FLAIR REVIEW

Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir

A New Icon Located in the heart of historic Cairo “is where we belong”, is the confident assertion of Mr Ahmed Hosny, General Manager of the Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir, which is opening in January 2017 in its iconic location in downtown. Steigenberger Hotel El Tahir Cairo’s 295 rooms and suites, business, banquet and conference facilities, restaurant, spa and health club also represent “a new era of business hotels among the downtown five star hotels”, he added. The Steigenberger name carries the guarantee of excellence, especially since the rebranding under ‘Deutsche Hospitality’ which now includes Steigenberger Hotels and Resorts with Jaz in the City and InterCity Hotels - 116 properties in 12 countries on three continents with the target of expanding beyond 200 hotels by 2020. Mr. Hosny, with 25 years’ experience in

the Egyptian hospitality industry, emphasizes: “We know ‘Made in Germany’ is a strong statement and the market will expect and get perfection, efficiency and excellence down to the most minor detail. Steigenberger is a product and a brand equipped to compete at the highest level. “This is where we belong, among the big names in the heart of the city. Cairo is a large capital and important location and our presence here was inevitable as part of Steinberger’s strategy of expansion, both internationally and locally.” Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir’s Cairo strategy reflects the diverse downtown market. Mr Hosny said: “We are not restricting ourselves to a particular segment; we want to attract everybody. But it is the nature of this location that there

will be more focus on certain sections of the market - business, the GCC region, diplomatic and embassy business and of course general travelers.” Located among a clutch of five star properties, Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir brings a new dimension to downtown hospitality options. “We are a unique product and we bring to the market precisely what this locale lacks. The hospitality industry is like any other; you have to offer the client the right product at the right price and the right time in the right location. “There is the need for such a product here. I believe Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir Cairo represents the beginning of a new era in hotels.”

DECADENT Adriana Lima

Adriana is one of the hottest names in the modeling world. The Brazilian super model is famous for her gorgeous looks on and off the runway. It was her signature sensual looks that led Marc Jacobs to select her as the face of his latest fragrance, Decadence. Sexy and sophisticated, we meet the face behind the fragrance, as she takes us behind the scenes of her collaboration with Marc Jacobs and lets us in on her beauty secrets.

What does it mean to you to be the face of Marc Jacobs Decadence?

To me, Marc Jacobs means modern, cool, and glamorous with an edge. I’ve been a fan of Marc and all of his fragrances and designs for many years. It is a true honor to be the face of Decadence.

Describe how it is working with Marc …

Marc is such a creative genius that you just have to enjoy the ride when you work with him. It’s fun to let him take you outside of your comfort zone. You never know what he will come up with and you’re never surprised that he’ll always surprise you. Working on the Marc Jacobs show was also one of the biggest achievements in my careers. I am definitely a fan of his creations. He has his own vision.

What do you look for when choosing a scent? Do you prefer something floral, something sweet, or something masculine?

When selecting a fragrance, I look for something that not only makes my me enjoy the smell but also makes me feel some type of emotion like sexy and playful or sweet and angelic.

How do you apply your fragrance?

I shower myself when I apply fragrance. I like to put it in my hair on my collarbone, my legs, everywhere! My favorite place would be my belly button.

What’s your beauty routine to keep your appearance so flawless?

I believe that washing your face first thing in the morning and at night are very important. I like to use oils to moisturize my skin and then the rest depends on what I’m doing. If I’m attending an event or working, I wear more makeup and play up either the eyes with a smoky

eye or the lips with a strong red. If it’s a regular day running around after my kids and running errands, I wear lip balm and mascara.

Best beauty advice you have ever been given?

One of the best pieces of beauty advice that I have received is to try to accentuate your beauty. You shouldn’t try to hide what you feel are imperfections with layers of makeup, instead highlight what you appreciate about yourself.

What beauty products do you swear by? Lipstick and mascara.

My ultimate beauty secret would be coconut water.

Complete the sentence: To me, beauty is…. Confidence!

You’re always posting workout selfies. How do you keep fit and in shape?

Cardio. I do a lot of moves in boxing where my core is important and gets a workout. Running, burpees, push-ups, and bicycles are all part of my routine and help me maintain a defined core.

What’s your favorite beauty look?

What’s a typical day like in the life of Adriana Lima?

What is your best DIY beauty trick? (For example, avocado face mask/ coconut oil for shiny hair)

What advice can you give to anyone, male and female, who wish to be a

Bold eyes and bright red lips!

When I’m not working, I work out a lot and spend as much time with my kids as possible.

model?

Even though I am a model, I have days where I don’t feel beautiful, and those are the days when I have to give myself a pep talk and tell myself that no matter what, I have to be the best version of myself mentally and it will show physically.

What’s the most decadent thing you have ever done? I went on a date to a private island!

What makes you happy? My children!

What is your greatest life lesson? Believe in yourself and be strong. Don’t let anyone push you down.

Azza Fahmy’s

Fatma & Amina Ghali By Hind El Ramly

Ever since Azza Fahmy has launched her namesake label in the early 80s, her handmade jewellery designs have been characterized by beauty, heritage, and tradition. With steady success throughout the years, Fahmy’s fame for beautifully and meticulously designed unique pieces has spread near and far, and now her pieces can be spotted on women from all around the globe. The jewellery icon and Creative Director of her company has entrusted her two talented daughters, Fatma and Amina Ghali, to join her in her journey. Fatma Ghali serves as the Managing Director of Azza Fahmy, while Amina Ghali is the Head Designer of the brand. We caught up with the two women who have taken on the massive task of preserving the success and tradition of the Azza Fahmy brand.

AMINA GHALI Where do you draw your inspirtion?

Everywhere, and everything can be inspiring, from nature, exhibitions, sculptural pieces, lyrics is a song to rug on a floor. However our core inspiration comes from culture as we celebrate global heritage and civilizations, combining it with world trends from nature and talismans to architectural forms.

How do you manage to uphold the heritage behind your brand-all while keeping it relevant and modern for our time?

With great difficulty, it’s one of the most challenging aspects of my design job. This is why it takes us at least 18 months to finish a collection. Too many check boxes to tick off? Does it have the brand DNA? Is it relevant to the theme? Is it trendy? Will it appeal to a local and global market?

Describe a day of your life

Everyone thinks a designer’s life is very peachy, and is filled with countless beautiful moments but that’s not the reality. In order to get inspired I have to disconnect. A day in Amina’s life is all about disconnection, spending time in nature, doing extensive research, and focusing on the details that make a Azza Fahmy piece. Last but not least, sports, I’m a spinning instructor and it helps keep me regenerated and focused.

How does it feel to be recognized as one of “Britain’s Hot 100 jewellery talents“ at a relatively young age?

Super cool, I felt very gratified to be amongst so many talented jewellers and people within my field. It felt like I was amongst my tribe.

Favourite collection you designed and what makes it special for you?

a breakthrough in terms of design aesthetics and technical challenges. The collection displays expressions of the different phases that I’ve been going through in my life.

What is your favourite Azza Fahmy Jewellery piece for special occasions?

I couldn’t just pick one. My favourite piece in our latest collection would be the Nature Hoopoe Collar. It is exactly how I would imagine nature to look like if it grew on people.

What is it like working along your sister?

My sister is very insightful. Even though she is the Managing Director, she has an eye for arts. I always love to get her opinions and perceptions. We are both visionaries so we share the joys of envisioning the brand’s future.

I would definitely say the Wonders of Nature collection; it was

41

FATMA GHALI What is the biggest obstacle that faces you at your work?

I would definitely say that it is finding the right partners for our growth plans; people who have the same vision as we do.

How do you achieve a work/life balance while managing a big business such as “Azza Fahmy”?

Realizing that work is part of my life, and who I am, because it’s a family business and I grew up in it. I always have to make sure that I am not giving less in my personal life, constantly being aware of that is not an easy job, especially since I became a mother.

Why did you decide to establish “The Design Studio by Azza Fahmy”? What are the biggest goals you have put for it?

As a brand we truly believe in the potential of the design industry in Egypt and in the region. However the industry was lacking proper educational opportunities for aspiring designers. When my mother had the dream of becoming a jewellery designer 45 years ago, there weren’t any resources in Egypt that could help her achieve her dream, she had to travel abroad to expand on her education. Our strong belief in the region’s national talent and potential inspired us to launch the school, The Design Studio by Azza Fahmy, in collaboration with Alchimia, contemporary school of Florence in Italy, aiming to provide students with the knowledge they need to become international jewellery designers.

What advice would you give to young female entrepreneurs and managers?

Don’t be afraid to fail. It’s only part of the process and it’s important that young entrepreneurs consider their mistakes as learning experiences and stepping-stones towards success.

What’s your go-to Azza Fahmy piece to wear for everyday?

It changes over time. Right now, I would have to choose the key of life necklace from the MC’15 collection.

Eklego’s

Dina El Khachab By Kate Dannies

Dina El Khachab, with managing partner Hedayat Islam and the Eklego team.

Those who have spent any time living in or visiting Egypt know about its thriving design community. The influence of Egypt’s design dynamism can be seen throughout the country’s urban centres and especially in Cairo, where internationally oriented leaders in the industry bring the world of design and architecture home to Egypt. From coffee shops filled with local art to private residences featuring custom Egyptian-made furniture, these designers are leaving their mark on the Egyptian design scene in a number of ways. To discuss these trends and more we chatted with an established leader in Egypt’s design community, Dina El Khachab, principal architect and managing partner of Eklego Design.

What are your favourite design trends right now? Recently I have been really into vintage pieces and patterns that give a vintage feel, styles that have a history or a story. I love a beautifully relaxing and neutral space with a few “hero” pieces. This is not a new world trend now but it is what I am experimenting with these days.

How have approaches to design and architecture in Egypt changed since you started Eklego?

Over the last 15 years I have seen a lot of changes in design and architecture in Egypt, still not even close to enough but it’s definitely been very positive. A lot of people have begun to appreciate design and to understand the difference between a well designed and a not so well designed space with regards to how they feel about the space and the functionality of the space.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from almost anything and everything, a textured fabric, a walk in the city, a pattern, a philosophical discussion. When I go for long runs or long swims this is when I feel most able to think and create.

Have you been anywhere recently where the architecture and interiors spoke to you in some way?

I was in London a couple of months ago and as usual I was fascinated by all of the buildings and spaces; they always have new spaces coming up and each one is nicer and more exciting than the last one. The two things that stood out the most from this last trip were two exhibitions. One was the Lebanon Booth in the London Design Biennale at the Somerset House;

it was extremely alive and sensual and every square meter of the booth heightened every one of my senses and made me nostalgic making me relive experiences I had previously when visiting Lebanon; it was brilliantly simple. The other exhibit which stood out was an exhibit by the name of “You say you want a Revolution” in the V&A. The exhibit was very well curated as well as all the visuals chosen were just perfect. It was also one of these exhibitions that were able to bring you back in time and make you experience events of the past. It was extremely rich in so many ways.

tel; a couple of sales centres for up and coming developers; some very exciting restaurants and a handful of unique residences.

What projects are you currently working on?

What are you excited about for 2017?

We are currently working on a few very interesting projects; a very exciting office space in downtown Cairo; a boutique ho-

What are you planning next?

We are planning a lot! We are taking a few new and exciting interior design projects for next year that we will be announcing and tracking on social media. We will be launching design and furniture packages for key developments. We are designing our new summer collection for 2017 and we are also hoping to have our retail business online later in 2017.

I am very excited to work on all of the things I mentioned and super excited to tackle all the challenges that will come with it; and I can’t wait to be online!

WOMEN WITH FLAIR

Mix & Match’s Shahira Fahmy & Rola Hussein

With its natural fabrics, easy flowing cuts, and designs full of personality, Mix And Match have been a hit in the Egyptian market for over 35 years and counting. Dressing generations of women of all ages, sizes, and styles, we spoke with the co-founders of the successful brand that boasts products proudly made in Egypt.

What was the idea behind Mix and Match when it was launched?

Mix And Match was launched 35 years ago when there was a big need for ready to wear women’s fashion. There was a ban on importing foreign brands and there were hardly any factories in Egypt providing for that. Our concept was to provide separates where the clients mixed and matched according to their size and height. Our aim was to provide for the university girls all over Egypt and not just Cairo, like Alexandria, Tanta, Mansoura etc, with affordable clothes and all from natural noble materials rather than the synthetic fabrics that were so popular at the time.

Who is the quintessential “Maxie” woman

She is a woman with lots of character, daring, strong, curious, and independent. A woman with strong roots that keep her grounded and wings that gives her freedom to wonder and explore…

Where do you draw your inspiration? The universe and all its endless glory is what we draw our inspiration from, there is beauty in almost everything around us, such as the endless colors and exciting patterns in our surroundings. We go by the “no boundaries” rule, and that could take us anywhere!

How has the fashion scene in Egypt changed since you started Mix And Match? Did it affect your brand in any way? The world is becoming one big city now, what happens in other far away countries reaches us with a click of a button in seconds, and so Egyptian women are now up to date –fashion and style wisewith international fashion trends, whereas

before only those who were able to travel abroad got to experience this firsthand. Big international brands are now everywhere, and women are more conscious about how they dress and where from. As for Mix And Match, we have always been true to our initial vision of the brand, we wanted to create timeless, eco-friendly, beautiful and unique clothes in 100% natural cottons and linens all made in Egypt. We have struggled for sometime to work within those lines, faced some challenges, but rose back to our standards and revived the brand by sticking to the core vision once more.

What are your future plans and aspirations for Mix And Match?

Our designs are worn and liked by women from every part of the world, but only the ones living in Egypt can buy them, so our main future plan is to be able to export and make our designs approachable by as many women around the world as possible. We are working hard on the quality of our products to maintain a standard that is worthy of being exported to the world carrying the “proudly made in Egypt” label.

As two businesswomen, how do you How do you adapt international overcome challenges you face? We don’t believe in the term “impossible”! trends for the Egyptian market? We only use international trends as a broad outline for our collection, taking only what works for our image in terms of colors, style and textile. In that sense, we never follow. We create our own identity based on the knowledge and experience we have gained throughout the years. We think that a total understanding of our clients and what they like to wear and feel is a key factor to our success.

What advice would you give to young women who want to become entrepreneurs of their own?

Turn your idea into a plan, a short-term plan, then set goals and start! There is always a little risk taken in every decision we make, but it is always worth trying. You will never know what you are capable of doing unless you try. And believe us, you might even surprise yourself.

INTERVIEW

Morning Coffee with Rita Dahdah By Sarah Hassan

Fashion blogger and social media influencer Rita Dahdah who also goes by the nickname Riri Dada rose to fame due to her fashion lifestyle blog that is quite different from others. Riri’s social media presence has been on fire, juggling between blogging, attending meetings and events, photoshoots, and so much more. Whoever said that being a blogger was an easy job needs to think again. We chatted over morning coffee about the fashion stereotypes she wishes to break.

Art Direction | Ikon Photographer | Amina Zaher Jacket | Mix & Match Jewellery | Laila Wahba Glasses | Amr Saad Production | Maison Pyramide

what inspires me to wear a certain outfit. I also cover health and beauty and share my tips with my readers. I have a section of food and travel, which is something I’m very passionate about. These will all be written in a way that it’s not about me; it’s more about my reader and how they could benefit from what they’re reading.

What sets your blog apart from the others in the Arab world? I think it’s basically my personality and I put that into everything I do. Everyone has their own unique personality but in my sense maybe in the region people have to be filtered and have to very careful about what they say and what they do and how they dress and who they talk to etc. They mostly look upon themselves as say public figures or maybe kind of like a celebrity type of persona but in my case I want to maintain that entire idea that I’m a normal person, This is the approach that I have so it makes me very relatable, very real, and very confident. The tagline to my blog is The Blog Next Door. I don’t want to be a fancy perfect image of a woman that no one can relate to or made up to be worshiped. I think what makes me different is that kind of reality factor that many people lack today on social media and not just bloggers and influencers.

What is the best thing about being a blogger?

It is definitely when people tell me you positively changed my life or you helped me realize what I want to do. It’s kind of like feeling that I’m a mentor for people who need that in a world where everyone is pressuring you to not be who you are like to have fuller lips or smaller nose or longer hair and I’m kind of pushing them to love exactly who they are even if they have for example a crooked nose then they need to embrace it.

Congratulations, you are soon to Tell us more about yourself and your be married! How are the wedding blog preparations going? My current blog has recently been launched and it comes after I started blogging six years ago. But then the market trend was moving away from just writing and more towards fashion and lifestyle. I also have previous experience working as a fashion and lifestyle editor. I also studied styling in New York. So I decided to combine all this and launch the blog. Since my Instagram page has a big following especially in the region, I decided to enchance it with a blog. My blog currently covers my reflections on life, and on relationships. It’s a light philosophical way of how I look at things and people respond to it a lot. I also talk about fashion, style, tips such as how to wear new trends, how to shop my looks,

A lot of people are asking especially about the dress so the dress is a source of pressure. I also have a lot of collaborations with some nice names in the region and worldwide. So it’s an opportunity for me to provide brides-to-be and the wedding industry with a perspective of how you can recreate classics because Lebanese weddings have kind of become a cliché and have become an extravaganza. So I can show them another way of doing things where you can still be chic and still use classic elements but in different way. The dress is such a different aesthetic than what any bride has ever seen. I’m excited and I’m super worried because it’s that different and people are either going to

love it or be like what is she wearing and what is she thinking?!

Have you ever visited Egypt before this time? What do you like the most about it?

This is my third visit to Egypt. My first vacation was with my friends to Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh. It was such a big deal for me at that time because I had only traveled with my parents in the past and my parents were a bit strict. I was in college the first time I came to Egypt. It was so much fun. My friends and I were supposed to come for four days but we ended up staying for ten. I have this kind of soft spot for Egypt because it reminds me of a very innocent time in my life where everything was big and impressive. Being back here makes me super happy and makes me feel like I’m connecting more to my past. There’s something novel about it.

How do you see the fashion scene in Egypt?

It’s developing in such a fast rate. All the Egyptian designers I met till now and through Maison Pyramide have this incredible view and taste levels as designers. I fell in love with their unique aesthetic and it’s something that you don’t see anywhere else. If these designers channel their creativity with a right business sense and right direction, they can go global and show the world what the Egyptian fashion industry has to offer. I think now maybe they are having a bit more courage to show their unique identity instead of just showing what people may want to see. The Egyptian market needs more business savvy people like Maison Pyramide to kind of connect with those artists to direct them.

How important do you think is fashion in our daily lives?

It is very important. People tend to look at fashion as something very shallow. I tend to disagree because whatever job you have, the first impression anyone is going to get out of you is the way you look. You owe it to yourself to be the best version of yourself in everything you do but not in the way society wants to see you but in the way you want society to see you. Fashion will tell people who you are without you having to speak and that’s actually your sense of style than fashion. For me, it is style that is more important because fashion at the end of the day is clothes on racks. We can all get the same t-shirt but it’ll look different on each and everyone of us. So it is important to make the statement that you want.

New Year’s Fashion Resolutions What better time of the year to give a much-needed update to your fashion sense than with the start of a new year. Here is a list of new years fashion resolutions meant to revolutionize your wardrobe. Start the year fresh with these fool proof tips!

Work Out We have all done this- buy an amazing work out outfit that we think will motivate us to work out when in reality you end up wearing it on the couch while eating a bag of chips. But this failure of fashion motivation doesn’t necessarily mean that you are not in the right track. You can definitely use a fancy workout outfit to motivate you, but in a different way. Instead of investing an outfit to work out, work out for the outfit. Give yourself a certain amount of times you work out, for instance 2 weeks, and then reward yourself with the fancy fitness outfit. Not only will you feel you earned it, but you will gain the added bonus of making it a habit to work out. And if you fail, you didn’t waste any money. Another great technique that goes with this is saving a bit of money for the outfit each time you work out. This instalment reminds you what your working out for, that amazing new outfit. So this year, revolutionize your health, and shop smart, happy, and fit.

Get Organized Closets are a nightmare and a blessing. They hold all your favourite items, and that crusty old shirt you are hoarding inside it. So this new year’s stop with the hoarding with these fool proof closet cleaning tips, that will help de-clutter your life and make you feel more lightweight and organized. First, separate you clothes into two piles. Things that are new, haven’t been worn yet, or worn recently and things that have holes, are worn out or you haven’t worn in 3-6 months. Remove all the holed items that are worth being fixed Then remove the holed and worn-out items from the pile and put them in a bag to be recycled. After getting rid of those unused items, look through the pile of clothes you haven’t worn in 3-6 months and only keep maximum 20% (e.g. if you have 10 items only keep two) of those items that you know you might eventually wear again or have a sentimental attachment to. This limit will help you realize what you truly want to keep and what you are okay with discarding. This tactic cancels out the hardest part of getting rid of clothes- attachment. It helps set a priority for certain clothes, making the others less important and more easy to let go of. Finally give away the clothes you are not planning to wear. Shaking off the hoarding will give you a liberating feeling, and you are bound to feel good by the act of giving as well. Finally repack up your closet, as you desire. Extra tip, when reshuffling your closet put the clothes you didn’t wear but kept in plain view so that you remember to wear it soon.

Love Myself One mistake many people make when shopping is buying what’s trending or what looks good on the rack. The number one reason many don’t love themselves is because they try to get into clothes that flatter the mannequin, not themselves. That’s why, this New Year, make it your number one goal to find your style and what looks good on you. If something is unflattering on you, try to find something else. No one looks good in everything, and there is always one style that each person can most definitely rock. So buy what makes you look good, and not what’s trending. Experiment! Have an all-day trip to a shopping mall and find what truly fits you. We guarantee, once you start dressing for yourself and not follow the fashion herd, you will feel beautiful inside out. So this year make sure to accept yourself- complete with your flaws as well as your assets.

ATTENTION TO RETAIL

Cartier’s Mansion By Farah Amin

Simply known as the ‘Mansion’ Cartier’s Fifth Avenue historic boutique in New York recently reopened its doors after a lengthy two and a half year renovation. The iconic store that originally opened in 1917, boasts 100 years of history. The renovation was designed to emulate the historic feeling of stepping into a grand residence. French architect and designer, Thierry Despont, oversaw the four-storey landmark property. The result? A magnificent space that suits only a household name like Cartier. With a sophisticated mixture, the space is

made up of private salons and public areas that showcase Cartier’s jewellery, accessories, and timepieces collections. The rooms include the Princess Grace Salon, where the actress and style icon’s engagement ring is on display and another is a Gary Cooper Salon, which has a focus on men’s timepieces. The building gets its it’s iconic stature when back in the day, Morton F. Plant, son of railroad tycoon Henry B. Plant made a deal with Pierre Cartier to sell the Italianite mansion to the jeweller for only $100 as

For her last screen appearance in High Society, Grace Kelly wore her Cartier emerald-cut diamond engagement ring given to her by Prince Rainier.

well as a double-row strand of extremely fine and rare natural pearls then valued at $1,000,000. The pearls would be significantly worth more today, however it would only be a minuscule fraction of the present-day value of the building. To create the boutique’s opulent interior, Architect Thierry Despont has fused 35 different design styles. He used special window treatments, fabric and leather upholstery for the walls, and a variety of custom furniture. Thirty chandeliers have been reproduced from the originals that

were placed by Pierre Cartier himself, as well as 110 antique pieces acquired by Despont and the department of Cartier’s heritage. There are two entrances for the boutique, one of Fifth Avenue with a complete reconstruction of the historical glass entrance, and the other is a more private entrance via 52nd Street which leads directly to a concierge desk and the boutique’s famous theatrical, classical staircase. The second floor is home to the champagne coloured oval room named for Princess Grace of Monaco, where there is a display of Cartier’s extensive engagement ring collection. Another room is the exciting Elizabeth Taylor room, which stages the more sumptuous and colourful high jewellery creations. Both rooms have private photographs of the actresses, pieces especially commissioned for them and other memorabilia. With red leather armchairs and moulded oak finishes, a change of pace is offered with the third floor, which is dedicated to men and women’s timepieces. AVON Celebrates 130 Years of Empowering Women

Avon Cosmetics is celebrating 130 years of brand history all over the world. The anniversary follows the announcement of Avon’s new brand proposition “Beauty for a Purpose” in 2015 that focused on the company’s commitment to continue empowering Avon representatives and women around the world through beauty and financial independence.

Bookseller David H. McConnell founded Avon in 1886, 34 years before women in the U.S. had the right to vote. How fitting for a company that is decades ahead of its time in offering women an opportunity to earn their own money. Avon’s early and continued empowerment of women is what earns the company its own special place in women’s history. For 130 years, Avon has been empowering women around the world through its representative earnings opportunity. “We are not just a cosmetics company; we have a130 year’s history of empowering women. That is what we call Beauty for a Purpose. The validity of Beauty for a Purpose campaign lies in how Avon links beauty and empowering women: telling our story, inspired by our representatives’ success stories brings our vision to life,” says Mohamed Farouk, Avon Egypt & Saudi Arabia County Manager. “Beauty for a Purpose provides a framework for the company to champion three defining areas: Avon’s beauty products of demonstrable quality and value; Avon’s earning opportunity, which allows millions of women around the world to build self-reliance and a better life for themselves and their families; and the network effect of empowered women empowering others,” he continued. Avon is a company that connects more than 6 million women around the globe, with breakthrough innovations, being trendsetters in a social selling platform globally, being the biggest philanthropic player for women’s causes at the world level, and truly creating a movement that is dedicated as mission for beyond beauty globally. They provide women economic freedom on one hand, and they continue to raise awareness through social responsibility projects and touch the lives of millions of women. Avon’s commitment to women is also reflected in the significant work they have done in breast cancer and domestic violence aiming at helping women live healthy lives, free of violence. “In addition to being a passionate advocate for women’s economic advancement, Avon is equally committed to supporting the causes that impact women. Avon worldwide has donated nearly one billion dollars for initiatives directed towards ending both breast cancer and domestic violence,” added Barbara Castioni, Head of Marketing & Sales Support Avon Egypt. In November 2016, Avon launched Avon True, its new cosmetics line for fans of natural, simple and sophisticated makeup. Avon True reinvents the basics, offering women affordable products so a woman never has to miss her delightful makeup.

Mansour Holding Company The Mansour Holding Company for Financial Investments was created in 1992, building on the Mansour family’s experience in industry going back to the 1950’s. They make up one of the largest family owned businesses in Egypt, and they employ over 10,000 people. The company’s consolidated revenues are four Billion U.S. Dollars; and they boast a diverse product portfolio that includes manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of Imperial Tobacco brands, as well as a variety of their own-label products of tuna, dairy, and bottled water. They have also launched a frozen food division, starting with their Sunshine shrimp and fish fillets products. In total, the Mansour Holding Company have 23 distribution centers across the country with a combined capacity for over 70,000 square meters, and they rely on these to best serve their nationwide distribution network which covers the vast majority of governorates in Egypt. In 2016 the Mansour Group, in line with its participation in the national efforts to ration power consumption and, in cooperation with the United Nations Development

Program (UNDP) and the Power Efficiency Improvement Project implemented by the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy started preparing a study on techniques to reduce power consumption in the Mansour Group factories and Metro Market, Kheir Zaman and Mini Metro stores, warehouses, and administration headquarters. A theoretical study was conducted to ration consumption using LED technology instead of the thermal bulbs. Such study was adopted in two of Metro and Kheir Zaman stores. The outcomes of the study and the practical experiments concluded that converting from traditional lighting systems to LED technology reduces and saves consumption at 30% to 35% of total electricity consumption and improves the ambient atmosphere due to the reduction of thermal emission rates which consequently improves the efficiency of using the freezers, air-conditioners, and refrigerators. Accordingly, fuel consumption and regular maintenance decreased and a healthy atmosphere is ensured for the shoppers visiting the stores. Based on these results and upon assessing them scientifically and practically, the

Mansour Group adopted a large scale project which was launched on November 1st, 2016 to convert from the traditional lighting systems to LED technology in all establishments including 100 stores of Metro, Kheir Zaman, Mini Metro, and Fresh Food in addition to the administration headquarters in Cairo, Alexandria, and governorates, as well as 24 Mansour warehouses countrywide. Through this pilot experiment, Mansour Group presents a practical real model to invite the companies and establishments operating in Egypt and even the citizens to adopt modern lighting systems which have many financial, environmental, and health benefits. Mansour Group’s efforts in this regard come in light of its attention to the national matters in relation to the national directions to ration power consumption and improve levels of efficient use being a major national objective especially under the increasing need for more power resources to achieve the sustainable development plans of Egypt.

Get Ready!

10 Things to Look Forward to in 2017 By Kate Dannies

While 2016 trends were all about flaunting excess, as exemplified in fashion trends such as heavily bejewelled cocktail dresses and over-the-top artistic releases such as Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade, 2017 is all about contemporary elegance with a twist. From the release of the new BMW coup to luxury residences in Dubai, these are the top ten things we are looking forward to in the New Year.

Ralph Lauren Tells All World-renowned fashion designer Ralph Lauren is scheduled to release his memoir in Fall 2017, just in time for the 50th anniversary of his legendary fashion label. Now 76, Laruen was born into an immigrant household in New York City before ascending the fashion ranks. Now one of the richest men in the world, Lauren recently resigned as chief executive of his brand in 2015.

Still Fast Still Furious Scheduled for release in April 2017, Fast and Furious 8 is the latest installment in the wildly popular franchise. Director F. Gary Gray of critically acclaimed films such as Straight Outta Compton and The Italian Job will head the film and, despite the tragic death of star Paul Walker in 2013, rumours have it that the film will still feature Walker’s character Brian O’Conner using advanced computer-generated imagery (CGI) technology.

Iggy’s Back After a series of delays due to personal issues involving famous fiancée and basketball star Nick Young, Iggy Azalea’s highly anticipated second album Digital Distortion is set to drop in January 2017. Produced by Def Jam Recordings, the first single off the album, Azillion, was released in January 2016.

The Tate Goes Live The first-annual BMW Tate Live Exhibition transforms the concept of an art exhibition from a static presentation to an immersive experience combining installation, performance, film, video, sound, and talks over a 10-day period. Beginning March 24th, 2017, the first edition of the exhibition will feature over 15 artists with two attendance options: free installation viewing in the daytime and ticketed evening performances.

At Home with Bulgari In a partnership with Dubai-based real estate company Meraas Holding, Bulgari Hotels & Resorts is set to open the Bulgari Resorts and Residences Dubai, its fifth luxury property in Dubai, in 2017. Designed by Italian architects Antonio Citterio Particia Viel and Partners, the sweeping 1.7 mn sq ft property will feature 100 sumptuous rooms and suites, 20 privately-owned residential villas and a marina, all accompanied by a full range of amenities.

Back to the Eighties For those who have loved the recent resurgence of 80s trends, 2017 will see 80s make up and rave culture trends intensify. Big names such as Chanel and Marc Jacobs have already started to capitalise on these trends with their upcoming lines. From lipstick-bright blush to metallic eye shadow and even vibrantly coloured dreadlocks, the 80s is here to stay.

On Your Toes International heartthrob Zayn Malik has been busy since his exit from pop band One Direction. In addition to a thriving solo career, Malik recently teamed up with designer Giuseppe Zanotti to release an exciting new shoe line in 2017. The high-end collection will feature triple-digit prices tags and four styles catering exclusively to men.

At Home in 2017 When it comes to 2017 home trends, subtlety is the key. All-antique dĂŠcor, brushed metal and oversized furniture are on their way out, replaced by increasingly refined and minimalist interiors. Hot trends to look out for include matte appliances, marble countertops, jewel tones and smart home furniture featuring bonuses such as built-in charging docks.

Happy Birthday BMW BMW celebrated its 100th birthday in 2016 by rolling out a series of “Celebration Edition models, including the BME 750 Li Celebration Edition and the BMW 320d Celebration Edition and the fun continues in 2017. The German automaker recently announced it would be releasing another celebration edition model exclusively for the Japanese market in 2017, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Celebration Edition. Based on the BMW 6 Series Coupe 6401, additional features that set the model apart include special wheels, Nappa leather and black trim.

Luxury Loungewear It started with leggings and athleisue wear, then pajama dressing and slip dresses. Following the trend of increasingly casual and comfy street wear, robes are the latest must-have from the runway when it comes to dresseddown fashion. Keep an eye out for robes ranging from super laid back to evening appropriate-an evening out, that is.

Riviera

HOME

Living

On the seafront of the stunning Larvotto area of Monaco, are two apartments that the young and talented interior designers Humbert & Poyet have transformed to create one unique space. The 380 meters squared apartment has a 100 meters squared space dedicated to the balcony alone, and the design duo was happy to work with an unusually large space in that prestigious area. Much like directors, Humbert & Poyet treat spaces like stage designs, aiming to create different emotions within a single location. By reflecting their vision of the Riviera lifestyle, they aimed for the design of the home to be timeless while exuding discreet luxury. The building is straight out of the 70s, with a ceramic mosaic faรงade. This goes along perfectly with an interior inspired by the iconic images of Monaco, Palm Beach and Palm Springs by Slim Aarons. Inspired by the blending of French and Italian style that takes place on the Riviera, Humbert & Poyet wanted a mix of legendary French pieces from the 50s along with vintage Italian furniture for the home.

87

The design is one of measured sobriety, punctuated with touches of bright colour, printed wallpapers influenced by plants and breath-taking exterior views overlooking the Mediterranean. The spacious living room is filled with innovative furniture and objects, however these contemporary pieces fill the room naturally, with grace and without becoming formulaic and too precious. The result is a casually elegant look. The challenge of the project was the blending of the beautiful 20th century furniture from galleries around France with contemporary new pieces and bespoke designs, which Humbert & Poyet marvellously executed.

BOUTIQUE

California Dreaming

Casa Laguna Born in 1858 in Peoria, Illinois, Arthur Benton was an American architect and designer. After studying at the School of Art and Design in Topeka, Kansas, Benton moved west to pursue mission revival architecture, a late 19th century architectural movement that drew inspiration from the late 18th and early 19th century Spanish missions in California. Benton’s design style soon caught the eye of local innkeeper Frank Miller who envisioned the construction of a great Mission-style hotel, the Mission Inn. After existing as a hotel, artist’s colony and eventually a bed and breakfast, the property was bought in 2000 and transformed into Casa Laguna, a luxury hotel and resort in the heart of Southern California—and we couldn’t be happier! By Kate Dannies

A fortress-like enclave of historical buildings, the history of Casa Laguna dates back to the early 1900’s. Located in the prestigious suburb of Laguna Beach, California, Casa Laguna remains one of the cities most beautiful historical sites. Now serving as the Casa Laguna lobby, the property features the original Mission Inn building, while the nearby Mission Suite is thought to be Frank Miller’s interpretation of a guest cottage. In 1931, a second caretaker building was added to the property, now home to the hotel’s Bungalow Suite. The property’s most exclusive accommodation, the Bungalow Suite features a private entrance and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. The 600 square foot suite includes a separate living room and bedroom, dual rain head steam shower and a fully stocked kitchenette.

In 1945, the inn was sold to a wealthy property developer from Los Angeles who built a number of small buildings on the property before re-naming to Casa Laguna in 1946. After existing as an inn and artists colony the property was purchased by Francois Leclair in 2000 before being completely renovated. After restoring the buildings to their original Mission-style look, Casa Laguna was recognised as a “Registered Historic Structure” by the city of Laguna Beach. The hotel was sold again in 2014, and, after an extensive redesign of the lobby and guest rooms headed by Martyn Lawrence, the hotel was re-opened in April 2016. All 23 rooms highlight Moroccan influences with Moorish tiles and ceramics and feature designer Martyn Lawrence’s custom textiles and ceiling decorations. In addition to the luxurious bungalow suite, the hotel offers a number of rooms variations. The garden room features bright colours, a plush queen bed and Cowshed bathroom amenities. The Junior Suite features sweeping ocean views, a large living room and bespoke furnishings, while the one bedroom suite offers a dining area for two, a wet bar and French tiled bathroom. Casa Laguna also offers a complimentary European-style breakfast daily from 7:00 am and intimate indoor and outdoor spa packages.

Resense Your Senses By Farah Amin

On a crisp December morning I took to the roads for a luxurious pampering session, to the newly opened Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski Hotel in Fifth Settlement, New Cairo, where it took me a 40-minute drive from downtown Cairo. Resense, is a well-known chain of European spas that is new to the Cairo scene. The Spa is located on the ground floor as you enter the hotel. The chain is famous for combining the ancient local healing traditions with the European art of service to create a truly royal and contemporary experience. I was warmly greeted by the private Spa concierge, providing me with lots of welcoming smiles. The spa menu features an array of massages, facials, beauty and rejuvenating experiences to choose from- all the while having a seat on a velvet chaise sipping a refreshing drink of lemon mint water. I finally made up my mind and I was ready to start my lavish experience towards complete rejuvenation. I was led inside to a little corridor that opened up to a bigger hallway all clad with marble. On the left side is the uber lavish locker area stacked with dark brown wooden lockers with digital passwords, lining the walls and a couple of changing rooms. The circular locker area is also furnished with velvet banquets to sit in. I configured a password to my locker and opened it to a lush purple velvet robe waiting for me, Kempinski branded slippers and three towels of different sizes. After I got ready to begin my experience, I was shown the beautiful room opposite the lockers, where its decked out in four pretty vanities to allow guests the option of getting ready after the spa experience all in style. The concierge guided me to the lounge, for a chance to unwind before my massage. As a part of this experience, it was suggested I take fifteen minutes to relax in this comfortable and quiet atmosphere, stocked with reading material of coffee books, local magazines, all stacked onto a wooden quaint library, and a counter with a selection of herbal teas and jars of cookies. I sipped some herbal tea of my choice, which was a jasmine rose green tea, enjoyed a cookie or two while reclining on the grey velvet chaise-lounge and enjoying Rachel Zoe’s latest coffee-table book.

Next was the highlight of the journey: the massage. I chose ‘The Aroma’ massage, an eighty-minute massage, described as the gentlest of massages, yet so effective in balancing the whole body and the mind. It is a synergy of seamless massage techniques and a specially blended essential oil to ensure feeling renewed and refreshed, and renewed and refreshed I was! One of eight treatment rooms, the massage room had a state of the art massage bed all in a dimly lit, cozy and a perfect temperature atmosphere, and most importantly an experienced, gentle and extremely hospitable masseuse. To make the most of my experience, and to try out the seemingly endless spa facilities, I headed back to the facilities zone, a circular area with plenty of offerings from a sauna room, a steam room, a traditional hammam, a Jacuzzi and showers with a very unique crushed ice faucet. It said to be great for the blood circulation when you shock the body from hot to cold, and that is the purpose of the ice. I took a ten-minute sauna session and headed straight to the faucet of ice to take a handful to run it all over my body. It felt amazingly invigorating and was a refreshing end to a perfectly complete distinct body and mind experience. Resense spa is a truly broad and wide-ranging spa experience full of amazing experiences and choices that can be tailored to each individual for a one-ofa-kind wellness journey that leaves you rejuvenated and feel like a whole new person. Its is no surprise, that the Resense spa offers such a high quality experience as it is managed Claudia Dascalu, one of the leading spa and wellness industry experts, with 20 years of expertise under her belt. She has managed some of the top spa and leisure facilities in the Middle East. Claudia can help guide you and improve your lifestyle through well-designed detoxifying nutritional programs, as well as wellness recommended sessions, providing clients with proven results driven spa experiences.

HOT ADDRESS

Proven Hypothesis

The Test Kitchen

By Kate Dannies

When it comes to fine dining, atmosphere is equally as important to the experience as a plate of expertly prepared cuisine. While many restaurants have capitalised on the growing trend of shabby chic, hole in the wall establishments, seriously sophisticated fare deserves a more elevated setting. From dimly lit lounges featuring craft cocktails and sumptuous sofas to bright and airy dining spaces featuring fresh flowers and natural accents, dining room décor can make or break the meal. Featuring deliciously delectable cuisine and two dreamy dining options, The Test Kitchen is one hot address we can’t wait to return to. Opened in Cape Town in 2010, The Test Kitchen is the experiment of renowned chef Luke Dale-Roberts. A perfectionist who loves nothing more than to compete with himself, Chef Dale-Roberts and The Test Kitchen have been the focus of numerous awards including Eat Out’s ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, while The Test Kitchen is ranked 22nd on San Pellegrino’s ‘The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ list. After six years in operation serving busy lunch and dinner services in an open dining room, Dale-Roberts decided to transform the space. Now consisting of two rooms, a Dark room and a Light room, The Test Kitchen is only open for a 21 course tasting dinner with a nightly maximum of 40 guests. Dale-Roberts opted to change the design and reduce the restaurants guest load to give more time for his team to create and experiment. The tasting menu at The Test Kitchen changes regularly based on ingredients in season and consists of small plates. Combinations include smoked pickle fish with picked carrot and dashi crisps, local liquorice cured Wagyu biltong and seared duck breast with orange emulsion and barbeque turnip. For those with a sweet tooth, dessert options include summer berries and homemade sorbet and chamomile ice cream with cardamom and brown butter sponge cake.

For the dining room renovation, Dale-Roberts enlisted the assistance of architect and designer Maurice Paliaga and his wife Sandlene, who designed and handmade all of the furniture, along with curating the soft furnishings, tableware, linen and carpets. The Dark room is a luxuriously cosy space where diners can indulge in cocktails and the first seven courses of the chef’s tasting menu. Featuring low lighting, dark wood and leather furnishings, the Dark room is a perfect introduction to the Test Kitchen experience. After guests have had their fill of cocktails and small plates they can venture to the Light room to complete the remainder of their meal. With exposed brick walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, comfy chairs with patterned textiles and soft globe lighting, the Light room certainly lives up to its name. Casual and airy, the space is distinctly fine dining with its white tablecloths and polished floors.

COMING SOON

Shanghai Planetarium Starry Night By: Kate Dannies

Planetariums are some of the most sophisticated and spectacularly designed buildings in the world, often featuring a large dome-shape upon which scenes of stars, planets and celestial objects are projected. Since the first planetarium was built in 1781, they have grown in popularity, gaining particular notoriety with the great Space Race of the 1950s and 1960s. Featuring breath-taking projections and technological exhibits that would engage even the most apathetic of youngsters, planetariums such as the New York City Hayden Planetarium and the Albert Einstein Planetarium in Washington DC have become a focal point of urban centres large and small. Following this trend, an exciting new project in Shanghai will see the creation of a new planetarium in China’s largest city.

The design team, headed by Ennead Architects, recently broke ground on the Shanghai Planetarium project, a 38,000 sqm project located in the Lingang district of Shanghai. The planetarium being built in conjunction with the 68,000 sq metre Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (SSTM) located in the district of Pudong. Aptly inspired by astronomical principles, the building design is centred on the concept of orbital motion. Each of the building’s principal forma, which includes an oculus, an inverted dome and

a sphere, acts as an astronomical instrument, tracking the sun, moon and stars. Suspended above the main entry, the oculus demonstrates the passage of time by tracking circle of sunlight on the ground across the entry plaza, while the inverted dome, situated atop the central atrium, facilitates an authentic experience of both the day and the night sky. Finally, the sphere acts as the domed screen of the planetarium, while a continuous skylight

around the sphere allows direct sunlight to enter and marks the passage of time in the museum below. The exterior of the building is breath taking, featuring dual oval shapes that meet at one point. Set on a sweeping green zone, the grounds feature exterior exhibits, including a seventy-eight foot high solar telescope, in addition to evening activities at a Youth Observation Camp and Observatory. The space will feature permanent and temporary exhibit galleries, a 68-foot digital sky theatre, a 60-foot op-

tical planetarium, an IMAX theatre, and an Education and Research Centre. The planetarium aims to elevate scientific and technological capacity while enriching and redefining the Lingang area. A stunning display of technology and high design, the Shanghai Planetarium, slated for completion by 2020, will undoubtedly be a focal point of both Lingang and greater Shanghai. With numerous indoor and outdoor exhibits and fascinating features including a solar telescope, we can’t wait to see what the Shanghai Planetarium has in store.

The egg whites are beaten separately and are folded at the end to ensure extra fluffy pancakes. Enjoy served with warm maple syrup, butter, and fresh fruits of your choice. By Kareem Abdelrahman

2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp sugar 2 large eggs, separated 2 1/2 cups buttermilk 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted Warm maple syrup and butter, for serving

Method:

1. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl and mix to combine. 2. In another clean bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. In another bowl, whisk the egg yolks, buttermilk, and the melted butter that has cooled slightly. Fold in egg whites till just combined. Add dry ingredients and fold till no particles of flour are visible. Make sure you don’t over mix it or you risk-developing gluten in the flour, thus making the pancakes tough and not fluffy. 3. Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat and add a touch of oil. Spread the oil with a paper towel until no visible oil remains. Use 1/4 cup of batter per pancake and cook for 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Serve with maple syrup, butter, and fresh fruits.
