Most of us know the significance of the English Heritage Blue Plaque: essentially a building has a blue plaque to highlight a famous (or infamous) resident. However various other local historical societies are now erecting their own plaques and for many different reasons – Michelle Harris looks into the wonderful history of these very well know Blue Plaques. Dream Makeover Essex, the fabulous free competition giving away top-to-toe makeovers worth £100,000 began last October. e winners were chosen in December and treatments began soon after. DME was open to men and women aged 20 to 65 and offered the chance to win a dream makeover worth up to £25,000 for each of the winners. e event is sponsored by Philips, leaders in the field of oral healthcare, and six local companies have come together to provide fabulous non-invasive treatments for our hand-picked winners. All have interesting stories and deserved to benefit from a dream makeover. Let’s find out more about them and the DME journey as they enter the final stages of the competition and the Reveal Event later this month hosted by TV’s popular presenter Jeff Brazier. e annual and celebrated, Essex Book Festival is always eagerly anticipated and a great forum for writers. Saturday 16 Mar 2013, Sat 20 Apr A TRIPLE BILL OF PLAYS BY MAMET, STOPPARD & GREENING A Triple Bill of contrasting plays to provoke, amuse and entertain. “e Book Club of Little Witterington” by Joan Greening is a gentle comedy about friendship, pretensions, books, vicars and cake. In Tom Stoppard’s “A Separate Peace”, when John Brown checks into a
private hospital, the doctors are confused: he freely admits that there is nothing wrong with him. But it's only a matter of time before he gives too much away and is forced to confront the past. David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross” is set in 1980s Chicago where four real estate agents are engaged in a desperate contest to win a Cadillac or a set of steak knives - or be fired. With so much at stake, not everyone is prepared to play by the rules. Note: this play contains very strong language throughout. INTERESTING FACTS… BEHIND THE BLUE PLAQUES WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
M
ost of us know the significance of the English Heritage Blue Plaque: essentially a building has a blue plaque to highlight a famous (or infamous) resident. However various other local historical societies are now erecting their own plaques and for many different reasons:
e Ilford Historical Society has erected five plaques to celebrate the 1951, Festival of Britain: l Ilford Hospital Chapel – to celebrate the building. l Valentines Mansion – Celebrating the vine planted in 1708. A cutting was taken for Hampton Court. l Methodist Church Hall, Ilford. is plaque celebrates the discovery of a pre-historic mammoth skull. I recently saw the exhibition in the Natural History Museum entitled: e Redbridge Mammoth! (Not a local voluptuous lady!) l Fairlop Oak pub in Barkingside High Street. A massive 1,000 year old tree, which had a trunk circumference of 36 feet. Originally part of Epping Forest, sadly the tree burnt down in 1820. e plaque celebrates this monumental tree and is also the origin of the pub’s name: Fairlop Oak. is tree was also significant in the 1700s for a scene of revelry during the Victorian era. Every first Friday in July (which led to a weekend event), Daniel Day (now buried in Barking Abbey churchyard) would go to Fairlop to collect his rents. e residents would then hold a picnic of bacon and beans, under the tree – which further led to the term ‘beanfeast’. l As most of our areas (except Brentwood) are covered by the Central line, if interested to go only slightly out of our zones to Newbury Park, there is a blue plaque over the passenger entrance arch. Unfortunately same of the plaques have been stolen so don’t be too disappointed if by the time you read this feature, and go blue plaque trekking, that it’s not there. e Loughton Historical Society also have been erecting their own blue plaques. Chris Pond, chairman of the Loughton Historical Society paid £175 out of his own pocket to set up the first plaque on behalf of the society for Reverend Robert Hunter. Mr. Pond currently lives in the property in Staples Road where Reverend Hunter resided from 1823-1897.

Some of the blue plaques erected by the English Heritage in Woodford Green: l Labour Prime Minister Clement Attlee (1883-1976) l James Hilton (1900-1954) – author of Goodbye Mr. Chips irty-four blue plaques have also been erected by Loughton Town Council in the last fifteen years. ere are also plaques for: l Gladys Mills (1918-1978) – pianist Mrs. Mills. l Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) – 20th century sculptor. Chairman of Ilford Historical Society, Jef Page commented: “History has always been very important to me and is more than just an interest. Promoting it to others and publicising its enjoyment to everyone through talks or at events such as guided tours or the Redbridge Mayfair is very important. “Ilford Historical Society has developed a new website to provide information and answer questions, gets involved in local conservation issues and doing the research and revealing the past adds to everyone’s quality of life.” For more details about the Loughton Historical Society and Ilford Historical Society, please see their websites: www.loughtonhistoricalsociety.org.uk Chairman: Dr. Chris Pond, OBE ilfordhistoricalsociety.weebly.com Chairman and programme secretary: Jef Page n

GUMBALLS, BAFTAS, EMMYS AND BUCKHURST HILL WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
O
ur local BAFTA* and Emmy* award winning children’s writer, James Lamont recently attended Daiglen School as part of a school initiative to help young, aspiring writers to channel their creative energy and imagination. Together with other local scribes, they supported the school’s Writers’ Week from 25th February – 1st March. Highlights included How to Write a Children’s Animation, English literature, some talks about dyslexia ( James Lamont is a dyslexic) and how to overcome hurdles, if aspiring to become a successful writer. James outlined all the opportunities available and reasons WHY, it’s great to be a writer. Other writers involved in the event were Pauline Stewart (poet from Ilford) and K. A. S. Quinn (children's historical novelist). Enthusiastic and excited about the profession, James briefly outlined all the various mediums available to writers of a certain calibre, what everybody is reading. Whether paperback/hardback books, via Kindle, internet, blogs, tweets, or the incredible opportunities to write for the thousands of TV channels that most of us have on subscription. James passed around the BAFTA trophies as each pupil had an opportunity to hold this pinnacle of creative awards. Only ever seen in the press or held by the A-list of Hollywood celebrities, the trophies certainly added golden sunshine glory to the week and especially in Buckhurst Hill. Having settled down, the mood became more studious as pupils then approached the task of understanding what it takes to win a BAFTA. So by necessity, they watched a few episodes of e Amazing World of Gumball… “Writing should not be considered a distraction from academic studies. Writing is a respectable profession and nobody should be afraid to pursue their creative dreams.” James Lamont
JAMES LAMONT WITH THE PUPILS OF DAIGLEN SCHOOL.
THE UFO SPACECRAFT BEING EXAMINED BY A FORENSIC CSI EXPERT
e children split up into various age groups then participated in a range of workshops where they learnt how to write their own Gumball episode; the construction of an animation within a three act structure. As most of the children were already fans, they knew the characters and had fun adapting them to their own storyline and agenda. In addition, the children enjoyed the Stock Animation programme and were guided through the animation process by Holly Lamont ( James’s wife) who is a teacher at the school. e school was vibrant with activity and certainly James Lamont’s participation was exciting and interesting. However and by coincidence, the following day, an alien spacecraft landed in the school playground! Fortunately a witness saw the spacecraft crash and luckily (!) a forensic CSI expert was also to hand and answered the children’s questions… As the children had just been trained in reporting techniques, they were able to maintain the flow of the week’s educational and creative process and prepared editorials of the event; what they witnessed and a vivid description of the spacecraft. e headmistress addressed the school to warn that they probably wouldn’t see an alien… however headmistresses can sometimes be wrong! An alien (who by coincidence looked like one of the teachers), was spotted, secretly sneaking out of the building… Ummmm… * 2013 International Emmy Kids Award Winner. THE DREAM CONTINUES
CAROLINE ENJOYS A MANICURE
D
ream Makeover Essex, the fabulous free competition giving away top-to-toe makeovers worth £100,000 began last October. e winners were chosen in December and treatments began soon after. DME was open to men and women aged 20 to 65 and offered the chance to win a dream makeover worth up to £25,000 for each of the winners. e event is sponsored by Philips, leaders in the field of oral healthcare, and six local companies have come together to provide fabulous non invasive treatments for our hand picked winners. All have interesting stories and deserved to benefit from a dream makeover. Let’s find out more about them and the DME journey as they enter the final stages of the competition and the Reveal Event later this month hosted by TV’s popular presenter Jeff Brazier. Keith, aged 54, hails from Loughton and won his place in the competition by virtue of his 15 year old daughter Emily who entered him. Keith could have been described as weighed down after redundancy, deaths in the family, divorce and the challenges of family life but as soon as the treatments kicked in Keith started to feel like a new man. Following simple laser treatment on his eyes by Mr Pillai from Advanced Vision Care, Keith was able to throw away his glasses and for the first time in many years see himself properly in the mirror. Keith’s dental problems were challenging for Ash Parmar from Smile Design by Ash but sessions with the hygienist and support with his dental hygiene care, teeth whitening, cosmetic contouring and giving up smoking have all played their part in improving his 14

smile and his self esteem. Since then Keith has visited Frances Furlong at Perfect Skin and her special skin enhancement Jeff Brazier procedures including skin needling have worked miracles on his wrinkles and lines together with muscle relaxing injections around the eyes. At MODE Beauty Salon in Loughton Karen Drew and her team waxed Keith’s eyebrows and he experienced his first manicure and deep tissue massage. He then visited award winning hair salon Zoology, also in Loughton and Mark Mountney Company Director of Zoology Salon Group who will is planning a perfect and distinguished look for him. Add to this some challenging workouts and training to improve fitness and healthy eating from Lisa Broughton from Body Perfect and Keith is almost ready to face the public once Aneliese Deane, Style Director, has provided clothes advice and taken him shopping. Eleasha, aged 25, lives in Chatham, Kent with her family and is still thrilled to be singled out as a winner. Her problem brown front teeth and poor smile had made her depressed for years but following subtle cosmetic contouring and a smile makeover with porcelain veneers she can’t stop smiling now. e big black glasses have gone along with her very poor vision as she couldn’t even see the top letter of the reading chart. Following wavefront intralase (blade-free) Lasik technique on both

eyes she now has 20-20 vision. Skin peeler to help control mild acne, skin needling to improve scaring, restylane fillers to plump lips for her new smile and muscle relaxing injections to her frown and forehead lines are just some of the skin treatments Eleasha has experienced. Pampering, massages, gel nails, lazer hair removal and tanning have all contributed to Eleasha’s new belief in herself. Although she couldn’t walk the next day following a training workout, Eleasha feels much healthier and slowly a new woman will emerge with a new hairstyle and colour, together with new clothes and all will be ready for the Reveal Event. Caroline, aged 44, lives in the Docklands. is Irish Mum of two felt dowdy and being a stay at home Mum had meant any thoughts she had about her own looks and how she felt about herself had gone on hold. Now that miniature tailor made lenses have been inserted in her eyes, known as Implantable Contact Lens, Caroline can now read all she wants without needing any help. A poor smile which she rated 3 out of 10 has been replaced with a Mini Smile Makeover which included cosmetic contouring, teeth whitening, crowns, veneers and white fillings. Skin treatments included volumising filler for lips, dermal filler for nose to mouth lines, skin needling, a selection of creams from the Suisse Absolue range, muscle relaxing injections below the eyes and intense pulse light treatments have also meant that Caroline’s problems with patches of red skin (Rosacea) have disappeared. Working out and a healthy diet are paying off and a new hairstyle and colour together with designer clothes will complete her look.
MARK CHECKS COLOURS WITH ELEASHA
Philips has given all the winners their own top of the range Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush, Airfloss cleaning machine and Zoom tooth whitening treatment so they can keep up the good work at home. e winners are being filmed during their Dream Makeover Essex journey as their life changing stories unfold. eir transformations are best summed up by hair stylist Mark and fashion guru Aneliese who are looking to make Caroline a yummy Mummy, Eleasha foxy and glamorous and give Keith a George Clooney look. Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET THE NEWS OF OUR METAMORPHOSIS HAS BEEN GREATLY EXAGGERATED Despite the elaborate past announcements made both in this magazine and other press releases, I must now inform you all, that the plans made by Churchill estates to amalgamate my estate agency with theirs have not materialised. So unless anyone else has the bright idea of making me an offer that I cannot refuse, both I and my trusty team will forge onward and upward continuing to supply the same quality service to buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants within the verdant areas of Chigwell and its environs as we have done for the past 47 years. NEW HOMES AT PHILLIP LEIGH You may remember that I recently took time to draw your attention to one of the areas planned new developments of luxury apartments built on the site of e Bald Hind Public House on Manor Road Chigwell. Well I am delighted to announce that Bob Weston’s Weston Homes have decided to retain us as their exclusive selling Agent. Now entitled Silverhind Court and just midway through development, it is clear that this gem of a project is proving highly popular. e building includes great style and panache, and the spacious apartments benefit from exquisite levels of 21st century design, materials and equipment with enviable bespoke detailing maximising

space and light. Weston Homes have a fine reputation for quality and after sales service with years of experience in residential development. Current sales nationwide have now reached 500 units per year throughout London and counties. I am
confident that once this great development is finished people will be fighting to get in. It happened that way when we sold out Claremont Place in ’03, e Atrium in ’05 and Eton Heights last year, and I wager a pound to a penny Silverhind Court will follow suite. My advice is don’t wait until then reserve your apartment now. THE LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET Both the sales and letting market are very static in regard to new listings. e sales market suffering the most, with the same stock sitting on the shelves with little change
other than the odd price reduction. I am hearing the same storey from prospective buyers saying that they are becoming extremely despondent and have virtually given up searching the usual websites. e deals we have put together after tough negotiations and a sensible recognition by those selling that they must agree concessions when genuine “ready to move” buyers make realistic offers. You still need to move quickly if you are looking to rent however, with the few new properties entering the market, finding tenants within the first few days of marketing. Good news this week should you need to borrow an excess of one million pounds. Several lenders have re entered the market at this level and are offering reasonable deals. However don’t get too excited unless you have the utmost straightforward income streams. Anyone without cast iron guaranteed earnings are still being turned away.

DANCE WORKSHOP
TALITHA ARTS is time last year Cathy added a massive new challenge to her already busy life when she found herself propelled towards the Project Talitha Arts. Cathy signed up to a trip to India’s Mumbai and Kolkata for three weeks to work with teenage girls who have been trafficked and physically abused and rescued into care homes. It’s a huge problem and in India involves 1.2 million children in the sex trade. Talitha Arts is the vision of actress friend Amanda Root who founded the group in 2011, having long held a passion for the restorative power of the arts. It’s a unique non-profit making group consisting of professional artists and arts therapists passionate about the potential to restore hope, dignity and worth through the freedom of the creative arts. e project delivers arts and therapy workshops to help the girls deal with their acute trauma and is supported by the International Justice Mission. “I knew I just had to do it” said Cathy. “I can’t think of anything with greater purpose and the right thing for me to be doing. I was overjoyed and privileged to go and I came back changed and a different person but enriched.” “ese girls, many of them aged 12 and even younger, have been forced and beaten into prostitution and can’t get away. ank God the International Justice Mission is working hard to relieve their plight but when they are rescued they can’t go back to their families as they would be shunned. ey are offered a specialist home where they receive practical help and support to regain quality of life.”
themselves and it’s our job to try and reach them through expressive and creative activities. In turn we work alongside a translator helping us communicate with the girls and we encourage them to sing in their own language as part of music therapy. ey take part in structured creative activities that engage the imagination and encourage freedom and self-discovery. It’s all designed to help them find a unique cultural identity and enable a healing process.” In this way communities are being built. e girls are encouraged to bond with each other and are ultimately helped to find work. is might be in a bakery or working with recycled sari materials to make bags and clothes. Cathy talks of Latifa, now aged 18, who she first met last year in Mumbai. “Latifa was very quiet and shy and had been through some terrible experiences. I met her again, this time in Calcutta, at a work project I just happened to visit. She remembered me and gave me the greatest hug. Latifa had been there for three months training in quilting and now has great work prospects. I could see she was standing taller and feeling stronger. It gave me so much pleasure to know that we had been part of her transformation.” Such is the success of this approach the International Justice Mission want more sessions which means finding focused and committed individuals prepared to take it on. Plus, of course, there is much needed funding. All those involved on the trips have to be self funded and Amanda Root recently organised bucket collections at a West End theatre.
ANOTHER TRIP In January this year Cathy made her second trip to India. is time they doubled in size and Cathy lead a small team, working alongside others, to train after care workers and councillors to continue this vital work with rescued girls. “eir trauma is so acute that they have withdrawn into

riday morning at 7.15 a.m. and focussed business people are already making their way to a networking meeting. e smell of hot coffee awakens the nostrils and senses, the sound of tinkering cups and saucers, warm fresh pastries are passed around, plus chilled fresh fruit juices for those needing cold refreshment. A room full of people are engaged in conversation; catching up on their week with friends or discussing business opportunities. e group are an interesting combination of professional networkers: a web designer, letting and insurance agents, car mechanic, PR executive, solicitor, accountant, photographer, owner of a care home, graphic designer, dentist, builder plus many other professionals and tradesmen… ey’re all busy – but congregated for a purpose – predominantly to help each other. “CBG are a group of professional and trades personnel who meet on a regular basis to network and support each other’s businesses. In addition, we regularly review important causes then make charitable donations…”
Carl Belle – Chair of Chigwell Business Group
Like most business groups, there is a structure to the meeting, an arrival time for everybody to hear each other’s 60-seconds and particular business referrals required or needed for that week; subsequent exchange of multiple referrals and the 10-minute slot. Sometimes members will discuss their business, or on other occasions, worthwhile interests or causes that they would like to share with the group. Last week, Ash Parmar of Smile Design by Ash wanted to discuss his preferred charity, Food For Life Vrindavan (FFLV). e charity is a humanitarian association, officially recognised by the Indian Government. 24

Food For Life Vrindavan offers: l Food distribution l Basic medical assistance l Training courses for women l Drilling for drinking water and constructing water tanks l Assistance for the elderly and disabled l Distribution of clothes l Environmental projects and education l Taking care of cows l Providing primary school education for disadvantaged children As part of the talk, the group saw photographs of children from the poorest areas; some live without water, electricity or even facilities for basic human hygiene. However the charity's aspiration is to help as many locals as financially possible, so they should have hope, food and education. “…Recently, we helped a special needs school in Loughton and in the past, have donated to Haven House, the children’s hospice. ” “ Who Can You Trust?… WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS With all the jokes about horsemeat, my favourite is: Did you hear about the man who ordered a burger? He said: “I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse!” It’s not really funny and I think most of us are disgusted at the thought of eating meat, labelled as beef, which in reality was probably horsemeat. Buying any food from a reputable source such as Tesco should be absolutely trusted. What else are we eating that has erroneously been assumed as safe or as packaged? So who can you trust? As ongoing stories detail problems with banks, excessive bonuses enjoyed by the fat cats, I honestly feel, I can trust NatWest and am pleased to share my story. Received a call last week from somebody allegedly from the Fraud Prevention Department at NatWest. You know those calls, when they want to ensure they are speaking to the right person and then interrogate you about your personal details. My standard response is: “I know who I am! But who are you? You called me!” and if I turn the tables and ask my date of birth, postcode, they protest Data Protection. So I generally call back, using a number from the back of a card or via their website. I assumed it was a hoax but it wasn’t! My card had been compromised and the bank were urgently calling to advise stopping the card and to check recent purchases. So despite covering my hand when entering the pin; never giving my card to anybody
then watching it disappear behind a counter; checking cash machines for any hint of recording device and all those other precautions, somebody, somewhere, had picked up that my details, were with a fraudster. It all looks so innocent, a piece of plastic, a four numbered pin; but outside of our control is very scary and the banks have red hot security. ank You NatWest. Mazda. Some people are car people some people are not. I am (or rather was!) the latter. e old cliché of getting you from A to B. Reliable, etc. etc. and my ‘reliable’ Citroen Picasso did the job for 13 years and I was happy. We would rattle down the road, we knew each other well and were comfortable. But on one particularly cold day, the car took eight turns of the key before that reassuring click which heralded the start of the engine. So I reluctantly embarked upon the circuit: Audi, BMW, Vauxhall, Ford, Citroen, all the garages, all the colours, all the specifications but nothing impressed. My criteria was simple: good sound system (preferably Bose), six speakers, SatNav, Bluetooth. Would be great if the car looked executive but with a hint of sporty sexiness (am going through a mid-life crisis) only the Mazda 6 had everything I wanted as standard. So I booked a test drive... …Life immediately changed: Zoom Zoom. Wow what a treat. Gliding down the road and with SatNav so I do not get lost. Arriving and departing in style. What car did I use to drive??? My love affair with my new car overwhelmed any other past
Michelle Harris driving experience. But then the SatNav goes wrong. In despair, distraught, despondent, desperate I called the dealer – Mazda in Romford. My call quickly returned and an immediate booking for the next morning as a priority. Greeted with a smile, I’m recognised from the original agreement. ey remembered how much I loved the car. It’s always good to be remembered; stops you feeling like one of a million customers that are simply names on a form. An expert looks at the car, the SatNav problem is more complicated than originally thought, so a team of experts get involved and the problem is rectified. Am relaxed and happy again and now I ‘trust’ the after-sales team who will help me maintain my absolute satisfaction of the best drive, I have ever had. So who can we trust? e people who look after us (especially in business) after the event or from behind the scenes. Despite promises, slick marketing and carefully worded promises – it’s the actions that prove the point but also that we should share a good experience. To thank both formally and informally but preferably in writing... Romford Mazda, 299-307 Collier Row Lane, Romford, Essex, RM5 3ND. arly March is a key time for decision making for parents looking for schooling in September 2013, and the Oak-Tree Schools have been busy with Open Mornings, requests for tours, additional entrance exams and taster sessions over recent weeks. is has been evident at Normanhurst in North Chingford, Oaklands in Loughton and Epping’s Coopersale Hall. Parents commented in the recent surveys that there are many opportunities to talk to their Heads and Principal, with the Oak-Tree Schools clearly valuing the relationships with parents and acting on many of the practical suggestions for further development. Recent informal coffee mornings have enabled Headmistresses Kaye Lovejoy, Cheryl Macnair and Claire Osborn, together with Managing Principal Matthew Hagger, to chat and listen to the very people whose opinions count. is close working relationship is not easily replicated at larger schools. Matthew Hagger, Managing Principal of the Oak-Tree Group, commented “I am always pleasantly surprised by the number of parents who take the time out of their busy days to come and talk to us. We’ve met parents yeargroup by yeargroup and have been overwhelmed by how positive their experiences of our schools have been. Some have been with us for many years, others have recently joined. e vast majority have been delighted with our education and where suggestions have been made for further development, we’ve been able to make changes quickly. Our parents make financial sacrifices to ensure their children 32

get the best academic and all-round education at our schools and are always looking for opportunities to add to the service we provide. Coopersale Hall and Oaklands parents are very interested in the move to senior education at 11+ and are keen to hear our advice about which senior schools are most appropriate when the time comes. As impartial preparatory schools we advise them without bias. Normanhurst parents have been making sure that their children are ready for the start of the GCSE preparation and are very interested to hear what they can do to help at home. Parents of our younger children have been delighted with the excellent start to school in the Early Years, and are looking forward to their move into the Juniors.” e communication between home and school is very important to the Oak-Tree Schools. e ‘open door’ policy across the Group allows parents to make daily contact with their children’s keyworkers or teachers either in person before or after school, or by email. All three of the Oak-Tree Schools recognise that involving parents in their child’s education is fundamental to effective progress and academic achievement. Parents and families are at the heart of the education, and in these relatively small schools each family and child is known well. PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND The Pringle of Scotland Autumn/Winter 2013 collection offers a clean and structured silhouette, softened through the use of luxurious knits and a colour palette that builds from white, chalk, praline and caramel tones through to vivid cornflower and sea blue, with a 1960’s influence. The brand’s iconic argyle is presented in varying forms, from a more literal interpretation on a knitted dress with devore effect diamonds, to the subtle formation of pixelated prints, to the use of sharp angles that mimic the points of a diamond seen on the v neckline of a tuxedo jacket and in the rib hem detail of a cashmere knit. The twinset concept is developed through the matching of elements throughout looks; from the yarn on a knitted sweater that is mirrored in the knitted pocket panels of the trouser, to skirt and trouser suits that pair double weave fabrics, to the trimming of a knitted dress and cardigan with matching tubular knit piping. Pringle has been a favourite of the stars of stage and screen since the 1940s. in the 1950s, the original sweater girls: Jean Simmons, Margaret Lockwood, Deborah Kerr, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, and many more all wore Pringle. FASHION dresses with a silk binding with a patent shoe. Geranium, Bubblegum gold, Brown and Black Organza, Chiffon and Zibeline – The dress a soft trapeze, pailettes and beaded spirals. A colour hit. PAUL SMITH Packed with rich texture and vibrant colour combinations, Paul Smith’s autumn/winter 2013 women’s collection offers a contemporary twist on sartorial classics. The collection mixes hard and soft textures contrasting soft alpaca tweeds and lambskin with silk twill and layered organza. Dark, wintry shades collide with optimistic brights and a softened silhouette with harsh lines; relaxed shoulders contrast with tailored trousers and sharply cut collars and sleeves in outerwear. Geometric prints are subtly incorporated into fabrics, bonded onto felted wool and crisp cotton, and inject a signature Paul Smith twist into linings and soft accessories. Vivid accessories mix and match with bold separates, either complementing rich hues or clashing with right tailoring. The oversized portfolio clutch is a key accessory, available in an array of colours, asis the ‘Ziggy’ bag. The ‘Base’ holdall is reinvented this season in ‘Point’ fabric, designed by Paul in collaboration with textile designers Maharam. Key shoe styles include ‘Pepper’ court shoes with an elegant pointed toe, ‘Eta’ low-cut booties with ankle straps, ‘Waters’ elongated loafers and ‘Miles’ loafer ankle boots. MATTHEW WILLIAMSON This season, Matthew Williamson imagines a TOM FORD spirited English rose seeking adventures new. It’s an idea that best translates into a unique jacquard that sets a red rose against a rich tapestry, conceived entirely in-house and which often appears further enhanced with hand embroideries, creating an almost 3D effect. Opulent colour and print is informed by the Northern Lights. This spectacular light show is depicted as digitally printed snowscapes with acid green-lit skies, and also, as long shards of neon and iridescent sequins which land on full-length column sheaths. This concept of surprise illumination continues into sequined floor-skimming evening gowns, in degrade pewter, gunmetal and sulphur yellow. Silhouettes are refreshed and now fall away from the body in favour of trapeze and tunic designs with longer hemlines. Below-the-knee skirts are knife pleated and erupt into fluted shapes inspired by the traditional dress of Nordic natives, whose eclectic costumes also inform strings of mini pompoms and jewels adorning necklines of sweaters, blanket-style dresses and coats in hyper-coloured stripe and chevron. Waffle sweaters are knitted with rabbit fur, and elsewhere, wildly colourful fox and raccoon stoles add new verve to clean line tailoring and evening wear. Autumn/Winter 2013 also sees the debut of Matthew Williamson leather handbags, a capsule collection of roomy handheld totes, and smaller duffle styles in leather and jacquard boasting longer across-body chains. HOUSE OF HOLLAND ‘Nana Rave’ House of Holland harks back to the autumn of 1989, the end of the second summer of love and the acid house scene. A field full of “like minded people” a pocket full of “treats” and they’re all up at 9 to collect their state pension. 70s graphic interior prints, jewel coloured palettes of tonal ruby, emerald and sapphire, pops of neon appear in shearling trims and floor length zips. Crystal embellishments of club night indulgence all collide in this 70s – meets – 90s nostalgic homage. Silk fil coupé, printed and embellished wool crepes, printed stretch and patent leather, and maribou embellished grey marl all come together to create a rich layering of textures. VIVIENNE WESTWOOD RED LABEL This season the collection took inspiration from mythical nature. The collection began looking at feminine prints of delicate flora and wild fauna,
looking at patterns in nature, that then lead to studying gods of nature and Greek mythology, split into 3 main areas of inspiration: ‘Pan’- in Greek Mythology is the God of Wild, shepherds and flocks, nature, hunting and rustic music, and companion to the nymphs. ‘Pan’ is the more masculine part of the collection- with oversized, boxy, loose coats and minimal clean lines in jersey and knitwear. ‘Artemis’- is the great Olympian goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals and is also a goddess of the nymphs. Artemis is one of the patron gods of the mythical, warlike, bow-wielding Amazons. ‘Artemis’ is the pared down feminine part of the collection that offers rounded shoulders, fitted high waists, hiplines curving outwards creating a slight 40’s silhouette, soft curved lines in tailoring with contrasting voluminous and narrow silhouettes. ‘Selene’- is the moon goddess and Pan’s greatest conquest. He wooed her by wrapping himself in a sheepskin to hide his goat form and drew her down from the sky into the forest where he seduced her. ‘Selene’ is the most sensual part of the collection, offering cape details in coats, fluid draping in tops and dresses, short jackets and bolero styles in leather and sequins, and feminine voluminous knitwear. Vivienne Westwood’s press release presented at the show is in support of the Climate Revolution: The Revolution is already begun. The fact of man-made climate change is accepted by most people. Through every walk of life people are changing their values and their behaviour. The fight is no longer between the classes or between rich and poor but between the idiots and the eco-conscious. Climate Revolution is the only means towards a sound economy. When the general public massively switches on to this fact we will win. If we want a sound economy we have to have a sound environment. The rugged home of native Navajo Indians acted as a rich source of inspiration to Issa this season. From the bold geometric designs of woven blankets to wide brushstrokes mimicking the flow of the Colorado River, Issa delivers prints as diverse as the landscape from which they originate, experimenting with fabrics and textures rich in tradition, yet re-worked to deliver a thoroughly modern finish. Woven, monochrome feather jacquards feel warm and comfortable but fashioned into pleat front trousers, circle skirt dresses and fitted jackets they’re the epitome of understated chic. Our Fit & Flare jacquard dresses have been updated with a variety of contemporary prints from skeleton, monochrome designs to striking geometric, bright angles. Silk, in all its timeless indulgence, is part of Issa’s culture and has been expertly tapered into slim-fit, printed shirts and neatly fitted or flowing, wide leg trousers to effortlessly take you from day to evening. Alternatively, the Issa woman can waft through the heat of the day in breezy silk chiffon kaftans printed with majestic eagle feathers; embroidered with plumes and beaded fringe echoing the headdresses of warrior tribes as they fan out sumptuously across the neckline. As the light fades and evening sets in she slips into one of this season’s show-stopping, embroidered evening dresses. Ultra-glamorous shapes cut from heavy crepe de chine are adorned with cut mirror and crystals to ensure she glimmers alongside the camp fire. Gliding through the crowd in a long, languid dress cut to reveal an open back, seductively long sleeves or teasingly closed neck. These are dresses to guarantee you’ll have all eyes on you. JOHN ROCHA Continuing his exploration and love of colour from his Spring Summer collection, John Rocha finds inspiration in the winter bright landscapes of Wicklow and the palettes in the work of Gary Hume. As always with John’s work there is a duality – a balance between the tender and the strong. The palette, while grounded in all the textured tints of black, is bold and beautiful with meadow greens, olive and lime, candy and sugar pinks, coral, red and flame. The silhouette is crafted in rugged felts, autumn sparkled tweed, mohair, double jerseys, latex glazed lace and John’s signature silk georgettes and chiffons.
JULIEN MACDONALD Autumn Winter 2013 sees Julien Macdonald’s return to the catwalk to present a ready to wear collection displaying his signature styles, embodying Macdonald’s aesthetic of chic, modern glamour. Taking inspiration from the energetic, bright lights, casinos and graphic architectural aesthetic of Las Vegas, Macdonald fuses elegant style with elements of modern construction, tinged with a rock and roll edge for a fresh geometric feel. Focusing solely on dresses named after luxury Las Vegas hotels and iconic places, encompassing the high energy of the casinos, the collection showcases long, lean graphic silhouettes softened with feminine adornment as well as short dresses vibrant with Over-sized great coats envelope the body, falling from the shoulder or pops of colour. Luxe detailing and eccentric styling feature embedded collars. Figured dresses with cropped kimono sleeves translates into expertly placed feathers, Swarovski beads and graphic bell or skim the form. Throughout the collection surfaces are highlighted with flashes of colour such as poison green, while dangerous densely worked in tone on tone stitch work, looped felts, and cartwheels in reds, Ochre yellow and burnt orange imitate the saturated colours of hand crochet mohair, and flurries of wonderful blossoms lend an almost a desert sunset, contrasting with shimmering metallics reflective of couture sensibility. Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR patient cannot clean these areas properly, then the best option may be surgical gum treatment. is is painless as it is done under local anaesthetic, and allows someone like me to clean all the disease around the roots much more effectively so that there is faster and better healing of the gums.
DO I HAVE GUM DISEASE? FOCUS ON HOW A GUM SPECIALIST (PERIODONTIST) CAN HELP I regularly see new patients at my practice who have been going to the dentist for many years and are unaware of the ongoing gum disease they have. is may be because they have not received the ideal advice or treatment, or have not been referred to a gum specialist. e end result is the loss of many teeth and the need to wear a denture or have more advanced treatment like dental implants. In this feature I would like to ask our gum specialist (periodontist) Sonia Joshi a few questions, so that LIFE magazine readers have a better understanding of this problem. AP: Sonia, we have been working together for many years. Could you please clarify what are the main causes of gum disease? SJ: Gum disease is often “silent”– there may not be any pain or obvious problems. is is why many people are not aware of this. e main cause of gum disease is the harmful bacteria within plaque that forms in all of our mouths. Plaque is a sticky film that accumulates on teeth and near the gum margins. If it is not cleaned properly, then it converts to hard tartar that makes the surfaces of teeth rougher, which in turn attracts more plaque. 42

PERIODONTITIS STAGES
BEFORE TREATMENT
AFTER TREATMENT
e other main causes of gum disease are genetic (some people are more predisposed to gum problems), smoking, and not having regular gum treatment with a hygienist and a periodontist (if the gum disease is more advanced). AP: What are the signs of gum problems that would alert a dentist to refer to a gum specialist like yourself? SJ: e first important thing for a person that has gum problems is to see a hygienist for basic gum treatment, which includes removal of the harmful plaque and tartar, and advice on ideal
oral hygiene techniques. is will often resolve many of the problems such as bleeding gums, bad breath and staining/discolouration of the teeth. Once the patient is motivated and educated, the gums will usually respond and become healthier. However, for many people this may not be enough and residual pockets remain around the necks of the teeth. It is at this point that the patient should be referred to a periodontist, as teeth will get looser if the advanced gum treatment is not done. AP: How does your treatment as a specialist differ to that offered by a hygienist? SJ: I can offer deep gum cleaning under local anaesthetic. Because I have a masters degree and advanced training on gum disease, I am better qualified to treat moderate to deep gum pockets (e.g. more than 5-6mm). I also offer special antibiotic and medicinal treatments to help deep gum pockets to heal better. If the pockets are deeper and the
AP: Finally, what does “maintenance” mean Sonia? SJ: After a patient has had a course of gum treatment for advanced gum problems, the periodontist will decide on a suitable maintenance programme. is may include regular visits to a hygienist or the periodontist e.g. every 3-4 months so that we can provide professional and regular gum cleaning beneath the gum levels where you cannot get to easily. e patient of course has a responsibility to clean thoroughly above the gum margins on a daily basis. It is really a partnership between the patient and the professionals to maintain healthy gums. BRUSH WITH AN EXPERT TO SEE LONDON FASHION WEEK THROUGH THE EYES OF A TOP MAKE-UP ARTIST, LISA HAYNES SNEAKS BACKSTAGE AMONGST THE POWDER AND PAINT
T
o see London Fashion Week through the eyes of a top make-up artist, Lisa Haynes sneaks backstage amongst the powder and paint When a model struts her way onto the catwalk, the clothes are only half the story. Backstage, she may have been in hair and make-up for two to three hours as the beauty teams preen, polish and perfect to create the image visualised by the designer. Val Garland is puppeteer of her make-up team, pulling the transformation strings. A top make-up artist for 27 years and with M.A.C Cosmetics since 1994, you may not have heard her name but you'll undoubtedly have seen her work - in magazines, on

television and at international fashion weeks. It's day three of London Fashion Week and Sunday is anything but a day of rest for Garland. She is the key artist at nine shows but today she is juggling ďŹ ve backstages in just one day. From late model arrivals to dealing with indecisive designers, we shadow her day. PREEN BY THORNTON BREGAZZI Some make-up artists work quietly and seriously. Not Val Garland. After going to bed at midnight and getting up at 4.30am, Garland is the life and soul of the backstage party at the 6am 'call-time' for Preen while others are still rubbing the sleep from their eyes.

MAKE-UP STATION BACKSTAGE
VIVIENNE WESTWOOD WITH MAKE-UP ARTIST VAL GARLAND
Her temporary backstage home is made obvious by her trademark 'Val Garland' branded tape marking out her area. She describes the look for Preen as "delicate punk", created using grey eyeshadow mixed with water to create a liquid liner, drawn in a sharp diagonal line on either the upper or lower lid. It's modern and graphic but there were a few variations before getting to the final runway look as the designer switches from one line, to top and bottom line, before reverting back to one line. "e only way you can decide on the make-up is when you see it on the runway, under the lights," says Garland. "I'm always there for pre-show rehearsal with the designer and stylist. We have a list of the models and I might say, 'She's too shiny' or 'I don't like that' or the designer says, 'I love that' and that's how it works." TEMPERLEY LONDON Time is tight between Preen's finale and Garland's 9.30am arrival for Temperley but luckily Val has a motorbike revving outside for her. "As the finale starts, I run outside, hop on the back of the bike and whizz to the next show," she says. "It's essential for getting to each backstage on time in traffic. "I love it because it's a moment of relaxation between shows, with the wind blowing in my hair as I take in the capital's sights." All of Val's immediate crew are miked up with headsets so there's no shouting between make-up stations. Just calm, orderly beautifying. e inspiration at Temperley is Hitchcock heroine Kim Novak, and it's all about the eye with a bold liner. Although it's a retro inspiration, Garland is adamant the eye shouldn't look too Fifties. Using one of her prized possessions, an artist's brush, she lines with fine precision using her statement glasses for close-ups. Garland dubs herself the 'Queen of Brushes' and estimates she has thousands in her total kit. Vivienne Westwood e midday atmosphere backstage at Vivienne Westwood is frantic and highly-charged. e face chart is like the blueprint for the final look and this one resembles a Jean Cocteau-inspired avant-garde painting. While some designers want to keep the focus entirely on the clothes, Vivienne Westwood's make-up is always a masterpiece in itself. Today's reference is 'Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour, shot by Helmut Newton'. e creative look is achieved using bright products like M.A.C's Pro Chromalines in red, yellow and cyan. "It's been a sea of grey and monochromes so far this season so it's great to see colour and have some fun," Garland enthuses. "I love working with Vivienne Westwood because as a make-up artist it's all about ideas and I can go in there and really open up the toybox, throw all the toys in the air and see what sticks!"
SUPER-SKIN BACKSTAGE
e show is due to start at 2pm and two late-running models sprint in at 2.05pm but Garland isn't fazed. Four hairdressers, two make-up artists and two nail artists on each model and they're ready in five minutes flat. MARY KATRANTZOU US Vogue editor Anna Wintour is on the front row so the pressure is on for "beautiful super-skin" that complements the clothes. e late-running Westwood show means Garland doesn't arrive until 3pm and it's a 4pm show but her proficient team has everything in hand and Garland greets the crowd of beauty press waiting to jot the show inspiration in their notepads, Tweet the looks and take videos of make-up artists in action. As well as overseeing the final make-up looks, Garland is story-teller of the designer's vision. "I deal with the press, ensuring journalists get what they need for the story and talk about the products we've used to create the look," she explains. "I've worked with M.A.C for so many years, they will make me a product if I need something specific." Katrantzou's busy designs are all about architecture and landscapes so Garland explains she's keeping the make-up very pure. ere's an intriguing 'ghostliness' to models' faces, created with a cellophane-look gloss on eyes and by highlighting bone structure to reflect under the high beam of the catwalk lights. MARIOS SCHWAB It's Garland's last show of the day and her energy hasn't waned in the slightest. e call-time is 5.30pm and she's flaunting a glossy manicure to beauty journalists that she's managed to squeeze in between shows. "We've got a bit of a skin eruption going at Fashion Week so we're bringing out the M.A.C Mineralize Concealer," Garland teases, referring to the models' skin that's already feeling the strain of Fashion Week. She pulls out an iPhone from her Celine bag of essentials to reveal a snapshot of a beautiful medieval woman, the inspiration for the show. "It's all about skin sculpture but in a much more modern way," she reveals. "It's medieval futurism!" e show time may be 8.30pm but it's running 40 minutes late and Garland never packs up her make-up kit until the finale when the models take their final catwalk. But the show isn't over for Garland. A quick recharge and then the action continues at Paris Fashion Week, but she shows no sign of backstage fatigue, saying: "I'm alongside make-up artists that have worked with me for years. ey know what the Val-ism is 'Give me your magic!'" NON SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION (IDD) THERAPY BY ROBERT SHANKS CO-FOUNDING DIRECTOR OF SPINE PLUS CLINICS WHAT IS IDD THERAPY? “Intervertebral Differential Dynamics” (IDD) erapy is a non-surgical treatment for people with damaged discs in their spine. e IDD machine uses advanced computer technology to precisely target, then gently and rhythmically distract specific segments of the spine. is creates a vacuum effect to decompress the damaged disc(s) which over a 6 to 8 week course of treatment can help reduce disc bulging, reduce pressure on pinched nerves causing back pain and sciatica and improve mobility of stiff ligaments and spinal joints. WHAT CONDITIONS ARE SUITABLE FOR IDD THERAPY? IDD is most suitable for patients who are suffering from chronic back pain, neck pain, sciatica or trapped nerves in the arms due to herniated or thinning discs in the spine. Very often these patients have tried but not responded to other forms of conservative treatment such as osteopathy, physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and injections and are looking for an alternative to surgery. ARE THERE ANY CONTRAINDICATIONS TO IDD THERAPY? ere can be contraindications to IDD erapy (such as severe osteoporosis, certain disc tears, spinal fracture etc) which is why it is important to have an initial assessment with an experienced IDD provider (such as Spine Plus Clinics) prior to embarking on a course of treatment. At Spine Plus this involves reviewing any MRI scan results and examining the function of your spine. SHOULD I ASK MY GP OR CONSULTANT WHETHER THEY WOULD RECOMMEND IDD THERAPY? Despite the fact that there are over 800 clinics world wide offering IDD, IDD has only been available in the UK since 2006. ere is a growing number of clinics offering this ground breaking treatment but currently there are only 9 clinics in the whole of the UK. Your GP or consultant is therefore unlikely to have experienced IDD or know very much about it. However a growing number of surgeons and consultants are now referring for IDD erapy and two of the nine UK clinics are actually located within (BMI) Hospitals, one of which includes Spine Plus’ West End IDD Clinic. HOW SUCCESSFUL IS IDD TREATMENT? Medical trials have shown IDD to have success rates of between 70 and 90% (even in patients who were candidates for spinal surgery). IDD is not necessarily right for everyone which again is why it is important to undergo a thorough assessment. If we think IDD is inappropriate for you we will recommend alternative options.

Large disc herniation in the lower back
Herniation resolved following IDD Treatment
REEHAN’S STORY 37 year old Reehan consulted Spine Plus after suffering with severe sciatica for over 12 months due to a large disc herniation, During that time he had tried numerous therapies including physiotherapy, chiropractic and podiatry unfortunately without any improvement in his symptoms. His GP then referred him to a spinal surgeon who administered an epidural and other spinal injections, this gave Reehan only three weeks relief from his crippling sciatica. When his sciatica returned it was worse then ever and he was unable to sit or walk for more than 10 minutes. His surgeon told Reehan the only next option was spinal surgery. Having heard about IDD erapy, Reehan then contacted Spine Plus to see if we could help. On reviewing Reehan and his MRI scan we constructed a tailor made treatment plan, this involved paraspinal (Trigger Point) dry needling, core strengthening exercises but the main focus was a course of IDD treatment. Despite having suffered for over a year without any improvement, following the IDD treatment Reehan’s reflexes and neural tension signs all returned to normal, his sciatica and back pain completely resolved and he was able to avoid spinal surgery. To view Reehan’s and other patient testimonials please search for Spine Plus on You Tube or see our IDD web video at www.spineplus.co.uk/iddtherapy. Spine Plus currently have six clinics in the London area including Chigwell, Waterloo and Harley Street. ey offer specialist treatment services for Back Pain, Neck Pain (and all other musculoskeletal disorders), including one of the latest therapies to the UK – IDD Computerised Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression erapy. Mode Beauty erapy is owned and run by Karen, who has been working in the beauty business for 30 years. Karen trained at Ware College, then worked at salons in London and St Albans, including Pamela Stephens. She also has a teaching diploma. A SMILE A CURVE THAT SETS EVERYTHING STRAIGHT WORDS BY DEE BROWN
S
enior Admin Supervisor and football fanatic Paul always wanted a straight, white smile. So when he found out about Smile Design by Ash, he jumped at the opportunity to correct his crooked teeth. As a friend of mine for a number of years, Paul knew he would be in safe hands. ‘A friendly face always reassures people. But after coming in for a consultation with Ash, it was clear it was a well organised practice, and I felt reassured that my treatment would work out how I wanted it to’. Paul was an irregular visitor to a dentist and only went when he had a problem; he had also never seen a hygienist. Like most people Paul was unaware of how important gum health was until he met Jessica for the first time! Like many teenagers, Paul opted not to have braces at a younger age. When visiting the practice for the first time Paul knew he had made the right choice. ‘I was very, very impressed by the practice to be honest. e facilities were second to none. It’s always a calm environment, which helps as some people feel nervous having treatment done and it’s always so welcoming when you walk through the door. Overall a 10 out of ten from me! Paul had an assessment with Ash and decided the most conservative way of correcting his crooked teeth was braces and as Paul only had mild crowding the best option was the Six Month Smiles brace. A fixed brace with tooth coloured brackets and wires taking on average a time of four to nine months. Paul visited Jyoti (our braces connoisseur!) once a month to have minor adjustments between his teeth to allow them to move into place. ‘In a way Jyoti and the team always made me feel a little special. HOUSE GARDEN
I
have often said that we should emulate the prudent wealthy people of Tudor times who invested their money in tangible things like land, property, decorative arts and items of intrinsic value such as gold and silver. e production of artefacts made of the latter was, by the middle of the 16th century, strictly controlled and as proof of this the Goldsmiths’ Company had instituted a system of marking all items so made which revealed with individual stamps on the surface the quality of the material, the identity of the maker, the place where it was tested and the officer in charge of the testing. As it was an annual office this mark changed each year and, taking its form as a letter of the alphabet, became known as the Letter of the Year Mark or more recently simply the ‘Date Letter’. Originally it was called the Assay Mark - from the French word assai meaning examination - introduced under a statute of 1478 wherein the Goldsmiths’ Company was made liable to a fine if it marked any substandard silver. (A point here is that in this context the term goldsmith applies to silversmiths as well.) In 1545 the fourth mark was added, depicting a lion walking to the left with its right paw raised and known as the Lion Passant. It became known as the Sterling Mark as it took the place of the earlier King’s Mark to denote quality while the latter became recognised as the mark of the London Goldsmiths’ Company and Assay Office. e reason for the change was two-fold. Firstly by the mid 1500’s the coinage had become debased by approximately 50% which meant that a silver crown (5 shillings) had only half a crown’s worth of silver content. To prove the maintained sterling value and quality of wrought plate, that is items made of silver, the Lion Passant mark was introduced. Secondly, by this time and starting as early as 1378, Assay Offices had been established in various parts of the country, particularly at York, Newcastle, Lincoln, Norwich, Bristol, Salisbury and Coventry. While it was imperative that all

silver should be guaranteed to be of the sterling standard and marked as such it was impractical to expect silversmiths from these disparate places to travel to London to have their wares marked and so each adopted a different emblem to equate with the Leopard’s Head of London. All these towns and cities used a letter of the alphabet to identify the Assay Master but they did not all use the same sequence of letters. London used the first twenty letters in the alphabet excluding ‘J’ and when the run was exhausted the typeface or the shape of the background ‘shield’ was changed. In 1560 Queen Elizabeth I restored the value of the coin, a move which set Britain on a steady course to recovery for the best part of 100 years only to be decimated by our civil war (1642 – 1649.) Among the results of this were vast amounts of earlier wrought plate being melted down to pay for it, which in turn caused a shortage of silver for manufacture. Over time this affected the monetary supply to such an extent that by the 1690’s further legislation was necessary. Until the reign of Charles II all our coinage was made by hand, stamped by hammer and die and the edges trimmed with shears. Although trade was often conducted through barter or credit, cash transactions were
common enough and so, before parting with your coins it was only human nature to snip a little bit of the edge of each one. ese little snippets all mounted up - the original ‘every little counts’ – but it had already become a capital offence to clip coins and, with a fake die, forge your own money. However with an increased demand from working silversmiths these scraps could command as high a price as the coins they had been cut from, and with less risk of detection of the crime. So a new type of coinage was called for and a mill was set up in the Tower of London and powered by horses to produce perfectly circular coins. As a belt -and-braces measure an inscription or legend was engraved around the outer edge thereby making illegal clipping virtually impossible. But the authorities failed to see the problem with having both old and new currency in circulation at the same time. Obviously people hung on to the new with its full face value money’s worth, while spending and clipping - the old. Clearly the old coinage had to be withdrawn and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of May 1697 were the final days for collection at the ten furnaces specially built behind the Treasury, which was then at Whitehall between the Banqueting House and the river. For weeks great piles of coins, mostly half face value and barely recognisable had been collected, melted down and cast into ingots. In one instance some £52,000 of face value coins were melted to produce just over half that amount of silver worth. But distribution of the new coins was slow and while all this was going on another factor became evident; the value of coin clippings to silversmiths had to betaken out of the equation. is was done by raising the silver content of wrought plate to a level above that of coin. Not by so much as to make the material too soft for use and durability but sufficient to be detected by the assay. e figures were a raise from 92.5% pure to 95.84% pure. It was known at first as the New Sterling Standard but – as it
was denoted by a stamp showing the figure of Britannia – it soon became known as the Britannia Standard. is mark replaced the Lion Passant mark and in London the Leopard’s Head was replaced by a mark showing a Lion’s Head in profile, facing to the left with a jagged neckline as if torn from its body. Heraldically this is called ‘erased’ and so the Britannia Standard in London is denoted by the Britannia mark and the Lion’s Head Erased. In all other towns and cities the Lion’s Head Erased is used in addition to their town mark. From 1697 until 1720 the Britannia Standard was obligatory but in the latter year the economy in England had recovered sufficiently for the government to restore the old Sterling Standard while retaining the Britannia Standard as an option which it remains to the present day. In the early days of the maker’s mark, people were less literate and initials meant little or nothing to most, so symbols were commonly used. ese might be a miniature image of the shop or tavern sign where the silversmith had his workshop, such as leathern bottle or a swan, a star or crescent moon. By the 17th century we see the first two letters of the surname being used and by the beginning of the 18th century the silversmith’s initials gradually became the norm. From the 1720’s it can be said without question that the manufacture and sale of English silver was the most proficiently run and tightly controlled of all industries, with the welfare and benefit of manufacturer, supplier and purchaser held in equal esteem. e four marks as described filled every requirement and would surely have survived unaided save for a change in taxation in the 1780’s and the Convention Hallmarks introduced in the 1970’s, nearly two hundred years later. When we’ve dealt with them we really will get onto the silver from the Channel Isles, Scotland, Ireland and other desirable categories where the present day equivalent of the prudent Tudor person should still be putting their money n

ou'll ensure sweet dreams if you literally allow your imagination to run wild and indulge your taste to create a sanctuary that soothes your senses. "When it comes to creating the perfect retreat, you need to make sure it's as snug and as inviting as possible," says Damian Topping at bed specialists, Dreams. "We're demanding far more of this room than ever before, because it's often used as another 'lounge' where we sit and relax, watch television, and generally enjoy private time. "Nowadays, we find people have very definite ideas about their style. ey've often stayed in hotels and want to replicate a look they've liked, whether it's ultra-traditional, romantic or a sophisticated, 'hotel' style which leans to the contemporary." e bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom and will dominate the space, so care needs to be taken in choosing its scale, design and style. But equally important is making the right decor choice, says colour and design manager at Dulux Rebecca ompson. "Colour affects our mood and is particularly key in setting this room's atmosphere. While soft neutrals conjure a serene, restful space, that doesn't mean you can't have colour which is so popular in homes currently," she says. "Greens and blues are popular, and I'd favour a rising star in the colour palette, indigo. It's a striking, rich statement shade inspired by dreamy, ocean landscapes hidden from everyone but deep sea divers. "It tones with warm neutrals or other soothing tones of blue or 58

purple." Get the look with Indigo Night from the Dulux Paint Mixing range, one litre emulsion, £14.89. If a makeover's beyond the budget, simply opting for new bedding to welcome winter can be just as effective, advises interiors specialist, Alison Cork. "Good bed linen can totally transform not only the look of your bedroom but also your sleep quality," she says. "A beautiful set of crisp white soft sheets will give a bed an instant lift, and the comfort and texture can help you drift off more comfortably too." ROMANTIC STYLE Four-poster beds, buttoned headboards and sumptuous fabrics are all key ingredients of a room where indulgence and sensuality rule. "is is a room which is a visual feast and pleases the senses," says Rachael Offer, senior designer at Ashley Wilde, who have a variety of celebrity bed linen brands. "Mix sumptuous faux fur cushions with silky satin and velvet fabrics to create a full-on luxury feel. Little details count as well, from gilded mirrors to glass ornaments which catch the light, and lighting's all important. "Give a soft flattering glow with fairy lights, side lamps or candles." Boudoir buys: e And So To Bed bed collections conjure the elegance and period detail of a grand boudoir. A Victorian-style Dickens brass bed with polished nickel finish, £7,875 for king size,

is an investment piece and potential heirloom. Alternatively, you can feel like a pampered princess as you lie back on a Louvre Bedstead, currently from £999 in the Pied A Terre range, House of Fraser. It's upholstered in buttoned soft velvet with an elegantly scrolled head and foot. Dunelm Mill is always rich on style but kind to the purse, and its white painted Lilly Metal bedstead, with brass-look details, starts from £179.99. A budget winner. Bedding: Truffle satin and jet black flock combine in Edessa design bed linen from the Kylie Minogue At Home collection, from £75 for a double duvet cover, from Ashley Wilde (available from various stockists nationwide). Plunder the Littlewoods range for special touches, such as a Pearl row and Shams (cushions), £85, Mongolian cushion, £35, and a gorgeous duck egg blue floral Magnolia bedding set, £25 for a double set, and matching throw, £85. Create twinkling candlelight safely with Philips Imageo LED rechargeable candle lights, from £19.99 for a set of three, Amazon. COUNTRY STYLE e essence of country style is pared-back decoration, with the emphasis on texture and quality and natural materials. Decor should be simple with painted or tongue-and-groove panelled walls, or wallpaper featuring nature to help set a rustic scene. "Keep clashing patterns to a minimum and instead layer textured soft furnishings, quilts and cushions to give a snuggly feel," says Damian Topping. "Use a large rug, such as a sheepskin, to add warmth on wooden floorboards or hard floors. Add to the air of informality by using, instead of a bedside table, books stacked in a small tower by the bedside. Opt for functional, practical lights and a few well-chosen prints for the walls. Fussy embellishment has no place in these rooms." Boudoir buys: Bare winter trees, depicted on Birch wallpaper, £20 a roll in steel grey, would be a perfect backdrop for a Toronto bed, in oak with leather headboard, £775 for a double. Both from John Lewis. Alternatively, treat yourself to a new headboard, such as one reflecting the trend for Highland checks and plaids. Modern headboard, double £379, upholstered in Fanshaw plaid, from Marks & Spencer. Bedding: Snuggle under an Alfie throw, £60, in faux shearling wool and suede, John Lewis. If you favour a homespun-style a cable knit throw, currently £55 from the Linea range at House of Fraser, is

perfect, and would team well with its checked brushed cotton bed linen set, currently £72 for a double. Cox & Cox's hand stitched quilted bedspread, £150, in fashionable grey, and its linen cushion covers, from £32, have an appropriate simplicity. It also has suitable accessories such as a Nordic enamel pendant lamp, £120, and a cow hide patchwork rug, £700. Add cheery seasonal colours, in red and bright blue, with striped knitted throws, £30 each, from a selection at Bhs. HOTEL CHIC For contemporary hotel design invest in neutral bed linen, in crisp cotton and natural fabrics, a quality duvet, and pile up fluffy pillows, says Topping. "A plain decor scheme can be enlivened with a wall of pattern whose colours tie in with the neutral shades on the wall," he says. "Opt, ideally, for a generous sized headboard and streamlined furniture to add subtle but understated style. Overdress the bed, with an abundance of covers, quilts and a runner to create a lavish effect." Minimise clutter, he advises, and enhance the room with soft lighting using sidelighters and dimmers. "is style of room should cocoon you and black-out blinds and inter-lined curtains will avoid any chinks of light from disturbing your sleep." Boudoir buys: A Zinc bedstead, from £2,999 (mattress extra), from Dreams, upholstered in a metallic weave available in lush tones of taupe, mink, silver, nickel and amethyst, also has a 26-inch TV concealed at the foot. e White Company has made this 'hotel' style its own with its range of classic headboards and beautiful bedroom furniture. e buttoned Richmond, from £695, is one of my favourites, as is its white lacquer finish Linden four poster bed, from £2,500. Another great choice is a Jennifer upholstered bedstead, with button edging, £1,099 for a double, from John Lewis. Bedding: e Dorchester bed linen, made in Egyptian cotton, from £32 for a pillow case, and a Belmont Velvet Quilt, from £250, would make a decadent finishing touch. Both from e White Company. Embrace the look at a fraction of the price with Alison At Home's Berkeley bedding set, five-star quality 300 thread count with satin spot design, from £75 for a double set n

GRAND FINALE FOR THE AUDI A3 CABRIOLET

Yet this uniquely exotic player in the A3 model range has acquired a particularly enthusiastic following in the UK – which is now Europe’s biggest market for convertibles. Sadly, this highly appealing topless version of the A3 will shortly make a graceful exit from the marketplace, but not before one last hurrah in the shape of the “Final Edition” variant from Essex Audi Centres. Based on the Sport and S line specification models, the new Final Edition variants include numerous enhancements which maximise comfort, convenience and driving pleasure. e A3 Cabriolet Sport Final Edition takes the already comprehensively equipped Sport model and adds supple Vienna leather, front seat heating, rear parking sensors, automatic headlight and wiper activation, cruise control and a Bluetooth mobile phone interface. ese comfort and convenience features are in addition to existing Sport trimmings such as sports suspension, dual-zone climate control, a Concert CD audio system with auxiliary iPod/MP3 socket and a fast-acting fully automatic acoustic hood.

FIRST DRIVE LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR ROADSTER LP700-4 THE LATEST SET OF WHEELS ARE TAKEN FOR A SPIN
C
an you ever have too much of a good thing? ere are those who seem pretty confident that there is no such thing as too much. How else could you explain the existence of the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster LP700-4; even the name is longer than the Coupé on which it is based. e burning enthusiasm that rages down in Sant'Agata has resulted in a drop-top version of its incredible supercar, which gives you more of pretty much everything. ere's the looks for starters. e Aventador Coupé is hardly a wallflower, but the Roadster has a few tricks of its own. For starters it has to accommodate some sort of roof mechanism, so at the back where there is normally a slated window there are two hexagonal windows into the engine bay. e roof itself comes in two pieces of carbonfibre, and although at launch they're coloured matte black other colour options will be available later. To remove them you have to tilt the seat forward, release a catch, pull the panel out of position and stash it in the boot at the front. You could argue that's a bit of a faff (and you'd be right) but the alternative would compromise the car's looks, and a fabric roof would not handle 217mph.
62
MARCH2013
Yes, the Aventador Roadster is not a fraction slower than its Coupé counterpart. Under those little windows there is the same satanical 6.5-litre V12 engine that debuted in the fixed-roof version, pumping out a spectacular 691bhp. e roof system also helps keep the weight down; with that plus a little body strengthening the Roadster is a mere 50kg heavier, and as a result it can post 3.0 seconds for the 0-62mph sprint and bash past the 200mph mark. Lamborghini claims that the Roadster posts exactly the same lap times around its test circuit as the Coupé, so you can sleep safe in the knowledge you've not compromised yourself around the racetrack in the name of open-air fun. Unusually for a supercar drive, Lamborghini let us loose around a circuit first before trying the Aventador on the road but it gave us the opportunity to savour the performance in full flow. Idling down the pit lane it's hard not to be a little intimidated given the huge amount of power and the whopping price tag, but after only a few corners it's clear to see that it is actually a remarkably friendly device. ere's four-wheel drive spinning away beneath you to keep the power in check, and the Sport and Corse modes (selectable on
LAMB__ 04/03/2013 19:37 Page 2
MOTORS
the centre console) not only alter the operation of the ESP and the gearbox but also the power split between front and rear. Select the most aggressive Corse mode and the Aventador feels pinned to the track, and allows you to get on the power early out of the bends and simply rocket down the straights. Even in the tighter bends where the weight should count against it the Aventador feels surprisingly nimble too; the steering is packed with feel and the carbonfibre brakes remain strong lap after lap, even slowing down from over 150mph. Switch to the Sport mode and there's an increased power bias to the rear (90% as opposed to 80%) which makes the tail a little more happy to swing, but even then it is far less demanding to drive than you might imagine. And all the while the glorious V12 is wailing away behind your head, and with the roof up you can still lower the little rear window to allow the incredible sounds to flow more easily into the cabin. After the track came the road drive, and a quick look at the map revealed just why; Miami may be the playground of the rich and famous but it doesn't have a twisty road for miles in every direction. However a cruise along Ocean Drive revealed the other reason why you'd want to buy one; people love this car. Some other rival marques might not enjoy the same universal approval that the Aventador got, thanks to its sheer outlandishness. e maximum possible speed on Ocean Drive is about 15mph, but the crowd along the street waved, applauded, wanted their picture taken with it and were calling out for us to rev the engine. One guy raced out into the middle of the road and offered us a free lunch if we parked the Aventador outside his restaurant; that's the kind of response it provokes.
And that's exactly why you'd buy one. At almost £300,000 it won't be your only car and if you have that much to spend you're unlikely to be much of a wallflower yourself. Its rivals seem a bit plain and straightforward in comparison - this is a proper, outlandish, cartoon-like Lamborghini supercar that can still do the boring stuff too ■ FACTS AT A GLANCE Lamborghini Aventador Roadster LP700-4, Price: £294,665 Engine:

STAYING ON REPTON’S DOORSTEP
F
ast-growing local estate agent Hunt Property Services (HPS) has opened its first retail premises, within a stone’s throw of Repton Park, the exclusive development in which the company specialises. “Having reached the point where my team and I need a real shop window, rather than a virtual one from which to operate, we have been waiting for the ideal premises to become available,” says HPS director Hayley Hunt. “Now, in the most significant milestone since I formed the company, we have moved into offices that will provide a more suitable environment in which to showcase all the beautiful properties with which we are entrusted,” Hayley adds. “e Chigwell Road location couldn’t be better sited and makes us the closest estate agent, both physically as well as emotionally, to this special development.” Accepting a cheque from Hayley Hunt for his two charities – Redbridge MENCAP and Redbridge Carers Support Service Redbridge Mayor, Councillor Muhammed Javed, who performed the official opening for the new shop, said: “I applaud the opening of these new premises, which will boost the local economy, provide local jobs and help those looking for a home to achieve their dreams.” Although its portfolio of properties now extends to other prestige locations – including Manor Hall in Chigwell, Eton Heights in Woodford and the stunning Gaynes Park Mansions in Epping, HPS has built its reputation as the foremost agent for Repton Park, located on the Chigwell Woodford borders and home to several well-known sports and show business personalities, many of whom HPS has assisted. “While the new premises will give us scope to grow, it will not detract from the very personal service for which the company is renowned,” says Hayley. “I personally accompany all viewings and we vet every applicant, whether they are purchasing a large detached house or renting one of the smaller apartments, to ensure their suitability as good neighbours, as well as their financial probity. Importantly, I will continue to run my own home office on Repton Park, where I remain actively involved in the events team, which I was instrumental in co-founding. “I very much hope that our clients – past and present – will visit us in the new shop.” www.huntpropertyservices.co.uk ■ 74
