to provide for some of the country’s leading asset lenders. Today Fellows remains a family affair, as William’s great-great-granddaughter Jayne runs the business with her husband Stephen Whittaker, who is the Managing Director. The auctioneers now have over 80 sales a year specialising in watches, jewellery, coins and medals, silver, paintings, furniture, clocks, works of art and other collectable antiques. However, based on the number of dedicated annual sales, watches and jewellery make up by far the biggest proportion of the items they handle. Selling everything from rare collectable pocket watches and luxury modern timepieces, to parts for repair and service, Fellows has an exhaustive approach to the watch market, allowing buyers and sellers at both ends of the spectrum to find an auction that works for them (Pictured are a Rolex Navy Issue Submariner, or ‘Milsub’, from the 1970s and a modern IWC Romana Perpetual Calendar which sold earlier this year). A similar attitude is held for the jewellery sales, where a high-value modern diamond ring, is as at home as a lower value, more eclectic period piece, like this adaptable Victorian A LATE 19TH CENTURY pearl bangle (left). It is no surprise then that Fellows are proud of their ability to keep their growing number of sellers completely satisfied, regardless of what they consign. With the advent of this new location, Fellows hope, not only to give a better auction experience to its existing London clientele, but to encourage a new group of individuals and businesses to experience selling through a different kind of auction house; one which is unpretentious, unceremonial and well and truly in the 21st century. The only 10K race to be held at Hatfield House, the Willow 10K is a great race for beginners and experienced runners alike, offering the exclusive opportunity to see hidden parts of the picturesque Hatfield House estate not normally open to the public. Willow’s first three10K runs have been a great success with more than 1,500 people taking part and raising an incredible £100,000 for the charity. Last year Willow introduced the new team challenge, open again this year to schools, colleges, businesses, community groups, or any other group. The largest group to take part on the day win a team prize, so round the troops. Whether you choose to run or walk the route, every step and penny raised in sponsorship will make a positive difference to the lives of 16 to 40 year olds living with a life threatening illness. This year’s 10K promises to be another great event with 750 places available, every runner will receive a medal and goodie bag. There will also be an energetic warm-up on the day, music playing on the course and the Willow team will be there to cheer you on.
Every penny raised in sponsorship will help the Willow Foundation to provide positive and life-enhancing special days for 16 to 40 year olds living with life-threatening conditions including cancer, cystic fibrosis, motor neurone disease, organ failure and many other conditions. Every special day aims to provide beneficiaries and their loved ones with a break from the realities of their diagnosis and treatment. At a time of uncertainty, spending quality time with family and friends can help restore a sense of normality, boost confidence and create precious memories for the future. The Willow Foundation, based in Hatfield, was set up by Arsenal legend and former TV presenter, Bob Wilson and his wife, Megs, in memory of their daughter who died of cancer aged just 31. Starting the race on the day will be Bob Wilson, charity Co-Founder and Life President, Bob said: “This is our fourth Willow 10K, last year was such a great day we’re hoping this years event will be even better. Playing golf
has just got a whole lot easier G
olf is riding the crest of a wave in popularity. The exploits of Rory McIlroy in winning the US Open and the US PGA has generated huge media coverage. Soon we will be enjoying the exploits of the European Team in the Ryder Cup against our American foes. More kids than ever before are taking up golf and quickly playing to a high standard. Yet a lot of people think that
playing golf is not for them. Reasons cited include “it’s a difficult game to learn” or “I don’t think I’d have the time to justify the expense of joining a golf club”. Well, here’s some good news. Hadley Wood, rightly regarded as one of Hertfordshire’s top golf clubs, has taken a long look at how to attract new members to the club. Gone are the days of sticking you on a long waiting
list or expecting you to be a proficient golfer before allowing you to join. “We appreciate that people live busy lives and there are big commitments on their time,” says Alistair Cook, Hadley Wood’s General Manager. “We want to be as welcoming as we can possibly be to anyone interested in golf and we have created membership categories that will cater for different needs”.
One such offer is Associate Membership. It’s a fantastic entry level category for the keen golfer who simply doesn’t have the time to justify a full membership, but wants to maintain their handicap and work at their golf. It costs £750 for a maximum of 20 rounds a year with the option of buying a further 6 rounds at half the normal green fee. Associate members have access to all the club’s facilities, in the clubhouse and on the practice ground. Importantly they can gain a CONGU handicap and play in competitions at Hadley Wood and elsewhere. Another entry level scheme is Academy Membership. This is designed for beginners or lapsed players who want some tuition before returning to the game. Academy members join for an initial 4 months and enjoy weekly group tuition with a PGA professional. They have full access to the clubhouse and practice facilities. This membership category costs just £260 for 4 months, that’s 4 monthly installments of £65. “Joining a golf club as a new member or a returning golfer can be a daunting experience; it’s a complex game with rules and etiquette to learn. Our Academy Membership is designed to bridge that gap - to help new and returning golfers build the skills and confidence they need to take their games to the next level” commented Paul Foster, Hadley Wood Golf Club PGA Professional. For further information about either of these membership categories, please contact Alistair Cook, General Manager on 0208 449 4328 or email at: gm@hadleywoodgc.com

at the Lake Restaurant, St Michaels Manor
It’s no surprise that The Lake Restaurant is one of the very few restaurants in Hertfordshire to be awarded two dining rosettes and was also voted “Best Restaurant in St Albans” by Hardens (Restaurant) Guide. However, it is a surprise that so few people know how good it really is; apart from, that is, the masses of regulars it attracts... maybe they want to keep the secret to themselves? Perhaps it’s the unfounded perception that St Michael’s Manor Hotel is too “grand” or that a restaurant in a hotel just “doesn’t feel right”… how wrong could that be? At only £21 for a fabulous three course meal*, including coffee, you can enjoy arguably the best restaurant views in the county; very little else offers this sort of value for money these days. The brasserie-style Lake Menu was conceived in January 2009 as a shortened version of the popular A La Carte menu and offers a choice of three dishes per course. This allows the hotel to showcase its creative 24 SEPTEMBER2012
and versatile kitchen emphasizing the use of local, organic and seasonal ingredients. There’s always a vegetarian choice on each course; for example a beef tomato and goats cheese tartlet followed by a vegetable pot au feu, and a regular choice of a fish and meat dish to cater for every taste; try the luxury fisherman’s pie or braised lamb provencale with spring onion mash. Desserts are a must with the long serving pastry chef being let loose to create an amazing range of crème brulées and traditional English puds, or you could settle for good old cheese and biscuits with home made St Michael’s Chutney. Be quick though as The Lake Menu changes
every week so check it regularly as it’s always a great surprise.
You’ll never be disappointed with the A La Carte menu either. A broader selection than the Lake Menu with, among the tasty starters; game terrine of pheasant, pigeon and foie gras mousse with apple and shallot chutney or seared scallops with pea purée, black pudding and vierge dressing. Main courses include, amongst others, Duo of Duck: confit leg with toasted pine nut, five spice crusted breast with caramelized apple pain d’epice mille feuille, beetroot fondant and Jura jus, Black bream and Maine lobster
chowder with caviar linguine or Confit pork belly with Chorizo, wild mushroom and butterbean fricassée. The venue is also extremely popular for Cream Teas that are enjoyed in the conservatory style restaurant, lounges, bar and outside on the patio; all enjoying views of the magnificent five acre private garden, incorporating it’s own large lake. Sitting on the lawns or lakeside are always popular eating spots in the glorious weather. The atmosphere in the restaurant is always at its best when busy, no more so than on Sundays, which are nearly always a sell-out. What better place to enjoy a relaxed and lazy lunch with incredible food in a great setting. The hotel has food available all day whether it’s breakfast, bar snacks, teas, casual or A La Carte dining and prides itself on a high level of service whilst being relaxed and informal. Booking is usually recommended and the web site www.stmichaelsmanor.com is extremely informative.

EDUCATION
A DEBT OWED BY PRESENT
TO FUTURE GENERATIONS words Chris Roseblade, Deputy Head (Communications) Merchant Taylors’, Northwood These are uncertain times and many families are feeling the pinch. An independent education is expensive and meeting the fees involves real sacrifices for many families. It is a high price to pay if there is a good maintained school reasonably close at hand. However, even in these straitened times, so many families will continue to invest in an independent schooling for their child, because they are aware that a good independent school provides more than the effective routines of lesson, timetable and examination grade – it offers a life-transforming experience for your child. Most of us remember a childhood of summer afternoons that seemed endless, winter evenings around a blazing fire and the space to play amidst woodlands, fields and orchards. We remember having time –time for hobbies, for music and for sport. In our gridlocked, speed-camera, pressurecooker, Twitter-speed society, how can we pass on to our children that gift of time and space? Independent schools offer their own ‘time-space continuum’. The teachers give of their time without stint and the schools are fortunate enough to enjoy marvellous spaces. The teachers still “Serve them all My Days” by taking endless trips, leading countless activities and coaching a tremendous range of sports: just count the number of Team GB Olympians who attended independent schools! There is no glancing at the watch and no feeling of “roll on 4 o’clock”. The sector offers the peace and quiet where a young person can grow and learn to think without the obsessive electronic bells that divide days into bite-size portions and the endless cacophony of cyberspace trivia. Many schools have buildings of great aesthetic worth and grounds that are lovely. And in these spacious cathedrals of learning, young people have a window onto the past as well as an experience of the exciting knowledges and technologies that will shape the future. True, this is a privilege – but all the great schools teach that with privilege goes responsibility and in their commitment to the less able and less fortunate set a shining example of social responsibility and charitable endeavour. The sector preserves the civilized values of a gentler age, whilst embracing the latest in knowledge, technology and approaches to learning. It offers a space for the Fine Arts and for Classical Music; and for the great literary classics as well as the more modishly politically-correct authors that are the Exam Boards’ flavour of the month. It offers a space free from political agendas, newspeak jargon and the educational commissars. Looking at British education today, there are times when it seems - to paraphrase Einstein - little short of a miracle that governmental faddery and educational quackery have not entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry. The emphasis put on sport and activities reflects the fact that a good education is about character. Even in this over-legislated, bureaucratic age, independent schools provide a space where safe risks can be taken, a space free from the jostling, bad language, litter and bullying that seems to constitute modern life for any teenagers. There is the space to cultivate interests and hobbies and a love of literature and the arts that will last a lifetime. The schools offer old-fashioned values in a new context, but still, at their heart, lies the intent to provide a space to test one’s courage in a safe environment and to pit one’s wits against another youngster of similar calibre. In a sports match or competitive race, there are winners and losers 2 SEPTEMBER2012
and the pupils learn to win joyously and lose gracefully, rather than have that experience denied them because “competition is bad for children”. For a parent there is nothing more rewarding than seeing their son or daughter fulfil their potential, and then surpass it. An independent education inculcates an indefatigable spirit of aspiration and enterprise in a young person. It equips that child not only with a spirit of optimism, but with those more gritty and mundane skills that provide steel and backbone when facing knockbacks. It provides the confidence and ‘soft skills’ so in demand in today’s career ladder. Few lives will have the luxury of being failure-free and it is the resilience with which your child learns to confront and overcome setbacks that will make the difference between success and failure in the world beyond school. Those that lead in the future will have learned how to learn, as the relentless accelerator pace of change makes redundant aspects of knowledge once deemed essential and puts at a premium the mastery of once-unheardof skills. The illiterates of the 21st century will not be those who failed to master the dumbed-down syllabuses to the satisfaction of a Quango: they will be those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn whenever society demands it of them. In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while those who knew what to learn, but not how to learn find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists. In lieu of the homogenized conformist values and syllabuses prized by government that inhibit and imprison the creativity of the many dedicated teachers in the maintained sector, the independent sector creates conditions for learning that make for uniqueness, self-direction, and self-initiated learning. And there is diversity, with an enormous range of schools catering for every conceivable sort of child. Parents continue to opt for independent education because they know that whilst in terms of examination results and teaching there are many good state schools, the independent sector is offering more than good grades, it is offering values. Not merely value for money, but the immeasurable value of a happy childhood and the values acquired during that childhood, which remain crucial to the nurturing of balanced, happy and successful adults. These schools eschew the ‘cookie cutter’ mentality and will treat your child as a person, not a number on roll. Parents choose to dig deep because their own values as a family are shared by independent schools. They want their children to grow into adults who are secure in themselves, confident in their ambitions, imbued with a love of learning and with all those other benefits a well-furnished mind and well-nourished spirit can bring. And parents know that all these stems are rooted in a happy schooling that has placed a premium on achievement and responsibility in all areas of a young person’s life, not just those inside the classroom. A good education is a debt due from present to future generations and that is why, when the fees bill arrives, we continue to make out the cheque. Because if there is one area in which it does not pay to pennypinch, it is the future. It took the ghost of Xmas future to teach Scrooge this, but as parents we only have to glance at our offspring to know once and forever that their value is beyond price – and for that future we write the cheque of today to provide them with infinite reserves to draw on in their futures.

HAVING IT ALL OR
GIVING SOMETHING BACK?
A
words Lucy Elphinstone, Headmistress of Francis Holland School, Sloane Square (sister school to Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park)
s another wave of school leavers and university graduates turns up for the first day of ‘real work’ (not a phrase to use to any young person who has recently sweated through finals at a competitive university), the pride of their parents will be tempered by niggling anxiety if their child is a girl. It’s not a worry that can be voiced easily for it’s not politically correct to suggest that the question of gender makes any difference to a young person’s career path. Girls leave school believing there is nothing they can’t achieve. But the elephant in the room doesn’t go away, and recently it’s trampled all over a sacred feminist myth. An article in The Atlantic magazine in July by Anne-Marie Slaughter, a professor of politics and international affairs at Princeton University who served under Hillary Clinton as the director of policy planning at the State Department from 2009 to 2011, has argued that women can’t ‘have it all’. And her recent address to Oxford University students on the work-life balance for women made some radical proposals. The details of her situation – how she gave up a high-powered job in the Obama administration to spend more time with her husband and sons – are well known, but her ‘manifesto to women’ may not be. Slaughter asserts that despite the substantial gains in educational, economic and professional attainment in the last three decades, women are less happy today than they were in 1972. Well-being not wages is the issue. She believes that even if women have husbands or nannies who share the parenting load, they don’t feel as comfortable as men about being away from their children. She challenges the very definition of success – someone who climbs up the ladder the furthest in the shortest time - in an age of significantly higher life expectancy. Slaughter says that women should see their careers not in terms of a straight upward slope but as irregular steps with periodic plateaus and even dips (she calls these ‘investment levels) where a promotion is declined or a couple of years spent working fewer hours to help the family situation. Rather than concentrating on reaching the top of the ladder as quickly as possible, and delaying having children until later, women should have children before 35 or freeze their eggs. Count on
peaking in your late fifties and early sixties, rather than late forties, she advises, and use technology to be able to work more from home or at weekends. She urges pushing for school timetables which match work schedules and for it to be acceptable to talk about children and family commitments at work, citing the relationship between family-friendly policies and better economic performance. Perhaps most radically, she decries the ‘face-time culture’ of the macho work place and advocates space for play and imagination to free up creativity and innovation, referring to studies which show that this would be the single most important step in unleashing a ‘new culture of learning’. If what she says is true, it has profound implications for how we prepare girls for the world beyond school. We need to acknowledge that much of that world has been rotten at the core, and that joining the picnic is not the way to a decent life. But it’s not just women who are rethinking their priorities. Young people, both male and female, many sickened by the greed and amorality exhibited by so many in high profile positions, are opting for jobs which they feel are ‘worthwhile’, which make a difference to others’ well-being, and which bring emotional and not merely financial fulfilment. To them, integrity and conscience matter. Quality and balance appeal more than quantity and extremes. And they realise their career paths won’t be linear. They know that they may have to ‘reinvent’ themselves many times in the course of their lives, that they need to develop flexibility, creativity, communication skills and emotional intelligence, and that, for such a life-style, passing exams is no longer sufficient. Perhaps now is the moment when not only our daughters but our sons too will reclaim healthy, happy and productive lives for themselves and their families, switch the emphasis from getting to giving, and create a sea-change in attitudes to work and wealth.

ll schools strive to offer something that makes them stand out in a competitive marketplace. Some focus exclusively on academics, others highlight a specific subject specialism, but at Westbrook Hay we feel that it is the unique school environment that makes us different. Set in 26 acres of beautiful parkland, bordered by a golf course, overlooking the Bourne Valley, one of the things that children always remember from their time here is the wonderful space that they have enjoyed playing in.
and doing all those things that make a childhood much more interesting than one spent on tarmac surrounded by a high fence.
While academic success is obviously important and we are rightly proud of our record of scholarships to Public Schools, the sense that we are in some way guardians of the childhood of our pupils shapes the way in which the school is structured and operates. Our youngest children enjoy the security of the Lower School and its opportunity for outdoor learning and as children move through the school they experience the delights of playing in our grounds, climbing trees, getting muddy

A WONDERFUL CHILDHOOD
An Independent Prep School for boys and girls aged 3-13 years
A broad curriculum, allied to an array of sporting and extracurricular opportunities means that no day of the week is the same for children here, offering them an interesting variety of experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Children here develop their self-confidence and independence in a happy and secure environment and move on to their senior schools as successful individuals. In an age seemingly focused almost exclusively on the academic qualifications that children attain and one that has sought to narrow the range of opportunities that children experience within schools, Westbrook Hay offers an attractive alternative route to a similar destination. In the recent ISI inspection, we were described as an outstanding school; one that produces outstanding academic results, but also has time and space in which children can develop their skills and enjoy their childhood.

A mutually beneficial partnership
a
t a time of coalition government when we have all been able to witness the need for parties to work closely together for the mutual benefit of the country whilst setting aside their differences, it is indeed a salutary time for schools to examine their attitudes to partnerships. Many primary school children across the country have been benefitting from the use of sport or science facilities at their local independent school on a relatively informal basis. At Aldenham we have also sought to examine how we can share our facilities for the benefit of students. Yet those of us who have worked in successful partnerships with maintained schools know that there is an enormous amount to be gained. In Aldenham’s case we have worked with three local primary schools over the past few years, in each case giving their children the
opportunity to undertake a Saturday morning programme including sports, science and art. This has also given our sixth form students the chance to develop leadership skills in running the sessions. Our CCF operates in an incredibly successful partnership with Queens’ School Bushey. We also work at the level of staff development with a number of local maintained schools and many of our staff can testify to the benefit of sharing good practice with our colleagues in the maintained sector. Last year we took the step of incorporating another smaller educational charity, The St Hilda’s Educational Trust, into the Aldenham Foundation. By taking responsibility for St Hilda’s School in Bushey we aim to create a mutually beneficial partnership with a school which has a similar ethos to ours and which we imagine many schools will want to examine in the years ahead.

Independent schools are the perfect breeding ground for our next generation of athletes. These schools often boast superior resources. Dedicated spaces for a wide variety of sports from an Astroturf for hockey to a full sized rugby pitch, a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, athletics arena, Olympic size trampolines and table tennis, to name but a few are undoubtedly hugely beneficial in giving students the opportunity to sample a range of sports and develop a level of proficiency facilitated by having the necessary equipment to hand. The amount of time allocated to sport is also often far greater than in state schools; we all know that practice makes perfect and it is perhaps easier for pupils to find the necessary time to hone their skills, especially at boarding or flexi-boarding schools. Another advantage for pupils in the independent sector is easier access to visiting experts with specific knowledge and specialists in different sports, often at the very top of their chosen sport. Pupils of these specialists develop their sporting skills faster and across a wider range of sports. Over the last couple of years Beechwood Park has been proud to celebrate some impressive achievements by our pupils: 1500m National Prep Schools’ Champion (U13), National Schools Cross Country 2nd place (U11), National Prep Schools’ Champion Indoor Skiing (U11). According to a recent article in the Daily Telegraph, at the Beijing Games in 2008, of the medal winning rowers and sailors, 50 per cent were educated at fee-paying schools, as was every medal winner in the equestrian events. Currently, these sports are unlikely to be generally on offer in the maintained sector, especially given the widespread sale of many state school playing fields.
Inspire a Generation
The Prep school timetable has long featured an excellent variety of Sports. However the Olympics provide us with the motivation to try something new. At Beechwood Park fencing, sailing, table tennis and badminton have all been inspired by the 2012 games and in turn one of our pupils has been motivated to take his badminton a stage further; he has now been selected for the county squad. Canoeing and windsurfing are to follow. What a wonderful opportunity pupils have when they can participate in so many sports. Award schemes further enhance the children’s experience and act as a pathway for developing skill, motivation, self-esteem, leadership qualities and so much more.
he official slogan of the London 2012 Games could not be more apt; what better way to motivate our pupils than through the spirit of the Olympics? Schools can use special events such as the Olympics to inspire pupils in so many ways, from developing their sporting potential to having a greater respect for others, from improving self-discipline to working on leadership skills.
A focused week of events can present an ideal opportunity for pupils to learn and develop these skills. At Beechwood Park all pupils from Reception to Top Form took part in a range of Olympic- inspired activities from White Water Rafting at the official Olympic Slalom Canoe Venue to a week of events which coincided with National Sports Week. The celebration included Opening and Closing ceremonies, swimming events, Aquathlon, BMX racing, Athletics and an Olympic Mascot Dance Competition. The pupils learnt a lot about competition – the winning and the losing, respect for others as they worked together during the week and Team GB’s motto “Better Never Stops” was a great reminder that they should always strive to improve in all areas of daily life, not just sport. Some of the younger children tried to improve their personal best each day in a number of fitness-related activities.
We already know that a significant proportion of our Olympic hopefuls come from an independent school background. Both Ben Ainslie (sailor) and Sir Chris Hoy (cyclist) are public-school educated. Prime Minister, David Cameron, has recently acknowledged that independent schools accounted for more than a third of Britain’s Olympic medal winners despite educating only seven per cent of the nation’s pupils. Why is that the case?
Hosting the London 2012 Games is just one way in which we have given ourselves the opportunity to use sport as a tool for inspiration. People from all walks of life can make use of this chance, but in the independent sector we are in a privileged position of being able to enhance these opportunities to the maximum and develop even further what is already an outstanding sporting programme.

Beechwood Park School
High Aspirations For All In All Beechwood Park is a day, weekly and flexi-boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 – 13 years, located in Markyate, near St Albans, Hertfordshire. The recently refurbished and enlarged Beechwood Park Montessori Nursery close by at Little Cheverells welcomes children from three years. It offers exceptional levels of care by qualified teachers in an idyllic, rural setting with superb facilities. A broad, balanced curriculum is well taught and inspiring, producing an excellent record of exam success and scholarships (23 this year) to a wide range of senior schools. Bursaries are available for entry in Year 7. Facilities for sports and the creative arts are superb. Over 60 children were involved in a memorable, recent production of The Sound of Music. Music provision is second to none. Approximately 300 instrumental/ vocal lessons take place each week, with a number of pupils selected to sing in the National Youth Choir; there are five choirs and 17 ensembles, regular concerts and recitals – in addition to exciting classroom music. The sports facilities are magnificent and the variety of sports means there is something for everyone. Fencing and sailing have recently been added to the long list of options offered in the Sports For All programme. The Sports Trophy Cabinet is bulging after pupils won awards at several Cross Country Championships, at the Prep Schools National Rugby Championships where 56 teams and just under 900 boys participated, and Beechwood’s Aquathletes are currently East of England Junior Schools Aquathlon Champions.
Among the older children flexi and weekly boarding (Monday – Friday) is increasingly popular, it enables boys and girls to experience the lifestyle of a boarder in a smaller, more intimate environment. Children who may have reached the top of their independent junior school but are not quite ready for the full on boarding regime at a large senior boarding school, can benefit from the transition offered by Beechwood. A wide-ranging extra-curricular programme, visiting speakers, and frequent excursions all add to the culturally-rich environment for Beechwood’s pupils. The school, which is well-served by school buses from several locations, benefits from a uniquely beautiful setting in an eighteenth century mansion.

qualities of self-knowledge, teamwork, leadership and resilience. The College regularly wins trophies for Rugby, athletics, basketball and other sports. There is a strong tradition of music, drama and public speaking with regular concerts and drama productions. The school’s strength lies in the combination of high expectations, a culture of mutual respect and care, creating a stimulating happy environment in which boys thrive and learn, building firm foundations for confident socially-skilled pupils. The community is vibrant and the students are the best evidence of what a Columban education can produce. FREEDOM TO SHINE
Helping girls achieve their potential at Abbot’s Hill School Abbot’s Hill School is an independent day school for girls aged 3-16 and boys aged 3-5 situated in seventy acres of parkland on the outskirts of Hemel Hempstead. The School has a strong record of academic success and aims to educate, challenge and develop confident and independent girls. The School’s recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report (January 2012) noted that “small classes, in which pupils feel well known and supported, enable them to fulfil their potential” and “the quality of pupils’ personal development is outstanding” . It is no surprise that our leavers are highly sought after by sixth forms and colleges and many are awarded prestigious Scholarships. The School offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities so that pupils can develop their talents outside of the classroom. This

ith so much media debate around school examination systems and league tables, it can be easy to forget that the focus of a broad, balanced education should be about discovering the joy of learning and developing each individual pupil’s talents and interests. Education is not just about passing exams, but about developing the whole person and nurturing the key learning and life skills required for university and beyond. The pursuit of academic excellence is of course integral to a rounded education which focuses on pupils fulfilling their potential and achieving their very best. Excellence is not, however, solely concerned with achieving top examination grades but also with acquiring intellectual curiosity and the independent learning skills that will enable students to make the very best of all the opportunities that are available to them upon leaving school. It is therefore vital that students are encouraged to stretch themselves academically, to take intellectual risks and to question what they learn. The curriculum at St. Helen’s offers many opportunities for the girls to do this through independent thinking activities which start in our pre-prep department, Little St. Helen’s, with child-initiated learning days and continue throughout the school with, for example, active learning weeks in Junior School and the Year 9 Enquiry project in which girls undertake individual student-led research on a topic of their choice. By giving students control over their learning and the scope to follow their own lines of enquiry, the girls develop a real sense of curiosity and excitement, resulting in an educational environment where students strive to do their very best and to reach their intellectual potential. Central to this fulfilment of individual potential is the need for pupils to enjoy their learning experiences and to discover personal talents and interests, both academically and outside their studies, about which they can be really passionate. It is therefore important that the educational experience available to them is one that offers plenty of opportunities to
get involved in a varied extra-curricular programme and to immerse themselves in activities that enrich the classroom-based curriculum. As pupils progress through their school careers it is also important that they are able to take on more responsibility. Students must be supported in building the confidence to make their own decisions about their academic development and to take increasing responsibility for their learning. They must also be given opportunities to take on positions of responsibility within the community and to develop skills such as leadership and teamwork. At St. Helen’s, we offer girls varied opportunities to contribute to the life of the school. Whilst our most senior students in the Sixth Form are able to become part of the prefect team and to assume responsibility for certain aspects of the running of the school, younger girls are also encouraged to contribute to the community in many different ways such as School Council, the Junior School Head Girl’s team and our Year 9 delegate team who are involved with the running of aspects of Middle School (Years 7 to 9). Opportunities to develop leadership skills are also available to the girls through extra-curricular activities such as the Combined Cadet Force and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, and students are encouraged to get involved with the wider community, using their talents for the benefit of others through initiatives such as Amnesty International and community service. At St. Helen’s, we place great value on the girls’ engagement with the wider life of the school community. Each individual is encouraged to seize the opportunities available to them and to make their own distinctive contribution, in whatever area that might be. Our aim is that the girls leave school as well-rounded individuals with the confidence, integrity and self-reliance to meet the challenges of the adult world. It is this focus on providing an education that is about more than exam passes that produces individuals who will not only achieve their very best academically but will also leave school with the skills to enable them to grasp all the opportunities that life has to offer. Hidden in 23 acres of parkland in Hemel Hempstead, is one of Hertfordshire’s best kept secrets - a small and excellent prep school for boys, Lockers Park. Educating boys since 1874 provides bags of tradition, but a closer examination reveals a school that also promotes academic excellence and ambition in an environment of encouragement and support.
“We believe in nurturing each boy’s individuality. We hold welfare and happiness at the heart of all we do” says Headmaster David Farquharson.

Specifically focussed on educating boys - 140 pupils, some boarding, some day - all participate in sport daily and at the same time, all play musical instruments, do drama and art and benefit from a myriad of clubs. With the ethos and facilities of a boarding school, the Independent Schools Inspectorate noted in November 2011
“Lockers Park provides a very happy learning environment through an excellent wide-ranging curriculum and programme of activities” Academic standards are high with leavers passing onto to top public schools like Harrow and Rugby and excellent independent schools such as St Albans and Merchants Taylors. A high number of Lockers boys gain scholarships. Ultimately it is the boys of whom that the Headmaster and his staff are most proud of. The ISI reports states.
“Pupils of all ages have outstandingly well-developed personal qualities, are friendly and polite, and take an obvious pride both in their own achievements and in those of others.”

Fairley House School

RH Princess Alexandra made a return visit to Fairley House School on Wednesday 30 May when she unveiled a plaque commemorating thirty years of specialist education at the school. Fairley House is London’s leading day school for children with specific learning difficulties and was described last year by the Sunday Times as ‘The Gold Standard’ in dyslexia education. Fairley House was founded by Daphne Hamilton-Fairley in 1982 in memory of her husband Gordon Hamilton-Fairley, a professor of medical oncology, who was sadly killed by an IRA bomb in October 1975. Mrs Hamilton-

Fairley set up Fairley House because she thought there should be a special school for children with dyslexia and dyspraxia where they would thrive, learn and be understood. Princess Alexandra officially opened the school in 1982 and at that time it had 25 pupils. Since then, it has grown to 180 pupils with a Senior Department in Westminster and a Junior Department in Lambeth. During this time, Fairley House has helped thousands of children with Specific Learning Difficulties. Many of the school’s alumni have had excellent grades at GCSE and A-Level and progressed to top universities and now have successful careers in a range of areas. The school was very honoured that Princess Alexandra kindly returned to commemorate our thirty year anniversary and open our new building at 218 Lambeth
Road which adjoins the existing Junior Department. This building has allowed the school to expand and help more children with dyslexia and dyspraxia with new classrooms and a superb hall. Among those attending the event were Ms Rosi Prescott - Deputy Lieutenant for Lambeth, the Principal, Jacqueline Murray and Daphne Hamilton-Fairley founder of Fairley House School. Jacqueline Murray thanked Princess Alexandra for so generously giving up her time to come and see the school and then invited her to sign the visitors’ book and view some photographs from her previous visit. FAIRleY HOUse, described in the sunday Times as ‘The Gold standard’ is london’s leading day school for children with specific learning difficulties. We offer an education almost unique in that educational Psychologists, with speech, language and Occupational Therapists are integrated into the school curriculum. We enjoy a central london location with excellent facilities such as a science laboratory, art room and outdoor play space. Fairley House addresses the difficulties of children between 5 and 14 with dyslexia and dyspraxia. Children’s learning styles have often not been catered for in their previous school, leading to failure and loss of confidence, but Fairley House offers them a ‘level playing field’ where everyone has similar difficulties. Children receive a rich, stimulating educational experience integrated with therapy and specialist teaching. Teaching is multi-sensory and children learn science, spelling, Geography and History through interesting, hands-on activities. There is a staff: pupil ratio of 1: 3.5. The
fAirley house school average stay is two to three years after which children return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude. Our teaching is different. Children with specific learning difficulties benefit from learning in a multi-sensory way. The negative side of dyslexia is so often emphasised but what of the strengths? We bring out pupils’
creativity and the wonderful visual sense that many dyslexics possess if properly nurtured. Our exciting displays of art work and design technology projects are a feature of the school. A full range of sport is available at Fairley House school, including touch rugby, football, netball, hockey and cricket. We use Battersea Park as well as the Queen Mother’s sports hall and swimming pool. We play fixtures against other schools and our after school clubs offer a wide range of activities. At Fairley House our intention is to provide your son or daughter with an educational experience which rivals that of any mainstream independent school. We aim to develop children’s confidence and self-esteem, enabling their talent and enthusiasm to grow and shine. We emphasise the development of the whole child, helping him or her to gain confidence and self-esteem through an encouraging and nurturing ethos. The children have opportunities to develop sound academic and social skills and to become independent. At Fairley House, everyone succeeds.

EDUCATION
Headteachers and Your Child Mr Ben Evans, Headmaster at Edge Grove School
Every parent wants the best education and the happiest childhood for their son or daughter. The job of a Headteacher is to ensure that they receive both and to support them to attain success in their lives. We achieve this by offering a holistic education that encompasses academic excellence as well as rich and varied opportunities for sport, performing arts and extra-curricular activities. This requires a combination of first class facilities, progressive teaching and an environment that makes children feel happy and confident. If a child is made to feel safe, valued and special they will do their best and make good progress. The Headteacher is ultimately the person responsible for ensuring this happens but we are always supported by a body of teachers, nonacademic staff, parents and pupils. The close-knit community spirit at Edge Grove and the dedicated team of teachers makes this all the easier. Ask any Headteacher and most will tell you that their favourite part of the day is when they are interacting with the children – this is the time when you see for yourself how the school is performing and how the children are benefiting. I regularly walk around the school to observe lessons, playtime, games and music. The fast-paced, exciting lessons, the expert coaching on the pitches and courts, the enthusiastic and professional music and choral tuition and the fun playtimes all reassure me that we are getting it right. By offering a variety of lessons and activities there is always something that will appeal to a child and allow them to shine. We’ve been spurred on this summer
by the Olympics but we have always known that by offering a child as many opportunities as possible they will find something that they enjoy and are good at. If they are lucky and dedicated they will excel in their chosen field but if not they will still have had a rich childhood that has prepared them to try things and to know that there are always possibilities. I am sometimes dazzled by the array of activities on offer at Edge Grove - gardening club, Tae Kwando, Samba Band, science club, archery, design and technology, conversational Spanish and the list goes on. I challenge anyone to not find something they will enjoy. I’m even thinking of taking up an activity myself! It is of course crucial that a Headteacher does not become complacent. There will be times when a child seems not to be fulfilling his or her potential. This is when it is essential for the Headteacher to work closely with other members of staff and for the school to work with the family to identify how the child could be better supported. There has to be a strong home-school partnership in which both sides are open, transparent and supportive, ensuring that the best interests of the child are always at the fore. In the 21st century the role of a Headteacher has changed dramatically. We are increasingly required to comply with ever changing health and safety regulations, inspection frameworks and curriculum initiatives. However, the core of the job was, is and will always be to ensure the happiness and development of each child. The pleasure of witnessing a child enjoying their learning is what makes the job so special. SEPTEMBER2012 19

THE PLAY’S THE THING AT THE HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S SCHOOLS
The Haberdashers' Aske's Schools (Elstree), placed 'side by side for excellence', enjoy the best of all worlds in school education. On adjoining sites in 100 plus acres of secure grounds, they are two, single-sex, independent day schools whose pupils benefit greatly from a vast range of social and educational opportunities. The academic reputation of the two schools is well known: they are firmly established in the ‘premier league’ of annually published league tables, a remarkable achievement in itself. The vast majority of Haberdashers’ students go to their first choice university, exceptionally high numbers to Oxford and Cambridge, and some achieve national academic distinction during their time at school.
Advertorial feature The Habs style is to love learning and to enjoy the academic opportunities alongside a huge wealth of extra-curricular activity. In both schools the range of the non-academic curriculum is enormous and the level of participation by pupils very high. Sport, music, theatre, art, service in the community, partnerships with local state schools, debating, public speaking, society meetings, fund-raising initiatives, outward bound and adventurous training activities and every type of leadership and resourcefulness opportunities are all regular features of the termly routine. Drama is an important part of both schools’ academic and extra-curricular programmes. With a strong emphasis on personal creativity and devised work, it offers students an opportunity to build something together as a team. It also allows students to express and develop themselves emotionally in a subject where there are few ‘right ‘ answers. The subject is taught throughout both schools, focusing on all aspects of practical theatre from direction to design, improvisation to dance, sound and lighting to make-up and costume. Both schools have a long tradition of excellence in Drama and school plays have always been a muchanticipated fixture in the school calendar. The Senior, Middle and Junior plays each year provide opportunities for students to mix. This year saw sell out productions of 'Bugsy Malone' and 'The Death of Chatterton' written by Tim Norton, Head of Drama at the Boys' School. The Girls’ School Summer Term ends with a Drama Festival with every form devising a tenminute play, and Sixth Formers run drama clubs for younger students throughout the year. The Boys' School hold a very successful House Drama Competition each year, uncovering some exciting talent. Both drama departments regularly take students to productions in the West End, South Bank and the London Fringe. Students have access to state of the art drama studios, equipped with the very latest video facilities and computer operated sound and lighting equipment. The Bourne Hall is one of only five school stages in the UK to be equipped with a fully operational fly tower, allowing for spectacular effects and scene changes. The school’s theatre technician oversees set construction and prop making and there are comprehensive wardrobe and prop stores on site available for use by students. HEALTH & BEAUTY
Q: WHAT’S YOUR MAKE-UP MANTRA? It’s always been important to me to look good when I’m racing. I even like to have painted nails when I ride. I like the saying, ‘Look good, feel good, go good!’ I definitely think looking good helps you feel more confident so I’ll wear a little mascara, tinted moisturiser and lip balm. I always reapply before getting up on the podium.
Q: WHICH AREAS REALLY SUFFER BECAUSE OF YOUR SPORT? Training with a helmet on every day means my hair is prone to a lot of frizz so I need a haircare regime that helps protect against helmet hair! I love to leave in a hydrating smoothing product after washing like Pantene’s Smooth & Sleek 24h Frizz Fighter to combat any frizziness. Olay Essentials Complete Care SPF30, £10.29
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I love Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream or Neom Organics Moroccan Blush Rose Oil for some indulgent pampering. In my make-up bag I rely on Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF20, By Terry Touche Veloutee highlighting concealer and Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE TO ACCENTUATE FOR A NIGHT OUT? My hair, of course! It’s crammed into a hot helmet pretty much every day so when I’m glamming up, I love to really make my hair stand out.
VICTORIA PENDLETON Track cyclist Victoria Pendleton, 31, is the face of Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek.
JESSICA ENNIS
Heptathlete Jessica Ennis, 26, is the face of Olay Essentials.
Q: DESCRIBE YOUR DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE? I’m training pretty much every day so it’s important for me to keep my skin clean and hydrated. I’ll start off by cleansing my skin in the morning with a smoothing scrub you can use in the shower. Then I’ll always protect my skin with an SPF as a lot of my training is outdoors. The Olay Essentials Complete Care SPF30 is ideal as it’s really light so doesn’t clog my pores and make me sweat more.
Q: DO YOU WEAR MAKE-UP TO TRAIN OR COMPETE? Absolutely. I wear make up every day when I’m training - I always like to look and feel my best. I’ll wear an oil-free foundation then apply black eyeliner and mascara. I’m an eyeliner addict and love dark smoky eyes for a night out.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? Bobbi Brown cosmetics - especially their foundations. I also love MAC for eyeliners and mascaras, and they also do a lovely Lip Conditioner.
Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RECOVER AFTER A HARD TRAINING SESSION? I love a long hot soak in the bath. My favourite product is the Elemis Aching Muscle Super Soak - it smells a bit like Deep Heat! When I have some downtime, I love to go to a spa with friends. I don’t really have massages as I have plenty of painful sports ones during training! 58 SEPTEMBER2012

TOM DALEY
Diver Tom Daley, 18, is ambassador of Adidas Body Care
Q: DO YOU FOLLOW ANY KIND OF SKINCARE REGIME? I use a Dermalogica facial wash and - this is going to sound really stupid - but I always moisturise because chlorine really does dry out your skin. I’m doing say 25 hours a week training and I think about 15 of those are in the pool.
Q: WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR SWIM KIT BAG? A shower gel like Adidas Ice Dive is the key thing, just because I’m constantly in and out of chlorine. It’s quick and easy to rub all over your body and your hair just after you get out the pool. I’ve become immune to the stench of chlorine because I’ve been diving for 10 years now but that, teamed with Ice Dive deodorant, is the best way to make sure I don’t smell of it.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR GROOMING MUST-HAVE? For me, it’s my hair wax - I use TIGI Bed Head. I’ve kind of got to the stage where I can just style it without even looking in the mirror. But when I’m in the pool, it just has to be natural because there’s no waterproof hair wax as yet.
Q: HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR TRAINING OR COMPETING? Shaving foam! But not to shave with. We rub it on our shins and then wash it off, so it gives us better grip when we hold onto our legs for a dive. Max Factor False Lash Effect Gold Edition Mascara, £10.99
Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RECOVER AFTER A HARD TRAINING SESSION? I tend just to chill out. I’ll maybe have a massage from the sports therapist but it will be a deep tissue massage. When diving, you hit the water at about 34 miles an hour, so there’s constantly impact on your shoulders, wrist and back. The massages are kind of painful at the time but you feel much better afterwards. Ice Dive range available Nation wide
KERI-ANNE PAYNE
Swimmer Keri-Anne Payne, 24, is the face of Max Factor & Oral-B
Q: BEING A WATER BABY, HOW DOES THE POOL AFFECT YOUR SKIN? My beauty regime is quite easy. Because I’m a swimmer the chlorine can really make my skin dry so afterwards I shower, exfoliate my face and then moisturise. When I get home from training it’s just a case of applying some more moisturiser and a slick of mascara and then I feel a little bit more girly again.
Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO PAMPER YOURSELF? I love to paint my fingernails and toes when I’m watching TV. Being in the pool all day isn’t very glamorous so it’s nice to treat myself when I’m not training. Dior nail polish in Blue Label is my current favourite but I have to keep my nails short to avoid scratching other swimmers in the pool.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I love using Bliss Lemon + Sage Body Scrub because it smells so fresh and leaves my skin feeling pampered. I reach for Aussie 3 Minute Miracle deep conditioner twice a week to keep my hair soft, shiny and conditioned.
Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MAKE-UP TRICK? I would never go for false lashes but if you wiggle a mascara brush from the root of your lashes up to the top you can really plump your eyelashes. I apply a few coats of Max Factor’s False Lash Effect Gold Edition Mascara for real ‘wow’ impact. When it’s on I’m often surprised they’re my own lashes! SEPTEMBER2012 59

Realising Your Aspirations Why not wake up to Summer and make an appointment with Tom Oliver, personal trainer to the elite? How many of us started the year with good intentions to join a gym, start a fitness regime, take up running or cycling only to find our noble resolutions in tatters a few months later? With every day pressures, it’s never easy to find the right work and life balance which is why it’s often better to get a helping hand. The key to maintaining optimum health and fitness is regular exercise and a good and healthy lifestyle but often we need the motivation to help us achieve our aims. That’s where Tom Oliver, international personal trainer, comes in.
Why hire a personal trainer? There are those who believe personal trainers are only there to accompany them to the gym or when out jogging in the park, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. As a leading personal trainer to highflyers and those in the international business community with little time on their hands, Tom Oliver’s approach is about time efficiency and treating the whole person with a bespoke programme to meet an individual’s needs. Tom adapts his personal training skills to suit the busy lives of his clients, many of whom travel overseas regularly and have punishing work schedules. In creating a solid and uncomplicated training programme which incorporates good diet, exercise and key lifestyle choices, Tom is able to guide a client through his or her whole fitness programme, offering constant motivation, a regular schedule of challenging exercise, and most importantly, the results to show for it.
About Tom’s background Born in Hertfordshire, Tom was educated at Stowe, the leading public school in Buckinghamshire where he won the first ever 62 SEPTEMBER2012
pure sports scholarship. From an early age, he demonstrated a keen interest in many sports, and became accomplished in football, cricket, athletics, cross-country running, squash and rugby. But it was rugby which became his great passion, and on leaving Stowe, he was signed up by Northampton Saints Rugby Club. In time he turned to rugby coaching at the highest level, holding posts with clubs in Chile, Argentina and Australia. Back in the UK, Tom established a personal training service to match the aspirations and exacting demands of a widening portfolio of clients, many of whom were professionals based in London but who needed to travel for their work. As the preferred trainer for clients of Harrods in Knightsbridge and also Edmiston Yachts, the world’s largest charter yacht company, Tom has much experience of juggling programmes to suit the hectic schedules of the international business community and to delivering the highest standards of service and commitment. Tom does not believe in quick fix exercise fads and trends or extreme dieting. His programmes are always fun, varied and challenging and he ensures that in terms of diet, his clients have the right nutritional package to match their physical training needs. His singular approach is based on many elements, the key being to build a strong rapport with the client and to fully understand what it is they most wish to achieve from any training programme. It follows that the setting of short, medium and long term targets is integral to his adopted strategy. Tom believes that exercise should be fun and he ensures that no programme is predictable or dull. He constantly introduces new elements to his client’s individual routines to keep them firmly on their toes!
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Although Tom has a relaxed and cheerful manner, he is a disciplinarian at heart, and maintains that nothing can be achieved over time unless exact and comprehensive monitoring of a client’s progress is applied. In practice, Tom remains totally flexible when it comes to a client’s preferred location for training sessions: a park, gym or workplace are all possibilities. Ideally, however, he maintains that a client’s own home provides an excellent environment, so much so that he regularly assists clients to create their own in-house gyms, and can oversee the design, choice, and installation of equipment. Alternatively, Tom is happy to work alongside architects and designers in the early stages of a home gym project and to advise on equipment specification and layout. Many of Tom’s clients are successful operators in the international business community and he has often travelled to Russia, UAE, and the United States to advise on home or yacht gym installation and personal training programmes. And if that wasn’t enough, Tom also has a good grounding in Spanish, French, Italian and German for the benefit of his European clientele.
Training with Tom Oliver will help a client achieve their key aims: To feel stronger and fitter, and to have more energy, flexibility and agility. In other words, to feel good on both the inside and outside...
So don’t put off the evil hour. Make an appointment with Tom Oliver today. All of us are full of good intentions but often just need someone with the right expertise to encourage and help us put our plans into action! For more information about Tom Oliver and YOUR personal training call +44 (0) 7767 411 577 or email info@tomoliver.co.uk.
Bespoke Personal Training and Skills Coaching for Young People... For many years Tom Oliver Personal Training has provided tailored personal training solutions to some of the worlds most influential figures. As the preferred trainer to exclusive store Harrods, International luxury Concierge Company, Quintessentially and the world’s largest charter yacht fleet, Edmiston Yachts. During that period, Tom and his team have experienced an increasing requirement not only with the principle, but also working with the children. At Tom Oliver Personal Training we carefully devise bespoke training/coaching and multiskills sessions on a one-one, family or small group basis, in order to allow children to progress at a rate which suits them - one that considers their biological maturation age, rather than just their chronological age, develops a complete range of functional movement skills and is flexible enough to encompass the activity preferences of the child and one that avoids the child getting “lost in a crowd” in a class. This could range from basic co-ordination development; fun and functional fitness for an over-weight child or sports specific development
in order to further develop that child’s natural ability. Whilst along the way, we encourage and educate the importance of healthy eating habits in a fun and interactive format. The emphasis at Tom Oliver Personal Training for Children, is not only to positively impact upon the health of the children by delivering physical activity in a varied and stimulating ways, but will also ensure that young people possess the basic skills required to enjoy a broad spectrum of physical activities as they grow older. It fosters very positive attitudes towards physical activity, which will promote a healthy longterm adoption of exercise as a habit.

LARKSWOOD FURNITURE PRESENTS
THE BEST OF BRITISH
Create the home of your dreams, with stunning British-made furniture and free interior design advice, all in the heart of the Bedfordshire countryside.
W
e spend a lot of time in our homes and we all want them to be beautiful. We also want them to be filled with high-quality furniture that looks good, and many of us are increasingly particular about where our furniture is made. However, recent figures indicate that 33% of furniture imports to the UK were from China, to the detriment of British furniture manufacturers. Furniture imported from China can be cheap, but it can also be poorly made, with consumers finding it difficult to get furniture repaired or replaced if it is faulty. The UK however boasts a wealth of superior furniture manufacturers and Bedfordshire’s leading retailer of British-made furniture, Larkswood, is noticing a significant increase in customers seeking out furniture made in Britain. Larkswood has long been a champion of British furniture brands stocking the likes of GPlan, Parker Knoll, Collins & Hayes and Sherborne in its showroom in picturesque Aspley Guise. To celebrate our great British furniture brands in a year in which being British has never been better, Larkswood is hosting a special one-off furniture and interiors event to showcase British furniture and help you get the most out of your home. 72 SEPTEMBER2012
This unique event starts on Friday, 19th October and will run until Monday, 22nd with experts from British manufacturers on hand throughout to help customers make the right choice and tell them more about what goes in to designing and manufacturing furniture in Britain. Plus, Larkswood is also delighted to be welcoming a leading interior designer to the showroom on Saturday, 20th October, who will be advising customers on furniture, colours and accessories to help you create a home straight out of the pages of a magazine. To ensure you get the most out of this fantastic opportunity, bring along a photo of a room you would like to update and let our designer style it for you. Drinks and canapĂŠs will be served throughout the weekend and Larkswood will also be running special one-off discounts as well as fantastic competitions with the opportunity to win pieces from their entire range which includes living, dining and bedroom furniture.

THE OLYMPIC RANGE OF INDOOR AND OUTDOOR POOLS FROM ORIGIN.
metre building, housing a 5.7 x 2.75 metre pool, and plenty of room for changing and gym equipment. All for £120,000. And for a limited time Origin will accept 10% VAT on that - as an incentive for you to be part of the Olympic race!
The outdoor life - Origin style
F
or over thirty years, Origin has been building cutting edge designer indoor pool houses. Over that time, the sophistication has increased dramatically, to keep ahead of the changing demands of the company's customers. Since the earliest days, sales, planning and progress has always been monitored at director level, and the teams of designers and builders have changed little, giving a consistency which has become Origin's benchmark. As an example, meet the all new Olympic range - proving to be one of Origin's great successes. Several buildings are currently underway, and many more are on the drawing board. e range comprises four main models, e Olympiad, Marathon, Arena, and Challenger. To celebrate 2012 and Great Britain's Olympic moment the Origin team put together these pool house packages, inspired by this most historic of games. With an accent on healthy living the designers built in fitness must-haves, such as a well equipped gym, swim jets and an exciting alfresco feel. In the Challenger alone there is all the equipment necessary to train for a triathlon - so it is well within reach of Origin customers to get in some serious training for Rio in 2016! rough the use of cutting edge technology and the finest new materials Origin has managed to bring in the four new packages at record breaking prices - and have included many of the most exciting advances available to today's swimming pool buyer. Temperature controlled pool and surroundings - of course. An exterior finish engineered timber construction. A wide choice of exterior and interior finishes and colours - so your new Olympic Pool House will match in with the colour, surroundings and fabric of your home. e company has even selected ten big canvas styles to maximise the look of your interior, featuring the sort of imagery that will suit this truly life changing installation. You can choose any two of these with the compliments of Origin. e entry style Olympic package is the Arena - an 8 x 4.5 MB BE 7680 SSEEPPTT EE M ER R 22 0 0 11 22
OUTDOOR OLYMPIC TOO… For the past thirty years an important part of Origin's business has become the design and construction of outdoor pools as well as their trademark pool houses. It is hardly surprising, since the company's design and construction teams have made it their business to have a complete understanding of swimming pool technology. Although Origin is recognised primarily as the leading indoor pool house company it would have been a shame if the potential customers who preferred the alfresco freedom of swimming under the sun (or stars) had not been given the opportunity to share the knowhow gleaned from the Origin team’s long established expertise. To further celebrate London 2012 it made sense to develop a range of outdoor pools with the sporting flavour of the Olympic indoor pool range. Origin is introducing these high tech Olympic outdoor installations to complete the picture. Four generous sizes are available - 10 x 4 metres, 10 x 5 metres, 12 x 6 metres and 15 x 6 metres. e packages include a concrete pool chamber, tile patterned pool liner (with an optional mosaic tile), stone copings and pool filtration system. Features include gas, oil or electric pool heating for comfortable swimming outside throughout the year, underwater lighting, bubble cover and roller, and stainless steel steps. An Origin pool is built to be easy to clean, so you can spend more time relaxing, and less with chemicals and a mop. For a further investment it is worth considering one of the many advances in pool covers too. As you may have noticed, Britain’s weather can be unreliable – so the company has developed a deep knowledge of the quickest and easiest ways to protect the water from leaves, and make it safe and secure for younger members of the family. COUNTRY WISE… Barn living is the phrase currently on the lips of the Origin team. ese delightful buildings have a real rural feel, hiding the cutting edge technology of the company's state-of-the-art product. Because they fit so beautifully into the country landscape they are often easier to get through the planning stage, and happily take some of the lovely gentle colours that the designers have to offer. ere is nothing better than swimming in your own garden, outside or under cover. Choosing an Origin design, unique to you, is a reliable and trustworthy way to get exactly the pool you want, from a company with vast experience in this specialist area. Origin's brochures shows a wealth of the company’s finest moments, and are an easy way to understand the different features and strengths of the different models. Ring 01895 823366 or email info@originleisure.com for your brochure pack.

A PASSION FOR INTERIORS... Ask someone what they most remember about their lives, and it most definitely won’t be things. Instead, you will hear wonderful stories about what they have experienced. Central to these very human experiences is the home. It’s where you raise your family. Where you celebrate milestones. Where you live, laugh, relax & entertain. It’s where you feel safe, calm, enveloped, connected. Your home is the heart you wear on your sleeve and the most visible expression of who you are as a person... Gary J. Fernandez is always honoured when clients trust him to help create their homes. Turning houses into homes is his passion and the driving force behind everything his company does. For over two decades Gary, and his team have guided people in their quest for
stylish, functional, fabulous living. “It’s always been paramount to express my client’s desires based on a true collaboration of taste, need & most importantly budget” says Gary He has the vision to see the finished project, taking into account the light, space and type of building, and what each room will be used for. “When I view a building for the first time I don’t see a solid block of space, I see something more organic, with its own lifeforce, ready to create the clients vision into reality” The services include Design only, A Design and Supply Service, right through to a Complete & Total Refurbishment Operation. Whatever Service you choose, the attention to the customers needs
doesn’t stop at the initial stage. From first discussion through to ‘turn-key’ completion Gary is there. “We pride ourselves on our attention to detail, and going the extra mile right through to our after care service. We will not stop until every fine detail is perfect” He said with pride. Gary’s unique approach connects to his clients on a deep and enduring level, with one simple mission: To create a home that reflects them, and how they experience life.

Presenting Murano another Fusion masterpiece
T
hose very talented people at luxury home developer Fusion Residential are putting the finishing touches to their latest masterpiece, Murano, at 389 Cockfosters Road, Hadley Wood. Murano offers six luxury concierge serviced apartments boasting everything from waterproof flat screen TVs in the bathrooms, to prestige kitchens and touch control air conditioning and entertainment systems; no expense has been spared in the pursuit of pure perfection.
walk-in dressing room is full of hand-made cabinets. There is probably enough room to accommodate the entire clothing range at Harrods in its many hangers and drawers. There’s even a couch, which you may well need, as the room is so big.
Winners of the 2011 UK Property Awards, Fusion have used the blueprint from their hugely successful Amara apartment project just along the road for this latest development. The whole property has that unmistakeable Fusion feel from the moment you park in the secure underground car park and are luxuriously elevated to your apartment.
Most of the wall coverings are richly textured and, combined with the brown and tan floor and door finishings, they project a wonderful warmth, enhanced further by the uplighters sunken in the floors.
The penthouse offers the most generous accommodation boasting three double bedrooms, lounge, study, huge kitchen diner, utility room, reception lounge and wide open balcony which commands magnificent views across Hadley Wood Golf Club. One of the Greens is just a short chip and run away at the end of the lawned garden which boasts its own putting green! The balcony is also afforded wonderful privacy by virtue of the canopy of splendid lush green trees to the sides and rear. The master bedroom is enormous. It too, provides balcony access and that incredible panoramic view of uninterrupted countryside. In fact, Murano has spectacular countryside views front and back. Come to think of it, the view in the bathroom is pretty good too. With free-standing oval bath, walk in power shower, exquisitely crafted seamless double basins and the requisite waterproof flat screen, it is nothing short of heavenly. But there is much more within the Murano penthouse. The
88 SEPTEMBER2012
The second two bedrooms are adjoined by another custom created bathroom and they too ooze the Fusion aura of opulence.
The kitchen, which looks over rolling farmland to the front of the property, has been Poggenpohl fitted with a range of Miele integrated appliances including two multifunction ovens, combination microwave, coffee machine, dishwasher and induction hob. And helping you manage marvellous Murano, apart from the Concierge, is Fusion’s trademark “Smart Home” technology delivered via wall inset iPads allowing programming and control of lighting, heating, air-con, sound, vision and security throughout the apartment. The remote access gives you the power to control it from anywhere, even abroad. Murano is clearly going to be another prestige Fusion development. No surprises ...Two apartments were SOLD from plan and the other 3 bedroom apartments together with the Penthouse are about to be marketed... The penthouse is top of the Murano range and offers in the region of £3 million are being invited. Contact Debbie Williams on 01923 216535 to request a brochure or arrange a viewing.
ADVERTORIAL
ST ALBANS: ONCE YOU’VE LIVED HERE, YOU NEVER WANT TO LEAVE
JENNY AND ROBIN BUNN HAVE LIVED IN ST ALBANS FOR MANY YEARS. The couple, who are now both retired, were living in a house just around the corner from Linden Homes’ new King Harry Park development in this historic city. Jenny and Robin love the area and had no intention of moving away, but they realised that life would be much easier if they took the plunge and moved into a new build home. Their house – an older property – needed constant maintenance and the garden was becoming hard work. Because Robin is disabled, the couple decided it was getting too much for them both. Over the past few months, they have been watching progress at the King Harry Park site with great interest. They had always known that the land there would be developed and had kept an eye on the proceedings knowing that they would want to be amongst the first of the new residents. Jenny says it was worth the wait: “We’d always known that we would move here as soon as it was possible. The great thing is that we are still near all the shops; we’re still near all our friends too. But we don’t have the worry of all the gardening and the cost and bother of keeping up the old house.” King Harry Park is a collection of 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes situated on King Harry Lane, a short walk from the picturesque 100 acre Verulamium Park and about a mile from the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans – the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. Jenny says they love the close proximity of the park and really appreciate the fact that their new
home is set back off the road: “We realise that it’s sometimes a bit noisy at the moment because the builders are still working hard on site, but once they’ve finished for the day, it’s really quiet – which is what it will be like when the building is all complete.” It may be quiet and peaceful at King Harry Park, but elsewhere St Albans is buzzing with activity: It’s a city that hosts art festivals and major rock and pop concerts; it boasts renowned theatres, award winning museums and an enviable selection of bars and restaurants. Another major advantage of St Albans is its excellent commuter links. St Albans Abbey station is less than a mile from King Harry Park and connects to Watford and London Euston, whilst St Albans Rail station is less than two miles away and provides links into St Pancras, London Bridge, Luton Airport and Bedford. By road, the M25, M1 and A1 are all easily accessible. St Albans, as Hertfordshire’s oldest town has a long and varied history: It’s been occupied for 2,000 years and by the first century, under the name of Verulamium, it was one of the largest towns in Roman Britain. It seems that once people have lived in St Albans, they never want to leave. This is certainly true for Jenny and Robin Bunn. To find out more about this tranquil and popular part of St Albans, situated opposite the city’s famous Verulamium Park, visit the King Harry Park Marketing Suite and Show Home – it is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Alternatively, please call 0844 417 3980 or visit the Linden Homes website www.lindenhomes.co.uk/khp
