Based on the rectangular base evolve the washbasin variants, handrinse basin to furniture washbasin, offering a generous storage area and comfortable inner basin depth. Simplicity also rules in the bathroom furniture area. The trick is in the mix between open and closed areas: In this way, everything works airily and transparently. The refined 2/3 division of the wall unit is also continued with the vanity units.

PERSON OF FLAIR
Keeping up with Patile
A Natural Talent Describing herself as kind, determined and resilient, Patile Kalandjian is making a real mark on the family business. Growing up breathing the business meant that she naturally surrendered to her passion and successfully become an integral part of the Kalan brand. Recently launching her Amalfi collection, Patile has ventured into the realm of wonderful colour combinations and adventurous stone arrangements which shows a true evolution of her designs. By Daniela Bonetto
Daniela Bonetto: You come from a family heritage of jewellery design. How has this influenced your choices in life?
Patile Kalandjian: My mom started her own company just after I was born, and she would bring me to the office all the time. I loved seeing my mom design, and the development of the final product. I always loved coming to the studio with my mom, but I also had a lot of different interests. I enjoyed the math and sciences, and wanted to be independent with my career choice. The problem was – that I was also very interested in jewellery, production and the business over all. I would help my family at the office when I wasn’t in class, which caused me to become a very important part of the business. That is when I decided I had to join the business full time. I tried to avoid a true passion of mine … but I didn’t get very far (thank goodness)!
DB: What is the most important thing your family has taught you about the business? PK: My mother and father both taught me a lot about dedication and perseverance. My mom never gave up on her vision and my dad always backed her. They pushed forward even in extremely difficult circumstances. They have created such a fantastic team together and always respect and support one another. They both also taught me that some of the most rewarding lessons are the ones that help you overcome your fears. I have come to learn that I have grown the most from the challenging experiences I have faced and the fears that I have overcome.
DB: Do you have a golden rule that you abide by?
PK: My core values revolve around the golden rule of integrity. My mother started her business almost 30 years ago, and has grown her brand internationally. If she did not have integrity for her business practices, designs and product quality, she wouldn’t be where she is today. As I continue to grow the KALAN By Suzanne Kalan collection, I make sure that my decisions revolve around the same golden rule.
DB: What does being ‘a Kalandjian’ mean to you?
PK: Being part of Suzanne Kalan means working as a family unit. My father runs production with me, and my brother handles graphic design. As a family we have contributed to the brand vision, and we always make decisions together.

DB: What was the turning point DB: What is femininity to you? DB: Tell me a little about your Amalwhen you knew that jewellery was Femininity to me – is the celebration of fi collection. yourself as a woman. how you express yourself. I try to honor these qualities every day.
PK: Gemstone colors and shapes inspire me the most when I am starting to design a new collection. After my trip to the Amalfi Coast in Italy, I wanted to find a way to capture the changing colors of the water and skyline. My mom and I travel all around the world looking for the best gemstones for our collections. I finally came across the right colors, and started designing my new Amalfi collection. I also like to incorporate simple statements in my designs. Many of my designs feature colorful transparent stones that highlight the intricate prong designs.
ring in the shape of a flower my parents gifted me for my 22nd birthday. It is made of pink and purple sapphires and white diamonds all set in 18K rose gold.
DB: What piece of jewellery is your DB: What influences you the most all-time favourite? PK: This is such a tough one! If I had to and how? choose one, it would be a one of a kind
DB: How has your design evolved/ how is it evolving?
PK: The first collection I launched under the 14-karat line was the Starburst collection. I was so nervous to debut my designs, but my mom really guided me throughout the entire process. Color is an important theme in my line, and I started to get more adventurous with the stones I would include. My Amalfi collection really shows a true evolution of my designs and color mixing. It’s my favorite line thus far!
DB: How would you describe your style?
PK: Edgy and classic, yet simple at the same time. I incorporate a mix of dark and light tones in my wardrobe.
DB: “Fine jewellery is a subtle way of telling the world who a woman is without her having to say much”. What does this mean to you and do you have a signature style? PK: Jewellery sets a nice tone and introduction to the type of person you are. I always prefer to keep my clothing style more modest and spice my look up with a lot of jewelry. At Suzanne Kalan we definitely have a signature style – we love stacking, mixing and layering jewellery pieces. More is more!
cused on offering women a wide range of color options to complement their wardrobe. The Amalfi collection continues to feature layering and everyday jewellery styles, but also incorporates new colors that were inspired by my trip to Italy. I have added a new selection of cuts and gemstones to the line, including rainbow moonstone and morganite topaz. The vibrant gemstones are paired with intricate filigree and prong designs that are reminiscent of the scenic sunrise and sunset views of the Mediterranean coastline.
DB: What is your favourite piece from the collection and why?
PK: My favorite piece is the colored stacking band. It is inspired by my mother’s Fireworks Collection with a younger and colorful twist. When I first designed the bands, I had planned on making a variety of colors but only as one-of -a kind pieces. Once I saw the final product and it became such a hit, I decided to make it a piece we can (and have had to) produce over and over.
DB: How would you like women to see your jewellery and wear it? PK: I want women to feel beautiful when they wear my jewellery. I don’t design or add anything to my collection that I wouldn’t wear myself, which is extremely important to me. suzannekalan.com
INTERVIEW
Arabesque
by Reem Jano
Although she has only established her namesake label in 2015, Reem Jano has quickly become known for her jewelry that is characterized by striking geometrical shapes. Her latest collection, Arabesque, is no different, with its patterned shapes inspired by Arabic art and decorative designs. It was Jano’s architectural background that inspired and molded her unique outlook when it comes to her handcrafted jewelry pieces. We spoke to Jano about her new collection, aspirations for her brand and more‌
What is the most enjoyable aspect of being a jewelry designer? It gives me patience. I love how I can see immediate results with jewelry making. People feel positive and happy wearing the piece and this brings me internal happiness and satisfaction.
What are the biggest challenges that are facing you in your business?
My biggest challenges are with finalizing the product with the quality, weight and measurements.
How do you want women to wear & style your pieces?
In my latest collection, Arabesque, which is inspired by geometrical shapes of Arabic art, I urge women to wear what they are comfortable in because the pieces speak for themselves, combining spirals, geometrical shapes and decorative art designs. The rings are bold, asymmetrical and hand crafted. Some cuffs are formed to compliment through their delicate edges and others are dramatic with colors of embellished precious stones.
What is your future plans for your brand and collections?
My plans are to be globally recognized for my pieces authenticity and originality and add newness and wonder to the world of fashion jewelry. Photographed by: Aisha Al Shabrawy Images Courtesy of FLARE PR
What differentiates your brand and makes it unique?
My pieces are uniquely designed for the one of a kind woman who has no boundaries and strives to her optimum with each challenge. My pieces is known to transform raw materials into memorable and one of a kind creations. My artistic pieces are captivating as they combine sterling silver, precious stones and gold plated brass giving them a luxurious feel.
How would you describe your design aesthetic?
My jewelry is described as stated in the brand’s slogan to be the “fashionable, bold and wearable.” Each Reem Jano piece is handcrafted with different techniques, finishes and carefully selected stones.
Where do you draw your inspiration?
The best inspiration comes from almost anything! When I’m inspired, I try to link this inspiration to a concept by putting my ideas to research. From paper modeling, to finalizing the proportions to completing the master piece. It can be drawn on anything, a tissue, note book or even my sketchbook. Usually if I don’t have any of these items, I take a picture a picture of it for research later.
How did your architectural background influence your jewelry making?
In jewelry making, you have to balance the piece with its weight and conformity. My architectural background helped me know how to set the pieces on the body without it being irritating. Even though my pieces are considered bold or gigantic, I make sure it isn’t heavy.

Egyptian Kicks Elia by Amira Motawea By Kate Dannies
Egypt’s fashion industry is going from strength to strength in recent years with emergence of tantalizing labels that regularly tempt us to part with our salary for the sake of style. From clothing and jewellery to sunglasses and now shoes, home-grown Egyptian labels are where it’s at right now. Since we are in the mood for a remake of our shoe wardrobe this season we are thrilled that there is a company making chic shoes right here in Egypt in all the styles we desire. Forget the generic options at the mall and meet Elia by Amira Motawea—you will not regret it.
Elia by Amira Motawea is a fashion forward Egyptian shoe label that is turning heads at home and abroad. Founder Amira Motawea has had a passion for shoes for years that she finally shared with the world when she launched Elia in 2015. We are happy she did! Elia features handcrafted footwear made with clean lines and quality materials. Elia’s offerings come in a range of styles from sandals to booties and loafers that are perfect for fall. As if we weren’t already in love with Elia, there’s more: almost all of the designs are crafted by local artisans in Egypt and using mostly Egyptian materials. This was an intentional choice by Motawea, who is committed to using her brand to help the local fashion industry and economy flourish. She is certainly not alone in this project but stands out as one of the up and coming home-grown shoe labels in Egypt today. Motawea always had a passion for customizing her shoes and decided it was time to turn her passion into her career. She began by visiting small shoe workshops in different parts of the country and doing an apprenticeship to learn more about how shoes are constructed. After her apprenticeship, Motawea began putting together her own designs, learning more about fashion sketching, and looking for a local factory with the capacity to produce her line to the level of quality she was looking for. Elia’s very first design was the “Pharaonic Sandal” a perfect tribute to Elia’s Egyptian roots with a broad appeal on the international fashion scene. Motawea did this purposely; the original Egyptian shoes were leather sandals so she decided this was a perfect starting point to launch Elia. The result was a chic and quality update on an original Egyptian innovation: genuine leather sandals combining quality with chic lines. Messi for NEMEZIZ Leo Messi is wearing the newest, safest, and most agile shoes of the season and that is the Ocean Storm NEMEZIZ 17 by Adidas. Inspired from the idea of taping, these shoes are meant to feel like they are part of your own foot, for the most powerful kicks and the most agile steels. Reserved for Kate Reserved is unleashing a new fall/winter collection and reserved a collaboration with the ever-young Kate Moss. From the beginning, the creative direction was to be ‘all on Kate’s terms’, giving her control of the looks created. The simple question to Kate: If you entered a RESERVED store, what would you pick to wear? Show us your style. And the result? Equal parts rebellious, casual and sexy, as comfortable in a black leather jacket as a faux-fur coat thrown over lace underwear. The campaign, shot in London by renowned photographer Daniel Jackson, aims to bring RESERVED’s identity to life in a way that will appeal to consumers by combining Kate’s iconic London look.
Tiffany & Co. for the Elephants Partnering up with model Doutzen Kroes, iconic jeweler Tiffany & Co. is releasing a beautiful line of elephant necklaces to help save the dear animals from extinction. For the first time in the brands history, it is selling pieces solely for the cause, as 100% of the proceedings go into saving the environment of and protecting the elephant from illegal poachers. Proving that a social responsibility is just as important as a responsibility to a business, this collaboration proves that world still hasn’t yet gone cold.
Meli Melo x Palermo The famed Severine bag is coming back this fall with a brand new collaboration. Creative Director of Meli Melo, Melissa Del Bono, has combined forces with Olivia Palermo to find the perfect fall shades for the iconic Severine bag. Known for its delicate and petite nature, finding a way to make the almost bracelet like purse seem as comforting as the vibe the fall season brings with it was most definitely a difficult task. Yet the fashion duo managed and produced the ideas of white and burgundy, since they both went well with any autumn attire. A perfect win for this collaboration.
Gregg & Mason Plus Size Line Fashion is for everyone, and the famous plus size bloggers Gabby Gregg and Nicolette Mason know this. Rarely has there been a line of clothing made specifically for women who are considered plus size, even though the world is totally fine with making clothes that only look good on smaller girls. The blogging duo has joined forces to create a plus-size only line. From sizes 16 and up, these fashion bloggers have an edge against every designer in the market, and they are using it. That edge? They know how it is to be a plus-size fashionista.
H&M’s Arket Launch Advertising for a launch can make or break opening day, and H&M made it. With the launch of their latest Arket brand, they have focused on casual yet sporty inspired casual wear. The outfits were advertised in a bright citylike setting, meant to establish the simple yet cool aesthetic of the line. Bounded by block colors and statement items, the opening of the flagship store in London is probably the best place to start, as the whole campaign gave off the city’s personality. A refreshing new start for H&M this fall season as we see fresh designs from the established fast fashion giant.

Olympia Le-Tan x Lancôme Lancôme’s classic style is challenged this Fall as it takes a quirky new turn. Collabing with French fashion designer Olympia Le-Tan, the brand is now flaunting 3D illustrations rather than a timeless bravado. To be sold exclusively at Bloomingdales, this limited-edition line includes two classic L’Absolu Rouge lipsticks, two brand-new Artliners, three Matte Shakers, and four nail polishes all adorning the handbag guru’s famous design and signature. But nothing matches the makeup pallet that comes with a cotton-embroidered illustration that resembles one of Le-Tan’s iconic handbags. Quality makeup and design- it doesn’t get better than that.
Guerlain’s KISSKISS Matte lipstick is usually a beautiful trade up. You get to look fabulous, but the repercussions of the look such as dry, chapped or cracked lips, are always a pain. With the winter season upon u, both the effects of chapped lips from colder weather and matte lipstick are bound to ruin our kylie-like lip dreams. That’s why Guerlain’s KISSKISS Matte lipstick is the cure you need. Both hydrating and plumping, this lipstick leaves you with a comfortable velvet touch to your lips, while still maintaining a vibrant matte finish. The line also includes a liquid version of the lipstick and cream based pallet as well; all meant to hydrate and maintain your deserving lips the entire season long.
Chloe for Coach Young actress Chloe Grace Moretz is the current it girl in Hollywood and the face of American brand Coach, and she displays all their classically cool items. So, it’s no surprise that the scent meant to represent “spontaneous energy” and the “cool of New York City” was going to be faced by the cool, spontaneous actress herself. Described by Moretz to have a modern yet happy scent, these perfumes are bound to be a millennial staple. Images of the bottle are yet to be released, but the collection is said to come out this September.
Dior Metallics For the new fall collection, Dior decided to go all-metallic with their newly released Metallic Collection. Consisting of two eyeshadow quads, six long wear cream eyeshadows, six brand new lipsticks, two contouring sticks, three brow mascaras and three Dior Vernis, this line is filled with everything you need for a dramatic look in the cool season. Siran Jewelry Photography: Nouran khalifa Art Direction & Styling: Nourhan hossam Model: Huda El Mufti MUA: Reham khalifa Hair: Kriss All Jewelry from Siran They say that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. So why wouldn’t you want to hang out with your friend all day and night? That’s exactly the thought that crossed the minds of the recently established Siran Jewelry. Their day-to-night diamond jewelry designs can be worn alone or styled and stacked to provide a unique look. Siran’s latest fashion shoot photographed by Nouran Khalifa truly embodies their style ethos suiting multiple looks as modeled by the gorgeous Huda El Mufti. Khalifa explains that for the shoot she chose a variety of looks because “photographers usually choose luxurious looks for jewelry shoots and limit them to night and evening wear, but I wanted to do something different that fits the youth and show that the Siran collection can be worn in the morning as much as night and can also be worn to both the beach and business meeting as it can be styled in many different ways”. Drawing inspiration from nature, colours, and her frequent travels, Khalifa was excited to work on the shoot which was surrounded by fun vibes due to the various looks it has. Although it could be very challenging to always bring new ideas and development with your work, the freelancing Khalifa loves a good challenge and always aspires to move forward and to take bigger steps for the future, citing that maintaining success is a challenge in itself!

Tech Chic Fashion & Beauty Innovation When fashion, beauty and technology come together beautiful things happen. We love the idea of using the latest technology and innovation to push the limits of what is possible in this market. From a redesigned hairdryer to smart clothing and the most stylish fitness trackers out there, here is our list of the most exciting trends at the intersection of high tech and high style. By Kate Dannies
Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer The Dyson Supersonic is quieter, sleeker, and redesigned with a totally different look from a traditional hairdryer. One of the most innovative aspects of the Supersonic is the motor—a patented digital motor V9 for the tech types out there. It is Dyson’s smallest, lightest, and most advanced digital motor, which makes holding the hairdryer more manageable for easier styling. Another key feature of the Supersonic is how quiet it is. It is not silent, but it is much quieter than a traditional dryer. We’re glad to know that Dyson’s team of engineers is putting their smarts into re-working the hairdryer—one of our staple beauty tools—for the 21st century.
Color IQ At Sephora, employees are equipped with a handheld device that, when held to the face, scans the surface, capturing a person’s exact skin tone and matching it with a combination of numbers and letters from an existing “shade library.” The resulting four-digit code is a Sephora customer’s Color IQ. The program was created in 2012 in collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute to help shoppers find the foundation and concealer that’s the best scientific match for their complexions. Since its launch, Sephora stores have generated 14 million Color IQ matches and the company has also created a spinoff, the Lip IQ, for lipstick shades. Once a customer has her Color IQ she can use it in stores, online and on mobile to sort product displays and minimize the selection put in front of her. Once the code is added to a customer’s Beauty Insider account, Sephora’s loyalty program, it can automatically be applied to mobile and online product searches for the skin and lip categories. Sign us up!
Ringly Fitness Trackers It is now possible to wear a fitness tracker without sacrificing style. Ringly’s luxury fitness trackers are concealed in gorgeous and stylish rings or bracelets such that no one will be the wiser. Ringly’s jewellery has garnered a lot of attention for its bold look paired with its ability to send notification alerts to the wearer. While the technology is relatively simple, it is the perfect option for those looking to keep track of their steps without sacrificing style. Unlike a lot of other devices out there, Ringly can sync with over 100 apps on iOS and Android. As long as it’s installed on your smartphone, you’ll be able to get a Ringly notification for it – which you can customise. On average, Ringly will also work about 20-30 feet from your phone. So if you leave your phone charging somewhere and walk around your house, the ring should still buzz alerts at you. Style and fitness? We’re sold.
ModiFace Today ModiFace is the most widely used augmented reality platform for the beauty industry. In a store, customers use a tablet or a desktop computer to see what they would look like after virtually applying any number of cosmetics. Colors are superimposed realistically on the person’s face. After viewing their image on the screen, people can change what they see—the shade of their lipstick, for example. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons also use the platform to show patients what they would look like after a face-lift or other treatment. L’Oréal, Sephora, Urban Decay, Yves Rocher, and more than 40 other brands use ModiFace to help customers try on cosmetics virtually. A customer looks at the screen. A video camera focuses on the face. The person clicks a button for, say, lipstick and then can make different shades appear seamlessly. It’s also possible to move one’s face from side to side to note how the makeup looks from various angles. We think this is amazing—why waste money on makeup that doesn’t work when you can use software to choose the perfect match?

When it comes to the Middle East, the UAE-based e-commerce company The Luxury Closet has become the most popular online platform in the region. In last May alone, they have received over $1.5 million USD worth of pre-owned luxury goods, making it the region’s leading online boutique players of the region for buying and selling luxury goods. Their aim is to “create the ultimate bridge between brands we believe in and a place where they can be shared, enjoyed and loved”. The market for bargains is booming, fueled by the economy, ethical buying and ease of purchase online. New research reveals a ten-percentage point rise in the number of pre-loved items sold online as consumers increasingly seek to unlock the value of unwanted high-end gifts and items they no longer use. Meanwhile around one in five online shoppers said they bought an item in the first quarter of 2016 compared to one in ten in 2015. When asked to nominate one main reason, saving money is mentioned most, particularly by the 18 to 24 age group. Older respondents are more likely to say that buying pre-owned enables them to buy something for themselves while supporting a charity –more than half (54 per cent) of those aged 55 to 64 compared with 23 per cent of 18- to 24year olds. Women are more likely to cite the love of a bargain, supporting charity and greener motivations for buying. Here are some of the most coveted items on The Luxury Closet…

Milestones
Classic Watches Celebrate Big Birthdays Two iconic watches are celebrating important milestones this year and are having celebrations to match. The Cartier tank watch celebrates 100 with the launch of new special editions of the famous design and the Omega Speedmaster turns 60, celebrating with an updated design that is truer to the original model than any previous special edition. Needless to say we, along with the celebrity fans of these two classic watches, could not be more excited to celebrate these birthdays. By Kate Dannies
The Cartier Tank Watch A Century of Classic Elegance Cartier’s classic model has been a symbol of elegance, luxury and quality since its invention 100 years ago. The tank watch was invented by Louis Cartier in 1917. Louis was a grandson of Cartier’s founder, Louis-François Cartier. Louis Cartier gave one of the first models to General John Pershing in 1918 as a token of thanks. Pershing was the commander of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War I. During the next year, 1919, only six Tank watches were produced. Annual production increased slowly. Thirty-three were made in 1920. Over the next 50 years, 5,829 Tanks were produced. Fewer than 100 new watches were made every year until the 1960s. Louis Cartier’s inspiration for the design of the now-iconic Tank collection was a military tank, a symbol of safety and power, and also the cubist art movement. The vertical bars on the watch represent the treads and the case itself evokes the vehicle’s cockpit. The rectangle inside the numbers on the face is known as the “railroad”. The design is meant to evoke train tracks. Cartier Tank watches come in varying sizes from small to large and are not identified as men’s or women’s watches, as many other luxury brands do. It has always been a unisex watch. According to Cartier, “Its shape, as if governed by a golden ratio, is not quite square, not quite rectangular. By turns masculine and fem-
inine, the Tank asserts that freedom and elegance have no gender.”
Capote, Greta Garbo, Fred Astaire, Duke Ellington, and Warren Beatty.
Many cultural icons from Jackie Kennedy to Andy Warhol and Michelle Obama are devotees of the tank watch. Jackie Kennedy wore her Tank frequently throughout the 70s, and the gold timepiece with a black band sold last June as part of Christie’s Rare Watches and American Icons auction. An anonymous bidder, later confirmed to be Kim Kardashian, paid $379,000, well above the estimate of $60,000-$120,000. Tank watches have adorned other famous wrists, including Catherine Deneuve, Gary Cooper, Rudolph Valentino, Clark Gable, Truman
A new model joined the lineup on September 1, 2017. Cartier just introduced two limited-edition collections of the Tank Cintrée Skeleton watch, originally introduced in 1921, to celebrate the Tank’s 100th anniversary. It joins the Tank Française, which was first produced in 1996, the Tank Américaine, first designed in 1987, the original Tank Louis Cartier design. The anniversary celebration also included the release of six new versions of the Tank Louis Cartier, including two sizes with or without diamonds available in pink and white gold.
The Omega Speedmaster 60 Years of Style and Craftsmanship way as the original, up to the accent on the French word tachymètre. The same focus on the dial yields the same results, even down to a little faux tropicalization to make the piece look older. The applied Omega logo has been brought back, and it even seems that Omega Speedmaster signature is in the original font. There are some upgrades as well. First, the movement is not the original caliber 321 but the modern evolution, the chronograph caliber 1861. The bracelet offers the same look and construction but sturdier and thicker. The original radium lume has been replaced with SuperLuminova that replicates the color. Finally, the “Swiss Made” is now above the seconds, track while it used to be below. In addition to the Speedmaster, both the Seamaster and the Railmaster were released in 1957, and they’ve received similar treatments this year. It will also be possible to purchase a set with the three watches together, again in a limited edition of 557, and Omega announced that those will bear dedicated engravings on the caseback and an extra script on the dial. The set will also include a watch roll, additional straps, and a strap changing tool. This Speedmaster is much more than another limited edition from Omega. The brand wanted to make something special for the 60th Anniversary of its iconic chronograph, and indeed it has. The proportions and design match those of the first model launched in 1957, the reference CK2915-1, exactly. This commemorative Speedmaster will very likely be one of the most sought-after timepieces of 2017.
about inspiration or modernization. This commemorative edition definitely took another route, aiming for a perfect matching look. It starts with the case, which is the same hefty 38mm case with straight lugs as the original, not the 42mm with lyre lugs that eventually appeared. Similarly, the tachymeter bezel is etched in the very same
The Speedmaster, with its bold detailing and technical look has always been a men’s watch, with global icons such as Russell Crowe, George Clooney, Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks and Bill Clinton as fans. Buzz Aldrin also wore it on the first moon landing in 1969.
From its invention in 1957, the Speedmaster exhibited some groundbreaking features, starting with the visible tachymeter bezel. It was designed to be the best tool you could wear on a track (it later went to the moon!) This outstanding design is recognized and coveted around the world, which explains why the very rare remaining Omega Speedmaster reference 2915 currently trade hands for considerable amounts and very often inspire fierce battles at auctions. For the 60th Anniversary of the Speedmaster, Omega is offering perfect reedition of the original. It is the very first time that so much attention has been paid to replicate the smallest details – usually it is more

Countryside Elegance Rublevka Residence
Designed by Oleg Klodt Architecture & Design Photography by Andrea Martiradonna
Commissioned by a design connoisseur passionate about Soviet-era Constructivism and early 20th Century art, Oleg Klodt Architecture & Design has reconstructed an existing building in Rublevka, a countryside enclave on the outskirts of Moscow, and transformed it into a family residence shaped by Late-Constructivist style.
69
Conceived with a modern, functional approach and brimming with historic objects and artwork, the interior reflects the aesthetics of the movements during the 1930s and ‘40s. Thousands of items were sourced by the design team from around the globe, including vintage memorabilia and carefully selected antiques.
To ensure that all rooms receive an abundance of natural light, large windowpanes are fitted throughout the structure, while the dining room comes to life with a painted ceiling mural. In the large gallery at the centre of the residence, and round skylight is fitted and it is a truly spectacular feature.
71
An extensive degree of spatial reconfiguration was required as the building’s existing layout did not meet the client’s functional needs. Where the study is now located, once stood a garage, and current living room is where the swimming pool once was. The pool is now positioned in the fully glazed garden conservatory, immersing the family in nature.
The kitchen features beautifully grained timber cabinetry and original black walnut chairs by George Nakashima. A graceful spiral staircase links the social ground floor spaces with the two private upper floors. The first floor is reserved for the children, with the highlight being the Hans Wegner writing desk, made of rosewood book matched grain, in the daughter’s room.
73
The charming distinction of this residence’s interior is the clever expression of nostalgic elegance through contemporary furnishings and materials. In the living room, for example, the modern-day Emmanuel Babled coffee table carved from solid marble, as well as the vintage style Bassam Fellows armchair and ottoman fabricated in recent times, perfectly complement photographs of architectural monuments like Hagia Sophia basilica in Istanbul and Chateau de Versailles. Every detail has been meticulously chosen, even through to the electricity sockets. This collection of both treasured originals and future classics, links the past with the present, and was carefully curated for the modern family.
On the second floor is the master suite with its own dressing room and a small tower leading to a mini-gym and home cinema.Oleg Klodt’s choice of colour palette is simple yet fine, and the use of high quality material was critical to achieving the desired effect. Many areas are fitted with oak parquet flooring, while the bathroom has teak timber finishes and a Jurassic marble mosaic to create a substantial and luxurious feel.

ART
Dream Weaver Menna Hossam
A photographer turned conceptual artist; Menna Hossam has carved her own niche with her seductively powerful images. Inspired by Greek mythology, fairytales, myths and everything in between, we speak to the artist about her artistic journey.
When did you realize you wanted to become a photographer? At the very beginning I was into taking portraits of my friends, as there is something interesting about capturing people’s faces. After a couple of years I decided to take things to the next level, so I started combining my passion for taking portraits and watching/reading fantasy stories altogether to form multiple series of images…
What inspires you?
Disney movies, theatrical music and Greek mythology.
gle for me to find new and exceptional locations for each project that I shoot. And of course don’t get me started with safety if you’re shooting outdoors!
Share with us a memorable shoot…
A couple of months ago I was shooting a project that had two twin sisters who wore similar white dresses and the shoot was taking place in El Montazah in Alexandria. We were getting all sorts of comments from people such as “are they ghosts?” “Are they dead?” “Omg redheads!!” We heard all sorts of jokes but we still managed to create a wonderful output! It was certainly one of the most stressful shoots in my life.
What is the best/worst thing about being a photographer? What do you consider your greatest The best thing is that it changes the way achievement? you see things. You notice light, shapes, colors, textures, people, buildings…everything around you looks different when you start to see the world as a photographer. It’s a gift that you can create art with every single day. The worst thing about being a photographer, especially in Egypt is that choices are too limited, whether we’re talking about locations or models. The resources limited so it’s always a strug-
A couple of years ago, my artwork was displayed in Times Square in New York City. Unfortunately I couldn’t travel to see it but it was truly one of the most valuable moments in my life. Also a couple of pictures that I shot were featured in a Canadian novel. The author later sent me a copy and I couldn’t be happier!
What challenges do you face as a photographer?
Being a photographer in Egypt certainly a struggle, and being a female makes it even worse. It’s always difficult finding a location that is secluded so that nobody would bother you or your model. I like shooting outdoors and the worst part of the shoot for me is locations scouting. Also the currency inflation made it almost impossible for us to buy any new equipment. Another major challenge is creative blocks. They can be our worst enemy because creativity demands focus, and you can’t just focus when you’re stressed and preoccupied with work most of the time. The pace of life is getting faster by the minute and in my opinion, it’s one of the toughest challenges for an artist to create a barrier between his/her personal problems and their artistic career path.
What do you want to accomplish in the future? I want to travel the world and create stories everywhere I go. I want to give workshops abroad because I find cultural exchange very useful and inspiring.

EXHIBITIONIST
Christian Dior Designer of Dreams By Nour Ibrahim
Fashion is an art, and just like any other exhibition that celebrates the talents of the past, we have fashion galleries as well to admire the years of hard work so many of these style geniuses have been able to bless upon both us and our ancestors. One of the most popular and deserving brands has also just had an exhibition release, and that is Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams. Open at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the exhibition celebrates the 70 golden years of Dior’s fashion feats, and portrays how his overall aesthetic did carry on to today’s modern world of fashion. Beginning with a classic gown from 1947, the “satan red”, the dress that gained the designer his initial popularity as it was both unique and ahead of its time. This caused him to become somewhat of a pioneer in the rebuilding of Paris as the capital of fashion after the war. Beyond the dress
you will find mementos of the designer’s early life, notes, sculptures the works, all inlaid in spot lit Perspex boxes, clearly allowing viewers to admire their delicacy. The exhibition is also designed to connect Dior’s inspirations to his works, by placing sculptures, paintings, and even a garden next to the respective fashionable result. If his originals weren’t enough for you to enjoy, the works of the future creative directors is also displayed, such as the lines of Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and the current, first female, holder of the Dior post, Maria Grazia Chiuri. Half way through the show, you will be allowed to admire the brand’s most prominent works such as the white “bar” jacket, with its padded hips, styled with a full black skirt and a basket-style hat- a design that has both directly and indirectly influ-
enced millions of designs across the globe today. In the final room however, you are truly given a hit of Dior glam, to the point that you can see stars in your eyes- no literally. The “Dior Ballroom” section has a projection of stars go over the brands most iconic gowns such as Elizabeth Taylor’s 1961 Academy Awards dress and gold a Galliano haute couture piece. It is truly a sight for anyone with even slight interest in the world of clothing. An exhibition filled with both artistic, architectural, and fashionable design is a most definite wonder in the world, and is worthy of displaying Dior’s 70 years of perfection. DESIGN NOTES
Islamic Timepieces For years Muslims have relied on many ways to tell them the time for prayers and for breaking the fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Checking the timings on the daily newspaper, turning on the radio or television, installing an Islamic timings application and even observing the sun! But the latest and coolest way to know your timings is with specialized luxury timepieces made for Muslims. Created by Archides Uhren GmbH in Salzburg, the Austrian company has created timepieces specially made for Muslims. The collection features three amazing unique pieces. By Nour Ibrahim
Their first timepiece is the Mekka Tower Clock, which is a replica of the very clock that stands in Mecca today. The mini version is made out of 2kg of sterling silver and has a quartz movement powered by solar technology- something that is abundant in all Arab nations. The gearbox is also handmade to operate 4 dials. A truly marvelous tradition to any home, and to any person who wants something interesting to look at as they count down to Iftar in Ramadan! The next piece, the Hijra Watch is a more portable option for those that rush home after work to feed both the family and themselves when Maghrib hits. When stuck in Egyptian traffic, this watch is sure to calm them with its calming aesthetic and attention to detail. Not only are the numbers in Arabic, but the watch also maintains a moon-phase calendar, counting down the days of the month of Ramadan as well. Keeping track of time and how many Iftar you have to get to this month has never been made simpler.
The final piece by the Austrian company is definitely the most unique. While maintaining the same features provided in the previous piece, this one is a desk clock that has a wide variety of cases, each meant to satisfy every customer’s need. Any traditional Arab salon seems to be missing this Hijra Mantle Clock with its beautiful design and traditional appeal, www.archides.at

Nissan GT-R Egypt’s Latest Supercar
Nissan cars are among the most popular in Egypt. Models like the Sunny, Sentra, and Qashqai can be seen gracing the streets and are known for their reliability and good track record. It is Nissan’s latest model release, however, that has gotten us excited the most-their newly launched Nissan GT-R. The star of the recently concluded Auto fair extravaganza Automech, the sports car is bound to become Egypt’s latest and hottest supercar. The GT-R line up establishes the speed concept, designed by an exterior streamline shape and intersected sports line with a very powerful V shape 3.8 engine which works with a double turbocharged fuel pump including 24 valves.
Exterior Design Rather than being designed to the demands of aerodynamics, the GT-R sculpts the air to its needs – becoming a force of nature as much as a force to be reckoned with. The headlights feature four LED units to create an extremely natural light, replicating daylight, while also offering increased illumination. The super-wide-beam headlights expand the area of illumination toward the sides of the car, enhancing visibility, especially when cornering. The Nissan GT-R Taillights have true iconic status. The taillights are synonymous with the GT-R, if only for the fact that people are used to seeing them as you leave them in the dust.
The Engine Nissan challenged convention at every point of the Nissan GT-R’s development. Instead of a large, heavy engine thirsty for fuel, the Nissan GT-R is powered by an ideally sized, twin-turbocharged 3.8-L V6 that produces a prodigious 565 hp and equally immense 467 lb.-ft of torque. Just as important as the engineering is the actual assembly, which is done by hand by a single master craftsman, whose signature you’ll find on a small, but prominent, plaque.
Safety With the RearView Monitor, when you back up, a camera mounted discreetly on the rear of the vehicle helps you see what’s directly behind you. The system also includes a convenient wide 180° view for an even better look. What is more impressive are the front and rear sonar sensors that are fitted in the Nissan GT-R. The parking sonar gives you an added ally in your pursuit of parking, with sensors on all four corners looking out for static objects and giving you an audible warning when you’re getting close.

INTERVIEW
Cairo Marriott’s Khaled Al Jamal
Managing an Icon Ever wondered what does it take to run an iconic property with over a thousand rooms? We meet the man who is doing just that, as he oversees one of Cairo’s most historic and beloved hotels-the Cairo Marriott Hotel. Khaled Al Jamal, the recently appointed General Manager of the hotel is a veteran in the hospitality industry and the Marriott chain. Joining from The Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi, we spoke to Al Jamal about the challenges facing the hotel industry and the exciting changes he is bringing to the Cairo Marriott.
How did you get your start in the hospitality business?
After finishing school, I wanted to go into finance and accounting. However in Amman at that time there weren’t a lot of opportunities. So I found work as a night auditor at the Marriott Amman. But that didn’t last long because I was helping cashiers at food and beverage outlets and always interacting with customers and helping them! That’s when I found myself drawn to hospitality business. And having a background in finance was an added bonus. By 1990 I went to the United States and continued working in the food and beverage industry. Further on I worked in other chains. Later in 1994 I rejoined the Marriott chain as Director of restaurants in the Budapest Marriott and I have been with the Marriott chain since. My first position as a General Manager came later in 2003.
What in your opinion defines a Marriott property?
Even though I worked in a few other chains the culture of Marriott stayed with me. The foundation in which the company was formed on until today has not changed. Its the strong roots of the company that made it flourish and be what it is today. They always take care of their people so that their people could take care of their guests. Its this culture that stays with us and in our DNA. It’s the reason why most of the Marriott staff remains for a very long number of years. This is very true of the Cairo Marriott Hotel where some of our staff has spent more than 35 years with us. It’s the culture that defines us. I have held posts all over the world, and even though the language changes and you might find yourself a stranger in the country, but in the hotel you feel at home among your teammates.
What brought you to the Cairo Marriott Hotel?
I was asked to take on this role because I have been with the Marriott for so many years, and I have been a General Manager also for about 14 years. So they were looking for a candidate with a strong international operational background who was also Arabic-speaking. This narrowed the choices a bit! I was flattered to be ap-
pointed at this hotel, because it is an iconic hotel- not only in the Middle East but for the Marriott chain in general. It’s a unique hotel because it was among the first few international properties they opened and remained one of the biggest for a while. It opened in1982 but planning for it was taking place since the 1970s. Also this property has the added feature of being a historical palace. And because it opened a long time ago, it has a place in the hearts and memories of many people. It’s a flagship hotel with a lot of spotlight on it. So it’s a big privilege to become a part of this hotel.
What are the biggest challenges in running an iconic hotel such as the Cairo Marriott with over 1,000 rooms?
The challenges facing the hotel are the challenges in the hospitality industry in general. As an industry we are dependent on other industries such as the airlines, the political situation, etc. There are many outside forces that impact our business. Also, our clientele is ever changing. Every customer stays an average of two to three nights. Customer demands change from one year to the next. Our job always challenges us, but you have to rise to these challenges. Its what leads us to innovate and develop. People are more travel-savvy as well as brand-savvy than they used
to be and they hold us to a very high standard.
What are your plans for the future of the hotel in terms of rooms, dining options and other aspects?
When it comes to the two towers, we are in the process of completely renovating all the rooms to be up to our standards. Concerning the palace and our ballrooms, they are assets that we treasure and take very good care of. The palace is our pride and we always make sure it is glamorous. Very soon they will be getting a facelift while of course maintaining their historic charm and flair. We are also enhancing all of our food and beverage outlets. One of this hotel’s many unique selling points is that it has a wide variety of cuisines. The “Egyptian Nights” restaurant in specific has gotten a complete makeover. When it comes to our outdoor area, we have just finished fully renovating the pool area. The biggest change to be witnessed will be in the new gym and spa coming soon. The addition of a spa will be a first for the Cairo Marriott so we are making sure to get it right. It will be a full-fledged spa and will boast 11 treatment rooms. Its location across the garden promenade will ensure a beautiful scenery for those using it.
