At least Shades richer How EL James made £20million in 18 months
E
ighteen months ago no one had heard of Londoner Erika Leonard – or EL James to use her pseudonym – but the woman who invented “mummy porn” is now raking in almost £1million a week. Yes, that’s £1million a week. So, how did she do it? Last month ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ became the best-selling book in Britain of all time. More astonishing is that it began as a “self-published” book, a route to market traditionally taken by less-talented authors who failed to secure a publishing deal. James’ story goes to show that the enhanced royalty rates offered by self-publishing can mean successful writers can end up very rich very quickly. Leonard formerly worked as a television executive, and lives in West London with her husband of over 20 years, screenwriter and director Niall Leonard, and their two teenage sons. Raised in Buckinghamshire and privately educated, Leonard read history at the University of Kent, before becoming a studio manager’s assistant at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield. She began writing erotic stories in 2009 when she posted ‘Twilight’ fan fiction online. Originally titled “Master of the Universe” under the pen name Snowqueen’s Icedragon, the stories featured Twilight characters Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. As the stories became more erotic James
2 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2
removed the work from fan fiction sites and published them on her own website. These stories became ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and sequels ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ and ‘Fifty Shades Freed’, an erotic trilogy about a female college graduate and a billionaire businessman featuring bondage, dominance and a spot of sadism/masochism. Fifty Shades of Grey’ was first released as an e-book and print-on-demand paperback in May 2011 by The Writers’ Coffee Shop, an Australian virtual publisher. James went on to self-publish the book on Kindle Direct Publishing, a self-publishing business run by Amazon with e-books being sold for reading on Kindles. It was a strategy that worked – readers that might have been embarrassed to be seen with a ‘racy’ novel, bought it online and read it electronically. Paperback versions of the book only hit the shelves in April after the ‘Fifty Shades’ trilogy was the subject of a bidding war and James signed a seven-figure deal with Vintage books, part of Random House. The novel remains more popular as e-book than a hard copy; the Kindle edition of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ is currently outselling the print book at a rate of more than two to one. James has also been paid £3.2million from Universal/Focus Features for the film rights to the ‘Fifty Shades’ trilogy.

he Affordable Art Fair’s formula is simple yet unique: a relaxed, inspiring environment and lots of good quality contemporary art. In 1999 when Will Ramsay founded the fair in London, he transformed the model of the traditional art fair with his fun and friendly approach. By introducing a price ceiling and the compulsory labelling of artwork, customers were able to see exactly what they could afford. His aim was to make contemporary art accessible to everyone, and to show you don’t need to be an art expert or a millionaire to enjoy and buy art. Since its launch, the Affordable Art Fair has grown globally and now hosts 17 fairs in 14 cities across four continents. Across the world over one million people have visited an Affordable Art Fair, buying over £155 million of art, and it all started right here in London! This Autumn, the Affordable Art Fair returns to London with two separate events showcasing contemporary collections from household names and some of the best emerging talent, all priced from £40 to £4,000, set in the scenic surroundings of Battersea Park and Hampstead Heath. At both Battersea and Hampstead there will be over 100 exhibiting galleries, and the most of the galleries will be different at each fair, with different artwork on display. Whilst the majority are from the UK, there are also a number of international galleries participating.

Artwork for sale includes paintings, photography, prints and sculptures, meaning there really is something to suit every taste. Founder of the Affordable Art Fair, Will Ramsay, comments, “At each fair we try and make the experience exciting, captivating and above all, fun, for our visitors. We want them to discover art they love and inspire confidence in them so they leave with something that resonates with them personally, that hasn’t emptied their pockets. We want people to lose themselves in the galleries, ask questions and learn about art, and even try their hand at producing their own works of art at one of our many workshops.” Whether you are a young professional on the hunt for your first piece of art, a seasoned collector out to spot the next big thing, a student seeking inspiration, or family looking for a fun day out, the Affordable Art Fair has something for everyone to do and see!

Valentina was founded in East Sheen in 1991 where today, the Zoccola and Arcari families share their life-long passion for food and wine… “Our families hail from Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, a small village near Monte Cassino, southeast of Rome, where we have farmed the land for generations. We still return home annually to harvest olives from the family grove for our own-label olive oil, and source other fresh ingredients from the native soil. Most of our vast range of products – be it in the delicatessens or the restaurants – are, born of tradition and original skills, directly from our humble beginnings in the Italian countryside. “Valentina is our way of bringing an authentic taste of Italy to the UK – to serve recipe dishes in our restaurants that have been handed down through the families.” Valentina, a name shared with the daughter of one of the founding families, is now a thriving business. The original delicatessen and restaurant in Sheen, owned and run by the Zoccola and Arcari families has been joined by sister branches in Putney, Sevenoaks and Notting Hill Gate and now Weybridge. Valentina Weybridge plans to open mid September. Normal opening hours will be Monday to Saturday, 8am-11pm and Sunday, 8.30am to 11pm. The store is located at 10-12 High Street, Weybridge, KT13 8AB.

THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF
GUILDFORD
CASTLE Aerial view of Guildford tower
The name comes from the first sighting of the Ford that allowed carts and horses to cross the River Wey. The Saxons settled in England around 490 AD, they had spent many decades plundering the churches and villages abandoned by the former Roman occupiers, who left in 410 AD. BY SEAN BORU

W
hen they came upon the ford they noticed that the sand along the banks of the river were a golden colour, and so they named the estate Golden (Geld)-Ford. By the time the Normans came in 1066 it was a thriving town of military and commercial importance, it is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Gyldeford. It was also the site of the Royal Mint, and had been since 978. The Saxons had realised that it was a strategic position to defend against invaders, and they built a stockade there around 750 AD which developed into a castle, albeit a crudely built one. William the Conqueror also knew this, and within a few years of the invasion in 1066 he had completely rebuilt it into a strong castle which still exists today. The castle that William had built was a Motte and Bailey type, this was basically a main building surrounded by a ditch with a cross over bridge, not necessarily a moveable bridge either. The main purpose of the ditch would have been to breed fish such as perch, carp and pike to feed the lord of the manor. The soil from the ditch was used to elevate the area that the main building or keep would stand on; this was the Motte.

In between the ditch and the keep was an area that contained a farm surrounded by a wooden fence for extra protection, this was the Bailey. Here you would find farm animals such as chickens, pigs, horses, cows, ducks and geese. The buildings would house servants who served the farm and the castle; they included a blacksmith, dress makers, carpenters and labourers. It was a private village within an administrative shire or district. When the Domesday Book was commissioned it was known that the basic worth of all land, chattels and goods in the whole of the U.K. was around £10,000 which even in those dark days wasn’t a king’s ransom. King William passed 10 basic laws and broke the country up into shires, districts and hundreds, he then ordered the new lords of these areas to build castles for two purposes, firstly to increase he value of the country’s asserts, and secondly to let the conquered Saxons know who was boss. Guildford Castle was the only one built in Surrey at that time. During the reign of Henry II (1154-89) the wooden keep was taken down and a stone one replaced it, this became a county gaol, and the lord’s rooms were moved to a huge mansion house built in the area of the bailey. This was the most luxurious royal lodge in the U.K.
Abbots Hospital Early 1900s
Guildford High Street Early 1900S
H I S TO RY When Henry III came to the throne in 1216 after King John died, he spent a fortune on the mansion house and turned it into a royal palace, in 1251 a fire destroyed much of the palace, but Henry loved the place so much he visited the still smouldering ruins and order a refit. He poured a fortune into the Queens and the Royal chapels. Then he did something quite extraordinary, he commissioned a special throne style chair to be placed in the main hall, on the opposite side of the room he had a painting done of a bible scene, it was the story of Dives and Lazarus; a parable told by Jesus. It was a story that encouraged charity between the wealthy and the poor. No doubt it kept the king humble, and gave him some relief from the guilt of spending so much money on luxuries. The throne itself was carved from Oak and depicted animals that roamed the local woods, the theme was to celebrate his hunting skills and his love of hunting. This was later used by future kings as a hunting lodge, but after Henry III died in 1272 his successor lost interest in it. King Richard I of England was known as `The `Lionheart`, on succeeding to the throne he threw his heart into the Crusades even more, and so the palace was left unattended and soon fell into ruins. The castle lay in ruins until a local merchant named Francis Carter was granted it by the crown estates in 1611, he intended to do it up and live in it. However, it all proved too little too late and the costs spiralled out of control. King James I was on the throne and the constant wars with France, Spain and Holland took its toll on British businesses. By 1630 Francis was stripping the castle of building materials to sell and meet his debts. The floors and roof finally came off, and the whole inner skin of the castle was open to the elements. For just over 200 years the weather beaten building stood its ground against the spring rains, the summer heat and the cold chilled winds and snow of winter. In 1813 the Carter family sold the estate to the Duke of Norfolk, he didn’t spend any time there or any money on it. On inheriting the estate his son sold it to Lord Grantley in 1843. His son in succession then sold it to the local council in 1886. Queen Victoria had encouraged the local council to purchase the building and turn it into a public park in 1885. Today the castle is open to the public with wonderful grounds and walkways, a museum and the newly restored tower.

THE HISTORY OF
GREAT FOSTERS
Within Egham, Great Fosters is by far the finest relic of antiquity of the parish and is considered as ranking fifth within the county of Surrey as a specimen of domestic architecture being only surpassed by Sutton, Loseley, Ham and Beddington. During the Middle Ages, the immediate vicinity of Great Fosters was known as the manor of Imworth and there is evidence that the de Imworth Family lived here in 1224. More than one seventeenth century record describes it as “Imworths alias Fosters” The earliest mention of the site as Fosters is in the court rolls of Thorpe dated 1521. Describing boundaries on the Egham side of the parish, it refers to ”lands on the west called Fosters”. In the survey conducted at the behest of King Edward VI, Hugh Warham was in possession of the “tenement, formerly Adam de Foster’s”. Hugh Warham was knighted in 1523 and married a co-heiress to the Brocas family. He was the youngest brother of Archbishop Wareham and a monument to his memory lies in Croydon Parish Church. Sir Hugh Wareham’s son, William, knighted in 1553 on the coronation of Mary, was in possession of the estate by 1555. We can safely assume, he was not of the reformed faith and it is considered that he was responsible for the building of the core of the present house, then known as Fosters. We can speculate the original Manor of Imworth therefore was on the site of Fosters and was enclosed by the Saxon moat, which dates around 500 AD and still surrounds Great Fosters 4 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2
Unfortunately, it would appear that William fell into money problems with a debt owing to Jasper Palmer, a Goldsmith or moneylender who acquired a controlling interest in Sir William’s property. To recoup the money, Jasper Palmer sold the estate to a John Ailworth who sold it in 1565, presumably at great profit to Thomas Bowtell. Intrigue was not to finish there, as Thomas Bowtell’s son Jeremy seems to have been denied his inheritance by a certain Edward Owen, a freeman of the Broderer’s Company of London, who married Jeremy Bowtell’s sister. He appears to have been a very avaricious, devious and unpleasant brotherin- law, for, not content with gaining possession of his wife’s inheritance, he succeeded in terrifying both Jeremy and his mother in law out of theirs. He gained complete control of the property, which encompassed a large area surrounding Great Fosters and then proceeded to divide it. The ownership of the house is apparent, although who inhabited the house, its purpose and tenancy are somewhat unsure and inconclusive; however there is much evidence of Royal residence, usage or patronage. It is documented that Henry VIII used the house as a hunting lodge, he sent his daughter Elizabeth here and that she used the house herself as a
H I S TO RY
hunting lodge. In confirmation of this, above the main porch there is an original royal crest of Queen Elizabeth I with the date 1598, which indicates that this property had serious royal connections. This is compounded with the ornate ceiling decorations, particularly in The Anne Boleyn Room, encompassing royal ensignia, Anne Boleyn’s personal crests.
Mary Watson became the owner of Fosters; she married Sir Anthony Mayne, knighted by James 1 at Basing in 1609. From the appearance of the Tudor rose and crown with his initials, Mayne was undoubtedly part of the royal household. He too, had his misfortune, having “contributed” to a forced loan to Charles 1st in 1625.
In The Drawing Room, (now The Tapestry Room there are devices of The Earl of Northumberland in the shape of the Percy’s silver boar, collared and chained and the crown key and scimitar would indicate connections with Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, nick-named The Wizard Earl because of his keen interest in alchemy and astrology.
How the next owner, Sir John Doderidge, a judge, came to Great Fosters, is not clear, except that there was a professional association with Sir John Denham. As a practising lawyer, he worked amongst others, for Sir Walter Raleigh before becoming Solicitor General to King James 1 and being raised to the King’s Bench. Fuller wrote of Doderidge in his “Worthies” - “It is difficult to say whether Sir John was better artist, divine, devil or canon lawyer”. He was nicknamed “The Sleeping Judge” because he always considered his cases with his eyes shut.
After the division of the estate, the manor of Imworth/Fosters was sold to Joseph Wright who sold it on to Sir John Denham, the judge in 1604. At this stage, the house was greatly re-modelled and became the house it is today. References to Sir John Thynne, an Ancestor of the Marquis of Bath, are made on the family tree at Longleat recording his death in 1608 and giving his residence as Great Fosters. However, there are no local records to that effect; perhaps he was a tenant or guest at the house at that time.
It is opined that the sundial in the garden, was obtained by Sir John, who was one of the first members of The Society of Antiquaries and who took great interest in Heraldry and Astronomy. Although other historians theorise that it may have been a donation by Sir Francis Drake, as well as its similarity to another at Westwood, Bradford on Avon, suggests that it may well have been created by Nicholas Stone, the elder. O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2 4 1
H I S TO RY
The Armillary at the head of the rare oak stairwell is also considered to have been placed there by Sir John and the central sphere in the original Drawing Room (now The Tapestry Room) although the dated plasterworks state 1602, which evidently does not support this theory. Sir John Doderidge died at Fosters on 13th September 1628, his will implies that Fosters had already been passed to his wife Dorothy as she lived there for some years after. In his will, there are three excerpts of interest, “to his beloved wife” he left the furniture and plate “in the house or tenement called forsters”. He left £5.00 to the poor of Egham and to Trinity College Cambridge, “to which society I have been much beholden, two greate gloabes which are in the Gallery in my house of forsters”. Dame Anne lived there until 1631. Great Fosters was then owned by Thomas Bennett, who is responsible for the building of the stables around 1635. Over the central pediment may still be seen “B.T.M.” Thomas and Mary Bennett. However his ownership was short lived and Great Fosters was sold to Robert Foster, Sergeant at Law. He was knighted in 1640. Sir Robert followed the king on his retreat to Oxford leaving his wife, five children and twelve servants at Egham. The house was frequently used and visited by Parliamentary soldiers in search of billets and plunder for which she received no payment, only further dues. She was eventually forced to leave Egham for London. After the King’s death, Sir Robert returned to Great Fosters with his wife in 1649. At the Restoration, Sir Robert came into his own again and was made Chief Justice of the King’s Bench on 21st October 1660. He did not, however, live long enough to enjoy his new dignity and died at “great fosters on 4th October 1663. Again, philanthropically, he willed £5.00 to the poor of Egham, £2.00 to the poor of Thorpe and £10.00 to his “old servant, Will Born”. The house had previously been settled upon his heir Thomas, the second
4 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2
son who was born in 1617, the first son, Robert having died in the first year of his life. Although knighted, Thomas’ life was uneventful, he had two daughters and two sons and died in 1685. Thomas, the second son, married a Margaret Warren who had his daughter – Margaret. However, both his two sons predeceased him, leaving no male issue. A wrangle ensued but resulted in Margaret having the right to live at Great Fosters for her lifetime but that it would revert to the two daughters on her death. The two sisters sold the reversion rights to Edward Woodward for £1.944.00. He had the poorer deal, since Margaret was a difficult tenant and spent next to nothing on the house, giving him all the trouble she could during her tenure. Despite court actions against Margaret for neglect of the house, Edward Woodward never was to be resident of his seat, Margaret outliving him and her own daughter. Margaret however sublet the property to Sir Charles Orby, who again cared little for its condition. For his services to the Stuarts in exile, he was created a Baronet in 1715. Both Charles and his brother Thomas were Jacobites and after the rising in 1715, Great Fosters was searched for horses and arms. The brothers were described as “Papists and nonjurors, and disloyal and disaffected persons aiding and abetting in ye said rebellion.” Sir Charles died in 1716 and Thomas died in 1723 approximately the same time as Margaret Foster. Edward Woodward’s widow came to Great Fosters on the demise of Margaret, she was the daughter of the family Knight of Chawton and was simply known as Madam Knight. She remarried a few years after her husband’s death and her husband, Bulstrode Peachey also took the name Knight. As a childless widow, Madam Knight died in 1736, her husband pre-deceasing her in 1734. Great Fosters then passed to a distant cousin Thomas Brodnax, alias May, alias Knight, whose son sold it to Richard Brown in 1786. He remained here until 1818 when it was sold to a Dr Furnivall.
H I S TO RY
Dr Furnivall had two other partners, one of whom was Sir John Chapman, one of the 300 founder members of The Royal College of Surgeons. Prior to the formation of this college, surgeons belonged to the Guild of Barbers and Surgeons. Sir John was one of “the modern thinkers”, who believed that mental illness was not solely related to physical illness. No doubt his methods of treatment for mental illness were therefore quite revolutionary. Great Fosters thus became a lunatic asylum and despite this radical thinking he was described in local documentation as “Doctor to the Poor” in Windsor. It is believed, although not confirmed by Windsor Castle records, that Great Fosters was where King George III was housed when he was being treated for his insanity. Sir John’s knighthood was bestowed on him for his “Services to the Crown” and later Sir John became Mayor of Windsor. He retired in 1846. On Dr Furnivall’s death, his children sold Great Fosters to Colonel Halkett, a Baron of the Kingdom of Hanover who expended large quantities of money on its repair. His wife Baroness Halkett was the Lady in Waiting to Queen Alexandra. When Colonel Halkett died in 1880 The Baroness inherited the property, but a protracted sale of the house from 1902 to 1910 to the Earl of Dudley allowed the building to lapse once more into neglect and it was unoccupied for some years. The second major refurbishment took place under the Hon Gerald Samuel Montagu, the younger brother of the second Lord Swaythling, who bought Great Fosters in 1918. The Hon Gerald Montagu became involved in the post-war boom of poultry production and traded as The Black Lake Poultry Farm with the telegraphic address “Eggs Egham”. It was promoted as Britain’s most up-to-date poultry farm and specialist breeder of white leghorns and white wyandottes. To add to the menagerie, Clumber spaniels were also bred by a Mr Cope at Great Fosters and included some prominent winners including Crufts Breed Champions. It was at
this stage that the architect W H Romaine-Walker was commissioned to adapt the house into the building, which largely survives today. Romaine-Walker started his practice in the 1880s, specialising in country houses and the restoration and elaboration of parish churches, though perhaps he is best known for his work on the Tate Gallery in the 1930s. He was renowned not only for his neo-Elizabethan pastiche architecture, but also for his contemporary garden designs. By the time he was commissioned at Great Fosters in 1918, his experience with restoration and pastiche Elizabethan design was extensive. Sir Harold Sutcliffe bought Great Fosters in 1930 and with careful restoration and additions; this noble house became a hotel. In 1931, the then resident director, Major W F Jefferys was quoted as complaining that the Dining Room was totally inadequate to deal with the number of customers. Thus, at a cost of £4000.00, the Elizabethan Tithe Barn was re-erected at Great Fosters having been moved from Ewell Manor. Great Fosters gained a reputation as a premier country hotel which was reinforced in May 1931 when Queen Mary visited and subsequently when on 19th June, the Ascot Ball was held at the hotel in the presence of the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of York. It is interesting to note that the Sutcliffe family have owned the hotel for longer than any other family in its history and are most concerned that the hotel should remain within the family for many years to come. Keeping things green, the Red Label collection was inspired by British royal gardens which became clear with Charlotte Free debuting an avantgarde flower headpiece at the start of the show. From Renaissance style to the Victorian era, the garden has catered bowling to tennis, picnics to weddings and even the humble garden party, which Westwood took as inspiration for her micro checks, fine wools, lily pad fluid jersey, metallics and regal midnight blues. Headpieces were a real focus, from simple straw hats to flower garlands and printed silk head-scarves, whilst point toe heels and boots were a footwear feature point. Models sauntered down the runway with bright painted faces, heavy blue eyelids and tight 50s curls in true Westwood style. As the show drew to a close, it was sad to see the end of the luxurious fabrics and sequinned wonders, but we knew something was around the corner. The lady herself skipped onto the catwalk with Alice Dellal and Charlotte Free in toe draped in rich bronze opening out a sign saying ‘Climate Revolution’.

Lady Gaga opens Philip Treacy’s show Milliner Philip Treacy marked his return London Fashion Week with a show opened by Lady Gaga and featuring only black models. Treacy, the designer whose hat caused a stir at last year’s royal wedding, was used the Royal Courts of Justice for what was his first show in the capital in a decade. Gaga was on hand to open proceedings – although she surprisingly declined to sing at the event. Instead she took to the catwalk in a pair of towering platforms by Alexander McQueen and a pink flowing gown which covered her face, declaring Treacy to be ‘the greatest milliner in the world’. The show paid tribute to Michael Jackson, with one hat featuring a mini fairground based on the late singer’s Neverland ranch. Featuring models Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek and singer Grace Jones, all models on the catwalk wore items from Jackson’s wardrobe teamed with a Treacy hat. Christopher Kane Day 4 of London Fashion Week, saw one of the most high profile designers take to the spotlight to present his Spring / Summer 2013 offering. The Central Saint Martin’s graduate is known for his attention to detail in the form of embellishment which tends to really step outside of the fashion box, pushing boundaries in a forward thinking, yet somewhat sinister, way. The show set up, portrayed this, rebuffing all the fashion week front row nonsense, with a super long holographic catwalk with only one single row.
Beginning on white (like so many of the Spring / Summer 2013 collections this London Fashion Week), focus lay quite clearly on texture and shape, with zips, cut outs, tailoring and detail. Moving on to powder pinks and neon yellows, in super simple and minimalist shapes, there was a focus on origami style fold-over texture. Then came the detail; ruffled modern textures made an interesting highlight alongside embellished lace and sheer organzas. Stand outs for me included the perspex style ruffles in pastel shades and ultra modern embellishments. Mulberry With a star-studded front row and clothes inspired by an English garden. Eleven Mulberry handbags lined the floor in front of the company’s celebrity front row at Claridge’s. There were fashion show regulars including Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo.Jessica Ennis was there too, sporting a Bayswater bag. They can usually be found wearing tight restrictive corsets for their roles in hit BBC show Downton Abbey. But Joanne Froggatt and Elizabeth McGovern opted for something more comfortable as they made an appearance at the Mulberry show. The pair led the way for famous faces attending the highly-anticipated show. With all the front-row attention Emma Hill’s collection had to compete, but it did by lining the way into Claridge’s with acid pastel garden gnomes and garlanding the catwalk with climbing roses: the show was themed around an English garden. From racy, oversized biker jackets to staid long peacoats

via side-pleated skirts and gardening-unsuitable booties, most everything featured kooky floral or gecko motifs. Pleated-at-the-neck shirts in apricot and sunflower yellow (motif-free) were demure yet devastating, there was a beautiful Windsor-collar gecko jacquard suit, and a three-year old poodle named Max made his London fashion week debut wearing a matching jacquard ‘dog peacoat’. Jasper Conran Jasper Conran lit up London Fashion Week with a tropical inspired show, combining floral patterns and vibrant colours. The show gave a hint of Spring as he paraded his multi-coloured creations down the runway amongst neon lights and a catwalk made to look like grass. Walking barefoot, models sported the light-hearted creations which came in summery shades of orange and pink, with bold bright patterns and vibrant accessories. Conran revealed that he drew inspiration for his latest collection from cowboy boots and other aspects of American culture. I’ve done denim for the first time on the catwalk, so it starts quite sort of blues and whites and silvers. And then it explodes,’ the designer told Reuters. Everything has a reference back to Americana, so it’s all logically done, with a healthy dose of illogicality’ he added. Conran showed his playful side during the show, which was attended by the likes of TV presenter Christine Bleakley Jodie Kidd and Lady Victoria Hervey. House of Holland The catwalk was House of Holland was not in the usual setting, Holland’s collection was held in a car park transforming it into a clubbing paradise. Titled, ‘Buzz Kill’ the collection was full of vibrancy and full of fun, Cue the cropped jacquard trousers, embellished beanies, nineties grunge dress, oversized plaid shirts and bomber jackets – this collection did not stop giving. While most designers would make do with just one big name,

the 29-year-old fashionista had his front row graced by the likes of Kelly Osbourne, Alexa Chung, Nicola Roberts, Pixie Geldof and Poppy Delevingne. Known for his bold, colourful and irreverent pieces, the designer recently said: ‘I design with a London girl’s aesthetic in mind and love to see girls wearing my designs in their own unique way”. John Rocha John Rocha proved his fashion idol status with his new Spring/Summer 2013 collection. The designer unveiled an ultra-feminine range that featured frills, demi-couture textures and layers of organza in his signature voluminous style. Rocha has stuck to his forte of creating ladylike designs, making his garments resemble a beautiful garden of pale lavenders, mints, and lemons. He also offered contrast in the form of gun metal, champagne, and black and white ensembles in an array of luxurious fabrics. He played with proportions and experimented with strips of frilled cotton lace without moving too far from his trusty colour palette. To complement the whimsical theme, models took to the catwalk in large, matching cloud-like hats sculpted from folds of organza. Catwalk designers for Spring/Summer 2013 Collections also included David Koma, Fred Butler, Issa London, Louise Gray, Matthew Williamson, Nicole Farhi, Osman, Paul Smith and Temperley London. New exhibitors for SS13 include: Archibald Optics, Carla Fernandez, Danielle Romeril, E.Tautz (Womenswear), Hemyca, Honest By, Imogen Belfield, Jerome Allen Lorico, Loup Noir, Marques ‘Almeida, Mich Dulce, Modern Love, Negarin, Paper London, Rosantica, Richard Braqo, Sophia Webster, White Tent and Willow. The newly renovated West Wing housed a brand new dedicated shoe collective showcasing a cross section of brands including Cordwainers graduate Joanne Stoker, French Sole, architectural shoe designer Julian Hakes and Kat Maconie; the eco sustainable platform Estethica; BFC Rock Vault sponsored by International Palladium Board and the new buyer’s liaison point supported by Samsung. This season’s Fashion Forward is sponsored by eBay Fashion and the Mayor of London, supporting Henry Holland, Louise Gray and Mary Katrantzou. In a first for London Fashion Week, Jonathan Saunders has worked with the BFC to create bespoke visual event branding and marketing materials that was used across London Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer 2013 season – based on an adapted version of his ombre print from Resort 2013. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe, with international press attending from 42 countries. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE A WOMAN WHO’S PAWNED! Lipstick on his collar? A text message obviously not meant for you? Or perhaps your husband has a new found hobby or dress sense – sound familiar? Hopefully not as it could be the red alert that signals he’s having an affair.

ess Contomichalos chats to pawnbroker James Constantinou, Managing Director of Prestige Pawnbrokers, Weybridge and finds out how one ‘woman scorned’ managed to teach her cheating husband a lesson with a little help from some of her valuables!
With the pawn business booming, it’s been a good year for Prestige Pawnbrokers, Weybridge. ‘We’ve had a fantastic amount of interest and great business. The pawn industry has become hot media property and as a result we’ve attracted attention from The Daily Mail, The One Show and most recently You magazine. We’ve been inundated with fabulous assets and some of the stories behind the reasons for pawning are incredible!’ says James. But, perhaps one of the most controversial he’s had so far this year, is the tale of 40 year old Chantal Meyer. ‘Chantal came to me with a Cartier watch and a Rolex watch, she was quite emotional and it transpired that she wanted some of her own money so that she could hire a private detective!’ explains

James. Chantal soon confided that she was convinced her husband was having an affair and wanted him tracked as soon as possible. ‘Chantal had a lot at stake, not just her dignity but also a pretty hefty divorce settlement if she could prove she was right. Being quite a canny woman, she used the watches as they were gifts from her husband, and because of the state of their marriage; they no longer held any sentimental value for her. Basically, she was prepared to give them up, should that situation arise’, says James. Sadly for Chantal, she was given all the proof she needed to file for divorce and as a direct result of the circumstances and the children involved, Chantal is now pretty much set up for life. Whilst she is happy to get her watches back with the money she has acquired, she doesn’t really want to hold onto them. ‘Chantal has already asked me if I am interested in buying them, which is something my business can accommodate’ says James. So, whilst there is no real happy ending for Chantal at the moment, at least she’s walked away with her pride intact, money in the bank and a couple of watches she can sell if she wants to! It is worth remembering that if a situation arises and you need some money fast, have a look at your assets and see if they can help make you instantly cash rich. A WAVE OF RELAXATION F
ew people relish the thought of a trip to the dentist, the high pitched sound of the drill alone is enough to put off even the brave! Walk into Wave Dental Spa and you could be forgiven for not even realising you are in a dental practice. With spa music playing in the background, the scent of aromatherapy oils in the background and an offer of a cappuccino, it doesn’t take long to realise that your experience at Wave is going to be a relaxing one. After a brief tour of the high-tech treatment rooms you realise the care runs more than skin deep. We spoke to Dr Paula Brennan who launched Wave Dental Spa earlier this year. She stresses that the success of Wave is about far more than rolling out the red carpet. “We can combine treatments and therapies you might not expect to find at a dentist but which compliment each other perfectly. For example, teeth whitening and a manicure – which is very popular before a wedding. We have invested in some amazing alternatives to traditional dental techniques. Many patients hate the sound and discomfort of a dental drill so we became one of the few practices in the Uk to a offer a dental laser called Waterlase”. Dr Brennan glides a space-age looking silver machine across the room. “I believe in a holistic approach to dentistry and we avoid amalgam and remain mercury free. Every patient receives as much choice as possible and I adopt a

conservative approach to treatment. If pain relief is needed, patients often choose ‘The Wand’, which delivers a painless, controlled delivery of anaesthetic directly to your tooth. It gets rid of the bee sting effect and you can avoid a swollen lip or face. Handy if you have a meeting straight after an appointment” Unconventional it may be but Wave Dental Spa’s philosophy is going down a treat with both customers and colleagues alike. With it’s vaulted ceilings and double height glass, Wave must be one of the few practices in the country where you can lie back while gazing at a blue sky. It is a space which manages to blend high technology with a tranquil atmosphere.

PATIENT TESTIMONIAL Anita Hill from Surrey told us that she first went into Wave a few months ago for a scale and polish. “Although I really didn’t feel like I was at the dentist, I was still very nervous. Every single time I have had my teeth cleaned in the past it has been downright painful! Half an hour later my teeth were clean and.. Absolutely no pain at all! It made me relaxed enough to have a chat about my teeth ‘issues’. I had a large gap between my front two teeth which had composite fillings to make the gap a little smaller. This was done several years ago and was done very badly. My teeth were also quite yellowish. If a camera looked in my direction, my mouth remained firmly closed giving me a grimace more than a smile. I was recommended to use ‘Enlighten’, the only teeth whitening system in the world to guarantee Vita shade B1 which is really white! Also to remove my dreaded gap, Wave suggested four veneers on my front teeth. Wave offer interest free credit which made the treatment affordable for me.
nt Before treatme
After treatm ent
After just two weeks my teeth were so much whiter! I then had a diagnostic wax up, this sounds very technical but basically a model was made of my upper teeth from white wax. From this some temporary veneers were made. I wore the temporary ones for two weeks so that I could get used to the feel and look of my new teeth. I then had the permanent hand made, porcelain veneers put on. All pain free and I am so delighted with the results. Thank you to all at Wave Dental Spa for allowing me to smile with confidence”

Dr Peter Forrester Advocate of INTRAcel
A NEW ERA
IN FACIAL REJUVENATION Providing an effective and non-surgical way to reduce wrinkles and tighten facial skin is one of the greatest challenges in cosmetic medicine.
D
r Peter Forrester has until now remained sceptical about the ability of existing treatments to fully meet this challenge. However, with INTRAcel he has found a way that really does work to tighten the previously difficult areas of jowls, neck, upper cheeks and lower eyelids.
specific skin layers can be selectively targeted with greater RF energy levels whilst leaving the outer skin undamaged, resulting in minimal downtime and a quick recovery. This is unlike laser treatments where the energy is delivered from the surface causing significant damage to the epidermis resulting in longer healing and downtime.
INTRAcel is a new device that cleverly combines two well-established techniques, micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. After the application of local anaesthetic cream, a grid of microneedles punctures the surface of the skin and delivers short burst of RF energy into the deeper layers.
A treatment session will usually take two hours including the time for the anaesthetic cream to take full effect. The treated skin will be a little red for 1-2 days but can be concealed with make-up.
Much of the age-related changes in skin result from the reduction in both quantity and quality of essential structural proteins, collagen and elastin. RF energy has been shown to stimulate the growth of fibroblast cells. These are the source of collagen and elastin, the building blocks of youthful and healthy skin. INTRAcel’s micro-needles are insulated right up to the tip and can operate at a variable depth. This means that
A toned and tightened effect will be noticeable immediately but the full effects will develop over subsequent weeks. A course of up to 3 treatments at 4-6 week intervals may be indicated following which improvements will continue to develop for up to a year as new collagen develops. Dr Forrester is excited about the arrival of INTRAcel and believes that this heralds a new era in facial rejuvenation.
INTRAcel can: Improve the tone and texture of skin, producing a smoother and younger appearance. Tighten the skin to reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines Improve stretch marks and scarring Improve acne scarring

I THINK I’VE FOUND A LUMP IN MY BREAST...
WHAT DO I DO? It is completely understandable that you might worry about the possibility of breast cancer if you find a lump, but remember; most lumps are not cancer. The most likely cause for a lump depends on your age.
Women from 20s to 30s In women from 20 to 30 a definite lump is most likely to be a fibroadenoma. These are benign lumps that can sometimes be painful or enlarge but they are not cancerous and do not turn cancerous.
Women between 40s and 50s Between 40 and 50 breast cysts becom more common. These are also entirely benign. They are collections of fluid within the breast and although they can also be painful they are not dangerous.
Women aged 30 and onwards From the age of 30 onwards the gland tissue in the breast changes and it becomes more fibrous and nodular. The way the breast feels has been described as like a scaled down packet of frozen peas and occasionally, in just the same way that frozen peas can stick together to form a clump, so breast tissue can “stick together” to form definite nodular areas. These areas are also often tender but, once again, are not a sign of cancer. 5 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2
The rate of breast cancer begins to rise after the age of 40 and increases with age. Of course, breast cancer can occur at any age and I have seen cases in women as young as 19 and in their early 20s, but they are very, very rare. The important message is, if you notice a change in your breast please get it checked. Let’s go through what you need to do. The first thing to do is to see your GP and explain what you have noticed. They will examine you and in some cases may suggest a further check at a different time of your menstrual cycle. Some of the nodular areas can change with the cycle and this is actually a reassuring sign. If a discrete nodular area persists or your GP finds a definite lump, or is unsure, they will refer you to a breast clinic for a full assessment by the breast team. The team should consist of several consultants working together, and includes a surgeon a radiologist and a pathologist. The investigation of any breast problem revolves around, what is
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y
called, the triple assessment. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle; pieces (of information) are collected and put together until the whole picture (the diagnosis) becomes clear. Indeed, this is often termed “the diagnostic jigsaw”. In some cases only 2 pieces may be needed, in others 4, but 3 (the triple assessment) is most common. Let’s have a look at what the pieces are. The first specialist you meet will often be the breast surgeon. They will ask questions about your symptoms (called taking your “history”). They will also ask about previous medical problems and your family history. They will then examine both breasts. How the breast feels when it is examined is the first part of the jigsaw. If there is a definite area of change then a fine needle aspiration may be carried out. This test uses a normal sized syringe and needle. The needle is placed into the area of the breast and “jiggled” so that a small amount of material is sucked into the syringe. This is sent away to be looked at under the microscope. More commonly now a test known as a core biopsy is done. A core biopsy takes a core of breast tissue about 1.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The core biopsy is carried out by first putting some local anaesthetic into the skin of the breast. Once this has worked (it is quite quick) a small nick is made in the skin to allow the core biopsy needle, attached to the biopsy “gun”, to be placed into the breast. When the “gun” is “fired” (it is painless, but does make a noise rather like a large stapler) the needle takes the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw. The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast. In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this. In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an
ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw. If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma. What if the pieces don’t quite fit and the picture (diagnosis) is not initially obvious (the triple assessment is then said to be discordant)? For example, in a 50 year old lady a lump may feel like a benign nodular area but look odd on an ultrasound with a normal mammogram. In this case another piece of the jigsaw may be needed, such as an MRI scan or even, occasionally an operation to remove an area for full examination under the microscope. An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thoroughly investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

Darcey Bussell
Strictly Come Dancing’s new judge and the face of Sanctuary Spa Active Reverse skincare.
Q: Describe your daily beauty routine... A: In the morning I fully cleanse and follow with an exfoliator. I then apply Sanctuary Active Reverse Power Peptide Serum, followed by the Sanctuary Active Reverse Peptide Protect Day Cream SPF20, both of which hydrate and protect my skin. The only time I wear full make-up is in the evenings. Q: What are your must-have skincare products? A: I get quite dehydrated so I use a facial oil at night as it hydrates my skin leaving it feeling fresh when I wake up. Q: What are your essential cosmetics? A: After growing up in the theatre I enjoy not having to wear make-up any more but when I do my essentials are Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser SPF20, which I dab onto my cheekbones as a highlighter; Benefit Ooh La Lift under-eye brightener, and MAC Bronzing Powder for evenings. Q: What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without? A: Maybelline Falsies Mascara. I don’t wear make-up every day but I do try to apply mascara daily. I have mascaras all over the place - in my handbags, car there’s always one to hand! Q: What’s your favourite feature to accentuate if you’re glamming up? A: My lips. If I’m dressing up I’ll use a fab lipstick, like MAC Spice. Q: What’s your best bit of beauty advice? A: To keep your eyes looking open and big, never bring the eyeliner to the end of the eye, always lift it slightly at the end. I also apply my blush higher than my cheek bones to accentuate them. Q: How do you like to pamper yourself? A: I like to put on a face mask and take time out. My new favourite is the Sanctuary Active Reverse 30 Day Thermal Transformation Mask; I apply it and then relax as it warms up on my skin. Sanctuary Active Reverse Peptide Protect Day Cream SPF20, £20

Alesha Dixon
Britain’s Got Talent judge and face of Impulse Sweet Smile bodyspray. Q: Describe your daily beauty routine... A: It’s minimal - shower, moisturising cream, a bit of mascara, bit of lip gloss, top knot in my hair and I’m good to go. A spritz of Impulse is great for a fragrance boost when I’m on the move all day. It’s very different when I’m working - it can take two hours but when I’m getting ready myself it’s more like 20 minutes flat. Q: What are your must-have skincare products? A: At the moment, I’m using Sisley. It’s a real treat but you only get one face and one thing I’m not ashamed to admit I spend a bit of money on is face cream. On my body I either use cocoa butter or coconut oil to keep my skin soft. Q: What are your essential cosmetics? A: I love Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream - it’s a classic. It doesn’t matter how many lip balms I try I always end up going back to that. MAC Zoom Lash mascara is brilliant. Q: What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without? A: My number one is coconut oil. It’s just really natural and a real multi-tasking product for skin and hair. Q: What’s your favourite feature to accentuate if you’re glamming up? A: I love nails - I even co-ordinate my polish to my outfit! When my stylist recommends things for me to wear, she’ll add a little note recommending what nail colour to wear. Attention to detail really makes a difference. Q: What’s your best bit of beauty advice? A: I think water is your best friend. If you drink at least two litres a day it just helps keep your skin looking really lovely. I swear by it, and green tea as well. I also use ice under my eyes to reduce puffiness. Q: How do you like to pamper yourself? A: I like to put a treatment on my hair. Again, I’d probably use my trusty coconut oil or Moroccanoil. After Britain’s Got Talent, I had so many things done to my nails, they were so weak, so I try to do a mini treatment on my nails most nights.

Kimberly Wyatt
Got to Dance judge and BM Beauty make-up founder. Q: Describe your daily beauty routine A: I have a shower, exfoliate with natural Love the Planet Peppermint Sugar Scrub, wash my hair with LA Science Shampoo then I will add some Macadamia Natural Oil or Moroccanoil to my hair afterwards as I love natural products. Q: What are your must-have skincare products? A: After moisturising, I use BM Beauty Naked or Stripped Foundation, which is great for my skin as it’s all-natural and antiinflammatory so gives me a flawless polished finish. At the end of each day, Inika Certified Organic Eye and Make-up Remover is great - I love it, again because it’s natural.
Q: What’s your best bit of beauty advice? A: Contouring. My make-up artist is an expert and has taught me how it’s done. It’s all about colour blocking and then blending. Q: How do you like to pamper yourself? A: I love a regular facial. I go to DestinationSkin when I’m in the UK - they have an amazing natural facial that uses pineapple and papaya extracts called the DermaQuest. I pamper myself at home with a hot bath and essential oils.
Q: What are your essential cosmetics? A: BM Beauty’s Noir Mineral Eyeshadow and Lash Thickening Mascara on my eyes and Inika’s Brow Pencil to perfect my eyebrows. MAC also have some great bold lipsticks, like Costa Chica, that I love to experiment with. Q: What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without? A: I love my BM Beauty Nude Lip Gloss as it’s a great handbag essential and I love the fact it’s non-sticky. Q: What’s your favourite feature to accentuate if you’re glamming up? A: My eyes are my favourite feature to play on. I love experimenting with different colours and looks. I like a classic smoky eye but I’m also partial to a pop of colour to mix it up. DREAM BATHROOMS Bathrooms are probably the hardest working area in a house these days as we demand more of them than ever before. BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
T
o be successful, they should work as a practical space for the daily wash-and-go as well as being a haven dedicated to wellbeing and pampering. “Long gone are the days when the bathroom was simply a functional space. People are moving away from the Victorian-style basic bathroom and towards the modern, spacious spa feel,” says Anthony Howells, bathrooms buyer for B&Q. “They want the clean lines, minimalism, wet rooms and walk-in doorless showers, enhanced by chunky floating yet stylish fixtures such as units and frosted glass, which they see when they stay in hotels and want to replicate.” He predicts that, where space allows, the popularity of free-standing baths, becoming more sculptural in shape, will continue to grow as they provide a focal point in large bathrooms. Experimenting both with design and colour is a growing trend, according to Rita Rendo Castro, sales and marketing manager at Catchpole & Rye. “People are becoming increasingly design confident, with more opting to make a statement with a brightly-painted bath or patterned tiles,” she
says. “The bathroom is an ideal space to try out new colours in a small area which wouldn’t necessarily work in a larger living space. Dove grey is a chic but safe choice for walls and gives a neutral base which can be enlivened by other colour choices. Salmon pink and yellow are one of my favourite combinations as they’re elegant but have a warm, summery feel.”
Taking the waters has never been more pleasurable - so check out a bathroom solution for your home.
WATERPROOF STYLE Bathrooms are embracing technology so that they can be the ultimate, flexible retreats, says Cheryl Gurner, creative director at Bathrooms International. “The bathroom has benefited hugely from advances in technology in recent years. Bathroom-friendly flat screen televisions, fibre-optic lighting in showers which mimic a twinkling star effect and hidden speakers offering surround sound - all add up to the wow factor in this most personal space.” O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2 6 7

FRONTLINE BATHROOMS While Paul Flowers, senior vice president of design at Grohe, predicts that the bathroom will be transformed in the next 10 years, as it develops into a space fully-equipped to cater for health and wellbeing. “Developments in technology are already allowing us to equip it with personal lifestyle and health functions such as diagnostic mirrors, which measure and monitor the status of our physical health. “Lighting, projection and sound are bringing “entertainment” into the room, and can be programmed, just like showers, to precisely suit your mood at different times of the day. “As the barriers between the bedroom and the bathroom blur, the space will become more sensual, decorative and truly have the atmosphere of a fully-equipped indulgent zone.”

SMALL BUT PERFECTLY FORMED Although the glossy interiors magazines feature vast bathrooms, the UK has the smallest bathrooms in Europe. “But just because your bathroom’s small it doesn’t mean you need to compromise on the quality or style of fittings,” says Robin Levien, design director of Ideal Standard, which has a Space range designed for compact areas. “By utilising innovative design and clever storage, your bathroom can still be well equipped and a calm rather than crowded space.” He suggests wall-hung toilets with a cistern neatly hidden behind a wall or fitted unit; basins and showers which fit snugly into corners, and clever features such as a bath with storage

drawers at one or both ends. “A sliding door can release further space, while large-size tiles create an illusion of more space more effectively than small ones,” he says. “Don’t pack out the walls with cupboards and definitely avoid too much at high level as this can reduce ‘head space’ which, if the area is small, is claustrophobic.”
Splash out solutions Ideal Standard’s Space range includes an offset corner basin with semi-pedestal, £165.75, and Moments furniture bath with two end storage units, £3,611. COLOUR WASH Colour’s back in fashion in homes and that’s being reflected in new ranges of bathroom furniture in a range of rainbow colours, which can brighten even the dullest space. “Add a pop of colour to your bathroom by installing a brightlycoloured basin or furniture,” says Ellen Tietz, marketing manager at Villeroy & Boch. “Sunflower orange, olive green and petrol blue are popular at the moment and sit beautifully alongside clean bright white ceramics.”
Splash out solutions Villeroy & Boch’s Subway bathroom furniture is available in petrol blue, as well as white and glossy grey. Vanity unit from £456.

WASH & BRUSH-UP Revamping a whole bathroom isn’t always possible if the budget’s tight, so it’s worth looking at a more affordable update of features and accessories. “An easy, affordable and effective option is to replace some of the brassware and accessories, such as taps, radiators and mirrors,” says Emma Sturgess, marketing manager at Frontline Bathrooms. “These relatively simple changes can make a real difference to the look and style of the bathroom - delivering a totally fresh look.”
Splash out solutions Frontline’s range includes the chic chrome Stream Mono Basin Mixer, £110 (matching bath and bath shower mixer taps also available); a Windsor Mirror with integral lights and accessory shelves, £135. Restoration prices start from £204 for re-enamelling basins and shower trays; from £358 for re-enamelling baths, and from £180 for reconditioning or re-plating taps in brass. O C TO B E R 2 0 1 2 6 9

Lounging In Style There’s a reason lounges are known as the ‘living room’, because they’re exactly that.

A
lounge can really make a house a home - it’s a place to relax with loved ones, snuggle on the sofa after a long day’s work, or chat with friends, so it’s no wonder that it’s often the room people prioritise when it comes to decorating. “When picking a style for your lounge, quite often the answer lies in what fits best with what you have got already,” says Roger Mears, who set up Roger Mears Architects in 1980 (www.mears.co.uk). “If the building is in a period style, for example, a classic approach could be best. If it’s a country house, a traditional feel would sit naturally, rather than imposing these onto a new-build where these might look fake. It’s always good to go with the flow, and express a style with honesty.” There are occasions when rules can be bent, though.
“Even in the most traditional of settings, there can be a feature that’s so outstanding (old floorboards, a period staircase, decorative ceilings) that a monochrome, contemporary minimalist look could really highlight.” So treat the above only as a guide. As Roger says: “The final choice should be what resonates with your personality and lifestyle as well as your house, rather than a passing trend.”
CONTEMPORARY The contemporary living room should be bright, ooze sophistication, maybe revel in current trends but more importantly provide comfort. “Create a lighter richness and contemporary feel by complementing sumptuous deep colours with clean white lines,” suggests Jeremy Garrish, buyer for Carpetright. A striking carpet or a bold wall feature will help to create a particular mood without being overbearing and makes for a family-friendly option as muddy feet are harder to spot. Another option is to use furniture and accessories in similar shades but different textures throughout the room, from sofas and rugs to cushions. “A statement sofa can provide a striking focal point to the room and it’s the perfect canvas from which to build a modern scheme,” suggests Emma Rackley, upholstery buyer for Furniture Village. Accompany the sofa with sleek furniture (curved edges are popular at the moment) such as coffee and lamp tables, in a contemporary metallic or glass finish. “And use solid, industrial elements that can also be used to create an urban feel while mixing materials such as glass, wood and metal to make the modern scheme feel instantly lived in,” says Emma. TRADITIONAL Think of the traditional lounge and heavy oak beams, log fires and bencompassing leather sofas spring to mind. The good news is it’s not too difficult to create your very own cosy haven within the confines of your home. “Choosing the right combination of fabrics and colour schemes is key to achieving the right traditional look for your lounge,” says Emma. “Muted tones and soft hues combined with classic wooden furniture and classic side lamps will help to bring a traditional feel together.” Jeremy adds: “Or add rich, autumnal colours to your floor to create a cosy retreat you’ll never want to leave. Match with dark leather furniture and wooden accessories for a traditional feel.” Traditional upholstery designs with button back detailing, or a country-inspired fabric, can help complete the look if you’re opting for an old-school feel. Or for a more masculine focal point, include a weathered leather armchair, a dark, statement lampshade or paint one of the walls a dusky colour to evoke a sense of depth to the room. CLASSIC The key to creating a classic living room is to keep it simple, so forget the chintz. “Classic living rooms draw on many historic design periods but steer clear of the overtly traditional and heavy, by mixing in modern and contemporary designs to create a carefully balanced whole,” says awardwinning interior designer Katharine Pooley. Art Deco detailing, be it bevelled-edge mirrors, metal inlay joinery, polished marble or specialist geometric ironmongery, lends itself well to the clean lines of a classic interior. “Roccoco-esque precious stone and gilt detailing can also be added in small measure for richness,” says Katherine. “The wonderful thing about a ‘classical’ living room interior is that it is all encompassing. All that it asks is a certain lightness of hand to ensure a balanced space.”

Carole Brown, director of marketing at Dunelm Mill, agrees: “A classic scheme is brought to life with boutique accessories so add crystal lighting, silk cushions, candles and vases of dried hydrangeas complete the look.” A key statement piece, such as the Chesterfield-style Langham sofa, is the best way to bring together a classically styled lounge. “Compliment the trademark deep button back details and elegant roll top arms with a beautiful soft fabric and a combination of neutral classic colourways, to evoke a calming traditional style,” says Emma. “Simple colour choices keep the look elegant and the use of glass accessories, simple shapes and soft lighting will all add to a sophisticated living area.” Lounge inspiration Classic decor should never go out of style, and the grey tones and wooden features in this lounge are a perfect example. Ça c’est Paris ! A new collection of fabrics and home accessories brings haute couture fashion into the world of interior design.
The first Jean Paul Gaultier collection for Lelievre explores all the couturier’s signature designs in eight fabrics and a collection of home accessories including cushions, throws ready-made curtains and rugs.
KILT provides a nod to Scotland with a cotton velvet tartan in bold assertive colours. A perennial favourite for Gaultier, tartan has featured in many of his fashion collections for both men and women and will look amazing as curtains or on sofas and chairs.
The year of the Dragon has inspired a wonderful interpretation of body art on the multicoloured ROCK fabric in linen and cotton toile complete with Jean Paul Gaultier’s signature discretely forming part of the design.
No Jean Paul Gaultier collection would be complete without ‘la marinière’ and the ILLUSION fabric design gives the nautical stripes a twist or perhaps a wave! This fabric is totally reversible on cotton and polyamide with the feel of jersey - it is, like its designer, so French!
KOMODO is a magnificent technical interpretation showing the master’s hand drawing skills on a high definition damask. This monochrome tattoo motif is available in six colours and is suitable for upholstery.
The starting point for the whole collection was a beautiful dress in the 2009 fashion collection and this has been reinterpreted on a fine cotton voile in four colourways - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

SAISONS is digitally printed to portray a romantic landscape in nature’s changing seasonal colours, the fabric is wide width and provides a stunning backdrop for any interior. MOUSSON, translated as monsoon, shows an expressive explosion of leaves and flowers on a high definition jacquard lampas fabric in three colourways with a contemporary silver grey background. A Chinese touch is provided by SKIN, another tattoo inspired fabric in thick satin with a chiselled engraving style design in metallic thread which is luminous. Suitable for exquisite upholstery with a discrete brilliance. For a couture touch, CABARET on close inspection is a chic fishnet design reinterpreted in a cotton jacquard. It is reversible in ten colours which unite all the fabrics in this first collection. All the fabrics are in colours designed to coordinate and blend with each other to give an original look to any interior space. The accessories all blend seamlessly with the collection and
include cushions with velvet appliqued flowers, sequin covered fish, feathered birds and fishnet, patchwork and tartan throws, la marinière rugs with embossed signature and buttons and readymade curtains with eyelet headings. Prices of fabrics from £73.00 Accessories from £58.00 The collection has been designed for Lelievre which was founded in Paris in 1914 and since that time has created exclusive fine furnishing fabrics, coordinating decorative accessories and designer collections for countries around the world. Four generations of this family owned company have been driven by a desire for perfection in the manufacture and design of beautiful textiles. Working hand in hand with interior designers, Lelievre always uses themes both traditonal and contemporary in their collections with unique creativity and technical innovation. WHAT’S GOING ON

s a family grows so it needs more space, more amenities. But with a shortage of quality family property, and stamp duty at a level where buying a home for more than £1m means paying the Chancellor 5% of its value (7% if it’s over £2m) it’s not surprising that many homeowners prefer to stay put and expand what they’ve got. What’s more, the kids can stay at the same schools and the parents don’t have to learn to live with a whole new

We talked with the leader in the field, Cranbrook Basements, to find out why looking down is on the up. According to the company its clients are seldom short of ideas, which – as appreciation of what can be achieved underground grows – become ever more exciting. However, they need to find a specialist who can realise their vision in a way
that can be built, respects the existing building and meets their expectations. That’s where Cranbrook’s three-dimensional modelling comes in; it helps people visualise the space they want to create and see how it relates to their home and way of life. Sometimes people ask for something relatively simple like an extra room or two. Sometimes, though, it is a much more complex scheme which might include a swimming pool or even a two and three storey basement.
H OUS E & GA R D E N
Cranbrook has a totally integrated approach to design, management and construction. It’s a one-stop shop where architectural designers, quantity surveyors and structural engineers come together with over one hundred craftsmen, many with over 20 years experience. They’re all available through just one point of contact. Having a single contractor responsible for every aspect of the job, from the first survey through to the final coat of paint, makes life much easier for anyone who wants to grow underground. So what sort of basements are your neighbours constructing? The latest trend is for multi-level basements. These call for special techniques when working in confined spaces at considerable depths, while rigourous measures are needed to ensure the stability of the property, and its neighbours. Reasons for going deep – apart from extra rooms – include swimming pools, underground garages, lift shafts and even vehicle lifts.
Basement pools, especially, are increasingly common, including exercise pools – literally the swimmer’s version of a treadmill. Pools, Cranbrook points out, are not just holes filled with water. They need an infrastructure of heating, ventilation, pumps and water quality equipment. But it may not be a pool that’s going under that building down the street. London underground today houses kitchens, media
rooms, family rooms, en-suite bedrooms, gymnasia, offices, libraries, music rooms and, of course, wine cellars. More surprisingly you might even find a car down there; perhaps not the family runabout, but a supercar or historic vehicle. With off-street parking at a premium, and fears of theft, basements with a garage are becoming more popular. It needs a vehicle lift to get the prideand-joy down there, but that’s
not a problem in most places. What if you’re lucky enough to live in an historic building? Don’t give up. Cranbrook recently completed a three storey basement below a Grade II Listed Building and a single level basement under a 225-year old Grade II* Listed Building. The company’s excavation and underpinning teams receive specific training in basement construction below historic structures. For the past thirty years the company has been involved with some of the most exciting basement projects in central London. And it keeps winning them by delivering exceptional quality combined with exceptional value. Having seen Cranbrook’s casebook, we can only say that if you want to move up the property ladder, you should definitely consider going down.

he beauty of fine architectural moulding was the business of Herbert Hodkin of Hodkin & Jones in 1868 and from those fine beginnings for over 144 years the company have been associated with the design, manufacture and installation of quality fibrous plaster products still producing by hand now, as then. The importance of Hodkin & Jones history is evident in the care, skill and craftsmanship given to each commission showing experience is paramount to achieve the service expected from their discerning clients. Many plaster manufacturers in the uK can be traced back to the company having worked or trained there before establishing their own companies. Having over the years worked with architects, restoring fire damaged mouldings in theatres and halls, reinstating mouldings in great mansions and historical buildings to creating spectacular features like the acoustically designed rock wall effect for the Millennium Cardiff Theatre which won the coveted Plaisterers Trophy. The FPDC Plaisterers awards are held in high esteem as one of the most prestigious competitions in the industry. Winning the trophy immediately classes you amongst the industries greatest, giving recognition from your clients and reassurance for potential customers about your standard of workmanship . Hodkin & Jones “Simply Elegant” range of mouldings offers one of the most comprehensive ranges of fibrous plaster mouldings available. With traditional elegant cornices from Georgian, Victorian, Gothic, Regent, and Art Deco periods through to the present day popular contemporary range. Hodkin & Jones also offer a match to existing service for restoration to heritage or listed properties and have re created patterns from debris and previous photographs available to faithfully reproduce the original mouldings. Typical projects include spiral staircases, swimming pool ceilings,

and restoring ornate plaster mouldings to historical residential buildings. Often Architects or interior designers have a need to use designs not available from standard ranges, which is where Hodkin & Jones offers their bespoke service. From drawings they are able to manufacture mouldings to the exact dimensions specified whether it is for a ceiling design to create a grand room or a new design created by the architect that is in keeping with the particular project they are working on. Managing Director David Lewis stated in a Rolls Royce commemorative book “Archaeologist who have excavated locations such as Herculaneum and Pompeii have found designs that are exactly the same as ones we still make today. Plasterwork has a very, very long history going back thousands of years. The one aspect that is incorporated into the business from start to finish is quality” says David. “We have never lowered our standards, or substituted quality for cost but I would argue that we are the best”. Hodkin Jones Ltd undertakes projects both nationwide and overseas. Many of the residential projects are based in London with contract managers and installers working here on a daily basis. Many of the projects are of a confidential nature due to either the building or the client so agreements are drawn up when requested ensuring no advertising is allowed unless with prior agreement with the client or their representative. The companies website www.hodkin-jones.co.uk is very comprehensive showing the “Simply Elegant” range that is available. There is also a gallery with images of previous projects which include Residential, Public Building, Hotels, Offices and Retail schemes. For a free catalogue or to talk to one of their specialists about your requirements please call 01246 290890 or email sales@hodkin-jones. co.uk. The company is also happy to arrange visits from one of the technical contracts managers either on site or via the designer’s office to go through specific requirements. ■

HEDGING
FOR ORNAMENTAL VALUE AND PRIVACY!
W
by Andrew Coggins General Manager of Pantiles Nurseries Limited
ith Autumn upon us, now is a sensible time to sort out your hedging requirements.Last months column emphasised the importance of autumn planting generally, although for hedging this season is even more important. For any of you that want anything other than small pot grown hedging plants , the autumn is the start of the root ball and bare root season. The advantages of having root ball plants over either pot grown or bare root plants are dramatic. Generally pot grown hedging is less bushy and a lot more expensive than it’s root ball relative. The reason for this is that pot grown products suffer more stress during their lives. Plants grown in this way, would have to be grown for years, to get to a reasonable size, are often restricted in growth. This is despite the fact that during this time they would have to be repotted at least every year, making the plant more expensive year on year. Root ball plants are planted into the field as young plants and require significantly less labour input, each year they get trimmed, to keep them
bushy, and the root ball is undercut, to encourage fibrous root growth, to prepare the plant for eventual lifting. These operations are often carried ot mechanically which minimises the labour input. In addition to this plants grown in the soil generally suffer a lot less stress, as water and nutrients are less likely to become limiting factors; unlike in container growing, this allows plant growth to be more vigorous and healthier. The establishment of these two different types is very similar for large specimens, provided they receive adequate and consistent watering. If maintained properly, after planting, neither of these should suffer any losses. The only time this starts to change is in the late spring when temperatures start to rise, but at this time root ball hedging usually becomes unavailable anyway. The final type of hedging is the bare root hedging, these are often grown in a similar way to the root ball hedging, often these are restricted to relatively small plants. This type do often suffer losses, however the prices are in many cases significantly cheaper. The main features of these plants are that they are small both in height and relatively thin, hence they are often called ‘whips’ in the trade, the reason they are not usually bushy is that they spend a lot less time in the ground and are often no more than large cuttings.

October onwards is an ideal time to create a hedge, as soon as the hedging becomes available. Root ball hedging, for most types of hedging, is far superior to container grown plants and generally are cheaper, bushier and available in a wider range of types and sizes. If you want a hedge to provide privacy quickly it is a false economy to go too small as often newly planted hedging can take 6 months to establish a good root system before growing away rapidly. Establishment of the root system over winter, whilst the rest of the garden is dormant is another reason for planting in autumn and by spring the plants are ready to put on foliage quickly. Hedging plants are one of those things which people tend to buy because they need it rather than want it, but even so there are plenty of choices of variety and size to suit most situations. The slower growing plants tend to be more expensive than their equivalent faster growing competitors. The choice of type of hedge is huge and largely depends on their different characteristics and cost. Amongst the more common evergreen hedges are laurel, Prunus laurocerasus, or the smaller leaved Portugese laurel, Prunus lusitanica, both bearing dark green evergreen leaves that provide
an excellent backdrop for colourful flower borders. Photinia or red robin are evergreens which provide a bit of character themselves, with their red shoots in spring and early summer. Holly (Ilex) and Pyracantha with their autumn berries and intruder resistant thorns are another option. Another less commonly seen hedger can be made using Elaeagnus which either comes in a silvery green leaf or variegated forms all hardy and are characterised by their small fragrant flowers. I have mentioned only a few of the options available and for more advice I recommend visiting any good nursery where you can find and get advice on a much wider range of options.

The outdoor life - Origin style
F
or over thirty years, Origin has been building cutting edge designer indoor pool houses. Over that time, the sophistication has increased dramatically, to keep ahead of the changing demands of the company's customers. Since the earliest days, sales, planning and progress has always been monitored at director level, and the teams of designers and builders have changed little, giving a consistency which has become Origin's benchmark. As an example, meet the all new Olympic range - proving to be one of Origin's great successes. Several buildings are currently underway, and many more are on the drawing board. e range comprises four main models, e Olympiad, Marathon, Arena, and Challenger. To celebrate 2012 and Great Britain's Olympic moment the Origin team put together these pool house packages, inspired by this most historic of games. With an accent on healthy living the designers built in fitness must-haves, such as a well equipped gym, swim jets and an exciting alfresco feel. In the Challenger alone there is all the equipment necessary to train for a triathlon - so it is well within reach of Origin customers to get in some serious training for Rio in 2016! rough the use of cutting edge technology and the finest new materials Origin has managed to bring in the four new packages at record breaking prices - and have included many of the most exciting advances available to today's swimming pool buyer. Temperature controlled pool and surroundings - of course. An exterior finish engineered timber construction. A wide choice of exterior and interior finishes and colours - so your new Olympic Pool House will match in with the colour, surroundings and fabric of your home. e company has even selected ten big canvas styles to maximise the look of your interior, featuring the sort of imagery that will suit this truly life changing installation. OUTDOOR OLYMPIC TOO… For the past thirty years an important part of Origin's business has become the design and construction of outdoor pools as well as their trademark pool houses. It is hardly surprising, since the company's design and construction teams have made it their business to have a complete understanding of swimming pool technology. Although Origin is recognised primarily as the leading indoor pool house company it would have been a shame if the potential customers who preferred the alfresco freedom of swimming under the sun (or stars) had not been given the opportunity to share the knowhow gleaned from the Origin team’s long established expertise. To further celebrate London 2012 it made sense to develop a range of outdoor pools with the sporting flavour of the Olympic indoor pool range. Origin is introducing these high tech Olympic outdoor installations to complete the picture. Four generous sizes are available - 10 x 4 metres, 10 x 5 metres, 12 x 6 metres and 15 x 6 metres. e packages include a concrete pool chamber, tile patterned pool liner (with an optional mosaic tile), stone copings and pool filtration system. Features include gas, oil or electric pool heating for comfortable swimming outside throughout the year, underwater lighting, bubble cover and roller, and stainless steel steps. An Origin pool is built to be easy to clean, so you can spend more time relaxing, and less with chemicals and a mop. For a further investment it is worth considering one of the many advances in pool covers too. As you may have noticed, Britain’s weather can be unreliable – so the company has developed a deep knowledge of the quickest and easiest ways to protect the water from leaves, and make it safe and secure for younger members of the family. COUNTRY WISE… Barn living is the phrase currently on the lips of the Origin team. ese delightful buildings have a real rural feel, hiding the cutting edge technology of the company's state-of-the-art product. Because they fit so beautifully into the country landscape they are often easier to get through the planning stage, and happily take some of the lovely gentle colours that the designers have to offer. ere is nothing better than swimming in your own garden, outside or under cover. Choosing an Origin design, unique to you, is a reliable and trustworthy way to get exactly the pool you want, from a company with vast experience in this specialist area. Origin's brochures shows a wealth of the company’s finest moments, and are an easy way to understand the different features and strengths of the different models. FOR YOUR LOVED ONES’ BENEFIT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A VALID WILL
T
here have been many stories in the press lately about the allegations by Michael Jackson’s brothers that his 2002 will has been fabricated because the Will states it was signed in Los Angeles but he was in New York on that particular date. If they can successfully prove this it could affect the distribution of the estate to his children and his mother as their guardian. A Will is one of the most important documents you will make during your lifetime. Put simply, it will determine where all your assets and belongings should go after your death and make sure that your loved ones are provided for. It is therefore important that it is drafted and executed properly to avoid any allegations of fraud as in Mr Jackson’s estate. The law governing the making of a valid Will is very complex and this is why it is recommended that legal advice is sought. Firstly, you must have mental capacity to make a Will and there are specific tests for the required standard that have been laid out by judges in previous cases. Secondly, you must intend to make a Will and know, understand and approve of the contents of the Will. This should overcome any mistakes, fraud or undue influence that could make a Will invalid. There are also formal requirements for the making of a valid Will that have been put in Acts of Parliament. For example, a Will must be in writing and signed and witnessed in a particular manner. If it is not executed correctly it will not be valid and this is often the reason why homemade Wills are found to be invalid. People give all sorts of reasons for not making a Will such as it is too morbid, it is too time consuming and it is too expensive. Contemplating death may be morbid but surely it is better to have peace of mind by having a Will properly drawn up for you to ensure your estate goes to your loved ones. To obtain legal advice on wills, contact Barlow Robbins on 01483 562901 or www.barlowrobbins.com.
