We are only six weeks away from Nationals! I can practically feel the Mississippi sun on my face, taste the buffet, and hear the casino buzzing with SKA anglers. I hope you and your team have made plans to come join us for the festivities in Biloxi this October. All the information is available for you at www.fishska.com under our “2017 Nationals” tab.

T

here’s a ton of action on the Mercury Tournament Trail! Divisions Four and Five were the first to finish the season. And as always it came down to the final event to determine who would take home the hardware. Division Ten is a true nail biter and we anxiously await who will take the crown. Division Six and Seven both have just one more stop for anglers to punch their ticket to Nationals. We can’t wait to see who comes out on top for each one of the Divisional shootouts. As for the rest of the Divisions, Nine has three events left before qualifications are set for Nationals; One and Three are the last two of the season to get underway, both kicking off at the end of August. It really is a wonderful time of year for King Mackerel anglers. The fish are biting and we are loving every minute of it. Good luck to all of the captains at your next event, and congratulations on the great success this season so far.

And of course, great success yields many weighed fish. Recently, the question of, “Can we have our fish back?” has come up at several tournaments. I thought it would behoove us all to touch on the rules behind the practice… especially when a tournament has a mandatory donation rule in effect. Tournament rules state that a weighed fish becomes property of the tournament, but in some cases anglers have requested (and been granted) the right to have their fish returned. Most SKA sanctioned events have fish mongers on site; they’re responsible for taking in all the fish that are weighed. Often times the fish monger provides payment for the total weight of fish collected. In most states, the law requires these payments go to local charities, or the foundation to which the tournament supports, thus helping the community in a positive way. Take our own National Championship for example. With the fish collected by our fish monger, Smilin’ Bob from Key West, FL, we donated xxx to Ft. Pierce . We expect to give even more to the xxx of Biloxi this October. As to why anglers want their fish back after a weigh-in; in some cases, anglers have commercial licenses and are looking to sell the fish to recoup some of their own tournament expenses. Others are just thinking about dinner. I think we can find a compromise in the future and propose that before the winning fish in any category is donated, the captain should have the ability to make the final decision. This way, if the tournament has a mandatory donation rule, the heaviest King should be considered an exception and fall back to the discretion of the captain. I believe the majority of our anglers understand the importance of giving back to the communities that host our King Mackerel Tournaments. After all, it’s the right thing to do if a local charity is set to benefit from the event. As always, we encourage you to thoroughly read the rules of each event you participate in. After years of fishing tournaments, it is easy to get comfortable and not pay attention to the specifics, but just a little attention to detail can prevent major headaches down the road. I’m interested in hearing what the rest of our members think about the tournaments who require fish to be donated – and if my proposal of winning captain’s choice might be the happy medium. We can make this the best sport fishing community if we work together; and that’s what the Southern Kingfish Association is here to facilitate. I look forward to seeing you on the Trail!

T

he locale and the director often set the tone of a fishing tournament. In the laid-back town of Shellman Bluff, Georgia, tournament director Mamie Mason has a strong connection with the anglers. This year’s winner, Ashley Thompson says, “Mamie puts on one of the finest tournaments on the circuit. She sets a high precedent.” His confidence in Mason is one of the reasons his business Piggly Wiggly along with the help of Coca-Cola were sponsors this year. Talking to Mason, you get a sense of the love she has for the sport. She has won Georgia Lady Angler, and in 2007 her family won the SKA Lifetime Achievement Award. She also has been involved with the Sapelo Open for the entirety of its 37 years and acting director for more than a decade. That is the kind of commitment that anglers and teams respect. The town of Shellman Bluff is quaint with gravel roads and a population of about 3000. Most of the teams say that the Captain’s dinner at the Saltwater Fishing Camp is one of the best they’ve had. When it is time for the weigh-in, people come from all over the county to the charming marina at Contentment Bluff. In a sport that sometimes drifts over to the fast and flashy lane, the Sapelo Open is a dream scenario for those that simply love fishing. This year the Sapelo had 66 registered teams of which 43 were SKA.

BOTTOM: REEL BROKE’S Mark Strickland, William Earl Stokes and Franklin Cliatt with a 31.69 lb. catch.

First place went to Captain Ashley Thompson and the Never Enuff team. Thompson said, “We ran out 60 miles offshore and had been tossing off amberjacks and sharks all morning.” Finally, just before noon, they got the winning fish on the line. This was a dream come true for a local junior SKA angler who lost his father just over a year ago. Anderson McCurdy (son of wellloved SKA member Lee McCurdy) won the overall 1st place as well as junior angler with the 47.35 kingfish. Thompson says, “Around 12:30, after we had the 47-pounder onboard, we packed up and headed back for the weigh-in.” Most teams have a superstition or two. Thompson said, “When we win, we wear the same clothes the next time around.” Thompson believes in luck and skill and said, “Luck wins over skill most of the time, but I would say it is about 51/49 split between the two.” Thompson has been a SKA member for more than a decade.

ABOVE: HARD LABOR’s Russell Garrett, Kevin Smith and Matt Remion with a 38.19.

The second place win went to Captain Randy Howell on the team Hammer Time. They brought in a 44.29 caught at Red Tops. They headed that way off a tip from the captain of “A Long Shot.” Dewey Howell caught the fish on a blue runner and Curtis Tumlin gaffed. Howell has been with the SKA since 2002 and hopes to win his division again and make a show at Nationals this year. When this team heads offshore, they say, “We’re going to swing for the fences.” Howell says, “We always plan ahead to be as prepared as we can and always hope for a touch of luck.” Team Hammer Time would like to thank Hickory Bluff Marina and Howell Roofing Company. The third place went to Captain Jerry Gregory’s team on the Double J with a 41.35. Rusty Rogers said, “The team ran North to Edisto after catching a nice fish last year in the

same spot. We caught our bait, then ran 63 miles northeast and set out our lines around 9 a.m. After catching a few small fish, the big one hit the line. I handed the rod over to Tommy Faye Lyons, and after a 30-minute fight, Dustin Curtis gaffed it.” The first place in small boat class went to Captain Russell Garrett and team Hard Labor. They had to run out to 120-feet of water in an area call the Fox Hole. Not having any luck early in the day, they decided to change locations. Garrett said, “We spotted a bait pod on the surface and made the decision to stop and troll around there. The lines were not out long when the fish came out of nowhere. The king made several good runs, and it took about 45-minutes for Matt Remion to get him to the boat for Kevin Smith to gaff.” Garrett said, “It was one of those days when we broke everything we touched

– broken rod – broken downrigger – bait well pump tripped out, just to name a few.” But in the end, it was a great day for this team with a 38.19 in the box. Garrett says, “This year we want to keep weighing in good fish and see where it takes us.” He also believes luck is necessary, but you have to put in the work if you want to catch a good fish. They would like to thank Shoreline Landscape Solutions, Get Mowed, Keep Alive, XRATUF, and Maricom. The Sapelo Tournament had a $10,000 purse for first prize as well as payouts for the top ten and top two small boat class. Mason said, “We also plan to take some proceeds for reef restoration and oyster bed renourishment.” Additionally, they help out local causes as the need arises. Overall, some large fish, and a heartwarming day.

chance sullivan What's your favorite thing about fishing?

CS ] My favorite thing about fishing is hearing that reel

scream when a smoker king hits and spending time with my dad and friends. I also love the element of surprise. You never know what you are going to catch out there. What's your best fishing memory?

CS ] I started so young I cannot remember my first

time on the water. My best fishing memory would have to be last year's James Island Yacht Club KMT when we broke the SC SKA record with a 53.25 pound smoker (pictured top left)! Do you have any superstitions or rituals that you follow before fishing a tournament?

CS ] We have to have circle sandwiches on the boat

and no bananas! Not even banana boat suntan lotion. Who is your role model?

CS ] My dad and my grandpa, they taught me

everything I know about fishing.

Besides fishing, what else do you like to do?

CS ] I like football, mud boggin', and duck hunting. [ NAME ] Chance B. Sullivan

What would you like to be when you grow up?

[ AGE ] 15

CS ] I'd like to be a charter captain.

Q&A When did you begin fishing? At age 5, my grandfather started me off his canal dock and later took me through the canals and lakes surrounding Tavares, Florida in his boat. What type of fishing did you start with? I first started with bluegill, then moved on to bass. The rest is history. How did you hear about the SKA? During the 2001 Jolly Mon King Classic awards ceremony. What prompted you to join the SKA? I wanted to become part of a competitive group and an organized king mackerel circuit. What do you like about tournament competition? We enjoy all aspects of tournament competition from preparation to strategy to execution.

16

Angler No. 5 : 2017

THE SIZE OF THE BOAT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER. BEING PREPARED AND CAPITALIZING ON EACH BITE DEFINITELY. What is most rewarding about tournament fishing? Time spent on the water with my son and fellow competitors. What is a common misconception about tournament competition? The size of the boat really does not matter. Being prepared and capitalizing on each bite definitely does. What are your goals/dreams with regards to tournament competition? Over time to win first place at least once in each event that we consistently fish (Divisions 1 & 9). Do you “fun fish” and if so, what species do you target?

What is most challenging about tournament competition? I'd have to say the most challenging thing is just dialing in and being consistent on catching quality kings.

Yes, we enjoy bottom fishing.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions you use on the boat? Superstitions: We believe a clean boat spooks the fish, so we let the rain wash ours.

Tell us something most would be surprised to hear about you? My Co-Captain/son keeps me from “running and gunning” too much during each event.

What do you do when you’re not competing? Fish, fish, and more fishing.

WHERE THEY CAN BE CONSISTENTLY LOCATED.

ithout a doubt one of the very best kingfish stocks in Southeast United States waters can be found in the Gulf of Mexico where the Southern Kingfish Association is holding its 2018 Mercury National Championship. Marcus Kennedy of Mobile, Alabama and team Kwazar has won his share of kingfish tournaments held in the fertile waters of the gulf. It is a favorite of his to win any kingfish tournament they enter. “We have two stocks of kings in the North Gulf, a resident stock that winters offshore of the mouth of the Mississippi River and the migratory stock that comes up from the Keys and southern waters,” Marcus Kennedy said. “This big kingfish migration takes place in early spring and lasts right

through the fall. Many of the tournament kings are targeted in 100 to 300 - feet of water around rigs, wrecks, and natural bottom. One of the keys in finding tournament size kings is locating one or more oil rigs that are fortunately constructed on a natural live bottom and, if you are real lucky, also have nearby ledges and possibly a wreck.” “Virtually anywhere that you find a good supply of baitfish, including blue runners, beeliners, snappers and more offshore, is subject to having big kings in the vicinity. I think the big kings are spread out more today than they were 20-years ago. Although there are fewer rigs, thanks to the idle iron program, we have tens of thousands of artificial reefs up here now as opposed to a few dozen back then. In any case, during the spring and summer we have found the best tactics are to load up with live bait and hit

as many large reefs and rigs as possible in the 100’ to 300’ range in order to locate a big loaner tournament grade fish. During the fall the big fish seem to concentrate more and can be found near offshore schools of spawning pogies or mullet, again typically in the 100 to 200 feet of water range. Water clarity and water temperature do not seem to matter as much, especially in the fall when the big schools of bait are key. There are also typically plenty of kings along the beaches from late spring thru fall but they normally average less than 25 lbs. so not much attention is paid to them during tournaments.” Orlando Florida's Rodney Sahr king fishes from Port Canaveral where king fishing is typically best during the spring, fall and winter fishing seasons. Kingfish habitat here is also critical when targeting Southern Kingfish Association king mackerel. “It might seem odd but, when we are targeting SKA kingfish, we have caught many of our larger kingfish where there is not a lot of bait fish around,” Rodney Sahr said. Fort Pierce, Florida attracts a main migration of South Atlantic Coast king mackerel during the fall, winter and spring fishing seasons. While king mackerel fishing during the summer fishing season can be excellent in water depths from 120 – 200 feet of water. The Florida Keys also offer both world class king mackerel fishing and a welcome vacation for many king mackerel fishermen. In fact, if you are in hopes of landing that once in a lifetime king mackerel, Key West is definitely the place to catch your personal best. Several IGFA line class king mackerel records have been made here in part because there are so many

trophy size kingfish here beginning in early December through early March. Target the Atlantic Ocean side of Key West at Sand Key Light where water depths drop from 80-200 feet in a short distance offers some of the best king fish habitat in the Keys. Following the diving birds and staying on bait fish schools marked with your recorder are key. Once again the key to catching tournament size kingfish here is concentrating on the deep sides of the rock ledges, key kingfish habitat! John’s Pass, Florida attracts a major migration of king mackerel during the spring and fall fishing seasons. A vast live bottom along the beaches, both north and south of John’s Pass offers ideal kingfish habitat where a variety of baitfish including white baits, greenbacks and menhaden are found. Ultimately, the large schools

of migratory king mackerel are eventually attracted to these bait enriched waters during their fall and spring migrations. Other popular John’s Pass kingfish waters include the four-mile hump, the Steeples and Egmont channel buoy’s five and six. The Whistler buoy is also a good bet for attracting kingfish as well. Pier fishermen regularly target kingfish from the Skyway Bridge fishing pier, while live bait fishing. Slow trolling live baits at the Skyway Bridge shipping channel is always a good choice when targeting smoker sized king mackerel. Here, a deep shipping channel offers excellent

kingfish habitat. Live bottoms are located just off from the steep ledges of the shipping channel. Jacksonville, Florida offers excellent king mackerel fishing along the First Coast beginning in late May through the month of August. Here, fishing inlets, including the Nassau and St. Mary’s are located just north of the St. John’s inlet. Popular kingfish inlets, including St. Augustine, Matanzas and Ponce, are located south of the St. John’s inlet. King mackerel are attracted to these deep inlet waters where heavy tidal currents are constantly flushing baitfish schools in and out of these fishy passes. Tide lines also

gathers baitfish on the clear side of the color change and kingfish too. Massive schools of menhaden are also numerous close to these famous kingfish inlet mouths and at nearby beaches as well. Live bottoms located along the beaches just south of the St. John’s inlet also attract world class king mackerel fishing during the warm summer months as well. Some of these more popular beach kingfish hot spots include the Red Tops, which are actually condos with red roofs, Sawgrass, the Desert, the Captain’s House and the Gate Station, which is located just north of the St. Augustine inlet. A live bottom located directly off from the beaches of Marine Land consistently attracts king mackerel when the in coming tide produces ultra clear water conditions. Key offshore kingfish waters include FA reef, which is located some 8-miles southeast of the St. Mary’s inlet. The Nassau Bottom is a massive live bottom located just 5-miles east of Nassau Sound. If the kings aren’t running at the Nassau Bottom, navigate 10-miles east to HH fish haven, which always produces a big kingfish bite at high noon. The Elton Bottom is located some 40-miles east of the St. John’s inlet and harbors tournament-grade king mackerel, year round. Water depths at the Elton Bottom range from 100-120 feet of water where two major live bottom areas are found.

conditions are stable and the water clarity is good. Slow troll the clean sides of the defined rips during the falling tide.

D-Buoy is located just offshore of Doboy Sound where king fishing is excellent during the last of the in-coming and falling tides. Here king mackerel fishermen prefer to anchor up and chum, while drifting live baits in their chum slick. Further offshore, the Cabretta bottom is also a well-known Georgia smoker hole! Gray’s Reef is a national marine sanctuary located some 20-miles east of Sapelo Island that attracts major runs of king mackerel during the summer fishing season. Joe Bell set the new Georgia State king mackerel record while king fishing at Gray’s Reef in June of 2004. Bell’s record kingfish weighed 75.12-pounds!

North Carolina’s best king mackerel fishing can be found in the Wilmington shipping channel where slow trolling ribbonfish and menhaden right in the middle of the shipping channel is a deadly kingfish tactic.

Some of South Carolina’s best kingfish action begins in early October and runs right through the month of April of the following year. Navigating 15-miles offshore of South Carolina’s Little River Inlet, a popular kingfish hole called the Jungle is often a well-kept secret. The 4-10/5-10 live bottom is located just inshore of the Jungle making Little River Inlet a hot spot for king mackerel fishermen. The Belky Bear is located in 55-feet of water off from Murrell’s Inlet and is another popular South Carolina kingfish hot spot. Large schools of menhaden can be found along South Carolina’s Beaches, which also attract king mackerel in water depths from 20-40 feet of water. The Georgetown and Charleston shipping channel’s both offer excellent king mackerel fishing when weather

The 30/30 Bottom is located just south of the New Topsail inlet and is a North Carolina king mackerel hot spot as well. There are several kingfish hot spots located off from the New River inlet including the Xmas Rock, which actually looks like a Xmas tree on your fish locator! A large live bottom is located eight-nautical miles southeast of the New River inlet that holds king mackerel as well, which is often referred to as the 7-11. Another popular North Carolina king mackerel hot spot includes the Atlas Tanker, which is an artificial reef and live bottom located 17-miles off Cape Lookout. King mackerel fishermen often slow troll live menhaden, or dead ribbonfish on either side of the Cape Lookout bar where the shallow edges of the bar drop off into deep water. North of Cape Lookout, a popular kingfish drop called the Dead tree hole is located in close to the beaches with water depths ranging from 18-20 feet. Cape Hatteras is a real North Carolina king mackerel hot spot, particularly during the fall and winter fishing seasons. Plain and simple, SKA tournament size kingfish are typically found where there is ideal habitat including a live, rough bottom, rock ledges, wrecks, deep holes, channels, towers and more!

Nine Mile Reef is located directly east of the St. Augustine inlet and is a good bet when summer fronts push kingfish and baitfish schools offshore. A Nine Mile Reef is also located just east of Daytona’s Ponce Inlet which also offers excellent king fishing through the summer fishing season. Georgia offers world class king mackerel fishing, particularly during the summer fishing season. The Brunswick and Savanna shipping channels also offer excellent king mackerel fishing during the warm months of summer. Some of the best kingfish action is enjoyed while trolling ribbonfish deep with downriggers during a falling tide and right in the middle of the channels. Follow the diving birds that are feeding over glass minnows and surface feeding schools of

early 300 teams showed up to the captains meeting in Northeast Florida. The tournament has two pay structures, one structure for the heaviest single fish (top prize a Contender boat) and another for heaviest aggregate weight. Anglers had 2 days to accomplish either goal. They were allowed to weigh one fish on day-one and two fish on the second day. There were several teams anchored up near the dock before the scales opened Thursday afternoon. Typically a sign that the bite is on and some nice fish were caught. King Pin (captain Greg Samuel) was one of those boats waiting patiently for scales to open, and when we got a look at the 52-pound fish, it was easy to see why. They held the lead for a short time when captain Tyler Patterson, his brother Ben, and father Billy came in on the Snatch Um boat. The

fish was huge, and Tyler asked me if it was big enough to take the lead. I took a moment to study the fish before shrugging and saying, “We’re about to find out.” After the fish was inspected for freshness, it hit the scale. A hush fell over the crowd, it felt like an eternity waiting for the emcee to announce the weight. “55.15!” he proclaimed. They were ecstatic, and didn't want to put the fish down. Members of the crowd called frantically for the team to bring the fish closer for some photos. Tyler obliged willingly, asking them “Who wants to see it next?” Although there were a lot of boats left out there, something told me that would be a tough weight to top. We did not see any other fish over 50 caught all weekend, but some very impressive catches across the board. Nine fish over 40 pounds and two over 50. The top Small Boat was Captain Geoff Stam on the Turn 3 with a 39.80. The top Single Engine was Double D captain Dennis Redmond with a 38.50. The GJKT tournament is so much more than just a fishing event. The site is open for a week as they host a Jr Angler event earlier in the week, and a dock fishing tournament for children with disabilities. Mark your calendar for next years event, you do not want to miss this spectacle.
