FROM THE HELM
by DAVID WORSHAM
It’s a Big Ocean,
You Can’t Fish it Alone
W
ith the arrival of summer and warmer days, it’s hard for most not to daydream of being on the water. Summer days bring back great memories of my time fishing aboard the Trivial Pursuit. Some of you may not know, I fished the trail before coming on board with Southern Kingfish Association (SKA). Our crew usually consisted of myself, my brothers Matt and Mark and my father, our fearless leader Ronnie (Capt. Ron) Worsham. Some of my best memories as a kid were on the boat tournament fishing. Capt. Ron has been fishing the SKA since ’91, so naturally my brothers and I grew up as devoted Junior Anglers. Before we were even old enough to fish we would anxiously await his return to hear fishing tales about what he and fishing partner, Clay Phillips, had caught or seen on the water that day. Occasionally, if a big bait was cut in half or a wire bitten through he would bring home the evidence for us to inspect and offer our guesses on what monster was responsible. Fishing primarily Division 5 and the Pro Tour with Capt. Ron, we loved everything about tournament fishing and the lifestyle that comes with it. I know that many Anglers may stay up late some nights, just to spend time methodically tying rigs by hand to fool a smoker king into sinking his teeth into the bait. Anglers also invest time, energy and funds to take pre-fishing trips and catch bait offshore. The teams that prepare for all situations; good or bad, are the ones I see consistently hitting the leaderboard and having a blast while doing it. Once the boat is loaded, rigs are tied, and the cooler is stocked, it’s time for the easy part, right? The biggest question then looms; Where are we fishing? Some days Capt. Ron would have a spot in mind and plan of attack for us to target smoker kings. Other days he would share the report and let
us be a part of the plan. I was always particularly fond of the double trouble rig and would be quick to determine that if we put one out, the kings would not be able to resist. I was once told “It’s a big ocean, you can’t fish it alone.” I took that to mean there is no shame in sharing information, reports, and techniques with other anglers. I see this happening inside the SKA at so many events along the trail. Sometimes it’s an angler who is from out of town getting information on how to navigate the local area, or it could be old friends sharing the latest inside information on where they last caught bait or had some luck pre-fishing. The passionate community of anglers are some of the most unselfish men and women I’ve ever met. I believe these passionate people can help to continue to grow our sport as they share their trade with others and connect with new anglers along the way. I hope you are as excited for summer and kingfish season as we are at the SKA!
Tight lines, and see you at the scales!

STIFF COMPETITION
by MEEKA ANNE
T
he festivities for the Angler Armory Spring KMT began in Madeira Beach with the captain’s meeting/party on Thursday evening. The tournament scheduled for Saturday, May 6, was postponed due to very choppy seas. James Maltz, tournament director, said, “Luckily, the seas calmed down enough to allow teams to fish the tournament on Sunday.” Of the 49 registered teams, 36 were SKA members. The conditions were not ideal, and the anglers knew they were in for a challenge. However, planning and preparation were essential for the 12 teams that weighed-in. Nine out of 12 of those teams were SKA with four being in the top five. That’s pretty impressive fishing on a day when many came home with nothing to tip the scale. Maltz said, “Our local tournaments generally see 40-50 lb. kingfish on the leaderboards, so the 25.45 win was not a common occurrence. However, with only 12 teams weighing in, this was a great accomplishment for team Stiff Competition.” It may have also been a surprising win as last spring a team came home with two kings over 65 lbs. Angler No. 2 : 2017
5
Captain John Fidi, Brian Hasson, and Patrick Abad were the anglers that brought the winning 25.45 to the docks. Fidi said, “We caught the fish on a dump site 20 miles from John’s Pass. We went to that spot looking for the cleanest water that would have fish. We had planned all week for the blow by baiting up correctly to fish there.” He reeled in the fish and Patrick stuck it. He’s not revealing the bait used, and said simply, “it was the right one.” Fidi said, “After we put one in the box, we made a long run north hoping for something better, but the water was horrible just as we expected.” In the end, their planning paid-off, and they won the tournament. Team Stiff Competition wants to thank sponsors, True South, Toyota/Lexus of Wesley Chapel and Dogfish Tackle. Captain Chad Manning of team Smashing Scales comprised of Michael Fabrizi and George Lutich won second place with a 24.19. Manning said, “We were about two miles out heading to our spot, and we saw birds and bait schools working. We decided to stop and fish it, and that is where we landed our fish.” The captain caught the fish and Fabrizi gaffed. Manning has a long history with the SKA. He was a junior angler and in the last few years has gotten back into king fishing. He said, “I started king fishing with my father around the age of six, and I’ve always loved it. With king fishing anybody can get lucky; always strive for consistency. Get the top ten fish as many times as you can, and sooner or later it’s going to be your turn.” As with many anglers, he has some superstitions. He said, “Michael and I have a firm belief that you have PB&J’s and Mountain Dew on the boat and definitely no bananas or change in your pockets.”

Captain Bob Baver of team MISS CONCEPTION caught a sizeable king at 21.69 lbs.
BOTTOM
The SKA third place win went to team Miss Conception with Captain Bob Baver bringing home a 21.69. This team breathed a sigh of relief on their last stop of the day. Baver said, “We struck out on cudas, jacks, and sharks on our first three stops.” Finally, 50 miles south of Johns Pass in 70-feet of hard bottom at 3:45 p.m., the king ate a threadfin. Jimmy Hingley fought the fish for about ten minutes, and Richard Weatherby had to go deep for the gaff.” Baver has been a member of SKA since 2000 and enjoyed every bit of it. He said, “I love the people and the competition. My goal is to put a fish on the board each tour.”

James Maltz has been hosting tournament events in the area for over nine years. He said, “Our events donate each year to charities such as Tighten the Drag Foundation (spinal cord injuries), Santa’s Angels, Madeira Beach Youth Softball and Baseball and A Kind Mouse (assistance programs). The tournaments have contributed over $25,000 to these charities. Henry Tillett ii What's your favorite thing about fishing? HT ] My favorite thing about fishing is having a successful day out on the water with my family. Do you remember your first time on the water? HT ] I can't remember my first time on the water, I was so young. My parents say I was in a car seat on the boat. What's your best fishing memory? HT ] My best fishing memory was of my mom, dad, and I winning the Raleigh Sportfishing Club King Mackerel Tournament in 2014.

Do you have any superstitions or rituals that you follow before fishing a tournament? HT ] No, I'm not really superstitious. Who is your role model? HT ] My older brother Gage is my role model.
He's in college now, but he was a great Junior Angler when he was younger. I want to be like him. Besides fishing, what else do you like to do? HT ] I love to play basketball and hunt when I’m not fishing! What would you like to be when you grow up? HT ] I'd like to be a Doctor. What did you enjoy most about the Nationals? HT ] I enjoyed fishing in Florida for the first time. I liked that we didn't have to run way offshore to fish. Maybe I will get to go to Biloxi for the 2nd time this year! As successful of a Junior Angler Lil' Henry is, he is even more exceptional in the classroom. He is a straight A, Principal list student with a special gift for math. His teachers have very high expectations for Henry. We, expect big things from him one day.

SNATCH-UM Q&A When did you begin fishing? I began fishing SKA tournaments at the age of 10 with my Pop and his buddies, Carl and Mark Titus. What type of fishing did you start with? I began by slow trolling for kingfish. How did you hear about the SKA? We saw them at the tournament sites and just decided to join one day. We never looked back. What prompted you to join the SKA? Kingfishing was booming back then and the SKA was growing quickly, we wanted to be a part of that. What do you like about tournament competition? Tournament competition makes you prepare to the best of your abilities and leaves the rest up to luck. What is most challenging about tournament competition? Being patient and sticking to your gut feelings, it's easy to give up and try something else. Do you have any rituals or superstitions you use on the boat? We pray every morning before leaving the inlet. Pops occasionally asks for a big King and we quickly remind him to pray for more important things like having a safe day. What is a common misconception about tournament competition? That you need a big boat to catch big fish…we started out and caught many fish in our 17’ Proline.
16
Angler No. 2 : 2017
What is most rewarding about tournament fishing? It’s not an easy hobby, it takes hard work. To see all your efforts turn into a big fish in the box makes it all worth it. What are your goals/dreams with regards to tournament competition? It would be great to win Nationals while our Pop (age 65) can still fish with us. Do you “fun fish” and if so, what species do you target? We do. I do a lot of inshore fishing in the offseason. I fish for trout, sheepshead and especially flounder gigging. What do you do when you’re not competing? Working at the family cabinet business with my Pops and brother or swimming in the pool with my 2 beautiful daughters, Grace (3) and Ella (9 months). Tell us something most would be surprised to hear about you. I actually enjoy relaxing at the end of a long day and watching a Disney movie with my girls. Moana is our favorite right now and I’ve promised to dress up as Maui for my daughter’s birthday next month so that should be interesting. What I wouldn’t do for those precious angels.

TIPS FOR TWEAKING THE HOTTEST HIGHPERFORMANCE OUTBOARDS
Angler No. 2 : 2017

THE VERADO CONCEPT HAS NOT ONLY PROVEN ITSELF TO BE INCREDIBLY RELIABLE, IT HAS GROWN SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE RANGE OF POWER OPTIONS AVAILABLE.
hen Mercury introduced the first Verado outboards in 2004 there was a lot of skepticism about the revolutionary design of the engine. Making a departure from the “more displacement” method of generating greater horsepower from a four-stroke motor, their engineers went in another direction. They started with a modest displacement straight six block harkening back to classic Mercury outboards from an earlier era and added the power multiplying benefits of supercharging, something that had never been tried on production outboards before. My description is an oversimplification of the forwardthinking engineering that went into the design and execution of the Verado platform but the sheer audacity of the concept had SKA teams buzzing, some with anticipation and many more with skepticism. When you bring something so technically advanced to a consumer market that’s used to incremental change it tends to bring the naysayers out of the woodwork.
Thirteen years later, the Verado concept has not only proven itself to be incredibly reliable, it has grown significantly in the range of power options available. The first year Mercury offered two models rated conservatively at 250 and 275 horsepower. Over the years they’ve managed to squeeze more and more ponies out of that diminutive six cylinder block bumping it up to 300 and 350 horsepower models in the production offshore line. If a brace of 350s strapped to your transom isn’t enough get up and go for your go-fast center console, Mercury Racing offers the fire breathing 400R. In a remarkable turn
22

of events Mercury expressed their confidence in the R model’s reliability by offering it with a two year warranty and an additional three year extended warranty program that brings coverage up to a full five years of factory backed protection. Try and find that kind of “money where your mouth is” coverage on a racing motor from anyone else. Mercury’s Verado platform includes an impressive lineup of reliable high-performance outboards that are setting records and getting SKA anglers to the fish faster than ever before. Now with over a decade of experience in setting up Verado engines on competition fish boats you might think that there was a set formula for instantly getting peak performance out of your rig, but that’s not necessarily the case. Each application is a little different and there are a host of factors to take into consideration to get the kind of top end performance SKA teams expect. That requires wringing every last bit of horsepower out of the engines and transferring it in the most efficient
manner possible to the water. I couldn’t think of anyone who has more experience setting up high performance fish boats with Mercury power than SKA competitor Alden Thornton. I first met Alden when he was with Fountain Powerboats. He came to the Nationals in Ft. Pierce, Florida in 2005 towing the first, but not the only, quad-powered center console in competition and it was setup to run. A couple years later I had the pleasure of spending time on the water with him testing another quad-powered Fountain that had just set the American Power Boat Association’s world record as the fastest center console fish boat on the planet. The test was done under the supervision of APBA officials using their standing mile timing equipment and the boat put down backto-back measured mile run times that averaged 87.6 MPH. That my friends is cruising and having the opportunity to take the helm for a couple hours right after the record run was a treat beyond words. In 2011 Alden joined Nor-Tech, another highperformance boat builder, to head up development of their center console product line and fish them in the SKA. At the Miami Boat Show this year the company showcased a 39’ Nor-Tech center console with four 400R outboards that broke the 100 MPH barrier! Talk about getting the most out of your Verados, Alden has it down pat. “That boat is pretty special,” he told me. “The engines we ran had the new Sportmaster gear cases and were mounted high on the transom fitted with Mercury Racing’s new Max 5 props. Props make a big difference in performance as does the engine height or what we call the X dimension and those props were designed specifically for this type of application.” When Alden started talking props I realized a quick call to Fond du Lac was in order. I caught up with Scott Reichow, Mercury’s resident propeller guru to talk about getting Verado power hooked up to the wet stuff. He explained that they have several prop designs for their supercharged motors that cover the gamut of performance needs. In the standard Mercury prop line they offer the Bravo 1, Revolution 4, Enertia and Enertia Eco models, each with its own slightly different performance specs. But for the real high performance stuff he walked me through the offerings from Mercury Racing that includes the Bravo 1 FS and XP, the Revolution 4 XP and the new Max 5. The props cover three, four and five blade configurations and each has its own unique blend of blade surface area, cup, pitch, venting and slip factor. Why so many choices? Because there are so
many different boats with varying hull designs and one boat owner’s idea of performance might not be the same as the next guy down the dock. For example, the four-blade Bravo 1 FS and XP models offer greater bow lift while the four blade Rev 4 XP provides greater stern lift. Mercury and Mercury Racing websites offer application assistance to help you select the model that should perform best for your boat and Verado outboard combination and the performance criteria you’re trying to achieve. I mentioned bow lift as opposed to stern lift to Alden and he told me that his Fountains required props that provide a lot of bow lift because they ran very flat while the Nor-Tech hulls run better with more stern lift to keep the bow down. That’s just two hull designs and when you multiply it across the universe of high performance fish boats you can see the need for not just a variety of different designs, but sizes within each design. “I have quite a few teams come to me that are disappointed with the top end performance of their Verado-powered rigs and the most common problems I encounter are the result of engine height and props,” Alden said. “More often than not the owner is running props that are too big to allow the engines to attain peak RPM and simply dropping from a 25 pitch prop to a 23 helps them pick up 5 or more miles per hour without doing much else.” But prop size and design aren’t the only things holding back some boats that should be pulling considerably higher top end speeds and frequently it's simple stuff and not prop related at all. “The three things that most folks don’t take into consideration that can affect getting maximum top end performance are fuel quality, fuel filter service interval and electrical power to the engines. To get
the max horsepower out of a 350 Verado it has to run at 6400 RPM. The 400R has to run at 7000. But neither engine can make max RPM if it isn’t getting the octane, an adequate supply of fuel and the spark it needs to get there. You have to run these engines on high test, the best you can get, and be sure to change out the fuel filters regularly so that they are flowing the maximum amount of gas to the engine. Spark is critical and we have cured quite a few speed deficiencies on any number of hulls by simply increasing the battery cable size from 2 AGW to 1/0 AGW. We use the heavier gauge cabling on all our multi-engine applications.” In addition to cables each Verado requires a 1000 cold cranking power rated AGM battery in addition to adequate house batteries to run all the electronics and ancillary systems. A typical installation should have 4 engine and two house batteries and Alden recommends using a Digital Voltage Sensitive Relay (DVSR) charging system to keep them all powered up. The DVSR will default to the engine batteries until they are fully charged and then switch over to the house batteries so your engines are always running on a full charge to get the spark they require to reach peak RPM. Another thing to check on three and four engine installations no matter the engine brand is engine alignment. If one or more engines are even slightly out of alignment it can rob you of several MPH off top end. Verado outboards are built to perform at a level few engines are capable of achieving. In order to get the speed you want they have to be propped for the specific boat they are mounted on, fed an adequate diet of high test fuel and connected to an electrical system capable of providing the power to spark the combustion chamber. When all those factors are in harmony your saltwater chariot will whisk you past the competition and get you to the fish fast and reliably.

T
he Saltwater Shootout, the second leg of Division 10, kicked off in Pompano Beach, FL on Mother’s Day weekend. Bluewater Movements run the best circuit of tournaments in south Florida and this event was no exception. A 25 foot tall 350hp Mercury Verado welcomed crowds to the Pompano Beach Civic center. The captains meeting Thursday night was top notch as always with hundreds of teams, family members and friends coming together. Blue Moon Fish Co. provided a delicious meal including Swordfish and Oysters. The raffle items included dozens of reels, rods, bait pens, and autographed sports memorabilia. 35 SKA teams signed up for the 1 day shootout. Winds for several days before the tournament combined with a full
moon did not add up to a hot King bite, but as always a few teams were able to land some studs. A unique TWT at the Shootout is the “Pick 3” which is drawn blindly from a hat just before checkout. This year the 3 selected were Kingfish, Cobia, and Dolphin and the prize was over $14,000. The Shootout also puts up a $2,000 prize for the top SKA boat! (Heaviest king) The tournament paid out over $150,000 in cash. Capt Alex Burgess and his crew on Team Seapremacy posted a massive 200 pound 8 fish aggregate early in the afternoon and ended up claiming top spot at the Shootout. The largest SKA king of the tournament was 39.5 caught by Team Kluch Apparel, congrats and well done Capt Mike Riseley and crew. Top SKA Jr angler and recipient of the Mercury Jr Angler Scholarship was Chase Perry of Reel Anarchy. Top SKA Lady Angler was a new member Brandie Metts of Kluch Apparel. Team D&D had the biggest catch of the tournament, a 41-pound kingfish that took the top spot in four different heavy fish categories for a grand total of $28,661 in prize money! They ran South in their quad engine Mercury powered SeaVee toward Miami where they landed the big cash King. The exciting 3-leg PBSC summer series continues June 8 - 11 with its second leg, the Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam. Registration for the Saltwater Slam is currently open. Thank you to all who came out and supported this event.
