any of golf ’s global superstars will return to Wentworth Club, Surrey this May to compete at the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. World number one and four-time Major Champion Rory McIlroy will be spearheading a title defence against some of the biggest names on the European Tour. Can you imagine just what it would have been like to attend a typical race day at Brooklands in the 1920s or ‘30s? There would have been exotic racing cars from all over the world driven by their daring owners in competitions to win trophies; spectators would glance through their programmes dressed in their finest garb anticipating all the action on the track and the noise and hullabaloo of the engines, the crowds and the commentators over the public address system would provide the most exciting atmosphere for miles around. Royal Ascot is arguably the world’s most famous race meeting. First organised in 1711 at the behest of Queen Anne, and attended by British Monarchs ever since, each day of Royal Ascot traditionally begins with the Royal Procession in which The Queen along with her family and guests parade in front of the packed grandstands in their horse-drawn carriages. The Investec Derby, Britain’s richest horse race is the most prestigious of the country’s five Classics and often referred to as the “Blue Riband” of the turf. The name “Derby” has become synonymous with great races all over the world, and as such has been borrowed many times, notably by the Kentucky Derby.

LESSONS
John Smith, owner of The Surrey Sporting Club explains ”We always do group lessons (4-5 people maximum) because these take the pressure off the individual and make things more enjoyable. One hears everything said several times and criticisms aren’t taken personally! Unlike other clubs and shooting grounds, we only ever give beginners one lesson, it is all one needs, but the lesson lasts for 2-2 ½ hours instead of 1 hour. After this you get tips from time to time, as necessary, no charge. The lesson costs £70 and includes gun hire and 60 cartridges, there are no extras, even the tea / coffee are free. Lessons start at about 10.15am on the Sundays that the club meets. Other prices are on our website. We have 20 and 12 bores as required. We have a Section 11 exemption as a Police approved range so can hire guns and sell ammunition for use on the ground. You do not need a licence. We ask for immediate payment in full and confirm the lesson only on receipt of the payment, this is because our lessons are usually fully booked and if you don’t turn up you will be denying someone else the opportunity; we also have to pay the instructor whether you turn up or not! After the lesson, and if you like us, you can join the club or shoot as a visitor, it pays to join if you plan to shoot regularly, but it’s your choice.” THE DETAILS 01483 283996 www.surreysportingclub.co.uk

new exhibition Sculptor of monumental horses heads, commanding prestigious sites around the world has a new exhibition at Sladmore Contemporary. An inside look at the artist’s hilltop Surrey studio and workshop, with new work in progress
N
ic Fiddian-Green is completing a series of new sculptures for this solo show, which will include Arab stallions and horses inspired by the art of the Chinese Han and Tang dynasties. This makes a departure from the ancient Greek ideal for Nic Fiddian-Green. When he first saw the great Horse of Selene, one of the Elgin Marbles at the British Museum, it was like a lightning flash. ‘A lesson in balance and harmony and proportion. For the past 30 years I’ve focused on capturing the beauty of a horse’s head, though I will never surpass the Parthenon Horse of Selene, who drew the chariot of the Moon Goddess across the sky’. Last year his art took a new direction. Swire Properties (one of the most important companies in the Far East) commissioned a Fiddian-Green sculpture for the garden of their headquarters in Hong Kong, a 16 foot tall bronze ‘Horse at Water’ which rests on the surface of a water pool. The Chinese horse includes a new element: cracks on the bronze surface, which suggest, says Nic, ‘a fractured form, emphasising time and history.’ This was the first sculpture by Nic FiddianGreen to be permanently installed in Hong Kong. His colossal horses’ heads make a powerful impact wherever they stand: on a Surrey hill near his family house, Ascot and Goodwood racecourses, in an Italian
castle courtyard, Glyndebourne Opera House, public sites in Australia and North America. The best known sculpture by Nic Fiddian-Green remains his landmark ‘Still Water’ at Marble Arch. There will be a faithful recreation of Nic FiddianGreen’s Surrey hilltop studio, near Bramley, at the Sladmore show, giving visitors an inside view of the artist’s working environment. He will answer visitors’ questions while demonstrating his modelling and metal working skills. Nic and his family moved to Surrey in the early 90s, have embraced country life, and take their horses out for miles on Saturday mornings. Nic, his wife Henrietta, and their four children ride from their home to Hascombe across the hills. Nic finds perfect peace on the steps of his shepherds’s hut at Wintershall Lake, where he likes to fish. He arrives at his east facing studio at 5 am, inspired by his favourite view: ‘I can see the sun rising across the fields and over the wood, looking down over an undisturbed valley.’ Nic’s noble horses’ heads have attracted a long list of distinguished collectors: movie stars, Middle Eastern princes, business giants, best selling writers, landowning grandees, from Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe to the Countess of Derby and Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani of Qatar.

he artwork of Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) will take centre stage in a unique exhibition at The Lightbox gallery and museum which will showcase the colourful highlights of international Pop art. From 25 July – 1 November 2015 ‘Warhol and the World of Pop Art’ will bring together some of the finest examples of both fine and applied Pop art pieces from America and mainland Europe. The exhibition will have a section dedicated to Warhol which will sit alongside other significant American Pop artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist and Jasper Johns. From Europe notable works by ‘new realist’ artists will include Claude Gille, Erró and Nikki de Saint Phalle.
just as a form of fine art, but across all applied mediums such as packaging, pop music, fashion and furniture. One of the focal points of the exhibition will be the highly-recognisable series of ten multi-coloured screen print portraits of Marilyn Monroe, created by Andy Warhol in 1967. To complement this, earlier Warhol pieces, some never before exhibited in Britain, will be on show such as textile designs, a drawing entitled ‘Shoe’ and two dresses from the late 1950s. Examples of later rare applied artworks by Warhol will also feature in the exhibition such as a ‘Campbell’s Soup Can’ paper tote bag (1966) and an LP record sleeve for the Velvet Underground featuring the famous Pop art banana motif (1967). Significant works by other American Pop artists will include prints and applied pieces by Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) such as ‘Crak! Now Mes Petits...Pour La France’ (1964) and ‘Crying Woman’ (1963). An iconic ‘Mickey Mouse’ piece by Claus Oldenburg will feature along with ‘Silo’, an oil on canvas by James Rosenquist (b. 1933), and a detailed graphite on paper drawing ‘Three Flags’ by Jasper Johns (b. 1930). European Pop art, referred to in France as ‘new realism’, will include a mixed media piece by Claude Gilli (b. 1938), collages by Erró (b. 1932), and a brightly-coloured sculpture ‘Nana Acrobat’ by Nikki de Saint Phalle (1930 – 2002). Applied art high points will include Pop art ‘disposable’ paper dresses by Harry Gordon which will be showcased on a specially installed runway alongside the other fashion pieces. Outside the gallery will be a collection of fun Pop ephemera from the 1960s such as comic books, American pop and rock posters and iconic imagery such as the Coca-Cola bottle – also a favourite of Warhol.

The Pop Art Movement
Pop art emerged as a movement in the late 1950s as a response to the post-war boom in popular culture which led in turn to the rise of advertising, mass production, pop music and Hollywood movies. Young artists felt at that time that traditional art techniques and subjects did not reflect the commercialised new world in which they lived and so they began to take influence from the imagery around them. Warhol was at the forefront of this movement, working originally in the 1950s as a commercial illustrator, he used this inspiration and experience to make the transition to successful Pop artist. By the mid-1960s Warhol’s work was highly sought after and the American media had christened him the ‘Pope of Pop’.

Dyeing to go blonde? When Kim Kardashian West unveiled her dramatic new do at Paris Fashion Week in March, brunettes the world over wondered: just how did she get her dark locks so light? By Katie Wright, Press Association DON’T DYE THIS AT HOME?
So is Kim’s black-to-blonde bleach job achievable with an off-the-shelf dye? “I would not recommend this as DIY, I have seen too many disasters,” says Tracy Hayes, global head of technical training for Fudge Professional. “Always have this process done professionally, to keep your hair in the best possible shape.” If you have warm brown or ginger hair, you should avoid the peroxide too - unless

A
nd with Lily Allen and Carol Vorderman recently taking the peroxide plunge too, salons have seen a spike in calls from would-be blondes. “We’ve already had so many calls from people who are desperate to copy Kim’s look, particularly darker brunettes who are looking for a complete colour overhaul, rather than blondes who just want to go a few shades lighter,” says Marc Trinder, art team director at Charles Worthington Salons. “Kim seems to have inspired a newfound colour confidence in many women.” But despite regular root touch-ups (all captured on Instagram, of course), Kim reverted back to her usual ebony shade within three weeks. Does that mean such high-maintenance hair is unsustainable, even for a millionaire who has her own ‘glam squad’ on hand? “The lightening process from very dark to very light blonde is heavy and strenuous on the hair,” warns Claire Bonney, senior technician at Radio Hair Salon. “It involves bleaching the hair, pushing it as light as it will go, possibly a double application, and of course, a much-needed toner to knock out any brassy tones.”

you want to end up with orange locks. “The red pigment is really hard to lift,” says Nice’n Easy UK colour advisor Jonathan Long, but medium to dark brown hair can be lightened: “I would always recommend shifting a shade within one to three shades of your current hair colour.” If you are tempted by the DIY route, then the greasier your hair is, the better, as the oils will help protect your scalp. Follow with a toner to avoid a brassy finish: “Lightened hair tends to pick up pollutants that can make the hair appear yellow in colour. In order to neutralise these tones, I would recommend using LIVE Toner Mousse Icy Platinum M01,” advises Sian Hickson, Schwarzkopf Brand Manager. Aftercare is crucial too. “Use shampoos and conditioners specifically for either colour-treated hair or dry and damaged hair, and use a treatment once or twice a week,” says Hickson. “Towel dry the hair before applying conditioner, as this will ensure that the conditioner penetrates further into the hair, and avoid using excessive heat on the hair, be it straighteners, wands or tongs.”

TIME TO GO PRO?
So your natural hair hue is too dark for at-home application, but what next? There’s still a lot to consider before you book in for your big blonde makeover. “This is a huge job and will need the eye and attention of a colour specialist. Getting an even result on previously coloured hair can be difficult, depending on the history of the hair,” says Claire Bonney. It’s not cheap, either. “I would say between £200 and £300 for the initial application, and £120 and £170 for the root application, depending on the salon - some high-end salons will be more expensive than this,” Tracy Hayes estimates, and you’re looking at touch-ups every six to eight weeks. Looking after your locks post-peroxide is even more important when it’s a pro job. “The process is chemically drying on the hair, so using professional products at home is imperative, as you must feed the hair the protein and moisture it needs. Regular haircuts are important too,” Bonney advises. With that level of upkeep, no wonder Kim didn’t keep her new colour for long. But that’s not to say you can’t realise your own blonde ambition, Hayes says, “as long as you are prepared to spend the time and money to keep it looking good.”

urly hair is a real mixed blessing. Those who don’t have it, want it, and those who do, hate it. Growing up with curls was a nightmare - until I discovered products to tame them, but eventually my hair stopped responding to them, so I’m always on a mission to find ‘the one’ miracle product to fight the frizz. Could Boucleme be the answer? “Founded by Michele Scott-Lynch - who once constantly straightened her unruly hair, until she found the confidence to ‘go curly’ at 30 - the threestage range is paraben and sulphate-free and uses only natural ingredients, such as coconut and argan oil, to help moisturise hair. The cleanser is not meant
to lather up, and the silky conditioner is designed to be left in on thicker hair. The final product is a gel, which initially dries crisp, but when you gently scrunch your hair, it softens into beautifully defined curls. This is the curly revolution!”

PYT HOUSE
This is a 4-acre garden designer’s garden which is, astonishingly, only eight years old. There are wonderful plants in this garden, but the use of structural hedges to divide up the garden into different areas with views and vistas, both across the garden and also into the landscape, works fabulously. The tone is set by the space immediately outside the house, where pleached limes are underplanted with yew, and the garden opens immediately into different themes spaces; an avenue of whitebeam underplanted with early flowering perennials; a circular pool surrounded by a holly hedge, and a perennial and grass border leading down toward the new pond at the far end of the garden. Entrance is £5.00 per adult and includes the gardens. Children under 16 free. Homemade refreshments available. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the fair or garden.

The kitchen garden remains productive and there are extensive walks in the main gardens and adjacent parkland and woods to enjoy. Work continues to bring the neglected areas back into use and to develop new ideas within the traditional structure. In recent years the rose garden has been redeveloped, along with updating areas such as the ‘Long Walk’ herbaceous borders. Entrance is £4.00 per adult and includes the gardens. Children under 16 Free. Refreshments available. Well-controlled dogs on short leads are allowed in the fair and gardens.

GET IT RIGHT Why it is important to specify the right bi-folding doors configuration
7 4 M AY 2 0 1 5
I
f you are thinking about replacement bi-folding and sliding doors for an existing “opening” to replace French doors, sliding patio doors or casement windows, or indeed looking at fitting folding and sliding doors into an extension - getting the right configuration first time round is vital to ensure their longterm practical operation. When it comes to “Bi-Fold” doors the clue is in the name, yet, despite this, many double glazing customers still get into hot water when having bi-folding doors fitted, as they did not take the time to think through the ramifications of certain configurations. The key thing with bi-folding doors is to remember that each “pair” of bi-folds, opens and closes in tandem, so cannot operate as individual sections, they are in-effect one. As these two folding door sections are inextricably linked, no pair of bi-folding doors can therefore accommodate a normal door handle, nor can one of these two sections operate as a travel door without the other opening or closing at the same time. Consequently, if you want to have a single travel door as part of your bi-folding door configuration, you need to have an odd number of sections, namely 3, 5, 7 or 9 panes etc. Only high quality bi-folding doors will last regular use, as they are highly technical pieces of kit (and yes, they are consequently expensive!), so it is vital when purchasing double glazed bi-folding doors, to invest wisely in robust enough products that will still be operational in 10 years’ time when the guarantee runs out and the homeowner is left to foot the bills for all the call-out charges, parts and labour to get the folding doors operational and secure again. To avoid such issues, don’t buy a cheap set of folding and sliding doors, or indeed bi-folding doors without a cast iron warranty from a firm you are 100% certain will be around to service the guarantee. It is worth asking yourself why some established UK independent double glazing manufacturers and installers who supply and fit aluminium and UPVC front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors in both aluminium and UPVC, refuse to touch UPVC bi-folding doors. Could it be they are not fit for purpose? As a material, UPVC flexes, so is not the ideal product to use for bi-folding doors that need to operate rigidly, as one, and not be in any danger of popping out of alignment. High quality double glazed aluminium bi-folding doors not only offer better security than plastic dual folding doors, but tend to have slimmer profiles, so are aesthetically more pleasing and deliver more glass and daylight. Yes UPVC folding doors are much cheaper to buy, but it is up to you if you want to take on the risks involved, and are prepared to have less glass and light in the room in question. The optimum number of sections for a bi-folding door for each particular property is really determined by the size of the aperture and how often these folding and sliding double glazed doors will be used. If you are looking for all the sections to slide in one direction, then a 3, 5, 7 or 9 section door will deliver a travel door with a normal door handle. The problem with 2, 4, 6 or 8 section bi-folds doors which all flow in one direction is they cannot have a normal door handle, so are unable to fold up together properly, and therefore are more limited in their operation. Make sure that the doors you have fitted, come with “D”
handles to assist with the opening and closing of the doors, as dragging them from one end can pull and stretch the gasket, leading to unnecessary time consuming service calls. All bi-folding doors systems, whether made of aluminium, steel, UPVC or wood have their limitations in terms of both overall height and overall width, and indeed maximum and minimum achievable pane section sizes. So before creating an opening for bi-folding doors, do make sure that the product you are considering having installed will actually be able to fit it! It is better to make the opening to the optimum size of the bi-folding door system you have chosen, rather than the other way round. One top tip to remember is that these systems are highly technical bits of kits, so make sure they are fitted by professional installers with experience fitting the actual system you are having fitted. Many reputable firms will not supply bifolding doors on a supply only basis for this very reason. Finally, it is worth knowing that some bespoke aluminium bi-folding door systems allow for one single section at one end to swing open, allowing say a 3 section sliding and folding door to butt up to this, enabling the property to have a travel door, pair of French door and bi-folding doors all in one configuration of 3 linked sections, plus one independent swinging open section. Think carefully whether you want your bi-folding doors to a) open to the left or to the right, b) fold inwardly or outwardly and c) have a standard or low threshold. So before ordering bi-folds, take your time and ask an expert for a demonstration of whichever bi-folding double glazed product you are considering before committing to a purchase, as not getting it right first time can be very costly.
