Welcome... The independent school system in the UK is one of the finest in the world, and you are fortunate to have some of the best schools in the country right on your doorstep. In today’s economic climate, making the right choice for your child’s education is of paramount importance. Sometimes every parent needs a helping hand in deciding what is best for their children. Our Education Life series is an invaluable resource for any parent considering private education. Many schools will be holding further open days during 2013. Encourage your children to come with you and get their feedback after each visit.

Take a notebook with you and write down the positive or negative things your child discovers from each school. This will be a useful tool when you are comparing notes! It also provides an insight into the way a child sees a prospective future school This month sees the third of our three part Education Life series which will next appear in the February 2014 issues. If you would like your prestigious school to appear in our stunning guides, please contact... Anita@fishmediagroup.co.uk for schools in Surrey or Vanessa@fishmediagroup.co.uk for schools in London.

Tour of Britain Cycle Race

Surrey will host the penultimate stage of this year’s Tour of Britain when the race sweeps the UK this September

S

urrey County Council can reveal the 96 mile stage will take place on Saturday, September 21, starting in Epsom and finishing in a final climb up Guildford High Street. The rider line up has not yet been announced but previous competitors include former world champion and Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish and Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins. This year’s Surrey stage is even tougher than 2012 with daunting climbs over the first half of the race before some flat-out sprints in the run up to Guildford. The King of the Mountain climbs and sprint locations will be announced in May. John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member of Transport and Environment, said: “This will be the second year running Surrey has welcomed the Tour of Britain and once again the bone juddering Guildford High Street will prove a scintillating finish for both riders and spectators. “We proved last year with the Olympic cycle races and the Tour of Britain that Surrey is adept at hosting high profile sporting events. There is a huge appetite for cycling in Surrey and I have no doubt our county will be the highlight of the Tour. Record numbers in the event’s history turned out in Surrey last year, some 225,000.” The Surrey stage of The Tour of Britain 2013 is sponsored by Welmede, Tarmac UK and Foxhills.

6 SEPTEMBER 2013

Hugh Roberts, Chief Executive of The Tour of Britain, added: “As a Surrey based company we are delighted to once again have a home stage, particularly one with such an iconic finish as Guildford. Surrey will once again provide a perfect backdrop for the Tour as it draws towards the conclusion of the 2013 race.” Last year’s Tour of Britain generated almost £7.2 million for Surrey’s economy and was watched by almost one million television viewers on each of the event’s eight days. This year’s race will again be televised. The Tour of Britain 2013 will begin in Scotland on 15 September and end in London seven days later on Sunday, September 22. Further UK-wide details can be found here. The Surrey stage will pass through the towns and villages including Epsom, Leatherhead, East Horsley, Dorking, Holmbury St Mary, Cranleigh, Shere, Send, Woking, Ottershaw, Chobham, Knaphill, Normandy, Elstead, Churt, Farnham and Guildford. The race will be pass through the boroughs and districts of Epsom and Ewell, Mole Valley, Waverley, Guildford, Woking, Runnymede, Surrey Heath. www.gosurrey.info/tour-of-britain

An exotic new addition to the fair, as well as a fresh area of antiques collecting, is Fallenstars Meteorites exhibiting fragments from outer space ranging from small individual pieces to large sculptural iron meteorites. Following a 20year career as the antiques and fine art buyer for Harrods, David Wackett used his experience in finding the rare and unusual for the rich and famous and his stand includes individual specimens from the recent fall in Chelyabinsk, Russia (as seen on YouTube) and the Campo Del Cielo meteorite shower which fell in Argentina over 4,000 years ago. 8 SEPTEMBER 2013

There are around 30 exhibitors in the fair, with new faces including Galerie Arabesque from Stuttgart, Jeroen Markies from Forest Row, East Sussex, Ottery Antiques from Somerset, HIckmet Fine Arts from London’s Portobello Road and Ashleigh House Fine Arts from Saffron Walden. A general mix of antiques is on display from furniture to paintings, Oriental textiles to antique rugs and kilims, fragments from outer space, garden stoneware to jewellery as well as silver, bronze, ceramics, glass, antique reference books and many other decorative works of art. An appropriate highlight of the fair is a watercolour of a Surrey view by popular Victorian artist, Myles Birket Foster RWS (1825-1899) which can be found on John Robertson’s stand. ‘The Footpath by Waterlane’ was exhibited at The Royal Watercolour Society Summer Exhibition of 1892 and is thought to be of a view close to BIrket Foster’s magnificent house at Witley in Surrey. Among the furniture on show is an exceptional linen press, c 1765 from Ottery Antiques, Art Deco and Art Nouveau furniture and accessories from Jeroen Markies, a fine and

rare George III period carved mahogany four poster bed, probably made by Gillows of Lancaster, from W R Harvey & Co (Antiques) Ltd and a 19th century Somerset stick Windsor oak chair from Melody Antiques. A special guest to look out for is awardwinning artist Angel Dominguez who has illustrated a limited edition book of much loved poems of cats and owls, Purr & Feather, being launched at the fair. This new boxed book and the original illustrations are for sale on Art of the Imagination’s stand. Refreshments are available throughout the day and ample free parking makes it easy to spend a relaxed and fulfilling day enjoying all that is on offer. The fair exudes a friendly atmosphere and the dealers are more than willing to impart their knowledge or help source specific items. It is a haven for interior decorators, able to find everything under one roof where craftsmanship and authenticity are key elements. Prices range from £50 to £65,000. www.esherhallfair.com A ‘2 for 1’ TICKET OFFER IS AVAILABLE TO READERS OF ESHER LIFE ON PRODUCTION OF THIS ARTICLE.

Epsom and Ewell Borough

Family Fun Day

Sunday 22nd September 2013 at Hook Road Arena from 12 noon One of the main aims of Rotary is to help the community and back in 2011 the Rotary clubs of Epsom & Ewell decided to organise a Family Fun Day with the help and support of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council.

22nd

SEPT

2013

T

he main aim was to promote the great amount of voluntary and community work undertaken by Borough local residents. We also wanted to give local charities, community groups and businesses an opportunity to promote themselves and in the case of charities to raise money for their particular good cause. Finally we wanted the day to be an event of family entertainment and fun at a reasonable cost, with many free arena displays. We organised the first Family Fun Day to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Borough and with their support and assistance we are delighted to run an even bigger event this year with over 120 pitches. We welcome the Southern Golden Retriever Display Team, Huxleys Birds of Prey, many vintage cars and coaches and welcome back the GB Martial Arts Association, the Pegasus Parachute Display Team, a children’s fun fair and food court. We also will have a marquee run by the Borough, with many free activities and entertainment for all the family celebrating the diverse cultures in and around Epsom and Ewell. We are sure there will be something of interest for all the family. The family dog show also attracted great interest last year and

12 SEPTEMBER 2013

so we are again running this event between 1-30 & 3-30 in their own arena. If you have a pet dog you would like to show, please bring your dog along. We cannot express our gratitude enough to our sponsors for their support, for without it the day would not take place and money raised could not go to the many worthwhile causes. Programmes which are entry tickets can be purchased from Ebbisham Centre Library and Bourne Hall at £2 per adult (entry on the day of the event at the gate will be £4) and other outlets, but accompanied children under 12 are free.

FURTHER INFORMATION For further information about the event including details of our sponsors, many of the pitch holders and advertisers and additional outlets where you can buy programmes please see our event web site www.epsomfunday.net. ASHTEAD RYE MEADOWS WETLANDS… A site of nature conservation importance

G

eorge and Daphne Burnett have lived in Ashtead for more than 25 years. In 1990 they purchased a 45 acre parcel of land from the estate of their neighbour, the late Lord Barnby, in keeping with his wish that the estate be retained under a single ownership. Since that time Daphne has managed the land, which has principally been used for the grazing of horses. Her concern has been to ensure the proper maintenance of the land and the retention of its rural appearance, situated as it is adjacent to Ashtead Common. The lower meadows, extending to some 14 acres, form a relatively narrow strip 800 metres long which is bisected by the Rye Brook, a tributary of the River Mole, and a designated “Main River” by the Environment Agency. Over the last century, urban & agricultural development has had a detrimental effect on the Rye Brook with the result that it supported little wildlife. Yet it is on a flood plain and ideal for supporting a wide range of habitats. Daphne’s vision is to restore the natural processes such as erosion, the depositing of minerals and the occasional flooding of wetland habitats, which would secure a healthy long term future for both wildlife & people. The proposal is that this corridor along the Rye will be transformed into a mosaic of habitat: ponds and scrapes; wet grassland; meadows;

14 SEPTEMBER 2013

woodland and scrub. Biodiversity will be protected and encouraged, and struggling species will repopulate the new landscape. The first steps in this long term project have been taken through the planting, with the help of The Woodland Trust, of a Jubilee Wood, and many Ashtead residents, including a local Scout troop, turned out in November 2012 to plant hundreds of young trees in the meadows. The plan also includes a “small river” restoration project involving pond and scrape work, bunding, regrading and channel realignment of sections of the Rye Brook. The work so far has already been recognised and Ashtead Rye Meadows Wetlands has been accepted as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SCNI). The project has received invaluable help from many environmental bodies such as The Environment Agency, Surrey Wildlife Trust, The Woodland Trust, the Lower Mole Countryside Trust. and Ashtead Residents Association. A new organisation, Friends of Ashtead Rye Meadows Wetlands was set up earlier this year and has recruited its own team of volunteers. The Group has received generous financial assistance from The Community Foundation for Surrey towards the construction of a new bridge over the Rye Brook, and from the Lower Mole Countryside Trust for essential tools, The construction of the ponds

F E AT U R E

and scrapes in particular will involve significant cost and more funds are needed. Financial or “in kind” donations would be greatly appreciated by the Friends. Daphne says, “ I am delighted to have gathered together a team of very enthusiastic people of all ages who are helping me to create what I hope will be a lasting ecological development for the preservation and enhancement of wildlife in the area and which will form part of a natural corridor along the Rye, linking Epsom, Ashtead, Leatherhead and Bookham Commons.

2013 Vintage clothing and accessories seem to be getting more and more popular by the day. From little vintage shops to stadium-sized kilo vintage fairs, the proliferation of suppliers means that finding a perfect vintage piece can be a daunting task.

H

ours, days or even weeks of rummaging through piles of old, musty, moth-bitten garments or endlessly searching ebay and clicking through hundreds of Etsy startups mean that vintage shopping is, well, hard work. And yet, finding a beautiful vintage dress with a story to tell is one of the most rewarding shopping experiences. Did she wear it on a first date? How long did it take her to save for it? Did she fall in love with it like I did? All rather romantic ideas, admittedly. Just as a beautiful vintage dress has a story to tell, so too does vintage jewellery – and arguably more so. Very few things are more sentimental to woman than a beautiful piece of jewellery, often given as a gift by someone special or as a token of love. Yet, quality examples of genuine vintage jewellery can be surprisingly difficult to find both on the high street and online. So obvious that it is easy to miss, auction houses offer the perfect solution to the difficulty one may encounter in the hunt for the perfect vintage piece of jewellery. With hundreds of items that have been beautifully photographed and verified by specialists, it would be virtually impossible to not find something to fall in love with in one of Fellows Vintage Jewellery & Accessories auctions. Taking place six times per year, this auction offers gorgeous pieces from the 18th century onwards. The best part - you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your living

20 SEPTEMBER 2013

room as all of Fellows auctions are available to view and bid online. You also don’t have to worry about bidding on an item and then opening the parcel to find something unexpected. All of the items have detailed condition reports – if the report says you are bidding on a slightly worn Victorian ring, then that will be exactly what you receive. Shakudo, cameos, French jet, agate, lockets, paste, as well as an impressive selection of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian are just some of the styles of jewellery on offer. You’ll also find designer jewellery and accessories from more modern designers such as Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. Novelties and hair accessories also feature, as well as vintage furs, shoes and bags. So the next time you feel like updating your wardrobe with a vintage twist, forget a fight-to-the-death for the best picks at a packed vintage fair or and rummage through a sporadically-stocked vintage shop, visit www.fellows.co.uk and browse the huge catalogue from the comfort of your own home. Welcome to Lanesborough

L

anesborough loves visitors. Not just on official Open Days where prospective parents and boys are always welcomed, but throughout the year. Visitors bring valuable tools with them; their stories, their experiences, alternative view points, wisdom and perhaps most important of all, inspiration. A visitor can open a boy’s eyes to an area of life or a part of history that he has never previously encountered, sparking off new ideas, adventure, and a lifelong fascination. Recent visitors to Lanesborough include an Olympic rower, an author, a drummer and a group of world war veterans. Their stories have inspired and excited not only the boys but the whole school, inspiring related projects and creative work. George Nash, the 2012 Olympic rowing bronze medalist in the pair and ex-Lanesborough boy, completely captivated the boys with his talk about winning his bronze medal. To talk to George in person was incredibly exciting for the boys who still remember his parting message: “If you have anything you want to do, however rare, or difficult, you should never give up.” The faces of the boys as they received their treasured autograph and held George’s Olympic medal showed a generation that has been truly inspired. Equally captivating were the stories from seven Normandy war veterans who talked to the boys about their terrifying exploits during World War Two. One recounted his experiences at Dunkirk, another vividly portrayed being on board a sloop in a Force 11 gale in the North Atlantic. Another described the scenes at Sword Beach and the boys were thrilled when he presented the school with a rock he brought back from the beach 69 years ago. Bearing their medals with great pride the war veterans made a huge impression on the boys.

Music and drama attract visitors from varying disciplines and provide great entertainment and learning for the boys. A West African Djembe drumming workshop for the younger boys promoted a surge of interest in percussion, so often overlooked in the decision of which musical instrument to learn to play. Inspiring interest in a variety of topics is key at Lanesborough, and is integrated into the wide and interesting curriculum that never stands still. Lanesborough boys are keen to discover, explore, learn and enthusiastic staff and peripatetic tutors encourage and fuel their interests. Lanesborough’s recent ISI Inspection stated: ‘The pupils’ personal development is outstandingly well developed and fostered by the school’s positive ethos. Their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent, and relationships between pupils and teachers, and between themselves are excellent.’ Situated in the leafy residential heart of Guildford, Lanesborough is housed in three late nineteenth century houses which have been updated and extended to provide extensive facilities for the boys. A homely atmosphere pervades throughout the main school which backs onto a large playing field, essential for lively boys with energy to burn. With all this space and a warm atmosphere, it is not surprising that visitors are keen to visit the school. That is music to the ears of Lanesborough boys who can’t wait to share the excitement that lies beyond the blue front door. Feltonfleet School Feltonfleet School is a co-educational independent day, weekly and flexi boarding school for up to 390 children aged 3-13 years. It has a deserved reputation as being in the very front rank of prep schools and prides itself on developing confident and happy children with a zest for life and a love of learning.

T

he school is situated on a beautiful 25 acre site of pine woodland, games fields and landscaped play areas, conveniently located near the A3 and A245 roads, providing easy access to both West London and the Walton and Weybridge areas. They also run daily coach and mini-bus services from a number of destinations. The school’s recent ISI Inspection Report (Jan 2013) highlights Feltonfleet’s excellence in all areas of educational provision. The school is extremely proud of the report which describes the pupils’ “exemplary attitudes to learning”, their “confidence”, “maturity” and their “excellent inter-personal skills”. Pastoral care is “of the highest quality” and the report goes on to describe the school’s team of dedicated and well qualified teachers as “exemplary role models” who “empower pupils to achieve their potential in and out of the classroom”. The report describes Feltonfleet as a school with “academic thoroughness and a strong work ethic”, where “pupils benefit from a varied and creative educational experience, in which talent is cultivated and service to others is the norm”. Headmaster, Mr Alastair Morrison, who joined Feltonfleet in September 2013 from Fettes Prep, Edinburgh, says, “We are delighted with the Inspection Report. It is a wonderful endorsement of all that is being done so very well in our special school. As a father to three young girls myself, I know that choosing the right schooling for one’s children is the most important decision parents will make. I encourage you to visit Feltonfleet and see for yourselves, our wonderful learning community in action”. Prospective parents are invited to visit the school at their forthcoming Open Morning on Saturday 28th September 9.30am-

12 noon. Please see the school’s website or contact the admissions registrar, Mrs Sue Lewin, if you require further details. Feltonfleet is a co-educational school because they have every confidence in the benefit that girls and boys reap from learning, playing and working alongside each other. Their firm belief is that co-education prepares young people to build successful relationships and better equips them for a life spent at work. In a nutshell, Feltonfleet offers a balanced, challenging and wide-ranging curriculum. Their “excellent”-rated boarding provision, which includes breakfast and after school care for day pupils, allows boarders to “flourish” whilst offering flexibility and support to working parents. Academic standards are high and pupils are always encouraged to do their best. High quality teaching and excellent pastoral care underpin the unique family atmosphere at Feltonfleet, where every individual child is encouraged to uncover talents and develop their abilities. The school is proud of its excellent academic results, the creativity of their pupils, their sporting record and the increasing number of senior school scholarships awarded to their pupils, (16 in 2013). We encourage you to visit them in person or online, to find out more. You can download the complete ISI Inspection report from their website. A Happy and Challenging Education Located in the centre of the historic town of Guildford, the RGS is an independent day school for boys aged 11 to 18. The School dates its foundation from 1509 and as a flagship for boys’ education has a national reputation for academic excellence but also prides itself on its traditional values of decency and respect, supported by outstanding pastoral care. RGS boys have the opportunity to experience the widest range of enriching activities providing them with a broad and balanced education.

including 34 offers in the recent round of admissions for 2013 entry.

A

cademic excellence is at the very heart of the School’s philosophy. The RGS aims to encourage the growth of intellectual curiosity and creativity and to inculcate a life-long love of learning in the boys. Accomplished members of staff tailor their teaching to provide a stimulating, inspiring education which fulfils boys’ need for pace, variety and healthy competition. Boys are given the space and opportunity to mature and develop at their own pace and, most importantly, they enjoy a happy and challenging education in a supportive, positive environment. The RGS is consistently one of the top five boys’ schools in the country at both A Level and GCSE: in 2013, over 80% of all grades at A Level were achieved at grades A*/A with 31 boys securing three or more A* grades; over 93% of all GCSE results were passed at A*/A with 94 boys achieving straight A*/A grades. The School is extremely proud of its Oxbridge record. In the last six years over 200 offers have been achieved at Oxford and Cambridge 6 SEPTEMBER 2013

The School provides state-of-the-art facilities conducive to performance at the very highest level as well as to nurturing young talent and enthusiasm. Recent purpose-built developments to the site include the Art School, Auditorium, Music School, Sixth Form Centre and Sports Hall, all within the last ten years. In addition, the School has twenty-acre grounds at nearby Bradstone Brook and it is not unusual for the RGS to field over twenty teams on a Saturday, especially in the hockey and rugby seasons. RGS boys have achieved national and international honours in a wide variety of sports recently including rugby, sailing and shooting. The full extra-curricular programme encourages teamwork, leadership, and self-reliance. Opportunities abound through the Combined Cadet Force, Explorer Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and various other outdoor pursuits. There are three standard admissions points to the School: First Form (Year 7, 11+), Third Form (Year 9, 13+) and Sixth Form (Year 12, 16+). The annual Open Day takes place on Saturday 5 October 2013 from 10.00am to 12.30pm. Prospective pupils and their parents are warmly invited to meet the Headmaster and enjoy a tour by a current pupil, providing an insight into the rich diversity of the School. No advance booking is required. The School aims to make the education offered as widely available as possible. Generous means-tested bursaries, up to 100% remission, are available as well as academic, art, music and sports scholarships.

Parkside School If you could find a school where your son was eternally happy, where the teachers really cared about getting the very best from every single boy, where the facilities were fantastic and the ‘results’ even better, you might think... ‘yes’, right?

I

f you learned that the ethos of this school was not ‘academic success to the exclusion of all else’ but one of ‘inclusive, allround education, where the learning does not always come from a book, but which still achieved end-game success’, then you’d think ‘definitely yes’. And then when you discover that this school does actually exists, on the outskirts of Cobham, serving the local community since 1879, you’d think ‘we should go take a look’. Nestling in a big loop of the River Mole, Parkside is based in and around a mid-eighteenth century Palladian manor house, surrounded by 45 acres of gardens and playing fields. There is space here for boys to be boys, plenty of it, and that actually makes a big difference to a boy’s education, whether they, or you, realise it at the time. Parkside is very much a traditional prep school, but with very modern thinking. The curriculum is not just geared towards exam success (though that is what it undoubtedly achieves); it is geared more towards the rounded individual, with everything in balance and where manners and courtesy are just as important as academic rigour and sporting endeavour. No one element of a boy’s education comes at the expense of the others, but every boy is encouraged to

shine in whatever aspect of life he has either an interest in or an aptitude for. Success on the tennis court or the hockey pitch? There for the taking. Scholarship to senior school? Absolutely (and plenty of them, as it happens to the likes of Reed’s, St. Johns, Cranleigh, Hampton, Lancing, Claremont, et al). Active life within the community? Of course, be it playing chess, swimming, fencing, gardening or cricket or just about anything in between. All boys grow mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally and academically at Parkside, both in the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage, in the performance hall, even on the river, and all within a pastoral framework that sets them on absolutely the right path for life. Continual investment overseen by the Board of Governors has seen huge strides taken over recent years in infrastructure and facilities, with a tremendous 100-tiered-seat Performing Arts Hall, iPad-equipped library (still with thousands of proper books), science and IT facilites to die for, indoor swimming pool, huge sports hall, and even an on-site coeducational nursery taking little ones from the age of two. Ultimately, though, however good the facilities are, boys will not get the best from them without great teachers who can inspire, encourage, praise and enthuse. And that is exactly what the teachers at Parkside do. Go along, take a look, and decide for yourself. Because only a visit can do justice to the jewel that Parkside School undoubtedly is. Looking after your child’s

emotional wellbeing

N

ow in its’ 7th year, The Olive Branch Group is continuing its work providing Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to individuals, couples and groups. Founder of The Olive Branch Group, Karen Thomas highlights the importance of providing emotional support for children, how this can lead to a better education and the benefits of family therapy. “In addition to working with adults, The Olive Branch Group works alongside children and young people. Like adults, sometimes our children need some additional support, a little bit of emotional TLC. Exams, sporting pressures, relationship issues – be it with their parents, peers or siblings – can all take their toll on our children leading to emotions such as anger, stress, anxiety and depression; and deterioration in behaviour. We all want the best for our children and for them to get the most from their education and I’m sure it is no surprise to hear that learning is best achieved when emotionally stable children are introduced to supportive educational environments. However, even with the best resources and the most highly qualified and experienced teachers, children will not achieve their best if they are anxious, unsettled or find themselves isolated from their peer group. The Olive Branch Group specialises in providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to children with emotional [and/or behavioural] difficulties. We have a track record of working with schools and supporting families to help children tackle problems that might otherwise prevent them from making the most of their education. We work either directly in conjunction with schools or privately outside of the school environment. In addition to offering CBT on a one to one basis, we have come

10 SEPTEMBER 2013

to realise that sometimes a more holistic approach is needed. As such we have just launched our ‘Family Consultancy’ option. This allows us to make an assessment not just of the child but also of the family and school environment. It is simply not always enough to offer therapy to a child without looking at the broader picture. The ‘Family Consultancy’ option allows us to have a more in depth look at issues like; parenting difficulties such as eating, sleeping, homework and behaviour management, interpersonal problems with peers, siblings, parents or other adults, issues at school be it academic, social or the provision of additional support, whilst also using CBT to help adjust any emotional difficulties. At The Olive Branch Group we know what a positive role CBT can have in empowering the most vulnerable of children and have witnessed first-hand the impact this can have on their ability to learn and enjoy their time at home and school. We also know that fixing one part of the puzzle isn’t always enough. If you feel that your child would benefit from our input, whether on a one to one basis or if you feel that need additional support as a family, please do not hesitate to contact me.” Karen Thomas olivebranchgroup@yahoo.co.uk www.olivebranchgroup.co.uk 07738713545

WHY COMPROMISE… Can parents have it all? Amanda Cooper and Alison O’Neill from Surrey Housekeepers believe they can.

What advice can you give to parents seeking a great housekeeper or nanny who will stay for the long term? The key to finding the right person for your family is honesty, lay your cards on the table as to what you feel you need, be realistic with your expectations and the duties you need carried out, the hours, the responsibilities, benefits, bonuses, living arrangements, holidays including payment. If you are unreasonable it will put you back at square one and you will find yourself always disappointed with the situation you find yourself in. If you recognize this simple fact, you are more likely to hire an individual that is a perfect match for you and your family. And when children go to school or mum goes back to work… what choices do parents have? The nanny/housekeeper role is a popular one as it’s all about consolidating. Enrolling one person to take on both roles offers complete cover in all areas of a busy household. Engaging an experienced individual who can multi task is a great option and one that is becoming more popular than ever. It’s a simple solution that ticks the boxes for busy families. How can I get the best from my new housekeeper/nanny It is so important to stress that your new employee is a professional who needs to be treated as an equal at all times. You are striving for continuous communication which will help build up the employer-employee relationship, which in turn will lead to a long lasting loving relationship for you and your children. Do not take

advantage of your nanny or housekeeper, reward and compliment when the need arises. If you arrive home early and want to spend time with your children, allow your nanny/housekeeper to leave early rather than give her jobs to do to fill her time, you the parent will be rewarded when the nanny is asked to do something above the call of duty from time to time. It’s all about giving and taking like any good working relationship. What makes Surrey Housekeepers and Puddleduck Nannies different? Character matching is intuitive and home visits are an excellent assessment of what’s required. It’s about building up a relationship with the client and fully understanding what they need. We have learned through experience how one housekeeper/nanny does not fit all families. We are brutally honest with our clients and registered staff. It’s the only way long term relationships are formed. On the very rare occasion we can’t fulfill the brief, we admit defeat rather than play the numbers game. It’s all about trust. What other services can you offer families? We recognized the need for a high street venue and our central Esher offices provide a neutral environment for individuals to meet potential members of staff. From cooks, chauffeurs, housekeepers, nannies to all round relocation. We can deliver on our promise to provide an outstanding service to families seeking the very best in private staff.

Are leg veins a problem for you?

Or are facial veins a problem ?

The Cosmetic Doctors Company are delighted to now offer Microsclerotherapy - an effective treatment to safely eliminate unsightly leg veins. The Cosmetic Doctors Company offers a thorough assessment and diagnosis of your veins to exclude underlying problems in order to offer the best treatment option for you.

The Cosmetic Doctors Company also offers ThermaVeinÂŽ an instant safe and permanent removal of facial veins. What is ThermaVein? ThermaVein is exclusive technology, very simple, safe and the most effective treatment of facial veins.

Thread veins and varicose veins? 50% of the population will develop problems with their leg veins during their life. Though unsightly, they are unlikely to cause symptoms or medical problems and are mostly genetic.

What results can I expect? The results are instantunlike so many similar treatments that can take weeks to work!

What is Micro-sclerotherapy? Micro-sclerotherapy is a safe, painless and well established treatment for thread veins on the legs. A solution is injected with a tiny needle, very superficially into the veins, causing the lining of the vein to break down. This damage to the vein wall triggers a healing response which over several weeks causes the vein to close and fade away.

Are the results permanent? The veins that are successfully treated will not recover but this is a treatment for the symptoms not a cure for the underlying causes so new veins may develop over time.

Are the results permanent? The treatment will remove visible signs of the condition and in most cases they will not recur. However the underlying cause of the condition may lead to new areas developing.

What results can I expect? Everyone responds differently to the treatment, some patients need more treatments than others. Most can see a difference between one and four treatments.

Is there any special aftercare? You may resume normal activities immediately. You will be given special hosiery in a choice of colours to wear for a week after the treatment.

Is there special aftercare? As we promote caring for your skin with the very best skincare available – we recommend Zo Skin Health products. Especially important after treatment.

Microsclerotherapy Proven treatment Safe and painless ormal activities can be N resumed immediately

Summer

Saviours Undo the damage caused by a summer of heatwaves and holidays. Lisa Haynes prescribes some post-sun beauty cures for your skin and hair.

F

ridge magnets and postcards may not be the only mementos of your summer holiday. Frizzy locks and sun-parched skin are common aftereffects of a sun-filled vacation period. Just as we stock up on SPF potions before heading out into the sunshine, looking after skin and hair post-exposure is just as important. You may be looking tanned and gorgeous as summer draws to an end, but that ‘healthy glow’ is actually a sign that your skin is responding to UV damage, when melanin (our body’s natural sunscreen) moves towards the outer layers of the skin, making it darker. Restore and revive with these postsun saviours. Frazzled hair Symptoms: Frizzy texture, split ends and a dehydrated mane thanks to UV exposure and excessive heat. Solution: “Treat your hair to a nourishing weekly intensive treatment or mask that will feed your tresses,” recommends Norris Ogario, founder and creative director of Ogario salon. “For added therapy, pop on a shower cap after applying the mask to trap in the moisture and encourage the

Tried & tested Accentuate your summer glow and make skin sparkle with a bronze dry oil. Our testers try three pots of gold: :: The Body Shop Honey Bronze Shimmering Dry Oil, £16 for 100ml (www. thebodyshop.co.uk) This lightweight oil is non-greasy with a gorgeous smell and glittery finish that left my limbs sparkling. It’s also available in two shades, making it suitable for pale skin tones. Left and right: Images courtesy of PA Photo/Thinkstock

3/5

:: NARS Body Glow, £44 for 120ml (www.narscosmetics.co.uk) Best reserved for those with a medium to dark skin tone or tan. The deliciously fragrant oil made my tan look more intense and glossy and didn’t have an obvious shimmering, glittery finish, so it was more of a grown-up glow.

5/5

:: Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse OR Multi-Usage Dry Oil Golden Shimmer, £34 for 50ml (uk.nuxe.com) My skin instantly looked and felt more hydrated after using this golden shimmer. The sparkle is pale and subtle when it catches the light but I’m most impressed with its incredible skin softening qualities.

4/5 ingredients to absorb faster and penetrate deeper into the shaft to leave locks shiny and manageable.” SOS: There’s only one thing for it if your ends are looking beyond repair - a trim. Split ends will impede healthy growth so just half an inch snipped off will make your hair stronger in the long run. Burnt-out skin Symptoms: Dull, dry and lacklustre skin due to a build-up of sunscreen over the summer. Solution: “Use a gentle body exfoliator that contains alpha hydroxy acids or fruit enzymes that will help purge product buildup and remove dead skin cells to pep up bronzed limbs,” suggests Jill Zander, founder of Jill Zander Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. “If you want to keep skin soft, smooth and glowing, a tan extender will also help boost your glow.” SOS: Embrace a body oil daily, using on slightly damp skin for extra absorption. Choose one with restorative ingredients such as evening primrose to boost your skin’s structure and elasticity. Sun spots Symptoms: Dark marks on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip from over-exposure to the sun. Solution: “To combat pigmentation and sun spots, use an even skin tone corrector to help fade away summer splotches and give a more even skin tone,” says B. skincare expert Ian Baynes. “It’s also important to protect the skin with a moisturiser containing SPF daily, no matter what the weather outside.” SOS: If your sun spots and pigmentation marks are starting to affect your confidence, look into a professional laser treatment, which can permanently dissolve them using gentle targeted micro-pulse technology.

Dehydrated face Symptoms: Tight-feeling skin which may have a crepey appearance, especially if you’ve suffered sunburn. Solution: “Dehydrated skin tends to look worn and lined so you need to restore balance with a routine that includes a serum, mask and moisturiser,” advises make-up artist Jemma Kidd. “Use a night cream that stimulates cell regeneration. Skin repairs itself at night and the temperature of the skin increases during sleep, aiding the absorption of active ingredients.” SOS: The combination of planes, pina coladas and sun-baking can lead to a seriously dehydrated complexion. Book in for a post-holiday facial, such as a HydraFacial (www.hydrafacial.co.uk), for instantly hydrated and radiant skin.

Beauty bulletin :: Beauty shirkers It’s official, British women aren’t spending enough time with their sinks. More than one third fail to wash their face every day (37%), according to a recent survey by Asda Beauty, and almost a quarter (22%) of females admit leaving their make-up on when they go to bed. While Scots top the chart for sticking to the best skincare routine in the UK, London ladies came up worst, with only 8% of those surveyed admitting to the same regular daily rituals. Welsh women opted for the quickest cleansing routine, with 12% using face wipes on a daily basis.

Looking at our weather is a national pastime. For some the effects of weather have dramatic effects, particularly those of us who work or spend a high proportion of our lives outside. It is obvious to us all that nature is in full control of our lives, we can minimise this control, but in reality this is very limited.

W

ho would have thought back in May that we were about to experience one of the best summers in living memory! Up to then we had very dull and cold weather, with temperatures well below the average. What made this worse, was last year it was hard to believe we had even had a summer. An early hot spring within weeks was followed by rain and yet more rain. So bad was this that that the year ended as one of the wettest on record. However the upside of this was that many plants looked lush and green throughout the year, an unusual occurrence. When I walked the nursery in May this year depression set in. Due to the cold Spring, plants which usually would be reaching their peak condition looked as if they were barely alive. It was looking highly doubtful that many of these plants would perform at all this year and the outlook for summer was bleak. In usual years May marks the peak selling season for plants, with June showing very dramatic decline in customer numbers and sales of plants, Here we were with our peak season coming to an end and many plant nurseries across the country were rightfully worrying about the plants that were still left on the nursery beds. Since then the good weather has brought the growth of the plants on well, but too late for

the normal level of sales. For the gardener this has resulted in some great offers on plants. Tree and shrub growers are now clearing space for the new years crop. They are not alone as even we are having to clear quantities of trees. Some commentators suggest you should be beware clearance plants, but this is a generalised statement. This is a great time to get some great value for money quality bargains. Large plants need to be sold not because of their perishable nature, but to ensure there is space to allow new crops to be planted, Without this sequential cropping, in a few years there will be few or no smaller trees available as there will not be space for the new plants to grow.

plants no longer expending substantial amount of resources on maintaining leaves and growing branches they have plenty of resources to expend on maintain and developing their root systems. Roots grow and expand throughout the autumn and winter with the added advantage that soil temperatures remain significantly above air temperatures encouraging this process. Ensuring a well, established root system before air temperatures start to rise in the spring, will help guarantee a good performance. Visit your local nursery for a greener future. Autumn Natures time for planting!

Luckily for those of you interested in planting now is an ideal time to plant big plants, provided they are of the hardy type, which most are. With cooler temperatures reducing water loss, this makes looking after new acquisitions so much easier, reducing although not eliminating, the need for watering. With deciduous plants, those which lose their leaves over winter the need to water is reduced even further. Many people think that just because the top of these plants have gone into dormancy that the plants have shut down totally. This is far from the truth, with the
