PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Dear Alumni and Friends, This was an outstanding year for

Fisk

University

with

unprecedented

fundraising

totals

enrollment

and

rising

numbers. The world of higher education has been challenged and yet, Fisk University is finding a way to counteract the national trends. New degree offerings, campus innovations and a renewed commitment to student success is inspiring interest

among

scholars,

and

students, communities

across the country. During the pandemic, Fisk was able to transition from a fully virtual to a hybrid model in a manner that kept students engaged and contributed to the comparatively high retention numbers. Fisk was one of only six UNCF schools that did not experience a 20% drop-out rate between the fall and the spring semester. Fisk’s successful navigation of the pandemic as well as the improved overall university financials has been widely recognized, and we remain confident in the sustainability of the current trajectory. As Fisk enters this next phase, it is imperative that we forge ahead and address several crucial areas from technology and system needs to campus infrastructure. Some of these projects are already completed while others remain ongoing. The recent surpluses have allowed the University to begin upgrading the campus with renovations of the old race relations building, the Work home, Jubilee Hall, Carnegie Hall, as well as a new athletic field. The Roland Parrish Center for Career Development is in its very final stages, and we are working tirelessly to secure new and improved housing including a 300-bed dormitory. None of these improvements would be possible without your support and we remain profoundly grateful.

Vann R. Newkirk, Sr., Ph.D. President

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni and Friends, Another year has passed, and Fisk continues to persevere and excel. For all the challenges of the new normal, the University once again returned to a version of the in-person instruction

that

defines

Fisk

and

its

unprecedented record of student success and transformation. In these unfamiliar times, Fisk offers the familiar – a home for students to be inspired and to pursue their dreams. These dreams are bold, courageous, and filled with hope of a better tomorrow. From future

researchers

to

artists,

lawyers,

entrepreneurs, nurses, and doctors – Fisk students are gearing up to lead in every sector of the economy. Enrollment continues to increase as students from all over the country and the globe covet the remarkable opportunities and outcomes of a Fisk education. This incoming class competed for the strongest among all HBCUs and US News ranked Fisk third for graduation rates. Fisk closed another year with an operational surplus (now three consecutive), and the overall balance sheet has never looked sturdier. The University raised over $19,000,000, which marked the 5th consecutive year of fundraising records. The future looks brighter than ever, and we trust this annual report provides a small window into the remarkable Fisk transformation, as well as a heartfelt expression of our gratitude for your generosity and support. Fisk Forever,

Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D. Executive Vice President

JUBILEE SINGERS The year 2020-21 was a banner year for the Fisk Jubilee Singers®. The ensemble won its first-ever GRAMMY® in the category of Best Roots Gospel Album, which brought unprecedented attention to the ensemble and Fisk University. In June, the National Museum of African American Music honored the Fisk Jubilee Singers with a Legacy Award, and this recognition was followed by an award from the Americana Music Association and a Dove Award nomination.

8

October 6th marked the 150th anniversary of the Fisk Jubilee Singers®. The 150th anniversary committee, headed by Dr. Paul T. Kwami held several virtual and in-person concerts, including the George L. White Lecture Series, a collaboration with Nashville’s classical music station WPLN and Tennessee Performing Arts Center. WPLN produced a radio story about the ensemble and TPAC created a film featuring the Fisk Jubilee Singers® and the stories of the original nine members of the ensemble. The film was shown to students in the Nashville area and on Public Broadcasting Stations around the country.

Dr. Kwami and the Fisk Jubilee Singers® were highlighted by local, national, and international

press

including

print,

television, panel discussions and podcasts ranging from NBC to NPR, the New York Times and USA Today. The Fisk Jubilee Singers® have inspired audiences, broken barriers and literally built buildings for 150 years. The ensemble continues to open minds, uplift hearts, promote education and inspire audiences across the globe. The unique power of music to change lives reverberates

through

their

every

performance and we are hopeful these timeless voices will continue to inspire for another 150 years.”

CAREER PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT 10

The Office of Career Planning and Development remains a focal point for students as well as the University’s external partners. With the rising cost of education and mounting debt, students and parents justifiably expect universities to deliver a return on investment. Fisk has answered the call with partnerships that position students for unparalleled exposure and long-term success. From internships, to cutting edge programming, fire-side chats, access to executives and mentorships, Fisk has developed an outstanding reputation for providing career ready talent destined for leadership across every sector of industry.

Students are now required to complete professional development hours and despite the hybrid environment, an average of 99 students participated across all sanctioned events. The office hosted 19 virtual career planning workshops in both the fall and the spring semesters averaging 132 students per call/event. The overall percentage of students receiving internships has increased to more than 50% and placement rates and starting salaries have never been higher.

The Executive Leadership series continues to expose students to speakers from the highest echelons of industry. This past year, Pat Ryan the insurance titan and founder of Ryan Specialty Groups(RSG) as well as Kurt Simon the Vice Chairman for Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs, shared their journey and insights with over 200 students. With the support of RSG, Fisk has launched a program focused on risk management and preparing the next generation of leadership in the insurance sector. This is but one of several key industry partnerships that provide students with experiential learning opportunities and a major comparative advantage upon graduation. Coupled with these industry partnerships, Fisk continues to promote its trailblazing financial advancement program in partnership with HomeFree-USA. Now entering its fifth year, this partnership, under the dynamic leadership of alumna Marcia Griffin '71, enables students to better understand their personal finances.

11

FISK UNIVERSITY GALLERIES 12

The mission of the Fisk Galleries remains twofold: 1) to heighten the visibility of its collections through study and interpretation, and 2) to develop the next generation of museum leaders and advocates. This was an exceptional year for the Galleries with widespread National and International recognition for its exhibitions and programs. The galleries received numerous awards for capacity-building, conservation, and expansion of new programs - including an Association of Art Museum Curators Award of Excellence for Online Programming and an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation award to increase accessibility of the collection to scholars, institutions, and the overall community. The exhibitions included Milt Hinton, Playing the Changes, Origins of Influence III: American Modernism, The Sculpture of William Edmondson: Tombstones, Garden Ornaments, and Stonework with Cheekwood. The galleries collaborated with Engine for Art, Democracy and Justice (EADJ) to present two interventions on campus: 1) Leaves on the Grass on the little Theater by internationally acclaimed artist Ibrahim Mahama, and 2) Carrie Mae Weems Covid Take 6 banners on Talley-Brady. EADJ is a transinstitutional initiative between Fisk University, the Frist Art Museum, Millions of Conversations, and Vanderbilt University, to explore the role of art in promoting democracy and justice. Fisk welcomed over 4000 visitors and more than 1000 participants in a dozen virtual programs. The Fisk galleries loaned objects to numerous exhibitions including David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History organized by High Museum; Alma W. Thomas: Everything is Beautiful organized by the Chrysler Museum; and American Art Deco: Designing for the People, 1918–1939 organized by the Nelson-Atkins Museum. The galleries are in the final stages of planning African Modernism in America 1947–1967, which highlights Fisk’s extraordinary African modernist collection and is set to begin touring Fall of 2022.

The Fisk Museum Leadership Program (FMLP) program has expanded to include a Collections Care and Registration module in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The Fisk University Museum Leadership initiative provides innovative practicedbased programs designed to ignite museum related careers of underrepresented minorities. Program participants work with over 200 museum professionals from LACMA, the HBCU Alliance of Museums and Galleries, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, American Federation for the Arts, Frist Art Museum, Tri-star Arts, Princeton University Art Gallery, Winterhur/University of Delaware/ Art Conservation (WUDPAC) This year the 2nd and 3rd FMLP cohorts successfully completed the program. The galleries have built tremendous momentum and are well on their way to realizing the 5-year goal of: 1) developing new partnerships and programs to facilitate access and training for the next generation of artists, art leaders and art advocates, and 2) enhancing the preservation, promotion, and care of the collection. Under the visionary leadership of Director of Galleries and Curator Jamal Sheats, the Galleries are closer than ever to becoming a principal destination for students, scholars, and visitors from around the world.

Philanthropic Highlight

14

“Fisk’s extraordinary contributions to the fabric of American life are well documented and today’s students are eager to continue in the footsteps of those legendary leaders, like Diane Nash and John Lewis, who helped shape a better future and set lasting examples of courage and purpose for all of us,” said Frank Garrison. Amy Garrison added, “Fisk is such an important asset to our ever-changing city, and we wanted to recognize that; Fisk is so deserving of city-wide support, and we are very happy to be in a position to lend ours.

The $2.5 million gift from Amy and Frank Garrison will fund the establishment of an Endowed Chair in recognition of Diane Nash at Fisk’s John Lewis Center for Social Justice as well as an endowed scholarship fund. The Endowed Chair is for the Director of the John Lewis Center and will be named The Diane Nash – Descendants of the Emancipation Chair. According to Dr. Nash, “This is the first and only endowed chair with my name and I am so pleased to have it at my alma mater. This is such an honor, and it belongs not only to me, but also to the thousands of people who participated in the freedom movement with me”.

15

Philanthropic Highlight 16

PHILANTHROPIC HIGHLIGHTS This year marked a record-breaking fundraising year. Fisk received numerous seven-figure donations that included contributions from Cravath, Swaine & Moore, Marsh McLennan, Ryan Specialty Group (RSG)/R.I.S.E Opportunity Foundation, and Frank and Amy Garrison. The Cravath, Swaine & Moore donation will support campus upgrades as well as the John R. Lewis Center for Social Justice. “Fisk has a remarkable legacy as one of our country’s great HBCUs, and our relationship with the University dates back to its founding during Reconstruction,” said Faiza J. Saeed, Presiding Partner at Cravath. “We are proud to continue to support Fisk’s mission and the promise of its diverse student body.” The donation from the RSG/R.I.S.E. Opportunity Foundation will support the development of the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Risk Management Institute. The Institute will focus on preparing Fisk students for outstanding careers in the insurance industry. “The insurance industry provides so many exciting opportunities, and we look forward to seeing Fisk students assume leadership roles within Ryan Specialty and across the industry,” said Michael Blackshear, Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer (Ryan Specialty Group). “This institute is a bold and innovative approach to addressing a need within the insurance industry, and the foundational gift will include faculty, student, and programmatic support,” said Patrick Phillips, CEO of the R.I.S.E. Opportunity Foundation. Fisk University has partnered with Marsh McLennan, the world’s leading professional services firm in the areas of risk, strategy, and people, and announced the launch of RISE, a global MBA fellowship program in partnership with the National Black MBA Association®. A first-of-its-kind program, RISE, which stands for racial inclusion and social equity, will provide second-year Black MBA candidates and graduates in the US, UK, and Canada with an enriching curriculum of practical business knowledge and tools for advocating for social justice within a business environment. As part of RISE, Marsh McLennan’s Executive Committee participated in an intensive social justice module with a team of thought leaders from Fisk. The Director will be essential in repositioning Fisk at the center of the national conversations around race relations and social justice.

UNIVERSITY SERVICE

18

Fisk has always been defined by its students’ commitment to improving the world around them. Today’s students are no different and this past year has truly showcased their perseverance and dedication to those in need. During the fall of 2020 and spring of 2021, Fisk students participated in 428 opportunities with 41 organizations, resulting in more than 30,000 hours of service. At a time where it would have been easy to turn inward, Fisk students turned to their communities and increased the number of volunteer hours. Despite the pandemic, Fisk hosted four major ServiceLearning Events with a total of 937 student participants. Fisk students give back to the community at a rate that is nothing short of trendsetting among institutions of higher education.

Research and innovation are crucial to the University’s mission of educating tomorrow’s leaders and many students actively support Faculty’s cuttingedge projects.

FITNESS

FACILITY

This year Fisk University unveiled a brand-new fitness center in the student union. The new fitness center in Spence Hall features a brand-new weight room, cardio circuit, spin cycling area, and full-service locker rooms. Construction of the Fitness center began last Fall and was completed this Summer just in time for the start of the semester. The fitness center has replaced an old sub shop that had been out of commission. All Fisk students, faculty, and staff have access to the center, which offers state-ofthe-art equipment, workout classes and personal training sessions.

21

E S P O R T S

Fisk University recently completed the construction of its first Esports Arena. The new venue features a 1000 square foot gaming area that houses 15 gaming stations located on the third floor of the John Hope and Aurelia E. Franklin Library. These stations are surrounded by nearly a dozen smart televisions to view gaming competitions as well as multi-level seating for spectators. In conjunction with this development, the University is excited to announce the launch of its first Esports Varsity Team. The team will be the first co-ed team at the institution. ESports team will be given exclusive access to the gaming facility, as well as state-of-the-art gaming equipment.

22

Computer Science Computer Science enrollment has increased dramatically from 30 students in Fall 2019 to 109 students in Fall 2021. This increase can be attributed to the significant number of students who obtain full-time jobs at leading companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon. Moreover, a large majority of computer science students receive competitive internships as early as their first year, thus reinforcing the academic workload with practical industry experience. Last year, software engineers and data scientists from Asurion taught courses related to Natural Language Processing (Fall 2020) and Big Data Analysis (Spring 2021). Since 2014, Fisk University has been part of Google-in-Residence Program, where a Google Software Engineer trains students for competitive computing opportunities, while also teaching an introductory computer science course for all CS Freshman students.

23

ATHLETICS 24

MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH AND NBA LEGEND KENNY ANDERSON IS GAINING TRACTION WITH HIS RECRUITMENT AND BUILDING HIS FIRST FULL TEAM.

The pandemic severely limited the number of in-person events and no area was impacted more than athletics. Unable to compete outside the University, Fisk’s student-athletes focused on training and putting in the extra work in the classroom. As a result, the department’s academic Honor Roll grew significantly with many of the teams exceeding a cumulative 3.3 GPA. Below, is the breakout of the individual teams:

·

Volleyball: 11 athletes.

·

Men's Basketball: 5 athletes.

·

Women's Basketball: 7 athletes.

·

Cheer: 10 athletes.

·

Rage Dance Team: 4 athletes.

·

Men's Soccer: 9 athletes.

·

Golf: 4 athletes.

·

Cross Country: 3 athletes.

Fisk joined the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) and has already started competing during the 2021-2022 academic year. Athletics remains a key focus for the University and with improved recruiting, the coaches are confident that the coming years will bring winning records and increased attention.

25

MARCHING BAND 26

This year saw the genesis of the Fisk University marching band now known as "Music City Sound" . Considering Fisk’s remarkable musical legacy, as well as the increased vibrancy of student life, this revival marked an exciting occasion. Many students applied and the band immediately began auditions. We are confident the University Band will bring added spirit and exposure in the years to come. As one student put it: “I just really wanted to be a part of that process of growing it from day one.”

STAFF FEATURE

Ms. Sheila Smith serves as the Associate Vice President for enrollment management and advancement. Not only is she a Fisk graduate but she has worked at the institution for more than a decade. Her tireless commitment inspires everyone around her, and she is frequently the point of contact for everything pertaining to admissions, financial aid, alumni, and scholarships. AVP Smith’s competence and energy is widely recognized, and no doubt explains the frequently heard phrase ‘ask Ms. Smith’. Administrators like Ms. Smith are instrumental to the success and transformation that Fisk is experiencing, and we are hopeful she stays with us for many years to come.
