oursupport support made thisthis amazing year at Fisk at Your made amazing year University Fiskpossible. University possible.
Dear Alumni and Friends of Fisk, This past year was truly the experience of a lifetime and I could not be more excited to be at Fisk during this transformational time. Fisk is poised to succeed and we are confident that in the next few years, Fisk will be competing for the title of best historically black college. To achieve this goal and to build a sustainable model, we have made a number of changes including right sizing and right fitting. As most small liberal arts institutions search for a sustainable model for the future, there is no question that enrollment growth will be critical to the University’s success. Moreover, we have to be deliberate about programming and providing the best possible services and platform for our students to succeed. In a rapidly changing world, we are deeply committed to delivering the best possible student experience, which includes the most relevant and dynamic curriculum. It is with these strategic goals in mind, that we begin this new academic year and please know, that without you none of this would be possible. Fisk Forever,
Kevin D. Rome, Sr., Ph.D. President

Dear Alumni and Friends of Fisk, Last year marked another record-breaking year with fundraising totals exceeding the previous year by close to $1million. With more than $7.6 million raised, excluding private grants, this was truly a year to remember and none of it would have been possible without your generosity. We also increased alumni participation to 34% with the tireless support of our ambassadors and champions across the country. Several classes even surpassed the 50% mark and we are hopeful that within the next couple of years we can reach our Fisk to 50 goal. We are confident that this tremendous transformation is just the beginning of an unparalleled future and that with your continued support Fisk will reach new heights. With this in mind, we are committed to addressing facilities, programming, scholarships and the endowment. Thank you again for everything you have made and continue to make possible for our inspiring students. Fisk Forever, Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D.
Vice President Institutional Advancement and Strategic Development

“Coming to Fisk as a student athlete; I brought a number of leadership qualities to the table. However, Fisk not only identified my leadership qualities but truly helped to cultivate these skills and to mold me into the leader that I am today. I am so appreciative of the top tier education, exposure, and mentorship that I have received here at Fisk and I look forward to the next chapter of my life. Emani Mhoon '19 Business Major, Mobile, AL

HONORS COLLEGE The Honors College remains a strategic priority and we are delighted about its significant expansion. Many of our students covet the high standards and intense mentoring program provided by the honors college and with a growing number of incoming students seeking to meet the challenging criteria, we have substantially increased the offerings. In November, seven students travelled with Dr. Patrick Fleming to present at the National Association of African American Honors Programs in Atlanta. Nine students graduated with general university honors,
6
an increase of 125% over last year. Seven graduating honors students will attend graduate programs, including Ph.D. programs at UCLA and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, law school at Georgetown, Vanderbilt, and UT Knoxville, and an MSc program at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Medical Science. Finally, one student’s essay on organ markets was published in a peer review journal. The future of the Honors College looks promising and we are hopeful that in the next couple of years we will announce a Fisk University Rhodes Scholar.
"We had another great year in STEM at Fisk University. Along with the strong foundation of our core liberal arts curriculum, Fisk continues to be recognized as having one of the strongest research programs in the country. The National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health continue to fund training programs, individual investigator awards, research centers, and curriculum enhancement that we have used to create a truly unique interdisciplinary learning environment for our students. Our students are publishing papers, winning awards at conferences, and being recruited by the top doctoral institutions in the country such as the University of Michigan, Washington University, and the University of California, Berkeley. It is my distinct honor to be a member of the faculty. Fisk Forever." Steven Damo, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 2017 - 2018 Annual Report

SCIENCE The STEM disciplines remain a critical component of the Fisk experience and its future. A large number of students still pursue the pre-med program with the intent of transitioning to top medical schools. The life-sciences are booming and with the healthcare concentration in Nashville, there are plenty of opportunities for our graduates. This year alone, our extraordinary faculty have secured a number of million dollar grants including one from the National Science Foundation to focus on Bioinformatics and Data Science. The emphasis on computational thinking and quantitative confidence reflects the emerging need to harvest new knowledge from the ever-growing data repositories. Fisk has a rich tradition of scientific discovery and a growing interdisciplinary culture that
8
complements undergraduate courses with course-embedded research and projects. Relatedly, the computer science program continues to grow with more and more students seeking to take advantage of the exciting new programming. Between our outstanding faculty and our Google-inResidence scholar, students are receiving the skills required to land permanent employment at elite technology companies like Google, Apple and Microsoft. This year’s Fisk Research Symposium was even more impressive than last year’s. Fisk students embrace the culture of research and innovation across all the disciplines - showcased by the impressive number of different departments represented at the awards ceremony.
"Thanks to the Presidential Scholarship, I was able to focus exclusively on my studies and receive a high quality education. The small class size has fostered good relations with my professors and peers. I got immense help and support throughout my undergraduate journey. Fisk has offered countless opportunities in college and beyond. For instance, I recently got a chance to attend Goldman Sachs’ HBCU Leadership Summit in New York. During the summer of each of my college years, I completed three internships at Google. I will be joining Google as a full-time software engineer in June 2019 after my graduation. I will always be indebted to Fisk and my professors. The liberal arts education at Fisk has not only shaped my overall development but also helped me look into my inner-self." Bikki Nagarkoti '19

CAREER CENTER This past year, we further expanded our career and professional development initiatives. More and more students are concerned with the value add of individual colleges and we are deeply committed to providing the best possible framework for our students to realize their dreams. To this end, we increased our internship partners with the objective that all Fisk students should eventually have at least one such experience during their university tenure. This year more than 25% of the student body reported having an internship.
We also continue to promote our Executive Speaker series, which gives students first hand exposure to major corporate leaders. Through the support of alumna Marcia Johnson Griffin '71 and a host of financial partners including Wells Fargo, the Center for Financial Advancement continues to provide students with the much-needed financial literacy skills that are often neglected. 10
Fisk students are highly motivated and we, in turn, are dedicated to preparing them from the classroom to the boardroom. A growing number of students are engaged in entrepreneurship and one recent graduate accepted a coordinator position with Launch Tennessee, the startup agency for the entire state. There is a tremendous interest in our students not only here in Nashville but across the country. This year alone, we had nine interns at Google as well as interns at Warner Music and the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City to name a few. We are focused on empowering the next generation of executive leadership and as one student intern summed up her amazing intern experience: “You just don’t know what you don’t know – I feel ready now to embark on my career”.
“The Office of Career Planning and Development is committed to preparing students to be more marketable and competitive when they graduate. We are excited about our new corporate partners, career pathway discussions and co-curricular involvement because they ensure our students are ready for the future! Our primary goal is to increase the number of Fisk scholars and leaders who are successful in their respective careers.

THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS Music remains the heartbeat of Fisk University. This year was no exception in terms of the extraordinary voices and notes that help define this campus. The Fisk music department and its graduates are thriving. This fall, recent graduate Dwayne Mitchell will begin his graduate studies at the Berklee College of Music. The music faculty continue the wonderful tradition of performing and composing across the country from the Phi Mu Alpha National Convention to the Washington National Cathedral.
Along with their many performances, the Jubilee Singers also collaborated with the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) to inspire future generations of singers and Fisk students. The Jubilee Singers have also become a pillar of Nashville's New Years Eve celebration and what better way to ring in the New Year than with those ethereal voices.
We were especially pleased to announce the renovation of the Talley-Curb House. The Talley-Curb house will serve as the new The Jubilee Singers had a number of exciting home of the Fisk Jubilee Singers thanks to performances capped by the unforgettable the generous gift of longtime supporters night with India Arie at the Ryman. SOUNDS OF FISK In April, WFSK, also known as Jazzy 88, celebrated its 45-years of service to Nashville. Its 24/7 unique musical selection of Smooth & Contemporary Jazz has made it “Nashville’s premier Jazz Station”. In 2017, WFSK was named the Best Jazz Station by the Nashville Scene in the Writer’s Choice Category. WFSK carries 20 shows, a blend of national recording artists, talk programs and public affairs broadcasts. WFSK is on the national reporting panel of smooth jazz radio stations for Billboard Magazine and Music Charts.
16
Jazzy 88 is also home to Nashville favorite and award winning talk show "What’s the 411? with Sharon Kay." For the past 17 years, Sharon’s special guests included Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the late Dick Gregory, Ambassador Andrew Young, and all of Nashville’s mayors. WFSK, for the last 12 years, has streamed live at www.wfskfm.org and has over 100,000 listeners globally who tune in online.
"This academic year I have been part of a curatorial team, with colleagues from Fisk University, the Smithsonian, and the Museum of the Bible, that worked together to create an exhibit on The Slave Bible, a rare artifact owned by Fisk University. This Bible, published in 1808, was intended to be used by pastors to slaves in the West Indies, but could’ve also been used in other British colonies of that time. There are only three Bibles extant in the world, and Fisk owns the only copy in North America."

BULLDOG NATION Last year was a great year for the Fisk Bulldogs and we are excited about this coming season. Coach Glover and his men’s basketball team finished with 18 wins and 8 losses, which was the best record since the 1999-2000 season. The women’s volleyball team is stacked with talent and we hope you will have an opportunity to attend some games. Athletics remains one of President Rome's priorities not only because it invigorates school spirit and student life, but also because winning is contagious and Fisk wants to win. Our
18
student athletes are committed to winning both academically and athletically. Going forward, we are also looking to substantially update the facilities and turn our soccer team into a national competitor.
RELIGIOUS LIFE Faith remains a central component of the Fisk experience. The Religious Leaders for Fisk Initiative is a collaborative partnership comprised of religious leaders and spiritual laypersons representing diverse denominations and places of worship. This partnership seeks to increase the levels of advocacy and support for Fisk University from churches and religious organizations.
On July 6, 2017, the Religious Leaders for Fisk hosted a Prayer Breakfast welcoming Dr. Kevin D. Rome, Sr. to the campus of Fisk University. Prayers for the Rome family as well as the University, the city, the nation and the global community were offered by prominent religious figures throughout the region.

GRADUATION Fisk University changes lives and this mission is particularly apparent during graduation season. Every year, Fiskites enter into the work force or graduate schools across the country with the express desire to make their mark on the world. For many of them, this also entails being an inspiration to their families and communities. As we look toward the coming years and the changing requirements of higher education, we must acknowledge the extraordinary past while embracing the promising future. It is with this in mind that Fisk University will continue to
20
promote relevance and provide excellence. New fields, methods and concentrations will be required to meet the demands of an ever-changing world; but we are committed to creating a sustainable platform. At graduation, the 14th Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, reminded students of their critical responsibilities as Fisk graduates. She charged the graduates to serve as the next generation of leaders and to never stop learning.

A KIND AND GENEROUS POSTHUMOUS GIFT Frances R. Delony passed away recently and Fisk University became the startling recipient of a wonderful gift. This was a woman who knew and respected Fisk, but Fisk did not know her. The bequest came about because of her sister, Patty Delony, a three-year member of the Fisk Board of Trustees and current Chair of Fisk’s Financial Strength Committee. Trustee Delony was introduced to Fisk by former Board Chair, Barbara Bowles ’68.
Trustee Delony often talked about Fisk to her sister and lauded the value Fisk adds to Nashville and the U.S. through the success of its graduates around the world. When Frances was preparing her estate plan, having no heirs, she chose to divide her assets among a number of worthy organizations. Sadly,
As young investment colleagues in the early 70s, Patty Delony and Barbara Bowles met on an investment trip to the opening of Disney World. They discovered that they both grew up in Trustee Patty Delony Nashville, less than five miles from each other, but worlds apart. This chance meeting resulted in a friendship that has continued for more than 40 years.
24
Frances died in June; however, her admiration of Fisk and belief in its work and worth became apparent as Trustee Delony delivered the news of Frances’ generous $200,000 gift. Fisk greatly appreciates this magnificent investment, made posthumously by Frances and the on-going financial support, guidance and ambassadorship of Trustee Patty Delony.

You are entitled to an immediate charitable deduction for income tax purposes. Wills and Charitable Bequests - If a will designates IRD (income that is owed to a decedent at the time that he or she dies) assets for charitable bequest, the estate receives both an estate tax charitable deduction as well as an income tax charitable deduction.

MILLION DOLLAR GIVERS This past year, Fisk University received two separate $1million gifts. The first gift was from Rob and Janice Norton whose wonderful commitment to Fisk has lasted for more than a decade. Norton was chair of the Fisk Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2013 and after a period of emeriti rejoined the Fisk board. Rob is a graduate
27
of Princeton University and for a number of years served as the chief human resources officer at Pfizer. "With all the exciting things that are happening under President Rome’s leadership, we felt now was the time to support this transformation with a major gift." Fisk is poised for a bright future and it students are inspiring.
MILLION DOLLAR GIVERS The second gift was from Frank and Robyn Sims whose leadership at Fisk has been equally encompassing and extraordinary. During President Rome’s inauguration, Frank and Robyn were presented with the John Hope Franklin Life-Time Achievement Award for their unparalleled generosity and dedication to Fisk. Besides serving as interim president for nearly two years and helping the university through a challenging
time, Frank Sims also became Chairman of the Board of Trustees in 2017. Robyn Sims '76 has been essential in leading a number of Fisk initiatives including serving on the ambassadors group that is charged with raising alumni participation to 50%. "This gift to Fisk is a reflection of where we think Fisk is going and the importance of people supporting this transformation."
