he first day of the festival, Friday 13th July, has a distinctly 80’s and classics theme this year. Headed up by the legendary Jools Holland with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, featuring vocal talent from Fine Young Cannibals frontman, Roland Gift; the day also has performances from ABC, Heaven 17, The Straits, newly confirmed The Doors Alive (easily the finest Doors tribute band around!), The South, (performing classic hits such as “A Little Time”) and cult punk band Buzzcocks! Weddings at Loseley Park or the first time Loseley is making The Great Hall and the beautiful, awardwinning Walled Garden exclusive to weddings on Fridays and Saturdays from May 2013. The two areas will remain closed to the public through the high wedding season till the end of September. Loseley, which has been voted a Top Ten UK Wedding Venue, is doing this to give total privacy to wedding parties. “We feel that it is only fair for couples and their
16 JUNE2012
families to have the house and garden to themselves on such a special day, says Michael MoreMolyneux, owner of Loseley Park. He is also introducing a new facility to wedding couples during the winter months, so that those who are just having their reception at Loseley will also be able to use the Great Hall in Loseley House for a drinks reception for an hour on arrival. Some restrictions apply like the number of children. Meanwhile, the trend continues
for off-peak weddings during the week, says Michael, and now at least three in ten weddings take place during the autumn and winter months. This compares with none 10 years ago. Why?
The first reason is that people are looking for competitive rates at certain times of the year and for late availability, bearing in mind it can be five times less dear to marry on a Tuesday in February than a Saturday in May. Weekday weddings have certainly become more popular and school holidays and Easter are
particularly liked by teachers. Secondly, people are less traditional now than previously, and they love the roaring fires in the House and the prospect of some winter sun for their honeymoon.

John Constable, The Haywain, 1821 130 x 185cm
Richard Constable is the great, great grandson of John Constable, RA. Richard’s future destiny was created at a very early age, influenced by the time spent with his grandparents and his aunt, all artists in their own right, who had inherited the Constable passion for the arts. Each family member had their own studio and practiced as artists (painting). Inevitably the house pervaded the smell of paint, surrounded by many family paintings and the talk and chatter inevitably discussing art. Born in 1932, Richard won an art scholarship to Marlborough College in 1945 where he became very interested in microscopy which evoked a fascination with surrealism. He believes there is scarcely any shape or colour in nature that does not exist. Many of his works have an oriental flavour, an influence that was strengthened when he fought the Korean War in 1951—52, serving in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery and the Royal Artillery. Upon his return to England, he worked for a short time at the Natural History Museum, identifying most of the six hundred specimens he brought back from Korea. For nine years he was an art teacher before becoming a full time artist in 1967. Richard has had over 40 one man exhibitions in London, Bath, East Anglia, Eire, Singapore, West Germany, New York, Cincinnati and the Middle East. He has also exhibited in the Spanish Biennale and the Maltese Biennale. Asked if his famous ancestor would have approved of his more abstract works, Richard answers laughingly : “Constable adored his seven children and would certainly have forgiven me”.

he biggest spectator polo day in the world is held at Guards Polo Club in the heart of the Royal Park at Windsor. From this year, this historic event will be sponsored by Audi, the leading luxury carmaker. is company is no stranger to polo though, as it has been the sponsor of the England polo team for several years. is makes it the perfect partner for the leading showcase event for the England Polo Team – the Coronation Cup on the Audi International Polo Day. Last year, the sport’s governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association, in conjunction with Guards Polo Club, celebrated the centenary of the Coronation Cup, which has been played at this most famous of polo clubs for 40 of those past 100 years. Even today, the Coronation Cup is viewed by English polo players, and indeed some of the most famous international names in the sport, as

the most coveted event to play for during the English polo season. e England team manager Andrew Hine, who has also captained the England team on this day many times too, believes International Day has a flavour that cannot be matched anywhere else in the world. “You can play in the Argentine Open in Palermo, Buenos Aires, which for many is the Mecca of the sport, with the noise and 5,000 people on top of you; but when you play at Guards Polo Club in e Coronation Cup, and you hear the roar of some 25,000 people, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. No event can claim those sorts of numbers, and when you get a great, close match, and the crowd in those stands gets behind you, the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. So no pressure for Luke and his team-mates then! But win or lose, Luke, who has worn the skipper’s armband since 2006 knows it will be a match to remember. “It’s always a great occasion to be involved in,” he says. “To play for your country, and to be captain, is a high honour in any sport. It’s always a great feeling to go out there and play in front of a huge home crowd. As players, it means so much to us.” e support of Audi at this International Polo at Guards Polo Club on Sunday 22 July not only guarantees to give the best English players the opportunity to shine on this most famous of days, but is also enabling the governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association and Audi to create a platform of international events at other clubs around the country too. Audi has created an International Test Match Series – with England games at Cowdray Park in Sussex, Beaufort in Gloucestershire and, for the first time at Cheshire Racecourse too. is not only says much about the depth of talent and interest in the sport in the UK today, but also highlight’s Audi’s commitment to the oldest team sport in the world. e Audi International Day naturally becomes a late summer highlight of the British sporting calendar. However, to ensure that it does not clash with that other great sporting occasion in 2012, the London Olympics, the polo will be staged a week earlier than usual – on Sunday 22 July. Despite this date change, it remains framed around those other great sporting and social events - Henley, Wimbledon, Ascot and the Lord’s Test match and continues to offer two outstanding polo games – the Coronation Cup in the afternoon and a morning game – showcasing up-and-coming English talent. Of course this year, in honour of Her Majesty e Queen, the winners of the morning game, Young England v e Commonwealth, will receive a new cup this year – the Diamond Jubilee Trophy. Her Majesty, of course, is a huge supporter of the sport, having watched her husband and eldest son play and now two of her grandsons, HRH e Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry. Although there is a new name associated with this event, some things remain very much the same. Pomp, pageantry and elegance will be very much the order of the day, with plenty of opportunities for visitors to Guards Polo Club to enjoy some of the finest hospitality available at any sporting event. is may be courtesy of Pink Food in the Guards Members’ Marquee, with its delicious lunch and afternoon tea menu or seated within Keith’s Prowse’s Chukkas marquee. Here guests have the perfect environment from which to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing day of polo, including a wonderful Best of British menu in honour of the Diamond Jubilee. Meanwhile Chinawhite will be celebrating its 11th year at the International Polo. With hospitality options for both day and evening – or even a combination of the two, this fantastic, dramatic marquee can offer something for everyone. With leading DJ Calvin Harris headlining the decks in the evening, the marquee will become the polo party of the year – if not the decade. e Audi International Day has all the ingredients to create a polo day to remember. So whether you have an Audi invitation to its elegant lunch in the Clubhouse or planning a more informal affair with friends and family at the Club, there are plenty of opportunities to create your own lasting memories.

After the prize giving on Saturday evening, ‘Beach Party the Polo’ will kick off, infusing the chic surroundings with a festival atmosphere as live bands will perform, followed by the beats of international House DJ Colin ‘StarRocker’ Pereira. e competition is being sponsored by a range of companies, including Asahi, Sunseeker, Pommery Champagne and Amika London, and even us here at Sandbanks Life; who are set to sponsor the Scottish boys. Captain of Scotland, Jamie le Hardy said of the event: “It’s a very social weekend and it’s a lot of fun – there’s a real buzz! It’s a great spectacle. You’re right next to the action so it’s a great way of showing polo to the public.” Jamie Le Hardy is widely considered to be one of the best British players the game has seen over the last decade and has been decorated with a host of prestigious awards. Born in Dorset, into an Army family, whose parents travelled extensively throughout Jamie’s early years, his first recollection of polo was watching his father play in Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, Jamie became involved in pony club polo where his passion for the sport started to flourish and his talent clearly showed. He began his career fresh out of school; within three years he had won ‘Young Player of the Year’ award and the British Open Gold Cup: “ose two events really launched my career and since then I’ve been one of the highest rated players in England... I’m half Scottish, half English; my Mum’s Scottish. I played for England a lot in my career and now I’ve taken up the Scottish mantel and am captaining the team.” His other accolades include numerous ‘Most Valuable Player’ awards; he was the first England captain to beat Argentina since World War II and he has won the Golden Jubilee Trophy with Prince Harry. As well as being a world-class talent on the pitch, le Hardy is also a professional A Grade Umpire, and an HPA qualified coach; he owns and runs the le Hardy Polo Academy (based in Surrey) which caters for all ages and abilities: “I spend quite a bit of time coaching, developing horses and
putting a bit back into the sport... If you want to get into polo, have a look at our website and speak to me.” www.lehardypolo.com World renowned English polo-player Jack Kidd is also one of the fantastic sportsman playing during the tournament. Among his numerous achievements which include tournament victories around the world, Kidd has achieved two European gold medals in the Federation of International Polo Championships on grass and an Arena Gold Cup win in 2006. In addition to his success as an outdoor player on grass, Kidd is also perhaps one of the best known players on the Snowpolo circuit; claiming victory at numerous tournaments, perhaps most notably Cartier in St Morita. He is also a pivotal promoter in the recent launch of the Berenberg Snowpolo tournament in January. Influenced by his father who show-jumped for Great Britain at the Olympics and played polo for England, Kidd’s love of the game began at the tender age of 14, “By the time I was 17 I was a professional and twenty years later I’m still a pro”, he said. A truly passionate player, Kidd said of the game: “It’s completely addictive; the most amazing sport you could ever play; to gallop on horses and score goals... its a great, great sport!” I spoke to Kidd, who having spent the last five consecutive days on the pitch, was cooling down and getting some well earned respite. For a man who plays polo consistently throughout the year, his praise of the British Beach Polo Championships was illustrative of the fabulous weekend spectators can expect, “It’s one of the best weekends of the English polo season. I look forward to it immensely and I look forward to playing against all the other countries” Spectators can expect some exciting games, watching these world-class talents stretched to their best, as the sand surface does for a fast paced and technically demanding game: “Sand is probably the most difficult surface to play on out of them all; snow or grass. You have to be very skilled with the horse and very good at hitting the ball in the air.” When I asked him what visitors to the championships can expect, Kidd simply said, “Big parties and big polo matches. It should be a stonker!” Visit www.sandpolo.com for more information on how to book ■ JUNE2012 33

With its 160 year history, it is undoubtedly the best known regatta in the world and it holds a unique place in the respect and affection of all oarsmen – both active and retired. organisation of up to 90 races on some of the five days. The length of the Course is 1 mile 550 yards. It takes approximately seven minutes to cover, so there are often two races at once on the Course for much of the day. The number of races is, of course, reduced on each successive day, leaving only the Finals to be rowed on the last day.
Winning an event at Henley has always been considered one of the greatest achievements of a rower’s career, even amongst those who have become world champions; and a rowing life is not complete if it does not include competing at Henley.
The first rounds of the Thames, Temple, Princess Elizabeth, Wyfold, Britannia, Prince Albert and Fawley Challenge Cups will begin racing on Wednesday 27th June 2012. The racing timetable for the Wednesday will be posted on the Regatta website on the afternoon of Sunday 24th June. Since the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon. In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally called Sphairistike, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship. The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final.
The lawns at the Ground were arranged in such a way that the principal court was situated in the middle with the others arranged around it; hence the title ‘Centre Court’, which was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road opened by King George V. The foresight of building the present stadium, designed to hold 14,000 people, did more to popularise the game worldwide than anything that has happened to date. However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the Centre Court was once more at the centre of the tournament. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description. By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since. JUNE2012 49

ENTER THE LADIES In 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles was started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883. OVERSEAS CHAMPIONS By the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and in 1905 May Sutton of the United States became the first Champion from overseas when she won the Ladies’ Singles. She repeated her success in 1907, the year when Norman Brookes of Australia became the first Gentlemen’s Singles champion from overseas. Since that year, only two players from Great Britain, Arthur Gore and Fred Perry, have managed to win the Men’s Singles while there have been five British Ladies’ Champions since Wimbledon moved to Church Road — Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer, Ann Jones and Virginia Wade. WARTIME WIMBLEDON During the Second World War the Club managed to remain open despite a severe curtailment of staff. The premises were used for a variety of civil defence and military functions such as fire and ambulance services, Home Guard and a decontamination unit. Troops stationed within the vicinity were allowed to use the main concourse for drilling. Another familiar sight around the ground was a small farmyard consisting of pigs, hens, geese, rabbits, etc. In October 1940 a ‘stick’ of five 500lb bombs struck Centre Court, resulting in the loss of 1,200 seats.
50 JUNE2012
With the war in Europe over, signs of normality began to return to Wimbledon during June and July 1945, when a series of matches between Allied servicemen took place on the old No. 1 Court, which had escaped enemy action. Early in 1946 the decision was taken to resume The Championships that summer. In more recent years long-standing records have been broken. In 1980 Bjorn Borg of Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in the post-challenge round era; a feat replicated by Roger Federer between 2003 and 2007. In 1985 Boris Becker, aged 17, became the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. In 1987 Martina Navratilova of the United States became the first player to win the Ladies’ Singles six times in succession and in 1990 she attained the all-time record of nine victories in the event. Pete Sampras of the United States registered his seventh win in 2000 and in 2001, Goran Ivanisevic became the first wildcard to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year gone by without alteration to the ground or some organisational change taking place. In recent years the momentum has increased and major works programmes have provided improved facilities for the players, spectators, officials and media. WIMBLEDON 2012 Wimbledon 2012 will see the finest players from over 60 countries compete in the five main Championships events. In the second week
FEATURE
of the Tournament, these players will be joined by Juniors, Veteran and Wheelchair competitors, playing in their own events on the Championships’ lawns. The All England Club, Wimbledon has announced that the total prize money at this year’s 126th Championships, will be £16.1million, an increase of 10% on 2011. Grounds open at 10:30am each day. On Courts No.2–19, play is provisionally scheduled to start at 11:30am for main draw matches on at least the first eight days and at 11:00am for the Junior matches on the middle Saturday and during the second week. Centre Court play scheduled to start at 1pm, except the last two days when 2pm. No.1 Court play scheduled to start at 1pm for all 13 days. CHANGES TO THE ORDER OF PLAY The Club tries to play all matches on the courts and days published. However, occasionally it is necessary to switch a match from one court to another. This can be for a number of reasons. Some players remain involved in several events towards the end of The Championships and it may be necessary to move a match to avoid a clash. The Club tries to give similar rest periods between matches for players due to play each other. The majority of tickets for The Championships are allocated through the Public Ballot. Applications for the 2012 Ballot are now closed. The Ticket Office is open for all ticketing queries, normal opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm (excl. Bank Holidays). Tel: 020 8971 2473. Please Note: The Ticket Office is available for all ticket and ballot enquiries but is NOT a Box Office.

London In Full Bloom! CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2012 HIGHLIGHTS The Chelsea Flower show is one of the most famous flower shows in the world, put on each year by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. It is the garden design equivalent of a catwalk at a fashion show.
Year on year, garden designers at the Chelsea Flower Show are expected to put on a novel show, and this year certainly did not disappoint.
The flower show sold out in record time this year, as the UK’s love affair with gardening shows no sign of dimming.A patriotic flavour dominated this year’s Show with Union Flags, topiary corgis and nostalgic touches in many displays.
THE TALKING POINTS THIS YEAR... The show gardens always dominate the media headlines, though it is often noted it is the
Great Pavilion that represents true Chelsea. The skill of nurseries exhibit to such a high standard, with such attention to detail irrespective of the respective natural flowering seasons. Diarmuid Gavin set the tongues wagging again with his giant pyramid -
the Westland Magical Garden won the award for most creative show garden and certainly looked the part on Press Day with Chelsea pensioners forming a guard of honour ringing each of the pyramid’s seven terraces. Celebrities were spotted at the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show decorating miniature plant pots to help raise funds for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. Pot Art were auctioned online so that more school children have access to gardening.

Pots by Alan Titchmarsh and Rachel de Thame, presenters of the BBC Chelsea Flower Show programmes, were added to the online eBay auction, and within a few hours had reached over £200 each. Ricky Gervais, Antonio Carlucci, Rob Brydon, Lorraine Pascale and Esther Rantzen to name a few, joined the Pot Art line up at the RHS show. Joan Collins, Julian Fellowes and Miranda Richardson also stopped by to see their pots showcased alongside other participants, including Dame Judi Dench, Sir Paul Smith, Pixie Lott and Fearne Cotton. The plants pots are being auctioned online to raise money for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, which helps more than half of all British schools to get pupils growing. Ricky Gervais said: “Everyone should do something creative and I can’t think of anything better than appreciating the beauty of nature. That is why I support a campaign that encourages kids to get involved in gardening.” The RHS Campaign for School Gardening supports over half of all schools in the UK, engaging

three million children, who learn about plants, gardening and the environment. The campaign has gone from strength to strength since launching less than five years ago. RHS research shows that gardening boosts children’s development, teaches life skills and makes them happier and healthier.

The brooch was specially designed and inspired by Iris ungicularis, the flower chosen by the RHS to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. To welcome HM The Queen when she visited the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012, the RHS commissioned a large floral bedding scheme designed by the Parish of St Helier, Jersey. The scheme was a three dimensional tiered design created from a mixture of summer flowering and foliage plants. The centrepiece was a rotating Jersey Accession Issue Postal stamp.

BBC PROMS 2012 International orchestras, animated artists and an iconic Barenboim Beethoven cycle for BBC Proms 2012.
T
he 2012 BBC Proms has revealed details of the broad-ranging programme of events planned for its 118th season. Opening at the Royal Albert Hall on 13th July 2012, the festival promises two months of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, this summer promises to be unlike any other, and as such, the Proms is delighted to be part of theLondon 2012 Festival. Throughout the season there is music to reflect these major events, and on the opening night of the Proms, four British conductors take to the Royal Albert Hall stage to ‘pass the baton’: Martyn Brabbins,Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner and Sir Roger Norrington. Daniel Barenboim and his celebrated West-Eastern Divan Orchestra make Proms history by performing all nine Beethoven symphonies - the first time the entire cycle has featured at the Proms in over 60 years -whilst also becoming the Proms’ first ever nonBBC orchestra-in-residence. English National Opera and the Royal Opera House both

perform complete operas in the same season for the first time; the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra becomes the first Brazilian orchestra to appear at the festival and in an exciting collaboration with Aardman Animations, the much-loved Wallace & Gromit characters are transported to the Royal Albert Hall stage for the world premiere of Wallace’s new work, a BBC commission! The season celebrates some of the world’s most eminent living composers including Pierre Boulez. British composers celebrating significant birthdays include Oliver Knussen and Simon
Bainbridge at 60, and Hugh Wood and Alexander Goehr at 80. There are also 150th birthday tributes to Debussy and Delius. As ever the Proms remains firmly committed to new music, with 17 BBC commissions - a further five world premieres and 14 other UK and London premieres, including versions of music by Mendelssohn and Gabrieli, previously unheard in the UK. On top of this are 10 short BBC commissions which make up the Music Walk around South Kensington, part of the centenary celebrations of John Cage.
Full details of the season and tickets are available at www.bbc.co.uk/proms or 0844 209 7353 and in person at the Royal Albert Hall
Youth is a major focus of the festival. From 4th – 6th August four youth orchestras from around the UK, as well as the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Wales, perform at the Proms. Other UK and international youth ensembles include the Juilliard Orchestra and the Aldeburgh World Orchestra, created to bring together the best young performers from around the globe. The BBC Proms Youth Choir gives its inaugural performance, part of an on-going four-year project. In addition to the six BBC performing groups who once again provide the backbone to the season, there is a stellar line up of international orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker with Sir Simon Rattle and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Bernard Haitink, who for the first time give two performances each in one season. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly also gives two concerts. In the spirit of the Proms enduring mission to make the best classical music available to everyone, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 with many televised on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Four. For the seventh year in a row, Promming tickets remain just £5 and for the first time this season, seats are half-price for under-18s. Roger Wright, Director BBC Proms and Controller BBC Radio 3, says: “From Daniel Barenboim to Wallace & Gromit, we once again look forward to welcoming the world’s greatest artists to a festival where there is something for everyone to enjoy. Promming tickets remain just £5 and there are plenty of ways for people to enjoy the events in person, on radio, television and online. The BBC’s on-going commitment in running the festival allows the Proms to be one of the best value-formoney experiences anywhere.”

WOULD YOU PAWN YOUR BELONGINGS FOR A SHORT TERM CASH SOLUTION? JESS CONTOMICHALOS TALKS TO JAMES CONSTANTINOU OF PRESTIGE PAWNBROKERS AND FINDS OUT MORE. Prestige Pawnbrokers based in the heart of affluent Weybridge, Surrey has been enjoying a recent rush of media attention. Due to the ever increasing popularity of his business, Managing Director, James Constantinou has been inundated with requests for press interviews. ‘I have seen this business grow massively over the last few years. At first I think people were slightly wary and had a very old fashioned misconception about it, mostly based on old myths about the pawn broking business and did see it as a last resort. However, most of my business is from well-connected clients whose money is tied up in their assets and who are now coming to me first’ explains James. Asked why James thinks that these wealthy people would make a pawn brokers their first stop, his explanation is simple. ‘Often these are people who’ve perhaps taken some risks in the past to accumulate their wealth and because of the recent recession, their credit rating has been affected - or, sometimes they are in between lucrative deals. They can come to me and rest assured that I will not be relying on a credit search or their employment status – I base my loan on the value of their assets – it’s that simple’ smiles James.
‘I have recently had a lot of interest from women with vintage or designer jewellery and goods in extremely good condition. They have whizzed in here with a vintage piece of jewellery and left with cash in their hand. This has given them a chance to breath, pay their bills and then reclaim their item when they’ve sorted their finances out’ explains James. awn broking is an age old profession P
DID YOU KNOW?
and dates back to Ancient Greece The word pawn is derived from the Latin pignus which means ‘for pledge’. Prestige were inundated with designer handbags after the exposure in the Daily Mail –some of them were fakes which were instantly spotted by the experts! James was recently offered Hitler’s blood stained arm band – James declined! The universal symbol of pawn broking is three gold balls, dating back to the Medici family in Italy who were money lenders. Legend has it that one of the Medici family fought a giant and slew him with three sacks of rocks. The three balls or globes became part of their family crest at a later date, and ultimately, the sign of pawn broking.
The pawn broking business works on a very simple structure. Basically, James and his team will offer up to 70% of the items value. The loan will then need to be paid back by the end of a 7 month term with interest added but can be paid back at any time during the loan term. You don’t need to make any monthly payments at all. If for any reason 66 JUNE2012
you are unable to pay back the loan in full, James will ask for the interest only for the loan period and simply extend the loan for another 7 month term.
So, with a recent interview in the Daily Mail and an appearance on BBC World News and MBC, does James think this is a fad or a short term influx of business? ‘Absolutely not! Pawn broking has been around for a very long time. We are going from strength to strength and currently getting interest from clients with cellars of wine, fine art, stamps, coins, antiques, jewellery, watches and most recently we’ve managed loans against vehicles and classic cars’ says James.
So, next time you are in need of a short term cash solution, don’t despair if the banks say no or your credit history means you’ll find it hard to get a loan, Prestige Pawnbrokers treat everyone with the same policy – your loan is granted on the value of the item – not your personal history. hopping for swimwear is enough to bring a woman really out in a sweat. But there’s such a great range of styles, colours and flattering cover-ups available that everyone can look hot on the beach, no matter what their shape or size.
If you’re very slIm:
If you have no waist and shoulders the same width as your hips, you can get away with pretty much anything bikini-wise, but make sure you go for one that makes you look feminine. Triangle bikinis look great on slim women, as do bikinis that fasten around the back of the neck (they flatter shoulders and rectangular shapes). Plus, tie bottoms look great on svelte legs. If you prefer a one-piece, go for one with geometric motifs to highlight your waist and give you shape. Choosing a simple style in an attention-grabbing colour is a good way to stand out from the crowd. 7 0 J jUuN nE e 22 00 1122
If you’re full-fIgured:
And no waist, go for a one-piece swimsuit in a matte colour to highlight your décolleté. One-pieces camouflage little sins like tummies and flab. Balcony shapes are glam and sexy. If you go for a two-piece, avoid bikini shorts or high-cut bottoms which will weigh down your figure. Whether you’re slim or full-figured, avoid: Square décolletés and horizontal stripes, which can make you look bigger than you are. If you’ve got a boyIsh, trIangular shape:
If you have large shoulder and slim hips, balance out your figure and make it more feminine in high-waisted short bikinis that lengthen your legs (these are also great at hiding any hint of a tummy!). They widen your hips and make you look more in proportion. If you have a small chest, try push-up plunge bras to give you a bit of oomph. One-piece costumes suit

you well, especially V-neck ones which widen your figure in the right places. Think Bond Girl! Avoid: Plain, shapeless ‘swimming’ costumes that make your figure look boyish. Low waists which highlight slim hips and wide shoulders. If you’re pear-shaped:
If you have big hips and slim shoulders, definately go for a bikini. Weigh out your bottom half with a balcony top that draws attention to your chest. Triangle tops tied behind the neck show off good shoulders, while low-waisted bottoms with little ties balance out your shape well. One-piece swimsuits highlight your waist, but they make your legs look shorter - or even heavier - than they really are. Avoid: High waists. They don’t flatter heavy hips and thighs. If you have well-proportIoned curves:
If your shoulders and hips are the same width and you have a slim waist, you’re lucky enough to be able to wear pretty much any kind of swimwear. Take care with one-piece costumes, though. They have to fit perfectly: if they don’t hug your curves in the right places they flatten your shape and make you look heavier than you are. If you have little love handles, avoid tight strings that make you look like you’re squeezed into your bikini. Avoid: Bandeau tops if you’re big-busted. They only flatten out your assets! Accessorise with simple jewellery and classic sunnies for a shortcut to A-List style!

You’ll need good teeth to eat good food Unless semolina is your desired dish of the day, best learn to look after your teeth. Good dental hygiene is the only reliable method to be sure that you can bite into a crisp carrot or a good steak when you want to for the rest of your life.
All good dentists go on and on about looking after your teeth and gums. They make money from providing dental treatment yet they still prefer you to make sure you don’t need them because you’ve fulfilled your part of the deal: you are responsible for your own dental hygiene. Good dental health covers all aspects of your mouth, especially the teeth and gums. So you can eat, speak, laugh and look nice, your teeth and gums need to be cared for by you and your dentist and hygienist. The alternative is tooth decay, fillings, bleeding gums, tooth loss and possibly bad breath. It’s not a pretty picture, is it? The health of your mouth is linked to that of your overall health. The ability to chew and swallow food is essential for obtaining the nutrition we need for our wellbeing. But eating and drinking the wrong food can be part of the problem. For many years the message to prevent tooth decay was to avoid sugar and sugary food and drinks. However, as well as sweets and fizzy pop, pasta, rice, potato crisps, some fruits and even bread can promote acid formation in plaque. This is why you must rinse your mouth, or preferably brush your teeth, after meals. The characteristics of a food, especially how strongly it clings to teeth, influences how quickly tooth decay starts. For example crisps and biscuits stick to teeth for longer periods than many sweets because soluble sugars as used in some sweets are washed away more quickly by saliva. Dried fruit, although great for digestive health, sticks to the teeth like glue. Dental decay, the most common disorder affecting the teeth, is caused by bacteria which form a sticky film or pellicle dental plaque - on the surfaces of the tooth. The billions of bacteria in the plaque use carbohydrates from food and drink and produce acids which actually dissolve the minerals of the tooth and, before you know it, there is a hole and you need a filling. Tooth decay is not inevitable and is preventable. One of the best weapons you have is always with you: saliva - it clears food debris from your mouth, neutralises the acids produced from plaque bacteria and provides calcium and phosphate to the teeth in a smart process called remineralisation. This takes forty minutes from the last ingestion of food.
Many dentists recommend rinsing with fresh water after eating, though brushing after meals is better if you can. And by the way: daily flossing is a non-negotiable component of good dental hygiene. There are some great new gadgets to help with the daily floss – look out for small and brightly coloured interdental brushes at your dentist or local pharmacy. Kids will love using these. All the dentists and hygienists at the White Dental Company will be pleased to advise. Regular dental check-ups and visits to the practice hygienist will help detect, monitor and reduce potential problems. The hygienist’s job is to remove plaque and this will help to lessen the incidence of dental decay. If very little plaque is present, the amount of acid formed is insignificant and the likelihood of decay is significantly reduced. If your teeth are in trouble, fear not as all is not lost. Far from it. A good professional practice, and The White Dental Company is just such a place, can help you with all your dental requirements. For patients who require replacement teeth, dental implants can be fitted in one day and there is a variety of techniques to minimise any discomfort and to ensure you are comfortable during and after the procedure. If your problem is a smile that is less than brilliant, or you are not happy with the state of your teeth and gums, using minimally invasive techniques the White Dental team will give a you smile that you will be proud of - and teeth that will last you a lifetime! Ideally you should visit the hygienist and have a check-up every six months. Discuss a regular plan with your dentist and once it is in place, put it in your diary in pen and stick to it. Unless, of course, you like semolina…

DR. ARIEL HAUS Has Solutions To Restore Your Body This Summer
D
r Ariel Haus is an expert using Carboxytherapy and has used this procedure in his Brazilian clinic for over 10 years. In the UK Dr Haus has just unveiled treatments using Carboxytherapy specifically targeting Stretch Marks. Dr Haus’ Harley Street clinic already offers Carboxytherapy treatments combating dark under eye bags and these have proved very popular. Carboxytherapy involves the injection of a small amount of carbon dioxide gas just beneath the skin’s surface and it delivers results by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Carbon dioxide is produced by the body naturally, and should not be confused with the potentially fatal carbon monoxide. Carboxytherapy is a popular choice for the treatment of stretch marks on the stomach and legs. Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or weight gain (e.g. pregnancy or rapid gain of fat). Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with pregnancy. A minimally-invasive treatment that is virtually painless, it can be done in around 5 minutes. Following treatment the skin texture will improve. Between 6-12 Carboxytherapy treatments are usually required for stretch marks, all spaced one week apart. This is a treatment that is suitable for all skin types and involves no downtime following the treatment. Carboxytherapy dates back to the 1930s and by using this additional carbon dioxide the body recovers from poor blood flow and in turn the body reacts by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Another great summer bikini season solution is VelaShape. VelaShape II combines gentle light and radio frequency energies (elōs™) with mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to manipulate the

The heat from the light and RF energies increases metabolism of this fatty layer and shrinks the size of fat cells. The mechanical rollers and vacuum suction act on the blood vessels to increase circulation to the local area,
as well as massaging the skin to achieve a smoother, less dimpled surface appearance. elaShape II offers a gradual improvement of cellulite in treated areas, firmer and tighter skin surfaces are also reported. 4-6 sessions are initially recommended over the space of just over a week. Maintenance treatments are done once a month. Treatment is safe and effective. Dr Ariel Haus is registered as a medical practitioner in Brazil, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The specific non-invasive cosmetic treatments that Dr. Haus offers are: • Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and also to rejuvenate the skin • Treatments to address wrinkles and frown lines • Dermal fillers (bioplasty and Restylane SUBQ) to smooth out deeper wrinkles and lines • Skin treatments, rejuvenation and hair removal using eMax laser • Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with Velashape, the latest technology to achieve non-surgical liposuction. In addition to his private clinic in Harley Street, London, Dr. Haus also works in the NHS and by arrangement is also able to see patients in Rio de Janeiro. Dr Ariel Haus only uses non-invasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States.

‘I’ve never been to a nursery like this before!’ Tucked away on Woburn Hill, opposite St George’s College near Weybridge, you will find the jewel in the crown of Surrey`s horticultural industry. From the outside you look down the long entrance driveway lined with specimen trees and wonder what is inside. Once you have parked and walk through the nursery entrance gates, you enter a world of horticultural inspiration, where the range and quality of plants makes you wonder why you have never previously visited.
‘Where did you find this range of plants?’ We are passionate about everything we do at The Plantation and one thing you will notice immediately is the scale and size of plants on offer compared to a regular garden centre. As keen plantsmen we take pleasure in personally selecting plants from the best growers from all over Europe.
‘I need screening, I am not able to have a solid fence on my boundary and I have a large gap to fill’ With continual building development in the local area we find that our customers frequently ask for high screening and, quite understandably, they don’t want to wait 20 years for the plants to grow. Through our long term production plan we can provide plants of all sizes, small and large. High hedges are another frequent request and again we can provide a wide range of plants, small and large, to suit all requirements, all locations, and all budgets. ‘What else do I need to do the planting?’ From composts, bark mulch and fertilisers to professional tools, tree stakes and wheelbarrows, we have everything you need to undertake your project, including some specialist items not available elsewhere. In addition, our Gavin Jones Garden
Machinery Shop offers a range of high quality garden machinery including major brands such as Stihl , Hayter , Alko , Mitox and Viking. Staffed by qualified and experienced fitters, we offer advice, demonstrations, equipment and spare parts as well as servicing and repairs for most types of garden machinery.
‘How do I get this home and plant it?’ Here at the Plantation we offer a variety of delivery options. We can wrap and pack plants into your own vehicle, deliver them in our delivery van, or for larger trees, deliver them on our lorry, complete with mounted crane. If you feel the plants are too large for you to handle, we also offer a planting service. We will visit your garden, assess the planting area, and then arrange for an all-in service, all backed up with a 12 month guarantee.
nursery, enabling you to relax with your refreshments in the middle of the beautiful surroundings.
‘I need some help please’ Here at The Plantation we pride ourselves on the high standard of our customer service; we understand the benefits of helping our clients to make an informed decision so our friendly qualified staff are always on hand to guide you through your purchase. Alternatively, if it’s a complete design and build project that you’re after, our experienced award-winning team can offer the full range of design and landscaping services.
‘What makes The Plantation special?’ The Plantation may offer spectacular plants in an inspirational setting but what makes it so special is its staff and the organisation behind them. The Plantation, as part of the ‘Fancy a coffee?’ successful Gavin Jones Group, has Choosing plants can be thirsty work achieved Investors in People Gold so why not visit the Plantation Coffee Standard, recently won the Toast of House serving Starbucks coffee? The Plantation, based near Weybridge in Surrey, is a source of inspiration for all visitors whether keen horticulturalists or novice gardeners. At the Plantation we pride ourselves in displaying our plants in a creative and informative way, and visitors are often amazed at the range of varieties and sizes we offer. In addition to our creatively displayed nursery we also offer design and landscaping services ranging from planting of single trees through to complete garden design and construction, all done by our award winning design and landscaping department.

CLIMBING PLANTS AND WALL SHRUBS ARE OFTEN FORGOTTEN ABOUT OR ADDED INTO A PLANTING SCHEME LATE IN THE DAY, ALMOST AN AFTER THOUGHT. THIS CAN BE A MISTAKE, AS THEY PROVIDE A VALUABLE ADDITION TO MOST GARDENS, SMALL OR LARGE. Climbers can completely transform the garden atmosphere by softening hard features, as well as providing shade and cooling from the sun, or privacy from peering eyes. When used in conjunction with trellis or fencing, climbers can also provide the garden with room dividers, particularly useful in smaller gardens where they tend to occupy less space than many hedges. Use in conjunction with 88 JUNE2012

Before going further I should stop a moment and explain what I mean by a climbing plant or wall shrub, as this is something which often confuses people. Climbers as the name suggests are plants which on the whole will climb up walls or other surfaces provided they are given support, such as with vine
eyes and wires. A few are self supporting eg hedera (ivy), but even these benefit from some additional support to speed up the elongation growth, as well as ensuring the growth is spread out to clothe surfaces quickly. Most require regular tying in to achieve the maximum benefit. Wall shrubs are tall growing shrubs which benefit from being grown against a surface to allow weak growth to be
tied in and trained, otherwise they will usually produce open spreading shrubs if grown in the open. A few also benefit from the reflected light and heat that they can receive from surfaces such as walls. At this time of year we can be spoilt by the numerous flowering climbers, such as clematis and wisteria. With a bit of planning a large wall could soon be

Over the winter months climbers such as ivy come into their own, the green or variegated leaves, depending on variety, providing a welcome but reliable backdrop to gardens which are often devoid of much greenery. When choosing climbers you should bear in mind that they can take several seasons to effectively start covering a wall or pergola, hence the use of specimen plants can make the difference for those who are a little impatient for results.

Chestnut Lodge is an exceptional Grade II listed property and is tucked away behind wrought iron gates boasting immaculately landscaped gardens and grounds, beautifully manicured lawns, topiary and wonderful ancient wisteria. unrivalled private collection of birds and animals. The owners built up an impressive stock over many decades of rare and unusual bird species, believed to be the biggest private collection of exotic birds in the UK. The property enjoys over 7000 square feet of accommodation arranged over 3 floors and is linked via a curved archway to a 2 bedroom 2 storey annexe which would make an ideal staff/annexe accommodation. There are various outbuildings as well as a detached 3 bedroom lodge house with its own private garden. The main house enjoys a host of classical period features including elegant high ceilings with decorative cornicing, open fireplaces and tall
Georgian windows, offering superb views over the parkland grounds. A particular and rare feature of the house is the grand ‘concert room’ with its bespoke acoustic ceiling and a spectacular full height fireplace and chimney breast. This magnificent Georgian country house lends itself to some significant improvements and updating and could also make a fabulous residential home or company headquarters, subject to the necessary planning consents. Whilst giving the feeling of being completely hidden away and private, Cobham Village is less than 1 mile and is well positioned for the A3 and the M25. The area is renowned for its excellent local
schooling such as Notre Dame and the ACS International School. Chestnut Lodge is an extraordinary opportunity and really must be viewed to be appreciated. Guide Price £1,950,000

KNOTT PARK HOUSE K
nott Park House is a Victorian manor house, built in 1885 for the Bryant family, founder of the Bryant and May Match Company. It was a revolutionary build at this time as it was one of the very few country homes with electricity. In the early 20th century Sir Robert McAlphine, who was made a baronet for services in the First World War, bought Knott Park House as his primary residence as a reflection of his new position and wealth. Sir Robert modernised the property extending it further adding a new dining room, kitchen, garages and stables. He also invested in landscaping the gardens capitalising on the magnificent views over the Surrey Hills. In 1948 the estate was divided into three sections. Further alterations have been made turning it into five separate homes retaining a number of original features including high panelled ceilings,
