very year, pupils at St George’s Junior School take part in the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal. The idea behind the Shoebox Appeal is simple. Children and adults wrap and pack shoeboxes with a range of gifts and take them to a convenient ‘drop-off point’ to be later taken overseas to reach underprivileged children. Each shoebox is an unconditional gift, given to a child with nothing asked for, or expected in return. With the harvest season slowly drawing to an end, Denbies Wine Estate is celebrating a record vintage of both quality and quantity. Due to particularly favourable weather conditions throughout the year, in excess of 500 tons of grapes were harvested at England’s largest vineyard, 265 acres in the heart of the Surrey Hills. Enjoy skating at a Royal Palace. Put on your ear muffs, gloves and skates, grab a steadying hand and have some festive fun on the ice in glorious Tudor surroundings. The outdoor ice rink offers spectacular views of the red brick Tudor front of King Henry VIII’s magnificent palace, on the banks of the historic River Thames. Book an evening session to see the stunning palace lit up after dark while you skate under the evening stars! Showcasing a beautiful array of baby clothes, interiors and gifts, Baby Boat is a charming new boutique located in the heart of Weybridge. Full of the latest baby wear fashions, christening outfits, hand-picked toys and fairy-tale furniture, you’ll find everything you need to welcome a new baby into the world.

donates over 300 boxes to Shoebox Appeal

very year, pupils at St George’s Junior School take part in the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal.

Pupils are expected to be honest and hardworking whilst showing a genuine concern and compassion for each other and those in need During the last couple of weeks, children at the Junior School have been bringing these boxes into School. A total of 307 boxes have been dispatched and it is hoped that these will bring lots of happiness to the children that are going to receive them. Operation Christmas Child is a campaign that thousands of schools, churches and other organisations from across the UK get involved with during September, October, and

10 decEMber 2014

November. In fact, it is now the UK’s largest children’s Christmas appeal. Marta Rolon, School Chaplain, said of the collection: “Hospitality was one of Constant van Crombrugghe’s values (he was the founder of St George’s Weybridge in the 1800s) and through this act of sharing, each child will be ‘like the sun that fills the sky with light each morning’.” St George’s Junior School, a leading Roman Catholic co-educational day school for boys and girls aged 3 to 11, offers a values-led education. The School’s Mission Statement is reflected in all its activities. Pupils are expected to be honest and hardworking whilst showing a genuine concern and compassion for each other and those in need. The first years of schooling are among the most important of a child’s life. For it is during these formative years, children gain the skills and the confidence to allow them to achieve success in later life. The personalised attention offered by teachers ensures that pupils soon master the skills of reading, writing and mathematics in the early years. By offering a well-rounded curriculum, together with an extensive range of extracurricular activities, they hope to inspire our boys and girls to find a joy in learning that will motivate them throughout their time at school.

New Year’s day at Brooklands

One of the cars which starred in the classic children’s movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be amongst the star vehicles at Brooklands Museum’s New Year’s Day classic meeting – the biggest January 1st classic vehicle event in the country.

T

his is the perfect antidote to the post-Christmas blues and every year, a staggering line-up of classics from all eras and from far flung reaches of the country make their way to the historic site for what has become an annual pilgrimage for some. It is not unheard of to see over 1,000 different classic vehicles ranging from pre-War racers, commercial vans and motorcycles to super cars, hot rods and everything else in between. Porsches nestle up against Bentleys and Minis park up alongside Morris Minors filling every conceivable space at the 32-acre Museum in Weybridge, Surrey. In addition to the vast array of vehicles and Club displays that will line the famous ‘Banking’ of the race track, Paddock and Finishing Straight, you can expect a winter barbeque and the chance to experience a race around the original Brooklands circuit in their state-of-the-art 4D Theatre. If that wasn’t enough, you can also take a supersonic virtual ‘flight’ aboard Concorde or step inside the Motoring Sheds, hangar and aircraft and discover the rich and varied history that Brooklands lays claim to. The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on display at the Museum (one of a number used in the filming) was seen in the opening sequences of the movie, and it has been

painstakingly rebuilt clearly identifying it as the Disney classic. It resides temporarily in the ERA Shed alongside another giant of British automotive history: the Museum’s own 24-litre Napier-Railton. The gates of the 32-acre site in Weybridge, Surrey will open at 9am on January 1st, to welcome in the droves of spectators eager to see what treasures have turned up. All those arriving in a Classic vehicle or any interesting ‘younger’ vehicles, should enter the Museum site via the Campbell Gate off Brooklands Road (KT13 0QN), while extensive parking has been laid on for spectators’ cars in The Heights off Wellington Way.

CLIVE FRANCIS STARS IN

A CHRISTMAS CAROL Adapted and devised by Clive Francis | Music and Sound by Phillip Sheppard

O

12 december 2014

ne of Charles Dickens best-known stories takes centre stage at The Mill Studio, Guildford between Monday 22nd Saturday 27th December and Loseley House on Friday 12th December, as accomplished actor Clive Francis brings his unique one man adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to the venue.

In nearly fifty years as an actor I would say that A Christmas Carol contains the perfect script Inspired by Dickens first reading and performance of A Christmas Carol on December 30th 1853 at Birmingham Town Hall, Clive Francis reenacts this festive masterpiece about the misanthropic Ebenezer Scrooge, while playing every notable character in the story in a moving and entertaining performance. Bringing to life a whole host of Dickensian characters, from the spectral Jacob Marley to the warm and loving 14 decEMber 2014

Bob Cratchit and his son Tiny Tim, not forgetting of course the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, Clive Francis repeats his acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company performance. Clive Francis explained “In nearly fifty years as an actor I would say that A Christmas Carol contains the perfect script; full of emotion and rich with characterization; an absolute joy to perform. “I first encountered Ebenezer Scrooge eighteen years ago when I was invited to play him for the RSC in a huge, lavish production adapted by John Mortimer. It was, as the Sunday Times reported, ‘a success the size of a giant Christmas tree appealing to the grown-up in the children and the child in the grown-ups...’ But you know, once played, never forgotten. Once you have trod the ‘path of jagged flints and stones laid down by Scrooge’s brutal ignorance’, it’s hard to get the old boy out of your head, hence why I decided to adapt the story into a show for myself.” Clive Francis is an accomplished actor whose numerous stage credits include The Importance of Being Earnest, Entertaining Mr Sloane, What the Butler Saw, ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore and Troilus and Cressida. During an illustrious career spanning nearly 50 years, Clive has performed numerous times in London’s West End, for the RSC and at the National Theatre, in additional to his extensive touring credits. His numerous television appearances include: David Copperfield, Entertaining My Sloane, Poldark, The Critic, The Far Pavilions, Yes, Prime Minster, Oedipus at Colonus, The Rear Column, Quartermaine’s Terms, The Piglet Files, Lipstick on Your Collar, The 10%ers, Longitude, Pierrepoint, New Tricks, The Queen. Missing and soon to be released, Mike Leigh’s, Mr Turner. Clive Francis’ began adapting for the stage in 2002 with his one-man show of A Christmas Carol. This was followed with The Lavender Hill Mob, Three Men in a Boat, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Our Man in Havana, The Loved One, Alice the Musical! and most recently The Small Hand, which premiered in Windsor in October 2014. A Christmas Carol is a Christmas show for all ages, and runs at The Mill Studio, Guildford from Monday 22nd to Saturday 27th December. Performances are nightly at 8pm, with a Tuesday, Friday and Saturday matinee at 6.00pm. For tickets and further information contact the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre box office. THE DETAILS Performed In The Great Hall At Loseley House On Friday 12 December. Drinks and nibbles at 6.45.pm, Performance 7.30pm. Festive Celebrations at Denbies Wine Estate

D

enbies Wine Estate is situated on the outskirts of Dorking. The vineyard was planted in 1986, and commands an impressive location overlooking Box Hill. Denbies produces nearly 10% of the total production of English wine. While the business of blending and making wine takes place in the heart of the winery and the first frost of the season has touched the vines, the festive season is gradually spreading through the vineyard. Denbies is open daily to the public and the chateau style winery hosts two restaurants, wine and gift shop, wine tasting experiences, art gallery, exhibition and conference

Denbies is hosting ‘A Taste of New Year’, a sumptuous six course meal with Denbies wine rooms and more recently the independently run Surrey Hills micro-brewery. Village Greens Farm Shop at Denbies opened in 2013 and offers a range of produce from carefully selected local producers. Denbies Late Night Craft Fair is taking place on Monday 15th December from 5 – 8.30pm. Admission is free and guests are invited to enjoy complimentary mulled wine and mince pies on arrival. A wide selection of local crafts from over 25 exhibitors will be available and for even more gift inspiration, Denbies Wine and Gift Shop is stocked to the brim with gift ideas for all the family. Beautiful all year round, the vineyard, with seven miles of public footpath to explore, provides a great day out for all the family. Always a natural habitat for wildlife, flocks of starlings are currently populating the vineyard, birdwatchers and visitors are eagerly awaiting starlings to put on a spectacular display. New for 2014 is the Vineyard Guided Ramble taking

place on Saturday 27th, Sunday 28th, Monday 29th & Tuesday 30th December, from 11am. Denbies Tour guide will host a winter ramble through the vines, a perfect way to help burn off those unwanted Christmas calories! The walk will be followed by mulled wine (or hot chocolate for the children). The cost is £8 per adult / Loyalty Club free of charge / Children free of charge and lasts approximately 60 minutes. For a more intimate and relaxing way to welcome the new year, Denbies is hosting ‘A Taste of New Year’, a sumptuous six course meal with Denbies wine served in the beautiful Gallery Restaurant with our acoustic guitarist, £95 per person / £75 Loyalty Club. Reservations for all events, including Santa’s Cellar Grotto, can be made on-line www.denbies.co.uk Denbies is easily reached by car, junction 4/M25 and direct links to London Waterloo/Victoria and Guildford, with just a 10 minute walk from the station.

THE JEWEL IN ENGLAND’S MUSICAL CROWN

H

idden away in the beautiful Surrey countryside, Woodhouse is a jewel in England’s musical crown. With its reputation thoroughly established for stunning productions of opera and concerts of chamber music. Founder Monika Saunders is celebrating 15 years of Music at Woodhouse. “The New York Times put us up there with Glyndebourne and Garsington, so this anniversary is really something to celebrate,” she says. The idyllic location with its unique Arts and Crafts house set in a stunning garden with its own lake, next to which the operas take place, makes for memorable performances. To mark the special anniversary, Monika Saunders is embarking on a year of festivities, including a special project involving a complete cycle of all the Beethoven string quartets performed by the award winning Hieronymus Quartet. The seventeen quartets will be performed over six concerts, the first one having taken place in November this year and the last one happening in June 2016. “The quartets are magnificent, everything you could ever want to listen to in chamber music,”

Lewisohn from the UK and cellist Vladimir Waltham from France. “They bring so much experience to the group, and have so much fun playing together!” Monika enthuses. The quartet will perform three works in each concert, mixing the early, middle and late quartets at each performance. “This is a fabulous opportunity for us and we are thrilled to be performing these life-affirming works” says cellist Vlad Waltham. The concerts will take place in March, June, and October of 2015 and in March and June 2016. Dates and ticket information can be found at www. woodhousesounds.com. Also planned for this special anniversary year is a New Year Gala Concert of string serenades on the 18th January 3p.m to be played by OrQuesta ,The corontion of Poppea in May and Falstaff by Verdi beginning of September . 2015 is the Anniversary year of Lewis Carroll who lived and died in Guildford. As a tribute Woodhouse will present Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking glass with ballet dancers of the Bolshoi and Alice is a 12 year old stunning very talented ballerina , the same age as Alice in the book!

The quartet is stunning. They are very polished performers and all four members are fabulous communicators says Monika. “To have the whole cycle performed at Woodhouse is very special. Join us for the ride!” The cycle will be performed by the London based Hieronymus Quartet whose members all met at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2011. They immediately won the CAVATINA competition’s first prize and the Audience Prize, and the following year were chosen for a residency at Aldeburgh. In 2014 they were invited to IMS Prussia Cove and earlier this year won one of three prestigious ChamberStudio mentorships at Kings Place in London. “The quartet is stunning. festive exhibition of beautiful handmade porcelain lights by artist Amy Cooper. Amy’s work addresses the fragility and transience of life and the natural world through the transformative properties of light on porcelain. She continues to explore a monochromatic spectrum that is created through the use of textures, variation in thickness and diffusion. The work is slip cast porcelain, each piece individually altered, either through manipulation when plastic or painstakingly masked and sandblasted at bisque. Amy’s porcelain range includes table lamps, lampshades and tea-light holders. Amy Cooper is a Cornwall based designer and maker of

work with glue. I have some loose elements which are also added, I sandblast the work until the areas that are covered by the stencil stand proud. The stencil is then removed, revealing the design. The pieces are fired to 1250 °C and diamond polished before being wired up. For more than 50 years, New Ashgate Gallery has been a window into arts and crafts and provides an unparalleled resource in Farnham, Surrey and beyond. We cultivate the pursuit of excellence in a marketplace environment, with ongoing support to emerging artists, by exhibiting their work and through professional development. New Ashgate Gallery has been a window into arts and crafts and provides an unparalleled resource unique porcelain lighting. Amy says: All my pieces are slipcast and individually altered and decorated, no two are exactly the same. My most recent work is inspired by my more immediate surroundings, the magic of a garden or woodland at twilight and dawn, as well as softly remembered animations from my childhood. I am trying to recreate an atmosphere that delights as well as unsettles a little, which suggests tales and secrets as well as familiarity. Initially the pieces are slipcast, I have a selection of moulds to create different forms. To create my new designs the pieces are bisque fired and sanded to remove any imperfections. After the piece is sanded I apply a stencil I have made specifically for that form from an original drawing, attaching it to the

The Horse at War: 1914-1918 The Lightbox gallery and museum, 25 November 2014 – 1 March 2015

T

he Lightbox gallery and museum in Woking, Surrey, will commemorate the centenary of World War One with the exhibition ‘The Horse at War: 1914 – 1918’ (25 November 2014 – 1 March 2015). Exploring the role of the horse in World War One, the exhibition will compare the glorified image of Officers and their chargers at War with the piteous desolation of these animals as beasts of burden when faced with gunfire and trench warfare. The Lightbox is delighted to announce that ‘Joey’, the original West End horse puppet from the National Theatre’s acclaimed stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel ‘War Horse’, will feature in the exhibition. The puppet, designed by Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones of Handspring Puppet Company, has kindly been loaned to The Lightbox by the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Theatre and Performance Collections. This will

48 decEMber 2014

be the first time that ‘Joey’ will have been shown in an exhibition outside of London. Three mannequin puppeteers, in costumes designed by Illustrator and Theatre Designer Rae Smith, who won Tony and Olivier Awards for her scenic designs and drawings for the National Theatre’s production of ‘War Horse’, will be displayed with Joey. Drawings by Rae Smith, which were created for sensational projections and animations for the National Theatres Live performance of ‘War Horse’, will also feature in the exhibition. Rae Smith’s ‘The War Horse Panorama’, a 24 metre panoramic which tells the entire story of ‘War Horse’, will also be on show. Michael Morpurgo’s author’s note for ‘War Horse’ states that his inspiration for the character Captain Nicholls came from an old oil painting with an inscription of the name ‘Joey’. Rae Smith recreated the character’s sketchbook and these drawings became the 26 metre long scenic backdrop

for the performance of ‘War Horse’. Examples of works by World War One artists, similar to that of the painting that inspired Morpurgo’s novel, will also be included in the exhibition. Now celebrating its seventh year on the London stage, Nick Stafford’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s book continues to play to sell-out houses, and has been seen by over 5 million people worldwide. ‘War Horse’ tells the story of a young boy Albert, and his beloved horse Joey, who has been requisitioned by the army to fight in World War One. Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in No Man’s Land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. Chris Harper, Producer of ‘War Horse’, said “We are delighted that Joey, the equine star of War Horse will have a new temporary home at The Lightbox in Woking as part of this important exhibition about horses in World War One. War Horse has had an incredible journey from its beginnings at the National Theatre in 2007 and with its continued run in the West End, and in this poignant year that marks the World War One centenary, we hope that Joey’s appearance at the exhibition, will help to inform this generation about the important contribution horses made 100 years ago.” Curator of the exhibition, Michael Regan, has developed a unique layout which will depict the story of the horse at war through many different facets, combining contemporary elements with original works from artists present in the battlefield. The exhibition will also investigate the effects that losing thousands of horses to the war effort had on the local Surrey farming communities and other businesses that relied on horses for transport.

THE HIGHLIGHTS Joey, the original West End puppet from the National Theatre’s award-winning stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel ‘War Horse’. The Handspring Puppet Company donated Joey to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2013, and will be on display at The Lightbox from 25 November 2014 until 1 March 2015. The West End Production of ‘War Horse’ continues at the New London Theatre, currently booking until 14 February 2015. It is also currently on a tour of the UK and Ireland. Forward the Guns! 1917, Lucy Kemp-Welch, Tate. This picture portrays a charge of horses pulling artillery. According to the artists’ obituary in ‘The Times’, Kemp-Welch had sat with her easel on Salisbury Plain while eight batteries of horse artillery were driven towards her so that she could sketch the general outline of their movement. The artist’s original sketches will also be displayed alongside the painting.

PicoSure Tattoo Removal

Trueskin takes huge pride in its reputation as a Medispa of ‘Firsts.’ It was the first and continues to be the largest provider of revolutionary laser, Picosure, in the UK. Trueskin introduced PicoSure earlier this year and has seen huge growth in people opting for the treatment, over and above other tattoo removal methods, such as older Q-switched lasers. With over 20% of the UK now regretting a tattoo, clients are choosing PicoSure due to the time saving and convenience it offers, as well as its ability to treat recalcitrant tattoos that have stopped responding to conventional lasers. PicoSure lasers are able to remove a tattoo up to four times faster than other lasers, and with the EasyPico monthly price plan offered to Trueskin customers, clients are now able to save significant time and cost when having their tattoo removed compared to any other laser tattoo removal method. 56 decEMber 2014

Laser hair removal is the best method for gaining the smooth hair-free skin you’ve always wanted. Trueskin Mediaspa uses the state of the art, award winning Cynosure Lasers which have the ability to treat all skin types including darker and Asian skin tones; something which is not possible with other types of lasers. With the range of spot sizes Trueskin offers; large areas such as legs, back and chests can be treated effectively as well as smaller areas such as bikini line, beard, sideburns, upper lip and full facial hair removal.

Last month the PicoSure laser by Cynosure was awarded with the Best Anti-Ageing treatment title at the MyFaceMyBody Awards. Being one of only a select few clinics to offer this revolutionary treatment, Trueskin has seen firsthand how the popularity of the PicoSure Skin Revitalisation and Wrinkle reduction treatments have soared in recent months. The PicoSure laser works by stimulating the collagen and elastin production in the skin resulting in dramatic reduction in the appearance of wrinkles. Areas such as around the eyes, crow’s feet, wrinkles around the mouth, frown lines, lipstick lines, smoker’s lines and facial wrinkles can all be effectively targeted. As well as this, other areas of the body such as hands, arms décolletage can also be treated. all bases covered A key component of the ‘no make-up’ make-up trend is a flawless complexion, and right on time, a ton of the big beauty brands have unveiled their latest foundation formulations. Whether you’re looking for age-defying properties, a fresh-faced glow or complete coverage, these are the best of the new bases. By Katie Wright, Press Association

GLOW-GETTERS

Promising to give you the ravishing radiance of one of their billboard models, Burberry’s Fresh Glow Foundation uses ‘mirror-flat intense reflection pearls’ to lend your complexion a burst of luminosity. That doesn’t mean you’ll be instantly transformed into Cara Delevingne on application (if only), but it does effectively reduce the appearance of pores and give a subtle sheen without camouflaging skin texture completely. Similarly, Japonesque Luminous Foundation is a liquid formula that is less about coverage and more about that elusive angelic glow. It definitely delivers on the latter, but you might need to add concealer on top to banish more noticeable blemishes. Burberry Fresh Glow Foundation SPF15, £35 (www.burberry.com). Japonesque Luminous Foundation, £24, John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com)

AGE-DEFIERS

Using the same principles as the brand’s popular Perfectionist firming serum, Estee Lauder Perfectionist Youth-Infusing Makeup is oil-free, but the silky liquid still feels really hydrating, so it suits dry skin in particular. And with a whopping 22 shades on offer (more than any other foundation we tested), it’s easy to find the perfect match. A super high-tech base that comes in a pot with a little spatula, Sensai Cellular Performance Cream Foundation looks and feels more like a face cream. Also ideal for dry skin, it seals in moisture by creating a membrane on the 58 decEMber 2014

SUPER POWDERS

Challenging the notion that powder should come AFTER your base, Bobbi Brown Skin Weightless Powder Foundation is a lot creamier than it looks, but still effectively mattifies any oily patches, and comes in a handy compact. A new addition to the Vitalumiere family, Chanel Vitalumiere Loose Powder Foundation provides the kind

Tried & tested Our testers turn their gaze on shimmer eyeshadows: Kiko Milano Long Lasting Stick Eyeshadow (in Golden Beige) This eyeshadow is perfect for giving eyes a subtle, shimmery lift that stays put all day or night. With its pencil applicator, it’s easy to apply and goes on evenly, while the soft golden colour will go with everything in your wardrobe. What’s not to love? 4/5 £6.90 (www.kikocosmetics.co.uk)

Clinique All About Shadow Single (in Sugar Cane) Even though it’s a powder, this eyeshadow is so dense it feels almost like a cream. It spreads easily and really clings to my eyelids, giving a lovely even wash of white that lasts all day and doesn’t crease. £16 (www.clinique.co.uk)

This eyeshadow looks ivory-coloured, but it’s actually a very finelymilled glitter powder. At first, I overloaded my lids a bit, but once I got the dosage right, I really liked the subtle sparkly effect; it really brightened my eyes. £18, (www.narscosmetics.co.uk)

COMPLEXION CORRECTORS

Designed to cover very noticeable marks, like acne scars, spots and dark circles, Vichy Dermablend Fluid Corrective Foundation is a heavyweight base enriched with Vichy Thermal Spa Water. The long-lasting matte finish formula also contains SPF35, and with Bronze the darkest of five shades, it’s better suited to paler skin tones. Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Foundation offers a similar proposition, but with a dozen colours to choose from. Using ‘NASAinspired technology’, it conceals blemishes and redness almost as well as the brand’s iconic Touche Eclat pen, but the foundation doesn’t feel anywhere near as heavy. Tried & tested

Do DIY beauty products really work? Keeley Bolger mixes up a home-made nourishing blueberry lotion. Ingredients:

A handful of blueberries, 1tbsp of almond oil, 3tbsp of almond milk, 1tbsp of orange flower water.

Method:

Blend and mix all the ingredients until smooth. Strain the lotion so there’s no pulp from the blueberries, and pour into a bottle. Shake well before use, as it may naturally separate.

The verdict:

“This lotion was easy and quick to make in the blender but unless you have a really fine sieve, it’s hard to get rid of all the blueberry skin. It smelt nice but was very runny so I had to use cotton wool to apply it, making it feel more like a cleanser than a moisturiser. It’s a nice idea and cheap once you have the ingredients, but I didn’t feel like it offered enough protection for my skin over winter to want

“The one thing that is very apparent is that the general public get very little advice about buying the correct bed”

The barn showroom where specialist advice is key to a good night’s sleep

T

he historic converted barn known as ‘The Bed Centre’ may be a familiar landmark for regulars passing down the A281 through the village of Bramley, but the extensive range (and, more importantly knowledgeable advice) that lies within may come a surprise to most. This family business has more than 75 years’ experience helping customers get that perfect nights sleep. Owner Gary Ewmett takes pride in selling long lasting solid timber bedsteads, in oak, ash, mahogany and cherry wood. He says that the thing that sets the Bed Centre apart from others is the personal service it provides. “The one thing that is very apparent is that the general public get very little advice about buying the correct bed.

We spend time talking about the individual requirements our customers may have to make sure they purchase the right bed.” Clearly that extra bit of effort has paid off. The majority of the business is from recommendations from previous customers. The Bed Centre has built up a solid client base and offers a free delivery service and is also able to dispose of your old bed for you, which go to recycling. It specialises in individual pocketsprung, memory foam and coil sprung beds and mattresses and also has a selection of children’s beds and bedroom furniture. Sofa beds, mattresses and pillows are also available. “While the majority of the younger customers prefer bedsteads” Gary says, “there are many customers who still prefer the classic divans beds. But whichever bed you opt for, the golden rule is the same - take your time over trying the mattresses before making your choice”.

Ensuring your glass extension complies with the Building Regulations

When it comes to adding a conservatory or orangery to a dwelling or changing a glass roof for a solid one, many UK home owners have been badly advised by misinformed neighbours, double glazing suppliers and double glazing salesmen looking for a quick sale without advising you of the consequences

S

ome glass extensions do need both planning permission and Building Regulatory Approval, whilst some need full planning permission only, or to apply for and comply with the Building Regulations. When it comes to replacing a translucent conservatory roof with a solid roof, many conservatory owners don’t realise that they can only do so by first obtaining Building Regulatory Approval. It may be helpful to first know what the “official” definition of a conservatory or glass extension is. Conservatories, porches and other such glass extensions share a common description with Regulation 9(1), 21(4) stating to meet the exemption status in Schedule 2 Class 7 of the Building Regulations. • They must be at ground level and have a floor area less than 30 square metres. • They must be thermally separated from the dwelling by walls, windows or doors which meet the energy efficiency requirements. • The dwelling’s heating system must not be extended into the conservatory, orangery or porch. Local Authority Building Control guidance is that to be considered exempt from Building Regulations the conservatory must also :

76 NOVEMber 2014

• Have at least 50% of its external wall area formed from translucent materials (not, however including walls within one metre of a boundary with neighbours) • Have at least 75% of its roof area formed from translucent materials • Heating should either be completely independent of the dwelling or be provided with effective controls to operate and isolate the heating from the dwelling A conservatory or any other type of glass extension must have a significant proportion of the roof and walls glazed to be considered exempt from having to apply and comply with the England and Wales Building Regulations. Consequently by adding a solid rood the structure then becomes a de facto extension with all that entails, and Building Regulations Application needs to be made. In addition planning permission may be needed. Your local Building Control Officer may require the new structure to have roof vents, and/or trickle vents retrospectively fitted to windows, or other changes made to the existing structure. There will certainly need to be adequate ventilation. Even if the actual new solid roof system has building regulation approval as a product that will comply, the remainder of each structure may also need to comply, and may need “Change of Use”

planning permission as the structure is changing from a conservatory to an extension. In some cases property owners may unwittingly be exceeding any intact Permitted Development Rights if the floor area of the conservatory is greater than PD rights allow. If since the conservatory was built the Permitted Development Rights have been withdrawn by the local authority, then it will not be possible to add a solid roof without first obtaining planning permission. The existing roof will either be glazed or polycarbonate and most typically here in the UK will have UPVC window and doors. If the roof is glazed, it is likely the vertical frames will have been designed to carry

weight composite solid roof is only likely to add an additional 0.5kN/m. The existing foundations should have trial holes excavated to ensure they are adequate to support the new loading. In most cases a 150mm thick concrete strip foundation or reinforced concrete slab which bears onto original ground will be adequate. Foundations passing over drains, close to tree roots or on filled ground may require further consideration. According to the Local Authorities Building Control guidance on adding a solid roof, “your local authority building control team is likely to ensure that the roof and supporting structure fully complies with the Building Regulations.”

If there is no reinforcement new window frames may be needed to support the weight of the roof the roof load. In the case of a polycarbonate roof, the vertical frames may only have sufficient reinforcement to carry that particular load. To assess the suitability of the supporting framework it may be necessary to verify the type and extent of reinforcement on site by either drilling pilot holes or testing with a magnet to test for the incorporation of a steel core. If there is no reinforcement new window frames may be needed to support the weight of the roof, or additional reinforcement installed abutting the existing frames. The typical loading of an existing glazed conservatory roof (not polycarbonate) is less than 10kN/m. A light-

So before ordering a solid roof for an existing conservatory or a new structure that has a solid roof, make sure the necessary planning permission and Building Regulatory Approval is obtained before money changes hands and work starts.
