The Monaco Grandprix

he magic of Monaco will truly be in evidence from the 24th May when this beautiful Principality hosts formula One’s 70th Grand Prix. In the words of Graham Hill, it’s the only Grand Prix where you meet lamp-posts, trees, nightclubs, houses, hotels, curbs, gutters and boats. For one glorious weekend in May Monaco becomes a festival of style, colour and ear-splitting noise, blended with glamourous members of the ‘jet set’ and stars of screen and stage. Remember, Cannes Film Festival is in full swing just along the coast and is the perfect warm-up act for Monaco’s Grand Prix. We especially love Monaco during this week because it just doesn’t sleep and its vibrant atmosphere after the excitement of the racing keeps on going. Stunning cocktails, fabulous restaurants, dancing and people watching all come to the fore, but what has been missing until 2012 has been a beach party. Thankfully this year the secluded beach at Larvotto will play host to the exclusive Crazy Bear Beach Party. champagne will be flowing, along with great barbecue food,, and guests will be dancing to Boy George’s DJ set, Shuffler,The brilliant Fun lovin Criminals and Eddie Jordan on drums with his band the Robbers. All this in addition to fire, Vaudeville and burlesque dancers. What more could we ask for? Entry to this epitome of chic is on a strictly ticket only basis and numbers are limited. You need to be a part of this night to remember – I have seen what the guys at Crazy Bear are capable of and I really wouldn’t want to miss it. enquiries@crazybeargrandprixevents.co.uk Feathered Edge Events Ltd www.flygrandprix.com 01749 890053

he Investec Derby Festival is the pinnacle of the sporting and social calendar, set to attract over 200,000 racegoers. This year, Epsom Downs Racecourse will host the first event of Diamond Jubilee celebrations as ‘Britain’s Biggest Day Out’; the Investec Derby is celebrated for the 233rd year. The two-day festival opens with Investec Ladies Day on Friday 1st June whereby elegant, fashionable racegoers gather for a classic day’s racing featuring the Group 1 Investec Oaks; combining high style stakes both on and off the track. Saturday 2nd June presents the ‘World’s Greatest Flat Race’, the Investec Derby, worth £1.325 million in prize money. Attracting an eclectic mix, from royalty and famous celebrities decked out in traditional morning suits, to partygoers spanning the famous Hill in the centre of the course, this is the race that brings the nation together. Downs Racecourse, having attended the Derby in 1953 only four days after she was crowned Queen. She has won the Oaks twice with Carozza and Dunferline in her Silver Jubilee year, and has had ten runners in the Derby; therefore it is fitting that this prestigious event marks the first engagement of the extended weekend celebrations. Last year, a large gathering of Royal Family members including newlyweds, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge turned out to support The Queen as her horse Carlton House was favourite to win the only Classic race alluding Her Majesty. However despite being willed on by the sixfigure crowd that thronged the Downs and millions viewing on Television, Carlton House could only finish third, narrowly beaten by the Investec Derby winner Pour Moi. Guest of Honour at this year’s Investec Derby Festival is Willie Carson OBE, five times British Champion Jockey and four times Epsom Derby winner. Willie Carson has won 17 British Classic Races, 11 Irish Classics, exceeded 100 winners in a season 23 times, and celebrated a total of 3,828 races, making him

Evoque RANGE ROVER

SPECIAL EDITION WITH

Victoria Beckham MAKES GLOBAL DEBUT

L

and Rover and Victoria Beckham have unveiled a new bespoke luxurious, hand-finished Range Rover Evoque Special Edition. The exclusively design is the result of a collaboration between Land Rover Design, led by Gerry McGovern with Victoria Beckham, winner of the coveted Designer Brand of the Year award at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. Victoria was appointed Creative Design Executive in July 2010 and has worked with the Land Rover design team over the past 18 months to create her Special Edition. Victoria Beckham said: “I am very excited to be working with Land Rover as I have an enormous amount of respect for the brand. I’ve always driven a Range Rover, for me they are the epitome of quality and luxury. When I first started working with the team I did a lot of research, and created mood boards to show the team my love of timeless and classic design. I looked at yachts, luxury jets and classic cars. It’s the small detail that makes all the difference. I want everyone who gets into this car to feel special and empowered by its quality and craftsmanship. I like that it feels luxurious but also has quite a classic edge to it as well as a contemporary feel.”

Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern said: “The design of Evoque has truly captured the hearts of customers worldwide. Working with Victoria the intention was to create a Special Edition that extends its character in a new direction through understated, restrained colour and detail changes. Both Land Rover and Victoria Beckham are British luxury brands with credibility and global appeal, this dual ‘Britishness’ makes the collaboration even more exciting especially when considering the huge audience for bespoke products around the world. Working with Victoria we quickly recognised our similar design tastes and ambition for this car. For example at the first meeting, Victoria herself inspired the use of rose gold. She was wearing dark clothes and no jewellery apart from a rose gold, 3 2 M AY 2 0 1 2

man’s watch. I was struck by the juxtaposition of the masculine watch on a very elegant, feminine wrist. We both agreed it was the ideal way to introduce a softer touch to the bold, assertive exterior colour scheme.Throughout the process we were keen to ensure that the vehicle would appeal equally to both men and women, in fact Victoria always maintained that she wanted her husband David to be proud to drive this car. We fully enjoyed working with Victoria and I am confident this special edition will appeal to discerning luxury consumers globally.” Quintessential British luxury is a hallmark of both the Land Rover and Victoria Beckham brands. This Special Edition allows that impression to be further heightened through the use of the finest quality materials and

craftsmanship. Powered by the lightweight, all-aluminium 240PS 2.0-litre petrol engine the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition will be hand-finished by Land Rover’s Engineering to Order division (ETO) in Warwickshire. Essential to the design is the high quality hand-finished matt grey paint, unique 20” gloss black forged alloy wheels and luxurious rose-gold details, limited solely to this Special Edition. Complimenting the ultra-modern, stealth-like exterior is an elegant and luxurious interior. The sport design four-seats are finished in a semi-aniline Vintage Tan leather, with a bold ‘baseball’ stitch detail chosen by Victoria as a tongue-in-cheek reference to her sporting husband David. The same leather is also used to cover the door inserts, arm rests and central storage box lid. Another personal touch are the exclusive and ultra-luxurious floor mats. The designer explained that when she was a young girl, her father owned a Rolls-Royce and she would enjoy taking her shoes off to sink her bare feet into the thick carpeting. Land Rover’s designers replicated this for her by using mohair, usually reserved for luxury clothing, to make the mats. Bespoke luggage completes the holistic design package that is the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham. This four-piece set is based on the designer’s own luggage range, using the same high-quality internal structure and clothed in hand stitched black leather. The set comprises two his and her’s wheeled suitcases and wash bags, all of which are lined in the same microsuede used for the roof lining, and as a finishing touch the zip pulls are finished in the same matt grey as the exterior. A beautiful hand stitched leather wallet, with rose-gold detail containing a guide to the exclusive features of the car is cobranded Range Rover Evoque and signed by Victoria Beckham. Victoria Beckham is a joint venture between Victoria Beckham and Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment Ltd. About LAnd RoveR

Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck has fallen out of the world’s top 10 best restaurants but the chef is still riding high after his newest enterprise rose up the ranks. This means that despite The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, falling down to 13th in the list, the Briton is now effectively the most successful chef in the world because he is the only one to have more than one restaurant in the top 15 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list

Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant Revealed Sunday 3rd June 2012, 2pm - 6pm

T

he organisers of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant have revealed the details of the 1000-boat tribute to Her Majesty The Queen’s 60-year reign. One of the largest public events ever held in London, the Pageant will take place on the river from Battersea Bridge to Tower Bridge. The flotilla itself will be over seven miles long and will include some 25 miles of Thames river bank and pass under 14 bridges. It will take 70 minutes to pass any given point. This unique spectacle, inspired by a rich history and tradition of entertainment and theatre on the Thames, is expected to include 20,000 participants on the water, millions of spectators on the river banks and London’s public spaces, and a global 4 4 M AY 2 0 1 2

audience expected by the major broadcasters to number many hundreds of millions. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said, “I am proud that London can play such an important role in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and there couldn’t be a better start to an outstanding summer of aweinspiring events in the capital. The Thames Pageant and associated events around the capital will not only provide the most fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne but will be an amazing opportunity to show off to the world London’s pride in its heritage and traditions ahead of the Olympics” The Music herald Barges

The flotilla will be divided into ten sections, with music

herald barges separating each one. The Pageant’s music will be a diverse mixture of the contemporary and classical. The final music herald barge will be the London Philharmonic Orchestra, performing a British repertoire, including music by Benjamin Britten and Gustav Holst. The sequence oF The FloTilla

Heralded by The Royal Jubilee Bells, and led by Gloriana, the hand-built, 88-foot rowbarge, will include rowed and paddled vessels, modern row boats, kayaks and Dragon boats. The second section includes boats carrying the flags of the Commonwealth nations, Realms, Territories and Dependencies. Then comes the Royal

section, with support vessels from the former Royal Yacht Britannia, accompanying the Pageant’s flagship, the Royal Barge, The Spirit of Chartwell, on which The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, and other members of the Royal family will travel, decorated and adorned for the occasion at the head of the royal section of the flotilla. The Prince of Wales will play a key role on the day as Patron of the Pageant. This will be followed immediately by the Guard of Honour, the Dunkirk Little Ships, historic vessels, working boats, including steam boats and tugs, and then an array of leisure vessels, narrow boats and Dutch barges. The final two sections are designated for passenger vessels, allowing for significant public participation as part of the flotilla itself. Applications to take part from boat owners from the UK and the Commonwealth have been three times oversubscribed. The Pageant organisers made the final decisions on vessels selection, with advice from the Port of London Authority (PLA) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. BaTTersea Park JuBilee FesTival

As part of the planned entertainment for the Pageant, there will also be a festival held in Battersea Park, where visitors will be able to watch the flotilla as it passes by the park’s northern Thameside. The Jubileethemed entertainment, curated by Hemingway Design and Clare Patey, will be a day-long programme of funfair, competitions, games, food and cookery, storytelling, fashion, and live music through the decades. The Horse And Groom

2012

ANNIVERSARY

Two hundred years ago, in the peaceful village of East Ashling at the foot of the South Downs, changes were apace. To meet the developing needs of the time the old blacksmiths was closing its doors to its four legged customers and being re-born as a pub, the Horse & Groom. Now in 2012, this charming inn celebrates its bicentenary. Whilst much has changed in the last 200 years, the Horse & Groom remains a delightful reminder of this bygone age. Flagstone floors and timbered ceilings combine with age-old flint walls, a cavernous inglenook and an old Victorian range, and of course the ubiquitous horseshoes adorn the beams! Stepping into the wood-panelled bar is like “coming home” courtesy of the welcome from the owners Michael and Michelle Martell 5 2 M AY 2 0 1 2

and friendly banter is always the order of the day. Of course the quality ales have to speak for themselves, and the pub’s CAMRA awards and recognition in the Good Beer Guide are jealously guarded. The pub still uses its centuries-old underground cellars as part of its recipe for success on the fine ales front. For those who prefer the tipple of the vine, the pub offers wines from small vineyards and specialist producers that enable it to offer “quality wines at sensible prices”. The food at the Horse & Groom has long made it a destination for locals and travellers alike. Locally sourced ingredients are the feature on the chef Malcolm Scott’s menus which change to reflect the seasons and fresh regional produce. As the days and evenings warm, the restaurant “extends” into the enclosed cottage garden for an al

24TH-27TH MAY 2012 WENTWORTH GOLF CLUB SURREY

t’s time once again for the finest golfers across Europe to descend upon Surrey and compete in the BMW PGA Championship at the iconic Wentworth Club in Virginia Water. The BMW PGA Championship represents a vibrant partnership between BMW and The European Tour and enjoys its deserved status as the Tour’s Flagship event for more than a quarter of a century. Severiano Ballesteros, Angel Cabrera, Nick Faldo, Tony Jacklin, Bernhard Langer, José Maria Olazábal, Arnold Palmer and Ian Woosnam, all Major Champions, feature among a distinguished roll call of winners since the inception of the PGA Championship in 1955. This year a total of 14 Major Champions will descend on Wentworth Club from 24th - 27th

May when the iconic West Course plays host to the 58th staging of The European Tour’s Flagship Event, the BMW PGA Championship. Ireland’s quartet of Major winners will be led by World Number Two Rory McIlroy, who will be keen to bolster his collection of titles by WENTWORTH GOLF CLUB

triumphing at Wentworth Club, where his highest finish was fifth place in 2009. McIlroy’s close friend Graeme McDowell, the man he succeeded as US Open Champion last year, will also be bidding to take home the lion’s share of the €4.5million prize fund, as will the

reigning Open Champion Darren Clarke and three-time Major winner Padraig Harrington, who finished in a tie for sixth place on his last appearance at the BMW PGA Championship in 2010. Another man with three Major titles to his name is local resident Ernie Els. He will be on familiar territory when he tees up for the 17th time at the BMW PGA Championship, having overseen the renovations made to the West Course and also lived on the Wentworth Estate for several years before relocating to America. Els has tasted success over the West Course, having won the World Match Play Championship on four occasions when it was played at the famous Surrey venue, but he is yet to capture the BMW PGA Championship title, finishing runnerup three times. The first time was in 1994, when Els finished second M AY 2 0 1 2 5 5

behind José María Olazábal, who had recently secured his maiden Major title at the Masters Tournament. Eighteen years on, the Spaniard will make his 24th appearance at the BMW PGA Championship, where he will also use the opportunity to cast his eye over potential Team members in his role as Europe’s current Ryder Cup Captain. Olazábal’s fellow former Masters Tournament champion Charl Schwartzel, who won the Green Jacket in 2011, is searching for his first victory at the BMW PGA Championship, as is his compatriot Retief Goosen, winner of the US Open Championship in 2001 and 2004. Other sporting stars scheduled to

tee up on the iconic West Course include Harry Redknapp, the current manager of Tottenham Hotspur; his son Jamie, the former Liverpool midfielder and current Sky Sports pundit; former England and Arsenal forward Ian Wright; Olympic silver medal-winning athlete Kriss Akabusi; and former tennis player Tim Henman, a winner of 15 ATP titles. Current Liverpool FC manager Kenny Dalglish and BBC TV’s ‘Match of the Day’ pundit Alan Hansen, both leading members of the Liverpool side which dominated English football during the 1980s, will also be taking part in the Pro-Am. The rowing knights Sir Matthew Pinsent and Sir Steve Redgrave – who between them won a total

of nine Olympic gold medals – will also be in attendance along with another knight of the realm, Sir Clive Woodward, and Matt Dawson, a member of the England team which Woodward coached to Rugby World Cup glory in 2003. Dawson, who finished runnerup in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in 2006, will play alongside one of the show’s judges, Len Goodman; while host Sir Bruce Forsyth, who lives on the Wentworth Estate, will not have far to travel to tee up in the Pro-Am. The Pro-Am, which will feature the top three in the Official World Golf Ranking in Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood, gets underway at 8am on Wednesday 23rd May, with the afternoon groups set to tee off at 1pm.

Advance tickets for the Pro-Am cost £8 – a £2 saving on the gate price – and can be bought at www.europeantourtickets.com. Advance tickets for the tournament days can also be bought online, with Adult One Day Tickets priced at £30 (a saving of £5), Weekend Tickets at £45 and Season Tickets at £60 (a saving of £10). More than 93,000 people flocked through the gates in the tournament week last year, and once again demand for tickets will be high. The past and present of both BMW and The European Tour was celebrated in an historic gathering at Wentworth Club earlier this month.

On Thursday April 12, 1972, the first round of official European Tour competition began – in the Spanish Open at Pals Golf Club in Girona – a tournament won four days later by the host nation’s Antonio Garrido. Following on from that, a month later – May 1972 – saw the establishment of BMW M GmbH, one of whose first models was the iconic M1.

The famous Surrey course plays host to the BMW PGA Championship – the Tour’s flagship event – but it was the 40th anniversary of both organisations which was honoured before a special golf challenge match over the West Course between representatives from BMW, The European Tour, Wentworth Club,

To recognise both occasions, John Jacobs OBE, the founding father of The European Tour and the Tour’s first Director General in 1972, was joined by the Tour’s current Chief Executive George O’Grady CBE and professionals Sam Torrance OBE and Michael King, who both played in the early years of the Tour, for a commemorative

photograph around an original gleaming red BMW M1 parked outside the Wentworth Clubhouse. “This is a very special occasion and I can’t quite believe it is 40 years ago this week that The European Tour began – time does fly, doesn’t it,” said the now 87 year old Jacobs who aside from being instrumental in the birth of the Tour, is also recognised worldwide as one of the game’s great coaches. One of the players who benefitted from Jacobs’ foresight in the early years was Torrance who finished 37th on the 1972 Order of Merit before going on to record 21 European Tour victories in a glittering career which, to this day, sees the 58 year old Scot still hold the record for most European Tour events played with 706. “I am very

honoured to have been a European Tour professional for 40 years and very proud to be here today to help celebrate this unique anniversary,” said Torrance who now plies his trade on the European Senior Tour where, on three occasions, he has claimed the Order of Merit trophy which bears John Jacobs’ name. The result of the golf match saw the combined team from The European Tour/BMW/Wentworth Club defeat the combined team from BBC Television/Sky Sports by 5 ½ - 4 ½. A Soft Interior

19th May to 6th June 2012

An exhibition of over 20 new Our next exhibition ‘A Soft Interior’ by Lorraine Wake who gained a Honours Degree in Fine Art at Falmouth features over 20 new contemporary oil paintings by this talented Kent artist. This collection of new work captures the intimacy, comforts and memory of every day objects that surround us in our environment resulting in an enticing and captivating exhibition. Lorraine describes her work... My recent work is a dialogue between the intimate objects I paint and the space they occupy. One informing the other. The act of painting, for me is one of play and contemplation. As the painting 6 4 M AY 2 0 1 2

contemporary oil paintings by Lorraine Wake

develops the composition becomes like a stage set arousing curiosity and inviting questions about what may have happened, or what is about to begin. The layered surfaces reveal the process of applied oil paint which hold history, time, and memory.

I choose to paint everyday objects, beds, chairs, cabinets, that are fundamental to our daily life. The intimacy of a bed; the characteristics of a chair; the cupboard that may contain memories, all shape the intimacy of our lives, so that they become metaphors for the very stuff of life, providing a familiar space yet without human presence. My inspiration comes from scanning

magazines, old photographs, paintings, as well as travel. Personal experiences of hotel foyers and guest rooms never fail to stimulate the imagination. I lived in Marrakech for a year, and spending time in Havanna, Paris and other destinations all contribute to keeping my work alive . A new home in a converted church is also beginning to make its wonderful influence felt. Although the work may appear to have an illusory, or ephemeral quality to it, these new works are underpinned by the linear marks that serve to anchor and ground the objects in the space. Colour is always an intrinsic element of each painting evoking a dreamy, poetic, and quiet

place in which one can get lost. A true reverie.

n the thriving village of West Byfleet, everyone is talking about the new jewellery shop. Brooklands Jewellers is owned and run by three exceptionally talented craftsmen/ jewellers who have previously worked in Hatton Garden (London’s jewellery quarter) for a combined total of nearly one hundred years.

amazing to be able to discuss the details with the actual jeweller and even to see the job at the different stages of its manufacture. As well as this valuable asset, they have a comprehensive and eclectic range of ready made jewellery in stock. This includes some fabulous diamond rings, necklaces and bracelets , most of which have been made in the workshop and are therefore unique. It extends to Nicole Barr silver jewellery and the fashionable candy bling range. There is a very good selection of pearls and they also have the full range of Royal Selangor giftware, solving the problem of christening presents and the like.

They have a fully fitted workshop on the premises which is unique in the area. Between them they have the skill and equipment to manufacture any item of jewellery. They can make anything to your own specific designs and requirements, redesign old jewellery in a more contemporary style or even alter modern jewellery to a more classic style. All the work Repairing jewellery to the highest is done on the premises and it is standard is another forte. They have

a quick turnaround and prices are competitive.

Because of the direct link with Hatton Garden, Brooklands Jewellers can pay the best prices for your scrap gold, silver and platinum. Prices are still high so it really is worth clearing out those old jewellery boxes, drawers and cupboards. They also buy and sell quality watches. Watch repairs are undertaken and watch batteries can usually be fitted while you wait.

Insurance companies are becoming increasingly demanding so the Valuation Service offered is done by a registered valuer and is indisputable. It is refreshing that the fees for this are on a fixed scale and not a percentage of the total which

can lead to inflated valuations. Reassuringly, any jewellery left for valuation does not leave the premises.

All in all, the shop has a contemporary, bright and airy feel to it with a very friendly ambience. Do pay them a visit. It is interesting just to have a look and if you take along your scrap gold as well, you will be pleasantly surprised. You are certainly assured of a warm welcome from Dave, Stewart and Dave.

very week, new lines hit the beauty market. But often it's the products that have been sitting unassumingly on the shelves for years that are still causing a stir - the must-have items that outlive seasonal trends. "In order for a product to become a cult classic, it has to be timeless, sophisticated and continually offer that feel-good factor which consumers seek," explains Hannah Phillips, beauty buyer at Harvey Nichols. "Skincare is more of a loyalty product, so as long as it produces results, it will remain in a person's regime."

Whether you're an aficionado to just one or crave them all, these long-standing cult classics are standing the test time. YSL TOUCHE ECLAT Brightening faces for 20 years, Touche Eclat is the magic gold pen that makes early mornings (and late nights) easier to bear. e go-anywhere highlighter launched in 1992 with just one colour. But now new shades are being introduced, celebrating two decades of business, taking the total to 10 subtle tones. e original pen still dominates luxury top 10 lists, but a limited edition 20 Years

Collector version is also available from mid April. Both cost £25 (www.yslbeauty.co.uk). ESTEE LAUDER ADVANCED NIGHT REPAIR irty years ago nobody had heard of a face serum - and then Night Repair broke beauty boundaries. e first skincare product to use Hyaluronic Acid, the container was designed to look like an old-fashioned pharmacy bottle, complete with an apothecary dropper to reinforce the product's serious skincare sentiment. e word 'Advanced' was added in 1991 when the solution was reformulated.

DR. ARIEL HAUS London’s Most Talked About Brazilian Doctor

D

r Ariel Haus is a leader in the use of Carboxytherapy both in London and Rio de Janeiro at his clinics. His most sought after treatment request has been for the treatment of dark under-eye circles also known as ‘bags’ under the eyes and Dr Haus sees this as the ideal treatment for an overworked city like London where looking good counts. A very minimally-invasive treatment which is safe and fast and can be done in around 5 minutes, the treatment of dark undereye circles will showcase a profound improvement in the skin texture and contour as the majority of dark under-eye circles are caused by poor circulation beneath the lower eyelids. Rejuvenating this area with Carboxytherapy is an excellent way to bid farewell to those undesired dark circles/bags. Dr Ariel Haus injects a small amount of carbon dioxide gas just beneath the skin of the lower eyelid; this is virtually painless and risk-free. Around 2-4 treatments are needed and in some cases 6 all spaced one week apart. The results following the injections are that circulation increases and dark under-eye circles improve and most look to have completely disappeared. Carboxytherapy dates back to the 1930s and by using

this additional carbon dioxide the body recovers from poor blood flow and in turn the body reacts by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area (in this case under-eye circles). Furthermore Carboxytherapy increases collagen formation in the skin by giving it a more youthful appearance. Dr Ariel Haus is registered as a medical practitioner in Brazil, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The specific noninvasive cosmetic treatments that Dr. Haus offers are: • Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and also to rejuvenate the skin • Treatments to address

wrinkles and frown lines • Dermal fillers (bioplasty and Restylane SUBQ) to smooth out deeper wrinkles and lines • Skin treatments, rejuvenation and hair removal using eMax laser • Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with VelaShape, the latest technology to achieve non-surgical liposuction • Solutions to wrinkles, crow’s feet and scars with the use of CO2RE; a versatile fractional CO2 resurfacing system which reduces scars amongst other things In addition to his private clinic in Harley Street, London, Dr. Haus also works in the NHS and by arrangement is also able to see patients in Rio de Janeiro. Dr Ariel Haus only uses non-invasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States. 25 TH ANNIVERSARY

You’ll need good teeth to eat good food Unless semolina is your desired dish of the day, best learn to look after your teeth. Good dental hygiene is the only reliable method to be sure that you can bite into a crisp carrot or a good steak when you want to for the rest of your life.

All good dentists go on and on about looking after your teeth and gums. They make money from providing dental treatment yet they still prefer you to make sure you don’t need them because you’ve fulfilled your part of the deal: you are responsible for your own dental hygiene. Good dental health covers all aspects of your mouth, especially the teeth and gums. So you can eat, speak, laugh and look nice, your teeth and gums need to be cared for by you and your dentist and hygienist. The alternative is tooth decay, fillings, bleeding gums, tooth loss and possibly bad breath. It’s not a pretty picture, is it? The health of your mouth is linked to that of your overall health. The ability to chew and swallow food is essential for obtaining the nutrition we need for our wellbeing. But eating and drinking the wrong food can be part of the problem. For many years the message to prevent tooth decay was to avoid sugar and sugary food and drinks. However, as well as sweets and fizzy pop, pasta, rice, potato crisps, some fruits and even bread can promote acid formation in plaque. This is why you must rinse your mouth, or preferably brush your teeth, after meals. The characteristics of a food, especially how strongly it clings to teeth, influences how quickly tooth decay starts. For example crisps and biscuits stick to teeth for longer periods than many sweets because soluble sugars as used in some sweets are washed away more quickly by saliva. Dried fruit, although great for digestive health, sticks to the teeth like glue. Dental decay, the most common disorder affecting the teeth, is caused by bacteria which form a sticky film or pellicle dental plaque - on the surfaces of the tooth. The billions of bacteria in the plaque use carbohydrates from food and drink and produce acids which actually dissolve the minerals of the tooth and, before you know it, there is a hole and you need a filling. Tooth decay is not inevitable and is preventable. One of the best weapons you have is always with you: saliva - it clears food debris from your mouth, neutralises the acids produced from plaque bacteria and provides calcium and phosphate to the teeth in a smart process called remineralisation. This takes forty minutes from the last ingestion of food.

Many dentists recommend rinsing with fresh water after eating, though brushing after meals is better if you can. And by the way: daily flossing is a non-negotiable component of good dental hygiene. There are some great new gadgets to help with the daily floss – look out for small and brightly coloured interdental brushes at your dentist or local pharmacy. Kids will love using these. All the dentists and hygienists at the White Dental Company will be pleased to advise. Regular dental check-ups and visits to the practice hygienist will help detect, monitor and reduce potential problems. The hygienist’s job is to remove plaque and this will help to lessen the incidence of dental decay. If very little plaque is present, the amount of acid formed is insignificant and the likelihood of decay is significantly reduced. If your teeth are in trouble, fear not as all is not lost. Far from it. A good professional practice, and The White Dental Company is just such a place, can help you with all your dental requirements. For patients who require replacement teeth, dental implants can be fitted in one day and there is a variety of techniques to minimise any discomfort and to ensure you are comfortable during and after the procedure. If your problem is a smile that is less than brilliant, or you are not happy with the state of your teeth and gums, using minimally invasive techniques the White Dental team will give a you smile that you will be proud of - and teeth that will last you a lifetime! Ideally you should visit the hygienist and have a check-up every six months. Discuss a regular plan with your dentist and once it is in place, put it in your diary in pen and stick to it. Unless, of course, you like semolina…

Bloomsbury Frameworks traded in Bloomsbury, central London, from the middle of the nineteenth century until 2005 when the family firm’s last proprietor, Peter Binning, died. It is considered to be the only company of its type in Britain that has survived and continuously traded since 1837- the year Queen Victoria came to the throne. From 1837 the company specialised in the production and application of ‘composition ornament’ for frames, mirrors and associated furniture. The company supplied finely decorated frames for many leading public and private collections. This early ‘golden age’ saw the birth of the National Portrait Gallery (1856), the V&A (1857), The National Gallery (1884) and the Tate (1897), originally as ‘The National Gallery of British Art’. The ornamentation was created using exquisitely detailed reversecarvings in boxwood. The fine skills that their wood carvers possessed have now been lost, but fortunately the moulds still survive as the ‘Bloomsbury Collection’. These reverse carvings, accumulated over the past 170+ years, now form a unique collection and perhaps the only unbroken large-scale collection of its kind in use today. Joseph McCarthy had worked closely with Peter Binning for many years and, following Peter’s death in 2005, the firm was incorporated into Joseph McCarthy (Fine Frames) Ltd. Acer Palmatum New

The Best of

The Orient The Acer (or maple) family is a huge collection of shrubs and trees prized for their foliage, ranging from the English sycamore to the glorious Canadian maples. However my favourites by far are the more delicate and smaller growing Japanese maples, which originate 8 6 M AY 2 0 1 2

not just in Japan but also China and Korea. This group of plants, include the Acer palmatums, japonicums and shirasawanum, they range from shrubs to small trees, many being grown as multi stemmed trees. All tend to grow broader than they are tall. Many are very slow growing

They are all deciduous, dropping their leaves over winter, but in so doing many produce brilliant displays of autumn leaf colours, of intense reds, yellows and oranges before the imminent leaf fall. Some such as Acer palmatum grows tall, whereas its fine cut leaf relative the dissectum, grows distinctly domed

shape. This variety is often grafted onto a taller stem of a palmatum to provide a classic shaped weeping acer. Colour wise they vary in leaf colour from the green of the straight palmatum, through all the shades to the deep burgundy purple of Garnet, plus a few yellows to boot.

HOUSE & GARDEN

Acer Shirasawanum Aureum

Unlike many of their larger relatives, these trees are truly trees for the small garden. Many are happy to stay in pots all their lives, but even when planted in borders most tend not to grow excessively large. The other feature of these plants is that they are happy to be pruned to maintain their size and shape. With this in mind it is not surprising that most cultivars originated in the Far East, the home of bonsai. In my garden I possess a range of Japanese Acers, which have all lived happily in large pots for the last 20 years or more. I find this way of cultivation ideal as it enables me to control the shape and size of them easily. This form of cultivation also enables me to be able to rearrange the pots throughout the season, allowing different plants to be

Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum

Acer Palmatum Sango Kaku

highlighted showing off the many leaf shapes and colours and plant forms as they change. Despite their delicate appearance they are hardy plants with few diseases. They do suffer from branch die back particularly if stressed, but after a prune and feed they bounce back quickly. The best position to grow them in is one which is sheltered, from strong winds, and in full or partial shade. Too much shade and the intensity of the leaf colour, both in the summer and the autumn will be reduced. Wind and frost can be detrimental, particularly to young growth; however they recover quickly provided the position is not too exposed. Yellow and variegated leaf varieties, such as shirasawanum aureum, and finely cut leaf varieties, such as

Acer Palmatum Dissectum

the dissectums, need the most protection from the sun and wind. Traditionally many people associate acers with planting near water due to the Japanese water garden effect; however despite enjoying moist soil, they should not be waterlogged. If there is a downside to these beautiful plants, it is trying to remember their Japanese names! Names such as Acer palmatum Sango kaku, do not exactly roll off the tongue, but it is not one to forget if you do not want to miss out on it’s vibrant yellow autumn foliage or it’s coral pink stem colour that comes into it’s own in the winter. Planting associations include grouping with azaleas and rhododendrons, where the acer’s

Acer Palmatum Dissectum Garne

delicate leaves and autumn colours complement the coarser evergreen leaves and spring flowers of the former. Likewise planting in association with bamboo and nandina domestica will give a traditional Japanese look, particularly near water. The golden Japanese acer, Acer shirasawanum aureum looks particularly striking under planted with shorter companions such as hostas, liriope and ophiopogon, which also like the more shaded position needed by this variety. ‘I’ve never been to a nursery like this before!’ Tucked away on Woburn Hill, opposite St George’s College near Weybridge, you will find the jewel in the crown of Surrey`s horticultural industry. From the outside you look down the long entrance driveway lined with specimen trees and wonder what is inside. Once you have parked and walk through the nursery entrance gates, you enter a world of horticultural inspiration, where the range and quality of plants makes you wonder why you have never previously visited.

‘Where did you find this range of plants?’ We are passionate about everything we do at The Plantation and one thing you will notice immediately is the scale and size of plants on offer compared to a regular garden centre. As keen plantsmen we take pleasure in personally selecting plants from the best growers from all over Europe.

‘I need screening, I am not able to have a solid fence on my boundary and I have a large gap to fill’ With continual building development in the local area we find that our customers frequently ask for high screening and, quite understandably, they don’t want to wait 20 years for the plants to grow. Through our long term production plan we can provide plants of all sizes, small and large. High hedges are another frequent request and again we can provide a wide range of plants, small and large, to suit all requirements, all locations, and all budgets. ‘What else do I need to do the planting?’ From composts, bark mulch and fertilisers to professional tools, tree stakes and wheelbarrows, we have everything you need to undertake your project, including some specialist items not available elsewhere. In addition, our Gavin Jones Garden

Machinery Shop offers a range of high quality garden machinery including major brands such as Stihl , Hayter , Alko , Mitox and Viking. Staffed by qualified and experienced fitters, we offer advice, demonstrations, equipment and spare parts as well as servicing and repairs for most types of garden machinery.

‘How do I get this home and plant it?’ Here at the Plantation we offer a variety of delivery options. We can wrap and pack plants into your own vehicle, deliver them in our delivery van, or for larger trees, deliver them on our lorry, complete with mounted crane. If you feel the plants are too large for you to handle, we also offer a planting service. We will visit your garden, assess the planting area, and then arrange for an all-in service, all backed up with a 12 month guarantee.

nursery, enabling you to relax with your refreshments in the middle of the beautiful surroundings.

‘I need some help please’ Here at The Plantation we pride ourselves on the high standard of our customer service; we understand the benefits of helping our clients to make an informed decision so our friendly qualified staff are always on hand to guide you through your purchase. Alternatively, if it’s a complete design and build project that you’re after, our experienced award-winning team can offer the full range of design and landscaping services.

‘What makes The Plantation special?’ The Plantation may offer spectacular plants in an inspirational setting but what makes it so special is its staff and the organisation behind them. The Plantation, as part of the ‘Fancy a coffee?’ successful Gavin Jones Group, has Choosing plants can be thirsty work achieved Investors in People Gold so why not visit the Plantation Coffee Standard, recently won the Toast of House serving Starbucks coffee? As Surrey Business Award 2012, is an well as a range of coffee, teas and soft award-winning landscape business drinks we also serve a selection of hot and an active member of the British and cold paninis , sandwiches ,soups Association of Landscape Industries and cakes . The Plantation Coffee (BALI) and the Horticultural Trade House is located centrally within the Association (HTA).

The Plantation, based near Weybridge in Surrey, is a source of inspiration for all visitors whether keen horticulturalists or novice gardeners. At the Plantation we pride ourselves in displaying our plants in a creative and informative way, and visitors are often amazed at the range of varieties and sizes we offer. In addition to our creatively displayed nursery we also offer design and landscaping services ranging from planting of single trees through to complete garden design and construction, all done by our award winning design and landscaping department.

home and they pay for your care, knowing they will be repaid when the property is sold.

f you are elderly and unable to manage at home, you may need to move into a care home. The type of care you require may dictate how your care is paid for and an assessment of your needs will be completed.

If you own a share in a property which is being occupied by the co-owner (other than as mentioned), then the valuation process is different and may result in a low or nil value.

If you need help with washing, cooking, toileting etc. then you will be expected to pay, if possible, from your own resources. You will need to complete a financial assessment of your means. Currently, if your savings exceed £23,250 you will be expected to pay for your care yourself. If they are above £14,250, but below £23,250, payment will be taken over by the local authority, which will then require a contribution from you. Below the lower level you will pay a contribution from your income alone. If you own your house, its value will be taken into account in the assessment, unless your spouse, a relative over 60 or other (in a few cases) is still living there.
