Expectations, breathtaking views, comradery and of course the opportunity to catch the Fish with a big F. This is how Mörrums-river leaves an impact on our hearts!

In our world, we are but the observers in what we aim to be; your best fishing experience. My colleagues and I want to help you set the stage to build an experience that will be told for years to come.

Before every season we try to make changes for the better. All changes aimed towards you, our guests, so that you will have the most enjoyable of stays by the river. One of the changes we made this season is the allowance of fishing in combined pools, in all pools that is except “the classic one”. In addition to a simplified framework, we also invite you to a free introduction class each week, please read more about it on our website. Our hope is that this simplifies and creates more opportunities for new fishermen. We also have been more generous with fishing times, so that you can enjoy the river when it best suites you!

I would urge everyone to read “ Common sense and behavior“ for you to get the most out of your sessions.

In other news, today there is a new website available with improved opportunities for the online booking of accommodations and fishing licenses, making it faster and more convenient then ever.

Here at the House Of Salmon we are proud to welcome a new shop, All Fly. Together we can now offer a complete in house center of fishing and supplies in The River Mörrum. And of course, don’t forget to stop by and check out our newly facelifted showroom.

The wind is on the uprise, the numbers going through Marieberg have shown a positive trend for several years now and the year 2013 was the best yet in over 25 years! We also received positive signs about the fish in the ocean; the statistics are increasing. We believe that a part of the explanation is the focused work we do with fishermens care, acquisitions of yarn rights, and the enforcement of habitat care. All this work can only be carried out thanks to you.

We met up with the man behind Mörrum River Lodge, an intriguing story of how the challenge of fishing in the river Mörrum brought him back to Sweden.

Rules Every season we overview the rules and regulations of the fishing. Our aim is to offer you simple guidelines to follow, facilitating ease of fishing. Rules may change during the season so keep an eye on the website or ask at Laxens Hus. Amongst new rules that are being set in place for this season are longer fishing times and now all stretches of the river will be available for both spin and fly anglers, besides Pool 1, which of historical reasons remains as a flyfishing pool.

The following rules apply for Kronolaxfiskets stretches of the river These apply for spin and fly fishing for salmon and sea trout. Fishing is to be practiced in the traditional angling manner with only spin or fly rods allowed. A valid licence should be worn in a manner as to make it easily visible at all times and should in conjunction with valid identification be provided upon request. Are you in the least bit unsure as to rules or regulations then feel free to ask.

Fishing season and times The fishing season for salmon and sea trout runs from the 1st of March until the 30th of September. Long term licences day licences are valid from the 29th of March. On the premier day, the 29th of March the fishing times are 9:00 – 17:00. During the remainder of the season the times are 05:00 – 02:00.

Catching, registering and releasing Salmon that have spawned should quickly be returned during the months of March and April. During August and September all females with an adipose fin should be returned quickly.

Fish that are foul hooked – fish that are not hooked in the mouth or pharynx should be unhooked with great care and returned as quickly as possible.

The permitted daily catch allowance is one salmon or sea trout per day. The minimum length for a kept fish is 50cm. Rainbow trout are exempt from your daily quota.

You may return your catch and carry on fishing. Please ensure that upon returning the fish that you show it appropriate care and respect. Once you decide to keep your allocated fish for the day (1 fish), then you must immediately cease fishing. All caught fish should be registered at morrum.com or at the weighing in station

in Mörrum. Returned fish should have their length estimated and kept fish should be measured and weighed at the weighing in station situated at Laxens Hus. The Swims On the river Mörrum you are free to choose the method you wish to use. Spin and fly should strive to get on amicably upon all stretches. The only “Fly-only” Pool is Pool 1.

Common sense and behavior It is easy to write rules for one thing and another but when it comes down to how people behave then it’s a different matter. A fundamental principle would be to treat others as you would like to be treated.

Salmon and sea trout fishing usually requires the angler to exercise mobility to enhance the chance of catching.

Choose your starting point with care. Never jump ahead of another angler. One cast, one step is a good basic rule to adhere to. It is your responsibility to ensure that your fishing does not disturb that of your fellow anglers.

Respect nature. If you are very quiet you may see an elk come down to the river for a drink of water. It is a fine heritage that we are preserving for the coming generations. Always use facilities provided such as wastepaper baskets and toilets, park your vehicles in designated areas and as far as possible always use established paths and tracks through the nature. If you wish to make a fire please use the designated grill areas.

That the fishing in Mörrum can run so smoothly is largely down to the goodwill of 50 or so private land owners.

Show them respect and thanks by not damaging their property or disturbing those residing along the river.

Catch and release During the fishing season a lot of the caught fish will be returned to their natural environment. This is partially regulated by voluntary catch and release practiced by anglers and to an extent by a set of rules stipulating which fish may be kept.

A basic requirement is that you should always handle the fish with great care. It is always your own responsibility to handle these beautiful creatures with the respect they deserve. Always try to minimize the time spent drilling the fish. The fish may take damage during a fight due to a high production of lactic acid in the muscular structure.

Of course when pressing a fish that little bit harder you may increase the risk of not landing it, however this is a better alternative than trying to return a fish that has gone belly up. At slightly higher water temperatures, significantly above 16 degrees, it is risk filled releasing a fish that has endured a long, hard drilling process.

Do not drag the fish up onto dry land, unhook it with forceps or pliers while it is still in the water. If the hook is extremely difficult then sever your trace. We always recommend that you fish with barbless hooks to facilitate a practical catch and release.

Exposure to air will always be detrimental to the fish, a quick photo is always a possibility but do not exercise that option if it will have a major adverse effect on the fishes health. Try to retain the fish in the water as much as possible.

When handling the fish remember to wet your hands first. The fish are covered in a layer of slime that is antibacterial. Damaging this layer may expose the fish to risk for infections. Never lift the fish by its pharynx or hold it by the tale with its head down. The health of the fish should always be a priority.

A good photo, length and weight notations are of secondary importance.

See catch and release as a fantastic opportunity for selective fishing in our waters and remember it is always practiced under great personal responsibility.

Fishing-licenses and prices The prices of the permits may vary depending on the season, stretch or fishing pressure. The easiest way to find out what a fishing license cost the particular day or days you want to fish is to look into our website, www. morrum.com . Scroll through to the “online booking “ and then fill in the date for how many days you want to fish on each stretch.

Angling Some stretches of the river has the possibility for angling. We have two different types of angling permits.

Summer Angling card- most meant for our younger fishermen and summer tourists.

Price: 50sek/day for adults. Free for youth.

Max 1 rod/person Time: June 1-August 31 Location: Pool 3 Specimencard - mostly meant for those of you who have been fishing for many years and has extensive experience in this fishery.

Price: 250sek/day Max 2 rods/person Time: April 15 to February 28 Places: The card is valid for the east side Härnäs , parts of Knaggalid and pool 3 , 5, 6 , 7, 18, 25, 26.

Special rules for angling According to the regulations of the national board of fisheries (FIFS 2004:37)fishing rods may ot be baited with worm, also it is not permitted to target or catch salmon, sea trout or hybrids thereof. Float fishing or fishing with weighted casting floats is allowed but should not be allowed to impede other fishermen. Wading is not allowed when angling. Anglers are always expected to let fly fishermen or spin fishermen “fish through”.

Equipment and strategy There are many different species in the river Mörrum.

Your choice of equipment and technique should be adapted for the species you are targeting.

Bigger, heavier predators such as pike, zander and even larger perch demand a heavier rod, stronger line and more powerful hooks. Rods between 11 and 12 foot in length, with some backbone to them are to be recommended. A wire trace is also a good suggestion to ensure that razor sharp predator teeth don’t sever your line when hooking into the fish. Predators quite often like to “run” with their prey, especially the pike which will gladly pick up the bait and move away some distance before stopping, turning the prey in its mouth and then enjoying its meal. With this in mind so called “baitrunner” reels are to be recommended, these will allow the fish to pick up the bait and run with it, with little to no resistance being offered, they still allow the angler to strike at their leisure.

Advisable line dimension and type is 0,30mm to 0,35mm mono.

For slightly lighter fishing for species such as bream, tench, chub etc you can reduce line diameter to a mono between 0,15mm and 0,25mm. A so called “feeder” rod or “swing tip” rod is recommended, 11 – 12 foot being the perfect length. “Baitrunner” type reels are also optimal for this type of fishing as the fish in the river Mörrum are in good condition, powerful and aggressive. They are more than capable of making powerful, surging runs in the strong current. Ledgering will probably give you the best results but fishing the float may provide more activity and entertainment, this also gives you the added advantage of being able to fish different layers of water quite easily. A gliding rig will give you good results as you are minimizing the resistance the fish will feel when taking your bait. When the going is a bit slow or the water temperature has dropped quickly then it may be a good idea to test a swim feeder. This is basically a ledgering weight with a small cage or container built onto it in which you can place groundbait or other delicacies which may entice the fish. Some bread crumbs mixed with whatever hook bait you are using is often an effective combination.

Ledgering weights between 15-25g are often sufficient although you may have to increase this on certain stretches or if there is a powerful current. Hook and bait (please note: worm is totally forbidden) are adapted to the species of fish you are targeting.

Larger hooks and larger baits will generally attract larger fish and will keep the smaller fish away. An unhooking device or pliers are always recommended. Respect your catch!

our stretches Our stretches offers a varied fishing experience. From Härnäs the classic Pools 1-32 in the south, owned by Kronolaxfis- The Härnäsareas 3.7 km long fishing stretch is the upperket to the new, northern sections which we lease of E.ON most of the three- fish distances that Mörrum in 2005 had access to through a lease agreement with E.ON. It begins just Pool 1-32 south of Hovmansbygd and ends about 100 meters upstream The traditional Kronolaxfishing stretch, where they have fished of the fishway at upper Hemsjö power plants. The whole since 1941 covers approximately 7 km of the river’s lower fish route is within “Kärringhejans” nature reserve , which reach. Knaggalid As “Ekeberg” is located below the powerstation in Svängsta Knaggalidarea, a scenic gem with wonderful rapids where you have the chance for early salmons already in May and one may use spin and fly everywhere. Male or female?

Differentiating between male or female fish is not always easy, especially so, as both salmon and sea trout change their appearance as the season progresses. Hopefully the following information will help you in determining the gender of your catch.

The male salmon is the fish that is prone to the greatest degree of change in appearance. At the end of April when the fish begins to move upstream it is silver in colour and extremely well built. At this stage of the season it is probably the most difficult to differentiate between male and female. The male has a slightly more pronounced “beak” than the female, basically a minor elongation of the lower and upper jaw. During autumn the fishes head will increase in size and the lower jaw will develop into more of a “hook”. The coloration is black through brown with smaller reddish patches. Spots are for the larger part situated above the midline of the fish. At this point of the season the female can be perceived as being extremely long and of great size, she does not display the oversized head or the pronounced “hook” jaw. Quite often the female will display a slight protrusion, similar to a wart upon the lower jaw. This is not to be confused with the males “hook”. The autumn coloration will be black through brown with the belly sometimes showing shades of blue through purple. The female will not display the reddish patches common in the male. Again spots will mostly be situated above the midline of the fish.

In conjunction with our own vastly experienced staff and freelance entrepreneurs we offer fishing guidance along the river Mörrum. The river Mörrum is a challenging body of water to fish. The usual swims that provide 80% of the catches can quickly change due to water speed and water temperature. Situated by Kungsforsen (The Kings Rapids) in central Mörrum, we have the fishing Centre for the river. The Centre houses the fishing office, a tackle shop and hosts an exhibition which documents the life of the salmon and presents a historical overview of the fishing. Laxens Hus is at the heart of operations. Besides hosting the fishing office, tackle shop and exhibition it also serves as the workplace for Kronolaxfiskets(The Royal Crowns Salmon Fishing) staff, features a fish hatchery and Kungsforsen restaurant. The official weighing in and testing station for all kept fish caught is also situated here.

During the fishing season this becomes a natural meeting place, where the air is laden with fishing tales, useful tips, hints and news of fine catches. For those not participating in the fishing it is the most accessible area for watching anglers and their endeavours. The entire area is handicap friendly and there are also conference facilities available.

Shop and Exhibition In Laxens hus you can find an intresting exhibition as well as the tackle shop - All-Fly. Inside Laxens Hus you will find our exhibition highlighting the life of the salmon and the challenges it faces. Here you will find out more about the history of the river Mörrum and its fishing. In our 13 meter long aquarium you can view some of the species that inhabit the river Every Thursday at 14.30 we offer a guided tour of the House Of Salmon for those with an admission ticket.

The Surroundings Both locals and visitors from far and away come here to fish and to partake of the unique environment offered by the river, to try out the Kungsforsen restaurant or to view the aquarium housed next to the exhibition. Here you can meet the mighty salmon without having to wade out into the current of the river, partake of the history that has made Mörrum an Eldorado for angling enthusiasts from around the world.

The angling as we recognize it today first started to take shape in 1941. Each year tens of thousands of anglers, from many countries will visit Mörrum trying to catch one of its salmon or sea trout. Our exhibition documents the lives of the fish and other animal life found in the area, it also details the history of the sport fishing. You can view live salmon and sea trout in our 13 meter long aquarium. There are also models depicting the different stages of development of the salmon and sea trout, from egg to fully grown ocean going fish. There are also beautifully detailed casts of record sized fish caught in the river. Kungsforsen and its surrounding areas are an attraction in themselves that yearly lure hundreds of thousands of visitors from all around the world that wish to partake of the fine wandering opportunities through the Mörrum river valley. At the right time of year you will be privileged to see the salmon leaping in the river.

Alongside the river are several nature reserves and the river in its entirety is a “Natura 2000” area. One popular wandering route which tells the tale of the river and its cultural heritage is called Laxaleden(Salmon route) . This route is a 30km long cultural trek with the river Mörrum as its main theme.

The route is situated between Hovmansbygd and Elleholm.

Along this route you will find a hundred or so information boards detailing the history and culture along this fish abundant and powerful body of water.

History There is a lot of exciting history relating to fishing in the river Mörrum. In our exhibition you will find fascinating descriptions of this past.

Long ago the implement of choice for catching salmon in the river Mörrum was the spear or trident. Era by era new tools appeared, such as salmon tubs, landing nets, weighted drifting nets and regular stationary nets often made from wool.

Many of these methods were still in use as recently as the 1960s but now all commercial activity has ceased. However some of the traditional stationary swims for this fishing can still be seen, notably at Kungsforsen and Hönebygget. During certain days during the summer and in conjunction with the autumn procurement of breeding salmon for the hatchery, some traditional methods may still be seen in use. All remaining salmon and sea trout fishing is practiced as pure sports fishing.

Mörrums Kronolaxfiske has been run as a sport fishing destination since 1941. Fishing Master Gunnar Johansson began to develop what we today can proudly title as the crown jewel of Swedish sport fishing, one of the most renowned salmon and sea trout fishing waters in the world.

OTHER THINGS

TO DO

If you one day find some time on your hands after a day of rod swinging then you have loads of activities and sights to enjoy around Mörrum and Karlshamn. Most of them just minutes away. Weather you want to continue fishing, enjoy nature or activate yourself in some other way you will always find something that will satisfy your senses.

Mentioned below are some activities that should satisfy all and they are just a small part of what Karlshamn county has to offer.

A living archipelago Where Mörrum-river meets the sea another big fish adventure begins. If you haven’t gotten rid of your fishing fever, The archipelago of Blekinge provides one of the greatest pike fisheries in the world. Here you can easily enjoy the freedom that the archipelago provides and at the same time effectively fish for Pike. The fish is mostly pursued in the shallows where the pike stand in line waiting for schools of baitfish to come. If you do some searching on the internet you will quickly find skilled guides to assist you in your chance to succeed. If you want to give the fishing a break and do something else then a tour with one of the archipelagos ferries is very recommended. You could easily spend a whole day here if you took the early tour. Then you would have the chance to spend your day on some of the many beautiful islands and then jump on the late ferry back to mainland. Thanks to the tour boats one can easily enjoy all of the archipelago in one day. You get to experience the inner archipelago and the outer water surrounding it.

The gorgeous Eriksberg Eriksberg is the place to visit if you want to have an extraordinary nature experience where the richness in species is astounding. Here, among other things, you have the chance to try on carp angling, world class pikefishing, or crayfish fishing in one of the lakes in the reservation.

The area is one of Europes largest fenced natural reserve with 7 square miles of land on the coastline. With royal leaf trees and impressive cliffing landscape. Here you can take your car or enjoy a guided tour through a rich landscape filled with crown game, wildboar, euro bison and mouflon sheep. The safari tour is about ten kilometers long and is mostly inspired by the wild animals.

At the mansion, which was raised in the sixteen hundreds, where there is both a restaurant and a café. There are a lot of activities for an adventuress visitor. Karlshams golf course provides the golfer with a real challenge in a beautiful environment.

36 holes spread out over a new and an older course. The old one is designed by the famous Scott Douglas Brasier and offers a golf course seldom seen. The course is beautifully surrounded by bark and leaf trees. At the 15th hole you get to play next to the majestic Mörrum-river.

The course got finished in 2004. This course is somewhat narrower where you have to use your fantasy to find you own way to the green. It has become very popular, mostly thanks to its dens fairways and well managed greens. The nine first holes are Pay & Play so there is room for friend who don’t have their green card.

ABU Museum, Svängsta The making of Abu Garcia fishing tackle started here in 1939. Before they started making fishing gear pocket-watches were made in this factory.

This business got started in 1887 by Henning Hammarlund. Caretaker C A Borgström bought the factory in 1920 after a liquidation. From 1921 to 1943 the factory also made taxi meters, pocket watches and fishing gear. In 1977 the factory became one of the country’s finest industrial museums. If one wants to visit the museum you can easily book a guided tour or visit the museum in the summer at its prime of the season. Next to the museum is the Abu-Shop where you can find Abu´s whole range of tackle. Just around the corner is the actual factory that makes the world famous Ambassadeur-reels till this day. It was started in 1952 and each year it send out over a 100 000 reels all around the world.

Culture and History If you are culturally interested the variety huge in both older and newer historical sights. There are several ancient remains in the area where ancient drawings which gives us an insight in to how the people lived of the nature surrounding our archipelago, before our time. Karlshamn City has historical traces of battles between Sweden and Denmark. It was among other thing struck badly by the plaige when it roamed in Sweden. A beautiful part of the city is the culture blocks where a lot of well kept older houses that either has some sort of show or little cute shops. Another interesting sight to visit is the citadel which is an easily accessible tourist attraction in the summer. Its an old defensive structure which was built in 1675 as Denmark declared war against Sweden. You can get here by taking one of the ferries from the port. The sacrificial grove in Halahult or Asarumsdalar also bear witness to ancient history. Emigrant-monument is worth visiting. It was built to symbolize the emigration to America where Karlshamn acted like a emigration port. As you can tell Blekinge has a long history and this is just a portion of what the area around Karlshamn has to offer.

Many of them depending on the waters movement and weather I am fishing for Trout or Salmon. For Salmon I would say pool 1 in high water hopefully over 50m2/s. In god conditions pool 4 is one of the greatest pools in the world. But my personal favorite as it comes to Salmon is pool 12, for Sea Trout I would choose pool 17.

If you only got to fish one fly, which would it be?

Thunder and Lightning.

How big was your biggest Salmon?

In Mörrum a silver-blank one at 17.5 kg, Canada Petite Cascapedia around 20 kg, Norway Gaula 15.2kg.

Mörrum (Fall) 9,9 kg, in the Pukavik-bay a silver-blank 10,2 kg, The Em-river (Fall) 11+ kg.

Steelhead but mostly I just go out Cod fishing.

Thankfully enough I don’t have any sketchy stories. Most of the time the guests as happy when you check them, they start asking questions and ask for tips on how to trick and catch these salmon and trout.

There are many but the salmon-season 1994 was just magical. From the first days of May until a couple of weeks in to June the fishing was extremely good. Low water temperature a lot of water and giant schools of Salmon every day.

This angler was lightly expressed round on his feet. He had already thrown in his lure as I was to telling him that he could not spin fish this pool, as a fish suddenly strikes his lure in the first cast.

he got to keep the fish if he landed it. To which I strictly said no. After an unstable fight the fish showed itself to be a bigger Pike. After which I gave him the green light to take the fish upon success. After a minute or two of close combat the line broke and the rod straitened. But the guy continued to reel as if the fish was still on and nothing had happened. He kept on reeling until the line was all in his reel after which he asked me where the fish had gone. To which I simply answered that it went away. With his drunk eyes he looked over on another angler standing up river and asked him;; why in the hell did you cut my line? He answered surprised that he had not cut his line. After I talked him down one of the mans friends came and took him home. After this a thought it was over, but no.

The next morning I was out on my rout. In the sports fishing office one of the staff asked me if I had been to pool 4 last night. Which I confirmed and asked what the concern was. He said that there had been a regretful guy in this morning, telling them that he had spin fished in the fly-pool and apologizing for it. But he was very upset that a bailiff had come and cut his line.

Which is then you favorite memory from this river?

In 1976, when I was thirteen. On an early morning in the beginning of May I throughout a Killer-wobbler on the east side of pool 4 as a 5.1 kg sea trout took the lure. That was my first trout in Mörrum-river and even though I have caught more and larger trout and salmon trough out my life, still it is this memory that had dug itself deep in to my soul. And I can assure you that that is the greatest fish I have eaten until this day.

Nothing really exiting to tell you. You meet nice anglers all along the river.

Sometimes you meet a guy that says; I have been fishing here for this and that long and never met a Bailiff. 99 percent of the time people are happy to see us on our rounds.

Without a doubt my 105 cm salmon that went in at 16.4 kg, a fish I caught the first of May 2004. My second salmon ever. I held my head up high the rest of that day.

Oj, there have been so many. My best one is from a early morning in the mid 90´s. We were a gang of friend relaxing at pool 12. Suddenly the pool filled up with fish and we started fishing, that day we all went home with a big-catch.

We have spoken to Ulf Sill about his thought process concerning his tying and how to fish the flies at their best. Spring, summer and fall.

Could you describe the most important factors concerning a good Salmon fly?

The flies capabilities are mostly dependent on the fishing situation at hand. In a cold and high river you want to have a fly that has good visibility, much volume, strong colors and a lot of contrast and flash. If you fish in a warm low water condition where the water is clear the wished for capabilities change drastically. More slimmer flies with less volume that easily melt in to the environment. Night fishing for salmon is pure silhouette fishing and there is no color that is seen as clear as black against the night sky. The silhouette can be increased by adding rubber legs, flash, disks or muddler-heads. I prefer flies with less weight and feel that is better to let the sink tip of the line push it down towards the bottom instead of tying heavier flies that move lifelessly trough the water. I think that A fly should be tied so that it almost suspends in the water, especially in the more calm parts of a river where the current can’t take over and push the fly to a right position. The easiest way to accomplish this is to use short tubes like US-Tube or longer plastic tubes. Which are balanced with a brass-pipe in the front of the fly. The colors are not definite, its more the principal. Light colors in dark waters, dark colors during rainy and dark days, light colors during sunshine and contrasting colors if you are to fish the night.

How do you choose material?

There is much thought behind every material choice I make. I have learned that however good you are at tying flies, if you don’t have the right material the results will not be satisfying. I always choose a bit heavier materials when it comes to the underwings of my flies, this in order to lift the wing of the fly, then a softer material for the rest just to get it as life like as possible. I prefer fox hair in all its form, unlike temple dog which I use very seldom. New favorites are Future Fly´s American Opossum and Tanuki. Opossum has an amazing sparkle in its hairs which is a lot like a polar bears shine and Tanuki. These are very soft and make a wonderful material to use for your wing. The Tanukin has more shine to it than for example fox body-hair does. This gives the fly a slightly diffused movement in the water. In short you can say that material choice is always dependent on the fishing situation at hand! A bound Garry with stiff polar bear or buck tail can be very effective in cold conditions with strong water flow. On the other hand there is nothing that beats a Micro-tube with extremely soft hairs during the summer- and fall fishing after salmon.

Two extremes that are just as effective if you use them under right circumstances.

What abilities or which moments, while tying a salmon fly, do you consider most?

The wing! I believe that it’s the fly´s movement and its silhouette that attracts the fish. There is a huge difference between show- and fish-flies! It is nothing less than wonderful to be able to create little pieces of art at the tying table. With advanced bodies and a lot of different heckles. But it’s the fly´s ability to move in the water that triggers the bite, and the wings are responsible for this. I would like to take a stand and say that some dubbed bodies restrain the fly´s motion in the water. Thanks to its holding on to the material in the wings. But I can’t deny that is a lot more pleasant to catch a fish on a beautiful fly.

Which is your favorite fly?

It is very hard for me to just choose ONE fly. If I would have to I think I could go a season in Sweden and Denmark’s murky waters with three patterns.

Beiss-fly, Rapala, and the KHK 13. These three patterns cover all the possible situations. From the start of the season to summer- and night fishing, still keeping all the appropriate abilities for fishing salmon in the fall. A KHK 13 and a Beiss is mostly on the end of my trace anyway, so.

Does the salmon really care which fly is served or are there other circumstance that triggers it to bite?

I don’t think that a salmon really cares about the look of the fly, its most likely that other factors are in play when it decides to strike. But I also think this can vary. Sometimes you have to cast until the fish strikes the fly out of rage and other times a fly-change is the way to get a reaction. On the other hand I don’t really think that it’s the change of the fly that is the active factor but the break that it provides.

the stream and as you sweep past the fly give you that back-drag feeling in the rod as it sucks in the fly. I also believe that the speed with which you fish the fly is much more important than the fly itself. If you’ve had a reaction on your fly like a swirl behind it or a little nibble, then the greatest tactic that you can apply is to. Reel in some line and step a meter or two downstream to present the fly again. This time a lot faster! This usually results in violent bites.

How should one fish his flies during spring fishing?

Both salmon and sea trout are very bite-friendly and they have spent the winter in the river. Also the rising trout when they come swimming upstream from the Baltic in search of nutrition. In the beginning of the season it usually a lot of big flies with flash that do the trick. Orange and combinations with this color is unbeatable for especially rising trout.

“Old fish” especially if it has been caught a couple of times can become skeptical after a couple days of fishing. Then they tend to strike darker and smaller flies. The wing length of the flies should be between 7-12 cm depending on the water temperature, water mass, color and weather. Usually one can assume that bigger flies are to be fished when there is much water moving through, low water temperature, murky water and bad weather.

A rule should be that the more water and the colder it is the deeper you should fish. That’s I use heavier flies and sinkand sink tip lines. The fish most often rests in calmer water du save its energy. Fish slowly and deep with a suspending fly. You angle you cast and “mend” upstream to slow down you fly’s speed. As soon as the water temperature goes up to around 8 degrees Celsius the fish start to become more active and more willing to rise towards the fly.

The salmon fishing during May? Fishing in May can be very variable seen as to the water masses that pas trough differ between 9 and 60 m3/s as the water temperature goes between 8 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Usually the first salmons are caught between April and May when we usually have a high water flow and a temperature between 10 - 12 degrees. At that moment you could use the same wing length on your flies as you would during spring fishing. The colors almost don’t matter. Orange, brown, black or ginger and all the Beiss colors. It is all about finding the right fish.

When the water pressure drops and the temperature starts to rise, usually in middle of May. Smaller flies are most often “the right medicine”. The same patterns are used as earlier in the season but a lot smaller in size. With a wing span of 2 - 5 cm. When the water becomes a bit warmer and less murky, black flies like the “KHK 13”, “Black & Silver”, flies with a bit more shy coloring. Such ass all the Beiss flies and the Ullsocken are mostly dominant. During the fishing in may most exclusively use floating-, intermediate- and sinktip lines. This should be complimented with different kinds of sinking traces. You don’t need to scrape the bottom as the salmon will rise to take the fly. At this time you should fish the fly faster than during spring fishing. The salmon often reacts better to a fly that’s moving fast toward its position. The warmer the water gets the more you should star “angle-ing” your casts.

Summer?

This time a year it better to focus you fishing in the mornings and evenings. The fish, especially the larger salmon pull back to deeper areas in the river and are a lot harder to trick. It becomes “simpler” in the rapids, for example in pool 8 – 11, Åkrokenströmmarna and Hönebygget. Here the younger fish is more willing to react to a fast fished fly. At the same time the evening- and night-fishing after the season’s first “Fall-Trout”. It is not uncommon that the first ones come upstream as early as in the end of May. You should fish the neck of the current if you are hunting for trout.

And then at fall?

Now there are fish in all of our pools. The night become longer and colder as the water temperature drops. Salmon that has been standing in the deeper parts of the river start to move and become active again. The trout starts to rise upstream in large numbers. You can also fish midday as long as the water temperature is below 20 degrees. Sunny fall days are not bad for salmon fishing. If it is the trout that you are after the best time is one hour before and after sunset. Small flies during the day is the way to go, during dusk middle sized flies are preferable and in the night large black flies that provide

a lot of contrast against the night sky. There is a difference between salmon and trout-fishing in the fall. The salmon prefers a little deeper area with an even current, like ”Hästhagen” (the horse paddock), ”Röda stugan” (the red cottage), ”Danskvallen” (the Danish dyke), ”Husvagnsrakan”, lower Vittskövle and practically every inlet to the pools.

Trout usually does not move before dusk and carefully moves upstream during the dark hours of the day. Trout are somewhat more careful than salmon and prefers a fly that is “sweeped” over its head. Salmon often reacts better to a faster fished fly. Put on your headlights, sea-trout fishing in the evenings is very exciting!

G

ood stretch, a discreet little “plop”.

The little fly lands next to the tree that steers the stream back in to the middle of the river where it meets the rest of the stream. The pressure is the strongest here in the squeezed center of the inlet stream. Just as the fly slows down a little in its path across the river it suddenly starts to get nibbled and chewed on. I can clearly feel it. The stream is even and nice, my contact with the fly is completely without interference. I am just enjoying myself I know that in a moment it is going to stop and in a moment I will be standing with my rod bent. The fly gets chewed on for about 4 meters before the irritation and anger take over the small salmon males instincts.

Everything is perfect. The weather, all else is constant. A little warm and sticky, impossible to put on the right amount of clothing. It just stopped raining and the sun is slowly working its way

through the clouds. An optimal September morning know that more are coming today. I also know that we are going to have miles of wet salmon and trout dreams to ourselves. Me and my friend, “the barn door” Henka Ohlsson from Forshaga. It can often be like this in Härnas. Damn good fishing and no people in an unbeatable environment.

A confession of love Piss-ditch, Put and take, line-fishing, attitude fishing, Spinning John, bloody Swede, bloody Dane and German. You know how it can be with them you love. If someone downgrades or talks shit about those you hold dear you have to defend, put it in its place. Simply “put down the locker”. Here is my locker. I love Mörrum River, I am addicted to it. And I do not recognize the negative stuff that I get to read and hear about. You choose you self if you want to push, pull and stand in line. I don’t really like it. That’s why I choose not to do it. Mörrum is huge and there are so many great spots to be fished. Independent of weather you choose to fish in Mörrum- town or higher up in the system. This text is about Härnas, but I might as well have used it for Knaggelid, Vittskövle or pool 1 – 32.

Henka takes a “hundred percenter”

Hundred percent toboggans Härnas is the highest of the fishing stretches that goes under the supervision of Mörrums Salmon-fishery. The swim is about four kilometers long and is between Hovmansbygd in the north to Hemsjö power-plant in the south. It is a spring and fall area where the fishing usually starts in September. You should keep an eye on the fish-counter in Hemsjö. When you can see that there has risen a couple of fish then it is time to do some fishing. Although you should not stare yourself blind on the meter, the last years there have passed a lot more fish than those that got registered.

The whole area is pure wilderness and the only swim that provides you with that “one with nature” feeling. Here are no roads or buildings. The only thing that tells the tale of human activities is and old railroad that is covered with dirt and acts like a bike trail. The dirt road is so long and straight that it actually pressures the psyche as you walk it. If not for the beautiful character of Mörrum River every hundred or so feet you would have fast obtained the feeling that you are in the into to Allo, Allo (Secret Army) from 1977. Especially if it’s an foggy, early September morning than you really need to focus to stay in the present. I would not want to be without this long dirt-road, it fulfills its own purpose. You notice this as you become more familiar with the

spot. You can read the topography and from that know where to fish by observing where the river seems to be furthest from the road.

Where you no longer see the river, it is usually here that it gets squeezed and interesting. If you then do a 90 degree turn and walk down to the river, you will almost always come to a gorgeous “Pin” . Created by a hard inlet stream that becomes wider and calmer ending up in a deeper pool that finishes of with a great current-neck of these pools have reserved the fitting name the “hundred percenter”. Of course it is not only these blind and deaf pin that are hot spots on this stretch. There is a lot of discovering to do here. On spot that you just cannot miss is the “Rondell banan”.

Rondell Banan is a small, quite short and a very hard pool. Which gets created when to water presses up agains the embankment in a strange angle. When it hits the embankment the stream pans out and follows the wall for about 50 meters. Here the water erosion has dug a channel just a couple meters wide. I believe that it would feel just like this if I was fishing in a toboggan. Short casts with a lot of upwards mend connections every drift, even if there isn’t a good water flow. If you hook a fish here you are going for a ride. So far I have had the luck to hook two. Both the times the fish came out as the victor.

Fishing – Jesus has been here - Henka, I got a fish on!

I shout down to Henka, who is fishing the rivers finest drop-off. He has just got his line out and is slowly making his way towards the tempting threshold. I stand just 100 meters from him, fishing in the inlet. The inlet which is architect designed by fishing – Jesus. He has been so kind as to put a tree out in to the river perfectly. This makes the stream turn out in an optimal angel. The bite came a lot earlier and a lot higher up in the stream than I would ever think. A perfect bite, a perfect four meter chew-strike. It was Henka, my yearly guest that was supposed to catch the first fish. Lucky me, a salmon male. Not that big, but very pretty and a worthy opponent. Henka reaches me at the end of the fight, he is just as excited as me. He understands. We don’t need to speak a word. It going to be a magical day. Henka goes in where I got up, we are both convinced that there is more to catch at this inlet.

I go back to where Henka had started.

I don’t even get the chance to start as Henka is calling for me. I run up with my camera ready. What a sight, what an awesome sight. My best friend with a smile ear to ear holding a heavily bent rod in an environment that some don’t get to witness during a whole lifetime, angler or not. I the middle of our Serengeti stands the Barn Door from Värmland. He salmon fights wildly, flashing all the colors in the spectrum. The only thing that is bothering my photography is a Grey-Heron that glides graciously over this river-valley. You can imagine how perfect this moment was.

He has a back like an ancient Nordic shield. He is super kind and almost scary focused. The type of person you wouldn’t what to play a round of TP with, he would pulverize you. Henka always brings cool stuff and is supremely grateful. My kids usually get a toy each, in an educational purpose.

Never anything flashy made out of plastic that you just can’t turn of. My wife gets a bottle of wine and I get what I love most, brownish colored beverages and free fishing days. My kids love Henka, and so does my wife. It is important, this give me the opportunity to really relax and fish with piece of mind during Henkas yearly visit. As if I was in Norway or Scotland.

Hardcore fishing and nerdy talk, man style. Or I stand corrected. Before it was man- talk now is baby- daddy- talk. Post people think that you fish like a maniac just cause you got the river so close. That could not be further from the truth.

I think that a fishing tourist that comes here and stays in a cabin next to the river for a few weeks has more effective fishing hours a year than we “locals” do. We on the other hand have the luxury to choose those perfect days. What makes is so fun when Henka comes to visit is that I get to fish like a tourist. I am born and raised as a Surjämte. Majestic and fish-rich forest rivers have raised me. It is not just the view and the feeling of fishing this part of Mörrum River that gets my thoughts back home to Jämtland.

This day the bites are so many that they remind me of some great grayling fishing in my small hometown streams.

The colors of the fall don’t just embrace the life above the surface

It has happened that I have driven here, even though I know that the fish is yet to come upstream. Just to get my fix of this “Norrland-looking” part of Blekinge. We feel quite satisfied me and “The barn door”, calm and very de-stressed. We take the time to breath in and keep this memory.

After a while I go back as Henka stays where he caught his salmon. My first cast as I get back I strike in to a bigger fish. As soon as its hooked the hook pulls, felt like a trout. 15 casts later as my fly passes over the neck, my rod bends and I hook in to a small salmon that comes in friendly all the way. Henka hooks another one above me, but this one was not willing to be landed. This continues on the next spot and the next. A couple lost some landed. Most of the fish we caught where between 2 and 3 kilos. The trophy fish of the day was a gorgeous brass-colored trout at about five kilos.

As a sportfisher you gather lots of memories throughout the years. Some you remember for life, others make you fly above the clouds but then fall in to history. Until that day that you open the photo album, read your fishing-diary or find an old fly in the bottom of your box. Suddenly you get swept back in your dreams and the warm fuzzy feeling returns. But why is the memory so clear in some cases? One can wonder. The reason is of course different for every fisherman.

For me personally the smallest of details that make it in to that extraordinary experience.

The Smolt

There is something fascinating with an early salmon.

It dosen´t really matter if it is you or someone else that caught it, it is still something out of the ordinary.

To catch the first rising fish is a dream for most Mörrum anglers, but it’s a very hard task to pursue, its only one a year. I still haven’t had the luck to be first, just a day or two away…

This spring has been very old and the grass is still to become green, even though it was May. To be honest I did not expect any salmon to have risen upstream. A salmon had shown itself a time or two in pool 15. Just above what is known as ”Lastan” on the east side of the river, parallel to the priest oak. We were a couple guy trying to make it bite, but without success. The wing was ice cold and the spring sun hardly warmed us. If it wasn’t for the salmon that kept on rising to the surface, we all would have gone home hours ago. The theories were many as to why a salmon that just took a position in the pool did not want to show any interest flies. Was it still too cold in the water, something wrong with the pressure or did we just present our flies in a wrong way? Maybe it wasn´t a new fish, but an old thin female that stopped and over-wintered in this pool on her way back to the sea?

I stand on a rock talking to a friend of mine. At the same time I am fishing of the pool for the second or third time. So my concentration is not really at its peak. Suddenly I get a bite, just where the salmon had shown itself. Finally, I think to myself and strike the fish.

A pour smolt flies a meter through the air, thanks to my rods power. The little rascal must have been chocked, at least just as surprised as I was. The fish went back and I threw out the fly to the same spot again. It hardly lands before its struck again, this time a more careful pull on the line. Another smolt! I make a much more careful strike to ensure that we don’t have another lift of. The line becomes completely stiff.

I get a second to think and recognize what is happening before the water explodes and the fish starts to move downstream. The reel is screaming and the line is grinding against the water surface as the fish in a bow-motion swims over to the other side of the river.

As the salmon come and pass the river-mouth passed Elleholm they meet a couple of large famous stones.

How these stones got their names I don’t know, but counted from the south the first one is ”Tranan” in pool 16. It is usually known as the first natural stop.

About fifty meters upstream, on the border to pool 15, you find the two ”Nissarna” and about another hundred meters north you will find the Ox. At the Ox is where I stand in that moment, with a bent rod and a crazy salmon on the other side of the line. An endless amount of trout and salmon has swum around there above mentioned rocks, breaking lines and regaining their freedom. Obviously this is where they love the run, and this one was no expectation.

Strait towards the Ox. In the last second I put enough pressure on the fish to barely pass the rock. The fish calms a bit. Starts to twist and turn as it takes a lap trough the deeper part of the pool. Full speed once again, some spectacular performances above the surface so that the water was exploding all over the pool. What a fighter!

After all the acrobatics the fish decided to return to the sea. A hundred-meter- run, passed Nissarna and heading for Tranan. My reel almost over runs, screams and then suddenly goes quiet. It does not work anymore! This is not happening! I get to hook on of the first salmons of the season and my bloody reel breaks! Using my hand as a break will have to work for now. But now the problems con on after the other. I feel the salmon slow down slower, slower and the a sudden stop. Shit! I thought to myself… The line is stuck in the outer of Nissarna and I can’t follow it downstream, can’t pass the boat bay. The fight is lost and I can here myself sigh deeply. My friend on the other hand has a different opinion. He takes if his clothes and in just his underwear, swims out and releases the line. Best of all, the salmon is still there.

Slowly but surely I gain meter after meter back on to my reel. My knees shake out of nervousness as the thought rush through my head; Is the hook grip still good? Did the trace get damaged against the rocks?

Has the salmon enough power to make another run and how will I handle that with my broken reel? But as I get it in it is completely exhausted and easily turns its side. We finally landed that magnificent fish on the green, green grass.

It weight in a 9.3 kilo. That was the third one of the year. And the reel? Well it went to recycling.

After rain comes fish Successful salmon and trout fishing is all about gathering experience and knowledge. And quite some luck. Sometimes you put in hard work for days and weeks without payoff. But it happens that a guy for the first time fishing in Mörrum River catches fish even though all the conditions are wrong. In the middle of a heat-bender, frying sunlight and low water a Danish tourist caught a ten kilo trout in pool 1. It can be that easy! Sometimes its weather, rainfall or water pressure that can make the difference between success and fiasco.

When I look back at my fishing journals I can clearly see that the main factor for successful fishing is a rise in the water. At a couple of days during the year, intensive rainfall help raise the water in Mörrum. Which has given several fantastic fishing days. The storm that came over Sweden in July 1987 after which we picked the fruit all of August and September that year.

Rain and high water in 2004 made almost all spawn- fish in the Pukavik –bay area find their way in to Mörrum.

Same thing happened in 2007, both times we got a summers fishing we will not ever forget.

But most famous is probably the weekend at the end of June 1991, when there were a hundred registered salmon after a water pressure rise from ten to forty cubic meters a second!

In the fall of 1994 the water pressure was about 10 cubic and the trout fishing had been unsuccessful for me. Not even a nibble. After a couple rainy days in the middle of September the water finally started to slowly raise, me and a buddy of mine when down to pool 15. The weather this evening is truly awful. Rain is pouring down and a storm is coming in from the south. Not really dreamy conditions. It’s hardly possible to cast in the wind, but there are fish playing around, so it not hard to continue with the knowledge that the fish is right there.

After a couple of hours we are soaking wet and decide to go home. One last cast, I said. Just at that moment it suddenly did not blow at all. I cast and the line stretches out perfectly. The fly lands in the dark water and begins its decent towards the hot spot rocks. A fish grabs the fly in an rock hard strike and immediately breaks the surface. Typical trout behavior, my rod bents nicely and I can feel that I have hooked in to a nice fish. There was not that much drama and after a while we safely land a male trout weighing in at 9.7 kg.

The storm continues the next day as well and by this time the water pressure is up to 20 cubic meters a second. I get home from work, put on my fishing gear and waded faster than ever. I check out pool 1 but there are already some anglers there and I did not want to stand in line and wait. I drive on to pool 7 and there seems to be room. Here in the open field the rain and

rain whipped me harder than it did yesterday. I check my box for a fitting fly and find an 89:er from the past Spring tied on a plastic tube. This should work with a sinking trace.

Thanks to all the particles and dirt that the rain brought with back in to the river, the water is now murky and that make the trout much less careful. I walk out to the reeds and put a cast downstream. For every cast I pull out another meter of line, until I had fished myself down towards pool 8. Suddenly I get a bite that feels way down in my toes. At first I thought that a salmon had taken my fly, but I soon realized that it was a big sea trout. I put pressure on the fish and it starts to come towards me then suddenly hits the surface so hard that water splashes like a fountain across the river. It is always critical when the fish does that on shot line. A lot of times this is when the hook looses its grip. In this case it seems to be hooked good.

This fish is strong, it does not make any long runs. Rather just stands in the middle of the river pressing against the stream. I get up on the high bank to get another angel on the fish, but the result was not what I expected. The fish goes up to the surface, shaking is whole body and rolling and does not stop. It continues over the neck an in to pool 8. Not good at all, now I have to get passed some trees and that’s not easy when you are alone. But in the end I succeed and with a firm grip on the gill I can land a 9.5 kilo male-trout. Within two days I have landed the two biggest trout of my life. The next coming days I got to hook a couple of more trout between 5 - 6 kilos. What an amazing fishing we had thanks to the rain.

The man with the black coat Trough out the years along Mörrum River I have met a lot of nice people. Some of these are legends and are no longer with us, but their memory and all they have taught us lives on forever. Some of these meetings have developed in to lifelong friendships other a brief conversation.

This wonderful evening I pack a couple of beers in my backpack, take my fly rod and peddle down to pool 4.

There is a dance in the local park and one could hear every tone the band was playing.

I sit down and cast a glans over the river. There are some fish in motion so there is a good chance that I will strike gold, although it is still pretty early. I fish trough the pool and enjoy myself by retrieving the fly to the beat of the music. Not a reaction from the fish, if there was a punk-rock band on the stage I would be netting salmon by now! One or two couples that are taking a break from dancing are walking along the bank. Otherwise there is no one to be seen. The beer in the backpack is by now more tempting than the fishing itself. So I lay down on

the grass besides the wall, pach some loose-snuff and open up.

This is life at its best! I dose of a bit…

- Are you sleeping? A dark voice asked me in a north-accent.

When I look up I see a strange man in an oversized black coat.

- May I join you?

I hesitate a little, but say yes. He is not from the dance by the look of it and neither an angler.

His face is weathered out and wrinkly covered in a dark beard.

You can sense the smell of tobacco as his sits down to join me. His eyes sparkle, he looks tricky, kind of reminds me of some fairytale character that one reads about as a child.

- It is beautiful this Mörrum River, he exclaims as he sweeps his hand over towards the river.

- Very much so, I say. Would you like a brewski?

- I got my own, said the man. And took out half a bottle of vodka out of his bag.

We cheered, he lit his pipe and we started to chat. After his visit to Österlen, on his way home to Norrland, he had just got off the train which stops only a hundred meter or so from the river. But why a detour around Mörrum? He had read Hans Lidman’s book “Salmon in Mörrum” several times. He wanted to see if the tales in the book still matched up with the reality. A room was booked in Walhalla hotel to get a sincere experience of Mörrum´s history.

- The book was written in the sixties, I say, it is not the same today. He did not have any fishing gear and claimed that he did not like to fish.

- The history is interesting, not the fishing itself. The fishing part of his family was his father, whom was a local fly-tier known as the King of Grayling in Norrland.

- Your just sitting here talking, are you not going to fish?

- Already tried, they don’t want to bite.

- I have something you should try, says the man and gets a tricky look in his eye.

The pockets get emptied out. Tobacco, pipe-cleaners, matches, some moist snuff, a train ticket, a shoestring, a gemmed knife with a deer horn handle and a lot of other crap. Finally he finds what he seeks. A small plastic box containing a small black fly with touches of blue in the tail, tied on a size 12 trout hook.

- This one works well in our rivers.

Honestly, it does not look like much. But not wanting to disappoint my new found friend, I tie it on and take a cast or two. The fly is so small that can hardly see it in the murky water. I take out another couple meters of line and cast again. Then it strikes. The water raises and not one but two back appear in the surface. Chases the fly down just to turn in the last second. A couple of more casts and another follower that does not want to take the fly.

-They are apparently interested in my father’s fly here in Mörrum to.

I don’t get to answer before a small salmon takes the fly in an aggressive strike. I play it for another thirty seconds or so until it loses the hook-hold. This is almost too good to be true. I have not caught a fish but I could not care less, something at least happened. One would think that the fly could be spellbound. Is it a magician that I have befriended?

- Is it not like in Lidman´s book, ha says and smiles.

- Come lets go to the pear tree, I say.

I cast quite high above the rocks and slowly, in a careful nymph-kind of way, retrieve the fly. Another bite and this time it is a bigger salmon that has taken the fly. It rushes downstream and makes a jump and it lost. Why don’t they get hooked? Probably cause the hook is so small and not made for salmon fishing. We sit down on the bench and talk for a while. Dusk is coming on. Should I change to a bigger fly now that the light is disappearing? No not today, not when the magician is here.

We see a fish carefully rising to the surface, right above the inner rock. I hurry to put out my fly about a meter from where the fish had shown itself. Let the fly go towards land as I mend the line and let it drift. Then it strikes, I can feel it is a trout straight away. It splashes in the surface and heads for the falloff but turns just before the rocks and soon enough I have it at my feet. It is in the three-kilo class a golden- brown beauty. I get out in to the water, just as I am about to grab his tailfin the hook hold releases and the fish regains its freedom. I swear a couple of harsh words as I turn back towards land. The magician is not there anymore, where did he go? Weird dude, that guy!

He disappeared just as suddenly as he appeared.

Did not even say goodbye. I fish for a while longer, casting towards the wall. It is dark now, and the dance floor in the park is silent. Jag reel in and start to peddle my way home, but I can’t help but to stop at the hotel. I sneak up the stairs and try to look through the window in to the entry. In there on the walls are all the pictures of Olle Törnblom, Rolf Vilhelmson and other legends from passed times.

Is there a shadow of a dark man in there or is it all just an amazing dream?

Per Persson One Walpurgis night the 30:th of April 1984 he fished Mörrum River for the first time. This would not be the last contact that he had with this river.

Per Persson, today living in Malmö owns The Mörrum River lodge in the old smokehouse by pool 17.

There are a lot of banging and smashing noises coming from the old brick building, a building that the locals know as the old smokehouse. Now a days a fishing lodge, maybe Sweden´s only real fishing-lodge. Construction workers are running in and out, they are building a set of stairs down from the entry floor. A large conference room and a party-area are also in the works. There are just weeks left to this seasons premiere here in Mörrum, so I get that they got their plate full. It seems that I am here before Per Persson, the owner of this magnificent lodge, whom I have the pleasure to meet today. The he suddenly comes, walking uphill toward me and the lodge.

After a firm handshake and some well exchanged works we enter the building. As Per is talking to the workers that are isolating the floors one floor down I sneak my way in to the restaurant that is yet to open for the season. The rustics and the old brick walls are kept form the good old-days. Large windows fill the room with a marbles light and I can hear the water singing its mighty melody outside as it bashes against the rocks. A huge balcony hangs over pool 17, here I stand in hopes of seeing a shimmering spring trout jump in the beautiful current. Per comes back and hands me a cup of coffee, - Milk, sugar?

- No, thanks! Black will do fine. I answered. We are both resting against the rail of the balcony and although the current is quite strong we think that we see a fish in the middle of the pool. This might have been some wishful thinking.

- You should have seen the pool from here this last summer. The water was clearer with less pressure. He said. It was like staring down in to an aquarium as the

sunlight hit the water, it was that clear. We were pointing out fish to the anglers swinging their rods below.

None of them got the fish to bite though. I guess that’s one of the charms of Salmon and trout fishing.

We sit down at one of the tables. As naturally as it comes the conversation goes straight to fishing and I have to remind myself of the interview that I am here to conduct.

- I noticed that you came by foot, do you live close by?

- No, I came from the train station. I live in Malmö and travel here three to four times a week, he says.

But you were brought up here? I quickly said to his answer.

- Nope, born and raised in Malmö, he quickly replies.

Now im even more curious as to why he would open a lodge in Mörrum, but I keep the question to myself and start it off from the beginning.

- Okey, let’s take it from the beginning, I repeat referring to myself. Your first meeting with Mörrum?

- I remember it quite well actually, even though I was 5 years of age. My father brought me here. He grew up in Vittsjö and did a lot of fishing here in Mörrum, especially with his old friend Kenneth Boström, the rod builder. It was Walpurgis night the 30:th of April 1984 that I fished here for the first time. I caught a small trout just under the minimum on my light spin rod. So you could say that I have a 30 year anniversary this year, Per says laughing.

- So you have been sold on fishing ever since? I continue.

- I think I was too little to really appreciate the experience at that time. I got my first fly rod six year after that. I remember it well. Per says and continues. It was

“We came here almost every Friday, and spent the weekend camping by pool 8” Christmas eve at grandma and grandpa house in Vittsjö. Dad had built me a 15fot rod, a very nice rod that I use until this day. With it a Young-reel that weight at least two pounds. I remember that I forces dad to join me to the jetty so that I could give the rod a try. I did a lot of practice, mostly on our lawn if not in Mörrum. We were here at least four or five times a month, he tells me with a smile. I did a lot of fishing when I was younger especially in high school, he continues. I infected my friend Niklas Halen and during our school years we spent a lot of time along the river. We came here almost every Friday, and spent the weekend camping by pool 8. Most times all the way through out Monday, instead of being in school, he sais laughing.

- Skipping school is nothing that you had problems with later on? As far as I know you have had a quite impressive career. I have heard that you have been working a lot in foreign countries, could you tell me a bit about that?

- Yes, I have worked in different countries for several years. After I finished high school I moved to France to study literature and French.

Then I studied engineering in Gothenburg, but was not satisfied by the school and moved to Lunds University shortly after. At this time in my life there wasn’t a lot of fishing. I brought my fly rod with me to France even though I did not find a suitable river to fish in. During my time at the university me and a friend started a small fishing tour agency, fly fishing in Mexico. It went quite good, actually. The plan was to finance out own trips to these exotic countries. But it went a lot better than that. I hold saltwater fishing very close to my heart. Bonefish, tarpon and permit are some of my favorites. The permit is very shy and a hard fish to catch, which makes it a pretty fun challenge. Tarpon is almost too scary to fish. You are not that cool when you have a 150 pound fish, trying everything in its power to get away, on the other end of your line. At the same trying to remain in the boat and not fall in to the water.

Per continues to talk and answer my questions about his past work and life.

When he after Madrid moved back to Sweden Per started Easyticket.com, which is a network service where you easily book your airline seat at great prices. During his time in Stockholm he didn’t fish much at all.

He did a couple of trips to Mörrum and a couple to the warmer climates.

He did not get to find another river in Sweden like Mörrum. Mörrum is without doubt the greatest and most gorgeous salmon and trout river we have here, according to Per. - Was it after Stockholm that you moved to Malmö? I asked. No, 2007 I started to worked for the Swedish Trade council in Brazil. Where I later on got promoted to manager over the Brazilian office.

It went very well for me there. I was the one responsible for the JAS-deal, when Brazil wanted to buy Gripen Fighter planes from swedish SAAB. But the deal got done a year after I quit.

Per continues. - I took a two month vacation in June and July 2012.That summer I at least fished 20 days in Mörrum River.

I have always had a dream of having my own fishing lodge. A have lived in several fishing lodges in the Caribbean, I think if fantastic. All the anglers under one roof, you all meet up at the bar or share an evening meal after a days fishing. Everyone with the same interests, that’s we are here.

I have never heard of a fishing lodge in Sweden and I find that rather strange. One day in July when I was fishing in pool 17 I saw the broker’s for-sale sign on the old smokehouse. This could not be better I thought. I waded back and called the broker, met up with him and went in to the building. I got kind of stunned when I realized how much work

there was to be. I told the broker I would get back to him. Then I thought for a long time, but at the same time not. I could not let go of that idea.

In the end of June I called my good friend Abelardo Gonzales who is an architect and we went back to the smoke house. He was all excited, this building was apparently all architects wet dream, per said laughing. I decided then that this was going to be a fishing lodge, more correct Mörrum River Lodge.

In the end of July we started to draw the plans for the how the lodge would become.

After my vacation I was back in Brazil but felt that after five years with the export council I had reached my goals there. When I took over the office was in bad shape, there were six employees. When I quit we were twelve and an profiting office. I missed the Swedish summer and Mörrum River and at the

The lodge also has a restaurant that holds 50 seats called Ullsocken, named after Mörrum´s signature fly. Also inside is a pub and a fishing library with some couches and whiskey.

Enough room for fly- tying, a large movie area and one large room for conferences and other gatherings.

When I say goodbye to Per I feel that it is not the last time that I visit this building. I am impressed by his life´s story, courage and productiveness. A man with a lot of good work ethic, strong love for fishing and for The Mörrum River. He loves is enough to do his best to make sure that ever angler that come should get the most of his fishing experience in Mörrum. In my car on my way home, I really like the thought of it being used in this way. In the old-days they smoked trout and salmon here. Today anglers enjoy themselves in here after a hard days sports-fishing. Hopefully they have caught a fish, treated it well and released it back to its home. Then tell all the buddies over whiskey as they show the pictures.

same time I think you should quit when you are on top. In November that year I quit and moved back to Sweden, my home town Malmö. I started to build the lodge straight away. It has taken a long time to get to where we are today. We are in the finishing stages of all the hotel rooms, conference- and party halls.

I suddenly get reminded of the workers sweating it out downstairs. All the noise had disappeared as I was listening to Per´s interesting stories. Mörrum River Lodge is complete in the near future according to Per. Then the building will have 18 hotel rooms named after famous Mörrum-flies. 15 of them have a view over pool 17, two of which have their own balcony.

Vi vill ha dig.

Och din syrra. Din mamma. Din granne. Och kanske din kompis. För tillsammans kan vi göra världen bättre.

Vi kan se till så att det fortfarande går att bada i en fin insjö. Att du kan ta en promenad i skogen.

Eller kanske bara plocka lite friska blåbär.

Vi kan se till att bin inte dör ut på grund av farliga bekämpningsmedel. Vi kan se till att det finns fisk kvar i haven. Vi kan minska koldioxidutsläppen. Och vi kan se till att flera hundra år gamla

naturskogar inte huggs ned på bara några dagar.

Och ju fler vi blir desto större skillnad kan vi göra. Då kan vi få politiker att förstå att det är dags för en förändring. Vi kan säga ifrån och visa på konkreta lösningar. Vi kan sätta press på företag. Och vi kan göra det lättare för dig att välja rätt i butiken.
