Secrets of the Royal Bedchamber A new exhibition exploring the Bedchamber of the 17th and 18th century royal court. These are beds, but not as you know them!

27TH MARCH UNTIL 3RD NOVEMBER 2013 AT HAMPTON COURT PALACE

T

his spring independent charity, Historic Royal Palaces, will transform Hampton Court’s Baroque Palace with a special exhibition full of intrigue, drama and surprise – at its heart will be six magnificent, royal Beds. For the first time ever the world’s largest and rarest collection of early State Beds will be presented in one dramatic display which tells the story of how and why the bedchamber became the most public and important destination in the Palace. The exhibition will also offer a rare glimpse into architect John Vanbrugh’s Prince of Wales’s Apartments – opened for the first time in 20 years. Through the stories of their royal owners and servants, visitors will be able to explore the elaborate, sometimes bizarre bedchamber rituals, unusual sleeping arrangements and enjoy the luxurious excesses of the Stuart and Hanoverian courts. Discover what really took place in the royal bedchamber where heirs were born, marriages consummated, monarchs were struck down and died, and all the while important affairs of state were conducted in this most personal of rooms. Most strange of all, these events took place before an audience of courtiers, politicians and family members, who turned everyday life for the monarch into a grand performance.

Queen, Mary of Modena, and was the scene of the royal birth that sparked the quiet revolution that led to the end of the Stuart line. A rare but modest survivor is the unique ‘travelling bed’ of George II which comes apart into 54 pieces and is testament to a time when the King and his court were often on the move. This particular king took his bed as far afield as his second home in Hanover and even to the battlefields of Europe! Each state bed reveals the intense competition between monarchs, and their courtiers, who expressed their taste and magnificence through their beds - the largest and most costly objects in their homes. These beds could cost the price of a London town house and yet, incredibly, might never have been slept in! The new exhibition, supported by Savoir Beds, will create an experience which takes a contemporary twist on the distinctive Baroque style of the palace. Through pioneering interpretation, visitors will be plunged into an immersive, interactive world of the Stuart Court, showcasing rare and amazing objects from the Royal Collection and other important collections, all in the backdrop of the beautiful architecture of the State Apartments to create an experience unlike anything seen at a royal palace before.

Inspired by the French fashion of the lever, the monarch would meet courtiers and ministers during an elaborate morning ceremony, during which the most privileged of his servants, woke, washed and dressed the King before the business of the day began. Discover how courtiers would fight for the illustrious and intimate positions to serve the bedchamber to get close to the monarch, such as the ‘groom of the stool’ or the ‘necessary woman’. For an extraordinary century, the State Bedchamber became the most sought after room in the palace for the rich and the powerful, where privileged access brought honour or the king’s favour. At its heart was the great, state bed, from where the monarch could conduct affairs of State.

Historic Royal Palaces’ exhibition curator, Sebastian Edwards, said: “Visitors to the exhibition will discover that, far from being restful places of privacy, the state bedchamber was the seat of power – the equivalent of the modern day boardroom, from which the business of the Kingdom was conducted. Events which took place in and around these beds had enormous consequences for society, politics and history. Courtiers were Knighted, wars were brokered, marriages consummated and mistresses wooed all in the shadow of the royal bed. These are extraordinary beds – but not as we know them today.’

These remarkable State Beds have undergone extensive conservation and restoration over some fifty years. Each bed has a dramatic, and often tragic, story to tell. For the first time the tragic story behind Queen Anne’s magnificent velvet state bed will be revealed – ordered by a dying queen in her final year, childless after many sad losses, she faced the prospect of her dynasty ending with her death. Left unused and forgotten, it was described by the thrifty George III as a ‘venerable old relic’. Another splendid bed featured is the infamous ‘Warming Pan Bed’, the State Bed of James II’s

Guildford International Music Festival

The musical spotlight is set to shine brightly on Guildford in March 2013. World-class talent will be showcased alongside local musicians for a delicious sonic cocktail of concerts, talks and community projects.

H

ighlights this year include concerts by the Brodsky String Quartet who celebrate 40 years of performing together with The Wheel of 4Tunes, the high energy drummers from The Dhol Foundation, invigorated by their Olympic ceremony appearance, uplifting harmonies from the London Community Gospel Choir and folk group Spiro performing their meticulously rhythmic music. Guitar great John Williams returns to Guildford with an exceptional programme of duo, solo and ensemble pieces featuring special guest Craig Ogden and a new composition from leading local composer and musician Steve Goss. The Festival is unique in its range of venues and partnerships. A newly forged partnership with G Live, Guildford’s newest concert venue, sees more world class artists take to the stage, including Julian Lloyd Webber and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, while established partnerships with The Boileroom and the Academy of Contemporary Music sees the Guildford Fringe programme take over the Guildford’s pubs, restaurants and streets in the run up to, and during the Festival. The Fringe programme highlights the town’s growing reputation as a musical hub and draws on an eclectic mix of musicians and musical genres. One of the most intriguing programming strands in this Festival is the Hidden Heritage series. Messiaen and Elgar will be performed by small ensembles in the intimate and stunning hilltop church of St Marthaon-the-Hill. Further treats include Elgar and Debussy on the harp, flute and viola at the Watts Gallery, a celebration of Maori culture at the stately Clandon Park, and a musical tour of the 400 year old pianos and harpsichords at the National Trust’s Hatchlands Park. There is also a special in-the-round performance at St Mary’s Church, one of Guildford’s oldest buildings, in which ZRI present Brahms and the Gipsy, celebrating one of the composer’s last and greatest works, the soulful Clarinet Quintet. This series is a rare opportunity to enjoy beautiful music at close quarters and (re)-discover some of Guildford’s most cherished architecture. 1 4 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

The town’s famous cobbled High Street will witness a truly unique, musical event for all the family - Pied Piping. People of all ages, especially children, will be invited to form a musical procession, snaking all the way from G Live at the top of the High Street down to the River Wey. It’s part of the National Learn to Play Day, and at the end of the parade, everyone is welcome to try out a new musical instrument at the Electric Theatre with expert guidance from teachers from the Academy of Contemporary Music and Andertons Music. Catch our Festival specials too – a Music Documentary Film Series; programmes of contemporary dance by award-winning choreographer Yael Flexer and emerging dance artist Sian Goldby; Intimate Letters, a dramatic retelling of the illicit love affair which resulted in Janáček composing one of the 20th century’s finest and most passionate string quartets (featuring actor Timothy West and the stunning Pavão String Quartet) and Piano Plus – a day of pianistic passion with Mark Bebbington and Emilie Capulet. With nearly 60 events making up the programme and featuring a whole host of musical ensembles, local and international, there really is something for everyone. Look out for the hidden gems, the imaginative and creative events for the under 18s, as well as those free, family events including Motown mixes from the local vocal sensation, the Rock Choir on the High Street and buskers around the city who are hoping to keep feet tapping throughout the Festival. Brochures are available from the Tourist Information Centre, The Electric Theatre, Festival venues, most public places in and around Guildford and online from the Festival website. Gateaux Fabulous A taste of Bachmanns’ new patisserie, Church Street, Weybridge

inter sunlight streams through the windows of Bachmanns’ new Weybridge patisserie, falling on a sweeping counter filled with the finest gateaux, handmade chocolates and jewel-coloured macaroons. At the back of the shop, a window on the immaculate kitchen gives a glimpse of pastry chefs and chocolatiers hard at work creating Bachmanns’ multi award-winning range that also includes speciality breads, croissants and pastries. Building on the success of its original shop in Thames Ditton, Bachmanns Weybridge brings the elegance of Switzerland’s patisseries and chocolateries to Surrey. Exacting attention to detail, from the bespoke refrigerated cabinets imported from Italy to the chandelier sourced locally from Church House Antiques in Weybridge,

creates a sophisticated interior with the welcoming atmosphere you would expect from a family-run business with good old-fashioned values. A seating area allows customers to enjoy coffee with pastries. Behind the counter, staff share Bachmanns’ passion for patisserie, offering expert advice on gateaux, chocolates, gifts and celebration cakes, packaging every product exquisitely. Established in 1989 by Ernst and Marilyn Bachmann in Thames Ditton, the business is now run by son Chris. Swiss-born Ernst, who is renowned throughout the industry as one of the UK’s leading pastry chefs, remains involved in the business as Executive Consultant and everything at Bachmanns is still made to his exacting recipes. “Dad’s recipes combine the best ingredients with the master patissier’s skill and, as with all great things, they are often imitated but

rarely bettered.” says Chris Bachmann. “We operate as a centre of excellence and are committed to training and developing the best pastry chefs. Our long-running apprenticeship programme attracts high calibre talent from universities and catering colleges.” Additional working space at the Weybridge shop has allowed Bachmanns to increase production of its handmade chocolate range with a dedicated chocolate room. As well as the skills of the master chocolatier, it’s all about the couverture with Chris making regular trips to Switzerland to source the finest. “We are currently using high end Felchlin and Carma imported from Switzerland as our basic couvertures; they have the best qualities for an all round chocolate, smooth with a subtle flavour that allows the ingredients with which they are combined to shine. Our Bachmanns Bars are made with

Felchlin Grand Cru couvertures – the Maricaibo dark 65% has been voted best chocolate in the world. We use Maricaibo milk [couverture] to create deliciously distinctive chocolates with creamy caramel and orange blossom notes.” With Easter fast approaching, the Bachmanns team is set for a busy time ahead. Surrey can look forward to Easter specialities including handmade Easter Eggs filled with toasted almond rochers, chocolate Easter Bunnies, hot cross buns and Simnel cakes.

What an Eton Mess Thortons create a sumptuous white chocolate crammed with delicious strawberries and pieces of crunchy meringue with the help of Windsor resident Sandra Moran

B

ritain’s best-loved chocolate maker, Thorntons, has created a new chocolate flavour thanks to the help of Windsor resident Sandra Moran. Sandra entered Thorntons nationwide competition, ‘Great Chocolate Britain’, which asked entrants to use their imagination and passion for chocolate to come up with the next big flavour, inspired by their region of the country. Eton Mess, the popular and iconic British dessert, inspired Sandra’s winning suggestion, a sumptuous white chocolate crammed with delicious strawberries and pieces of crunchy meringue, which was crowned the champion following a public vote. The competition ran throughout last summer and chocolate fans entered with the hope that their creation would grace the shelves of Thorntons shops across the country. After hundreds of entries, Thorntons chocolatiers chose the best three inventions from each region, entries included Nottinghamshire apple pudding to cranachan crunch, then they put the ideas to the public vote. After 45,000 votes, Sandra and her Eton Mess creation came out on top. Sandra lives in St Leonards Park in Windsor with her husband Philip, both are Thorntons chocolate lovers. When Sandra saw the competition on Facebook last year she loved the idea of seeing her idea become a reality and of course was also inspired by the thought of winning lots of delicious chocolate. Her inspiration was the landmark of Eton College, which she drives past every day, this provided the idea of Eton Mess chocolate, combining British heritage and divine flavours. Sandra felt that Eton Mess, the classic British dessert, was something that the British public would love in chocolate format. Sandra never dreamed she would win the competition, but was delighted to be unexpectedly named as the national winner. As part of her prize Sandra was invited to visit the Thorntons chocolate

1 8 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

factory in Alfreton, Derbyshire, where she enjoyed making her winning flavour alongside Thorntons expert chocolatiers. The Eton Mess bar goes on sale to the public in February and is available in all Thorntons’ stores. Sandra is a lover of good quality food and is often found in the kitchen creating new dishes, showing off her creative flare which she clearly demonstrated by developing the delicious Eton Mess chocolate. Sandra was excited when she was invited to the Thorntons factory to see her chocolate creation come to life, she saw cocoa beans and the process they go through to finally become what she affectionately calls her ‘little blocks of heaven’. Sandra guarded her first block of Eton Mess chocolate carefully, a sneak preview before the product went on sale, she savoured every chunk. Now she’s looking forward to everyone getting the chance to taste it across the entire country. Sandra said: “I have been a chocolate fanatic for years and was delighted to find out my flavour had been voted as the UK’s favourite. Eton is one of my favourite towns and I just absolutely love the dessert. The chocolate is absolutely delicious, and I’m so proud it will be on shelf in Thorntons stores.” Keith Hurdman, Master Chocolatier at Thorntons, said: “The Great Chocolate Britain competition was a chance to combine celebrating our fantastic British heritage with the nation’s love of chocolate. The search for new flavours really was exciting, not just for those that entered but for all of us at Thorntons, as it was the first time we’ve put our chocolate development in the hands of the public. Eton Mess is one of those great British desserts and the flavour will be a delicious addition to our range, I’m sure it’ll be a huge hit”.

A Wood for All Seasons

Saving Teazle Wood Think of Surrey, and you may well think of woodland. Still England’s most wooded county, it is defined for many by its beautiful rural scenery of mature trees.

W

hen the men and women of the Olympic Cycling Road Races powered their way through Surrey last summer, spectators commented on the splendour of the countryside. The television coverage, much of it filmed from the air, revealed green, lush, attractive landscapes. One woodland contributing to the leafy backdrop was Teazle Wood, glimpsed as the cyclists made their colourful way through Leatherhead and out towards Oxshott. Those enjoying the race and the general sense of a natural setting would not have guessed that this small wooded stretch was in jeopardy. Teazle Wood was due to be auctioned in June 2012 as land “with strategic development potential”. Choked with discarded rubbish and hooked-up trees, it had not been managed for decades. One local woman, convinced of the ecological, social and educational worth of this land, saw the sale as a moment of danger, but also as a window of opportunity. Lucy Quinnell passionately believed that numerous features of Teazle Wood justified an urgent community campaign to purchase the woodland and ensure its future protection. The wood features in the Ancient Woodland Inventory, but until later in 2012 was missing, erroneously, from the Ancient Woodland map. A Site of Nature Conservation Importance, Teazle Wood hosts endangered species such as the Great Crested Newt and the unusually-named plant Green Hound’s-tongue. The wood has a rich history of human occupation, from pre-Roman times right up to its use as a Victorian brickyard – members of the Rothschild family, several of whom were keen gardeners, would allegedly come in person to Teazle Wood to buy flowerpots from the Woodbridge Brickfield – the heavy, magnesium-rich London clay was apparently perfect for making pots that ‘fed’ the contained plants. Teazle Wood is uniquely placed for its many fascinating aspects to benefit a broad spectrum of people. Adjoining the North Leatherhead

community, two schools back onto it, as does Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People. Combat Stress, a charity supporting British Armed Forces Veterans with mental health problems, is close by. Lucy was overwhelmed when her pleas for help were met with a surge of support. Several hundred individuals, businesses and organisations rallied to join her in championing the saving and nurturing of Teazle Wood. Against all the odds, donations, loans and inventive fundraising events enabled the newly-formed ‘Friends of Teazle Wood’ to act just in time. A pre-auction offer was accepted, and, two days after the cycle races, the purchase was completed. Now converting to a charity - the Teazle Wood Trust - the Friends have enlisted expert advice regarding early conservation steps. From archaeology to lichen, surveys are underway, and a programme of gentle improvements has started; supervised by the Lower Mole Countryside Management Project, Wates staff volunteered to clear litter and improve the entrance to Teazle Wood, and fly-tipping is carefully being removed with guidance from Froglife and the Surrey Amphibian and Reptile Group. “Surrey must cherish its remaining natural spaces,” says Lucy. “We are so lucky to live near countryside that revives, inspires and instructs. This was a tough campaign, but a worthwhile one that united people from all walks of life. For the sake of ecology and the well-being of future generations, we cannot let places like Teazle Wood slip away.” The “Save Teazle Wood” campaign is still fundraising to finish paying for the acquisition of the wood. The Medicine Garden Paul Studholme from The Medicine Garden, Cobham talks to Cobham Life

I

have been passionate about plants and gardens since I was fifteen. I remember spending a lot of time at a local garden centre just ‘being’ amongst the plants. This early love of plants manifested in my choosing to study horticulture at college, and then setting up my own successful landscaping business.

In 2006 I discovered this derelict and overgrown walled garden. Built CIRCA 1850, it was originally the kitchen garden for Cobham Park. I instantly fell in love with it but only had two weeks to put together a competitive proposal to try and win the lease. A friend and myself came up with the seed of an idea – a secret destination where people could be inspired, slow down and nurture themselves. Together with another friend we shaped the idea and submitted our proposal. Amazingly we won the lease! It took us four years to clear the site, repair the walls and rebuild the old back sheds. Our idea grew, took shape and became The Medicine Garden – a place of beauty where people could come together in a community, a place to relax, play, and on every visit take home a piece of ‘good medicine’. Part of our vision was to attract and support a community of small, like-minded businesses, housed in and around the courtyard. Renting out these spaces helped us to part-fund the ongoing renovations and import even more good medicine into the site. In June 2010 we opened to the public with a simple garden design, a garden shop, a cafe and a handful of other small businesses. We also thought it would be fun to host different events in the garden. At the end of our first

2 6 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

summer we held a Garden Party (now an annual occasion), followed by a Halloween celebration and then a Xmas Fair. Fairs, special events and shows are now part of the garden’s rhythm. In 2012 The Medicine garden was lucky enough to win the Countryside Alliance Enterprise Award for the South East of England. On top of this we launched our farm shop (The Larder), the new Garden Shop, The Treatment Room, Art Shed and Zen Dome. We also opened the newly renovated Hothouse Café in its originally envisioned space. This garden is all about community. We are so lucky to have found this Walled Garden but our dream wouldn’t have come to life if it wasn’t for the amazing support from the local community and from those that visit and champion our little project. Thank you all. We cannot begin to tell you how steep our learning curve has been, and continues to be, on so many fronts. However, one of the most important things that we have learned is that everyone who walks into the garden also brings a piece of good medicine with them. We continue to seek out potential funding streams to help grow the main garden. We are always open to new ways of funding the ongoing maintenance and development of the free communal space through grants, sponsorship and donations. We have still only revealed a small part of the overall idea and vision for the project. Winter Reds Jeremy Blood from Surrey Wine School recommends some warming red wines to try this winter season.

W

hat’s the best way to brighten up this gloomy time of the year? Well how about turning up the fire, dimming the lights and relaxing with a warming glass of something special? This is the time of the year to put aside those delicate wines and reach for something with real power. Two grape varieties made for the winter months are syrah and grenache. They both match brilliantly with seasonal foods such as stews, game and roasted meats. Syrah as it is known in France, especially the Rhone Valley, is a grape that is rich in black pepper, spices, herbs and liquorice. Outside of Europe the grape is more commonly known as Shiraz and is usually richer, with more powerful black fruit characteristics and chocolate flavour, so why not try: 2009, Aymura , Elqui Valley,Syrah, Chile- (Marks and Spencer, £11.99. Perfect ripening conditions are found in Elqui Valley, the most northern part of the country where it is cool with exceptionally clear skies. Some maturing in American and French oak barrels. A really complex wine.

2011, False Bay, Shiraz, South Africa, - (The VineYard Dorking £6.99). Superb value for a top quality wine grown on the Cape in Somerset West. The wine has real elegance for a new world Shiraz and reminded me of a Rhone style wine. Grenache produces high octane, spicy, peppery and gamey wines in its Rhone homeland. It is also widely grown in Spain where it is known as Garnacha.

Why not try this great value wine from Tesco: 2011, Finest Old Vine Garnacha, Spain, (Tesco £7.99). This wine is often reduced further and is a steal at any price, with classic flavours of black cherry and plum. Drink with a lovely leg of lamb. If you’d like to learn more, come along to Surrey Wine School’s Winter Reds tasting being held on Thursday 31 January 2013, 7pm9pm, Stepping Stones, Westhumble Street, Dorking, RH5 6BS. The evolution of superb dining When you are as passionate about food as Steve Drake, chef proprietor of Drake’s in Ripley, it shows.

I

t shows in the quality of the food served at his restaurant, appreciated by their growing number of regular customers, and, in turn, it is recognised by food guides and critics. Drake’s has been awarded Wine List of the Year in the 2013 Good Food Guide and for the ninth year running has been given a Michelin star and three AA Rosettes. In 2012 it was placed 38th in the Sunday Times 100 Best Restaurants – 40 places higher than in 2010. Steve’s style of innovative, contemporary British food is constantly evolving and a recent fact-finding trip to Japan has provided a wealth of additional inspiration. Guests enjoy the unusual ingredients like Dorset wasabi and black garlic that feature on the menu alongside mushroom ‘soil’ and red cabbage ‘ketchup’. The restaurant is privately owned by Steve and his wife Serina. A recent refit of the main restaurant interior has proved very popular, as has the oak panelled bar. The latest addition is a small boutique, where customers can purchase gifts and items of kitchenware and champagnes used in the restaurant. Drake’s is a restaurant for all seasons; in winter months or when the weather dictates that the restaurant’s beautiful walled garden is not a viable option, the cosy bar is perfect for pre and post dinner drinks. Or on a summer’s day, when the garden is in full display, guests can take advantage of the lovely terrace. Where possible, Steve sources ingredients locally, and likes to use produce at its peak of seasonal availability. In addition, the restaurant’s kitchen garden is now producing some of their herbs

3 2 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

and vegetables, which are used for unique creative touches such as Sorrel mayonnaise or perhaps pea and mint ice cream. “Creativity and simplicity of flavour” are two key elements of Steve’s food. On Friday and Saturday evenings his legendary ‘Flavour Discovery’ or ‘Flavour Journey’ tasting menus are served – a great opportunity to try a varying range of dishes. The beauty of the six course Flavour Journey menu (and also the nine course Flavour Discovery menu) is that the menu is constantly evolving. Steve embraces and combines flavour and balance with the changing seasons, using the finest produce to surprise and delight his guests. Diners can opt for the sommelier to select glasses of wine to match each course of the tasting menu or choose their own choice from the eclectic wine list, Drakes in open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday and lunch Wednesday to Saturday. In addition to the full a la carte, there is an excellent value set menu available at lunchtime. The award-winning wine list at Drake’s is eclectic and sourced from smaller producers, many of them using biodynamic production methods. House wines start at just £18 a bottle and there is a wide range available by the glass, starting from £5.50. Booking is recommended, especially at the weekend. Feltonfleet School is a co-educational independent day, weekly and flexi boarding school for up to 390 children aged 3-13 years. It has a deserved reputation as being in the very front rank of prep schools and prides itself on developing confident and happy children with a zest for life and a love of learning.

he school is situated on a beautiful 25 acre site of pine woodland, games fields and landscaped play areas, conveniently located near the A3 and A245 roads, providing easy access to both West London and the Walton and Weybridge areas. They also run daily coach and mini-bus services from a number of destinations. The school’s recent ISI Inspection Report (Jan 2013) highlights Feltonfleet’s excellence in all areas of educational provision. The school is extremely proud of the report which describes the pupils’ “exemplary attitudes to learning”, their “confidence”, “maturity” and their “excellent inter-personal skills”. Pastoral care is “of the highest quality” and the report goes on to describe the school’s team of dedicated and well qualified teachers as “exemplary role models” who “empower pupils to achieve their potential in and out of the classroom”. The report describes Feltonfleet as a school with “academic thoroughness and a strong work ethic”, where “pupils benefit from a varied and creative educational experience, in which talent is cultivated and service to others is the norm”. Headmaster, Mr Alastair Morrison, who joined Feltonfleet in September from Fettes Prep, Edinburgh, says, “We are delighted with the Inspection Report. It is a wonderful endorsement of all that is being done so very well in our special school. As a father to three young girls myself, I know that choosing the right schooling for one’s children is the most important decision parents will make. I encourage you to visit Feltonfleet and see for yourselves, our wonderful learning community in action”. Prospective parents are invited to visit the school at their forthcoming Open Morning on Saturday 2nd March 9.30am-12 noon. Please see the school’s website or contact the admissions registrar, Mrs Sue Lewin, if you require further details.

Feltonfleet is a co-educational school because they have every confidence in the benefit that girls and boys reap from learning, playing and working alongside each other. Their firm belief is that co-education prepares young people to build successful relationships and better equips them for a life spent at work. In a nutshell, Feltonfleet offers a balanced, challenging and wide-ranging curriculum. Their “excellent”-rated boarding provision, which includes a Breakfast and After School Club, allows boarders to flourish whilst offering flexibility and support to working parents. ISL Surrey Achieves Highest Level in IPC Accreditation The International School of London (ISL) Surrey is one of seven schools of over 1500 schools worldwide and the only school in the UK to achieve the highest level in the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) accreditation. ISL progressed from its initial Developing level to Mastering in all nine criteria assessed in just two years.

M

artin Skelton, Founding Director of the IPC, stated that ISL Surrey’s rapid progress ‘demonstrates how a school community can, with focus and willingness to model learning, develop considerably in a relatively short space time. You and your colleagues have set a fantastic example to other schools.” Further, he stated that “ISL is now a very important symbol of everything we stand for.” During their accreditation visit, the team studied the school’s self-review, observed 30 lessons, spoke with a wide range of parents, teachers and students, the Head of School and Head of Primary, team leaders, school board and non-teaching staff, and studied a wide range of documents and policies. The accreditation team noted that “The school has a very clear focus on learning which forms the foundation of everything that happens…. All teachers in the school make explicit the learning intentions for subjects, personal development and international mindedness in their planning. These learning intentions are made clear to the children at the beginning of each lesson and referred to during the learning. Teachers take time to talk to individual children throughout the lesson about the intended learning and to explain the success criteria.” The commitment to international mindedness and mother tongue languages was viewed as an important part of the school’s ethos. “The school has a deep commitment to developing and supporting international mindedness within its community…. The huge investment of time and resources to the teaching of mother tongue illustrates the school’s commitment to supporting its international community. The teaching within these mother tongue lessons supports the children’s understanding of the vocabulary used in the IPC units and also helps the children deepen their understanding of their own culture.” Rigorous learning and high expectations were also commended. “Teachers and children are enthusiastically engaged in their learning across all age ranges. The teachers have high expectations of the children. The bar is set high and the children are supported by their class teachers, learning assistants, language and specialist teachers. We observed children enjoying their learning and this deep engagement in the learning activities helped to ensure rigour.” 4 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

In assessing the balance of knowledge, skills and reflection leading to understanding, the team commented, “There is evidence in all classrooms of practices which help children to extend their knowledge, to practice their skills and children are also given time to reflect on their learning. Through their reflection on previous themes, the children make connections which will deepen their understanding….” In summation, “The school uses the personal goals and the international goals of the IPC to help the children develop the attitudes, skills and understanding which will in turn help them become responsible contributors to both local and global communities. This desire to prepare children to become global citizens is something which characterizes the way in which all stakeholders respond to each other and is a significant feature of the school.” Commenting on this report, Dr Jim Doran, Head of School said, “The focus on learning, real learning, is extraordinary at our school, from our youngest to our oldest students.” To view a complete copy of the report, please refer to the school’s website: http://www.islschools.org/surrey/curriculum.php. ISL Surrey was also recently commended as an Ofsted Outstanding school, achieving outstanding in 10 of 11 categories. ISL Surrey currently accepts students from Nursery through grade 8, age 2 through 14. The school is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme and is adding a grade each year, building towards the International Baccalaureate diploma by 2015. ISL Surrey prides itself in its small school family atmosphere, and its low student/teacher ratio, allowing for differentiated instruction and individualised support. The school is situated on a 10 acre campus and located in a beautiful wooded area in Surrey, 35 minutes by train to London, with easy access to London airports. ISL Surrey offers limited bursaries for local students. To make an appointment to visit at another time, please telephone 01483-750409 or email admissions@islsurrey.org. Why choosing an independent school leads to top university places words Peter B Hamilton, Headmaster of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School

I

t is getting inreasingly difficult to get into the top universities - competition is fierce with thousands of students applying for each place. It is worth taking a step back to review how parents can best support their children through the daunting process of UCAS applications, and ultimately achieve the university place of their choice.

demands of higher education. Many will have debated at The Hague with the Model United Nations, played London concert venues, taken plays to Fringe festivals, and competed at national level in rugby, fencing or lacrosse all relevant to their personal statements. Participating in such activities demonstrates a willingness to get involved, an aptitude for tackling complex challenges, and a social awareness of the world around them; all qualities expected by university admissions teams.

Instilling the right attitudes and approach is paramount in achieving success. This is one of the many strengths of the independent school system. Academic excellence is a crucial factor as university offers are conditional on achieving specific results. At interview, however, intellectual rigour and curiosity will help your child stand out from the crowd. The independent system fosters that from day one, encouraging students to go beyond the basic curriculum, discover their own interests in the world and pursue them. Students can devise their own coursework titles, choose additional languages, and undertake contemporary scientific research simply unavailable to them elsewhere. Having the support and resources to make these choices increases their value as a prospective undergraduate.

Many independent schools offer dedicated careers teams, who will discuss your child’s university options, enabling them to make the best choices possible for their future success and happiness. As your child progresses through the public examination years, having someone to guide them through their choice of subjects can make or break their application. The most competitive courses - Law, Medicine, and Economics - require you to take a specific set of A Levels just to apply. Excellent pastoral care can also ensure the whole UCAS process won’t seem as daunting. Students often receive one-to-one attention from tutors who know them personally, producing stronger and more successful applications.

Independent schools also help develop intellectual independence and encourage students to have the confidence to articulate their opinions, particularly in the Sixth Form. This can make a noticeable difference when students attend interviews. They are better informed, more relaxed and self-assured than other candidates.

Choosing an independent school means more than ensuring your child has access to the best facilities and educational support, it is an investment in their future that will develop the life-skills they will need for future successes, and greatly increase their chance of securing a place at a coveted university.

Academic successes, however, will only take them so far. The best universities are on the look out for students who have already distinguished themselves across a range of extra-curricular programmes. The independent sector is fortunate to be able to offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities, which can provide a wealth of additional experiences and skills that will equip your child for the 8 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

port will be high on your child’s list of priorities when it comes to senior schools! You will understand that sport plays a pivotal role in child development. Sport develops teamwork and confidence through mastering new skills. It helps form fast friendships and the habit of participation. It is the key to a healthy lifestyle. The relaxation it provides may be a crucial antidote in years to come to the fierce pressures that are the norm in many careers. Your child will grow through sport and discover a source of joy and passion that can last a lifetime. So consider: does the school have a sporting ethos in which fair play, as well as excellence is considered an important aspect of education? Has it the sort of talented coaches that can inspire and pass on skills and disciplines to youngsters? Does it provide opportunities for your child to develop as a sportsman across a wide range of sports? At the elite end, are there students playing at county, regional and national level? Are there academic PE options at GSCE and A-Level that can open up career opportunities in performance, psychology and the business of sport: marketing, sports media, and research? Is sport delivered primarily by the PE staff or does the whole school commit to games, with all pupils and staff are out on the pitches together? ‘Whole school games’ has several advantages. It allows the pupils to see subject teachers as more than narrow specialists. It promotes warm pupil-teacher relations. It provides children with admirable role models who share their enthusiasms. It also makes it far easier to recruit external coaches to support the outstanding specialist teachers. Some schools focus on high-end performance; others – like Taylors’ - provide a ‘developmental’ approach, focused on participation for the younger children and developing that into performance for the older ones. All boys (even the not particularly “sporty”) find something they can enjoy that

1 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

becomes part of the fabric of their lives. This breadth is complemented by an ethos that includes increasing the number of pupils representing their county, region or indeed performing in national squads. “Facilities” are secondary – look at Bradman or Pelé! If a school really wants to offer rowing, equestrianism, golf, fencing, fives, windsurfing, swimming, croquet, sailing, and sub-aqua sports - it will! Most schools offer competitive sport to all pupils. How many teams are put out? What range of sports is offered (individual and team)? Will your child get a game? Is the approach ‘win at all costs’ or a developmental one? Children learn nothing from a 10-0 drubbing. They learn very little from a 10 wicket victory. Check out the fixture list. Is it the same as a few years ago? A dynamic sports school will not rest easy on its laurels and retain traditional fixtures if they result in embarrassingly easy wins. Look for a school that develops its fixture list so that the children may at first experience narrow defeat against strong opposition, but then be motivated by this to raise the bar so that their confidence, skills and performance improve year-on. Many schools offer scholarships for sport. What does their scholars’ programme actually offer? The best programmes support and improve high level youngsters and also encompass all-rounders and specialists. They focus on supporting and improving the pupil – not the school’s results! Taylors’ has a dynamic programme where scholars enjoy additional classes including yoga and ballet – for strength and conditioning. A personal mentor meets each scholar weekly to review progress and discuss performance. Sport is a common language that cuts across social and national divides and provides life-changing experiences. Pupils learn respect, adherence to a set of rules, to win modestly and lose with dignity. Few lives are failure-free and the resilience that a child needs to overcome life’s knockbacks and go on to success is often first learned on the sports field.

A

bbot’s Hill School is an independent day school for girls aged 3-16 and boys aged 3-5 situated in seventy acres of parkland on the outskirts of Hemel Hempstead. The School has a strong record of academic success and its aim is to educate, challenge and develop confident and independent girls. The recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report (January 2012) noted that “small classes, in which pupils feel well known and supported, enable them to

fulfil their potential” and “the quality of pupils’ personal development is outstanding”. The School also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities so that pupils can develop their talents outside the classroom. 2012 highlights included a bold production of The Tempest; a live news broadcast for BBC News School Report; a successful Science Extravaganza in the Junior department and the 1st Lacrosse team becoming Eastern Regional Small Schools

The perfect solution to the boarding paradox?

J

words by Oliver Bullock Assistant Head, Director of Pastoral Care and Welfare, Chaplain, Beechwood Park School

ust seven years old! There I was, armed with a large turquoise painted trunk and a wooden tuck box, and dressed in my grey flannel blazer and cap, deposited at my prep school. It all seemed like a great adventure; the stuff you read about in books, but for me it was now real. Yes, it was to be two and a half weeks before I saw my parents again. It was the second evening when it sank in. I had endured lessons – they didn’t feature in the adventure books; I realised that I was away from home, and I would be for the next two and a half weeks (minus the day and a half that had been covered). I was homesick! This was, however, the first and last time that I was homesick. Instead, I look back fondly upon my time as a boarder; the opportunities were phenomenal. It has only been recently that I have discovered another side to this coin. I had only seen things from my perspective; I was a child and adults are good at concealing their true feelings. However, as time has passed, my mother has admitted how difficult she found sending me away to school and I had been totally unaware of this. Given these emotions one wondered why they took the decisive step that I should board. But they were quite unequivocal; they felt they were doing the best for me, and this involved significant sacrifice on their part. Looking back, I am extremely grateful for the opportunities. For any parent, the thought of sending a child away to school must invoke an extraordinary diversity of responses and emotions. The love for a child means that parting the child from a parent can feel like a mini-bereavement, particularly when the child is young. A Boarding education presents a wealth of opportunities, not only in terms of facilities and encouraging independence, but also in social interaction and the demands of personal organisation. Now as Assistant Head at Beechwood Park, a leading, co-educational preparatory day, weekly and flexi-boarding school situated near St Albans, Hertfordshire, and having also been Head of Boarding, I recognise the paradox of contrasting feelings when the concept of ‘boarding’ arises. There’s the child who waxes lyrical about the experience, the parent whose lips quiver at the thought, and there are cases where parents have different views on whether or not their child should board. Given such conflicting emotions, is there a compromise? A perfect solution? Many schools acknowledge these juxtapositions; boarding has changed. Boarding no longer means packing a child off to school for weeks on end.

There is a happy medium - ‘flexi-boarding’ - which can take different forms. The flexi-boarding model at Beechwood Park is as follows: children choose to board two, three or four nights a week; they can choose which weekday nights and these need not be consecutive. Each boarder has their own bed and can personalise their area. The nights they board can change weekly, fitting in with what is convenient and helpful for parents. Some parents view it as a rather luxurious form of babysitting! The word ‘choose’ above is appropriate, but may seem surprising. It is the children who are desperate to board; they choose! Children are welcome to board weekly, but on nights when they are not boarding they go home just as the day children. So why do these children choose to board when there is no necessity and, one might suggest, no logical reason? Just as children look forward to having a sleepover with their friends, they look forward to boarding. But boarding offers so much more than a sleepover! Yes, there is homework, but staff members are always available to help. Some children opt to board on nights when they have more difficult preps so they can seek ‘expert’ help. After homework is finished, there is a huge range of activities on offer to the children, including football and rounders, to more peculiar options such as ‘Escape from Colditz’, ‘Stuck in the Sahara’ and ‘Great Balls of Fire’. To find out what fun this organised mayhem really is you need to board at Beechwood! After activities, before bedtime there’s the chance to use the Games and Common Rooms, or enjoy toast and hot chocolate. It’s at this time that one observes particularly the laughter, camaraderie and friendship amongst boarders; no surprise, therefore, that it is the children themselves who are so keen to board. The model clearly works for children, but does it work for parents? Would this have helped my mother in her sadness over sending me away to school? Some parents struggle with children boarding consecutive nights. Children often ask to board more and parental response can be ‘I couldn’t bare the thought of being away from you.’ There are distinct positives for parents; with the flexible system, parents change the nights their children board each week. It would appear that there is a solution to the boarding dilemma: an answer which satisfies the demands and emotions of parents and children alike, and which enables the advantages of a boarding education whilst removing what may be regarded as the disadvantages for many.

nother busy term has recently ended at Beechwood Park – the day, weekly and flexi-boarding preparatory school for girls and boys aged 4 – 13 situated in Markyate, near St Albans. Once again it has been full of new challenges and a wide variety of achievements by

the pupils. For the first time ever Beechwood Park entered a team of young mathematicians for the annual Prep Schools Maths Competition at Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood and they won the trophy by beating 13 other local preparatory schools. Also for the first time pupils from Year 4 through to Year 8 have been taking part in the Mangahigh Maths Challenge, and came fifth out of 900 schools in the British Isles. This is an outstanding achievement. Inspired by the summer’s Olympics pupils participated in a number of new sports. For instance the IAPS Sailing Regatta was added to the fixture list and a talented team of young table tennis players came third in the Hertfordshire

County Table Tennis Championships. Pupils have also notched up notable successes in golf, swimming, rugby, hockey, netball, fencing, trampolining and martial arts. Excursions, workshops and talks by visiting experts take place frequently at the school. These add to the culturally rich environment at Beechwood Park, where 140 pupils took external music examinations during the term. The school benefits from a beautiful parkland setting in an eighteenth century mansion. A visit is strongly recommended. The Headmaster, Patrick Atkinson, is always happy to meet prospective parents. Nearby at Little Cheverells is the recently refurbished and enlarged Beechwood Park Montessori Nursery. Beechwood Park is well served by an extensive bus service linking up many of the local towns and villages and bringing children to the school. www.beechwoodpark.net

Exam tips from Isadora Platoni, year 10, Sydenham High School “Although exams are a scary prospect I feel well prepared for my GCSEs. The school teaches us how to revise in year 7 and 8 through lessons given by my school’s learning strategies department. We are taught how to make ‘revision products’ which are easily remembered summaries of the things we have to revise. These can be mindmaps, file cards, posters, games - whatever suits our learning style. We learn these techniques early so we have plenty of time to practise them before GCSEs and the teachers include these approaches in their lessons. I use a lot of mindmaps because they show connections between ideas. We also get given a Revision Guide before each set of exams which is a booklet that lists all the things we have to revise. I find this helpful because it helps me to plan my revision.”

David Beckham TRAVELS WITH

reitling has chosen David Beckham as the face of its Transocean Chronograph Unitime worldtimer watch. The new campaign establishes a long-term partnership between the innovative and historic Swiss brand and one of the world’s most celebrated icons.

One of the world’s most successful sportsmen and style icons, Beckham stars in the Breitling advert featuring a highly evocative visual shot by renowned American photographer Anthony Mandler. On the runway of the Mojave Air & Space Port in California, the striking image shows Beckham standing in front of a private jet wearing his Transocean Chronograph Unitime. Through its long-established ties with aviation, the sky has always been the limit for Breitling – as the brand has proved throughout its history by creating a number of travel watches including the famous Unitime in the 1950s and 60s. In the spring of 2012, it took things to the next level by presenting the

Transocean Chronograph Unitime. Equipped with the new Manufacture Breitling Calibre B05 featuring a patented mechanism, this world-timer chronograph has asserted itself as the ultimate travel watch thanks to its double disc enabling permanent readings of the time in all 24 timezones, and its ultra-user-friendly crown-operated correction system.

BRINGING THE WORLD TO THE WRIST Breitling reasserted its horological mastery by launching a “world time” chronograph equipped with a new calibre entirely developed and produced in-house. Thanks to its double disc, the Transocean Chronograph Unitime simultaneously and constantly indicates the time in all 24 timezones. An innovative system based on a patented mechanism enables the user, when changing timezone, to adjust all the indications in one smooth and easy move by simply turning the crown. An exceptional new instrument has made its grand entry into the world of exclusive fine mechanisms.

TIME FOR TRAVEL While the chronograph and instruments for professionals have established themselves since 1884 as Breitling’s domain of excellence, travel watches have also played an important role in the history of the brand with the winged B. In sharing the finest hours in the conquest of the skies, Breitling accompanied the boom in air transport and longdistance travel. During the 1950s and 60s, the brand distinguished itself by introducing a sophisticated model named Unitime, a selfwinding “world time” watch that has since become a much sought-after collector’s item. Today, Breitling is further extending its invitation to enjoy travel and performances by combining universal time and the chronograph function within a new model in the Transocean range – a collection reflecting all

the refinement and prestige of luxury long-distance journeys. Associating innovative technology with stylish aesthetics, the Transocean Chronograph Unitime is distinguished by its modern, pure lines and the infinite care lavished on the smallest details – such as its dial bearing a globe pattern. It comes in steel or red gold versions with the city bezel available in several languages. That unmistakable first-class feeling on the wrist.

PERFORMANCE AND COMFORT In creating Calibre 01, the Breitling engineers devised the world’s best chronograph movement. In developing the new Calibre 05, based on the same high-performance architecture, they have also reinvented the world time mechanism by equipping it with an adjustment system boasting

unprecedented user friendliness. The Transocean Chronograph Unitime features two mobile discs: a 24-hour disc and a disc bearing the names of 24 cities representing the world’s 24 time-zones. The time shown by the central hands corresponds to that of the time-zone displayed at 12 o’clock. The city disc also bears indications serving to take account of “summer” or daylight saving time (DST).

and without disturbing any chronograph timing operations in progress.

When the user changes timezone, he need only pull out the crown and turn it forwards or backwards in one-hour increments in order to correct the hours, the city disc and the 24-hour disc in one smooth move. Meanwhile, the calendar is easily adjusted in both directions to the date corresponding to local time. During these manoeuvres, the minute and seconds hands continue turning normally without any loss of precision,

100 YEARS OF ASTON MARTIN

Aston Martin launches global celebrations marking a century of success

THE LUXURY BRAND IS MARKING THE OFFICIAL ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR OF ITS FOUNDING 100 YEARS AGO.

L

ondon marked the start of a year-long celebration of all things Aston Martin, with a ceremony in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews – the original home of the company that went on to become Aston Martin, founded on 15th January 1913. Joining with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust to unveil a commemorative plaque, the sports car maker is lining up a special centenary edition of its new ultimate GT – the Vanquish – alongside the oldest Aston Martin in existence, A3. The event recalls the day 100 years ago when founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford saw their new automotive venture incorporated as ‘Bamford and

Martin Ltd’. Production of the very first Aston Martin car, known as ‘Coal Scuttle’ commenced soon after. The ‘Aston’ element was inspired by Lionel Martin’s passion for hill climb competitions, in particular the Aston Clinton hill climb in Buckinghamshire. Aston Martin CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “I am proud to be celebrating 100 years of heritage and the best of British craftsmanship. “Aston Martin is known around the world for our leading design combined with advanced technology. Ours is the coolest luxury car brand on the planet and I am looking forward to our second century of building the world’s most desirable sports cars.” F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3 5 9

F E AT U R E

Speaking at the unveiling, Roger Carey, Chairman of the Aston Martin Heritage Trust said: “It’s fitting, I think, that we have both the newest and oldest Aston Martins in existence here at Henniker Mews, where this remarkable story began 100 years ago. This is where the workshops were first located and the Aston Martin Heritage Trust felt it was important to record the centenary by creating and displaying a plaque commemorating the start of such an iconic car business.” Aston Martin Chairman, David Richards said: “It’s great to be back at the place where it all started. The Aston Martin story reaches a significant milestone in 2013 with our unique heritage and fiercely independent tradition inspiring exciting chapters yet to come. “We look forward to sharing this milestone with our team, our partners, our customers and Aston Martin enthusiasts with events taking place worldwide over the next 12 months.” In the UK, a week-long Aston Martin festival will take place from 15th July to 21st July. Designed to appeal to owners and enthusiasts of the brand, the Centenary Week will include ‘open house’ activities at Aston Martin’s exclusive Gaydon headquarters, including factory-based events and driving tours and will culminate in a 1,000-guest ‘birthday party’ on Saturday 20th July and a spectacular Centenary gathering in Central London on Sunday 21st July. This highlight of the centenary celebrations will be held in partnership with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and the Aston Martin Owners Club and will feature 100 of the brand’s most iconic cars in a multi-million pound timeline display. The event will also see one of the largest gatherings of Aston Martins in the 100-year history of the great British marque. In addition, appearances at iconic events throughout 2013 including Nürburgring 24-Hours, Silverstone Classic, Villa D’Este, Le Mans 24-Hours and Pebble Beach will ensure that the celebration is truly global. 6 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

FASHION FIT FOR THE OSCARS W A Guide to looking like a star on the Red Carpet

ith this year’s Oscars taking place on Sunday 24th February, want to hit up your next big event like an A-list celeb? We consulted top fashion and beauty experts to find out how you can take a paparazzi-approved pic, avoid wardrobe malfunction, and rock any red carpet.

It’s all About the Cocktail Dress You likely don’t have the six-figure budget or 13-person glam squad that your favourite stars do, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look stunning. Celeb stylist Phillip Bloch — who wrote The Shopping Diet: Spend Less & Get More— says that it’s really all about the dress, anyway. “Have a cocktail dress always at the ready,” he advises. “Cocktail has become the new black tie, so you can always get away with a cute little black dress. And that LBD can be green or blue or purple.” The best 6 8 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

part? You don’t have to spend a fortune on it. “With Facebook photo tagging, real women can’t always wear the same exact dress twice anymore,” he says. “Find clothes that are transformational. Don’t buy something you will only wear once. Know what you can do with it afterwards.” Draw a Line Between Sexy and tarty There’s nothing wrong with being sexy or seductive, but you don’t want to look tarty. To avoid showing too much skin with your dress, as with your makeup, be sure you are playing up one feature and not all of them. If you have a high slit, we advise against doing a plunging neckline. If you have a backless dress, keep the hemline from creeping up too high. If nothing else, show your shoulders. That’s a great feature on anyone. Think before opting for a skintight frock. If you go with a ‘standing dress,’ you might not be able to dance, sit, or eat. Don’t Overdo the Makeup You may think that this is the time to go all-out

FA S H I O N

NAOMI WATTS

JESSICA CHASTAIN

with your makeup. Whatever you do, don’t. “This is not the time to try something new, like 12-inch fake eyelashes … A little bit goes a long way” Bloch says, adding that you should pick one thing that’s easy to finesse but doesn’t require constant upkeep. “Bold red lips are great, but don’t do this and a smoky eye. Pick one. You only want to take a lip gloss and maybe some mascara with you, so know your limits.” Ying Chu, Marie Claire’s beauty director, offers up a great trick for intensifying your eyes for photos without looking overly made up: “Take a black kohl pencil and dot it along your lash line, between your eyelashes, before applying mascara.” Go for Some Killer Heels Always wear a heel when venturing to a party, noting Gwyneth Paltrow’s penchant for wearing sky-high seven-inchers. The higher the better. Platforms are the easiest in this set to walk in, but test them out in advance — wear them around the house for a couple hours — to make sure you can stand and walk in them without toppling over. Also, make sure the shoes are padded so they are a bit more comfortable. If You Can’t, Opt for a Wedge If you know you won’t make it two steps without a rolled ankle in stilettos, wedges are a good compromise. They are obviously more comfortable, or you can go with a thicker heel. In rare cases, flats work. A flat works really well with a ball gown or a full skirt, but it doesn’t look chic with a fitted dress or, say, a mermaid silhouette.” And make it a jeweled sandal, not just a flip flop. Tame those Flyaways If you plan on wearing your hair in a smooth updo or ponytail, like Blake Lively so often

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

does, “toss a clear brow gel in your evening clutch. Her favorite go-to product? The new Flyaway Tamer from John Frieda Brush the wand over flyaways around your hairline and part whenever you’re checking your lipstick. “No Photoshop needed later!” Make Your Best Pap-Worthy Pose Whether paparazzi are swarming or you are taking a few photos yourself, you want to make sure you look your best. Always puts an arm on your hip and lean against the person you are posing with … You lose a lot of your body and it makes you look slimmer.” It’s all about the grin. “Smile, or flirt, with your eyes,” she says. “Don’t smile too big with your mouth.” Be Strategic with Jewellery Always focus on one statement bold piece per look, but be careful — don’t overcrowd your neck, arms, and fingers with jewellery. If you’re wearing earrings, you can wear a bracelet, and if you are wearing a necklace, you can wear a ring,” she says. Case in point: Heidi Klum, who paired her striking Lorraine Schwartz diamond and ruby necklace (worth $3 million!) with only a pinky ring. Don’t Get on the Worst-Dressed List Be wary of making too bold a statement, like a white dress to a friend’s wedding or a crazy new trend that hasn’t made its way to popular culture just yet. What is a head-to-toe catwalk look that has just come off the runway at London Fashion Week may not necessarily look stylish in a real situation, also this month they are showing their Autumn/Winter 2013 Collections so you don’t want to be out of season, and end up on the worst-dressed list. So... you want to meet someone this year?

YOU’VE GOT A LIFE NOW GET A LOVE!

Exclusive drinks parties, for single, sophisticated, successful guests. No games, no gimmicks, just drinks. Meet new friends whilst looking for ‘the one’

Y

ou’ve got the best home life and enough invitations to fill a diary - just nobody to spoil, to laugh with, no-one to hold your hand & no-one to ask what they did today. You have a wonderful life; full of friends, family and children, but have yet to find ‘the one’ a romantic life filled with passion as grand as that which lives in your own heart. You have done internet dating – met married who said they were single, the 10 years older or 3 stone heavier than their photo, the nose-bleedly boring, the perfect but ‘just no chemistry’, the bitter divorcee still telling the story of his/her ex and how he/she doesn’t ever want to get married again... the ‘seperated’ person who is in a candy-store of divorcees in the internet and who has been multi-dating for 5 years... the too ‘mature’ chasing the too young, the aged lothario who thinks he/she is hot stuff, the 30 year old who wants a sugar mummy/daddy, the arrogant, the poor artist who really could do with someone to pay their rent, the one who lives abroad (and you have children here), one who has an allconsuming hobby, the great body but awful mind, the great mind but awful body... the friends who could have been lovers, the lovers who should have been friends... you’ve met them all, but where, oh where is the lady/man who is nice but not boring, interesting but not neurotic; self confident but not arrogant, is organised without having compulsions, is normal, and real and honest and straightforward, is sociable enough but enjoys the privacy of being together as a couple? They are out there... love is out there but you have to be ‘out there too - he/she is at these events looking for you!

dating; just the best way to meet someone naturally – in person over a drink - and they come recommended through a trusted network of friends and their friends’ friends. Since we out-grew ‘disco’ and had kids and important jobs, many of us want to go out and meet the ‘right kind of people’ and hopefully, ‘the One’ in a relaxed, comfortable environment. One local lady wanted to do just that so she held low-key sophisticated parties in her home for the last 6 years. The parties were hugely successful and word of mouth spread and they grew year by year, and by 2011, there were 180 guests. Every guest said they wanted more friends to come, and wanted to have singles events monthly. So; since then she has arranged drinks parties in some very select cocktail lounges and private members clubs in London for 2 years - and they just keep getting bigger! This is old fashioned social networking at its best – with the concept that you are more likely to meet someone special through a trusted network of friends; and friends-of-friends. These singles drinks evenings are attended by many single, elegant and eligible people who, like you, believe that love is out there, and that looking for it should be fun and fabulous! They are relaxed evenings; just like going out for a normal drink in a smart cocktail bar except everyone there is lovely, single, and eligible! There are now regular Exclusive drinks parties for single, successful, sophisticated people who bring their eminently eligible friends with them just to meet you, creating an ever changing circle of gorgeous, pre-vetted people who are making wonderful and exciting connections. Come and meet new friends, and even better – a gorgeous partner!

If you are happy, no hang ups, no baggage, no tissues or issues. If you are single or divorced - and now you want to meet new friends whilst looking for ‘the one’... If you are unashamedly romantic; have had one taste of love, and got your appetite back... have known love and are ready to find it again, if you have left your emotional baggage in the past, and have been fortified by experience rather than embittered by it - you have come to the right place!. He / she is at these events looking for you!!

There have been many, many couples dating as a result - three engagements and one marriage so far! Do be brave and make the most of the opportunity! Far easier to meet someone in a cocktail bar in a relaxed atmosphere, than to be set up on a date by a friend or pay thousands of pounds to an agency, or trawl through a website to find ‘the one’.

This feels more ‘natural’ somehow, doesn’t it – ‘chemistry’ cant be detected on websites – you have to meet in person - its just “something in the way she moves” .

Join us – we are all making new friends, and many are finding new love! Next drinks evening is very soon! Sign up by email now to get details and be on the guest list.

In a world where so many people are searching – there is now a whole new way of social networking – no games, no gimmicks, no cringe; no awful matchmaking or speed 7 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

A NEW ERA IN FACIAL REJUVENATION Providing an effective and non-surgical way to reduce wrinkles and tighten facial skin is one of the greatest challenges in cosmetic medicine

t before treatmen

How it worked for me! Julie Allen tries INTRAcel

F

irst came the facelift then came INTRAcel - a rejuvenating system that tightens the skin, it’s non-invasive and has unparalleled results. So after a consultation with Dr Peter Forrester of the Cosmetic Doctors Company I was very willing to go for it! As I approach mid-life I must admit I haven’t looked after my skin as well as I could have. I have always been a bit of a sun worshipper and too often being the last one standing at parties or at least attempting to stand! Although having been blessed with a good bone structure, my skin has started to look tired and dull. I really want to look fresher, reduce some fine lines and the saginess in the jowl area – I just want to look as good as the environment and the progression of years will allow! I was understandably nervous and filled with trepidation on the morning of my treatment, but was greeted with the usual positivity and enthusiasm at The Cosmetic Doctor’s Company. After an hour, an anaesthetic cream had numbed my face- then the treatment started. As the button of the INTRAcel machine was pressed – dozens of needles shot out over my forehead – being a bony area this caused some discomfort, but not pain! The treatment then switched to my eyes, as the needles covered the cheeks, nose and neck there was a feeling of warmth and it felt more like a very heavy facial. During the treatment my face was treated and

soothed with ice, gauze and a cooling fan. The treatment lasted around 45 minutes – which seemed more like 5. I felt slightly light headed which I was told was normal and after a 10 minute relaxation period the session was completed. My face was bright red and my eyes swollen. The next day I was still very red with grid marks across my face – my tender eyes were bruised and swollen. The redness had faded by day 3 although I was still slightly puffy, by then this was the only indication of treatment. Seven days after the treatment and I felt amazing. Although the little pockets of skin under my eyes were still visible, my face felt fresher. I’m told big differences don’t really show until 2 weeks after the second treatment! So I am really looking forward to the next one now, and knowing exactly what to expect makes it so much easier. My skin consultation 2 1/2 weeks after my treatment was very detailed and tailor made to my skin type and lifestyle. For day time the newly formalised CE- Thione mixed with Zo Skin Health - Daily Power Defence for anti-ageing was prescribed. For night time ZO Skin Health - Over Night Recovery Creme, Both from Zein Obagi. These professional products, I was told, support the INTRAcel treatment which stimulates collagen production I have had the odd stare that has been followed up with a compliment so already looking and definitely feeling the benefits! If you want to ask anything about my experience – email: julie@joolspr.com or tweet: @joolsmca

INTRAcel can: Improve the tone and texture of skin, producing a smoother and younger appearance. Tighten the skin to reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines Improve stretch marks and scarring Improve acne scarring

Skin Products Dr Forrester recommended

CE - Thione Rechargeable Vitamin C Antioxidant Formula Vitamin C is clinically proven to have anti- ageing benefits . CE-Thione helps protect the skin against free radicals which are the main cause of photo-ageing. CE- Thione also minimises the formulation of dark spots for a visibly brighter skin tone and improved texture and firmness. Ossential Daily Power Defense – Restores functionality, skin elasticity and improves uneven pigmentation. Ossential Daily Power Defense uses DNA repair enzymes to enhance your skin’s recovery capabilities. These special enzymes attach directly to your own DNA molecules and repair oxidative damage caused by UV exposure. It works all day with timerelease retinol, enzymes and anti-oxidants to repair damaged cells and protect against future damage. Ommerse Overnight Recovery Crème – Deeply soothes, calms and nourishes skin. While you sleep, your skin becomes more active, repairing and regenerating skin cells. This is the most important time to strengthen and nourish your skin. Ommerse Overnight Recovery Crème is the natural counterpoint to an active day – a little bit of R and R to calm and nourish the skin. It’s not sheer indulgence though. While you sleep, retinol works to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, ceramides nourish and calming agents protect against inflammation.

Who wants a hottie tummy? Do you have stubborn pockets of fat that just won’t disappear no matter how hard you exercise or diet? If so, the VASER Lipo may well be for you.

W

ith the likes of TOWIE’s Maria Fowler, and several other celebrities all benefiting from the amazing results of VASER Lipo, Dr Jain’s high definition body contouring practice is growing from strength to strength! VASER Lipo uses revolutionary new ultrasound technology which removes stubborn pockets of fat resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure has been hailed as ‘six pack surgery’ as it is even possible to reveal your hidden six pack with this revolutionary form of liposuction. Dr Jain will not only get you looking fit, you’ll look younger, more energetic and in one word, fantastic. You’ll want to use that new body of yours. With no hospital stay, little bruising and minimal incisions VASER Lipo is the answer. Reshape your body and invigorate your life Traditional liposuction is like sculpting with a shop vac. Everything gets sucked and chipped away without any detail. VASER 4D liposculpture is like taking a fine chisel and tapering each and every curve; every angle is perfect and muscular. Its not just liposuction. Its VASER 4D Sculpt. VASER 4D Liposculpture is a revolution to the cosmetic surgery industry. At its inception, liposuction was designed just to remove fat. Liposculpture is a whole new way of looking and designing the anatomy so that it fits you and your lifestyle like your body should. With the VASER technology, Dr Ravi Jain removes extra fat and tightens your skin around the new curves and muscles. He leaves certain deposits of fat to accentuate your muscles while removing others to create dips and valleys around them. He sculpts your body into the ultimate harmony of art and science, talent and medicine Who can have VASER 4D? The VASER 4D procedure is meant for people who are already in good

7 6 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

physical shape but have trouble achieving a defined ,athletic physique. Both men & women can be treated. VASER 4D is not mean for people who are very overweight or obese. The procedure depends heavily on skin retraction to help define the anatomical results. For people who are overly heavy, the skin has stretch beyond where VASER could help it retract. Please ask Dr Ravi Jain what other cosmetic options you may have if this describes you. How does VASER work? VASER is an advanced medical ultrasound technology (VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance). During surgery, the VASER probe emits sound energy that literally liquefies fat tissue before it is gently suctioned away. In traditional liposuction, the fat is just sucked away taking blood vessels, nerves and important connective tissue with it - resulting in severe pain, a longer recovery and mediocre results. With VASER, the liquid fat is easier to suction away, far gentler on the body and can be sculpted to enhance muscle appearance. Can you say “Confidence boost” ? Just imagine how you would feel without any extra fat, keeping you from your own carefree lifestyle. No more worrying about how that bikini will fit, or swimming with a T-shirt on. No more crash diets/ No more staring in the mirror, wishing you were slimmer. Areas commonly treated: Double Chin & Jowls Bingo Wings (Upper arms) Saddle Bags / Love handles Upper / lower abdomen Inner / outer thighs Dr Ravi Jain is one of a few experts in VASER high definition liposculpture in the world. The Dream Detox

January resolutions may be in full swing but who says you have to be cruel to be kind? The dreaded detox doesn’t have to be a chore. When it comes to January revitalisation, undoing the festive season damage can actually be quite pleasurable. BY LISA HAYNES A little extra sleep and a whole lot of pampering can do wonders for December-induced dull skin. Not sure where to start? Comfort Zone’s 2013 UK Spa Trend Report reveals the areas to focus on to make yourself feel human again - no fasting, juicing or gym inductions required. This is one detox you won’t want to confine to January. Heavenly hydration UK spa therapists named dehydration as the biggest skincare problem they see. Factor in a very ‘spirited’ festive season of excess alcohol and your skin is most likely screaming out for a detoxifying drink. Water makes up about two-thirds of the weight of a healthy body and the slightest imbalance can lead to lethargy, mood swings and a lack of elasticity in the skin. Emma Dunne, manager at The Ritz Salon, London, says: “Many clients come to the spa looking for a cure for dull and tired skin, assuming the ageing process is to blame. “Usually the answer to their lacklustre complexion is in fact dehydration.” Increase your water intake to a minimum of two litres a day and look for products that deliver maximum hydration and moisture to quench thirsty skin. 8 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

Rest and relaxation Yes, you heard it right. Pounding the treadmill at the gym shouldn’t be your only January prescription. Add sleep, according to Comfort Zone’s spa gurus. “Women spa visitors are showing more signs of stress and sleep deprivation than men with the majority of them falling asleep during a treatment,” says Catherine de Villiers, spa manager at The Spa in Dolphin Square. Counteract all those late December nights by snatching some extra shut-eye. Scientists from the University of Washington revealed sleeping for fewer than seven hours a night ‘encourages’ the genes that cause weight gain. Turn your bathroom into a sanctum for rest, warmth and privacy before bedtime. Light calming candles and create a dreamy relaxing bath using sleep-enhancing essential oils like lavender, jasmine or sandalwood. DIY spa Booking a visit to your favourite spa may be more of an occasional treat than a regularity, especially in budgetconscious January. Recreate the spa atmosphere at home and you can reap the rejuvenation benefits. The steam room is the easiest to replicate on a smaller scale with a facial steam for a deep cleanse. Simply fill a bowl with hot water and add a product like Dr Hauschka’s Facial Steam Bath (£26.45 from www.drhauschka.co.uk). Lean over

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

the bowl covering your head with a towel and breathe deeply for up to 10 minutes (three if you have sensitive skin). A good spa therapist is never far away from a body brush so invest for noticeably smoother, softer skin. Kelly Morrell, manager at Elemis day-spa, says: “A brush a day keeps dry skin away. Try dry body brushing before showering in an upward and outward motion.” Go organic No need to clear out your fridge and cupboards and replace with organic-only ingredients. If you’re aiming for the body beautiful, however, it’s worth reassessing your beauty routine and seeking out products that are pure, natural and free of added nasties. “Organic skincare has really come of age and the results we are seeing can at last compete with the more classic skincare lines,” explains Liz Holmes, spa director at Rockliffe Hall, Darlington. You don’t need to go back to basics either. Brands like Organic Surge, whose skincare products hold the EcoCert certification, are launching indulgent ranges like their new ‘Luxury Collection’ alongside everyday products. Vitamin shot Flagging on your five-a-day quota already? Vitamins have come a long way from chewable vitamin C tablets, focusing on our skin needs too. “Today, it is very clear that correct nutrition, physical activity, the help of dietary supplements to improve organ function, along with a topical application of the latest skincare breakthroughs, are equally vital components needed for optimal health of our skin,” suggests Davide Bollati, Comfort Zone founder. It’s an inside-out approach to beauty that’s becoming big business with a plethora of new supplement brands on the market. If you feel your skin, hair or nails are lacking in vitality, there’s a targeted daily pill you can pop. Visit

FeelUnique.com for a vast selection of supplements. Tried & tested Make orange peel skin a thing of the past. Our testers trial three cellulite potions: Dr Organic Royal Jelly Cellulite Cream, £9.29 (Holland & Barrett) This cellulite cream behaves more like a quality organic body lotion as it lacks toning and smoothing powers. Reassuringly, it’s a natural product but the thick consistency is hard to work into the skin. Avon Solution Cellu-Defy Intensive Anti-Cellulite Lotion, £10 (www.avonshop.co.uk/shop) Soft to the touch and doesn’t leave a sticky sensation on the skin afterwards. After a few weeks of use, I notice the orange peel effect has lessened slightly so I’ll be persisting for a smoother bottom and thighs. Nivea Q10 Plus Firming Goodbye Cellulite GelCream, £10.89 (Boots) This miracle cream delivers smooth skin results in days, not weeks. The gel-like formula absorbed instantly making dressing after application a doddle. Buy it now Forget the heels, Jimmy Choo has launched its second fragrance, Flash. The bling crystal faceted bottle is reminiscent of a paparazzi flash bulb. Flash is available exclusively at Debenhams from January 14 and nationwide from January 28, priced from £36 for 40ml EDP.

EAT YOURSELF BEAUTIFUL YOUR HAIR AND SKINCARE REGIME DOESN'T START AND FINISH WITH COSMETICS - RAID THE SUPERMARKET AISLES FOR FOODS TO PRETTIFY. LISA HAYNES SHARES HER BEAUTY DIET PLAN. BY LISA HAYNES

J

anuary begins with such good intentions. But even if your detox plans went downhill after week one, glossy hair, glowing skin and healthy nails are all still within your reach - at any time of year. As the old adage goes, true beauty comes from within - and a good place to start is with the contents of your fridge. Glossy hair, glowing skin and healthy

nails are all things you can glean from cuisine. Humble watercress recently rivalled expensive potions when, after just four weeks of adding a bag a day to their diet, 10 out of 11 females experienced visible improvements to their skin, according to a Watercress Alliance study. It's not rocket science. Pack your diet with vitamin and mineral-rich goodness

and you'll reap the beauty benefits. Over one third (70%) of Brits opt for a natural approach to their daily beauty routine, a survey commissioned by Tropicana revealed. "ere's a growing body of evidence that shows the look and feel of our skin may be influenced by what we eat," says Amanda Ursell, Tropicana nutritionist. "Specific nutrients found in your diet

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y have a major part to play in ensuring clear skin, bright eyes and glossy hair." Sadly, there's no quick-fix approach. One sup of a super-green smoothie won't immediately transform you into a supermodel - it can take at least three weeks of steady healthy eating before you notice any subtle improvements in the mirror. So stock up on these beautifying delicacies for gorge-eous results. BREAKFAST Kick start your day with a cup of green tea to rev up your metabolism and get your skin glowing. "Drinking green tea has many beauty benefits," says Simple nutritionist, Fiona Hunter. "A natural antioxidant, green tea comes from the same plant as other teas but it is not fermented, so retains more nutrients and has been shown to have twice as much antioxidant power as vitamin E. "Green tea can help when it comes to skincare, protecting it from external environmental influences and therefore helping fight signs of premature ageing." Eggs are the breakfast food to indulge in for gorgeous, glossy locks. ey work wonders for hair inside and out; rich in biotin, which is essential for cell growth, and vitamin B-12 for strengthening locks and maintaining a healthy scalp. Finish with a glass of fresh orange juice. It's packed with vitamin C which is crucial for producing collagen - the protein that helps keep skin looking fresh and youthful. LUNCH Whip up a skin-friendly super-salad for your afternoon meal. Ingredients rich in lutein can work especially well if you're a sun-seeker. Ursell explains: "Lutein belongs to the carotenoid family of antioxidants and has been linked to reducing sun-induced skin damage and improving the elasticity of the skin."

Spinach (12mg in 100g) and red peppers (7mg in 100g) are both good sources. Add some hearty chunks of sweet potato for an extra fix of Vitamin E. Forget ice cream and try a small scoop of coconut oil for afters. Jennifer Aniston was spotted toting the ingredient in her shopping basket. e plant oil promotes supple, deeply hydrated skin and it's versatile too... "We get a lot of enquiries about whether our Virgin Organic Coconut Oil is for eating or for beauty - and the answer is both," says Dr Organic spokesperson Michael Lightowlers.

SNACKS Nibbling on nuts will help conquer hunger pangs between meals - and top-up your beauty regime too. Almonds are rich in Vitamin E and chewing a few a day can help improve skin texture and lessen after-meal surges in blood sugar levels. Hazelnuts are another good source. Fruit also makes great beautifying snacks. Tangerines are a good source of lutein, while blueberries, strawberries and kiwis are packed with vitamin C to aid collagen production and keep capillaries healthy. And munching a few dried apricots, high in iron, will help improve skin tone.

DINNER You can't beat oily fish for enviable skin and hair. e fatty acids found in salmon, mackerel and sardines can help give you a post-facial-like glow, keeping your skin plump and moisturised. If Christmas leftovers and curries haven't put you off, turkey is also a healthy dinner alternative. Hunter says: "A 100g serving contains nearly 75% of an adult's Recommend Daily Allowance (RDA) of protein. It's also low in fat and rich in zinc and selenium - an antioxidant that benefits the skin and immune system." For sides, try carrots: "Rich in alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, which convert to vitamin A, this is essential for the manufacture of new skin cells," Hunter advises. Chocoholics don't have to deny themselves completely for dessert. Just stick to the dark stuff, rather than white or milk choc. Good quality dark chocolate, with high cocoa contents, contains a group of phytochemicals called flavonols that can help protect the skin against free radical damage, known to cause wrinkles and anti-ageing.

THE ASTOR

The transformation of a Grade 2 octagonal barn Once part of Lord Astor’s estate, The Astor, in Cookham, was originally part of a farm, providing for its neighbour across the river, Cliveden House.

W

hen Robert Cantle first saw it, the buildings were in various stages of dilapidation. It was the central building, a rare, Grade 2 listed octagonal barn, which attracted his attention. For thirty years, Robert’s company Trenac Estates had been creating beautiful mansion houses in and around the Home Counties. He recognised that The Astor was something rather special and was determined to rescue it, by retaining and restoring the period features, whilst incorporating the very best of modern technology. “I needed to achieve a blend of the old and the new,” he said. “Tastes have changed - and however much people love traditional buildings, they expect the interior to be luxurious and contemporary.” Robert didn’t have far to look for an interior designer who could match his vision. Alexander James Interiors had a track record of award-winning design for some of the most prestigious show houses and private homes in London and the Home Counties. They had the credentials and flair to help Robert achieve his ambition to create one of the most outstanding houses in the Thames Valley. Their designer for The Astor was Caroline Rogers. “When I first saw the house,” she said, “I could clearly see the potential. It’s an extraordinary property, with huge open areas, supported by gigantic beams. The whole feeling is one of space and air. Our task was to harness this extraordinary space, turning each area into a distinct and recognisable ‘room without walls’.

to define the ‘rooms’ around the central atrium. The starting point was the kitchen area. Once this was defined it became clear which areas should be the dining room and living room, and so on. “The living room was the largest space in the house, so it was a challenge. I used white sofas, sharpened with splashes of purple and lime in the cushions - and added drama with a zebra rug. “The six bedroom suites fitted naturally into the corners of the octagon and are the only enclosed spaces. Here we used papers for the wall coverings, with neutral colours for the carpets and furnishings. “The master bedroom suite is the most dramatic,” she said. “The first thing you see, through the surrounding windows, is an area of outstanding natural beauty, complete with horses grazing in the meadows. It couldn’t be more perfect! I chose simple, key pieces in here, to avoid detracting from the view!” We asked Robert Cantle whether he was pleased with the results. “Fantastic!” he said. “The whole service has been superb. Right from the start, their approach was very professional.” Alexander James Interiors 0118 932 0828 www.aji.co.uk

“The result needed to be ultra-contemporary, Robert used pale ceramic tiles across the entire ground floor living area. We then used colour 8 4 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

Supporting Nature

Christmas is now well behind us, along with the pampering it brings. Since then all of us, who have not been lucky to escape broad to sunnier climes, have had to put up with freezing temperatures, snow and rain. Although all of this has been uncomfortable and a real to us, think what it must have been like for wild animals. These creatures had no choice but to try and survive these conditions with minimal protection, unlike us.

W

e are regularly told by the media that we need to look after our environment better, use less energy, and basically be greener. Often this is incompatible with our modern lifestyles; however all of us has the ability to make a small difference, whether it is by leaving a small area of the garden for nature or by planting wildlife friendly flowers and shrubs. When choosing plants for the garden, remember to select some that are insect friendly, simple flowers rather than large double ones are usually better for insects as often in double flowers the nectar and pollen production has been forfeited in the breeding process.

8 6 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

Recently I was introduced to a relatively young company Wildlife World, who specialise in products which help support nature. Where space is at a premium outside, it is still possible to create habitats that encourage wildlife. Not all of us have the space to have large compost heaps, nor do we all want to leave lots of leaves around in the autumn, or leave logs and branches to provide natural habitats for wildlife. Their products help bridge the gap between a pristine inert garden and a garden turned over to nature, thus providing a more orderly garden, where you still retain some control whilst supporting nature, an old fashioned compromise!

H OUS E & GA R D E N

Most of us understand the importance of putting water and food out for wild birds, some even put out nest boxes to encourage roosting, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Any of you with a hedge could easily go a step further by helping the hedgehog population, by putting a hedgehog house underneath it. Done at this time of the year it allows it to weather and encourages nesting in the spring. In return you will benefit from their voracious appetites for slugs. Those of you lucky to have a pond, or damp area within the garden could help the frog population by putting a frog house nearby to help our amphibian friends. Any garden can be a home for a pollinating bee log, butterfly lodge, ladybird tower or lacewing hide. Most of us go about our lives with barely a glance at these insects going about their work, it might surprise you to learn that there are over 250 species of bee in the UK, without insects we would all be the poorer. Our gardens would suffer more pests, our trees and shrubs less fruit and berries,

as their flowers lack their pollinators. Many of these creatures are misunderstood and are threatened as a result of the way our environment, large and small, is managed. Currently there are real fears that our bee and butterfly populations are being severely affected by man’s activities, your actions on their own will not cause animals to become extinct or save them, but like everything in life, the activities of a number of people do have that ability. Forgive me if you think I am preaching to you, as I do not intend to. However encouraging wildlife will add an extra dimension to your garden and help bring it to life, not just for you but for future generations.

There is an immense amount of ornate plasterwork in Great Britain in many different styles. Over the years much has become damaged or destroyed. The means of restoring and conserving ornate plasterwork has changed over the centuries. While it is important to maintain as much as possible of the original plasterwork it may be necessary to restore or replace missing or damaged sections. To carry out this work requires considerable experience. Their modeller is able to take mouldings from existing designs, if symmetrical or modelling can be executed from a photograph or drawing. Plasterwork can be cleaned or left, a model laid down and a mould made in varying types of compounds, from this mould a section of plasterwork can be reproduced and installed. A cast is then produced which can then be installed to match the original. Their work is not limited to interior cornices, decorative ceilings, arches and columns. They also manufacture and install exterior mouldings, both ornate and plain. These can be produced in sand and cement, fibreglass or Jesmonite, a resin bonded cement. he National Health Service pays for care where health care needs are paramount but social care (help with washing and dressing for example) is paid for by the Local Authority through the means testing process.

TO CAP OR NOT TO CAP?

The “baby boom” generation approaching old age has twin expectations of a “cradle to grave” welfare state and of an inheritance to pass on to their children. How to pay for it all is a problem facing all Governments.

Some Local Authorities are hesitant about operating the current deferred payment scheme due to lack of funds. The private sector has also provided a solution with long-term care annuities but not many insurance companies are now in the market.

All assets over £23,250 are taken into account, including the house. The house is disregarded in limited circumstances but generally will need to be sold to pay for care. Governments want to encourage saving and home ownership but cannot afford to pay for everyone. A ‘cap’ or limit on the amount to pay for care was recommended by the Dilnot Report in 2011. Those paying for care would only have to spend their savings and house sale proceeds up to a set amount. But what amount? £35,000? £100,000? Over how long? Lifetime? Over 65? For what level of care? Health? Social? Board and lodging?

The Government have also proposed the “Universal Deferred Payments Scheme”. Local Authorities offer this already, without a cap, in certain cases by paying the fees during a person’s lifetime, secured by a ‘charge’ on the house which is repaid once the house is sold after death.

The problem can only grow, for the baby-boom generation and the next. Taking timely legal advice on your individual circumstances can help you and your family plan for the future and protect your assets.
