FROM THE HELM

by DAVID WORSHAM

What does it take

TO WIN?

It’s hard to believe almost 30% of the 2017 tournaments are done and we are just over 100 days out from the National Championship! With 14 tournaments in July and August, there are many chances for anglers to make a move toward claiming a top spot in each Division. We hope you and your team plan to join us in Biloxi to crown the next National Champion. The Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino is the ideal location for the final event of the year. The amazing crew from Gorenflo’s Tackle Shop always go the extra mile to take care of the teams in any way they can. Basically, the only thing left to make the event perfect is you!

WHAT DOES IT TAKE?

Y

ou may have heard some of the following: you need to have a fast boat, be the first to the spot, or have the biggest baits and/ or expensive gear. Those things can create a competitive edge, but nothing can make up for preparation, patience, and luck. These are the common threads I notice in teams that consistently win or place at fishing tournaments. Being prepared can apply to so many aspects of tournament fishing. Many anglers make sure to have enough rigs tied, or extra bait and ice in case the bite is on. The wise angler will prepare not only for success, but also for potential setbacks. Sure, it’s important to have tackle and ice, but you should consider preparing for a fuse to blow, leaving you with power in only one motor. An extra fuse is cheap and easy to carry on board. Or maybe pack a backup cast net in case the unthinkable happens. There are many aspects of king fishing that are fast-paced, split second and that get your blood pumping! However, patience is a key virtue in the world of king fishing. What factors determine when to pack it in and head to a new spot. How do you fight wanting to tighten down the drag and hurry a fish through shark infested waters? When is the right time to gaff that fish? Patience and being cool under pressure can be the difference in landing or unintentionally releasing a big King. The only way to make it second nature is to get on the water, fish more tournaments, and put yourself in those situations to learn what works for you. Back at the scales after a tournament, I often hear, ‘We were right there! We were so close we could see him gaff the fish right at 8:00 a.m. this morning.’ A simple yet hard to swallow truth of fishing is that luck is typically involved. Being next to the guy who caught the winning fish can feel like torture sometimes. But I wonder, would you rather be in the right spot and not get the strike? Or rather go to another spot, fish alone and not have any action? The hard core competitive spirit that lives in SKA anglers causes frustration when a day on the water does not pan out in our favor. I know the feeling all too well. That feeling and passion is what drives us to get back on the water and give the next one everything we’ve got! We truly wish you and your crew the best of ‘Luck’ this season in your pursuit of victory. Tight lines,

rime fishing, a seafood festival, and philanthropy were three driving forces of the Downtown Showdown in West Palm Beach on May 20. In only three years the tournament has grown exponentially. "This event has grown from the daydream of five fishermen to one of the best fishing events in South Florida," said Downtown Showdown Cofounder Grant Portier." 26 SKA teams participated in the tournament. One full day of fishing began at 6 a.m. and boats had to be in line for weigh-in by 4:30 p.m. A seafood street festival started at 11 a.m. and over 10,000 people attended the festivities. The SKA is a big supporter of families, and many teams blend multi-generational families. In this tournament, two teens fishing with their fathers brought winning fish to the scales. The winner of the tournament was team Miss Michelle with Captain Shannon Kelleher. His 17-year old son Will caught a giant 60.20 king which easily secured the win for this team. Captain Shannon said, “This was the first king of the day, the second drift at about 7:40. Fred said, ‘Hey there’s a silver flash; I think it’s a big one.’ Wills line went off, and in about ten minutes

Southern Fishing Charities SOUTHERN FISHING CHARITIES (SFC) IS A CHARITABLE ARM OF THE DOWNTOWN SHOWDOWN EVENT AND WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE COFOUNDERS OF THE TOURNAMENT. Southern Fishing Charities (SFC) organizes and hosts outreach programs that support veterans. Based in South Florida, SFC partners with local organizations to create awareness and raise funds through fishing tournaments and related events. The SFC also brings the joy of fishing to veterans and their families with on-thewater fishing clinics from award-winning professional fishing teams. The Downtown Showdown is the organization’s largest fundraising event. In addition, organizers will distribute proceeds from the tournament to Lauren’s Kids and the Boy Scouts of America. Lauren’s Kids was founded by Lauren Book, who was a victim of sexual abuse. The aim of Lauren’s Kids is to prevent sexual abuse through education. They use school curriculums, speaking engagements and awareness campaigns to shed light on the issues. The 501(c) was founded in 2007 and is based in South Florida.

he got the biggest king we ever caught to the boat.” “Mark Reuwer gaffed the fish, and when pulling it in the boat, the gaff shot ripped out because of the weight of the fish. The fish went nuts when it came off the gaff, and it was game on once again. We were worried because the sharks were everywhere, but Will stayed calm and fought the fish back to the boat, in just a few minutes.” About the catch, Will said, “It felt amazing, I knew the fish was around 50 for sure when we got color on it the first time. However, when we stuck him with the gaff; I said that things 60! I had a feeling it was going to rip off the gaff when I saw how big he was and he did. After that, he ran two more times. Then they stuck him with two gaffs and pulled him over the rail into the boat; it was surreal. I knew there was a good chance it would be the winner as I've never seen a king that big.” Will said, “I'm lucky to have fished with my dad since I was so young. Many kids don't have the chance to experience the amazing feeling of catching their first sailfish or kingfish with their dads. Once we started tournament fishing, the thrills and the memories became bigger and better, like now winning the Downtown Showdown!” As Will looks toward the future, he says, “I'd love to run my own SKA boat and definitely plan on doing it. I've played many different sports at different skill levels, and there's nothing that

compares to the competitive atmosphere that takes place in SKA tournaments.” Captain Shannon said the team’s motto is, “Never give up,” and their goal for this year is to win division 10. This team has been with the SKA for three years now, and they would like to thank Yamaha Outboards, American Auto Marine Wiring, Rockford Fosgate, The Mad Hueys, Calypso Restaurant and Raw Bar, Bionic Bait, Taha Marine, Tuppens Marine, IGX Graphics, KMC Marine, Ronnie's Custom Carpet Cleaning, and Coastline Marine. Second place went to team How Ya Reelin with Captain Eric Neidorf. They brought in an excellent king weighing in at 45.20. Conditions sent them to Palm Beach County,

and they hooked the fish early with live bait. Jason Stelmacki reeled in the fish, and Captain Eric gaffed. They have been a part of the SKA for nine years. Captain Eric laughed, “I have too many fishing superstitions to write down. My goal for this year is to finish in the top five of every event.” He attributes successful fishing to 90% skill and preparation and 10% luck. How Ya Reelin wants to thank Yamaha Outboards, Loadmaster Aluminum Trailers, Chaos Fishing Rods, Tuppens Marine, Contender Boats, Hopkins-Carter Marine, El Capitan Fishing, Aw Tees, Surfmonkey Gear, Penn Fishing, Primo Liquors, CS Custom Lures, M-80 Supercharged Chum, Audio Logic Car-Marine Audio, Diamond Fishing, Beacon Group, Fully

Involved Marine, American Fishing Wire, RJ Boyle Studio and Gost. Team Young Guns with Captain Lance Irvine brought the third place 39.10 to the docks. Captain Lance’s son Hunter Irvine caught the fish. Recapping the day, Captain Lance said, “We caught the kingfish a little south of the Palm Beach inlet. Hunter and I had run the boat up from Fort Lauderdale the day before and had pre-fished that area and released a few good kings. We caught the fish around 10 a.m. on a goggleeye in 110- feet. Hunter fought the fish, we knew it was pushing 40 pounds, so when we saw we had a shot, Clayton gaffed the fish green, it shot under the boat, and the gaff snapped in half. We were panicked thinking the fish would get sharked or

meeting so many families that share our same passion of chasing kingfish.” Team Young Guns would like to thank Mercury Outboards, Contender Boats and Preferred Marine for all their support over the years. It’s a beautiful thing to see how the SKA fosters family relationships and encourages youth to pursue their passions.

we would pop it off. After a tense 10 minutes, we had another shot, and I gaffed it and pulled it over the rail with 4-foot of broken gaff still in it. You normally don't get a second chance in those situations, so we were very fortunate to put her in the fish bag. There were quite a few sharks around so when we have a gaff shot we take it!” Members of the SKA since 2002. Captain Lance said, “Our goal this year is to be consistent and always finish in the money. We can't wait for Biloxi and the National Championship. There is without a doubt luck in getting that good bite, but the teams that work hard and put in the most effort will always be in contention for the win year after year. Nothing beats time on the water and knowing where the fish are. One thing we always do before we leave the dock is pray; we pray for safe travels and good fishing.” Hunter has been fishing since he could hold a fishing rod and got his boaters license when he was 7-years old. As he grew, so did the size of his boats until he qualified to fish the National Championships at 13 years old aboard his 23-Contender with his team Young Guns Too. Hunter said his greatest accomplishment is his National Junior Champion Trophy in 2013 from the SKA. Additionally, he has had over 55 junior wins and top three finishes. Hunter is now 14, and he and his father have just finished a 31-Contender. His plans are to put together a team and fish competitively. Additionally, he wants to raise awareness for NF2 (Neurofibromatosis) by fishing for charity to provide funds for research. Captain Lance says, “I can't thank the SKA enough for having a tournament trail dedicated to family. Hunter has fished with me since he was just four years old and we have traveled the country making the most amazing memories fishing the trail and

Q&A When did you begin fishing? My dad began fishing with me when I was a small boy and I just never stopped. What type of fishing did you start with? I started freshwater and saltwater fishing but soon realized saltwater was my passion. How did you hear about the SKA? Back when the SKA was just talk about starting a series, George Summerlen spoke with a group of us at an Atlantic Beach tournament. What prompted you to join the SKA? I joined in the very beginning of the SKA, I felt like it was the perfect way to take tournament fishing to the next level. What do you like about tournament competition? Most of all I enjoy the fellowship with the other fisherman and it satisfies that competitive nature we all have. What is most challenging about tournament competition? The most challenging thing about tournament competition is the immense amount of preparation and patience it takes. Do you have any rituals or superstitions you use on the boat? On our boat, when we arrive at our fishing spot, we make Thomas do a fish dance and ask the Lord for a safe day. I always tell my guys, let the experience of being on the ocean and the amazing sites we get to see, be enough. If we catch a fish, that’s just a bonus.

16

Angler No. 3 : 2017

What is a common misconception about tournament competition? A lot of people think it is easy to compete in this sport and that the bigger boat you have the more competitive you will be. Remember, the boat doesn’t catch the fish and will only go where you take it. What is most rewarding about tournament fishing? The most rewarding thing about tournament fishing is winning or placing, of course, and being happy for the teams that did well that day. What are your goals/dreams with regards to tournament competition? I want to win a National Championship before I get too old to compete, but most of all, I’d like to have fellow competitors remember me as a good sport and a testimony to the Lord. Do you “fun fish” and if so, what species do you target? We do. I do a lot of inshore fishing in the off-season. I fish for trout, sheepshead and especially flounder gigging. What do you do when you’re not competing? When I’m not competing I just try to spend as much time as I can with my family. Tell us something most would be surprised to hear about you. I enjoy seeing young kids get into this sport and love supporting people who help children, such as, the Methodist Home for Children which is the charity we support with the Bone Suckin’ Sauce KMT we put on each year. My team and I try to do whatever we can to help other people whenever we can and expect nothing in return.

A MAJOR KINGFISH MIGRATION TAKES PLACE ALONG JACKSONVILLE BEACHES DURING THE HEAT OF SUMMER WHERE SPECIAL KINGFISH TACTICS ARE KEY.

Angler No. 3 : 2017

cloudy morning, paired with a brisk northeast wind made capturing baitfish difficult along the shallow beaches of Northeast Florida. King mackerel fishermen desperately looked for any signs that might point their anxious kingfish team to a nice school of menhaden, choice king mackerel baits for northeast Florida king mackerel. Particularly here in the shallow water depths, just beyond the surf It had been only a few days before that one of the largest king mackerel tournaments in the southeast had taken place here in these same waters, the 25th Annual Bell South Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament. July is often regarded as the premiere month for beach kings, where the annual run often begins in early June and lasting right through the month of August.

WHEN A SMOKER SIZE KING MACKEREL IS HOOKED IN THE SHALLOW SURF, THERE IS NO WHERE TO GO DEEP AS THE WATER DEPTHS ARE OFTEN LESS THAN TWENTY-FEET.

Bill and Bobbie Rew had reeled in the largest king mackerel while fishing aboard their 21foot Carolina Skiff, properly named, Rew Crew. Their 48.95-pound kingfish topped all competitors during the 25th anniversary event and claimed some $115,224.00 in cash and prizes. Reportedly the winning team had been beach fishing in less than twenty feet of water.

Captain Benny Hendrix, a past winner, knew that James Croft had also weighed in the second largest king mackerel of the event, while fishing within a few yards of where his sport fishing boat Miss Val was now searching for live baits. Croft’s boat, the Bear Caught weighed in a real smoker, weighing 46.10-pounds. Also caught just north of Nassau Sound. Nassau Sound is a riddled with sandbars and shallow water depths, eventually giving way to deep sloughs where numerous game fish gather, including the sharped tooth king mackerel. Following one of the SKA's largest sanctioned kingfish tournament, schools of menhaden had mysteriously disappeared at Nassau Sound. However Captain Hendrix and the Miss Val sport fishing boat had a backup plan and after anchoring in twenty-feet of water, began fishing on the bottom with fresh squid and shrimp. “We began catching beach whiting and yellow mouth trout,” Captain Benny Hendrix said. “The live baits were quickly barbed with a live bait hooked through the nose and a 4X, #4-treble stinger hook barbed just behind the dorsal fin. We also attached a small float some three feet from the live bait to keep the bait fish swimming close to the surface.” “We were chumming heavily with ground pogies and literally casting our barbed live baits within a few feet of the pounding surf. Seconds after Mike Gunter cast his live trout to the deep side of the surf, a massive kingfish struck the live bait and Gunter was soon hanging on as a monster king sped off on a speedy run!”

Angler No. 3 : 2017

Obviously when a smoker size king mackerel is hooked in the shallow surf, there is no where to go deep as the water depths are often less than twentyfeet. With this in mind, most hooked kingfish take off on a missile like run, often spooling two hundred yards of twenty-pound monofilament fishing line from a kingfish reel in less than a minute! Gunter’s hooked mackerel was no exception and almost emptied his saltwater kingfish reel twice before giving in to Gunter’s constant rod pressure. After two more short runs off the transom of the Miss Val, Doug Gies waited for the right moment and made a perfect gaff in the shoulder of Gunter's 45-pound king mackerel. In less than two fishing days, three king mackerel weighing almost 50-pounds were taken from the same shallow water beach structure. During those early days of beach fishing, king mackerel fishermen would first purchased a couple of bags of chum from area shrimp boats. A likely

spot was then picked along the beaches where kingfish boats would begin to drift while slowly tossing out scoops full of shrimp boat chum. Hand picked larger baits including trout and whiting were barbed them with one large 1/0 treble hook right behind the dorsal fin. Balsa wood floats were then attached to fishing lines and air injected into the fish with a horse needle, in order for the baits to float on the surface. Long slender ribbonfish were extremely effective for beach kings while rigged with several treble hooks right down their side and simply drifted back in the chum slick as well. During the early days of king mackerel tournaments Carolina kingfish boats began consistently showing up in the winner’s circle while live bait trolling. The Carolina fishermen had learned how to rig live baits including menhaden, blue runners, cigar minnows and mullet to terminal kingfish tackle, slow trolling them at trolling speeds of less than two-knots. As the tides changed and the tide lines moved, they were able to stay right with the kingfish bite. Florida fishermen took shallow water slow trolling to the next level by rigging ribbonfish with a led head jig through the bottom of the mouth and right out the top of the mouth then followed by several treble hooks barbed down the side of the silver eel. Jacksonville's Butch Garvin fine tuned shallow water kingfish while fishing with his wife Linda. “Linda and I look for big kings to begin showing up during late May along the shallow water beaches of Northeast Florida, Garvin said. “Here there is a major run of kingfish taking place from along Jacksonville Beaches, right up to the Fernandina Beach Inlet,” “Obvious kingfish signs along the beaches including, diving birds, baitfish pods and believe it or not, working shrimp boats are the best clue for finding smoker kings along the beaches.”

“I will have to admit though, a deep slough just north of Nassau Sound has always produced beach kings when the weather and fishing is red hot during the summer.” Other popular kingfish haunts include the Red Tops, which are red roofed condos located just north of Sawgrass Resort on Jacksonville Beach. Running south and just past the Sawgrass Resort, Shanty Town is also a popular fishing hole for beach kings. These are actually beach homes, which were built on stilts. Continuing south, fishermen will next notice an area of the beach that has few homes, which at one time was completely void of beach homes. This area is rightfully called the Desert and at times, offers red-hot king mackerel fishing. However one of the more popular king mackerel beach locations, has to be the Captain’s House. This beach home is easy recognized for its Widow’s Walk and is located some two-miles north of St. Augustine inlet. “Tides are extremely important when fishing the beaches for summer king mackerel,” Butch Garvin said. “I like to have our Early Times kingfish boat tight to the beach when high tide arrives. High tide by far offers the very best beach fishing for kingfish. Not only does the high tide produce clear water conditions, but bait fish also move in close to the beach as well.” Garvin also has a deadly beach fishing tactic, which includes trolling a bit faster than most kingfish boats. “I like to bump my trolling speed up to two knots or faster,” Butch said. “Here I will troll two ribbonfish down deep with downriggers. The first bait is fished just off from the bottom and the second one, fished from 10-15 feet deep. We normally use a drop back distance of thirty to forty feet with both of our downrigger baits.”

Garvin rigs his ribbonfish beginning with a #4-2X treble as a nose hook, which is followed with two #4-2X, treble hooks rigged in stinger fashion and barbed some two inches apart in the mid section of the ribbonfish. Garvin employs twenty-pound terminal monofilament fishing line, with a five-foot section of twenty-pound shock leader. A threefoot section of #3 coffee colored, single strand wire is then attached to the mono shock leader with a 40-pound black barrel swivel. The nose hook is then haywire wrapped to the tag end of the wire shock leader. Finally, #4 wire is used to rig the stinger hooks alongside the ribbonfish, making sure that both stinger hooks are set in the middle of the ribbonfish and two-inches apart. Before the ribbonfish are sent down deep with downriggers, Garvin watches the rigged ribbonfish swim alongside his fishing boat. Making sure they swim straight and are not spinning. Garvin also prefers to troll with large live baits on the surface, including blue runners and what many king mackerel fishermen relate to as “Turbo” menhaden. Alias, “Pogies”. Larger baits always troll faster than smaller ones, which normally spin when they begin to tire. The first live bait is placed in the middle transom rod holder and trolled some five yards behind the propwash. Two more live baits are trolled from t-top rod holders and fished at a drop back distance of thirty and fifty-feet. Look for some of the best beach king mackerel fishing to arrive along Florida’s Coast during the middle of July, when a high tide along the beaches arrives during late morning. Here fishermen can expect to find several kingfish boats trolling baits in a fairly small area of the beach where smoker king mackerel can weigh upwards of fifty pounds.

nyone who has been to the Flora-Bama Yacht Club knows it does not need an introduction. For those of you who have not been, picture an oasis on the beach of the intracoastal, tucked on the Florida-Alabama state line, with three restaurants, an assortment of bars, and multiple stages for live music. This place is the perfect backdrop for the 4-day rodeo. The rodeo has so many ways to win. They have huge Junior (over 10 species), Adult, Lady, and Offshore categories. Wind and rough seas made it very difficult for the anglers to get where they wanted to fish the day of the tournament. Many anglers had to come up with a new plan or fish somewhere they were not familiar with. The first few teams in reported massive swells upwards of 6-feet sloshing their boat throughout the day. After day one of fishing the largest king was Captain Rob Lupola and Team Raymarine/Strike Two with a 41.13 pounder. Second was Flight Risk with a 33.30 and in third was Epinephrine with a 33.18. On the second day of fishing only one king larger than those three was brought to the scales.

Raymarine/Strike Two won the Open Class, and Flight Risk (Captain Brad Sauers) won top Single Engine boat for the SKA. Captain Ken Creel on the Mother Dog and his team posted a 37.54 to come in second in the Open Class! Although the kingfish bite was a little slow, anglers benefitted from the very short red snapper season which overlapped with the tournament days. Congratulations to all who participated and thank you to all who supported this awesome event. What a great way to kick off Divison 7.

MOTHER DOG – Ken Creel, Keith Rehder, Kerry Veach, Joseph (Chad) Parker, Jim Wheeler with their 37.54 lb. king.

he Pompano Saltwater Slam was another well run tournament by director Jamie Bunn. Fishing condition were good, it was a bit overcast, but the weather did cooperate. The rain leading up to the tournament

made it difficult to keep bait alive and that was definitely a factor in the kingfish bite. There were lots of fish caught but the sharks were hungry and made it difficult to get them to the boat. The largest king caught was a 41.5 pounder by team Offshore Warrior. The SKA’s Top Junior Angler and Mercury Scholarship winner was Hunter Irvine of Young Guns, and our Nau-t-girl Lady Angler was Lori Hargrave of Offshore Warrior.

TIME TO REEL IT ALL IN. “Let’s catch fish,” they say. Great. Only it’s up to me to find them. Good thing I can see everything from up here on my fully integrated glass helm. I control radar, sonar, charts, engines, music, video and more – all on beautiful, large format, full HD LCD touchscreens with the highest resolution on the water. Find fish? Indeed.
