COUNTRY COMES TO TOWN AT THE AUTUMN DECORATIVE FAIR 2ND-7TH OCTOBER 2012 BATTERSEA PARK, LONDON SW11 4NJ
T
he Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is well-known for its wide choice of period design, from fine Georgian and Regency pieces to midtwentieth century originals. The Autumn Fair, to be held at Battersea Evolution (the Marquee), Battersea Park, London will highlight in a special foyer display the varied styles of country furniture and accessories that are always popular with buyers. Items in the display will include oak and country furniture from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries (farmhouse tables, settles,
dressers, stick back chairs and stools), naive paintings and pastoral pictures, textiles and linens, folk art and treen (household objects carved in wood such as bowls, trenchers, spice caskets and candle boxes), and a host of items one might find in all rural homes from country house to manor or artisan’s cottage. All pieces will be for sale, and are drawn from exhibitors at the Fair. It will be curated by exhibitor Martin Murray, an oak and country furniture specialist and member of BADA. There is a definite trend at present for good traditional furniture. Good painted furniture continues to be popular, and buyers
are currently favouring rarer items with paint in original condition that command strong prices. Those with a penchant for more modern design will find an excellent selection; around 25% of furniture and accessories at the Fair date from the Art Deco period to 1980, and encompass affordable and decorative glassware and ceramics, lighting, clocks, and of course a wide range of furniture, mainly
from Italy and Scandinavia. Whilst many twentieth century items for sale at the Fair are signed or attributable to well-known designers and artists, which appeal to collectors and connoisseurs, pieces are also selected by exhibitors for their general style and quality offering good value for money to those looking purely for decoration. The Fair now has a number of well-regarded art dealers with modern and contemporary pictures and sculpture. ■ Tickets are £10.00 including catalogue (which allows free return to the Fair throughout the week) For more details, please contact the organisers: Harvey (Management Services) Ltd on 020 7616 9327 Or visit www.decorativefair.com

BATTERSEA POWER STATION
SOLD for £400m to Malaysian bidder
B
attersea Power Station, the four-tower listed London landmark, has been sold to a consortium led by Malaysia’s SP Setia for £400m, beating bids from about 15 others from as far afield as Brazil, China, South Africa and Kazakhstan. Joint sale advisers Ernst & Young and Knight Frank exchanged contracts earlier this month on the sale of the 39-acre site on the south bank of the River Thames, the last prime piece of central London real estate available for redevelopment. “The Brits were noticeable by their absence from the bidding process,” said Knight Frank’s Stephan Miles-Brown, adding London real estate had become the target for overseas cash amid the financial turmoil of recent years. “In the 1980s, the Chelsea Harbour scheme was developed not far from Battersea Power Station,” he said. “Bovis Homes (BVS.L) and P&O were behind that. Times have changed.” The consortium of SP Setia, Malaysia’s leading property developer, plans to redevelop the crumbling but protected site into homes, offices and retail. They also plan to build a tube station on the premises that will connect to the Northern Line. Current planning consent is for 3,500 homes and 1.7m sq ft of office space. The Malaysian team plans to keep the chimneys despite suggestions the protected site would be more financially viable for a developer if it was demolished, a move that would have provoked a strong backlash among the British public and politicians
16 SEPTEMBER2012
due to the affection many hold for it. Other consortium members include Sime Darby and the Employees’ Pension Fund of Malaysia. SP Setia was named preferred bidder in June, since when the consortium has been carrying out due diligence on the four-chimney brick power station built in two stages in the 1930s and 1950s. Malaysian buyers have bought a string of large office blocks in London’s main financial district in recent years and the Shard skyscraper, the newest addition to the city’s skyline was funded by the state of Qatar. Overseas buyers have invested 15.8 billion pounds in London offices since 2010, 64% of the total, CBRE (CBG.N) said, and foreign ownership of the City financial district stands at 52%, according to Development Securities (DSC.L). The decaying edifice on the south bank of the River Thames, which is Europe’s largest brick structure with white art-deco chimneys, has been a recognisable silhouette on the London skyline for 80 years. Rival bidders included Chelsea Football Club, which looked at the site as a possible replacement for Stamford Bridge. Its architect was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed London’s famous red telephone boxes. It also featured in the Beatles’ film Help!, Pink Floyd’s Animals album and more recently in the Batman film The Dark Knight.
EDUCATION
A LOVE OF LEARNING
L
ocated in the centre of the historic town of Guildford, the RGS is an independent day school for boys aged 11 to 18. The School dates its foundation from 1509 and as a flagship for boys’ education has a national reputation for academic excellence but also prides itself on its traditional values of decency and respect, supported by outstanding pastoral care. RGS boys have the opportunity to experience the widest range of enriching activities providing them with a broad and balanced education. Academic excellence is at the very heart of the School’s philosophy. The RGS aims to encourage the growth of intellectual curiosity and creativity and to inculcate a life-long love of learning in the boys. The RGS is consistently one of the top five boys’ schools in the country at both A Level and GCSE: in 2011, 82% of all grades at A Level were achieved at grades A*/A with 41% of grades at the A*; 94.6% of all GCSE results were passed at A*/A. In the last five years, 99% of all leavers have gone onto Higher Education continuing their education in the leading universities in the country. The School is extremely proud of its Oxbridge record; in the last six years 200 offers have been achieved including 33 offers in the recent round of admissions. All boys are encouraged to make full use of the excellent facilities for music, drama and art. The boys have an exceptionally varied choice of creative activities ranging from concerto performances, to musicals and plays. Sport, as an integral part of each boy’s development, is a thriving part of the School; as well as the major sports of rugby, hockey and cricket, a diverse range of options are available from fencing to judo. RGS boys have achieved national and international

honours in a wide variety of sports recently including rugby, shooting and sailing. The full extra-curricular programme encourages teamwork, leadership, and self-reliance. Opportunities abound through the Combined Cadet Force, Explorer Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and various other outdoor pursuits. Respect, tolerance and understanding of others are a central feature of the School; the staff are friendly and approachable and the outstanding pastoral care enables the boys to thrive in an environment in which they feel safe, valued and able to express themselves. A strong sense of community is nurtured and boys enjoy the opportunity to take a full and active role locally as well as in a range of innovative educational projects nationally and internationally. The annual Open Day takes place on Saturday 6 October 2012 from 10.00am to 12.30pm. Prospective pupils and their parents are warmly invited to meet the Headmaster and enjoy a tour by a current pupil, providing an insight into the rich diversity of the School. No advance booking is required. The School aims to make the education offered as widely available as possible. Generous means-tested bursaries, up to 100% remission, are available as well as academic, music and art scholarships.

to provide for some of the country’s leading asset lenders. Today Fellows remains a family affair, as William’s great-great-granddaughter Jayne runs the business with her husband Stephen Whittaker, who is the Managing Director. The auctioneers now have over 80 sales a year specialising in watches, jewellery, coins and medals, silver, paintings, furniture, clocks, works of art and other collectable antiques. However, based on the number of dedicated annual sales, watches and jewellery make up by far the biggest proportion of the items they handle. Selling everything from rare collectable pocket watches and luxury modern timepieces, to parts for repair and service, Fellows has an exhaustive approach to the watch market, allowing buyers and sellers at both ends of the spectrum to find an auction that works for them (Pictured are a Rolex Navy Issue Submariner, or ‘Milsub’, from the 1970s and a modern IWC Romana Perpetual Calendar which sold earlier this year). A similar attitude is held for the jewellery sales, where a high-value modern diamond ring, is as at home as a lower value, more eclectic period piece, like this adaptable Victorian A LATE 19TH CENTURY pearl bangle (left). With the advent of this new location, Fellows hope, not only to give a better auction experience to its existing London clientele, but to encourage a new group of individuals and businesses to experience selling through a different kind of auction house; one which is unpretentious, unceremonial and well and truly in the 21st century. With the major external renovation of West London’s exquisite Syon House taking place throughout the middle of the summer, and the venue set to showcase some very exciting new developments, this year’s later event dates will ensure the 2012 British season is rounded off in style. 2012 will be the seventh consecutive Salon Privé and will boast a range of new features and exhibits, with more supercar and premium brands than ever before. celebration – stunning exhibits from the 1950s and the fantastic new SLS. Expected to steal the limelight at this year’s event is the very special ROFGO Gulf Collection. Salon Privé is delighted to be able to unearth this rare collection of Gulf cars from Adrian Hamilton’s country house in Hampshire, and bring them to Syon Park on full public view together for the very first time. These cars, instantly recognisable from their iconic sky blue and orange livery, stretch right back from 1967 (the 1967 Mirage was the first Gulf-liveried

In a year when Her Majesty The Queen celebrates the 60-year Diamond Jubilee, the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing is also celebrating its own 60th anniversary in the public eye, and will be on display in all its glory at Syon Park this September. Named because of its unusual “Gullwing” upwards lifting doors, the car was initially conceived as a purpose-built racing sports car and went on to achieve immediate iconic status – as evidenced by 2011’s equally striking tribute SLS, also exhibited at Salon Privé in 2012. There will also be a special exhibit dedicated to memorable cars from the movies, including some rare

New to the menu will be pizza using Nonna’s (the matriarch of the family) own original recipe. The Capricciosa for example, features cooked ham, field mushrooms, artichokes, and pitted black olives over the traditional San Marzano tomato, mozzarella fior di latte and basil base. Valentina was founded in East Sheen in 1991 where today, the Zoccola and Arcari families share their life-long passion for food and wine… “Our families hail from Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, a small village near Monte Cassino, southeast of Rome, where we have farmed the land for generations. We still return home annually to harvest olives from the family grove for our own-label olive oil, and source other fresh ingredients from the native soil. Most of our vast range of products – be it in the delicatessens or the restaurants – are, born of tradition and original skills, directly from our humble beginnings in the Italian countryside. “Valentina is our way of bringing an authentic taste of Italy to the UK – to serve recipe dishes in our restaurants that have been handed down through the families.” Valentina, a name shared with the daughter of one of the founding families, is now a thriving business. The original delicatessen and restaurant in Sheen, owned and run by the Zoccola and Arcari families has been joined by sister branches in Putney, Sevenoaks and Notting Hill Gate and now Weybridge. Valentina Weybridge plans to open mid September. Normal opening hours will be Monday to Saturday, 8am-11pm and Sunday, 8.30am to 11pm. The store is located at 10-12 High Street, Weybridge, KT13 8AB.

He will introduce his new book, What are You Looking At? 150 years of Modern Art in a Nutshell, and explore what modern art is, why we either love it or loathe it and why it is worth so much money. Continuing the art theme, Henrietta Garnett and Sue Bradbury will be discussing the private lives of the Pre-Raphaelites. Audiences will also have the chance to meet and hear the Sunday Times bestselling author of Roman historical fiction, Lindsey Davis, along with Simon Scarrow, himself a great chronicler of the Romans. Other Festival highlights include a special event at Polesden Lacey with William Shawcross, who will be talking about the witty, vivid and revealing letters of the Queen Mother, never before published, and An Audience with Mary Berry at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. HAM HOUSE & GARDEN a 400-year-old treasure trove waiting to be discovered and one of a series of grand houses and palaces alongside the River Thames. Ham House was built in 1610 for Sir Thomas Vavasour, Knight Marshal to James I. On Sir Thomas’s death in 1620, the house passed briefly to the Earl of Holdernesse, before becoming the home of William Murray in 1626. Murray had been the ‘whipping boy’ for the future Charles I. He took punishment on behalf of the young prince, and formed a close bond with him, growing up to share his taste in art and architecture. Between 1637 and 1639, Murray remodelled the interior of Ham. He created the Great Staircase and a suite of sumptuous rooms on the first floor: the Great Dining Room (now the Hall Gallery), the North Drawing Room, and the Long Gallery with its adjoining picture closet. The decoration is intact in most of these rooms. The remaining part of Murray’s art collection gives us a rare picture of fashions under Charles I. When the Civil War broke out in 1642, Murray naturally joined the Royalist cause, and was created 1st Earl of Dysart for his loyalty. He died in Edinburgh in 1655.
The Duchess of Lauderdale
Ham passed to Murray’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth. Her father’s titles were conferred upon her in 1655, after his death, when she became the Countess of Dysart. She was described by contemporaries as beautiful, ambitious and greedy. In 1648, she married Sir Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Baronet, of Helmingham Hall in Suffolk, a wealthy and cultivated squire. They had eleven children, of whom five survived to adulthood. Renowned as a political schemer, she is said to have belonged to the Sealed Knot, the secret organisation supporting the exiled King. Even before Tollemache’s death in 1669, Lady Dysart was rumoured to have formed an attachment to the ambitious John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale, Secretary of State for Scotland. Following their marriage in 1672, they extended and refurnished Ham as a palatial villa reflecting the Duke’s status as one of the most powerful ministers of Charles II. Much of this luxurious interior decoration survives today, along with rare textiles, furniture and paintings.
The Tollemache dynasty
After the Duke’s death in 1682, the Duchess had to curb her extravagance and was eventually reduced to pawning her favourite pictures and jewellery. Elizabeth died at Ham in 1698. Ham House and the Dysart title then passed 32 SEPTEMBER2012
to her eldest son from her first marriage: Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Earl of Dysart (1649-1727). Lionel took little interest in the house but by contrast, the 3rd Earl’s grandson and heir, another Lionel, the 4th Earl, carried out major structural repairs in the 1740s. He filled many of the rooms with new furniture and paintings. Most notably, the Queen’s Bedchamber, furnished by the Lauderdales for Charles’ Queen, Catherine of Braganza, was converted into a first-floor drawing room. The mahogany chairs, gilt pier-glasses and tables, and tapestries after Watteau survive in situ. The 5th Earl partially re-landscaped the garden and was succeeded in 1799 by his brother, Wilbraham, who immediately made improvements inside and outside the house. The 6th Earl was a generous patron of Reynolds and Gainsborough. He created the striking Yellow Satin Bedroom, but most of his changes were antiquarian in spirit, enhancing Ham’s 17th-century character.
Restoration & renewal
Little changed at Ham between the 6th Earl’s death in 1821 and 1884, when William, 9th Earl of Dysart came of age. Sixty years of benign neglect had left the house and its contents in urgent need of repair and Lord Dysart embarked on a thorough restoration campaign. The roof was renewed, electricity and heating installed, and much of the 17th-century furniture repaired. The 9th Earl died in 1935, when Ham passed to his second cousin, Sir Lyonel Tollemache. Sir Lyonel and his son, Cecil, gave Ham to the National Trust in 1948. Discover the fine interiors and historic gardens that make Ham an unusual and fascinating place to visit. Please note: for conservation reasons, some rooms have low light levels. The beautiful gardens include the much photographed Cherry Garden. It features lavender parterres flanked by two berceaux (vaulted trellises) of pleached hornbeam and a statue of Bacchus at its centre. Walnut and chestnut trees in the outer courtyard act as roosts and nesting sites for a large flock of green parakeets. The formal listed avenues are formed by more than 250 trees. It is said that the Duchess still haunts the house today, along with a number of other ghostly inhabitants. LONDON 2012 CLOSING CEREMONY:
Dancing the night away as the party finally ends If Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony was a dramatic statement of everything everyone wanted London 2012 to be, then the closing ceremony on Sunday 12th August was a joy-filled celebration of the triumphant way in which so many of the athletes those hopes have been realised. A scale model of London took centre-stage wrapped entirely in newspaper, including Tower Bridge, The Gherkin and the London Eye. Athletes appeared and filled each segment of the iconic Union Jack flag, celebrating their achievements to constant cheering and clapping from the crowds. Performers included Emeli Sande, Madness, Pet Shop Boys, Ray Davies, George Michael, Jessie J and Annie Lennox. Kaiser Chiefs and Ed Sheeran

led tributes to British greats The Who, David Bowie and Pink Floyd. The At the end of the Ceremony, there was a handover to Rio de Janeiro for the Stadium turned into huge catwalk with appearances from supermodels 2016 Olympic Games, and the Olympic Flame extinguished, signalling the Naomi Campbell & Kate Moss. end of the Olympic Games. Iconic Black London cabs performed a ‘taxi ballet’ before the Spice Girls emerged and performed an amazing medley of hits. Monty Python star Eric Idle led the 80,000 crowd with a superb rendition of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, leaving the crowds smiling, and enhancing the already positive and excitable atmosphere that has been created as a result of the Games. He was followed by a performance by pop icons Queen, including vocals from Jessie J and from beyond the grave, by the band’s late singer Freddie Mercury.
So that’s it! The London 2012 Olympics are at an end, and for the host nation it has been probably the greatest ever sporting spectacle witnessed on these shores. The stunning performances of British athletes left the nation a comfortable third in the medal table with more medals than in any games since 1908, which was also held in London and at which just 22 nations took part compared to the 204 this year.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR MAKE-UP MANTRA? It’s always been important to me to look good when I’m racing. I even like to have painted nails when I ride. I like the saying, ‘Look good, feel good, go good!’ I definitely think looking good helps you feel more confident so I’ll wear a little mascara, tinted moisturiser and lip balm. I always reapply before getting up on the podium.
Q: WHICH AREAS REALLY SUFFER BECAUSE OF YOUR SPORT? Training with a helmet on every day means my hair is prone to a lot of frizz so I need a haircare regime that helps protect against helmet hair! I love to leave in a hydrating smoothing product after washing like Pantene’s Smooth & Sleek 24h Frizz Fighter to combat any frizziness. Olay Essentials Complete Care SPF30, £10.29
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I love Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream or Neom Organics Moroccan Blush Rose Oil for some indulgent pampering. In my make-up bag I rely on Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF20, By Terry Touche Veloutee highlighting concealer and Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE TO ACCENTUATE FOR A NIGHT OUT? My hair, of course! It’s crammed into a hot helmet pretty much every day so when I’m glamming up, I love to really make my hair stand out.
VICTORIA PENDLETON Track cyclist Victoria Pendleton, 31, is the face of Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek.
JESSICA ENNIS
Heptathlete Jessica Ennis, 26, is the face of Olay Essentials.
Q: DESCRIBE YOUR DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE? I’m training pretty much every day so it’s important for me to keep my skin clean and hydrated. I’ll start off by cleansing my skin in the morning with a smoothing scrub you can use in the shower. Then I’ll always protect my skin with an SPF as a lot of my training is outdoors. The Olay Essentials Complete Care SPF30 is ideal as it’s really light so doesn’t clog my pores and make me sweat more.
Q: DO YOU WEAR MAKE-UP TO TRAIN OR COMPETE? Absolutely. I wear make up every day when I’m training - I always like to look and feel my best. I’ll wear an oil-free foundation then apply black eyeliner and mascara. I’m an eyeliner addict and love dark smoky eyes for a night out.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? Bobbi Brown cosmetics - especially their foundations. I also love MAC for eyeliners and mascaras, and they also do a lovely Lip Conditioner.
Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RECOVER AFTER A HARD TRAINING SESSION? I love a long hot soak in the bath. My favourite product is the Elemis Aching Muscle Super Soak - it smells a bit like Deep Heat! When I have some downtime, I love to go to a spa with friends. I don’t really have massages as I have plenty of painful sports ones during training!

TOM DALEY
Diver Tom Daley, 18, is ambassador of Adidas Body Care
Q: DO YOU FOLLOW ANY KIND OF SKINCARE REGIME? I use a Dermalogica facial wash and - this is going to sound really stupid - but I always moisturise because chlorine really does dry out your skin. I’m doing say 25 hours a week training and I think about 15 of those are in the pool.
Q: WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR SWIM KIT BAG? A shower gel like Adidas Ice Dive is the key thing, just because I’m constantly in and out of chlorine. It’s quick and easy to rub all over your body and your hair just after you get out the pool. I’ve become immune to the stench of chlorine because I’ve been diving for 10 years now but that, teamed with Ice Dive deodorant, is the best way to make sure I don’t smell of it.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR GROOMING MUST-HAVE? For me, it’s my hair wax - I use TIGI Bed Head. I’ve kind of got to the stage where I can just style it without even looking in the mirror. But when I’m in the pool, it just has to be natural because there’s no waterproof hair wax as yet.
Q: HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR TRAINING OR COMPETING? Shaving foam! But not to shave with. We rub it on our shins and then wash it off, so it gives us better grip when we hold onto our legs for a dive. Max Factor False Lash Effect Gold Edition Mascara, £10.99
Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RECOVER AFTER A HARD TRAINING SESSION? I tend just to chill out. I’ll maybe have a massage from the sports therapist but it will be a deep tissue massage. When diving, you hit the water at about 34 miles an hour, so there’s constantly impact on your shoulders, wrist and back. The massages are kind of painful at the time but you feel much better afterwards. Ice Dive range available Nation wide
KERI-ANNE PAYNE
Swimmer Keri-Anne Payne, 24, is the face of Max Factor & Oral-B
Q: BEING A WATER BABY, HOW DOES THE POOL AFFECT YOUR SKIN? My beauty regime is quite easy. Because I’m a swimmer the chlorine can really make my skin dry so afterwards I shower, exfoliate my face and then moisturise. When I get home from training it’s just a case of applying some more moisturiser and a slick of mascara and then I feel a little bit more girly again.
Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE TO PAMPER YOURSELF? I love to paint my fingernails and toes when I’m watching TV. Being in the pool all day isn’t very glamorous so it’s nice to treat myself when I’m not training. Dior nail polish in Blue Label is my current favourite but I have to keep my nails short to avoid scratching other swimmers in the pool.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I love using Bliss Lemon + Sage Body Scrub because it smells so fresh and leaves my skin feeling pampered. I reach for Aussie 3 Minute Miracle deep conditioner twice a week to keep my hair soft, shiny and conditioned.
Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MAKE-UP TRICK? I would never go for false lashes but if you wiggle a mascara brush from the root of your lashes up to the top you can really plump your eyelashes. I apply a few coats of Max Factor’s False Lash Effect Gold Edition Mascara for real ‘wow’ impact. When it’s on I’m often surprised they’re my own lashes! 50 SEPTEMBER2012

Realising Your Aspirations Why not wake up to Summer and make an appointment with Tom Oliver, personal trainer to the elite? How many of us started the year with good intentions to join a gym, start a fitness regime, take up running or cycling only to find our noble resolutions in tatters a few months later? With every day pressures, it’s never easy to find the right work and life balance which is why it’s often better to get a helping hand. The key to maintaining optimum health and fitness is regular exercise and a good and healthy lifestyle but often we need the motivation to help us achieve our aims. That’s where Tom Oliver, international personal trainer, comes in.
Why hire a personal trainer? There are those who believe personal trainers are only there to accompany them to the gym or when out jogging in the park, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. As a leading personal trainer to highflyers and those in the international business community with little time on their hands, Tom Oliver’s approach is about time efficiency and treating the whole person with a bespoke programme to meet an individual’s needs. Tom adapts his personal training skills to suit the busy lives of his clients, many of whom travel overseas regularly and have punishing work schedules. In creating a solid and uncomplicated training programme which incorporates good diet, exercise and key lifestyle choices, Tom is able to guide a client through his or her whole fitness programme, offering constant motivation, a regular schedule of challenging exercise, and most importantly, the results to show for it.
About Tom’s background Born in Hertfordshire, Tom was educated at Stowe, the leading public school in Buckinghamshire where he won the first ever 54 SEPTEMBER2012
pure sports scholarship. From an early age, he demonstrated a keen interest in many sports, and became accomplished in football, cricket, athletics, cross-country running, squash and rugby. But it was rugby which became his great passion, and on leaving Stowe, he was signed up by Northampton Saints Rugby Club. In time he turned to rugby coaching at the highest level, holding posts with clubs in Chile, Argentina and Australia. Back in the UK, Tom established a personal training service to match the aspirations and exacting demands of a widening portfolio of clients, many of whom were professionals based in London but who needed to travel for their work. As the preferred trainer for clients of Harrods in Knightsbridge and also Edmiston Yachts, the world’s largest charter yacht company, Tom has much experience of juggling programmes to suit the hectic schedules of the international business community and to delivering the highest standards of service and commitment. Tom does not believe in quick fix exercise fads and trends or extreme dieting. His programmes are always fun, varied and challenging and he ensures that in terms of diet, his clients have the right nutritional package to match their physical training needs. His singular approach is based on many elements, the key being to build a strong rapport with the client and to fully understand what it is they most wish to achieve from any training programme. It follows that the setting of short, medium and long term targets is integral to his adopted strategy. Tom believes that exercise should be fun and he ensures that no programme is predictable or dull. He constantly introduces new elements to his client’s individual routines to keep them firmly on their toes!
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Although Tom has a relaxed and cheerful manner, he is a disciplinarian at heart, and maintains that nothing can be achieved over time unless exact and comprehensive monitoring of a client’s progress is applied. In practice, Tom remains totally flexible when it comes to a client’s preferred location for training sessions: a park, gym or workplace are all possibilities. Ideally, however, he maintains that a client’s own home provides an excellent environment, so much so that he regularly assists clients to create their own in-house gyms, and can oversee the design, choice, and installation of equipment. Alternatively, Tom is happy to work alongside architects and designers in the early stages of a home gym project and to advise on equipment specification and layout. Many of Tom’s clients are successful operators in the international business community and he has often travelled to Russia, UAE, and the United States to advise on home or yacht gym installation and personal training programmes. And if that wasn’t enough, Tom also has a good grounding in Spanish, French, Italian and German for the benefit of his European clientele.
Training with Tom Oliver will help a client achieve their key aims: To feel stronger and fitter, and to have more energy, flexibility and agility. In other words, to feel good on both the inside and outside...

BROWS TO
WOW
Athletes have stepped up to the podiums as icons during London 2012 but despite the patriotic nail art, the beauty focus has been all about fresh faces. USA Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin revealed competing make-up free forced her to “focus on skin and well-groomed brows” to look her best. But she isn’t the only person championing the power of the brow. The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, Keira Knightley and Lily Collins are all working a fuller eyebrow right now. ‘The’ face accessory of the season, big, bold, beautiful brows were the buzzwords being repeated backstage at fashion weeks, setting a new trend for anti-plucking.

Shape up
Accentuate arches
With solid structured brows high on the beauty agenda, it’s time to acknowledge them as a feature of your face to rival your eyes or pout. Eyebrow expert Shavata recommends getting your brows professionally shaped every two to three months: “Visit a professional brow technician to keep the shape consistent and groomed,” she advises. “You’ll need about 10 days of brow growth from your last plucking in order to restore them professionally. However, if you want a full reshape they will require a minimum of a month’s re-growth.” Big eyebrows won’t be for everyone. A good brow technician should match your shape to your age and lifestyle. Once your perfect arches are in order you can keep new stray hairs at bay with regular at-home tweezer grooming.
Maximise brows
Far from just a fashion statement, the shape of your eyebrows can change the shape of your face, lift the eye and take years off you. “Brow shaping can create the illusion of improved facial balance and proportion,” reveals Daxita Vaghela, brow and lash specialist. “Arched shape brows are perfect for a square or heart face shape, oblique shaped brows are perfect for a round shaped face, straight brows are great for an oblong shaped face and angular brows suit triangular shaped faces.” If you’re unsure, a natural curve along the brow bone suits most people. Emphasise your eyebrows to their full potential with a brow pencil or powder in a shade best suited to your colouring. “Apply with short, feather-like strokes while holding your skin taught,” Daxita advises. If any wayward brows need taming, use a clear gel for flawless brows.
Big is beautiful this season but the on-trend bushy brow isn’t always achievable. You might have fair hair, naturally sparse brows or an unhealthy tweezer addiction. Eyebrows also thin and lose definition with age but help is at hand for those in need of some brow TLC. “If you want to return to a healthier, stronger looking brow, it is possible,” says celebrity eyebrow threader, Jo Pallan. “Take supplements with vitamin A, C, B3 to stimulate hair growth. Gently brushing the eyebrows in the direction that they grow with a brow brush twice a day can also stimulate hair growth.” Use a brow oil to ensure hairs are well nourished and don’t become brittle. Once solely dedicated to promoting lash growth, enhancing serums for eyebrows are now on offer. Use daily and the follicly-challenged will be rewarded with brows that wow.
TRIED & TESTED
London 2012 will forever become the gold standard of Olympics for Team GB. Our testers champion the medal winners with gilt-edged talons:
BARRY M INSTANT NAIL EFFECTS IN GOLD FOIL, £3.99 (WWW.BARRYM.COM) It’s not very often that one coat creates a big impact. This luxuriously thick polish is less about the shimmer and more about the foil-look finish. Gold star.
REVLON NAIL ENAMEL IN GOLD COIN, £6.49 (BOOTS) After two coats, this metallic polish really gives you the Midas touch. It dries quickly to leave a semi-shiny finish that is subtle but just bling enough.
ROCOCO NAIL APPAREL IN MOLTEN LAVA, £12 (SPACE NK) I received so many compliments wearing this shimmering polish. The pearlescent factor added to the longevity and, although pricey, lasted chip-free for well over a week.
Permanent feature
Sick of the sight of your brow pencil? Make a break from daily reapplications and aim for something more enduring. Tracie Giles, semi-permanent make-up artist says: “To keep the perfect shape or for a little cheat, all those fine extra strokes can be applied with permanent make-up so all you then need to do is tweeze and trim. “It can be used to fill in sparse brows, augment brows or even lift them.” Semi-permanent brow treatments typically last for around 18 months before fading when a colour refresher may be required. Eyebrow tinting is another low-maintenance option to take your eyebrows from barely-there to beautifully defined. Suitable for fair or dark hair, this semi-permanent treatment makes an instant impact and can last up to four weeks.

The first ever retrospective exhibition by French shoe designer, Christian Louboutin, at the Design Museum,

crosses his legs after warmly shaking my hand and offering me a chocolate biscuit. Louboutin, 49, is walking on cloud nine right now: there's a range of cosmetics in the pipeline for next year (Louboutin Red lips, anyone?), he's the top judge for Martini's Royale Casting (the new face of the brand will bag 12 pairs of Louboutins), and a retrospective exhibition at London's Design Museum is currently celebrating his two decades of shoe wizardry. From towering heels to studded sneakers and bejewelled pumps, it's like the best shoe shop in the world, only with 'Don't Touch' signs at every stiletto turn and security guards positioned near the wall of thigh-high boots. "It was hard to choose two hundred!" Louboutin exclaims when I ask him to pick out his favourite pair featured in the exhibition. "I mean some shoes, like the Guinness shoes (with heels constructed from actual cans) we no longer have - not one pair." He goes on to reel off the names of shoes as if they were his children, struggling to single out 'the' style deemed most iconic by Louboutin aficionados. "I mean lately the Pigalle..." he says, before hesitating, "probably. Between the Pigalle and the Lady Lynch - or the Fifi, which has a really high heel with a round toe." So what it is about Louboutin's vision that ensures his shoes are red carpet regulars, fashion industry favourites and capable of commanding upwards of £395 for a classic pair? "Balance. Proportion. And the cleavage," Louboutin replies succinctly, using shoe designer speak for the amount of toes flaunted. "Shoes can do a lot for a woman. ey can give this extra sense of femininity and empowerment." Louboutin's fascination with shoes dates back to when he was just 11 or 12 years old. He recalls discovering a drawing at an African art museum near his parents' apartment that displayed a woman's high heel vividly crossed out in red. "I sort of discovered creativity through that drawing," he says. His now inspirational image of the Fifties-style stiletto, which was intended to safeguard the parquet floor, was a sharp contrast to the Seventies trend for flat or chunky-heeled shoes. Louboutin's love of performance, cabaret and the showgirl later fuelled his glamorous vision. Although he doesn't name one specific muse, he regularly links up with burlesque performer Dita Von Teese at events. "Nobody wears shoes like a dancer on stage," he says. He cites art, architecture, landscape, travel and artefacts as areas from which he draws inspiration. Louboutin packs his suitcase and seeks out a hot climate to design his summer collection and, similarly, a cold bolt-hole to find focus for autumn/winter inspiration. e designer goes to extremes to achieve the right working environment. "I have a house in the country in France and it's often cold but if it's not cold enough I just turn the heat off then I'm sure to be frozen. "I'm quite influenced by the light and by the heat, so it's easier to imagine a super-light sandal when it's boiling outside than furry boots and vice-versa." Just as Louboutin's shoes range from flats to six-inch heels, his personality is full of light and shade, humour and sincerity. Discussing how foot sizes have become bigger during his career, he remarks: "I was just going up to a size 41 (UK 8), but now I have to go all the way to 43 - and then there's the trannies, which make me go all the way to a 47!" Although Louboutin creates flat shoes for men and women, it's the towering stilettos that have brought him worldwide fame.

e higher the heel, the more prominent that revered red sole. "People say I am the king of painful shoes," he says. "I don't want to create painful shoes, but it is not my job to create something comfortable. "I try to make high heels as comfortable as they can be, but my priority is design, beauty and sexiness." With a demanding diary of Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Olympic spectating, state dinners and charity engagements, the Duchess of Cambridge has stepped up her role as fashion queen. Little wonder her high street, vintage and second-hand buys have been upgraded to designer pieces thanks to a reported £35,000 clothing allowance from Prince Charles. Luckily, you don’t need a royal budget to emulate her regal style. The high street is quick to leap on her every elegant fashion move with affordable options.

Casual Kate Kate proved to be a good sport during London 2012 with a string of supportive outings in her capacity as official Olympic ambassador. She looked relaxed in Team GB tracksuit tops, and white fitted polo tops were one of her favoured spectator pieces. Try Esprit’s stretch polo top, £13.99. Team with Kate’s current penchant for coloured skinny jeans, which show off her slender legs. Sales of coral jeans soared when she sported them to play hockey during a GB team training session. George at Asda has a similar pair for just £14. The Duchess often smartens up a casual outfit with a fitted navy blazer. Pull on Peter Hahn’s gold button blazer, £59, for some instant princess chic. Swimmer Rebecca Adlington was caught on camera during a meet-and-greet admiring Kate’s Stuart Weitzman navy wedges. Raise your game (and height) with Dune’s Ghita closed toe wedges, £75. When it comes to everyday dog walking and food shopping, Kate tends to veer towards a neutral palette. Channel her on-trend countryside style with John Lewis’s cashmere toast v-neck jumper, £69.
Formal Kate Occasionwear is where Kate really excels with her wardrobe choices. Refined and elegant, her choice of knee-grazing hems, long sleeves and demure necklines make her a fashion icon for any age. Kate guaranteed she could be spotted on the Thames from a distance during the Queen’s Jubilee river pageant in eyepopping red. Fashion Union’s belted dress has the same peplum waist and skater skirt detail, £22. Continuing the colour theme, Kate regularly wears cobalt blue. Replicate her familiar shift silhouette with BHS’s bargain blue dress, £25. She uses blush and nude shades to ooze chic for special occasions. Cinch your waist like Kate in her ladylike lace Alexander McQueen number by adding a belt to Lipsy’s Amy
Childs lace pencil dress, £65. The Duchess isn’t afraid to recycle outfits and her blue collarless Missoni coat is one of her repeat favourites. Transform any dress with Marks & Spencer’s Autograph sequin collarless coat, £135 (available October). Whatever the outfit, you can bet a plain pair of court shoes will be involved. Step out in Kate’s actual leg-lengthening accessory staples, L.K. Bennett’s taupe patent Sledge heels, £195.

H OU SE GARD EN
I
have often said that we should emulate the prudent wealthy people of Tudor times who invested their money in tangible things like land, property, decorative arts and items of intrinsic value such as gold and silver. e production of artefacts made of the latter was, by the middle of the 16th century, strictly controlled and as proof of this the Goldsmiths’ Company had instituted a system of marking all items so made which revealed with individual stamps on the surface the quality of the material, the identity of the maker, the place where it was tested and the officer in charge of the testing. As it was an annual office this mark changed each year and, taking its form as a letter of the alphabet, became known as the Letter of the Year Mark or more recently simply the ‘Date Letter’. Originally it was called the Assay Mark - from the French word assai meaning examination - introduced under a statute of 1478 wherein the Goldsmiths’ Company was made liable to a fine if it marked any substandard silver. (A point here is that in this context the term goldsmith applies to silversmiths as well.) In 1545 the fourth mark was added, depicting a lion walking to the left with its right paw raised and known as the Lion Passant. It became known as the Sterling Mark as it took the place of the earlier King’s Mark to denote quality while the latter became recognised as the mark of the London Goldsmiths’ Company and Assay Office. e reason for the change was two-fold. Firstly by the mid 1500’s the coinage had become debased by approximately 50% which meant that a silver crown (5 shillings) had only half a crown’s worth of silver content. To prove the maintained sterling value and quality of wrought plate, that is items made of silver, the Lion Passant mark was introduced. Secondly, by this time and starting as early as 1378, Assay Offices had been established in various parts of the country, particularly at York, Newcastle, Lincoln, Norwich, Bristol, Salisbury and Coventry. While it was imperative that all

silver should be guaranteed to be of the sterling standard and marked as such it was impractical to expect silversmiths from these disparate places to travel to London to have their wares marked and so each adopted a different emblem to equate with the Leopard’s Head of London. All these towns and cities used a letter of the alphabet to identify the Assay Master but they did not all use the same sequence of letters. London used the first twenty letters in the alphabet excluding ‘J’ and when the run was exhausted the typeface or the shape of the background ‘shield’ was changed. In 1560 Queen Elizabeth I restored the value of the coin, a move which set Britain on a steady course to recovery for the best part of 100 years only to be decimated by our civil war (1642 – 1649.) Among the results of this were vast amounts of earlier wrought plate being melted down to pay for it, which in turn caused a shortage of silver for manufacture. Over time this affected the monetary supply to such an extent that by the 1690’s further legislation was necessary. Until the reign of Charles II all our coinage was made by hand, stamped by hammer and die and the edges trimmed with shears. Although trade was often conducted through barter or credit, cash transactions were
common enough and so, before parting with your coins it was only human nature to snip a little bit of the edge of each one. ese little snippets all mounted up - the original ‘every little counts’ – but it had already become a capital offence to clip coins and, with a fake die, forge your own money. However with an increased demand from working silversmiths these scraps could command as high a price as the coins they had been cut from, and with less risk of detection of the crime. So a new type of coinage was called for and a mill was set up in the Tower of London and powered by horses to produce perfectly circular coins. As a belt -and-braces measure an inscription or legend was engraved around the outer edge thereby making illegal clipping virtually impossible. But the authorities failed to see the problem with having both old and new currency in circulation at the same time. Obviously people hung on to the new with its full face value money’s worth, while spending and clipping - the old. Clearly the old coinage had to be withdrawn and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of May 1697 were the final days for collection at the ten furnaces specially built behind the Treasury, which was then at Whitehall between the Banqueting House and the river. For weeks great piles of coins, mostly half face value and barely recognisable had been collected, melted down and cast into ingots. In one instance some £52,000 of face value coins were melted to produce just over half that amount of silver worth. But distribution of the new coins was slow and while all this was going on another factor became evident; the value of coin clippings to silversmiths had to betaken out of the equation. is was done by raising the silver content of wrought plate to a level above that of coin. Not by so much as to make the material too soft for use and durability but sufficient to be detected by the assay. e figures were a raise from 92.5% pure to 95.84% pure. It was known at first as the New Sterling Standard but – as it
was denoted by a stamp showing the figure of Britannia – it soon became known as the Britannia Standard. is mark replaced the Lion Passant mark and in London the Leopard’s Head was replaced by a mark showing a Lion’s Head in profile, facing to the left with a jagged neckline as if torn from its body. Heraldically this is called ‘erased’ and so the Britannia Standard in London is denoted by the Britannia mark and the Lion’s Head Erased. In all other towns and cities the Lion’s Head Erased is used in addition to their town mark. From 1697 until 1720 the Britannia Standard was obligatory but in the latter year the economy in England had recovered sufficiently for the government to restore the old Sterling Standard while retaining the Britannia Standard as an option which it remains to the present day. In the early days of the maker’s mark, people were less literate and initials meant little or nothing to most, so symbols were commonly used. ese might be a miniature image of the shop or tavern sign where the silversmith had his workshop, such as leathern bottle or a swan, a star or crescent moon. By the 17th century we see the first two letters of the surname being used and by the beginning of the 18th century the silversmith’s initials gradually became the norm. From the 1720’s it can be said without question that the manufacture and sale of English silver was the most proficiently run and tightly controlled of all industries, with the welfare and benefit of manufacturer, supplier and purchaser held in equal esteem. e four marks as described filled every requirement and would surely have survived unaided save for a change in taxation in the 1780’s and the Convention Hallmarks introduced in the 1970’s, nearly two hundred years later. When we’ve dealt with them we really will get onto the silver from the Channel Isles, Scotland, Ireland and other desirable categories where the present day equivalent of the prudent Tudor person should still be putting their money ■

People are moving away from the Victorian-style basic bathroom and towards the modern, spacious spa feel,” says Anthony Howells, bathrooms buyer for B&Q. “They want the clean lines, minimalism, wet rooms and walk-in doorless showers, enhanced by chunky floating yet stylish fixtures such as units and frosted glass, which they see when they stay in hotels and want to replicate.” He predicts that, where space allows, the popularity of free-standing baths, becoming more sculptural in shape, will continue to grow as they provide a focal point in large bathrooms. Experimenting both with design and colour is a growing trend, according to Rita Rendo Castro, sales and marketing manager at Catchpole & Rye. “People are becoming increasingly design confident, with more opting to make a statement with a brightly-painted bath or patterned tiles,” she says. “The bathroom is an ideal space to try out new colours in a small area which wouldn’t necessarily work in a larger living space. Dove grey is a chic but safe choice for walls and gives a neutral base which can be enlivened by other colour choices. Salmon pink and yellow are one of my favourite combinations as they’re elegant but have a warm, summery feel.”

Bathrooms are embracing technology so that they can be the ultimate, flexible retreats, says Cheryl Gurner, creative director at Bathrooms International. “The bathroom has benefited hugely from advances in technology in recent years. Bathroom-friendly flat screen televisions, fibreoptic lighting in showers which mimic a twinkling star effect and hidden speakers offering surround sound - all add up to the wow factor in this most personal space.” While Paul Flowers, senior vice president of design at Grohe, predicts that the bathroom will be transformed in the next 10 years, as it develops into a space fully-equipped to cater for health and wellbeing. “Developments in technology are already allowing us to equip it with personal lifestyle and health functions such as diagnostic mirrors, which measure and monitor the status of our physical health. “Lighting, projection and sound are bringing “entertainment” into the room, and can be programmed, just like showers, to precisely suit your mood at different times of the day. “As the barriers between the bedroom and the bathroom blur, the space will become more sensual, decorative and truly have the atmosphere of a fully-equipped indulgent zone.”

Small but perfectly formed
Although the glossy interiors magazines feature vast bathrooms, the UK has the smallest bathrooms in Europe. “But just because your bathroom’s small it doesn’t mean you need to compromise on the quality or style of fittings,” says Robin Levien, design director of Ideal Standard, which has a Space range designed for compact areas. “By utilising innovative design and clever storage, your bathroom can still be well equipped and a calm rather than crowded space.” He suggests wall-hung toilets with a cistern neatly hidden behind a wall or fitted unit; basins and showers which fit snugly into corners, and clever features such as a bath with storage drawers at one or both ends. “A sliding door can release further space, while large-size tiles create an illusion of more space more effectively than small ones,” he says. “Don’t pack out the walls with cupboards and definitely avoid too much at high level as this can reduce ‘head space’ which, if the area is small, is claustrophobic.”

Revamping a whole bathroom isn’t always possible if the budget’s tight, so it’s worth looking at a more affordable update of features and accessories. “An easy, affordable and effective option is to replace some of the brassware and accessories, such as taps, radiators and mirrors,” says Emma Sturgess, marketing manager at Frontline Bathrooms. “These relatively simple changes can make a real difference to the look and style of the bathroom - delivering a totally fresh look.”

or over thirty years, Origin has been building cutting edge designer indoor pool houses. Over that time, the sophistication has increased dramatically, to keep ahead of the changing demands of the company's customers. Since the earliest days, sales, planning and progress has always been monitored at director level, and the teams of designers and builders have changed little, giving a consistency which has become Origin's benchmark. As an example, meet the all new Olympic range - proving to be one of Origin's great successes. Several buildings are currently underway, and many more are on the drawing board. e range comprises four main models, e Olympiad, Marathon, Arena, and Challenger. To celebrate 2012 and Great Britain's Olympic moment the Origin team put together these pool house packages, inspired by this most historic of games. With an accent on healthy living the designers built in fitness must-haves, such as a well equipped gym, swim jets and an exciting alfresco feel. In the Challenger alone there is all the equipment necessary to train for a triathlon - so it is well within reach of Origin customers to get in some serious training for Rio in 2016! rough the use of cutting edge technology and the finest new materials Origin has managed to bring in the four new packages at record breaking prices - and have included many of the most exciting advances available to today's swimming pool buyer. OUTDOOR OLYMPIC TOO… For the past thirty years an important part of Origin's business has become the design and construction of outdoor pools as well as their trademark pool houses. It is hardly surprising, since the company's design and construction teams have made it their business to have a complete understanding of swimming pool technology. Although Origin is recognised primarily as the leading indoor pool house company it would have been a shame if the potential customers who preferred the alfresco freedom of swimming under the sun (or stars) had not been given the opportunity to share the knowhow gleaned from the Origin team’s long established expertise. To further celebrate London 2012 it made sense to develop a range of outdoor pools with the sporting flavour of the Olympic indoor pool range. Origin is introducing these high tech Olympic outdoor installations to complete the picture. Four generous sizes are available - 10 x 4 metres, 10 x 5 metres, 12 x 6 metres and 15 x 6 metres. e packages include a concrete pool chamber, tile patterned pool liner (with an optional mosaic tile), stone copings and pool filtration system. Features include gas, oil or electric pool heating for comfortable swimming outside throughout the year, underwater lighting, bubble cover and roller, and stainless steel steps. An Origin pool is built to be easy to clean, so you can spend more time relaxing, and less with chemicals and a mop. For a further investment it is worth considering one of the many advances in pool covers too. As you may have noticed, Britain’s weather can be unreliable – so the company has developed a deep knowledge of the quickest and easiest ways to protect the water from leaves, and make it safe and secure for younger members of the family. COUNTRY WISE… Barn living is the phrase currently on the lips of the Origin team. ese delightful buildings have a real rural feel, hiding the cutting edge technology of the company's state-of-the-art product. Because they fit so beautifully into the country landscape they are often easier to get through the planning stage, and happily take some of the lovely gentle colours that the designers have to offer. ere is nothing better than swimming in your own garden, outside or under cover. Choosing an Origin design, unique to you, is a reliable and trustworthy way to get exactly the pool you want, from a company with vast experience in this specialist area. Origin's brochures shows a wealth of the company’s finest moments, and are an easy way to understand the different features and strengths of the different models. AUTUMN NATURE’S TIME FOR PLANTING
I
am showing my age when I start to reminisce about what things were like when I was starting out in the horticultural industry. However it is true to say that when I was learning my trade, the given wisdom at that time was that the autumn/ winter was the best time to plant and establish plants. With the advent of large garden centres and the marketing of gardening in general, this wisdom was quite quickly turned on its head. The
76 SEPTEMBER2012
fact that a significant proportion of gardeners are fair weather ones and will only come out in the spring and summer, combined with the obvious advantage that plants naturally look better when they are growing, meant that the advertisers found it easier to promote planting in the spring. With tender plants that is factually correct, however with most others it is not! It is particularly frustrating when I speak to gardeners who, as a
result of this marketing, believe that once autumn has arrived they need to hold off planting until the spring.
time you read this, plant centres such as Pantiles will be brimming with stock to sell. With trees and shrubs, the autumn comes a bit later, usually from the end Autumn is traditionally the season of September into November, to plant bulbs, shrubs and trees, in depending on the type of plant. part this is due to availability, i.e. Evergreen hedging is usually when they are harvested. Spring the first available, field grown flowering bulbs, such as narcissi specimens which are easily the and crocus, are harvested at the best, both in value and quality end of summer, once the bulbs are harvested as root balls, as have fattened up and dried off soon as the temperatures and over the summer months. By the soil moisture levels are optimum.
HOUSE & GARDEN
Forsythia

Copper Beech
These are followed in approx October by deciduous plants, which need to enter dormancy before lifting as root balls or bare root specimens. Very dry weather or unusually warm weather can delay lifting, by a week or two, growers delaying so that plants are not put under additional stress. Finally during late October, field grown trees begin to be lifted, the delay with these again is to minimise stress on the larger plants. Lifting of trees and shrubs will usually continue throughout winter, unless freezing temperatures interrupt, until March or April, when rising temperatures often can put a stop
to lifting almost overnight, due to dramatically increased stress levels on the plants. Why was autumn traditionally promoted as the best time of year for planting and why is it better than spring, many of you will ask! Put simply, a plant of any description provided it is not tender, will during the cooler months of the year remain virtually dormant above ground. Below ground is a different matter, whereas air temperatures will be dropping regularly below the temperature threshold for growth, which is approx 5’C, the soil temperature will remain
several degrees higher and also remain fairly constant allowing root growth to continue unabated. Most years it is only during 1 or 2 weeks that soil temperatures drop low enough to stop root growth, usually in February. Autumn planted hedging, for example, will be putting all their energy into root growth, as the foliage isn’t growing, whilst also suffering minimal stress due to water loss, whereas spring planted hedging will be trying to actively grow foliage thus reducing the energy available for root growth, as well as suffering stress from heat and water loss,
thereby slowing establishment.

eicó QUALITY PAINTS THAT DON’T COST OUR EARTH
When choosing a paint for your home, it can be difficult to find a brand that offers high quality, longevity, a vast colour choice as well as boasting green credentials. eicó paints however does just that, meeting all the demands of today’s house proud and environmentally conscious consumer as a paint with a conscience. Based at the Ray Munn store in Fulham, eicó founder Rishi Subeathar works hard to ensure that offering one quality element doesn’t compromise the other; “Many manufacturers state that they produce acrylic paint, but few admit to manufacturing 100% pure acrylic, which is what is needed to produce the very best quality paint.
The reason why manufacturers will skimp on this is obvious. To achieve pure acrylic, you do require enormous amounts of energy, which in turn will add both to the cost and the carbon footprint. We manufacture eicó paint in Iceland where the energy comes from 100% free geothermal and hydro-power energy. This means that not only can we control costs, but also the manufacturing process is 100% carbon neutral. The paints are then shipped onto scheduled but often half empty cargo vessels back to the UK.” Boasting some of the lowest levels of VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) on the market, eicó have recently launched their new
eicó Zero VOC which offers exactly that, 0% VOC toxins. So what are VOC’s? Volatile Organic Compounds are the harmful toxins most paints emit when liquid turns to solids i.e. when the paint dries. These toxins can linger for several weeks after application.

DARE TO BARE STRIPPING OFF AND BARING ALL ISN’T SIMPLY CONFINED TO THE BEACH THIS SUMMER - THE MOST FASHIONABLE HOMES ARE CELEBRATING AN UNADORNED BACK-TO-NATURE STYLE.
Think rooms in a neutral palette where the focus is on wood, either bleached or showing the beauty of its grain, together with stone, complemented by pure cotton and linen fabrics, and wool throws or carpets. Colour tones are subtle, interest is provided in the varying textures and it’s a serene, uncluttered ‘less is more’ approach. While it may fly in the face of the current passion for colour and decorative extravagance, it’s perfect for those who want a calm, tranquil interior whose appeal never dates. “The natural home is a place where nature meets interiors, and it’s a celebration of a home that’s sensual, personal and imperfect,” says art director and stylist, Hans Blomquist who’s created the look in his own home and for many of his clients. “Materials used in the natural home such as wood, stone, concrete and metal are allowed to age in their own time and are paired with antique and vintage objects where their wear and tear adds to their charm.” He reveals the simple steps to create this unpretentious, homely effect in his new book, The Natural Home which also provides a through-thekeyhole-view of the style in homes throughout the world. “This is far removed from the bright colour trend which is currently dominating,” he acknowledges. “But I think we’re all longing for something more warm and inviting and where things have a spontaneity and are not so styled. “This look is about interiors which have clearly been decorated and loved over the years, and where things just seem like they have fallen into place.” Embrace ‘natural’ now and you’ll be ahead of the game decor-wise, because this look hits the high street in the autumn. Stores such as Marks & Spencer, Next and House of Fraser are focusing on this trend, with ranges which would suit ultra-fashionable loft-style
rooms with exposed brick walls and varnished timber floors, or any home where the emphasis is on functionality and comfort. “Our Clerkenwell design theme marries tweed fabrics, checks and heavy woollen textures with hardwearing industrial materials to create a cosy look with a modern edge,” says Sally Bendelow, head of home design at Marks & Spencer, whose new ranges launch in August. “Splashes of colour and fun nature motifs lift a look that is otherwise quite masculine in feel.” So whatever the temperature outside, dare to bare at home and do what comes naturally.
Awaken walls
Banish thoughts of over-elaborate decoration for walls; these are the backdrop for a pared-back scheme and should be decorated accordingly.Minimal change is needed if you’re lucky enough to have exposed brickwork, polished or aged plaster, or smooth walls which just need a skim of paint. Strip back, paint or, more quirkily, paper with pages from vintage newspapers, or make a feature wall with a collection of sepia-coloured postcards or vintage prints. “Nature’s an amazing inspiration for the colours for these rooms and it can range from off-white to deep charcoal grey,” says Blomquist who began his career in Sweden and whose style is rustic Scandinavian. “I always find myself returning to a subdued palette made up of colours found in the natural world - wet sand, earth, bark, dried flax, thunderclouds, fields of wheat, bare branches and vivid spring growth.” TIP Using muted and sombre colours will create a soothing atmosphere and the perfect background for brighter colour or areas of pattern. If your home lacks natural light, opt for a paler neutral scheme, but dark walls will throw into relief lighter coloured furnishings and objects. VERTICAL SLATS 00399 WALL MURAL, £112, JWWALLS

Fabulous fabrics
Fabrics made from natural fibres are an essential for the natural home, but beyond that there are no rights and wrongs. “Textiles bring softness and warmth to any interior and I use them in every room, as loose covers on chairs and sofas, for tablecloths, as cosy woollen blankets or just folded and piled upon a chair as a still life,” says Blomquist. “When it comes to colour, I love neutral undyed linens, because I like the range of hues from flax to ecru to grey, or cottons bleached by age and constant washing.” He’s also drawn to darker shades such as charcoal grey, earthy brown and faded blue-black. TIP For texture interest combine both fine and loose weaves with bold prints. Simple graphic patterns, faded florals and botanical prints also work well in a natural home. GO NATURAL The new Naturals collection by fabric specialists, JAB Anstoetz, has delicate patterns and understated decorative features on pure linen and cotton fabrics. Prices from £31.50 per metre.
Take on texture
Texture is the secret ingredient at the heart of the natural home, and different textures add depth, interest and richness to an interior. “Think of scuffed and scarred wood, peeling paint, rusting metal, frayed fabric, bare stone or objects that have been worn and marked by the passage of time,” says Blomquist. “I like to play around and layer texture upon texture in my home - the roughness of raw stone walls and unpainted wood alongside the dull sheen of antique glass or murky tarnished mirrors. “To me, there’s nothing more beautiful than an old piece of furniture or other seasoned objects whose texture has been left untouched. I think it’s a shame when people buy antiques or vintage pieces and set about eradicating all traces of age.” TIP Visit flea markets and antique fairs to source objects and the right patina for the natural look. Give a new purpose to old furniture and household objects and always include plants to provide an instant connection to the natural world. GO NATURAL A solid hardwood floor-standing clock in a Swedish style, a Tibro Mora clock from £569, would be a perfect feature. It’s just one of the pieces from Scumble Goosie which specialises in Scandinavian style. Marks & Spencer’s Ladbrook shelving unit on wheels, £599, (available August) in its Clerkenwell range, would be ideal to display appropriate vintage collections. Neutral tones and interesting textures have long been the signature of The White Company’s bedding collections. Its Grafton cotton throw and cushion in a knubbly cotton knit, available in white, grey or plum, complements its pure white Milford cotton linen, from £55 for a single duvet cover. Its antiqued cut-glass ceiling light, £80, suits the style. and charm of the original period. There is an immense amount of ornate plasterwork in Great Britain in many different styles. Over the years much has become damaged or destroyed. The means of restoring and conserving ornate plasterwork has changed over the centuries. While it is important to maintain as much as possible of the original plasterwork it may be necessary to restore or replace missing or damaged sections. To carry out this work requires considerable experience. Their modeller is able to take mouldings from existing designs, if symmetrical or modelling can be executed from a photograph or drawing. Pieces of damaged plasterwork can be cleaned or left, a model laid down and a mould made in varying types of compounds, from this mould a section of plasterwork can be reproduced and installed. A cast is then produced which can then be installed to match the original. Their work is not limited to just cornices, they can also reproduce decorative ceilings and walls as well as being able manufacture arches and columns to your specification. You will be provided with an estimate of the cost and the time involved to carry out the work.

BARLOW ROBBINS TEAM
RUNS FOR ‘HEADWAY’

hiplash injuries have been making news recently, owing to the exposure of ‘scams’ where people have made false insurance claims, forcing up insurance premiums as a result. However, the exposure of these antics risks diverting attention away from the tragedy of acquired brain injury and its potentially devastating long term effects. Barlow Robbins LLP has a leading specialist brain injury team dealing with such cases. Helen Goatley, who heads the team, says: “Brain injury is generally caused by anoxia (no oxygen) or hypoxia (reduced oxygen) at birth, during surgery or following trauma when the head is struck or moved violently, as in whiplash. It can have a wide range of effects, from physical problems such as uncoordinated movement to cognitive issues with concentration, remembering and speaking.’
with you and the difficulties you face. Seemingly small things like reminding you about appointments or listening patiently can make a huge difference.” The firm’s specialist expertise has brought them into contact with Headway, the charity that works to improve lives after brain injury. This year three Barlow Robbins employees ran the London Marathon to support the charity. Samantha Simpson, Debbie Leeland and Jo Kemp took up the challenge and raised £2,500 for Guildford-based Headway Surrey. Debbie said: “This was my second marathon, but I still found the experience awe-inspiring and the support of family, friends and Headway along the route gave us such a boost.” Jo said: “I was surprised at how much I enjoyed myself, particularly the feeling crossing the finish line. It feels even better knowing you have been able to raise money for a worthy cause.”
“We have helped a number of people over the years and it has given us a unique insight into how to deal with brain injured clients. It is a very worrying time for the families, when someone is very ill indeed and our extensive training in the impacts of brain injury means we know how to deal
