Tour of Britain Cycle Race

Surrey will host the penultimate stage of this year’s Tour of Britain when the race sweeps the UK this September

urrey County Council can reveal the 96 mile stage will take place on Saturday, September 21, starting in Epsom and finishing in a final climb up Guildford High Street. The rider line up has not yet been announced but previous competitors include former world champion and Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish and Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins. This year’s Surrey stage is even tougher than 2012 with daunting climbs over the first half of the race before some flat-out sprints in the run up to Guildford. The King of the Mountain climbs and sprint locations will be announced in May. John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member of Transport and Environment, said: “This will be the second year running Surrey has welcomed the Tour of Britain and once again the bone juddering Guildford High Street will prove a scintillating finish for both riders and spectators. “We proved last year with the Olympic cycle races and the Tour of Britain that Surrey is adept at hosting high profile sporting events. There is a huge appetite for cycling in Surrey and I have no doubt our county will be the highlight of the Tour. Record numbers in the event’s history turned out in Surrey last year, some 225,000.” The Surrey stage of The Tour of Britain 2013 is sponsored by Welmede, Tarmac UK and Foxhills.

Hugh Roberts, Chief Executive of The Tour of Britain, added: “As a Surrey based company we are delighted to once again have a home stage, particularly one with such an iconic finish as Guildford. Surrey will once again provide a perfect backdrop for the Tour as it draws towards the conclusion of the 2013 race.” Last year’s Tour of Britain generated almost £7.2 million for Surrey’s economy and was watched by almost one million television viewers on each of the event’s eight days. This year’s race will again be televised. The Tour of Britain 2013 will begin in Scotland on 15 September and end in London seven days later on Sunday, September 22. An exotic new addition to the fair, as well as a fresh area of antiques collecting, is Fallenstars Meteorites exhibiting fragments from outer space ranging from small individual pieces to large sculptural iron meteorites. Following a 20year career as the antiques and fine art buyer for Harrods, David Wackett used his experience in finding the rare and unusual for the rich and famous and his stand includes individual specimens from the recent fall in Chelyabinsk, Russia (as seen on YouTube) and the Campo Del Cielo meteorite shower which fell in Argentina over 4,000 years ago. 8 SEPTEMBER 2013

There are around 30 exhibitors in the fair, with new faces including Galerie Arabesque from Stuttgart, Jeroen Markies from Forest Row, East Sussex, Ottery Antiques from Somerset, HIckmet Fine Arts from London’s Portobello Road and Ashleigh House Fine Arts from Saffron Walden. A general mix of antiques is on display from furniture to paintings, Oriental textiles to antique rugs and kilims, fragments from outer space, garden stoneware to jewellery as well as silver, bronze, ceramics, glass, antique reference books and many other decorative works of art. An appropriate highlight of the fair is a watercolour of a Surrey view by popular Victorian artist, Myles Birket Foster RWS (1825-1899) which can be found on John Robertson’s stand. ‘The Footpath by Waterlane’ was exhibited at The Royal Watercolour Society Summer Exhibition of 1892 and is thought to be of a view close to BIrket Foster’s magnificent house at Witley in Surrey. Among the furniture on show is an exceptional linen press, c 1765 from Ottery Antiques, Art Deco and Art Nouveau furniture and accessories from Jeroen Markies, a fine and

Refreshments are available throughout the day and ample free parking makes it easy to spend a relaxed and fulfilling day enjoying all that is on offer. The fair exudes a friendly atmosphere and the dealers are more than willing to impart their knowledge or help source specific items. It is a haven for interior decorators, able to find everything under one roof where craftsmanship and authenticity are key elements. Sunday 22nd September 2013 at Hook Road Arena from 12 noon One of the main aims of Rotary is to help the community and back in 2011 the Rotary clubs of Epsom & Ewell decided to organise a Family Fun Day with the help and support of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council.

he main aim was to promote the great amount of voluntary and community work undertaken by Borough local residents. We also wanted to give local charities, community groups and businesses an opportunity to promote themselves and in the case of charities to raise money for their particular good cause. Finally we wanted the day to be an event of family entertainment and fun at a reasonable cost, with many free arena displays. We organised the first Family Fun Day to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Borough and with their support and assistance we are delighted to run an even bigger event this year with over 120 pitches. We welcome the Southern Golden Retriever Display Team, Huxleys Birds of Prey, many vintage cars and coaches and welcome back the GB Martial Arts Association, the Pegasus Parachute Display Team, a children’s fun fair and food court. We also will have a marquee run by the Borough, with many free activities and entertainment for all the family celebrating the diverse cultures in and around Epsom and Ewell. We are sure there will be something of interest for all the family. The family dog show also attracted great interest last year and

so we are again running this event between 1-30 & 3-30 in their own arena. If you have a pet dog you would like to show, please bring your dog along. ASHTEAD RYE MEADOWS WETLANDS… A site of nature conservation importance

eorge and Daphne Burnett have lived in Ashtead for more than 25 years. In 1990 they purchased a 45 acre parcel of land from the estate of their neighbour, the late Lord Barnby, in keeping with his wish that the estate be retained under a single ownership. Since that time Daphne has managed the land, which has principally been used for the grazing of horses. Her concern has been to ensure the proper maintenance of the land and the retention of its rural appearance, situated as it is adjacent to Ashtead Common. The lower meadows, extending to some 14 acres, form a relatively narrow strip 800 metres long which is bisected by the Rye Brook, a tributary of the River Mole, and a designated “Main River” by the Environment Agency. Over the last century, urban & agricultural development has had a detrimental effect on the Rye Brook with the result that it supported little wildlife. Yet it is on a flood plain and ideal for supporting a wide range of habitats. Daphne’s vision is to restore the natural processes such as erosion, the depositing of minerals and the occasional flooding of wetland habitats, which would secure a healthy long term future for both wildlife & people. The proposal is that this corridor along the Rye will be transformed into a mosaic of habitat: ponds and scrapes; wet grassland; meadows;

woodland and scrub. Biodiversity will be protected and encouraged, and struggling species will repopulate the new landscape. The first steps in this long term project have been taken through the planting, with the help of The Woodland Trust, of a Jubilee Wood, and many Ashtead residents, including a local Scout troop, turned out in November 2012 to plant hundreds of young trees in the meadows. The plan also includes a “small river” restoration project involving pond and scrape work, bunding, regrading and channel realignment of sections of the Rye Brook. The work so far has already been recognised and Ashtead Rye Meadows Wetlands has been accepted as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SCNI). The project has received invaluable help from many environmental bodies such as The Environment Agency, Surrey Wildlife Trust, The Woodland Trust, the Lower Mole Countryside Trust. and Ashtead Residents Association. A new organisation, Friends of Ashtead Rye Meadows Wetlands was set up earlier this year and has recruited its own team of volunteers. The Group has received generous financial assistance from The Community Foundation for Surrey towards the construction of a new bridge over the Rye Brook, and from the Lower Mole Countryside Trust for essential tools, The construction of the ponds

and scrapes in particular will involve significant cost and more funds are needed. Financial or “in kind” donations would be greatly appreciated by the Friends. Daphne says, “ I am delighted to have gathered together a team of very enthusiastic people of all ages who are helping me to create what I hope will be a lasting ecological development for the preservation and enhancement of wildlife in the area and which will form part of a natural corridor along the Rye, linking Epsom, Ashtead, Leatherhead and Bookham Commons.

Welcome to Lanesborough

anesborough loves visitors. Not just on official Open Days where prospective parents and boys are always welcomed, but throughout the year. Visitors bring valuable tools with them; their stories, their experiences, alternative view points, wisdom and perhaps most important of all, inspiration. A visitor can open a boy’s eyes to an area of life or a part of history that he has never previously encountered, sparking off new ideas, adventure, and a lifelong fascination. Recent visitors to Lanesborough include an Olympic rower, an author, a drummer and a group of world war veterans. Their stories have inspired and excited not only the boys but the whole school, inspiring related projects and creative work. George Nash, the 2012 Olympic rowing bronze medalist in the pair and ex-Lanesborough boy, completely captivated the boys with his talk about winning his bronze medal. To talk to George in person was incredibly exciting for the boys who still remember his parting message: “If you have anything you want to do, however rare, or difficult, you should never give up.” The faces of the boys as they received their treasured autograph and held George’s Olympic medal showed a generation that has been truly inspired. Equally captivating were the stories from seven Normandy war veterans who talked to the boys about their terrifying exploits during World War Two. One recounted his experiences at Dunkirk, another vividly portrayed being on board a sloop in a Force 11 gale in the North Atlantic. Another described the scenes at Sword Beach and the boys were thrilled when he presented the school with a rock he brought back from the beach 69 years ago. Bearing their medals with great pride the war veterans made a huge impression on the boys.

Music and drama attract visitors from varying disciplines and provide great entertainment and learning for the boys. A West African Djembe drumming workshop for the younger boys promoted a surge of interest in percussion, so often overlooked in the decision of which musical instrument to learn to play. Inspiring interest in a variety of topics is key at Lanesborough, and is integrated into the wide and interesting curriculum that never stands still. Lanesborough boys are keen to discover, explore, learn and enthusiastic staff and peripatetic tutors encourage and fuel their interests. Lanesborough’s recent ISI Inspection stated: ‘The pupils’ personal development is outstandingly well developed and fostered by the school’s positive ethos. Parkside School If you could find a school where your son was eternally happy, where the teachers really cared about getting the very best from every single boy, where the facilities were fantastic and the ‘results’ even better, you might think... ‘yes’, right?

Like adults, sometimes our children need some additional support, a little bit of emotional TLC. Exams, sporting pressures, relationship issues – be it with their parents, peers or siblings – can all take their toll on our children leading to emotions such as anger, stress, anxiety and depression; and deterioration in behaviour. We all want the best for our children and for them to get the most from their education and I’m sure it is no surprise to hear that learning is best achieved when emotionally stable children are introduced to supportive educational environments. However, even with the best resources and the most highly qualified and experienced teachers, children will not achieve their best if they are anxious, unsettled or find themselves isolated from their peer group. Beauty bulletin :: Beauty shirkers It’s official, British women aren’t spending enough time with their sinks. More than one third fail to wash their face every day (37%), according to a recent survey by Asda Beauty, and almost a quarter (22%) of females admit leaving their make-up on when they go to bed. While Scots top the chart for sticking to the best skincare routine in the UK, London ladies came up worst, with only 8% of those surveyed admitting to the same regular daily rituals. Welsh women opted for the quickest cleansing routine, with 12% using face wipes on a daily basis.

Looking at our weather is a national pastime. For some the effects of weather have dramatic effects, particularly those of us who work or spend a high proportion of our lives outside. It is obvious to us all that nature is in full control of our lives, we can minimise this control, but in reality this is very limited.

ho would have thought back in May that we were about to experience one of the best summers in living memory! Up to then we had very dull and cold weather, with temperatures well below the average. What made this worse, was last year it was hard to believe we had even had a summer. An early hot spring within weeks was followed by rain and yet more rain. So bad was this that that the year ended as one of the wettest on record. However the upside of this was that many plants looked lush and green throughout the year, an unusual occurrence. When I walked the nursery in May this year depression set in. Due to the cold Spring, plants which usually would be reaching their peak condition looked as if they were barely alive. It was looking highly doubtful that many of these plants would perform at all this year and the outlook for summer was bleak. In usual years May marks the peak selling season for plants, with June showing very dramatic decline in customer numbers and sales of plants, Here we were with our peak season coming to an end and many plant nurseries across the country were rightfully worrying about the plants that were still left on the nursery beds. Since then the good weather has brought the growth of the plants on well, but too late for

the normal level of sales. For the gardener this has resulted in some great offers on plants. Tree and shrub growers are now clearing space for the new years crop. They are not alone as even we are having to clear quantities of trees. Some commentators suggest you should be beware clearance plants, but this is a generalised statement. This is a great time to get some great value for money quality bargains. Large plants need to be sold not because of their perishable nature, but to ensure there is space to allow new crops to be planted, Without this sequential cropping, in a few years there will be few or no smaller trees available as there will not be space for the new plants to grow.
