One of the most valuable lessons I am learning in my life is that I don't need to do it alone. “It” can be defined as almost anything I do, including developing a new program for one of my clients, running my business, needing help repairing something and even walking my dog. What's freeing about this discovery is that it saves me time and energy. I get to a better end result because of the shared ideas, and, most importantly, I get to have great fun working with others! One of my mentors, Laura Whitworth, co-founder of The Bigger Game, always says that people are hungry to make a difference in the world; they just don't know how. We can show them how. I am finding this to be true. No matter where my clients are in their personal or professional lives, they come to me to reconnect with their vision. We lose sight of our vision when daily activities, routines, responsibilities and obligations take over. We can no longer see what drives us. We begin to feel we have no choice and are being driven instead of driving. The one important thing about having a vision is to take action to make your vision a reality. The first major step in doing this is to talk about your vision, enroll and engage others in it. By doing this, you become more committed to your vision. There is power in speaking about your vision because you’ll gain clarity and get closer to making it a reality. How scary is that? And how exhilarating? 12
As leaders, it is our responsibility to show others the “how.” In speaking about your vision, you will find others who will think you're crazy and others who will think you're not. So what? Those who think you may be crazy will help you become more convicted in your vision and those who think you're not will become great allies. I am participating in a leadership book club and our current book is "The Art of Possibility" by Benjamin Zander and Rosamund Stone Zander. Our current practice from the book is called "Being a Contribution." The practice involves inventing oneself as a "contribution," and others as well. Replace the fearful question, "Am I loved for who I am, or for what I have accomplished?" with the joyful question, "How will I be a contribution today?" Take two simple steps to answer this question: • Declare yourself to be a contribution.
• Throw yourself into life as someone who makes a difference, accepting that you may not understand how or why. Watch what happens. Enroll and engage by example. Remember, you may be the “how” to someone who has a vision and just doesn't know how to make it real. Don't be the one to cheat others out of the opportunity to make their visions a reality. Step into leading and enroll others in your vision. Don't wait. Model leadership. The world needs us to do this.
Thinking of starting your own business? It’s a huge undertaking to hang your shingle out there and offer your services and time, but it can be done. In today’s economy, more and more people want to be their own boss for various reasons. Maybe you have something to offer the world and want to impact people’s lives, or maybe you have an entrepreneurial mindset and want to get your innovative product into the hands of many. The key to starting your own successful business is to combine both your passion with how you will be of service to others. What can you offer people that others cannot? Business coach Rita Hovakimian of San Francisco based Inspiring Success, helps business owners achieve abundance and prosperity so they can reach their goals and the next level of success. “In order to have a successful business, you have to have a healthy and harmonious relationship with money and not have dysfunctional and distorted beliefs around money,” she says. Some of Rita’s advice for achieving success is to understand what your limiting beliefs are around success and making money. “Then, you're going to be able to make the transformation that you have in this arena and bring it to the success of your business and every other area of your life!”
Getting clear on your reasons for going into business for yourself will take some soul-searching and will get you on your way to focusing on a specific area of your talents and ideas. Here are some goal-setting exercises that will help you stay focused when starting your business: • Be sure every goal you create ties back to your mission and vision. This will help with long-term strategy, not just in the moment. • Make your goals descriptive. Each goal should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. • Write down a list of actions you will take to achieve your specific goals. While people in your life may advise you against starting your own business or have something negative to say about what you’re doing, you’ll need to be mature and let them fall away from your circle. Remember to listen to your intuition and take those calculated risks because you are fearless and can achieve anything your heart desires.

As a new business owner, you may not realize how important politics can be to the development, growth, visibility and opportunities provided to local businesses. Having connections in political circles and good relationships with local elected officials could be a great benefit to your business. To keep your business compliant, you need to be “in the know” with certain regulations, ordinances and fees. You won’t be able to get much done if you have zero contacts, connections and partnerships with your local officials. Everything is political and as a business owner, you should know that. If not, it’s about time you figure it out. Here are a few tips to help you start connecting with your local government officials for business support.
1. Join your local business chamber of commerce to connect with other businesses and opportunities. 2. Find out who your local elected officials are that represent the area your place of business occupies. 3. Invite local elected officials to your grand opening and have them host an event at your establishment like a ribbon-cutting or to launch a new product. 4. Schedule a meeting with local elected officials and their staff to get to know them. 5. Attend city council meetings and study the status of business politics in your city. What’s important to know? What guidelines affect your business? And, what ordinances and issues do businesses face in your city and county? Entrepreneurship is tough. Business ownership can take over your life, but getting to know the political climate in your area is a business priority. I advise you to start small or delegate local political outreach to a team member or hire a consultant to represent your business. Use these ideas to help your business become a vital community member.

Choosing Your Approach to
Yoga Practice By Esther Ekhart
Within the world of yoga, it is easy to get carried away, wanting to master the same poses your neighbor achieves so well—or just wanting to keep up with the rest of the class.
The Dream and The Reality
I personally have to keep reminding myself this is not what yoga is about. As a teacher I too feel the pressure, for example to be able to do everything with elegance and ease. Well, that is a dream. It’s not happening. Some poses are hard for me; some poses, I cannot even do. There are poses I don’t do very elegantly or the way some other yogi can do them. It’s the same thing over and over again, wanting something different than what reality presents you. In other words, suffering.
Your Practice Reflects Your Life
The way you live life is the way you most likely practice your yoga. Think about it for a moment: Are you a very determined or disciplined person? Do you get frustrated and angry very easily? Do you need to do everything perfectly? Are you usually quite hard on yourself and always push yourself, or do you never push yourself at all? Do you say you want to practice yoga but never find time, or do you make the time? It’s good to be aware of this and change your approach if you feel it should change!
You don’t want the way you live your life to influence the way you practice yoga—try for the reverse. You want the way you practice your yoga to inform the way you live your life! That’s how you take yoga with you off the mat and into your daily life. That means slowing down if you know you are a go-gogo person. Practice gentleness if you normally push. Turn up the volume a bit if you never cross any boundaries, etc. When you take a yoga class, consider this: How do you want to approach the class? You decide—and it takes a lot of awareness to be able to make a different choice than your normal pattern. But being aware and making the decision is so worthwhile because you’re creating the opportunity in your daily life to make a different choice, too! Don’t worry if you are not able to do all the poses in a yoga class. Yoga is also about knowing when to back off, and maybe even more about your attitude toward a pose then about the actual form of the pose. So lower your expectations, and enjoy learning about yourself and allowing yourself to change. Learn how to make different choices in your yoga practice, and after that in your life. 37
Sports tape is meant to help your body tissues return to homeostasis and is used to prevent injury.
A few important sports taping principles to know:
There are many different types of sports tape and taping techniques. Tapes with elastic properties are popular today, and many different brands with similar but slightly varying properties are available. Taping is meant to be used for therapeutic reasons and is not meant to boost performance. Taping can enhance the function of your body’s tissues and can affect many different tissues, including skin, fascia, circulatory/ lymphatic, muscles, ligaments, and joints.
• Don’t pull the tape as hard as you can. This can cause skin aggravation.
Sports tape can treat acute injuries to promote faster healing and reorganization of tissue back to homeostasis. Sports tape can also be used for more chronic problems. However, you should see a professional like a physical therapist if you have a chronic problem. You may need to fix the dysfunction versus relying on tape. There’s a specific method to the sports taping madness. Various techniques target specific tissue levels. As a certified taping specialist, I recommend an evaluation from your physical therapist, chiropractor or personal trainer in order to identify the specific dysfunction and to develop a plan and best taping technique. A taping professional can show you the exact taping method that is best for your injury. Taping is variable and person-specific. After you learn the right technique, you will be able to tape yourself. 38
• Less is more.
• Don’t create tension on the tape anchors or tape ends. • I generally recommend a twenty-five percent stretch on the tape. Work with a professional, so you don’t end up looking like a mummy and prevent adverse conditions from wrong taping application.
Jog with Your Dog By Laurel Mines
Jogging with your dog can be great fun for you both, but you want to be safe. The following guidelines will help you gauge if your dog is ready to go on a run with you.
Skeletal Maturity
Your dog needs to be at least one year old before they start running with you. A dog’s skeletal system isn’t mature until a year or year and a half. You’ll risk injuries such as stress fractures and ligament damage to your dog if they run with you before skeletal maturity. When your dog is a puppy, encourage them to do self-paced short sprints to prepare them for your future runs together.
Breed Type
Some dog breeds aren’t meant for long-distance steadystate running. Do some research and consult with your vet to determine if your dog is able to run safely with you.
Running Training
Your dog will need to be trained through repetition and consistency to become a good running partner. My dog is two years old now and is just now getting better at running with me. Your dog should be good on a leash if you run where dogs need to be on a leash. You want to establish dominance and train your dog to run beside you or behind you. You don’t want your dog running ahead of you.
Potty Break Routine
Establish a routine for your dog to relieve itself. I have my dog pee before we start running. Then a half-mile into the run, I have him relieve his bowels. It gives him a chance to be active and get his bowels moving. Then he doesn’t need to go for the rest of the run. If you establish a routine, you won’t be stopping all the time.
Get Your Dog in Shape
When you start running with your dog, start slow, then ramp up. Start with a one mile run for a few sessions and then slowly increase the distance. You wouldn’t go out and run ten miles if you were out of shape. Your dog has to get into shape too.
Bring Water for Both of You
Remember to take water for both you and your dog if you are going for long runs. Or find a place on your run where water is available for your dog. Have water readily available for your pet when you get back to the house.
Prevent Overheating
Consider your dog’s coat of hair and weather conditions. A dog with a lot of hair may do better exercising in the cold weather where a short-haired dog may need to wear a cloth coat. In warmer weather, be cautious of exercising a dog with a lot of hair. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including excessive panting, lack of urine, lethargy, and weak legs.
Dog Stretches
If your dog is prone to hip arthritis (breeds like Labradors), a good exercise is “sit pretty” or “beg,” where your dog sits on its hind legs vertical with its front paws up. This exercise can help keep your dog's hips strong in order to be a good strong runner and prevent hip arthritis. If you do it right, jogging with your dog can be fun and good exercise for both of you. One morning, I was going to take my dog jogging in the afternoon instead of our typical morning time, but he went to my drawer and pulled out my workout pants. He was ready to go!
