FIRSTHBCU THE GYMNASTICS TEAM

On February 11th, Fisk University announced the launch of the first HBCU Intercollegiate Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team. Since that day, it has been a whirlwind and it hardly seems to be slowing down Recruiting, performing, appearances, documentary series, filming, interviews and meets, everyone is clamoring to be a part of this trailblazing story. Women’s gymnastics exemplifies the values of Fisk University: determination, excellence, and a commitment to a more just and equitable future. These values have consistently been at the forefront of women’s gymnastics and Fisk could not be more excited for these remarkable student-athletes to call Fisk home. The commitment from Coach and Athletic Director Corrinne Tarver was critical to the success of this initiative. Coach Tarver herself broke barriers during her time competing at the University of Georgia. She became the first Black female gymnast to win the NCAA all-around title and hopes to soon create more history with the Fisk Women's Gymnastics team.

JOHN LEWIS CENTER

FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

The John Lewis Center for Social Justice was founded in 2019 to foster and advance social justice across every sphere of contemporary society by engendering rigorous research, applying scholarship, artistic production, and community engagement locally as well as globally Last year, with the pioneering support of Amy and Frank Garrison, Fisk established the Diane Nash Descendants of the Emancipation Chair for the Director of the Center This year, Fisk established the John Lewis Center for Social Justice Fellowship Program with the generous support of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies The three Fellowships are focused on specific areas in the continued fight for justice including policy, the arts, and STEM

The Fellowships are directed at three distinct areas of social justice impact:

Policy/Activism: The Policy/Activism Fellow will follow in the footsteps of iconic Fiskites Dr Diane Nash ’61 and the late Congressman John Lewis ’67 to continue the fight against bigotry and confront ongoing attacks on civil rights like voting, healthcare, and education

Arts/Culture: The Arts/Culture Fellow is inspired by extraordinary Fisk artists, poets, and musicians such as Dr Nikki Giovanni ’67, Arna Bontemps, Aaron Douglas, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers®–all of whom have sought to promote social justice through their work

Tech/Data Science: The Tech/Data Science Fellow will advance the tradition of Fisk Alumnus Dr. W.E.B Du Bois 1888 to shape the evolving data, science, and tech fields toward ensuring full and equitable access to Black communities, both as consumers and as producers

THE CAMPUS OVERHAUL

Fisk University’s improved financials are finally translating into a complete campus overhaul. During this year’s record homecoming many of you had an opportunity to see the amazing changes that are happening. Major renovations to Jubilee Hall, the full-scale restoration of the historic Driskell home as well as the Boyd House, and the John Work home. Furthermore, the new Roland Parrish Career Center is fully operational, and design is already underway to turn Burrus Hall into an incubation and innovation center in partnership with the city. The Fisk leadership is working tirelessly to secure a new athletic complex while the Fisk Memorial Chapel as well as the current Gymnasium have benefited from significant upgrades.

Fisk University has also secured financing for two new buildings to be completed by the fall of 2024: a 300-bed living and learning facility and a new state of the art science building. According to Fisk University acting President Frank Sims, “We could not be more excited about everything that is happening on campus and particularly the announcement of these two new buildings This announcement is the result of everything that has transpired over the past five years and our remarkable students could not be more deserving of this campus overhaul. With the increases in enrollment, Fisk is already at capacity and this new living learning center will take us one step closer to our goal of once again being a campus of 1,600-1,800 students ”

PHILANTHROPIC HIGHLIGHTS

Earlier this year, Galen College of Nursing, a subsidiary of HCA Healthcare, announced an agreement to create a new pathway in nursing for Fisk students. The agreement allows for Fisk degree coursework credits to transfer to Galen College of Nursing so that students may go directly into Galen’s BSN program, allowing them to complete the program in as little as two years. HCA Healthcare made a $1.5 million gift to Fisk University in support of this program and specifically scholarships for students pursuing a degree in nursing This gift will provide scholarships over four years for Fisk health science and nursing students interested in pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Galen College of Nursing The gift will also help support the implementation of the program by funding additional faculty support at Fisk

Several years ago, HCA Healthcare partnered with Fisk to create the HCA Healthcare Scholars at Fisk University program to provide scholarships, career planning support and internship opportunities for highachieving undergraduates. Through the program, HCA Healthcare committed $1 million in scholarship funding to support students studying in a variety of academic areas, including business, computer science, biology, and psychology. To date, HCA Healthcare has supported many Fisk University students through the program, including a number who are current HCA Healthcare colleagues Chief executive officer for HCA Healthcare, Sam Hazen said: “We are proud to partner with Fisk University as we work to build a diverse pipeline of healthcare professionals It is our hope that this latest investment provides more students with the opportunity to find fulfilling careers in nursing”

This year, Fisk University also announced an innovative endowment gift from Acrew Capital and its co-founder Theresia Gouw, which includes a $1 million interest in Acrew’s Diversify Capital Fund (“DCF”), the largest ever venture capital fund with a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) focus This gift is the first of its kind at Fisk University and allows the institution to, for the first time, become an institutional investor in venture capital, an asset class that has traditionally been reserved for universities with much larger endowments.“We are thrilled to have Fisk University as an institutional investor in Acrew We believe that the DCF is uniquely positioned to help diversify not only cap tables of leading growth companies, it also provides access and opportunities to Fisk, who like many HBCUs, have not been asked to invest in venture funds before” It is also important to note that it was Fisk Trustee Ed Zimmerman, himself an investor in the Acrew fund and Theresia’s co-founder in First Close Partners, who made this exciting connection possible The support of Theresia and Acrew Capital has transformed Fisk into an institutional investor in venture capital and thus, a participant in the type of transformational wealth creation that remains crucial to the future of many HBCUs

HONORS PROGRAM

The last three years have yielded four Rhodes scholar finalists, and much of this success emanates from Fisk’s outstanding honors program In March, a Fisk University Team under the leadership of Dr. LaTanya Rogers, director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Honors Program, represented Fisk University at the weeklong HBCU Battle of the Brains Competition sponsored by the National Football League (NFL). The Fisk team comprised of students Chisom Okwor (captain), Timothy Mazenge, Aminu Abdusalam, Daikerra Sweat, Jayla Williams, Tony Coleman, Sopuruchi Ndubuisi, and Elijah Okoro emerged 1st out of 30 colleges, winning more than $80,000 The students participated in a 24hr technology-andproblem-solving competition (hack-a-thon), which lasted from 7 am on Friday to 7 am on Saturday The Fisk team invented an innovative solution (and built an app!) that connects HBCU student talent to opportunities in the sports industry

In addition to the money, the Fisk student team won an all-expenses-paid Experienceship to the NFL Draft (April 24 – May 1 in Las Vegas), a fully-funded trip to the Black Sports Business Symposium (June 16-18 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia), a championship belt, and the newest Nike Air Jordan release shoes. The team’s success didn’t end there as two of the six student participants won the Dell Success Scholarship during the event! Dr. Rogers said: “Gregory Gibson and his Battle of the Brains partners gave HBCU students a global platform to share their ideas The Fisk win and the product that our students delivered is an exemplifier of the excellence in our student body”

Three Honors Scholars were selected as Stanford University Innovation Fellows (UIF) (Chibuikem Iheagwaram, Covenant Adenuga, and Aayush Bhatta) Three Honors Scholars attended the Phi Eta Sigma National Honors Society convention in Birmingham, Ala. (Michael Henderson, Dabeluchukwu Okolo, and Sheanel Gardner). Ten Scholars submitted a joint application for the HBCU New Venture Challenge (Henry Fowobaje, Kelechukwu Nwaiwu, Carrington Allen, Elijah Okoroh, Tafarri Pleas, Swalina Bishop, Daikerra Sweat, Eshiobomhe [Sigmus] Aimofumhe, Arun Giri, and Cashauna Temple). Six Scholars attended the NAAAHP (National Association of African American Honors Program) conference in Baltimore, Md to present their research (Eshiobomne [Sigmus] Aimofumhe, Veronica Holmes, Daikerra Sweat, Gift Eni, Kelechukwu Nwaiwu, and Kayla Hawthorne)

RESEARCH

Faculty research remains a critical component of the Fisk identity. Fisk is also widely recognized for engaging students in research and scholarly activities, which no doubt explains the success of our STEAM students. Fisk’s research and scholarship is grounded in the academic curriculum, campus support services, and various community activities. Fisk faculty, students and administrators emphasize the discovery and advancement of knowledge through research in the natural and social sciences, business, and the humanities The annual research symposium provides a consistent venue to disseminate and share scholarly contributions with other researchers and scholars As research contributions and best practices are presented from several disciplines, it provides opportunities for inter-disciplinary research and collaboration.

This year Fisk University applied for more than $4,000,000 of funding for applied, basic and experimental research. Most of the funding came from federal agencies such as NSF, DOE, and NIH. The Biology and Physics disciplines applied $1,289,000 (32.2%) and $1,284,000 (321%) respectively, which constitutes 643% of the total research expenses There were research funds applied in most of the disciplines such as Bioengineering ($10,000), Computer Science ($431,000), Material Science ($527,000), Mathematics ($527,000), Humanities ($109,000), Education ($14,000) and Psychology ($54,000) This shows that research was conducted across disciplines and departments and for those eager to learn more about the specifics of each project, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of Fisk’s outstanding annual research magazine.

Finally, Fisk University was awarded $6,573,000 in new grants for the fiscal year 2021-22. This total is truly a testament to the groundbreaking projects that are currently underway at the University.
