Exhibition to explore the impact of War
A
new exhibition at The Lightbox gallery and museum, Woking, Surrey, will take inspiration from the commemoration of the Centenary of World War I and explore the impact of war through the work of artists in The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art. The exhibition, ‘The Ingram Collection: Impact of War’, will feature work by official war artists, their contemporaries, Post-War artists and contemporary artists who create responses to conflict in the 20th and 21st centuries. The works that will be shown in the exhibition will be selected from the The Ingram Collection and will include works by artists such as Edward Burra, David Bomberg, Graham Sutherland, Elisabeth Frink, C.R.W. Nevinson, William Roberts and Justar Misdemeanor. The exhibition will be on show from 15 October 2014 – 4 January 2015.
in his painting ‘A Dawn’ (1914), which will feature in the exhibition. The work portrays French soldiers transformed into a war machine where soldiers are no longer individuals, their fate of no importance.
Depictions of war During World War I and II, the government commissioned official War Artists to portray the events of the war. Two of these official war artists will feature in the exhibition, C.R.W. Nevinson, appointed in 1917 and Graham Sutherland, appointed in 1942.
Post-War, Neo-Romantics and Public Commissions In the Post-War Era, the devastation caused by World War I led British artists away from Pre-War veneration of the modern machine age. A search for a new national artistic identity was underway and in the 1940s contemporary critics applied the term ‘NeoRomantics’ to those artists whose interest in the work of their Romantic predecessors was fused with a return to an engagement with the British landscape. Their landscapes though, were accompanied by an unease created by the World Wars and their legacy. Yet another legacy of the World Wars was the
Nevinson’s appointment followed a successful first exhibition which caused a stir due to its realistic depictions of life and death on the Western Front in the First World War. His early artwork showed a Futurist influence and this can be seen
Graham Sutherland was commissioned by Kenneth Clarke, the head of the War Artists Advisory Committee who aimed to record Britain at war in all aspects, from the bombed out East End to the tin mines at Geevor, Cornwall. Although Sutherland’s work ostensibly depicts miners at work, the darkness of his landscapes hints at ominous symbolism which reflect his association with the Neo-Romantic movement.
Post-War re-building and remembrance in the form of public commissions. The exhibition will feature Elisabeth Frink’s ‘Eagle (Lectern)’, (1962), which was commissioned by Sir Basil Spence and Partners for Coventry Cathedral, which had been badly bombed during the War. Myth and mythology of War and Responses to Conflict The exhibition will also feature contemporary artists such as Darrell Evanes and Justar Misdemeanor who respond to the conflict of wars all over the world. Darrell Evanes’ piece ‘Canvas to our Imagination’ is the sculptural depiction of a Lancaster bomber. The concept of fragments in time is central to Darrell‘s work and he uses semi-abstract shapes and forms to suggest what once was and is no more. ‘Soldier’ by Justar Misdemeanor is a beautifully executed large scale charcoal work on paper which invites the viewer to speculate why the soldier is lying curled in the fetal position, rendered seemingly helpless. The soldier is depicted in uniform and with his weapon, but is in no way shown as a brave hero. It raises questions not only about the image itself but also about the nature of contemporary warfare.
The exhibition, ‘The Ingram Collection: Impact of War’ will be on show from 15 October 2014 – 4 January 2015.

new multi-sensory, 4D theatre allowing visitors an incredible chance to experience the dynamics of racing around a pre-war circuit at over 100mph opens on the 22nd August at Brooklands Museum. explains Scott, “We wanted to go on the road with one that was even better than our last. This is a great challenge after 12 years of singing together, but we are confident that the audience will love our versions of Something’s Coming from West Side Story, Bob Dylan’s Make you Feel my Love, Falling slowly from the musical Once, as well as popular classical must haves, the Pearl Fishers duet, Nessun Dorma, O Sole Mio, alongside some selfpenned titles and many more. “Being local has enabled us to call on the services of the fabulous new Surbiton based Arnould Girls Choir directed by Rebecca Gresson,” enthuses Jem. “I heard them singing at the Richmond Music Festival this year and I was amazed at their pure sound and beautiful harmonies and I thought we must sing with them if we get the chance…. the fact that my daughter is in the choir is a lucky bonus!” “We will also be raising money for the wonderful Holly Lodge Centre based in Richmond Park.” says Paul proudly. “The Holly Lodge offers all children the chance to experience our beautiful Richmond Park in a fun and educational way and we have

A traditional prep school, but with very modern thinking If you could find a school where your son was eternally happy, where the teachers really cared about getting the very best from every single boy, where the facilities were fantastic and the ‘results’ even better, you might think... ‘yes’, right?
I
f you learned that the ethos of this school was not ‘academic success to the exclusion of all else’ but one of ‘inclusive, allround education, where the learning does not always come from a book, but which still achieved end-game success’, then you’d think ‘definitely yes’.
Continual investment in recent years in infrastructure and facilities has resulted in a tremendous 100-tiered-seat Performing Arts Hall, iPad-equipped library (still with thousands of proper books), fantastic science and IT facilities, indoor swimming pool, huge sports hall, and an on-site coeducational nursery.
And then when you discover that this school does actually exists, on the outskirts of Cobham, serving the local community since 1879, you’d think ‘we should go take a look’.
Ultimately, however good the facilities are, boys will not give their best without great teachers who inspire, encourage, praise and enthuse. And that is exactly what the teachers at Parkside do, newly led (as of September 2014) by Mr Mark Beach, incoming head following the retirement of the long-serving David Aylward. Go along, take a look, and decide for yourself; only a visit can do justice to the jewel that Parkside School undoubtedly is. www.parkside-school.co.uk
Nestling in a big loop of the River Mole, Parkside is based in and around a mid-eighteenth century Palladian manor house, surrounded by 45 acres of gardens and playing fields. There is space here for boys to be boys, plenty of it, and that actually makes a big difference to a boy’s education, whether they, or you, realise it at the time. Parkside is very much a traditional prep school, but with very modern thinking. The curriculum is not just geared towards exam success (though that is what it undoubtedly achieves); it is geared more towards the rounded individual, with everything in balance and where manners and courtesy are just as important as academic rigour and sporting endeavour. No one element of a boy’s education comes at the expense of the others, but every boy is encouraged to shine in whatever aspect of life he has either an interest in or an aptitude for. All boys grow mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally and academically at Parkside, both in the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage or in the performance hall, and all within a pastoral framework that sets them on absolutely the right path for life.

A Flagship For Boys’ Education
L
ocated in the centre of the historic town of Guildford, the Royal Grammar School is an independent day school for boys aged 11 to 18. The School dates its foundation from 1509 and as a flagship for boys’ education has a national reputation for academic excellence but also prides itself on its traditional values of decency and respect, supported by outstanding pastoral care. RGS boys develop into confident, articulate and happy individuals who are prepared to meet the challenges of life at university and beyond. Academic excellence is at the very heart of the School’s philosophy. The RGS aims to encourage the growth of intellectual curiosity and creativity and to inculcate a life-long love of learning in the boys. Accomplished members of staff tailor their teaching to provide a stimulating, inspiring education which fulfils boys’ need for pace, variety and healthy competition. Boys are given the space and opportunity to mature and develop at their own pace and, most importantly, they enjoy a happy and challenging education in a supportive, positive environment. The RGS is consistently one of the top five boys’ schools in the country at both A Level and GCSE. In 2014, 80% of all grades at A Level were achieved at A*/A with over 39% at A*; over 90% of all GCSE results were passed at A*/A with 71 boys achieving straight A*/A grades. The School is extremely proud of its Oxbridge record. In the last six years over 200 offers have been achieved at Oxford and Cambridge including 28 offers in the recent round of admissions for 2014 entry. The School provides state-of-the-art facilities conducive to

performance at the very highest level as well as to nurturing young talent and enthusiasm. Recent purpose-built developments to the site include the Art School, Auditorium, Music School, Sixth Form Centre and Sports Hall, all within the last ten years. In addition, the School has twenty-acre grounds at nearby Bradstone Brook and it is not unusual for the RGS to field over twenty teams on a Saturday, especially in the hockey and rugby seasons. RGS boys have achieved national and international honours in a wide variety of sports recently including rugby, sailing and shooting. et in 17 acres of beautiful parkland in Cobham, Notre Dame School nestles in a picturesque 18th century mansion beside the River Mole. Despite the tranquil setting Notre Dame School is a hive of activity, with approaching a thousand children and teachers working hard in the important business of education. The school has an enviable reputation for the highest academic standards and a progressive, holistic, academic education that is underpinned by over 400 years of international educational tradition in 30 countries. Established in England in 1937, the school has always had the philosophy that the greatest success comes from knowing how to learn and how to ask the right questions; training pupils to take an active role in reaching and exceeding early expectations. From the vibrant Nursery to the exciting Sixth Form, tomorrow’s professionals acquire the skills, knowledge and qualifications that give them the best possible start in life. This summer, the A Level students have gained the highest percentage of A* - B grades (81%) in over ten years and girls are going on to study at prestigious Russell Group universities in a wide range of disciplines. At GCSE over half the grades awarded were A and A*. Twin aims of academic success and ability to strive for social justice in the world create rounded, compassionate, highly qualified and wise young women. Past pupils proliferate the professional sphere, many of whom enthusiastically retain links to Notre Dame.

The school is currently developing its all-weather facilities to complement the existing outdoor and indoor netball and sports facilities. The girls participate in choirs, sports teams, orchestras, language groups, outreach work, craft clubs, swimming squads and debating societies. The school councils for the different age groups and the peer mentoring and ‘big sister’ system provide pastoral care in a place that values the individual and always stretches a hand to help others, leading to charity initiatives as well as a happy and fulfilled community. Leadership is prized and all are encouraged to fully engage in the life of the school. In recent years educational research has shown that this type of all-round education adds limitless value to the lives and experiences of our young people, as well as enhancing academic success and personal confidence, so it is a delight to find a world-class school on the doorstep that has promoted this so strongly and so successfully for over three quarters of a century. Preparing your child for boarding school top tips from King Edward’s Witley
Here are some top tips from Justin Benson, Director of Admissions and Communications at King Edward’s Witley, on how to ensure a seamless transition into life as a boarder. Pick the RIGHT school for your child First and foremost, be aware that your child will NEVER settle at boarding school if it is the WRONG school for them. When reviewing the extensive number of schools on offer don’t be tempted to base your judgment purely on academic achievements – obviously this is especially true if your child is not particularly academically gifted. Other important factors to consider are opportunities to participate in sporting / creative activities, scope for siblings to remain together regardless of disparate academic abilities, standard of pastoral care, effort made to provide a school community that reflects the real word by admitting pupils from a wide range of social / economic and cultural backgrounds and geographical location (most parents will want their child’s school to be within easy access of the parental / guardian’s home). Take advantage of tasters If your child has attended prep school it is more than likely that in years 7 and 8, they have had already had a taste of boarding although boarding on a full time basis has a marked difference to just boarding Monday to Friday. For those pupils who have never boarded, the school should have offered a ‘taster’ sleepover the term before the child

joins – be sure to take advantage of this as it certainly helps to take some of the anxiety out of those first few weeks away from home. Show enthusiasm Children quickly pick up on any sign of negativity and it is essential that every member of the family relays an enthusiastic attitude towards the decision to attend boarding school. Take pains to explain to your child why they are leaving home and share in their excitement of the fantastic opportunities that will soon be coming their way. Always put on a united front – even if Mum is finding it difficult to come to terms with her son / daughter moving away, it is really important that she focuses on the happy times ahead for her child. Apart from providing reassurance, this will also prevent the new boarder from worrying unnecessarily about their parents! Limit contact Gone are the draconian days when children were denied contact with their parents once they had been dispatched to boarding school and in today’s society where modern technology allows for seamless communication regardless of geographical location, it is unlikely that parents won’t be in regular contact with their children. However, for the new arrivals in years 7 and 8, it is recommended that the first weekend ‘away’ from home they remain in school, even if they have family / guardian’s living close by. Excessive contact via iPad or iPhone is also frowned upon in the evenings as this can sometimes impact on the ease with which a child is able to settle into their new environment. Do make sure that the school has an advanced Internet security policy to ensure the continued safety of your child when he / she has access to the web.
House happy The Housemaster / Housemistress will represent a pivotal person in your child’s life and it is vital that parents feel 100% comfortable that the person who will be largely responsible for a child’s emotional / educational / physical and moral welfare, is regarded as a good match. Take time to get to know the Housemaster and the house that he / she presides over. Some parents may visit up to four times before a decision is made regarding which house is most suited to their child. Be prepared Make sure every detail is taken care of in the run up to starting school. Check the school kit list to make sure nothing is forgotten as sometimes something as trivial as not having the right equipment can be enough to trigger a bout of homesickness. Ensure your child is familiar with the layout of the school site and begin to slowly encourage a stronger sense of independence during the holidays (invite your child to take responsibility for simple aspects of day to day living such as keeping their bedroom tidy, maintaining a good personal hygiene routine and taking care of their belongings), don’t be tempted to ramp up the parental care just because you know he / she won’t be around so much from September onwards! Happy boys love learning!
L
anesborough is Guildford’s very popular prep school for boys, providing the highest quality academic and all-round education for boys from 3 to 13. Major plans have now been approved to develop a neighbouring property to improve and enhance existing facilities and space but to still keep class sizes to an average of 16. The Head, Clare Turnbull, and her staff believe that boys need to be happy and confident to be able to learn. They guide each individual boy on his journey giving him the necessary skills as well as a love of learning. Lanesborough creates an environment that allows each boy to partake fully in an education tailored to his needs. It is robustly academic, allowing the boys to be competitive, inspiring them to be supportive and ensuring that they develop a wide range of interests. It prepares them to take advantage of the many opportunities that life has to offer: a true preparatory education tailored for each boy. The academic success of Lanesborough is well known with boys regularly achieving scholarships to their chosen senior school, as well as being the first prep school to be nationally accredited for its gifted and talented provision and it receiving an outstanding inspection report. For example, this summer two current pupils, through one of the After School Clubs, achieved A Grades in GCSE Astronomy. The wonderful academic life at Lanesborough is enriched by a superb music tradition and an incredible range of sporting and creative clubs and activities. To assist working parents, Lanesborough has recently extended

Help on your doorstep: A new diagnostic service for people worried about dementia Red & Yellow Care, the first private healthcare provider dedicated to dementia, has now launched in London and the South East. Among their range of services, Red & Yellow Care provides an easy-to-access, fast track diagnostic assessment
P
eople who are concerned that they or their loved one may have dementia often feel lost and confused. They need clarity about the symptoms, sensitive support and useful advice. Unfortunately, many people worried about dementia do not receive the guidance they require. Some people do not seek help themselves due to fear and stigma. Others have difficulties finding or accessing specialist services. Overall, only 48% of people with dementia in the UK are formally diagnosed, leaving the majority to struggle on for many years without clear answers, without a plan and without crucial treatment and care. The right care and support helps people manage their everyday activities better, reduces psychological and behavioural symptoms and prevents rapid decline of physical health. This avoids crisis and unnecessary hospital admissions, helps people with dementia to live in the comfort of their own home for longer and above all, lead a more fulfilling life. It is therefore essential that people with dementia receive a timely diagnosis. Red & Yellow Care provides a consultant-led diagnostic service without the usual barriers. It offers discrete home assessments typically within 1 week of referral. The specialist consultants are flexible and can arrange visits during the day, evening or weekend. The assessments are thorough yet sensitive, and plenty of time will be devoted to discussing the assessment results and providing information that helps the individual and their family to move forward. If the assessment does not lead to a diagnosis of dementia but other health issues are found or suspected, then Red & Yellow Care will guide the individual to the right specialist for further investigation.
62 september 2014
How does the diagnostic service work exactly? • Assessments are led by a specialist consultant – either a geriatrician, a psychiatrist or a neurologist. • The consultant visits the individual at home – or alternatively can meet in Red & Yellow Care’s consulting rooms in Kensington – to assess memory and recall, along with physical and psychological wellbeing. • In some cases the consultant may recommend additional tests in order to reach an accurate diagnosis. • A follow-up consultation with the individual, their carer, the consultant and a specialist dementia nurse takes place to discuss the diagnosis and possible treatment and care options. • A detailed report is then prepared by the consultant. If dementia is diagnosed, Red & Yellow Care can also provide specialist care and support tailored to the individual, whether they live at home or in a care home. A named specialist dementia nurse draws up a care plan, monitors and manages the individual’s health and supports the carer and family. The service includes 24 hour phone support and access to a multi-disciplinary team of consultants and therapists. This unique health management service for people with dementia and their family is ideally combined with the daily personal care delivered by domiciliary care providers. “Had a wonderful appointment with my mum. Amazed at the thoroughness and delicacy which the doctor afforded her.” Laura, daughter and carer Dr Nori Graham, Red & Yellow Care’s Medical Director, has worked with people with dementia for over 40 years and recommends that anyone worried about dementia “seeks a timely diagnosis to end the uncertainty, make plans for the future and put care and support in place from the start.” To find out more about Red & Yellow Care and their diagnostic and care services call 0203 7000 163 or email contact@redandyellowcare.com. Ask Sharon….Our Medical My lips have got much thinner and I have lines but am petrified to have filler in them, as I don’t want a trout pout! Agreed who does! Many worry about lip and cheek treatments. I believe lips should look perfectly natural after a dermal filler lip treatment. I may say it often… the goal is that no one should know you had a treatment. The aim is for lips to appear rejuvenated and revitalized, restoring not plumping and not a hint of pout trout!! And no more lip stick bleeding either.
I have dark sunken circles under my eyes and it nothing seems to help. This is a common complaint. I use an elegant filler specifically designed to treat the eyebag area; rehydrating and improving the tone and luminosity. And it also has the added benefit of amino acids, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins which continue to infuse the area for maximum long-term results.
What is the vampire facelift PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma but is often referred to as the Vampire facelift. Don’t let the name put you off- the Vampire Facelift is one of the safest and most effective non-invasive skin rejuvenating treatments around. It has been used in sports medicine to heal muscular injuries for over 20 years as well as dentistry. This medical treatment involves taking a sample of your blood and separating it with a medical centrifuge. The platelet rich plasma (PRP), or the clear bit, contains growth factors and proteins which repair and regenerate tissue. The PRP is injected back into the skin with our sophisticated mesotherapy gun, which is painless. It stimulates the production of collagen, elastin and increases the blood supply to the skin. It improves skin texture, lines and wrinkles. It is great for crepey areas especially under and above the eyes and neck. It is highly effective at improving sun damage or dull, worn-out looking skin too. It can help the skin to look plumper and healthier with reduced lines and a smoother texture, and the good news it will keep improving as your skin continues to make collagen and elastin. A perfect way to give your skin a lift. 70 september 2014

Hands lose volume- tendons and veins become more visible. Volume is easily and effortlessly achieved using a dermal filler. As well as restoring the volume it nourishes the skin from within, leaving them looking soft, smooth and natural.

Practitioner I have three young children and they keep telling me I look cross even when I don’t feel it!! And my crow’s feet are getting deeper. Does Botox help? Yes. Is the simple answer. It can relax the area and also can make you look more refreshed. Again, done subtly no-one should know. Dermal fillers can be used here too. I also think medical needling is an superb anti-ageing organic treatment as it encourages your own collagen production which starts to slow down over the age of 25 and will help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as just making the skin glow. I believe everyone should have a course of micro needling as well as using daily anti-oxidant serum plus a Vitamin A cream. And always, always a sunscreen of SPF 50 every day-even Christmas Day!
I am getting married in two months. However, I suffer from excessive sweating and I really worried that I will sweat constantly and am really embarrassed. This is more common than you think. Hyperhidrosis can be acutely embarrassing but is easily treated with tiny amounts of Botox painlessly injected into the armpits. It simply switches the sweating off for about 6-9 months. I treat a lot of men and women and generally most say it is utterly life changing.

What’s Your Environmental View?
B
ack in 2007, Buckinghamshire based Hazlemere Window Company became the first company in the UK to manufacture and supply a dual frame aluminium window system that achieved an ‘A’ Window Energy Rating. So far so good. But what does it really mean for the environment and perhaps more importantly, homeowners in England? Nowadays we are all constantly being encouraged to do our ‘bit’ for the environment and are accustomed to the energy efficiency labels that are on all the white appliances that we buy, as these indicate the extent to which the product we are purchasing is energy efficient, and therefore how environmentally friendly it is. With the environment and green issues becoming more important daily because of the devastating effect on our environment of climate change, most of us, given the option, will probably opt for the more

energy efficient rated models secure in the knowledge that we are doing our ‘bit’ for the environment and also probably saving money on our electricity and gas bills. Many years ago now, the UK Government turned their attention to the fabric of our houses and developed a system whereby homeowners could choose energy efficient products for other areas of their home as well. Much work has been done in the last decade to bring new, higher standards to the thermal efficiency of windows and doors and this has now finally evolved to the point where the windows and doors you choose should carry the highly recognisable and understandable energy efficiency labels called Window Energy Rating. Hazlemere Windows, Doors and Conservatories have always promoted the energy efficiency of their new generation aluminium windows and doors and they
H OUS E & GA R D E N
etc), as without these energy saving products being installed, FENSA will not issue a FENSA certificate to prove compliance. According to the Energy Saving Trust, nearly a fifth of heat lost from un-insulated homes is through the windows. Investing in one of Hazlemere’s Eco-friendly window systems makes a significant contribution to reducing this which in turn helps to keep homes warmer. Using less energy to keep you warm not only reduces your carbon emissions but saves you money as well. For example, Hazlemere’s UPVC triple glazed windows achieve an A+ rating, having a combined U-Value of 1.0 W/M2K.
wasted no time in testing their systems to ascertain what level on the familiar A-C scale they could achieve. Quite simply, the higher the rating, the more thermally efficient the window system is. Using the latest, stateof-the-art materials Hazlemere successfully proved they could provide homeowners with an aluminium or UPVC window system that provided the highest possible ‘A’ rating. Independently tested, Hazlemere’s range of Eco-friendly windows offers homeowners a real choice of energy efficient, environmentally-friendly products.
However, achieving energy efficiency as a window is only part of the story if homeowners are concerned with the overall environmental impact of what they buy as well as saving money. Hazlemere’s aluminium Eco-friendly windows are obviously made from aluminium which has a very positive environmental story all of its own. Apart from having a long life in use, once it reaches the end of its life it can be infinitely recycled. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy needed to produce the original material plus the finished product has all of the same qualities as
the original as well which means it can be recycled time and time again. Wherever we look we are being encouraged to recycle; plus asked to consider what happens to the products that we own once they have reached the end of their life, as well as making environmentally friendly choices in terms of energy use. The same scrutiny can now be applied to the windows we buy, and with Hazlemere’s Eco-friendly windows, homeowners can rest assured they are indeed doing their ‘bit’, given Hazlemere Window Company is accredited to BS EN ISO14001 for waste management, as they also recycle old PVC windows, wood, metal and glass. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd is a family owned business that has been trading locally over three decades, providing all of its window, door and conservatory customers with a fully comprehensive robust ten year guarantee, backed up by its own inhouse team of service engineers, who are dedicated to maintaining the quality of both products and installation. The company owns the freehold of their 56,000 square feet Head Office, Factory and Showroom in High Wycombe, which is where their own experienced team of designers, consultants, surveyors, fabricators, installers and service engineers are based. To find out more call one of their experts on 01344 989939 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk
The minimum standard for replacement windows since 1st October 2010 when the Building Regulations were tightened up is a Window Energy Rating (WER) of “C” or a minimum combined U value of 1.6W/m2K. Both UK property owners and installers are now legally required to fit these thermally efficient windows (if replacing existing windows or fitting new ones to an extension september 2014 79

Hedging - A job for October!
T
he chill on the morning air is a wakeup call, that autumn is just around the corner. Although early, look around and you will start to see signs of autumn leaf colour starting to appear. This year leaf fall could well come early due to the high summer temperatures, but in theory the leaf colours should for the same reason, be a sight to see. Putting this aside, now is a sensible time to sort out your hedging requirements Autumn planting is the best time to plant most plants, other than tender ones, as it enables the roots of the plants to establish themselves over the winter months, when the top of the plant is dormant, or with evergreens only semiactive. With hedging this season can be even
82 september 2014
more important, where the use of bare root or root ball plants are intended for use. The advantages of having root ball plants over either pot grown or bare root plants are dramatic. Generally pot grown hedging is less bushy and a lot more expensive than it’s root ball relative. The reason for this is that pot grown products suffer more stress during their lives. Plants grown in this way, have to be grown for years, to get to a reasonable size, as they are often restricted in growth, despite the fact that during this time they would have to be re-potted at least every year, making the plant more expensive year on year. Root ball plants are planted into fields as
H OUS E & GA R D E N
young plants and require significantly less labour input, each year they get trimmed, to keep them bushy, and the root ball is undercut, to encourage fibrous root growth, to prepare the plant for eventual lifting. These operations are often carried out mechanically which minimises the labour input. Plants grown in the soil generally suffer a lot less stress, as water and nutrients are less likely to become limiting factors; unlike in container growing, this allows plant growth to be more vigorous and healthier. The establishment of these two different types is very similar for large specimens, provided they receive adequate and consistent watering. If maintained properly, after planting, neither of these should suffer any losses. The only time this starts to change is in the late spring when temperatures start to rise, but at this time root ball hedging usually becomes unavailable anyway. The final type of hedging is the bare root hedging, these are often grown in a similar way to the root ball hedging, often these are restricted to relatively small plants. This type do often suffer losses, however the prices are in many cases significantly cheaper. The main features of these plants
are that they are small both in height and relatively thin, hence they are often called ‘whips’ in the trade, the reason they are not usually bushy is that they spend a lot less time in the ground and are often no more than large cuttings. October onwards is an ideal time to create a hedge, as soon as the hedging becomes available. Root ball hedging, for most types of hedging plant, is far superior to container grown plants and generally are cheaper, bushier and available in a wider range of types and sizes. If you want a hedge to provide privacy quickly it is a false economy to go too small as often newly planted hedging can take 6 months to establish a good root system before growing away rapidly. Establishment of a good root system over winter, whilst the rest of the garden is dormant is another reason for planting in autumn, by spring the plants are ready to put on foliage quickly. Hedging plants are one of those things which people tend to buy because they need it rather than want it, but even so there are plenty of choices of variety and size to suit most situations. The slower
growing plants tend to be more expensive than their equivalent faster growing competitors. The choice of type of hedge is huge and largely depends on their different characteristics and cost. Amongst the more common evergreen hedges are laurel, Prunus laurocerasus, or the smaller leaved Portuguese laurel, Prunus lusitanica, both bearing dark green evergreen leaves that provide an excellent backdrop for colourful flower borders. Photinia or red robin are evergreens which provide a bit of character themselves, with their red shoots in spring and early summer. Holly (Ilex) and Pyracantha with their autumn berries and intruder resistant thorns are another option. Another less commonly seen hedger can be made using Elaeagnus which either comes in a silvery green leaf or variegated forms all hardy and are characterised by their small fragrant flowers. I have mentioned only a few of the options available and for more advice I recommend visiting any good nursery where you can find and get advice on a much wider range of options. www.plantsforall.co.uk

Best Dressed Fireplaces Since man first started to use iron, accessorising the fireplace has been a major focus. Tools that not only do the job but are also richly decorated with flora, fauna, pattern and texture have accompanied fire for thousands of years.
O
ne of the earliest British examples is the Capel Garmon firedog, found by a farm worker in North Wales in 1852, and believed to date from around 50BC-AD50. Firedogs were usually made in pairs, and are still used to raise firebaskets off the hearth of a fireplace to allow air to circulate. Historically, as well as lifting logs and baskets from the hearth, they also functioned as spit rests, as mulling aids (ale and wine were warmed in jugs supported on special holders incorporated into the firedogs) and as status symbols reflecting the wealth and importance of the owner. The Capel Garmon firedog features striking animal heads, and would have been an exceptional feat of craftsmanship in its day. Modern blacksmiths, two millennia later, still favour animal heads to embellish firedogs, pokers, chestnut roasters and toasting forks. Leaves are also popular, as

well as the beautiful knots, twists, cages and plaits practised by accomplished smiths for centuries. Contemporary design also plays its part alongside the traditional choices – wonderful, squashed forms exploit the plasticity of hot iron, and the waxy sheen of careful hand-finishing highlights the subtle colour and texture of the worked metal. Firebaskets, in which logs or coal are burned, have an equally rich history, as do firebacks – heavy iron plates, almost always ornate, that lean against the back of a fireplace to reflect heat into the room. Log storage has become a specialist area in recent times – log hoops of many shapes and sizes are used inside and outside to keep logs tidy and off the floor or ground. Every well-dressed fireplace needs a firescreen, to prevent the occasional spark doing any harm. These are usually made of flat mesh in an interesting frame, or mesh woven into a curtain suspended from a rail. Fire and Iron Gallery at Rowhurst Forge in
Surrey has been making fire accessories since 1932. An impressive collection of firebaskets, firebacks, tools, log hoops and firescreens is on display and available to buy at the gallery throughout the year.
