ISLAND HOPPING Board the local postal boat to island hop to Solund, Bulandet and Værlandet. Lonely Planet has named the round trip among thousands of islands, islets and skerries one of the best in Norway! Travel the postal boat route among the multitude of Solund’s islands and narrow sounds. Visit idyllic Gåsvær and take a stroll in Bulandet, where you can visit local museums, viewpoints and outdoor artworks. Experience the Nordsjøporten road with its six spectacular sea bridges between Bulandet and Værlandet. Solund’s local postal boat connects the island kingdoms of Solund and Askvoll during the summer. The postal boat travels between Hardbakke in Solund and Bulandet in Askvoll. The captain guides during the trip, pointing out many hidden treasures. When you reach Bulandet, you’ll have time to look around on your own. If you’d like more time to enjoy the scenery and explore the islands, we recommend spreading the island-hopping trip over several days. There are several places to stay in Solund, Værlandet and Bulandet; you can find an overview at en.fjordkysten.no/accomodation Island-hopping trips for groups are available all year round on request. “Island hopping lite” from Hardbakke to Gåsvær and back to Hardbakke is also available all year. Contact mail@fjordkysten.no or ring +47 57 74 30 00 for more information and bookings.

ISLAND HOPPING SUGGESTED ITINERARY FOR BULANDET The postal boat from Solund docks at Nikøy quay in Bulandet, where you’ll have time to look around independently. We recommend starting with lunch at the cafe before hiring a bike or exploring the islands on foot.
Follow the village road up from the shop and to the right. After approx. 500 m, you cross a small bridge. Continue following the road until you come to a well-signed crossroads. If you take the road to the left, you’ll come to Bulandet Ungdomshus, where you’ll find ‘Bulandet Temapark’, a local museum that provides a good introduction to life in the island community. For great views over all of Bulandet, continue past ‘Bulandet Temapark’ and follow the path up to the Halsøyhågen viewpoint. As well as stunning views, there are picnic tables, benches and a map of the islands. At Hillersøyhaugen, you’ll find busts of Berte Hillersøy and Hansine Tistel, who, together with schoolmaster Ole Rogne, rescued seven of the crew of the Tønsberg schooner Gugner in February 1885. It went down by Sengskjeret, south of Bulandet, after battling in a storm for several days. In recognition of their exploits, Berte (25) and Hansine (21) were each awarded the Norwegian Lifesaving Medal, Second Class, for Heroic Deeds. The busts were made by ceramic artist Ingun Dahlin and stand on plinths of ‘Black Beauty’ stone from Værlandet.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY FOR VÆRLANDET Værlandet Handel at the ferry quay in Værlandet offers bike hire and serves as a Visitor Point with suggested hikes and maps. From the ferry quay, it’s approximately 1.8 km to idyllic Værøyhamna and its beautiful wharfside boathouses. Værlandet Havhotell is also nearby. The North Sea Trail on Værlandet is an excellent hike on a clearly waymarked trail, and takes approx. 1 hour 30 mins. The Klettane hills are Værlandet’s most characteristic feature. A chain has been installed along the path leading to the top of Høgkletten to ensure a safe walk up to this special viewpoint at 163 m. The path turns off the North Sea Trail and is clearly signed.

KVERNSTEINSPARKEN, MILLSTONE PARK Join the stone adventure! Millstone Park in Hyllestad is an outdoor museum in the largest stone quarry landscape from the Viking period and Middle Ages in Northern Europe. We take you back to a time when there was a high level of activity in Hyllestad! In hundreds of quarries, stonecutters extracted millstone after millstone. Everyone needed millstones. Without millstones, there was no flour – and no food! Hundreds of thousands of millstones left Hyllestad and were sold across Norway, Denmark and Sweden. This was big industry, involving skilled craftsmen, expert traders and a lot of money!
At Millstone Park we take you on a tour through the stone quarries. After the tour, you can try stone carving, mill grain, bake bread, make soapstone jewellery – or relax by the fire and enjoy something to eat and drink.
OPENING TIMES 20 June – 25 August, Tuesday – Sunday 10.00 – 17.00. You can visit the park independently outside these opening times. PRICE: Adults NOK 60 / children (7–17 years) NOK 30 / Children (under 7) FREE REFRESHMENTS: We serve millstone bread, pancakes and coffee. THE COASTAL MUSEUM IN SOGN OG FJORDANE The Coastal Museum in Sogn og Fjordane is centrally located in Florø, within walking distance of the town centre, and showcases the natural and cultural history of the coast of Sogn og Fjordane. The exhibition halls provide a glimpse of daily life on the coast, the development of the town of Florø, tools used for fishing and hunting, and a large collection of local boats. The building named “Snorreankeret” houses an exhibition on Norwegian petroleum activities and Norway’s role as a global energy exporter. The museum site lies in a varied coastal landscape. A network of footpaths and bridges makes the area into an open air museum that offers activities for all ages. Here you can visit an old salting shack that still smells of the herring hung here to dry and view “The Big Herring Adventure” exhibition. Sheep and goats graze here in the summer. Vågsberget in Vågsøy municipality was one of many trading posts and inns along the coast and has roots dating back to the 17th century. The trading privilege was the economic cornerstone here, and the inn provided people travelling along the coast with a safe harbour and a place to stay overnight on their journey. Today, Vågsberget is one of the most complete and well looked-after sites of its kind in Norway. During summer, you can join a guided tour of the historic buildings, and pay a visit to the exhibition and café.

ROCK CARVINGS AUSEVIKA ROCK CARVINGS
Ausevika is one of the most extensive rock-carving sites in Norway, with figures dating back more than 3000 years. There are more than 300 carvings, of both animals and humans. There are also fertility and agricultural motifs, known as Veidemannskunst, literally ‘huntsman’s art’. Geometric symbols, spirals and labyrinths are found throughout the site. Ausevika in Flora municipality is visitor friendly, with a car park, footpaths, ramp access and infoboards.
VINGEN ROCK CARVINGS Deep in Vingepollen, a narrow fjord arm surrounded by steep mountains, is Vingen, one of Northern Europe’s largest and most distinctive rock-carving sites. More than 2200 carvings have been discovered here, probably created by neolithic hunters (approx. 6000 years ago). The deer is the most popular motif, but there are also human figures and abstract symbols. Vingen is a protected area, and access is restricted to organised visits. Dogs are not allowed.

KINN Visit the saga island of Kinn and let yourself be captivated by the island, its history and the beautiful scenery. Great walking and easy access from Florø make Kinn a popular year-round excursion. The local ferry runs between the islands and skerries from Florø to Kinn every day throughout the year. A windy walk around the island is an energising experience. You can walk up the majestic mountain Kinnaklova and get close to the local fauna. Perhaps you’ll see the eagles that live out here? When you disembark on Kinn, follow the road to the right to Kinn Church, one of the oldest stone churches in Norway. Restoration work means that the church is closed in 2019, but it is still a striking sight far out where the fjord meets the sea. The walk to the church takes approx. 30 minutes along a 1 km gravel road. From Kinn Church, you can walk towards the towering mountain cleft in two: Kinnaklova. And if you dare, you can climb it to enjoy the view. Use the same waymarked path up and down Kinnaklova, following it through the ravine. This path will take you back to the quay where the local ferry moors. The walk around the island is 4 km and takes about 2 hours. If you want to extend your visit, it’s possible to stay the night at Kinn’s old schoolhouse, now operated by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). You can borrow the key at the tourist information office in Florø.

STORM WATCHING Winters along the Fjord Coast are often mild, green and stormy, with fantastic winter light. November to February is high season for storms!
STORM-WATCHING TOURS
There is occasional cold weather with snow, but this is unusual here. In contrast, windy days are in good supply! The region is the stormiest in southern Norway, and boasts spectacular nature experiences.
Two- or three-day tours with good food, guided storm-watching experiences, transport and accommodation.
Some days are clear and sunny, but stormy weather is usually just around the corner. Seeing the waves crash against the shore from a viewpoint where the fjord meets the open sea is a fascinating sight. Due to the mild climate you can go walking year round. If you need to escape the wet and windy weather, there are local galleries and museums to visit. A comfortable stay is an important part of the experience. Light the fire, snuggle under a blanket and enjoy a hot drink with your nearest and dearest. Fish and shellfish are at their best in winter, and our restaurants offer topclass food experiences. You’ll find a high standard of hospitality everywhere you go – the abrasive coastal climate stands in strong contrast to the friendly people waiting to welcome you. The Fjord Coast offers a wealth of hiking opportunities, from a series of spectacular summit hikes to walks in easy terrain. Enjoy the views over a multitude of islands, high mountains and long, narrow fjords. Waymarked footpaths make it easy to find your way, and you can choose the level of difficulty that suits you. Coastal walking is something really special. Bracing sea air, waves crashing against the shore and mountains looming on the horizon are food for the soul. Along the Fjord Coast, you’ll find steep mountains rising straight from the sea. All around are countless islands with gently rolling terrain that’s perfect for walking. On the mainland are mountaintops offering panoramic views of fjords and glaciers, and the ocean to the west. If you prefer something less challenging, the North Sea Trails might be just what you’re looking for. This is a series of waymarked footpaths through easy terrain boasting a rich history and beautiful coastal scenery. There are a total of 17 North Sea Trails along the Fjord Coast, all clearly waymarked and provided with maps. Look for ‘N’ on the map on page 51 to find your nearest trail. Sunnivaleia is a pilgrim’s path by sea and land, extending all the way from Bergen to Kinn and Selja. You can walk the path independently or join an organised group walk; see sunnivaleia.no Tourist information offices in the region can provide tips, maps and route descriptions.

Fishing in winter is a very special experience, and there is a good chance of landing some really big fish. Did you know that shellfish are at their best in the winter? You’ll find cottages, fisherman’s shacks and boathouses, providing the perfect setting for fishing holidays. These are close to the sea, with access to good boats and facilities for preparing and storing the catch. You can also join a local fisherman for a guided fishing trip and get tips on the best places to fish. You’ll find a list of businesses offering guided fishing trips and boat hire in the back of this guide.

Visit the Gulating Millennium Site! This was Western Norway’s parliament and court from 900 – 1300. This is where the Vikings met, settled disputes, discussed politics and drew up the oldest body of laws in the Nordic region – the Gulating laws. Follow the cultural trails at the Millennium Site and in Eivindvik using an app on your phone. For groups (min. 8 persons by prior arrangement), we recommend a guided tour with our knowledgeable Viking guides, and perhaps we can tempt you to some Viking tapas for lunch? SOLDALEN PUBLIC FARM
Hjortegarden is a farm famous for its countryside management, high standards of animal welfare, culinary traditions and hunting – and adding value in all it does. The red deer – in Norwegian: hjort – is the majestic animal that presides in the forests around the farm, ruling right the way down from the fjord, up along the rivers, through the forest to the bare mountains and the mighty Ålfotbreen glacier.
Soldalen Public Farm enjoys a sheltered, sunny position on the homesteads of the farm worked by the Terøy family for seven generations. The farm is situated right by the Storåsen recreation area and is certified by both “Inn på tunet” as a provider of welfare services and the international 4H network of youth organisations. The farm has horses, hens, rabbits, miniature donkeys, cats and alpacas.
Welcome to our farm! HJORTEGARDEN offers unique natural experiences tailored to you!

SELF-DRIVE If you choose the outer route through Gulen and Hyllestad, you will get the opportunity to visit the old and charming trading centre of Skjerjehamn, the Gulating assembly site close to Eivindvik, and the Millstone Park in Hyllestad. In Solund you can join a lighthouse safari to Utvær, the westernmost lighthouse of Norway, or go island hopping with the postal boat. Make a stop at Korssund, and enjoy the 4 metres high cross, more than thousand years old! Close by you can also visit Lammetun coastal fort. In Dale you can visit Jakob Sande-tunet, and then drive over the Dalsfjordbridge to Holmedal and Askvoll. Take the ferry from Askvoll to Værlandet and explore the beautiful islands of Bulandet and Værlandet. In direction Florø, you should take a shortcut to the rock-carving site at Ausevika, close to Eikefjord. When visiting the costal town of Florø, we recommend a visit to the Coastal museum, and a boat trip to one of the many beautiful islands, like Svanøy and Kinn. In Bremanger you should pay a visit to Kalvåg and the beautiful beach of Grotlesanden. And if you are fit to a top tour, you should try the route to Hornelen – the highest sea cliff in Europe! For details, look at en.fjordkysten.no

CYCLING HOLIDAYS The Fjord Coast is perfect for cycling enthusiasts of all ages, whether in spring, summer or autumn. The area boasts quiet roads, gently rolling terrain and a multitude of islands linked by local boat and ferry routes. Bring your bicycle when you go island hopping. Enjoy cycling along idyllic roads with little traffic. It’s easy to combine a cycling holiday with other activities such as fishing, hiking, kayaking and rafting.
TIPS FOR TOURS ON TWO WHEELS: •
Solund: The gently rolling terrain makes Solund perfect for cycling. Combine a cycle tour with island hopping on the local postal boat.
•
Værlandet og Bulandet: The 5.24 km Nordsjøporten road between Værlandet and Bulandet takes you across six bridges right out where the fjord meets the open sea – perfect for cycling!
•
Askvoll: Cycle over the new Dalsfjord Bridge and along the fjord to Holmedal. Take a break at the Helle Fabrikker outlet shop before continuing on the old road along the fjord to Askvoll.
•
Hyllestad: Take a cycle tour along the Trondheim Post Road, with its beautiful stone bridges, and pay a visit to the Millstone Park.
•
Flora: Explore Florø’s small-town idyll on two wheels or take a bike trip on one of the beautiful islands in the archipelago surrounding the town.
•
Bremanger: The North Sea Trail from Villevika in Botnane is a fantastic cycle tour in a beautiful landscape. Enjoy a cycle tour from Kalvåg to Nesje in Ytre Bremanger.
•
Along the coast: If you have plenty of time, you can cycle from Gulen in the south to Bremanger in the north. Combine cycling along the Fjord Coast with Norled FJORDCard, which gives you five days’ unlimited travel on the express boats. Hop on and off the boats, and cycle the sections of your choice. norled.no

Songen ved det store djup
22. and 23. juni 2019 · 20. and 21. juni 2020
Kinnaspelet, «Songen ved det store djup», is performed each year in the mid of June, staged by the medieval church on the island of Kinn, west of Florø. Through 35 years have about 100.000 people enjoyed this historical pageant in the natural amphitheatre between the old stone church and the mighty mountain on the island. The old medieval church and the mighty nature here by the sea is part of the scenography. The adventure starts with a beautiful boat trip from Florø to Kinn. You can view the programme and read more about the pageant at www.kinnaspelet.no Kinnaspelet is produced in collaboration with Sogn and Fjordane Theatre, musicians and around 160 actors, both professional and amateur. Contact: Kinnaspelet, tel. +47 57 75 25 30 or via e-mail: kinnaspelet@gmail.com
