The historic beauty of George Street in St Albans makes it one my favourite streets! It has been in existence since well before the available records. Records go back to around 1250, and state that at that time it was little more than a lane leading to the churches of St. Andrew and Abbey Church. Situated by the Clock Tower and within the beautiful old Corn Exchange in St Albans, Kingshill Jewellers offer collections of the most innovative and beautiful jewellery available. Inspired by its enchanted surroundings, the gallery is dedicated to fashion jewellery brands as well as hosting a private diamond and wedding ring room. The Verulamium Spa is a purpose built, beautifully appointed, modern spa in the heart of St Albans. Named after the ancient Roman name for the city of St Albans, the Verulamium Spa includes wet and dry rooms, a relaxation pool, Tepidarium (warm room) and Laconium (hot room) and ample space to relax in calm, tranquil surroundings. This gives you just a small taste of exciting events and articles featured in this month’s issue...

local life

food GLORIOUS food THE GROVE, HERTFORDSHIRE

T

he spirit of hospitality and entertainment is alive and well at The Grove in Hertfordshire, the luxury resort known as ‘London’s Country Estate’. Originally the country seat of the Earls of Clarendon, the 18th century Grade II Listed mansion now sits happily alongside the new West Wing. Inside, the design deftly acknowledges the house’s history, whilst giving guests an environment that is fun and relaxed - a compelling mix of fresh air and urban style, the buzz of the town and the peace of a garden, rural walks and world-class cuisine. Ever since it opened, local foodies and gourmets from further afield have made their way to The Grove to sample its many delectable delights. So as to give its guests plenty of choice, in style, ambience, flavour and price, The Grove has three distinctive restaurants – Colette’s, The Glasshouse and The Stables – all bound by a common passion for quality, seasonality and simplicity. Leading the way is Colette’s, the elegant à la carte restaurant in the heart of the 18th century mansion. Here there is a definite sense of occasion – with historic plasterwork mouldings, beautifully restored, antique silver and candlesticks, clean white china, dramatic modern art and contemporary cream leather chairs – but absolutely no stuffiness. There is a large terrace for al fresco drinks and eating in the summer – with views sweeping over the estate to the lake and the Grand Union Canal. At the helm is rising star Head Chef Russell Bateman. A protégé of Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, Russell has already won 3 AA Rosettes in the 2011 AA Restaurant Guide and an entry in the 2012 Good Food Guide for Colette’s. Bringing his own creativity and flair to the food on the menu at Colette’s, Russell’s skill is to combine classic flavours with the more adventurous. His unique style of embracing diverse food and cultures while subtly mixing flavours and textures is highlighted through the use of the freshest and best ingredients – with many picked daily from The Grove’s kitchen garden in the old Walled Garden. Russell has created a series of culinary master classes, the latest ones taking place on 7 September, 9 November, 18 January and 8 March 2013. The master classes have been designed to be accessible, to improve kitchen knowledge and build confidence in creating more adventurous flavour combinations. Students will glean valuable advice from Russell, as he prepares cooks and serves a series of dishes which are easily recreated at home. Each master class will focus on a specific seasonal ingredient and will be followed by lunch and a wine tasting at Colette’s. This September, Russell also introduces three new Tasting Menus at Colette’s – Sonnet, Nature and Symphony. Priced from £75 for six courses or £125 with wine pairings, Sonnet salutes the best of British, from hand-dived Scottish scallops with peanut, radish and lime, to Cornish lamb with pea, tomato, sherry and Berkswell cheese. lo ca l life Symphony, priced at £85 for eight courses, £135 with wine pairings, heralds the end of the summer season with carpaccio of Landes foie gras with cherries, pistachio and sour dough, wild line caught sea bass with cauliflower, cucumber, watercress, oyster and caviar and Mara de Bois strawberries, with vanilla shortbread and strawberry juices. Nature, the inspired vegetarian selection, includes slow-cooked organic egg with baked potato and truffle butter, rainbow chard with beetroot and pistachio, and Maris Piper terrine with artichoke, girolles and Berkswell cheese. Colette’s is open for dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday. The new à la carte menu, Haiku, is priced at £65 for three courses. For a lively and buzzing atmosphere, book a table at The Glasshouse, described as an “international theatre of cooking”, with its open kitchens and delicious fresh buffet offering an enticing array of British, Mediterranean and Asian dishes. Diners can watch The Grove’s chefs in action as dish after dish is freshly prepared to perfection and personal taste. When the weather is good, the large outdoor terrace overlooking the formal gardens is an ideal spot to enjoy a digestif with friends or to loose oneself in a good book with a slice of freshly baked cake and cup of coffee. The Grove has always been family-friendly and The Glasshouse especially has something delicious for everyone, from concerned parents to toddlers craving pasta and puddings. Giving families that extra incentive to indulge, children aged 12 years and under can dine with 50% off, and children under two years of age can dine for free. This September, four can enjoy lunch for the price of three at The Glasshouse, available Monday to Friday and priced at £33 per person. Open daily for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, meals at The Glasshouse range from £25 to £49 per person. The Glasshouse Bar is open daily from 11am to midnight. In the original 18th century stable block, The Stables restaurant has a wholesome and rustic feel to it – perfect for the whole family. Children are even served on special spotty Emma Bridgewater china, alongside small-sized cutlery. Head Chef Christopher Mouyassi uses the very best in seasonal ingredients to create informal yet gorgeous comfort food, which has been recently awarded an AA Rosette for innovation. His homely menus are bursting with classic British flavours including succulent steaks, wood-fired pizzas and warming autumnal pies. Designed with a New England look and feel, the restaurant opens onto a courtyard with views across to the golf course and the rolling hills beyond, providing an entirely different ambience from Colette’s and The Glasshouse. The Stables is set to be the number one choice for families to dine this September, as the restaurant offers complimentary lunch and dinner for children aged 12 and under, when dining with an adult, available Monday to Friday until 28 September. The Stables is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Stables Bar, next to the restaurant, is the perfect place to quench the thirst after a long day on the green, with golfers welcome from 7.00am. For guests who prefer the informality of light lunches and tea, the four elegant Lounges and The Library in the mansion provide peaceful hideaways, overlooking the enchanting Formal Gardens through French windows. With open fires in the winter, these historic rooms are just the place to while away time over a game of scrabble or the day’s newspaper; breakfast, light meals and snacks are served daily, while Afternoon Tea daily from 3.00pm-5.00pm. This September, be sure to book in for Afternoon Tea at The Grove, served in the Lounges, as throughout the month it comes with a complimentary glass of Prosecco per person. The perfect accompaniment to delicate finger sandwiches, fresh warm scones and exquisite chocolate creations. From family barbecues on the urban beach, picnics in the parkland, to luxurious private dining in the Mansion, The Grove can cater to every guest’s idea of the perfect meal. Lord Clarendon would certainly approve. All of The Grove’s restaurants, including Afternoon Tea, can now be booked online. GORGEOUS GEORGE STREET Hertfordshire history with Sean Boru

T

he historic beauty of George Street in St Albans makes it one my favourite streets! It has been in existence since well before the available records. Records go back to around 1250, and state that at that time it was little more than a lane leading to the churches of St. Andrew and Abbey Church. It belonged to a convent known as the sisters of St. Mary of Sopwell; they were protected by the Abbott. It was known as Church Street up until sometime in the early 15th century, that’s when a license was granted to build a tavern which was named `George upon the Hupe`. The name comes

from the canonisation of a 3rd century Christian Roman soldier of the same name; St. George became the patron saint of England in 1348 under King Edward III. George Street is therefore named after the George Inn coaching house, and not the other way round. The street has a long and illustrious connection to the crown, and today the Crown Estate still hold the freehold of many properties on the street. The George Inn is the oldest on the street and was in the possession of the High Lord Admiral John Duke in 1446, as the records state. In 1480 it changed hands and the landlord was Thomas Hethness, he wanted to N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2 3 1

attract a higher class of traveller, so he applied to the Abbott and was granted a license to convert part of the Inn into a private Chapel. In 1666 just after the Great Fire of London, Henry Gladman was the licensee, due to a shortage of coins in the realm caused by the fire; he issued a token bearing the symbol of St George and the Dragon. Other local traders followed suit and the various tokens could be redeemed in any shop or Inn, the value of each one ranged from a halfpenny to tuppence. Other Inns followed as time went by and St. Albans became an important coach stop, The George was in time accompanied

by The Valiant Trooper, The White Horse, The Peacock, The Tabard Inn, The White Bear Inn and The Corner Hall. All these are sadly gone now, only part of the old Swan Tavern remains in the form of the present Tudor Tavern. The Swan was built around 1440 and formed part of the Nunnery of Sopwell, no doubt to subsidise the income of the nuns and the Abbott. Over the next 200 years the buildings along George Street changed in appearance, both inside and out. The nuns acquired a few luxuries from the continued income of the tavern, fire heaths were built to provide warmth for them in their cells. The windows were added to the frontage as lead lighting. The Swan changed its name in

the 1660s to The Kings Head; again the royal connection came into it. In 1649 King Charles I was executed for treason by Parliament under Oliver Cromwell, he proceeded to lead England as a commonwealth until his death in 1658. Richard Cromwell took over as High Lord Protector and he became even more unpopular. Soon the people demanded the return of the Monarchy, and so in 1660 Charles II was restored to the throne. In celebration the Swan became The Kings Head. The Swan became two properties around 1655, these were known as `Messuages` which consisted of a tenanted property which included out buildings with a yard or court. By 1785 The Kings Head was gone and had been converted into small shop units, with living accommodation above. The George which formed part of the old Sawn building was still a thriving coaching Inn. The old Swan buildings formed the senior part of George Street’s shops; it has housed an array of businesses from that time until 1963. These included an oil merchant, a candle maker and a chandler.

In early 1900 an antique dealer took it over and it became known as Mayles Corner, after the owner and his wife. The council in its infinite wisdom finally saw the light in 1963; they bought the building and restored it to its former glory as a Tudor style historic listed building. The Tudor Tavern was born out of it. Today The George Inn and The Tudor Tavern, along with the other modern day businesses in George Street reflect an age long gone, but not forgotten. So next time you’re in the city, or just wandering around the streets, take a stroll down George Street and see the preserved glory that makes St. Albans such a beautiful place. I get an indescribable special feeling when I’m there so why don’t you pop down to George Street this month and experience Christmas shopping in style and beauty. F E AT U R E Set in over 150,000 square feet, the tour will include some of the most recognisable and memorable film sets and props of all time allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves within the world of filmmaking and Harry Potter. Within the iconic Great Hall visitors will walk on the actual solid York stone floor laid over 11 years ago. They will also marvel at the solid oak and pine house tables which were built for the films and then aged with axes and chains. Over the years, the Hogwarts pupils have taken upon themselves to carve in their own graffiti, which production designer Stuart Craig has encouraged, as this would happen in all schools! Visitors can also enjoy the unique house points bead system which is said to have caused a national shortage of beads when it was first installed in the year 2000. Beyond the Great Hall, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter continues with a huge selection of the most detailed and largest sets ever produced in the UK. Visitors can gaze closely into Dumbledore’s office and spot the authentic Sword of Gryffindor, Sorting Hat and Hogwarts headmaster portraits which adorn the walls, including one of the sleeping Professor Dumbledore himself. Visitors will also discover the magic of green screen technology that has been used for the films including the many Quidditch matches. Also on display will be Harry Potter’s Nimbus 2000, Draco Malfoy’s Nimbus 2001 and Harry’s special gift from godfather Sirius Black, the Firebolt. In addition to the green screen, a number of never-before-seen video pieces featuring interviews with the crew and cast will reveal the many secrets behind the filmmaking process. Visitors will also be able to appreciate the spectacular animatronics and make-up designs within the Creature Effects workshop. The workshop will feature iconic Harry Potter film creatures including Buckbeak the Hippogriff, Aragog,

the giant spider, Fawkes the phoenix and the enormous Basilisk head. The Weasley kitchen will showcase the incredible craftsmanship of the real life special effect props including Molly Weasley’s self-cooking frying pan, knitting needles and chopping boards. And fans can celebrate Hogwarts’ loveable groundskeeper Hagrid by visiting the real Hagrid’s hut, view his famous motorcycle, and take a peek at the secrets of how the larger than life character was created on screen. The Ministry of Magic will also feature in the Studio Tour, highlighted by the breathtaking Magic is Might statue as seen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, designed by Stuart Craig to be reminiscent in style of soviet sculptures from the 1930’s highlighting the dominance of the wizarding world over Muggles. In addition, visitors will be able to enjoy one of the most famous addresses in the world, 4 Privet Drive, as well as the legendary cupboard under the stairs. The Gryffindor common room is one of the films’ oldest sets and remains one of the most loved by fans. This iconic set will feature alongside the Gryffindor boys’ dormitory which includes the original beds made for Harry, Ron, Seamus, Neville and Dean for the first film. Over the course of filming, as the cast grew from young boys to teenagers, filmmakers were required to find unique camera angles to hide the fact that the cast had clearly outgrown the beds. Other Hogwarts sets on show include the dark and mysterious Potion’s classroom, the lair of Professor Snape, and Professor Umbridge’s office resplendent in pink with the incredibly detailed hand painted cat porcelain plates each made especially for the films. The gateway to the school itself, the Hogwarts bridge, last seen burning to the ground following Neville and the Death Eater’s chase in the final film, will be restored for all to see as will hundreds of props, costumes, animatronics and many other exciting sets which will be unveiled as the opening approaches. BOND IS BACK...

SKYFALL

Time waits for no man, not even the suave and sharply attired 007.

I

n the 50 years since Ian Fleming’s debonair secret agent introduced himself to Sylvia Trench at a card table in Dr No, global politics have changed beyond recognition. The Iron Curtain has fallen, the Cold War has thawed, the People’s Republic Of China has emerged as a superpower and terrorism has shifted into the digital realm, forcing James Bond and his colleagues at MI6 to evolve. Actors, who have been licenced to kill during these five turbulent decades, have brought something new to the party.

George Lazenby George Lazenby invested his short-lived 007 with tender romance while Roger Moore arched an eyebrow with impish glee, doling out innuendo-laden one-liners with aplomb.

Sean Connery Sean Connery married flirtatiousness with rugged machismo and bare-chested sex appeal, providing a template that successors have struggled to match.

Daniel Craig The latest Bond, Daniel Craig, has rugged physicality in abundance but his one-note interpretation of the spy who is shaken but never stirred remains devoid of personality.

Timothy Dalton Timothy Dalton added darkness and grit to his emotionally tortured agent, then Pierce Brosnan restored parity between athleticism and charm, coming closest to the glory days of the 1960s.

FILM

It’s telling that the abiding memory of Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace is a pair of tight, blue swimming shorts. Skyfall will do nothing to dispel those concerns but is undoubtedly the best instalment of Craig’s tenure to date. Director Sam Mendes sensibly surrounds his leading man with an ensemble of award-winning actors, who bring gravitas and humour to their iconic roles. This tour-de-force supporting cast encourages Craig to raise his game but also exposes his weaknesses as an actor, most noticeably in a pivotal scene of heartbreak, which relies on a drenching from a previous fist fight to send droplets of water down his inexpressive face, suggesting the tears of a momentarily broken man. In the brilliantly orchestrated action sequences, Craig is in his element and Mendes opens with a breathtaking 12-minute pre-credits sequence, which draws heavily from the Bourne franchise to propel Bond and field agent Eve (Naomie Harris) through the winding streets of Istanbul. The mission ends in apparent tragedy, heralding the sombre chords 4 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

of Adele’s soaring theme song that harks back to the belting ballads of Shirley Bassey. With Bond reportedly killed in action, section chief M (Dame Judi Dench) pens an obituary as a political storm rages around her. A database of MI6 assets has fallen into the wrong hands, compromising undercover agents around the world. This dereliction of duty puts M and the department’s Chief Of Staff, Bill Tanner (Rory Kinnear), in the firing line and they are summoned to Westminster before a committee including the new Chairman of the Intelligence And Security Committee, Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), and ambitious rival Clair Dowar (Helen McCrory). While M fends off sustained attacks on her reputation, news filters through that Bond has survived and M engages her physically bruised agent to track down menacing cyber terrorist Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem). Working alongside Q (Ben Whishaw) and Eve, Bond traverses the globe in search of Silva, crossing paths with the mysterious Severine (Berenice Marlohe) in a casino in Macau, which facilitates a steamy shower sex scene. As the investigation continues, Bond unearths dark secrets from M’s past that threaten to bring down the whole of MI6.

FILM

Skyfall looks stunning courtesy of cinematographer Roger Deakins and action sequences don’t disappoint. Bravely, the 23rd Bond assignment pares back the slam bang thrills to concentrate on characterisation and plot, putting Dench’s authority figure at the centre of the betrayal. The film dazzles during verbal jousts, whether it’s M discovering Bond in the shadows of her London apartment (“You’re bloody well not sleeping here!”) or Silva fondling Bond’s inner thighs and asking what regulation training suggests he do. “What makes you think it’s my first time?” cheekily replies 007. Bardem is deliciously camp and menacing, recalling classic villains of yore as he berates M for her deceptions in one breath (“Mummy was very bad!”) then guns down innocent bystanders without mercy. Dench is wonderful as ever and really excels when she abandons her desk for the field of action. Supporting actress Oscar nominations have been bestowed for far less. Whishaw asserts himself as a gadget geek with a terrific introductory scene

in an art gallery, warning Bond that “age is no guarantee of experience.” A throwaway visual gag with his coffee mug is a hoot. Fiennes and Harris acquit themselves well but sultry Bond girl Marlohe is forgettable.

Skyfall (12A, 143 mins) Action/Thriller. Cast Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes, Berenice Marlohe, Rory Kinnear, Albert Finney, Helen McCrory Director Sam Mendes Released Out nationwide now

The closing 20 minutes are the only obvious misstep by screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan, who telegraph their intentions early on when Severine asks Bond if he will kill Silva and 007 responds “someone usually dies”. To tie up the loose ends, the writers hurriedly introduce an additional character, Bond’s old gamekeeper Kincade (Albert Finney), who exists purely to manoeuvre characters into the correct positions. Director Mendes gets high on nostalgia to the obvious delight of Bond purists. However, he spends slightly too long looking back and not enough looking forward, and consequently stumbles with the lacklustre final showdown more befitting of an episode of The A-Team than the second biggest film franchise in history. ASTON MARTIN DB9 This is where it all began. It still seems like yesterday, but back in 2003 the epic Vanquish V12 disappeared from the price lists, and in doing so it signalled the end of a chapter for Aston Martin. BY MATT JOY

W

e were all sad to see such a genuine British supercar shuffle off - at least until we saw what replaced it. The DB9 can take a huge slice of credit for the leaps and bounds that the manufacturer has made in the last 10 years, putting it back up where it belonged. It is fitting then that the DB9 gets just rewards in the form of a gentle makeover. There have been updates along the way of course, such as the option of the Touchtronic transmission and the divine Bang & Olufsen audio system, but this is the most serious upgrade the car has received in its six-year life. A single glance will register a subtle change, but not necessarily what it is. Allow me to put you out of your misery: at the front there’s a new bumper with a slicker air intake and new headlight surrounds. There’s also handsome new 20-inch alloys, sliver brake callipers and clear rear light lenses. But the fact that so little has changed proves the inherent rightness of the original design. Despite no longer being the new kid in town, the DB9 is still a magnificently beautiful

4 2 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

car: it has grace and enormous presence, and seeing one on the road is never anything less than a treat. To add to the looks there are a wider choice of colours too. Inside it is business class as usual. High quality materials are used throughout while the layout is familiar too. It may take a little while to fathom the minutiae of the DB9’s systems, but then this is a proper GT car that has many strings to its bow. Cabin comfort comes as standard too, with sports seat that offer support in the corners without inducing aches over long periods. All these are static improvements however, and what matters more is the major mechanical change. All DB9s including the drop-top Volante now adopt the Adaptive Damping System already fitted to the DBS, offering both Normal and Sport modes depending on the driver’s mood and the conditions, helping to maximise the performance of the chassis as well as tailoring the car’s performance as required.

M OTO R I NG

Out on the road the difference between the two settings is marked. In Normal mode the DB9 does what it is already very good at: soothing the worst of the road imperfections away without ever allowing body roll or cornering performance to become an issue. In fact you could drive the DB9 in this mode forever and never think it was lacking. But then you punch the Sport button, and there is a clear stiffening of the sinews and a less filtered transmission of the road surface to the driver. Bumpy roads won’t go unnoticed for sure, but neither will the genuine excellence of the DB9’s chassis. In Sport mode you can exploit every last shred of grip, feel the strength in the chassis and the impressive communication that comes as a result. This is a Grand Tourer that thinks nothing of devouring a B-road for fun, and never feels short of ability or dynamism. It also remains an epically fast car. In the ever-escalating world of power outputs - not least its siblings in the shape of the more punchy and lighter V12 Vantage and the biblically-powerful One77 hypercar - it’s easy to think that the 470bhp V12 in the DB9 is somehow average. But one extended tread of accelerator pedal into the carpet will put paid to that. Choose third gear for the best effect, and from 2,000rpm there is a deep, hearty

growl as the 6.0-litre unit goes to work. By 4,000rpm it’s really shifting and once past the 6k mark and honing in on the red line the scenery will be a blur, grins will be worn from ear-to-ear and the noise coming from the quad exhausts is worthy of a Spitfire fly-by. In this rarefied field a sense of occasion is everything: every journey needs to be one to savour, and even the dullest trips should be brightened by the car’s sheer personality. The DB9 manages this without breaking sweat and yet it demands little from the driver, allowing it to perform the role of a true GT car. The best news about this series of revisions is that it means the Aston Martin DB9 will be around for a good few years to come.

ast your mind back to 2002 and the introduction of what has become a long-lived, high-tech luxury SUV to rival not just other 4x4s but also offerings from the luxury saloon market: the third-generation Range Rover. A decade later and there's a new one promising to raise the premium 4x4 to new heights. Admit it, we all know that the arrival of a new Range Rover is guaranteed to put rivals in the shade. e question is, by how much.

From a visual inspection alone the answer is 'considerable'. e car's sleek profile is striking. Unlike engineering, assessing design is a subjective activity, so here's a solid number to consider: 450. at's 450 kilograms, as in the amount of weight saved thanks to the use of lightweight materials and clever thinking from the engineers. Don't forget, such a saving has a positive affect on fuel economy, emissions and handling. At almost five metres in length it's a good thing the car's been to

Weight Watchers. It remains an imposing machine but now it's a fraction lower than its predecessor. is is small change compared to the car's generous wheelbase - 42mm greater than before - which has increased rear legroom. Anyone who thinks a Range Rover can't compete with a Mercedes S-Class really needs to take a back seat. Along with the car's plush yet modern new interior, complete with tastefully appointed materials and minimalist switchgear, the visual overhaul is complete. What you can't see is the work that's gone on under the car's lighter skin to achieve new levels of on-road refinement and stability plus considerable improvements to the off-road experience. Central to the car's performance is a height adjustable suspension system boasting enhanced amounts of wheel travel. Opt for the 'Dynamic Response' feature and the car will attempt to further minimise pitch and roll - the sworn enemies of high-sided 4x4s. It gets more interesting when venturing off-road, as the car's refreshed Terrain Response system can now detect the terrain you're driving on and adjust the throttle, suspension, transmission accordingly. With a Range Rover it's a given that its powertrain will boast the best technology, and this model is no different. e standard 50-50 torque split is accompanied by a low range transfer gearbox that can be switched even when on the move, while a locking centre 4 8 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

differential is there to save you when the going is particularly tricky. Rejigging the car's ventilation system has led to a considerable increase in its wading depth to a massive 900mm. Power comes from a trio of engines all connected to an eight-speed auto gearbox. First up is the 510 horsepower supercharged petrol V8 motor. With this realistically destined for oil rich nations, the six and eight-cylinder diesels make more sense. Boasting 258 and 339 horsepower respectively, these engines offer smooth yet willing performance - especially the latter. at a six-cylinder motor is even offered in such a car is proof that the weight loss programme has been successful. Of course, the V8 diesel delivers a feeling of invincibility that you can't get anywhere else. And it sure helps when you're towing. Whisper it, though, because the V6 diesel variant is no slouch. It can cruise and haul the car uphill with surprising vigour, and all with the minimum of noise. For many this might be the sleeper hit of the range. When considering the overall ownership experience the usual long and tempting list of creature comforts are present, from a business class-like two-seat rear layout to powerful audio and multimedia options plus the usual heated, cooled and massaging seats. Factor in the welcome inclusion of intelligent safety systems radar cruise control, blind spot warnings and cameras to help you park - and it's clear that you'll want for little.

M OTO R I NG

Bigger and better yet lighter on its feet, this fourth generation Range Rover demonstrates that you can have it all: luxury SUV attributes plus saloon-like agility and sensible running costs. e car's sleek profile positions it aesthetically above the chunky, flabby and bloated opposition. It's also a car capable of cosseting occupants and taking the most challenging terrain in its stride. at said, it's equally home on Tarmac, making it a peerless all rounder that rivals will struggle to emulate. FACTS AT A GLANCE Model: Range Rover Autobiography SDV8, from £94,695. Range from £71,295 to £98,395. Engine: 4.4-litre diesel unit developing 339bhp Transmission: 8-speed automatic transmission as standard, driving all four wheels. Performance: Maximum speed 135mph, 0-62mph 6.9 seconds. Economy: 32.5mpg. CO2 Rating: 229g/km.

Join The Country Style Alliance SEEK OUT SOME COUNTRY LIVING WITH THIS SEASON'S COSIEST TREND. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO WORK THE HERITAGE LOOK.

If summer was all about patriotic red, white and blue, then this winter is a celebration of British heritage style. Racing greens, muddy browns and burnt oranges are key tones for this look. e colour palette may be more subdued but it's a winning look for autumn 2012. Tartan, tweed, cosy knits, faux fur and riding boots also feature, making the countryside trend the perfect fashion formula for cosying up on Bonfire Night and seeing you through the colder months. Shake off the city slicker vibe and escape to the country in style.

TARTAN TRADITIONALIST Take inspiration from Downton Abbey by opting for country classics. Look to Kate Middleton's off-duty outfits for ideas - she is right at home in riding boots, traditional knits and outdoorsy waistcoats. is trend is smart and practical, so think flats for country walks and leave stick-in-the-mud heels at home. Checks and plaids are also staples of this style. Hunt out earthy colours and accessorise with a sweeping coat to take to the moors in dramatic Wuthering Heights fashion. If you don't want to look like you're walking your dog, smarten up with some tailoring. A check pencil skirt will give you an instant air of manor house chic.

ENGLISH ECCENTRIC You may have no intention of actually venturing out into the sticks, but that doesn't matter - you can still adopt the country style in a playful way. ink Vivienne Westwood prints. Look to modern tweeds with a flash of bright colour, like teal or orange, that bring the look bang up to date. To really make a statement, try super-sizing your checks. Mixing fabrics and textures is another way to do country cool. Seek checked coats with leather sleeves or tweed jackets featuring velvet trim lapels. Don't be afraid to introduce clashing prints alongside checks, too. is season's dark winter florals will work particularly well for a double trend hit. For a stylish pairing of opposites, mix up countryside woolly knits with sparkly sequins for a look that works for day or night. HERITAGE HESITANT If a tartan overdose is too twee for you, merge town and country style for a much more subtle ensemble. Instead of the statement top-to-toe looks that trotted down the catwalks, adopt one accent piece, like a blanket winter coat or wax jacket. Country outerwear instantly pares down uber-girly dresses, a la Alexa Chung. Give a nod to heritage with the ultimate countryside staple - a hat. A farmer's flat cap might be too much so try a stylish felt fedora with feather trim detail. Accessories like scarves, bags and boots can transform a look for a country edge. Try stomping out in riding boots if you like knee-highs, or Chelsea boots if you find ankle length more flattering.

extra on a costume drama. Either work an outfit, or accessories. Both can be overkill. For authenticity, flat and chunky boots work best with this look so skip the stilettos. Beware of big checks. Stick to fine checks and tweeds if you're conscious of over-emphasising your curves. Heritage is more of a low-key daytime trend so steer clear if you're looking for full-on glamour. If your country get-up feels too dark, add one or two bright contrasting bright colours to make your outfit 'pop'.

A PLUM JOB PURPLE IS THE SURPRISE COLOUR OF CHOICE IN BEAUTY FOR WINTER. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO EXPERIMENT WITH INDIGO.

Bored of traditional smoky eyes or classic red talons? Try this season's purple beauty obsession for an instant colour update. It's regal, opulent and oh-so on-trend right now, whether you want a plush deep purple or eye-popping bright indigo. "Purple is the right choice for both this winter and next spring," says Georgina Graham, make-up artist at Management Artists. "We have seen a 'dark romantic' trend on the runways, editorials and red carpets. A good idea is to invest in a purple eye shadow or pencil, as purple is a colour that suits all skin tones and eye colours and actually enhances the eye colour." But purple peepers aren't your only option. e shade is as alluring on lips in amethyst or painted on nails in shimmering violet. Time to parade your purple. l Shrinking Violet Give your pout the sheerest hint of purple with Clinique's Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Voluptuous Violet and leave the pencil in your handbag over winter to relieve dry, cracked lips, £16 (www.clinique.co.uk). l Purple paws Jazz up party fingers with an uplifting shot of indigo from Rococo's appealing range of purples. Choose from No Shrinking Violet, Purple Reign, Purple Haze or Dreamy In Versailles, £12 each (Space NK). l Pick 'n' Mix Can't decide on the intensity of your purple smoky eyes? Experiment with four blendable shades using Marks & Spencer's Autograph Baked Quad Eyeshadow in Purple Mix, £12. l Positive purple Lush's new Emotional Brilliance range associates colours with positive feelings. e Drive Liquid Lips pot is all about moving forward so wear the bold pinky purple hue as a reminder to make things happen, £14.50 (01202 668 545/www.lush.co.uk).

l Variable violet To pack a purple punch, try Clarins' Ombre Minerale Eye Shadow in Vibrant Violet. e powder can be used wet or dry to create a matte or shimmer finish that lasts, £16 (www.clarins.co.uk). l Amethyst amour ose torn between lipstick or gloss should pucker up with Dolce&Gabanna's Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipstick in Royal. e rich creamy lip colour is elevated by a playful burst of purple gloss, £25 (www.harrods.com). l Plush pinkies Give a nod to evening glamour with metallic or glitter shimmer finish nails. Leighton Denny's High Performance Colour in Rebel is a rich velvety purple with a deep, intense shimmer, £11 (www.feelunique.com).

l Creative crayola Stila's Smudge Crayon in Pink Violet is the multi-tasking marvel for you if you're intent on accentuating your eyes. Tripling up as an eye shadow, primer and liner in one, it delivers smouldering purple eyes in one product, £14 (0845 0035 330/www.stila.co.uk). PULLING OFF PURPLE Don't be put off by colour. Our beauty experts offer their advice, whether you want to go for subtle or statement: l Purples, plums and berry tone lips are the best to offset teeth and make them appear whiter - Gucci Westman, Revlon global artistic director. l e easiest way to wear purple is on nails, but keep them short and oval for a more modern look - Newby Hands, FeelUnique.com editorial director. l When it comes to purple polish, lighter skin tones will find that the darker the purple the more complementary, whilst olive to dark skin tones should seek out plums that have a slight reddish undertone - Jenni Draper, Mavala nail ambassador. l For a seriously sexy va va voom eye, use a brush for shadow or apply pencil close to the lash line on both top and bottom and blend gently outwards for a soft, blown-out effect - Georgina Graham, make-up artist at Management Artists. TRIED & TESTED Prep your paws for the winter season ahead. Our testers try out three moisturising hand creams: Mandara Spa Amber Heaven Nourishing Hand Cream, £5 (Sainsbury's) I loved the warm, musky fragrance from the sandalwood and patchouli. With cocoa butter, acacia honey and vitamin E, this hand cream softens and soothes but there was a slightly sticky residue. 3/5

l Jewel bright If matte and flat's not your bag, Shiseido's Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Purple Dawn makes your eyes look as though they're adorned with a sprinkling of gems. Glide over eyes for a bejewelled, evening look in an instant, £20.50 (020 7313 4774 www.shiseido.co.uk)

Aveda Hand Relief, £18 (www.aveda.co.uk) A subtle, fresh, spa-like smell that proved addictive. e luxurious cream blends into the skin quickly, and the cool, moisturising effect really soothed my chapped hands. 4/5 BUY IT NOW Go wild for Dolce&Gabbana's new Animalier Collection for the party season. e limited edition make-up range is inspired by the design house's signature leopard print. Priced from £18 (www.harrods.com). BEAUTY BULLETIN Safe style Has a decade passed since you last experimented with a new lipstick or eyeshadow shade? e average woman keeps the same make-up style for 12 years, according to new research by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk. Loyal female customers also stick to the same product that ticks all the boxes for 3.8 years. e reason for switching from a favoured item or brand was the item being discontinued for 52%, closely followed by an increase in price for 31%. GET INTO SHAPE THE EASY WAY A revolutionary treatment for both Men and Women By Rachel Gold Fashion & Beauty Editor I arrived for my treatment feeling a little apprehensive yet slightly excited as the Electro slim treatment had been described to” Guarantee inch loss” and to show “ Immediate results” I think it is important to say at this point that I am not over weight and I do train regularly. However I have a fair amount of cellulite on my hips and bottom, which is really unsightly, and I just cannot seem to shift it no matter how many squats I do! So it was my aim to target those areas in particular. My fears were elayed and nerves calmed when I was met at reception by the delightful and friendly nutritionist Lamiss. During our consultation I was given a print out of my body composition analysis which is very comprehensive and extremely in depth and interesting. Who is this treatment for? The treatment is for anyone who wants to lose weight People who cannot or do not want to go to the gym Anyone who may have lost a lot of weight and wants to tighten and tone the muscles Women or Men who have cellulite and want to tone up Men who want to get rid of unsightly moobs For people who want to see immediate results I was weighed, and my body fat percentage was measured. We also discussed my lifestyle and eating habits. On to the treatment room, which was nice and calm with a relaxing atmosphere. I was measured with a tape measure at different points of my body. I hopped onto the bed and the pads were then applied. The current of electricity passes through the pads into the body, the current may be increased or decreased dependant on the client and tolerance level. It was a bit unusual at first, however it felt like a fairly firm all over body

massage. For 45 minutes I was relaxed and listened to soothing music. I could feel my body being toned! When the treatment was finished I felt refreshed and a little tingly but best of all I had lost 7 inches of my total body measurements. The appearance of my cellulite had changed also. I felt much more toned and trim. The treatment is definitely very different and far more effective than other treatments I have tried. I am sure if I did a course I could get into my bikini and not have to hide behind my sarong anymore, Highly recommended. What The Treatment Is Repetitive variable electrical pulse waves are sent into specific zones in your body through the use of skin contact electrodes. This produces rhythmic and powerful subcutaneous muscle contractions, resulting in the surrounding fat cells being used to supply energy. This breaks down adipose tissue and increases blood circulation resulting in fat reduction, muscle rehabilitation and development. Benefits Weight loss and body toning L oss of inches R educes the appearance of cellulite and tightens your skin I ncreases blood circulation and improves lymphatic drainage N o pills, no surgery, no exercise I mmediate results guaranteed www.electro-slim.co.uk

Be A Sleeping Beauty INDULGE IN SOME OVERNIGHT NOURISHMENT. LISA HAYNES REVEALS THE POWER OF BEAUTY SLEEP.

A

s the clocks turn back, once again night-times have become longer and darker. If you're feeling glum about the official onset of winter, why not reap the benefits with a little hibernation? A good night's sleep is highly underrated, and can work wonders for radiant skin and glossy hair. "Sleep is when your body does more of its repair work, and not getting enough shows up both physically and emotionally," explains sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski. "An undisturbed and restful night offers an abundance of beauty benefits and can be enhanced further by deep conditioning treatments for your skin and hair." Aim for dreamy looks when you wake up with our guide to good Zzz's. 6 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

PILLOW TALK No matter how snuggly your duvet is, if your bedroom doesn't provide the optimum conditions, you may struggle to reach your beauty sleep potential. Regulate the temperature of your room. Ramping up the central heating at night can lead to dried-out skin and frizzy, brittle hair. Dr Idzikowski advises: "When the central heating is on and the room is hot and dry, we can toss and turn to cool down. Either use a humidifier or place a bowl of water by the radiator. is will help to make your skin and hair less arid." Sleeping on your back in a slightly raised position aids the body's natural drainage process to avoid puffy eyes and a bloated face. Industry experts also swear by silk pillow cases to boost your beauty at night. "Silk is much more gentle on the skin and hair,"

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

Dr Idzikowski explains. "Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can prevent hair thinning and split ends. e weave in a cotton pillow can be quite harsh on hair, pulling it in different directions resulting in breakage." SLEEPY HEAD Eight hours is the magic optimal amount of sleep but it can be elusive. If you have trouble nodding off, indulge in some snooze-enhancing activities, like a luxurious bubble bath. Lavender oil also has calming properties to help you drift off when applied to your pulse points. Alternatively, dot under your pillow or add a few drops to your bath. Avoid a night of disrupted sleep by calming your senses before bedtime. is Works has developed a Deep Sleep range, from £12 (selected Boots stores), specifically designed to help you relax with pre-bedtime pampering. "Try and get into the habit of a pre-sleep routine," suggests Sleep Patch-It creator Amy Wong. "Soak your feet in warm to hot water for about 10 minutes. A good foot massage can also promote sleep because our feet have the highest concentration of reflexology zones." Beware sleepy heads, there is such a thing as too much shut-eye. Aesthetic nurse practitioner Kerrie-Jayne Salcedo warns that over-snoozing can leave you bleary-eyed in the morning. She says: "Skin repairs itself when you're at rest, so the more 'quality' sleep you get the better but the result of a really heavy sleep is often puffy eyes." OVERNIGHT NOURISHMENT If you're too busy for treatments, try a product that works overtime throughout the night. Here's our pick of the best sleeping beauties:

Wake up with plumper, firmer skin as the rejuvenating rose and frankincense get to work while you grab 40 winks. Use two or three times a week and apply over a layer of face oil if your skin is extra-dry.

No7 Beautiful Skin Overnight Radiance Boost, £16 (Boots): Open your eyes to brighter, radiant skin with this hydrating pre-bedtime serum that simultaneously optimises skin renewal and mildly exfoliates. is Works No Wrinkles Night Repair, £45 (www.thisworks.com): Cheat eight hours' sleep and give nightmare fine lines the elbow with this rich night serum that revitalises tired and ageing skin.

TRIED & TESTED Sam Wylie-Harris boosts her brow power with semi-permanent make-up. Even though I was blessed with thick eyebrows and a natural arch, I raged war against them with a pair of tweezers long before the fashion for bold, defined brows a

la Kate Middleton. ey never grew back and I became a slave to pencils to help define my brows. I decided to end the laborious task of colouring in every morning with the help of semi-permanent make-up. Tracie Giles uses hypoallergenic pure mineral pigments which are colour blended to suit your skin tone and hair colour. My technician matched me to a medium blonde II. e first two-hour procedure is all about tweezing, shaping and defining the brow with a pencil before using a digital cosmetic tattoo device to apply the mineral pigment. Once happy with the shape ("Eyebrows should be sisters, not twins," says Pauline), she then spent half an hour on each brow scratching in the pigment and tracing it over the pencil. e first application is without local anaesthetic and the pin pricks are painful, but repeated strokes are then swabbed to relieve the pain. A moisturising balm is applied, which I have to repeat four times daily for five days, as well as avoiding getting my eyebrows wet. e redness lasted 36 hours, my browbone was slightly swollen and tender, but the results were already impressive. ree weeks later, I return for the second appointment (approx 45 minutes), by which time my brows had become gradually lighter. Pauline tweezed and pencilled them in again with a pencil before repeating the same scratching procedure to intensify, sharpen and define. e pain threshold was the same, but much quicker as Pauline was simply building on the colour. e results are so impressive, the pin pricks quickly become a distant memory. My new brows have opened up my eyes, framed my face and I wake up bright-eyed and bushy-browed with an extra, pencil-free 10 minutes in my day ■

TWO VERY DIFFERENT LOOKS

M

One very impressive service

oneyhillinteriors Ltd in Rickmansworth have the very best of two furniture worlds. Beautiful hand built English furniture produced to very exacting proportions and finishes and high tech state of the art kitchens, living room and bedroom furniture. The kitchen is now a multi functional space, for cooking, dining and living and is a critical part of the house, where all the family and friends get together. Most new build properties are creating large open plan areas for this purpose.

As this space needs to work hard, Celia Warbrick from Moneyhill says, we take a lot of care selecting our furniture, and source from a number of different suppliers, all of which are on display in their refurbished showroom in Moneyhill Parade. The choice is pretty diverse from traditional kitchens, and bedrooms in different woods, and painted finishes and bedrooms to high gloss handless furniture that can be used in many rooms from kitchens to media rooms. A new range of Italian furniture, has also just been sourced, and will be installed shortly. N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2 7 1

H OUS E & GA R D E N

To compliment the furniture Moneyhill are main Agents for Wolf and Sub Zero from the USA, Miele, Quooker, Aga and are proud to be showcasing a new Appliance brand to the UK, V-Zug imported from Switzerland. On display is a very comprehensive selection from V-’Zug including a fantastic Combi Steam Oven XSLthat enables the cook to use the sous vide method of cooking, much loved by chefs such as Heston Blumenthal in its ability to seal in flavour and colour. This is the first domestic combi steam oven that allows the cook absolute control of temperature that is needed for this vacuum method of cooking. Indeed a breakthrough in the world of technology. In addition to the Combi Steam, there are on display warming drawers, microwaves, a coffee centre, and the latest in induction hobs. Celia says “we work very closely with our clients to provide schemes that not only suit their lifestyles but also suit their budget. We do not charge for our planning service, and produce full working drawings from Architects drawings or home visits. We offer a full nationwide installation service, and recognise that the majority of our work comes from recommendation from happy and returning Clients.”

A COSY WINTER

RETREAT

You don’t always think of retreating to the garden during the long winter months, but a garden room can make this a real possibility

C

old, rain, frost, snow – usually we leave the garden to hibernate during the winter and stay curled up in our centrally heated houses. But often our winter gardens offer stunning views, and we can get a bit fed up with being indoors all the time. With a garden room from Crown Pavilions you can enjoy garden living all year round. Luke Dejahong, Managing Director of Crown Pavilions, explains, “Outdoor living is an all-year possibility with our garden rooms. We manufacture in the UK using Canadian Western Red Cedar as the main basis of our structures. It is one of the best natural insulating

7 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

materials and one of the most durable timbers for the outdoors. It is perfect for the UK climate. And we now offer fully insulated, doubleglazed argon gas-filled windows and doors, and solid oak rustic flooring”. Crown Pavilions manufacture a whole range of garden rooms which can feature sitting rooms with plasma screens, studies with storage and internet connection, screens and fold back doors, mood lighting for evening entertainment, heating, hot tubs, home gyms, and outdoor kitchens or barbecues for when the weather warms up.

H OUS E & GA R D E N

Even in the winter you can enhance your use of outside space. One of the very important details is the landscaping. “When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of how it fits into your garden design,” says Luke. “Our sister company, Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting. We advise and design the planting around the garden room to fit in with the style of your existing garden. You can landscape around the structure to create an integral part of your garden, at every season of the year.” Crown Pavilions have created some wonderful garden rooms for many UK and international clients. They specialize in providing a tailored, bespoke service. All the products are manufactured in the UK. A garden room should be an extension of your home, and you can put it wherever you want. Planning permission is not usually required but you should always contact your local planning officer, or let Crown Pavilions do that for you. They provide a seamless hassle-free product and service from order to completion.

All that is left is for you to turn up the heat, light some candles, decorate with some winter foliage, and you have a warm winter garden retreat for whiling away the long winter afternoons.

CUSTOM DESIGNS WITH FLAIR

ustom Kitchens and Bedrooms have designed and built stunning interiors for our discerning clients over the last three decades. But our real passion remains being able to create environments which give our clients the ability to have the kitchen they want at a price they can afford without having to make a compromise… Mrs Davey of Leighton Buzzard recently had one of these attractive new kitchens fitted by us and reflected on the quality, care and attention to service. From the initial 7 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

consultation and creative design right through to those extra special details which make all the difference she said that the result “totally exceeded her initial vision”. Like many of our clients, Mrs Davey had an idea of how she wanted her kitchen to look when she arrived at the showroom; but having seen the range of branded products available as well as those we design and build in the workshop, she was happy to let our designer (Pete Morgan) work his magic. By the time the final design was agreed she said that “it was like Pete had read my mind and then added a bit

more flair”. So having turned a dream into a vision which inspired Mrs Davey, the next part was to make sure her brief was delivered on time, within budget and looking even more beautiful than the picture we had drawn together. At the end of the project we asked Mrs Davey if she felt she had received value for money, and she replied “very much so; I believe that you do get what you pay for, but in this case it was all the extra special detail that made it truly beautiful and delivered beyond my expectation”. Projects like Mrs Davey are

the foundations of our business and as the majority of our clients come to us on recommendation it is important to us that they all receive a first class service. These pictures, along with the look of delight on her face when she viewed the finished work, are what inspire us each day. Thank you for being a client of Custom Kitchens and Bedrooms Mrs Davey. ‘Blenheim Steps’ dates back to the late 18th Century. It is a beautifully appointed and presented Grade II listed family house that has been extensively renovated and adapted in recent years to provide substantial and well appointed living accommodation in a stunning rural setting. Originally entitled ‘Blenheim House’ the current property was believed to have replaced a property that was built shortly after the Duke of Marlborough’s victory at Blenheim in 1704. In 1925 it became part of Mill Hill School and was sub-divided, with the ground floor being used as the ‘tuck shop’ with the prominent bow windows being added in 1926 and 1971. The property was subsequently sold as a private residence. It benefits from a most convenient location at one of the highest spots in Mill Hill, close to amenities yet in a lovely rural setting, with a stunning garden and swimming pool.
