A Show For Everyone
ince the inaugural performance by the London Symphony Orchestra in September, G Live has gone from strength to strength and this spring’s season is no exception. With visits from world class artists, innovative new companies and a celebrity or two, G Live really does have a show for everyone.
Spring really is a season for exploring new interests and trying something a bit different. If you’ve grown bored of the same old routine why not shake things up a bit and discover a new passion. Think ballet isn’t for you? Think again! On Friday 23 March BalletBoyz will be bringing their new show The Talent to the G Live stage and their raw, masculine energy will be bringing Ballet into the 21st century. The BalletBoyz have taken the traditions of ballet and created a show where the dancers are tattooed and there isn’t a Sugar Plum fairy in sight. Fans of comedy will be excited to know that after sell out shows 12 MARCH2012
from Jimmy Carr, Reginald D Hunter and Stephen Merchant, G Live will be continue to host a wide variety of comedians from Jim Davidson, Paul Merton and Dara O’Briain, as well as monthly Hellfire Comedy Curry Clubs. Every month you’ll have the opportunity to relax with a delicious curry, ice cold Cobra beer and the very latest in up and coming comedy talent straight from the London circuit. G Live is lucky enough to have a multi-adaptable main hall that can handle any kind of music. It’s no surprise to see a world class orchestra one day only to be followed by a standing rock
gig. March holds many surprises with visits from the European Union Chamber Orchestra featuring Julian Llyod Webber, The Osmonds and The Stranglers. Children aren’t forgotten at G Live this spring as there is plenty going on to grab their attention. Our Studio Season continues with the puppet based show Diving Belle in March and followed by the delightfully feathery The Ugly Duckling in April. In the same month G Live will be magically transformed as the Russian Ice Stars turn the main stage into an ice rink and perform everyone’s favourite fairy tale Cinderella on Ice. If you’re pondering how to get
your son interested in the theatre then Science Museum Live! might be the ticket. Featuring dangerous demonstrations and extraordinary experiments this show is guaranteed to have jaws dropping on the floor and your kids thinking you are the coolest parent….ever! So why not impress your friends with your knowledge of the arts by visiting G Live for an evening’s entertainment? With such a wide variety of shows there’s bound to be something to catch your eye and tickle your fancy.
For more information or to make a booking call 0844 7701 797 (10am6pm, Mon-Sat) or visit the website at www.glive.co.uk For bookings in person, the Ticketing Sales point and Café-Bar in the Main Foyer will be open from 10am Monday to Saturday; on Sundays and Bank Holidays they will open 90 minutes prior to any performance.

A giant fossilized Megalodon shark tooth, 4-10 million years old 3.5” tall £225. From David Wackett the Guildford dealer in fossils and meteorite fragments.
Exhibitors are already saving special pieces for the fair. Local Guildford dealer David Wackett promises some of the most unusual exhibits ever seen at any antiques fair – rare and important meteriorites and fossils of such visual appeal that collectors now regard them as modern sculpture. Among the most unusual will be a collection of fossilised megalodon teeth. The Carcharocles megalodon shark was the largest shark to ever swim the ocean. Reaching an overall maximum
length of approximately sixty feet, this shark was three times the size of the modern Great White. Today, its only remains are fossilised teeth and they have enormous appeal to collectors. David will also be showing moon rock and pieces from the recent Martian meteorite. Hickmet Fine Art from Petworth will be specialising in bronze sculpture and glass by the most famous artists from the Decorative Arts Movement, including Demetre Chiparus, Emile Gallé, René Lalique, Daum Freres and Josef Lorenzl. Among the most impresive items will be a superb bronze and ivory model of a dancer known as Ayouta wearing the full Ballet Russe costume, by Chiparus, circa 1925.

G Live is a new and prestigious venue built on the site of the old Civic Hall on London Road, home to the original Guildford Antiques Fair until the building was demolished in 2004. The venue, newly opened in September 2011, now with an adjacent Radisson Edwardian hotel, is situated very close to the shopping centre and has a large purpose-built carpark. The fair will be held in the Main Auditorium, which will provide a dramatic blackout environment. G Live also has an attractive modern white marble foyer restaurant and bar for light meals and refreshments.

Capture the Spirit of Box Hill on Camera
Box Hill is famous for its sweeping panoramic views towards the South of England. The Hill, part of the North Downs, has been popular with visitors since the Victorian times and you can embrace the same timeless landscape today. Box Hill enjoys European designation as a Special Area of Conservation and will in July 2012 host part of the Olympic men’s and ladies road cycle race. The National Trust at Box Hill are delighted to launch their first ever photography competition. The competition, which runs until the end of October, will be managed by Box Hill Ranger David Benjamins. One of David’s aspirations for the competition is that entrants will capture the spirit of this unique place in all seasons. “We’re really hopeful that this is the opportunity for people to showcase their photos of Box Hill and to show others how much 26 MARCH2012
fun they have at the place with their friends and family” says David. The competition has two categories for entrants; children up to the age of 15 years, and an adult category for anyone entering over 16 years of age. As well as some fantastic prizes, winning entries will have their photograph included in Box Hill’s 2013 calendar which will be available from the National Trust shop at Box Hill in time for Christmas. David hopes for a wide selection
of images in the competition “anything from close up shots of the wildlife and plants on the hill, to wonderful pictures of people enjoying Box Hill, whatever the weather and whatever the season”.
The competition is open now and will run until the end of October. You can email your photographs, as jpegs and stating which category you want to enter, to boxhillphotos@nationaltrust. org.uk or call David Benjamins on 07770 887673 for more information.
Box Hill is good walking country with flower-sprinkled chalk downland and cool shady woodlands. There’s something for everyone from short circular walks, longer hikes and a natural play trail for children or the young at heart. The Donkey Green is a lovely spot for family picnics and games. Our chalk downland is home to many rare wild flowers and insects, including the Bee Orchid and the vibrant Adonis Blue butterfly. It’s designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). At the top of the hill is the Box Hill Centre where you can join us to experience the colourful Discovery Zone and learn more about the fascinating creatures on the hill, browse around our inspirational shop or have a bite to eat at our servery.

Godfather The
OF BRITISH POP ART
T
his exciting exhibition will be a celebration of Peter Blake’s work featuring iconic prints spanning his career.
Sir Peter Blake is often referred to as the Godfather of British Pop Art, best known for his limited edition prints and the design of the sleeve for The Beatles’ album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Born in Dartford, Kent, Peter Blake studied at Gravesend School of Art before being accepted into the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. Peter Blake became a Royal Academician in 1981, a CBE in 1983 and in 2002 Peter Blake received a knighthood for his services to art. Retrospectives of Blake’s work were held at the Tate in 1983 and Tate Liverpool in 2008. Blake remains as busy as ever in his 80th year; currently working on a new oil painting of St. Martin for St. Paul’s Cathedral (the first new artwork to be commissioned for the Cathedral since William HolmanHunt’s The Light of the World) as well as a series of bookcovers for Penguin amongst many projects. He graduated in 1956, received a Leverhulme Research Award to study popular art, and travelled extensively, drawing inspiration as he roamed. Sir Peter Blake’s fondness for popular culture can be clearly seen in much of his eclectic collages and silk screen prints with images of Marilyn Monroe mixing with the Mona Lisa. Since his emergence in the early 1960s as a key member of the burgeoning Pop Art movement, 28 MARCH2012
reflecting his broad art education, was based on working across media. He has produced collage, sculpture, engraving and printmaking, as well as commercial art in the form of graphics and, notably, album covers.
The Wey Gallery are pleased to announce a solo exhibition of work by Sir Peter Blake to celebrate the artist’s 80th birthday.
The Show Previews on Friday March 30th 6.00pm-8.00pm when you will be able to visit the Peter Blake Art Bus parked outside the gallery, The show will continue until April 13th.
Peter Blake has been one of the best-known British artists of his generation. His 1961 Self Portrait with Badges, in which he stands in his denim jeans and jacket, wearing Converse trainers and holding an Elvis album, is one of the iconic images of the time and is now in the Tate collection, but Peter Blake’s reputation from the outset,
Peter Blake is never particularly critical of the cultural iconography he plays with, just amused. Sgt Pepper exemplifies Blake’s style: among Beatles dressed in psychedelic uniform are Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, and a child wearing a Rolling Stones T-shirt. Of all the various forms of Pop Art, Blake’s is the most affirmative, his humour the most sincere.
Blake’s collages contrast his Pop Art work in their complexity of composition and depth of storytelling . His taste for cut-and-paste techniques does not, like most Dada art, culminate in black humour; Blake is nothing if not light. He opposes nothing and negates nothing but instead basks in the icons of popular culture. His prints show the utmost veneration for Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, the Beatles, and Elvis. If Warhol’s aim was to render culturally salient images meaningless, Peter Blake puts his heroes on a pedestal, paying homage to them with neither irony nor ambiguity.

The Wey and Godalming Navigations run for twenty miles from Weybridge to Godalming through some of Surrey’s most beautiful countryside. With eight pubs along the route and numerous points of historical interest, the Navigations are one of Surrey’s most rewarding leisure resources. The Godalming Navigation was opened in 1764, extending the Wey Navigations a further five miles from Guildford to Godalming, which was then a prosperous industrial centre. This month’s walk upstream along the Navigations towpath takes us from Town Bridge, in the heart of Guildford and the limit of the original seventeenth century Wey Navigation, to St. Catherine’s Hill. From Town Bridge, described in the previous article in this series, the waterway heads towards the first lock on the Godalming Navigation, at Millmead. Immediately south of Town Bridge, the towpath passes The White House, a popular public house with an enviable position by the water on the site of a thirteenth 36 MARCH2012

century mill. Beside the towpath just a little further along stands a bronze sculpture featuring Alice and her sister and a running rabbit. Needless to say, this commemorates Lewis Carroll whose family lived at The Chestnuts, located up Castle Hill in Guildford. He completed Through the Looking Glass (1872) while staying there and he passed away there in 1898. Millmead, an attractive open area with seats, lawn and a pretty footbridge, used to be an industrial site with timber yard and iron works. Overlooking Millmead, the Britannia public house was a Guildford in Bloom winner in 2008. Opposite stands the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Opened in 1965, the theatre has an enviable reputation, with its productions frequently transferring to the West End. Moreover, the theatre’s craftsmen build sets for Glyndebourne, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Chichester Festival Theatre, among others (www.weyriver.co.uk/theriver). ALICE IN WONDERLAND

A281 is Town Mill. The imposing brick edifice can also be seen from the towpath just south of Debenhams. Mills may have operated on this site before the Norman Conquest. In 1624, Henry Smith, a local philanthropist, assigned ownership of the mills to a Trust to provide for the town’s poor. In the eighteenth century the mills took on a secondary function, to provide public water for the town via a pipeline of hollowed logs that fed into a reservoir by Pewley Hill. Fish were farmed in the millpond. Now Town Mill contains an excellent 80-seat studio theatre used by amateur groups and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre for its acclaimed smaller productions. Next door, the Toll House, originally an extension to the Mill, houses the Hydro Turbine Project, which generates enough electricity to power 50 households. A footbridge over Millmead Lock leads to Town Mill and the theatre. Just a little way upstream from the Lock on the non-towpath side can be found Guildford Boathouse (www. guildfordboats.co.uk/rivertrips), accessible from Millmead car park on the A281. Narrowboats can be hired here for waterway holidays. Rowing boats can also be rented. Two touring boats take trips on the river, the 60-seat ‘Harry Stevens’ with an entertaining and informative commentary, and the ‘Alfred Leroy’ which provides dining cruises. For groups, another option for cruising this section of the river is in ‘Swingbridge 1’, run by the Surrey Care Trust from Dapdune Wharf (www.surreycaretrust.co.uk/ Swingbridge_boat_trips_Guildford). Almost immediately after the boathouse, the Navigation makes a brief detour to the east where it flows past the Boatman free house, once the site of another boat-hire business. The water flows under an arched footbridge and round a tight bend to the southwest before heading past the Shalford Watermeadows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The 57 hectares of meadow can be explored via footpaths accessible from the A281. A century ago, when winters were colder, the meadows were also used as a public skating rink (www.weyriver.co.uk/theriver). A footbridge links the meadows with the towpath at the foot of St.
Charles and Ruth Hearst who were proprietors of Leroy’s Boathouse, now Guildford Boathouse, from 1942 to 1962. A short but steep detour up Ferry Lane brings the walker to the ruins of St. Catherine’s Chapel. The chapel was established in the fourteenth century as a chapel-of-ease for the Guildford church of St. Nicholas, providing a more convenient place of worship for those who lived out of the town. From 1308, the site was also used for an annual fair. This fair was immortalised in about 1830 in a painting by J.M.W. Turner, called ‘St. Catherine’s Hill, near Guildford, Surrey’.
PASSING SHALFORD MEADOWS
A picture of it can be seen on the information board beside the ruins. It’s a pleasant spot and on a clear day affords far-reaching views across the valley. According to one tall tale, St. Martha’s church on the top of its hill near Chilworth and St. Catherine’s chapel were built by two giants named, of course, Martha and Catherine. They had only one tool, a huge hammer, which they shared by tossing it across the valley (www. surreyhills.org/The-Surrey-Hills/ Tales-of-the-Surrey-Hills/TheGiant-Sisters).
THE FOOTBRIDGE AT FERRY LANE
From St. Catherine’s Hill, the walker can return to Guildford via Ferry Lane and the towpath or Shalford Meadows. Alternatively, he or she can continue on the towpath as it heads south towards St.Catherine’s Lock.

he 158th Boat Race on 7th April will see oarsmen of six different nationalities competing, as the older, more internationally experienced crew from Oxford take on the younger, heavier Cambridge eight. This year will be the first time for Cambridge and only the second time ever in Boat Race history that the crew will feature only one British oarsman, returning Blue undergraduate Mike Thorp. The only other time this has happened was in 2007 when Oxford President Robin Ejsmond-Frey was the sole Brit in the crew. BOAT RACE undergraduate, Ed Bosson. The crew from Oxford will include three former Lightweight rowers, and is made up of five Brits, two Americans, and individuals from Germany and the Netherlands. The Dark Blues will be coxed by Brit Zoe De Toledo. She will be the first woman to cox Oxford since 2000. Four of the athletes competing this year learnt to row at their colleges at Oxford or Cambridge. Alex Woods and Dan Harvey for Oxford, and Alex Ross
and Moritz Schramm for Cambridge all noviced in their first years at the universities. The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow school friend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford. On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day,
where the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match. The first Boat Race took place at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire and contemporary newspapers report crowds of twenty thousand travelled to watch. The race was stopped soon after the start and, following the restart, Oxford were clear winners. Cambridge wore pink, the colour of Lady Margaret Boat Club (of St. Johns College), who their captain and two other crew members rowed for. Oxford have always worn dark blue. The event was such a resounding success that the townspeople later decided to organise a regatta of their own which duly became Henley Royal Regatta. After the first year, the early Boat Races took place at Westminster in London, but by 1845, when
LOCAL EVENTS
Westminster had become too crowded, the Boat Race moved six miles up-stream to the then country village of Putney. In 1856 the race became an annual event (excepting only the war years). The Modern Boat Race still runs along the same lines but has now become a major international sporting occasion drawing millions of viewers from around the world. The Boat Race course is marked by three classic bends, two in favour of the Middlesex station, on the north bank of the Thames, while the third favours the crew drawn on the opposite Surrey station. In spite of these bends the course is theoretically fair - the start and finish lines are exactly parallel, and in the unlikely event of the crews staying level throughout the race, they will both have covered the magic Boat Race distance of exactly 4 miles 374 yards. The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment. The Finish Line is just a few yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake to witness the action. Enjoy the festival atmosphere of the Boat Race by watching for free from one of the many vantage points along the course. You should be able to find a place to watch on either side of the river along the full length of the course, but particular areas to note are: Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment and Bishops Park (at the

Tea Party
at Fortnum & mason, Piccadilly
I
t was a ladies’s day out for Kate, the Queen and Duchess of Cornwall on an official visit to Fortnum & Mason to mark the store’s renovated restaurant - which has been renamed The Diamond Jubilee Tea Station to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. Laughing and smiling, the visit to the London foodie haven, was as cheerful and relaxed as a royal engagement ever gets. The Queen looked simply delighted to be accompanied for the first time by the two women who will, one day, follow in her footsteps. Arriving in the capital’s bustling Piccadilly, the three ladies were greeted by cheering well-wishers and the jolly sounds of a jazz band. As they entered the department store, which was founded in 1707 and boasts more than three centuries of royal service, they viewed a display of Diamond Jubilee United Services Tins filled with tea, and clotted cream ‘super digestives’ which are sent to 18,000 members of the armed forces to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. The store has been supporting the British military since the Napoleonic Wars, sending parcels filled with comforts from home to its troops. The Queen examined the

tins with great care. ‘They are very robust, aren’t they?’ she said, and then, spotting the industrial-strength Queen Anne tea contained within joked: ‘Yes, they do like the stronger stuff, don’t they.’ She appeared particularly animated as she viewed the range and laughed as she handled a tin of biscuits that played the national anthem. ‘Oh how splendid,’ she remarked. On being congratulated by a member of staff about her jubilee, she replied: ‘Yes, it is coming round rather quickly, isn’t it?’ Kate and Camilla
appeared at the confectionery stand which was piled high with inviting chocolates and upon which a small ‘tasting tray’ of sweets. Camilla was most chatty, asking the staff: ‘So where did you learn the art of chocolate making? Do you still dip your fingers in and have a taste? Some people say they go off it after a while if they work with it.’ Staff confirmed that they had been told only to lay out samples of non-chocolaty goodies in case they melted on the royal visitors in front of the cameras. The two ladies then re-joined the Queen for a taste of high tea -
albeit at 10.30am. More than 150 people, including former members of staff, had been invited to the tea party after which the Queen renamed the store’s restaurant the Diamond Jubilee Tea Station. They were also presented with Fortnum’s hamper, containing champagne truffles and ‘hearty treats for happy hounds’ - the Queen’s corgis, Camilla’s rescued Jack Russell and Kate’s new cocker spaniel, Lupo. Afterwards London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, revealed that the Queen had chatted about the success of his ‘pay and ride’ bicycle scheme. He also said that Kate had thanked him for her wedding present - a tandem ‘Boris Bike’ - which she and William and have been riding around their garden.’They haven’t taken to the streets yet but have been practising in confined spaces,’ he said. A source confirmed that the royal couple have been known to ‘play on it in the garden’. This was the first time that the Queen and the two next Queen consorts have been on an official ‘working’ engagement together. Kate will also join the Queen in Leicester for a royal ‘away day’ while her husband is still on deployment with the RAF in the Falklands.

n the thriving village of West Byfleet, everyone is talking about the new jewellery shop. Brooklands Jewellers is owned and run by three exceptionally talented craftsmen/ jewellers who have previously worked in Hatton Garden (London’s jewellery quarter) for a combined total of nearly one hundred years.
amazing to be able to discuss the details with the actual jeweller and even to see the job at the different stages of its manufacture. As well as this valuable asset, they have a comprehensive and eclectic range of ready made jewellery in stock. This includes some fabulous diamond rings, necklaces and bracelets , most of which have been made in the workshop and are therefore unique. It extends to Nicole Barr silver jewellery and the fashionable candy bling range. There is a very good selection of pearls and they also have the full range of Royal Selangor giftware, solving the problem of christening presents and the like.
They have a fully fitted workshop on the premises which is unique in the area. Between them they have the skill and equipment to manufacture any item of jewellery. They can make anything to your own specific designs and requirements, redesign old jewellery in a more contemporary style or even alter modern jewellery to a more classic style. All the work Repairing jewellery to the highest is done on the premises and it is standard is another forte. They have

a quick turnaround and prices are competitive.
Because of the direct link with Hatton Garden, Brooklands Jewellers can pay the best prices for your scrap gold, silver and platinum. Prices are still high so it really is worth clearing out those old jewellery boxes, drawers and cupboards. They also buy and sell quality watches. Watch repairs are undertaken and watch batteries can usually be fitted while you wait.
Insurance companies are becoming increasingly demanding so the Valuation Service offered is done by a registered valuer and is indisputable. It is refreshing that the fees for this are on a fixed scale and not a percentage of the total which
can lead to inflated valuations. Reassuringly, any jewellery left for valuation does not leave the premises.
All in all, the shop has a contemporary, bright and airy feel to it with a very friendly ambience. Do pay them a visit. It is interesting just to have a look and if you take along your scrap gold as well, you will be pleasantly surprised. You are certainly assured of a warm welcome from Dave, Stewart and Dave.

he vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month's event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven't got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. e magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers' and fashion stylists' cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. e allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe. It's a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. e world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing this year’s Autumn/Winter collections during last month's London Fashion Week. e first lady of British fashion today made her appearance at this season's London Fashion Week. Samantha Cameron graced the front row of the Christopher Kane catwalk show at central London's One New Change shopping centre. e Prime Minister's wife, who is ambassador to the British Fashion Council (BFC), was spotted wearing a Joseph trouser suit and a Jonathan Saunders green shirt. She also sported a pair of wedged black high shoes showing off a small blue tattoo on her right ankle. Mrs Cameron chatted with BFC executives before watching the autumn/winter collection. So who else was taking the front row seats at London Fashion Week? Celebrities from the worlds of sport, music and film watched the Burberry Prorsum show at Kensington Gardens in London. Rap star Will.i.am was there and Hollywood actress Kate Bosworth was over from her native Los Angeles for the event. Former 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant
Holly Valance attended with her property tycoon fiancé Nick Candy. Singer Will Young wrapped up in a cosy cashmere knit.Boxer Amir Khan made up the sportspeople on the front row......along with former athlete Denise Lewis. Stella McCartney’s show proved her one of the most influential designers in the world. Not many had a guest list like this one: Rihanna, Kate Moss, Jamie Hince, Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow – and that was just the seating plan of Stella’s own table. Much table hopping went on as Yasmin Le Bon chatted to Paul Whitehouse, Minnie Driver caught up with Mario Testino, Richard E Grant met Alison Mosshart, Jo Whiley caught up with British singing sensation Katy B – it was a case of who wasn’t there. Topshop Unique always draws a celebrity-packed front row. Alexa Chung looked casual but stylish in classic navy jeans and coat. Girls Aloud singer, make-up entrepreneur and dedicated follower of fashion Nicola Roberts also attended the Topshop Unique show. Actress and designer Sadie Frost also made an appearance at the Vivienne Westwood Red Label show looking summery in salmon pink. At Aquascutumn, singer Dionne Bromfield mingled with One Directon's Harry Styles , and comedian James Corden and his fiancé Julia Carey . Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof supported their friend Henry Holland by sitting in on his House of Holland show. So what we will be wearing this Autumn and Winter? THE W HITE DENTAL COM PAN Y Andrew Murphy, lead dentist at the White Dental Company (which recently opened at 129 Queen’s Road, Weybridge) likens visits to the new practice to flying first-class on a long-haul jet.
“As soon as you come into the practice, we do everything we can to make you feel relaxed and comfortable. Our patients look forward to visiting us.” The White Dental Company’s premises are geared to reduce stress and increase patient comfort. “We want you to know that you will experience professional standards of care, honed by years of on-going clinical training. Every dentist and specialist you will meet here is the best he or she can be at their clinical task. “As well as the reassuring care, we provide creature comforts such as secure buggy parking for parents; equally secure car parking and cycle racks, hot drinks, access to wifi and use of computers and iPads while you wait.” Andrew and his partners recognised some time ago that while clinical care in the UK is second to none, the actual practice of dentistry in Britain lags behind that which patients enjoy in the USA. “In terms of what we do, we’re no different. How we deliver our care, however, could be regarded as old-fashioned. After all, there is no reason why a visit to the dentist should be any different to a visit to any other specialist profession. You want to be comfortable and confident that you are being cared for. That is what drives the way we operate here”
Andrew and his colleagues are dedicated to encouraging the highest levels of dental hygience and maintenance leading to the prevention of problems. All the White Dental Company dentists are agreed that they prefer to encourage an ongoing system of preventative maintenance in patients – regular visits to the hygienist and the training of children in good teeth cleansing techniques – than to start programmes of repair that can be expensive and time-consuming. That said, the White Dental Company team is keen to keep your pearly-whites just that – sparkling and beautiful. Corrective treatments for crooked teeth and teeth whitening programmes are neither expensive or difficult. The practice staff all enjoy seeing patients leave the surgery with beautiful teeth as much as the patients enjoy flashing their brilliant smiles in the mirror each morning. The White Dental Company believes that the excellence of its dental care service has few peers and its helpful facilities for patients are a major step forward for the profession. Come for an initial consultation and see what it’s like to travel at the front of the plane. www.whitedentalcompany.com

The power of teeth straightening...
See your smile not your braces Enjoying perfectly aligned teeth is a pre requisite to improving appearance and confidence. And crooked teeth are no longer something that everyone associates with those awkward teenage years. ABC Dental recognises that more and more adults are opting for treatments to perfect their smile. Not having to shy away from talking or smiling because you’re ashamed of the crooked nature of your teeth can be a struggle to deal with. Having straight teeth is not however just about looking good, moving teeth into perfect alignment helps you to maintain better oral hygiene and is easier to clean, reducing the amount of plaque build up in areas that food can get trapped. If left untreated and neglected, crooked teeth heighten the risk of developing cavities and bad breath. ABC Dental identifies with the need to straighten teeth without 60 MARCH2012

MYTH: Hair extensions Damage your Hair FACT: When hair extensions are applied correctly there is virtually no reason why they would damage your hair, thousands of women have used hair extensions to grow their own hair to a desired length with no adverse effects whatsoever. However, that is not to say everybody's hair is suitable for hair extensions. At Rapunzel the safety of your hair is taken very seriously hence a free consultation is offered along with a complimentary check up appointment. MYTH: You can't have hair extensions if your hair is fine FACT: In fact, many women with fine hair choose to use hair extensions to add extra volume. Extensions can be done in very tiny size to be virtually undetectable . MYTH: You have to dye your hair to the same colour as the extensions. FACT: This would not happen at Rapunzel as every hair colour is kept in stock all of the time. MYTH: People can tell when you are wearing hair extensions FACT: When they are done properly by a skilled Technician, placed in the right places with the correct amount of extensions used & expertly cut in, hair extensions look completely like your own hair and undetectable. MYTH: You can't keep up your highlights & root colour when the hair extensions are in FACT: Actually you can still do highlights, you just work around the extensions. When dying roots the colour can be applied as it normally would. At Rapunzel once you have our extensions in we can look after all your hairdressing needs if you would like us to. MYTH: You can't brush & style easily with hair extensions FACT: As long as the right brush is used (supplied by Rapunzel Ltd), then you can brush right into and through the roots with no damage to your own hair or the extensions. You can also use straightening irons, curling tongs & heated rollers as long as you are careful to avoid the bonds. MARCH2012 63

A
s nail polish sales continue to rise, (surpassing lipsticks as our go-to beauty buy) find out what colours you need to be sporting this Spring/Summer to be bang on trend.
e new season nail colours are in, and nowadays they are as lusted after as the new season it-bag or the latest hemline. We ladies know that the best way to work a trend without having to pay a fortune is to fancy up our fingernails. Nail colours for the Spring/Summer 2012 seem to fall into two strict camps: neon or nude. First up, leading the trend in an ever brilliant mini boxset is Nails Inc. e New Neon & Nude Collection (£22, www.nailsinc.com) brings together three of their best selling nude classics paired with three brand new ultra-bright neons. From the muted mushroom of Porchester Square to the Coral neon of Portobello, this mini polish set is a great way to combine a nude base with neon tips for a colourful unique 'french manicure' look. With nude being the must have nail shade, there are an array of neutral colours popping up to tame our talons. Get a colour that is as close to your natural skin tone as possible for the chicest results. For an affordable take on the trend, Andrea Fullerton Nail Boutique has created 'Matthew' (£4.99, Superdrug stores nationwide).is is a nude baby pink shimmer following on from the desert island texture inspired nails she created at the namesake Matthew Williamson SS '11 show. And if the nude shade you're wearing doesn't excite you as much as the fresh brights, simply press Andrea's new Pearl Nail Studs (£5.99) into semi-wet varnish for timeless elegance. Celebrity favourite OPI also have a library of natural shades (£11, www.lenawhite.co.uk). eir latest softshades collection is inspired by the world renowned New York City Ballet featuring five pretty nude pastel shades to take you from office-chic to stylish evening glamour. 'Barre My Soul' is a beautiful sheer hint of light barely-there caramel and is extremely flattering on paler skin tones. If you want to channel Kate Middleton's subtle naked nail glamour like she did at her wedding day last April, chemical free nail brand Zoya (£11, 01753573423) have brought out ultra long-lasting ladylike muted shades, like the wearable milky lilac Kendal and a silver based soft grey called Carey.
To carry off the pastel colours that have been introduced to steer us seamlessly from winter to spring, Mavala Nail Ambassador Jenni Draper recommends the style be altogether more feminine. "e nail shape should be shorter, round and elegant", she says. I predict that the spearmint green sherbet shade of 'Pistachio' from Mavala's Delicious collection (£4.30 each, 01732459412) to be a huge hit to add a hint of playfulness to your look. ORLY's new 'Cool Romance' Collection (£9.25 each, www.orlybeauty.co.uk) consists of 6 delicate, sophisticated hues that bridge that gap between winter's deep berry lacquers and summer's bright fluoro's. 'Prelude to a Kiss' is a dainty yet dusky pink, which has great staying power and good opaque coverage. e neon trend is almost certainly the result of the big beauty houses. is season's Chanel Le Vernis Spring Collection (£17.50 each, Harrods) is comprised of a trilogy, whose names list the months associated with fine weather. April is a highly luminous wild berry shade, May instill's happiness with an intense pink and June offers us a foretaste of summer with a pastel apricot. Fresh fruit sorbet colours dominate at Yves Saint Laurent with the limited edition N°8 Manucure Couture Duo (£28, available nationwide) comprising of an iridescent pink and coral. Leighton Denny's vibrant and violet 'Maroon Me Knot' (£11, John Lewis) from the Castaway collection is reminiscent of the eye popping tropical colours inspired by the recent Diane von Furstenberg collections; whilst ciaté paint pot in 'pom pom' (£9, www.ciate.co.uk) provides the powerful orange seen on the SS12 Prada and Jonathan Saunders shows. e highly saturated bubblegum pink pigment of Pink Crush (£25, 08700342566) by Fashion designer Tom Ford, is one of my new covetable shades. e intense glossiness of Pink Crush is a definite style statement with Ford commenting that "Perfectly lacquered nails complete your look, whether you have one signature look or you love to transform yourself with color". New silicon-free balm textured Elemis Pro-Radiance Hand & Nail Cream (£22, www.timetospa.co.uk) formulated with Omega 7 and Virgin Plum oil, is the perfect final addition to your manicure routine. It will ensure that you can pull off either the neon or nude talon trend successfully with hydrated hands ■

Big is Beautiful

There are occasions in life when small are adequate, others when big are better and there are some when only big will do. In the nursery trade there are many occasions when only big will do.
or specimen plants. It is these specimen plants that will provide structure within the garden, this cannot be done with small plants alone. A few specimen plants will give instant interest whether in shape or flower, for example it can take years for a cornus controversa, ‘the Wedding Cake’ tree to develop it’s characteristic shape, likewise a small wisteria rarely flowers whereas large ones can often be bought in flower or at least showing signs of having flowered.
When you purchase a new house with an empty garden, or renovating one that is overgrown, it is possible to get colour by planting small trees and shrubs. What you will not be getting, with small plants, is structure and form. By their nature small plants cannot provide maturity, it is only with maturity that plants start to develop their true structure and form.
I am not knocking using small plants; they give interest and enjoyment to those who enjoy plants and gardening. They also provide an inexpensive way of bulking up the planting within a garden. When starting with a clean sheet any good garden design will include at least a few feature 70 MARCH2012
Cupressus
Big plants by their nature are more mature, they provide height, form and character. Many of my customers ask what size of shrub or tree is best for a particular position, which is very difficult to answer. As with many things size is a mix of getting the biggest plant and best balance against cost. A typical example of this is when planting trees. They vary in size from the typical garden centre tree that is 1.5-1.75m tall, usually a stick with very little branching, through to
HOUSE & GARDEN
Liriodendron
trees 5m plus with trunks with a girth of 25-30cm plus and a well developed head. The former will take years to develop its true mature form, whereas the latter you would recognize as a small version of a fully mature tree. It comes at a cost, I do not dispute that the price difference could be ten fold however the age difference could well be twenty years plus. For some of us twenty years is a long time to wait for our garden to mature, so a few selective additions to the garden can be instrumental in providing apparent maturity to the garden. Another occasion when Big is beautiful is when the provision of screening is necessary. Screening is essential in most gardens, whether you are dealing with an empty garden or one that is being rejuvenated, In this day and age screening is becoming ever more important, due to encroaching development, such as new build or extensions, or noise, from roads, industrial units or retail development. Large plants, in the form of trees or shrubs, can provide the solution to these issues of invasive development. Small plants will take years, or even decades, to provide adequate screening, whereas the right big plants will provide bulk which will act as a screen to
visual or audio pollution. The usual choices of plants for screening are conifers and other evergreens; these provide all year round screening which is vital if a sound barrier is required. Where a visual barrier is required a deciduous planting may be equally suitable, depending on the problem. If the screening is required to provide privacy for parts of the garden, this may not be necessary all year round. Generally speaking deciduous plants provide more interest in the garden, evergreens provide all year round foliage but relatively few that grow in this country provide seasonal interest. There are exceptions such as rhododendrons, camellias and magnolia grandiflora which provide significant flowers, but th majority do not. On the other hand it is a common feature for deciduous plants to produce good flowering displays and/or develop striking autumn leaf colours. When you are next making plans for your garden, just remember; BIG is BEAUTIFUL! ‘I’ve never been to a nursery like this before!’ Tucked away on Woburn Hill, opposite St George’s College near Weybridge, you will find the jewel in the crown of Surrey`s horticultural industry. From the outside you look down the long entrance driveway lined with specimen trees and wonder what is inside. Once you have parked and walk through the nursery entrance gates, you enter a world of horticultural inspiration, where the range and quality of plants makes you wonder why you have never previously visited.
‘Where did you find this range of plants?’ We are passionate about everything we do at The Plantation and one thing you will notice immediately is the scale and size of plants on offer compared to a regular garden centre. As keen plantsmen we take pleasure in personally selecting plants from the best growers from all over Europe.
‘I need screening, I am not able to have a solid fence on my boundary and I have a large gap to fill’ With continual building development in the local area we find that our customers frequently ask for high screening and, quite understandably, they don’t want to wait 20 years for the plants to grow. Through our long term production plan we can provide plants of all sizes, small and large. High hedges are another frequent request and again we can provide a wide range of plants, small and large, to suit all requirements, all locations, and all budgets. ‘What else do I need to do the planting?’ From composts, bark mulch and fertilisers to professional tools, tree stakes and wheelbarrows, we have everything you need to undertake your project, including some specialist items not available elsewhere. In addition, our Gavin Jones Garden
Machinery Shop offers a range of high quality garden machinery including major brands such as Stihl , Hayter , Alko , Mitox and Viking. Staffed by qualified and experienced fitters, we offer advice, demonstrations, equipment and spare parts as well as servicing and repairs for most types of garden machinery.
‘How do I get this home and plant it?’ Here at the Plantation we offer a variety of delivery options. We can wrap and pack plants into your own vehicle, deliver them in our delivery van, or for larger trees, deliver them on our lorry, complete with mounted crane. If you feel the plants are too large for you to handle, we also offer a planting service. We will visit your garden, assess the planting area, and then arrange for an all-in service, all backed up with a 12 month guarantee.

At Marshall & Stewart we look at things differently. A bed needs to be supportive, but it also must complement a person’s sleep cycle, only then can the bed induce excellent quality, restorative sleep. When this is achieved correctly,

as it is with the Diamond Collection beds, a person will experience a kind of sleep beyond their wildest dreams. The industry needs to evolve, and we’re happy to be leading the way,” added Mr Cooper. The Diamond Collection beds are categorised by their traditional and contemporary design. The collection’s flagship bed - the Koh-INoor and the Orloff feature superb bases with hour glass springs that are hand-lashed, while the contemporary Cullinan, Florentine, Sancy

All models are layered with lambswool, cotton and horsehair and each mattress is built around an intelligent spring system to provide ultimate comfort. Marshall & Stewart understand that the third of a person’s life spent in bed is the foundation for the two thirds they spend awake. The coverage that followed in the national press may have left grandparents confused, as whilst one paper reported that “Children whose parents divorce must be given access to both sets of grandparents” another informed readers that “Grandparents will not get a new legal right to see their grandchildren as part of an overhaul to family law.” As the law currently stands, the majority of grandparents do not have an automatic right to make an application to the court for contact with grandchildren; they require leave of the court (permission) before they can make an application. There are exceptions to this rule, including where the child has lived with them for three years or if they have the consent of everyone with parental responsibility. In deciding whether to grant the grandparents’ permission to make an application the court will look at the nature of the application, their connection to the child, any risk of disruption to the child, and make a broad assessment of the case. It is only after this hurdle has been

The Government has decided that this extra requirement should remain. It is seen to act as an important safeguard for children and their families as it
Although the Government have stated they have no plans to change the law, it is clear that they are committed to ensuring children have meaningful relationships with family members following separation. The Government support the recommendation that the importance of this relationship should be emphasised in the process of making Parental Agreements, and a child’s relationship with their grandparents should be considered in parenting classes for separating parents. In conclusion, although the law has not been changed the Government’s response is supportive of the important relationship between children and grandparents. This view is frequently mirrored by the Courts who have been increasingly prepared to grant such applications.
