Situated in Harpenden, this new location will allow Gallery Rouge to further display their extensive collection from internationally respected artisans. The spirit of hospitality and entertainment is alive and well this autumn at The Grove in Hertfordshire, the luxury resort known as London’s Country Estate. Once the country seat of the Earls of Clarendon, today the original 18th century Grade II Listed mansion sits alongside the contemporary West Wing. Inside, the design deftly acknowledges the house’s history, whilst giving guests an environment that is fun and relaxed – a compelling mix of fresh air and urban styling, the buzz of the town and the peace of a garden, rural walks and world-class cuisine.

Make a child’s

Christmas

M

ake this Christmas a truly memorable one by sending a child you know a magical Letter from Santa. For a suggested donation of £5 to the NSPCC, your child will receive a fun, colourful and personalised letter from the man himself – the perfect gift. Christmas is a busy time of year for Santa - last year 49,797 letters were delivered to children and families in North London and the East of England - but he always makes time to write to the children on his good list. There are five magical styles of NSPCC Letter from Santa for children of all ages, making them the ideal gift for families with more than one child as each child can receive a truly unique letter. Santa can even write a special letter to celebrate Baby’s First Christmas – a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Each letter is uniquely personalised with the child’s name, age, address, gender and best friend’s name, and there’s also the chance to include a final ‘P.S.’ thought from Santa when you order online. The letters are beautifully illustrated and arrive via reindeer mail to make the experience truly unforgettable. Children will be amazed

with an Letter from Santa that Santa knows them so well! By sending a Letter from Santa, supported by Heart FM, you can make a child’s Christmas and help the NSPCC to protect children all year round through its projects and services including ChildLine – the UK’s free, confidential 24-hour helpline and online service for children and young people in distress or danger. Every £5 raised by Letter from Santa will help ChildLine be there whenever a child seeks help either online or by phone. And every £25 raised will enable a trained practitioner to deliver one hour of support through the NSPCC’s helpline for adults who are concerned about a child. The reindeer mailroom will be open from 1 October until 17 December 2012, and all those who request a Letter from Santa this year will be entered into a free prize draw to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Lapland for a family of four.

From 1 October, you’ll be able to find us online at www.nspcc.org.uk/santa or alternatively you can call 0845 839 9304 to place your order.

REGENT STREET

MOTOR SHOW

egent Street Motor Show takes place on the world renowned shopping thoroughfare Regent Street. A revised 63 mile route has been selected with the finish line moved to Regent Street. The show is a unique platform for manufacturers to display and demonstrate their new and future ‘green’ vehicles and developments to members of the public. The event, which is owned by the Royal Automobile Club, and sponsored by RAC Motoring Services, was first introduced in 2010 to showcase low energy use vehicles. It features competitors driving electric, hybrid, hydrogen and low-emission conventional petrol and diesel cars on a 63-mile route from Brighton to London. Now recognised as the world’s leading low-energy driving challenge, the event is unique in being free to the public to spectate and a real-world test of current and future vehicle technology. The RAC Future Car Challenge is increasingly important as awareness of low energy use and low emission vehicles begins to grow rapidly. There has been a significant growth in sales of hybrid petrol-electric, electric-only and range-extended cars. A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said: “Every car manufacturer is going to have a hybrid model on its lists by the end of this year, even Ferrari.” Electric car charging experts British Gas return this year as the official 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2

The RAC Future Car Challenge is one of three flagship events owned by the Royal Automobile Club taking place on the weekend of 3rd & 4th November 2012. The other two are the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, the world’s longest running motoring event, and the Regent Street Motor Show. Together they make for the largest free-to-spectate annual motoring spectacular in the UK, if not the world.

The Spirit of Christmas AT THE GROVE IN HERTFORDSHIRE

he spirit of hospitality and entertainment is alive and well this autumn at The Grove in Hertfordshire, the luxury resort known as London’s Country Estate. With 50% off your second night this autumn you can enjoy all that is on offer at The Grove for less. This October take the kids for a half term escape at The Grove with 3 nights for the price of 2, because two days is never enough

with all there is to do for families at The Grove. Parents will love the time to explore the beautiful landscaped gardens, master a round of golf on The Grove’s championship golf course or sink into a superb ESPA treatment at the much-lauded Sequoia spa. Children will find a stay at The Grove truly magical. A must for any Harry Potter fan, The Grove has created a truly spellbinding experience, ‘A Magical Tour for Muggles’, starting from £350 per room per night and including overnight accommodation in the contemporary West Wing, breakfast and two tickets to the neighbouring Warner Bros. Studio Tour. A home-from-home for many of the stars during the filming of the international blockbuster series, The Grove is the perfect place to stay when visiting the sensational new Warner Bros. Studio Tour.

F E AT U R E

For Christmas 2012 The Grove takes all that’s best about the season – family, children, good food and time together – to offer its guests a vintage-style Christmas for 2012. Family Christmas breaks start from £1,338 per room, based on two adults sharing and children sharing their own room can stay for two nights from £669. Guests can enjoy a fourth night on a complimentary basis when they book one of the three night festive breaks which start from £1,798 per room, based on two adults sharing. All prices include breakfast, Christmas Day lunch and a selection of activities. The Grove is the perfect setting for a traditional family Christmas. Set in 300 acres of parkland, woods and gardens, there is plenty of space to let off steam. Inside, there will be a brilliant choice of things to do for every member of the family, whether they are young at heart, or young in years. The staff at Anouska’s kids club (recognised by OFSTED as ‘outstanding’) will act as Christmas ringmasters, to keep younger children happy whilst parents can abscond to the spa, the spectacular golf course, or just relax with a spot of afternoon tea by the fire. For dining The Grove has three restaurants to choose from – Colette’s, The Glasshouse and The Stables – all bound by a common passion for quality, seasonality and simplicity. Leading the way is Colette’s, the elegant à la carte restaurant in the heart of the 18th century mansion and at the helm is rising star Head Chef Russell Bateman. A protégé of Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, Russell has already won 3 AA Rosettes in the 2011 AA Restaurant Guide and an entry in the 2012 Good Food Guide for Colette’s. Bringing his own creativity and flair to the food on the menu at Colette’s, Russell’s skill is to combine classic flavours with the more adventurous. Russell has created a series of culinary master classes taking place this winter at The Grove on 9 November, 18 January and 8 March 2013. The master classes have been designed to be accessible, to improve kitchen knowledge and build confidence in creating more adventurous flavour combinations. Students will glean valuable advice from Russell, as he prepares cooks and serves a series of dishes which are easily recreated at home. Each master class will focus on a specific seasonal ingredient and will be followed by lunch and a wine tasting at Colette’s. For a lively and buzzing atmosphere, book a table at The Glasshouse, described as an “international theatre of cooking”, with its open kitchens and delicious fresh buffet offering an enticing array of British, Mediterranean and Asian dishes. The Grove has always been family-friendly and The Glasshouse especially has something delicious for everyone, from concerned parents to toddlers craving pasta and puddings. Giving families that extra incentive to indulge, children aged 12 years and under can dine with 50% off, and children under two years of age can dine for free. In the original 18th century stable block, The Stables restaurant has a wholesome and rustic feel to it – perfect for the whole family. Children are even served on special spotty Emma Bridgewater china, alongside small-sized cutlery. Head Chef Christopher Mouyassi uses the very best in seasonal ingredients to create informal yet gorgeous comfort food, which has been recently awarded an AA Rosette for innovation. His homely menus are bursting with classic British flavours including succulent steaks, wood-fired pizzas and warming autumnal pies. For guests who prefer the informality of light lunches and tea, the four elegant Lounges and The Library in the mansion provide peaceful hideaways, overlooking the enchanting Formal Gardens through French windows. With open fires in the winter, these historic rooms are just the place to while away time over a game of scrabble or the day’s newspaper; breakfast, light meals and snacks are served daily, while Afternoon Tea daily from 3.00pm-5.00pm. For those wanting to burn off a little culinary indulgence, watch The

Grove’s spectacular 300 acres in all their changing glory on foot, bicycle or with a round of golf on The Grove’s championship golf course. With the highest standards of service and course maintenance, golfers can enjoy a summer quality course throughout the winter months. This winter, golfers can enjoy ‘all you can play’ golf. If that sounds like too much fresh air then head to Sequoia, the award-winning spa, for a warming wrap or hot stone massage. With so many relaxing distractions, a trip to Sequoia must include a dip in the striking black mosaic tiled indoor pool. long with the support of our patrons (who include Sir David Attenborough, Professor Dr David Bellamy, Alan Titchmarsh, Emilia Fox and Baroness Helena Kennedy) the project was launched in March 2008 at an event at the Royal Society in London. Building work began in September 2008 and the image here shows the dome area under construction. Once completed in Autumn 2013, it will be the biggest butterfly experience in the world and the Biome (100m in diameter x 17.5 m high) will be big enough to house the footprint of Stonehenge seven times over. Once completed in Autumn 2013, it will be the largest walk-through experience in the world, big enough to house the footprint of Stonehenge seven times over. Phase I - Spring 2009 The site was created in the shape of a butterfly’s head and the designer gardens competition, Future Gardens, was launched. The wildflower meadows were created and Ivan Hicks’ gardens were also opened, plus a cafe, shop and plant boutique. We celebrated the Very Hungry Caterpillar’s 40th birthday too. Phase II - Spring 2010 The education focus is launched next, to include the Butterfly Breeding House, the Insect Study Centre, the Chrysalis Lake, new gardens, picnic areas and the developing children’s play area. The Nectar House Cafe and new shop are opened too and the landscape is very much more developed. Phase III - Spring 2011 This phase will show further development of the site including the addition of an exhibition of Leafcutter Ants, and the exciting extension of the childrens play area. Phase IV - Commencing Winter 2012 The final stage will see the construction of the massive rainforest Biome, an amazing structure 100 meters in diameter and home to over 10,000 tropical butterflies, hummingbirds, insects, spiders as well as tropical plants. With the largest walk-through experience in the world, to include rope walkways, Maya caves and ruins to explore, streams and tropical rainstorms. The project will incorporate a living rainforest, yards from the M25 and M1 and a tribute to our tropical and native butterflies. Nursery and school visits In 2011, we have had 152 schools visited us which included more than 2 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2

7000 school children and 2000 teachers/parents. This year as part of Phase IV of the project, we are focusing on educating everyone who visits us about the decline of the butterfly species and what we can do to attempt to reverse it. It is anticipated that 40% of visitors to the Biome, once it is completed, will be children and we are determined to do all that we can to encourage them to understand the butterfly species and what can be done to preserve it. We are very fortunate to have a new, dedicated teaching area The Insect Study Centre, generously sponsored by The Royal Entomological Society. We are using this centre to encourage schools to bring children during term time to learn about: he Lifecycle Of The Butterfly T How To Study Insects We are also using the centre as an activity area during the holidays and please visit our What’s On section to find out more details about different events.

The vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven’t got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. 62 catwalk shows and 20 presentations took place across the 5 days. Burberry Prorsum Show Shines On London Fashion Week A-listers packed a marquee in Hyde Park for the Burberry Show, with Harry Styles and Samantha Cameron among those in attendance. The Burberry Show is more of an experience than a fashion show. Over 1,000 people attended for what has become one of the most exclusive and talked about events at London Fashion Week. Samantha Cameron, Anna Wintour, Mario Testino, Dita Von Teese, Harvey Weinstein, Dev Patel, Harry Styles of One Direction and Andy Murray took their seats on the front row. They also unveiled a flagship store on London’s Regent’s Street, boasting a multimedia experience for the customer. prettiness. Westwood’s 80s muse, model and actress Sara Stockbridge took to the mic rocking out with her bleach blonde locks, green eyes and tartan two-piece underneath the gorgeous arches of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to set the scene for the outrageous show entitled ‘Climate Revolution’. Keeping things green, the Red Label collection was inspired by British royal gardens which became clear with Charlotte Free debuting an avantgarde flower headpiece at the start of the show. From Renaissance style to the Victorian era, the garden has catered bowling to tennis, picnics to weddings and even the humble garden party, which Westwood took as inspiration for her micro checks, fine wools, lily pad fluid jersey, metallics and regal midnight blues. Headpieces were a real focus, from simple straw hats to flower garlands and printed silk head-scarves, whilst point toe heels and boots were a footwear feature point. Models sauntered down the runway with bright painted faces, heavy blue eyelids and tight 50s curls in true Westwood style. As the show drew to a close, it was sad to see the end of the luxurious fabrics and sequinned wonders, but we knew something was around the corner. The lady herself skipped onto the catwalk with Alice Dellal and Charlotte Free in toe draped in rich bronze opening out a sign saying ‘Climate Revolution’.

Lady Gaga opens Philip Treacy’s show Milliner Philip Treacy marked his return London Fashion Week with a show opened by Lady Gaga and featuring only black models. Treacy, the designer whose hat caused a stir at last year’s royal wedding, was used the Royal Courts of Justice for what was his first show in the capital in a decade. Gaga was on hand to open proceedings – although she surprisingly declined to sing at the event. Instead she took to the catwalk in a pair of towering platforms by Alexander McQueen and a pink flowing gown which covered her face, declaring Treacy to be ‘the greatest milliner in the world’. The show paid tribute to Michael Jackson, with one hat featuring a mini fairground based on the late singer’s Neverland ranch. Featuring models Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek and singer Grace Jones, all models on the catwalk wore items from Jackson’s wardrobe teamed with a Treacy hat. Christopher Kane Day 4 of London Fashion Week, saw one of the most high profile designers take to the spotlight to present his Spring / Summer 2013 offering. The Central Saint Martin’s graduate is known for his attention to detail in the form of embellishment which tends to really step outside of the fashion box, pushing boundaries in a forward thinking, yet somewhat sinister, way. The show set up, portrayed this, rebuffing all the fashion week front row nonsense, with a super long holographic catwalk with only one single row.

Beginning on white (like so many of the Spring / Summer 2013 collections this London Fashion Week), focus lay quite clearly on texture and shape, with zips, cut outs, tailoring and detail. Moving on to powder pinks and neon yellows, in super simple and minimalist shapes, there was a focus on origami style fold-over texture. Then came the detail; ruffled modern textures made an interesting highlight alongside embellished lace and sheer organzas. Stand outs for me included the perspex style ruffles in pastel shades and ultra modern embellishments. Mulberry With a star-studded front row and clothes inspired by an English garden. Eleven Mulberry handbags lined the floor in front of the company’s celebrity front row at Claridge’s. There were fashion show regulars including Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo.Jessica Ennis was there too, sporting a Bayswater bag. They can usually be found wearing tight restrictive corsets for their roles in hit BBC show Downton Abbey. But Joanne Froggatt and Elizabeth McGovern opted for something more comfortable as they made an appearance at the Mulberry show. The pair led the way for famous faces attending the highly-anticipated show. With all the front-row attention Emma Hill’s collection had to compete, but it did by lining the way into Claridge’s with acid pastel garden gnomes and garlanding the catwalk with climbing roses: the show was themed around an English garden. From racy, oversized biker jackets to staid long peacoats

via side-pleated skirts and gardening-unsuitable booties, most everything featured kooky floral or gecko motifs. Pleated-at-the-neck shirts in apricot and sunflower yellow (motif-free) were demure yet devastating, there was a beautiful Windsor-collar gecko jacquard suit, and a three-year old poodle named Max made his London fashion week debut wearing a matching jacquard ‘dog peacoat’. Jasper Conran Jasper Conran lit up London Fashion Week with a tropical inspired show, combining floral patterns and vibrant colours. The show gave a hint of Spring as he paraded his multi-coloured creations down the runway amongst neon lights and a catwalk made to look like grass. Walking barefoot, models sported the light-hearted creations which came in summery shades of orange and pink, with bold bright patterns and vibrant accessories. Conran revealed that he drew inspiration for his latest collection from cowboy boots and other aspects of American culture. I’ve done denim for the first time on the catwalk, so it starts quite sort of blues and whites and silvers. And then it explodes,’ the designer told Reuters. Everything has a reference back to Americana, so it’s all logically done, with a healthy dose of illogicality’ he added. Conran showed his playful side during the show, which was attended by the likes of TV presenter Christine Bleakley Jodie Kidd and Lady Victoria Hervey. House of Holland The catwalk was House of Holland was not in the usual setting, Holland’s collection was held in a car park transforming it into a clubbing paradise. Titled, ‘Buzz Kill’ the collection was full of vibrancy and full of fun, Cue the cropped jacquard trousers, embellished beanies, nineties grunge dress, oversized plaid shirts and bomber jackets – this collection did not stop giving. While most designers would make do with just one big name,

the 29-year-old fashionista had his front row graced by the likes of Kelly Osbourne, Alexa Chung, Nicola Roberts, Pixie Geldof and Poppy Delevingne. Known for his bold, colourful and irreverent pieces, the designer recently said: ‘I design with a London girl’s aesthetic in mind and love to see girls wearing my designs in their own unique way”. John Rocha John Rocha proved his fashion idol status with his new Spring/Summer 2013 collection. The designer unveiled an ultra-feminine range that featured frills, demi-couture textures and layers of organza in his signature voluminous style. Rocha has stuck to his forte of creating ladylike designs, making his garments resemble a beautiful garden of pale lavenders, mints, and lemons. He also offered contrast in the form of gun metal, champagne, and black and white ensembles in an array of luxurious fabrics. He played with proportions and experimented with strips of frilled cotton lace without moving too far from his trusty colour palette. To complement the whimsical theme, models took to the catwalk in large, matching cloud-like hats sculpted from folds of organza. Catwalk designers for Spring/Summer 2013 Collections also included David Koma, Fred Butler, Issa London, Louise Gray, Matthew Williamson, Nicole Farhi, Osman, Paul Smith and Temperley London. New exhibitors for SS13 include: Archibald Optics, Carla Fernandez, Danielle Romeril, E.Tautz (Womenswear), Hemyca, Honest By, Imogen Belfield, Jerome Allen Lorico, Loup Noir, Marques ‘Almeida, Mich Dulce, Modern Love, Negarin, Paper London, Rosantica, Richard Braqo, Sophia Webster, White Tent and Willow. Week. New presentations to the schedule include Lucas Nascimento and Marques Almeida as part of the NEWGEN sponsored by Topshop scheme, Huishan Zhang and Willow. Official catwalk shows are: J.W. Anderson, Michael van der Ham and Simone Rocha. The newly renovated West Wing housed a brand new dedicated shoe collective showcasing a cross section of brands including Cordwainers graduate Joanne Stoker, French Sole, architectural shoe designer Julian Hakes and Kat Maconie; the eco sustainable platform Estethica; BFC Rock Vault sponsored by International Palladium Board and the new buyer’s liaison point supported by Samsung. This season’s Fashion Forward is sponsored by eBay Fashion and the Mayor of London, supporting Henry Holland, Louise Gray and Mary Katrantzou. In a first for London Fashion Week, Jonathan Saunders has worked with the BFC to create bespoke visual event branding and marketing materials that was used across London Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer 2013 season – based on an adapted version of his ombre print from Resort 2013. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe, with international press attending from 42 countries. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter

jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer collections during last month’s London Fashion Week. The direct value of the UK fashion industry to the UK economy is £21 billion (source: BFC Value of Fashion Report 2010) The UK fashion industry is estimated to support 816,000 jobs and is the largest employer of all the creative industries. The sector also provides opportunities to minority groups to a greater extent than most other creative industries (source: BFC Value of Fashion Report 2010) ‘2012 has been an unforgettable year for our city and the serotonin is still flowing with the launch of the talentfest that is London Fashion Week. We have astonishingly creative people working in the capital, bringing energy and ideas as well as generating business. Over just a few days Fashion Week showcases our best fashion designers, puts London’s creative industries on the front pages and brings in over £100 million of orders alone” The Mayor of London Boris Johnson Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons). London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. www.londonfashionweek.co.uk

GET INTO SHAPE THE EASY WAY A revolutionary treatment for both Men and Women By Rachel Gold Fashion & Beauty Editor I arrived for my treatment feeling a little apprehensive yet slightly excited as the Electro slim treatment had been described to” Guarantee inch loss” and to show “ Immediate results”

increased or decreased dependant on the client and tolerance level. It was a bit unusual at first, however it felt like a fairly firm all over body massage. For 45 minutes I was relaxed and listened to soothing music

I think it is important to say at this point that I am not over weight and I do train regularly. However I have a fair amount of cellulite on my hips and bottom, which is really unsightly, and I just cannot seem to shift it no matter how many squats I do! So it was my aim to target those areas in particular. My fears were elayed and nerves calmed when I was met at reception by the delightful and friendly nutritionist Lamiss. During our consultation I was given a print out of my body composition analysis which is very comprehensive and extremely in depth and interesting.

I could feel my body being toned! When the treatment was finished I felt refreshed and a little tingly but best of all I had lost 7 inches of my total body measurements.

Who is this treatment for? The treatment is for anyone who wants to lose weight People who cannot or do not want to go to the gym Anyone who may have lost a lot of weight and wants to tighten and tone the muscles Women or Men who have cellulite and want to tone up Men who want to get rid of unsightly moobs For people who want to see immediate results I was weighed, and my body fat percentage was measured. We also discussed my lifestyle and eating habits. On to the treatment room, which was nice and calm with a relaxing atmosphere. I was measured with a tape measure at different points of my body. I hopped onto the bed and the pads were then applied. The current of electricity passes through the pads into the body, the current may be

The appearance of my cellulite had changed also. I felt much more toned and trim. The treatment is definitely very different and far more effective than other treatments I have tried. I am sure if I did a course I could get into my bikini and not have to hide behind my sarong anymore, Highly recommended. HOW TO BE HAPPY, HEALTHY AND HEADACHE FREE When it comes to headaches most of us think very little of reaching for a few over-the counter painkillers; but what if it isn’t a one-off? At AVOsteopath, Amit Vekaria has the answer, finding the cause and long-term solution to headaches, and just to prove the point, the first treatment with full examination and spinal education is FREE!

O

steopathy offers a service that most of us could benefit from, even though we mainly associate it with the treatment of back pain. More commonly seen are RSI, tendonitis and joint stiffness. What is all the more interesting about our resident Osteopath Amit is that he is also a naturopath, medical acupuncturist and is great with postural correction, enabling him to look at both the immediate problem and also at the long term solution. In conjunction, osteopathy will often prove an effective painkiller where other methods have failed – particularly where headaches are concerned. Looking at the structure and function of the body, osteopathy is all about the muscles, joints and bones, and as the immortal wisdom of Funnybones has taught us, all those little bones in our body are very much connected, which will explain why the practice is so effective in the treatment of headaches. Majority of the time, it is the poor posture which makes your spine misaligned, that can cause pressure at the base of the skull, giving a referral tension headache/migraine, which sometimes can last for days or bring on vertigo. It is AVOsteopath’s veritable toolbox of qualifications that makes their methods so effective including medical acupuncture, which is great for arthritis and lower back injuries; and naturopathy, which takes elements of nutrition and natural healing and adds a scientific twist into the equation to produce personalized treatments that are more about you than your average trip to the GP. Importantly, because of

4 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2

it’s comprehensive approach, just by realigning your spine for the long term, decreases headaches, digestive problems and stiffness whether you are newly born or geriatric. Pain is a plea from your body; a symptom letting you know there is an underlying problem and to stop you from damaging your body further. Don’t ignore what the body is telling you by suppressing those signals with analgesics. With just a few osteopathic sessions we can identify the root cause of your tension headaches, other injuries/pain or tightness in the body and treat them accordingly so that they won’t come back. The true long term solution for treatment of pain is to tackle the root cause of the pain. At AVOsteopath, Vekaria’s message is clear: “Don’t continue to suffer in silence by treating your aches/pains with over the counter medication; get a healthcare professional to diagnose the cause and get it treated!” And putting his money where his mouth is he is even offering your first treatment for FREE! … It’s practically pain free already!

Initial Consultation including Full Examination, Spinal Education and Treatment is FREE! Check out our video testimonials online to see how patient’s symptoms relate to you. For more information visit: AVOsteopath.com or contact Amit Vekaria on 07926 860 573 for FREE advice.

Catherine’s hairdresser of choice Richard Ward that styles the hair we all covet has now released his own range of couture haircare. His Clay Mineral Conditioning Treatment Masque (£23, mycouturehair.com) is brilliant if your tresses are craving an intensive, extra moisture surge and shine injection that doesn’t weigh down the hair. To improve your hair’s manageability, nourish and detangle the hair and reduce blow-drying time, there is only one product for the job - Moroccanoil (£30.45, 0800 310 1133). Infused with argan oil, this cult treatment will instantly absorb into the hair to create luminous shine and luxurious Duchess worthy locks. For the perfect Duchess inspired blow-dry at home, the BaByliss Big Hair (£45, Argos) styler creates voluminous hair with zero hassle. Big Hair’s large rotating hot air brush builds fullness, body and bounce with ease, whilst the soft bristles and ceramic barrel simultaneously add smoothness and shine. A

quick spritz of Richard Ward’s Volumiser Root Booster (£19, mycouturehair.com) before blow-drying will leave your locks ultra glossy and full of lustrous volume. Catherine is great at changing up her hairstyle to fit the occasion. On her’s and Prince William’s trip to Canada, Catherine sported a manageable yet stylish high ponytail. To emulate her look Flip-In Hair’s Pasoday Ponytail (£124.99, flipinhair.co.uk) available in 43 divine colours, gives you an instant ponytail that hooks around your existing hair making it impossible to detect that it’s not real. Also favoured by the Duchess is the classic and simple to achieve chignon. If your hair isn’t as thick as you would like to copy this hairstyle, then grab an Artemis Bun from Annabelle’s Hair Couture (£36, annabelleswigs.co.uk). This faux drawstring bun is available in 9 shades and is made with Flexihair which looks and feels like real hair for a natural finish. ■

Darcey Bussell Strictly Come Dancing’s new judge and the face of Sanctuary Spa Active Reverse skincare.

Q: Describe your daily beauty routine... A: In the morning I fully cleanse and follow with an exfoliator. I then apply Sanctuary Active Reverse Power Peptide Serum, followed by the Sanctuary Active Reverse Peptide Protect Day Cream SPF20, both of which hydrate and protect my skin. The only time I wear full make-up is in the evenings. Q: What are your must-have skincare products? A: I get quite dehydrated so I use a facial oil at night as it hydrates my skin leaving it feeling fresh when I wake up. Q: What are your essential cosmetics? A: After growing up in the theatre I enjoy not having to wear make-up any more but when I do my essentials are Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser SPF20, which I dab onto my cheekbones as a highlighter; Benefit Ooh La Lift under-eye brightener, and MAC Bronzing Powder for evenings. Q: What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without? A: Maybelline Falsies Mascara. I don’t wear make-up every day but I do try to apply mascara daily. I have mascaras all over the place - in my handbags, car there’s always one to hand! Q: What’s your favourite feature to accentuate if you’re glamming up? A: My lips. If I’m dressing up I’ll use a fab lipstick, like MAC Spice. Q: What’s your best bit of beauty advice? A: To keep your eyes looking open and big, never bring the eyeliner to the end of the eye, always lift it slightly at the end. I also apply my blush higher than my cheek bones to accentuate them. Q: How do you like to pamper yourself? A: I like to put on a face mask and take time out. My new favourite is the Sanctuary Active Reverse 30 Day Thermal Transformation Mask; I apply it and then relax as it warms up on my skin. Alesha Dixon Britain’s Got Talent judge and face of Impulse Sweet Smile bodyspray. Q: Describe your daily beauty routine... A: It’s minimal - shower, moisturising cream, a bit of mascara, bit of lip gloss, top knot in my hair and I’m good to go. A spritz of Impulse is great for a fragrance boost when I’m on the move all day. It’s very different when I’m working - it can take two hours but when I’m getting ready myself it’s more like 20 minutes flat. Q: What are your must-have skincare products? A: At the moment, I’m using Sisley. It’s a real treat but you only get one face and one thing I’m not ashamed to admit I spend a bit of money on is face cream. On my body I either use cocoa butter or coconut oil to keep my skin soft. Q: What are your essential cosmetics? A: I love Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream - it’s a classic. It doesn’t matter how many lip balms I try I always end up going back to that. MAC Zoom Lash mascara is brilliant. Q: What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without? A: My number one is coconut oil. It’s just really natural and a real multi-tasking product for skin and hair. Q: What’s your favourite feature to accentuate if you’re glamming up? A: I love nails - I even co-ordinate my polish to my outfit! When my stylist recommends things for me to wear, she’ll add a little note recommending what nail colour to wear. Attention to detail really makes a difference. Q: What’s your best bit of beauty advice? A: I think water is your best friend. If you drink at least two litres a day it just helps keep your skin looking really lovely. I swear by it, and green tea as well. I also use ice under my eyes to reduce puffiness. Q: How do you like to pamper yourself? A: I like to put a treatment on my hair. Again, I’d probably use my trusty coconut oil or Moroccanoil. After Britain’s Got Talent, I had so many things done to my nails, they were so weak, so I try to do a mini treatment on my nails most nights.

Kimberly Wyatt Got to Dance judge and BM Beauty make-up founder. Q: Describe your daily beauty routine A: I have a shower, exfoliate with natural Love the Planet Peppermint Sugar Scrub, wash my hair with LA Science Shampoo then I will add some Macadamia Natural Oil or Moroccanoil to my hair afterwards as I love natural products. Q: What are your must-have skincare products? A: After moisturising, I use BM Beauty Naked or Stripped Foundation, which is great for my skin as it’s all-natural and antiinflammatory so gives me a flawless polished finish. At the end of each day, Inika Certified Organic Eye and Make-up Remover is great - I love it, again because it’s natural.

Q: What’s your best bit of beauty advice? A: Contouring. My make-up artist is an expert and has taught me how it’s done. It’s all about colour blocking and then blending. Q: How do you like to pamper yourself? A: I love a regular facial. I go to DestinationSkin when I’m in the UK - they have an amazing natural facial that uses pineapple and papaya extracts called the DermaQuest. I pamper myself at home with a hot bath and essential oils.

Q: What are your essential cosmetics? A: BM Beauty’s Noir Mineral Eyeshadow and Lash Thickening Mascara on my eyes and Inika’s Brow Pencil to perfect my eyebrows. MAC also have some great bold lipsticks, like Costa Chica, that I love to experiment with. Q: What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without? A: I love my BM Beauty Nude Lip Gloss as it’s a great handbag essential and I love the fact it’s non-sticky. Q: What’s your favourite feature to accentuate if you’re glamming up? A: My eyes are my favourite feature to play on. I love experimenting with different colours and looks. I like a classic smoky eye but I’m also partial to a pop of colour to mix it up. THE OLYMPIC RANGE OF INDOOR AND OUTDOOR POOLS FROM ORIGIN.

metre building, housing a 5.7 x 2.75 metre pool, and plenty of room for changing and gym equipment. All for £120,000. And for a limited time Origin will accept 10% VAT on that - as an incentive for you to be part of the Olympic race!

The outdoor life - Origin style

F

or over thirty years, Origin has been building cutting edge designer indoor pool houses. Over that time, the sophistication has increased dramatically, to keep ahead of the changing demands of the company's customers. Since the earliest days, sales, planning and progress has always been monitored at director level, and the teams of designers and builders have changed little, giving a consistency which has become Origin's benchmark. As an example, meet the all new Olympic range - proving to be one of Origin's great successes. Several buildings are currently underway, and many more are on the drawing board. e range comprises four main models, e Olympiad, Marathon, Arena, and Challenger. To celebrate 2012 and Great Britain's Olympic moment the Origin team put together these pool house packages, inspired by this most historic of games. With an accent on healthy living the designers built in fitness must-haves, such as a well equipped gym, swim jets and an exciting alfresco feel. In the Challenger alone there is all the equipment necessary to train for a triathlon - so it is well within reach of Origin customers to get in some serious training for Rio in 2016! rough the use of cutting edge technology and the finest new materials Origin has managed to bring in the four new packages at record breaking prices - and have included many of the most exciting advances available to today's swimming pool buyer. Temperature controlled pool and surroundings - of course. An exterior finish engineered timber construction. A wide choice of exterior and interior finishes and colours - so your new Olympic Pool House will match in with the colour, surroundings and fabric of your home. e company has even selected ten big canvas styles to maximise the look of your interior, featuring the sort of imagery that will suit this truly life changing installation. You can choose any two of these with the compliments of Origin. e entry style Olympic package is the Arena - an 8 x 4.5 PO TE B2 E 0R1220 1 2 5600 OSCE T BM ER

OUTDOOR OLYMPIC TOO… For the past thirty years an important part of Origin's business has become the design and construction of outdoor pools as well as their trademark pool houses. It is hardly surprising, since the company's design and construction teams have made it their business to have a complete understanding of swimming pool technology. Although Origin is recognised primarily as the leading indoor pool house company it would have been a shame if the potential customers who preferred the alfresco freedom of swimming under the sun (or stars) had not been given the opportunity to share the knowhow gleaned from the Origin team’s long established expertise. To further celebrate London 2012 it made sense to develop a range of outdoor pools with the sporting flavour of the Olympic indoor pool range. Origin is introducing these high tech Olympic outdoor installations to complete the picture. Four generous sizes are available - 10 x 4 metres, 10 x 5 metres, 12 x 6 metres and 15 x 6 metres. e packages include a concrete pool chamber, tile patterned pool liner (with an optional mosaic tile), stone copings and pool filtration system. Features include gas, oil or electric pool heating for comfortable swimming outside throughout the year, underwater lighting, bubble cover and roller, and stainless steel steps. An Origin pool is built to be easy to clean, so you can spend more time relaxing, and less with chemicals and a mop. For a further investment it is worth considering one of the many advances in pool covers too. As you may have noticed, Britain’s weather can be unreliable – so the company has developed a deep knowledge of the quickest and easiest ways to protect the water from leaves, and make it safe and secure for younger members of the family. COUNTRY WISE… Barn living is the phrase currently on the lips of the Origin team. ese delightful buildings have a real rural feel, hiding the cutting edge technology of the company's state-of-the-art product. Because they fit so beautifully into the country landscape they are often easier to get through the planning stage, and happily take some of the lovely gentle colours that the designers have to offer. ere is nothing better than swimming in your own garden, outside or under cover. Choosing an Origin design, unique to you, is a reliable and trustworthy way to get exactly the pool you want, from a company with vast experience in this specialist area. Origin's brochures shows a wealth of the company’s finest moments, and are an easy way to understand the different features and strengths of the different models. Ring 01895 823366 or email info@originleisure.com for your brochure pack.

It’s a great introduction to an exciting new way of life… www.originleisure.com ■

A dream come true

The Chloe James Lifestyle store was launched in St Albans in July 2010 by Donna Nichol and Maria Allen.

W

hilst Donna had always dreamt of owning a shop, Maria took a little bit of persuasion - however, coffee and cake was all it took! ‘We were sitting at my kitchen table’, says Donna, ‘when I put the idea to Maria. I’d already done a lot of research into opening a shop and, although I was really keen to make it happen, I knew I didn’t want to go it alone’. Both women have a creative background - Donna in fashion buying and Maria in print design. Their shared love of all things to do with interiors, fashion and design has made Chloe James Lifestyle somewhere that stands apart from the competition. ‘We love it when customers come up to the first floor (where they have a great selection of interiors and fashion) and we hear them say ‘I want to live here!’ It really makes all the hard work worthwhile!’ The Chloe James Lifestyle store is in a charming Tudor building just along from the Clock Tower and right on St Albans High Street. Complete with steep stairs and wonky walls, the small shop front belies what is to be found inside - two floors of gorgeous designer fashion, unusual gifts and stylish interiors, not to mention a fabulous selection of jewellery ranging from the very affordable Estella Bartlett to the covetable Alex Monroe, BexRox & Katie Mullally. ‘We like our customers to feel comfortable with us. If they are happy

5 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2

browsing that’s completely fine with us but, if they need help, then we are always more than happy to oblige,’ says Maria. The Chloe James Wishlist is, unsurprisingly, a very popular service - you can fill in a card with all the things you love in the shop and your family and friends can go in and buy from it for birthdays or Christmas. ‘We’ve also introduced a Corporate Gift Service’, says Donna, ‘where a company can approach us to help with their gift buying for either staff or clients. We can work with anyone from a small local business wanting to give a token of their appreciation to their 10 hardworking employees up to larger firms with a lot of employees and some very important clients to impress!’ But the most important development this year has got to be the launch of their website. ‘Visit us at www.chloejameslifestyle.co.uk ‘ say the pair. ‘Now you can shop with us any time of the day or night and wherever you are!’ For more information about Chloe James Lifestyle Visit the store at 12 High Street, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL3 4EL Call 01727 843431 or visit the website at www.chloejameslifestyle.co.uk

MADE TO MEASURE QUALITY REDEFINED AT FLAMIGO BLINDS

lamingo Blinds has been established since the early 1980’s, first starting out in a room in Cockfosters and then progressing to a small shop on Chaseville Parade, Winchmore Hill. We then grew to take on a larger shop at the opposite end of the Parade with separate premises in Bounds Green for the workshop. In 2008, after 25 year on the Parade, we decided to unite the showroom and workshop, and can now be found on the Cranborne Industrial Estate, Potters Bar. The showroom has been described as one of the best in North London. As members of the British Blinds and Shutters Association we offer a range of market leading products in addition to our in-house manufacturing facilities, for both internal and external blinds, together with awnings for the domestic and commercial sector. We are one of a few companies to have our own in-house sign writer thereby offering a fast and efficient commercial service; not only on canopies and awning, but also for shop signage. We constantly strive to deliver a first class service and offer best value for money, and welcome any enquiry, from a simple roller blind to a contract order for literally hundreds of blinds. We are Luxaflex’s premier independent North London dealer, supplying their full range of products, all of which can be seen in our showroom. We are also partners of Weinor and Markilux awnings –the best German manufacturers --and several of their awnings are displayed in our showroom.

We work closely with architects, designers and building contractors throughout London and the Home Counties, advising on various situations where blinds are required to reduce solar heat gain or where complex motorised blind systems ,using sophisticated technology, is required. Although London based, over the years we have undertaken projects as far afield as Cornwall, Liverpool, Brighton, Southampton, Scotland and Paris. Flamingo supplies several London Boroughs , including Barnet & Enfield, and local building contractors such as Niblock & Ardmore as well as national companies , like Wates and Mansell.

We understand that the choice of blinds and window furnishings is vast and can sometimes be quite daunting, but here at Flamingo Blinds our staff are highly experienced and can guide you every step of the way helping you to make the right choice for you and your home or office. All our products are made to measure for each specific individual situation. As well as our bespoke handmade to measure curtain service, we also offer the complete package of interiors blinds, exterior blinds, external and internal security shutters, plantation shutters, trellis security gates, awnings and canopies for the domestic and commercial sector. No matter how well made our curtains and blinds are they need to be fitted properly which is why we only use a team of experienced professional fitters who will ensure your curtains or blinds look exactly how you envisaged.

We are continually looking for ways to improve our service and from the original foundations and building blocks of our success, we never forget the most important aspect of our business is the customer.

DE LANDHAVOC ESCAPE YOUR GARDEN It’s time to get your garden back in shape with LandEscape

utumn is the perfect month for getting your garden back into shape. An unprecedented amount of wind, rain and the little sun we have had this summer will have played havoc with your garden, leaving your lawn looking wild, overgrown, patchy and tired. Now’s the time to get it sorted and prepare it for the onslaught of winter. There are lots of other jobs to do from mowing to leaf clearance, reseeding and adding Autumn treatments to green up your lawn. Whatever you do, the results will last you well into next year. Do not forget your planting beds and pots/troughs. Your summer bedding is coming to an end and now is the time to plan, change and plant out your new winter/ 6 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2

spring planting scheme to provide colour for the changing seasons. Adding woodchip and/or manure to the beds to dress, condition or mulch, planting bulbs and pruning the overgrown shrubs to rescale and define - the list goes on but all benefit the garden hugely as what you do to the garden in the winter has a huge knock on effect to what happens to the garden in the spring and ultimately the summer.

eriod Style Lighting was established by Electrical contractor Geoff Day in 1990. It had evolved from what started as an interest and hobby restoring antique chandeliers, using Geoff’s skills as a qualified electrician. The part-time business soon grew in the ‘old brick shed’ in the back garden. Increasingly over time, more customers were asking Geoff to design and supply bespoke lighting and lighting systems to suit their requirements. In response to this demand, the first Period Style Lighting showroom was opened in North London by Geoff, joined by his wife Gill who brought with her many years of experience gained from working for some of the UK’s largest retail businesses.

and attention to detail means that we can offer you a solution to your lighting projects. We specialise in bespoke lighting - many of our lighting fitments are unique, one-off individual items not seen elsewhere. With our vast array of stock, our product knowledge and years of experience, together with our stockists from the UK and the continent, we can take your requirements and ideas and turn them into reality. Period Style Lighting offers a personal and attentive service to all of their customers.

After 8 years in North London, again Period Style Lighting had outgrown its business premises, so in 2007 they uprooted once more and moved to their current location at Foxholes Farm, occupying a 6000 sq ft showroom and workshop, enabling Gill to provide the ‘front of house’ service to visiting customers where she can share her particular passion for designing handmade bespoke lampshades, and Geoff can realise customers lighting ideas and turn their designs into reality.

We would like to thank you for taking the time to read about our journey so far and would love to hear from you if we can be of any further assistance. GILL & GEOFF DAY

Alongside our 20 year-old lighting business, Period Style Lighting Ltd can give you something that few others can. Years of experience

DREAM BATHROOMS Bathrooms are probably the hardest working area in a house these days as we demand more of them than ever before. BY GABRIELLE FAGAN

T

o be successful, they should work as a practical space for the daily wash-and-go as well as being a haven dedicated to wellbeing and pampering. “Long gone are the days when the bathroom was simply a functional space. People are moving away from the Victorian-style basic bathroom and towards the modern, spacious spa feel,” says Anthony Howells, bathrooms buyer for B&Q. “They want the clean lines, minimalism, wet rooms and walk-in doorless showers, enhanced by chunky floating yet stylish fixtures such as units and frosted glass, which they see when they stay in hotels and want to replicate.” He predicts that, where space allows, the popularity of free-standing baths, becoming more sculptural in shape, will continue to grow as they provide a focal point in large bathrooms. Experimenting both with design and colour is a growing trend, according to Rita Rendo Castro, sales and marketing manager at Catchpole & Rye. “People are becoming increasingly design confident, with more opting to make a statement with a brightly-painted bath or patterned tiles,” she

says. “The bathroom is an ideal space to try out new colours in a small area which wouldn’t necessarily work in a larger living space. Dove grey is a chic but safe choice for walls and gives a neutral base which can be enlivened by other colour choices. Salmon pink and yellow are one of my favourite combinations as they’re elegant but have a warm, summery feel.”

Taking the waters has never been more pleasurable - so check out a bathroom solution for your home.

WATERPROOF STYLE Bathrooms are embracing technology so that they can be the ultimate, flexible retreats, says Cheryl Gurner, creative director at Bathrooms International. “The bathroom has benefited hugely from advances in technology in recent years. Bathroom-friendly flat screen televisions, fibre-optic lighting in showers which mimic a twinkling star effect and hidden speakers offering surround sound - all add up to the wow factor in this most personal space.” O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2 6 7

FRONTLINE BATHROOMS While Paul Flowers, senior vice president of design at Grohe, predicts that the bathroom will be transformed in the next 10 years, as it develops into a space fully-equipped to cater for health and wellbeing. “Developments in technology are already allowing us to equip it with personal lifestyle and health functions such as diagnostic mirrors, which measure and monitor the status of our physical health. “Lighting, projection and sound are bringing “entertainment” into the room, and can be programmed, just like showers, to precisely suit your mood at different times of the day. “As the barriers between the bedroom and the bathroom blur, the space will become more sensual, decorative and truly have the atmosphere of a fully-equipped indulgent zone.”

SMALL BUT PERFECTLY FORMED Although the glossy interiors magazines feature vast bathrooms, the UK has the smallest bathrooms in Europe. “But just because your bathroom’s small it doesn’t mean you need to compromise on the quality or style of fittings,” says Robin Levien, design director of Ideal Standard, which has a Space range designed for compact areas. “By utilising innovative design and clever storage, your bathroom can still be well equipped and a calm rather than crowded space.” He suggests wall-hung toilets with a cistern neatly hidden behind a wall or fitted unit; basins and showers which fit snugly into corners, and clever features such as a bath with storage

drawers at one or both ends. “A sliding door can release further space, while large-size tiles create an illusion of more space more effectively than small ones,” he says. “Don’t pack out the walls with cupboards and definitely avoid too much at high level as this can reduce ‘head space’ which, if the area is small, is claustrophobic.”

Splash out solutions Ideal Standard’s Space range includes an offset corner basin with semi-pedestal, £165.75, and Moments furniture bath with two end storage units, £3,611. A close coupled WC £228; a 500 Basin, £45, and pedestal, £40.

COLOUR WASH Colour’s back in fashion in homes and that’s being reflected in new ranges of bathroom furniture in a range of rainbow colours, which can brighten even the dullest space. “Add a pop of colour to your bathroom by installing a brightlycoloured basin or furniture,” says Ellen Tietz, marketing manager at Villeroy & Boch. “Sunflower orange, olive green and petrol blue are popular at the moment and sit beautifully alongside clean bright white ceramics.”

Splash out solutions Villeroy & Boch’s Subway bathroom furniture is available in petrol blue, as well as white and glossy grey. Vanity unit from £456.

B &Q’s Duchess Paintable baths, from £729, could be one way to introduce a favourite shade. All paintable baths are primed and must be painted with an acrylic based paint, such as Fired Earth Eggshell Paints, £17.98 for 750ml.

WASH & BRUSH-UP Revamping a whole bathroom isn’t always possible if the budget’s tight, so it’s worth looking at a more affordable update of features and accessories. “An easy, affordable and effective option is to replace some of the brassware and accessories, such as taps, radiators and mirrors,” says Emma Sturgess, marketing manager at Frontline Bathrooms. “These relatively simple changes can make a real difference to the look and style of the bathroom - delivering a totally fresh look.”

Splash out solutions Frontline’s range includes the chic chrome Stream Mono Basin Mixer, £110 (matching bath and bath shower mixer taps also available); a Windsor Mirror with integral lights and accessory shelves, £135. If you’re despairing about old, damaged sanitaryware, The Bath Business could float your boat. It re-surfaces a wide range of sanitaryware and also sources original classics. Restoration prices start from £204 for re-enamelling basins and shower trays; from £358 for re-enamelling baths, and from £180 for reconditioning or re-plating taps in brass. ecent figures released by the Ministry of Justice show that divorce is gradually declining, but behind the figures are some important implications. Michael Howard, a family lawyer at Taylor Walton solicitors provides an insight in to some of the shortcomings of existing legislation and the practical steps anyone either contemplating marriage or divorce should be taking to protect themselves and most importantly any children.

couples resolve the financial consequences of divorce or dissolution without attending court through an agreed order, but where this is not possible, the courts have a very broad discretion to redistribute the parties’ property and income. Consequently this often results in inconsistent outcomes and claims of unfairness, particularly by the party in the weaker financial position. In 2009 the Law Commission embarked on a consultation regarding marital property agreements. Earlier this year the Ministry of Justice asked the Commission to extend the consultation by conducting a targeted review of two aspects of the law that entitles married couples and civil partners to claim financial provision from one another on divorce or dissolution of their partnership.

The current divorce law in England and Wales has applied since 1970 with some minor changes. The comments below apply equally to civil partnerships, which only became possible in 2005 and can be dissolved by decree following a similar procedure.

DEALING WITH THE FINANCIAL UNCERTAINTIES

The number of divorces in the UK peaked in 2003, and has fallen since then, levelling off at around 120,000 divorces per year since 2008. The decline generally reflects the smaller married population and a higher average age at marriage. The younger a person marries, the higher the probability of getting divorced so the trend to delay marriage has partly contributed to the observed general decline in divorce over the last 20 years. Most worryingly is the fact that unmarried cohabiting couples separate at five times the rate of married families, so marriage or civil partnership has a distinct advantage in securing a long-term relationship.

The Commission will examine the extent to which one party should be required to meet the other’s needs after the relationship has ended. It will also consider how what is known as “nonmatrimonial property” (acquired by either party prior to the marriage or civil partnership, or received by gift or inheritance) should be treated on divorce or dissolution.

OF DIVORCE

A request for a decree can only be submitted after a year of marriage. It has to be based on irretrievable breakdown, demonstrated by one of five specified facts for divorce, namely adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion for 2 years, 2 years separation with consent or 5 years separation. Adultery does not apply to civil partnership dissolution. It is a two stage process, with a conditional decree, which is made final by decree absolute a minimum of 6 weeks and a day later. The court only needs to consider whether arrangements 7 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2

for children are satisfactory at the initial decree stage and will not make any orders about children if there is no dispute. Financial orders can be made at any time after the initial decree unless restrictions have been imposed by the court. Generally lawyers will advise against applying for the final decree until after the financial orders have been made. The process involving initial and final decrees works well as this allows a couple to reflect whether or not they really do wish to terminate the relationship. At present a marriage can

be ended without active consideration of either children or finances. Currently, couples often agree arrangements for the children at the outset of proceedings, sometimes while they still live in the same house. By the time of final decree some months or years later, circumstances have frequently altered, but the position is not re-assessed by the court. This may not prove to be in a child’s best interest, which remains the primary concern. There is no “formula” for resolving financial issues arising from a marriage/civil partnership. Many

Michael Howard is a Family lawyer at Taylor Walton solicitors, which has offices in Harpenden, Luton and St Albans and provides effective legal solutions to businesses and individuals across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and the South East. The Commission will not, however, be conducting a fullscale review of the law of financial orders. Rather, the aim is to bring clarity and predictability to two areas of that law that cause particular difficulties. A final report is expected in 2013 but it may be several years before any changes can be made to the law and consistency to outcomes achieved. With more people getting married or forming civil partnerships later in life it is increasingly likely that they have already acquired substantial assets before the union or will do so through inheritance at a much earlier stage of the marriage or civil partnership. The use of pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreements to assist and clarify matters and potentially reduce unnecessary court costs is therefore strongly recommended.

NAEA PRESIDENTIAL TEAM - MARK HAYWARD, JAN HYTCH, SIMON GERRARD

National Association Presidential Team

J

une 2012 was an important month for Simon Gerrard, Managing Director of Martyn Gerrard Estate Agents. On 14th June his wife gave birth to their third son and on Friday 15th Simon was honoured to be elected as Vice President of the National Association of Estate Agents.

The NAEA is recognised as the UK’s leading body representing the estate agency profession. Membership of the Association is only possible through formal qualification. The NAEA membership requires new members to have passed the independently examined Technical Award which consists of 4 modules (i) Security and General Law, (ii) Law relating to the Sale of Property, (iii) Best Practice relating to Residential Sales and (iv) Property Appraisal and Basic Building Construction. NAEA member agents therefore have the knowledge and expertise to guide you through your property transaction as smoothly and painlessly as possible. They operate under strict rules of conduct and must meet certain standards of ethical practice. Simon strongly believes that when buying or selling a property, which is likely to represent most families’ greatest single investment, the public should be able to rely upon their agent to be properly qualified. Many believe that all estate agents are qualified and licensed, this is unfortunately not the case, and there is nothing to stop someone being a butcher one day and opening as an estate agent the next! You wouldn’t go to an unqualified dentist so why trust the sale of possibly your largest asset to an unqualified estate agent?

7 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2

For the greatest protection you should use a “Licensed Agent” which means that not only is the owner qualified but that there is a qualified NAEA Member located at each branch of that company. In his role as Vice President Simon Gerrard brings experience, enthusiasm and a passion for property. He feels that it is essential for compulsory licensing of all estate agents to be introduced to ensure that the public are protected and can be guaranteed a level of service and professionalism. Martyn Gerrard Estate Agents are committed to raising professional standards which is why we expect and financially support all our staff in their study and training, so that they obtain the Technical Award in Sales or Lettings and then become members of the NAEA or ARLA. You can be sure you are dealing with an experienced and professional agency, by choosing a licensed NAEA member firm.

FUSION ‘DO IT IN STYLE’ WITH MURANO HOUSE LAUNCH

M

ore than 120 people attended the launch of marvellous Murano Housein Hadley Wood last week. Indeed, the queue of discerning home hunters and industry professionals desperate for a glimpse of the dazzling development almost brought Cockfosters Road to a complete standstill. Murano House is offered by Fusion Residential, a company with a reputation for creating the most incredible homes. The attention to detail is astonishing and no stone is left unturned (in fact they probably polish them all individually) in pursuit of perfection. Fortunately for guests, Fusion take their launch parties just as seriously. Murano House offers six luxury concierge serviced apartments boasting everything from waterproof flat screen TVs in the bathrooms,

prestige kitchens and spacious and beautiful custom built bathrooms and lounges. Everything is managed by Fusion’s trademark “Smart Home” technology delivered via wall inset iPads allowing remote programming and control of lighting, heating, air-con, sound, vision and security throughout the apartment. Winners of the 2011 UK Property Awards, Fusion have used the blueprint from their hugely successful Amara Lodge project just along the road for this development. Guests at the launch were clearly stunned by what they saw inside, and equally so by what they saw outside and the unspoiled countryside views surrounding the property. The front looks over rolling farmland while to the rear is Hadley Wood Golf Course. Guests sipped chilled champagne and dined on sushi on Murano House’s lush lawns and terraces while looking on at golfers putting on the 17th green.

Lucy & Clare, Debbie Williams and Peter Cunningham

Fusion partner Nigel Henry was understandably proud and delighted: “Having completed award winning Amara Lodge, the challenge was set to the Fusion design team – ‘the bar must be raised’ and raise it we did. From comments on the evening, we raised it in style. “It was great to see so many people in the industry recognising the detail in Murano House. “Well done to all at Fusion who created, built and specified what looks like being another award winning apartment block.”

Show Apartment open from Thursday - Monday Now only 2 apartments remaining priced from £1.65 - £3 million For Further information contact Debbie Williams 01923 216535 to arrange a viewing.

Luxury award winning home-maker Fusion Residential reached new heights with the launch of its latest multi-million pound home in Fortune Lane, Elstree, on Saturday.

guests at the launch party of Pennywell Manor enjoyed an eagle’s eye view of the property from a helicopter before it touched down gently on the manor’s manicured lawns, of which there are approaching an acre. Stepping back onto terra firma after landing, Fusion partner Warren Rosenberg admitted: “I’ve seen most of our developments from every angle, but never from the air before. It was amazing. “Looking down on Pennywell like that you can truly appreciate the magnificence of the property and the land that goes with,.” When the helicopter arrived more than 100 people – wishful home-hunters, industry professionals and some of the clever people involved in the Pennywell project’s conception and delivery - were already enjoying the unrestricted views over rolling Hertfordshire countryside, many relaxing on the broad wrap-around sun terrace of red cedar deck and giant Italian porcelain tiles. There are full height folding glass doors all around the side and rear of the house, in effect bringing the outside in, and the inside out.

Fusion, winners in the 2011 UK Property Awards, are famed for their attention to details and they must have organised the weather too, it was glorious. It was the perfect sunny day for bonhomie, sipping Pimms and nibbling bijou barbecued bites such as mini burgers, chicken and chorizo kebabs, and surf and turf skewers. But the helicopter, and the food and drink, as good as they all proved, were simply hors d’oeuvre for the main attraction. Star billing was most definitely reserved for the Manor itself, its elegance, its wonderfully imaginative design, it’s incredible attention to detail, and the mind-boggling technology that Fusion have harnessed to run the home. The Manor takes its name from the tiny well that sits near the front door. It has
