FR A ME OM SS OU AGE RC EO

Welcome to FitEx 2019, or as I like to call it ‘the conversation starter for the multitude of opportunities for our industry’.

exercise professionals some of the best in the world, but we have infrastructure by way of facilities and access to places to exercise that can provide the space(s) for this to happen.

FitEx is now in its 15th year and its development and progression has very much mirrored the development of the exercise industry. While conditioning and body transformation are still part of what our industry offers, it’s no longer the dominant theme. Everything from mindfulness through to exercise as medicine are growing in both sessions on our schedule, as well as being an integrated part of what our industry is offering to the NZ public.

So, FitEx is very much about pulling together all the elements that we collectively need to make this happen. Not only all the different sessions for exercise modalities, layered together with genetics, hormones and energy systems, but we include the ‘business of fitness’ as well as the science - so what you choose to deliver is both sustainable for you as much as it is delivering on what your clients need.

We are now 13th worst, in the world, for inactivity levels (as measured by the NZ government, and reported to the World Health Organisation). While on one level this is a crisis, this also provides a massive opportunity for us to be part of the solution - we should and can make a significant impact on what is now recognised by the WHO as a pandemic globally. Not only are New Zealand

So my challenge to you is to explore what FitEx 2019 has to offer with the lens of ‘what do I need to progress to help get (and keep) more Kiwis active. If we do this together we can look back on this as where it all started. Join us! Richard Beddie, CEO, ExerciseNZ

2019 is all about opportunity - for you, for our industry, and for us to collectively be a major part of the solution to NZ’s inactivity crisis.

WHAT IS FITEX? WHAT TO EXPECT Over a 100 sessions, held over three days, FitEx is the conference for the exercise industry in New Zealand. This event features the latest in science and business for every facet and role within the fitness industry – from facility owners, though to exercise professionals (Personal Trainers, Group Exercise Instructors). FitEx is the best and biggest opportunity in New Zealand to get truly world class education, on a whole range of topics relevant to our industry, jam packed into three days. Guaranteed to be educational, inspiring and above

What’s your story? By Derek Barton How many times have we looked at someone inquisitively and wondered, “What’s his story?” Other times it’s, “What’s he smoking?” Truth is, we all have a story. If we tell our story right, it could inspire people and open many doors. Told wrong, it could turn people off and even become a deal breaker. Great marketers have the ability to tell an inspirational and powerful story about a product or service so that people become interested and want to buy that product or service. Whether you are a gym owner, manager, personal trainer, group fitness or yoga instructor, learning how to tell your story effectively will lead you to great success!

About Derek Barton Derek is known as “The Brand Man,” with over 34 years of building brands. From 1985 to 2005 he was the head of Marketing at Gold’s Gym International, helping to build Gold’s Gym into one of the most respected and recognized brands in the fitness industry and become the largest international co-ed gym chain with 600 locations in 43 states and 27 countries. During his tenure, Gold’s Gym received numerous awards and accolades for its innovative marketing, with many ads being reprinted in advertising and educational textbooks. In 2005, marking his 20th year of building and protecting an American icon, Derek and Gold’s Gym were featured in America’s Greatest Brands book. Derek is a much sought-after public speaker on marketing, advertising, branding and customer service. In addition to consulting and speaking around the world, Derek is widely published in periodicals for his marketing and branding expertise.

GETTING THERE Getting to Auckland Airlines/Airfares Out of town and need to get to Auckland? We suggest you book your airfares as early as possible to secure the cheapest rate. Try looking online and shopping around with the best deals.

Getting to the Venue Shuttles from the airport: Shuttles operate 24 hours a day. They have a range of prices and are often cheaper when sharing with others. This is a great option if you are coming as a group. Supershuttle: 0800 748 885 | www.supershuttle.co.nz Public Transport: There is a new bus service that goes from the airport to right next to the AUT campus for $24. You can find information and book at skybus.co.nz Taxis: We do not suggest using taxis. The fare can be over $200 depending on traffic so would strongly advise against this option. Parking: Parking is available onsite. Information on parking will be sent to attendees before the event.

BUSINESS SUMMIT Fitness Connection by Meghan Jarvis Whether you like or not the future of the fitness industry will be connected in convenience, geo location, efficiency, and style. Everyone will be connected just like Uber. The first thing is to take a step back from the current model and allow yourself to see the big picture. Analyze how big the impact of future technology has on the fitness industry. From new booking systems that can be digitalized and scanned through our phones as well as access to studios. We are able to measure, track and monitor our bodies’ blood oxygen and heart rate while training in an altitude room. All of these things were only available to the elite such as at the Australian Institute of Sport are now offered to everyday people. It’s not a coincidence that the fastest growing studio chains utilize some of the best client tracking technology in the world. They are able to prove the results to their clients during and after training sessions. Connection is going to become vital within our industry. I believe allied health professionals will connect more with the health and fitness community. A blending of technology, mindset, fitness, and business will begin to emerge and we are on the forefront of this emergence.

PRE CONFERENCE EVENTS

FRIDAY 22 NOVEMBER 2019 9am – 4:30pm

Purposeful Performance – A Mentoring Workshop Angela Jenkins Angela has packaged the best of her yearly mentoring program into this day workshop. Learn some of the secrets to success of some of the worlds best trainers Angela has worked with. If it is time for you to uncover your genius, connect to your purpose, step up and share your gifts with the world then this workshop is for you. As trainers and health professionals we are in a privileged position to positively impact the lives of so many people. I see so many who are doing great things but have yet to realise their potential and what they are truly capable of. But boy when they do, its exciting! This program is ideally suited to people with a growth mindset who are passionate about making a difference. It is for those wanting to live a purposeful life personally and professionally. IN THIS WORKSHOP WE WILL • Uncover your natural genius (strengths) and Ikigai (reason for being) • ‘Best You’ Management – You are centre to everything. • Health – Strategies to Optimise your health • Review Your Business – are you working to your strengths? • What’s Possible?- Think Outside the Box • Business Brainstorm Session – leave with an action plan to implement in your business • Accountability Tools

change. The use of an interactive, empathic listening style increases motivation and confidence, and allows clients to safely explore the discrepancy between personal goals and current health behaviours (a powerful way to develop long lasting intrinsic motivation). In this interactive workshop we will first explore what MI is, and, how it works, before examining the elements that are of particular relevance to fitness professionals. Part of this discussion will be around the practical use of MI within typical environments, e.g. how to use MI when the focus regularly shifts between conversation/ exercise execution/conversation etc. From here we will explore several motivational techniques which will be examined and applied to real situations and scenarios that occur within the industry. Participants will be encouraged to identify some of the more common motivational problems they face day to day, and will get an opportunity to practice the skills and techniques learnt to achieve better outcomes for clients. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Acquire a working knowledge of what MI is, and, how it can boost your client’s motivation to make health related changes • Understand the fundamentals of how to recognise, enhance and elicit change talk • Learn about several key MI strategies and techniques that you can use with clients to enhance change talk and boost motivation • Demonstrate an ability to effectively respond to, and reframe negative or self-defeating client talk (sustain talk) • Identify how to pre-empt and plan for the common motivational pitfalls experienced by clients CPD points: 4.5 CPD points

9am – 4:30pm

Motivational Interviewing (MI) for fitness professionals Matthew Williams If you asked a group of 100 exercise hopefuls to explain the term, ‘motivation to exercise’, I’m sure most of them would explain it pretty well. However if you asked the same group to actually motivate themselves to exercise, the outcome would be much different. So why is it, that even though the whole group wanted to exercise, only a minority would manage to start and stick with it? While the answer to this and other similar questions are complex, one thing we do know, is that Motivational Interviewing (MI) is one method fitness professionals can use to help clients bridge the gap between knowing and doing. Far from the typical motivational approach where the professional does all of the work, MI aims to return responsibility to the client by enhancing self-efficacy and personal control for behaviour

You know it too… You probably see “Trainers” that aren’t half the Trainer you are BUT they have more clients than you and are more successful than you… Just because they know a few tricks on social media… You could sit back and rubbish them… But to be honest you’d be just like the out of shape client who doesn’t do anything to get in shape and then bags out everyone else who is actually trying… OR you could do something about it… This workshop contains the Social Media basics that every Fitness Professional NEEDS if they want to stay in the industry! It’s designed specifically for the Personal Trainer who wants to be able to compete without having doing a Degree in Marketing… Or without having to become a computer scientist… or without having to waste of hours of their time fiddling with on there with no return… LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of this session participants will be able to • •

We will then explore tools that we can apply to correct identified lifestyle factors - from movement and nutrition all the way to social and daily operating rhythms. This will be fun and interactive with many tools you can apply straight away to your own life and your clients. PRE CONFERENCE EVENTS

FRIDAY 22 NOVEMBER 2019 9:30am – 4:30 pm

It’s about human beings not human bodies John Polley (JP) Here’s another full day workshop from Fitex favourite JP, with thought provoking content, enjoyable practical engagement and strategies you can instantly apply in your business, and your life, the very next day. JP wants to share some stunning information about the effects of exercise on the brain and emotions, but equally how our mental or emotional worlds influence our physical outcomes. “We are one system...” says JP, “not lots of separate systems”. Brain influences body, emotions influence everything and what’s happening in our bodies influence the other two”. Given this fact, having an understanding of what JP calls the 3 human dimensions is incredibly useful. However, the outcome JP passionately wants for all attendees, is to actively engage and coach the whole human. Create positive change mentally, emotionally and physically. Create movement sessions that may be geared towards everything that is familiar to you (strength, cardio, mobility, play), but that tick all boxes of the human being. As the saying goes, you can’t have motion, without e-motion. You’ll leave with great information, but you’ll know how to apply it in your sessions AND will have practised your new skills before the day is done. Finally, we shouldn’t forget the hallmark of any JP experience: an inclusive, encouraging, friendly, supportive and fun environment that will have you inspired for the life changing work that you do. (Movement breaks will be scattered throughout the day)

9:30am – 4:30pm

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Understand the difference between training a body and coaching a human • Understand the relationship between the mental, emotional and physical systems and how they influence and interact with each other • Learn simple, practical strategies to connect with clients on all 3 human dimensions (mental, emotional, physical) • How to find your client’s why AND what might be behind it • Learn how to coach exercise to bring benefits to all 3 human dimensions, not just the physical • Have practice creating sessions geared to different populations - mobility sessions, strength sessions, cardio sessions, play sessions, for results at the levels of the human being

During this all-new course, we will delve into some of the basics of Nero Linguistic Programming to help you create rapport and be aware of subtle signals that let you know when you’re actually in ‘rapport’ with someone. We will look at just how important the language around goal setting is and how you can tweak the wording of a goal to make it more powerful. We will discover what happens at the unconscious level when information is taken in and how we and our client›s filter information, and, thus deem it safe or a threat. we will then dive into how to change the words we use and give you applicable language changes to improve client outcomes.

CPD points: 4 CPD points

The Language of Coaching Andrew Chadwick (Chaddy)

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Know how to get into and when you’re in rapport with a potential or existing client. • Improve client Goal Setting • Understand how the brain interprets information via a clients filters • Change coaching language to create better adherence • Improve client outcomes through the words we use CPD points: 4 CPD points

An introduction to Motivational Interviewing (MI) for fitness professionals If you asked a group of 100 exercise hopefuls to explain the term, ‘motivation to exercise’, I’m sure most of them would explain it pretty well. Far from the typical motivational approach where the professional does all of the work, MI aims to return responsibility to the client by enhancing self-efficacy and personal control for behaviour change. The use of an interactive, empathic listening style increases motivation and confidence, and allows clients to safely explore the discrepancy between personal goals and current health behaviours (a powerful way to develop long lasting intrinsic motivation). In this talk we will first explore what MI is, and, how it can boost your client’s motivation to make health related changes, and then learn about several key MI strategies and techniques that you can use with clients to enhance change talk. From here we will explore a selection of techniques that can be used to effectively respond to, and reframe negative or self-defeating client statements. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Acquire a working knowledge of what MI is and how it can boost your client’s motivation to make health related changes • Learn about several key MI strategies and techniques that you can use with clients to enhance change talk • Demonstrate an ability to effectively respond to, and reframe negative or self-defeating client talk

Self Employed - Self Care

Build, Strengthen and Maintain Client Motivation!

Self Employed - Self Care is an opportunity for those of you who are aiming to be, or who currently are self-employed to focus on the most important part of your business – YOU!

So, your client has made an effort to turn up to the gym and pay you for a session. Does that mean they’re motivated to change? While they could be, the answer is probably more complicated that. Motivation like many things in life fluctuates. Therefore, as fitness professionals, we too need to adjust our approach to motivating clients if we are to help them succeed over time.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Having been self-employed for the last 3 years, I have made every mistake in the book. Through my education I was fully prepared with knowledge of how to be an amazing Personal Trainer, but I didn’t prepare myself on the demands of being self-employed. • When you are your own boss, accountant, marketer, administrator etc, it is hard to find a work life balance. If you’re passionate, driven and have a strong work ethic then it’s likely you’ll end up time-poor, exhausted, over-committed, under-delivering and eventually burnt-out. • Self Employed | Self Care is an opportunity to learn 1st hand the do’s and don’ts of becoming self-employed and managing your self-care through the exciting but petrifying journey of being an entrepreneur. • The aim is for you to learn from my mistakes – rather than having to make them yourself, while also gaining insight, and ability of what you’re about to or currently facing. It’s never too early to prepare and it’s never too late to prioritise. Before you can look after your clients, you have to look after yourself – which is why I’ll be helping you gain the skills and tools to monitor, maintain and manage self-care Presenter: Shane Way

In this talk we will look at a unique model of change (the Exercise Motivation Change Cycle), which explores the many and varied motivational positions your clients will inevitably find themselves occupying. At the end of the talk there will be a Q&A session where you can problem solve your most common motivational challenges, and more importantly learn about exactly what you can do to meet them head on. In the end you will leave better equipped to help people build, strengthen and maintain their motivation to change, and ultimately get to where they want to be. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Acquire an understanding of the steps and stages people go through when making health related changes • Understand the motivational tasks required at each stage in order to move clients successfully through the change process • Implement several key strategies and techniques used to build and strengthen motivation to change Presenter: Matthew Williams

Playmobility

Get BACK To Your Best

Play has entered the exercise profession in recent years thanks to trailblazers featured regularly here at Fitex. One of these is JP, and he wants to show you another aspect to this hugely versatile exercise modality - play for mobility.

80% of adults suffer from low back pain, and many people are effected by aches and pains that prevent them from functioning optimally. A high percentage of this is caused by the muscle imbalances, instability and a lack of mobility that causes compensation in movement. Much of what our clients do in everyday life and certainly a great deal of they do in our exercise programs, requires flexibility, stability, strength and control.

In this very practical and of course, playful, session, you will play yourself to more freedom of movement. JP will show you his favourite mobility games and explain why they are creating mobility, rather than flexibility, and the difference between the two. You will leave with open minds and open bodies after this interactive and fun session. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Learn playful techniques to create physical freedom • Understand the mechanics at work in creating mobility in this way • How to be sure you are creating mobility and not flexibility and why this is important Presenter: John Polley

We love our industry. We all believe strongly that exercise is great for us. And mostly it is. Movement is a gift. Eating healthily and exercising regularly are cornerstones of the wellbeing industry. However there is an alarming rise in the number of people suffering from orthorexia (the term for a condition that includes symptoms of obsessive behaviour in pursuit of a healthy diet), compulsive over exercising and for women associated problems of amenorrhea (missing periods). Where are our responsibilities as health and fitness professionals? Suddenly the line between physical health and mental health gets a bit blurry. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • This session will be co-presented and we will both share personal experiences of where we have been negatively affected by our love of exercise. We have one b ody that needs to last us a long and well-lived lifetime and as health and fitness professionals we have a responsibility to ensure that we are helping our clients live their best, healthiest lives. • You’ll leave this session with a greater understanding of the conditions of orthorexia, extreme dieting, compulsive over exercising, restrictive eating and amenorrhea.
