Two questions I get asked all the time ... 1.

Should I intentionally try to curve every shot (draw or fade) or try and hit it straight?

Josh Nahm Director of Instruction joshn@thenationalgolfclub.com

2. If the pin is on the side of the green, (let's say the right side) should I play my natural draw or try and fade it in? The answer to these two questions is … it depends. Now I know that isn't the definitive answer that you are looking for but let me get a little more in depth and try to explain. To answer the first question, I would say that it's dependent on your natural tendencies. If you are someone who has a fairly neutral path (let’s say less than 1° either in-to-out or out-to-in), I would play everything pretty straight. I would want you to have the ability to curve it if needed, but I would try and hit everything pretty straight. If you're someone who tends to get their path somewhere between 2.5°-4.5°, I would play that natural, curving ball flight. Anything more than around 4.5° consistently will cause too much curvature and the misses will be too big. To answer the second question — should you try and curve the ball either direction depending on where the pin is — the answer is almost always no. If you are a very high-level player who can work the ball both ways pretty easily, it can be easier and safer to get to tucked pins but in general, I would want you to play your natural shot. When you see the green complex in the picture on the top right, it's easy to assume that hitting a draw as a right-handed golfer would be the smart play and if you do play a draw, this is probably a pin that you like to see. As you can see in the second photo, a drawer of the golf ball can aim in the center of the green and let his natural shot shape bring the ball in closer to the hole.

But what if you hit a fade? This gets a little trickier with the fade, but it's still very doable. I wouldn't aim as far left when hitting the fade as I would right when I hit the draw due to the bunker. In fact, I'd aim the fade at the hole or just left, but most golfers will be much better off hitting their natural shaped shots than trying to do something they are not comfortable doing. Dear Member, I hope you are enjoying your fall season. October embodies what fall is all about with cool, crisp weather and the leaves changing to stunning autumn colors. We also start to experience frost delays during this month. We all dislike frost delays, but it is important to remember that the cool-season grasses have not completely hardened off yet for winter which means that they are still very succulent and green. Therefore, they are very susceptible to damage if they are driven or walked on. The leaves and stems freeze and can literally break from cart or foot traffic which causes the plants to turn black and can cause permanent damage. For this reason, please follow frost delay restrictions and we will do our best to get you on the course as soon as it starts to melt. This is also the month that we start our sod work in the rough areas. The areas that are of the highest priority are enter/exit areas, cart path edges and high-traffic areas around greens. We will be using sod consisting of a turf-type Tall Fescue/ Bluegrass 90/10 mix. Enjoy this beautiful month and have a Happy Halloween! Regards, Gary Sailer, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance garys@fivestarlifestyles.com

THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE Are you working from home? Taking care of children? Taking care of an elderly parent? Too busy and tired all the time? If so, then you have to de-stress and selfcare to balance your life. Adrenaline, acidic cortisol and anxiety can damage your mind and your body over time. You must decrease it with exercise, relaxation, healthy eating, leisure time, hobbies, down time, sleep and social time with friends or family. You can also schedule a massage with Jennifer by calling 816.666.7327.
