MAGAZINES A lot of people are intimidated by galleries or overwhelmed by the prospect of choosing a suitable artwork for their home or as a present or as an investment piece...” explains GALERIE PRINTS founder Stuart, “but actually there should be nothing intimidating about it at all!”. “That’s one of the core reasons why we created GALERIE PRINTS, to make really beautiful photography and art prints genuinely accessible.” - we take a closer look at Galerie Prints in Wimbledon. The most astonishing cars ever produced, a line-up of world-famous luxury brands, and one of the UK’s most beautiful historic royal settings. That’s the successful recipe for the Concours of Elegance, returning to Hampton Court Palace from 4-6th September Opened in December 1969, the Jermyn Street club has welcomed a who’s who of A-list celebrities through its unassuming doors and into the 300-capacity basement of bacchanalia, below. Original members included Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Roger Moore, Sir Michael Caine and sisters Joan and Jackie Collins, but the club quickly became a magnet for movie stars, musicians and even royalty, and before long, Tramp became a byword for sophisticated debauchery. Whether it’s the swinging Sixties or the minimalism of the Nineties, every decade has a distinctive style, each championed by certain celebrities. Style icons help encapsulate everything that is fashionable from their time, while not necessarily being the celebrities who had the most out-there or unique style. Instead, they’re individuals who captured the feel and fashion of a specific era, set trends everyone wanted to follow, and are still today associated with the style of a particular decade.

The most astonishing cars ever produced, a line-up of world-famous luxury brands, and one of the UK’s most beautiful historic royal settings. That’s the successful recipe for the Concours of Elegance, returning to Hampton Court Palace from 4-6th September.

Hampton Court Palace from 2017. As the Concours of Elegance evolved over the years – always with a stunning collection of cars at its heart – it has morphed into a celebration of luxury goods, fine food and drink, wonderful music and superb displays of art. The line-up of cars is a veritable feast of the most famous brands in the world; Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Bugatti and Lamborghini all feature. But each car in the Concours must be invited to attend, and to get an invitation, your car must be extremely special. An expert Concours of Elegance Steering Committee of motoring aficionados pick one-offs, rarities and models with incredible backstories to invite to Hampton Court Palace to create a truly special line-up of vehicles. The Concours of Elegance’s centrepiece display is reserved only for the most extraordinary vehicles or astonishing motoring feats. 5O YEARS OF TRAMP

18 SEPTEMBER 2020

London’s most iconic private members club, Tramp is celebrating 50 years at the pinnacle of the nightlife industry

O

pened in December 1969, the Jermyn Street club has welcomed a who’s who of A-list celebrities through its unassuming doors and into the 300-capacity basement of bacchanalia, below. During the 1970s it wasn’t uncommon to see George Best on the dance floor while Sir Matt Busby frantically called the club’s front desk, trying to locate his absent star player; Marlon Brando holding court in the restaurant over a glass of scotch and Amaretto; and Frank Sinatra relaxing on his favourite seat in the lounge area, where guests would fall over themselves at the sight of Ol’ Blue Eyes as they emerged from the adjacent women’s toilets. Sir Rod Stewart once said of the club: “I remember coming out of Tramp when I used to play Sunday morning football and I’d get home at about four or five in the morning and I’d get up about three hours later for an 11 o’clock kick off - smelling of booze!” The club’s original decor has been lovingly preserved, with beautiful, 17th Century oak panelling throughout and chandeliers from the Rothschild Palace hanging from the ceilings - save for one, memorable absence, where legendary The Who drummer, Keith Moon leapt from his table and brought the chandelier crashing to the floor before being escorted from the club screaming: “You can’t ban me from Tramp! Where else will I go?” He was welcomed back 24 hours later, after apologising profusely and paying for the damage. But while celebrity anecdotes undoubtedly helped to build interest in this mysteriously secretive club on the border of St. James’s and Mayfair, it has flourished through five decades thanks to its core principles: To offer luxurious service and fine dining in a relaxed and sociable environment; and to treat every member as a VIP. General Manager, David Fleming, says: “Tramp is

more than just a members club. It is an intimate space with a limited membership and we pride ourselves on being able to welcome each and every guest by name, remember their favourite drink and where they like to sit in the restaurant or bar. “The club was built on quiet word-of-mouth, with our details being passed on by members on film sets, in business meetings and between bands, and over the years it has almost become a ‘password’ around the world; members frequently tell me how they’ve been to a far flung place and been given the best table in a restaurant because the owner is also a member of Tramp. “We talk about our membership as a family and in many cases, they really are - we have original members whose children and even grandchildren have grown up and joined the club and three generations can use it together. “If these walls could talk, they’d have a lot of stories to tell; but of course, they wouldn’t say a thing because that’s the Tramp way.” The club launched its 50th anniversary celebrations with a star-studded party in May, attended by Sir Rod Stewart, Sir Michael Caine, Dame Joan Collins, Bill Wyman, Nathalie Dormer, Mark Ronson and many more, and members will enjoy further special events throughout the rest of the year. Prospective members may apply via the club’s website at www.tramp.co.uk/memberships. But remember: What happens in Tramp, stays in Tramp.

An oasis on your doorstep A guide to London’s most expensive garden squares

Eaton Square Gardens

L

iving or working in Park Crescent, W1 London can create a buzz like no other. Commuters, residents, prestigious stores, vibrant bars and restaurants - the atmosphere for some can be electric. In contrast, in some of the most exclusive areas of London are private, tranquil green spaces….the city’s garden squares. They’re a protected species, some accessible only with a key and surrounded by some of the most expensive homes on the market. Many are period properties often constructed in crescents, terraces and squares. So important are they that, in 1931, the London Squares Preservation Act was introduced to protect more than 400 from being built over. Let’s take a look at the most expensive and how much its privacy and exclusivity will cost you…

£8.79million. Former residents include Prime Ministers William Gladstone, Earl Grey and Lord Palmerston. It is the location of what is thought to be Britain’s most expensive home, with rumours six years ago that a Saudi prince had sold 18 Carlton House Terrace for £250million.

“Famous residents include Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin”

Carlton House Terrace Gardens, Westminster £8.79million

Top of the list is this exclusive road just a short stroll from Buckingham Palace. A property will cost you an average of 22 SEPTEMBER 2020

Eaton Square, Belgravia £5.88million

One of the most prestigious addresses in London. Famous residents include Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin. More recently, advertising mogul Charles Saatchi and football managers Jose Mourinho and Sven-Goran Eriksson are all thought to have lived there. Eaton Square is a stone’s throw from Sloane Street – home to luxurious brands such as Gucci, Cartier, Dior and Versace.

Wilton Crescent Garden, Belgravia £5.35million

Wilton Crescent was named after Thomas Egerton, 2nd Earl of

Wilton. It has been home to royals, political leaders and celebrities ever since. Surrounded by a semi-circle of graceful white-stucco houses, it’s a calm and tranquil place. Among its most famous residents were Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, a British Royal Navy officer and uncle of Prince Philip, who was infamously assassinated by the IRA in 1979.

St James’s Gardens, Notting Hill £3.81million

The gardens are laid out in an informal woodland style, dominated by fine chestnut and lime trees dating back to the 19th century. The garden is in the heart of the Norland Conservation Area, with the premiums surely pushed up by its close proximity to the open spaces of Holland Park, attracting many wealthy businesspeople and celebrities such as Sir Richard Branson and David Beckham.

Thurloe Square, Brompton £3.76million

The square is named after John Thurloe, an advisor of Oliver Cromwell, who owned the land in the 17th century. Sir Henry Cole (1808– 1892), the first Director of the V&A Museum, lived at No. 33. The building is marked with a blue plaque.. Not only is the square dog-friendly, it also has a children’s playground and a stroll from the shops, restaurants and museums of desirable Knightsbridge.

Rosmead Garden, Notting Hill £3.64million

Hanover Gardens, Notting Hill £2.97million

This peaceful woodland garden is situated within the Ladbroke Estate. Among its famous former residents was Dame Sylvia Crowe, the noted landscape architect. This communal garden used to be known as Hanover Terrace Garden, Hanover Terrace being the old name of Lansdowne Walk.

Markham Square, Chelsea £2.73million

One of Chelsea’s finest garden squares, situated north of King’s Road, and a short walk from Sloane Square. The building of the original square began in 1836 on the site of the old Box Farm orchard – owned by the Markham family. In 1935 the garden was laid out as a cherry orchard. After WW2, the square was redesigned by the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s head gardener to resemble a private country garden.

“Perhaps one of London’s most famous garden squares, having featured heavily in the Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts film Notting Hill”

These exclusive gated gardens are steeped in history and treasured sanctuaries amongst the hustle and bustle of our capital. Wealthy buyers from around the globe continue to be attracted to London’s squares, mainly due to their scale, style and timeless beauty.

Perhaps one of London’s most famous garden squares, having featured heavily in the Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts film Notting Hill. The space is quite unique among its contemporaries, with many of the homes surrounding it having direct access onto the green via a backdoor, making it a rear garden of sorts.

Kensington Square, Kensington £3.16million

With an average property price of £3.16million, it was originally known as King’s Square, built in honour of the reigning monarch at the time, James ll. The garden is private and not open to the public, though it has taken part in the annual Open Garden Squares Weekend. Former residents include composer Hubert Parry, philosopher John Stuart Mill and John Simon the sanitary reformer.

Park Crescent, Marylebone £3million

This crescent is among the most prestigious in the capital, in a desirable location at the north end of Portland Place and south of Marylebone Road. It comprises beautiful stuccoed terraced houses designed by the architect John Nash, and forms into a semi-circle. The original plan was to build a circular building, but only the bottom half was completed. Between the arms of the crescent is a private garden, recognised as being of historic interest.

NOBU LONDON SAFETY & STYLE

N

obu London Old Park Lane has reopened its doors after several months of lockdown. An integral part of London’s dining scene for over 23 years, customers are ready to return for their taste of Nobu. The famous Black Cod Miso is sure to be at the top of many lists for diners, while the Baby Tiger Shrimp Tempura was cited as the most-missed dish by customers while at home. Bright and spacious, with large windows that look out towards Hyde Park, Nobu London was the first European location of the now globally renowned brand, named after chef and founder, Nobuyuki Matsuhisa. A pioneer in Japanese cuisine, Nobu’s innovative food has amassed a devoted following the world over. In addition to

For those who haven’t yet returned to the city, or who are pacing their return to restaurants, these favourite dishes are still available on Nobu London’s takeaway menu, which launched during lockdown. A first for the long-standing location, the restaurant responded to customer demands by putting together a selection of items, including sake and wine, available for collection at the restaurant or delivery via Deliveroo and Supper. All areas of the building are being regularly and thoroughly cleaned, with all staff observing frequent handwashing and the highest possible standards of cleanliness. Smart steps have been put in place to limit contact, such as innovative QR code menus - guests simply scan the code and view the full menu on their phone or other smart device - and one-touch menus for each customer’s use only. The team themselves are also being supported with daily wellness and temperature checks and proper protective equipment to allow them to get to and from work safely. From guiding customers step-by-step through ordering a food delivery, to sharing recipes to recreate Nobu dishes at home, keeping in touch with customers was hugely important to the Nobu team. “We have guests that we’ve been serving since the doors first opened, where we know several generations of their family,” said Andrew Milne, Director of Operations. “When you see the same people every week for several decades, you can’t allow that to slip away, even during a pandemic.” Staying connected with their patrons also helped Nobu London prepare to reopen its doors in July. By the time the Government announcement was made the Nobu team had already caught up with numerous regulars, welcomed new customers through its delivery partners and even supported birthday, graduation and anniversary celebrations held at home through its takeaway business. “We had a good sense of how our customers were doing,” said Andrew. “We knew what they’d missed out on, what they were looking forward to and, most importantly, how we could help them feel safe enough to dine out again.” While safety was certainly a priority for returning Nobu customers, experience was a close second. For something different, Uber is launching a London commuter boat service in partnership with Thames Clippers. Rebranded Uber Boat, the 20-strong fleet will cover trips up and down the River Thames from Putney to Woolwich from 23 piers across London. The service will allow Uber users to book a river journey through the app and board using a QR code on their phone. Uber Boat will be following all possible hygiene and social distancing rules, including reduced capacity and that passengers must wear face masks - in line with Transport for London (TfL) guidance. The San Francisco company has also confirmed that it will be charging passengers the same price for booking a boat as it does for their cabs. Uber has already got bikes and food deliveries covered although their taxis are grounded as they await a London licence to be reissued. Uber’s regional general manager for northern and eastern Europe – Jamie Heywood, said in a statemen: “Many Londoners are looking for new ways to travel around the city, particularly when they start commuting back to work. Later this summer we will launch the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers in London as a means for people to arrange travel on the river and road, all through the Uber app.” Delighted by the partnership, Thames Clipper’s co-founder and CEO Sean Collins further remarked, “The new partnership sees Thames Clippers and Uber, who both pride themselves on safety, reliability, and comfort, come together. Ahead of the ambitious redesign of prestigious Grosvenor Square

Be part of the conversation

G

rosvenor Square, London’s second largest garden square is set for redesign ahead of its 300th anniversary. Located just a short walk from Oxford and Bond Street, the green space is cherished by residents, workers and visitors alike as a calm oasis to escape the hustle and bustle of central London. In London’s densely populated capital, the relevance of green spaces is more important than ever before, not only are these spaces essential to health and wellbeing, they play a vital part in meeting the challenges of the climate emergency currently faced. The ambitious redesign of Grosvenor Square aims to rethink the role of an urban square at a time of climate crisis, transforming it into a thriving place for people and planet. Grosvenor Britain & Ireland are inviting Londoners to be a part of the redesign of the Square through a series of virtual experiences and Big Topic Talks. The series aims to help Londoners of all ages understand green spaces and the issues affecting them better. The Big Topic Talks series will host a variety of speakers including Dan Raven-Ellison, National Geographic Contributor and

Gorgeous gardens to visit this summer Many gardens have now reopened to the public for summer. Hannah Stephenson selects some of the best.

S

till short of things to do this season? Why not visit some of our most glorious gardens, which have reopened to the public. They all detail the Covid-19 safety measures they’ve put in place on their websites. Most require pre-booking tickets (check websites for specific details) and all have regulated social distancing – take a mask to be on the safe side too.

Here are some of our favourites…

Witley Court and Gardens, Worcestershire (english-heritage.org.uk) Witley’s romantic gardens are full of delights. A spectacular lake, vast fountain of Perseus and Andromeda, and colourful French parterre are among the highlights. In summer, the East Parterre at Witley Court is spectacular and includes variegated pelargoniums, ageratum, evening primrose (Oenothera) and verbenas. This summer, take the family on a free fun adventure quest with an historical twist. Pre-booking essential for timed tickets. 40 SEPTEMBER 2020

The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Corn (heligan.com) With some 200 acres of garden and estate, you simply can’t do all of Heligan in one visit – so if you’ve only got a day, seek out summer highlights. An incredible 15 acres of wildflower meadow has been planted, featuring cornflowers, corn chamomile, poppies and corn marigolds, to create a stunning visual backdrop, perfect for butterflies and bees. Families are invited to pick up a ‘Heligan Summer’ booklet from the ticket office before setting off. Pre-booking essential for timed tickets. Wightwick Gardens, Wolverhampton, West Midlands (nationaltrust.org.uk) Comprising 17 acres, this might not be the biggest National Trust garden but it certainly packs a punch in the style stakes, thanks to 20th century Arts and Crafts garden designer, Thomas Mawson. The dominant design feature of the garden is its ‘rooms’ – areas marked by clipped yew hedges or terraces, giving the space a wide variety of different feelings.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (kew.org) The world famous botanical gardens opened doors to visitors in June. They’ve now reopened the glasshouses too, so you can admire an array of tropical treasures, desert species and more in the Palm House, Temperate House and Princess of Wales Conservatory. In a final flourish to Kew Gardens’ summer landscape, a bespoke botanical sculpture – created by the winning duo from the acclaimed Netflix television programme, The Big Flower Fight, will be on display in August. Pre-booking essential for timed entry. Toilets, shops and some outdoor food facilities are currently open and screened regularly. Check website for details.

Tickets are released on Fridays for the following week and pre-booking for timed visits is essential. The Manor House remains closed until further notice.

Montalto Estate, Co. Down, Northern Ireland (montaltoestate.com) The trails and gardens within this magical estate have now re-opened, so visitors can explore a wealth of features – including the cutting garden made up of annuals, biennials, perennials and shrubs, the formal garden with its defined geometric shapes and stunning views of Montalto Lake and boathouse, and the alpine garden, with its impressive collections of plants. The trails and gardens are currently open Wed-Sun but all visitors must pre-book tickets online. Access to some gardens may be restricted due to events. 42 SEPTEMBER 2020

RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey (rhs.org.uk) Visitors to the jewel in the crown of the RHS gardens will be able to enjoy its summer highlights, including sizzling dahlias and tropical banana plants in its exotic garden, which showcases plants that have a tropical look but flourish outdoors in a typical UK summer climate. Don’t forget to stroll along the mixed borders for a riot of summer colour and surround yourself with lavender on the viewing mount. Pre-booking essential for timed tickets, card transactions only on site. Glasshouse, alpine houses, learning centre and library and advisory desk remain closed.

Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, South Yorkshire (english-heritage.org.uk) Spectacularly restored to their full Victorian splendour, the 15 acres of gardens at Brodsworth are home to a collection of grand gardens in miniature, filled with colourful seasonal plantings and displays. Stroll through the statue walks and the beautiful wild rose dell, with over 100 varieties of historic rose. You can also admire period bedding plants in the Flower Garden, including cannas and gingers for dot planting, with salvia, gazania, ageratum and verbena. Pre-booking essential for timed tickets. House and play area remain closed. A familyfriendly summer explorer quest is taking place throughout summer.

Wollerton Old Hall Garden, North Shropshire (wollertonoldhallgarden. com) Set around a 16th century hall (not currently open to the public), Wollerton Old Hall incorporates a formal modern garden on an old site covering four acres. Its garden rooms are beautifully planted with stunning perennials and offer some terrific design ideas. The garden is famous for its salvias, clematis and roses and the clever use of colour, form and scale. The main perennial border in late summer is still awash with colour, so don’t miss it. Currently open Thursday, Fridays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays. Pre-booked tickets essential.

Arley Hall and Gardens, Cheshire (arleyhallandgardens.com) Arley Hall and its glorious gardens have provided the setting for some familiar TV series, including Peaky Blinders, Antiques Roadshow and Great British Garden Revival. Head for the herbaceous border, its best known feature, which boasts some spectacular planting, then wander through the pleached lime avenue of trees and lose yourself within The Grove. There are many different areas within its eight acres of formal gardens, as well as an arboretum and woodland walk. The hall remains closed. Tickets are released on Fridays for the following week and pre-booking for timed visits is essential. The Manor House remains closed until further notice.

The Royal Parks unveils birthday gift to the

I

n celebration of the NHS’ 72nd birthday, The Royal Parks charity has created two special flowerbeds in front of Buckingham Palace, containing 45,000 white and blue flowers. Measuring 12 metres by 5 metres, each flowerbed spells out NHS in giant letters that can be enjoyed by park visitors, and even viewed from the sky. The special flowerbeds are located in the iconic setting of the Memorial Gardens, that is part of St James’s Park, and sits in front of Buckingham Palace. Every summer, the Memorial Gardens are planted with 22,500 plants grown in the Hyde Park Nursery. One of the plants included in the annual design is scarlet geraniums, selected to match the tunics of The Queen’s Guard at Buckingham Palace. This year marks the first variation of the design in decades. Mark Wasilewski, Park Manager at St James’s Park, explains: “We believe it’s the first change of design to the Memorial Gardens in decades, perhaps since the First World War when the flowerbeds were planted with potatoes. We wanted the flowerbeds to replicate the colours of the NHS, so the letters are formed of white begonias, against a blue background of drought resistant succulents. Happy birthday to the NHS

and thank you for everything you do.” Rob Dowling, Assistant Park Manager at St James’s Park, said: “We have a long tradition of commemorating events and major occasions through the use of carpet bedding. For the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, a 3D crown was planted in St James’s Park, but this is the first time we have done this in the Memorial Gardens. We hope it demonstrates how special the NHS is to The Royal Parks and is just a small token of our appreciation for all their hard work and dedication this year, and every year.” The NHS flowerbeds, will be in situ until mid-September. Following this, the Memorial Gardens will be filled with 50,000 yellow wallflowers and red tulips, ready for next spring. royalparks.org.uk

Monaco Yacht Show A Superyacht Industry Support Show. September 23 – 26, 2020, Port Hercule, Monaco

46 SEPTEMBER 2020

T

he Principality of Monaco and Informa have announced a secure, not-for-profit event in 2020 They have confirmed they are working together to deliver an intimate, not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule in September 2020, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks. The proposed event will employ the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and be dedicated to supporting the speedy recovery of the industry post COVID-19, providing an invaluable platform for designers, brokers, shipyards and other key players within the yachting industry to connect with their customers and share ideas in a safe environment.

Return & Recovery post the COVID-19 Pandemic

Like most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on the international yachting community, with many businesses temporarily closed and staff furloughed, and the usual annual cycle of industry activity severely disrupted. As countries and locations around the world gradually relax lockdown restrictions and ease control measures, it is imperative that the superyacht community is supported in every way possible to help the industry return and recover safely and quickly.

The 30th Monaco Yacht Show in September 2020

“The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020”

With this in mind, The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020. This year’s Monaco Yacht Show is scheduled from 23 to 26 September. With control measures steadily being relaxed in Monaco, around Europe and internationally, on current course and speed, this should allow for a carefully staged event to still take place this year. Therefore, it is our intention to retain these dates for the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show and work with suppliers and local authorities over the coming weeks to confirm full details of the event. In the spirit of the history and position of the event within the superyacht industry, the 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be run on a not-for-profit basis, recognizing the challenges facing everyone post the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, providing direct support to all attendees and exhibitors from across the market. Whilst the intimate nature of the 2020 event will prioritize the safety of participants, both Informa and the Monaco Principality are committed to ensuring the quality of the event and show experience is maintained for everyone. Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets (organiser of the Monaco Yacht Show) said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on all industries, not least the international yachting community. As we move to the other side of the pandemic, all parts of the industry need to work collaboratively to ensure a speedy return and recovery. We are playing our part by hosting a not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in 2020, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, meet with customers and start to rebuild positive momentum.” monacoyachtshow.com

ndy Warhol (1928–87) was one of the most recognisable artists of the late 20th century, yet his life and work continue to fascinate and be interpreted anew. A shy, gay man from a religious, migrant, low income household, he forged his own distinct path to emerge as the epitome of the pop art movement. This major new exhibition at Tate Modern – the first at the gallery for almost 20 years – offers visitors a rare personal insight into how Warhol and his work marked a period of cultural transformation. Drawing upon recent scholarship, it will provide a new lens through which to view this American icon. Featuring over 100 works from across his remarkable career, the show will shed light on how Warhol’s experiences helped shape his unique take on 20th century culture, positioning him within the shifting creative and political landscape in which he worked. While he is best known for his iconic paintings of Coca-Cola bottles and Marilyn Monroe that held up a mirror to American culture, the exhibition will emphasise recurring themes around desire, identity and belief that emerge from Warhol’s biography. Key works from the pop period, such as Marilyn Diptych 1962, Elvis I and II 1963/1964 and Race Riot 1964, will be examined in relation to contemporary issues around American culture and politics, while Warhol’s limitless ambition to push the boundaries of media

will be represented via his famous Screen Tests 1964–6 and a recreation of the psychedelic multimedia environment of Exploding Plastic Inevitable 1966. Visitors will also be able to experience Warhol’s floating Silver Clouds 1966 installation, initially meant to signal his ‘retirement’ from painting in favour of moviemaking. He famously stated that ‘good business is the best art’: the exhibition will look at how Warhol’s forays into publishing and TV, as well as his interest in club culture. The exhibition will emphasise his skill as a painter and colourist with a room dedicated to the largest grouping of his 1975 Ladies and Gentlemen series ever shown in the UK. These striking portraits depict figures from New York’s transgender community, including iconic performer and activist, Marsha ‘Pay it no mind’ Johnson - a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Warhol’s final works of the 80s, such as the poignant Sixty Last Suppers 1986 – on view at Tate Modern for the first time in this country – will be considered in relation to the artist’s untimely death as well as the unfolding HIV/AIDS epidemic, which ultimately went on to impact the lives of many in his close circle. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, as well as an extensive programme of public talks and film screenings with exclusive new merchandise collections in the gallery shops. Is Art ‘RISKY Business’?

rt does more than brighten a living space. The art market has become one of the hottest new investment crazes in recent years. An Art Basel annual report estimates global art market sales reached over 68 billion in 2019. Painting and sculpture collectors frequently buy pieces with an eye towards adding to their investment portfolio. Like stocks and bonds, art can increase in value. If an up-andcoming artist goes on to a successful career, the cash value of their work will skyrocket.

Art RULES… the art market follows rules all of its own

One major perk of art as an asset is that its value doesn’t rise or decline with the stock market. Even if your stocks aren’t performing well, your art investment may be doing great – good news for the savvy investor who wants to diversify a portfolio and minimise risk. And ideally art will continue appreciating in value over time.

First Steps…

Firstly, decide how much money you’re happy spending.

Secondly, consider the aesthetic pleasure first and the financial benefits second.

“One major perk of art as a asset is that it’s value doesn’t rise or decline with the stock market and the good news is you can start your investment journey from under £1,000””

Browse sites like Artnet and online auction houses like Sotheby’s to get a sense of how the market works, but the easiest route is to talk to a reputable gallery who will help guide you on your art journey. Since this is the information age, plenty of high-end artwork sells online and collectors are becoming increasingly comfortable 50 SEPTEMBER 2020

using this platform to buy art. But before you buy over the Internet, make sure you’re purchasing from a legitimate gallery, dealer, or investment firm.

Art is non-liquid

Art and real estate go hand in hand and can take much longer to sell but are good solid investments…plus, you get so much more enjoyment from them. Here are some signs why the reward might outweigh the risk. • You simply enjoy art. • It can be an extension of your personality and taste. • It brings ambience, character and points of interest into your home. • It lasts for generations and can be passed through the family for a lifetime of enjoyment. • Starting your investment journey can be daunting at first but talk to reputable gallery who are there to help guide you so you feel well equipped for an incredibly rewarding journey. Local Artist Launches New Collection of prints and cards in her LIPS Series

O

ne might be an independent woman of the millennium, but is she a feminist? Namoh’s LIPS collection is an exploration of the true essence of a woman, by looking at the women who have influenced the life of the artist. Some are real, some are fictional, and some mythological. The quotes used are sometimes their own, and sometimes the artist’s interpretation of what she believes they might have said. One common thread running through the series is that they are all strong women. Isn’t that the basic criteria of being a feminist? All in all, the artist has tried to capture the essence of their character in the most simple and poetic way possible. Namoh offers an eclectic collection of fun, light hearted and sometimes reflective, designer artwork. Her life and experiences find a creative outlet for London based artist’s work. Namoh’s products and designs embrace a range of emotions, styles and artwork. We believe ‘art’ is a process. It starts with a thought, becomes a reality and finally, interacts with its owner and becomes part of the environment. It is a journey that keeps on giving. And It is this journey that we love taking every day. namoh.co.uk

National Garden Scheme launches

Chelsea Flower Show Special Collection for Virtual Garden Visits campaign

C

helsea Flower Show is the most prestigious shop window for garden design in the world. Careers are launched by gaining that elusive gold medal for a show garden. For visitors they are the big draw; fascination with the huge cost, a sense of fantasy, and admiration for the prodigious skill required to create something so accomplished in such a short time. After Chelsea is over, often the only way people can enjoy the

54 SEPTEMBER 2020

work of the designers is by visiting gardens they have created which open for the National Garden Scheme. With no show this year, we are celebrating these talents with virtual visits to memorable gardens designed by four of the most distinguished current designers – two of which are their own – and one garden designed for this year’s show. Together the five have amassed an impressive 29 Chelsea gold medals between them.

Tom Stuart-Smith, who lives in Hertfordshire, is one of the most admired garden designers in the world who in the early-2000s created a series of the iconic Chelsea show gardens, winning 8 gold medals and three best in show awards in the process. Tom’s career revolves around the garden he has created at his Hertfordshire home The Barn. In a gorgeous film vignette he takes us on a tour and talks about his work. Similarly, another favourite designer, Bunny Guinness, winner of six Chelsea gold medals and popular panellist on Radio Four’s Gardener’s Question Time, takes us on a tour of her Cambridgeshire garden where sustainability and self-sufficiency are the watchwords. Julie Toll and Marcus Barnett both have similarly enjoyed Chelsea success to help boost their now international reputations as designers. Their contrasting ability to blend modern and contemporary with a more traditional country garden style are brilliantly shown off at the Manor House, Ayot St Lawrence designed by Julie and 15 The Avenue, Cheam, designed by Marcus. And in celebration of the National Garden Scheme’s relationship with nurses we feature what would have been one of the stars of this year’s show, the Florence Nightingale Garden: a Celebration of Modern Nursing; designed by Robert Myers, which we will now have to wait until the 2021 Chelsea Flower Show to enjoy. The film is introduced by the President of the Florence Nightingale Foundation, Baroness Watkins, who explains the link between Florence Nightingale and the National Garden Scheme, before designer Robert Myers explains the inspiration for his garden and reveals some of the key features. The films are part of the National Garden Scheme’s Help Support Our Nurses campaign which it has been running while all its gardens are closed. The charity is

sharing weekly portfolios (released each Thursday) of films made in their gardens by owners who open and inviting people to make a donation when they watch in a bid to make up the huge funding gap for nursing and health charities that the closure of the gardens has created.

Fashion & Beauty

From Audrey Hepburn in the Fifties to Kim Kardashian in the 2010s, these are the women whose style summed up an era.

STYLE ICONS WHO DEFINED THE FASHION OF A DECADE

64 SEPTEMBER 2020

1960s: Twiggy

There’s no doubt Twiggy’s aesthetic sums up the 1960s: super slight, with a pixie crop and voluminous lashes. Twiggy - real name Lesley Lawson - was everything you’d want from a supermodel of the time, dressed head-to-toe in mod outfits from stripy dresses to the ever-present miniskirt (Mary Quant reigned supreme).

These are some of the most stand-out icons from the 1950s to today...

1950s: Audrey Hepburn

With her sleek black Givenchy dresses, strings of pearls and big sunglasses, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast At Tiffany’s is still one of the most fashionable characters in film. By its release in 1961 though, Hepburn was already a style icon in her own right, known for sleek silhouettes with nipped in waists, strapless dresses and a love of preppy collars. It’s an aesthetic that has proved timeless, and endlessly inspiring.

“There’s no doubt Twiggy’s aesthetic sums up the 1960s: super slight, with a pixie crop and voluminous lashes” 1970s: Bianca Jagger

Bianca Jagger was a Seventies it-girl, known for her association with the New York club, Studio 54, which was frequented by the likes of Andy Warhol and Elton John. Jagger was often seen in perfectly tailored suits with flared trousers, showing suiting wasn’t just for men, but also played with sequins, feathers and excellent hats. Born in Nicaragua, she shot to fame after marrying Mick Jagger and was known for her glamorous, party-girl life. Arguably Jagger’s most iconic moment came in 1977, when she mounted a white horse in Studio 54 on her 34th birthday. She did so in classic style: with blown-out hair and a slinky, off-the-shoulder dress. SEPTEMBER 2020 65

Fashion & Beauty

“Jagger was often seen in perfectly tailored suits with flared trousers, showing suiting wasn’t just for men, but also played with sequins, feathers and excellent hats”

66 SEPTEMBER 2020

1980s: Diana Ross

In all honesty, Diana Ross was a defining icon of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. She’s such a style chameleon she’s managed to adapt to each era, championing trends while keeping her own signature brand of glamour. Ross is arguably best known for her Eighties fashion though, which was full of shoulder pads, glitter and big hair.

2010s: Kim Kardashian

Love her or hate her, you can’t deny the impact Kim Kardashian has had on fashion. There are so many trends we can thank the Kardashian/Jenner clan for, spearheaded by Kim. She helped bring bicycle shorts to the fore, along with fancy athleisure wear, skintight dresses and an obsession with neutral tones and colour blocking. Whatever she wears is watched by eagle-eyed fans and retailers - so much so, Kardashian won a lawsuit against fast fashion brand Missguided USA last year, arguing it was “notorious” for “knocking off” the designer clothes she wore. We’re now in a new decade, which begs the question: is there space for a new style star to emerge and dominate the 2010s? Only time will tell.

1990s: Kate Moss

The fashion of the Seventies and Eighties was all about maximalism, but this all changed in the Nineties. Supermodel Kate Moss represented a more low-key, grungy kind of glamour, wearing a slew of jeans, spaghetti straps and barely-there slip dresses. This wasn’t an era of sparkles and sequins - instead, Moss become synonymous with the so-called ‘heroin chic’ trend: being super skinny and having that ‘just got out of bed’ look.

2000s: Rihanna

Nowadays, we know Rihanna as a red carpet powerhouse, and as the creative director of Fenty, making her the first black woman to run a major luxury house under LVMH. Back in the 2000s, Rihanna was still a fashion icon, but in a very different way to today. Instead of forging her own path, she pretty much wore every trend of the decade. Red carpet events appeared to be an exercise in Noughties fashion box-checking, from low-rise jeans to babydoll dresses and lots of ruched satin. This was before Rihanna found her fashion ‘voice’, but in the Noughties, we were all copying her. SEPTEMBER 2020 67

HAIR TRANSPLANT BY DR MARK TAM regardless of the direction of the wind. Prior to your procedure, you will have the opportunity to discuss circumstances in which a cow-lick or rapid change of direction is undesirable, or counter productive to your hair’s coverage.

HIGHER DENSITY WITH CUSTOMISED RECIPIENT SITES

D

“A receding hairline can age a person’s face while some may feel it can get them feeling ‘down’”

r Tam is a Diplomat of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He graduated with Bachelor of Medicine, at the University of Southampton. He is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery. He holds a full registration with the General Medical Council with a Licence to Practice. Dr Tam is experienced specifically in the field of FUE Hair Restoration and he has worked in various reputable clinics and private practices in London, UK and abroad. This enabled him to refine his techniques in FUE surgery, also earning him the Phideas award for his work. Dr Tam also recently been voted best hair transplant surgeon in London (Doctors Choice Award Hair Transplant Surgeon City Winner: London). A receding hairline can age a person’s face while some may feel it can get them feeling ‘down’. While there are medications and non-surgical therapy available to stop further hair loss, it does not restore what was lost. A hair transplant will be able to restore the areas of lost hair and is a longer-lasting solution to the problem of hair loss.

NATURAL-LOOKING RESULTS THROUGH NATURAL DIRECTION

Which direction is your hair pointing towards? Forward, to the left, or is there a slight change of direction on the right? Dr Tam follows your natural hair direction as much as possible; because he knows that it’s only by following your biological direction that the most naturally looking hairline can be achieved – 68 SEPTEMBER 2020

When it comes to creating recipient sites for your grafts, one can use generic surgical tools, but since it is essential to match the size of the site as close as possible – both to the size of your grafts and even to the depth of the grafts – only a custom made incision tool can satisfy such necessity. To ensure the closest match, an optimal one, Dr Tam hand-cuts each and every single one of the blades he uses, himself. Not only will the site created by these custom blades fit your grafts perfectly, it also means that more incisions can be made in a given area without additional injury, enabling a higher density. In short, the final result is a denser hairline to look at in the mirror.

MINIMAL SIGNS OF THE FUE PROCEDURE

One of the keys to minimizing visible signs of the FUE procedure in the donor area, lies in the minute size of the surgical punch used, combined with an appropriate spacing between follicles. The results are clear: minimal signs of scarring at the donor sites, allowing you the freedom to adopt various hairstyles, be it long or short. Donor area healing is subject to individual healing characteristics. You may still see signs of FUE if you shave your hair off completely. Stunning Bags From

Marc Ella LONDON

E

ven her pram is classy. Across from me is a casually, yet stylish and smartly dressed woman. I’m meeting Marcella Polzer, founder of accessory label Marc Ella London , at a juice bar in Battersea to get the inside scoop on how she took the leap to start her own business. Her entrepreneurial story begins in 2014. Daughter of an entrepreneur, Marcella found herself in a place she never thought she’d end up in: Insurance. “I don’t think anyone grows up dreaming about working in insurance; as a girl I didn’t even know what it was,” Marcella says, sipping her Energizer juice. “I loved my job, but knew that I had to take the leap at some point and now was as good a time as any.” Marcella went on to launch Marc Ella London — an affordable luxury accessories brand, mainly focusing on handbags. But it wasn’t pre-determined: “Back then, I took a good chunk of time out of my diary to generate ideas and prioritise them. I remember sitting at a restaurant with my husband, trying to cut down a list of 30 ideas to 5.” Today, Marcella has designed more than 90 products, all the while juggling family life. She takes her inspiration from the London scene, her travels across the world, but also family and nature: “I want to create products that are as versatile as they are fashionable. For me, it is a statement of freedom—of the independent woman, always on the move.” I look across the table and see her bag and instantly know what she means; she has an adorable Monty bag sitting next to her (seen above). It’s a bucket bag, and has a soft, origami-like construction. “It’s not just a bucket bag, it can be collapsed or even rolled up, which is perfect for the world traveler and mum alike,” Marcella

explains. The Monty bag, it turns out, is named after her newborn son, who is now 5 months’ old. She also has a 3-year old daughter, a dog, and lives together with her husband in London. I wonder how she does it: “I am as ambitious on the family front as I am in business, if not more. Ultimately, both my family and my business give each other the flexibility so that I can pursue both,” Marcella says. We are both long done with our juices. As we both get up to leave, I can’t help but think what’s next for Marcella and Marc Ella London. She leaves the cafe effortlessly, with her stylish, uniquely recognisable pram, onto her next mission. Yes, that’s what it is… she’s a woman on a mission. Time will tell us what she’ll have been up to next. Browse the Marc Ella London collection and buy online at marcellalondon.com Instagram: marc_ella_london_official

Aged just five she told her school teacher she was going to be a wallpaper designer and that’s exactly what she did after graduating from Leeds College of Art in 1997 with a BA (Hon’s) in Surface Pattern and Textile Design. Fast forward, and after 18 years as Head Stylist and Design Manager for British wallpaper house Graham & Brown, Nina has now gone solo. Alongside husband Paul, an industry expert who spent 16 years at the helm of Graham & Brown’s technical team, Nina launched Woodchip & Magnolia with a determination to do things her own way. Her vision to bring together her creativity with Paul’s technical know-how have made Woodchip & Magnolia unique in the pioneering way they use traditional design skills in a digital world. Freed from the deadlines and seasonal launches most design houses adhere too, Nina can launch the designs she loves when the mood takes her. Her designs are available to order the minute they are unveiled online. With a determination to protect the environment at the heart of their business, Woodchip & Magnolia manufacture all their own wallpaper and fabrics in-house so their business remains as eco-friendly and sustainable as it possibly can be. They work with artists they love and boast unique ranges, including a stunning collection of wallpapers and velvets from vintage style queen Pearl Lowe – their wallpapers now hang in the bedrooms of supermodels, five-star hotels and legions of family homes. HOME & GARDEN

From ambitious building projects to timely tidying up, Luke Rix-Standing looks at how to boost the value of your property.

Adding Value To Your Home

K

een to add value to your home? Whether you’ve just moved into a decrepit bedsit, or have lived in a mansion for years of domestic bliss, there is still plenty of mileage to adding value to your property. Doing so could help improve your own quality of life while you’re still in the property (if buyers find something appealing, odds are you might too), and keep you well placed on the property ladder, regardless of whether you’re currently looking to sell. From five-year plans to on-the-day dust-ups, here’s seven ways to add value to your home...

Loft conversion

Perhaps the gold standard of home improvements, loft conversions are not for the faint of heart, but can come with major domestic and financial rewards if done well. Adding square footage is a guaranteed value-boost, while the market fixation with number of bedrooms means that adding one can practically ensure a hefty payday when it comes to selling. “The average loft conversion costs around £40,000,” says Chris Smith, regional director at estate agents Yopa, “but can increase your property value by an estimated 21%. They’re usually more of a long-term strategy, so you might not see all the money back if you sell immediately.” Loft conversions are not cheap - and not suitable for every property of course - but they often perfectly prove that old adage, 94 SEPTEMBER 2020

that you have to spend money to make money.

Brush up on kerb appeal

First impressions matter, and putting your best foot forward is key to getting customers through the door. “We estimate that simply by improving your property’s ‘kerb appeal’, with a freshly painted exterior, clean windows, a tidy driveway and a new front door, can boost the value of a property by up to 10%,” says Smith. “The outside of your property is the first thing potential buyers will see, both when browsing online and in person at a viewing.” On modern properties, buyers may probably expect double glazing - a savvy way to save on your energy bill in the meantime - along with up-to-date security and draught-proofing.

Go for open-plan living

Open-plan living has been in vogue for some years now, and it’s clearly not going anywhere anytime soon. Most modern househunters are looking for spaces that are practical and adaptable, and it seems distinctly old-fashioned to cook your food in one room and then have to transport it to another to eat it. Open-plan living spaces don’t have to be giant, or rectangular - you’re looking to create areas that are connected but distinct. Consider sliding doors or curtains that can pull back during the day, waist or shoulder-high partitions, or doorway-like arches that demarcate your space.

These are the golden rules of open-plan living: separation without isolation; continuity without uniformity.

Refurbish the kitchen

“Conservatories really earn their keep during the winter months, when they provide a portal to the outside world”

“The addition of a traditional British conservatory typically costs around £5,000,” says Smith, “and can increase the value of a property by around 10% when done well. To add real value, make sure your conservatory is fully glazed and blends in with the style of the rest of the property.”

A recent report by Norton Finance mapped out the most expensive home improvements performed by homeowners in their first year in a new property, and kitchen renovation ranked second only to furniture. The centrepiece to so many homes, it’s no surprise that the kitchen commands so much attention both before and after a sale, and a well-designed room can easily pull in extra thousands. “If your budget can only stretch to renovating one room, that room should be the kitchen,” says Smith. “You can cut costs by painting cupboard doors yourself and adding new, fashionable handles.”

Consider any second-hand shop - regardless of what it sells - and consider the price difference between products marked ‘used’, and products marked ‘like new’. This one’s a no-brainer, and just a fresh lick of paint can make pokey rooms immediately more marketable. Your house isn’t new - but it’s new to your potential buyers, and you’ll be doing your bank balance a favour if you can make it look that way from the moment they cross the threshold.

Add a conservatory

Add an extra bathroom

The stars have to align somewhat for conservatories to be sensible investments, but if the cap fits, they can enhance a property with ease. Aside from the necessary financial clout, homeowners will need to ensure proper planning permission, while those with smaller gardens might want to think twice before sacrificing valuable yard space. Though often associated with summer, conservatories really earn their keep during the winter months, when they provide a portal to the outside world, free from the cold, damp and dark.

Redecorate

As with bedrooms, the number of bathrooms appears like a ranking next to your property, and it’s a crucial integer in the valuation equation. Broom closet, pantry, cupboard under the stairs - a small downstairs loo doesn’t take much, and it can be a delightfully canny way to carve profit out of otherwise wasted space. “You can add up to 5% value to your property by adding a second bathroom,” says Smith. “An average bathroom costs £4,500, and according to NAEA Propertymark, 70% of estate agents say an additional loo helps to sell a house.”

“A lot of my work is rooted in the natural world and a country walk can be as inspiring as wandering around a gallery”

ue to popularity, Lara Skinner has updated her agate effect wallpaper collection at Wallsauce. With a passion for embracing textures upon layers and forming collages, Lara’s collection at Wallsauce comprises of intricately detailed agate patterns amongst other precious stone replicas. The sophisticated collection has designs that would create a beautiful feature wall in tranquil bedrooms and contemporary living rooms. Lara has always had a strong interest in art and loves anything involving creativity. Having studied Graphic Design/Illustration at Camberwell College of Art, Lara began her career in designing record sleeves that appeared on the shelves in HMV and Virgin Megastores. Speaking to Lara, she says: “A lot of my work is rooted in the natural world and a country walk can be as inspiring as wandering around a gallery or seeing a new exciting art exhibition. Having recently relocated to Devon, a daily walk on the beach is a must in any weather. The rock formations, geodes and strata are beautiful colour chameleons as the seasons change, with direct sunlight they actually sparkle. I love jewel tones and mixing these into marble/agate designs with lots of gold, it creates a luxury layered story. Geode/ marble/agate patterns emerged in the design world a while ago,

adorning fashion, homeware, soft furnishings etc and they don’t look like disappearing any time soon!” This uber-stylish mural collection is available on a choice of wallpaper materials, including removable wallpaper, which is great for rented homes.
