300 boats from all over the UK and around the world are expected at this year’s Great River Race, the 21 mile Thames marathon to find the UK Traditional Boat Champions. The race taking place on 17th September, starts in Docklands and finishes in Richmond. ‘Surrey Jive’ are a dance company that specialise in 1940’s – 1950’s Swing Jive. The dance originates from The Savoy Ballroom, Harlem, New York in the late 1930’s. BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme, Antiques Roadshow will be filming for its 34th series at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, on Thursday, 25th August, 2011. The Spirit of ‘66 Ball is a stylish, themed evening of entertainment and fundraising in aid of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK. The event, now in its ninth year, will be held on Saturday 1st October 2011 at The Hurlingham Club. Epsom Downs Racecourse will once again be opening their gates for the popular Bank Holiday Family Fun Day on Monday 29th August. Two Titles, Two Hundred Fights and Only One Good Hand

stablished in 1876, Fellows auctioneers are auctioning a fantastic 1926 Lonsdale belt belonging to undefeated Welterweight Champion ‘Gentleman’ Jack Hood. As one of the UK’s leading auction houses, Fellows has a history of auctioning boxing memorabilia and in particular Lonsdale belts. In November 2000, Fellows auctioned the Randolph Turpin 1956 Lonsdale Belt for £23,000. It is now Jack Hood’s Lonsdale belt that will grace the auction room and it is sure to raise quite a stir.

Welterweight Division, Hood was never given an opportunity to fight for the World Welterweight Title because of an apparent weakness of the right hand. “Every time I landed a solid right punch an agonising pain shot through my arm” said Hood, ultimately making his achievements all the more impressive. He was therefore forced to seek contestants in the Middleweight Division, yet it was in this division where he found his greatest rivalry, with three memorable contests against the great tactician and future Heavyweight Champion of Great Britain, Len Harvey.

As a professional boxer, Welterweight Champion and pub owner, the life of Jack Hood is one laden with success and achievement. Born in Birmingham in 1902 ‘Gentleman’ Jack was led to a career in boxing through poverty. Upon leaving school and with an eye on working on the railways, at the age of 20, Hood was refused a permanent job after failing, of all things, a medical. A blessing in disguise, Hood found himself in the ring no less than 10 days later, winning the bout and with it the Midland Welterweight Championship. Whilst trying to find his way in boxing, Jack worked at Samuel Heath Brass Founders, who supported him through his early days in the ring. This was the catalyst for a career that spanned until 1934 and although Hood never had a shot at the World Welterweight Title his accomplishments include over 200 professional bouts, one Lonsdale belt, an undefeated six month period fighting in America and a bout ordered by Royal Command of the Prince of Wales.

On 31st May 1926 Hood defeated Harry Mason over a brutal 20 rounds in Holland Park Rink, Kensington, to win the Lonsdale belt and take charge of the British Welterweight Title. He then outpointed Mason once again in a rematch just two months later on 22nd July in the same venue, to retain the

Mancini. At mid-day on Monday 13th February 1928 Hood fought Len Johnson by Royal Command of the Prince of Wales at the famous Blackfriars ‘Ring’. Len Johnson had been scheduled to fight Belgian cruiserweight Fernard Delarge, however, when the then heir to the throne heard this he remarked “I’d prefer to see that Birmingham boxer, Jack Hood. Can’t they match him with Johnson?” Hood received the call from his manager whilst on holiday ‘You’re fighting at the ‘Ring’ on Monday before the Prince of Wales. The money’s good. I’ll see you at the weigh in’ and Hood swiftly caught the train to London. When the fight was all said and done, it was Hood who stood with his hand aloft by outpointing Johnson after the 15 classic rounds.

It then took a further two years for Hood to find someone to challenge him for his British Welterweight Title but on the 25th June 1928 Hood proved to be too good for Alf Mancini, again being victorious on points. Following his initial win and winning his two successful challenges, in line with Lonsdale rules, Hood became legible to keep his Lonsdale belt outright. Hood’s Lonsdale belt is one of the original belts made under the contract of the National Sporting Club, before changes were made to the design by the British Boxing Board of Control in 1936. This belt was made by Mappin & Webb in Birmingham and is cast in 9ct gold with the original enamelled ‘boxers’ design. It is a tremendous example of boxing supremacy and continued success in the most hegemonic of sports. The proudest moment of Jack Hood’s boxing career however, came before his 25th June 1928 Lonsdale belt battle with Alf

Boxing over 200 bouts, winning his first 187 and losing only six demonstrates the depth and success of Jack Hood’s boxing career. When Hood came to retire in 1935 at the age of 32, he was the acclaimed Champion of Great Britain, Europe and the Empire, and he retired as the undefeated and undisputed British Welterweight Champion. It is the champions that people remember and in a sport where few things come easy it took two gruelling fights with Harry Mason and one with Alf Mancini to cement Jack Hood and his Lonsdale belt in boxing history. Hood only fought once more after his retirement in 1935, at an exhibition in 1947 at the age of 44. It was also for his second life as a pub owner where many remember him. His Lonsdale belt was displayed proudly over the bar at the Bell in Tanworth -in-Arden for 32 years where ‘Gentleman’ Jack would reminisce with boxing followers and regulars alike who would come from far and wide to meet the man. When he would be asked about his days as a boxer Jack would always reply with “No regrets, I’d do it all again”. A true champion and a real gentleman, Jack Hood’s stunning Lonsdale Belt will go under the hammer during Fellows’ auction of Silver, Plated Ware, Coins & Medals on Monday 5th September 2011 and has an estimate of £15,000 - £20,000. They will be propelled by over 2,400 enthusiastic leisure rowers and regular racers ranging from barelyteenage Scouts to Italian dragonboat champions. corporations, pubs, youth organisations, police, fire brigades, the armed services, boating and other societies just out to take part and beat the course.

‘Surrey Jive’ are a dance company that specialise in 1940’s – 1950’s Swing Jive. The dance originates from The Savoy Ballroom, Harlem, New York in the late 1930’s. BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will be filming for its 34th series at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, on Thursday, 25th August, 2011. The doors open at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm. Entry to the show is free. This will be presenter Fiona Bruce’s fourth year with the Roadshow and she says, ‘Presenting the Antiques Roadshow is, for me, one of those rare and very lucky coincidences in television when you get to work on a 18 AUGUST2011

s well as being havens for wildlife, wetlands are also crucial for humans, as the thousands of visitors who go to WWT London Wetland Centre each year will testify. The Centre is a tranquil oasis close to the centre of the Capital and just 10 minutes from Hammersmith, but it could be a world way. It provides a space for Londoners to relax and recharge their batteries and to escape from the stress of city living. Humans have been aware of the benefits of wetlands such as rivers, estuaries and marshes for thousands of years. Over the centuries people have chosen to live close to wetlands for the clean water they provide, as well as the raw materials they generate which are used for food, clothing and housing. People today may no

longer be so conscious of the benefits that wetlands offer in these respects but they still value them for their scenic beauty, their wildlife and as places to walk and relax. To remind visitors of civilisation’s long association with wetlands London Wetland Centre is hosting a Traditional Craft Weekend on 23rd and 24th July. The weekend celebrates rural skills such as basket making, weaving, spinning, felt making, duck decoy carving and coracle ‘sailing’. There will also be a talk about eels, explaining how they were traditionally caught in wetlands and why they are now under threat. And on Sunday 24th July visitors can enjoy the particularly English skill of Morris Dancing; it may not be specific to wetlands but it’s a lot of fun to watch! One of the most important

aspects of wetlands is the habitats they provide for wildlife. London Wetland Centre is home to over 180 species of birds, plus amphibians, reptiles, insects and rare plants. The Centre also hosts a thriving colony of water voles, the UK’s most endangered mammal. Look out for these wonderful little animals among the reeds and irises and listen for a loud ‘plop’ as they dive into the water to escape from perceived danger. The Centre has recently

opened a fantastic new feature; a sand martin nest bank with CCTV links into the nest boxes. EPSOM HOSTS A FESTIVAL OF BANK HOLIDAY FUN

psom Downs Racecourse will once again be opening their gates for the popular Bank Holiday Family Fun Day on Monday 29th August. For the first time in the event’s history, Epsom will turn the event into ‘fun festival’ as it combines with the 2011 Epsom Trainers’ Open Day on Sunday the 28th and racing on Tuesday 30th August.

Entertainment at the annual Family Fun Day on Monday 29th August will include a parade of ex-racehorses, pony rides, hot shoeing demonstration, the Shetland Pony Derby and tradestands selling something for everyone.

Sunday 29th August will see horses exercising on the gallops from around 9am, after which, a complimentary bus service will provide transport around the local racing yards as they open to the public between 10am and 1pm.

In addition to the racing and activities no Family Fun Day at Epsom would be complete without the traditional children’s races, which take part along the race track with prizes for the winners and runners-up. The majority of entertainment

he first Proms concert took place on 10th August 1895 and was the brainchild of the impresario Robert Newman, manager of the newly built Queen’s Hall in London. The 100th Proms season took place in 1994 and the festival now includes over 70 main Prom concerts every year, ever widening the range of symphonic and operatic music presented. Claremont is a beautiful garden surrounding a small lake and featuring an unusual grass amphitheatre. The garden’s creation and development has involved great names in garden history, including Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and ‘Capability’ Brown. In 1726 it was described as ‘the noblest of any in Europe’ and the garden today is of national importance. Visitors walking round the lake will see the island and pavilion, grotto and many viewpoints and vistas. There are hidden features to enjoy as well as wider estate walks and a new children’s play area.

Owned by the National Trust, the Devil’s Punch Bowl is a remarkable natural basin with a true wilderness feel. With its large swathes of lowland heath, it is Europe’s largest spring-eroded valley. The Street, Shalford, Guildford Shalford Mill is a wonderful hidden gem, in the quiet backwater of Shalford sitting across the clear water of the Tillingbourne stream.The National Trust runs regular guided tours of this well preserved early 18th century water mill. The building has remained almost unaltered since ceasing operations in 1914. Although the water wheel no longer functions, it is still possible to trace the remarkable journey of grain around the mill before it was bagged up and carted off to the bakers.

Wander round this tranquil hillside arboretum which contains over 1,000 shrubs and trees. Although perfect as an all-year-round venue, don’t miss the spring’s colourful blossoms (magnolias, rhododendrons, bluebells and azaleas) and fantastic autumn colour (beautiful golds and reds of maples, tupelos and cherries). Make sure you enjoy the views of the lake from the boathouse and if you have a little longer, why not take the circular walk across the wetland? Children’s trails are available.

REIGATE FORT

Reigate Hill, alongside the North Downs Way, East Surrey Nineteenth century defensive fort positioned on top of Reigate Hill, affording sweeping views across the Weald. A short walk along the North Downs Way to Reigate Fort looking at the history and uses of this recently restored Scheduled Ancient Monument and learning how it has played such an important role in the evolution of warfare. Built in 1898 as a defensive structure to protect London from potential French invasion and represents the evolution of warfare due to rapidly developing technology. Step back in time on a guided tour to discover what life was like in the Fort and fantastic walks along the North Downs Way, with impressive views . our types of awards – Gold Flora, Silver-Gilt Flora, Silver Flora, and Bronze Flora – are given in various horticultural categories, including Best Show Garden, Best City Garden, Best Chic Garden, and Best Courtyard Garden, among others. Despite the challenging warm and dry weather conditions throughout April and May, exhibitors excelled in both planting and design, with the world class growers and exhibitors in the Great Pavilion amassing over fifty gold medals in total. The Daily Telegraph Garden, designed by Cleve West, was awarded gold and has been given the accolade of Best Show Garden. This is a stunning hat trick of Best in Show awards for The Daily Telegraph. Among the gold winning highlights, Diarmuid Gavin achieved his first gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for his Irish Sky Garden. The judging panel awarded a total of eight gold medals, five silver - gilt flora medals and silver flora medals in the show garden category. In the Urban Garden category, eight gardens were awarded medals - three gold; four silver-gilt and two silver medals. The Best Urban Garden 2011 title went to Stockton Drilling Ltd, with Lands’ End and Worcester Bosch gardens also winning gold. The Best Artisan Garden accolade and a gold medal were awarded to the Hae-woo-so (Emptying One’s Mind) garden. Other awards in this category are one other gold, one silver – gilt, three silvers and a bronze. In the Great Pavilion, right at the heart of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where world class nurseries exhibit a vast range of top quality plants, there were over 100 medals awarded, of which 56 were gold. The President’s Award in the Great Pavilion was awarded to Crug Farm Plants, Gwynedd Four gold medals were awarded in the Continuous Learning category in the Great Pavilion, with Sparsholt College being awarded gold and Best Continuous Learning Exhibit. Building on water Some of the country’s foremost house builders, architects and surveyors throw caution to the wind, quite literally, when taking part in their exclusive industry event, the Little Britain Challenge Cup, Europe’s largest commercial sailing regatta, which takes place every September in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. This year’s event, taking place 8th-11th September, received a record number of firm entries during the first week of opening their on-line booking service, something that particularly delighted the Little Britain Chairman, David Smith, from Surrey-based luxury house builders Octagon who comments,

“We see the LBCC as the perfect mix of a wonderful few days’ racing combined with some great networking opportunities. Anybody who is anybody, is here for the four day extravaganza, either bringing down company members to crew, or inviting clients who love to join in for both the racing and partying afterwards. We forsee this being a sell out year, so are urging regulars and newcomers alike, who have yet to register, not to delay, so they can be assured of place in September.” Both those wishing to actually compete, or simply join in from the quayside, there is a jam packed programme of events which will take 1500 guests through from sunrise to the early hours throughout the regatta period.

Everyone is invited to join in the evening parties held at Cowes Yacht Haven. This year, the Friday night extravaganza is Viva Las Vegas, giving guests the chance to dress up in theme, and take part in a fun filled programme of entertainment. This includes getting hitched in the Little White Wedding Chapel, and special guest appearances from ‘Elvis’, ‘Frank’, and the lovely ‘Vegas Show Girls’. The LBCC is more than just a jolly, as it continues to support a number of charities, which, more than ever, need help and support. Not least the GBR Paralympic Sailing Team. This is the LBCC’s last big chance to raise funds for these most magnificent of sailors, to ensure they enter the 2012 Olympics in winning style. Already well into serious training on the Olympic waters of Weymouth, the seven young individuals are determinedly gearing themselves towards victory, despite their varying degrees of disability which range from cerebral palsy through minus a right forearm to a double below the knee amputee.

The LBCC money really does make a huge difference, as these sailors, all professionals and regatta champions, get nothing in the way of handouts from government or councils. This is the time that costs start to soar, as the team require more boats, which come hand in hand with higher maintenance bills. Ham House & Garden A

400-year-old treasure trove waiting to be discovered and one of a series of grand houses and palaces alongside the River Thames. Ham House was built in 1610 for Sir Thomas Vavasour, Knight Marshal to James I. On Sir Thomas’s death in 1620, the house passed briefly to the Earl of Holdernesse, before becoming the home of William Murray in 1626. Murray had been the ‘whipping boy’ for the future Charles I. He took punishment on behalf of the young prince, and formed a close bond with him, growing up to share his taste in art and architecture. Between 1637 and 1639, Murray remodelled the interior of Ham. He created the Great Staircase

and a suite of sumptuous rooms on the first floor: the Great Dining Room (now the Hall Gallery), the North Drawing Room, and the Long Gallery with its adjoining picture closet. The decoration is intact in most of these rooms. The remaining part of Murray’s art collection gives us a rare picture of fashions under Charles I.

When the Civil War broke out in 1642, Murray naturally joined the Royalist cause, and was created 1st Earl of Dysart for his loyalty. He died in Edinburgh in 1655.

Following their marriage in 1672, they extended and refurnished Ham as a palatial villa reflecting the Duke’s status as one of the most powerful ministers of Charles II. Much of this luxurious interior decoration survives today, along with rare textiles, furniture and paintings.

Ham passed to Murray’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth. Her father’s titles were conferred upon her in 1655, after his death, when she became the Countess of Dysart. She was described by contemporaries as beautiful, ambitious and greedy. In 1648, she married Sir Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Baronet, of Helmingham Hall in Suffolk, a wealthy and cultivated squire. They had eleven children, of whom five survived to adulthood.

After the Duke’s death in 1682, the Duchess had to curb her extravagance and was eventually reduced to pawning her favourite pictures and jewellery. Elizabeth died at Ham in 1698. Ham House and the Dysart title then passed to her eldest son from her first marriage: Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Earl of Dysart (1649-1727).

with new furniture and paintings. Most notably, the Queen’s Bedchamber, furnished by the Lauderdales for Charles’ Queen, Catherine of Braganza, was converted into a first-floor drawing room. The mahogany chairs, gilt pierglasses and tables, and tapestries after Watteau survive in situ. The 5th Earl partially re-landscaped the garden and was succeeded in 1799 by his brother, Wilbraham, who immediately made improvements inside and outside the house. The 6th Earl was a generous patron of Reynolds and Gainsborough. He created the striking Yellow Satin Bedroom, but most of his changes were antiquarian in spirit, enhancing Ham’s 17thcentury character.

Restoration & renewal Little changed at Ham between the 6th Earl’s death in 1821 and 1884, when William, 9th Earl of Dysart came of age. Sixty years of benign neglect had left the house and its contents in urgent need of repair and Lord Dysart embarked on a thorough restoration campaign.

The roof was renewed, electricity and heating installed, and much of the 17th-century furniture repaired. The 9th Earl died in 1935, when Ham passed to his second cousin, Sir Lyonel Tollemache. Sir Lyonel and his son, Cecil, gave Ham to the National Trust in 1948. Discover the fine interiors and historic gardens that make Ham an unusual and fascinating place to visit. Please note: for conservation reasons, some rooms have low light levels. The beautiful gardens include the much photographed Cherry Garden. It features lavender parterres flanked by two berceaux (vaulted trellises) of pleached hornbeam and a statue of Bacchus at its centre. Walnut and chestnut trees in the outer courtyard act as roosts and nesting sites for a large flock of green parakeets. The formal listed avenues are formed by more than 250 trees. It is said that the Duchess still haunts the house today, along with a number of other ghostly inhabitants.

The History of the Pall Mall Clubhouse

The purpose built Pall Mall clubhouse took three years to complete. Responsible for the work were the famed architects Messrs. Mewes and Davis, who numbered the nearby Ritz amongst their achievements. Together they pioneered a steel structure as an internal framework and utilised every new scientific innovation available at the time, electric and hydraulic lifts, central heating and air conditioning, 120 telephone lines, gas flares to illuminate the front of the building and even electric lighting. Eventually opening in March 1911, at a cost of £250,000, a Vanity Fair article of the era described the clubhouse as being ‘on a scale of grandeur absolutely unparalleled anywhere.’ The Committee convened in the new clubhouse for the long-awaited opening, but half of them got lost in the vast new building and needed guides. The interiors were equally as impressive, as were the views over London, from Nelson’s Column to Buckingham Palace. Opulent French Renaissance style décor, Doric colonnades in the central vestibule and fine paintings, all added to the splendour. In total the clubhouse contained 258 rooms, including a library, photographic studio, barbers and hairdressers, bedrooms, waiting rooms, assembly rooms, committee rooms and smoking rooms. Dining has always been central, with the original Great Gallery able to accommodate up to 500 people. Unsurpassed recreation and sporting facilities have also been a constant, with card tables, a billiard-saloon, fencing, gymnasium, a rifle range and even a bowling alley. Squash courts and a Turkish Bath were also installed, but the piece de resistance was the swimming pool with its mosaic columns, white Sicilian marble walls and bronze balconies overlooking the shimmering green water. It is even rumoured that Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret learned to swim in the pool at the Club.

The History of Woodcote Park

In 1913 Woodcote Park near Epsom racecourse was purchased as a Country Club to compliment the Pall Mall clubhouse. Located on the site of a historic 12thCentury abbey, it was a mansion built in 1679 by Richard Evelyn (brother of diarist John), and mentioned

in his diaries by Samuel Pepys. Barely had the ink dried on the documents when the First World War was declared, and both clubhouses were put at the disposal of the armed services. In 1934, Woodcote Park was razed to the ground by fire, re-opening only 21 months later in May 1936. World War II saw the country club assume a new role, a training centre for thousands of troops with the grounds ploughed for agricultural purposes. In August 1940 a Hawker Hurricane made a forced landing in the golf course. The British pilot was helped into the Clubhouse for medical assistance, having first proved his nationality by waving a packet of ‘Players’ cigarettes at golfers in the vicinity. The intervening years saw the country clubhouse firmly establish itself as a social and golfing haven for members and guests, with two 18-hole parkland golf courses, the Coronation and the Old Course. In the 1980s investment was needed to bring Woodcote Park up to date; around £5 million pounds was invested in refurbishing and equipping the country clubhouse with a sports complex, Cedars, indoor swimming pool, squash and tennis courts. Today Woodcote Park remains a hub for members looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of London.

Motoring History

From the advent of the horseless carriage to the age of the stretch limousine, the Royal Automobile Club has been the ‘Parliament of Motoring.’ The Royal Automobile Club, Britain’s oldest and most influential motoring organisation, was born out of a shared love of motoring and a dedication to preserving the rights and best interests of motorists over 100 years ago. Founded in 1897 by Frederick Richard Simms, assisted by Charles Harrington Moore, the Club’s history mirrors that of motoring itself: In 1896 the restrictive Red Flag Act, that had required a man to walk in front of every vehicle, was repealed, the birth of motoring in the UK. The Emancipation Run, the precursor to today’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, was organised to celebrate the passing of the Locomotives on the Highways Act. In 1900, Claude Johnson organised the ‘Thousand Mile Trial’, putting British motoring on the map. Three years later, the Club vigorously campaigned for the Motor Act, having long had the interests of the private motorist at heart. This Act increased speed limits and removed other restrictive legislation. 1905 and the Club organised the first Tourist Trophy (TT) race, today the oldest

motoring race regularly run. In the same year the Club became the governing body for motor sport in Britain and introduced driving certificates, a responsibility which was not to be taken over by the government for another thirty years. In 1911 the Club turnover rose to £970,000 from £385,000 the previous year, as a result of a huge influx of new members, all paying 25 guineas a head to join and an annual subscription fee of 10 guineas. In 1943 Lord Mountbatten became the Club’s President. From the 1950’s to 1960’s the British car industry began to suffer from overseas competition and inefficiencies and the Club’s main rival the AA began to modernise and consolidate its service to members. Despite this the clubhouse itself continued to prosper. After Lord Mountbatten’s assassination by the IRA in 1979, Prince Michael of Kent became President of the Club. 1991 saw the formation of the RAC Foundation for Motoring. Long before that the Club, through its Public Policy Committee, had become a respected voice in the formulation of government policy on roads and motorised transport. This was recognized and strengthened by the formation, in 1991, of the RAC Foundation for Motoring, a registered charity. RAC Motoring Services Ltd, which offered roadside assistance and many other benefits to over 5½ million associate members, was sold by the Club in 1999 to the Lex Group, and later passed to Aviva, the insurance company formerly known as Norwich Union. 1999 also saw a very new era for the Club as ladies were admitted as members in their own right! Present Day

Overseen by the Club’s Motoring Committee, the Club continues to own and maintain a unique fleet of veteran and historic vehicles and runs a number of annual events including the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which commemorates the Emancipation Run of 1896. It is the longest running motoring event, with people coming from all over the world annually to view over 500 cars dating from before 1905. Members can participate in a range of varied motoring related events whilst the Committee continues to foster links and relationships with industry and the wider motoring world. Recent award winners at the Club have included Lewis Hamilton, James Toseland, and the legendary Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Stirling Moss famous motoring names of recent decades. AUGUST2011 41

WALKING THE WEY NAVIGATION TOWPATH

he Wey Navigation runs for twenty miles from Weybridge to Godalming through some of Surrey’s most beautiful countryside. With eight pubs along the route and numerous points of historical interest, the Navigation is one of Surrey’s most rewarding leisure resources. This month’s walk upstream along the Navigation towpath joins two locks, Papercourt and Triggs.

This stretch of river, viewed from the bridge, is so still that it frequently holds almost perfect reflections making it a super spot for photography...

From Papercourt (described in the previous article in the series) the Navigation flows through an artificial cut while the River Wey follows a sharply meandering course to the North West. As far as Cartbridge, the channel feels very enclosed after the open water meadows between Walsham and Papercourt. The thick vegetation on the banks makes this ideal habitat for damselflies and a motley collection of colourful beetles and other insects. One of the most prevalent plants along here is bamboo, so much so that floating down the Navigation can feel almost exotic. Overhanging trees on the non-towpath side throng with small birds; the walker in spring and summer is serenaded with birdsong. No doubt the profusion of wildlife here is also due to the presence to the West of a 20 hectare nature reserve owned by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. Running parallel to the Navigation is Broadmead Cut, a drainage channel dug as part of the River Wey Improvement Scheme (RWIS) of the 1930s which made several improvements to the Navigation. About 600 yards from Papercourt, Tanyard Bridge crosses the Navigation. It carries the Woking to Ripley bridleway. On the nontowpath side loom buildings that bear evidence of the Navigation’s industrial past. There used to be both a mill and tannery here.

A second bridge, known as High Bridge, carries a footpath between Send and Old Woking. This stretch of the Navigation curves around the village of Send (for more information see: http://www. sendvillage.org/About_Send.html). Send is a village with a long history, already a thriving community when it was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086). More recently, the area around Send has been home

to a number of celebrities, including Robson Green, Sandi Toksvig and Paul Weller. Above High Bridge used to stand one of the Navigation’s earliest wharves, known as Send Heath Wharf. For about two centuries, until the railways came and a station was built on Woking Heath (1838), Send Heath Wharf, with its handy road links to Send and Woking, was an important and bustling part of the Navigation’s industry. The towpath curves to the South before running under the bridge at Cartbridge. The towpath changes sides here but there is a path under the bridge with steps up, making a safer route to the towpath than attempting to cross the road. Under the bridge, a stone in the opposite wall bears the date 1759, probably dating from the first brick rebuilding of this old bridge (Wardle, 2003). Ideally sited beside the towpath after the bridge is the New Inn. It has a large beer garden with views of the Navigation. The towpath at Cartbridge is attractively shaded with a neat row of small trees that recalls the orderly canals of the Continent rather than the more natural feel of much of the Navigation. The towpath side is abutted by back gardens. An elegant iron footbridge spans the water. Soon, the towpath reaches Worsfold Gates. Worsfold Gates are floodgates and are only closed in times of flood when the excess water is forced into the natural river which rejoins (as we are travelling upstream) the channel here. The National Trust’s workshops are here and the buildings provide a base for its maintenance crews. From 1885, master carpenter Walter Grove, his wife and their eight sons and five daughters occupied the house. Walter’s son, Norman took over as master carpenter

and maintenance foreman until 1966 and many other Grove family members worked on the Navigation, having collectively more than 350 years of service on the Wey (Wardle, 2003). Beyond Worsfold, the towpath passes some agricultural land, where last summer a herd of friendly goats grazed, and crosses a long iron and concrete bridge over a drainage ditch before the landscape opens out into water meadows once more, providing yet more vital habitat for wildlife. Greater crested grebes are often sighted here, along with many other types of waterfowl. It is a popular fishing spot for humans and herons. While walking here on Midsummer’s Day last year, the author observed hundreds of field chafer beetles. They would fly to a stem of long grass, crawl to the tip and hang suspended from it, bouncing in the breeze, before flying to another stem and repeating the process. No doubt a biological imperative was at work, but to the uneducated it looked for all the world as if the bungee beetles were doing it just for fun, or midsummer madness! Although the river and Navigation flow together here, the course is not entirely natural as the meandering river was partly straightened during the RWIS. Ordinance Survey Explorer Map no.145 shows the old meanders, which are now largely silted up but remain beyond the nontowpath side. Before the works, the towpath ran on the opposite bank. Just before Triggs Lock, the River branches away to the Southeast and is crossed by the towpath on a small bridge. This stretch of river, viewed from

the bridge, is so still that it frequently holds almost perfect reflections making it a super spot for photography if the sky is interesting, although the bridge is a little narrow and the path a little popular for tripods! After the bridge, the towpath reaches Triggs Lock, marking the half way point of the Navigation’s journey from the Thames to Godalming. Perhaps because no public road reaches here, this is a particularly pretty and peaceful spot, popular with artists and photographers. The attractive lock house dates from 1769 but, unlike other cottages of similar age along the Navigation, strangely does not have Listed Building status (Wardle, 2003). The Grove family lived here from 1856 until, presumably, 1885 when they moved to Worsfold Gates (www.weyriver.co.uk/theriver).

‘I never dreamt I’d be on TV!’ INTERVIEW BY NICKY MORRIS

o says Guildford-based art and antiques valuer. But David is becoming a well-known face not only for his regular appearances on ITV’s daytime antiques programme Dickinsons Real Deal, but more recently the equally successful ‘Secret Dealers’. For the month of July David was on our screens almost every day and with Dickinsons Real Deal sold to over 30 countries it’s a pretty sure bet he’s on somewhere in the world at some time. After coming out of the Navy David started his antiques business in the ‘60s, opening his first shop in the Kings Road. ‘ I did a lot of house clearances and I shudder to think of the things that I scrapped . I still struggle with the idea that objects produced in the 50s when I was a young man are now collectable! Are we both antiques?!’ David’s business was very successful and grew rapidly. With his main business in Thames Ditton he finally ended up with six further retail outlets . He moved to

the country, bought a big house, racehorses and had four children (one of whom, Grant Ford, can be seen as a regular on the BBC’s Antiques Road Show). But like so many, David’s businesses was badly hit by the recession of the 80s. He moved to Compton just outside Guildford where his busy antique shop became a wellknow landmark. Then in the 90s David switched tack, sold his business and for the past twenty years has been a professional valuer of antiques and works of art. With his wide knowledge and experience he assesses everything from jewellery to silver, furniture, paintings – the lot! ‘It was a surprisingly good move and I wish I had thought of it earlier’ says David. ‘It takes me all over the country and occasionally abroad and I get to meet a wonderful amount of interesting people with the occasional celebrity for good measure!’ David’s great strength both professionally and on television is his very broad knowledge of all types of

antiques. The programmes also require a very quick response. ‘Many people don’t realise that we use our own money on both shows so I have to know what I am buying. In the Real Deal I don’t have sight of the object before it lands on my table and on Secret Dealer we are given one hour to chase round an entire house deciding what we would like to buy and out bid the other dealers.’ David also is a freelance auctioneer, and last Christmas enjoyed conducting an auction in the House of Lords. David feels very fortunate. ‘I am busy, I never know what the next day will bring and I am in show business – who could ask for anything more?’

here is an increasing trend for both men and women to seen non-surgical, non-invasive methods for achieving a younger look. imagined. She explained that it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance. I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

When I apply semipermanent make-up I always draw the shape on your face first so we can see if it really suits you and to make sure you are happy. With all the celebrity focus and new TV programmes, Made in Chelsea and the likes, the look can get a little convoluted. How do you know who to go to and what shape to choose? Treatments can vary from 30 – 45 minutes and prices vary according to practitioner as do types of Reiki, but the healing element is the same. Most people have Reiki treatments, and may even be attuned to study Level 1 and 2 for everyday self treatment and care for family members and/or friends. he main reason why people put on weight is through bad eating habits accompanied by lack of activity. 1. Do not cut too many calories

If you reduce your calorie intake too much which would be less than 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day, your body will respond by slowing your metabolism. Your metabolism may slow by as much as 45%. Furthermore, you will be losing lean muscle mass. Lean muscle mass is a calorie burner. 58 AUGUST2011

2. interval training

Interval training is any type of exercise that causes the heart rate to go up briefly followed by a break. This is done multiple times to get the heart rate up and then bring it back down. Some of you will think that interval training is just for athletes. That’s not true. Regardless of your fitness level you can conduct a form of interval training when walking or jogging. Listen to your body so that you don’t overdo it and consult your physician to make sure you are medically cleared. For example, when going for a walk, pick that park bench or telephone pole about 100 yards or less from your starting position and simply pick up the pace to the point that you feel like you have increased exertion and you find yourself huffing and puffing. Once you cross the finish line, slow your pace and slow your breathing down. Then do it again. Do this 3 to 8 times depending on your fitness level and you will burn more calories and increase your cardiovascular conditioning.

It’s official, that post-holiday feeling can wear off in as little as seven days. Dutch researcher Jessica de Bloom warned this week the feel-good benefits of a vacation disappear quickly, and unfortunately that tan you worked so hard on may fade just as fast.

With recent research from Superdrug indicating 71% of British women feel more confident with a golden glow, it’s time to encourage an everlasting tan. But fear not, you can go from pale and pasty to post-holiday glow without so much as stepping on a plane. The faux glow is safer, quicker and more dramatic than its sunny sister alternative. Just as well, considering deep, rich-coloured skin, a la Farrah Fawcett, is bang on tan trend. “Whatever the season, the dark ‘retro tan’ always looks good,” says tanning expert James Read. “There are tricks to achieve this look but it’s all about making the skin look glistening, golden and hot. Lotion

products are making a comeback this season as they are the best formula to deliver that darker look.”

Get glowing with our expert guide. PREP PERFECT Dry, dehydrated skin is your self-tan enemy. If you want your look to have staying power, sloughing off dead skin cells is all important. “Exfoliate - this prepares a smooth base for your tan,” advises Sun-Believable tanning guru James Harknett. “A gentle scrub is sufficient to remove dead skin cells and give a good foundation for a tan to cling to.” Plan your tanning session and stay one step ahead with your hair removal. Wax 48 hours or shave 24 hours before tanning to avoid product entering open pores on your legs, which can resemble telltale spots. Moisturiser is both your friend and foe when it comes to tan prep, according to Harknett. “Don’t use a moisturiser all over your body before tanning as it works as a barrier against the dihydroxyacetone or DHA, the tanning agent that reacts with the proteins on our skin,” he says. “But do apply an oil-free moisturiser sparingly to the feet, elbows, cuticles, hands and back of heels, only. Apply a small amount of moisturiser to the base of your palm, using a semi-circular motion. This allows the tan line to naturally fade, so nobody knows you’re faking it.”

HEALTH BEAUTY TAN TACTICS Know your limits when it comes to your faux glow. Work with your natural complexion to achieve a flurry of “have you been away?” compliments rather than self-tan inquisitions. “From my experience you should only ever aim to go two shades darker than your current natural skin tone,” advises Athena Skouvakis, celebrity make-up artist and advisor to Piz Buin. “Opting for darker shades, unfortunately, won’t give you the sleek sun-kissed look that we all adore.” If a tan’s a top priority for you, dedicate time to being a bronzing beauty rather than piling it on as you’re flying out of the door: a recipe for a streaky disaster. Skouvakis says: “A key self-tanning rule is to make sure you don’t rush the application - never mind how much you want to get out and party! “To avoid messy streaks or an uneven shade, you really must take the time to do it properly. Also remember that less is more and you should always be able to build the colour up.” MAINTAIN MODE Keep your fake tan glowing for as long as possible with regular self-tan maintenance. Nobody wants to walk around showing off streaks, patches or premature fading. “For an even tan you need to keep skin sleek, smooth and well hydrated,” says Nichola Joss, St Tropez skin finishing expert. Moisturise twice daily to maintain the longevity of your tan and help your tan fade naturally. Despite the misconception that exfoliation will ‘shed’ a tan, the action of lifting dead cells will keep your colour looking fresh. “Tanning products absorb into several layers of skin - the surface build-up of dead cells is what can make you look dull and orangey,” Joss explains. “Gently exfoliate every two or three days; you’ll still have a tan coming through, but

it’s radiant.” Amp up the volume of your tan for evenings out with a glossy sheen using a shimmer oil on areas that you want to highlight, like shoulders, collarbone, arms and legs. TAN TRUTHS British beauties are obsessed with achieving a gorgeous glow. Superdrug’s research reveals the lengths us ladies go to for self-tanning: The average female will spend as many as 680 hours applying fake tan during her lifetime. Almost a quarter (23%) of women confess to having an unhealthy obsession with looking tanned. More than half (54%) want a noticeable tan like Cheryl Cole or Katie Price. One in 10 women wouldn’t consider going on a night out unless they had applied fake tan. Of the 1,500 men questioned, 23% confess to using fake tan on occasion.

Structure in the Garden

WITH SUMMER NOW UNDER WAY, IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR PEOPLE TO LOOK OUT INTO THEIR GARDENS AND FEEL A BIT LET DOWN BY THEIR EFFORTS. ONCE THE BEDDING PLANTS HAVE PEAKED OFTEN THE GARDEN CAN TAKE ON A SLIGHTLY NEGLECTED LOOK. TO AVOID THIS EFFECT IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT THE GARDEN CONTAINS STRUCTURE.

here you are planning a new garden providing structure is relatively easy using a mixture of different or feature ground surfaces, partitioning & perennial plants. Where you are adding structure to an established garden this can be more difficult, but the addition of structural plants is the simplest way to do this. I’m sure a lot of people will be saying what do I mean by structure. What I do not mean necessarily, is the use of buildings and paving everywhere. In it’s simplest form it is the use of different materials within the garden, both hard and soft which will provide interest all year round. This can give you different forms, textures and colours, but also don’t forget scent. The skill is in using enough for interest but not over doing it which will result in sensory overload. Structure can also be used as a framework for showing off other features of the garden that would otherwise be lost in the sea of foliage, flower or stone. When planning a garden paving is often one of the first choices that is made. You need enough paving to enable the garden to be accessible all year round. If you want to spend a lot of time sitting and enjoying

the garden choosing paving that will add to the interest would in most cases be inportant. In a few cases a more utilitarian approach could be appropriate. The main frameworks almost certainly would involve providing a backdrop for the garden. This could be in the form of a wall or fence, but in most cases I would recommend a simple green backdrop of plants, even if you do need a wall or fence for security purposes. Using a dense green canopy such as laurel yew or other conifers is like providing a plain backdrop when you are painting a portrait. Like with this you do not want to detract from the main subject whether this comes in the form of a pot, sculpture, plant or flower border. In smaller gardens it may be necessary to ensure that this backdrop has a bit of seasonal interest such as the spring red leaves of photinia turning green for the rest of the year. For larger gardens and borders it is advisable to break up the landscape with the use of more greenery as partitions. In some gardens this could take the form of formality by the use of trimmed buxus (box) plants as mini hedges, or in borders it may be the use of a few plants which are reliable in performance, which

may not be outstanding on their own, eg tiarella (a foliage plant) but provide the partition or backdrop to more seasonal plants such as many other cottage garden plants and some shrubs. The use of partitions are also great to show off specimen plants: cloud trees or simpler topiary as well as many other specimen plants are shown to their best with a plain backdrop, this could be the stone of the house or patio or a contrasting plant form. What I will guarantee is that it will make you stop and think on that next lazy day! This hopefully has given you a bit to think about the next time you are sat dreaming in the garden. The only other bit of advice is that the best thinking is always done with a drink in your hand, choose your tipple.

e first met our latest client, a Kent property developer, when he called in at our stand at the RHS Chelsea Flower show,” explains Crown Pavilions’ in-house Garden Designer, Carl Hooper. “He explained that he had admired our products for some time - and browsing our website noticed we have our own landscaping company (which, incidentally, was awarded the much coveted Merit Award for Outstanding Presentation),” he adds. “He wanted a beautiful garden complete with spacious gazebo, all of which would reflect the unique character of the main house. All elements had to work together in harmony as well as forming a sumptuous back-drop for relaxing and entertaining. Day or night, winter or summer, rain or shine… he wanted a year-round sanctuary where he could work, rest and play.” Unfortunately ‘sanctuary’ wasn’t the first thing that came to mind when Carl and the design team arrived on site one cold, damp March morning. “We had to clamber across rubble, weeds and rubbish,” he recalls. “The soil was poor and the drainage atrocious. However to our landscapers it was the perfect blank canvas and at the heart of this canvas would be the jewel in the crown: a bespoke 12-seater cedar gazebo with luxury dining, seating and lighting, fully wired for media and internet – an ‘escape’ that could be a haven of relaxation one minute and a glorious pleasure zone the next.” Crown Pavilions and its sister company Crown

Structures must be sturdy and low maintenance. Lighting must complement each other. The solar PV clock is slowly ticking... towards April 2012

olar PV has never been more in vogue. Even the fiscally astute Dragons in the den have been wowed by the fantastic investment opportunities presented by this fast growing industry. As more and more domestic home owners take up this wonderful investment and socially green opportunity the industry braces itself for what will surely be an extremely busy 6 months. The tariff was started in April 2010 and the government paper dictated that the tariff would not be altered until April 2012. As April looms ever closer more and more people are joining the Solar revolution whilst the optimum tariff remains available. Industry insiders predict not only will the tariff drop in accordance with the tariff table issued in the Government paper but will have an additional cut applied. This is essentially to bring the tariff back in line with the original return on investment figures of between 8 – 10%. The current reduction in the cost of installation has in some cases pushed up the ROI to as high as 17 – 18%. The fact that the tariff bracket applied when the install is complete is maintained, plus inflation, for the life of the tariff (25 years) means people are keen to sign up now. The Country House in the City T he lanes that crisscross Hampstead Hill are lined with many fine houses, proud among them the evocatively named, Charlecote. Those with a mind for history may recall the grand Warwickshire estate, Charlecote Park. Perhaps, with its 12th Century origins and Victorian-era remodelling, it inspired the naming of this distinctive 1870s London home, adorned as it is with medieval fireplaces and stained glass. There are no records that formalise any such connection, yet it is undeniable that the tranquil atmosphere of a country manor permeates the Charlecote of Hampstead. Originally the property would have been festooned with Victorian splendour: rich colours and textures, thickly-hung drapes and copious ornamental clutter. Unfortunately, much of the original character had been smothered under ubiquitous layers of ageing white paint. The new owners appointed

exclaims Mark Howorth, founder of Callender Howorth. “To be able to take an historic property, restore its character and re-imagine it for a new era, is a great opportunity.” The Charlecote project began with restoration of the unusual stained glass and medieval

fireplaces, along with swathes of original Victorian wood and plasterwork. “Bringing these distinguishing features back to life was really quite piognant,” Mark explains. “It put all of us in touch with the history of the house and helped to inspire themes for its renaissance: a firm nod to the past, but with a convivial, eclectic character that befits contemporary family life.” Construction work took the property back to brick, sensitively renovating each room to impart its Victorian essence, but without the era’s heavy-handedness. Structural changes included a conservatory extension to the kitchen to create a relaxed family dining space, along with a large Italianate loggia – essentially a covered veranda ideal for sheltered alfresco entertaining. The owners were keen to be involved in the details of the interior decoration; Callender Howorth organised a visit to the Victoria &

Albert Museum to research colours and motifs of the period. Favoured palettes were updated to add vibrancy, while quirky elements, such as the oversized orchid wall images in one of the bathrooms, bring lightheartedness to the design. Beneath the surface bristles the very latest in security, entertainment and lighting technology, making Charlecote a home of very modern comforts. ell what an interesting month since I last addressed these pages. I’ve had more enquiries from readers than the previous three months put together, which reminded me of the writing load I used to have when I was the ‘Silver Editor’ of an American newspaper called “The Antiques Monthly” and questions with photographs poured in from all over the States. Anyway the recent batch of enquiries was so diverse that thought I would print just a couple for you to illustrate the range of items that people have. The first is one of a pair of vases, each bearing the stamp of Carlton Ware, but the owner could find no further information. The vases are extremely what is known in the trade as - ‘showy’; lots of shape and lots of colour with big classical scenes on the front and back. This was because the Victorians of the late 19th century loved mirrors over their fireplaces, at the back of sideboards and anywhere else they could stand ornaments, and so they had to be decorated on the reverse side as well as the front. This practice did not cease with the end of the century and continued well into the next, when in fact these vases were made. Carlton Ware was one of many products from the company formed by the partnership of Laurence Arthur Birks and Adolphus Joseph Rawlins in the 1890’s, which continued until1932 at the Vine Pottery at Stoke. in production in 1957. They made china in addition to their earthenware products the latter of which these vases are a fine example. For something so decorative it is surprising that these wares do not have great commercial value. They were made in vast number and, being available to the masses of middle class families were considered ‘old fashioned’ by the following two generations, and are only just being collected. The name of the country of origin marked on any item will indicate that it was made after 1891 when the ‘McKinley Tariff ’ as it was known was brought in by the future President of The United States of America as an import protectionist measure. The addition of the words ‘Made In’ will indicate after 1904. There are very few rules in the antiques business but that is certainly one of them. Dates inscribed, engraved or carved on antiques can be very difficult to authenticate; the typeface and quality of writing are key factors. It is too complicated to put briefly but a guide rather than a rule is to visit and take note in a cemetery of the dates and lettering on gravestones. It was rarely if ever done to put old-fashioned lettering on a headstone, and of course a date before the lettering was invented would be equally wrong. The forms of decorative borders and frames, particularly around crests,

coats of arms and presentation inscriptions are also indicative of age. The Victorians loved to mix designs and periods when they tried to create revival pieces of an earlier period. But sometimes even this can defeat an old hand like me. A case in point is the slope-top box illustrated. These boxes are often referred to as bible boxes but that more correctly describes a straightforward box with no slope. This is actually a desk, of a type not much referred to before the Tudor period but universally popular by the end of the 17th century when more people could read and write. One early record is in an inventory of Sir William More of Loseley who owned ‘a deske (sic) of chestnut tree’ and ‘another little deske to wryte (sic) on. The latter was valued at 3d by the valuer. Now part of the carving on this desk is a mystery to me. The scrolling designs is common enough and typical of the mid to late 17th century which would tie up nicely with the construction and the iron work and it is good Baltic oak, the stable timber for good solid furniture at the time. But to my knowledge the diagonal lines do not fit to any known pattern in the UK, nor am I sure if they are contemporary. It could be Scandinavian or even more romantically, it could have been done by a sailor on board ship after he had visited some exotic island and picked up some native designs. So I’m stuck on this one and ask

if anyone recognises this pattern, and has the sort of ”Oh I know where that came from” reaction please write and tell me. One of the most interesting pieces of American silver I have ever dealt with came to light after an enquiry from an English reader of ‘The

Antiques Monthly’. It was a large bowl with two cast side handles and a presentation inscription over a coat of arms. It read ”Valentine and Louisa D. Mott”. Back in the 1970’s this meant nothing to me and there was no Google, but the lettering of the inscription

was typical of the 1850’s, so we had an approximate date. Underneath were the stamps ‘Jones,Ball & Co’ ‘Boston’ and most interestingly ‘Pure Silver Coin’. Armed with this I flew to my copy of Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers by the delightfully named Dorothy T. Rainwater. Here I discovered that Jones and Ball registered their mark in 1852 as part of a huge conglomerate with the equally engaging name of ‘Shreve, Crump and Low, Co. Inc. They certainly know how to come up with catchy titles. So now we have date, maker and material. But who were Valentine and Louisa Mott? The shield of the coat of arms was divided in three; in one third was a hand with a scalpel, another was a ribbon around a tube and the last was a crescent. The latter is a device with many meanings but the scalpel was a clue. By now I’m sure the suspense is almost too much to bear so I will cut to the chase and tell you that via The New York Historical Society, Rosary College Library, Chicago and the Milwaukee Museum of Fine Art I found that Valentine Mott was a hugely important American surgeon (1785 – 1865) who performed over one thousand ground-breaking operations including the first successful amputation at the hip. The bowl went on tour from New York to the places just mentioned and now rests on display In the Milwaukee museum. So you never know what might happen when you write to me.
