Rooftop Workplace for Tomorrow’ will position the garden as an extension to the working office, utilising unused urban rooftop space.
The Fountain, this garden will depict a Cumbrian landscape, complete with a grazing meadow, fountain, stream, a stone well and a rustic crofter’s hut.
The Herbert Smith Garden for WaterAid designed by Patricia Thirion and Janet Honour Patrica Thirion and Janet Honour, from A Touch of France Garden Design, have taken inspiration for their 2012 garden from the important work carried out by WaterAid. The garden will highlight the transformation that clean water brings and it will be designed around the WaterAid symbol of a water droplet. It will contain a water pump and a hut that houses a composting latrine.
The Plankbridge Hutmakers Ltd Garden designed by Adam Woolcott and Jonathan Smith. Adam Woolcott and Jonathan Smith, RHS Chelsea Gold winners in the Courtyard Category on three previous occasions, will return to RHS Chelsea in 2012 with a design for the Plankbridge Hutmakers Garden. The garden is inspired by the Dorset countryside immortalised by Thomas Hardy in Far From the Madding Crowd and will evoke feelings of peace and nostalgia. The centrepiece of the garden will be a beautifully handcrafted shepherd’s hut which is based on the hut that features in the opening scene of the book. Plankbridge Hutmakers, who have revived the craft of making and restoring antique shepherds’ huts, are exhibiting at RHS Chelsea for the first time.
The Veolia Water Garden designed by Vicky Harris. The Veolia Water garden, designed by Vicky Harris, will demonstrate inventive ways to conserve water and achieve a beautiful garden during times of drought. Inspired by William Wordsworth’s poem,

dry summers experienced in the southeast of England, particularly East Anglia where the nursery is situated. There will be a strong emphasis on plants with silver foliage, accompanied by flowers in strong jewel-like colours to give the whole planting contrast and zing. Harkness Roses This exhibit includes roses planted in beds, and roses as cut flowers. All roses are home-produced at the Harkness nursery in Hitchin, Herts. This display will demonstrate the effectiveness of roses planted in small groups, in scale and space that is realistic for any private garden. This shows how to make the most of roses in a modern garden, and aids the imagination in visualising how such usage can integrate into mixed gardens.

JENNINGSBURY GARDENS Three contrasting gardens, one NGS open day
ust outside Hertford town centre, on the edge of open countryside is a trio of gardens known collectively as Jenningsbury Gardens. Thirty years ago, the land served as a working dairy farm before barns and stables were converted to houses, and paddocks and fields changed to gardens. The buildings are still recognisable as to their original use but the gardens, so thoughtfully created and laid out, now look as if they have always been there. An ancient moat starts at Jenningsbury, the original 16th century farmhouse. The surrounding garden is approached through a wooden gate in a brick wall that opens beneath a wisteria covered pergola. Against the wall, a deep border bursts forward with tulips and wallflowers in spring followed by dahlias, cannas and salvias later 3 4 M AY 2 0 1 2
in the year. At the back of the house is a small patio featuring clipped box contrasting with informal plantings that spill over, softening the edges of the form. Following the side of the house, you arrive at a small formal lawn edged with shrub roses and bedding outlined with brick paths. A wide mown grass path leads to a large manmade pond stocked with inquisitive koi. When viewed from the house, a stand of willow and colourful dogwoods acts as a back drop to the lake – the shrubs are coppiced each year to provide new growth and bright winter interest after the leaves have fallen. Stretches of longer grass are home to fritillarias and cowslips with swathes of cow parsley taking over in late spring. The wildflower meadow has been recently scraped back to reduce fertility and the banks resown with
traditional seed mix for successional flowering through a long season. The second garden here at Far End Barn is a garden modified over the years to serve the ever-changing needs of a family. At the back of the house, two pergolas on the patio support a variety of flowering climbers – clematis, jasmine and trumpet vine – providing wonderful colour and scent through the seasons. To the right sits a small Japanese garden featuring a shale river through gravel and a bridge. An octagonal summer house offers the perfect place to enjoy some late spring sunshine – facing onto a circular bed whose central feature is a sundial. And here the garden changes to become fluid borders and island beds filled with a mix of herbaceous perennials, spring bulbs and specimen trees such as monkey puzzle and
silver birch. This flows gently into an expanse of well-managed lawn that has in turn been play area and football pitch for the family. Beyond this is a gate through an arch that allows access to the ancient moat, which crosses the bottom of the garden. Completing the trio is the courtyard garden at The Stables – a small space bordered by wrought iron railings, featuring clipped topiary in pots, small specimen trees and a constantly changing floral display. Full of creative and unusual ideas, this garden is carefully planned with a designer’s eye and attention to detail. Jenningsbury Gardens is open for the National Gardens Scheme on Sunday 27th May from 2–5.30pm, combined admission £5.00. For more information on this and other NGS Open Gardens, go to www.ngs.org.uk

A dramatic exhibition environment will present Louboutin’s artistic personality and creative approach. It will examine the many sources of his creativity, shoes inspired by performance, cabaret and the showgirl; fantasy and fairy tale; art and architecture; film; landscape and travel. The exhibition will also focus on the handcrafted shoe, one-off designs which incorporate his highly innovative ideas, forms and materials. There will be a special section dedicated to the shoes designed for ‘Fetish’ an exhibition at the La Gallerie Du Passage, Paris in 2007, a unique collaboration of photography between Louboutin and acclaimed artist David Lynch. At the core of the exhibition will be a unique exploration of Louboutin’s design process, taking the visitor through every stage of the design journey, revealing how a shoe is constructed, from the initial drawing and first prototype through to production in the factory. HydraFacial The Hit A-List Treatment At The Harpenden Skin Clinic The Harpenden Skin Clinic is a medically-led service dedicated to natural looking results. Based within the relaxing environment of Harpenden’s stylish “Breathing Space” Spa, the clinic offers a range of leading aesthetic and non-surgical treatments to suit the individual needs of their clients. Janne Maheson – an aesthetic nurse practitioner, with extensive experience and expertise in aesthetic medicine and skin care – heads a dedicated team of staff, who are committed to maintaining a discreet and ethical service through meticulous yet friendly client care and consultation. One of the most exciting new treatments offered by The Harpenden Skin Clinic is the revolutionary HydraFacial, which has been shown to visibly improve the appearance of skin after just one session. Also known as Hydradermabrasion, this noninvasive skin resurfacing facial has quickly become one of the hottest trends in Hollywood. Celebrity fans include Beyoncé Knowles and Matthew McConaughey, whilst beauty editors regularly name HydraFacial as the secret weapon behind beautiful A-list skin. HydraFacial uses the latest aesthetic technology to provide highly efficient skin rejuvenation, 4 4 M AY 2 0 1 2
Anti-oxidants, vitamins and many other key nutrients are soaked deep down into the skin, guaranteeing a much higher absorption than if applied separately with a cream. Unwanted debris is immediately vacuumed into a separate closed container as the machine passes over the skin, ensuring a quick and totally clean process.
but without the pain or irritation associated with previous skin resurfacing treatments. Rather than using abrasive techniques that can dry or irritate the skin, the HydraFacial exfoliates whilst simultaneously hydrating the area with an anti-oxidant serum. Intense hydration helps the existing skin cells to perform at their optimum, encourages the production of new cells and counteracts tissue damage and aging. The anti-oxidant serum also encourages the plumpingup of fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation, leading to an overall improvement in skin tone and texture. Hydration during treatment has elevated the HydraFacial to
the forefront of skin resurfacing procedures. The facial is a soothing and refreshing experience that is even suitable for sensitive skins and it provides more effective and reliable results than the previously popular microdermabrasion. During the HydraFacial, a handheld machine is gently stroked over the face in a continual motion. The painless device features a specially shaped HydraTip, which effectively dislodges dead skin and loosens particles on the upper epidermal layer. A rejuvenating serum is simultaneously directed onto the area via a unique transdermal infusion application.
HydraFacial has been clinically proven as an effective treatment for skin complaints such as hyper-pigmentation, fine lines, acne, oily skin, puffy eyes, sensitive skin, sun damage, age spots and blackheads. By blending available serums, various skin concerns can be targeted in one session and no downtime ensures a quick and easy solution for better skin.
The Hydrafacial is an ideal one-off treat to boost the skin or to create a fantastic radiance for a special event. Alternatively, a course of six weekly treatments is recommended for deeper treatment and to improve specific skin concerns. With the perception of home care in the UK hitting an all time low as cases of abuse, cruelty and even malnutrition make the headlines, in 2011 Ken decided to try to change things by setting up his own company, Home Care Preferred.

But with kindness and consideration top of their agenda, the Home Care Preferred team offer the support and care needed to allow people to live secure and fulfilled lives in the comfort of their own familiar surroundings. Bespoke services such Pairing his 25 years experience as one-to-one care mean loved ones working in the retirement sector can continue to live within their with a new conviction that most own four walls and with their family, people would prefer to be cared for pets or treasured possessions around in their own homes, Ken established them, for as long as possible. There the first branch of Home Care Preferred in Winchmore Hill. “I started in this business in 1987 and it can be really difficult,” admitted Ken. “But the reward is actually making a difference in people’s lives. While caring for my step-father, I experienced for the first time care at home from a client’s perspective and this made me truly appreciate how important staying at home is to people.” 4 6 M AY 2 0 1 2

t Leisure Plan’s showroom in Stansted Mountfitchet, you will find the greatest selection of contemporary outdoor furniture imaginable. The stunning display is a surprising contrast to the converted old chapel (1836) which houses the complete Leisure Plan organisation. Back in the early 80’s Leisure Plan’s founder and owner Chris McCormack set up his company with the express intention of bringing the very best of European outdoor furniture design to the UK. Since then Leisure Plan’s portfolio of high quality, distinctively designed collections have established the company at the very top of the market for outdoor living. Leisure Plan is the exclusive partner to the three most highly rated luxury outdoor furniture brands and market leaders in Europe and many other world markets. DEDON – the originator and undisputed world leader in hand-woven fibre. EGOparis- French design flair with the largest colour range of any outdoor furniture manufacturer. FISCHER MOBEL – German precision using the highest grade modern materials. All three brands are winners of the prestigious Red Dot Award, worldwide recognition from a panel of independent judges with a knowledge and passion for contemporary design and quality. The strongest endorsement of Leisure Plan’s skill in identifying good design with product reliability, offering complete comfort and satisfaction. From Dedon comes the latest introductions of Mu, an imaginative and versatile modular system, adaptable to a variety of configurations and layouts. This offers a hugely versatile combination through the range of

Outdoor Luxury sofas, daybeds ,benches , coffee and side tables. Less formal but equally distinctive is the new SeaX foldable director style chair from the French designer Jean-Marie Massaud. Distinguished by the attention to detail, the combination of materials, textures and colours gives this collection an air of sophistication, whilst maintaining the simplicity of function. Colour has an individual language. EGOparis has an extensive colour palette with over 20 choices of powdercoated aluminium frames, combined with 16 colours of high-tensile polyester mesh slings. Manufactured entirely in France, the designs are based around conviviality, informality and the chance to create an individual outdoor ‘look’. From the new innovative KUBE – (each single piece converts into either a sunlounger, chair or coffee table) – through the TANDEM range including a sunlounger that is now a design classic, to the highly versatile KAMA which can change function simply by moving the cushions One of the most highly respected German outdoor furniture manufacturers of the past 50years, Fischer Mobel’s reputation for minimalist design in the highest grade materials – stainless steel- aluminium- ceramic/granite/glass has given this brand an enviable reputation for long lasting, highly durable collections. LODGE is a modular lounge system designed around the simplest of concepts - a square base unit with easily interchangeable backs and armrests according to individual preference. The rounded stainless steel frames of the TAKU collection gives the stackable chairs a real practicality, and when combined with the single catch flip-top table, makes this elegant style suitable for any location where space is at a premium. This contrast of styles enables Leisure Plan to offer furniture suitable for any design scheme or location, where individuality,
style, quality and comfort are paramount. Leisure Plan’s furniture is specified for residential projects in the furnishing of terraces, deck areas, poolsides and conservatories through to high end hotels, spas, cruise liners and luxury motor yachts. To compliment the wide variety of furniture, cushions are manufactured in Leisure Plan’s own workshop. From their large collection of fabric colours, you can give your outdoor area a touch of individual flair that will be much admired and enjoyed by all. Why compromise comfort because it is outdoors? The modular low seating combinations to dining sets, loungers and unique signature pieces ,allows home comforts to be enjoyed outdoors – without moving the furniture ! Across all three of Leisure Plan’s exclusive brands can be found collections which will satisfy the desire for both traditional and highly contemporary settings. Why not take a trip to Leisure Plan’s showroom and benefit from their expertise and assistance to help you create the outdoor lifestyle for play, relaxation or entertaining which will not only extend your home, but give you much satisfaction and enjoyment.

be an extension of your home and you can put it wherever you want. In most cases our buildings would fall under permitted development. However in certain circumstances planning may be required. We always advise that you either contact your local planning officer, or why not let us do it for you. We provide a seamless hassle-free product and service from order to completion. “When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of the landscaping around it. Our sister company Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting which fits in with your existing garden. The lighting and heating are also important, especially if you want to entertain in the evening. We take care of all that too. “ In an exciting development, for Chelsea Flower Show, Crown Pavilions is launching The Crown Duchess, a new garden room designed in partnership with the Duchess of Rutland. Working closely with the Duchess on every aspect of design and finish, Crown Pavilions has created a versatile, handcrafted garden room with elegant interiors that echo Belvoir Castle, the beautiful home of the Duchess of Rutland.

a trim before you can see what needs to be done. For the first cut, set the blades on high to remove the winter and spring growth and then gradually lower the blades. Then spade edge the lawn to redefine the edges.
Firstly, survey your lawn to assess how much of it is covered in weeds and moss, I would expect that it is the majority. Do not fear... your lawn can be completely renovated and looking new within three-four weeks. Follow LandEscape’s stepby-step guidelines to health check your lawn:
Stage 2 - Feed and Weed
Stage 1 – First Cut
You may need to give the grass 5 6 M AY 2 0 1 2
Feed the lawn with a weed and feed fertiliser. Pour the contents into a bucket and skim in over the surface. It should take three or four skimming movements up and down the lawn to empty one handful of fertiliser. Repeat until lawn is completely covered. The moss will turn black in a couple of days and this is when the lawn is ready to scarify.
Stage 3 - Scarifying
You can scarify the lawn manually or hire/buy a petrol one. Scarify in both directions and remove the thatch and moss. Recut the lawn on a number 2 to remove the remaining thatch and moss and then you are ready to reseed.
Stage 4 - Reseeding
Get some lawn seed from the garden centre, a minimum of 10kg to reseed the average sized lawn. Apply evenly, taking special care not to over-seed into the beds along the edges.
Stage 5 – Top Dressing
Buy a 10-15 25kg bag of lawn dressing and spread evenly across
the lawn. Once all areas are covered, taking care to add more to barren and poor areas, rake in the soil with the back of a metal rake until the dressing has been worked into the lawn. Now feed with a suitable pre-seed fertiliser.
Stage 6 – First Cut following the works
Do not cut the lawn for a minimum of three-four weeks. The lawn will now look verdant green and long. Cut the lawn on a number 4 and then down to a number 3. To have your lawn looking lovely in time for a springtime barbecue or summer party, call LandEscape now on 07852 993467.

HOW’S YOUR STREET VIEW?
NEW TECHNOLOGY BOOST FOR LOCAL STONE STEPS COMPANY
D
espite the tough financial times the sales line for one small traditional company in London has continued to buzz, why? – Because of Google Street View. Google Street view is a remarkable application on the Internet where people can now walk down a street and take a look around from their PC or even mobile phone. Which means of course, that the appearance of our homes as viewed from the road, has never been more important.V “And that’s where we come in.” said managing director, Trevor Alexander. “Attractive steps can transform the first impressions someone has of
70 APRIL2012
your house – especially in London where steps are such a prominent feature. We create beautiful steps and paving using only top quality York stone or Portland stone, the two best looking and most famous natural materials for walking on. What is more, these traditional materials have stood the test of time because they have good grip even when wet, are extremely hard wearing, but above all, they both look fantastic! When a potential client phones us now we can now simply invite them to take a walk on Google Street View and look at the steps in their neighbourhood. As we’ve installed hundreds of
steps in South Kensington and Chelsea the chances are - the ones they like - are ours!” First impressions do count, especially when you are trying to sell your home or impress your friends. We asked one of Trevor’s clients what they thought, “I hadn’t really appreciated what a difference to the look of the whole house the steps would make. It was only when I found the Natural Stone Steps Company website on Google, and saw the ‘before and after’ photographs that I realised. Visitors now comment on the nice appearance of the house, which we never received before – even though we’ve only changed the steps! I’m
glad I Googled. Thanks Trevor!” A set of stone steps are normally installed in one or two days but will last a lifetime and if they are visible from the road then they are visible by the whole world! It may just be worth going on Google Street view to take a look (http://www.google. co.uk/help/maps/streetview/), and if improvements are needed, ring Trevor at the Natural Stone Company! For more information contact Trevor Alexander on 01483 211311, email info@naturalstonecompany. co.uk or visit website at www. naturalstonecompany.co.uk

THE OLYMPIC RANGE
A NEW BREED OF INDOOR POOL FROM ORIGIN Origin has been in the indoor and outdoor swimming pool business for over thirty years. In that time they have built literally thousands of pool installations - most of which are still in daily use today. Along the way the company has listened to, and in many cases benefited from, ideas and styles that their customers have suggested and the new Olympic range has included many of these suggestions. In fact it is not an exaggeration to say that their wide network of customers has helped to make this the benchmark Origin design collection. More pool space and greater consideration of internal layout. Extra ideas that their customers find important - such as more daylight, better changing facilities, and importantly, more room for gym equipment. Another subject they mentioned was cost! So the company has brought these state of the art packages in at some record-breaking prices. And to help out even further, the Chancellor didn't alter the VAT rate but they
7 2 M AY 2 0 1 2
did! For a limited time Origin are prepared to pay half the VAT on all the Olympic pool buildings. Typically this could mean a saving of up to £20,000. But how has Origin managed to produce what is probably their most advanced range at such competitive rates? rough the use of cutting edge technology and the finest new materials they can offer some very exciting advances to today's pool buyer. For example, fully temperature controlled pool and surroundings. An exterior finish engineered timber construction. A wide choice of exterior and interior finishes and colours, so the Olympic pool house will match in with the colour, texture and surroundings of your home. To complete this comprehensive package, Origin has commissioned ten big canvas prints in a wide range of subjects (from flowers, to palm trees to penguins!) to complete the picture. e company will offer you any two of these with their compliments. Artwork can really maximise the interior
look, and these big bold subjects will forever be talking points to all your guest swimmers. e Olympic range features four models - the Arena, the Marathon, the Challenger and the top of the range Olympiad. e Arena is a compact well appointed design, with all the features of its bigger counterparts apart from the Origin trademark roof lantern design. e pool size is a generous 5.7 x 2.75 metres, and has a powerful swim jet to really try your stamina. e other models even include gym equipment recommended by Origin - and the whole range boasts shower facilities and sliding patio doors. If you chose the mid-range Marathon the standard price for the complete package would be £189,000. Take off half the VAT as long as this offer lasts, and you would pay £173,250 - a saving of £15,750. * A great incentive for you to be first in the Olympic race.
ABOUT ORIGIN Origin is Britain’s biggest indoor pool company. From small beginnings in the 1970s the company has grown, and its product ranges become more sophisticated, ever since. e directors and their team of key people are largely the same, some of the team being able to boast over twenty five years of service. And of course the expertise has grown to new heights, resulting in the superb architect designed buildings of today. Origin are responsible for every element of the process from early scribbled designs that include many of the customers' thoughts, through the architectural design, planning, ground works and construction. All is within the remit of this privately owned British company - from the first sketch to the last lick of paint, controlled and overseen by the Origin team. And that's a promise.
Origin is proud to sponsor Olympic swimmer Fran Halsall. Her constant and remarkable progress includes world records, and qualifying for the Olympics fastest in the world in 50m and 100m freestyle events this year. Apparently she wishes she had an Origin pool house!

FAMILY
n the current economic climate over two-thirds of first-time home buyers are receiving some financial assistance from their parents. Will Mercer, a family solicitor at Taylor Walton solicitors, considers the implications from a family law perspective of parents assisting their children with the purchase of a property and the importance of documentation to provide evidence of the parents’ contribution.
contribution by the parents is intended to be a gift and not a loan or a contribution entitling the parents to a share in any increase in the value of the property then a Deed of gift can be prepared at the time of purchase. 4. Parents as co-owners A final option to consider, and perhaps the most robust of all, is that the parents themselves are recorded as co-owners of the property having identifiable shares in the property. This will avoid any future problems as the parents can make sure they are reimbursed for their original contribution if the property is subsequently sold.
THE PROBLEM The main issue with parents contributing to the purchase of their child’s new property is that often the details of the arrangement are not properly discussed between the parents and the child and consequently the arrangement is not recorded in writing. Broadly speaking there are three different types of arrangement which occur. The first, and perhaps the most common, is that the parents do not expect to get any monies back. Parents often give their child a lump sum by way of a gift or an advance on their expected inheritance to act as a deposit for a first property and do not expect the child to pay them back. The second arrangement involves the parents lending money for a deposit to their child on the basis that it will be repaid at some point. Often either no time frame is given for when the loan must be repaid or the loan will be repaid once the house is sold. Rarely will the arrangement be recorded in writing. The third arrangement is more complex. Parents consider the money to be an investment providing them with an identifiable share in the property and entitling them to receive any proceeds in line with their percentage share in the property if and when the property is sold.
CONCLUSION Parents should consider taking the following actions when helping children buy property:
DEAR MUM AND DAD... CAN I HAVE A LOAN PLEASE? Peter decides that the time has come for him to move out of his parents’ house and his parents assist him by contributing £10,000 (as an interest free loan) to the deposit on a 2 bedroom apartment. The deposit required is £15,000 and the remaining £5,000 comes from Peter’s savings. The property is purchased in Peter’s sole name and no formal document is drawn up to document the contribution from Peter’s parents.
Two years later and Peter married his girlfriend Claire. They stay married for 10 years but then Claire decides that she cannot live with Peter anymore and applies for a divorce. She makes an offer as part Problems often arise later on when of the parallel financial proceedings the child forms a relationship. that she will accept a payment Whether the child subsequently equivalent to 50% of the value of the cohabits with their partner or marries, property. There is no evidence of the the lack of certainty in relation to contribution made by Peter’s parents the parents’ contribution can lead to which would assist him in arguing unforeseen outcomes if the child and that Claire should not be entitled to their partner later split up. 50% of the value of the property. Consider this very typical scenario; 7 6 M AY 2 0 1 2
The risk for Peter’s parents is that,
although they intended their contribution to be an interest free loan to be repaid on the sale of the property, they may not be repaid. THE SOLUTIONS 1. Declaration of trust The first solution is for the child and the parents to enter into a declaration of trust at the time the property is purchased. This will provide clear evidence of the intentions of the child and the parents in relation to the arrangements for how any increase in value is to be treated and who provided what to the original purchase price/deposit. 2. Loan agreement If the agreement is that of a loan, a loan agreement can be drawn up as evidence of the parents’ contribution and that this was the intention of the child and the parents at the time the property was purchased. 3. Deed of gift If the arrangement is that the
First, parents must ensure they properly discuss with their child the details of the arrangement – is the arrangement an interest free loan, a gift or an investment? Second, parents must ensure that the arrangement is correctly recorded whether it be in a loan agreement, a declaration of trust, a deed of gift or by having the parents recorded as co-owners of the property. Recording the arrangements clearly and correctly will avoid difficult problems arising in the future. Please note that this article has not discussed important tax issues arising from parents helping their children purchase property. Parents should always consider the tax implications of the various methods detailed above and should seek legal advice when considering how to proceed. Taylor Walton’s Private Client Department is very experienced in assisting clients with these issues. ‘Blenheim Steps’ dates back to the late 18th Century. It is a beautifully appointed and presented Grade II listed family house that has been extensively renovated and adapted in recent years to provide substantial and well appointed living accommodation. Originally entitled ‘Blenheim House’ the current property was believed to have replaced a property that was built shortly after the Duke of Marlborough’s victory at Blenheim in 1704. In 1925 it became part of Mill Hill School and was sub-divided, with the ground floor being used as the ‘tuck shop’ with the prominent bow windows being added in 1926 and 1971. The property was subsequently sold as a private residence. It benefits from a most convenient location at one of the highest spots in Mill Hill, close to amenities yet in a lovely rural setting, with a stunning garden and swimming pool.
