Anyone for Pimm’s?
The Pimm’s tradition is almost as entrenched in British culture as the cup of tea. All it takes is a prolonged period of good weather, and nothing beats a glass of Pimms on a summer’s day. Pimm’s is most popular in Britain, particularly. It is one of the two staple drinks at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta, and the Glyndebourne opera festival. A Pimm’s is also the standard cocktail at British polo matches.
Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is based on gin and can be served both on ice or in cocktails. It has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit. It is often taken with “English-style” lemonade, as well as various chopped fresh ingredients, particularly apples, cucumber, oranges, lemons, strawberry, and borage, though nowadays most substitute mint. Pimm’s can also be mixed with champagne (or a sparkling white wine), called a “Pimm’s Royal Cup”.
HISTORY OF PIMMS Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent, invented the thirstquencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cup moniker was born.
Pimm’s began large-scale production in 1851 to keep up with sales to other bars. The distillery began selling it commercially in 1859 using hawkers on bicycles. In 1865 Pimm sold the business and the right to use his name to Frederick Sawyer. In 1880 the business was acquired by future Lord Mayor of London, Horatio Davies, and a

MAXIMUM VOLTAGE PIMMS NO.6
Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice, 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka and 25ml of Cointreau. Shake well and strain into a highball full of ice. Fill with soda water and garnish with mint. If mixing your own Pimms sounds too much like hard work, head to one of the many pubs and bars in London which serve up Pimms with a healthy dose of fruit, ice and garnished with a sprig of mint. 1 6 J U LY 2 0 1 2
chain of Pimm’s Oyster Houses was franchised in 1887. After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups. Pimm’s No. 2 Cup was based on Scotch whisky. Pimm’s No. 3 Cup is based on brandy. Phased out, but a version infused with spices and orange peel marketed as Pimm’s Winter Cup is now seasonally available. Pimm’s No. 4 Cup was based on rum, currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 5 Cup was based on rye whisky, also currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 6 Cup is based on vodka. It is still produced, but in small quantities. THE ORIGINAL NO. 1 CUP STILL REIGNS SUPREME IN POPULARITY.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE WINE IN THE WORLD AT FIRST GLANCE IT MAY NOT SEEM LIKE A WINE BOTTLE BUT THIS GLASS AND METAL CONE CONTAINS THE MOST EXPENSIVE WINE. The world’s most expensive bottle of wine has gone on sale for a staggering £109,000 - making the cost of just one small 150ml glass of this rare tipple a bank-breaking £21,000, enough for 5,250 glasses of wine in a pub. Australian winery Penfolds has released 12 special bottles of the 2004 Block 42’ Cabernet Sauvignon - a rare single-vineyard wine which is only released in stellar vintages. The red wine, comes in an Ampoule which is hand-blown by Nick Mount, a famous glass artist from Adelaide. The ampoule has no cork or screw cap, and can only be opened by a trained wine expert. The ampoule is designed to provide the ideal environment for the wine - and even the most cavalier of millionaires cannot just whip the top off the bottle and quaff the contents. The Block 42 vines were 1 8 J U LY 2 0 1 2
transported from France to Australia in the 1830s and are now located in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, northeast of Adelaide. Penfolds said the vines are thought to be the oldest continuously producing Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world. Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said: ‘There is something really magical about the 2004 Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet. ‘It has an ethereal dimension and a saturated blackness on the palate, it’s extraordinarily perfumed with layer upon layer of flavour.’ Penfolds’ chief winemaker Peter Gago said that if any buyer wished to drink the exclusive wine, a Penfolds winemaker would travel to wherever the buyer was in the world and open and decant the ampoule using bespoke equipment in a special ceremony. He said: ‘The Ampoule Project is typical of the pioneering philosophy behind Penfolds’ winemaking evolution. ‘The collaboration with South Australia’s finest artists has been a fitting tribute for one of South Australia’s finest wines.’

celebration – stunning exhibits from the 1950s and the fantastic new SLS. Expected to steal the limelight at this year’s event is the very special ROFGO Gulf Collection. Salon Privé is delighted to be able to unearth this rare collection of Gulf cars from Adrian Hamilton’s country house in Hampshire, and bring them to Syon Park on full public view together for the very first time. These cars, instantly recognisable from their iconic sky blue and orange livery, stretch right back from 1967 (the 1967 Mirage was the first Gulf-liveried

In a year when Her Majesty The Queen celebrates the 60-year Diamond Jubilee, the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing is also celebrating its own 60th anniversary in the public eye, and will be on display in all its glory at Syon Park this September. Named because of its unusual “Gullwing” upwards lifting doors, the car was initially conceived as a purpose-built racing sports car and went on to achieve immediate iconic status – as evidenced by 2011’s equally striking tribute SLS, also exhibited at Salon Privé in 2012. There will also be a special exhibit dedicated to memorable cars from the movies, including some rare

BATTERSEA POWER STATION
SOLD for £400m to Malaysian bidder
B
attersea Power Station, the four-tower listed London landmark, has been sold to a consortium led by Malaysia’s SP Setia for £400m, beating bids from about 15 others from as far afield as Brazil, China, South Africa and Kazakhstan. Joint sale advisers Ernst & Young and Knight Frank exchanged contracts earlier this month on the sale of the 39-acre site on the south bank of the River Thames, the last prime piece of central London real estate available for redevelopment. “The Brits were noticeable by their absence from the bidding process,” said Knight Frank’s Stephan Miles-Brown, adding London real estate had become the target for overseas cash amid the financial turmoil of recent years. “In the 1980s, the Chelsea Harbour scheme was developed not far from Battersea Power Station,” he said. “Bovis Homes (BVS.L) and P&O were behind that. Times have changed.” The consortium of SP Setia, Malaysia’s leading property developer, plans to redevelop the crumbling but protected site into homes, offices and retail. They also plan to build a tube station on the premises that will connect to the Northern Line. Current planning consent is for 3,500 homes and 1.7m sq ft of office space. The Malaysian team plans to keep the chimneys despite suggestions the protected site would be more financially viable for a developer if it was demolished, a move that would have provoked a strong backlash among the British public and politicians
2 6 J U LY 2 0 1 2
due to the affection many hold for it. Other consortium members include Sime Darby and the Employees’ Pension Fund of Malaysia. SP Setia was named preferred bidder in June, since when the consortium has been carrying out due diligence on the four-chimney brick power station built in two stages in the 1930s and 1950s. Malaysian buyers have bought a string of large office blocks in London’s main financial district in recent years and the Shard skyscraper, the newest addition to the city’s skyline was funded by the state of Qatar. Overseas buyers have invested 15.8 billion pounds in London offices since 2010, 64% of the total, CBRE (CBG.N) said, and foreign ownership of the City financial district stands at 52%, according to Development Securities (DSC.L). The decaying edifice on the south bank of the River Thames, which is Europe’s largest brick structure with white art-deco chimneys, has been a recognisable silhouette on the London skyline for 80 years. Rival bidders included Chelsea Football Club, which looked at the site as a possible replacement for Stamford Bridge. Its architect was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed London’s famous red telephone boxes. It also featured in the Beatles’ film Help!, Pink Floyd’s Animals album and more recently in the Batman film The Dark Knight.

THE NATIONAL TRUST CELEBRATES
THE WORLD SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL Clandon Park and Hatchlands Park to host Shakespeare’s greatest plays this August
T
his August, to coincide with the World Shakespeare Festival, Clandon Park and Hatchlands Park, are presenting a series of performances and workshops of some of Shakespeare’s greatest plays: A Midsummer Night’s dream, Macbeth, The Tempest and Much Ado about Nothing. The stunning National Trust venues, based near Guildford, will provide great entertainment for all the family, and audiences will have the opportunity to view the famous Shakespeare portrait at Hatchlands Park. The famous Cobbe Portrait of Shakespeare, painted in c1610 by an unknown artist has recently returned to Hatchlands Park in Guildford, after being the centrepiece of an exhibition in New York’s Morgan Library and Museum. Now hanging in pride of place in the library, this painting caused
an international sensation when it was unveiled in March 2009 at the exhibition “Shakespeare Found: A Life Portrait at Last ,” at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon. The exhibition revealed that the painting was repeatedly copied and that the majority of the 17th century copies possessed long traditions as representations of Shakespeare. The portrait’s status as the original of these copies has only recently been established by x-ray, infrared examination and tree-ring dating. Perhaps most excitingly, this portrait appears to have been taken from life.
Manager, said: “We are delighted to host these talented theatre companies and celebrate the World Shakespeare Festival, described as an unprecedented collaboration with leading UK and international arts organisations and the biggest celebration of Shakespeare ever staged.” The festival kicks off at Hatchlands Park with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, when Guildford Shakespeare Company will take you on 4 magical trips into Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece on August 1, 2 and 3rd.

SHOOTING AT EXCELLENCE
THIS MONTH, WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE INVITED TO THE PRESTIGIOUS SHOOTING GROUNDS OF HOLLAND AND HOLLAND. SITUATED IN NORTHWOOD, MIDDLESEX THE GROUNDS PROVIDE A SCENIC AND SPACIOUS SHOOTING ENVIRONMENT WITHIN A SHORT COMMUTE OF LONDON. Founded by Harris Holland in 1835, Holland & Holland have arguably become the most prestigious and well renowned manufacturer of guns across the globe and a signature name in the sport of shooting. Being one of, if not the leader in its field, the brand have expanded to not only provide tailor made rifles and guns but also luxury goods, shooting equipment, accessories, clothing and of course now, the official Holland & Holland shooting grounds. The grounds provide the perfect environment for any first-time or seasoned shooter. Open six days a week, the grounds have four permanent instructors, who boast 100 years of shooting experience between them. As well as accommodating for private bookings, a number of easily accessible and exciting events are run, to engage the varied customer base to which the sport attracts. From full and half day shoots to corporate entertainment, Ladies ‘Green Feathers’ courses and ‘Young Shoot days’ Holland & Holland make the art of shooting accessible for all. All equipment is provided on 3 4 J U LY 2 0 1 2
arrival, including gun hire, hearing protection cartridges and clays. The shooting grounds at Holland & Holland operate with an unrivalled and immaculate attention to safety and customer satisfaction. Upon arrival, familiar and seasoned shooters are able to draw on the experience and expertise of the friendly and knowledgeable staff. New comers are welcomed in to a hospitable environment, with personal attention that ensures they are not only comfortable, in control of their gun and the days activities, but most importantly safe and looked after. An expert instructor will make sure that new comers know how to correctly stand, carry, line-up shoot reload and dock their weapon, to not only improve the individual but also to create a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone involved. The staff has an extraordinary knowledge of shooting, from the guns and the bullets themselves to aiming points, technique and the history of the sport. Acting much as a personal ‘caddy’ would, they are on hand as you navigate through your day.
FEATURE
The grounds themselves are incredibly well maintained and provide a beautiful backdrop to the days entertainment. With a wide array of shooting points and individually laid out sections, each area of the grounds are utilised to their full potential. Being just a short drive from London, It is easy to get ‘lost’ in the countryside providing a perfect sanctuary for those keen to avoid the daily bustle of the City. For newcomers, on hand training is given on how to reload, aim and fire your weapon, once you reach the first point on the shooting range. A number of shooting drills are rehearsed so that one can get a realistic gauge of how the bullets are shot and dispersed at a measurable target. This is an indispensable learning tool for beginners. Once he or she is ready, it is on to the courses. The sheer amount of variation and options available makes for a marksman’s dream. For the game shooter, specially built towers will throw you your shot to replicate the movements of pheasant, partridge or fowl. This can be triggered automatically or manually, enabling the shooter to either be fed shots, or break his or her style down at their convenience, to remedy a fault or improve in a specific type of shot. The Grouse shooter can make use of Holland & Holland’s new ‘multi-tap Butt’ to show individual birds, or a realistic sequence of 25 birds. Clay shooters are exposed to an almost endless array of exciting and challenging shots, which can either be done selectively or by shooting the pre-set 50 or 100 bird-sporting courses. The clay pigeon shooting forms are simplistic enough to cater for the novice, with an unlimited and varied selection of targets to test the even the most experienced of shooters. The accompanying instructors are available at all times, to not only provide expert advice on shots, but to make sure your experience can be tailored to coax the very best out of the day and the group.
This setup creates a unique alternative option for corporate and client entertainment. Similar to that of a round of golf, the structure of a corporate day make for exciting moments of sporting action, interspersed with a social backdrop. Holland & Holland’s ‘Northwood Day’ for example begins at 9:30am with a safety briefing, and a light breakfast, Bacon sandwiches tea and Coffee. Three shooting slots are lined up with the first commencing at 10:00 am, divided nicely by short breaks in the comfortable surrounding hospitality areas. The third and final session begins at 1:00pm and lasts for 2 hours. It is in this session that the appropriately named ‘fun shooting competitions’ are ran, which will be sure to expel any remaining energy and make for tremendous entertainment. The day is finished with a three-course late lunch including wine, before guests are free to depart at 4:30. In addition to the standard ‘Northwood’ shooting day, Holland & Holland have created a number of unusual and exciting alternatives to a full days shooting which can incorporate 100 year old ‘black powder’ shotguns, ‘Big game’ rifles, archery, crossbow shooting, even (believe it or not) Quad biking, off road and mini-hovercraft driving activities. Holland & Holland have created a shooting ground that manages to cater for all, and put them in the very best of hands. It is no surprise the finest gun-maker in the world, have created a shooting environment, which matches up to its name. The brands pedigree and heritage station only the best instructors, happy to help and passionate about the sport. The grounds were built with unrivalled knowledge, using the best in technology and catering for all types of shooting. The proud company name continues to uphold unparalleled levels of safety, whilst keeping enjoyment of the sport at the forefront. For us, there really is no better place to shoot.

WIMBLEDON
2012 HIGHLIGHTS It’s been an emotional, record-breaking, historic Championships with the first ever Wimbledon final contested under the roof. Epic late-night finishes, major upsets, relentless rain and endless British expectation ... the 2012 tournament has witnessed it all. We take a look back at just some of the highlights over the two weeks.
defeating Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Romania’s Horia Tecau 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 after having pulled off the victory of a lifetime in the semi-finals over the famed American twins, Mike and Bob Bryan in four sets. Marray became the first Briton to win the Gentlemen’s Doubles title since Pat Hughes and Raymond Tuckey in 1936.
RULE BRITANNIA... At the start of The Championships few could have envisaged the success the British contingent would experience but in 2012, the year of the Queen’s Jubilee and the London Olympic Games, home-grown talent shone brightly. Heather Watson, the 20-year-old from Guernsey, became the first woman in a decade to reach the third round since Elena Baltacha, Andy Murray reached his first Wimbledon final and Jonathan Marry, alongside Danish partner Frederik Nielsen, lifted the Gentleman’s Doubles title.
NADAL OUSTED IN SECOND ROUND ... On Thursday 28th June, World No.2 Rafael Nadal suffered a shock second-round defeat at the hands of 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol, a player who has never appeared in a tournament final and who had lost in the first round of qualifying in his past five Wimbledon attempts. The Czech simply outclassed the Spaniard to secure a 6-7(9), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory in a duel which began in late afternoon sunshine and finished four hours later beneath the closed roof. “You play against an inspired opponent and I am out. That’s all. Is not a tragedy. Is only a tennis match,” Nadal said at the time. “At the end, that’s life. There [are] much more important things. Sure, I wanted to win, but I lost. That’s it.”
This was a golden moment for Britain when Sheffield’s Jonathan Marray teamed with Frederik Nielsen of Denmark as a wild card entry to capture the title by

THE RETURN OF BRIAN BAKER ... Everyone loves a comeback story, particularly when it involves a player who has been sidelined for almost six years due to injury. Brian Baker’s fairytale Wimbledon spell began on the Roehampton lawns where he declared after his first-round victory that he hoped to maybe qualify and “do some damage in the main draw”. The American, who endured five major operations during his time away from the sport and started the year with a ranking of No.458, not only won his subsequent two qualifying matches, but a further three in the main draw before Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber swept him aside in straight sets. Baker’s incredible run saw him break through the top 100 barrier and move up to around No.77 in the world. SERENA PUTS THE SW BACK INTO SW19 … Against the odds Serena fought back from her illness last year, and was reunited with the Venus Rosewater dish for a fifth time when she defeated Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 on Centre Court, bringing her Grand Slam singles tally to 14. Venus, who too has endured her own health battles, joined her sister on the hallowed turf for the Ladies’ Doubles final where they secured a 7-5, 6-4 win over Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka to pocket a 13th Grand Slam ladies’ doubles title. AND SERVES UP HER TRUMP ACE CARD During the third set of her final against Radwanska, Serena delivered 17 aces – four of those served consecutively in one game. By the end of the tournament the American had set a new record of 102 for the Championships. ROGER FEDERER WINS BUT ANDY MURRAY TRIUMPHS Roger Federer joined the illustrious Pete Sampras/William Renshaw
4 0 J U LY 2 0 1 2
Club when he won the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles title for a record-equalling seventh time. In defeating Andy Murray 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 the Swiss also reclaimed his world No.1 ranking and at aged 30, became the second oldest man to do so behind Andre Agassi. It was a tense and emotional occasion in which the last two sets were played, for the first time at a Gentlemen’s Singles final. Murray was the first British man to play in the final for 74 years, since Bunny Austin lost to Don Budge in 1938, and was also hoping to overturn another long-standing mark, that of Fred Perry, the last British man to win the Wimbledon title in 1936, 76 years ago. Although Perry’s record will stand for at least another year, there were moments when Murray looked capable of eclipsing Perry’s achievement, before Federer settled to produce the sort of brilliant tennis which has made him the most successful male player of all time. Before he broke down at the prize-giving ceremony, Murray managed to say “I’m getting closer”, and he is. Perhaps next year, Andy, when all of Britain will again be willing him on in the marvellous fashion they did this time. What Murray achieved over the course of three hours and 24 minutes will have made everyone in the locker room take note. In his previous three finals, he was a shadow of the player who had fought through the draw to reach the last hurdle. In his first final [in 2008], he was just inexperienced; in his next two – both in Australia – he was overwhelmed [against Federer in 2010] and oddly unsure of what he was supposed to be doing [against Djokovic the following year]. In three attempts, he failed to win so much as a set. This time, he was focused, he was determined and, in the end, he was just outplayed by a supreme and sublime Swiss magician
FEATURE
who was fighting for his own place in history: his recordequalling seventh trophy in SW19 and a 286th week as the world No.1, a record to equal Pete Sampras’s reign at the top. After the tears have been wiped away and he has had a few days to think about what he has achieved, Murray ought to return to the All England Club grass for the Olympics with a greater, deeper belief that he is the man to beat the three greats who have dominated the grand slam circuit for so long. As for the US Open at the end of the summer, that is played on a hard court, the surface that suits his game more than any other. For all that Sunday’s loss hurt, what he accomplished at Wimbledon this summer can only make him stronger and more confident as he plans the rest of his year. LONGEST MATCH OF THE TOURNAMENT Marin Cilic and Sam Querrey recorded the second longest men’s singles match in the history of the Championships with their third-round 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-7(3), 17-15 contest, which lasted five hours and 31 minutes and saw Cilic prevail. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut set the record for the longest ever Championships match in 2010 with their 11-hour and five-minute epic encounter. LOST AND FOUND The lost-and-found emotional dynamic was set in motion by Rufus the Harris Hawk. Four days into his annual celeb-turn as the official pigeon-scarer with his fan club, security pass and twitter account, this high-flying raptor was stolen in the early hours from a car parked on a nearby street. Cue, mass distress… and then mass relief, when a few days later, Rufus was discovered on Wimbledon Common by a member of the public. Owner Imogen Davis, said: “We can’t believe it. We are so excited. Rufus says thank you so much.” The All England Club is now being transformed
from its traditional Wimbledon championships guise into a London 2012 Olympics venue. The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has taken control of the world’s most famous tennis courts, as players such as Wimbledon champions Roger Federer and Serena Williams and runner-up Murray begin battling for gold medals. The Olympic tennis event, which was held at the All England Club’s previous site in 1908, will begin on July 28 and last nine days. There will be medals in men’s and women’s singles and doubles and, for the first time since Paris 1924, mixed doubles. With 64-strong singles draws, 32 pairs in the men’s and women’s doubles and 16 mixed doubles pairs, it means a busy schedule on 12 playing courts, rather than the 19 used at the Wimbledon championships. Already, the dark green canvas backstops on the outside courts have been replaced with the purple brand of London 2012, complete with Olympic rings, while the club’s ground staff are busy restoring the lawns after their twoweek battering during the rain-hit championships. All the tickets for the tennis are sold, with capacity set at 30,000, lower than during the Wimbledon tournament. There will be none of the traditional Everybody inside will be a ticket holder. Wimbledon remains as unique and extraordinary as ever, the stars will return to fight it out for Olympic gold, when the All England Club’s lavish environs will help turn something of an oddity into a big occasion. But grand slam tennis at SW19 will forever remain the occasion when the sport really finds its magic.

Approached last year, The Sculpture Park put together a collection of inspiring and challenging works of art for display at the village, to enhance and complement the athlete’s rest and recreation areas. Drawn from the vast selection of sculpture available at the park, they include classically inspired pieces such as The Thinker by New York artist Wendy Fisher, and modern design works like John Clive’s Spectral Columns.
As evidenced by the pictures, sculpture can add style and atmosphere to any room or garden however large or small, whether it is a more traditional bronze or marble, or a modern abstract in stainless steel or glass. They are an excellent form of art to collect and a very rewarding hobby, but whether you are an experienced collector or just want a piece to lift an un-inspiring hallway, you need to know what is available, from garden ornamental to serious investment works. Here’s a quick guide on what to look for
when buying, so that you may avoid any pitfalls and be confident that you will end up with a beautiful piece of artwork to grace any home.
RESEARCH

Decide where you want to put the piece in your house or garden, and spend some time considering the budget you can allocate. For first time buyers, the key advice is to buy a piece because you like it, but buy the best that you can afford within your budget. With the range of styles and materials now available, large doesn’t have to be expensive, but conversely smaller pieces are not necessarily cheap either. It depends on the

25TH ANNIVERSARY
LONDON OLYMPICS 2012
The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are here! Starting 27th July, and running until 12th August 2012
T
he Olympic Games is the biggest sporting event on the planet. With 26 sports, 10,500 athletes and millions of spectators, it’s going to be a busy summer. Giant Olympic Rings have been unveiled at Heathrow, the Host Airport of the Games, to help provide a spectacular visual welcome to athletes and visitors during London 2012. Along with plenty of excitement and an incredible atmosphere, the Olympic Games will bring thousands of visitors to London and the UK. This means the transport system will be extremely busy – so if you’re going to a London 2012 sports event or ceremony, it’s important to plan and book your journey well in advance. There is no spectator parking at London 2012 venues, except for a limited number of Blue badge spaces that must be booked in advance – so we recommend you go by public transport, or in many cases, walking to a London 2012 venue is much quicker and easier than you may think. As well as being a healthy, sustainable way to travel, it gives you the chance to see many sights on the way and soak up the atmosphere of being in a Host City. J U LY 2 0 1 2 4 5

1948 OLYMPICS LONDON
The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in London, England. After a 12-year hiatus because of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics since the 1936 Games in Berlin. This was the second occasion that London had hosted the Olympic Games, having previously been the venue in 1908. Britain almost handed the 1948 games to the USA due to post-war financial and rationing problems, but King George

expensive; athletes were therefore housed in existing accommodation. Male competitors stayed at RAF camps in Uxbridge, West Drayton and Richmond; female competitors in London colleges.
At the time of the Games, food, petrol and building rationing was still in place in Britain; because of this, the 1948 Olympics came to be known as the “Austerity Games”. Athletes were given increased rations, the same as those received by dockers and miners, which meant 5,467 calories a day, instead of the normal 2,600. Building an Olympic Village was deemed too
The Games opened on 29th July 1948. Army bands began playing at 2pm for 85,000 spectators in Wembley Stadium. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, with Queen Mary and other members of the Royal Family arrived at 2.45pm. The competitors then entered the stadium in a procession that took 50 minutes. When the United Kingdom had passed
the saluting base, Lord Burghley began his welcome: Your Majesty: The hour has struck. A visionary dream has today become a glorious reality. At the end of the worldwide struggle in 1945, many institutions and associations were found to have withered and only the strongest had survived. How, many wondered, had the great Olympic Movement prospered? After welcoming the athletes to two weeks of “keen but friendly rivalry”, he said London represented a “warm flame of hope for a better understanding in the world which has burned so low.”
LONDON OLYMPICS 2012
At 4pm, the King declared the Games open, 2,500 pigeons were set free and the Olympic Flag raised. The Royal Horse Artillery sounded a 21-gun salute and the last runner in the Torch Relay ran a lap of the track and climbed the steps to the Olympic cauldron. After saluting the crowd, he turned and lit the flame. After more speeches, Donald Finlay of the British team took the Olympic Oath on behalf of all competitors. RETURN TO THE
BRONZE AGE The Olympic athletes may be gunning for gold or silver this summer, but bronze is the winning look to strive for in beauty.
Few of us are sporting natural tans thanks to the unseasonable weather. However, your make-up bag has the perfect antidote to sallow complexions. If the sun won’t play ball, bring out the bronzer. A believable sun-kissed glow can be yours with transforming bronzing and highlighter products. “The healthy bronzed goddess look has always been a summertime favourite,” says Liz Pugh, Avon professional make-up artist. A bronzed and beautiful summer? Oh, glow on then.
GLOW GETTER
Ditch the dark matte bronzers, this season is all about a healthy, natural complexion. “When applying your bronzer, be sure to sweep the brush over your forehead, chin and nose - all the areas the sun would naturally catch,” advises Pugh. “For summertime nights out also brush along your shoulders and collarbone, this will provide the ultimate sunkissed look.” The trick to a believable ‘tan’ is to find a bronzer with just the right mix of red and browns - more like the colours you might find in your natural tan rather than anything too TOWIE-esque orange. 6 6 J U LY 2 0 1 2
Fake the sporty glow you would get after a day on the beach with an extra flush to your cheeks using blusher.
SHIMMER FEATURES
A bronze eyeshadow is this season’s make-up bag must-have. One light stroke of an antique, molten shade and you can look elegantly polished in seconds. Up the intensity for an evening of summer cocktails with a deeper, rusty copper shade and lashings of mascara. If one shade isn’t enough, try layering neutral bronze, taupe and sand dune shades. An unexpected vibrant flash of colour like sky blue or citrus yellow will also make your eyes smoulder against a tan. Dick Page, artistic director for Shiseido, says: “Blend a shimmering pale gold on the entire upper lid up to the brow line and a bronze copper just across the lid. “Define the inner corners with a surprise pop of aquamarine blue colour.”
BODY BEAUTIFUL
There’s one bronze beauty look that’s never going to catch on and

that’s the two-tone dark face/pale limbs effect. For an all-over glow, try an instant bronzing lotion to look luminous in 20 minutes flat. Self-tan products today are intelligent enough to be rain and sweat resistant but wash off in the shower. “A self-tan can illuminate your skin helping you not look as tired and washed out,” explains Athena Skouvakis, Piz Buin make-up artist. “It’s important not to make the skin appear too dark - a natural shade is key to pulling off that sun-kissed radiant look. From my experience, you should only ever aim to go two shades darker than your current natural skin tone.”
SUN-BAKED LIMBS
Once you’re basking in your own bronzed glory, emphasise the look further with some magic metallic enhancers. “A bronzed body is seen as a priceless accessory all year round,” says make-up artist Daniel Sandler. “Try a body shimmer to add a glamorous finishing touch and warm, golden highlights to your skin whether you have a natural or faux tan.” Make the most of the fact you can flash your pins before they’re back in thick opaque tights. Create supermodellong legs using a contouring bronzing technique. Sandler suggests: “Apply down the centre of the backs of legs, concentrating in a straight line from backs of thighs to ankles. Gently blend edges to achieve reflective dimension but avoid a stripe effect.”
TRIED & TESTED
Claire Macdonald gives the mascara wand the elbow with eyelash extensions. I wanted a dramatic lash look for my wedding which would a) mean I could avoid panda eyes if crying ensued and b) last until I unpacked my honeymoon clothes. With a hectic pre-wedding schedule Flutter was the answer to my skinny lash prayers as the eye-enhancing therapists come to your own home. A thorough inspection of my eye shape and current lash length and thickness was the first step. Due to my long lash length, my therapist thoughtfully advised me against my intended feline look so we went ahead with the ‘Va-va-Voom’ featuring longer lashes in the centre and shorter at the corners for a fuller effect. The entire treatment is bespoke to your own eyelashes and as I’m blessed with relatively lengthy ones, the therapist used the longest extensions available for full impact and to achieve a curled effect rather than poker straight. Goodbye mascara AND eyelash curlers. Tens of long, luscious lashes were painstakingly and individually applied for 90 minutes. The extensions are carefully glued onto your existing eyelashes so they shed when your own lashes naturally fall out. Though the treatment is long, as your eyes remain closed throughout and you’re lying back, it’s pretty relaxing - and the results are worth it. I open my eyes to fuller, thicker, longer looking lashes that didn’t look remotely fake. I take note of the therapist’s aftercare advise for extra lash longevity - use a non oil-based eye make-up remover or cleanser and a dry mascara comb to keep any unruly extensions in check. Mascara can be worn although it’s tricky to remove and I didn’t feel I needed it. My Va-va-Vooms were perfect for a long holiday but after three weeks I felt that they’d run their course and started twisting and falling out so returned to my therapist to have them professionally removed. And that’s the hardest part - I’m missing my extra Flutter already.

Julia then took a lot of care in cutting and styling my wig so that it not only suited me but looked completely natural. STRETCH MARK REMOVAL USING CARBOXYTHERAPY & CELLULITE REMOVAL USING VELASHAPE
DR. ARIEL HAUS Has Solutions To Restore Your Body This Summer
D
r Ariel Haus is an expert using Carboxytherapy and has used this procedure in his Brazilian clinic for over 10 years. In the UK Dr Haus has just unveiled treatments using Carboxytherapy specifically targeting Stretch Marks. Dr Haus’ Harley Street clinic already offers Carboxytherapy treatments combating dark under eye bags and these have proved very popular. Carboxytherapy involves the injection of a small amount of carbon dioxide gas just beneath the skin’s surface and it delivers results by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Carbon dioxide is produced by the body naturally, and should not be confused with the potentially fatal carbon monoxide. Carboxytherapy is a popular choice for the treatment of stretch marks on the stomach and legs. Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or weight gain (e.g. pregnancy or rapid gain of fat). Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with pregnancy. A minimally-invasive treatment that is virtually painless, it can be done in around 5 minutes. Following treatment the skin texture will improve. Between 6-12 Carboxytherapy treatments are usually required for stretch marks, all spaced one week apart. This is a treatment that is suitable for all skin types and involves no downtime following the treatment. Carboxytherapy dates back to the 1930s and by using this additional carbon dioxide the body recovers from poor blood flow and in turn the body reacts by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Another great summer bikini season solution is VelaShape. VelaShape II combines gentle light and radio frequency energies (elōs™) with mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to manipulate the

The heat from the light and RF energies increases metabolism of this fatty layer and shrinks the size of fat cells. The mechanical rollers and vacuum suction act on the blood vessels to increase circulation to the local area,
as well as massaging the skin to achieve a smoother, less dimpled surface appearance. elaShape II offers a gradual improvement of cellulite in treated areas, firmer and tighter skin surfaces are also reported. 4-6 sessions are initially recommended over the space of just over a week. Maintenance treatments are done once a month. Treatment is safe and effective. Dr Ariel Haus is registered as a medical practitioner in Brazil, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The specific non-invasive cosmetic treatments that Dr. Haus offers are: • Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and also to rejuvenate the skin • Treatments to address wrinkles and frown lines • Dermal fillers (bioplasty and Restylane SUBQ) to smooth out deeper wrinkles and lines • Skin treatments, rejuvenation and hair removal using eMax laser • Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with Velashape, the latest technology to achieve non-surgical liposuction. In addition to his private clinic in Harley Street, London, Dr. Haus also works in the NHS and by arrangement is also able to see patients in Rio de Janeiro. Dr Ariel Haus only uses non-invasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States.

You’ll need good teeth to eat good food Unless semolina is your desired dish of the day, best learn to look after your teeth. Good dental hygiene is the only reliable method to be sure that you can bite into a crisp carrot or a good steak when you want to for the rest of your life.
All good dentists go on and on about looking after your teeth and gums. They make money from providing dental treatment yet they still prefer you to make sure you don’t need them because you’ve fulfilled your part of the deal: you are responsible for your own dental hygiene. Good dental health covers all aspects of your mouth, especially the teeth and gums. So you can eat, speak, laugh and look nice, your teeth and gums need to be cared for by you and your dentist and hygienist. The alternative is tooth decay, fillings, bleeding gums, tooth loss and possibly bad breath. It’s not a pretty picture, is it? The health of your mouth is linked to that of your overall health. The ability to chew and swallow food is essential for obtaining the nutrition we need for our wellbeing. But eating and drinking the wrong food can be part of the problem. For many years the message to prevent tooth decay was to avoid sugar and sugary food and drinks. However, as well as sweets and fizzy pop, pasta, rice, potato crisps, some fruits and even bread can promote acid formation in plaque. This is why you must rinse your mouth, or preferably brush your teeth, after meals. The characteristics of a food, especially how strongly it clings to teeth, influences how quickly tooth decay starts. For example crisps and biscuits stick to teeth for longer periods than many sweets because soluble sugars as used in some sweets are washed away more quickly by saliva. Dried fruit, although great for digestive health, sticks to the teeth like glue. Dental decay, the most common disorder affecting the teeth, is caused by bacteria which form a sticky film or pellicle dental plaque - on the surfaces of the tooth. The billions of bacteria in the plaque use carbohydrates from food and drink and produce acids which actually dissolve the minerals of the tooth and, before you know it, there is a hole and you need a filling. Tooth decay is not inevitable and is preventable. One of the best weapons you have is always with you: saliva - it clears food debris from your mouth, neutralises the acids produced from plaque bacteria and provides calcium and phosphate to the teeth in a smart process called remineralisation. This takes forty minutes from the last ingestion of food.
Many dentists recommend rinsing with fresh water after eating, though brushing after meals is better if you can. And by the way: daily flossing is a non-negotiable component of good dental hygiene. There are some great new gadgets to help with the daily floss – look out for small and brightly coloured interdental brushes at your dentist or local pharmacy. Kids will love using these. All the dentists and hygienists at the White Dental Company will be pleased to advise. Regular dental check-ups and visits to the practice hygienist will help detect, monitor and reduce potential problems. The hygienist’s job is to remove plaque and this will help to lessen the incidence of dental decay. If very little plaque is present, the amount of acid formed is insignificant and the likelihood of decay is significantly reduced. If your teeth are in trouble, fear not as all is not lost. Far from it. A good professional practice, and The White Dental Company is just such a place, can help you with all your dental requirements. For patients who require replacement teeth, dental implants can be fitted in one day and there is a variety of techniques to minimise any discomfort and to ensure you are comfortable during and after the procedure. If your problem is a smile that is less than brilliant, or you are not happy with the state of your teeth and gums, using minimally invasive techniques the White Dental team will give a you smile that you will be proud of - and teeth that will last you a lifetime! Ideally you should visit the hygienist and have a check-up every six months. Discuss a regular plan with your dentist and once it is in place, put it in your diary in pen and stick to it. Unless, of course, you like semolina…

Olay Essentials Complete Care SPF30, £10.29
JESSICA ENNIS
Heptathlete Jessica Ennis, 26, is the face of Olay Essentials. Q: DESCRIBE YOUR DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE? I’m training pretty much every day so it’s important for me to keep my skin clean and hydrated. I’ll start off by cleansing my skin in the morning with a smoothing scrub you can use in the shower. Then I’ll always protect my skin with an SPF as a lot of my training is outdoors. The Olay Essentials Complete Care SPF30 is ideal as it’s really light so doesn’t clog my pores and make me sweat more.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUSTHAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? Bobbi Brown cosmetics - especially their foundations. I also love MAC for eyeliners and mascaras, and they also do a lovely Lip Conditioner.
Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RECOVER AFTER A HARD TRAINING SESSION? I love a long hot soak in the bath. My favourite product is the Elemis Aching Muscle Super Soak - it smells a bit like Deep Heat! When Q: DO YOU WEAR MAKE-UP I have some downtime, I love to go to a spa with friends. I don’t really TO TRAIN OR COMPETE? have massages as I have plenty of Absolutely. Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek 24h Frizz Fighter, £4.49
VICTORIA PENDLETON Track cyclist Victoria Pendleton, 31, is the face of Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek. Q: WHAT’S YOUR MAKE-UP MANTRA? It’s always been important to me to look good when I’m racing. I even like to have painted nails when I ride. I like the saying, ‘Look good, feel good, go good!’ I definitely think looking good helps you feel more confident so I’ll wear a little mascara, tinted moisturiser and lip balm. I always reapply before getting up on the podium. Q: WHICH AREAS REALLY SUFFER BECAUSE OF YOUR SPORT? Training with a helmet on every day means my hair is prone to a lot of frizz so I need a haircare regime that helps protect against helmet hair! I love to leave in a hydrating smoothing product after washing like Pantene’s Smooth & Sleek 24h Frizz Fighter to combat any frizziness. Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY
PRODUCTS? I love Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream or Neom Organics Moroccan Blush Rose Oil for some indulgent pampering. In my make-up bag I rely on Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF20, By Terry Touche Veloutee highlighting concealer and Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy.
Q: BEING A WATER BABY, HOW DOES THE POOL AFFECT YOUR SKIN? My beauty regime is quite easy. Because I’m a swimmer the chlorine can really make my skin dry so afterwards I shower, exfoliate my face and then moisturise. When I get home from training it’s just a case of applying some more moisturiser and a slick of mascara and then I feel a little bit more girly again. Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO PAMPER YOURSELF? I love to paint my fingernails and toes when I’m watching TV. Being in the pool all day isn’t very glamorous so it’s nice to treat myself when I’m not training. Dior nail polish in Blue Label is my current favourite but I have to keep my nails short to avoid scratching other swimmers in the pool. Q: WHAT ARE YOUR
MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I love using Bliss Lemon + Sage Body Scrub because it smells so fresh and leaves my skin feeling pampered. I reach for Aussie 3 Minute Miracle deep conditioner twice a week to keep my hair soft, shiny and conditioned. Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MAKEUP TRICK? I would never go for false lashes but if you wiggle a mascara brush from the root of your lashes up to the top you can really plump your eyelashes. I apply a few coats of Max Factor’s False Lash Effect Gold Edition Mascara for real ‘wow’ impact. When it’s on I’m often surprised they’re my own lashes! Q: ANY PLANS FOR A PREOLYMPICS MAKEOVER? I’m planning on having some exciting nails for the Olympics. I love experimenting with nail polish colours. Max Factor False Lash Effect Gold Edition Mascara, £10.99
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE TO ACCENTUATE FOR A NIGHT OUT? My hair, of course! It’s crammed into a hot helmet pretty much every day so when I’m glamming up, I love to really make my hair stand out. Q: ANY PLANS FOR A PREOLYMPICS MAKEOVER? I’ll definitely have a trim before the Olympics, go for a facial and have my nails done. I certainly won’t have much time to pamper myself during the Games! J U LY 2 0 1 2 7 7

SPORTS INJURIES
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE! PLAYING SPORT AND TAKING REGULAR EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH. WE ALL KNOW THAT STAYING ACTIVE THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE IMPROVES OUR MOOD, SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SENSE OF WELL BEING AS WELL AS HELPING US MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT AND REDUCING OUR RISK OF DEVELOPING SERIOUS DISEASES AS WE GET OLDER SUCH AS HEART DISEASE OR CANCER. Occasionally though, playing sports can lead to injury. How can you help to protect yourself from injury? BE FIT FOR YOUR SPORT It is often the weekend exerciser that has a high rate of injury. You should train for your sport, not expect your sport to get you fit. Many injuries could be prevented by following a conditioning programme of exercises designed to prepare you for your chosen sport. STICK TO THE RULES Sport rules are designed to keep things safe. This is especially true of contact sports. Know the rules and follow them. WEAR THE RIGHT GEAR Protective pads, mouth guards, helmets, gloves, etc. are designed to 7 8 J U LY 2 0 1 2
protect you and keep you safe. Never play without your protective gear. WARM UP Warm muscles are less susceptible to injuries. A proper warm up is essential for injury protection. Tailor your warm up to your sport with specific exercises dependent upon your activity.
Warm ups should especially focus on previously injured areas. You will also increase your chance of injury if you exercise on a high number of consecutive days. Recovery days reduce injury rates by giving muscles and connective tissues an opportunity to repair between training sessions.
DON’T PLAY WHEN YOU ARE TIRED OR IN PAIN This predisposes you to injury. Pain indicates a problem. Always pay attention to the warning signs your body provides.
If you are struggling with an injury and you are not sure what to do next why not attend the Sports Injuries Clinic at Ashtead Hospital? Your call will be answered by a Physiotherapist who can advise you on the most appropriate action to take.
There are two factors that outweigh the rest when it comes to predicting a sports injury. Previous injuries to a muscle or joint can develop into chronic problems for sportsmen.
The Ashtead Hospital Sports Injuries Clinic offers access to screening, diagnosis, rehabilitation and, if necessary, surgical treatment of acute and chronic sports injuries.
Whether you are suffering with an acute sports injury, or a niggling problem that you are aware of when you play sport, you may wish to seek the opinion of a specialist so that you can return to sport quickly. GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR GARDEN
WHAT A SUMMER! I KNOW THE ENGLISH ARE STEREOTYPED AS ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER, BUT THIS YEAR SURELY BEATS ALL THE RECORDS IN LIVING MEMORY FOR THE LACK OF A SUMMER. EVERY TIME WE THINK WE HAVE A CHANCE OF SOME GOOD WEATHER THE RAINS FALL AGAIN. As I type now the sun is actually beating down outside and it is quite warm, however the forecast for today and the coming week is actually supposed to be overcast and showers! We will see. Enjoy it whilst you can. Every cloud has a silver lining however, provided you can see it through the rain. The plants in my 8 4 J U LY 2 0 1 2
garden and the nursery are looking lush and healthy, enjoying the cool damp weather. The other noticeable difference looking around the area is the relative lack of colour from bedding plants in people’s gardens, which usually by this time of year are coming into their own. Much of this is due to people holding off on planting bedding this year due
to the poor weather. All is not lost, although generally it is very late now to plant traditional bedding, other plants such as herbaceous plants, which some people also refer to as cottage garden plants, provide colour long into the autumn. Herbaceous plants such as rudbeckia, helenium and crocosmia
are just a few of the varieties available. These can be treated as bedding, lifting them in the late autumn or being hardy they can be left in the ground over winter where they will bulk up and provide an even better display next year. This makes them great value for money compared with large bedding plants.

Most soils have now got very good water content which also allows for planting of other plants such as shrubs and trees. Usually at this time of year I recommend leaving planting until the end of August for people to get their holidays over.
When you are choosing shrubs to provide instant colour in the summer and autumn you are fairly restricted for choice. Most of the conspicuously flowering trees and shrubs have finished flowering by now.
The other option is to ensure they have an irrigation system to keep the watering going when they are away. This year planting large plants at this time will present much less of a problem due to the high ground water levels. For any of you worried about water restrictions, you will also hopefully be aware that the hosepipe ban that was imposed earlier in the year has been removed, which will allow you to use hoses and irrigation systems to water your newly planted purchases.
Shrubs that are still in flower at this time of year include buddleia, with their long flowers that rightly give it it’s common name the ‘butterfly bush’ due to it’s irresistible attraction to butterflies. Another favourite for scent at this time of year is the lavender plant an excellent choice for borders and dry sunny areas. One shrub to go for if you want a blaze of colour is the hydrangea with their large flowers. Most
people just think of the large ball shaped mop headed hydrangeas, but there are more delicate lacecap ones, with their filigree like flat heads or the cones shaped paniculata types and even one that likes a north facing aspect the hydrangea petiolaris. Other more subtle shrubs that provide autumn colour are the berried shrubs such as the pyracantha, which are a mass of white flower still in my garden; these will soon be displaced by the red or orange berries which then last well into winter. The other category of shrubs that should not be forgotten are the foliage ones, both ones with colourful leaves in the summer
such as the golden or red leaved cotinus and the larger group that display autumn colour, such as the Japanese Acers. What ever the time of year there is always a plant to provide interest and to brighten up your garden.

I used to love watching fish when I was a kida s My parents had this beautiful aquarium in our lounge. I can remember gazing for hours at the magical weightless world. One day, my dad told me something I’ve never heard before and never heard since. Always trying to provoke me to think, he said, “Remember, a dead fish can float downstream, but it takes a live one to swim upstream.” At the time, I didn’t really know what he meant, but as I grew older I learnt that he was teaching me to think my 8 8 J U LY 2 0 1 2
own way. Not to accept the norm. Little did I know then that I would grow up to discover biOrb. At biOrb they don’t just look at things differently, they do things differently. WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT THEM?
For nearly 100 years aquariums have been made pretty much the same way. Start with a glass box and add the light and filter afterwards. Unsurprisingly this isn’t very efficient. Imagine if car design had stayed the same for this long, we’d still be driving “horseless carriages”. In 1999 Reef One, the manufacturers of the biOrb ripped up
HOUSE & GARDEN
the rule book and started again. They set out on a mission to make better aquariums. Reef One said “We wanted them to be so good, that you’d want to tell your friends about them”. SO HOW DID THEY DO IT?
They started with the filter. In many traditional aquariums the filter is on the side or at the top. In a biOrb it’s at the bottom, which might seem unimportant until you realise that fish waste sinks. Think about it, there’s no point vacuuming your ceiling when the dirt is on the floor. The filter itself takes about 40 seconds to change and only needs doing about once a month. Water oxygenation was the next challenge. See the tube in the middle of the aquarium? It has an airline running into it. Air is blown through the base of a biOrb up to the surface. This has two main benefits, it 100% oxygenates the water and it drives a circular water flow making sure all the water passes through the filter.
HOW’S IT MADE?
biOrbs are made from acrylic, not glass. Acrylic is ten times stronger than glass. It’s also clearer. Acrylic has a transparency rate of 93% making it the clearest material known. Glass only allows 70% of light to pass through and thick glass always has a green tint. The final challenge was lighting. In a biOrb, the lighting is always built in – you’d be forgiven for not even knowing it was there that is, until you switch it on. On some models the lighting is fully automatic. There is a sunrise, daylight, sunset and a blue moonlight set on a 24 hour cycle. All in all, the biOrb is a low maintenance aquarium for people who’d like to keep fish, but think it’s too much work. With over a million sold worldwide, there are plenty of people enjoying them. For more information visit www.reef-one.com

WHEN (KITCHEN)
SIZE MATTERS
KITCHENS ARE THE ULTIMATE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL ROOM THESE DAYS, WHERE THE FAMILY GATHER TO COOK, EAT, SOCIALISE, AND THEY MAY EVEN DOUBLE UP AS A WORK SPACE. That’s fine, if your lucky enough to have a kitchen the size of an aircraft hanger, like the enviable, dream spaces portrayed in glossy magazines. But as new homes are generally smaller today than they were 30 years ago (according to a study by the Royal Institute of British Architects), many of us will be dealing with a smaller space than we’d ideally like. “Nowadays properties are getting smaller, which in turn means that consumers are searching for a smaller kitchen to suit their needs and home,” says Jason McNulty, head of product development at Wren Kitchens. “But smaller needn’t mean less functional or less stylish.” Planning how you use the space is key, so that not an inch is wasted and, if possible, has at least one area - even if only a breakfast bar - where you can eat or utilise as an extra work surface. Also consider carefully what you need to include in your kitchen. If possible, move appliances into other rooms in the house - for example, a freezer can go in a garage, a washing machine in a utility room or bathroom, as this helps free up vital space in the kitchen. If 9 0 J U LY 2 0 1 2

you’re still in a stew, here’s what the experts have to say about tackling the most common kitchen dilemmas.
SPACE STARVED
Even if your kitchen feels more like a coat cupboard, you can improve the situation by making the most of the space you do have available - from the floor to the ceiling. “Too many wall units can make the kitchen feel cluttered as this is where the eye is drawn first. Choose tall wall units that provide plenty of space without taking up too much room,” says Marco Rossi, head of product for Magnet Kitchens. Shelves, racks and hooks attached to walls or ceilings are a perfect way to keep your kitchen tidy and work surfaces clutter-free. Light colours for the walls and units can also help to create the illusion of space in the most bijou of kitchens. Interior designer, Abigail Ahern suggests painting kitchen cabinets the same colour as the walls. “If the unit colour matches the walls, it gives an illusion of space,” she says. Shiny or glossy finishes on walls, units and splashbacks add to this illusion by reflecting light around the room.

them just like any other room with lamps on counters, art on walls, and colourful heaps of recipe books. “It’s a good trick because, rather than focusing on the shape, your eye focuses on the cool accessories.”
Top tips... As well as visual tricks, it’s worth considering smaller than standard appliances. Many manufacturers produce slimline dishwashers, ovens and coffee machines designed especially for smaller kitchens. “A compact multifunction oven is a great way to make the most of precious space,” says Marco Rossi. “Try a built-in or built-under integrated fridge that will sit behind a typical unit door.” Get the look An APPLAD white kitchen with LINDSAL porcelain handles and NUMERAR oiled solid birch worktop, from £260, Ikea; and Bosch’s slimline dishwasher, £299, John Lewis could fit a tight space.
GALLEY GOSH
Galley kitchens are notoriously tricky with their long, narrow shape, but the right planning you can turn this to your advantage, says Abigail Ahern. “One of the secrets is open shelving on the walls so you avoid dominating wall units,” she says. “Concealing the fridge, dishwasher, washing machine behind cabinetry panels will make the kitchen feel more streamlined. “And no matter what the colour on the walls, paint the ceiling in the same hue - this will open and expand the space.” While a galley kitchen is an extremely functional space (it’s a layout preferred by many professional chefs) one of its challenges is making sure it doesn’t feel too enclosed. Enhancing lighting works wonders in these spaces which often lack natural light, advises TV interior designer Richard Randall. “Feature lighting, like up-lit shelving or hanging a mirror on a wall to reflect more light, can both work well.” Using glossy or glass-fronted units with LED downlighters or LED-illuminated shelves inside will also create extra light and ambience.
APPLAD WHITE KITCHEN WITH LINDSDAL PORCELAIN HANDLES AND NUMERAR OILED SOLID BIRCH WORKTOP, FROM £260, IKEA
Get the look Illuminated glass shelves, £200 (60cm) and £235 (90cm), can be incorporated in kitchens from Neil Lerner, specialists in kitchen design. A bespoke galley kitchen, starts from £15,000, from Barnes of Ashburton. On a tight budget? A NORBERG wall-mounted drop-leaf table, £29, Ikea could improve a space.
U-SHAPED SHAKE-UP
A U-shaped layout is one of the most functional kitchen styles. “With three walls to work with, you can position the oven and hob in the centre of the room and the fridge and sink around it on either side, forming a compact and practical ‘working triangle’,” says Belinda Corani, founder of www.houseconscious.com. Debbie Bowden, a designer at bespoke kitchen company Barnes of Ashburton, agrees. “If you can accommodate a central island, scale it down and create a sociable place for guests to perch,” she suggests. “If the size of your kitchen won’t allow a fixed island, a butcher’s trolley is a stylish alternative, providing additional storage and worktop space.” Top tips... Make sure your kitchen still has style and character, says Abigail Ahern. “I’ve seen some incredibly odd-shaped kitchens, but what made them stand out is how the owners accessorise

A First Collection Contour pearwoodeffect kitchen, from £3,500 - £4,000 for units only, John Lewis, could suit this shape room.
WHAT THE L!
On the face of it, an L-shaped kitchen may seem like an awkward space to deal with, but in reality it’s one of the best layouts for creating a sociable, open atmosphere, says Belinda Corani. “Include a breakfast bar to one side of the kitchen to create a small area for entertaining or dining,” she suggests. “If that’s impossible, a telescopic pull-out table which can be folded away behind a kitchen cabinet drawer front could suffice,” says Gerald Jones, managing director at Masterclass Kitchens. Top tips... “Make the most of every inch of space with integral storage solutions, such as pan drawers, curved corner units and cantilever carousels,” advises Jude Keenan, kitchen planner at John Lewis’s Oxford Street London store. She also suggests positioning tall units at the end of a run, away from windows, to avoid blocking out light. TRANSFORM YOUR WINDOWS FOR SUMMER, BY SARAH QUILLIAM, HEAD OF PRODUCT DESIGN AT HILLARYS.

indows are the eyes to the world so it makes sense to dress them well,” says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys. She believes that putting up a new blind, curtain or shutter can be a great start to adding or changing the style of a room. And with the promise of longer, lighter days ahead it’s important that your window dressings also make the most of the light while controlling its flow when shade is needed. “If you’re a fan of opening up your home during the warmer months and letting the light flood in then curtains are a great option, “says Sarah. And you can maintain a feeling of summer all year round by choosing fabrics in light, fresh colours. It’s a good idea to make sure the curtains reach all the way to the floor and are fully lined, this way when the cooler months arrive, you can pull them closed and keep the chill out – it may even save you a few pennies on the heating bill too. “Shutters are also steaming ahead in the style stakes, “continues Sarah. “Once all it took was the twitch of a net curtain, but now the

UK’s nosey neighbours are more likely to be peering through the slats of a shutter! “With their sleek good looks and practicality they have many plus points giving privacy, light control, sound and draught proofing. And like a key piece of furniture, shutters stand the test of time as more homeowners opt to buy once and buy well rather than going for an off-the-shelf fashion fix.” Pleats are a massive trend in fashion this season and where the High Street leads, interior design invariably follows. Many pleated blind fabrics feature a solar reflective backing so the blind can reflect heat and light from the sun to help keep you cool in the summer whilst retaining heat in the chillier months. “It’s also worth noting that tab pleated blinds which have no cords or loops are completely child safe and therefore the ideal choice for a nursery or child’s bedroom. PERSONAL INJURY LAW
BARLOW ROBBINS TEAM
RUNS FOR ‘HEADWAY’
W
hiplash injuries have been making news recently, owing to the exposure of ‘scams’ where people have made false insurance claims, forcing up insurance premiums as a result. However, the exposure of these antics risks diverting attention away from the tragedy of acquired brain injury and its potentially devastating long term effects. Barlow Robbins LLP has a leading specialist brain injury team dealing with such cases. Helen Goatley, who heads the team, says: “Brain injury is generally caused by anoxia (no oxygen) or hypoxia (reduced oxygen) at birth, during surgery or following trauma when the head is struck or moved violently, as in whiplash. It can have a wide range of effects, from physical problems such as uncoordinated movement to cognitive issues with concentration, remembering and speaking.’
with you and the difficulties you face. Seemingly small things like reminding you about appointments or listening patiently can make a huge difference.” The firm’s specialist expertise has brought them into contact with Headway, the charity that works to improve lives after brain injury. This year three Barlow Robbins employees ran the London Marathon to support the charity. Samantha Simpson, Debbie Leeland and Jo Kemp took up the challenge and raised £2,500 for Guildford-based Headway Surrey. Debbie said: “This was my second marathon, but I still found the experience awe-inspiring and the support of family, friends and Headway along the route gave us such a boost.” Jo said: “I was surprised at how much I enjoyed myself, particularly the feeling crossing the finish line. It feels even better knowing you have been able to raise money for a worthy cause.”
“We have helped a number of people over the years and it has given us a unique insight into how to deal with brain injured clients. It is a very worrying time for the families, when someone is very ill indeed and our extensive training in the impacts of brain injury means we know how to deal
