A LEGACY OF CHANGE
PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS
Dear Alumni and Friends, This has been a challenging year on a number of fronts. Higher education has been forced to adapt and many small liberal arts institutions are struggling. At Fisk, we are adapting every week to the ever-changing dynamics of our current reality and our students, faculty and staff have shown tremendous resilience. I have had the pleasure of serving as Provost for the past several years and during this time, we have made significant strides on the academic front with new programs and innovative practices. I am very confident in Fisk’s current trajectory and I could not be more honored to serve as Interim President. Great things are ahead for Fisk and the recent removal from SACSCOC probation merely confirms the remarkable momentum that has been building at the University. In the coming months, we will be focusing on several initiatives to complement our amazing enrollment growth and the increased academic standards of our incoming students. These initiatives will focus specifically on our data collection, retention programs, new course offerings and overall service culture. Fisk is poised for a bright future and we look forward to the day when everyone can safely return to campus. Fisk Forever,
Vann R. Newkirk, Sr., Ph.D. President
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
Dear Alumni and Friends, Fisk University completed another record-breaking year. Total fundraising reached $11,000,000 and the overall enrollment increased by another 14%. Moreover, the academic quality of the incoming class has improved from the 54th to the 73rd percentile and the number of students involved in corporate internships has increased to almost 40%. Alumni giving participation reached 35%, which also reflects the growing excitement around everything that is happening at Fisk. The University finished another year with an operational surplus and the removal from SACSCOC probation positions the University for an exciting future. Considering the pandemic, this will be a particularly challenging year, but Fisk has developed a sustainable and scalable business model that will propel the University to new heights. Construction on the new Roland Parrish career center is slated to begin any day and we are hopeful and confident that the construction of a new residence hall will begin later this year. Going forward, it will be essential to focus on improving the overall infrastructure to accommodate the growing student body and the expansion of Fisk’s academic programs. The amazing things that are happening at Fisk would not be possible without your unwavering support and we remain profoundly grateful to each and every one of you. Fisk Forever,
Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D. Executive Vice President
COVID-19 UPDATE
COVID-19 UPDATE
Within weeks of the outbreak, Fisk University made adjustments to ensure the continued excellence of its academic programming. Under the leadership of then-Provost Dr. Vann Newkirk, a faculty taskforce developed a short-term Spring strategy as well as a comprehensive plan for the 2020-21 academic year. A strong technology infrastructure, reinforced by the Canvas learning management system and systems training across the campus, made the transition to virtual learning possible. The implementation of a virtual academic support system ensured the successful entry of an outstanding freshman class as well as a high rate of returning students. The transition to a hybrid instructional system was also key for students and parents concerned about the safety protocols for COVID-19. Proactive academic support coupled with the EAB Navigate student support management system further improved the ability of students to achieve their academic goals. The overall result was a semester where Fisk University students and faculty flourished. Fisk’s approach was widely lauded for its thoughtfulness and the University continues to distinguish itself as a leader in providing a high-quality educational experience.

UNIVERSITY LEGACIES SUCCESSFUL REBRAND In the Summer of 2019, the University began its rebranding process, which included a website overhaul and refreshed brand marks. Our new website, which launched in April not only offers a vibrant new look for the university, but also creates a more user-friendly site. The University’s new brand marks were successfully unveiled in October with the help of a Fisk Alumnus who collaborated with the university’s marketing department to create an inspiring video for the unveiling. Since the launch of the new website, Fisk has experienced a surge in all the major metrics from more visitors to increased time spent on the website, which is a critical part of getting more exposure for the University.

FISK UNIVERSITY GALLERIES The Fisk University Galleries reached several major milestones this year. The gallery hosted 13 public programs: 5 on campus in the fall and 8 virtual programs in the spring. Fisk also opened the Terry Adkins exhibition: Our Sons and Daughters Ever on the Altar, which was co-curated by the Fisk University Galleries and the Frist Art Museum in the spring of 2020. Fisk’s reputation among national fellowship organizations has grown significantly over the past couple of years. This year, the University had more applications for prestigious awards than ever before: three students applied for the Marshall Scholarship; two applied for the Fulbright Fellowship; one applied for the Schwarzman; three students applied for the Truman Scholarship, and four students applied for the Goldwater Scholarship. Two students, Aliyah Collins and Jesus Murillo were accepted to Passages, a scholarly program that funds students to visit Israel. The university was also named a Fulbright Institutional Leader based on the Honors Program’s increased engagement with the Fulbright Program. Finally, Fisk had another student selected as a Rhodes Scholar finalist, the third in the past two years.

UNIVERSITY LEGACIES CAREER PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
Fisk has strategically doubled its efforts around professional development, career services and socio-economic mobility. The results have been fantastic with corporate internships increasing from 21% to 35% and permanent placement up more than 20%. In a recent survey of 145 STEM graduates over a 5-year period, average starting salaries exceeded $70,000. This is a staggering number and considering that 68% of Fisk students are PELL eligible, this signals an unprecedented socioeconomic transformation. Fisk is setting a new standard for upward mobility that will impact generations and communities across the country. Fisk has seen a 30% increase in students pursuing corporate careers and last year the University ranked third in the state of Tennessee for job placement. Business and STEM currently constitute 70% of all majors on campus and in the past two years enrollment has doubled in computer and data science. With the increased corporate emphasis on diversity and inclusion, Fisk is uniquely positioned to create talent pipelines in the areas of technology, business, healthcare and law. Corporate internships are up 20% over the past three years but the objective is to have 75% of students involved during their tenure at Fisk.
STUDENT ACTIVISM ANDVOLUNTEERING
Perhaps more than any other student body, Fisk students remain committed to giving back. During the 2019-2020 academic year, Fisk students logged a total of 14,125 service hours. To record and recognize these hours, Fisk launched the MyVoluntier platform. Fisk students participated in a total of 231 opportunities, with 91 organizations across the Middle Tennessee area. Fisk also participated in a collaborative, MLK Joint Day of Service where students joined 400 volunteers from Belmont University, Lipscomb University, Meharry Medical College, Nashville State Community College, Tennessee State University, Trevecca Nazarene University and Vanderbilt University, to help alleviate hunger in Middle Tennessee and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When Nashville was severely damaged by a tornado in March, Fisk students were everywhere on the front lines from clothing drives to clean up and food stations. Fisk partnered with other local universities for the “Rock the Vote” virtual event held at Belmont University. The day included a 90-minute concert event to promote voter registration, which was broadcast on National Voter Registration Day. Performers included student and alumni acts from Belmont University, Vanderbilt University, Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University. Representing Fisk was R&B soul singer/songwriter Lauren McClinton.
