“Cautionary Tales for Children” explores the horribly hillarious rhyming tales written by Edwardian poet Hilaire Belloc They include the consequences of running away on your own, telling fibs, eating things that you shouldn’t and disobeying your father! The dreadful deeds and nasty habits of these children, and the fate that befell them are told in a wonderfully inventive rhyming trail around the eerie Nuns Walk, as visitors follow the clues to answer the questions on their trail sheets. Afterwards, there is an indoor craft activity in the woods, making your very own Halloween spiders.

The work was written as a parody of earlier Victorian moral and cautionary tales that Belloc decided had gone too far. These are therefore ridiculous over-the-top tales in that vein of ruthless humour children love.

The trees are in their autumn beauty, The woodland paths are dry, Under the October twilight the water Mirrors a still sky – William Butler Yeats
Golden October T
With nesting season over, autumn is the busiest time of year for the volunteers who saved a Surrey woodland two years ago
eazle Wood in Leatherhead had not been managed for a century, and, like a scene from a fairytale, the result was a dark, tangled mass of choked thorn trees and swamp-like ponds. Conservation experts from the Lower Mole Countryside Management Project have led groups from the residential and business communities in gently clearing fly-tipped debris and decades of dead branches to let light back into the landscape and to encourage greater biodiversity. As this year’s work gets underway, last year’s efforts are now reaping rewards, with new foliage appearing, and displays of darting dragonflies around open ponds. Surveys have recorded one ‘world first’ and numerous endangered species, vindicating those who always believed that this precious piece of land deserved protection. In addition to the ecological work, the mesmerising
history of the wood has been carefully researched and revealed. A well-known folk song describes the tragic murder of an unidentified woman in 1834, and the footprint of a long-lost house has been located under the moss and leaves in one part of Teazle Wood. Scattered fragments of terracotta, old maps and a short 1911 description of the five-bedroom house are all that remain of a once thriving property. Outside the wood, activity continues to raise funds to finish paying for the community purchase of the woodland. Artists who take their inspiration from nature have joined in, donating artworks to the cause and giving something back to the natural world that motivates them. Neil Lossock, who Royal Horticultural Society fans will know from the Chelsea and Hampton Court Palace Flower Shows, creates teazle sculptures exclusively in support of the Teazle Wood campaign. His striking teazles are available from Fire and Iron Gallery, and each one not only gives great pleasure to its new owner, but also makes a valuable contribution to Surrey’s natural heritage. orget the local supermarket’s refrigerated shelves, the best blue cheese in Surrey comes from a small converted farm building located a mere 30 metres from the cows that produce the milk. Off the beaten track and nestled in the beautiful Surrey hills is Norbury Blue Farm, owned by local cheese producers Neil and Michaela Allam. They keep a herd of 200 Fresian cows (each of whom has a name!), which roam freely in their lush green fields. The Allam’s approach to cheese making is absolutely artisan. Handmade from start to finish, the cheese is made only once a week, using a single large vat and just under 100 moulds. They produce just two artisan cheeses: Norbury Blue and Dirty Vicar.
has the characteristics of Caerphilly on the inside and Camembert on the outside. It is a full-flavoured, wellbalanced, earthy cheese. The Allams are passionate about artisan cheese making and put real love into their work. You will never find Norbury Blue or Dirty Vicar in any supermarket. Flavour Tastings are working with Norbury Blue Farm to bring these delicious cheeses to a wider audience – Norbury Blue will be featured in Flavour Tastings’ monthly cheese boxes in October and be part of their Cheese and Port Tasting on Wed 26th November. Watch for group tours to the farm next year to see first-hand how the cheese is made – the perfect day out for cheese lovers!
The Allams are passionate about artisan cheese making and put real love into their work. This is cheese making as it used to be. They are also the sole cheesemakers in Surrey. Norbury Blue is a naturally rinded, unpasteurised blue cheese. Once the cheese is made, Norbury Blue is dry salted and left to mature for 10-14 days at 10 degrees Centigrade. Then the individual cheeses are spiked with a long metal skewer, allowing Penicillium roqueforti mould to develop. A little-known fact is that the blue mould is added right at the start of cheese making, but it lies dormant until exposed to the air as part of the maturing process. The Allams spike and turn each cheese by hand – no mean feat with a batch of 50-plus cheeses! The Norbury Blues are left to mature for at least another 10 days, by which time they will have developed the dense blue-green marbling that gives the cheese its piquant flavour. A newer cheese produced at Norbury Blue Farm is cheekily named Dirty Vicar. This unpasteurised cheese 1 6 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4

ocal trio BLAKE return to the Epsom Playhouse on Friday 17 October with their ‘Live In Concert’ tour for 2014. The popular trio will provide an evening of great music and entertainment from these singers whose stunning harmonies and rat-pack banter have been entertaining audiences around the world. As well as classic songs from their three previous chart-topping and award-winning albums BLAKE are looking forward to performing songs from their latest album ‘Start Over’. BLAKE are working in partnership with UK based charity Walking With The Wounded starting with the launch of a charity single ‘To The Sun’ which has been adopted by Walking With The Wounded as its official anthem. Money from the sale of each single is donated to the charity. BLAKE’s most recent album ‘Start Over’, is a beautiful collection of contemporary harmony pop featuring stunning original songs and a few carefully selected covers, including Paul McCartney’s ‘Beautiful Night’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’. Having formed in 2007, recording and performing as a classical group, ‘Start Over’ is BLAKE’s first pop album and sees them embracing the challenge. The change in musical direction is in fact a natural progression for BLAKE. Inspired by
great vocalists such as the Bee Gees, Boyz II Men and The Beach Boys, and having toured almost continually since 2009’s ‘Together’ (their third album), BLAKE’s live set list has expanded to include more and more contemporary material. The group discovered that the strength of their vocal arrangements and four part harmonies allowed them to interpret a widening range of songs and the reaction from their audiences reinforced their belief that they were creating something special. BLAKE’s worldwide status continues to grow as the band take their music to important new territories and return to the Philippines where they are hugely popular. Their third album ‘Together’ topped the charts in the country last year and the group are putting the finishing touches on a new album specifically for the Philippines including a number of tracks sung in Tagalog, one of the Philippines’ predominant languages.

HALF TERM POTTERY PAINTING
Grayshott Pottery are running a walk in pottery painting event for children and adults during half term, Monday 27th October to Friday 31st October. The sessions are available between 10am – 1pm and from 2pm – 4pm. There will be a variety of pieces available to decorate ranging in price from £3.50 - £15 per item. All children under 16 to be accompanied by a responsible adult please.
S
ituated on the Surrey/Hampshire border, Grayshott Pottery has a long history. When it began in 1956, the Pottery was producing ceramic giftware for London stores and gift shops. It now creates studio art ceramics for galleries and homes around the UK. If you have ever thought that you would like to be a ceramic artist, but haven’t got the talent, now is your chance. Grayshott Pottery is offering visitors the opportunity to learn the skills of applying glazes to pottery under the watchful eye of freelance designer Myra McDonnell. A BA Honours degree from the North Staffordshire Polytechnic and an MA at the Royal College of Art started Myra’s career in ceramics. Her design and practical expertise has taken her all over the world and mastering her brushwork at Aldermaston Pottery under the guidance of Alan Caiger Smith has enabled Myra to contribute an accomplished expertise and a calm depth of skill to the Pottery and her own work alike. The days are intended for experienced as well as aspiring artists, and participants will learn to apply glazes to create their own unique artwork. A wonderful gift or a treat for yourself – you won’t be disappointed. Myra will be teaching you all the necessary skills so that you can learn how to build up layers of glazes using different techniques such as sponging and slip trailing. You are able to chose from a large platter, a vase or maybe a lamp for your final decoration piece.

‘War and Peace’
at the Wimbledon International Festival 2014
W
8-23 november 2014
imbledon International Music Festival 2014 has unveiled a highly thoughtful, creative and expansive programme for this year’s festival. Focusing on the theme of ‘War and Peace’, festival director Anthony Wilkinson has formed imaginative collaborations and partnerships once again, creating unique events and providing a platform for brilliant new generation artists. This year is Wimbledon’s most expansive year with a number of world class artists performing, including the much celebrated Borodin Quartet with Michael Collins, The Sixteen, The Philharmonia, Lawrence Power and The Katona Twins. Wimbledon’s concerts will also take place in venues such as St. John’s Church, Spencer Hill and Wimbledon Synagogue, venues with great acoustics that are definitely worth travelling to. A particular highlight is also the The Schubertiade - two concerts of Schubert with The Fibonacci Sequence with the option of a Viennese Dinner during the interval. A special Baroque menu will be served at the Light House Restaurant in Ridgway, a short walk from St John’s Church via Denmark Road. The War and Peace theme does not only serve to commemorate the centenary of WW1, as the brilliant guitar duo The Katona Twins will bring a programme of Spanish music interwoven with the poems and prose of famous international writers who responded to the Spanish Civil War. The Philharmonia Orchestra will also perform Richard Strauss’s masterpiece ‘Metamorphosen’, composed in the final days of WW2. Wimbledon also has a reputation for imaginative new productions and this year will include a full length production of The Soldier’s Tale, with costumes by 2 6 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4
Wimbledon College of Art. This will also include dancers and narrators and will be performed by members of The Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Robin O’Neill. Wimbledon has also extended its jazz series this year in association with Maggie Black Jazz Promotions, and the unusual duo of Zhenya Strigalev and Liam Noble will be performing, as well as The Paris Washboard Band (traditional jazz) and the Marc Laferriere Quintet (New Orleans Jazz). Wimbledon has received funding from the Arts Council for this new jazz series. ROYAL ROUTE FOR 2014 BONHAMS VETERAN CAR RUN
Motoring pioneers to use The Mall on 2014 London to Brighton journey
F
or only the second time in more than half a century, hundreds of veteran cars will start this year’s annual 60-mile adventure from London to Brighton by driving down The Mall, London’s ‘Red Carpet Drive.’ Although a regular part of the route in earlier years, The Mall has only been used once since 1962 – that was in 1996 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original Emancipation Run. This year the pioneering horseless carriages, all built before 1905, will leave Hyde Park as normal before passing under Wellington Arch and heading down Constitution Hill towards Buckingham Palace. After rounding the Victoria Memorial in front of the Palace, the cars will drive along The Mall’s red asphalt before turning right into Horse Guards Road and then left towards Parliament Square, Big Ben and Westminster Bridge. A total of 433 entries – up from 389 in 2013 – have been received by the Royal Automobile Club for the 2014 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. As tradition dictates it takes place, come rain or shine, on the first Sunday of November (2 November), with the first cars leaving at sunrise, this year 06:56. The oldest car on the event is a c.1888 Truchutet, a 4hp open tonneau. The entry list includes some of pioneering motoring most famous names, such as Benz, Daimler, Vauxhall, Peugeot

and Renault, while the entries includes steam-powered cars, electric cars, three-wheelers as well as petrol-powered four-wheelers. Regarded as the world’s longest running motoring event, the Run celebrates the original ‘capital-to-coast’ Emancipation Run. This was held on 14 November 1896, and marked the Locomotives on the Highway Act, which raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 to 14mph and abolished the need for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag. The first re-enactment of the Emancipation Run took place in 1927 and it has been held every year since, barring the war years and 1947 when petrol was rationed. Although famously not a race, there is a competitive element to this year’s Run with a Regularity Time Trial during the event. Participants will try to match their nominated ‘bogey’ time set for a 13-mile section between Crawley and Burgess Hill. and creates immaculate counters for folded apparel and accessories. The four facets of the ground floor’s load-bearing columns are clad with vitrines to create prominent sunglasses pillars. Freestanding furniture is bespoke; modular, triangular seating is hewn from a single piece of walnut. The first in a series of own-name stores planned, 36 Dover Street builds on the launch of the Victoria Beckham e-commerce site www.victoriabeckham.com in April 2013. Victoria Beckham has personally selected pieces for the store’s launch, several of which are unique to 36 Dover Street and victoriabeckham.com customers, together with exclusive sunglasses styles. A range of small leather goods is also introduced for the first time, including a small and large pocketed pouch, a journal, a wallet, a credit card holder, key rings and key chains – all produced in soft calf.
About the Victoria Beckham Brand
D
esigned by multi-award-winning Londonbased architect Farshid Moussavi, the three-storey Mayfair space brings together the refined materials, artisanal craftsmanship and modern design language for which the fashion brand is recognised in a bold and elegant environment. Taking Dover Street’s Georgian façades as a departure point, the building’s front door is cast in concrete to echo the proportions of the first floor windows. It slides open automatically to reveal a fluid space inside, where grand, graphic statements are offset by delicate details and luminous surfaces. The eye is drawn to an imposing flight of 4-metre-wide polished concrete stairs leading to a giant projection on the first floor’s end wall and the spectacular cast-concrete latticed ceiling above. By boldly cutting away diagonal portions of the floor plates on the upper and ground levels, Farshid Moussavi Architecture (FMA) has united all three floors of the 560-square-metre space, bringing
Since launching in 2008 the Victoria Beckham fashion brand has developed a distinctive and modern language of clothing. Bold, intuitive and refined, its wardrobe of apparel and accessories is now stocked in over 500 stores in over 60 countries internationally. With each collection Victoria adapts her own personal style to the needs and desires of the international women who swear by the label’s luxurious and flattering garments. Using only the finest craftsmanship, fabrication and materials, all five Victoria Beckham lines are developed at Victoria’s studio in London. The Victoria Beckham readyto-wear collection is primarily handmade in the UK, whilst the Victoria, Victoria Beckham and Denim collections are made in Europe. The Accessories and Eyewear are both expertly handcrafted in Italy. As the Victoria Beckham collections become ever more progressive, so this passion for innovation extends to the brand’s communications and creative projects. In 2013 it launched victoriabeckham.com, a website offering both e-commerce and interactive content curated to provide a more intimate view of Victoria’s design approach and working processes.
The Victoria Beckham fashion brand has developed a distinctive and modern language of clothing luminosity and striking sightlines through the interior. Elegance and ingenuity underpin a flexible interior scheme devised to complement rather than overpower the clothing on display. Wafer-thin shelves retract into walls and moveable blonde gold hanging chains are set in recess tracks to make way for installations, events and developments in the five different Victoria Beckham collections of Victoria Beckham ready-to-wear and Victoria, Victoria Beckham, Accessories, Eyewear and Denim. Smooth American walnut and bottle green glass surfaces accentuate generous changing rooms and cash/wrap areas, designed for a discreet and personal shopping experience. The warmth of these materials is reflected throughout the store in pristine mirror stainless steel that lines walls as well as the ceilings of the ground and lower-ground floors, 3 0 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4

Fashion Week
Spring/Summer 2015 Highlights
L
ondon Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent, with the schedule packed with shows, presentations, showrooms, events and parties from the best and brightest names in the industry. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists ’cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe. While most of us are thinking about our winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/ Summer Collections, and it was one of the event’s biggest line-ups yet.
A ROUND-UP OF SOME THE DESIGNERS AND THEIR AMAZING COLLECTIONS JULIEN MACDONALD
“Bottoms are back” says Julien Macdonald, as he declared 2014 the year of the derriere. “The bum is the new it thing, it was boobs, but now it’s the bum, so if you have one show it off!“ It’s been enforced slightly by Kim Kardashian and this really is the year of the bottom. ”Models at the designer’s show at Royal Opera House wore pieces designed to show off the new ‘it’ part of the body. Celebrities like Abbey Clancy, members of the Made in Chelsea cast and MTV’s Laura Whitmore watched as models wore soft shades of buttermilk, yellow, moss green, O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4 3 3

Then came a smattering of mini dresses, as the sexiness was ramped up on knitted swimsuits and even a teeny babydoll-style wedding dress (complete with Cathedral-length veil.) Julien, who has this year dressed names like Beyonce, Megan Fox and Emma Watson, also revealed the second wedding dress on the catwalk, a floor-length finale gown covered with real diamonds, pearls and French Chantilly lace, was worth a staggering £3m.
BURBERRY PRORSUM
Burberry previewed its Prorsum Womenswear Spring/Summer 2015 collection live from its custom-built venue in London’s Kensington Gardens. The collection, named ‘The Birds and The Bees’, included bright book cover designs, oversize butterfly prints and hand-drawn honey bees, which were referenced on the hand-painted runway and illustrated on the transparent roof above the 1500 guests. SIMONE ROCHA
Simone Rocha took inspiration from quaint ‘50s housewives and gave them an edgy spin for SS15, resulting in a cool-girl’s guide to doing demure... Rocha has developed a signature style of full skirts, sheer fabric and asymmetric cuts. She didn’t stray too far from that, but this collection still felt fresh and new. In parts, there was something of the 1950s saucy housewife about it, with headscarves, fluffy mules, nightdresses and even sheer trench coats. Other looks were classic Rocha; sheer dresses with bold, floral applique designs in black, white or red. Footwear is always a highlight with Simone Rocha, too. She’s a fan of a chunky lace-up, often with the focus on a perspex or jewelled low heel. Next season we’re looking forward to her Derby lace-ups and Mary Janes. The new Rocha spin? A kitten heel.
MULBERRY
Their Spring Summer 2015 Catwalk Collection is inspired by the sheer joy of an English country garden on a summer’s day. Floral prettiness is tempered by the ‘can do, can dig’ gardeners’ attire with practical pockets and utilitarian shapes. Laser-cut leather and substantial sandals contradict the delicacy of the intricate prints. The Mulberry Girl may be wearing the finest silk, but she remains cool, contemporary, and ready to enjoy herself whatever the English spring weather throws at her… Perennial English flowers, handsketched in the famous gardens of Kew, Sissinghurst and Great Dixter, inspire the new season prints. The delphinium appears as a grand monochromatic design on printed silk and lace. For an intricately woven jacquard this pretty floral is also contrasted with the uniformity of garden trellis. The colour palette works with White and Cream accented with Black and earthy Khaki, while rich Delphinium Blue offers a pop of colour. In true Mulberry style, prettiness is presented with an edge: dresses and skirts are paired with contemporary leather pieces, some with laser-cut perforations, and luxurious but casual lurex wool cardigans. Sleeves rolled up, our Mulberry girl’s style is inspired by the eccentricities of the English lady gardener. Skirts and pinafores with practical pockets nod to a gardener working in an idyllic country garden but ready for anything, tools in hand, unafraid of a bit of mud! The Mulberry Girl is wearing sandals inspired by classic gardening clogs. These practical and charming shoes are given a beautiful and fashion-forward makeover for
celebrities, and fashion glitz
this season’s Gardening Sandals, with soles carved from solid wood and criss-crossed leather straps. Natural Vachetta Leather is favoured for its natural and rustic finish; the perfect complement to the lavish prints and fabrics in the collection. Of course, no English country look can be complete without a Wellie, but this is no ordinary rubber boot. The upper of the new Mulberry Garden Wellie features the wild flower design, woven into a rich metallic jacquard.

SOPHIA WEBSTER
“JUNGLE IS MASSIVE” For Spring/ Summer 15, Sophia Webster played on different interpretations of ‘Jungle’. Finding basis in Henri Rousseau’s fantasy jungle world paintings and Henri Matisse’s whimsical leaf cut outs, Sophia metamorphoses leopard print, jungle flowers and plants with her own signature use of colour and print. Acid and techno colour palettes, coupled with Sophia’s own love of heavy rhythms and underground music, led her to invoke the hedonistic world of a 90s jungle rave. The collection is inspired by rave-wear: feminine club-colour camo prints, fruity colours mixed with Aztec prints, girly-warrior embellishments and graffiti tags adorn caged booties, platforms and knee-padded thighhigh boots as well as speech bubble bags and fruity backpacks.

ontouring is the professional make-up techniquethat women want to master for themselves at home. Little wonder when, executed correctly, you can enhance your facial features - and cleverly disguise flaws. The process is all about using darker colours to create dimension and lighter colours to highlight. In theory, you can whip up Kate Moss cheekbones in minutes.

with not-so-subtle shimmer. Sandler recommends going matte: “Go slightly darker than your skin tone, but not too dark, or it will look obvious and theatrical.”
SCULPTING SOS
Contouring is the quickest way to drop a few pounds from your face without going on a crash diet. The key is the placement of the product, so familiarise yourself with the natural contours of your face, around your cheekbones and jawline.“Sweeping sculpting powder along the jawline creates the illusion of slimmer, younger features,” Sandler explains. “ Blend the powder softly down onto the neck to avoid a tideline.” Creating natural looking shadow on areas that protrude will help them appear less obvious. Sandler says: “Apply contour under cheekbones to reduce the look of puffiness and gently shade around the sides of the nose to help it look slimmer. “You can even apply contour powder through the eye sockets to set back over-hanging lids, u sing a small eyeshadow brush.”
Contouring is the quickest way to drop a few pounds from your face without going on a crash diet HELLO, HIGHLIGHT
To dial the contouring up a notch, balance the shading with highlighter to really make your features ‘pop’. Key areas include upper cheekbone, nose bridge, cupid’s bow, inner eye corner, middle eyelid and brow bone. Sandler recommends: “Contrast against the sculpting by applying a light dusting of highlighting powder above it - this will add a subtle ‘lift’ to your features. “Practice makes perfect, and always contour in even light so you can really see what you’re doing.” Don’t be tempted to over-highlight. Applying to the whole brow bone can create an ageing effect, for instance. Achieve an instant facelift by applying a hint of highlighter to the tops of cheekbones. This should be visible when you turn side-on, but not from the front.
Containing optimum levels of lactic acid (a naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acid), the formula encourages the skin’s own exfoliation process, retexturising rough areas. Skincare isn’t just becoming high-tech, it’s virtually tapping into our postcodes. The days of the generic cleanse, tone and moisturise are over, replaced with products specific to our environment. Scan the shelves for the latest in city defence products that protect from pollutants, stress and UV. By Lisa Haynes, Press Association

I
f you’re living or working in a big city, you may not be able to see these daily aggressors, but their effects can manifest on your face. “The three major threats for skin in the city are sunlight, stress and pollution,” explains Tom Mammone, Clinique’s executive director of skin physiology and pharmacology. “A city lifestyle can also pose a real hazard to skin, in particular breathing in cigarette smoke, excessive alcohol, processed foods, as well as a lack of sleep. These modern stresses can compromise the skin’s natural defence system, leaving it open to damage.” Time for a skincare promotion? Employ some city-specific beauty into your regime.
POLLUTION DEFENDERS
Metropolitan living means that your skin’s pounded with a daily dirty cocktail of different pollutants. The bigger the city, the greater the impact, with air pollution hitting peak levels in parts of the UK this summer. “Pollution is one of the main causes of skin damage, creating harmful free radicals which strip the skin of moisture causing fine lines and wrinkles,” explains Shirin Valipour, founder of Orico London, which has been specifically developed for urban living. “Look to pollution-proof your skin by keeping its moisture barrier strong. Our skincare is made with b otanical moringa and lysate bioactives, which are clinically proven to stop dirt from sticking to skin, with lysate increasing the oxygen intake within cells.” TRY: Decleor Daily Defence Fluid Shield SPF30, £29.50 (www.decleor.co.uk); or Orico Streetwise Oxygenating Day Cream, £27 (www.oricolondon.co.uk). 4 2 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4
GRIME BUSTERS
Cleansing morning and evening is essential, but even more so when you’re living or working in the city. Pollution smog and emissions cause skin to become dry and flaky as bacteria builds up. “It’s important to remove city dirt and grime at the end of each day,” says Simple skincare make-up artist Caroline Frazer. “Use facial cleansing wipes when you get home from work to remove build-up and then cleanse thoroughly before bed.”A build-up of bacteria in pores will cause break-outs and uneven skin tone. Frazer suggests a double cleanse for an effective city detox: “ Use a purifying cleansing lotion first to remove surface dirt and make-up, and then a cleansing facial wash to penetrate pores and clean your face.” TRY: Ole Henriksen Grease Relief Cleansing Cloths, £12 (John Lewis); Simple Kind To Skin Purifying Cleansing Lotion, £2.99 (Boots); Yin Yang Skincare Essential Travel Kit For Extra Skin Defence, £28.56 (www.yinyangskincare.com).
STRESS PROTECTORS
If you’re living a fast-paced lifestyle, stress can eventually take its toll on your skin. Suffering with unexplained sensitivity, puffiness, redness, acne or extreme dryness? Your whirlwind city lifestyle could be the culprit. “The impact of environmental and emotional stress becomes immediately visible,” explains Dr Andrew Weil, an expert in integrative medicine. “Stress interferes with tissue regeneration and can trigger a cascade of cellular signals leading to chronic inflammation in skin. The reaction can
be activated by emotional and environmental stress, which can further aggravate the body’s inflammatory response.” TRY: Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief collection, from £16 (www.origins.co.uk); or Aveda Stress-Fix Concentrate Rollerball, £22 (www.aveda.co.uk).
SUNLIGHT BLOCKERS
Even on days when the sun is hidden behind dense cloud or tall buildings, your skin is exposed to damaging rays. Consultant dermatologist for Simple, Dr Susan Mayou, says: “The immediate effects of sun exposure can include redness, sunburn and flaking skin. However, in the long-term, UV damage causes poor texture and a sallow complexion, brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles and scaly, red, patches. “Apply a teaspoon of minimum SPF15 to the face daily all year round - just because the sun isn’t hot in January, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.” Reach for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. To help keep your protective moisture barrier intact, top up throughout the day during the summer, or try switching your foundation for perfecting BB or CC creams with SPF50. SUPPLEMENT
KITCHENS & B ATHROOMS
KITCHENS ARE THE NEW LIVING ROOMS On average, people spend from £8,000 to a massive £20,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space…so depending on the price range, what can that buy you? CHOOSING A THEME FOR YOUR KITCHEN Contemporary kitchens The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs. French country kitchen This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops
and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware. Shaker Style kitchen The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in. Retro Kitchen A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find

psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.
LAYOUT
Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wrap-around kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.
CABINETS
Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours which, incidentally, rarely work in small kitchens. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Hettich and Hefale have a good selection with timeless clean lines and if you’re feeling flush, Valli & Valli have handles to die for. Small handles generally don’t work, but chrome is effective and never dates.
WORKTOPS
Avoid wood near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and be warned, glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched.
5 2 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4
Consider twin-edged worktops that look like glass, but are laminate. Corian is good for the seamless look. Designers say there’s nothing they can’t do with it – sinks of the same material, coved upstands and so on. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. For cheaper ways to get the wow factor, mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces.
KITCHEN FLOORING
To put on a fantastic floor show, do your homework first. Start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards. Vinyl flooring Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost-effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner. Stone or slate Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you.
Laminate This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal
Start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer. Hardwood A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again. Ceramic tiles A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. So you can create your own dream kitchen!

Create a Luxury Oasis W e love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams. Bathroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.
A stylish bath
The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub.
7 2 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4
This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look.
The shower option
Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and
walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner,
Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness.
An appealing basin
Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household.
or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

evergreens only suitable for hedging? 7 8 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4
A
t this time of year the multitude of shades of red, orange and yellow of many of our deciduous trees is a sight to behold. I would add that a world where plants remain the same all year round would be a very boring one. However during the winter months, our gardens would look very bare and uninspiring without the help of evergreen plants. Without evergreens, gardens would be a forest of skeletal branches or even worse a mess of dead and decaying leaves. There are a few gems which stand apart due to their stem colour or winter flowers, but even these stand out more prominently with a backdrop of foliage. Some evergreens are generally thought of only as hedging, such as laurel, ilex, photinia and taxus, however this is often belittling their ability. All evergreens, including ‘hedging’, can be grown as specimen plants, growing majestically on their own or in mixed plantings where they can be allowed to show off their finest. Grown like this, the ability for hedging plants to be trimmed and trained formally can be used to their advantage, to shape them to
surprises customers in the nursery is Elaeagnus, varieties come in green or silver leathery foliage with or without yellow variegation, a solid but usually uninspiring plant for most of the year. Once winter approaches flowers start to appear in abundance, due to their size these are often overlooked being a similar size and shape to a clove borne within the confines of the branches. Once they start to open people regularly start to ask where the sweet smell is coming from: not realising that sometimes the best can come from small packages. Being close to the plant also is not a giveaway, as like many fragrant plants, sarcococca being another, the scent can be difficult to locate as the fragrance has a tendency to percolate outwards, sometimes settling in a higher concentration away from the source. Another often underutilised evergreen is the Skimmia, commonly used in association with bedding arrangements, this plant can provide interest with its flower clusters, green flower varieties are again grown for their fragrance. If berries are of interest Pyracantha and cotoneaster can add a different dimension to your gardens interest. www.plantsforall.co.uk
All evergreens, including ‘hedging’, can be grown as specimen plants growing majestically on their own or in mixed plantings produce forms that complement their surroundings and to create dense plants that provide excellent backdrops as well as perfect screening. Most evergreens produce relatively small and inconsequential flowers, although there are a few exceptions, including Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camellias, the best of which produce plate sized flowers. These can be used to great effect to provide the evergreen foliage lacking in winter, followed by the mass of bright flowers in late winter, spring and early summer when grown in suitable conditions. Just because the majority of evergreens do not bear large brash flowers does not mean that they should be discounted. Leaves come in many forms, shapes, sizes and colours, in addition to this, many evergreens bear relatively discreet flowers which may not be obvious to the eye but when in full bloom the scent can penetrate the cool damp air of winter and infuse it with fragrances that would cost a fortune in a perfumery. Some of the best scents come from Osmarea Burkwoodii (also known as Osmanthus Burkwoodii), small white flowers with a sweet heady punch in spring, or one of it’s close relatives. MAKING THE RIGHT DECISIONS?
it’s best to dive straight in From the moment they step through the front door, the majority of British homeowners know that their home is ‘the one’. In fact, over half of us have already decided to purchase our dream home less than an hour after viewing the property
I
t may seem surprising then that, while we find it so easy to make some of life’s bigger decisions, it’s often the smaller choices that we spend days, weeks or even months agonising over. Ironically, according to research from swimming pool builder Origin Leisure, we decide that a house is for us within minutes, but can spend months deliberating whether to make smaller home improvements. We trust our instinct for big decisions, but 60 per cent of us admitted to spending more time weighing up the pros and cons of the finer details rather than having the confidence to go with our gut feeling. Gary Taylor of Origin Leisure said: “Our 30 years’ experience has taught us that too much deliberating
8 2 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4
can often be counterproductive. A swimming pool is considered a luxury for some and a necessity to others, but what many have in common is that they wish they’d made the decision to add a pool to their home much sooner. Our advice is to listen to your instinct and do what will make you and your family happy.” Two families who took the plunge and never looked back are Mr and Mrs Henderson from Oxfordshire and Mrs Shears from Buckinghamshire. The Hendersons are no stranger to building projects. The couple built their beautiful and modern home ten years ago, an experience that left them less than enthused at the prospect of another home improvement project.
Origin’s work was beyond our expectations. We would recommend them to anyone who wants to have a pool house as part of their home and day to day life While both had very firm ideas about the standard of finish on the property, the builders had a very different idea. Mr Henderson explains: “The sad thing about the original house project was that the builders’ idea of finished was very different to ours. The building took over a year, and we began to think the early enthusiasm was beginning to wane slightly. So when we made the decision to add a pool house in the garden we couldn’t help remembering some of the pitfalls.” Luckily, history was not destined to repeat itself. The couple chose a striking bespoke modern pool house from Origin Leisure, who handled the project from start to finish, and they couldn’t be happier with the final result. The pool house has stunning stain softwood weatherboard exterior and slate grey roof to compliment the Hendersons home and fit in with the surrounding area. Grey aluminium bi-fold doors open up the building into the garden, bringing the outside in, while the ceramic tiles, a grey washed timber roof and country cream walls finish the interior beautifully. The building, which includes an additional extension with a changing room, shower room and WC, measures a total of 128m² and includes a porch and store room. Origin Leisure undertook every element of the process, from the initial ideas to planning, construction and completion. The couple were surprised at how stress-free the project was, as Mr Henderson explains: “Origin was infinitely patient with our changes of mind, moments of inspiration, and indecisions about detail. The company is very open to innovation and are happy to consider details in length, from pool size to tiling style and the unique roof option that we developed between us. “Origin’s focus is on quality. From director to architect,
project manager and the building team, the company’s experience shone through. From the very start of the project, right through to our first swim, the knowledge and understanding of this long established company gave us confidence in their numerous abilities. “Origin’s work was beyond our expectations. We would recommend them to anyone who wants to have a pool house as part of their home and day to day life.” Another happy customer is Mrs Shears, who also took advantage of Origin Leisure’s ability to manage the whole project from start to finish in the design and build of her barn-style pool house. THE TRUTH ABOUT CONDENSATION
C
ondensation, damp and mould are conditions that can affect millions of English properties throughout the country, as condensation can affect new and old homes alike. Condensation has been identified as being a major cause of dampness in houses and flats in this country, especially those with poor heating and ventilation.
Condensation causes?
It is a known fact that air inside a building contains a certain amount of water vapour, which generally increases when kettles are boiled, baths are run and if clothes are dried indoors etc. The volume of water vapour that air can hold is a function of its temperature; warm air has the capacity to hold more moisture vapour than cool air. Therefore as the air circulates, and comes into contact with surfaces cooler than itself such as walls, woodwork and windows, the water vapour to condenses, becoming liquid again. The steaming up of a bathroom mirror at shower time is a good example of how condensation droplets are formed; the mirror surface being cooler than the moisture-laden air. 8 4 O C TO b e r 2 0 1 4
Whilst the condensed liquid will run-off glass or painted timber surfaces, it can unfortunately in some circumstances soak into porous surfaces such as walls and ceilings.
Some effects of condensation
Condensed water that soaks into walls or untreated woodwork will left unchecked damage the underlying substrate of the building while simultaneously providing the perfect environment in which unpleasant and unhealthy mould colonies can grow. Many studies into the effects of inhaling mould spores unanimously agree that it causes damage to the immune system, skin rashes and respiratory disorders such as sinusitis and pneumonia.
Controlling the humidity is a solution
Humidity control is the best condensation control method and can be the first step towards ensuring that a property remains relatively free from condensation is to reduce the amount of water vapour in the air. Getting the right balance between heating and ventilation is the key to reducing condensation, not only in bathrooms and kitchens (where the steam produced by washing or cooking poses a high level of threat), but also in other rooms where poor airflow
in corners and behind furniture may cause a condensation problem. One can buy condensation control fans that reduce humidity in houses and flats, providing consistent heat recovery, air circulation and ventilation which allow air laden with excess water vapour to be safely removed. Where condensation problems have been neglected for some time and mould has already begun to form, mould remover kits can be used to fully restore the area and to guard against future mould.
Condensation on windows and doors
Condensation on windows, doors and in conservatories, along with the damage it can do to paintwork, curtains, wall coverings and window fittings, are problems sometimes encountered in all types of English buildings. Modern aids to home comfort have created rooms which are warmer but which often have less ventilation and fewer air changes. The result is that the water vapour produced by normal living activities is no longer able to escape up the chimney or through door jambs, window joints and other outlets. In
Where condensation problems have been neglected for some time and mould has already begun to form, mould remover kits can be used to fully restore the area certain circumstances, all these aids to comfort combine to create ideal conditions for the formation of condensation, which could form on the coldest surface within the room. This may not necessarily be on the glazing. Rooms in houses that have particular pre-existing problems with condensation can significantly reduce the amount of condensation by replacing the windows with products that have trickle vents and/or by ensuring the new window have opening vents with a lockable night vent facility to allow airflow at all times. The Glass and Glazing Federation’s own publication about condensation on their website, entitled “Condensation, Some Causes, Some Advice” clearly makes clear that if condensation occurs on the outside of the
external pane on double or triple glazed windows this is a positive sign that these thermally efficient replacement window products are in fact performing well. As the GGF article on condensation advice for home owners states “Due to recent innovations in the efficiency of double and triple glazing, along with updated requirements of building regulations and the lowering of carbon emissions, certain weather conditions may allow the formation of external condensation on energy efficient windows and doors. This is a natural phenomenon and a clear indication that the window or door is preventing heat loss from your house.” That said, condensation between the panes of glass in a double or triple glazed sealed unit means the unit has “blown” and is no longer providing the same level of thermal barrier that a modern high performance hermetically sealed unit can provide. Blown units should be replaced ASAP, particularly during the colder months, to ensure your property is insulated properly. If home owners who have fitted energy rated replacement windows still experience condensation on the inside of their windows, it usually means that their property has a particular problem with condensation that they need to address through improving the balance between heating and ventilation. More often than not, these cases are caused by insufficient ventilation within certain rooms that need addressing, as new windows and doors are designed to retain heat, so if there is not enough ventilation then condensation can build up if warm moist air is trapped with nowhere to escape to. Such condensation can be reduced by leaving open window vents to allow fresh air in, or retro-fitting trickle ventilation (although these can be expensive, ugly and defeat the object of fitting thermally efficient window products). Other solutions include adding air bricks, buying a dehumidifier or installing mechanical ventilation.
