EDITOR’S NOTE
Love Matters
W
elcome to our first FLAIR issue of the New Year, where we bring you an issue worthy of your love. What a better time to showcase the latest designs of gorgeous jewellery than in this festive February. Hot off her successful collection launch, we talk in depth with Egypt-based Jude Benhalim. We also showcase Egypt’s most celebrated brand right now “Okhtein” and their high-end jewellery collaboration with Egypt’s prestigious House Select. Meanwhile, our London Editor Daniela Bonetto talks to one of the hottest names in the jewellery world right now, Brazilian jewellery extraordinaire Silvia Furmanovich. Confused about what to get your loved one this Valentine’s? Turn to our pages for the perfect gift in this love-filled season. In the spirit of love that fills the air brought to us by St. Valentine’s Day, it might seem frivolous to celebrate it. However in the increasingly politicized and polarised environment that we are living in now, it is more important than ever to not give in to cynicism. It’s a good time to reflect on what matters; learning to love and be compassionate towards others as well as ourselves. Have a lovely month. Hind El Ramly editor@flair-magazine.com

Sustainability at the Emirates Emirates has introduced new sustainable blankets made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. The soft and warm blankets are made using ecoTHREAD™ patented technology and is now available in economy class on all long-haul Emirates flights. Each Emirates ecoTHREAD™ blanket is made from 28 recycled plastic bottles. With the latest innovation, the bottles are recycled into plastic chips before being turned into yarn, creating a polar fleece material. The fine thread is then woven into soft blankets. The environmentally friendly blankets were designed in partnership with Buzz, the world’s leading inflight product specialists, and are part of Emirates’ continued commitment to product innovation and sustainability. Emirates already runs a green programme on board recycling aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles, and clean paper products such as newspapers, magazines and cardboard cartons where possible. By the end of 2019, Emirates ecoTHREAD™ blankets would have rescued 88 million plastic bottles from landfills– equivalent to the weight of 44 A380 aircraft.

TRANSFORMING BANDIRMA PARK The next in line to get a facelift is Bandirma Park. Located in the most dynamic region of Turkey, a design competition invites competitors to generate ideas for developing a park cultivating the notion of spatial design and planning as well as creating a recreational centre at the regional scale. Bandırma, a candidate to relieve some of Istanbul’s growing population burden, is showing significant advances in becoming an important industry and logistic centre within the region. Once the new port project for the city has been completed and the rail and road links have been connected, it is expected to become Turkey’s portal to Europe. Thus Bandirma Park, located 1 km from Bandirma’s city centre will aim to serve as both a recreational area to enrich daily life and as a space for local design schools. competition.balikesir.bel.tr

B.ZERO 1 – THE RETURN Rome has an attitude; bold, sensual and exuberant and Bulgari’s original B.zero 1 collection expressed this attitude. Fast forward 18 years and Zaha Hadid comes into the picture to reinvent the collection. The new B.zero 1 ring marries Bulgari’s bold, geometric style with her fluid design language. Two flat bands with the classic BVLGARI engraving of the original 1999 ring, which was original inspired by the Colosseum, are connected by undulating lines of gold that intersect to create a delicate three-dimensional filigree around its circumference. This intricate, curvilinear structure conveys the fluidity and dynamism inherent within Hadid’s architecture. Its flowing curves engage the body and capture the eye; a compelling new dimension for Bulgari’s renowned jewellery collection. www.bulgari.com

FLAIR REVIEW
Beat To the
Dom Tak
To quote Yehudi Menuhin: “Music is a therapy. It is a communication far more powerful than words, far more immediate, far more efficient.” At Dom Tak, they believe in this philosophy wholeheartedly and see the results in their students on a daily basis. Sabrine El Hossamy - founder & head instructor at Dom Tak, was part of the corporate world for more than 15 years. The turning point in her life came when she decided to leave all this behind and follow her dream of many years which finally materialized in 2016 as Dom Tak. After finishing her masters in business, Sabrine went to Sinai and started learning how to play Darbuka there - proving that one can learn how to play an instrument at any age if persistent and passionate enough! Being of a multicultural background, Sabrine has a mission to share her knowledge and vision of the Darbuka to people of all ages and backgrounds, as well as a different way of seeing music as a whole. Dom Tak, Cairo Rhythm House is a space for musicians and lovers of music to learn and connect. The story of Dom Tak started from Sabrine’s home studio while bringing up her son who was just a baby at the time. Her first students were just friends, and then friends of friends, and then friends of friends of friends! She then slowly began receiving high demand for her lessons from others outside her circle. This lead to her seeking a space away
from her home to turn into a professional studio/school. Soon enough when her son turned 3, Sabrine looked around for any music programs to enroll him in - but to her disappointment found nothing for that age. After her failed search, she decided to create a program specially tailored to her son’s needs as a child; to first love music and understand what music is through fun & play rather than just theory and serious, strict rules. Thus, the Kido program was born! The Kido program teaches kids to understand music as a whole and get them to love it. This way, when they hit ages 6-8 years old, they would have already been exposed to several instruments through the program. The school’s philosophy is very different from that of any other school. All of the teachers working at Dom Tak are musicians and not just teachers - which contributes to the contemporary approach they have towards teaching music. The focus is on the music & the teaching is done in a less academic method in order to engage the students and really remind them that music is more than just academia. Sabrine’s method of teaching Darbuka is very specific, as she uses the split finger technique which is very peculiar and rare to find. Her students learn to play from the first class, and walk away with a new rhythm learned after each session!
In 2015 Sabrine got certified as a coach, allowing her to not only teach Darbuka, but also use it as a tool to help companies accomplish human connection & synchronicity through music coaching by offering team building activities, corporate drumming workshops and drum circles. The drum is the most accessible instrument for non-musicians. As previously explained, at Dom Tak they have a very therapeutic approach to music and use it to help people as well as teach them. Through the Kido program, they have already witnessed many children changing over time - those who were extremely shy being more social, those who had tantrums and were afraid to attend the class being the most eager to join every week, and even the bonds being built between children where they help one another in and outside the class. The Dom Tak team want it to cater to people from all walks of life including children with disability, autism and so on. The idea is to truly use music as a therapeutic tool rather than entertainment - or what they like to call edutainment (a mixture between education & entertainment.) Research has proven that music is a very effective form of therapy for kids who have day to day challenges - from ADD all the way to autism and other disabilities. Dom Tak’s mission is to use music to change lives, one person at a time.

AnaYela, Marrakesh, Morocco It’s V-day so who doesn’t love some romantic drama? The five room Moroccan riad once set the scene for one of the city’s hidden love stories: a 16-year-old girl and her beau once had clandestine nighttime meetings in the palace’s Tapis Volant, or “flying carpet” tower. “I am Yela” are the opening words of handwritten manuscript that was discovered in a hidden room during re-construction. One of the most renowned calligraphers of Morocco, hammered the lovers’ tale in silver on the vast doors through the house, like pages in a book.

Scribner’s Catskill Lodge, Hunter Mountain, USA “No one puts Baby in the corner!” Ah, those were the days when romance truly existed. Scribner’s Catskill Lodge pays homage to the rich heritage of the region while emerging as a thoroughly modern luxury retreat in a spectacular setting. Don’t forget your dancing shoes… you never know.
The Dwell Hotel - Chattanooga, USA Time travel has always been your thing? Then head to Chattanooga. Yeah I hear you, Chatta-who? But hear me out cause this place has some serious cool vibes. Chattanooga, Tennessee, is known as somewhat of a cultural melting pot. Situated at the midway point between metropolitan Atlanta and charming Nashville, The Dwell Hotel—the city’s first luxury boutique hotel—is the perfect reflection of this sentiment. Housed in a turn-ofthe-century brick and limestone building, the hotel’s interiors offer a funky take on mid-century modern, with each of the 16 guestrooms evoking a journey into another era. Aesthetics defined by vintage furniture, bold colours, exposed brick, and curated art result in a unique Old Hollywood-meets-South Beach vibe. The nightlife at The Dwell Hotel promises to be equally theatrical thanks to the Terra Máe restaurant and Matilda Midnight bar.

PERSON OF FLAIR
Femme Fatale
Natalie Eva Marie
By Hind El Ramly & Nour Ibrahim
If you are a fan of the WWE, then you have heard of Natalie Eva Marie. And if you are not, no worries, you are soon about to. Also going by the nickname of NEM, the WWE wrestler may not be the ultimate fighter, but she is sure one of the more famous faces of it. Starting out only in 2013 the wrestler joined the WWE without a background in wrestling-an unusual feat in itself. In the same year she joined E Channel’s hit show Total Divas, leading her to quickly become a reality star. Sporting her famous fiery red hair, a mere three years later into her career NEM is not only a wrestler and a reality star, but also has a clothing line and hair extensions brand under her name. Recently she has traded her red locks to take on bigger roles, starring in two movies coming out this year. The first film is titled Inconceivable and places her in a role alongside Academy Award winners Nicolas Cage and Faye Dunaway, while the second film is an action packed film titled Action#1 where she plays a bounty hunter. Citing “The Rock” as her inspiration due to his smooth transition from WWE champion to acting, this femme fatale is conquering Hollywood one battle at a time. Enjoying success in and outside the ring, she’s definitely one to watch out for 2017.
How did you get started in the WWE? Was it a dream of yours to be a WWE wrestler?
As I told my mom before, “This is my dream job”. I’ve always been athletic, I played soccer in college, and I watched WWE when it was WWF, with all my brothers. This job was everything I loved fused into one. Not only do you have to be able to handle all the physicality, but also you entertain live audiences, and WWE does so much for the community. I also have worked with Special Olympics and spoke at Be A Star rallies. I was quickly recruited for “Total Divas”. I ended up landing that opportunity, which put me directly on the main roster. It was one of those things that never really happens that way, and I was very grateful for how everything unfolded, especially so quickly.
What match was the most memorable for you in your WWE career?
My NXT title match with Bayley has been my favourite match so far. She is a phenomenal wrestler and we have a really electric dynamic when we step in the ring together.
Were you inspired to venture into acting by the success of Dwayne Johnson and John Cena?
Absolutely I admire John and Dwayne! When I came into the WWE I wanted to emulate Dwayne’s career because he was not only able to captivate the audience in the WWE universe but then the whole world. He was able to make that transition to Hollywood and start doing movies. He turned himself into a major superstar. The fact that I wound up with the same agent, and management company as him is just insane! God is so good, I really don’t know how this all fell into place for me- it’s truly a dream come true.
How did your experience in the WWE prepare you for acting? In WWE you have to always be ready to go. There are cameras in front of your face, it’s live television. That really played a major role in preparing me for acting, getting used to being in front of a camera. The cameras on set didn’t feel that different from the “Total Divas” camera or the massive production that happens for WWE. With WWE you’re always moving, always on the go, and you’re constantly travelling from city to city. On top of that, you are conforming to different audiences so it really makes you think on your feet, and that helps with acting. I feel like the transition was fantastic in the sense of getting you prepared and getting you ready. I think the obvious difference in film is that I’m not wrestling. My second film is an action film which
I am very excited about, Action#1. While filming, I was able to utilize the training that I had with WWE and do all my own stunts. It was pretty insane that I was able to perform and do my own stunts that normally a stunt person would do. Then of course, filming a movie is not live, so you’re doing a million different takes from this angle and that angle. That’s really different from WWE because you’re doing a small portion of each scene as opposed to going live and having one take.
Reality TV seems exhausting with week after week of drama, how do you stay sane amidst it all?
I think it’s because I have such a great support system. My husband, helps me maintain a level head without getting too caught up in everything. Not only is reality TV kind of crazy but, I’m working with eight other women, so things can get a little fierce.
Having a business degree and running several projects yourself, did you always want to be an actress, or did it come with your interest in business? I think all of my interests fused into one. I’m the youngest of a family of all boys, so I was always the center of attention. I love to put on a show, I love to be in front of people, I love to talk, and I’m definitely a social butterfly. I think all of those things I love have placed me exactly where I am supposed to be. My dad instilled in my brothers and I “You get out what you put into something”. In other words, “give it all you got. If you half-ass it don’t expect the outcome to be great.” Running my own business is something I have always aspired to. At a young age, I was inspired by people who ran their own businesses. Everything I’ve done up to this point has helped me get to where I am now; An athlete, entertainer, actress, and business-owner. Everything now is falling into place.
Your upcoming roles in Inconceivable and Action No. 1 vary greatly in terms of seriousness. What was different about each experience? In Inconceivable, my character is just a small town girl, plain Jane, girl next door, not glam at all, barely any makeup, and is very low maintenance. Action#1 was very different because I’m this bounty hunter badass, wearing a tank top, cargo pants, shooting shotguns, and flipping dudes over my shoulder. Inconceivable is my first feature film, and I’m super excited. Photo by Josh Ryan

It’s with Nicholas Cage, Faye Dunaway, Gina Gershon and Nicky Whelan. It’s a thriller that centers around surrogacy and not being able to conceive, and the fear that some women go through when they get older and may not be able to carry a child. My character is a bit of the girl next door. I play Nicolas Cage’s wife’s (Gina Gershon) best friend. It’s pretty cool, and it was really one of those things where I couldn’t believe that it was real and that I was working alongside major Academy Award winners. Two days before wrapping Inconceivable, I booked my second film, Action#1, which is a comedy. I play this tough bounty hunter that Nicolas Cage hires to hunt down the person that stole his Action#1 comic, worth $2.5 million dollars. The cool thing about this film, besides me playing an entirely different character is that it is based on a true story about Nicolas Cage. Sometimes, I still find it hard to wrap my head around that it happened, and that I have officially finished filming two feature films. The two characters are very extreme, and that’s why I’m so in love with acting because you get to mould yourself into these different characters and be somebody completely different. The great thing is that in both of these roles, I was able to pull from my own experiences. I found a little bit of Natalie Eva Marie in each character which was amazing as well. Both experiences were very different and special on their own.
You had to lose your signature red locks for a role. As it is your trademark look, do you feel any different without it?
At first, absolutely, because I moulded into “all red everything”, and it was something I was very used to doing. It wasn’t really a big switch because my natural hair colour is dark, but it was funny because the change even shocked me. It was a tough transition, but I think that is what entertainment is all about; being able to adapt, be a chameleon, and show that you are more than one type of character and you can be versatile which not only is fun but also important.
What style characterizes your fashion label?
I would say hip and modern. I’m a very casual chick, but sometimes I like to get all glammed up too. NEM Fashion is a little bit of everything. Sometimes I like to throw on sweatpants and a hair tie, and then the other side of me is definitely going to rock a heel and a full face of glam. I feel like my clothing represents all of my sides. NEM Fashion is for the everyday woman; it’s not Photo by Josh Ryan
type-specific whatsoever. My childhood best friend had a hard time finding clothing because she was always a little bit bigger than everybody. When I created this line with Janet and Jonathan, it was really important for me to also create clothing for all body types, not just one body type. That’s the whole reason I created this line, which birthed the NEM foundation which is all about self-love and body positivity. I think today, in the age of social media it can sometimes be hard to have a positive body image, which is something I also struggled with. Not only do I love clothes, but I also wanted to shine a light and be able to give back. A portion of NEM Fashion profits go directly to the NEM foundation.
What was the purpose of starting your NEM foundation and what do you hope to achieve with it throughout the years? The NEM Foundation is extremely important to me. I’ve been through a lot in my life and now I want to share my experiences, strength, and hope, with as many men and women that I possibly can. With the NEM foundation, we have been able to coordinate a couple of boot camps, and the boot camps aren’t to necessarily lose weight or conform into a certain body type, it’s more about being healthy physically and mentally. I need to work out not only to stay healthy, but it’s also for my mental health. It’s all about uplifting one another. I think women, especially, feel there is only room for one person at the top, and instead encouraging one another we see women doing the opposite. I hope to spread the message that we as women are more powerful when we work and uplift each other. This all ties into feeling good about yourself. There is nothing more beautiful than a woman who is confident and comfortable in her own skin That is the beauty of beauty, it comes in all forms of age, shape, height, colour, and culture. Confidence radiates from within and then manifests on the outside. It transcends any myopic cookie cutter definitions of physical beauty set by media or culture. Every single woman is beautiful, and the more confident in who they are, their inner beauty will be reflected outwardly to whomever they encounter.
What is your hidden talent?
I can make a bomb pancake! I don’t think anyone can compare their pancakes to mine. It’s funny because my husband Jonathan is the cook in our house, he’s so good and so talented. I feel like I can definitely hang with him in the pancake department. Photo by Eric Gea

Bobbi Brown Steps Down Bobbi Brown, famous for pioneering the now timeless natural makeup trend, has decided to leave her eponymous brand after its 25-year anniversary. Proud of her past achievements Brown feels the urge to start a new chapter in her life and is now delegating her position to global brand president Peter Lichtenthal, who will continue to run the business. Both new leaders in the world of cosmetics seem to have much in store for them, which in turn mean lots in store for us.
Notes di Colonia Opera, the timelessly classic form of artistic sound that seems to never die away. Acqua Di Parma’s Colonia? Same thing. And now they have even more in common, with the classic staple scent being amped in three different ways-scratch thatthree different acts. For their 100th anniversary Acqua di Parma is going back to their Italian roots by releasing three different variations of their timelessly iconic scent. While Act I is more true to the original ballad of the Colonia, Act II slightly abandons its predecessor by still sticking to its true form, yet all the while maintaining an herbal undertone. Act III however surprises us all with a spicy twist filled with airs of both Ginger and Jasmine, as well as keeping a secret dry chocolaty afterthought. The marvellous collection, all inspired by songs from the opera itself, are true to their form and loyal to their own. A truly spectacular way to celebrate a century’s worth of perfection.
Galop d’Hermès Hermes and horses go hand in hand. The brand, famous for their musky scents, leaves no horse behind with this amazing aroma. With a mix of leather, damask rose and quince, the rustic sophistication of the fragrance is one of warm memories and contented thoughts. It is the second scent to be released by Christine Nagel ever since the departure of the previous “nose” Claude Ellena. The new chap seems to know what he’s doing however, given that even the design of the bottle is a nod towards the stirrups in a horse.

PERSON OF FLAIR
Silvia Furmanovich Jewellery Extraordinaire
Daniela Bonetto talks to Brazilian jewellery extraordinaire about heading up to the Amazon, her personal style and (psst, heads-up boys) the perfect gift for your missus this Valentine’s Day. By Daniela Bonetto
Daniela Bonetto: You come from a family heritage of goldsmiths. How has this influenced your choices in life?
Silvia Furmanovich: I got into jewellery design because my father was a goldsmith. He passed away when I was 17. I used to watch him make beautiful things, and I was always so impressed about the power of creativity and making things. Because of him, I knew it was my destiny to go into fine jewellery.
SF: I think women are increasingly buying jewellery for themselves, as opposed to waiting to be gifted by their partners.
DB: Let’s talk about your collections. You have received a lot of acclaim for the art of marquetry. Tell us a
DB: What is the most important thing your father taught you about the business? SF: I remember his artefacts in yellow gold, and he taught me all I needed to know about the importance of craftsmanship, of finishing, details you can’t readily see. Today in jewellery and in fashion, producing copies of the same style is prevalent. Things that are individual and handmade hold more value. I always thought it was important for my collections to have oneof-a-kind pieces.
DB: What is your best childhood memory?
SF: I remember my travels very vividly, and also observing my father as he used to work in his atelier, located in the house I grew up in.
DB: How do you celebrate Valentine’s day?
SF: The old-fashioned style – a dinner and a movie can go a long way!

and they’ve made something I would have never imagined possible to create in the smaller scale of jewellery. It’s a very Brazilian collection. The piece’s lightweight and colourful, the designs are based on tree branches, feathers in a variety of colours, geometric patterns of gems and flowers from the Amazon forest. It’s a very complete collection. Marquetry has long been used as a means of decorating furniture and wooden artefacts, widely used in Europe from the 15th C. onwards in the decorative arts and ornamentation. For this collection, artisans go out in search of wood from parts of tree material – including branches, bark material, etc. – that fall to the ground. Many of them are found within rivers and by being in the water for so long start to acquire different hues. The wood is therefore salvaged and reclaimed, making this a sustainable process. The veneers come from different species of trees. The marquetry technique is realized by skilled craftsmen, who cut and assemble different shapes of veneer or “leaves” into a sheet that is then pressed onto the surface of the piece. The grain, figure and colours of the thin veneers are taken into consideration in order to create the decorative patterns. The pieces are then paired with precious gemstones and diamonds.
DB: How would you like women to see your jewellery and wear it?
little about this collection and what it means to you? What was your starting SF: I like for my pieces to be different from DB: What should a partner be giving point for the Marquetry collection? anything else they have ever seen! their Valentine this year? Where did the inspiration come from DB: Which collection has been the SF: Jewellery, of course! and how did you research it? SF: The collection is a result from a trip I took most fun to work on and why? DB: Which piece in your collections to the North of Brazil, almost to the frontier SF: I enjoyed working with antique netsukes, of Peru, to visit a group of artisans. I met a carved miniature sculptures used in clothing symbolises Valentines the most? in Japan as important symbols of distinction. DB: Briefly how have the trends of gifting jewellery changed over the years?
guide and his story was amazing. He was raised in the forest and he was very skilful in wood marquetry. He went to study to be a priest and the German priests gave him four years in a German university. And he came back to the forest and opened his own business. The local team is very skilled
I collected netsukes along the years, purchased through auction or antique stores. The final pieces - necklaces and cuffs - reflect the idea of highlighting a collectible object that can be appreciated and worn as jewellery. Coming across the book “The

Hare with Amber Eyes” by Edmund de Wall, which recounts the history behind netsukes, was a very significant moment for me! Also during a trip to Japan last year, I found the most incredible artefacts, including pieces in lacquer and tiny hand painted shells coated in gold leaf. I acquired antique combs and turned them into necklaces. This is what makes each piece unique.
DB: Now let’s talk about Silvia’s style. Name two style icons you admire—one living, one dead. SF: Millicent Rogers and Iris Apfel.
Marquetry Collection- 18-karat gold, diamond, amethyst and wood earrings
DB: What’s your jewellery philosophy? How do you like to wear your favourite pieces?
Marquetry Collection- bright red wood marquetry fan earrings-18k gold, diamonds and red muirapiranga wood
SF: I like the mixture of materials. I don’t have a prejudice against using common materials like seashells, resin, wood or even bamboo with gold and diamonds. I want to make something that matches what I’m looking for; it doesn’t have to be conventionally ‘precious’. Mixing precious with common is beautiful. I think women should not be afraid of wearing statement pieces. The pieces should ultimately make women happier and confident.
DB: Do you have a most treasured item in your personal jewellery collection?
SF: One of my first hand-woven bead bracelets with a gold clasp symbolizes the beginning of my life as a jewellery designer. It’s a technique that uses porcelain beads coated in 22k gold woven manually using a very malleable thread. I used to make those by myself with my own hands. The effect is of a fabric or tapestry, and there are so many colour combinations and design possibilities.
DB: What are three wardrobe essentials every woman should own? SF: Jeans, good shoes and fabulous jewellery!
18k gold, diamond, ruby, onyx and porcelain bead bracelet
DB If you could only wear one designer forever who would it be? SF: Everything and anything from Etro!
DB: What’s on your shopping wish list this spring? Any trends you’re eager to try? 18k gold, diamond and citrine earrings
SF: I love what Mary Katrantzou does; I am looking particularly at her dresses for Spring!
DB: Finally, anything else on the horizon that you would like to share?
SF: My next collection will be inspired by miniature painting traditions from India – I am very excited to launch it!
INTERVIEW
Jude Benhalim True Individuality By Sarah Hassan
Jewellery designer Jude Benhalim begun her design journey at a very young age, and what started as an assignment in creativity turned into a career of passion. Meet the jewellery designer characterized with confidence and individuality as she tells tales through her striking structural jewellery. With big dreams for her namesake label, her designs should be kept on your fashion radar.
How did you get into jewellery design?
I started at the age of 17 when I was in high school. It actually started as a school project for part of my IB diploma where I had to submit a project related to creativity. So I went to Khan Al-Khalili (a major souk in the Islamic district of Cairo) to buy beads and so. Then I made a very small collection that I sold for charity. Everyone was very encouraging especially that I was very young and I was selling my pieces. That gave me a push and I found myself very enjoying it. Then my mom (Rana Al Azm) suggested I turn the hobby into a business. She’s actually my business partner and that’s how it started. As time passed, I had to juggle both my work and studies together. It wasn’t easy but luckily I was studying film at AUC (the American University in Cairo) as I really wanted to become a film director, hoping that my jewellery business would remain as a side hobby or a side business. Through all years of college, I was growing my business slowly but then after graduation I looked for a job in the film field and I went to locations with film directors but I didn’t really see myself doing that. Neither my personality nor that way I am fits this industry, especially in Egypt. I didn’t feel comfortable. But I was happy that I gave myself the chance to at least know that this wasn’t for me because when growing it up it was a passion of mine but once I gave it a try, it didn’t seem to fit who I am. The I realized that I’ve been giving so much time and effort to my jewellery business and I’ve been enjoying it very much. I love designing and I grew up in a house inspired by design. My dad is an architect so you can see my work is very inspired by architecture, and geometry. My mom also works in the fashion industry so I grew up in a home where I was always inspired by design.
Why did you go rebrand your company from “J designs” to Jude Benhalim? That was a decision that I made right after I graduated when I decided that this is my path and career and this is what I want to do. I started really focusing on re-branding and doing this whole makeover to the brand, make it a little more high-end, give it a little richer field. Especially because I was starting to hope that I want to grow to different markets and on a global level. That’s why I had to do that so the name would be catchier and more unique because I did my research and found a lot of J designs around the world. I think my name is kind of unique because I’m half Libyan half Syrian so my name is a Libyan name. But it was kind of a risky decision because everyone was already familiar with J Designs but I just went with it and I took the risk and it hasn’t proven to be a bad decision so far on the contrary everyone said it was a great move that it gave it this richer field.
Your latest collection “Urban Rebel” draws inspiration from the urban life, what drew you to this?
My collections in general follow the journey of a woman that I made up, like a female spirit, and each collection is a stop in her journey where she pushes her limit, and where she learns a lot about herself. In every stop she learns more about herself because she has an inner struggle and this inner struggle is being solved and it’s usually something that I can personally relate to and I feel that any girl in our society especially can relate to. As a persona she is a very curious spirit so she wants to find out more about herself. We first introduced her with my first collection ‘SHE’ as this curious dynamic person, and then her next stop was ‘HER COSMOS’ where she was in the Cosmos in the middle of space where she learns to be alone because we live in a society that tells us you cannot be single or sit or eat and go to the movies alone. It was a point in her journey where she learned to embrace her solitude. With the urban collection the theme is the city life and it is basically about the limitations of the urban life and how in the city you tend to be forced into a role that you don’t necessarily see yourself in; whether, it’s a housewife, or a workaholic. Its a fast paced life that sometimes it doesn’t allow you to really get in touch with your individuality. So it’s about breaking your way from that like moving away from the urban life and its limitations basically; that’s the theme behind the collection. Artistically, the collection is inspired by urban structures, anything urban; the cracked cement, concrete buildings, skyscrapers, intersecting streets, bricks, so when you look at the pieces this is basically the inspi-
ration but the way I translated into my designs I tried to be as abstract as possible as to not just recreate a city, but its elements.
What is your favourite piece from your current collection?
My favourite pieces are the cracked concrete piece, which includes a choker, cuff, and earrings. They are my favourite because it perfectly symbolizes this idea of breaking something. You are literally breaking from the reality. And the cracks perfectly explain the story of the collection.
What is the best/most enjoyable thing about being a jewellery designer?
My favourite part is seeing my sketches and the final product I imagined in my head come to life. I think that’s the most rewarding part. Tell us more about your process in creating a collection. My starting point and initial inspiration is always a space that is the stop where she (the imaginative woman) goes next. I do a lot of research and if it’s a state where I can go to like a city. I will travel and explore its textures, construction, and
47
anything related to that space. So I try to study as much as possible. I also research what’s trending in fashion. Then I start to sketch and when I’m done I take it to the workshop so we can start checking out the several samples for each piece until we reach to the perfect one.
How do you know when the piece is done? How do you edit the collection in general?
When it is the closest to what I had in mind, because it never comes out exactly the way I sketched it. There are always limitations from the workshop because some things aren’t easily done so we start to edit the piece but in general I know I reached the perfect sample when it’s the closest I
had in mind.
Who do you envision wearing your work? Do you think about this when you work on designs?
I can’t think of a specific person but I would say the woman that wears my jewellery is different. She’s out of the box and a bit fierce, edgy, bold and courageous. Because my jewellery is a bit chunky and I don’t have a classic “safe” pieces. She also needs to relate to the calligraphy that’s on the jewellery because it’s very empowering. I always try to remind her of her self-confidence and to always know her worth and value. One time I had a customer ask ‘what does this ring say’ so I told her and she replied ‘this is too arro-
gant for me’. So if the calligraphy doesn’t speak to you than you’re not the person that should wear it.
How would you describe the style of your collections? It’s edgy, architectural, very geometric, and abstract. When I’m looking to get inspired I… I explore spaces that are out of my comfort zone.
What do you do in your spare time?
I watch movies because I don’t want to completely let go of my love for movies because I always want to practice. I also workout.
49
What are your plans for the coming future? I want to expand my brand worldwide so it could be a global name and penetrate different markets across the world. I want to compete on an international market.
What are your plans for your upcoming collection?
I’m working now on the summer collection and it should launch sometime in April. It’s a small one but different. It’s going to be colourful and very summery.

What happens when you partner Egyptian luxury bag and accessories brand Okhtein with its modern and fresh touch with one of Egypt’s oldest and most prestigious jewellery houses-Select Jewellery? A fresh line of fine jewellery of course! With their new line inspired by trends from the 1990s, the partnership resulted in a truly unique collection.
“As children brought up in the 90s, we loved accessorizing,” said Aya Abdel Raouf of Okhtein. “We took our childhood accessories: hair accessories and chokers, and translated them into fine jewellery,” Abdel Raouf said. Through the collaboration, the Okhtein designer duo brought back some of the most iconic 90s jewellery, including lambskin chokers and gold bobby-pin earrings. To add to the nostalgic theme, the images featuring the items are Polaroid pictures and the model was styled in typical 90s trends and hairdos, such as the decade’s iconic double bun hairstyle. Other pieces in the collection feature soda bottlecap necklaces and bracelets, which are a throwback to when the young designers used to collect these caps and make jewellery out of them as kids.
53
Mina Abdou Youssef, Select Jewellery owner, said he saw this collaboration as a way to offer the market unconventional designs with a high value, giving it a timeless feel. “You can wear this collection anytime: at night, in the morning. It’s simple yet has a modern twist,” he said. Youssef’s favourite items from the collection are the coca cola bracelet and necklace because through their design Okhtein managed to take something we saw everyday when we were kids and never really realized its beauty, and make it into something very elegant and wearable, he added. Youssef approached the sister designers because of their strong artistic background and their uncommon vision, in addition to their great reputation both in Egypt and abroad.
Launching a jewellery collection shouldn’t come as a surprise now for Okhtein, after having launched a scarves collection and recently a towels collection.“Okhtein started as an accessories brand so we’re not just limited to handbags,” Abdel Raouf said. “We’ve started collaborating with other brands and labels because we’re trying to change this perception (of being limited to handbags).” This collection was a yearlong process and is an extension to Okhtein’s Future Nostalgia collection, in which the designers were paying homage to their childhood by featuring some of the 90s’ most iconic cartoon characters on their bags. The collection also aimed at raising awareness for autism and underprivileged children.

Caribbean Chic Prada St. Barth By Nour Ibrahim
Luxury and the Caribbean go hand in hand. It’s a staple tropical vacation for those who are looking for the a little rest and relaxation. And what goes better with luxury than Prada. Opening their brandnew boutique in St. Barth, the brand has created a tropical concoction out of the most sophisticated of design in the architecture of their new boutique. Extravagant yet tasteful, the new boutique enraptures any visitor with a sense of warm welcome. Inspired by its exotic surroundings, the boutique is filled with multiple designs and patterns that can only be described
as endearing. Carrying both men and women’s ready to wear clothing, shoes and accessories, the boutique is one to explore around and enjoy, all the while treating yourself to the exquisiteness of the 220-square meter room. Giving off the feel of a relaxed vacation home, the boutique is designed with black and white tiled floors that mange to heavily contrast yet compliment the blue leaf fabric printed walls and warm rustic wooden shadings that provide a nice contrast with the white and yellow striped
painted ceiling. Furnished with rare pieces supplied by iconic Italian architects Gio Ponti and Franco Albini, the room has a surreal vibe. While originally inspired by a 1950s South American mansion, the store is given a modern twist with original vintage-fabric wall coverings, inspired after iconic prints of the Prada collection itself. The result? Tropical sophistication. The exotic interpretation of the brand is a truly refreshing twist from the usual collective nature that most Prada boutiques tend to supply. This more relaxing and tropical sense of decor is one that a visitor will find hard to ignore. A beauty in sight and a luxury in content, a true win in the interior design field of fashion for the sophisticated Italian brand.

In recent years, the city of San Francisco has emerged as a rising star in terms of culinary innovation and elegantly executed cuisine. While the city boasts a large and diverse range of restaurants highlighting ingredients from exotic and far-flung locales such as Sardinia and Guam, fresh and classically prepared seafood remains the mainstay of the San Franciscan culinary scene. Featuring a range of dishes and cocktails that embody the spirit of the San Francisco Bay, Leo’s Oyster Bar is the chic seafood spot that we crave. A fun and funky mix of upscale fare and quirky décor, Leo’s is all about old-meets-new. With an interior undoubtedly inspired by famed 1940’s interior designer Dorothy Draper, Leo’s atmosphere features an eclectic mix of black and white tile, tropical print wallpaper and fine wood accents. Decidedly anti-minimalist, interior highlights include a long pink onyx bar, tropical patio chairs and lush vegetation throughout. Leo’s Oyster Bar is the fourth addition to the Big Night Restaurant Group, which includes Marlowe, Park Tavern and Cavalier. Executive Chef and partner Jennifer Puccio expertly curates the menus for each restaurant, with cuisine ranging from classic pub fare to new American. While all of Puccio’s restaurants are characterised by warm and efficient service, each space possesses a unique and distinctive feel. When it comes to the Leo’s menu, oysters are obviously the highlight. With over a dozen variations, diners can order oyster combinations in addition to platters of caviar, crab, shrimp, lobster and other cold seafood items from a handy checklist. Other cold menu items featured include several variations on caviar and crudo, including Japanese himachi and ahi tuna carpaccio.
Chic Leo’s Oyster Bar By Kate Dannies Despite its name, Leo’s also features a range of expertly cooked dishes featuring decadent ingredients. Small hot plate offerings include three different hot oyster preparations (think devilled egg fried oysters and oyster carbonara) along with crab and lobster cakes, and the restaurant’s famed tater tots alongside a scoop of brandade and tapanade. For those with bigger aspirations, large plate offerings include a New England lobster roll, black cod with rogusa squash and braised short ribs. A list of well-crafted cocktails round out the Leo’s menu, with diner favourites including the Island Girl, a mix of rum, banana and spices, and the cheekily named Office Supplies, featuring scotch, amaro and vermouth. For those looking for a no-holds-barred experience, look no further than Mr. Nicholas Liquid Lunch. Named after partner Anna Weinberger’s husband and business partner, James Nicholas, it consists of a martini with either Ketel One vodka or Bummer & Lazarus gin, accompanied by a bowl filled with an array of pickled vegetables. With a menu featuring dishes that are both classic yet decidedly unexpected, Leo’s Oyster Bar is the perfect updated San Francisco seafood experience.

ARCHITECTURE
Pretty Promenade Chicago Riverwalk By Kate Dannies
Famed for its bold architecture, iconic skyline and vast array of culinary and educational attractions, the city of Chicago is undergoing a renaissance period, spearheaded by the city’s ‘Choose Chicago’ tourism initiative aimed at celebrating and promoting Chicago’s rich cultural and historical landscape. At the heart of this initiative is the development of the Chicago Riverwalk, an open, pedestrian waterfront located on the south bank of the Chicago River that has been in development since 2001. Recently completed, the Chicago Riverwalk is a shining example of a new wave of green urban development projects that offer a little something for locals and tourists alike.
With Phases II and III headed by Ross Barney Architects and design firm Sasaki, the Chicago Riverwalk project has been in the works for more than a decade. Developed in conjunction with the Chicago Department of Transportation, the first phase of the plan called for four separate districts along the river walk, dividing the area into zones featuring park spaces, boat launches, tourist attractions, architectural landmarks and a residential area. The second phase of the project included expanding the walk to include the city’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza, along with the addition of a number of urban parks and green refuges. Since the completion of Phase II, Chicagoans and visitors are able to get closer to the river than ever before, and the area has become a weekend hotspot due to its ample array of bars and restaurants, along with recreational activities such as kayaking, boating and jogging. Still others come simply for the fresh air and relaxation, with weekenders posted up throughout the walk’s green areas, reading, visiting and people watching. Recently completed in 2016, Phase III of the project aims at further expanding the walk, linking a series of six distinctive civic spaces, or ‘rooms’, each named for its unique programme. The Marina Plaza space features restaurants and outdoor seating to provide vibrant views of the river and water activities such as water taxis and sightseeing boats, while The Cove offers kayak rentals and docking for human-powered watercraft. One of the most prominent features is The River Theatre, a sculptural staircase linking the Riverwalk with the Upper Wacker area, while the Water Plaza offers visitors a chance to engage with water at the rivers edge. In an effort to incorporate a space that was both interactive and educational, The Jetty consists of a series of piers and floating wetland gardens offering information about the local ecology, flora and fauna. Finally, The Riverbank serves as an accessible walkway and marine edge that sets the scene for future development along the walk. A new and dynamic network of connected paths, the recently completed Chicago Riverwalk allows for diverse and enriching experiences along the Chicago River. With activities ranging from dining to culture, recreation to education, the Chicago Riverwalk as all that is exciting about new urban development.

Icons of Modern Art The Shchukin Collection By Nour Ibrahim
Modern art: an abstract expression of an individual’s interpretation of a certain instance. And while some people have the artistic gift of creating these arts, some have the rare artistic eye that pairs these masterpieces as one would pair wine with cheese. Sergei Shchukin had one of these eyes, and the collection he built up and brought into the light is not one to be taken lightly. The beauty of the collection surpasses most imaginations, and the possibilities of interpretations are endless. The famous Russian collector managed to accumulate an abyss of French Modern Art that one cannot help but just delve into at the sight. Ever since the collection’s gradual separation in 1948, the collection has not been seen as a single entity since. That’s why Fondation Louis Vuitton took upon them the difficult task of gathering the entire collection back into what seems a well-awaited family reunion. The 130 masterpieces were reobtained with the help of the Hermitage Museum and the Pushkin Museum, who both contributed to the gathering of these Modern masterpieces. The Red Room (Harmony in Red), by Henri Matisse, 1908
The 130 paintings range from a variety of artistic Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and Modern masters. The result? The paintings compliment each other’s artistic accommodation like one would complement a friend. Another spectacular provision of the show is a multi-screen video installation titled “Shchukin, Matisse. La Dance et la Musique”. The video, directed by Saskia Boddeke and produced by Peter Greenaway, is a beautiful reenaction of the conditions in which Shchukin custom-built a Matisse to create a monumental artwork for the Trubetskoy Palace’s staircase. None of this, however, would have been possible in the first place without some vital contributors, who marvelously helped in the gathering of this exhibition. Curator Anne Baldassari, who also helped edit the catalog for the exhibit. Directors of the contributing museums, Marina D. Loshak, Pierrot And Harlequin (Mardi Gras), by Paul Cezanne,1888
director of Pushkin Museum and Mikhail B. Piotrovky, director of Hermitage Museum, as well as the director of the Tretyakov State Gallery, Zelfira Tregulova. Also contributing to the collection is the grandson of the famous collector himself, Adre-Marc Delocque Fourcaud, an expert in the work of his ancestors and the acting historical advisor on the project. Art is one of beauty and interpretation, and the collection shows this in its flexibilities in the wonders of the mind. The exhibition is a definite must see for any art enthusiast that wants to challenge their artistic intellectuality to the fullest. MERCEDES C200 On the Radar By Sarah Hassan
The German deluxe vehicle isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. The Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class has been successfully taking on a few competitors on the fast lane. That said, we are here to present you with Mercedes C200 performance at the pit stop that will take you right into the thick of the action and ahead of the curve.
The New Beauty Approach The Mercedes-Benz, introduced in 2016, has taken a step forward with its sensuous clarity and purist forms of the C-Class design that has been arousing emotions with its dynamic sportiness. Putting its engine and mechanical structure aside for the moment, the model offers a stunning and creative interior design. With the vehicle’s five speaker sound system and its cloth trimmings, this beauty is extremely captivating that you would love to call it home! Its space for luxury, and its lavishly crafted detailed switches feature a three-dimensional design that styles a high-class interior. But it doesn’t end there, as its leather multifunctional steering wheel is comfortably tempting that there won’t be any need to take your hands off the wheel. However, nothing is completely perfect. The model has been receiving negative feedback towards its roofline of its entry and exit to the back seat, creating ‘aggressive’ door cutlines according to Vehicle History. Its optional features includes that sunroof we all want that gives the natural air conditioning to the car and lets you have a glimpse of the mighty handiwork of the creator. Adding to that, is its 19 inch Alloy Wheels that will give you the performance of suspense. But unfortunately a manual transmission does not exist like in this model like in the BMW 3 Series which offers a stick-shift transmission option. Despite being a powerful car it features new economical engines that guarantee the best system while consuming less petrol that will make your ride way more affordable with its 2.0L, four cylinder, 148HP, and its massive fuel consumption that reaches 6.5L/100km. Meanwhile, it needs to be noted down that the maintenance of the car will be a lot more expensive than normal. That’s why many would rather spend this fortune on a different car as it is way pricier than its few competitors such as the BMW 3 Series or AUDI A4 that have similar features.

FLAIR FOODIE
Strawberry-Swirled
Caramelized White Chocolate Blondies Blondies are basically the cocoa-free version of brownies. They are dense, fudgy, and full of deep white chocolate notes. It is crucial in this recipe to use very good quality white chocolate for it to caramelize properly. A final swirl of homemade strawberry sauce gives them a vein of jam-filled fruit among all the sweet and gooey cake. Enjoy it warm, room temperature, or chilled. Blondies can be stored in an air-tight container for up to 3 days at room temperature. By Kareem Abdelrahman
Ingredients: Blondies: 300 grams high quality white chocolate, chopped 170 grams unsalted butter 3/4 cup white sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla extract 3 eggs 2 and 1/4 cup flour Strawberry Swirl: 250 grams, sliced strawberries 3 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp water 2 and 1/2 tsp cornstarch
Method: 1. Start by caramelizing the white chocolate. Add chocolate to glass baking dish, cook in a 150C preheated oven for 30 minutes till golden brown, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside to cool down. 2. To make the strawberry swirl: puree the strawberries with the sugar in a mixer, add the water that is mixed in with the cornstarch and mix again till smooth. Strain the mixture, and cook over medium heat for 4 minutes till thickened, set aside to cool down. 3. For the Blondie: increase oven temperature to 180C. Beat butter and sugars in a stand mixer till smooth. Add in oil and vanilla and beat. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing after each addition. Add the caramelized white chocolate and beat again. Finally, add your flour and salt and mix just until incorporated. 4. Transfer batter to a 22x30 cm baking pan lined with parchment paper, smooth the top. Add tablespoons of the strawberry sauce all over and with a skewer or a straw mix the sauce into the batter till it forms swirls, do not overdo it, or the batter might turn pink. 5. Bake for 35-40 minutes, let cool and cut into thick bars.
